- 0:53SPEAKER_01: Today we're going to talk a little bit about how we got into playing the game of Dungeons and Dragons.
- 0:58SPEAKER_01: Phil, uh, when did you start your relationship with DD?
- 1:01SPEAKER_01: Like the first time.
- 1:02SPEAKER_01: Like when did you start playing?
- 1:03SPEAKER_01: How did you get involved?
- 1:04SPEAKER_00: Yeah, good question.
- 1:06SPEAKER_00: So let's see.
- 1:07SPEAKER_00: I think officially I probably started playing.
- 1:12SPEAKER_00: Oh gosh.
- 1:13SPEAKER_00: Um it's probably been about six-ish years ago, six or seven years, right around then.
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: Um I was living in Salt Lake City.
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: Um kind of got interested.
- 1:28SPEAKER_00: Um, well, ultimately, I remember there's just this weird distinct memory that sticks out to me.
- 1:33SPEAKER_00: Like when I was a kid, my parents had Thanksgiving at their house, and I remember two of my cousins like playing this card game on a table, and lo and behold, you know, years later I learned that it was Magic the Gathering.
- 1:46SPEAKER_00: Um, kind of got into it while we were living in Salt Lake for a few years, and was a gateway almost into DD.
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: Um, one of our one of the guys that plays in our other campaign, Matt, he was living in Salt Lake City when I was as well, and we would go to this wing place.
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: Half of the building was this wing joint, and the other half of the building was a game store.
- 2:07SPEAKER_00: So we would get wings and then kind of go and like check out the game store too.
- 2:12SPEAKER_02: It's still an odd combination.
- 2:14SPEAKER_02: We every city needs one of those.
- 2:16SPEAKER_02: Yes, 100%.
- 2:17SPEAKER_00: Wings and games.
- 2:18SPEAKER_00: 100%.
- 2:19SPEAKER_00: Because you could be like you could go in the game store, start a game, take a bathroom break, head over to the other side and get a drink at the bar, and then head back in and keep playing.
- 2:28SPEAKER_00: So you could always do that because they shared a bathroom, like in the hallway.
- 2:32SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah, it was fantastic.
- 2:33SPEAKER_00: Oh my god, but that's how we got into it, right?
- 2:35SPEAKER_00: So, you know, we'd go for wings and like naturally spent time in the game store, and people were playing Magic, so we started doing that, and then people were um playing DD as well.
- 2:46SPEAKER_00: It's like, okay, well, like I have an interest in that.
- 2:48SPEAKER_00: And then some people at work kind of started to talk about it.
- 2:50SPEAKER_00: I'm like, oh, okay.
- 2:52SPEAKER_00: Like, you know, one of the guys at work was talking about a campaign that he was putting together.
- 2:56SPEAKER_00: I'm like, hey, if you know you're looking for people to play, I'm interested.
- 2:59SPEAKER_00: You know, I've never played before, but I would love to learn how to play.
- 3:03SPEAKER_00: And ultimately that's how I got into it.
- 3:05SPEAKER_00: One of the guys that I worked with is the one that ran the initial campaign.
- 3:09SPEAKER_01: Nice.
- 3:11SPEAKER_01: So uh just to back up just a little bit, do going to Magic the Gathering, so that's kind of what started the whole kicked off everything.
- 3:22SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 3:23SPEAKER_01: And when was that in relation to when you was that how far before you moved to Salt Lake City?
- 3:27SPEAKER_00: Oh man, if I think back to when that game was, I mean that remembering what house that occurred in, it would have been before I was even in high school, okay is when I remember seeing that.
- 3:36SPEAKER_00: Because my parents didn't really approve of anything like that when I was at that age.
- 3:41SPEAKER_00: Um, you know, they let us dabble in like a little bit of Yu-Gi-Oh when I was a kid.
- 3:46SPEAKER_00: Um, but I had no idea what I was watching.
- 3:49SPEAKER_00: And you know, I I have some magic cards now, and it's kind of funny to think about like if I would have been playing at that time, probably what those cards would be worth today.
- 3:58SPEAKER_00: Oh and I'm sure my cousins don't have their cards anymore, most likely.
- 4:02SPEAKER_00: Um, but it's just kind of funny to think about.
- 4:04SPEAKER_01: So so it's it's it's actually really funny you mentioned that because I I'll I'll get to my story later, like how I got involved in DD.
- 4:10SPEAKER_01: But in high school, I played Magic the Gathering as well.
- 4:13SPEAKER_01: And somewhere that box exists with you know the the legends, is it the Legends of Kamagawa?
- 4:19SPEAKER_01: And it's like there's all there were all kinds of packs, and I bought packs everywhere we went.
- 4:23SPEAKER_01: And okay, super nerdy fact.
- 4:26SPEAKER_01: I was on the debate team, but there were like three or four people on the debate team that would play magic, and so it's like they got me into it because it's like when you weren't in a debate session, we were playing magic, sure, and so that's how I got involved in it.
- 4:39SPEAKER_02: My god, you guys are nerds.
- 4:40SPEAKER_00: Quiz bull anyone, quiz bull.
- 4:42SPEAKER_01: I I did quiz bowl.
- 4:43SPEAKER_02: Damn right.
- 4:46SPEAKER_01: Join the club.
- 4:47SPEAKER_01: Nerdy is the new cool man.
- 4:48SPEAKER_01: That's right.
- 4:49SPEAKER_02: And I mean, like, we have obviously we we play DD now, we've accepted it, but yes.
- 4:55SPEAKER_01: So I I will say the one of the things that I think is really interesting.
- 4:59SPEAKER_01: Do you ever notice how like when you talk about playing DD now, how many closet DD players there are?
- 5:05SPEAKER_00: Oh, 100%.
- 5:06SPEAKER_01: And I have a perfect example of this.
- 5:08SPEAKER_01: So so I'm in like uh the leadership group here here in our town, right?
- 5:13SPEAKER_01: And we were we were at a meeting this last week and we were eating lunch, and the guy that was sitting next to me, who is a firefighter, I won't say anything more than that because I want to give him out.
- 5:22SPEAKER_01: But I was I would we were talking and I was like, Oh, I'm working on this podcast with my friends to talk about DD.
- 5:28SPEAKER_01: And he's like, Oh, you play DD.
- 5:30SPEAKER_01: I was like, Well, yes, I do.
- 5:31SPEAKER_01: Do you play DD?
- 5:32SPEAKER_01: And he's like, I recently got into it, and I'm like, I have found so many people that I'll just like be like, hey, I play DD, and I I'm I don't care if people think I'm nerdy, it's fine.
- 5:43SPEAKER_01: I accept that.
- 5:44SPEAKER_01: So I'll tell people I play all the time, and then they'll be like, Well, I play too.
- 5:47SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah, and I'll be like, I never would have expected that from you, but how many people I found blows my mind sometimes.
- 5:54SPEAKER_02: It's their dirty little secret.
- 5:56SPEAKER_01: Totally, it is.
- 5:57SPEAKER_00: I've had neighbors too, and I'm like, and I feel bad afterwards because I'm like, I never would have guessed that you played DD.
- 6:03SPEAKER_00: You know, it's like that reverse of like, you don't look like a nerd.
- 6:06SPEAKER_00: Like, what are you doing?
- 6:06SPEAKER_00: You play DD, but it's so much more mainstream, I feel like, than it used to be.
- 6:10SPEAKER_02: For sure.
- 6:11SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I mean COVID influenced that a little bit.
- 6:13SPEAKER_02: Well, and there's so much like mass media that is connected to DD now or like references DD.
- 6:20SPEAKER_02: I mean, you obviously get Stranger Things, you get um some of the big podcasts like Critical Role, that are really, really big, really popular.
- 6:29SPEAKER_02: People that maybe haven't even played though, are interested in DD, but haven't played but are interested in it, are knowledgeable of DD, or are interested in learning more and getting into the game.
- 6:40SPEAKER_00: It's almost become a part of pop culture enough that people are interested, even if they've never played, they want to know.
- 6:45SPEAKER_01: And it's one of those things is like if you if you like Harry Potter, if you like Lord of the Rings, you you found the pathway to get into this.
- 6:54SPEAKER_01: Like if you want to be part of that story, you've already set yourself down that path to probably play DD events.
- 7:01SPEAKER_02: Embrace the nerddom.
- 7:02SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 7:03SPEAKER_01: It's like that's that you're waiting to cross that threshold and find somebody.
- 7:06SPEAKER_01: Oh, like one of my buddies is a DM.
- 7:08SPEAKER_01: Now I'm gonna get involved.
- 7:09SPEAKER_01: It's like I want to try it.
- 7:11SPEAKER_00: We know what we gotta do, Ros, we gotta dig out that box and go through some of those cards and see how many of them point to monsters in the monsters manual.
- 7:19SPEAKER_00: We totally should do.
- 7:20SPEAKER_01: Question is I gotta find that box.
- 7:22SPEAKER_01: I know where my Yu-Gi-Oh cards are.
- 7:24SPEAKER_01: Magic?
- 7:25SPEAKER_01: Somewhere, but I'm not entirely sure where.
- 7:27SPEAKER_01: You guys are that that's that's homework before the next episode.
- 7:31SPEAKER_01: So Brett, Brett.
- 7:33SPEAKER_01: What's it?
- 7:33SPEAKER_00: We can just bring cards so when Brett's not here, we can play.
- 7:36SPEAKER_00: We can just play, yeah, because he shows up late all the time.
- 7:38SPEAKER_02: I'm not interested at all.
- 7:42SPEAKER_02: So I come from a small town that had no trading cards of any sort.
- 7:47SPEAKER_02: Like that was beyond nerdy.
- 7:50SPEAKER_02: Like, there was no trading cards of any sort.
- 7:52SPEAKER_02: So, like, we didn't have any of it.
- 7:54SPEAKER_02: So I ended up getting into DD like 2019, so pre-pandemic, a little ways before.
- 8:01SPEAKER_02: Uh, my uh what would you call them?
- 8:04SPEAKER_02: Gateway games, uh, would be something like we started playing pandemic and then pandemic legacy, Star Wars, and then uh I don't even know who.
- 8:15SPEAKER_02: Our friend, uh, one of our friends was like, Hey, I would really be interested in trying DD you.
- 8:21SPEAKER_02: Are you guys interested?
- 8:22SPEAKER_02: I have no idea what that's about.
- 8:25SPEAKER_02: But we've been playing all these other fun games.
- 8:27SPEAKER_02: Sure, let's keep it all in, let's switch it up.
- 8:28SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 8:29SPEAKER_02: Uh so uh Ross and I got into it kind of that same type of way.
- 8:33SPEAKER_02: We joined together in that uh first campaign.
- 8:37SPEAKER_02: Well, actually, you started before I did because uh uh just with some stuff going on.
- 8:42SPEAKER_02: I wasn't able to join that first one, uh, but we quickly got into it, and then uh I've been mostly a player since I've started dabbling in some DMing, but uh that's still fairly new for me.
- 8:54SPEAKER_01: So you probably don't remember this.
- 8:56SPEAKER_01: But but so our our stories do run very parallel to each other, thank you.
- 9:04SPEAKER_01: I was thinking tangential, and like that's not right.
- 9:06SPEAKER_01: Uh we've been using it.
- 9:07SPEAKER_01: That word's been thrown out there a lot tonight.
- 9:08SPEAKER_01: That's been in there a lot tonight.
- 9:10SPEAKER_01: Yes, absolutely.
- 9:11SPEAKER_01: Uh so I got started with the the Rick and Morty campaign, and and Brett's absolutely right.
- 9:16SPEAKER_01: That came from conversation we had with um some mutual friends.
- 9:21SPEAKER_01: Um and and we had played, I I think the Star Wars tabletop game was probably the one that catapulted us there because it was very much a here's your character, play your character, know how to play your character kind of thing.
- 9:33SPEAKER_01: Yes, it was very railroaded, uh, in the sense that there wasn't much leeway in the story, but it was still you play this character, here's the map, here's the situation kind of thing.
- 9:43SPEAKER_01: But that led to it was like the this Christmas 2019, right before the pandemic, where they had given me for Christmas the Rick and Morty dungeon, Dungeons and Dragons set, and it's basically just a dungeon, and they've created characters based off.
- 9:58SPEAKER_01: Oh, you had it?
- 9:58SPEAKER_01: Yes, it's right here.
- 10:00SPEAKER_01: Oh so we played that, and we had played through most of that um with my wife, his wife, and then at the end, do you remember you you I joined for one random?
- 10:12SPEAKER_01: You did the very last one, and I DMed that was my first experience DMing was that night, like reading quick through like the last two rooms and then running them.
- 10:22SPEAKER_01: Uh, and then we were like, Oh, this is really cool.
- 10:24SPEAKER_01: We want to get into this, and then the first campaign we picked was Curse of Straw.
- 10:29SPEAKER_01: Now, in retrospect, probably not the greatest idea because that is an extremely complex story, yeah.
- 10:35SPEAKER_01: Uh, for both first time DMs and first-time players, even though it's it's meant for you know first-level characters through like 12th level, but still it's almost a different style, it really is.
- 10:45SPEAKER_01: Yes, I mean it's not your typical meetup in a tavern and then go fight a dragon, yes.
- 10:50SPEAKER_01: And and the thing about like horror stories is like it's hard to set that tone.
- 10:55SPEAKER_01: And if you're a DM who hasn't done that before, it's hard to get into that.
- 10:58SPEAKER_01: And and even we had a DM switch partially through the campaign, and and regardless of who was running it, it was very hard to set that tone through that.
- 11:09SPEAKER_02: I will say for you getting that box set of Rick and Morty for Christmas or whatever it was, uh if it wasn't Rick and Morty, I don't know that we would have gotten into it.
- 11:22SPEAKER_02: If it was just a straight starter set of DD, I don't think we would have drawn it.
- 11:26SPEAKER_02: I don't think you would have had the same group of people jump into it.
- 11:28SPEAKER_02: No, if it wasn't Rick and Morty thing.
- 11:30SPEAKER_02: I think you're absolutely right.
- 11:31SPEAKER_02: There was a lot of those people that avid Rick and Morty followers or watchers uh that were interested in it because of Rick and Morty.
- 11:40SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 11:40SPEAKER_01: And there was no character building as part of that, right?
- 11:42SPEAKER_00: Sure, you just pick one of the pre-five characters.
- 11:44SPEAKER_00: Exactly.
- 11:45SPEAKER_01: So you so you know Rick was the DM, of course.
- 11:48SPEAKER_01: But it's like you could play as as as any of the other characters, essentially, and and they were various classes.
- 11:55SPEAKER_01: I'm trying to think of who was who was what.
- 11:57SPEAKER_01: I don't I don't really remember.
- 11:59SPEAKER_00: That's awesome.
- 12:00SPEAKER_00: I I know the first campaign that I jumped into, we it was a homebrew.
- 12:04SPEAKER_00: I'm very certain.
- 12:05SPEAKER_00: I don't recognize, I don't remember any of it being from a published work.
- 12:08SPEAKER_02: You went straight into a homebrew?
- 12:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 12:11SPEAKER_00: And I couldn't, I mean, I was so new to DD, right?
- 12:13SPEAKER_00: I couldn't tell you what kind of character I played.
- 12:16SPEAKER_00: I don't remember his name or what class or anything about it.
- 12:20SPEAKER_00: All I remember is there were a bunch of undead, and they killed us, and then suddenly, like later on in the campaign, we were facing our own characters.
- 12:31SPEAKER_02: Oh, wow.
- 12:32SPEAKER_00: Like that's what we met up with at some point.
- 12:34SPEAKER_00: So those are like the very small pieces that I remember.
- 12:38SPEAKER_00: And but yeah, it was very intense.
- 12:41SPEAKER_00: Um, but it was fun.
- 12:42SPEAKER_00: I mean, it kept me interested, and then I slowly like got into more and more published works and like listened.
- 12:48SPEAKER_00: That's when I started getting into more podcasts and listening to actual play podcasts.
- 12:53SPEAKER_00: Um, and that's when I truly like really got hooked.
- 12:56SPEAKER_00: Like, yeah, that yeah, I want to do this like for good, right?
- 12:59SPEAKER_00: I want to I want to learn to DM.
- 13:01SPEAKER_00: I want to be able to bring people into this, I want to teach people how to play this.
- 13:05SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 13:06SPEAKER_00: That's what did it for me.
- 13:07SPEAKER_01: And so so at some point through this this whole arc with Brett and I, we had started the Curse of Strahd, there was a DM switch in there, and then I think all of us had kids at some point and through that.
- 13:19SPEAKER_01: And Dane Killers and it and it derailed the entire thing.
- 13:23SPEAKER_01: But that that's kind of where our stories diverged because then I basically took a break and didn't play again until the three of us started playing together, but you started playing with Phil at one point because I would get I would get messages like you couldn't come play Fortnite or whatever we were playing because you were having a DND session.
- 13:39SPEAKER_01: I'm like, God damn it.
- 13:41SPEAKER_00: Yeah, we started playing um what campaign was uh the Giants Tower Storm King's Thunder?
- 13:48SPEAKER_00: Yeah, Storm King's Thunder.
- 13:50SPEAKER_00: Yeah, we started playing a Storm King's Thunder campaign with uh one of the guys that we well, two of the guys we play with now, uh Matt and Isaac, and then a couple couple other guys um from out in Baltimore when I was there.
- 14:01SPEAKER_00: But uh that one ended up kind of fizzling out schedule-wise, uh, which yeah, tends to happen.
- 14:06SPEAKER_00: But that's you know, that's what I appreciate about the group we have now is regardless of kind of the the curveballs that life has thrown, this group's been strong.
- 14:14SPEAKER_00: So we've been able to keep those.
- 14:16SPEAKER_01: I will say I think that's been the funnest part.
- 14:18SPEAKER_01: So so the three of us, plus Matt and Isaac, have been going through Descent into Avernus.
- 14:24SPEAKER_01: And it's like we we come from broken campaigns, right?
- 14:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah, they didn't make it all the way through.
- 14:30SPEAKER_01: And it's like it's like the people who really wanted to play, not that not that other people don't want to play, but it's like the ones who really wanted to keep going came together and it's made a really fun campaign.
- 14:41SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I agree.
- 14:44SPEAKER_02: Life is hard, yeah.
- 14:46SPEAKER_02: Scheduling is hard, yes.
- 14:49SPEAKER_01: And and I I think that's true of uh anybody that plays DD out there.
- 14:52SPEAKER_01: I mean, it's it's even harder if you try to get together because like I'm trying to run Curse of Strahd for you guys, plus some some like family of mine that I've gotten involved, and it's like schedules, scheduling sucks, and virtual tabletops have made that so much better, but it's still as hard to get together and find you know, still trying to deal with five, four, five, six people and get everybody in the same place all at once.
- 15:16SPEAKER_01: And that's not easy anymore.
- 15:17SPEAKER_00: It's not.
- 15:18SPEAKER_00: No, I agree with you.
- 15:20SPEAKER_01: So looking down the road here a little bit, um, one of the things that we're gonna get into, so now that we've talked about our background a little bit, um, we're gonna get into um talking about uh races and classes.
- 15:32SPEAKER_01: We talked about this a little bit in the first episode, but I think that's the first thing we're really gonna dive into.
- 15:37SPEAKER_01: I don't I we'll flesh out how how we want to do that, if whether that's gonna be every other episode, and we're gonna mix in some things in between, like how to build characters and things like that.
- 15:45SPEAKER_00: Um we gotta review the DD movie after we've seen it.
- 15:49SPEAKER_01: Oh, absolutely.
- 15:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but we gotta throw stuff like that in too.
- 15:51SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 15:52SPEAKER_02: As we're filming this, I'm reading the uh what is it even called?
- 15:56SPEAKER_02: Uh the official movie prequel comic.
- 16:00SPEAKER_02: What are your first thoughts?
- 16:02SPEAKER_02: It's interesting.
- 16:04SPEAKER_02: I'm trying like some of the pictures in the book are they don't necessarily look like the people in the movie.
- 16:10SPEAKER_00: Oh, who they cast for it.
- 16:12SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so it's trying to figure out okay, which person is which person.
- 16:14SPEAKER_02: Uh so I need to like look at some pictures and compare to make sure I know which one's which.
- 16:18SPEAKER_02: But so far, I'm excited.
- 16:20SPEAKER_02: I'm getting more excited about the movie.
- 16:22SPEAKER_01: Awesome.
- 16:23SPEAKER_01: Yes, I I think we'll probably have a bonus, not a bonus episode, but we'll have an extra episode once we see that movie and talk just about the movie.
- 16:30SPEAKER_01: I think one of the things that that's for me has been the most encouraging was the trailer with where they're talking to the dead guy.
- 16:37SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 16:37SPEAKER_01: Because that that's the kind of antics that would totally happen in a game session.
- 16:43SPEAKER_01: I think that's why I laugh so hard about that.
- 16:45SPEAKER_01: Because if you have a DM like Phil, who's on point, is like every time somebody asks a question, he he answers, and all of a sudden you missed your opportunity or something like that.
- 16:54SPEAKER_01: It's that kind of crap.
- 16:55SPEAKER_01: I say crap, but I I appreciate DMs like that.
- 16:58SPEAKER_01: Um that's just hilarious.
- 17:00SPEAKER_01: And I think that's what I want out of this movie most is to feel like DD, not just be D-esque.
- 17:09SPEAKER_00: I think in true form, uh, when we go see that, I think we need to go together, but we need to go to like a breovies or something where we can drink and watch the movie at the same time.
- 17:19SPEAKER_00: I feel like that's the only appropriate way to watch it.
- 17:23SPEAKER_02: Can we drink in our own mugs?
- 17:25SPEAKER_02: Like have a fan.
- 17:26SPEAKER_00: Sure, as long as we don't get caught.
- 17:30SPEAKER_01: We'll release this one after we've got it.
- 17:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I was gonna say now that we've said that on the show.
- 17:34SPEAKER_00: Everybody's got a flask, right?
- 17:36SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 17:37SPEAKER_01: Okay, so final thoughts about either the DD movie or um us getting involved in DD guys.
- 17:46SPEAKER_00: I don't think so.
- 17:47SPEAKER_00: I mean, it's fun for me to hear your guys' story and kind of see the the overlap and and just sort of how that differentiates, right?
- 17:54SPEAKER_00: Even though you guys kind of got involved in the same campaign to begin with, even seeing how your stories are different, just with what life's thrown at you.
- 18:01SPEAKER_00: It's always interesting to see how people kind of get into it and what they latch on to.
- 18:05SPEAKER_00: So it's fun.
- 18:06SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's interesting because we've only all three of us have only been into it for relatively a few years.
- 18:12SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 18:13SPEAKER_02: Uh so it's not like we've been doing this from the 80s.
- 18:15SPEAKER_02: We are not experts.
- 18:17SPEAKER_02: Uh, so feel free to let us know of any uh feedback of things we maybe got wrong or how you've seen uh DD play out in your experiences.
- 18:28SPEAKER_02: Let us know.
- 18:29SPEAKER_02: Uh we're still learning, we're trying to share what we've learned and um what we've picked up along the way.
- 18:34SPEAKER_02: We'd love to hear about your experiences as well.
- 18:36SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 18:37SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 18:38SPEAKER_01: We'll see everybody uh in uh a couple weeks on the next episode.
- 18:42SPEAKER_01: So for now, uh, we'll see you later.
