- 0:27tennessee after christmas everybody's like
- 0:30well winter's over and all of a sudden
- 0:34it's supposed to be like we're in the
- 0:36thick of winter i mean like we truly
- 0:37are and
- 0:39Or is that just a,
- 0:40is that a me thing or is that,
- 0:41I feel like everybody thinks it's supposed
- 0:43to start inching up and look,
- 0:44I used to love this time of year.
- 0:47I used to love cold.
- 0:50I used to love to be out in
- 0:51it.
- 0:54The older I get.
- 0:58if it is not and sunny i don't
- 1:00really like it my mother's car did not
- 1:03leave the driveway till today and which i
- 1:07mean fine i'm glad that the house was
- 1:10warm everything was taken care of but yeah
- 1:12yeah she's like i got nowhere to go
- 1:15Look, it's a tough time of year.
- 1:18It's cold.
- 1:19It's dark, dreary, snowy, rainy, icy,
- 1:21all the things.
- 1:23It is right now.
- 1:24Y'all forgive me today.
- 1:25I'm a little bit under the weather,
- 1:26but I couldn't miss a day with y'all.
- 1:30Take a quick second and give a shout
- 1:32out to our primary technology sponsor,
- 1:34Toast,
- 1:36partnering with us here and at the
- 1:37restaurant,
- 1:38helping us bringing undeniable hospitality
- 1:40to all people we encounter every single
- 1:43day.
- 1:43We thank you very much.
- 1:45And look,
- 1:46we got a lot of cool things going
- 1:48on, though.
- 1:49We got in March,
- 1:51we got a crawfish boil with Minutes
- 1:54Wisely.
- 1:55Yep.
- 1:55That's going to be a lot of fun.
- 1:58I'm working on a Veterans Day parade for
- 2:01the end of the year.
- 2:02That's going to be a lot of fun.
- 2:05When you say that,
- 2:06like that doesn't even register in my mind
- 2:08because it's in November.
- 2:09Yeah.
- 2:09But these events take time.
- 2:12I get that.
- 2:13I know that some of these events around
- 2:14town or just like even just in general,
- 2:19the moment an event ends,
- 2:20people start playing the next year.
- 2:21Oh yeah.
- 2:22Because it does involve so much,
- 2:24especially the bigger, the larger,
- 2:25you know,
- 2:26I can't imagine what it takes to put
- 2:27on something.
- 2:27I started,
- 2:28I literally started working on it in
- 2:29October.
- 2:29Right.
- 2:30for the following year.
- 2:32And I can't imagine what something like
- 2:33Bonnaroo does.
- 2:34We've got that many acts,
- 2:36that many stages, that many, you know,
- 2:37just the coordination of it all.
- 2:39It's like when we were talking with Amy
- 2:41at Seventeen Street, you know,
- 2:43they work on their barbecue comp all year
- 2:46round.
- 2:46Absolutely.
- 2:46You know,
- 2:47as soon as they get done with one,
- 2:48they start the next one.
- 2:49What a wild concept.
- 2:50I mean, it's crazy.
- 2:51But, you know, speaking of barbecue comps,
- 2:53we got a barbecue comp coming up pretty
- 2:56soon.
- 2:57About six weeks out?
- 2:58Seven weeks out?
- 2:58Something like that?
- 2:59Yeah.
- 3:00so you ready i'm looking forward to it
- 3:02i've got it marked out on the calendar
- 3:04i am yes that's a full week for
- 3:07me i'll be out of town the first
- 3:09part of that week i come home for
- 3:11a couple days and then we got a
- 3:13little competition thing going on and i
- 3:15put it on the calendar and the wife
- 3:17kind of looked at that looked at me
- 3:18and she's like what is that and i
- 3:20was like it's a full week that's what
- 3:22that is yeah
- 3:25So I don't know if that's the outcome
- 3:26she thought I was going to have,
- 3:27but that's where I was with it.
- 3:29So I'll update you a little bit.
- 3:32I have a phone call with a good
- 3:35friend of ours, Mr. Deuce Raymond.
- 3:38Yeah.
- 3:40We're going to chat it up a little
- 3:41bit.
- 3:42Love it.
- 3:43Get a little advice.
- 3:47Thinking it might help a little bit.
- 3:49I've never been in a competition.
- 3:50I've never even attended one.
- 3:52I've been in a few.
- 3:52I will say this.
- 3:54hadn't placed very well in it.
- 3:57The, everything that I read about it,
- 4:00everything that I look at, it literally,
- 4:05it almost just feels like a crap shoot,
- 4:07but you still prepare for the crap shoot.
- 4:09I don't even know if that makes sense,
- 4:11but like it, it really,
- 4:12it reads awkwardly, like for me,
- 4:14for all the stuff that I've tried to
- 4:16get some info on a different,
- 4:17and maybe it's just my lack of having
- 4:19been there and not having my feet wet,
- 4:21so to speak.
- 4:21Some of it,
- 4:22I will tell you from the experience that
- 4:24I've had, some of it is luck.
- 4:27Sure.
- 4:28Because you were going to have a hundred
- 4:31plus professional teams surrounding us.
- 4:36Some of these people do it for a
- 4:38living, right?
- 4:39They don't have restaurants, right?
- 4:41They don't have food trucks.
- 4:43They cook competition barbecue all year
- 4:45round.
- 4:46That's what they do for a job.
- 4:49how often are they cooking every weekend
- 4:53really like I mean there's a season right
- 4:56but I mean is it is it legitimate
- 4:58to say forty forty five weeks out of
- 5:00the year yeah yeah golly yeah like there's
- 5:04guys out there that do that I'm impressed
- 5:08and it's nothing now I will tell you
- 5:10I've had some of
- 5:15competitor's barbecue and in comps and and
- 5:18you take a bite of something and you
- 5:20and it's phenomenal even the stuff that
- 5:22sucks is phenomenal and you're gonna go
- 5:26how did that not do well that was
- 5:27delicious but i mean you've tried to
- 5:33explain this to me like there's a fine
- 5:35line between it happens best ofs don't
- 5:39don't
- 5:46I ain't going to have enough testosterone
- 5:47this week.
- 5:47Oh, man.
- 5:49But, like you said,
- 5:51you're going to have a hundred-something
- 5:52teams there.
- 5:53At some point, the cutoff has to, like,
- 5:56it gets, like, literally, like you said,
- 5:57it gets down to luck because there is
- 6:00just a matter of trying to get it
- 6:03just right.
- 6:05Because, I mean,
- 6:08what distinguishes the top ten or fifteen
- 6:11teams?
- 6:12Don't they all start to taste similarly at
- 6:15some point?
- 6:16I'll give you a rundown so you can
- 6:17kind of have an idea.
- 6:18Yes.
- 6:19So we'll get there Friday morning real
- 6:22early.
- 6:22Okay.
- 6:24Okay.
- 6:26We'll get everything set up.
- 6:28Once we get our meat inspected,
- 6:31then we can start prepping.
- 6:33Once you're done prepping,
- 6:35then you got to wait to cook.
- 6:37You ain't got nothing to do.
- 6:40So we'll start a fire.
- 6:41We'll tell some more stories,
- 6:42probably smoke a cigar,
- 6:45maybe drink some brown liquid, you know,
- 6:48who knows then when it's time to cook
- 6:53as game time, like you got it,
- 6:56it's time to go.
- 6:58So,
- 6:59but what happens is everybody's got to
- 7:04cook their stuff.
- 7:07If it is not cooked,
- 7:10if everything you cook is not cooked to
- 7:11perfection, you don't have a shot.
- 7:14Right.
- 7:15I don't care what flavors you put on
- 7:17it.
- 7:17Right.
- 7:18You have to cook it perfectly first.
- 7:20Sure.
- 7:23Kind of like playing Texas Hold'em.
- 7:27You can't see the flop unless you put
- 7:28in the Annie, right?
- 7:29Yeah, exactly.
- 7:30You know what I mean?
- 7:31You don't get cards unless you've seen
- 7:32that.
- 7:33So same thing with same thing would
- 7:36accomplish.
- 7:36You have to cook everything.
- 7:38Perfect.
- 7:38That's just the empty to get into the
- 7:39hand.
- 7:40Is there a timeframe that they force you
- 7:42to cook in?
- 7:43Oh yeah.
- 7:44Like a,
- 7:44like you've got a four hour window or
- 7:46six hour window away from the time that
- 7:49you start from the time that you get
- 7:52your meat inspected.
- 7:53Okay.
- 7:55Um, you can start cooking whenever,
- 7:57once you get it inspected.
- 7:58Okay.
- 7:59Now there's different turn in times.
- 8:03So we're going to cook brisket.
- 8:04We're going to cook chicken.
- 8:06We're going to cook pork.
- 8:07We're going to cook ribs.
- 8:09There's different turn in times,
- 8:11thirty minutes apart for all four of
- 8:12those.
- 8:13Okay.
- 8:14Okay.
- 8:15So, um,
- 8:18let's just,
- 8:19and I'm trying to remember out of top
- 8:21of my head,
- 8:21but you take and you'll go turn in
- 8:25the chicken first and you turn into ribs
- 8:29and you turn in pork and he turned
- 8:30brisket.
- 8:30I think that's the correct order.
- 8:32Probably not.
- 8:32And we'll forgive my sicknesses cloudy
- 8:36brain,
- 8:39but you got to think with a hundred
- 8:40teams,
- 8:43how many judges you have
- 8:46be able to judge that many plates of
- 8:49barbecue that come in right right so just
- 8:53taking a guess there's going to be a
- 8:55couple hundred judges so i don't know why
- 9:00in my mind i never considered there would
- 9:02be that many judges yeah let's be like
- 9:04ten okay this makes so much more sense
- 9:08see this is every table
- 9:10We'll have six judges,
- 9:13six judges at every table.
- 9:14All right.
- 9:15So let's say dairy's barbecue team turns
- 9:20in their ribs.
- 9:22Trent's barbecue team turns in their ribs.
- 9:24Charlie's barbecue team turns in their
- 9:26ribs.
- 9:28Sarah's little Charlie's Mason's cadence,
- 9:32Julia's all these teams turned in all
- 9:35their ribs, right?
- 9:37Let's say there's
- 9:41in a row right it's likely that those
- 9:46ten teams that just turned in all went
- 9:49to different tables okay okay right so
- 9:53your ribs come to my table with me
- 9:59and five other judges trent's ribs went to
- 10:04the table next to you
- 10:07him and five other judges are judging
- 10:10somebody else's plate, right?
- 10:12So now the same people aren't judging the
- 10:15same plate.
- 10:21So you got six people judging your food
- 10:24that didn't judge his food.
- 10:26Right.
- 10:27So how do they weed folks out?
- 10:29So they all went through,
- 10:31all of those judges went through a class
- 10:34and that class taught them what to look
- 10:36for.
- 10:38Taste, texture, tenderness.
- 10:44they judge you off of those so if
- 10:46a table has let's just assume ten turn
- 10:49ins they draw the top one they take
- 10:52the top one you get graded okay okay
- 10:56and it's a scale i think it's one
- 10:58to ten but if you get less than
- 11:00a six it's inedible right seriously
- 11:03seriously okay so if you can if you
- 11:06get a six you should not be in
- 11:08a competition
- 11:10something something happened so assume
- 11:12somebody came in like are they are they
- 11:17getting a six they get a card yeah
- 11:20everybody gets their stuff okay so and you
- 11:24mentioned seventy first yeah all right um
- 11:27i've been at seventy seventh okay in a
- 11:30competition yeah it was supposed to be a
- 11:31jab i couldn't remember the right number
- 11:32you know so i just figured i'd correct
- 11:36you um on that i gave you six
- 11:39spots i've never gotten anything less than
- 11:42an eight okay
- 11:47All right.
- 11:48Well, yeah,
- 11:50I'm just going to chalk it up to
- 11:51that.
- 11:51The judges, I mean, I guess quote,
- 11:54they know what they're doing and, and are,
- 11:56is there like a,
- 11:57do they do it in heat?
- 11:58Like no matter, no matter what you say,
- 12:03your taste profile and my taste profile
- 12:06are totally different.
- 12:07Absolutely.
- 12:07I guess what I'm getting at, let me,
- 12:08let me sum it up like this.
- 12:11If my table has a perfect tan and
- 12:13your table has a perfect tan who's first.
- 12:18It's very difficult.
- 12:19Okay.
- 12:20Um, but you have, it's not,
- 12:23so you have,
- 12:24everybody gets a score and then it goes
- 12:27from there to the,
- 12:28there's a throwaway number.
- 12:29Okay.
- 12:30Right.
- 12:31So you take, and I can't remember the,
- 12:32all the details right now,
- 12:34cause I'm a little foggy,
- 12:35but you take all of that and then
- 12:36it goes down to the next level.
- 12:38Yeah.
- 12:38And then it just goes from there.
- 12:40It's kind of like missing the cut and
- 12:41golf.
- 12:42similar.
- 12:44But again,
- 12:45if you got two or three straight tens,
- 12:48straight perfect scores,
- 12:49whatever you want to call it.
- 12:49I've never seen that happen.
- 12:53Probably not.
- 12:55To consider a tie, though,
- 12:56for first or second,
- 12:58would they just call it a tie?
- 13:00Or would they have a taste off?
- 13:02There's how the scoring is done.
- 13:05You can go down, okay, hey,
- 13:07you got six tens.
- 13:11You got six tens.
- 13:13This person gave you a nine point nine.
- 13:16Okay.
- 13:16This person gave you nine point eight.
- 13:18Okay.
- 13:19Okay.
- 13:19Now we're getting there.
- 13:20So.
- 13:21Okay.
- 13:21Down to the next level.
- 13:22That person's out.
- 13:24Okay.
- 13:25So there is a cut off a tweaking
- 13:27of the.
- 13:27Yeah.
- 13:27All right.
- 13:29you take the top five the top five
- 13:31numbers is what you get is how you
- 13:32rank them okay rank the plate so and
- 13:35i can show it all to you better
- 13:37than i can tell you right now i'm
- 13:38going to show up this thing and they're
- 13:39going to look at me like this guy
- 13:41is a duck out of water he has
- 13:43no idea of being here no you will
- 13:45fit right in excellent it is um
- 13:50Yeah.
- 13:52We'll plan for the weather.
- 13:53Sure.
- 13:56And I would bring a comfortable chair.
- 13:58I might bring two.
- 14:00Yeah.
- 14:01Yeah, there's nothing wrong with that.
- 14:03Yeah.
- 14:04Yeah.
- 14:06And then, yeah, I'm thinking about,
- 14:09depending on what the weather is this
- 14:10year, I may bring a blow-up mattress.
- 14:14Sleep in the truck?
- 14:15Sleep outside somewhere?
- 14:16Sleep in the bed of the truck, yeah.
- 14:18Last year I slept in the cab of
- 14:19the truck and I woke up and I
- 14:21felt like my head was coming out my
- 14:23foot.
- 14:26it was i had a few experiences in
- 14:28in parts of life where i've slept in
- 14:30cabs or trucks and whatever and i will
- 14:32say i've always been able to find that
- 14:35one spot where it was okay yeah but
- 14:38leading up to that it is brutal the
- 14:42the the way i do competitions is and
- 14:46most most of the guys like to cook
- 14:48get up early in the morning and they
- 14:50cook hot and fast and they try to
- 14:52get it done really quickly
- 14:54and there's no rest time right you know
- 14:56very little i just i just don't like
- 15:00cooking hot fast yeah that's the point of
- 15:03barbecue yeah and the problem is i'm
- 15:06traditional so being traditional in
- 15:09barbecue and being traditional in
- 15:11competitions right is two different things
- 15:14right so
- 15:16We'll see.
- 15:18More than likely, we will cook overnight.
- 15:22We'll go to bed three-ish.
- 15:26We'll get up at five-ish.
- 15:29So it's not really like you're sleeping.
- 15:31Good times.
- 15:32You just get a nap.
- 15:33Good times.
- 15:34And then I get up and go get
- 15:36some coffee in Waffle House.
- 15:39Heavy on the coffee.
- 15:41We were... I was watching...
- 15:45uh reruns of the deadliest catch and first
- 15:49of all i there's a stat i want
- 15:51to throw out at you at least early
- 15:53on that industry if you will averages one
- 16:00death a week at least in the early
- 16:02two thousands
- 16:04And I got to thinking that's a whole
- 16:06lot,
- 16:06but then literally in the middle of these
- 16:07episodes, the first or second season,
- 16:08whatever it is,
- 16:09there's a whole ship that goes down.
- 16:11Well, that's six people.
- 16:12So when you say to average like that,
- 16:14like, okay.
- 16:15And the,
- 16:15the seasons sometimes are only two weeks
- 16:17long, depending on various factors.
- 16:21So you're like, well,
- 16:21there's three a week, you know, I mean,
- 16:23on average, you see what I'm saying?
- 16:25So like, it truly is quite deadly,
- 16:27but I want to bring it up since
- 16:29you brought up coffee.
- 16:31I have,
- 16:31I consume my fair share of coffee.
- 16:33I love just black coffee.
- 16:34Just, I mean, it's,
- 16:37but this one guy was like,
- 16:40we're running out on the show.
- 16:43And this other guy turns around and is
- 16:45like, what do you mean we're running out?
- 16:47He's like,
- 16:47we got about four pots of coffee left.
- 16:50And the guy's doing the math,
- 16:51like in his head fast.
- 16:53And he's looking at how many crab are
- 16:55in the tank, how much time's left,
- 16:58turning in his wind.
- 16:59He's like,
- 17:01we don't have to get this done.
- 17:02Cause like,
- 17:03he is not going to work without coffee.
- 17:05And those dudes pull like,
- 17:07our shifts sometimes.
- 17:08And I can't imagine trying to do that
- 17:09without some sort of caffeine, nicotine,
- 17:13something that just, you know, drives you,
- 17:15whatever.
- 17:16And he shook that can and he was
- 17:18like last one.
- 17:19And they were literally headed back to
- 17:20port.
- 17:21It was about six hours away.
- 17:23And I was like, all right,
- 17:24like he cut Nick close.
- 17:26And I just,
- 17:27it's a world that the large majority of
- 17:29us would never understand, never get into,
- 17:32never have, you know what I'm saying?
- 17:34Um, it's just a unique, uh, unique spot.
- 17:37So I want to bring up, this is,
- 17:42I got a phone call yesterday, uh,
- 17:45And it's probably the, I don't know,
- 17:51third,
- 17:52maybe fourth phone call I've gotten
- 17:57recently about the same topic.
- 18:02And I'm trying to understand, um,
- 18:09guy called me and,
- 18:11and wants to start his own business.
- 18:19And my first response to him was why?
- 18:25Now, that should be perplexing.
- 18:27Because I started my own business, right?
- 18:30I know why I started it.
- 18:31Right.
- 18:32But like, why are you wanting?
- 18:33I don't understand why you want to do
- 18:35it.
- 18:35Now, here's the reason.
- 18:37This gentleman
- 18:39that I'm speaking about now.
- 18:41And I had another one the other day
- 18:43that we both know his boss and I
- 18:48can understand why he wants to do it.
- 18:52But I don't think people understand what
- 18:56entrepreneurship really is.
- 19:00And you brought up the deadliest catch.
- 19:02Most of those guys own their own boats.
- 19:06And what they do is incredible.
- 19:11Not only is it
- 19:13life-threatening daily but it's it's
- 19:18brutal right right um so we're gonna take
- 19:23a quick break but when we come back
- 19:24i want to talk about entrepreneurship and
- 19:27why people want to do what i do
- 19:30every day sure
- 19:34welcome back to singletree nation guys i'm
- 19:37your man charlie eblen we are discussing
- 19:40all things today we've gotten some
- 19:43barbecue comp secrets coming up going to
- 19:48smoking on the shores my man dairy we're
- 19:51gonna uh i think we're just gonna take
- 19:54home the grand champion this time you know
- 19:58how crazy would that be
- 20:02you imagine i would all right so when
- 20:03i used to play cards in high school
- 20:05and college and we do just a little
- 20:07bit of you know poker and gambling
- 20:09whatever i was always the guy as soon
- 20:11as i got up i quit i would
- 20:13never go back to another competition i
- 20:14would say one and done i won first
- 20:16place thank you very much i know that's
- 20:19not the nature of the competition and and
- 20:21the community and that kind of thing but
- 20:23there'd be a part of me it's like
- 20:24yeah go out on top so
- 20:27That'd be smart.
- 20:30Nobody can take it away from you.
- 20:33I've won a hundred percent of the
- 20:34competitions I've ever been to.
- 20:37I'm also a little bit of a sore
- 20:38loser.
- 20:38There was one year I was involved in
- 20:40a chili cook-off.
- 20:41I won first place.
- 20:42And I was like,
- 20:43I had it in the bag.
- 20:43Like I knew right next year,
- 20:45didn't even place.
- 20:46And I was a little ticked about it.
- 20:47And I was like, what ha the,
- 20:50the reason I was upset that the
- 20:51competition was almost the exact same.
- 20:53Wasn't much that changed.
- 20:56You know, uh,
- 20:57you got beat with a white chicken chili.
- 20:59Didn't you?
- 20:59No,
- 21:00I would get upset if I ever got
- 21:02beat by that,
- 21:03but that was last chili comp.
- 21:08Did you win with that or did you
- 21:09lose to that?
- 21:09I lost to that.
- 21:10Okay.
- 21:12But yes.
- 21:13I mean,
- 21:13I know it was going to happen because
- 21:14it was like a neighborhood competition.
- 21:16It wasn't anything crazy.
- 21:17Yeah.
- 21:18But like I took my restaurant chili to
- 21:20a neighborhood comp.
- 21:23Like, for real,
- 21:24like one of my guys who wrote the
- 21:26recipe with me.
- 21:29And I didn't even say with me.
- 21:30He wrote the recipe.
- 21:32I just tweaked it a little bit.
- 21:33Right, right.
- 21:35That's funny.
- 21:36This dude, he was,
- 21:38and he even said it too.
- 21:39He was like,
- 21:39you're going to get beat by a white
- 21:40chicken chili.
- 21:41Oh, jeez.
- 21:41And I'm like, bro, I know.
- 21:43Like, don't even talk to me about it.
- 21:45Hopefully nobody enters one.
- 21:47Sure enough.
- 21:50Have you ever tried white chicken chili?
- 21:51Yeah.
- 21:51Tried to make it?
- 21:53Yeah.
- 21:54I can't do it.
- 21:54I screw it up.
- 21:55It's not chili.
- 21:56No, it's not.
- 21:57It's chicken soup.
- 22:01But my competition didn't change.
- 22:04And I went from first to not even
- 22:05placing on back-to-back years.
- 22:07I was like, what?
- 22:08And so I'm a little bit of a
- 22:09sore loser in those regards.
- 22:11Look, man.
- 22:11I'm going to tell you what.
- 22:14Somebody asked me the other day why I
- 22:16don't claim to have award winning
- 22:18barbecue.
- 22:19Because I've won awards right for my
- 22:22barbecue, right?
- 22:28stay for those of you who can't see
- 22:32that my microphone keeps falling down
- 22:35sometimes you got to talk to it the
- 22:36right way but why yeah what's the take
- 22:43on that i mean look i i don't
- 22:47i didn't get into cooking barbecue to win
- 22:50awards sure
- 22:52And that's why, honestly,
- 22:53I really haven't done a lot of barbecue
- 22:55comps.
- 22:57Now that I've gotten into the competition
- 22:59world, for me, it's not even,
- 23:05it's more the camaraderie.
- 23:07It's more the fellowship.
- 23:09It's more the community.
- 23:11It's more like meeting all these new
- 23:13people and the networking than it ever
- 23:16will be about winning.
- 23:18Now, don't get me wrong.
- 23:20Whenever all the turn-ins are done and
- 23:22we've just spent thirty-some odd hours
- 23:25staying up and cooking and setting up and
- 23:27tearing down and cleaning up and you're
- 23:29standing underneath the awning and you're
- 23:31waiting on all the calls to come through
- 23:35and they don't call your name...
- 23:40But at the same time,
- 23:41when they do call that somebody's name of
- 23:43a buddy or somebody you know.
- 23:44It's really cool.
- 23:45And I'm like, that's cool.
- 23:46And it's just like being able to cheer
- 23:49on.
- 23:50Like,
- 23:50you don't have to put me down for
- 23:52you to be better.
- 23:52Yeah.
- 23:53Like,
- 23:53we're all out here trying to do the
- 23:55same thing, having a blast.
- 23:56Yeah.
- 23:58Look,
- 24:00I've learned a lot about barbecue just
- 24:03going to those competitions.
- 24:04Absolutely.
- 24:06And none of it had to do with
- 24:07cooking.
- 24:08Right, right.
- 24:10You know what I mean?
- 24:12And we talked about it a couple of
- 24:13weeks ago on air as well.
- 24:15The community that the barbecue world is
- 24:17in is crazy.
- 24:19It goes back to the guy that called
- 24:20me yesterday and the one that called me
- 24:23not too long ago.
- 24:25Um,
- 24:26and they getting into this business is,
- 24:31is hard.
- 24:33It is,
- 24:34it is not for the faint of heart.
- 24:36Right.
- 24:36Starting your own thing is not for the
- 24:38faint of heart.
- 24:39I had a conversation with a,
- 24:40with a gentleman today and I had the
- 24:48same conversation with my father as well.
- 24:51People don't understand.
- 24:53what it's like working for yourself.
- 24:57You just don't get it.
- 25:00And I'm not trying to take anything away
- 25:01from other people when I say it,
- 25:04but I have my wife, my kids,
- 25:08my dog, my house,
- 25:10my life to worry about every single day.
- 25:13So do most men in this world.
- 25:17But I also have a team of twelve
- 25:21or so individuals that I have to worry
- 25:24about their other halves, their mortgages,
- 25:27their light bills, their safety,
- 25:30whether or not they're going to get to
- 25:31work and back.
- 25:33all of that as well.
- 25:36And then when money gets tight,
- 25:39because in any business that always
- 25:40there's always a time that money is going
- 25:41to get tight.
- 25:43Now you're having to worry not only about
- 25:45your stuff,
- 25:46but you're worried about their stuff too,
- 25:47right?
- 25:48Because if you can't pay them,
- 25:49then they can't pay their bills.
- 25:52That's a whole new world of stress.
- 25:55People don't understand that.
- 25:57I don't think
- 26:01I don't want to say true entrepreneur,
- 26:02like there's people that haven't done what
- 26:04they want to do,
- 26:05but entrepreneurs who go out and be
- 26:08successful and make it typically have a
- 26:11sense of the work that will be involved.
- 26:15I think people who look at
- 26:17entrepreneurship as something to be
- 26:20attained, or that's the cush part of,
- 26:22well, once you've made it,
- 26:23you become an entrepreneur because they,
- 26:26they literally see, well, look,
- 26:29he takes three days off a week and
- 26:30goes golfing, you know, and well,
- 26:31he sleeps in because he gets to take
- 26:34the kids to school and he does all
- 26:36the extra time for the fun stuff.
- 26:37Cause he's an entrepreneur and, you know,
- 26:39he owns his own business.
- 26:40That's what they do.
- 26:42Even for.
- 26:45various businesses,
- 26:47and I'm going to pick on real estate
- 26:48here a little bit because their schedules
- 26:50can be so flexible.
- 26:51And so whatever,
- 26:53those people are still busting tail,
- 26:56trying to get certain dots to connect
- 26:59paperwork, deadlines,
- 27:01contracts extended or closed or whatever.
- 27:03And so there's a whole lot of that
- 27:06goes into it where,
- 27:07but if you take a step back,
- 27:09So-and-so sponsored by X, Y,
- 27:11Z real estate.
- 27:12And they're at a golf tournament who Luke
- 27:14happens to be playing.
- 27:15I want to be a business owner one
- 27:17day, you know?
- 27:17And so there's this, this,
- 27:18this people see the glitz and the glam.
- 27:21They don't see the work.
- 27:22Absolutely.
- 27:23But they don't see the guy who was
- 27:25up at three AM prepping to head out
- 27:28so that he could go back home to
- 27:31get the kids, to take them to school,
- 27:32to go back to work or the guy
- 27:34that woke up at one in the morning
- 27:35because he couldn't figure out how to fall
- 27:38back asleep.
- 27:38Right.
- 27:39You know, and then I, I mean,
- 27:41those are things that people,
- 27:42and that's not to say that there aren't
- 27:43stresses in people's lives,
- 27:44but they think, oh, look,
- 27:46he gets to drop his kids off every
- 27:47day.
- 27:48Cause he owns a business.
- 27:49Well, that's your four hour break,
- 27:51you know, of, well,
- 27:53I've been going since four.
- 27:54Yeah.
- 27:55I better do something eight o'clock.
- 27:56I'll take the kids to school and then
- 27:57I'm right back to it.
- 27:58You know, like it's, it's funny.
- 27:59Like I,
- 28:00I typically will go to my restaurant
- 28:03sometime in the morning.
- 28:05Yeah.
- 28:06But I started working well before then.
- 28:08Hmm.
- 28:10And I was talking to one of my
- 28:11guys the other day,
- 28:13and I was telling him that I do
- 28:14a lot of my media stuff first thing
- 28:17in the morning when I first get out
- 28:19of bed.
- 28:19And I'm just trying to figure out life
- 28:22because it's not mentally taxing.
- 28:25It's just what's visual.
- 28:27So I can play around on my phone
- 28:29and make those videos.
- 28:33And he was like, man,
- 28:33you do that every day?
- 28:35yeah yeah absolutely if i don't then we
- 28:39don't have any content for the restaurant
- 28:41and now here's what's crazy is i don't
- 28:47do enough i need to do more right
- 28:54and i started thinking about it the other
- 28:55day like my i used to go live
- 29:00all the time and i don't go live
- 29:02hardly at all anymore
- 29:03And I'm thinking I'm playing around with
- 29:05going live every day for three to five
- 29:09minutes every day on my personal page,
- 29:13whatever the thought of the day is.
- 29:15Right.
- 29:15You know, um, sit by the fire and,
- 29:19you know, have a fireside chat with Chuck.
- 29:23Well, at least you've got a name.
- 29:25I don't know if that's going to be
- 29:27it or not, but we'll figure it out.
- 29:30That's good, right, Trent?
- 29:34I don't know.
- 29:34I've been thinking a lot.
- 29:35I've had multiple calls about people
- 29:37wanting to start their own businesses
- 29:39recently.
- 29:41I want to throw some caution to the
- 29:44wind a little bit.
- 29:46Look, I got lucky.
- 29:49I mean,
- 29:49I was in the right place at the
- 29:50right time.
- 29:51I met the right people,
- 29:53shook the right hands,
- 29:55worked way too hard.
- 29:59Sat in the Kroger parking lot in the
- 30:00middle of February in an ice storm trying
- 30:02to sell barbecue because I needed to pay
- 30:04the mortgage that month.
- 30:08Didn't know if it was going to work.
- 30:10Still to this day,
- 30:11don't know if it's going to work,
- 30:13you know, working every day,
- 30:14trying to figure it out.
- 30:15Right.
- 30:15Cause we started a media company to do
- 30:17the same thing.
- 30:17Right.
- 30:18So, I mean, it's,
- 30:19it's every day it's something and we're
- 30:20trying to,
- 30:22trying to figure it out and it's
- 30:24difficult.
- 30:25And I would tell anybody that wants to
- 30:27start their own business, call me.
- 30:30Let's talk about it.
- 30:32I don't have all the answers.
- 30:34I'm not the smartest guy in the room.
- 30:36But what I can tell you is because
- 30:38I'm not the smartest guy in the room,
- 30:40I ran into a few walls.
- 30:43And running into those walls,
- 30:44I can help you miss running into those
- 30:45walls.
- 30:46I can help you find the door versus
- 30:48just running face first into something you
- 30:50don't need to.
- 30:51Years ago,
- 30:52I had a buddy of mine who was
- 30:53trying to start a business and he was
- 30:55going to numerous business guys that we
- 30:58all knew at the time,
- 31:01successful businessmen.
- 31:02Like they had three or four businesses.
- 31:04They knew how the flow of everything
- 31:05worked, whatever.
- 31:08And X, Y, Z question.
- 31:12And a lot of it was just how
- 31:14do I operate my business?
- 31:15What do I do?
- 31:15You know, these things and like,
- 31:17you just go do it.
- 31:19And I think twenty, twenty five years ago,
- 31:21there wasn't the ability to put it out
- 31:25there the way there is now.
- 31:26And because of that,
- 31:27you have entrepreneurs like you, right?
- 31:29Call me.
- 31:30I can't tell you every single step to
- 31:32take,
- 31:32but I can tell you which ones to
- 31:33avoid.
- 31:34You know, there's at least that aspect.
- 31:36And there still is.
- 31:38There's still a segment of running a
- 31:41business that is literally just go do it.
- 31:45Yeah.
- 31:45And that you can't know until you do.
- 31:47I mean,
- 31:49and that's such a weird aspect because my
- 31:52buddy who I'm thinking about specifically
- 31:53is.
- 31:54He didn't find out until like two years
- 31:57into the whole process that he wasn't
- 32:00carrying one of his insurances correctly.
- 32:03And I don't know if it cost him
- 32:04money or anything like that,
- 32:05but it's just like one of those things
- 32:07where finally he fumbled through it,
- 32:10right?
- 32:10And then all of a sudden the agent
- 32:12or whoever is like, hey, just FYI.
- 32:15Y'all may want to tweak that.
- 32:17And so we did the same thing and
- 32:18you don't know until you, you know,
- 32:20like I said,
- 32:20you don't know until you know,
- 32:21that's right.
- 32:21Yeah.
- 32:22So, um,
- 32:23I think it's unique when business guys say
- 32:25that,
- 32:27but I also see a very different world
- 32:30where a lot of business people now,
- 32:32I can't tell you what steps to take,
- 32:34but I can tell you what to wants
- 32:35to avoid.
- 32:36Look, this is going to shock.
- 32:36A lot of people may not shock some,
- 32:41and my wife would probably disagree with
- 32:42all of them, but I'm about to say,
- 32:44um,
- 32:46When I turn my phone around and start
- 32:50recording, I feel awkward as AF.
- 32:54Like I feel goofy sitting here staring at
- 32:57this camera right now.
- 32:58I feel goofy.
- 33:00Like I don't feel like I look natural
- 33:02or anything like that.
- 33:05I still stutter on my words.
- 33:07I still say um and um and um
- 33:08way too much.
- 33:13You have to start somewhere.
- 33:14You do.
- 33:15And five years ago,
- 33:17I had a TikTok account.
- 33:20I had an Instagram account.
- 33:21I had a Facebook.
- 33:22I had a Twitter.
- 33:24I think if I remember correctly,
- 33:26there was twenty seven followers on
- 33:28TikTok.
- 33:30Double digits, baby.
- 33:33My Instagram account,
- 33:35Singletree didn't have an Instagram
- 33:37account to start with.
- 33:38Right.
- 33:38I had to I had to start that
- 33:40one.
- 33:41But now we got,
- 33:42and some odd people that follow us on
- 33:44Instagram,
- 33:44almost to follow us on Facebook,
- 33:47a couple more thousand on Tik TOK.
- 33:50And that's all from just doing it.
- 33:51Right.
- 33:53I tell you that because I didn't know
- 33:56what I was doing.
- 34:00I just did it.
- 34:00Right.
- 34:02Trent and I had a conversation sitting
- 34:05outside one day about just starting a
- 34:07podcast.
- 34:08I didn't know what I was doing.
- 34:10I I'll never forget coming in here,
- 34:13sitting in the corner with my laptop on
- 34:15the first episode, talking to Trent,
- 34:18not having an idea of what I was
- 34:20doing.
- 34:21I think even if you go back there,
- 34:23there's two aspects of that.
- 34:25First, you,
- 34:26you can't learn some things from a book.
- 34:31You're just going to have to figure it
- 34:33out on the fly.
- 34:35Secondly,
- 34:36I do think you have to have some
- 34:38sort of way to have a measurable growth.
- 34:42And the one thing I love about media
- 34:44is it allows for that.
- 34:46And you can go look at our episodes
- 34:49where, you know,
- 34:50the very first one where I was a
- 34:52guest versus going back to some of those
- 34:54very first ones.
- 34:56We got all the white walls, you know,
- 34:57like it's just, you know,
- 34:59you're in the hospital, you know,
- 35:00the operating room.
- 35:01If you go back to the very first
- 35:03episodes before you were on the show.
- 35:05Right.
- 35:07And I was sitting at the table with
- 35:08my laptop.
- 35:13One of my favorites was when we had,
- 35:16uh, Peter Demason.
- 35:20Okay.
- 35:22And, and watching,
- 35:24I watched some of that episode the other
- 35:25day and just watching how.
- 35:31awkwardly i sat there right and asked some
- 35:34of these questions and i'm reading off my
- 35:37paper and it's awful i won't share with
- 35:40you the details of why i was super
- 35:43nervous on air you and i had you've
- 35:46i've shared with you i was super nervous
- 35:48today but and then you calmed me down
- 35:50and all that related back to my only
- 35:54episode that i've done by myself
- 35:56And that's where it stemmed from.
- 35:57And then, you know,
- 35:58I was talking with Julia and she was
- 36:00like, hey, but listen,
- 36:01think about the context and how that one
- 36:03came about and who it was with and,
- 36:06you know, just kind of all the little.
- 36:08And I was like, wait a minute,
- 36:09like I should have, you know,
- 36:11I can do that now.
- 36:12And what I fast forward to mentally is
- 36:16walking through New Heights Brewery and we
- 36:20do a live show with a bunch of
- 36:23Billy Strings fans.
- 36:25Or we go to Savannah Bananas and we're
- 36:27in the...
- 36:29titan stadium interviewing kids and
- 36:31talking and having a big time and all
- 36:34the way back from sitting in the corner
- 36:35at that table and like i don't know
- 36:37what question that is so there is a
- 36:40measurable growth there and i think that's
- 36:41part of going to that entrepreneur's part
- 36:44entrepreneur part is being able to look
- 36:47back and say yeah year one i missed
- 36:50this i skipped that didn't even know this
- 36:52existed
- 36:53by year three i haven't missed a payroll
- 36:56yet all my taxes are caught up and
- 36:59nobody's come to try to shut me down
- 37:01yet fast forward to year ten i've only
- 37:04been sued once my doors are open you
- 37:07know i'm saying like there's a there's
- 37:09some sort of measurable fact in that
- 37:11because let's be honest all these things
- 37:13come about in life i had a buddy
- 37:14my just few it's been about six or
- 37:16eight months ago now
- 37:18He literally is like, yeah,
- 37:20going through my third lawsuit.
- 37:21And I was like third.
- 37:22And he was like, yeah,
- 37:23you get used to him after a while.
- 37:25And I was like,
- 37:26this guy would never get used to.
- 37:28And he was like, no, you do.
- 37:29He said,
- 37:29because you get named on something or, or,
- 37:32or, you know,
- 37:33and it was insurance related and they
- 37:34picked up the X, Y,
- 37:35Z factor or something.
- 37:37And I was like, I just,
- 37:39and he cut text later.
- 37:40I was a half.
- 37:40Why it all got washed out in court.
- 37:42There's no suit.
- 37:43I was like, man, what?
- 37:45for him it was water off ducks back
- 37:47he's like it's my third one you know
- 37:48what do you do so uh there's just
- 37:51aspects of business and i think the other
- 37:54thing that when it comes to entrepreneur
- 37:57is everybody wants to have
- 38:00a set of standard or criteria.
- 38:06The other problem with that is that
- 38:08criteria doesn't remain the same business
- 38:10to business.
- 38:12Not even within the same scope of,
- 38:14if you say restaurant,
- 38:16restaurant to restaurant is going to be
- 38:17different.
- 38:18And I can't sit here and tell you
- 38:20that it's going to be this or that,
- 38:22but I can sit here and tell you,
- 38:24make sure you got your liquor license,
- 38:26something like that.
- 38:28Don't mess that part up.
- 38:29Make sure you're good with your drink
- 38:31dispenser.
- 38:31Make sure you got your backflow ready to
- 38:33go.
- 38:34There's going to be inspections, but...
- 38:37I can't tell you what the cost of
- 38:38your food supply is going to do because
- 38:40you may get some global pandemic that's
- 38:43going to make a case of chicken triple
- 38:45and you weren't prepared for that.
- 38:46I am.
- 38:49Nobody was prepared for that.
- 38:51No,
- 38:52but you know who didn't worry about that?
- 38:54You're telling restaurant guy,
- 38:54you see what I'm saying?
- 38:56Like, so even restaurant to restaurant,
- 38:58you can't just say, well,
- 38:59I own a restaurant.
- 38:59So it's the same and it's just,
- 39:01it's not.
- 39:02No, they're, uh, they're different,
- 39:04but I mean, overall they're pretty close,
- 39:06you know?
- 39:06I mean, the margins are very similar.
- 39:10Some are better than others.
- 39:12I know restaurants in town that serve
- 39:15lunch and they don't make any money on
- 39:16it.
- 39:17Just to get people to come in the
- 39:18door.
- 39:19It is wild.
- 39:20I know a guy too.
- 39:23yeah the guy's crazy oh man you know
- 39:25it's a good time and then you know
- 39:28you can get a better value going to
- 39:33most local businesses better quality going
- 39:37heavy on that business yes better
- 39:40hospitality because we actually give a
- 39:43turd darn whatever
- 39:51Not to mention the fact you start knowing
- 39:52people.
- 39:53You go back to what you said earlier
- 39:57I love walking through my restaurant.
- 39:59My wife and I were working together today,
- 40:01and I love walking through my restaurant,
- 40:05and it's just the two of us.
- 40:08My wife is incredible when it comes to-
- 40:10It's like your fourth kid, isn't it?
- 40:12Man, she is, no.
- 40:13I'm like her fourth child.
- 40:15No, no.
- 40:15The restaurant is like y'all's together
- 40:17fourth child.
- 40:20I'm her fourth child.
- 40:23No, it's... Yes.
- 40:25Yes, it is.
- 40:26It's our baby for sure.
- 40:29But it's...
- 40:31was walking through the restaurant today
- 40:32and i'm just looking around place is full
- 40:35just the vibe you get you know people
- 40:38are smiling and eating the food however
- 40:40they're all men is delicious one guy comes
- 40:43in he works for the city but he
- 40:47always he would always get my chicken wing
- 40:49lunch special and i took it off because
- 40:50wings got too expensive yeah um and it
- 40:53was literally costing me money
- 40:56i was paying people to eat my chicken
- 40:57wings like this is crazy you need to
- 41:01have some you can get the chicken lunch
- 41:03special but you must order an additional
- 41:05side i gotta break it it was it
- 41:07was bad so i had to take it
- 41:09off the menu sure but uh
- 41:12long story short, now he comes in,
- 41:14he gets the chicken tenders.
- 41:15Yeah.
- 41:16And I think today was the first day
- 41:18that he got the tenders on the lunch
- 41:21special.
- 41:21He's been getting the dinner.
- 41:22Right.
- 41:23And he saw that they were on a
- 41:24lunch special.
- 41:25He's like, Ooh, let me get those.
- 41:27And he was like, Oh my goodness,
- 41:28that's a lot of food.
- 41:29I'm like, yeah, man, I'm here for you.
- 41:32Last week.
- 41:33I told you that.
- 41:34Yeah.
- 41:34I mean, like it just, you come in,
- 41:36like it's, it's, uh,
- 41:38it's a value first of all it's it's
- 41:41homegrown uh and i don't know what it
- 41:44is this this whole the the the ice
- 41:49storm thing that you know we did with
- 41:51a few weeks back going through that
- 41:54thinking about the number of people i know
- 41:55that own a business who come in have
- 42:02to take a day or two or three
- 42:04off
- 42:05that impacts a lot more than just those
- 42:09two or three weeks.
- 42:10Right.
- 42:11Or two or three days rather.
- 42:12Yeah.
- 42:13And that,
- 42:14it really got me thinking like go to
- 42:15the small business place because your,
- 42:18your, your big box stores,
- 42:19your big chain restaurants, all this,
- 42:20they're going to be fine.
- 42:22You got to think I took two days
- 42:23off, right?
- 42:24So we,
- 42:25we were off Sunday and we were off
- 42:26Monday, right?
- 42:27Technically you could go ahead and call it
- 42:30Saturday too.
- 42:31Because I was only open until four o'clock
- 42:33on Saturday.
- 42:34Right.
- 42:35And obviously we didn't do the sales that
- 42:37we would normally do on a Saturday with
- 42:38the snowstorm coming in.
- 42:39Everybody's trying to find a guy in the
- 42:40middle.
- 42:41Right.
- 42:41Yeah.
- 42:41They need to have their milk sandwiches,
- 42:44man.
- 42:45No bread, no milk.
- 42:47You good?
- 42:48There wasn't no ramen.
- 42:49You couldn't even get the shrimp ramen.
- 42:51And that's the nastiest one there is.
- 42:54Walmart was sold out of the shrimp.
- 42:58The part that got me was the frozen
- 43:00pizza aisle.
- 43:01And here's why it hit me so hard.
- 43:06If the power goes out,
- 43:07how are you going to cook that frozen
- 43:11pizza?
- 43:11There's some of us that got backups,
- 43:13right?
- 43:14I got a little propane stove that I
- 43:16use when I go camping.
- 43:17I've got a smoker.
- 43:19I'm going to not miss a meal.
- 43:20It may not be the meal I wanted,
- 43:22but I'm not going to miss a meal.
- 43:23Everybody's going to be fine.
- 43:24How are you going to cook frozen pizzas
- 43:26if the power's out?
- 43:27And there's people that just don't...
- 43:28It really dawned on me,
- 43:30there are people in this world...
- 43:33that outside of their little box have no
- 43:37idea how it how this place functions and
- 43:40it's amazing to me uh and so i
- 43:44think that goes back i'm going to tie
- 43:45that into the entrepreneur side of there's
- 43:47people that have no idea when they walk
- 43:49into a local spot versus the fifth chain
- 43:53that moved into town they don't realize
- 43:56that stark difference of what that really
- 43:58serves
- 43:59And that's just impressive to me because,
- 44:01and maybe it's just being aware.
- 44:03What's the ignorance's bliss?
- 44:04If I'm just not aware,
- 44:06I don't have to think about it.
- 44:07I'll tell you one thing, man.
- 44:11Everybody says that they eat all the milk
- 44:14and the bread.
- 44:17But I want to know what butthole bought
- 44:21all the grapes.
- 44:24The fruit section at my Kroger was wiped
- 44:26out.
- 44:27Gone.
- 44:28You couldn't get an apple,
- 44:30an orange again,
- 44:32unless you're putting that fruit away.
- 44:33Some SOB left like one little vine of
- 44:37grapes that had like four grapes.
- 44:39Yeah.
- 44:42Genuinely,
- 44:43if you don't eat that much in a
- 44:44week, typically,
- 44:45why are you buying it all now?
- 44:47Cause you're probably not.
- 44:48I mean, I'm judging here.
- 44:49You're probably not the kind to take the
- 44:51time to put it away, to freeze it,
- 44:52to prep it to whatever it was because
- 44:55all them weather people.
- 44:57Who I'm friends with and I love you.
- 44:58I was like, you better be careful here.
- 45:01I'm not going to throw your names out
- 45:02there.
- 45:03You know, a couple personally.
- 45:05Start with an S and an M and
- 45:07another M and a this and a that
- 45:09and a J.
- 45:11I'm not going to throw you out there
- 45:13under the bus.
- 45:16But they went crazy.
- 45:17And they told people that the apocalypse
- 45:19was coming.
- 45:20Well, according to the initial models,
- 45:22it was.
- 45:23But here's the thing.
- 45:23You have to be able to insert some
- 45:25logic and reason.
- 45:25Because they would always follow up.
- 45:27We're talking about the general public.
- 45:29But that...
- 45:31but we we we sat here and they
- 45:34would follow it up hey these models aren't
- 45:36coming together we're just telling you
- 45:37what's what's being told to us we're
- 45:39relaying information and then friday night
- 45:41hey we're gonna get like an inch or
- 45:42two at best heavy on the ice and
- 45:45they were right on the ice nashville looks
- 45:47like an apocalyptic town right now and
- 45:50like there are certain parts of nashville
- 45:52that like just insane but aside from that
- 45:57The weatherman can only do what the
- 45:59computer tells them.
- 46:00And I give them a little grace there
- 46:03because they always get it right the day
- 46:04of.
- 46:09After everybody bought all the milk.
- 46:11So I tell you,
- 46:12buying a gallon of milk.
- 46:13That logic is flawed.
- 46:16It's awful flawed.
- 46:17You're supposed to hear that.
- 46:19It's terribly flawed.
- 46:20That's like saying,
- 46:22I'm going to bet a million dollars on
- 46:23the Super Bowl on February.
- 46:28Do it.
- 46:31Do you think I still win the same
- 46:32amount of money?
- 46:32No, no, no.
- 46:33I wouldn't win nothing.
- 46:34No, no.
- 46:36The game was over two days ago.
- 46:39You said February tenth.
- 46:40That's right.
- 46:41I wasn't even hearing that part.
- 46:45I give grace to weathermen.
- 46:48We critique the heck out of those people.
- 46:50Look,
- 46:50they are some of the smartest people.
- 46:52They go through tons of schooling.
- 46:53They are.
- 46:54The science and the knowledge they have is
- 46:59incredible.
- 47:00And then depending on what's conspiracy
- 47:02theory,
- 47:02they don't even know which part they have
- 47:03to believe.
- 47:04Is it nature?
- 47:04Is it made?
- 47:05I want to go to the classes they
- 47:08do that the professors teach on how to
- 47:11become that good of a liar.
- 47:14You just present what's right in front of
- 47:16you.
- 47:16That's all you can do.
- 47:18And that model,
- 47:18how did they not get fired?
- 47:20Cause I've been doing that my whole life
- 47:21and nobody's liked it.
- 47:22The model,
- 47:23the model said that they are just relayers
- 47:27of information,
- 47:28but I need a weather person to back
- 47:30me up strong here because like I'm,
- 47:32I'm pulling for you, but it's yeah.
- 47:35Cause most professions,
- 47:36if you were that wrong, look,
- 47:38we show you the door.
- 47:40So you go work for somebody for three
- 47:42hundred and sixty five days and you get
- 47:45it right.
- 47:46Fifty two times.
- 47:50You're fired.
- 47:53I was trying.
- 47:54You ever seen The Apprentice?
- 47:55Yeah.
- 47:56You're fired.
- 47:56Yeah.
- 47:57Absolutely.
- 47:58That quick.
- 47:59Boom.
- 48:00Done.
- 48:00Finished.
- 48:00Finito.
- 48:01Lover without the L. Oh, me.
- 48:03It's over.
- 48:06Lover without the L. Yeah.
- 48:08I had to reiterate that.
- 48:09I didn't know if everybody else called it.
- 48:10Oh, yeah, I did.
- 48:11I just wanted to throw it out there.
- 48:13Oh, man.
- 48:16Oh, man.
- 48:17Lover without the L.
- 48:18Full circle moment there.
- 48:19It sure was.
- 48:20Yeah.
- 48:20All right.
- 48:24I don't even know where to go from
- 48:25there.
- 48:27Just stop me in my tracks.
- 48:28Point being this.
- 48:31Small business took a huge hit.
- 48:33The weather impacts us greatly,
- 48:36but it doesn't just impact us.
- 48:39It impacts the people that work for us.
- 48:42And I am very passionate about my
- 48:44community.
- 48:45I'm very passionate about the people that
- 48:46work for me every single day.
- 48:48I love them to death.
- 48:49They bust their tails for me all the
- 48:52time.
- 48:53I can't make sure that they are taken
- 48:55care of unless you come and support
- 48:58Singletree.
- 48:59So take a minute.
- 49:01Come get a sandwich.
- 49:02It's seven dollars Monday through Friday
- 49:05from eleven to two.
- 49:07And it comes with some fries.
- 49:10Pulled pork, hamburger, bologna, hot dog.
- 49:13The coleslaw dog is right where it's at.
- 49:18That's currently on your lunch media.
- 49:21That's currently my favorite.
- 49:27I want a place at the new Titan
- 49:29Stadium.
- 49:30You probably don't have to get in line.
- 49:33Did you see where they're ahead of
- 49:33schedule, though?
- 49:36They're wildly ahead of schedule.
- 49:37Have you seen the overhead view of that
- 49:39place yet?
- 49:40It's going to be gorgeous.
- 49:42If they don't get a Super Bowl year
- 49:44one after that,
- 49:48it'll come in the first five years.
- 49:50Yeah, first five years.
- 49:51We'll say that's a better window.
- 49:53But my word,
- 49:55that place is going to be fantastic.
- 49:57And if we had Mike Vabrel,
- 50:00we'd be great.
- 50:01Look, you got to let the past go.
- 50:05I'm going to sit here and say this.
- 50:07I do think that they've done well with
- 50:11this new coaching staff.
- 50:13And I hope with the cap space that
- 50:16they have,
- 50:17they go out and give Cam Moore some
- 50:18weapons.
- 50:19Who did they get as an OC?
- 50:21They got Dable,
- 50:22is that how you say his name,
- 50:23from the Giants.
- 50:24Okay.
- 50:25And so I think you've got a stud,
- 50:29young, rookie quarterback.
- 50:31you've got and a ton of cat i
- 50:34think they've got like a hundred and ten
- 50:35million or so of cap space go out
- 50:38and get him some weapons get him some
- 50:41protection and get him some weapons and
- 50:45and and like i think as much and
- 50:48i as athletic as cam ward is oh
- 50:50man get that dude four seconds yeah
- 50:57Yeah, absolutely.
- 50:59Just give him a minute to be able
- 51:02to let a play develop.
- 51:04If you take a step back and in
- 51:07the last four years,
- 51:09look at what the Titans had between Frable
- 51:11and A.J.
- 51:12Brown and Derrick Henry.
- 51:15They had a core nucleus.
- 51:17And you kind of whittled all that away.
- 51:20I will say, it took a long time,
- 51:21but I think this year...
- 51:26Incredible running back.
- 51:28You can't at the same time,
- 51:30the amount of dollars that they cost.
- 51:32Correct.
- 51:33Ate up a lot of that cap space.
- 51:35I'm just saying they were in the building.
- 51:37Agreed.
- 51:37And so there was, there was, you know,
- 51:39you look at the talent and where it
- 51:40got drifted off to,
- 51:41but I think now coming back to twenty,
- 51:43twenty six,
- 51:45they've got a chance to really build.
- 51:46I think the, uh,
- 51:48that OC needs to go get scatter bow.
- 51:52bring him on.
- 51:52You see where he said his first big
- 51:54injury he had planned on retiring.
- 51:56And then it happened season one.
- 51:58He's like, Yeah, wait a minute.
- 52:02He's like, I see a different viewpoint.
- 52:03And I was like, Yeah,
- 52:04I bet you did.
- 52:04But like, golly, so you are mad.
- 52:07Like that dude is just,
- 52:10I don't say this about many people.
- 52:12He's all he's just built.
- 52:13Yeah, he is.
- 52:14Absolutely.
- 52:15Like he is just a machine.
- 52:17Yeah, he reminds me of Ray Ray.
- 52:20Ray Lewis?
- 52:20Yeah, oh yeah.
- 52:21On the offensive side of the ball.
- 52:23He just is wild.
- 52:26When you look in the whites of that
- 52:27dude's eyes...
- 52:29Like, it's scary.
- 52:30Do you remember the fullback from the
- 52:32Buccaneers?
- 52:32And he ain't that big.
- 52:33No.
- 52:34Mike Allstott.
- 52:35Yeah.
- 52:35Remember how he's kind of a headhunter
- 52:37right through the middle?
- 52:37Yeah.
- 52:38That's why I feel like Camp Scatterbow is.
- 52:39Like, he just,
- 52:40you put the ball in his hand.
- 52:41With the ability to go, whoop.
- 52:43Yeah, right.
- 52:44Sorry.
- 52:44He's got some, like,
- 52:46he's got a move or two, right?
- 52:47He's that dude.
- 52:48Allstott was all downhill.
- 52:50But that's going to be a collision every
- 52:52single time.
- 52:53Look, I'm going to tell you right now.
- 52:56I almost got about to hit me.
- 52:57No, absolutely not.
- 52:58In my prime,
- 52:59I don't want to hit me.
- 53:01I know we're getting short on time.
- 53:03I want to ask you this.
- 53:05We were watching a football game this
- 53:06weekend, and somebody made the comment of,
- 53:12could you go do that?
- 53:15When you look at the full scope of
- 53:19the athlete on the field,
- 53:21whether you're talking about offensive
- 53:22lineman, running back quarterback,
- 53:24take the skill set out.
- 53:26We're not saying, could you throw,
- 53:28could you run,
- 53:30could you fully participate well in five
- 53:35NFL plays?
- 53:38Not just be on the field.
- 53:40Today?
- 53:41Right now.
- 53:42Today.
- 53:43As the person you are.
- 53:47As a forty-six-year-old white man.
- 53:49Let's run it back to in your prime.
- 53:50You're thirty-two.
- 53:51Alright?
- 53:53Thirty-two?
- 53:54Yeah.
- 53:54That's where we're going.
- 53:55What's the average age of any NFL player?
- 53:57Twenty-eight?
- 53:57I was going to say twenty-five.
- 53:59Okay.
- 54:00Nah, surely not.
- 54:01I mean, Rogers is forty-two.
- 54:03That's what brought it up.
- 54:04That dude should have retired ten years
- 54:06ago.
- 54:06May have been, but the point is,
- 54:07the point is,
- 54:09I don't think people understand...
- 54:11Five plays?
- 54:13I wouldn't make it past the first one.
- 54:14Right, exactly.
- 54:15And that's the point I wanted to make.
- 54:16People don't understand how athletic...
- 54:19I can do five kicks.
- 54:20Literally...
- 54:21I don't think you could.
- 54:22I can do five kicks.
- 54:23No, you could not.
- 54:24As long as they didn't hit me.
- 54:25No,
- 54:26that's not part of the thing because
- 54:27you're going to be such a slow kicker.
- 54:28They're going to obliterate you because
- 54:29the rule is it's before you make contact
- 54:32with the ball and they will get to
- 54:33you before you make contact with the ball.
- 54:35No, they won't.
- 54:35I'll be on the ground, dude.
- 54:36What you talking about?
- 54:39I'm just saying that I'm not even going
- 54:40to touch the ball.
- 54:43They're going to go,
- 54:44I'm going to go like this and nod
- 54:46for the ball to get hiked.
- 54:47And as soon as I see that motion,
- 54:50I'm hitting the ground.
- 54:51But you get my point.
- 54:53That dude's going to be like...
- 54:56That is twenty-two men who are athletic.
- 55:01And I'm not saying I could do well
- 55:03in basketball.
- 55:04I could go run up and down for
- 55:07five minutes an NBA court.
- 55:08I'd be slow, I'd be behind,
- 55:10but I could catch a pass and make
- 55:11a pass and contribute to the game.
- 55:14I don't think on an NFL field,
- 55:16I could do anything at all.
- 55:17I will also say from a baseball
- 55:19standpoint,
- 55:19I don't think I can actually contribute to
- 55:21the game.
- 55:21Those are just different sorts of
- 55:23athletes.
- 55:24And it's amazing to see how they all
- 55:26play together as a,
- 55:28as a forty six year old man.
- 55:30Well, I'm not even forty six yet.
- 55:32I'm only forty five.
- 55:33I am forty six.
- 55:34So your old so some biscuit.
- 55:36Um,
- 55:42There's no way.
- 55:43No, there's not.
- 55:45I mean, look,
- 55:46could I be on the field?
- 55:47Sure.
- 55:47Put some pads on.
- 55:48Let's go.
- 55:48I'm talking about actually being able to
- 55:50somewhat contribute.
- 55:51Could you block a defensive lineman?
- 55:54That's what I'm saying.
- 55:55Right.
- 55:55No, you couldn't.
- 55:57And as a defensive lineman.
- 55:58I couldn't block Trent.
- 56:00And if you were on the defensive line.
- 56:02And that's not a shot at Trent.
- 56:04You couldn't get past an offensive
- 56:06lineman.
- 56:06Like, you know what I'm saying?
- 56:07Like, you just couldn't.
- 56:08My fourteen-year-old son is about five,
- 56:12five, five.
- 56:13Eh, might be five, six.
- 56:14Maybe.
- 56:14More like five, five.
- 56:16He's probably a hundred and seventy
- 56:18pounds.
- 56:20I have to hip toss him to get
- 56:22him to shut up.
- 56:25okay?
- 56:27And that's all I want.
- 56:28Right.
- 56:29I'm speaking to the athleticism of the
- 56:31sport.
- 56:32Top to bottom.
- 56:33There are twenty-two people in that field
- 56:35that are just...
- 56:36And what got the conversation started,
- 56:39me and my son were noticing some of
- 56:40the offensive linemen from the Seattle
- 56:42game the other night and how just agile
- 56:46they are.
- 56:47and it's just insane and those are big
- 56:49fellas they are big men i mean now
- 56:52this is going to air after the super
- 56:54bowl absolutely but since we're recording
- 56:58prior to the super bowl name that tune
- 57:03winner of this year's super bowl is drum
- 57:08roll please
- 57:09I'm really torn.
- 57:10I haven't made up my mind.
- 57:12The new England Patriots will win it this
- 57:15year and the Titans will eat crow.
- 57:19I think there's a good case for that.
- 57:21I don't want my Titans blue to bleed
- 57:23through and sway my decision.
- 57:24Cause I kind of want to Seattle looks
- 57:27good, man.
- 57:28Seattle looks real good.
- 57:29They do.
- 57:30And when they start flying around,
- 57:32having fun, my man's going to do it.
- 57:34Um, it would be phenomenal to see.
- 57:37I told my son that, uh,
- 57:40if the Patriots win a super bowl, um,
- 57:45then they will then the university of
- 57:47Tennessee.
- 57:48UT, Knoxville,
- 57:50will then have two Super Bowl champion
- 57:55quarterbacks.
- 57:55Oh, yeah, because Josh Dobbs is on there,
- 57:57right?
- 57:57Josh Dobbs is on there, baby.
- 57:58I need you to get one snap, Dobbs.
- 58:01One snap.
- 58:04That would be phenomenal.
- 58:05I'm more impressed with the part where Ray
- 58:08will be the first guy ever to coach
- 58:11and play for the same team when it's
- 58:12a bowl.
- 58:13That's impressive.
- 58:13That's true.
- 58:14There's been several that have gone to be
- 58:15players and coaches,
- 58:16but never for the same team.
- 58:17And that'd be cool.
- 58:19Yeah, I forgot he played for New England.
- 58:20Yep.
- 58:21Yeah.
- 58:23Look, man, that was a pretty good show.
- 58:27You got a good Friday to feel good
- 58:28for,
- 58:29so you want me to throw something out
- 58:30there?
- 58:31No, I got one.
- 58:32I absolutely have one.
- 58:34Tried to come well prepared,
- 58:35just didn't have it pulled up yet.
- 58:37Look, in a fast-paced life,
- 58:39make sure that you're making decisions
- 58:42that can benefit you.
- 58:43And sometimes it's to slow down,
- 58:44but sometimes, oftentimes,
- 58:46it's to be intentional.
- 58:48Choose the slow dopamine.
- 58:50Read a book.
- 58:50Cook a meal from scratch.
- 58:52Call a friend.
- 58:53Take a walk.
- 58:55Build things with your hands.
- 58:57Learn a new skill.
- 58:58Play a board game.
- 59:00and lift heavy weights or watch the
- 59:01sunset.
- 59:02Those things will feed your mind and your
- 59:04body more than you ever give them credit
- 59:06for.
- 59:06Y'all know what to do.
- 59:07Find somebody you know,
- 59:08tell them you love them.
