- 0:09Speaker 1: What's up, everybody?
- 0:10Speaker 2: Welcome back to another episode of Buco Territory, presented to
- 0:13Speaker 2: you by the Foul Territory Network.
- 0:15Speaker 1: I'm Noah Hiles, joining me.
- 0:16Speaker 2: As always armor co host Platinum Key aka Mark and
- 0:20Speaker 2: Josh Harrison.
- 0:21Speaker 1: We've got a good show for you today. The Pirates had.
- 0:24Speaker 2: A very productive weekend in our nation's capital, take two
- 0:28Speaker 2: of three from the Washington Nationals, a team just ahead
- 0:30Speaker 2: of them in the wildcard race.
- 0:33Speaker 1: An overall winning road trip when.
- 0:35Speaker 2: You consider that they also split with the Philadelphia Philly
- 0:37Speaker 2: so four wins and seven games on the road. They
- 0:40Speaker 2: return home where they will play their final six games
- 0:43Speaker 2: in the first half of the season against the Atlanta
- 0:45Speaker 2: Braves and Milwaukee Brewers at panc Park. This week, we're
- 0:48Speaker 2: gonna talk about the big week ahead. We're gonna talk
- 0:50Speaker 2: about a guy who's been struggling for the Pittsburgh Pirates
- 0:53Speaker 2: and a guy who's actually struggling, not like Paul where
- 0:57Speaker 2: even if it's bad, it's still pretty good.
- 1:00Speaker 1: Mitch Keller.
- 1:01Speaker 2: He's going to be the subject of a segment on
- 1:03Speaker 2: today's show. And then of course we will end our
- 1:06Speaker 2: Monday show how we always do with Mark's Platinum key
- 1:09Speaker 2: of the week. But guys, really big week ahead for
- 1:12Speaker 2: the Pittsburgh Pirates. They're one game over five hundred. They're
- 1:16Speaker 2: gonna be off today. This is Monday Show, But Tuesday
- 1:21Speaker 2: Mark's the start of a three game series against the
- 1:22Speaker 2: Atlanta Braves, a team who swept them about a month
- 1:25Speaker 2: ago to the date.
- 1:28Speaker 1: And then they will play the.
- 1:29Speaker 2: Milwaukee Brewers, who, for my money, are the best team
- 1:33Speaker 2: in the National League right now, right before you close
- 1:36Speaker 2: out before the All Star break, anytime they play the
- 1:40Speaker 2: Brewers right before the All Star break at panc Park. Josh,
- 1:42Speaker 2: you know what series I'm thinking of in twenty eighteen,
- 1:46Speaker 2: or though that was twenty nineteen where you weren't on
- 1:48Speaker 2: that team, right.
- 1:50Speaker 3: The five games.
- 1:53Speaker 1: I'm thinking of the five games, Sweet.
- 1:55Speaker 4: I was gonna say, I just know in twenty eighteen,
- 1:58Speaker 4: I think we did finish with them. We had ten
- 2:01Speaker 4: games and nine days. We had a nine games, ten games,
- 2:06Speaker 4: and it was a makeup game with.
- 2:07Speaker 3: The Brewers over It was like a Saturday doubleheader.
- 2:09Speaker 1: I think, yes, that was a five.
- 2:13Speaker 4: Yeah, that's we'll talk about that a little later off camera,
- 2:16Speaker 4: something that we can bring up later as to what
- 2:18Speaker 4: happened on those days.
- 2:20Speaker 3: But that's for another day, okay, but I'll talk about.
- 2:25Speaker 1: Yes, all right, Well, anyway, the Pirates.
- 2:28Speaker 2: I remember I bring that up because that was a
- 2:31Speaker 2: huge series back then, and that kind of that month
- 2:34Speaker 2: of July was huge for your.
- 2:36Speaker 1: Twenty eighteen buckos.
- 2:37Speaker 2: It's the reason you guys ended up buying at the deadline.
- 2:40Speaker 2: That momentum started to build, and that's the opportunity that
- 2:43Speaker 2: exists for this Pirates team. They're playing fine baseball right now. Honestly,
- 2:49Speaker 2: they probably should have had even a better road trip
- 2:52Speaker 2: that they got a little bit better pitching, but the
- 2:53Speaker 2: fact that they went in to two teams in the
- 2:56Speaker 2: NL East who are ahead of them in the standings
- 2:59Speaker 2: and had a winning road trip. Now they come home,
- 3:02Speaker 2: they've got this is by far their most challenging home
- 3:05Speaker 2: stand of the season. When you look at the combined
- 3:07Speaker 2: records of these two teams, I'll just open up the floor.
- 3:11Speaker 2: I mean, what is a successful showing here? Is it
- 3:15Speaker 2: as simple as splitting and staying over five hundred, or
- 3:18Speaker 2: do you have to win one of.
- 3:19Speaker 1: These two series?
- 3:20Speaker 3: Like?
- 3:20Speaker 1: What are you looking to see from the Pirates. We'll
- 3:22Speaker 1: start with Mark here.
- 3:24Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean I think three and three is your goal.
- 3:27Speaker 5: Anything better than that, you're going to be really happy
- 3:29Speaker 5: if you're going four and too against two division winners
- 3:32Speaker 5: and or two division leaders, I should say in the
- 3:35Speaker 5: National League right now. So this is a huge barometer
- 3:38Speaker 5: for where this team's at. If I'm Ben Cherrington or
- 3:42Speaker 5: Bob Nudding, I'm going to be looking at this series
- 3:44Speaker 5: and saying, are these upcoming two series? Are we a
- 3:47Speaker 5: legitimate contender? Because these are two teams that are going
- 3:50Speaker 5: to be in the playoffs for the National League? I
- 3:52Speaker 5: would I think that's pretty safe to say both over
- 3:56Speaker 5: fifty wins, you know, pretty good spots. So this is
- 4:00Speaker 5: a great parameter to see where this team is at
- 4:04Speaker 5: and how you stack up against that competition. Is it
- 4:06Speaker 5: going to be worth it to go in and buy
- 4:08Speaker 5: at this trade deadline? We know the pirates are planning
- 4:11Speaker 5: on it. But if you go in, you go out
- 4:13Speaker 5: five and one in this homestand I mean that is
- 4:18Speaker 5: a clear sign to the front office that this is
- 4:20Speaker 5: a team worth investing in. That's going to be a
- 4:22Speaker 5: huge bolster to the standings right before the All Star break.
- 4:28Speaker 5: It's a huge opportunity for this team. So yeah, I mean,
- 4:32Speaker 5: anything better than three and three I'll be happy with
- 4:34Speaker 5: anything less than that. It feels like it's going to
- 4:36Speaker 5: be a wasted opportunity even though there are two really
- 4:40Speaker 5: good teams. If you want to be a good team yourself,
- 4:42Speaker 5: these are the type of teams you have to stand
- 4:43Speaker 5: out and play well against and beat. Josh, what are
- 4:46Speaker 5: your thoughts?
- 4:49Speaker 4: Anything less than six and zero is unaccepted playing? I
- 4:53Speaker 4: love it, No, But you know, obviously players are in there,
- 4:57Speaker 4: and you know they want to win every game because
- 5:00Speaker 4: ordless of it being close to All Star Break, you know,
- 5:02Speaker 4: it's just what you expect. But knowing what lies ahead
- 5:05Speaker 4: of you with these two opponents, I don't think it's
- 5:07Speaker 4: unfair to say if you were to finish five hundred,
- 5:09Speaker 4: three and three, I think anybody would say against two
- 5:12Speaker 4: worthy opponents like this, if you're if you're hoving around
- 5:15Speaker 4: three and three, that means you got an opportunity to
- 5:17Speaker 4: be foign two over the home stand.
- 5:20Speaker 3: But the real kicker is how they is it Atlanta first? Yep?
- 5:25Speaker 4: Yeah, So you have to take care of, you know,
- 5:29Speaker 4: winning a series there if you can, because you know
- 5:33Speaker 4: you have no real what's the word I'm looking for you?
- 5:38Speaker 4: You really can't change the standings because you're not playing
- 5:40Speaker 4: in the vision. You know, you got to hold your
- 5:43Speaker 4: end of the bargain. But those ones against Milwaukee, obviously
- 5:45Speaker 4: you can make up ground, but you know, it's a
- 5:49Speaker 4: situation where you don't look too far ahead to say
- 5:52Speaker 4: we have to do this this home stand. Take a
- 5:54Speaker 4: one game at a time, especially against teams like this,
- 5:57Speaker 4: because when you look too far in the future, you know.
- 5:59Speaker 3: So times you don't focus on those key moments.
- 6:02Speaker 4: You know what's ahead of you, and we know what
- 6:04Speaker 4: this you know, we could mean heading into All Star break,
- 6:07Speaker 4: heading into possible trade deadline a couple of weeks down
- 6:10Speaker 4: the line, and as you said, Mark, they got a
- 6:12Speaker 4: really good opportunity to continue to push forward and make
- 6:16Speaker 4: a case to see how we stack up against these teams.
- 6:18Speaker 4: And obviously we know what areas they need help in.
- 6:22Speaker 4: But may give you a little bit more idea of okay,
- 6:26Speaker 4: yes we are just this little piece away or you know,
- 6:29Speaker 4: this piece of saying you know what, because as you said,
- 6:32Speaker 4: you just came off of two teams that are ahead
- 6:34Speaker 4: of you in a wild card and you went, you know,
- 6:37Speaker 4: four and three over a seven game road trip, and
- 6:39Speaker 4: those were on the road and now you're coming home.
- 6:43Speaker 4: You know, you almost want to feel that you like
- 6:45Speaker 4: your eyes better playing on home turf. So for there,
- 6:48Speaker 4: I would say Mark, I'm not disagreeing with the three
- 6:50Speaker 4: and three, but I would really like to say four
- 6:53Speaker 4: and two, just because you got that individual opponent and
- 6:55Speaker 4: you want to make sure that you can make up
- 6:56Speaker 4: as much ground as you can.
- 6:59Speaker 2: Yeah, the number on my mind is two. I think
- 7:03Speaker 2: there's only one guy. No, no, no, no, not not the
- 7:06Speaker 2: way you're thinking. There's only one guy making two starts
- 7:08Speaker 2: in his home stand.
- 7:09Speaker 1: His name's Paul Schemes. You need to win both of
- 7:11Speaker 1: those games.
- 7:12Speaker 5: And his start on Sunday is lined up right now.
- 7:15Speaker 5: It would be Jacob Mizerowski, and that's great.
- 7:18Speaker 1: It doesn't matter.
- 7:19Speaker 2: It doesn't matter if it's against Cy Young or Nolan
- 7:22Speaker 2: Ryan or Bob.
- 7:23Speaker 1: Gibson or whoever else. Paul, this is your time.
- 7:28Speaker 2: There's a lot of chatter going on from everyone in
- 7:32Speaker 2: the baseball world. Shut them all up so you don't
- 7:35Speaker 2: have to talk about it at the All Star break.
- 7:37Speaker 2: If you're the best picture in the world. This is
- 7:39Speaker 2: what the best picture in the world does when his
- 7:41Speaker 2: team has a little bit of momentum going you throw
- 7:43Speaker 2: gas on the fire and you say, get on my back.
- 7:46Speaker 2: I got us. I don't care it's the Atlanta Braves.
- 7:49Speaker 2: I don't care if it's the Milwaukee Brewers. I don't
- 7:50Speaker 2: care if it's Jacob Mizerowski or Chris Sale or whoever
- 7:53Speaker 2: the hell is on the other mound.
- 7:55Speaker 1: If you're the best picture in the world, this is
- 7:57Speaker 1: where you show it. So that that's my big.
- 8:00Speaker 2: Takeaway is for this week, it's as good as you
- 8:04Speaker 2: could ask for, as far as it set up for
- 8:07Speaker 2: the Pirates in the sense where you're getting Paul twice
- 8:09Speaker 2: and you're getting a pissed off Paul Skins.
- 8:12Speaker 1: Some people think he's lost.
- 8:13Speaker 2: Some people have suggested maybe optioning him and letting him
- 8:17Speaker 2: get right, or putting them on the I l.
- 8:20Speaker 1: I'm basically break.
- 8:24Speaker 3: I mean, I know what you mean.
- 8:25Speaker 2: Yeah, it's ridiculous, but that's this is his chance to
- 8:32Speaker 2: shut it all up, to show that he's still the
- 8:34Speaker 2: guy and end the damn losing streak. Now and it
- 8:39Speaker 2: starts on Tuesday, and you get another You got another
- 8:43Speaker 2: shot Sunday. The Brewers have had his number from pretty
- 8:46Speaker 2: much his whole career, so I'm looking forward to covering
- 8:51Speaker 2: those two games, because, like I said, there's never been
- 8:55Speaker 2: more pressure on Paul Skins as a major League picture
- 8:58Speaker 2: as there is this week. And if the Pirates can
- 9:01Speaker 2: win those two, then you just got to win one
- 9:04Speaker 2: more and you're guaranteed to be over five hundred heading
- 9:06Speaker 2: into the All Star Break and you're guaranteed to be
- 9:08Speaker 2: in the mix still. So my number for this one too,
- 9:12Speaker 2: Paul Schemes gets to pitch twice, win both of those games.
- 9:16Speaker 1: Figure it out from there on. All right, So we're.
- 9:22Speaker 2: Gonna take a quick break. When we come back, we're
- 9:24Speaker 2: going to talk about a guy who also needs to
- 9:26Speaker 2: start winning on his start days. His name is Mitch Keller.
- 9:29Speaker 2: Well get we'll get right into it after this ad.
- 9:33Speaker 6: Hey, for the families out there looking for a different
- 9:36Speaker 6: path to help your child succeed at home, looking to
- 9:39Speaker 6: K twelve powered schools, Todd Father, you've done the homeschooling
- 9:42Speaker 6: thing in the past.
- 9:43Speaker 3: I know you liked it.
- 9:44Speaker 7: Yeah, I did. I liked it a lot. All my
- 9:46Speaker 7: kids have done it before. It's an opportunity for them
- 9:49Speaker 7: to stay at home and enjoy school just as much.
- 9:53Speaker 7: They learn a lot. And this is an opportunity for
- 9:56Speaker 7: families that are on the go too as well. They
- 9:58Speaker 7: have to understand Listen, can't be at a regular school
- 10:01Speaker 7: at all times. I need my child to be doing this,
- 10:03Speaker 7: whether it's an athletic career, whatever stature they are at.
- 10:07Speaker 7: And we loved every second of it, and I think
- 10:09Speaker 7: it is an easy opportunity for some children.

- 10:28Speaker 6: number twelve dot com slash foul. K twelve dot com
- 10:32Speaker 6: slash foul.
- 10:35Speaker 2: All right, Mitch Keller has not been good. His last
- 10:40Speaker 2: outing was on Friday. It was so bad that Tyler
- 10:43Speaker 2: Callahan finished the game on the mountain for the Pirates.
- 10:47Speaker 2: That's a position player for the uneducated, So that's not good.
- 10:52Speaker 2: Mitch Keller just had a really bad year, guys, no
- 10:55Speaker 2: way to sugarcoat it. His numbers on the season, he
- 10:59Speaker 2: is and six with a five oh two earned run average,
- 11:02Speaker 2: and it's it's not a fugazy five oh two.
- 11:05Speaker 1: It's a legit.
- 11:06Speaker 2: I mean, you go month by month, and Mark has
- 11:09Speaker 2: the Baseball Savant page up on the screen here, I'm
- 11:14Speaker 2: just gonna do his month.
- 11:15Speaker 1: Splits real quick.
- 11:16Speaker 2: He had a three eighteen e R in March and April,
- 11:21Speaker 2: which was good. May and June are typically Mitch's two
- 11:24Speaker 2: best months every single year of his career, especially like
- 11:28Speaker 2: in the last three four years. But this year May
- 11:30Speaker 2: a five to five oh he earned run average, June
- 11:33Speaker 2: a six two seven ERA, and then he's got a
- 11:37Speaker 2: seven and a half earned run average in July and
- 11:39Speaker 2: is just one outing. So my question isn't necessarily how
- 11:43Speaker 2: do you get Mitch Keller right? Mitch Keller has been
- 11:46Speaker 2: in the major leagues enough where he should be able
- 11:48Speaker 2: to find those answers, or the people around him should
- 11:50Speaker 2: be able to help him find those answers. I'm more
- 11:54Speaker 2: thinking along these lines, how much longer do you let.
- 11:57Speaker 1: Him fail before you demote him?
- 12:00Speaker 2: Because, simply put, there is a better starting pitcher in
- 12:05Speaker 2: the bullpen right now than Mitch Keller. His name's Carmen Magensky,
- 12:08Speaker 2: and Mitch Keller is your highest paid player on the
- 12:11Speaker 2: team this year. Mitch Keller is your most seniored pitcher
- 12:15Speaker 2: on the team. Mitch Keller is a former All Star.
- 12:17Speaker 2: Mitch Keller is a leader.
- 12:19Speaker 1: But if Mitch.
- 12:20Speaker 2: Keller is gonna have a high an ERA higher than five,
- 12:28Speaker 2: maybe he'd be better off being a swingman for a
- 12:30Speaker 2: little bit.
- 12:31Speaker 1: Let him figure it out. I'll start with Josh.
- 12:34Speaker 2: I mean, and Josh, I'm not asking you to call
- 12:36Speaker 2: out a guy who obviously, you know, you share a
- 12:37Speaker 2: clubhouse with and spring training back in your days with
- 12:39Speaker 2: the Pirates.
- 12:40Speaker 1: But more so, I mean, what's the process like there?
- 12:43Speaker 2: I mean, is that something that they should consider if
- 12:46Speaker 2: this slump, if you want to call it a slump,
- 12:49Speaker 2: it's just been a bad year.
- 12:51Speaker 1: How much longer does.
- 12:52Speaker 2: He get to kind of figure this out where he
- 12:56Speaker 2: gets demoted.
- 13:00Speaker 3: Questions?
- 13:00Speaker 4: But I think they're gonna give him at leash one.
- 13:02Speaker 4: You're talking about a guy that was past year or two,
- 13:05Speaker 4: been one of the more talked about arms as far
- 13:08Speaker 4: as trade, you know, possibilities, which is how durable he is.
- 13:12Speaker 4: Obviously his numbers aren't helping that case as far as
- 13:15Speaker 4: trade or whatever the case may be. But it's a
- 13:18Speaker 4: guy that's in a situation where nobody really I would say,
- 13:22Speaker 4: foresaw is coming, but you know, you play this game
- 13:25Speaker 4: long enough, you're gonna be hit on the channel a
- 13:27Speaker 4: couple of times. And not making any excuses for Mitch.
- 13:31Speaker 4: But looking a little further, you know, is this a
- 13:34Speaker 4: situation where obviously, is it something that is mental where
- 13:39Speaker 4: he's not pitching it, is he falling behind counts? He's
- 13:42Speaker 4: not a guy that walks a lot of people. But
- 13:44Speaker 4: is this something that obviously where his in game adjustments
- 13:48Speaker 4: of game to game, is that something that he's struggling
- 13:52Speaker 4: with with a new pitching coach. All these things that
- 13:56Speaker 4: factor into your preparation. When your guy has done it
- 13:59Speaker 4: for as long as you have, obviously everything is on
- 14:02Speaker 4: you because that's that's what you do, that's your process,
- 14:05Speaker 4: that's that's your craft.
- 14:06Speaker 3: But there are also key moments that you know, you
- 14:09Speaker 3: rely on that.
- 14:10Speaker 4: Pitching culture, that hitting culture, you know, this bullpen catcher
- 14:13Speaker 4: that has seen you in these moments of you know what,
- 14:17Speaker 4: you know what, I just think you're you know, overthinking
- 14:20Speaker 4: something or maybe the case, but uh, I.
- 14:22Speaker 3: Think it's a situation where you gotta you got a
- 14:24Speaker 3: guy that has.
- 14:25Speaker 4: To figure it out, and I don't think demoting him
- 14:29Speaker 4: is going to help because you demote him well, even
- 14:33Speaker 4: in a in a bullpen. We've seen the time and
- 14:36Speaker 4: time again the bullpen was the big issue, and now
- 14:38Speaker 4: we're looking at starting pitching. I don't think starting pitching
- 14:41Speaker 4: is something that you're just going to give up on
- 14:43Speaker 4: because there's not many arms that's going to go out
- 14:46Speaker 4: there and give you a Mitch is going to give you.
- 14:48Speaker 4: Granted that has not gone well, we can all attest
- 14:50Speaker 4: to that, but I honestly think as you're getting close
- 14:53Speaker 4: to this All Star break, he might be a guy
- 14:55Speaker 4: that may just need that quick All Star break, you know,
- 14:58Speaker 4: reset and and my monitor, how he comes, monitors next
- 15:02Speaker 4: start and see how it is. Because obviously they're playing
- 15:04Speaker 4: for something, and not to say it, there's still somebody
- 15:09Speaker 4: out there that may be willing to say, hey, we
- 15:11Speaker 4: would trade for this guy. If you're thinking that Carmen
- 15:13Speaker 4: may be better, and Mitch's like, I don't want to
- 15:15Speaker 4: go to the bullpen, obviously it's a guy that that's
- 15:18Speaker 4: gonna be a tough situation to ask him make can
- 15:21Speaker 4: you go to the bullpen?
- 15:21Speaker 3: When coming into this season, it was okay, you got Paul,
- 15:25Speaker 3: you had Mitch.
- 15:25Speaker 4: Those were the two and then you're like, Okay, we
- 15:27Speaker 4: know you know the other guy's limits on innings and things.
- 15:33Speaker 4: It just shows you how quickly things can change. But
- 15:37Speaker 4: I'm a firm believer in you gotta trust the guy's
- 15:39Speaker 4: track record. He's going through these struggles, and when you're
- 15:43Speaker 4: in the team this situation, you wouldn't have thought that
- 15:46Speaker 4: the Pirates would have been having struggles sitting in this
- 15:48Speaker 4: and Mitch would be a part of the struggles.
- 15:49Speaker 3: So I think they're gonna give him opportunity.
- 15:51Speaker 4: But you had two three weeks before, you know, you
- 15:56Speaker 4: got to make some decisions. So if it continues to
- 15:59Speaker 4: trend the way it is, I could see them doing it,
- 16:02Speaker 4: But I don't think they're going to do it before
- 16:04Speaker 4: All Star break, and I don't think they're going to
- 16:06Speaker 4: do it right after.
- 16:08Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, Mitch Keller has earned a long leash
- 16:11Speaker 5: for this starting rotation. I think, Noah, you you mentioned
- 16:15Speaker 5: his leadership aspect. I think that's a really important thing
- 16:18Speaker 5: to consider with how you handle this whole situation. But
- 16:22Speaker 5: at the same time, there's only so much leadership a
- 16:25Speaker 5: guy can bring when he's also bringing the team down
- 16:28Speaker 5: with a five era over five that it's just unacceptable
- 16:32Speaker 5: and I think Mitch would be the first one to
- 16:34Speaker 5: tell you that as well. And the kind of scary
- 16:37Speaker 5: part about this is when you look at a statast page,
- 16:41Speaker 5: the under the hood metrics, I mean, it's not like
- 16:43Speaker 5: he's getting unlucky. It doesn't seem like it's just like
- 16:46Speaker 5: the defense is doing poor behind him. The expected batting average,
- 16:51Speaker 5: you see that two ninety two fourth percentile of MLB
- 16:55Speaker 5: that that's a lot of contact that's being made. You
- 16:59Speaker 5: look at the breaking breaking run values in the first percentile,
- 17:02Speaker 5: where he's basically got a fastball right now, and that's
- 17:06Speaker 5: all he really has to work with. And we've seen
- 17:08Speaker 5: Mitch give up base runners in the past. I mean,
- 17:11Speaker 5: his whip is just a little bit higher than it
- 17:13Speaker 5: was in twenty twenty five, but he's just not getting
- 17:17Speaker 5: any of the punch outs that you're seeing usually that
- 17:19Speaker 5: help get rid of those guys when they're on the bases,
- 17:22Speaker 5: get you out of those jams. And so yeah, it's
- 17:24Speaker 5: just he's had one start in his last six starts
- 17:27Speaker 5: where he's given up less than three year in runs. Yeah,
- 17:31Speaker 5: he's gone to the sixth inning or he's given you
- 17:33Speaker 5: six innings a couple times, which that helps this bullpen,
- 17:37Speaker 5: but it just has not been quality innings right now. Yeah,
- 17:41Speaker 5: and so it's really concerning for the level of investment
- 17:45Speaker 5: that this team has. We've seen Mitch Keller go through
- 17:49Speaker 5: struggles in the past and overcome them. I mean, he
- 17:51Speaker 5: was one of the worst pitchers in baseball just a
- 17:53Speaker 5: few years ago. Overcame that, battled, worked really hard, got
- 17:57Speaker 5: himself in a great position, and the stuff a big contract.
- 18:01Speaker 5: There's a reason why the Pirates gave him this money
- 18:04Speaker 5: because he's shown the this chad Innians eater in the past,
- 18:08Speaker 5: and then this year the results have just been really bad.
- 18:11Speaker 5: So I don't know, what do you think? No, to
- 18:14Speaker 5: wrap us up.
- 18:16Speaker 2: Yeah, the thing that scares me about Keller is he's
- 18:22Speaker 2: always worse than the second half.
- 18:23Speaker 1: Mm hmm, like always. I'm looking at his career splits
- 18:27Speaker 1: right now.
- 18:28Speaker 2: His career hitters have a career seven to twenty ops
- 18:32Speaker 2: against him in the first half. It goes up to
- 18:34Speaker 2: eight twenty three in the second half. He has a
- 18:37Speaker 2: career ere era of five thirteen in the second half
- 18:41Speaker 2: of a season.
- 18:43Speaker 1: So, I mean, that's that's the book I'm mitch.
- 18:45Speaker 2: And like what I pointed out earlier is how May
- 18:48Speaker 2: and June Mitch Keller is like typically one of the
- 18:50Speaker 2: best pitchers in the National League, like you just go
- 18:55Speaker 2: through it, like from twenty three through twenty five, May
- 19:00Speaker 2: and June splits are fantastic. He had a really good
- 19:03Speaker 2: second half, I will say in twenty two that's kind
- 19:05Speaker 2: of when he figured it out, like what Mark alluded to.
- 19:08Speaker 2: But in twenty three he kind of ran out of
- 19:10Speaker 2: gas just because they didn't have another pitcher in the
- 19:12Speaker 2: rotation that year who could log innings aside.
- 19:15Speaker 1: From Ovi, and we all know how that ended up going.
- 19:18Speaker 2: And then in twenty four and twenty five he was
- 19:21Speaker 2: He should have probably been an All Star in twenty four,
- 19:23Speaker 2: and then the wheels fell off in August and that
- 19:26Speaker 2: really hurt the team because he couldn't cover the innings
- 19:29Speaker 2: they needed him too, and they had a whole bunch
- 19:31Speaker 2: of rookies who were on pitch limits around him. And
- 19:34Speaker 2: then last year, I don't think he was as bad
- 19:36Speaker 2: in the second half, but it was inconsistent. It would
- 19:40Speaker 2: be one good one, one bad one, two good ones,
- 19:42Speaker 2: two bad ones. And so when I'm looking at how
- 19:46Speaker 2: he's trending right now, like you look at those under
- 19:49Speaker 2: the hood numbers.
- 19:49Speaker 1: You look at just.
- 19:51Speaker 2: His overall performance in the first half. This is the
- 19:54Speaker 2: worst first half of a season Mitch Keller's had since
- 19:57Speaker 2: he became the Mitch Keller that we I'll know. So
- 20:02Speaker 2: and when your reputation is you get worse as the
- 20:05Speaker 2: season goes on.
- 20:06Speaker 1: That's why I think bulls.
- 20:07Speaker 2: That's why when Josh says, like the idea of trading him, like,
- 20:11Speaker 2: I haven't heard one single thing to suggest that it's
- 20:17Speaker 2: the lowest spending years, and they have tried to trade
- 20:19Speaker 2: him in recent years. But man, if someone wants to
- 20:24Speaker 2: take him, I wouldn't be opposed to it because you
- 20:26Speaker 2: get that money and you could probably reinvest that in
- 20:30Speaker 2: a better picture. You could probably Yeah, you could flip it,
- 20:33Speaker 2: and I think they could be a better team if
- 20:36Speaker 2: he's going to continue playing like this.
- 20:38Speaker 1: So I agree though with what Josh. If what Josh
- 20:41Speaker 1: said is true, like I think an All Star break
- 20:44Speaker 1: would do him well right now.
- 20:47Speaker 8: But man, but said Mark, you said, he's pretty much
- 20:53Speaker 8: limited to just a fastball right now, that right there,
- 20:56Speaker 8: if all you're throwing, If that that right, there is
- 20:58Speaker 8: a big tail if that's all you and you got
- 21:00Speaker 8: no secondary pitch, right now.
- 21:02Speaker 4: And to go to those numbers of May and June.
- 21:04Speaker 4: We talked about this early in the season with them
- 21:07Speaker 4: not letting him go deeper. Is that not allowing him
- 21:10Speaker 4: to stay at sharp? So now when you want him
- 21:12Speaker 4: to hitters are getting sharper as the season goes. So
- 21:15Speaker 4: sometimes maybe he's finding his struggle. Now I'm just thinking
- 21:18Speaker 4: outside the box, new pitching coach, all these different things.
- 21:22Speaker 4: Maybe it's a tale where after all Star Break he
- 21:25Speaker 4: flips it to say I had my bad August and
- 21:27Speaker 4: September this year. In May and June, who knows. But
- 21:30Speaker 4: as you said, they don't have much time. Yeah, they
- 21:33Speaker 4: don't have exactly. They don't have much time to sit
- 21:35Speaker 4: here and say, all right, you got to now because
- 21:38Speaker 4: if things continue to trend, you gotta do what's best
- 21:42Speaker 4: and make the team the best that you can.
- 21:43Speaker 3: And if that's you know.
- 21:46Speaker 4: Putting him in a bullpen's put him in a bullpen,
- 21:48Speaker 4: if that's trading him, or hey he figured it out.
- 21:50Speaker 4: But that right there, it dawned on me when you
- 21:53Speaker 4: say he's limited to just a fastball, that right there,
- 21:57Speaker 4: any even your less than average big league or is
- 22:00Speaker 4: ready to hit a fastball, especially if it's not ninety
- 22:04Speaker 4: eight plus, So that right there is at a situation
- 22:07Speaker 4: of him not really having that past pitching coach that
- 22:11Speaker 4: was able to say, oh, you know what, you're missing
- 22:14Speaker 4: your grip or your mentality? Who knows this a lot,
- 22:16Speaker 4: it's so many things. But as you said, he can't
- 22:19Speaker 4: continue to trend this way because he's a guy that
- 22:22Speaker 4: they really relied on, and when one of those guys
- 22:25Speaker 4: isn't giving you what you thought you were going to
- 22:27Speaker 4: get makes the things a lot harder.
- 22:30Speaker 2: Kind of funny how every one of the pitchers got
- 22:31Speaker 2: worse this year home all right, we're going to take
- 22:34Speaker 2: another Yeah, we're going to take another break when we
- 22:37Speaker 2: come back. Platinum Key's key of the week Here on

- 24:18Speaker 5: All right, now, my key of the week segment here,
- 24:29Speaker 5: all right, I can hear Josh chuckling in the background,
- 24:33Speaker 5: small favor, Yeah, yes, sir. All right, So this week's
- 24:37Speaker 5: key of the week, I wanted to highlight a standout
- 24:40Speaker 5: from this recent trip or away trip, and that was
- 24:44Speaker 5: Nick and Zalez, who has just been absolutely tearing the
- 24:47Speaker 5: cover off the ball. He's slashing in his last five games,
- 24:51Speaker 5: he's slashing five seventy one. He's gotten on base percentage
- 24:55Speaker 5: of six twenty five, he's slugging eight ten. So that's
- 24:59Speaker 5: a fourteen hundred and thirty five ops, twelve hits and
- 25:03Speaker 5: twenty one at bats, a couple doubles, a home run,
- 25:06Speaker 5: five RBI. Just really really helping this Pirates offense when
- 25:11Speaker 5: they are down O'Neil Cruz and Spencer Horwitz just I
- 25:17Speaker 5: can't express, I mean, how critical it is the season
- 25:22Speaker 5: that Nickensalz is having to this offense. We talked all
- 25:26Speaker 5: offseason about how the Pirates need to add at third base.
- 25:29Speaker 5: They're two week there, that's the biggest hole on this team.
- 25:33Speaker 5: Nickensalaz Sunday night, so this was prior to Sunday's game,
- 25:37Speaker 5: is being accumulated into his ward. He has a one
- 25:41Speaker 5: point five f War right now, that's more than Alex Bregman,
- 25:44Speaker 5: Matt Chapman, Bob Baschett, Noel Arnado, Manny Machado, Alec Bohm,
- 25:50Speaker 5: Austin Riley, Brett Batty. He is a top ten third
- 25:54Speaker 5: baseman in Major League Baseball for this first half of
- 25:57Speaker 5: the season. Yeah, he might be just smack like on
- 26:00Speaker 5: a really hot streak, but the value that he's provided
- 26:05Speaker 5: has just been insane. And that's even with his defense
- 26:09Speaker 5: being not that great. I just pulled up his stackast
- 26:11Speaker 5: page here. He's outs above average negative three this year,
- 26:15Speaker 5: fourteenth percentile, not good, but with his just what he's
- 26:20Speaker 5: doing with his batting average alone basically is providing such
- 26:24Speaker 5: great value. Yeah, he's not going to be slugging the ball,
- 26:26Speaker 5: but we'll leave that to the Brandon Lows and the
- 26:28Speaker 5: s Marlan valdes Is who are driving him home. And
- 26:32Speaker 5: so yeah, I just I'm so impressed with Nickenzals capitalizing
- 26:36Speaker 5: on this opportunity. And one last note, his base running.
- 26:42Speaker 5: No one really talks about it. He doesn't really steal
- 26:44Speaker 5: a lot, but he he does really well on the
- 26:48Speaker 5: bass paths. So one of those just underrated things that
- 26:52Speaker 5: I don't really ever hear anyone mentioning you have you know,
- 26:54Speaker 5: ONEO Cruz and kind of Griffin. It's easy to pay
- 26:57Speaker 5: attention to those speedsters, but he's in the seventh percentile
- 27:00Speaker 5: for speed as well. So really really like what Nick
- 27:03Speaker 5: and Zalez has been doing in is Age twenty seven season.
- 27:05Speaker 5: Here throw it over to you guys. What are your
- 27:09Speaker 5: thoughts on nicking Zalaz.
- 27:12Speaker 4: Yeah, I definitely don't disagree with it. I believe somebody
- 27:17Speaker 4: asked me that a couple of weeks back when I
- 27:19Speaker 4: was in Pittsburgh, like one of the U I guess
- 27:22Speaker 4: biggest surprises or somebody that I thought this season kind
- 27:27Speaker 4: of not flowing under the radar, but deserved it a
- 27:29Speaker 4: little bit more credit.
- 27:29Speaker 3: And I said Nick Gonzalez.
- 27:32Speaker 4: One earlier this year, before the season, I think we
- 27:35Speaker 4: talked about, you know, with when Connor comes up, you
- 27:39Speaker 4: know he's gonna be the eye man out and what
- 27:41Speaker 4: to do with NICKI G even had the comments of
- 27:44Speaker 4: you know, don Dk and Spring talking about the competition
- 27:47Speaker 4: with him and Triolo. It was just like a lot
- 27:50Speaker 4: of you know, is that you know, fuel to the
- 27:53Speaker 4: fire for NICKI G. And you know, I just saw
- 27:56Speaker 4: what I saw was a lot of my situation of
- 27:59Speaker 4: a knowing he was gonna make a team, but not
- 28:01Speaker 4: knowing where he was gonna play. That was my story
- 28:03Speaker 4: for three years. So it's nice to see somebody that's like, man,
- 28:07Speaker 4: I know I'm gonna play, I'm normal on the team,
- 28:08Speaker 4: but like I can play here, but put me wherever.
- 28:11Speaker 3: I just want to help the team.
- 28:12Speaker 4: And I think he's been a very instrumental part to
- 28:16Speaker 4: their success because, as you mentioned a lot of the names,
- 28:18Speaker 4: his team was built on offense. So for you to
- 28:20Speaker 4: talk about his third base, you know, defense, it's like, Okay,
- 28:23Speaker 4: it hasn't really harmed him. Yes, he's had some plays
- 28:26Speaker 4: here or there, but he hasn't also just strictly played third.
- 28:29Speaker 3: He's bounced around, But I think he's been a.
- 28:31Speaker 4: Bright spot, especially on the team that's had some injuries,
- 28:33Speaker 4: has had some pieces here there, moving, He's been a
- 28:36Speaker 4: guy that's been nice to just plug in, that's bounced around,
- 28:39Speaker 4: and it sees a lot of his opportunities. So I
- 28:41Speaker 4: don't disagree, because it's not easy to do what he's
- 28:45Speaker 4: been asked to do, and he's taking it on and
- 28:48Speaker 4: helping anyway.
- 28:48Speaker 2: Can Yeah, I mean Mark said, you know, and his
- 28:54Speaker 2: opening monologue there that it might just be like a
- 28:57Speaker 2: hot streak, but it's not. I Mean, this guy's fifth
- 29:00Speaker 2: and batting average in the National League, Like that's an
- 29:03Speaker 2: objective win for Nick and Zalez. I mean his OPS
- 29:06Speaker 2: is seven to sixty six, Like, that's that's a good OPS.
- 29:10Speaker 2: That would have been the second best OPS on the
- 29:13Speaker 2: team last year. So I mean on this team, it's not.
- 29:16Speaker 2: But this is the Nick and Zalez that the Pirates
- 29:19Speaker 2: took seventh overall. That was a top one hundred prospect
- 29:22Speaker 2: that due to injuries and just maybe some prolonged development,
- 29:27Speaker 2: we didn't really see that happening at any point in
- 29:30Speaker 2: his major league career, And candidly, this was probably his
- 29:34Speaker 2: last chance to prove it. Like if you look at
- 29:36Speaker 2: where he was last at the beginning of this season,
- 29:39Speaker 2: they traded for a second baseman who only had a
- 29:41Speaker 2: year of remaining control. But did Tamar coming up. Yeah,
- 29:44Speaker 2: I mean this was a big time proven year for
- 29:47Speaker 2: Nick and Zalez. I don't think he's necessarily proved that
- 29:50Speaker 2: he's the future at third base, but I think he's
- 29:52Speaker 2: proved that he's a future infielder for the Pittsburgh probably
- 29:56Speaker 2: second base next year after lows gone, which is where
- 29:59Speaker 2: he's much better defensively. But I mean, yeah, you just look,
- 30:02Speaker 2: and I've always liked this about Nick and Zalez. When
- 30:05Speaker 2: he's on, he's so much more of an aggressive hitter
- 30:08Speaker 2: than really anyone on this team not.
- 30:10Speaker 1: Named Jake banngam So.
- 30:12Speaker 2: And you see a lot of these other guys on
- 30:15Speaker 2: the team, they see a lot of pitches they watch.
- 30:19Speaker 2: They're passive and it's not necessarily a bad thing, but
- 30:23Speaker 2: his low walk rate, it could be frustrating at times,
- 30:26Speaker 2: but that throws the rhythm away from all of those
- 30:31Speaker 2: starting pitchers who are used to going okay, I can
- 30:33Speaker 2: get him to fish whoa hang on?
- 30:35Speaker 1: This guy's coming out of the gates.
- 30:37Speaker 2: It's like when you're a boxer and you fight five
- 30:40Speaker 2: guys in a row who are just going to feel
- 30:42Speaker 2: you out for the first couple of rounds, and then
- 30:45Speaker 2: you fight Marvin Hagler and he's just coming out swinging
- 30:48Speaker 2: at you in the opening round and you're like, what
- 30:49Speaker 2: the hell's going on.
- 30:51Speaker 1: That's what he does for this lineup.
- 30:52Speaker 2: And it's working like they've constructed it very well, and
- 30:57Speaker 2: he and mang them both. I think the traditional type
- 31:01Speaker 2: of hitter you're looking for in twenty twenty six, but
- 31:03Speaker 2: when you pair them alongside guys who already gel well together,
- 31:09Speaker 2: it can create headaches for pitching staffs, and I think
- 31:11Speaker 2: that that's why. It's not the primary reason, but it's
- 31:15Speaker 2: one of many examples as to why this offense has
- 31:18Speaker 2: been so consistent despite throughout times this year losing Brandon Lowe,
- 31:23Speaker 2: Ryan O'Hearn, Carter Griffin now Spencer Horowitz and O'Neil Cruz.
- 31:28Speaker 2: No other Pirates team since Josh was here would have
- 31:31Speaker 2: survived that type of injury lives. But they've always been.
- 31:35Speaker 1: Consistent, save you know, a bad week here or.
- 31:37Speaker 2: There, because they have guys who just click together and
- 31:41Speaker 2: Nick Gonzalez is a big part of that.
- 31:44Speaker 5: And what you just mentioned nooah, where these aren't the
- 31:47Speaker 5: type of hitters that a lot of teams in twenty
- 31:49Speaker 5: twenty six are going after. We see this with the
- 31:52Speaker 5: Marlins this year, where there's zigging where a lot of
- 31:55Speaker 5: people's egged you know, the moneyball approach, or yeah, the
- 31:59Speaker 5: Rays as well, where it's getting a lot of these
- 32:02Speaker 5: contact guys and pairing them together and just playing small ball,
- 32:06Speaker 5: and because that's where the value is right now for
- 32:09Speaker 5: small market clubs. Everyone's paying for slugging, all.
- 32:12Speaker 3: Right, that's value for baseball. Yes, put the ball in play.
- 32:18Speaker 4: He strake out a million times and hit thirty homers
- 32:21Speaker 4: and hit one ninety.
- 32:22Speaker 3: That's fine, that's fine. Keep striking out. You got guys.
- 32:26Speaker 3: As you said, it's a breath of fresh air. You know, hey,
- 32:30Speaker 3: this dude's putting the ball in play.
- 32:32Speaker 4: And one thing my brother used to tell us, modest
- 32:34Speaker 4: brother when he coached in high school.
- 32:35Speaker 3: He'd be like, there's no bad hops in the air.
- 32:38Speaker 3: Granted you hit a pop up, yes, it can be caught.
- 32:40Speaker 3: But it's like you put the ball in play.
- 32:41Speaker 4: Yep, it can be lost in the son. Somebody can trip,
- 32:44Speaker 4: they can throw the ball away. You got speed to
- 32:47Speaker 4: couple that. Now you're rushing people. You hit a ball
- 32:50Speaker 4: in the gap, that's a single. You might get a
- 32:52Speaker 4: hustle double, or you might get the fielder to boot
- 32:56Speaker 4: the ball because he's worried about you know things, dud.
- 32:59Speaker 4: Put the ball in play. It puts everybody on their
- 33:01Speaker 4: toes when you put the ball in play. So when
