Latest / The Gregg Bell Show / 10-14: Short week for Seahawks, Kraken win and Parker Gabriel of the Denver Post
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Now, from the Star Reynolds Sports Desk, your 93.3 KJR
- 0:04Speaker 1: FM Sports Headlines.
- 0:06Speaker 2: Good morning. Happy Wednesday. Thanks for joining us on KJR.
- 0:09Speaker 2: Headlines are brought to you by Frostbrood Corzine. It is
- 0:11Speaker 2: cold as the Rockies. The Seahawks continue to cram a
- 0:15Speaker 2: week's worth of preparation into three days. Really two and
- 0:17Speaker 2: a half because they're leaving this afternoon after practice to
- 0:21Speaker 2: play the Broncos in Denver tomorrow night. Zach Charbonnet not
- 0:24Speaker 2: expected to play. Coach Mike McDonald says the full injury
- 0:27Speaker 2: report will be out at 1 o'clock. Our time or so,
- 0:30Speaker 2: Seahawks will announce it, or Mike McDonald will, whenever after that.
- 0:35Speaker 2: Not expecting much beyond. Jackson Smith and Jigba has been
- 0:37Speaker 2: on the injured list for the practice as limited, but
- 0:39Speaker 2: they haven't practiced. Those are estimations. They have not been
- 0:42Speaker 2: on the field practicing. They've been walking in sneakers and T-shirts.
- 0:45Speaker 3: Well, that's what you do on a short week, usually, right?
- 0:47Speaker 2: Yeah, and I've said it before. There are guys who
- 0:50Speaker 2: are not even able to walk correctly yet who are
- 0:53Speaker 2: going to have to play tomorrow night. That's what the
- 0:55Speaker 2: NFL gives us for Thursday night football. The Houston trash
- 0:58Speaker 2: cans owner announced today that Joe Espada is not going
- 1:01Speaker 2: to return as Houston manager. That was becoming obvious. So
- 1:04Speaker 2: they weren't fooled by the trash cans winning the AL
- 1:06Speaker 2: West with a 500 record. This news comes one day
- 1:10Speaker 2: after the news that the Mariners had asked Houston for
- 1:12Speaker 2: permission to speak to Espada to replace, potentially replace, Dan
- 1:16Speaker 2: Wilson as Seattle's manager. Espada's contract with Houston ends this month.
- 1:21Speaker 2: Mariners second baseman Cole Young named the American League Goal
- 1:23Speaker 2: Goal finalist. I think back in April we already named
- 1:26Speaker 2: him the MVP of the Mariners this season. He was.
- 1:29Speaker 2: He absolutely was. Phillies are keeping Don Mattingly as their
- 1:33Speaker 2: manager for 2027. He was the interim manager into the
- 1:35Speaker 2: playoffs this year. So it can take him off the
- 1:38Speaker 2: list of a Mariners potential manager. The Kraken are now 5-2,
- 1:42Speaker 2: 3-0 on their five-game road trip. They led 2-0 after
- 1:45Speaker 2: two periods at Philadelphia last night. They allowed the Phillies
- 1:47Speaker 2: Flyers to tie them. They played a five-minute scoreless overtime.
- 1:51Speaker 2: Then this happened to end the penalty shootout.
- 1:53Speaker 4: Here's McMahon.
- 1:54Speaker 2: Here's McMahon. Left-handed shot. Scored his third of the season
- 1:59Speaker 2: earlier in the game. McMahon, left side. He's got speed.
- 2:02Speaker 2: Back to the middle. Shoots. Scores! Bobby McMahon, the winner!
- 2:09Speaker 2: On his stick.
- 2:11Speaker 5: And the Seattle Kraken survive and advance out of Philadelphia.
- 2:17Speaker 2: It's a 3-2 win in the shootout. Well, why not?
- 2:20Speaker 6: Why not the guy that's the shooter on this team?
- 2:23Speaker 6: Why not the guy that got the scoring started tonight?
- 2:25Speaker 6: He gets the scoring ended here with the shootout winner.
- 2:29Speaker 2: Kraken win, 3-2. Everett Fitzhugh, Al Kaninsky on the call
- 2:32Speaker 2: right here on your home of the Kraken. 93.3 KJRFM
- 2:33Speaker 2: last night. Not pictured or spoken to in that clip.
- 2:40Speaker 2: Philip Grubauer. Man, was he on it in overtime and
- 2:43Speaker 2: in the shootout. Was he our number one goaltender? I'm
- 2:46Speaker 2: going to talk to Ian about this. Between the end
- 2:50Speaker 2: of last season and the start of this season, Grubauer
- 2:52Speaker 2: has been really good.
- 2:53Speaker 3: As soon as he got healthy, yes.
- 2:54Speaker 2: I know Joey Decord starts openers and kind of has
- 2:57Speaker 2: the billing as the one, but Grubauer, he ain't going anywhere.
- 3:00Speaker 2: Next up for the crack in tomorrow night, Tampa. That's
- 3:03Speaker 2: right here on 93.3 KJR. So here comes the hard
- 3:05Speaker 2: part of the trip now. Tampa Bay and Florida back-to-back
- 3:08Speaker 2: to end it. Washington Huskies play at Purdue Friday right
- 3:11Speaker 2: here on KJR. It's like we have sports on here
- 3:13Speaker 2: or something. The Huskies are likely to be without quarterback
- 3:17Speaker 2: DeMond Williams, a rib injury for the guy they gave
- 3:20Speaker 2: $ 4 million in NIL money to for this year and
- 3:22Speaker 2: has lost three straight Big Ten starts. Number two, Elijah
- 3:25Speaker 2: Brown is on track to start for the Huskies Friday
- 3:27Speaker 2: at Purdue, 5 p.m. right here on 93.3 KJR FM.
- 3:30Speaker 2: That 5 p.m. means probably the Husky honks start at what, 1, 2,
- 3:32Speaker 2: something like that? Pre-game show? I should know that.
- 3:36Speaker 3: The pre-game show is four hours ahead of time.
- 3:37Speaker 2: 1 p.m. Lunchtime, Husky honks, Husky tailgate pre-game show.
- 3:42Speaker 3: And they do a fabulous job, even though they wear purple.
- 3:45Speaker 2: Man, that's very generous of you to say, Ms.
- 3:47Speaker 4: Coogs.
- 3:48Speaker 2: They are really good. Speaking of Jessamyn's Cougs, Washington State,
- 3:53Speaker 2: 1-5 on the season, play Saturday at Oregon State with
- 3:56Speaker 2: a new quarterback, a freshman, redshirt freshman. I'm going to
- 3:58Speaker 2: ask you in a second when the headlines are done
- 3:59Speaker 2: why it's not somebody else. Major League Baseball playoffs, the
- 4:03Speaker 2: Rays even their American League Championship Series at a game
- 4:05Speaker 2: apiece by beating the Guardians last night 3-1 in St. Petersburg.
- 4:09Speaker 2: On to Cleveland for Game 3 tomorrow afternoon. The Brewers
- 4:11Speaker 2: and Dodgers resume the National League Championship Series this evening
- 4:15Speaker 2: at Dodger Stadium in L.A., Milwaukee, surprisingly, up two games
- 4:18Speaker 2: to none. Now on with the Wednesday show. Greg Bell,
- 4:20Speaker 2: Justin McIntyre with you on 93.3 KJR FM. Seahawks are
- 4:24Speaker 2: a little later this afternoon, so in the studio today.
- 4:28Speaker 2: One day before I fly to Denver for Seahawks, Broncos
- 4:31Speaker 2: coming in tomorrow for KJR. I'm going to put my
- 4:34Speaker 2: stories that you used to see at the News Tribune
- 4:37Speaker 2: before they just closed.
- 4:38Speaker 3: We got content, folks.
- 4:40Speaker 2: We're going to put my game stories, my videos up
- 4:43Speaker 2: on our KJR website, 933kjr.
- 4:44Speaker 7: Com.
- 4:46Speaker 2: We're going to make it a Seahawks news destination for you,
- 4:49Speaker 2: give you another reason to go to the website. Beside talkbacks,
- 4:53Speaker 2: beside giveaways, beside our contest, beside fact or fiction, you're
- 4:58Speaker 2: going to get Seahawks content front and center, videos, my
- 5:01Speaker 2: game stories from Denver tomorrow night when the Seahawks play
- 5:04Speaker 2: the Broncos in Thursday night football. I'm happy and proud
- 5:06Speaker 2: to do that, my debut for the website. We're going
- 5:09Speaker 2: to boost that thing up a little bit.
- 5:10Speaker 8: Yes, we will.
- 5:11Speaker 2: Check that out. Jessamyn and I with you from 10 a.m.
- 5:14Speaker 2: to noon before Ian Furness will join us. I think
- 5:16Speaker 2: Ian's up for like an hour today or so. Or
- 5:18Speaker 2: has he got a couple hours?
- 5:19Speaker 3: Oh, no, no, no.
- 5:20Speaker 9: Tomorrow. Yes.
- 5:21Speaker 3: Today is a regular day for us.
- 5:23Speaker 2: Tomorrow will be.
- 5:24Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 5:24Speaker 9: Cracking our on in a different time zone tomorrow.
- 5:28Speaker 1: So, yes.
- 5:28Speaker 2: On the East Coast. That's right.
- 5:29Speaker 9: But today is a full regular day.
- 5:31Speaker 3: You get all of Ian and all of Softie.
- 5:33Speaker 2: Dave Softie Muller and Dick Fane at 3 until 7.
- 5:36Speaker 2: We'll have Factor Fiction at 1135, your chance to win
- 5:40Speaker 2: $ 1, 000 from the Lucky Eagle Casino and Hotel. What I
- 5:44Speaker 2: was going to ask you before you go down the
- 5:46Speaker 2: show today, my son asked me last night. He's a coug,
- 5:49Speaker 2: of course. Just graduated a couple years ago.
- 5:51Speaker 3: Go Cougs.
- 5:51Speaker 2: What about that Pitt guy, Julian Duggar? He's still on
- 5:55Speaker 2: the roster.
- 5:56Speaker 4: He is.
- 5:56Speaker 3: I see him on the sideline every single week.
- 5:58Speaker 2: So why is the redshirt freshman who just got there?
- 6:01Speaker 9: I think, and this is just me not being a coach,
- 6:05Speaker 9: and my overview of it is that they have specific
- 6:08Speaker 9: things that they like from Julian Duggar. And I have
- 6:11Speaker 9: wanted to see what he can do on the field,
- 6:13Speaker 9: but they design specific packages for him in certain down situations.
- 6:18Speaker 3: So I think that they don't.
- 6:21Speaker 9: View him as much as they do Eshelman as someone
- 6:26Speaker 9: who should be dropping back and passing the ball. That
- 6:30Speaker 9: is my assessment. I, unfortunately, because I live over here,
- 6:34Speaker 9: I'm not at practices. And even if I was, there's
- 6:37Speaker 9: certain limited things I could say if I did see things.
- 6:41Speaker 9: But I think that they recruited Eshelman for a reason.
- 6:45Speaker 9: And they're both young. They were both very young. And
- 6:48Speaker 9: so which one do you put in? Well, you also
- 6:51Speaker 9: give Eshelman a weapon in potential packages you could put
- 6:56Speaker 9: in for Duggar in this situation because that is how
- 6:59Speaker 9: they have used him very sparingly. But that is how
- 7:02Speaker 9: they have used him. They have not used him as
- 7:04Speaker 9: their quarterback.
- 7:05Speaker 2: A special package of plays for him. But the way
- 7:08Speaker 2: college football is now, they probably need to come up
- 7:10Speaker 2: with more plays for Duggar to keep him. He's from
- 7:12Speaker 2: Pittsburgh and he's in Pullman, Washington. He's from Ben Hills
- 7:15Speaker 2: High School in Pittsburgh. I'm with you on that.
- 7:17Speaker 3: They're both young, and they have availability.
- 7:20Speaker 2: Owen Eshelman is from Norman, Oklahoma, home of the Oklahoma Sooners.
- 7:24Speaker 2: He's in Pullman, too. But the way it is now
- 7:26Speaker 2: for college football, you have to re-recruit the guys you
- 7:29Speaker 2: just got on your team to keep them on the roster. Exactly.
- 7:32Speaker 2: And so we'll see what Duggar does for the Cougs
- 7:34Speaker 2: now that they're switching quarterbacks. Not to Duggar, the redshirt
- 7:38Speaker 2: sophomore we've had for a couple years from transfer from Pitt.
- 7:41Speaker 2: It's Owen Eshelman who's going to start instead of Caden Pinnock.
- 7:44Speaker 2: At the Beavs on Saturday.
- 7:46Speaker 9: But yeah, just that's what I mean is that, you know, hey,
- 7:50Speaker 9: let's not put this guy into pressure because Eshelman doesn't
- 7:53Speaker 9: necessarily have the skills that Julian Duggar does in those
- 7:56Speaker 9: package situations.
- 7:57Speaker 3: So it actually provides a weapon.
- 7:59Speaker 2: So you're expecting to see them both on Saturday?
- 8:01Speaker 9: Not in the quarterback position. I think we're going to
- 8:04Speaker 9: see majority Eshelman.
- 8:06Speaker 4: Okay.
- 8:06Speaker 9: But I do know that Julian is available for those plays.
- 8:10Speaker 9: Like we saw, even though it was only one play,
- 8:13Speaker 9: it was successful at Utah State.
- 8:15Speaker 2: Elijah Brown is the No. 2 quarterback for Washington. It
- 8:18Speaker 2: sounds like he's going to start at Purdue on Friday
- 8:20Speaker 2: night because of the rib injury to DeMond Williams. And
- 8:24Speaker 2: we heard from Hugh Millen, former Husky quarterback, on how
- 8:26Speaker 2: maybe even without the injury, Elijah Brown should be starting.
- 8:29Speaker 2: 28 of 39, 250 yards, three touchdowns at The second half,
- 8:35Speaker 2: a second half plus, he played a little more than
- 8:36Speaker 2: half the game after DeMond Williams went out with the
- 8:38Speaker 2: rib injury against Iowa after the Hawkeyes were just boat
- 8:41Speaker 2: racing the Huskies up and down Husky Stadium Friday night.
- 8:45Speaker 2: At least after Brown came in, it was somewhat respectable
- 8:48Speaker 2: after that. They ended up losing healthily anyway. But now
- 8:51Speaker 2: they go to Purdue, trying to avoid a fourth consecutive
- 8:54Speaker 2: Big Ten loss. That's on Friday here on KJR. On
- 8:57Speaker 2: the show today, the Seahawks. Sam Darnold went up to
- 9:02Speaker 2: Brian Fleury, the offensive coordinator, after the Seahawks lost to
- 9:04Speaker 2: the 49ers last weekend, and the quarterback told the offensive
- 9:09Speaker 2: coordinator what he would like to do for this week
- 9:12Speaker 2: in the plays he would like to run in Denver.
- 9:14Speaker 2: He has a request to the offensive coordinator. We're going
- 9:17Speaker 2: to talk about what that request was, why he said it,
- 9:20Speaker 2: what Brian Fleury's reaction to it, and we'll see if
- 9:22Speaker 2: that changes tomorrow night's results on offense. Darnold, five interceptions
- 9:26Speaker 2: the last three games. What did he ask his OC?
- 9:28Speaker 2: We'll talk about that. You'll hear from the quarterback. You'll
- 9:31Speaker 2: hear from Brian Fleury as well. We'll talk about the
- 9:33Speaker 2: Kraken and where this start is in franchise history after
- 9:36Speaker 2: seven games. You'll like what you hear about that. 11 o'clock,
- 9:39Speaker 2: we'll go to Denver. We're going to talk to Parker Gabriel,
- 9:41Speaker 2: a friend of mine, Broncos beat writer for the Denver Post.
- 9:45Speaker 2: He's going to tell us about Denver's side of tomorrow
- 9:47Speaker 2: night's Seahawks game. What's up with Bo Nix and the offense?
- 9:50Speaker 2: I was at a Denver radio station yesterday, and that's
- 9:53Speaker 2: all they were talking about was Bo Nix and the
- 9:55Speaker 2: offense and short passes and under 60% completion rate. He's
- 9:59Speaker 2: averaging like... five yards an attempt. It's the lowest in
- 10:03Speaker 2: the league. Chuck Powell and I were talking about that
- 10:05Speaker 2: at 7 o'clock this morning. A lot of the same
- 10:08Speaker 2: problems in Denver that there are in Seattle. A running
- 10:10Speaker 2: game that's not working, running backs that no one's heard of,
- 10:13Speaker 2: and not supporting the quarterback. And the quarterback suffering because
- 10:17Speaker 2: of it. 11.30, we'll read back your text on the
- 10:20Speaker 2: 49451 Tacoma Dodge text line. Of course, to talk back,
- 10:24Speaker 2: go to the iHeartRadio app, where you can also listen
- 10:26Speaker 2: to the show for free, live every day, 933KJR. And
- 10:30Speaker 2: on our website, 933KJR. com, at the top of those pages
- 10:33Speaker 2: is a red microphone button. You press that button, you
- 10:35Speaker 2: can leave a 30-second or shorter voicemail message, and Jessamyn
- 10:38Speaker 2: McIntyre will play that back in its entirety. No matter
- 10:41Speaker 2: what you say. You sing in the shower, she puts
- 10:43Speaker 2: it on. Hey, hold on.
- 10:43Speaker 9: There's not a no matter what you say clause in this.
- 10:47Speaker 2: Please be. Well, it was in taste.
- 10:49Speaker 4: Yes. Yes.
- 10:50Speaker 2: I mean, content wise, but it was in taste.
- 10:53Speaker 4: Yes.
- 10:54Speaker 9: Yes. Yes.
- 10:55Speaker 2: It's a low bar is my point.
- 10:57Speaker 9: Hey. Okay.
- 10:57Speaker 2: Because you love the voices.
- 10:58Speaker 9: I love the voices and I love the creativity people
- 11:01Speaker 9: come up with.
- 11:01Speaker 2: Singing.
- 11:02Speaker 3: I like the impressions.
- 11:03Speaker 9: I like the songs they come up with because they
- 11:05Speaker 9: get very creative.
- 11:06Speaker 4: So creative.
- 11:07Speaker 3: And also, just your straight-up opinions as a fan. I
- 11:11Speaker 3: love those, too.
- 11:11Speaker 2: She does edit them. I just chide her. She does
- 11:14Speaker 2: listen to them before we put them. We have FCC
- 11:16Speaker 2: rules around here.
- 11:17Speaker 9: There are plenty I haven't aired, okay? Make it appropriate.
- 11:23Speaker 4: 11.35 again.
- 11:23Speaker 2: Factor Fiction. Your chance to win $ 1, 000 from the Lucky
- 11:26Speaker 2: Eagle Casino Hotel. Your latest chance to do that. We
- 11:29Speaker 2: do that every day. 7.35, 11.35, 2.35, and 3.35 p.m.
- 11:30Speaker 2: Then Ian will join us at the end of the
- 11:36Speaker 2: second hour to tell us what he's got on his
- 11:38Speaker 2: show today. The first text for the 49451. How concerned
- 11:44Speaker 2: are you about Sam Darnold, your Super Bowl quarterback, with
- 11:46Speaker 2: five interceptions the last three games since he's come back
- 11:49Speaker 2: from that glute injury? He has the highest interception percentage
- 11:54Speaker 2: in the NFL. What's that mean? That means the percentage
- 11:56Speaker 2: of his throws that have been intercepted is the highest
- 11:59Speaker 2: in the league right now.
- 12:00Speaker 4: Mm-hmm.
- 12:01Speaker 2: Of course, he's thrown fewer than a lot of the
- 12:02Speaker 2: quarterbacks because he didn't start one game and missed most
- 12:04Speaker 2: of the opener after a glute injury on the fifth
- 12:06Speaker 2: play of the season. Conversely, Drew Locke has one of
- 12:10Speaker 2: the highest and best interception rates, and he has not
- 12:14Speaker 2: thrown one. Zero percent in the two games he played,
- 12:18Speaker 2: and he was brilliant. Let's just say it. He was really,
- 12:21Speaker 2: really good in those two games. which is why there
- 12:24Speaker 2: are some people on the text line yesterday saying, let's
- 12:27Speaker 2: bench the Super Bowl winning quarterback eight months after he
- 12:30Speaker 2: won the big game and put in Drew Locke. The
- 12:32Speaker 2: way it's going right now, that's not going to happen.
- 12:35Speaker 2: That is not going to happen tomorrow. Sam Darnold will
- 12:37Speaker 2: be the starting quarterback. What concerns you about Sam Darnold
- 12:40Speaker 2: at this point? We posited yesterday that he is suffering
- 12:43Speaker 2: by this anonymous who's behind door number three running back
- 12:48Speaker 2: situation they have. Man, is that, I mean, when you
- 12:52Speaker 2: think about it, When they made that– okay, let's even
- 12:55Speaker 2: go back before they made the decision. When Kenneth Walker
- 12:58Speaker 2: was running wild in front of you and me in
- 13:01Speaker 2: Santa Clara in February, and in that night, if you had–
- 13:05Speaker 2: we talked, you and I both went up to Walker
- 13:07Speaker 2: after the game. I knew Walker wasn't coming back. He
- 13:09Speaker 2: told me that throughout the season. He told me that
- 13:11Speaker 2: four days– basically he told me that four days before
- 13:13Speaker 2: the game. But when we're sitting in that– and if
- 13:16Speaker 2: I told you, okay, by week five of the Seahawks'
- 13:20Speaker 2: coming season, in eight months, Jessamyn, We're going to have
- 13:23Speaker 2: Emmanuel Wilson, Robert Henry Jr., George Helani, and Velas Jones Jr.
- 13:30Speaker 2: are going to be our running back options in Seattle.
- 13:33Speaker 2: You would have probably said there's a problem there.
- 13:37Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 13:38Speaker 2: You would have said, who's Emmanuel Wilson? Like I would have.
- 13:41Speaker 2: You would have said, who is Robert Henry Jr.? George
- 13:43Speaker 2: Helani is a special teams player who comes in on
- 13:46Speaker 2: third down sometimes to pass block. And Velas Jones Jr.
- 13:49Speaker 2: has not played. He's been on the practice squad. That's
- 13:51Speaker 2: what you would say because that would have been a
- 13:52Speaker 2: fact eight months ago. Yet those are the guys that
- 13:55Speaker 2: are the now pillar of what is supposed to be
- 13:58Speaker 2: the foundation of this offense, the running game.
- 14:00Speaker 3: This is definitely a hindsight situation.
- 14:02Speaker 9: You know, we're not expecting the injury to Darian Price. Right.
- 14:06Speaker 3: And then we're still waiting on Zach Charbonnet.
- 14:09Speaker 2: Right.
- 14:09Speaker 4: Right.
- 14:10Speaker 2: But there was not an expectation in February that Zach
- 14:12Speaker 2: Charbonnet would be playing by the 1st of October. Not
- 14:15Speaker 2: in my mind. No way. Eight months from reconstructive knee surgery.
- 14:20Speaker 2: And they put a lot. Let's face it. They put
- 14:22Speaker 2: a lot on Jadarian Price. That went big stock on him.
- 14:26Speaker 2: They said, OK, we're going to let Walker walk to
- 14:29Speaker 2: Kansas City. We're not going to pay him 14. That
- 14:32Speaker 2: was a philosophical decision. 14 million a year. We talked
- 14:34Speaker 2: about that. And I don't disagree with that at all.
- 14:36Speaker 2: given the history of running backs and injuries and the
- 14:39Speaker 2: cost-weighing analysis of that, the risk-reward of giving someone $ 14
- 14:43Speaker 2: million at an injury-prone position in the sport with the
- 14:46Speaker 2: shortest career span. Sure, that's an organizational philosophy. Get it.
- 14:51Speaker 2: But they put every egg into the Judarian price basket,
- 14:54Speaker 2: at least until Charbonnet comes back. And again, that's assuming
- 14:58Speaker 2: Charbonnet is just plug-and-play when he gets back on the
- 15:01Speaker 2: field full go. And that's not a fait accompli. You
- 15:03Speaker 2: can't assume that someone– in less than nine months after
- 15:08Speaker 2: reconstructing his knee at a running back position where you
- 15:11Speaker 2: cut every play, is just going to walk right in
- 15:13Speaker 2: and start and 12 rushing touchdowns again as last year, right?
- 15:18Speaker 2: This was a dice roll by John Schneider and Mike
- 15:20Speaker 2: McDonald at running back. For cost purposes, long-term, yes. Short-term,
- 15:26Speaker 2: it was a dice roll. And so far, it's come
- 15:28Speaker 2: up craps on the Seahawks' offense. And my view of
- 15:33Speaker 2: this is it has had an effect and a negative
- 15:36Speaker 2: one on Sam Donald in the entire team. This team
- 15:39Speaker 2: at his best, which we saw over the last three
- 15:42Speaker 2: months of last season, when it runs the ball, They flourish.
- 15:46Speaker 2: That's when play action works. That's when Darnold has time.
- 15:49Speaker 2: That's when Smith and Jigba can run the longer routes.
- 15:51Speaker 2: That's when defenses have to play them honestly. Right now,
- 15:54Speaker 2: I don't care what the numbers say. They had that
- 15:56Speaker 2: outlier game against Arizona when they ran for 160 yards
- 16:00Speaker 2: and 91 from Wilson, and Price played half that game
- 16:02Speaker 2: or three-fourths of that game before his rib injury. Throw
- 16:05Speaker 2: that out. The Cardinals stink. The defense, San Francisco's defense,
- 16:10Speaker 2: Denver tomorrow night, they're not respecting Seattle's run game. Those
- 16:15Speaker 2: guys that are rushing the edges and trying to come
- 16:17Speaker 2: after and succeeding and pressuring Darnold, they're not honoring the run,
- 16:22Speaker 2: especially on longer third downs that Seattle has because their
- 16:24Speaker 2: running game is not consistent enough to make it shorter
- 16:27Speaker 2: third downs. Chuck always teases me about my run and
- 16:31Speaker 2: stop the run philosophy. Every time he asks me what
- 16:33Speaker 2: a key to a game is before the game, I
- 16:35Speaker 2: always say run and stop the run. But it's the
- 16:37Speaker 2: trickle-down effect of the run game in the NFL. I
- 16:40Speaker 2: know the NFL is a passing league. I know that
- 16:42Speaker 2: Jackson Smith and Jig was the reigning offensive player of
- 16:44Speaker 2: the year.
- 16:44Speaker 3: Defensive championships.
- 16:46Speaker 4: Yes.
- 16:47Speaker 2: Stopping the run and running the ball controls everything. It
- 16:50Speaker 2: controls down and distance and controls field position. It makes
- 16:53Speaker 2: it third and three instead of third and nine.
- 16:55Speaker 3: And time of possession.
- 16:56Speaker 2: Time of possession. Rest your defense. Where's down and offense.
- 17:02Speaker 2: I've said this before. Even if the Seahawks don't score
- 17:04Speaker 2: on drives, if they have a running game that gets
- 17:06Speaker 2: them to midfield, then Michael Dixon pins them inside the
- 17:09Speaker 2: 10-yard line, and the Seahawks play defensive football like they
- 17:12Speaker 2: did Week 18 in San Francisco, like they did in
- 17:15Speaker 2: Super Bowl 60. They kick from midfield, and they say,
- 17:18Speaker 2: go ahead, offense. Try to move 95 yards on us
- 17:21Speaker 2: for a touchdown. It's not going to happen. But if
- 17:24Speaker 2: you don't have a running game and you're punting from
- 17:26Speaker 2: the 30, it's a whole different deal. And that is
- 17:30Speaker 2: what the value of this running game is to the
- 17:32Speaker 2: Seahawks offense. Field position, playing defensive position, field position football.
- 17:37Speaker 2: When you hear the word complementary football, they say that
- 17:39Speaker 2: all the time and it drives me nuts because it's
- 17:41Speaker 2: such a vague old term. It doesn't really tell you anything.
- 17:44Speaker 2: What they mean is that the offense puts the defense
- 17:47Speaker 2: in a position to win the game and the defense
- 17:49Speaker 2: puts the offense in a position to win the game.
- 17:51Speaker 2: And the anti-complementary football, putting the defense in a position
- 17:54Speaker 2: to lose the game, is turning the ball over. The
- 17:57Speaker 2: turnovers are coming from the lack of a consistent running
- 18:00Speaker 2: game and from the running backs dropping the ball. That's
- 18:03Speaker 2: the offensive. That's the Seahawks problem in a nutshell. Now,
- 18:06Speaker 2: it's not a debilitating problem because if they don't drop
- 18:09Speaker 2: the ball, they're going to win the game. We've talked
- 18:12Speaker 2: about this.
- 18:12Speaker 3: Also that, yeah.
- 18:13Speaker 2: If they don't turn the ball over with this defense,
- 18:15Speaker 2: they're going to win. Let me just stay off the top.
- 18:18Speaker 2: If they don't turn the ball over tomorrow, they beat Denver.
- 18:20Speaker 2: And then if they don't turn the ball over, they
- 18:22Speaker 2: beat the Chiefs. I know they're undefeated. They'll beat them.
- 18:24Speaker 2: And the Bears are coming after it. If they don't
- 18:26Speaker 2: turn the ball, they'll beat the Bears too. When they
- 18:29Speaker 2: don't turn the ball, find me a game in the
- 18:31Speaker 2: last three years.
- 18:32Speaker 3: What was the.
- 18:34Speaker 2: Stat you had? 21-1? 21-1 when they either turn it
- 18:38Speaker 2: over one or zero times under Mike McDonald. 21-1. Them's
- 18:42Speaker 2: the facts. They're 9-10 when they turn it over two
- 18:45Speaker 2: or more times in a game. And I know it's
- 18:50Speaker 2: a simplistic thing to say, well, turnovers decide football games.
- 18:52Speaker 2: But for this team, because of the defense, how good
- 18:54Speaker 2: it is, that's how important that statistic is. So when
- 18:58Speaker 2: you hear things like Darnold saying, like you'll hear him
- 19:00Speaker 2: here in the next segment talk about taking care of
- 19:02Speaker 2: the ball, he knows if I don't turn the ball over,
- 19:04Speaker 2: we're going to win because of the way our defense
- 19:07Speaker 2: is playing. 49451 on the Tacoma Dodge text line. You're
- 19:10Speaker 2: part of the show with that. Well, what concerns you
- 19:13Speaker 2: about Sam Darnold? I just laid out for you my
- 19:15Speaker 2: theory of what's going on. We're going to talk to
- 19:17Speaker 2: Farhan Lalji at 11 o'clock. Excuse me. We're going to
- 19:21Speaker 2: talk to Parker Gabriel. We're going to talk to Farhan
- 19:23Speaker 2: today to tape him for tomorrow at 11 o'clock. Parker
- 19:25Speaker 2: Gabriel in Denver. We're going to talk about some similar
- 19:28Speaker 2: problems with Denver's offense and Bo Nix. That's going to
- 19:32Speaker 2: be at 11 o'clock today at 1135. Factor Fiction. Your
- 19:34Speaker 2: chance to win $ 1, 000 from the Lucky Eagle Casino and Hotel.
- 19:38Speaker 2: We'll talk Kraken again today. We'll talk more about the
- 19:42Speaker 2: Huskies playing on another Friday night for the second night
- 19:45Speaker 2: in a row. Stealing the high school... Sports showcase thunder
- 19:49Speaker 2: from the kids that are playing. Friday night. Two really
- 19:51Speaker 2: big games in western Washington in high school football this week.
- 19:55Speaker 2: Eastside Catholic and O'Day. That's probably the biggest.
- 19:59Speaker 4: Yep.
- 19:59Speaker 2: Puyallup and Sumner down in the South Sound. Two big games.
- 20:03Speaker 2: We're going to have Eastside and O'Day's coaches on our
- 20:08Speaker 2: show on Friday night. Monty Kohler is, of course, the
- 20:10Speaker 2: Hall of Famer, the winningest coach in high school football
- 20:13Speaker 2: history in Washington. It's a little harder to get him
- 20:16Speaker 2: on the phone. We're trying to get him on the
- 20:18Speaker 2: phone on Friday. That's what we're going to be trying
- 20:21Speaker 2: to do for Friday.
- 20:21Speaker 3: I'll just tell him his opponent's doing it.
- 20:24Speaker 4: Yes.
- 20:24Speaker 3: That usually works.
- 20:25Speaker 2: I could do that. I've worked a lot of Coach
- 20:28Speaker 2: Kohler's games, and I could do that.
- 20:30Speaker 4: You're right.
- 20:30Speaker 2: That could be a motivator because we do have Eastside
- 20:33Speaker 2: Catholic already booked for Friday. Up next. You'll hear from
- 20:37Speaker 2: Sam Darnold on what he told Brian Fleury after the
- 20:39Speaker 2: Seahawks game against the 49ers on what he would request
- 20:43Speaker 2: the play caller do. And you'll hear the play caller's
- 20:44Speaker 2: reaction to that on 93.3 KJRFM. Welcome back. Greg Bell
- 21:18Speaker 2: and Justin McIntyre with you on 93.3 KJR FM as
- 21:22Speaker 2: we are every day, 10 a.m. to noon.
- 21:25Speaker 4: At 11 a.m.
- 21:25Speaker 2: Today, we're going to talk to Parker Gabriel, the Denver
- 21:28Speaker 2: Post Broncos beat writer, about what's going on in Denver
- 21:30Speaker 2: with their offense. Bo Nix, an under 60% passer, throwing
- 21:35Speaker 2: the shortest passes in the league. Fewest yards per attempt,
- 21:39Speaker 2: just over five. And their defense, by the way, has
- 21:43Speaker 2: given up 145 yards per game rushing. Something else I
- 21:47Speaker 2: noticed about the Broncos, they fumbled the ball ten times
- 21:50Speaker 2: in four games. Five games. Ten! They've only lost three,
- 21:53Speaker 2: but they're dropping the ball. They're putting it on the ground,
- 21:56Speaker 2: and you know the Seahawks know that's that. You know
- 21:58Speaker 2: Mike McDonald and the defense know that that's going on.
- 22:01Speaker 3: If anyone knows it, it's definitely McDonald's.
- 22:05Speaker 2: On the Seahawks offense, Sam Darnold and his play caller
- 22:10Speaker 2: say the goal for the Seahawks in their pass game
- 22:13Speaker 2: Thursday in Denver is to be more decisive. What's that
- 22:15Speaker 2: look like? For Darnold, that means throwing the ball more
- 22:18Speaker 2: quickly after the snap. Since his return from injury in
- 22:21Speaker 2: week three, that glute injury, when he started at Washington,
- 22:24Speaker 2: Darnold's average time before throwing is 3.25 seconds. That's the
- 22:28Speaker 2: longest in the NFL among qualifying quarterbacks who started more
- 22:32Speaker 2: than a couple games.
- 22:33Speaker 3: Shout out O-line.
- 22:34Speaker 2: His average time to throw last season, 2.86 seconds. He's
- 22:38Speaker 2: gone from 21st in the league in time to throw,
- 22:40Speaker 2: meaning getting it out among the top 12 in the league,
- 22:44Speaker 2: the quickest 12 throwers in the league, to the worst
- 22:47Speaker 2: one in terms of holding onto the ball. Number one,
- 22:50Speaker 2: he's the longest time to throw in the league since
- 22:52Speaker 2: he came back from that injury. Darnold knows this. He
- 22:55Speaker 2: talked about this yesterday.
- 22:57Speaker 11: Yeah, I think, you know, first of all, I gotta
- 22:59Speaker 11: do a better job of, you know, getting the ball out,
- 23:02Speaker 11: moving on in progression, stuff like that, so.
- 23:04Speaker 2: you know, um, there's that.
- 23:06Speaker 11: And then obviously there's a lot of other factors that
- 23:08Speaker 11: go into it. But for me, like, I'm just, I'm
- 23:10Speaker 11: worried about myself and how I can, you know, continue
- 23:13Speaker 11: to be as decisive as I can be on the field.
- 23:16Speaker 9: Sam, Hoop said that one of your best qualities is
- 23:19Speaker 9: your ability to have a short-term memory.
- 23:20Speaker 12: And kind of just move on.
- 23:22Speaker 13: Has that something, is that something you've always had or
- 23:24Speaker 13: do you.
- 23:24Speaker 4: Develop in some way?
- 23:26Speaker 2: Um, it's not something I always had.
- 23:28Speaker 11: Um, I think just some of the experiences that I've
- 23:30Speaker 11: had in my life being in the NFL, college, high school,
- 23:33Speaker 11: like you know, just things maybe not going a certain
- 23:37Speaker 11: way and just learning over time that there's a lot
- 23:39Speaker 11: of things that are out of my control. So just
- 23:41Speaker 11: having that short-term memory and knowing that you can't change
- 23:44Speaker 11: anything in the past is always a good reminder as well.
- 23:48Speaker 14: The turnovers have been kind of team-wide as well. Is
- 23:51Speaker 14: there any worry at all that it becomes something that
- 23:53Speaker 14: you guys think about or, you know, they kind of
- 23:54Speaker 14: come in bunches kind of thing and it's hard to.
- 23:57Speaker 11: No, yeah, I think for us it's... There's a sense
- 24:02Speaker 11: of urgency. I think that term... you know that phrase
- 24:05Speaker 11: like sense of urgency it's been thrown around a lot
- 24:07Speaker 11: the last couple days and it's true you know there
- 24:09Speaker 11: needs to be a sense of urgency to get better
- 24:10Speaker 11: and have ball security um for me personally like i'm
- 24:13Speaker 11: just i'm going to continue to try to be as
- 24:15Speaker 11: decisive as i can be and and go through my
- 24:18Speaker 11: reads and trust what i see trust my feet all
- 24:20Speaker 11: those things um but yeah can't have turnovers um you
- 24:25Speaker 11: know it's you got to protect the football in this
- 24:26Speaker 11: league and um if you don't you'll pay.
- 24:29Speaker 15: What's Brian's demeanor been like this week, and what's the
- 24:32Speaker 15: gist of his message to you guys offensively?
- 24:34Speaker 2: Yeah, he's been great. You know, he's been the same.
- 24:38Speaker 11: Nothing's changed. You know, for us, it's just, again, it's
- 24:42Speaker 11: just about turning the page and understanding that we have
- 24:44Speaker 11: a really good defense we're going up against Thursday night
- 24:48Speaker 11: and getting as prepared as we can be to face them.
- 24:52Speaker 14: Wanting to turn that page, how much does the short
- 24:54Speaker 14: week maybe help.
- 24:55Speaker 4: In that way?
- 24:56Speaker 2: Do you just want to get back out there? Yeah,
- 24:58Speaker 2: no doubt. no doubt.
- 24:59Speaker 11: I think it definitely helps, you know, getting to play
- 25:01Speaker 11: a game on Thursday is always fun. So in front
- 25:04Speaker 11: of everybody too, um, there's nothing like it. So we'll
- 25:07Speaker 11: be ready to.
- 25:09Speaker 4: Go.
- 25:10Speaker 14: Part of, uh, you know, getting early down success is
- 25:12Speaker 14: a little bit more success in the run game. Uh,
- 25:14Speaker 14: are you seeing, you know, potential there for things to
- 25:17Speaker 14: start getting a little more productive?
- 25:19Speaker 11: Yeah, I think it's, I mean, it all kind of
- 25:21Speaker 11: works hand in hand, right? Like For me, on first
- 25:25Speaker 11: and second on pass game, I got to get the
- 25:26Speaker 11: ball out. When I get the ball out, then all
- 25:29Speaker 11: of a sudden defenders are thinking about what pass plays
- 25:31Speaker 11: might be coming up and then all of a sudden
- 25:33Speaker 11: we're running the football. The run game, the pass game,
- 25:37Speaker 11: it complements each other. I think if we just all
- 25:40Speaker 11: continue to detail everything out and for me, just continue
- 25:45Speaker 11: to make quick decisions and feel really good about them
- 25:49Speaker 11: and trust my feet and all those things, we'll continue
- 25:53Speaker 11: to to see, you know, ourselves grow in the pass
- 25:57Speaker 11: game and the run game. Yeah, yeah, there's a great
- 26:07Speaker 11: balance to it, right? It's the old, you know, John Woodenism,
- 26:11Speaker 11: be quick but don't hurry kind of thing. So, yeah, it's,
- 26:15Speaker 11: you know, understanding when something might not be there, still
- 26:18Speaker 11: give it a chance because it's in the progression, but
- 26:20Speaker 11: understanding when you might move on. And I think if
- 26:22Speaker 11: I just continue to or if I do a better
- 26:25Speaker 11: job of that moving forward, I'll like where I'm going
- 26:29Speaker 11: to be head forward.
- 26:31Speaker 14: You guys are seeing more cover zero this year than
- 26:34Speaker 14: you did last year. It's a chance for some explosives
- 26:37Speaker 14: as well. If you control the turnovers, do you see
- 26:41Speaker 14: some potential for explosives to come out of it as well?
- 26:44Speaker 11: Yeah, I think any time you control the turnovers, everything
- 26:48Speaker 11: else gets better. That's really the thing we're focused on
- 26:53Speaker 11: is Just taking care of the football. And I think
- 26:56Speaker 11: that's the main thing that we're focused on. But at
- 26:59Speaker 11: the same time, you know, we're just going to continue
- 27:01Speaker 11: to play fast as well.
- 27:03Speaker 2: Sam, what stands out about Denver's defense specifically?
- 27:06Speaker 11: Yeah, I think, first of all, they got really good players.
- 27:09Speaker 11: And they got a really good coaching staff over there, Vance.
- 27:12Speaker 11: Vance and that coaching staff do a really good job of,
- 27:15Speaker 11: you know, making sure that they all, you know, They
- 27:19Speaker 11: do a lot of things in the back end. They
- 27:20Speaker 11: do a lot of pressures, a lot of different coverages,
- 27:22Speaker 11: but they're all on the same page. I would assume
- 27:25Speaker 11: they make it very simple.
- 27:26Speaker 2: For the players.
- 27:27Speaker 11: It's a great scheme, and I know we're very excited
- 27:32Speaker 11: to be able to go up.
- 27:33Speaker 2: Against that defense.
- 27:34Speaker 11: Again, like I said, just really good players all around
- 27:40Speaker 11: with a really good scheme, and all the players are
- 27:42Speaker 11: smart players that make it come to life.
- 27:44Speaker 14: When you have a couple weeks of donut go exactly
- 27:46Speaker 14: what you want, where do you start?
- 27:48Speaker 2: Do you go back to mechanics?
- 27:49Speaker 4: Do you go to film?
- 27:50Speaker 14: Do you go, like, where do you start to kind
- 27:52Speaker 14: of get back to center?
- 27:54Speaker 11: Yeah, I think, I think for me, it's, you know,
- 27:57Speaker 11: it's easy to overthink things, you know, when you start,
- 28:02Speaker 11: when you're not having as much success as you'd like,
- 28:05Speaker 11: so I think for me, it's just continuing to do
- 28:07Speaker 11: what I do, and, you know, continue to trust the process, like,
- 28:10Speaker 11: I'm not You know, I'm not doing anything different in
- 28:12Speaker 11: the week that I did, you know, last year, the
- 28:14Speaker 11: weeks prior. So just continue to do my process. Obviously,
- 28:17Speaker 11: a short week makes it a little bit different. But
- 28:20Speaker 11: just trust the process and understand that, you know, there's
- 28:24Speaker 11: things that I got to do differently on the field, right?
- 28:27Speaker 11: And understand what those mistakes are and not make them again.
- 28:31Speaker 11: And I think it's that simple.
- 28:33Speaker 2: Is trusting the.
- 28:33Speaker 14: Process easier now because of the success you have had
- 28:36Speaker 14: the last couple years?
- 28:37Speaker 11: Yeah, I feel like I've just found a good rhythm
- 28:39Speaker 11: within my process, to your point. But again, I feel
- 28:44Speaker 11: like I've always said this, but going and finding that
- 28:47Speaker 11: process was always a challenge. And now that I've found it,
- 28:50Speaker 11: it's just continuing to trust that and what we do
- 28:54Speaker 11: throughout the week to get ready.
- 28:58Speaker 2: Super Bowl champion quarterback Sam Donald yesterday talking about the
- 29:01Speaker 2: fact that he has five interceptions today. in the three
- 29:04Speaker 2: games since he returned from injury. Two of them on
- 29:07Speaker 2: his first drives of the game against the Chargers in
- 29:10Speaker 2: his very first throw and in the first third down
- 29:12Speaker 2: against San Francisco last weekend. Both into coverage, both short
- 29:16Speaker 2: and outside. He's saying he's got to come off his
- 29:19Speaker 2: reads quicker, be more decisive. So how is Brian Fleury
- 29:23Speaker 2: going to help him? He's the new play caller, first-year
- 29:25Speaker 2: play caller for the Seahawks, offense coordinator who was a
- 29:28Speaker 2: tight ends coach for the 49ers. First year in the job.
- 29:31Speaker 2: He's still learning Darnold, too. Darnold did not play in
- 29:33Speaker 2: the preseason. Of course, he did practice with Fleury calling
- 29:37Speaker 2: his plays every day in training camp, but still. Fleury
- 29:41Speaker 2: is still learning Darnold, too. And Fleury had this to
- 29:43Speaker 2: say about Sam Darnold in the offense yesterday.
- 29:46Speaker 4: Here we go.
- 29:46Speaker 14: I heard from Sam about being more decisive. Mike McDonald
- 29:49Speaker 14: talked about being more decisive. That's a word, but how
- 29:52Speaker 14: do you actually get the quarterback to be able to
- 29:54Speaker 14: do that?
- 29:55Speaker 16: Yeah, I mean, it's something that he identified right away
- 29:58Speaker 16: coming off the field that we were able to talk
- 29:59Speaker 16: about over the last 48 hours, and it's relying more
- 30:02Speaker 16: heavily on plays that we have a lot of experience with,
- 30:05Speaker 16: both through training camp and through the first couple weeks,
- 30:07Speaker 16: that he's comfortable making swift decisions and progressing through, so
- 30:11Speaker 16: we're going to lean more in that direction.
- 30:15Speaker 2: Is that easier to do? It's a short week anyway?
- 30:16Speaker 16: Yeah, it would be the formula anyway, going into a
- 30:19Speaker 16: short week a lot of times, but just definitely given...
- 30:22Speaker 16: You know, the feedback that he gave to me and
- 30:23Speaker 16: kind of the direction we're going right now, it just
- 30:26Speaker 16: makes sense.
- 30:26Speaker 14: What is that balance for any quarterback to make quick
- 30:29Speaker 14: decisions yet be patient in terms of?
- 30:34Speaker 16: Yeah, you want to play the play, you know, not
- 30:36Speaker 16: assume that something is going to happen based on the
- 30:38Speaker 16: information you're gathering pre-snap. There's an element of that to
- 30:41Speaker 16: any good football player, but you actually do have to
- 30:44Speaker 16: play things in sequence as they occur in real time.
- 30:46Speaker 16: And so you can anticipate all you want, but just
- 30:49Speaker 16: be decisive, but, you know, play it the way it's
- 30:52Speaker 16: meant to be played.
- 30:53Speaker 2: Third down numbers haven't been read like the last few weeks.
- 30:56Speaker 14: How much of that is the execution on third down
- 30:58Speaker 14: versus what's happening first and second down?
- 31:00Speaker 16: That's a combination of both. I mean, obviously we can
- 31:02Speaker 16: help ourselves by being in a little bit more manageable situations.
- 31:05Speaker 16: We can, you know, avoid some of the negatives by
- 31:07Speaker 16: penalties and, you know, we've taken a few sacks or
- 31:10Speaker 16: given up a few sacks in some inconvenient situations. So,
- 31:14Speaker 16: that would help us significantly if we were in more
- 31:16Speaker 16: manageable third downs, and then we can just do a
- 31:18Speaker 16: better job at every level of executing when we are
- 31:20Speaker 16: in those bad situations.
- 31:21Speaker 15: What was your view of the first interception on Sunday,
- 31:24Speaker 15: and do you think maybe that highlights the challenge of
- 31:26Speaker 15: playing decisively but also.
- 31:29Speaker 2: Not?
- 31:29Speaker 16: Yeah, we had built the route to go out there,
- 31:32Speaker 16: and Renardo did a great job playing it, so ideally
- 31:34Speaker 16: you can see the leverage he's taking and the fact
- 31:36Speaker 16: that he's squatting at that distance and progressed down to
- 31:38Speaker 16: one of the checkdowns and just keep the chains moving.
- 31:41Speaker 16: He was trying to be aggressive to get the first
- 31:42Speaker 16: down in that situation. The check down might not have
- 31:44Speaker 16: moved the chains, and he has a sense of urgency
- 31:46Speaker 16: to be better on third down as well.
- 31:47Speaker 2: So I understand the throw for sure.
- 31:49Speaker 16: But playing it a little bit safer is something we've
- 31:53Speaker 16: been talking about.
- 31:54Speaker 9: When the run game is struggling, what kinds of things
- 31:56Speaker 9: can you do to help the offense just work a
- 31:58Speaker 9: little bit better, work more efficiently?
- 32:01Speaker 16: It's just kind of leaning on things that we have
- 32:04Speaker 16: a lot of experience in. If the run game is struggling,
- 32:06Speaker 16: there's a lot of different reasons that might be happening.
- 32:08Speaker 16: It could be because of a different front that we
- 32:11Speaker 16: weren't expecting to see.
- 32:11Speaker 2: It could be a lot of pressure or movement.
- 32:13Speaker 16: So it's really kind of identifying what the issues are
- 32:15Speaker 16: within the game and then trying to get to stuff
- 32:17Speaker 16: that we feel confident is a better answer than what
- 32:19Speaker 16: we had maybe planned ahead of time.
- 32:21Speaker 15: In a week where it sounds like you're not really
- 32:23Speaker 15: practicing anything close to like a normal practice, how do
- 32:26Speaker 15: you really work on the ball security stuff?
- 32:28Speaker 16: Yeah, I mean, just be mindful about it. You're obviously
- 32:31Speaker 16: not going to be able to work through it in
- 32:32Speaker 16: a walkthrough setting, but it's just having the mindset that
- 32:34Speaker 16: we're going to protect the football at all costs and
- 32:37Speaker 16: at the expense of maybe not avoiding a tackle or
- 32:40Speaker 16: breaking a tackle or being able to run through contact
- 32:42Speaker 16: the way you want to. And, you know, it's just
- 32:43Speaker 16: something that you have to continue to emphasize until it
- 32:45Speaker 16: gets time.
- 32:48Speaker 2: That's Brian Fleury, the new first year, I should say,
- 32:51Speaker 2: not quite new anymore. We're in October, week five, week six.
- 32:55Speaker 2: Offensive coordinator, Brian Fleury. Interesting to me, Jessamyn, that he said,
- 33:01Speaker 2: we're going to go back to the place from training
- 33:03Speaker 2: camp that Sam Darnold really likes and is comfortable with.
- 33:06Speaker 9: Well, I like that, that he's convinced you know, conversing
- 33:10Speaker 9: with the quarterback and what he likes.
- 33:12Speaker 3: I like that.
- 33:13Speaker 2: Not the plays that they're designing for the Broncos defense
- 33:16Speaker 2: and how Denver plays the plays that Darnold likes from
- 33:19Speaker 2: back in July and August. That's what they're going to see.
- 33:22Speaker 2: If you believe what they say, that's what they're going
- 33:24Speaker 2: to see tomorrow. Now there's a competitive advantage to saying
- 33:27Speaker 2: that as well, because now Sean Payton and his defensive staff,
- 33:31Speaker 2: they hear this. They have people who watch these press conferences.
- 33:35Speaker 2: What's that mean? Are we going to see plays we
- 33:36Speaker 2: haven't seen on film yet? Maybe. And the Seahawks would
- 33:40Speaker 2: love the Denver Broncos staff to think that's what they're
- 33:42Speaker 2: going to do.
- 33:43Speaker 9: I mean, we've used the word chess match so many times,
- 33:48Speaker 9: but it is constant.
- 33:49Speaker 2: It is constant, and it's in so many different subtle ways,
- 33:52Speaker 2: including this. But it's interesting that Darnold went up to
- 33:56Speaker 2: Fleury after the 49ers game and said, let's go back
- 33:58Speaker 2: to the plays that I really like from training camp.
- 34:02Speaker 2: Let's go back to those. And Fleury says, that's what
- 34:04Speaker 2: we're focused on this week. So we'll see tomorrow night
- 34:07Speaker 2: what those plays are. I suspect the first third down
- 34:10Speaker 2: will be the favorite third down play that Darnold ran
- 34:12Speaker 2: in August. I suspect that the first scripted dozen plays
- 34:16Speaker 2: or so, they keep it very close to the vest
- 34:17Speaker 2: on how many of those plays they script. But the
- 34:20Speaker 2: beginning of the game, first 15 plays or so, Bill
- 34:24Speaker 2: Walsh style, probably going to be some of the favorite
- 34:26Speaker 2: plays we saw in training camp in Renton. Regardless of
- 34:30Speaker 2: the opponent, not what Denver's defense plays, but what Darnold
- 34:33Speaker 2: likes to do best. And let's see if that makes
- 34:35Speaker 2: him more decisive when he's throwing the ball tomorrow. Sure
- 34:38Speaker 2: would help if he had a running game and somebody
- 34:41Speaker 2: who can run the ball consistently without dropping it. 49451,
- 34:45Speaker 2: your reaction to hearing the quarterback in the play caller
- 34:47Speaker 2: saying they're going to get simpler, they're going to go
- 34:48Speaker 2: back to the way you like the most, and that
- 34:49Speaker 2: Darnold's trying to be more decisive. Up next, your Kraken
- 34:54Speaker 2: are off to a historic start for seven games in franchise.
- 34:58Speaker 2: I know the franchise history is only six years.
- 35:01Speaker 3: That's still a thing.
- 35:02Speaker 2: It is still a thing.
- 35:03Speaker 3: It's still a thing.
- 35:04Speaker 2: And man, did I like some Philip Grubauer last night.
- 35:06Speaker 2: Not just for his saves, not just for his glove.
- 35:10Speaker 2: He's got some feist in him. He was showing it
- 35:12Speaker 2: last night to the Flyers. It was fun. We're going
- 35:14Speaker 2: to talk a little bit of hockey because we've got
- 35:16Speaker 2: a team here at home with a Kraken on KGR
- 35:18Speaker 2: that's Doing quite well, thank you, to begin their sixth season.
- 35:22Speaker 2: Cracking next, Parker Gabriel from Denver. The Denver Post beat
- 35:25Speaker 2: writer of the Broncos. We'll talk about the Denver side
- 35:27Speaker 2: of the Seahawks-Broncos matchup tomorrow night. 1135 Factor Fiction. Your
- 35:31Speaker 2: chance to win $ 1, 000 from the Lucky Eagle Casino and Hotel.
- 35:35Speaker 2: All that's coming up before Ian Furness joins us and
- 35:37Speaker 2: tells us what he's got going on on 93.3 KJRFM.
- 35:50Speaker 2: Here's McMahon. Left-handed shot. Scored his third of the season earlier.
- 35:56Speaker 4: In the game.
- 35:56Speaker 2: McMahon, left side. He's got speed. Back to the middle. Shoots. Scores!
- 36:03Speaker 2: Bobby McMahon, the winner! On his stick.
- 36:08Speaker 5: And the Seattle Kraken survive and advance out of Philadelphia.
- 36:14Speaker 2: It's a 3-2 win in the shootout. Well, why not?
- 36:17Speaker 6: Why not the guy that's the shooter on this team?
- 36:19Speaker 6: Why not the guy that got the scoring started tonight?
- 36:22Speaker 6: He gets the scoring ended here with the shootout winner.
- 36:25Speaker 6: Kraken win, 3-2.
- 36:29Speaker 2: That was Everett Fitzhugh and Al Kaninsky from Philadelphia last
- 36:33Speaker 2: night from South Philly. And the Kraken beating the winless
- 36:38Speaker 2: Philadelphia Flyers. I love saying winless Philadelphia Flyers growing up
- 36:41Speaker 2: as a Pittsburgh Penguins guy right outside Pittsburgh. They hated Flyers.
- 36:46Speaker 2: 2-0 lead early last night. Flyers fought back to tie
- 36:49Speaker 2: it at 2. They went to overtime. Scoreless overtime thanks
- 36:53Speaker 2: to a couple of really nice plays saved by Philip Grubauer.
- 36:56Speaker 2: And then in the shootout, Grubauer looked like he knew
- 36:59Speaker 2: exactly what the Flyers were going to do before the
- 37:02Speaker 2: winner right there that you heard from McMahon and Now
- 37:05Speaker 2: they go to Florida for the tough end of this
- 37:07Speaker 2: five-game road trip. They're 3-0 on it, the Kraken are.
- 37:10Speaker 2: They play now at Tampa Bay tomorrow, never a picnic.
- 37:14Speaker 2: One of the best teams in the NHL. And then
- 37:17Speaker 2: the Stanley Cup champions from a couple years ago, Florida
- 37:19Speaker 2: Panthers and their whole system and their lockdown defense and
- 37:23Speaker 2: the neutral zone and all of that. That's their back-to-back
- 37:26Speaker 2: task for the Kraken before they come home now. Tampa Bay, Florida, back-to-back.
- 37:33Speaker 2: I heard Chuck actually ask Hal Koninsky on my drive-in today,
- 37:35Speaker 2: could they dare go 5-0 on this road trip and
- 37:38Speaker 2: beat both Tampa Bay and Florida? They're 5-2 after seven games.
- 37:45Speaker 2: That's the best start in franchise history after seven games.
- 37:49Speaker 2: Last year, through nine games, there were five wins, two losses,
- 37:52Speaker 2: and two overtime games with two overtime points. That was
- 37:56Speaker 2: their best start through nine games. Through seven games, five
- 38:00Speaker 2: and two, And that's the best start in the six
- 38:03Speaker 2: seasons of Kraken hockey through seven games. And so a
- 38:07Speaker 2: little bit of, well, the Calgary Flames, which you keep
- 38:09Speaker 2: playing the Flames. Well, that's not entirely true. But it's
- 38:11Speaker 2: true that Philadelphia is not one of the greatest teams
- 38:14Speaker 2: in the league. Detroit on the road was a big win.
- 38:17Speaker 2: And Washington, the Capitals, you win on road ice against
- 38:21Speaker 2: the Capitals while Ovechkin scores. That's something, too. Then last night,
- 38:26Speaker 2: it was really cool. Billy Otovinan, 24-year-old defenseman, scores from
- 38:32Speaker 2: the high slot. His first goal, I don't know if
- 38:35Speaker 2: you were watching the game, Jessamyn, those of you listening,
- 38:37Speaker 2: I don't know if you were watching the game, but
- 38:39Speaker 2: on the Kraken TV side, they showed the trainer behind
- 38:43Speaker 2: the bench. Did you see that? When Otovinan scored, they
- 38:46Speaker 2: took the puck, and he put athletic tape around the
- 38:49Speaker 2: side of the puck, and he was writing in a
- 38:51Speaker 2: Sharpie the goal, the date, the time, and all of
- 38:54Speaker 2: that for Otovinan to keep. Do you know who helped
- 38:58Speaker 2: create that goal? Matty Beneers. Matty Beneers was in front
- 39:02Speaker 2: of the net like he was some 225, 30-pound guy.
- 39:06Speaker 2: He's only 180. I know he's 6'2, but he's only
- 39:10Speaker 2: 180 pounds, and he doesn't hit you as a big
- 39:11Speaker 2: enforcer-type throw-your-body-around guy. He set the screen in front of
- 39:16Speaker 2: Ladarda that allowed the goal. The goaltender couldn't see it,
- 39:21Speaker 2: and Odovinan scored the second goal for the Kraken. Beneers
- 39:25Speaker 2: last night. Last night was the first game I really
- 39:27Speaker 2: watched the Kraken play because I've been so busy with
- 39:30Speaker 2: the Seahawks and other things that have gone on in
- 39:33Speaker 2: my sports writing career the last week or so. But
- 39:37Speaker 2: last night watching the game, it struck me, and I'm
- 39:39Speaker 2: going to ask... Mike Benton and Ian Furness this, but
- 39:42Speaker 2: Beneers was four-checking the hell out of the Flyers. I mean,
- 39:46Speaker 2: just all over the place. I know he only has
- 39:49Speaker 2: three points through seven games, and he's not been the
- 39:52Speaker 2: scorer that the Kraken may have hoped when they drafted
- 39:55Speaker 2: him and made him the youngest face of the franchise,
- 39:57Speaker 2: but I don't know that I... When I watched the
- 40:00Speaker 2: Kraken last year, I don't know that I saw Beneers
- 40:02Speaker 2: as aggressive in the four-check and standing in front of
- 40:04Speaker 2: goaltenders and screening them like he was last night. I mean,
- 40:07Speaker 2: he looked like a pill, like this big... hulking dude
- 40:11Speaker 2: last night the way he was playing. I was really
- 40:13Speaker 2: impressed watching the forechecking by Matty Beneers, and I'm interested
- 40:16Speaker 2: to hear from those who watch the Kraken all the
- 40:18Speaker 2: time if that's something new or it's an emphasis for
- 40:21Speaker 2: the Kraken. What else is an emphasis is to be
- 40:23Speaker 2: a little more tough, just to be feisty. We've heard
- 40:27Speaker 2: Lane Lambert talk about them to be more competitive in
- 40:29Speaker 2: just plain feistiness. And how about Philip Grubauer last night?
- 40:36Speaker 2: That was fun.
- 40:37Speaker 3: I am a big fan of Gruby, man. I really am.
- 40:40Speaker 3: And I know that they are.
- 40:42Speaker 9: In a wealth of riches when it comes to the
- 40:44Speaker 9: goalie situation. But Gruby coming back last year and then
- 40:47Speaker 9: doing what he's doing right now.
- 40:50Speaker 3: I love to see it.
- 40:51Speaker 2: Zegers last night was trying to get him under Grubauer's
- 40:54Speaker 2: skin from the start of the mat. I mean, it was...
- 40:57Speaker 2: From the drop he was trying to get after him.
- 40:59Speaker 2: And you saw in the second period when Zegers takes
- 41:04Speaker 2: a shot. He curls up in the right circle. He
- 41:07Speaker 2: takes a shot that Grubauer saves and Grubauer, instead of
- 41:10Speaker 2: just dropping the pucker, handing it to the linesman, he
- 41:13Speaker 2: tossed it to Zegers because they'd been going at it
- 41:15Speaker 2: for a period and a half by that point. And
- 41:17Speaker 2: then Zegers shot it back into Grubauer and Grubauer cross-checked
- 41:21Speaker 2: Zegers right under the chin. It was great.
- 41:24Speaker 9: Reminds me of Remember the Titans, to be honest, that, oh, oh,
- 41:28Speaker 9: that's a bad man when they put in sunshine at
- 41:31Speaker 9: quarterback and he goes, let him through. And then he
- 41:33Speaker 9: gives that evil stare. Yeah, that's what groovy reminds me
- 41:37Speaker 9: of in that situation.
- 41:39Speaker 2: That was my favorite play of last night. My favorite
- 41:41Speaker 2: action of last night. And it was after the whistle.
- 41:43Speaker 2: Grubauer and Zegers got unsportsmanlike minors for it.
- 41:46Speaker 4: So what?
- 41:47Speaker 2: It's like offsetting penalties in football.
- 41:49Speaker 4: Big deal.
- 41:50Speaker 2: You've set your message. Don't mess with me. Don't mess
- 41:53Speaker 2: with me. And to the Kraken's credit, it wasn't just
- 41:56Speaker 2: Grubauer going after Zegers. About three guys did after Zegers.
- 42:00Speaker 2: Grubauer cross-checked him. That was great. That's something that Lane
- 42:05Speaker 2: Lambert has talked about this team needing more of, and
- 42:07Speaker 2: we saw it last night in Philadelphia, Broad Street bullies
- 42:11Speaker 2: and all that. I know they're not the Bobby Clark
- 42:13Speaker 2: 1970s Flyers, but that was great to see. I'd add
- 42:17Speaker 2: 49451 to you Kraken fans out there if you watched
- 42:20Speaker 2: the game last night. I like Grubauer. He's a number
- 42:25Speaker 2: one goaltender to me. I know Joey Decord, younger, probably
- 42:28Speaker 2: the future, definitely the future. There's been talk about trading Grubauer. Grubauer,
- 42:34Speaker 2: between the end of last season and now, has really,
- 42:36Speaker 2: really turned it on. And I don't know. It's tough
- 42:40Speaker 2: to say he isn't worthy of being a number one goaltender.
- 42:43Speaker 2: I just loved what he did. That crosscheck made me.
- 42:45Speaker 2: That was great. It was like football on ice. I
- 42:48Speaker 2: really appreciated that.
- 42:49Speaker 9: Yeah, I know. It's kind of good because I think
- 42:52Speaker 9: we've been wanting a little bit more of that physicality
- 42:55Speaker 9: on the ice and a little bit more of that attitude.
- 42:57Speaker 3: But when you got it coming from the goaltender.
- 42:59Speaker 9: Right.
- 43:00Speaker 3: That was awesome. That is great.
- 43:03Speaker 2: Football on ice. Now let's go to football on grass.
- 43:05Speaker 2: Back to Denver where the Seahawks are going to be tomorrow.
- 43:08Speaker 2: I'm going to fly there tomorrow morning for KJR. We're
- 43:11Speaker 2: going to talk to Parker Gabriel, the Denver Post beat
- 43:13Speaker 2: writer on the Broncos and what their struggles have been.
- 43:16Speaker 2: They're 3-2-2. A little urgency from both teams tomorrow night
- 43:19Speaker 2: on this matchup. Parker Gabriel and the Broncos from Denver next.
- 43:24Speaker 2: And then at 11.35, your chance to win $ 1, 000 from
- 43:26Speaker 2: Lucky Eagle Casino and Hotel in our Fact or Fiction
- 43:29Speaker 2: latest installment coming up on 93.3 KJRFM.
- 43:40Speaker 1: Now, from the Star-Reynolds Sports Desk, your 93.3 KJRFM Sports Headlines.
- 43:47Speaker 2: Good morning. Thanks for joining us on a Wednesday. Headlines
- 43:49Speaker 2: are brought to you by Frostbrook. Coors Light is cold
- 43:51Speaker 2: as the Rockies, where the Seahawks are headed to tomorrow. Actually, today,
- 43:55Speaker 2: this afternoon, to play tomorrow night. I'll head there tomorrow.
- 43:58Speaker 2: But they're headed in today after practice to play the
- 44:01Speaker 2: Broncos tomorrow night in the Rocky Mountains at 5,200 feet.
- 44:05Speaker 2: Zach Sharp may not expect to play. Mike McDonald said
- 44:07Speaker 2: the injury report is coming out at about 1 p.m.
- 44:10Speaker 2: or so after that this afternoon. The Houston trash cans
- 44:14Speaker 2: owner announced today that Joe Espada will not return as
- 44:17Speaker 2: Houston's manager. They obviously weren't fooled by the trash cans
- 44:19Speaker 2: winning the trash heap AL West with a 500 record
- 44:22Speaker 2: this season. This news comes one day after the news
- 44:24Speaker 2: that the Mariners have asked Houston for permission to speak
- 44:27Speaker 2: to Espada to replace Dan Wilson potentially as Seattle's manager.
- 44:31Speaker 2: Espada's contract with Houston is ending this month. Also this morning,
- 44:35Speaker 2: the Mariners found out that their second baseman, Cole Young,
- 44:38Speaker 2: has been named as a finalist for the American League
- 44:41Speaker 2: Gold Glove. I still think he was the team MVP.
- 44:44Speaker 2: I know a couple of the text lines said Randy Rosarino,
- 44:46Speaker 2: but the all-around play of Cole Young, who barely missed
- 44:50Speaker 2: an inning, and I'm talking defense, base running, just smart play.
- 44:54Speaker 3: I'm just happy for him to get the opportunity.
- 44:56Speaker 2: Hitting. Phillies are keeping Don Mattingly as their manager for 2027,
- 45:00Speaker 2: so take Donnie Baseball off your list of being a
- 45:03Speaker 2: potential Mariners manager next year. Kraken 5-2 now. 3-0 on
- 45:07Speaker 2: their five-game road trip. They beat Philadelphia on a penalty
- 45:10Speaker 2: shootout goal by McMan. Next up at Tampa Bay tomorrow
- 45:15Speaker 2: right here on 93.3 KJR FM. Then they finish at
- 45:17Speaker 2: Florida before they finally come home. Washington Huskies play on
- 45:21Speaker 2: Friday here on KJR at Purdue. They're likely to be
- 45:24Speaker 2: without quarterback Devon Williams. Coach Jed Fish said his rim
- 45:28Speaker 2: injury is likely to keep Williams out of the start
- 45:30Speaker 2: in West Lafayette on Friday. That means number two Elijah Brown,
- 45:32Speaker 2: who was stellar coming off the bench against Iowa last
- 45:36Speaker 2: week in the Huskies' third straight Big Ten loss. Elijah
- 45:39Speaker 2: Brown going to start at Purdue. Friday right here on KJR.
- 45:42Speaker 2: Purdue just beat Minnesota, which beat Washington. Washington Day Cougars
- 45:46Speaker 2: are 1-5. They play Saturday at Oregon State. That's where
- 45:48Speaker 2: Jess and McIntyre will be. They have a new quarterback
- 45:51Speaker 2: starting for them, a redshirt freshman.
- 45:53Speaker 3: Owen Eshelman. New era, I guess.
- 45:56Speaker 2: Caden Pinnock to the bench. Eshelman comes in.
- 45:59Speaker 3: New play caller in Kirby Moore.
- 46:00Speaker 2: That's right.
- 46:01Speaker 3: And then now new quarterback in Owen Eshelman.
- 46:03Speaker 2: They have some changes on the Cougars' side on offense.
- 46:06Speaker 2: Major League Baseball playoffs yesterday. The Rays even their American
- 46:09Speaker 2: League Championship Series at a game apiece by beating the
- 46:11Speaker 2: Guardians 3-1. On to Cleveland for Game 3 tomorrow. The
- 46:14Speaker 2: ALCS in the National League Championship Series is 2-0 Brewers.
- 46:18Speaker 2: How about that? Over the Dodgers. Game three is in
- 46:20Speaker 2: Dodger Stadium tonight where the Dodgers have to get off
- 46:23Speaker 2: the deck, although if any team could come back from 3-0,
- 46:25Speaker 2: you think it might be the L.A. Dodgers with two
- 46:27Speaker 2: of them at home? Tomorrow night in Denver, the Rocky Mountains.
- 46:32Speaker 2: I'm hearing fall has arrived in the Rockies, like 45,
- 46:36Speaker 2: 50 degrees, rain. I know Colorado. I know Parker lives
- 46:42Speaker 2: there more than I. My wife's from CU Boulder, and
- 46:44Speaker 2: I've been to Colorado so many times. It can be 85,
- 46:47Speaker 2: 90 degrees one day and 30 degrees and snow in
- 46:50Speaker 2: the next. That's how Denver is in October. April and
- 46:54Speaker 2: a lot of the time of the year, Parker Gabriel,
- 46:57Speaker 2: Denver post beat writer covering the Broncos joining us in
- 46:59Speaker 2: the beacon plumbing hotline. Hello, sir. Thanks for joining us again.
- 47:03Speaker 2: And am I right on my weather forecast? Are we
- 47:05Speaker 2: going to have just cool crisp weather? Is there going
- 47:07Speaker 2: to be some particip precipitation in the air?
- 47:13Speaker 4: Yeah, it's no surprise that your sources are spot on.
- 47:16Speaker 4: I mean, it was 85 two days ago.
- 47:17Speaker 2: Exactly.
- 47:18Speaker 4: And right now, I'm looking at the thermometer. It's 46 and, like,
- 47:22Speaker 4: missing at the moment. So it sounds like rain overnight
- 47:27Speaker 4: and tomorrow morning, but maybe at least not actively raining
- 47:31Speaker 4: by the time the game starts tomorrow night.
- 47:33Speaker 2: Okay. So there's your weather report from Denver for you
- 47:35Speaker 2: from Parker Gabriel. News and weather at 7. Parker, let's
- 47:40Speaker 2: talk about Bo Nix in the offense for Denver. He's
- 47:44Speaker 2: a sub-60% thrower, and he's throwing at like five yards
- 47:48Speaker 2: an attempt, the lowest in the league, among the lowest
- 47:50Speaker 2: in the league. Usually when you're throwing so short passes,
- 47:53Speaker 2: they're a little more accurate than 59-some percent. What are
- 47:56Speaker 2: you seeing with Nix? He's been answering some questions this week.
- 48:00Speaker 2: What's going on with Bo Nix in the offense, you think? Yeah.
- 48:05Speaker 4: They just really haven't been able to produce a lot
- 48:07Speaker 4: of plays down the field, and it's a little bit...
- 48:09Speaker 4: I mean, you've seen what offenses get into a rut.
- 48:12Speaker 4: It's a little bit of everything that can go wrong
- 48:15Speaker 4: will go wrong. Right now, I think for Denver, where
- 48:19Speaker 4: they've had too many penalties, they've been in long yardage situations,
- 48:21Speaker 4: the running game hasn't been very efficient, and then when
- 48:26Speaker 4: they do get a good look, then... you know, more
- 48:29Speaker 4: often than not, um, you know, Nick's just hasn't hit it.
- 48:31Speaker 4: So there's been, it's been pretty interesting. I wrote about
- 48:34Speaker 4: this last night, actually, you know, Nick's has, uh, been
- 48:39Speaker 4: fairly um revealing i would say or at least he's
- 48:42Speaker 4: talked a lot of words about just feeling like he's
- 48:46Speaker 4: a little bit caught in between you can sort of
- 48:48Speaker 4: hear it almost like the center monologue the last two
- 48:50Speaker 4: weeks when he's been at the podium of wanting to
- 48:53Speaker 4: be aggressive and feeling like you go into a game
- 48:55Speaker 4: with an aggressive posture and then it just sort of
- 48:58Speaker 4: that doubt creeps in about you know, they've played really
- 49:02Speaker 4: good teams. They're in a lot of games. Don't turn
- 49:04Speaker 4: the ball over. And he just is, you know, more
- 49:07Speaker 4: than anything. I mean, I don't, maybe there's some residual,
- 49:10Speaker 4: you know, worry about the ankle or something, but by
- 49:12Speaker 4: and large, it just feels like he's a little bit
- 49:15Speaker 4: twisted up between the ears in terms of trying to find,
- 49:19Speaker 4: you know, a, sort of zen state between being aggressive
- 49:24Speaker 4: and playing safe and smart.
- 49:26Speaker 2: I'm going to ask the same question I've been asking
- 49:28Speaker 2: ourselves and asking the Seahawks this week at Seahawks headquarters.
- 49:32Speaker 2: How much would a running game help your quarterback? It's
- 49:35Speaker 2: obvious it would, but It's J.K. Dobbins or Busted appears
- 49:38Speaker 2: in Denver. Dobbins only has 200-some yards in five games.
- 49:42Speaker 2: And then nobody else has more than 15 carries on
- 49:45Speaker 2: the team through five games. What's going on with the
- 49:48Speaker 2: Denver run game?
- 49:49Speaker 4: Yeah, the guy who put the week two win against Jacksonville,
- 49:54Speaker 4: which by the end of the year I think is
- 49:55Speaker 4: going to look like a really good win, even though
- 49:57Speaker 4: it was in Denver, the guy who put that game
- 50:00Speaker 4: on ice is a guy you'll be familiar with up
- 50:02Speaker 4: that way, Jonah Coleman, the rookie from Washington. And then
- 50:06Speaker 4: they put him on injured reserve with a high ankle
- 50:08Speaker 4: sprain the next week, and he Part of it was
- 50:13Speaker 4: the timing of this game. This is the fourth game.
- 50:15Speaker 4: He'll miss. He's eligible to come back next week. I
- 50:18Speaker 4: think they just weren't 100% sure. It didn't look like
- 50:21Speaker 4: a four-game injury, but with the fourth game being on
- 50:24Speaker 4: a short week, it's not really four weeks. They played
- 50:28Speaker 4: it safe. They put him on injured reserve. No one
- 50:31Speaker 4: said this, but I have to wonder if they regret
- 50:33Speaker 4: that a little bit because that he's had looked so
- 50:36Speaker 4: natural between the tackles and Dobbins hasn't looked as explosive
- 50:41Speaker 4: and hasn't been as explosive as he was last year.
- 50:43Speaker 4: And so, yeah, they've really, they've really sort of been
- 50:46Speaker 4: hurting in the run game. Now they got it going
- 50:48Speaker 4: a little bit in the fourth quarter against the chargers
- 50:51Speaker 4: to put them away last week. And for his, much
- 50:53Speaker 4: of a train wreck of the chargers are the defensive
- 50:55Speaker 4: front's pretty good. So that, that was maybe a positive sign,
- 50:58Speaker 4: but Sean Payton always says the two things, the two
- 51:01Speaker 4: best friends of a quarterback are a good run game
- 51:03Speaker 4: and a good defense. And the Broncos have like 0.75
- 51:07Speaker 4: out of two of that at the moment.
- 51:09Speaker 2: So good. I'm glad you brought up Jonah Coleman for
- 51:11Speaker 2: our Husky fans. So it sounds like he's going to
- 51:14Speaker 2: come back and it sounds like maybe the high ankle
- 51:16Speaker 2: sprain isn't the type that he might have to ease
- 51:18Speaker 2: himself back in. You think he plays in 10 days
- 51:20Speaker 2: in the Broncos next game?
- 51:23Speaker 4: Yeah, and I think he'll jump. You know, he wasn't
- 51:25Speaker 4: handling a real heavy workload. He played more against Jacksonville
- 51:29Speaker 4: in Week 2 because Dobbins was dealing with some muscle
- 51:32Speaker 4: spasms in his legs. But I think they want to
- 51:36Speaker 4: get a good long look at what that looks like
- 51:38Speaker 4: because all through training camp, they really liked how decisive
- 51:41Speaker 4: he was and the way he got north and south.
- 51:44Speaker 4: And then You know, the running backs coach told me
- 51:47Speaker 4: he's he's butt thighs and shoulder pads and not much else.
- 51:51Speaker 4: And that's tough to tackle. And so they they really
- 51:54Speaker 4: like what it looked like. And they liked it even
- 51:55Speaker 4: more when they saw it, you know, live and in
- 51:59Speaker 4: color in the regular season. And so I think he
- 52:02Speaker 4: jumps back in and they see what what he can
- 52:04Speaker 4: do for the running game in a pretty substantial way.
- 52:06Speaker 2: That's Parker Gabriel. He's talking to us from Denver, the
- 52:08Speaker 2: Broncos beat writer for the Denver Post. He's talking about
- 52:10Speaker 2: Jonah Coleman, the rookie running back from the Washington Huskies,
- 52:13Speaker 2: who's on injured reserve so he will not play tomorrow night.
- 52:16Speaker 2: The final of the four games he'll miss for Denver
- 52:18Speaker 2: on IR when the Broncos host the Seahawks tomorrow, 5-15
- 52:22Speaker 2: on Thursday Night Football. The run defense for Denver, it
- 52:26Speaker 2: jumps out at me they're averaging 145 yards allowed per
- 52:29Speaker 2: game near the bottom 10 or so in the league.
- 52:33Speaker 2: Any concern that that's systemic or is this just early
- 52:37Speaker 2: in the season? You're playing a first place schedule there
- 52:39Speaker 2: in Denver.
- 52:40Speaker 4: Yeah. I honestly, like, even though the numbers don't look great,
- 52:44Speaker 4: I don't have a lot of concern. I mean, the
- 52:46Speaker 4: worst they played by far was week one against Kansas city.
- 52:49Speaker 4: And they gave up well over 200 yards and they
- 52:52Speaker 4: missed 28 tackles according to next gen stats. So they
- 52:55Speaker 4: haven't done that since they've been a better tackling team
- 52:57Speaker 4: and the chargers, the chargers put up a good number
- 53:01Speaker 4: last week. Come on, if it all had a 42
- 53:03Speaker 4: yard touchdown where the tackling issue crept up again, but
- 53:06Speaker 4: I don't, Overall, it's a team that's had one bad
- 53:09Speaker 4: outing and given up a couple of big plays. I
- 53:11Speaker 4: don't think they're a bad run defense. Now, At the moment,
- 53:16Speaker 4: this will be the sixth game that they've been without
- 53:18Speaker 4: Jonathan Cooper, who's facing a felony assault charge and is
- 53:23Speaker 4: on the commissioner's exempt list at the moment. And he's
- 53:28Speaker 4: their best run defender by far at the edge position
- 53:30Speaker 4: and one of their best run defenders overall. And so
- 53:33Speaker 4: I think you've felt the impact of that. They haven't
- 53:35Speaker 4: been an elite group like they were overall last year.
- 53:38Speaker 4: But in general, I think they've settled into being a–
- 53:42Speaker 4: pretty good run defending team and one that should get
- 53:46Speaker 4: better over the course of the year if they get
- 53:48Speaker 4: Jonathan Cooper back at some point.
- 53:49Speaker 2: So many similarities between the Broncos and the Seahawks. Same record,
- 53:53Speaker 2: same problems on offense, running game with a kind of
- 53:56Speaker 2: a potpourri of running backs and no one taking the lead,
- 53:59Speaker 2: and veteran defensive starters on the commissioner's exempt list. I mean,
- 54:03Speaker 2: you can go all the way down the list on
- 54:05Speaker 2: Arnold here in Seattle and You know what has not
- 54:08Speaker 2: come up, so leave it to a Seahawks beat writer
- 54:10Speaker 2: on Seattle radio to bring it up. Nothing has come
- 54:13Speaker 2: of the Graham Benzinger, Mike McDonald comments about Sean Payton
- 54:17Speaker 2: this week. Maybe it's because it's been three or four
- 54:20Speaker 2: weeks now, but what was the fallout from that? We
- 54:23Speaker 2: saw Payton's public comments, but what do you think about
- 54:26Speaker 2: all of that inside ball stuff that got released and released?
- 54:29Speaker 2: Of course, Benziger shouldn't have put it out. We know that.
- 54:32Speaker 2: And Mike McDonald got burned by that. But from here,
- 54:37Speaker 2: it was that Mike McDonald said, I really respect Sean Payton.
- 54:40Speaker 2: I've come to be friends with him in the team
- 54:41Speaker 2: meetings and the league meetings. And we get along great.
- 54:45Speaker 2: And Payton said all the right things after McDonald called him.
- 54:50Speaker 2: But from where you sit, how do you think that
- 54:52Speaker 2: sat there in Sean Payton and in Bronco land?
- 54:57Speaker 4: It wasn't wild about the fact that it came out
- 55:00Speaker 4: and we had heard not, not to that extent, like it,
- 55:02Speaker 4: but there were a couple of things that like made
- 55:05Speaker 4: a lot more sense here. Once it did. One was
- 55:08Speaker 4: the fact that beginning in 2025, the Broncos really sort
- 55:12Speaker 4: of tightened the screws on, on, on fans and attendance
- 55:15Speaker 4: at games and what they could shoot and what they did. And,
- 55:17Speaker 4: and we asked around about like, Hey, why is this?
- 55:20Speaker 4: And we, It was just that sort of general, well,
- 55:23Speaker 4: you know, a lot of teams are worried about their
- 55:25Speaker 4: plays getting, you know, filmed or ending up on social
- 55:28Speaker 4: media or whatever. Not so specifically that. And it's interesting, like,
- 55:32Speaker 4: I think they just kind of got wind of it
- 55:35Speaker 4: over the course of the season. You know how it goes. Like,
- 55:38Speaker 4: there's a lot of connections, you know, player to player,
- 55:41Speaker 4: team to team, teams, workout players that have been in
- 55:44Speaker 4: other places and training camp over the course of time.
- 55:46Speaker 4: I'm sure they ask about that along the way. So
- 55:49Speaker 4: there's a lot of ways they could have found out.
- 55:51Speaker 4: The thing about Sean is if anything bothered him about it,
- 55:54Speaker 4: my guess, it would, it would be that it was about, um,
- 55:57Speaker 4: the elevator scene that mcdonald you know like that he
- 56:01Speaker 4: explained about yeah how he sort of bowed up and
- 56:03Speaker 4: then it didn't come up like the rest of it
- 56:05Speaker 4: like to be frank like sean's put his foot in
- 56:07Speaker 4: his mouth and said stuff he shouldn't so many times
- 56:09Speaker 4: over the course of his career that like i really
- 56:12Speaker 4: don't think he was he was all that mad about
- 56:14Speaker 4: that element of it i think it was just more
- 56:17Speaker 4: of the like you know now you're dealing with this
- 56:20Speaker 4: week one or whatever it was and that sort of.
- 56:21Speaker 2: Thing It's always something between these two teams, Russell Wilson
- 56:27Speaker 2: and the Super Bowl.
- 56:29Speaker 4: Exactly.
- 56:30Speaker 2: Parker Gabriel, the Broncos beat writer from the Denver Post
- 56:33Speaker 2: joining us. We like to have the newspaper writers on
- 56:36Speaker 2: our show because there are fewer and fewer of them.
- 56:38Speaker 2: That's right. The beat writers. So hats off to you, sir.
- 56:42Speaker 4: Who's more? With the newspapers, as you know well, Greg.
- 56:45Speaker 2: Oh, I know more than I've ever known here in
- 56:47Speaker 2: the last week or so, Parker. I know. Appreciate that.
- 56:51Speaker 2: Let me ask you, from your seat, from when you
- 56:53Speaker 2: look at Seattle, and then you compare it to the
- 56:56Speaker 2: team you cover, who do you think is more desperate tomorrow?
- 56:58Speaker 2: They're both 3-2. They're both division champions that went to
- 57:01Speaker 2: the conference championship games. At 3-2, who do you think
- 57:04Speaker 2: is more desperate tomorrow?
- 57:06Speaker 4: Good question. I don't know that either team has to
- 57:09Speaker 4: be really desperate, but I guess I would... I guess
- 57:12Speaker 4: I would say Seattle. I mean, it just seems like
- 57:14Speaker 4: ultimately there's more contenders. Even though the AFC West is good,
- 57:20Speaker 4: the NFC West clearly so far this season has been
- 57:23Speaker 4: better and is shaping up to be a monster. And
- 57:27Speaker 4: not only that, but the Broncos, they closed their season
- 57:30Speaker 4: the last three weeks they play Buffalo, New England, and
- 57:33Speaker 4: then the Chargers, which at the beginning of the year
- 57:35Speaker 4: looked like a rough stretch. It still does, maybe minus
- 57:37Speaker 4: the Chargers part of that. But the first six games...
- 57:42Speaker 4: it has been a beast for the Broncos. And so
- 57:44Speaker 4: that it was, I think all along, not like Sean
- 57:46Speaker 4: Payton would step up to the podium and say this,
- 57:47Speaker 4: but like realistically, you can look at their schedule and say,
- 57:51Speaker 4: and we did when it came out, like if you
- 57:53Speaker 4: get through the first six at three and three, you're
- 57:56Speaker 4: really in fine shape. They've got a chance to make
- 57:58Speaker 4: some hay. The middle of their schedule is a little
- 58:00Speaker 4: bit softer. They play Kansas city in a couple of weeks,
- 58:01Speaker 4: but literally like pretty much every bad team on their
- 58:04Speaker 4: schedule is between the end of October and mid December.
- 58:08Speaker 4: So it's, This is like, in some ways, I think
- 58:11Speaker 4: the Broncos are, it's not exactly a house money game,
- 58:14Speaker 4: but they've already done what they really sort of baseline
- 58:17Speaker 4: needed to do over these first six weeks. They'd love
- 58:19Speaker 4: to be four and two. But if you're talking about
- 58:21Speaker 4: like winning a division, it's going to be tougher for
- 58:24Speaker 4: Seattle from three and three, I think, than it would
- 58:26Speaker 4: be for the Broncos from three and three.
- 58:28Speaker 2: That's an interesting point, Parker, because yeah, you got like,
- 58:31Speaker 2: not just the mini buy, but you got a full
- 58:33Speaker 2: on buy after the Seahawks because you're at Arizona.
- 58:36Speaker 17: Yeah.
- 58:36Speaker 2: Which I think is subterranean. I just saw them in person.
- 58:40Speaker 2: Then you do. You're at the Chiefs at home. You're
- 58:42Speaker 2: at Carolina versus Las Vegas, at Pittsburgh versus Miami, at
- 58:47Speaker 2: the Jets, then Vegas, and then the three games you mentioned.
- 58:50Speaker 2: The Buffalo game is on Christmas right before the Seahawks. Same,
- 58:53Speaker 2: like three hours before the Seahawks are playing San Francisco
- 58:56Speaker 2: on Christmas. Anything surprise you? Anything we should know about
- 58:59Speaker 2: the Broncos that you didn't expect that you've seen through
- 59:02Speaker 2: six games that have jumped out at you?
- 59:05Speaker 4: Yeah. Yeah, the biggest one is that they just have
- 59:09Speaker 4: not figured out a way, um, to get Jalen Waddle involved.
- 59:13Speaker 9: Really?
- 59:13Speaker 4: He had the one big game against Jacksonville. And besides that, it's, uh,
- 59:17Speaker 4: three of the nine lowest single-game totals of his career receiving,
- 59:21Speaker 4: including all his time in Miami, obviously, and four out of,
- 59:25Speaker 4: I think, the 18. I mean, he had 100-plus yards
- 59:27Speaker 4: against Jacksonville, and he's at 35 or less in every
- 59:30Speaker 4: other game they've played so far this year. And not
- 59:32Speaker 4: only is he not producing, but neither is Corlin Sutton.
- 59:35Speaker 4: And so it just is a part of the larger—
- 59:38Speaker 4: you know, set of problems they're having throwing the football. But,
- 59:42Speaker 4: you know, it's funny, like Greg, you were saying all
- 59:43Speaker 4: of the similarities between the two teams so far, the
- 59:48Speaker 4: one major difference is that, you know, Seattle's got the
- 59:51Speaker 4: best receiver on the planet and the Broncos have a
- 59:53Speaker 4: couple of guys that they think are really good, but
- 59:55Speaker 4: they've done really almost nothing so far this season.
- 59:58Speaker 2: Parker, you're the man, man. You know your stuff. You
- 1:00:00Speaker 2: explain it really well. I love your stories. I love
- 1:00:03Speaker 2: the fact that you're a traveling newspaper beat writer when
- 1:00:05Speaker 2: there are so many fewer of them. Keep doing what
- 1:00:08Speaker 2: you do. I appreciate your time. I'll say hi to
- 1:00:09Speaker 2: you tomorrow in the press box. Thanks, man.
- 1:00:12Speaker 4: Appreciate you.
- 1:00:13Speaker 2: Thanks. Parker Gabriel, Denver Post, Broncos beat writer. Yeah, we
- 1:00:17Speaker 2: got to stick together. Newspaper beat guys. They're like dinosaurs.
- 1:00:22Speaker 2: You see them on the side of the road, you
- 1:00:23Speaker 2: think it's Jurassic Park or something. There's so few of
- 1:00:26Speaker 2: us anymore.
- 1:00:27Speaker 9: Well, I just appreciate the in-person record of what has
- 1:00:32Speaker 9: happened rather than just AI spitting things out.
- 1:00:35Speaker 2: Thank you. I had a whole tirade to my– I
- 1:00:39Speaker 2: taught yesterday afternoon my graduate students at the University of Washington.
- 1:00:42Speaker 3: They should know.
- 1:00:43Speaker 2: In the athletic leadership program. And, yeah, I told them
- 1:00:46Speaker 2: AI is modern plagiarism. It is, though.
- 1:00:49Speaker 3: It's just sourcing.
- 1:00:50Speaker 9: But I think that– not to go back into it,
- 1:00:53Speaker 9: but the.
- 1:00:55Speaker 3: Thing is, where is it sourcing from?
- 1:00:57Speaker 2: Exactly. There's an original source somewhere who's getting ripped off
- 1:01:02Speaker 2: and not getting any recognition, not any pay or anything.
- 1:01:06Speaker 2: I know I'm biased. I just took my job I
- 1:01:08Speaker 2: had for 21 years, so I'm a little bit biased.
- 1:01:12Speaker 3: I wouldn't call that biased. I just say you're being honest. Yeah.
- 1:01:16Speaker 2: Up next, we'll go to the Tacoma Dodge Tech. There's
- 1:01:19Speaker 2: a great one on there already. I'll just say it right. 206,
- 1:01:21Speaker 2: is Graham Benzinger the honorary captain for Seahawks Broncos tomorrow?
- 1:01:28Speaker 9: Oh, boy.
- 1:01:28Speaker 3: I wonder if he would ever show us. No, he
- 1:01:30Speaker 3: doesn't do that. He doesn't cover games.
- 1:01:33Speaker 4: No.
- 1:01:33Speaker 2: If he shows up anywhere near Mike McDonald, it might
- 1:01:35Speaker 2: go down. You'd think he bowed up about Sean Payton.
- 1:01:38Speaker 3: Yeah, that was a bridge very, very firmly burned.
- 1:01:42Speaker 2: We'll play back your talkbacks if we have any on
- 1:01:44Speaker 2: the Tacoma Dodge text line and our 933kgo. com website. We're

- 1:03:19Speaker 12: Hey, it's Ian Furness. In the spirit of Halloween, I'm
- 1:03:21Speaker 12: going to tell you a little horror story. Someone I
- 1:03:23Speaker 12: know almost paid nearly $ 20, 000 to replace six windows and
- 1:03:28Speaker 12: a slider at their house. That's enough to send a
- 1:03:30Speaker 12: chill right down my spine. Luckily, he came to me
- 1:03:32Speaker 12: before signing on the dotted line. I was able to
- 1:03:34Speaker 12: recommend my good friends at Window World. Window World will
- 1:03:36Speaker 12: put your fears at ease by providing an upfront down
- 1:03:39Speaker 12: to the penny price without all those terrifying high-pressure sales tactics.
- 1:03:43Speaker 12: Like six beautiful new energy-efficient windows professionally installed, plus an
- 1:03:47Speaker 12: easy sliding patio door including a limited lifetime warranty, all
- 1:03:50Speaker 12: for one upfront price of only $ 6, 944. That's over $ 10, 000
- 1:03:52Speaker 12: worth of savings just by choosing Window World. More than
- 1:03:58Speaker 12: enough to spring for the good candy this Halloween. That's right,
- 1:04:00Speaker 12: the big stuff, the king size. So if you want
- 1:04:02Speaker 12: no tricks and all treats, call my friends at Window World.
- 1:04:04Speaker 12: Go to windowworldpugessound.com. That's windowworldpugessound.com. Window World, simply the best
- 1:04:11Speaker 12: for definitely less.
- 1:04:13Speaker 19: I'm Bradley Johnson with 1-800-DY-AWAY. Let's talk about Halloween. Whether
- 1:04:20Speaker 19: it's boo or booze, Halloween is full of surprises. And
- 1:04:24Speaker 19: what costume's more spooky than a ghost, ghoul.
- 1:04:27Speaker 4: Or goblin?
- 1:04:28Speaker 2: A police officer.
- 1:04:30Speaker 19: With props flashing in your rearview mirror. At 1-800-DY-AWAY, we
- 1:04:35Speaker 19: know Halloween is not only about the kids. Adults like
- 1:04:39Speaker 19: to unwind and indulge, too. Often partaking in punch, potion,
- 1:04:44Speaker 19: or brew. And the take only one signs above the
- 1:04:47Speaker 19: candy never seem to find themselves at the bar. Be
- 1:04:51Speaker 19: safe this Halloween. Use a designated driver. But if you've
- 1:04:54Speaker 19: got Butterfingers behind the wheel, here's a simple lifesaver. Call
- 1:05:00Speaker 19: 1-800-DY-AWAY or go to 1-800-DY-AWAY.com. If this Halloween your jack-o'-lantern

- 1:05:12Speaker 8: Hey, Gang of Softie back here. Quick question. What's your excuse?
- 1:05:16Speaker 8: What's your excuse for not taking the first mark challenge yet?
- 1:05:19Speaker 8: You've been meaning to do it, just haven't gotten around
- 1:05:21Speaker 8: to it. You're afraid it might be a high pressure
- 1:05:23Speaker 8: salesperson on the phone or maybe your insurance agent is
- 1:05:26Speaker 8: your cousin, Bob, and Thanksgiving dinner could be a little awkward. Well, seriously,
- 1:05:30Speaker 8: the real question is, what is your excuse worth? What
- 1:05:33Speaker 8: if First Mark Insurance could save you, say, $ 1, 000 a year?
- 1:05:36Speaker 2: Do the math.
- 1:05:37Speaker 8: 20 years from now, that's $ 20, 000. If you'd rather spend
- 1:05:40Speaker 8: $ 20, 000 to avoid an awkward conversation with Cousin Bob, he
- 1:05:44Speaker 8: must be one heck of a cousin. When I took
- 1:05:46Speaker 8: the First Mark Challenge, First Mark compared dozens of top
- 1:05:49Speaker 8: insurance companies and ended up finding me better coverage and
- 1:05:53Speaker 8: saved me thousands. I got world-class customer service, no pressure,
- 1:05:57Speaker 8: no obligation, and it didn't cost me a dime. Listen,
- 1:05:59Speaker 8: more than 11,000 people have already taken the First Mark Challenge.
- 1:06:02Speaker 8: Why don't you be the next First Mark victory? Jump

- 1:06:09Speaker 2: It's free.

- 1:07:43Speaker 2: Hey, Dick Fane here. Well, summer's over, but it was
- 1:07:45Speaker 2: a great one.
- 1:07:46Speaker 10: Plenty of warm days, sunny skies where you spent a
- 1:07:48Speaker 10: lot of time outdoors, and very likely a lot of
- 1:07:50Speaker 10: hosting went on where family and friends went in and
- 1:07:53Speaker 10: out of your home, tracking whatever was outside the house
- 1:07:56Speaker 10: into the house.
- 1:07:56Speaker 2: Well, now that fall is here.
- 1:07:57Speaker 10: And it's time to cozy up inside, wouldn't it be
- 1:07:59Speaker 10: nice to have sparkling clean carpets to cozy up on?
- 1:08:02Speaker 10: There's only one right way to do it, the Alpine
- 1:08:04Speaker 10: Services Super Truck. Alpine doesn't clean carpets like the other
- 1:08:08Speaker 10: guys who use their puny vacuums, chemicals, and cold water.
- 1:08:11Speaker 2: Oh, no.
- 1:08:12Speaker 10: Alpine uses 265-degree triple-filtered steam, not only to get the dirt,
- 1:08:17Speaker 10: but also any bacteria, viruses, pet dander, and other nastiness
- 1:08:20Speaker 10: that may have collected during the summer months. So get
- 1:08:23Speaker 10: your home ready for the cold weather and indoor time
- 1:08:25Speaker 10: that we're entering into with Alpine, and take 75 bucks
- 1:08:28Speaker 10: off the top if you mention me or KJR.
- 1:08:30Speaker 19: Give them a call right now, 206- hey.
- 1:08:37Speaker 20: I just want to shout out how selfless of a
- 1:08:39Speaker 20: guy greg bell really is he could have chosen any
- 1:08:41Speaker 20: song for his show opener hell's bells for whom the
- 1:08:45Speaker 20: bell tolls hell even ring my bell but instead he
- 1:08:48Speaker 20: decided to show some love to his partner in crime
- 1:08:50Speaker 20: and he chose return of the mac that's solid dude.
- 1:08:56Speaker 9: His partner in crime is his daughter sarah i was
- 1:08:59Speaker 9: wondering where he was going there. I do. There are
- 1:09:03Speaker 9: a lot of songs that do have the Bell name
- 1:09:05Speaker 9: in it.
- 1:09:05Speaker 4: Yes.
- 1:09:06Speaker 9: So.
- 1:09:07Speaker 3: I appreciate that talk back.
- 1:09:09Speaker 2: Thank you for that.
- 1:09:10Speaker 4: Yes.
- 1:09:10Speaker 9: And I'm not, we joke about it that, yeah, when
- 1:09:14Speaker 9: I returned to work with Greg Bell once again.
- 1:09:17Speaker 2: That's right.
- 1:09:18Speaker 9: But it is for Sarah, his daughter, who is currently
- 1:09:20Speaker 9: stationed in the Coast Guard.
- 1:09:22Speaker 2: But we did have Coach Mac on the show this week.
- 1:09:24Speaker 3: Well, that was a really big welcome of the Mac.
- 1:09:27Speaker 2: That was a welcome of the Mac. Coach Mac.
- 1:09:29Speaker 3: We might have to do that again.
- 1:09:30Speaker 2: That was great.
- 1:09:31Speaker 3: We got a lot of requests.
- 1:09:31Speaker 2: And we still have people on the text line, even today,
- 1:09:34Speaker 2: talking about someone needs to tell George Helani four points
- 1:09:38Speaker 2: of contact in the country and five points in the city.
- 1:09:41Speaker 3: Good thing he's also an educator.
- 1:09:42Speaker 2: That was great. City being traffic around players, obviously, line
- 1:09:47Speaker 2: of scrimmage. That was awesome.
- 1:09:49Speaker 9: The way he was describing it, too, was also in
- 1:09:52Speaker 9: a way that he was like yelling at you, but
- 1:09:54Speaker 9: also teaching you at the same time.
- 1:09:56Speaker 3: I'm like, that's why I said welcome to the dinner table.
- 1:09:59Speaker 2: Stop interrupting me, Jessamyn. I'm talking.
- 1:10:01Speaker 3: Jessamyn, I'm talking. Okay. Now you guys get how I am,
- 1:10:05Speaker 3: like why I am what I am.
- 1:10:07Speaker 2: If you miss that, go to the Monday podcast page
- 1:10:10Speaker 2: of the Greg Bell Show on 933KJR. com.
- 1:10:13Speaker 3: It'll be right in the middle of it.
- 1:10:14Speaker 2: It is highly entertaining. It's really good. Jessamyn texted me
- 1:10:20Speaker 2: during the Seahawks 49ers game on Sunday and said, hey,
- 1:10:22Speaker 2: can we have our dad? How about I put my
- 1:10:24Speaker 2: dad on tomorrow? Yeah. have him break down the 49ers-Seahawks game,
- 1:10:28Speaker 2: and he did.
- 1:10:29Speaker 4: It was great.
- 1:10:29Speaker 3: And it wasn't just because he's my dad.
- 1:10:32Speaker 9: All of his texts to me were, I'm like, this
- 1:10:34Speaker 9: is a great breakdown.
- 1:10:36Speaker 3: Maybe we should just have him on.
- 1:10:38Speaker 2: Why not? That was awesome. 425 from the Tacoma Dodge
- 1:10:43Speaker 2: text line. Factor Fiction is coming up in four minutes.
- 1:10:45Speaker 2: 425 from last night, the Kraken. Gru had me hyped
- 1:10:51Speaker 2: up last night. 360 had an interesting inside hockey thing.
- 1:10:55Speaker 2: It said probably actually used hockey stick tape the trainer
- 1:10:58Speaker 2: was using, which is one inch wide, rather than regular
- 1:11:02Speaker 2: athletic tape, which is an inch and a half wide.
- 1:11:05Speaker 2: Details matter. I guess so. But yeah. Okay, thanks. We're
- 1:11:09Speaker 2: talking about the first goal, Otovinen's career, the 24-year-old defenseman,
- 1:11:13Speaker 2: Billy Otovinen, who scored from the high slot thanks to
- 1:11:16Speaker 2: Matty Beneers' screen in front of the goaltender. And then
- 1:11:19Speaker 2: they were putting tape on the spine of the puck to...
- 1:11:22Speaker 2: commemorate and mark it with a sharpie for his first goal.
- 1:11:25Speaker 2: That was a cool little producer moment for TV to
- 1:11:27Speaker 2: get that. I'm glad they did. When you're on the road,
- 1:11:31Speaker 2: you're not even working with your home team camera people, right? Yeah,
- 1:11:35Speaker 2: they're all locally sourced. Exactly. They're contracted from the Philadelphia area,
- 1:11:39Speaker 2: and it was great of them to get that shot.
- 1:11:41Speaker 2: That was really cool. 509 says, take out Sam Darnold.
- 1:11:47Speaker 2: Put in Drew Locke.
- 1:11:48Speaker 4: Period.
- 1:11:49Speaker 2: Ride the hot hand. Sam Darnold is literally losing game
- 1:11:53Speaker 2: for us. 206, Charbonnet is massively overrated. Rushing TDs are
- 1:12:00Speaker 2: useless on the stat sheet until you don't win games
- 1:12:02Speaker 2: because you don't score. He's good. K9 is one of
- 1:12:05Speaker 2: the most electric runners I've ever seen. And he took
- 1:12:09Speaker 2: it to the next level after changing staff last year.
- 1:12:11Speaker 2: Charbs does not show up anymore. in the opposing run
- 1:12:15Speaker 2: defense plan.
- 1:12:16Speaker 4: Sorry.
- 1:12:17Speaker 2: I'm sorry. He's not doing anything versus a stacked box,
- 1:12:20Speaker 2: and that's the difference between nice to have and great
- 1:12:22Speaker 2: running backs.
- 1:12:25Speaker 9: Well, that split level between he and Kenneth last year
- 1:12:29Speaker 9: was great, and they both had the opportunity to stay
- 1:12:32Speaker 9: fresh and be great in the given moments that they
- 1:12:35Speaker 9: were called into action.
- 1:12:36Speaker 2: That's why they did it, although Walker wasn't happy, and
- 1:12:39Speaker 2: the 206 points that out. Isn't it also true that
- 1:12:41Speaker 2: K-9 wasn't happy here, especially with his role, and wanted out? Correct.
- 1:12:46Speaker 2: He made that pretty clear to me multiple times last season,
- 1:12:49Speaker 2: including four days before the Super Bowl. Again, I asked him.
- 1:12:52Speaker 2: How do you feel about this job share? And he said,
- 1:12:54Speaker 2: how would you feel?
- 1:12:55Speaker 3: Yeah, that was the quote.
- 1:12:58Speaker 2: How would you feel? That was my lead to my
- 1:13:00Speaker 2: story from San Jose that day.
- 1:13:02Speaker 3: It depends, though.
- 1:13:04Speaker 9: In a running back situation, because earlier in the show,
- 1:13:07Speaker 9: you had mentioned how the longevity of that specific position
- 1:13:11Speaker 9: is very tough.
- 1:13:12Speaker 2: Shortest in the league.
- 1:13:13Speaker 3: Who are now realizing.
- 1:13:15Speaker 9: That might actually look at that as a positive. And
- 1:13:18Speaker 9: it just depends on who the person is and what
- 1:13:21Speaker 9: they want to do.
- 1:13:21Speaker 2: That's a good point because if Walker doesn't play 17
- 1:13:24Speaker 2: games last year and he gets hurt for the fourth
- 1:13:26Speaker 2: consecutive season, he doesn't get a $ 14 million a year
- 1:13:29Speaker 2: contract from the Chiefs. Exactly. He doesn't become the Super
- 1:13:32Speaker 2: Bowl MVP because he might not have been healthy enough
- 1:13:34Speaker 2: to play in the game. That was the Seahawks' math. Now,
- 1:13:36Speaker 2: they were never going to pay him the $ 14 million.
- 1:13:38Speaker 9: Well, they were never planning on using them the way
- 1:13:41Speaker 9: they had to when Zach went out.
- 1:13:43Speaker 4: Correct.
- 1:13:44Speaker 9: And I mean, I don't think that Kenneth meant that
- 1:13:48Speaker 9: in a negative way towards the Seahawks either.
- 1:13:50Speaker 2: No, but his point was, don't give me a job
- 1:13:53Speaker 2: share for the first time in my career, in my
- 1:13:55Speaker 2: contract year. That was the first time in four years
- 1:13:59Speaker 2: that he was 40% carry guy.
- 1:14:00Speaker 3: Are you hiding me from the rest of the league?
- 1:14:03Speaker 9: But then he was called into action when it mattered
- 1:14:05Speaker 9: the most, and he shined.
- 1:14:07Speaker 2: And he got paid for it. It all worked out
- 1:14:09Speaker 2: for him. Not for the Seahawks.
- 1:14:11Speaker 3: It did for the Super Bowl championship.
- 1:14:14Speaker 2: Beside that little trophy they got in their trophy case
- 1:14:17Speaker 2: in Renton, that's true. And a 206 real quick says,
- 1:14:21Speaker 2: if Price got benched, why... Helani should be a ghost
- 1:14:26Speaker 2: at this point. He's not even blocking anymore. Oh, and
- 1:14:30Speaker 2: Anthony Bradford is being missed in the run game. Oh,
- 1:14:32Speaker 2: how the tide has turned on Anthony Bradford. Dude back
- 1:14:36Speaker 2: here in a couple weeks off injured reserve. Now's your
- 1:14:38Speaker 2: chance to win $ 1, 000 from Lucky Eagle Casino and Hotel.
- 1:14:41Speaker 2: We're set to go. Glad you're with us.
- 1:14:42Speaker 1: It's your shot at our weekly $ 1, 000 and the $ 10, 000
- 1:14:47Speaker 1: grand prize.
- 1:14:49Speaker 2: It's Fact or Fiction.
- 1:14:51Speaker 1: Proudly presented by Lucky Eagle Casino and Hotel, where every
- 1:14:54Speaker 1: day feels lucky. Fact or Fiction is on. Sports Radio 93.3,
- 1:14:59Speaker 1: KJR FM.
- 1:15:06Speaker 2: Back to campus. Back to school. Or I was yesterday,
- 1:15:10Speaker 2: teaching at UW. Ohio State-Indiana biggest game of the college
- 1:15:13Speaker 2: football weekend. We already picked that one. I picked that
- 1:15:15Speaker 2: on Monday on Factor Fiction. So let's do the second
- 1:15:19Speaker 2: biggest game, shall we? Second-ranked Notre Dame is at No.
- 1:15:22Speaker 2: 8 Brigham Young on Saturday. It's the ABC primetime TV game.
- 1:15:25Speaker 2: College game day is in Provo. Notre Dame's boat racing everybody,
- 1:15:30Speaker 2: but they haven't played anybody that's really good. I mean,
- 1:15:32Speaker 2: Wisconsin's 4-1. They won at Penn State, but that's about it.
- 1:15:37Speaker 9: The independent schedule always gives you a little bit of a.
- 1:15:41Speaker 3: I don't know this team that well.
- 1:15:42Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly. They played Rice. Come on. You're scheduling Rice?
- 1:15:47Speaker 3: Oh, don't throw shades at the fighting Luke Wilsons.
- 1:15:49Speaker 2: That's true. He did Luke Wilson. That's true. That's true.
- 1:15:54Speaker 2: I have friends at Rice, but they're not a football team.
- 1:15:57Speaker 2: They've also beaten Michigan State, Purdue, North Carolina, and Stanford. Okay,
- 1:16:03Speaker 2: North Carolina, you say they're good. They're the eighth-placed team
- 1:16:05Speaker 2: in the ACC, so step back. BYU, unbeaten also, but
- 1:16:09Speaker 2: they haven't played really anyone either. Their best win so
- 1:16:11Speaker 2: far has been over Arizona in the newly reformed Big 12.
- 1:16:16Speaker 2: They're at home, and they're 10.5-point underdogs. It's really unusual
- 1:16:21Speaker 2: for a top-10 team to be at home and a
- 1:16:23Speaker 2: double-digit underdog. That's how much people are loving themselves some
- 1:16:26Speaker 2: Notre Dame right now.
- 1:16:28Speaker 3: Those Irishmen, they'll get you to fight.
- 1:16:30Speaker 2: Give me the Mormons in ten and a half. I
- 1:16:32Speaker 2: like it. What did Chuck call it this week? Catholics
- 1:16:34Speaker 2: versus converts. The Catholics against the Mormons. Notre Dame at BYU.
- 1:16:41Speaker 2: BYU a ten and a half point home underdog. I
- 1:16:43Speaker 2: say BYU can keep it close and either win outright
- 1:16:48Speaker 2: or lose by ten or fewer points. If you agree
- 1:16:50Speaker 2: with me, Notre Dame will not beat BYU by more
- 1:16:54Speaker 2: than 11 points. BYU plus 10.5 at home. If you agree,
- 1:16:58Speaker 2: text FACT to 49451. If you disagree, in other words,
- 1:17:01Speaker 2: if you don't want to win $ 1, 000, text FICTION to 49451.
- 1:17:05Speaker 2: You have 12 minutes. We'll do it again at 2.35
- 1:17:07Speaker 2: with Ian Furness and his show. 3.35 with Dave Softy, Mauler,
- 1:17:11Speaker 2: and Dick Fane and their show. Your chance to win
- 1:17:14Speaker 2: $ 1, 000 from the Lucky Eagle Casino Hotel. BYU plus 10.5.
- 1:17:18Speaker 2: at home against Notre Dame in a top 10 matchup
- 1:17:20Speaker 2: in Provo, Utah on Saturday. I checked the weather because
- 1:17:23Speaker 2: I was about to do the over-under. It's going to
- 1:17:25Speaker 2: be beautiful, like 60 to 70 degrees kickoff and sunny
- 1:17:29Speaker 2: in Provo.
- 1:17:30Speaker 9: I've been all over the country, and I was just
- 1:17:32Speaker 9: in Utah last weekend.
- 1:17:33Speaker 3: It was just perfect.
- 1:17:35Speaker 2: That stadium, you've been to Provo.
- 1:17:37Speaker 3: Yeah, I have.
- 1:17:38Speaker 9: Yeah, I've been to BYU twice, yes.
- 1:17:41Speaker 2: I covered UW at BYU in one of Sarkeesian's first games,
- 1:17:45Speaker 2: in fact, where he was the quarterback. And it was
- 1:17:49Speaker 2: so beautiful.
- 1:17:49Speaker 3: It was opening in a mountain.
- 1:17:51Speaker 2: The mountain is right up behind the stadium. It's beautiful.
- 1:17:55Speaker 2: The Wasatch mountains right there. Utah is also pretty, but
- 1:17:58Speaker 2: the mountains aren't right, right there at rice cycle stadium.
- 1:18:00Speaker 9: But no, but all three of the stadiums that I've
- 1:18:03Speaker 9: been in, in the state of Utah, I don't know
- 1:18:06Speaker 9: if they planned football around that or something, but they're
- 1:18:08Speaker 9: all gorgeous.
- 1:18:09Speaker 2: Well, all the population is saddled up against the West
- 1:18:11Speaker 2: slope of the Wasatch mountains. I mean, outside of that
- 1:18:14Speaker 2: area of Utah, there's nobody you got to, Arches and
- 1:18:18Speaker 2: Moab and all that down south. Talk about beautiful country.
- 1:18:22Speaker 2: Southern Utah and the national parks that are down there.
- 1:18:25Speaker 2: i went to moab and i couldn't believe it yeah.
- 1:18:28Speaker 9: It's it's unbelievable and i grew up in um forested
- 1:18:31Speaker 9: national parks and state parks i should say and i've
- 1:18:34Speaker 9: been to multiple but uh out here when i was
- 1:18:38Speaker 9: when i first moved out here i was working an
- 1:18:40Speaker 9: nba game uh down in salt lake city and i
- 1:18:44Speaker 9: got flown out there three days earlier all i had
- 1:18:46Speaker 9: to do was go to shoot around a couple days
- 1:18:49Speaker 9: so i had the whole entire day to myself, and
- 1:18:52Speaker 9: I went to Moab just to see it.
- 1:18:55Speaker 11: And I'm like, wow.
- 1:18:56Speaker 3: Okay.
- 1:18:56Speaker 2: All right.
- 1:18:57Speaker 3: Maybe actually plan a trip here.
- 1:19:00Speaker 2: Back to the text line, 49451. BYU plus 10.5 is
- 1:19:02Speaker 2: my factor fiction pick. Text Factor 49451 if you want
- 1:19:04Speaker 2: to win $ 1, 000. Fiction if you don't. 206, who is the, quote,
- 1:19:10Speaker 2: they that pays college athletes? Who makes the decision on
- 1:19:13Speaker 2: pay on the college side? Is there a bonus money
- 1:19:16Speaker 2: left for someone like Elijah if he does really good? Okay,
- 1:19:19Speaker 2: good question. A lot of the money goes through revenue sharing,
- 1:19:23Speaker 2: which comes out of the athletic department's revenues. They have
- 1:19:26Speaker 2: to earmark, this is by now rule, by court rule
- 1:19:29Speaker 2: and by the NCAA's policy, that schools use up to
- 1:19:33Speaker 2: $ 20. 5 million this past year, and it's going to go up,
- 1:19:36Speaker 2: of department money On teams, and they can spend that
- 1:19:39Speaker 2: however they want. They can do 90% of football, which
- 1:19:41Speaker 2: is what most people do, 90%, 95%. They could do 80%
- 1:19:44Speaker 2: on football and 20% on basketball. They can do 8%
- 1:19:47Speaker 2: on basketball. They can do any percentage they want. At
- 1:19:51Speaker 2: the University of Washington, they actually fund their volleyball program
- 1:19:54Speaker 2: and their softball program with revenue sharing because that's how
- 1:19:56Speaker 2: good they are in those sports, and they want to
- 1:19:58Speaker 2: keep it good. At least that's the last I heard
- 1:20:01Speaker 2: when I was– I still teach there, and that's what
- 1:20:03Speaker 2: I'd heard. But the percentage of how much they give
- 1:20:05Speaker 2: to football is up to each school. Then on top
- 1:20:08Speaker 2: of that, the delta and where the haves become the
- 1:20:10Speaker 2: havers is the havest in the Big Ten and the
- 1:20:14Speaker 2: SEC is the NIL money on top of the revenue share,
- 1:20:17Speaker 2: which is a free-for-all still. They said they're going to
- 1:20:19Speaker 2: have a clearinghouse and a bunch of rules. It's not working.
- 1:20:22Speaker 2: It's a free-for-all. And that's where the money is just
- 1:20:25Speaker 2: open to open bidding. So Washington is lagging behind in
- 1:20:29Speaker 2: spending on their teams because they don't have the donors
- 1:20:33Speaker 2: just handing over blank checks like they do in the
- 1:20:35Speaker 2: SEC or at Ohio State in Michigan. That's the problem.
- 1:20:39Speaker 2: There's too many other things to do in Seattle. And
- 1:20:42Speaker 2: people are saying, well, OK, you just had me hit up.
- 1:20:44Speaker 2: You hit me up for four million dollars for DeMond Williams.
- 1:20:47Speaker 2: Now we're 3-3 and Williams has lost three straight. He's
- 1:20:49Speaker 2: not even on the field. You're going to hit me
- 1:20:51Speaker 2: up again for another quarterback in a year or two.
- 1:20:53Speaker 4: I'm out.
- 1:20:54Speaker 2: I'm going to go buy another yacht or I'm going
- 1:20:56Speaker 2: to buy another house in Lake Chelan or up at
- 1:20:59Speaker 2: Whistler or I'm going to give to the Seattle Symphony
- 1:21:01Speaker 2: or whatever. That's the difference between here and Baton Rouge
- 1:21:04Speaker 2: and Tuscaloosa. In Baton Rouge and Tuscaloosa, the boosters are
- 1:21:07Speaker 2: just ATMs. The athletic director and the coach goes, hey,
- 1:21:10Speaker 2: we need another quarterback. Okay, here's another million-dollar check. And
- 1:21:13Speaker 2: that's how LSU buys everybody in Alabama and Florida. That's
- 1:21:16Speaker 2: how it works in that part of the country. Not
- 1:21:19Speaker 2: in Seattle, Washington. And to me, that's the fundamental difference.
- 1:21:22Speaker 2: That Washington's trying to run with those big boys, but
- 1:21:25Speaker 2: they don't have the funding mechanisms like the SEC and
- 1:21:28Speaker 2: the Big Ten schools do. Not to mention the fact
- 1:21:31Speaker 2: that Washington... They still have money, though. Of course, compared
- 1:21:34Speaker 2: to Washington State and Oregon State.
- 1:21:35Speaker 3: Yeah, they have a lot.
- 1:21:36Speaker 2: They're on the half side. That's why they went to
- 1:21:38Speaker 2: the Big Ten, so they could stay on the half side.
- 1:21:40Speaker 2: But they're half of a half because they're only getting
- 1:21:43Speaker 2: half the Big Ten revenue that the rest of the
- 1:21:45Speaker 2: schools are because that was the agreement when they jumped
- 1:21:47Speaker 2: in with Oregon is that you could only get a
- 1:21:50Speaker 2: half share until 2030, through the end of this decade.
- 1:21:54Speaker 2: So they're playing with one hand tied behind their back
- 1:21:57Speaker 2: as far as roster construction and paying rosters. So when
- 1:22:00Speaker 2: you hear Jed Fish complain about we don't have enough money, well,
- 1:22:04Speaker 2: that's because your school joined at half rate. They're getting
- 1:22:08Speaker 2: half the revenue of everybody else, and you're asking the
- 1:22:11Speaker 2: money people, the private donors of the Huskies, to pay
- 1:22:15Speaker 2: the freight.
- 1:22:15Speaker 3: Right, to subsidize.
- 1:22:16Speaker 2: To try to subsidize and make up that delta. And
- 1:22:19Speaker 2: they're saying, wait a minute. We haven't been to a
- 1:22:21Speaker 2: bowl game. Well, a bowl. We haven't been to the
- 1:22:23Speaker 2: college playoff in a few years. Get back to me
- 1:22:25Speaker 2: when you've got a roster worth paying for. That's the
- 1:22:28Speaker 2: yin and the yang of the whole thing.
- 1:22:29Speaker 9: And it's going to continue, and it's not just in
- 1:22:32Speaker 9: our state.
- 1:22:33Speaker 4: Correct.
- 1:22:34Speaker 2: And the line between the haves and the have-nots is
- 1:22:37Speaker 2: going to get thicker because there are a lot of
- 1:22:39Speaker 2: schools and a lot of donors of schools that are
- 1:22:40Speaker 2: going to say, I'm out. No more. I just did
- 1:22:42Speaker 2: this for a quarterback, and now he's gone. That's the summation.
- 1:22:46Speaker 2: It's a little bit cold, but that's just exactly how
- 1:22:48Speaker 2: it's playing down on Montlake from where I sit and
- 1:22:50Speaker 2: what I see. Up next, Ian Furness will tell us
- 1:22:52Speaker 2: what he's got on his show. You've got about seven
- 1:22:54Speaker 2: minutes left. If you want to try factor fiction and
- 1:22:57Speaker 2: win $ 1, 000, BYU plus 10.5 over Notre Dame at home.
- 1:23:01Speaker 2: That's my pick. If you want to win... $ 1, 000 text
- 1:23:04Speaker 2: FACT to 49451. If you don't, text FICTION to 49451.
- 1:23:07Speaker 2: Ian will tell us what he's got on his show
- 1:23:08Speaker 2: next on 93.3 KJRFM. Welcome back. Greg Bell, Justin McIntyre
- 1:23:20Speaker 2: with you. And now Ian Ferencz is with us on
- 1:23:22Speaker 2: 93.3 KJRFM. The window's about to close. I think you
- 1:23:26Speaker 2: might have a minute or two left. Factor Fiction. BYU
- 1:23:29Speaker 2: plus 10.5 at home against Notre Dame. Where do you
- 1:23:31Speaker 2: get a top 10 team, a double-digit underdog?
- 1:23:35Speaker 4: I like that.
- 1:23:36Speaker 2: I don't want that pick. There's still the over-under there.
- 1:23:39Speaker 2: I hate doing those.
- 1:23:42Speaker 3: I never do that either.
- 1:23:43Speaker 2: From the text line, someone asked where I'm reffing this weekend.
- 1:23:46Speaker 2: I've got Liberty against Chris Carson's Redmond team. Liberty High School.
- 1:23:52Speaker 2: My man, Steve Vallick. Yes, Steve Vallick. Have you been
- 1:23:54Speaker 2: to a game out there?
- 1:23:55Speaker 7: No.
- 1:23:56Speaker 2: I've been to a sub-JV game there. The Is it
- 1:23:59Speaker 2: Friday night?
- 1:23:59Speaker 4: It's at Liberty.
- 1:24:00Speaker 2: Is it Friday night? Friday night, 7 o'clock. I think
- 1:24:03Speaker 2: one of the better atmospheres in baseball football.
- 1:24:06Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:24:06Speaker 2: And I think it's Liberty's home. I know it's Liberty's homecoming,
- 1:24:08Speaker 2: so that'll be fun. Take care of my guy, Valak,
- 1:24:10Speaker 2: will you? I will. He's a great man. He sounds
- 1:24:12Speaker 2: like he doesn't need to be taken care of. He
- 1:24:13Speaker 2: does pretty well on his own.
- 1:24:14Speaker 12: He does well. He runs a great program. And the
- 1:24:18Speaker 12: Friday night lights at Liberty High School are awesome.
- 1:24:21Speaker 2: Oh, sweet. I'm fired up. They are awesome. And Liberty's
- 1:24:25Speaker 2: got a really good team. Don't go hungry.
- 1:24:27Speaker 12: Because they have a great, like they got the burgers
- 1:24:29Speaker 12: cooking and it just, you walk.
- 1:24:31Speaker 2: In and you're like, oh, this is awesome. Yeah, it's fantastic. Oh,
- 1:24:33Speaker 2: that's cool.
- 1:24:34Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:24:34Speaker 2: My kid was a ball boy for him for many years.
- 1:24:37Speaker 2: It was fun.
- 1:24:37Speaker 12: Yeah, it was, yeah, it was, I love this program.
- 1:24:41Speaker 12: I love what he stands for. It's everything that high
- 1:24:43Speaker 12: school football should be. You know, he's a great man, man.
- 1:24:46Speaker 2: That's awesome.
- 1:24:47Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:24:47Speaker 2: Great to hear. I'll be looking forward to meeting him
- 1:24:50Speaker 2: and Andy Miller and I are going to be doing
- 1:24:51Speaker 2: that game with a five-man crew out at Liberty High School. Good,
- 1:24:54Speaker 2: good deal. And they're good this year? They're really good.
- 1:24:56Speaker 2: They have one loss. They look like they're ahead of
- 1:24:58Speaker 2: the players. The Redmonds won win, so that would be
- 1:25:00Speaker 2: a big upset for them.
- 1:25:01Speaker 12: We had one of the best games we did on
- 1:25:03Speaker 12: KJR in one of the best games we did in
- 1:25:08Speaker 12: terms of play-by-play when we were doing semifinals and finals
- 1:25:11Speaker 12: back in the day at the Tacoma Dome. And Valek's
- 1:25:14Speaker 12: team went down to the Tacoma Dome, and it was
- 1:25:18Speaker 12: like the Friday after Thanksgiving. And they played Bellevue, I
- 1:25:22Speaker 12: believe it was, and beat them on a last-second finish.
- 1:25:25Speaker 12: 50-yard field goal in the dome.
- 1:25:26Speaker 14: Wow.
- 1:25:27Speaker 12: And the crazy thing was, A, I mean, you're beating
- 1:25:30Speaker 12: that team. But two, I think they lost to them
- 1:25:34Speaker 12: earlier in the year, but was it Bellevue or no, somebody,
- 1:25:36Speaker 12: maybe it was Linden or somebody because I think they
- 1:25:39Speaker 12: were still 2A. But nevertheless, the kicker, like he didn't
- 1:25:42Speaker 12: have a kicker. And Steve knew he needed a kicker.
- 1:25:46Speaker 12: And he went and talked to a kid, you know,
- 1:25:48Speaker 12: because this boy's soccer is in the spring. And he
- 1:25:51Speaker 12: found a kid that would kick. And I had a
- 1:25:53Speaker 12: few guys out there kick, and this guy was really good.
- 1:25:55Speaker 12: And his parents wanted no part of football.
- 1:25:58Speaker 4: None.
- 1:25:58Speaker 12: Sounds like my wife. And he said, I promise. He
- 1:26:03Speaker 12: doesn't have to tackle. He won't have to hit. Nothing
- 1:26:05Speaker 12: like that. And then the kid ended up hitting an
- 1:26:07Speaker 12: unbelievable field goal to win it. They went to the
- 1:26:10Speaker 12: championship game, and they lost to Abe Lucas- Archbishop Murphy.
- 1:26:16Speaker 12: So that would have been 2A.
- 1:26:17Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:26:18Speaker 12: And it was, is it Kyler Gordon?
- 1:26:21Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:26:22Speaker 12: Like they had dudes. They had two NFL players on
- 1:26:24Speaker 12: their team. A little hard to beat them, but it
- 1:26:26Speaker 12: was phenomenal.
- 1:26:26Speaker 4: So yeah. Yeah.
- 1:26:27Speaker 2: Fun stuff. Abe Lucas just gave back to his school,
- 1:26:29Speaker 2: Archbishop Murphy. They have a sports performance and nutrition center
- 1:26:32Speaker 2: and weight room and whatnot.
- 1:26:33Speaker 4: Nice.
- 1:26:34Speaker 2: Named him as his family.
- 1:26:35Speaker 4: Very nice.
- 1:26:35Speaker 2: He's still got a sister that goes there.
- 1:26:37Speaker 4: Oh, really?
- 1:26:37Speaker 2: He told me.
- 1:26:38Speaker 9: Oh, good.
- 1:26:38Speaker 2: I haven't written that story yet.
- 1:26:39Speaker 4: Well.
- 1:26:40Speaker 2: I'm not going to write it for what I was
- 1:26:41Speaker 2: going to write it for. I'll be writing for the
- 1:26:43Speaker 2: KJR website. KJR website, perfect. We're pumping that up. Tomorrow night,
- 1:26:46Speaker 2: I'll be writing from Denver on the KJR website, 923KJR.
- 1:26:48Speaker 11: Com.
- 1:26:48Speaker 2: Did you figure out how to get into it yet? Yes,
- 1:26:50Speaker 2: finally got that up. Let me ask you real quick.
- 1:26:53Speaker 2: Matty Beneers last night impressed the hell out of me
- 1:26:54Speaker 2: with forechecking, screening on Ota Vinen's first career goal. And
- 1:26:59Speaker 2: you're saying you think this is a buy-in. Yeah, I
- 1:27:01Speaker 2: think it's a total buy-in.
- 1:27:02Speaker 12: But it's also Beneers being a great all-around player. Beneers
- 1:27:04Speaker 12: is a really good player. He's not an 80-point guy.
- 1:27:08Speaker 12: Which is what guys want. People want to see a
- 1:27:10Speaker 12: top pick, right? You just need good players sometimes. He's
- 1:27:13Speaker 12: a really good player. He's terrific on the four check.
- 1:27:16Speaker 12: Everyone's paying the price. If you don't pay the price,
- 1:27:18Speaker 12: you don't go to the front of the net, you
- 1:27:20Speaker 12: don't stick up for your teammates, and you don't buy
- 1:27:22Speaker 12: into what Lane's selling, then you're not going to be
- 1:27:24Speaker 12: long for this world.
- 1:27:25Speaker 2: And the proof is the record right now. 5-2 heading
- 1:27:28Speaker 2: to Tampa tomorrow. What do you got on the show today?
- 1:27:31Speaker 2: We're busy. We're jammed.
- 1:27:31Speaker 12: We've got our friend Stuart Mandel will join us early on,
- 1:27:34Speaker 12: so we'll get to that. Our Cougs are with us
- 1:27:37Speaker 12: as well today. I was not going to let them
- 1:27:41Speaker 12: go the week after what happened last week. I've had
- 1:27:43Speaker 12: a lot of, oh, I want to get here from Alex. Yeah,
- 1:27:44Speaker 12: quarterback change. We'll get to all that.
- 1:27:46Speaker 2: Ask him why the Pitt guy's not playing.
- 1:27:48Speaker 4: Okay.
- 1:27:49Speaker 2: And, oh, Duggar? He can't throw. That's a simple answer.
- 1:27:51Speaker 2: He can't throw.
- 1:27:53Speaker 12: It's a quarterback. You're not running Butch Contreras' offense. If
- 1:27:57Speaker 12: he was at Bellevue back in the day with Butch,
- 1:27:58Speaker 12: he'd be fine. He ain't running Butch's offense.
- 1:28:01Speaker 2: No single wings? No double wings?
