- 0:20Hello and welcome back to talking facts.
- 0:22This is your host,
- 0:23Dr jennifer Hunter,
- 0:24assistant director for Family Consumer Sciences extension at the University of Kentucky Today,
- 0:29I'm pleased to be joined by Natalie jones,
- 0:31our physical activity coordinator who's going to share information with us on sparking up a conversation about firework safety,
- 0:40Natalie,
- 0:40Thank you so much for joining us today.
- 0:42Glad to be here.
- 0:43I think that obviously this is a very Timely topic and one that people often are seeking more information about.
- 0:50And so people love to celebrate four July with parades,
- 0:54parties and fireworks often setting off fireworks all summer long.
- 0:58I know that that's one of the complaints that my kiddos have at home is that because it'll keep them up at night,
- 1:03just people continuing to set off their fireworks.
- 1:05But fireworks are a lot of fun,
- 1:07but we also know that they can be dangerous.
- 1:10So let's start just by talking about some of the risks associated with fireworks.
- 1:15Exactly.
- 1:16So first it is extremely important to mention that a lot of neighborhoods do not allow shooting off fireworks.
- 1:24It is against the law.
- 1:26So it's really important that you check with your local ordinances to see if using fireworks are legal in your community.
- 1:34However,
- 1:35that does not stop people as we know.
- 1:37So if you do plan to shoot off fireworks legally,
- 1:40it is so,
- 1:41so important to do it safely.
- 1:43And so if you're going to just share some general tips about firework safety and why is fireworks safety important?
- 1:50I think it is critical that people understand the potential for injury related to fireworks.
- 1:55It's not just something fun and exciting to see.
- 1:58There are a lot of risks involved.
- 2:01The explosive power and heat associated with these products can cause serious injuries and even life threatening injuries if used improperly.
- 2:09Last year,
- 2:11approximately 15,000 Americans were injured from fireworks and majority of that occurred during the 4th of July.
- 2:18Those injuries include permanent loss of eyesight,
- 2:21loss of hearing,
- 2:22a loss of a limb and often times this occurs because the firework is being used improperly.
- 2:29And then again,
- 2:30we always have those burns,
- 2:33even severe burns that can happen on the face or hands,
- 2:36that's really common as well.
- 2:38So truly the only safe way to enjoy fireworks for the 4th of July is to attend a public event where the professionals are in control of the fireworks and your family can just sit back and enjoy the show.
- 2:51I know that that's something that we always enjoy doing as a family and I thought it was kind of interesting and also,
- 2:57I think speaks to the importance of this topic,
- 2:59but just as I was sharing with some of my friends or family members or co workers about you joining us as a guest today to talk about firework safety.
- 3:07I was really amazed at the number of people that said,
- 3:10oh well you know one summer my son or one of my best friend's daughters had a firework accident or um when I was a kid,
- 3:20this happened to me that firework injuries are really comin and so can you share with us a little bit more about what causes those injuries and maybe if there's things that we can do to help prevent them?
- 3:32Right,
- 3:33so home firework displays cost thousands of preventable injuries across the United States.
- 3:39And most of those injuries come from improperly use,
- 3:42right?
- 3:43People not reading the instructions,
- 3:44a short fuse just being a defective product.
- 3:48A lot of times.
- 3:49Obviously these are illegal fireworks that people are using at home.
- 3:52If people relight fireworks or if you have an erratic flight of a firework um that could cause a fire.
- 3:59And then one of the major major issues with safety and fireworks is when drinking is involved.
- 4:05While people are like lighting fireworks,
- 4:07I think in order to lessen someone's chance of being injured.
- 4:11There are five tips that I would just have as a basic rule for families in any neighborhood.
- 4:18For firework celebrations would be one.
- 4:21Children should never be permitted to light the fireworks.
- 4:24There should always be adult supervision.
- 4:27If a child has a sparkler or anything like that to make sure that you read all fireworks instructions carefully.
- 4:34Again,
- 4:3468% of firework injuries are caused by misuse.
- 4:38So really make sure that you know what you're trying to set off?
- 4:42Three,
- 4:42remember that alcohol and fireworks don't mix.
- 4:45So make sure that you have a designated person who is going to set off those fireworks for where protective eyewear that is key.
- 4:54Um,
- 4:54and injury prevention And then five.
- 4:57You really want to be careful when picking up firework debris.
- 4:59A lot of people forget about this,
- 5:01but that can still be really hot and dangerous to touch after they've been set off.
- 5:06So you want to make sure that you wait around 20 minutes um when you've completed the firework show to pick up those pieces and then before you put those pieces into the trash can pour some water on them to reduce the chance of a fire being started.
- 5:22I know that those are all tips that I can share at home.
- 5:25It seems like every summer my husband,
- 5:27I have a conversation about,
- 5:29oh,
- 5:29it's not really safe to hold the firework in our hand or you know,
- 5:33we shouldn't light it while holding it.
- 5:35Thing,
- 5:36things such as that and I think,
- 5:37you know,
- 5:38obviously he's not purposely trying to get injured or to be unsafe with the fireworks.
- 5:43Maybe it was just things that he did did when he was younger or he's just not adequately measuring the risks.
- 5:49So all good tips to share at home.
- 5:52So when setting off fireworks,
- 5:54what are some additional ways that people can stay as safe as possible.
- 5:58Again,
- 5:59just like you mentioned,
- 6:00you don't want to hold fireworks in your hand when you're setting them off.
- 6:04Yes,
- 6:05very key to injury prevention or have any part of your body over the firework wall.
- 6:10You are lighting it again where I protection and this seems like common sense.
- 6:15But accidents happen.
- 6:16You don't want to carry fireworks in your pocket or firecrackers,
- 6:21anything like that because sometimes that friction can set them off.
- 6:24Um,
- 6:25so that's something just to be aware of.
- 6:26Again,
- 6:27always keep fireworks pointed away from homes or from people that may seem like a joke,
- 6:33but again,
- 6:34accidents happen and it's not a safe situation and then you want to make sure that you don't point fireworks towards any type of brush or leaves and then any flammable liquids or substances such as gasoline should definitely be kept from a distance of where you're shooting off these fireworks because last year,
- 6:5350,000 fires were caused by fireworks.
- 6:57Exactly.
- 6:58So that is,
- 6:58it's not just injuries related to shooting them off.
- 7:02But what can happen afterwards as well,
- 7:05All good points.
- 7:06Another thing that I think about with July four and fireworks is that I know they're very difficult on pets,
- 7:12maybe,
- 7:13especially dogs.
- 7:14Do you have tips or information that you can share about what to do with our animals.
- 7:19Yeah.
- 7:19So definitely think about your pet,
- 7:21a lot of issues can happen with them being spooked,
- 7:25by the the noise of fireworks that they are outside or even inside or getting burned from the debris of the fireworks.
- 7:32So the best thing to do for animals is to just keep them inside during those big celebrations because they do have sensitive ears and can be frightened.
- 7:40So when you keep them indoors that really reduce the risk that they'll either get lost or that they'll be injured.
- 7:46I know when I was a kid that our family dog,
- 7:50he would go and hide in the bathtub every year when the neighborhood fireworks celebrations were going off,
- 7:56Are there items that people can keep on hand just in case a firework related injury?
- 8:01Yes.
- 8:01So I would say the best thing to keep on hand is water,
- 8:05for example,
- 8:05with a burn,
- 8:06right?
- 8:06That most common type of injury.
- 8:08The number one thing you can do is to cool it off and take the heat out of the energy so you have water.
- 8:14Then another thing that's helpful with water is unexpected events if your grass starts to be on fire,
- 8:21then you can again pour water on it as well as sparklers.
- 8:26So these get extremely hot and they appear safe,
- 8:29but they burn and can easily ignite clothing or cause severe burning.
- 8:34So being able to drop those sparklers into a bucket of water immediately after it's gone really keeps that danger away and is incredibly important for young kids.
- 8:43And I do,
- 8:43I think that that's great for kiddos,
- 8:45so that they know exactly where that sparkler is to go because I think especially for our small ones,
- 8:50the sparkler might be one of the most popular type of fireworks.
- 8:55So that just that they're instructed before they even start that as soon as your sparkler burns out or if you finish with it,
- 9:00make certain that you put it down in the bucket of water.
- 9:02Exactly.
- 9:04So can you share with us um signs that an injury may be serious enough to seek additional medical attention or even to go to the er yes,
- 9:12so anything with your eyes,
- 9:15that is the most important thing a foreign body in the eye can cause major problems um that can last a lifetime.
- 9:22So a significant injury or a foreign body into the eye,
- 9:26you need to go and have a doctor look at it a second,
- 9:29any break in the skin.
- 9:31If your skin actually breaks,
- 9:33then you need to make sure that you go and get seen by a doctor.
- 9:36But minor burns can be treated at home.
- 9:38So let's talk a little bit about those minor burns,
- 9:41how would we go about treating them at home?
- 9:43Right,
- 9:44so most minor burns can be treated at home,
- 9:46especially if they are about the size of a quarter.
- 9:49Um the first thing you want to do is to cool it off.
- 9:51So stop that burning process um immediately by running it under clean cool water for a few minutes and then you wanna really keep that skin intact.
- 10:01So if a blister does form,
- 10:03try not to pop it right?
- 10:05That skin is a natural band aid and will help in the healing process.
- 10:08So just leave it alone and it will dry up and come off on its own.
- 10:13The things that are most concerning are those larger burns or burns over joints.
- 10:17So if you burn your fingers right,
- 10:19if you're holding on to something and it goes off in your hand,
- 10:22that burn can obviously contract and limit some of your fingers mobility.
- 10:26So you want to have that looked at at a doctor and then any burn or a break with open skin,
- 10:33like firecracker again goes off in your hand,
- 10:35there could be more damage than just that burn because of the force that that firecracker went off with.
- 10:40So any open wound obviously again has a higher risk of infection.
- 10:44So,
- 10:44those need to be looked at great tips.
- 10:47I also I do not want to pass over your mention about eye injuries and the seriousness of eye injuries.
- 10:54So,
- 10:54could you talk a little bit more about what to do if you do experience an eye injury?
- 10:58Right?
- 10:59So the number one thing that you want to do with an eye injury is to seek treatment for anything regarding your eyes.
- 11:05They are so important.
- 11:06So if anything is lodged in the I do not rub your eyes.
- 11:10That's hard cause that's like your first instinct right to put your hands up on your face.
- 11:13But try not to and try not to remove it.
- 11:17If it is a large item again,
- 11:19try to cover both eyes and seek medical attention immediately.
- 11:23So again,
- 11:24the safest thing that you can do if you're around fireworks setting them off is to wear safety goggles or glasses to protect your eyes.
- 11:32And thinking about my,
- 11:34my family at home especially,
- 11:35we have one fairly young kiddo.
- 11:38Are there some alternatives or other fun things that families can do to celebrate the fourth that do not include fireworks?
- 11:46Right?
- 11:46So you want to have kids involved in that celebration?
- 11:48Right?
- 11:48It's fun.
- 11:49It's exciting time.
- 11:50So glow sticks,
- 11:52bubbles,
- 11:53silly string noisemakers,
- 11:56confetti poppers or even water balloons.
- 11:58Um,
- 11:59those are all fun and safe alternatives to fireworks or sparklers that they still feel like they're doing something that's exciting,
- 12:05but it's safe as well.
- 12:06And definitely all things that kiddos enjoy as well.
- 12:09So,
- 12:09Natalie again,
- 12:10I want to thank you for joining us today and as we wrap up,
- 12:14what would be just a few key points of advice that you would give to someone thinking about shooting off fireworks for fun.
- 12:22First tip,
- 12:23go to a professional show,
- 12:25just leave it to the professionals again,
- 12:27that's the safest approach.
- 12:28But if you are going to enjoy fireworks,
- 12:31just be prepared for anything.
- 12:33Number one,
- 12:33protect your eyes always have a bucket of sand and water handy and then make sure to leave the handling of fireworks to a designated adult and keep those fireworks away from Children Again,
- 12:45holidays like the fourth of july our celebrations and fun.
- 12:49But you want to make sure that everyone knows that there is safety issues and that they need to follow the rules to be safe.
- 12:55So that that way it is an enjoyable celebration definitely.
- 12:59And last night I was looking online to figure out when the process the show is going to be hosted in our local area,
- 13:06the times best viewing spots.
- 13:09And so just really encourage folks like you say,
