- 0:00This is a Tabernacle tidbit, a bite sized Tabernacle talk of 5
- 0:05minutes or less to help you get through your day when you only
- 0:09have a little bit of time. We hope this helps you to know
- 0:11Christ, groan His Word, and show His love to others.
- 0:14Let's get started. Welcome back to Tabernacle
- 0:18Tidbits. Today we are in Second Timothy
- 0:20chapter 4 and verse #20 There are only two more verses left in
- 0:26Second Timothy and today's verse, Paul is, if you will,
- 0:31he's saying some of his like final goodbyes, some people that
- 0:35he wants Timothy to say hi to from him.
- 0:39And so he says in verse #20 Erastus has remained at Corinth.
- 0:44I left Trophimus sick at my letus.
- 0:48Erastus has remained at Corinth. I left Trophimus sick at my
- 0:52elitis. All right, you might say, what
- 0:54in the world? How?
- 0:55How are we going to get anything out of this today?
- 0:57Brian, I promise you there's some good things to know.
- 1:00So Erastus was a companion of Pauls.
- 1:03He was also someone that traveled with Timothy, and so he
- 1:09would have been someone that Timothy would have cared about.
- 1:11He would have wanted to know, you know, if Timothy arrives
- 1:14there in Rome and he's wondering like, OK, what happened to
- 1:17Erastus? Knowing that there were some
- 1:19people that Paul had sent to various locations, like he sent
- 1:22Titus to Dalmatia. There were some people that
- 1:25abandoned Paul, like Phagellis and Homogenes and Demas, and so
- 1:30he would have cared about Erastus.
- 1:33And I think as Christians, one of the really important things
- 1:37that we can do, especially in a local church context, is care
- 1:41about the people who are not there, care about the people
- 1:47that are not there. This requires you to do a couple
- 1:50of things. Number one, it means that church
- 1:53has to be more for you than just an hour on Sunday or just an
- 2:00hour on Sunday. In your small group, you
- 2:02actually have to take some time to get to know someone else
- 2:06within the church. You have to share a meal with
- 2:09someone or you have to hang out with them, grab coffee, grab
- 2:13tea. You have to have a game that you
- 2:17you got to do something that you are getting together with other
- 2:21people within your church and you're getting to know them.
- 2:25That that way when they are gone, when they're on vacation,
- 2:27when they're sick, when they're going through a struggle in
- 2:29their life and maybe they don't feel like they can come to
- 2:32church, that you would be there for them, that you would
- 2:36recognize, OK, they're not there.
- 2:38So I'm going to reach out with a phone call.
- 2:39I'm going to reach out with a text that is born out of
- 2:43relationship. This is something that, you
- 2:46know, as a pastor, myself and the other elders at Tabernacle,
- 2:50we do every single Sunday. I, I take attendance and, and I,
- 2:55I actually have written in a gigantic spreadsheet every
- 2:59person that has attended Tabernacle over the last, oh,
- 3:03it's been probably like 9 or 10 months now.
- 3:06And so I know every person. And every Sunday, I, I send an
- 3:08e-mail to the elders saying, all right, here's everyone that was
- 3:11here today. Here's all of the members that
- 3:13were missing. And we've got our, our members
- 3:16kind of divvied up between our elders.
- 3:18So that way, you know, it's kind of a manageable amount for us to
- 3:21contact and, and let them know, Hey, are you doing OK?
- 3:26We've been praying for you. Is there anything that we can do
- 3:29for you? All that kind of stuff.
- 3:32But it means even more when it comes from our brothers and
- 3:35sisters, not just, if you will, from our spiritual fathers, not
- 3:39just from our pastors or deacons or something.
- 3:42It means even more when it comes from our brothers and sisters.
- 3:45So that's the first thing. Erastus has remained at Corinth
- 3:48that he says, Timothy, you know this person, you love this
- 3:51person, so I want to let you know where he's at.
- 3:53But then secondly, he says, I left Trophimus sick at Myletus.
- 3:58Now, Trophimus was one that we first interacted with in Acts 20
- 4:04and he would be a He was actually technically the person
- 4:08that was the main reason for Paul getting arrested initially
- 4:14in Jerusalem, that the Jewish leaders thought that Paul had
- 4:19brought Trophimus, a Greek into the into the temple there in
- 4:27Jerusalem. And they said he brought a
- 4:28Gentile into the temple. And so they were super irate and
- 4:31it ended up in Paul getting arrested and then now he's in
- 4:34room. So that's just a cool little
- 4:35sidebar, but I want us to notice this.
- 4:38He says, I left Trophimus sick at my leaders.
- 4:41There are two main interpretations on spiritual
- 4:46gifts. The one form says that every
- 4:50spiritual gift that God ever gave to anybody of believers
- 4:55still exist today and God regularly still gives it to
- 5:00believers. That would be a what would be
- 5:03called a charismatic or a continuationist theology.
- 5:08There is another view that would say there were specific gifts,
- 5:14specific miraculous gifts that God gave to the church during
- 5:18the time that the Scriptures had not yet fully been written.
- 5:22The New Testament was not written yet.
- 5:24And so these miraculous gifts verified the message that the
- 5:30believers were preaching and they couldn't say here, look at
- 5:34what Scripture says. Look at what, look at what God's
- 5:38Word says. They had to go by, OK, trust me,
- 5:41because I am now doing this action.
- 5:44And Paul in his, in his ministry several times does operate with
- 5:53these spectacular spiritual gifts, namely that people are
- 5:57healed. Sometimes this even happens that
- 5:59people touch Paul's handkerchief and they are healed.
- 6:04But here this gift that Paul once had, he no longer has.
- 6:10It was not a once and forever gift, not even within the
- 6:14lifetime of the apostles. So here that Paul had to leave
- 6:18Trophimus sick at my latest meant that he did not retain
- 6:23this gift of healing for all time.
- 6:26So this would at least inform that conversation of should we
- 6:30expect the ability to be able to on command heal people, or to
- 6:36speak or understand languages that we have never learned?
- 6:41Or should we expect to be able to, you know, any other kind of
- 6:46miraculous gift, Should we expect to be able to just do
- 6:49that on demand as a result of a specific spiritual gifting?
- 6:55And the answer is no. All right, I went way too long
- 6:59for a Tabernacle tidbit, but thank you for sticking in.
- 7:02Let's love people. Let's care for people.
- 7:05And I'll see you next episode.
