- 0:35Life, a ministry of the Church for Life. I'm
- 0:37Pastor David. Today, we're doing a Did You Know
- 0:40about Hiroshima, the first atomic bomb. We step
- 0:46into a moment of history that reshaped the world
- 0:48in a single morning. On August 6, 1945, the city
- 0:52of Hiroshima experienced the first use of an
- 0:56atomic weapon in warfare. It was a moment of
- 1:00unimaginable force, and a moment that still speaks
- 1:03to the conscience of nations and the calling
- 1:06of the church. This episode is not about politics,
- 1:10it is about people. It is about the weight of
- 1:13human decisions, and it is about the responsibility
- 1:16we carry today as followers of Christ in a world
- 1:20that still holds the power to destroy itself.
- 1:23So let's walk together into this historical moment
- 1:26with humility, with clarity, and with a commitment
- 1:30to the peace Christ calls us to pursue. So did
- 1:35you know on August 6, 1945, the world entered
- 1:38a new sobering chapter of human history? At exactly
- 1:428 .15 a .m., a B -29 superfortress named Enola
- 1:46Gay released a uranium -based atomic bomb called
- 1:49Little Boy over the Japanese city of Hiroshima.
- 1:53The bomb exploded roughly 1 ,900 feet above Hiroshima
- 1:57to maximize the blast effects over the city.
- 2:00In a single moment, the world witnessed a level
- 2:04of destruction and destructive power that has
- 2:08never been seen before. Temperatures near the
- 2:11center of the fireball reached several thousand
- 2:13degrees. A shock wave raced outward faster. than
- 2:18the speed of sound nearly 70 percent of hiroshima's
- 2:22buildings were destroyed or severely damaged
- 2:26the human toll was staggering immediate deaths
- 2:29were approximately 70 to 80 000 with about 140
- 2:33000 by the end of 1945. tens of thousands more
- 2:38suffered burns radiation sickness leukemia and
- 2:41cancers in the years that followed these survivors
- 2:44became known as the hibakusha living witnesses
- 2:48to the cost of nuclear war. But did you know
- 2:53the decision to use the atomic bomb was shaped
- 2:56by the brutal reality of World War II's final
- 3:01months? Japan had continued fierce resistance
- 3:05even after Germany's surrender. The planned invasion
- 3:09of Japan, Operation Downfall, was expected to
- 3:13result in hundreds of thousands of Allied casualties
- 3:16and even greater losses among the Japanese civilians.
- 3:21The Manhattan Project, led by J. Robert Oppenheimer
- 3:24and General Leslie Groves, had only weeks earlier
- 3:27proven the bomb's capability during the Trinity
- 3:30Test on July 16, 1945. With the war still raging,
- 3:35President Truman authorized its use. Three days
- 3:40after Hiroshima, A second bomb was sent. It was
- 3:45called the Fat Man and was dropped on Nagasaki,
- 3:48leading to Japan's surrender on August 15, 1945
- 3:53and the formal end of World War II. Today, Hiroshima
- 3:59stands as a modern city of more than a million
- 4:02people. The Hiroshima Peace Memorial, also known
- 4:05as the Jimbaku Dome, remains preserved. as a
- 4:10reminder of the human cost of the war and the
- 4:13global responsibility to pursue peace. The bombing
- 4:16of Hiroshima did not just end the war. It began
- 4:19a nuclear age, ignited the Cold War arms race,
- 4:23and launched decades of international debate
- 4:26about ethics, warfare, and the future of humanity.
- 4:31So did you know that one morning in August 1945
- 4:35reshaped the world, challenged our conscience,
- 4:39and continues to call us toward wisdom, restraint,
- 4:43and peace. Where we look at nuclear weapons and
- 4:47we look at our current state in the United States
- 4:50with our war with Iran, it is clear nuclear weapons
- 4:54is not the way and we should do everything in
- 4:57our power to make sure our nuclear weapon cannot
- 4:59be used again. Thank you for joining me today
- 5:03on Voices of Life. a ministry of the church for
- 5:06life the story of hiroshima is not just a chapter
- 5:10in a history book it is a reminder of the value
- 5:14of every human life and the responsibility we

- 5:21the world changed in 1945 but the mission of
- 5:24the church has not we are called to be peacemakers
