- 0:05Speaker 1: Good morning, good morning, good morning, and welcome, welcome, welcome.
- 0:09Speaker 1: It's time now for one on one with the pro
- 0:11Speaker 1: and we have Miss Shelley Costry in here with us today.
- 0:15Speaker 1: And today we'll be talking about moving closer to the
- 0:17Speaker 1: grandchildren and is it the right move? Hmm. This is
- 0:22Speaker 1: where we are going to provide a little she is
- 0:24Speaker 1: not me, provide some trusted guidance and practical resources to
- 0:28Speaker 1: help our seniors and their families navigate through life transitions
- 0:33Speaker 1: with confidence. So we've got a lot of retirees who
- 0:38Speaker 1: are dreaming of spending a little bit more time with
- 0:40Speaker 1: the family.
- 0:40Speaker 2: But how's that going to look? You know, is it
- 0:42Speaker 2: a good idea to get close to the grand kids?
- 0:44Speaker 2: I just talked to it.
- 0:46Speaker 3: I guess it depends, you know. Some people want to
- 0:49Speaker 3: move close, some people want to move further. No, you know,
- 0:52Speaker 3: I will say this, Tom, I take it for granted
- 0:55Speaker 3: because I'm blessed and fortunate enough that all six of
- 0:58Speaker 3: my grandchildren live very close to me, and I love it.
- 1:01Speaker 3: But we are starting to see this a lot. Jamie
- 1:03Speaker 3: and I were talking about it the other day about
- 1:05Speaker 3: how many people were seeing retire and they're wanting to
- 1:08Speaker 3: move and get closer to their grandchildren. They don't. You
- 1:12Speaker 3: don't want to miss those times. Time is precious and
- 1:15Speaker 3: it can go really really quickly. So it is.
- 1:17Speaker 2: I talked to mine yesterday. There are three.
- 1:20Speaker 1: They were little boys, but on the phone they had Yeah,
- 1:25Speaker 1: two years.
- 1:25Speaker 3: I can't believe my oldest turned twelve, So I almost
- 1:28Speaker 3: it's going to happen. Yes, have a teenager and I
- 1:31Speaker 3: I mean it seems like just yesterday.
- 1:34Speaker 2: Oh myke.
- 1:34Speaker 1: You know, Shelley is with the senior real estate specialist
- 1:39Speaker 1: with cost Team here. She specializes in everything that we
- 1:43Speaker 1: are talking about today.
- 1:45Speaker 2: So why so many grandparents are moving? Well, there's lots
- 1:50Speaker 2: of reasons to.
- 1:50Speaker 3: Move, yes. So what we're finding Toms is we've talked
- 1:54Speaker 3: a lot about about about parents being in seniors and
- 1:58Speaker 3: helping them make that transition. But we also wanted to
- 2:01Speaker 3: touch base on when you're ready to retire, right you
- 2:03Speaker 3: have kids out of the house, you're empty nester, so
- 2:06Speaker 3: you want to downsize. We're seeing a lot of that
- 2:09Speaker 3: and is at the right time. And the market is
- 2:12Speaker 3: really picked up the last couple of weeks. It's really
- 2:14Speaker 3: picked up. It's crazy and it's where do you want
- 2:18Speaker 3: to go? So it really is. I want to be
- 2:20Speaker 3: closer to the grandkids, but we also don't want you
- 2:23Speaker 3: to overlook what is else is in there for me,
- 2:25Speaker 3: because we all know our grandkids are. They're busy, right,
- 2:30Speaker 3: they got they have lives, they have friends, they get
- 2:34Speaker 3: involved with teams, and so what else is there? I
- 2:37Speaker 3: want to be close to them, and I want to
- 2:39Speaker 3: be able to participate in their functions and their activities.
- 2:42Speaker 3: But you also want to make sure that you're picking
- 2:45Speaker 3: a community that meets your needs to.
- 2:48Speaker 1: That's very very important. Sounds like this is more about
- 2:52Speaker 1: lifestyle than not anything.
- 2:54Speaker 2: Yes, so wow, that's great.
- 2:56Speaker 1: Now, once again, when it comes to looking to get
- 3:00Speaker 1: into that next house, we're looking at a variety of
- 3:03Speaker 1: different things. So once again we have to ask yourself
- 3:09Speaker 1: a few questions, and we did. What does retirement look like? Yeah,
- 3:12Speaker 1: and it's different for everyone. Now, questions we're going to
- 3:15Speaker 1: ask before making the move. What are some of the
- 3:18Speaker 1: most important questions families should consider before making such a
- 3:23Speaker 1: big decision as this.
- 3:26Speaker 3: Well, I think that it's going to be you want
- 3:29Speaker 3: to pick the community as well, right, you want to
- 3:32Speaker 3: pick the community, And obviously I love Bartlesville and we
- 3:37Speaker 3: are very attractive to many because we have we are small,
- 3:40Speaker 3: so we have that small town phil but we also
- 3:43Speaker 3: have such diversity. We have the you know, ok mos art,
- 3:47Speaker 3: we have you know, the woolwarks. We have so much
- 3:49Speaker 3: that most communities don't have the theater, all of those things.
- 3:54Speaker 3: And so am I going to volunteer? What's retirement look like? Right?
- 3:57Speaker 3: Retirement sounds great? It doesn't to me. People ask me
- 4:01Speaker 3: all the time, when are you going to retire? And
- 4:02Speaker 3: I'm like, I don't realtors, we just die, We never retire.
- 4:06Speaker 3: But what does that look like? Because I have a
- 4:08Speaker 3: lot of conversations song where it's well, now what do
- 4:11Speaker 3: I do? I'm bored? And you think you're going to
- 4:14Speaker 3: move and be closer to the kids, and you want
- 4:16Speaker 3: to do that, But there's so much more to it
- 4:18Speaker 3: than that. So where am I going to volunteer? What
- 4:21Speaker 3: do I want? Are their activities around? Are their seniors?
- 4:24Speaker 3: Are their senior you know, like we have the fifty
- 4:27Speaker 3: five plus? Are there things that I can do outside
- 4:31Speaker 3: of Do I like to golf? What do I want
- 4:34Speaker 3: to do in my pastime that doesn't involve just my
- 4:36Speaker 3: family and my kids?
- 4:37Speaker 2: Wow, that's a lot to consider. And you better consider
- 4:41Speaker 2: at all.
- 4:42Speaker 1: Yes, I'm telling you so many people have lived in
- 4:46Speaker 1: the same home for decades. I mean, how many times
- 4:49Speaker 1: have we visited our friends' parents and you want, boy,
- 4:53Speaker 1: sure remember this when I was five and they've been
- 4:56Speaker 1: there a long time.
- 4:57Speaker 2: So it's that emotional attachment.
- 4:59Speaker 3: There is a b huge emotional attachment and making that
- 5:02Speaker 3: decision in that move is a hard one. We were
- 5:05Speaker 3: here to kind of help guide you through that, and
- 5:07Speaker 3: most of the time it's people don't want to take
- 5:10Speaker 3: on that. We procrastinate. I don't look, I've been here.
- 5:13Speaker 3: I would hate to think the thought of me packing
- 5:16Speaker 3: up my home and moving and all of the stuff
- 5:18Speaker 3: I've accumulated in twenty some years. It's easy to accumulate
- 5:21Speaker 3: that in just a few years. But you really want
- 5:24Speaker 3: to think, is this you want to think, you know,
- 5:27Speaker 3: long term? Am I going to be here the upkeep
- 5:31Speaker 3: of it? Do I want to travel? Do I want
- 5:33Speaker 3: to go and live next to my grandkids and then?
- 5:35Speaker 3: But I also want to travel and that might not
- 5:38Speaker 3: be my forever home there, right, So you always want
- 5:41Speaker 3: to be thinking. In any real estate, we always want
- 5:43Speaker 3: you to think reseale, you know, so you want to
- 5:46Speaker 3: look again at the areas. What is there to do?
- 5:49Speaker 3: Because I hear a lot of retired people say I'm bored.
- 5:54Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm bored.
- 5:56Speaker 3: I don't have anything to do. You know, I don't
- 5:58Speaker 3: miss working, but I miss having something to do. What
- 6:02Speaker 3: am I going to get up and occupy my time with?
- 6:04Speaker 3: Are there? Bridge clubs? Are there? Cars? Are there? What
- 6:07Speaker 3: you know? In our communities? What is there for me
- 6:10Speaker 3: to get involved in? So I would recommend obviously go
- 6:13Speaker 3: be where the kids are, but get to know people,
- 6:15Speaker 3: visit the community, visit the activities that you like, and
- 6:19Speaker 3: think big picture.
- 6:21Speaker 1: And also, you're not leaving your memories behind when you
- 6:24Speaker 1: leave that that house.
- 6:25Speaker 3: No, you're not leaving them. You're never leaving them. And
- 6:28Speaker 3: you're going to take those with you and those you
- 6:30Speaker 3: will always carry with you. And you're going to yes,
- 6:34Speaker 3: take but don't be afraid to hold onto that. To
- 6:38Speaker 3: make that, to make that leap, you're going to create
- 6:40Speaker 3: new memories and your next journey.
- 6:42Speaker 1: Well, speaking of holding on, you never recommend that someone
- 6:45Speaker 1: makes a rash decision. Always consider, like we've been talking
- 6:49Speaker 1: about yes for months now.
- 6:51Speaker 3: Yes, you're never going to see me go into a
- 6:53Speaker 3: home and say, oh, we want to move close to
- 6:55Speaker 3: the grandkids. I'm going to always ask those questions because
- 6:58Speaker 3: what I don't want and I have seen, is people
- 7:01Speaker 3: regret moving right because they regret I hear, well, the
- 7:05Speaker 3: family just doesn't have as much time as I thought,
- 7:09Speaker 3: or you know, I don't. There's not really a lot
- 7:11Speaker 3: here for me to do outside of my kids. So
- 7:14Speaker 3: think about that. What am I going to miss here?
- 7:16Speaker 3: What do I really love about where I'm at before
- 7:19Speaker 3: you decide to make that move? And am I going
- 7:21Speaker 3: to be able to replace it? Am I going to
- 7:23Speaker 3: gain that in another aspect of my life? Wherever I go? Right,
- 7:28Speaker 3: you really want to think big picture and we're going
- 7:30Speaker 3: to help walk you through that.
- 7:32Speaker 2: Well, that's good. It's always nice to know you have Yes.
- 7:34Speaker 3: You always want to write down everything, the pros and
- 7:36Speaker 3: the cons, what's great about it, what isn't And it
- 7:39Speaker 3: may be there's a neighborhood that's thirty minutes an hour
- 7:42Speaker 3: away that I can still go to all my grandkids
- 7:45Speaker 3: games and activities and things like that and be a
- 7:49Speaker 3: part of their life. But this down here may have
- 7:51Speaker 3: more that fits me and my needs and what we're
- 7:54Speaker 3: going to do on a day to day.
- 7:55Speaker 2: Basis keeping it hole. I like that choosing the write home.
- 8:00Speaker 1: When someone decides to relocate, what should they be looking
- 8:04Speaker 1: for in that new home?
- 8:06Speaker 3: Well, the new home is again we're going to ask
- 8:08Speaker 3: them to write down what are the things they love
- 8:11Speaker 3: about their home? And you need this much space? Are
- 8:14Speaker 3: you really going to have family come and stay with you?
- 8:17Speaker 1: What?
- 8:17Speaker 3: We want you to be realistic. We don't ever want
- 8:20Speaker 3: anybody to be married to a home. And obviously at
- 8:22Speaker 3: that they're retiring, so they're not going to be tied
- 8:25Speaker 3: to a mortgage. But you want them to be able
- 8:27Speaker 3: to pack up and move if they want to go,
- 8:29Speaker 3: or not move back up and travel if that's what
- 8:31Speaker 3: they want to do. We want you to think, you know, simpler, right,
- 8:36Speaker 3: We want you to think simpler.
- 8:38Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 8:38Speaker 1: Let's the older I get, the more I really hate complication.
- 8:43Speaker 3: Yeah right, And we want you to plan for that
- 8:45Speaker 3: next stage because and this is a great I'm not
- 8:48Speaker 3: going to touch base, but I was doing a inspection
- 8:52Speaker 3: last Friday for a buyer. Yeah, and I was with
- 8:55Speaker 3: the seller, spent three hours with him, and not my
- 8:58Speaker 3: client was another client, the realtor who's also the seller,
- 9:01Speaker 3: was in Florida. We left thirty minutes later, the client
- 9:05Speaker 3: was gone like past he just passed away heart attack,
- 9:10Speaker 3: health issues.
- 9:11Speaker 1: Wow.
- 9:11Speaker 3: And he was moving to Florida to be closer to
- 9:13Speaker 3: his to be with his They were moving closer to
- 9:16Speaker 3: be closer to family. So you want to think, what
- 9:19Speaker 3: if that happens. Am I leaving my family where they
- 9:23Speaker 3: know what my intentions are? They are going to be
- 9:26Speaker 3: able to come in And you want to think, not
- 9:28Speaker 3: just about you, but how is this going to affect
- 9:31Speaker 3: the rest of my family if something God forbid should
- 9:33Speaker 3: happen to me?
- 9:34Speaker 2: Once again, Shelley, as you've always said, the big.
- 9:36Speaker 3: Picture, look at the big picture.
- 9:38Speaker 1: You got to take it all in. I imagine it's also
- 9:41Speaker 1: important to have realistic expectations. And we've been talking about Man,
- 9:47Speaker 1: he knows a little bit too. Yeah, what's the real deal.
- 9:50Speaker 3: Well, so the biggest part is I want to downsize
- 9:53Speaker 3: and they have a really hard time with that.
- 9:56Speaker 1: Right.
- 9:56Speaker 3: Most of the time, it's getting rid of the of
- 10:01Speaker 3: of the items and it's okay, do I have a
- 10:03Speaker 3: two story home? Now? I'm good with it. Now I'm sixty,
- 10:06Speaker 3: I'm good with it.
- 10:06Speaker 1: Now?
- 10:06Speaker 3: Am I going to be good with two stories? Am
- 10:08Speaker 3: I ever going to go upstairs or do I just
- 10:11Speaker 3: want a one level? Again? We want you to be realistic.
- 10:15Speaker 3: Am I close to healthcare? You know? I mean I
- 10:18Speaker 3: know mentally I still feel like I'm in my thirties,
- 10:20Speaker 3: but sixty. When I get up every morning, I can
- 10:22Speaker 3: tell I'm in my sixties.
- 10:24Speaker 1: Right.
- 10:24Speaker 3: I can't stay when my kids remind me of that,
- 10:27Speaker 3: But you know it's true. You just want to be
- 10:31Speaker 3: realistic and think logistically about it.
- 10:34Speaker 2: Indeed, you do advice for adult children.
- 10:38Speaker 1: So if you've got mom and dad still around, folks,
- 10:42Speaker 1: pay attention. Okay, what advice would you give the adult
- 10:45Speaker 1: children whose parents are considering a.
- 10:47Speaker 3: Closer move kind of the same thing that I told you.
- 10:51Speaker 3: It's be very honest with them about what your lives
- 10:56Speaker 3: look like, right, what does my life look like? Where
- 10:59Speaker 3: do where do they fit into your life? And think
- 11:04Speaker 3: about it for them long term as well, And then
- 11:09Speaker 3: just be as realistic and as open as you can
- 11:12Speaker 3: and think about am I close to healthcare? What if
- 11:15Speaker 3: something God forbid? What happen to my family? Know all
- 11:18Speaker 3: of those options, just like we talk on the show,
- 11:21Speaker 3: you know, on all of our shows, Know all of
- 11:23Speaker 3: your health care options if something should happen and be
- 11:26Speaker 3: prepared have those conversations with them. Again, this gentleman didn't
- 11:30Speaker 3: have a will, didn't have a trust, didn't have anything.
- 11:33Speaker 3: Do you have that because you don't want that burden
- 11:36Speaker 3: and they don't want you to have that burden. They
- 11:38Speaker 3: just don't know what they don't know.
- 11:40Speaker 1: It's true, It's true. So, Shelley, is that we begin
- 11:44Speaker 1: to wrap up. What's one piece of advice you'd like
- 11:47Speaker 1: to leave our listeners with today?
- 11:49Speaker 3: I want you just to be thinking future. It sneaks
- 11:52Speaker 3: up on you really quickly. I want you to be thinking,
- 11:57Speaker 3: what do I want my future to look like? When
- 11:59Speaker 3: I reach hire? Where do I want to go? What
- 12:02Speaker 3: does that look like for me? Am I going to
- 12:05Speaker 3: be in a gated safe community because I'm going to
- 12:07Speaker 3: travel all the time? Am I clothes? To healthcare? And
- 12:11Speaker 3: what does that look like for me? I want I
- 12:15Speaker 3: want to see the big picture and I want to
- 12:16Speaker 3: see people have conversations with family members and everybody be
- 12:20Speaker 3: on the same page. I see it happen too much
- 12:22Speaker 3: where families get torn apart over things that a simple
- 12:25Speaker 3: conversation could have helped.
- 12:27Speaker 2: Amen to that. Amen to that. So if you're.
- 12:30Speaker 1: Considering downsizing, relocating, or simply exploring your options. Shelley Coster
- 12:35Speaker 1: and the Coster.

- 12:38Speaker 2: that we've been talking about.

- 12:44Speaker 1: future house.
