1:46
Speaker 3: Welcome to the show. The day after the inauguration of
1:48
Speaker 3: new Governor Patrick Morrissey and now the other members of
1:51
Speaker 3: the Board of Public Works as well, we get a
1:53
Speaker 3: new state Auditor, we get a new Attorney General, new
1:55
Speaker 3: Secretary of State, et cetera, et cetera. Going to get
1:57
Speaker 3: into all that a little bit later on. Plus the
1:59
Speaker 3: city Charleston now has a new city councilman in the
2:03
Speaker 3: form of a gentleman by the name of Harper Gardner.
2:05
Speaker 3: He represents Ward fifteen. He was appointed following the resignation
2:09
Speaker 3: of Sam MINORDI we're gonna get to know Counselman Gardner
2:11
Speaker 3: a little bit later on, plus several other things in
2:14
Speaker 3: the news. I want to get to as well, but
2:16
Speaker 3: it's always your phone calls and tex Star Welcome big
2:18
Speaker 3: Ley Piggley Wiggily hotline three zero four three four five
2:21
Speaker 3: fifty eight fifty eight, Tony the Taylor text three zero
2:23
Speaker 3: four nine three five five zero zero eight. Before we
2:26
Speaker 3: get to anything else, though, I do want to throw
2:28
Speaker 3: this out. You heard Jeff Jenkins talking about it on
2:30
Speaker 3: the news. Man. I tell you I pull into Charleston,
2:32
Speaker 3: you know, normally about say seven thirty ish in the morning,
2:36
Speaker 3: coming across the Fort Hill Bridge, there are potholes that
2:42
Speaker 3: you could probably put a small piece of farm equipment.
2:47
Speaker 3: I mean, it's bad. So what they are going to
2:50
Speaker 3: do and Jeff talked about this on the news starting
2:53
Speaker 3: I think immediately and if you're in it, you can
2:55
Speaker 3: you can let me know about it. They're planning rolling
2:59
Speaker 3: roadblock near the oak Wood Road exit, both east and westbound,
3:03
Speaker 3: because I mean, I just luckily, you know, at that
3:06
Speaker 3: time of morning when I'm coming to Charleston, traffics basically
3:09
Speaker 3: at a standstill between people coming off oak Wood trying
3:12
Speaker 3: to get in the lane to pass Virginia Street and
3:14
Speaker 3: then people like me that are trying to make the
3:17
Speaker 3: right to get onto Virginia Street off the exit there.
3:20
Speaker 3: And I mean, they are some pretty pretty big pot
3:23
Speaker 3: These aren't potholes. I mean that's a disgrace of potholes everywhere.
3:26
Speaker 3: These are like craters there. This is the kind that
3:29
Speaker 3: you will lose a small car and not just bust
3:32
Speaker 3: a tire. So again, it's going to be a little
3:34
Speaker 3: slow going through that area. They're out, the road crews
3:36
Speaker 3: are out saying they let us know that there are
3:38
Speaker 3: going to be rolling roadblocks in that area this morning.
3:41
Speaker 3: So again, if you are going to be traveling in
3:43
Speaker 3: an area, please use caution and be prepared to wait
3:46
Speaker 3: a little while. I want to welcome to the show now,
3:48
Speaker 3: Delegate Hollis Lewis. Good morning, sir, how are you, good morning,
3:51
Speaker 3: How you doing? Thank you for having me on. So
3:53
Speaker 3: you were okay, and you were high five and everything
3:55
Speaker 3: I was saying there about those.
3:56
Speaker 5: Potholes, and again I roll cruise. They're doing a fabulous job.
3:59
Speaker 5: But I wrote of taking a meeting with the winning
4:01
Speaker 5: and assault and everything like that, and we're not careful.
4:03
Speaker 3: And we're not done yet. Yes, and I were talking
4:05
Speaker 3: before the show. You said you like the four seasons.
4:07
Speaker 3: I do too. However, I think I'm over it. I'm
4:09
Speaker 3: over the two point last season. Yeah, yeah, I have.
4:14
Speaker 3: You're a delegate out of fifty seventh.
4:15
Speaker 6: Yes, sir, South Charleston.
4:16
Speaker 3: Done are a little bit of Chelston. All right. I
4:18
Speaker 3: appreciate you as always being on the show. A couple
4:20
Speaker 3: of things I want to talk to you about. First
4:23
Speaker 3: of all, yesterday was inauguration day for new Governor Patrick Morrisey.
4:27
Speaker 3: Thoughts on working we're working with a new governor.
4:30
Speaker 5: You know, again, there's some things we're going to disagree on,
4:32
Speaker 5: some things we agree on, but I'm looking forward to
4:34
Speaker 5: moving moving West Virginia forward and hopefully we can get
4:36
Speaker 5: some stuff done.
4:37
Speaker 3: What are some of the things on your agenda. We'll
4:40
Speaker 3: probably have you on before the session starts, because again
4:42
Speaker 3: a bit of a delay because of the governor coming
4:44
Speaker 3: in it's now going to be February twelfth, but want
4:46
Speaker 3: some things on the Hollis Lewis agenda.
4:48
Speaker 5: Well, again, one thing the Governor I will agree on
4:50
Speaker 5: is teachers. I think we have to figure out a
4:53
Speaker 5: way to raise teachers, pay, to give them more time
4:56
Speaker 5: of me in the classroom, and you know, to improve
4:59
Speaker 5: our children's education overall. So that's definitely one thing I'm
5:02
Speaker 5: looking forward to work with the governor.
5:06
Speaker 3: I talked about this last week, actually talked about it
5:08
Speaker 3: twice last week. I brought it in Fred Persinger, the
5:10
Speaker 3: voice of high school sports in West Virginia. Then I
5:11
Speaker 3: also talked to your counterpart, Delegate Dana Ferrell about this
5:15
Speaker 3: and has to do with the high school transfer role.
5:17
Speaker 3: And you were listening to the show that day. You
5:19
Speaker 3: texted me during the show he said, I'd like to
5:22
Speaker 3: come on and talk about this. And I always make
5:24
Speaker 3: time available for any of the legislators and want to
5:27
Speaker 3: come on. What is it about this you wanted to
5:29
Speaker 3: talk about?
5:30
Speaker 5: Well, again as delicate Ferral highlighted and Fred person can
5:33
Speaker 5: they all highlighted? It's definitely a problem. But I think
5:36
Speaker 5: what we've done we painted ourselves into a corner because
5:39
Speaker 5: we're talking about the Hope Scholarship. You're talking about freedom
5:42
Speaker 5: of choice of school and letting parents do what they
5:44
Speaker 5: want as far as their children of education. We cannot
5:47
Speaker 5: tell parents on one hand, hey, you can send your
5:49
Speaker 5: kid to any school you want, but somehow limit them
5:52
Speaker 5: on the activities that they can play because a parent
5:55
Speaker 5: may be sending their kid to this school or that
5:57
Speaker 5: school for a variety of reasons. That's education plus activity,
6:01
Speaker 5: ban robotics club or sports. So I guess my big
6:05
Speaker 5: question is is that And it's something I've pondered and
6:07
Speaker 5: tried to come up with solutions.
6:08
Speaker 3: What do we do about this? Because I don't see
6:10
Speaker 3: it stopping.
6:10
Speaker 5: I don't know legislative what we can do to stop
6:14
Speaker 5: transfer and when we are allowing kids and parents to
6:17
Speaker 5: choose what school they want to go to and beyond
6:19
Speaker 5: the boundaries or where they live at.
6:20
Speaker 3: So what I'm hearing you say here, and I don't
6:21
Speaker 3: want to put words in your mouth is is And
6:23
Speaker 3: that's an interesting argument or extra interesting point in the
6:27
Speaker 3: whole thing is on one hand, this is your words.
6:30
Speaker 3: On one hand, we're saying parents should have the school
6:32
Speaker 3: choice to be able to send their kids wherever they want.
6:34
Speaker 3: But when it comes to it's like, I guess, not
6:38
Speaker 3: a lot of people seem to care that much about this,
6:41
Speaker 3: or it wasn't top of mind until we started seeing
6:43
Speaker 3: lopsided football scores.
6:45
Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, yeah, it's an effect of what's going on.
6:47
Speaker 5: And again, I want to be clear, I'm definitely pro
6:49
Speaker 5: public education. I support our teachers in public schools. However,
6:53
Speaker 5: I think you know charter schools and you know school
6:55
Speaker 5: choice has its place. But if this is the direction
6:58
Speaker 5: that we're going, can't tell you that you can send
7:01
Speaker 5: your kid any school you want and then try to
7:03
Speaker 5: limit the activities that they participate in said school. That
7:06
Speaker 5: doesn't make sense.
7:08
Speaker 3: We're talking to Delegate to Hollis Lewis for Dave iled
7:10
Speaker 3: Joe and five any line brought to you in part
7:12
Speaker 3: by Pinnacle Consultants. Pinnacle offers four phase assessment for your properties, inspection, sampling,
7:17
Speaker 3: that analysis, comprehensive reporting, the management planning this Pinnacle Court,
7:20
Speaker 3: Pinnacle Court dot net. Because what you don't know can
7:23
Speaker 3: hurt you. So, if anything, do you think the legislature
7:26
Speaker 3: should be involved in this at all? Because there's been
7:28
Speaker 3: other people that have said, hey, this needs much like
7:31
Speaker 3: we saw with other things related to school, this needs
7:33
Speaker 3: to go back to the Secondary School's Activities Commission. They
7:35
Speaker 3: need to work this. That not the legislature. Your take.
7:38
Speaker 5: Again, we've seen what happened when they tried to work
7:40
Speaker 5: it out, right, We've seen what happened with the playoffs
7:42
Speaker 5: and the class reclassifications, and it was a big cluster
7:47
Speaker 5: to say the least this past or the least football season.
7:50
Speaker 5: So I think the legislator or I think we should
7:51
Speaker 5: at least have an opinion. I think we should be
7:53
Speaker 5: able to review it. And I think it's you know,
7:56
Speaker 5: it's something that's going to take all the input possible
8:00
Speaker 5: or to solve. And one of the things that I think,
8:02
Speaker 5: and again, this is something eric A Senator Eric Tarta
8:05
Speaker 5: mentioned he talked about because he was asked the same question, well,
8:08
Speaker 5: how do smaller schools compete? Right, He was asked that,
8:11
Speaker 5: so he said, you know, the coaches have to create
8:14
Speaker 5: an environment in which kids want to come. So I
8:17
Speaker 5: think we need possibly one solution. I'm not saying this
8:20
Speaker 5: is the only solution, but a possible solution is that
8:23
Speaker 5: we need to make coaching positions, particularly in those revenue
8:26
Speaker 5: generating sports. You know, men's basketball, football, women's basketball's positions
8:31
Speaker 5: uninto themselves, right, so they can be salary positions. So
8:35
Speaker 5: cause again, if you're at a smaller school, not only
8:38
Speaker 5: you fighting smaller school budgets and different things like that,
8:40
Speaker 5: you're also fighting your time being a part time coach
8:42
Speaker 5: because you have another forty hour job, family obligations, and
8:45
Speaker 5: whatever else you may have going on. So I think
8:48
Speaker 5: we one solution is that we could possibly make those
8:51
Speaker 5: positions salary positions where that's what you do, similar to
8:55
Speaker 5: how they do it in Texas. In different thingys, particularly
8:58
Speaker 5: southern states throughout the United States, it's.
9:00
Speaker 3: A little bit different than back when I was in school,
9:03
Speaker 3: you know, because and I was in school, your high
9:06
Speaker 3: school football coach was a teacher. You usually saw them money,
9:09
Speaker 3: you know, they were they were the driver. Some now
9:11
Speaker 3: there were, there are a lot of drivers at the
9:13
Speaker 3: teachers job, stuff like that. But you passed the coach
9:18
Speaker 3: in the hall and they would even get on you
9:20
Speaker 3: a little bit and say, are you come to a
9:21
Speaker 3: game tonight or whatever, and that for one reason or another,
9:26
Speaker 3: that kind of went away years ago. It seems like
9:28
Speaker 3: that you know that and you have the coach of
9:30
Speaker 3: this school, is teaching at that school, or as you said,
9:34
Speaker 3: they're they're holding down another forty hour week job there.
9:37
Speaker 3: They're being a nurse, they're being a police officer, whatever
9:40
Speaker 3: it is that they're doing, and then they're going to coach. Now,
9:43
Speaker 3: that's an interesting concert because I don't think I've heard
9:45
Speaker 3: that brought.
9:45
Speaker 5: Up, because I think with my solution again, that coach
9:47
Speaker 5: could still be in the school.
9:49
Speaker 7: Now.
9:49
Speaker 5: You may not be a you know, teaching class. I mean,
9:51
Speaker 5: you may feel some glass, be a sub when somebody's out,
9:53
Speaker 5: maybe do some disciplinary stuff, but you can have your
9:56
Speaker 5: forty hour job in the school. However, your primary is
10:00
Speaker 5: to be the coach of this football or basketball team.
10:03
Speaker 5: And that way you can start to work on budgets,
10:06
Speaker 5: you can go fundraise, you can do all the things
10:08
Speaker 5: that you don't necessarily have time to do when you're
10:11
Speaker 5: doing something else. So I think again, in order to
10:15
Speaker 5: maybe curb that creative balance, because again, you got a
10:18
Speaker 5: lot of guys who know and women too, who know
10:21
Speaker 5: a lot about their sports, who study, who work hard
10:23
Speaker 5: at but again, you only got so much time in
10:25
Speaker 5: the day, right and again when we look at the
10:29
Speaker 5: salary or the stiping that the coaches get it's not
10:32
Speaker 5: that great for the time that they put in.
10:34
Speaker 3: Yeah, I would agree with that most of them. What
10:37
Speaker 3: what do you hear from your constituents on this subject?
10:40
Speaker 5: You know, a large part of my district is South Charleston, right,
10:44
Speaker 5: so nobody has been beat up more by the transporporter
10:48
Speaker 5: than we have. I mean, we went from a perennial
10:50
Speaker 5: championship team and again I coached at South Charleston. I
10:52
Speaker 5: was a coach South Charleston Dunbar for years and years.
10:56
Speaker 5: So we went from a playoff team, perennial champion to
10:59
Speaker 5: we're you know, scoring you know, fourteen twenty one points
11:03
Speaker 5: in the season, winning maybe one or two games.
11:05
Speaker 3: In a season in a scene.
11:07
Speaker 5: And I mean it was rough right when it win
11:09
Speaker 5: in one or two games in the last three, four
11:11
Speaker 5: or five seasons. So again, our our my district architsition
11:15
Speaker 5: definitely want to see a turnaround. We want to offer
11:17
Speaker 5: some solutions as well.
11:19
Speaker 3: Bella at Hollis Lewis, it's always a pleasure to have
11:20
Speaker 3: you in the show. You run up some interesting points
11:22
Speaker 3: today and I always like to have people on that
11:24
Speaker 3: come up with, you know, ideas out of left field.
11:26
Speaker 3: You know, a little bit a little bit different because
11:29
Speaker 3: it's definitely a problem and in a big picture of
11:31
Speaker 3: things people and I've had I've spent you know, a
11:34
Speaker 3: lot of time talking about this issue. And I've had
11:36
Speaker 3: people and I get it, you know the text of
11:38
Speaker 3: the show and said, well, you know, why are you
11:39
Speaker 3: spending so much time talking about athletics. It's this story
11:43
Speaker 3: is not necessarily just about athletics, because you get into
11:47
Speaker 3: a whole community pride thing, and you get it. And
11:50
Speaker 3: when your community, you mentioned South Charleston, when they are decimated,
11:55
Speaker 3: it brings down the whole whole, the whole communities.
11:58
Speaker 6: We talking about two different comunities.
11:59
Speaker 5: And I want to say this, I'm a product, I'm
12:01
Speaker 5: a kid of you know, I went to high school.
12:03
Speaker 5: Academics was not first on my list, you know. I
12:05
Speaker 5: was there and I want to play sports, play football particularly,
12:08
Speaker 5: and that's kind of what got me through. And as
12:10
Speaker 5: I went through high school and then was able to
12:12
Speaker 5: go to college on an athletic scholarship, I figured out, hey,
12:14
Speaker 5: I wouldn't going to the NFL, so my as well,
12:16
Speaker 5: hit these books. So athletics was the conduit for me
12:20
Speaker 5: to get to an academic and which eventually led me
12:22
Speaker 5: to law school. So for the pathway for success for
12:25
Speaker 5: kids is different. So athletics is definitely one of them.
12:27
Speaker 5: So that's why it's important. And then again and it
12:29
Speaker 5: brings the community together. So when you talk about South
12:31
Speaker 5: Charleston High School, we have Dumbare we have South Charleston,
12:34
Speaker 5: two powerful communities that come together and celebrate.
12:36
Speaker 3: So it's important. And sometimes athletics is the only thing
12:39
Speaker 3: that are keeping kids in school hundred percent. And I
12:41
Speaker 3: was a product and you know that again, look at
12:44
Speaker 3: the numbers. They're not going to make it to the NFL.
12:46
Speaker 3: Many aren't going to play a down of organized football
12:49
Speaker 3: out of high school.
12:50
Speaker 6: Hundred percent and anything.
12:52
Speaker 3: Appreciate you being here, man, Thanks a lot, Thank you sir,
12:54
Speaker 3: and have a great session. But don't talk to you

15:50
Speaker 3: a lot of texts to get to. I'm going to
15:52
Speaker 3: spend some time a little bit later on the show
15:54
Speaker 3: talking about some of these vacancies that have come up
15:58
Speaker 3: in the legislature. Now we've got you know, Mark Hunt,
16:02
Speaker 3: who was elected by the people to be the State
16:03
Speaker 3: Auditor that leads his position open, Eric Nelson, who is
16:07
Speaker 3: going to be the new revenue chief for now Governor
16:10
Speaker 3: Patrick Morrissey. So I do have some inside information I
16:13
Speaker 3: want to throw about some of those seats because they're
16:15
Speaker 3: going to have to be filled. I'll throw that out
16:17
Speaker 3: to you a little bit later on. But we did
16:18
Speaker 3: have a text. We said Ernest Blevins is going to
16:21
Speaker 3: be applying for the seventeenth Senate vacancy. He's been a
16:24
Speaker 3: candidate on more than one occasions, and so I don't
16:27
Speaker 3: know that he texted the show. I'm gonna say probably
16:29
Speaker 3: came from Ernest, but that's okay. He wanted us though
16:32
Speaker 3: he's going to be applying, and wish him the best
16:35
Speaker 3: of luck. Let me see, Okay, I'm gonna hold off
16:42
Speaker 3: on I got a bunch of texts. I'm gonna hold
16:44
Speaker 3: off on this a little bit later on the show.
16:45
Speaker 3: I will get to those texts, I promise, but I
16:47
Speaker 3: want to give this gentleman his his time in the spotlight.
16:50
Speaker 3: Last week, Charleston City Council met and among the action
16:52
Speaker 3: items taken was the naming of a new city councilman
16:55
Speaker 3: from Ward fifteen, the previous holder of that Sam Minardi
16:58
Speaker 3: reside to take his place as Harper Gardner, and he
17:01
Speaker 3: joins us this morning, councilman, good morning, welcome to the showy.
17:04
Speaker 6: Day of good morning. How are you now?
17:05
Speaker 3: Have you officially been sworn into? That happened to me
17:07
Speaker 3: last year?
17:07
Speaker 6: So I can call you council last Thursday the ninth,
17:10
Speaker 6: I was sworning right during first party Council.
17:12
Speaker 3: Okay, all right, so tell us about Harper Gardener.
17:14
Speaker 6: So born and raised here. The last time I was here,
17:17
Speaker 6: we were trying to figure out all of us how
17:20
Speaker 6: to say big lely piggly wiggly all at the same time.
17:23
Speaker 3: Challenge it a challenge.
17:25
Speaker 6: So born and raised here, have two kids. I ran
17:28
Speaker 6: for this seat, this Ward seat, two years ago, lost
17:31
Speaker 6: by one hundred and three votes. So I was honored
17:34
Speaker 6: to be appointed by the Mayor and Council to be
17:37
Speaker 6: able to fill this seat from Sam who his dedication
17:39
Speaker 6: to service to the city over the last decade plus
17:42
Speaker 6: was really incredible. Some big shoes to fill.
17:44
Speaker 3: Now explain District fifteen. I'm sorry Ward fifteen.
17:47
Speaker 6: Ward fifteen, So generally speaking, Ward fifteen is the backside
17:51
Speaker 6: of South Hills. It is Clark Road to City limits
17:54
Speaker 6: and then Connell Rode down. I do have some on
17:57
Speaker 6: the front of the hill, like I go Downbridge Road
18:00
Speaker 6: to that Chiropractor office right there, cross from the Bridge Road,
18:03
Speaker 6: Marts right there, and then all of Overbrook Road and
18:07
Speaker 6: then Ravina and then where I am up on Observatory.
18:09
Speaker 6: So I've got all four schools up there, Holtz, John Adams,
18:13
Speaker 6: GW and Overbrook.
18:15
Speaker 3: Tell me on that district. What makes that district so good?
18:18
Speaker 3: You chose to live there, So tell me what makes
18:21
Speaker 3: your district the best in the city. One of the
18:23
Speaker 3: because you're going to have to say that if you're
18:26
Speaker 3: going to say you're I mean, I'm kidding, because I
18:27
Speaker 3: know you, sir as You're a council person. You serve
18:29
Speaker 3: the entire city. But what is the selling point for
18:32
Speaker 3: your area.
18:32
Speaker 6: One of the neat things. It's the educational hub for
18:34
Speaker 6: most of Charleston. So you know, not only the feeder
18:37
Speaker 6: schools for the George Washington School District, which I believe
18:39
Speaker 6: is the one of the best schools in the state,
18:41
Speaker 6: let alone the city. The other thing is it's a
18:44
Speaker 6: very highly residential zone. There's very few businesses, which is
18:47
Speaker 6: a really unique set of challenges that we're really solely
18:51
Speaker 6: focused on providing services to residents, which is when you
18:55
Speaker 6: break it down, that's what the city should be doing,
18:57
Speaker 6: is making the city work better for its residents.
19:00
Speaker 3: Again, we're talking to Harper Gardner, who is the new
19:03
Speaker 3: city councilman out of Ward fifteen. I want to talk
19:06
Speaker 3: about Charleston, the city of Charleston, Harper as a whole.
19:10
Speaker 3: It has his problems, as do all cities, but also
19:12
Speaker 3: a lot of a lot of good things going on. So, well,
19:15
Speaker 3: have you played salesman again, because that's kind of what
19:17
Speaker 3: you do in your prodit.
19:18
Speaker 6: That's exactly what I do. Yeah, yeah, I work in sales,
19:21
Speaker 6: always have and so I don't I don't believe in problems.
19:24
Speaker 6: I believe in opportunities. So Charleston does have some opportunity.
19:27
Speaker 3: So when you're out and about and people talk to
19:30
Speaker 3: you about the city of Charleston and you're from here,
19:33
Speaker 3: and they say, well, why why should I consider moving
19:36
Speaker 3: my family to Charleston? Why should I consider doing business
19:39
Speaker 3: in Charleston? What do you tell them?
19:40
Speaker 2: Well?
19:41
Speaker 6: I tell them that, one, you know, our geographic location,
19:43
Speaker 6: we are absolutely blessed to be right here on this river.
19:46
Speaker 6: All the amazing recreational opportunities here. I also believe that
19:50
Speaker 6: Charleston can be and should be a hub for remote work.
19:53
Speaker 6: Remote work has become even more popular. If you can
19:55
Speaker 6: do it anywhere in the world, why not do it
19:57
Speaker 6: right here. So we're really poised, especially with the expansion
20:01
Speaker 6: of downtown, the increased opportunities for recreation, the increased educational opportunities,
20:06
Speaker 6: and the increased entertainment opportunities that we've got downtown. We
20:10
Speaker 6: really have what, you know, something for everybody coming into
20:14
Speaker 6: the valley. What's on your to do list as a
20:16
Speaker 6: city councilor one in the you know, four days that
20:20
Speaker 6: I've been on council, what a might to do list
20:23
Speaker 6: is to continue the agenda of a very transparent financial
20:27
Speaker 6: system within the within the city, working with Ben the
20:31
Speaker 6: Treasurer and Mayor Amy Goodwin in her administration to make
20:34
Speaker 6: sure that it is the most transparent, because I really
20:37
Speaker 6: do have a very deep seated understanding that every dime
20:40
Speaker 6: the city spends is a taxpayer dollar. It is it
20:44
Speaker 6: is money that is extracted through taxes that that funds us.
20:48
Speaker 6: So I'm very aware of that and I very much
20:50
Speaker 6: want to make sure that that's all in the up
20:52
Speaker 6: and up and super transparent. The other thing I want
20:54
Speaker 6: to do is I want to keep increasing the amount
20:57
Speaker 6: of programming and productivity downtown. We've got to have a
20:59
Speaker 6: really reinvigorated downtown that works for everybody.
21:06
Speaker 2: I do.
21:06
Speaker 3: I need to throw this in here to day Vallance

Speaker 3: showing five any Live brought to you part by Husband's

21:19
Speaker 3: hit you with a couple of topics here and just
21:22
Speaker 3: get your opinion on. First of all, it's talk about
21:24
Speaker 3: the Capitol Sports Complex, the proposed I understand now we
21:27
Speaker 3: can't call it Capital Sports Complex because that's trademarked by
21:30
Speaker 3: somebody else, but the sports center in question without a
21:33
Speaker 3: name at.
21:33
Speaker 6: This point, the sports center formally known as the Capital
21:36
Speaker 6: Sports Complex.
21:36
Speaker 3: What do you think? What do you think?
21:37
Speaker 6: I think it's gonna be amazing if we can get
21:40
Speaker 6: this thing belt and get the people in place and
21:43
Speaker 6: get the scheduling. In sports storism, is an amazing source
21:47
Speaker 6: of revenue. One of the you know, every hotel stay
21:51
Speaker 6: generates an enormous amount of money in downtown Charleston and
21:54
Speaker 6: in Charleston City limits in general, not just the taxes
21:56
Speaker 6: and fees through the hotels, but you know, you've got
21:59
Speaker 6: to eat three times a day, so those are really
22:01
Speaker 6: wonderful opportunities. I think that the AAU basketball tournament opportunities
22:05
Speaker 6: not And you know, the other side of that is
22:07
Speaker 6: the other side of my career. I spent a lot
22:08
Speaker 6: of time in senior fitness, senior activities, and senior recreation.
22:11
Speaker 6: Being able to have those indoor pickleball courts that we've
22:13
Speaker 6: been talking about there too, is also going to be
22:15
Speaker 6: amazing for the city of Charleston. But that sports tourism
22:18
Speaker 6: is really going to really electrify that area of town
22:21
Speaker 6: and really start driving some big revenues in.
22:23
Speaker 3: I want to talk about tourism in general. I mean
22:26
Speaker 3: you mentioned because we the proposed formerly Artists formally known
22:29
Speaker 3: as the Capital Sports Complex. I know what we've got
22:32
Speaker 3: going on, not just in downtown Charleston, but around the
22:34
Speaker 3: areas think Shawnee in places like that. We had the
22:36
Speaker 3: road race, the bikes you know that were in town.
22:38
Speaker 3: That was the most probably one of the single most
22:40
Speaker 3: incredible things that I have ever seen. The return of
22:43
Speaker 3: Regatta a couple of years ago. How do we put
22:46
Speaker 3: more into tourism and make people want to come here.
22:50
Speaker 6: I think Charleston Convention Invents Visitors Bureau is doing such
22:54
Speaker 6: a fabulous job about finding and bringing these events here.
22:57
Speaker 6: That bike race, like you said, was incredible watching and
23:00
Speaker 6: the way that they used the entire city. That was
23:03
Speaker 6: not just a downtown event where I am up in
23:06
Speaker 6: South Hills. We were stationed along the road. There are
23:08
Speaker 6: people along the road the whole way through South Hills
23:11
Speaker 6: and affected those businesses, the you know, the Bridge Road
23:13
Speaker 6: shops and those bars and restaurants definitely got a boost
23:16
Speaker 6: from people watching them run through the Hills. So those
23:19
Speaker 6: things are are really incredible. Again, Regatta has been you
23:22
Speaker 6: know that those numbers are incredible, and you've been down
23:25
Speaker 6: to Regatta, I mean it's wall to wall people For
23:27
Speaker 6: what people complained before Regatta were kind of off acts.
23:31
Speaker 6: This past year, it was still packed and I think,
23:33
Speaker 6: you know, everybody had a really good time. So continuing
23:36
Speaker 6: those things, finding those unique things like that bike race
23:39
Speaker 6: that you know, personally, I had never I'm not a cyclist,
23:42
Speaker 6: I you know, didn't know about that before. But now
23:44
Speaker 6: that it's here, it's incredible. So we've got to keep
23:47
Speaker 6: finding those kind of outside the box opportunities to bring
23:49
Speaker 6: people to showcase this, this jewel that we are right
23:52
Speaker 6: here on the Kanaal River and Appalacha.
23:53
Speaker 3: I talked to several business owners downtown, you know from
23:56
Speaker 3: time to time, and they say that despite the issues
24:01
Speaker 3: of downtown Charleston, then you hear the complaints or whatever.
24:04
Speaker 3: A couple of them had record years and in twenty
24:07
Speaker 3: twenty four, So I don't know what that says, but
24:10
Speaker 3: it says that despite what you may have heard, people
24:13
Speaker 3: are still coming to downtown Charleston.
24:15
Speaker 6: You know, I think people for the first time in
24:17
Speaker 6: a long time, people feel safer downtown than they used to.
24:22
Speaker 6: You know, the lighting's better, We've done a better job
24:24
Speaker 6: with maintenance. City patrols seem to be better downtown. It
24:28
Speaker 6: just it feels safer, nicer, brighter, in a place for families.
24:32
Speaker 3: You know, all of the.
24:33
Speaker 6: Development with Brawley Walkway and the new City Center, that's
24:36
Speaker 6: all very family friendly. That's not late night bars that
24:40
Speaker 6: you know that don't serve, you know, families with kids.
24:43
Speaker 6: So I think that's really important of why downtown has
24:47
Speaker 6: felt so revitalized.
24:49
Speaker 3: Talk about a couple of the issues. I mean, you
24:51
Speaker 3: hear about that, and I know that one of the
24:52
Speaker 3: things you guys, you folks on city Council and the
24:55
Speaker 3: may are going to be looking at is this proposed
24:57
Speaker 3: panhandling ordinance. It's been it's been grown out there about
25:01
Speaker 3: this particular situation.
25:04
Speaker 10: I know.
25:04
Speaker 3: I've had Counselman Robinson on the show in the past
25:06
Speaker 3: and they're going to have continue to have discussions about
25:10
Speaker 3: this in twenty twenty five about a proposed panhandling ordinance.
25:14
Speaker 3: But now this would not just impact you know, the
25:17
Speaker 3: gas standing there with a sign asking for money. This
25:19
Speaker 3: could also impact the sports team, you know, but it's
25:22
Speaker 3: out there, that's depending on where they're standing. That seems
25:25
Speaker 3: to be the thing, the safety issue. Where are you
25:27
Speaker 3: on all that?
25:28
Speaker 6: So that's that was last broughtz Council two meetings before me.
25:33
Speaker 6: But I've read it. I've read the revise when it's
25:35
Speaker 6: back down to committee now it's been largely cleaned up.
25:38
Speaker 6: But you're right, there aren't in the current draft of
25:41
Speaker 6: what is in Rules in public what's been sent to
25:44
Speaker 6: rules in public safety. There aren't exemptions for politicians to
25:49
Speaker 6: hold signs, fill the boot drives, my son's boy Scout troop,
25:54
Speaker 6: asking for donations for their car wash that they do annually,
25:57
Speaker 6: those kind of things. There aren't those kind of exemptions,
25:59
Speaker 6: and I do under saying what they're doing, because you know,
26:01
Speaker 6: as you as you come on and off the constant
26:04
Speaker 6: panhandling in the you know, the entrances and egresses of
26:09
Speaker 6: the city do kind of pose a danger. If you're
26:11
Speaker 6: coming off at thirty miles an hour at the Partia
26:13
Speaker 6: Street exit coming off the interstate and somebody quick stops
26:16
Speaker 6: in front of you at hand somebody some money, that
26:19
Speaker 6: does pose kind of a public safety issue. So I
26:22
Speaker 6: really do look forward to working with counsel. I will
26:25
Speaker 6: be attending those committee meetings as it's discussed, So you know,
26:29
Speaker 6: I definitely am going to have my pulse finger on
26:31
Speaker 6: the pulse of this one and we'll see how it goes.
26:33
Speaker 3: I was having some conversation last night with another councilman,
26:36
Speaker 3: Sean Taylor, who I'm going to have on the show.
26:38
Speaker 3: I think he sent me a text. I think it's
26:40
Speaker 3: Friday I think I'll have to go back to and
26:42
Speaker 3: take a look at that. But about the municipal auditorium,
26:45
Speaker 3: what are we going to do with the municipal auditorium.
26:47
Speaker 3: There's been studies done that says, look, it's cheaper and
26:50
Speaker 3: just to raise this thing and maybe start anew and
26:52
Speaker 3: then others because of the historical significance, don't want to
26:57
Speaker 3: go that route. I know you're new. I hate to
26:59
Speaker 3: hit you with all these things the top. No, no,
27:00
Speaker 3: I'm glad, but but do you have an opinion on that?
27:03
Speaker 6: So my very first vote on city Council was actually
27:05
Speaker 6: to approve a study to look at being able to
27:09
Speaker 6: keep the facade. So we'll obviously see more as this
27:12
Speaker 6: study comes in, this engineering and architectural study comes in,
27:16
Speaker 6: but they're they're looking to see if, because the enormous
27:20
Speaker 6: amount of public output was to try to keep the facade,
27:23
Speaker 6: that that twenties retro kind of modern design on the
27:30
Speaker 6: front is what everybody really wanted to keep. The understanding
27:33
Speaker 6: is is the building behind it largely can't be So
27:36
Speaker 6: if we can keep that facade, we'll do it. If not,
27:39
Speaker 6: I firmly believe the city is going to be able
27:41
Speaker 6: to put something that's going to be game changing incredible
27:45
Speaker 6: in there for the city. Either way, being able to
27:47
Speaker 6: expand the footprint make it more appealing to modern artists
27:51
Speaker 6: to come through. So we're going to be able to
27:52
Speaker 6: get those mid sized artists that aren't necessarily going to
27:56
Speaker 6: sell out the Colisseum Bowl, but be able to still
27:59
Speaker 6: have a thirty five hundred see auditorium, but then still
28:01
Speaker 6: be able to scale that down to a thousand seat
28:03
Speaker 6: for children's theater. So I firmly believe that once we
28:07
Speaker 6: get through this kind of architectural study and we then
28:10
Speaker 6: know what we're working with, the city's gonna be able
28:12
Speaker 6: to put together something incredible for that property.
28:15
Speaker 3: Chusta City Council and in Harpergardner, what's the best way
28:17
Speaker 3: for people to get in touch with you? You get
28:18
Speaker 3: an email address or anything you want to throw out there.
28:20
Speaker 6: Absolutely, so you know again I'm a big believer in transparency.
28:24
Speaker 6: I give you my personal email address. It's on the
28:26

32:16
Speaker 3: going to get into some of those right now. Going
32:19
Speaker 3: back to the high school transfer rule, I was talking
32:20
Speaker 3: to Delegate Hollis Lewis a little bit earlier in the show.
32:23
Speaker 3: Text says I would offer that the difference between the
32:27
Speaker 3: academics and the programs like athletics are not that academics.
32:32
Speaker 3: Hold on, I totally screwed that. Let me start that again.
32:34
Speaker 3: Take two. Text says I would offer that the difference
32:37
Speaker 3: between the academics and the programs like athletics are that
32:40
Speaker 3: academics are mandatory and athletics are not. So if you're
32:44
Speaker 3: truly transferring for academics as a priority, maybe athletics needs
32:48
Speaker 3: to take a step back in its proper place, says
32:52
Speaker 3: a texture. Uh text says these text are kind of
32:56
Speaker 3: all over the place. That would be a trick for
32:59
Speaker 3: Morrissey to raise teacher pay concerning he's going to expand
33:03
Speaker 3: to the idiot Hope scholarship that does nothing save money
33:06
Speaker 3: away from public schools and gift to people that don't
33:08
Speaker 3: want their children educated, the unschooled or rich white people
33:12
Speaker 3: that have to have a private school to begin with,
33:15
Speaker 3: says a text. Texas Dave. I remember several years ago
33:22
Speaker 3: when the major repair was made to the Fort Hill Bridge,
33:24
Speaker 3: an official with the Department of Highways said, quote repair
33:27
Speaker 3: would never have to be done again, Well, it's being
33:29
Speaker 3: done today and again. If you missed the first part
33:32
Speaker 3: of the show, and you miss Jeff Jenkins newscast, they
33:34
Speaker 3: have got rolling I understand again I'm sending him a
33:37
Speaker 3: little studio here, so I really can't see it, but
33:39
Speaker 3: I understand that they are scheduling rolling roadblocks in the
33:42
Speaker 3: area coming to to Charleston around Oakwood Road because there
33:45
Speaker 3: are some massive, massive potholes. And again I was one
33:49
Speaker 3: of those that was doing three miles an hour, you know,
33:51
Speaker 3: coming to Charleston this morning around seven thirty or so
33:54
Speaker 3: when I saw one of those, and my vehicle doesn't
33:57
Speaker 3: set that high off the ground, and I was like, yeah,
34:00
Speaker 3: I go in that and it's going to be like
34:02
Speaker 3: a cartoon or like smoking the bandit. You're just going
34:05
Speaker 3: to see the trunk part of my vehicle, you know,
34:08
Speaker 3: sticking out. So just use caution. You have been warned
34:11
Speaker 3: about the traffic issues around Charleston today, Dave says, a texture,
34:18
Speaker 3: you're going to mention the five million dollars in taxpayer
34:20
Speaker 3: dollars the West Virginia Water authority is given to the
34:23
Speaker 3: Catholic Church in Ohio. Why is taxpayer dollars going to
34:26
Speaker 3: a religious organization, much less one out of state so
34:28
Speaker 3: they can expand their footprint and indoctrination. Unconstitutional perhaps, And
34:34
Speaker 3: why does the Catholic Church need taxpayer money? Don't they
34:37
Speaker 3: have billions and assets and pillaged gold. Big thanks to
34:40
Speaker 3: the ACLU for defending the constitution and looking out for
34:43
Speaker 3: West Virginians. Well, I have talked about it on the show.
34:46
Speaker 3: A matter of fact, I will say this. I'll get
34:48
Speaker 3: a little preview to the guys that come after me,
34:51
Speaker 3: Dave Wilson and TJ Meadows hosting talk Line coming up
34:54
Speaker 3: at ten o six, and TJ will do a run
34:56
Speaker 3: in here as he always does, at the end of
34:57
Speaker 3: this show. But I can say that they are going
35:00
Speaker 3: to talk about it in depth today. As a matter
35:02
Speaker 3: of fact, I do believe that State Democratic Party Chair
35:05
Speaker 3: and delicate Mike Pushkin is going to weigh in on
35:07
Speaker 3: the subject again. We have a story posted about it
35:09
Speaker 3: on the website. The ACLU has filed a lawsuit, and
35:13
Speaker 3: I got some notes on that. I'll get into a
35:14
Speaker 3: little bit later on if we get time, But yeah,
35:16
Speaker 3: it's going to be discussed in full. I mentioned it
35:18
Speaker 3: a little last week. These guys are going to do
35:20
Speaker 3: a deep dive on it on talk Line coming up
35:22
Speaker 3: at ten six. Tex says, Dave, did you see the
35:25
Speaker 3: inauguration of Morrissey. I'll step in and say I did.
35:29
Speaker 3: It looked like low energy, empty and depressing, foreshadowing for
35:32
Speaker 3: the next four years. I suppose.
35:33
Speaker 9: Yeah.
35:34
Speaker 3: I wasn't in attendance in person, but I did watch
35:37
Speaker 3: it on metroduced TV. I don't know a Pine on
35:40
Speaker 3: a couple of things on that coming up a little
35:42
Speaker 3: bit later on Tex says your guest City Council and
35:45
Speaker 3: Harper Gardner must have missed the memo on remote work,
35:48
Speaker 3: middle management and office real estate space need a use.
35:51
Speaker 3: So remote work is going to be a thing of
35:53
Speaker 3: the past. It is going to be a thing of
35:54
Speaker 3: the pass in some areas. But I think you can't
35:57
Speaker 3: put the milk back in the container, as they say.
36:01
Speaker 3: Coming up on Tomor's show, our good friend nutrition expert
36:03
Speaker 3: Millie Snyder is going to be here. Greg Thomas will
36:05
Speaker 3: be here to talk about some politics and whatever else
36:08
Speaker 3: is on the mind of mister Thomas. Also, John Carruthers
36:11
Speaker 3: of Best Virginia Heating and Cooling will be stopping by,
36:14
Speaker 3: you know, not so much talking about what a great
36:16
Speaker 3: company they are. They are, by the way, a great company,
36:19
Speaker 3: but he has a program this company does to help
36:21
Speaker 3: those who may be having a little trouble with their
36:23
Speaker 3: heating and cooling systems. It's a great program. We're going
36:27
Speaker 3: to get into that with John Caruthers coming up on
36:28
Speaker 3: the show tomorrow. Plus, your calls and texts are welcome
36:31
Speaker 3: to do want to remind you about the upcoming WVRC
36:34
Speaker 3: Media Sock Drop which is happening one week from this
36:37

36:42
Speaker 3: even have to get out of your car. We're going
36:44
Speaker 3: to have our staff on the lot all day to
36:47
Speaker 3: collect your donations of new socks. And as we talked
36:50
Speaker 3: about yesterday, there are several places that you can get
36:53
Speaker 3: good quality, inexpensive socks. Marshall's Olly's had a listener to
36:59
Speaker 3: the show yesterday who texted me that are good friends
37:03
Speaker 3: at eight is the outlet and Jefferson had some affordably
37:05
Speaker 3: priced heated socks, so that could be a place for
37:09
Speaker 3: you to pick up some socks as well. All of
37:11
Speaker 3: our stations are involved in it across the board. It's
37:14
Speaker 3: going to be Thursday the twenty third, one week from
37:17
Speaker 3: this Thursday, seven am till six pm on our lot
37:20
Speaker 3: eleven eleven Virginia Street East in Charleston. And a big
37:22
Speaker 3: shout out to the folks that panhandle cleaning the restoration
37:25
Speaker 3: for making it all possible. But Dave Allen showing five

37:46
Speaker 3: check Living New Deal dot org for some more about
37:51
Speaker 3: the auditorium history as part of the New Deal, says
37:54
Speaker 3: a texture. It says Texas Dave, it was so great
37:59
Speaker 3: to hear chance of USA USA erupt from The audience
38:03
Speaker 3: contained a lot of military members as Pete Hegseth and
38:06
Speaker 3: his family enter the room for his Defense Secretary Senate confirmation.
38:09
Speaker 3: Hearing sounds like members of the US military have decided
38:12
Speaker 3: who they want representing them, says a Texture. Tex says,
38:18
Speaker 3: I hope everyone understands after the events in Los Angeles
38:21
Speaker 3: this week, the homelessness is not a choice. It's devastating
38:24
Speaker 3: whoever you are, for whatever reason you find yourself on
38:26
Speaker 3: the streets. Instead of viewing the unhoused with scorn, maybe
38:29
Speaker 3: we could all pull together more to help them, like
38:33
Speaker 3: everyone's doing for the people of LA. I've made my
38:39
Speaker 3: opinions on that known in the past, you can't tell me.
38:44
Speaker 3: And if you talk to people that deal with the
38:46
Speaker 3: homeless on a regular basis, you can't tell me that
38:48
Speaker 3: every one of them is there because they have nowhere
38:51
Speaker 3: else to go. There are people that do choose that lifestyle.
38:53
Speaker 3: And if you are saying that there aren't people that
38:56
Speaker 3: choose that lifestyle, then you are greatly mistaken. Again all cases,
39:00
Speaker 3: I'm saying, there are those that do make do make
39:03
Speaker 3: that choice. So now we have a new governor. Actually,
39:06
Speaker 3: Governor Patrick Morrissey was sworn in at midnight Sunday slash Monday,
39:11
Speaker 3: but all the ceremonial stuff took place yesterday. The inaugur
39:15
Speaker 3: ball held last night, the parades, et cetera, et cetera.
39:18
Speaker 3: As I mentioned earlier, I watched the governor's speech yesterday
39:21
Speaker 3: morning on Metro News TV cheap Plug and we had
39:25
Speaker 3: the whole thing live on the on the air as well.
39:29
Speaker 3: You know, the speech I thought was pretty much what
39:31
Speaker 3: you would expect. And I don't say that in a
39:33
Speaker 3: negative way. I don't, but it was just pretty much
39:37
Speaker 3: what you would expect. It's a row ross Beach saying
39:39
Speaker 3: we're going to go to work, and that's you know,
39:41
Speaker 3: we got things we got to do. By the way,
39:43
Speaker 3: I will throw this out there. Governor Morrissey has a
39:46
Speaker 3: press conference coming up at eleven I think it is
39:50
Speaker 3: eleven this morning, will of course be covering that. But
39:54
Speaker 3: I think he's gonna actually take questions from the press live.
39:58
Speaker 9: Live.
40:00
Speaker 3: We'll see. But I think that's the plan. But the
40:02
Speaker 3: speech itself a couple of things that I thought we
40:06
Speaker 3: were interesting. One talking about getting read of de I
40:11
Speaker 3: and look, I've made my my thoughts on most most
40:15
Speaker 3: de I programs known in the past. Nothing no new
40:19
Speaker 3: ground for me here. I don't I don't. I don't
40:24
Speaker 3: know that it's a major issue for West Virginia. But
40:26
Speaker 3: but but okay, now, if he means in relation to
40:29
Speaker 3: let's say, West Virginia University or Marshall, okay, you know, fine,
40:34
Speaker 3: I'm you know, I'm okay with looking at all that.
40:38
Speaker 3: But it almost and maybe I just read it wrong.
40:42
Speaker 3: It almost made it sound like the whole DEI thing
40:46
Speaker 3: was being practiced by the Justice Administration, which which certainly
40:50
Speaker 3: it it was it was not. But something else I
40:54
Speaker 3: found very interesting. Two minutes or so uh into into
41:01
Speaker 3: the speech, he felt the need the governor felt the
41:05
Speaker 3: need to take a shot in the media the media, Like,
41:11
Speaker 3: what exactly do you mean when you say the media?
41:15
Speaker 3: And speaking as a member of the media, again, I
41:18
Speaker 3: always point out I'm not a journalist by any stretch
41:21
Speaker 3: of the imagination. I'm just a guy who gets paid
41:23
Speaker 3: to talk. I don't have an issue with Governor Morrissey
41:29
Speaker 3: saying that, obviously.
41:30
Speaker 2: I just.
41:32
Speaker 3: I just wish sometimes that he and others who decry
41:34
Speaker 3: the media would just say, what media members you're talking about?
41:40
Speaker 3: I mean, there isn't some big, giant downtown Charleston office
41:45
Speaker 3: that's called the media where we all congregate to think
41:50
Speaker 3: of ways to screw over government officials, regardless of party. Now,
41:55
Speaker 3: if he was referring to the national media, then say
41:59
Speaker 3: national media. If he meant the gazette mail, then say
42:02
Speaker 3: gazette mail. And if he even somebody pointed out to
42:07
Speaker 3: me this morning, what if he said liberal media. Okay, okay,
42:11
Speaker 3: I'm fine with that as well. Uh, And please don't
42:14
Speaker 3: confuse some of the commentators that you read on x
42:17
Speaker 3: or some podcasters as the media. You know, we're all different,
42:22
Speaker 3: just like all members of government are different.
42:24
Speaker 2: You know.
42:24
Speaker 3: Maybe not a big deal to some, but I just
42:26
Speaker 3: loathed the fact when people say the media, uh, you know,
42:30
Speaker 3: be specific as to what media you are talking about,
42:34
Speaker 3: and if it's one of the TV stations or me
42:37
Speaker 3: or whatever, just just come on say it. Just hold
42:43
Speaker 3: the media. I just I don't get him, tex says Dave.
42:51
Speaker 3: A homeless man died from the cold Saturday on the
42:53
Speaker 3: streets of Charleston. Yeah. I talked about that. It's a
42:54
Speaker 3: tragic story. Did he choose to die? We need to
42:57
Speaker 3: do more. I don't know the specifics of the case. Ps.
43:01
Speaker 3: I work with the homeless mentle Hill and addicted every day.
43:03
Speaker 3: We still can do more, says a text Texas. Jesus

43:10
Speaker 3: five million dollars. Why Camp mcgainn and his out of
43:14

43:22
Speaker 3: I think rich Rod now has more stress for returning

43:27

Speaker 8: keep more of their hard earned paychecks. While the recent
45:41
Speaker 8: work of the legislature has taken enormous strides toward breaking
45:45
Speaker 8: down the barriers that hold our citizens back, now is
45:48
Speaker 8: not the time to rest on our laurels. Instead, we
45:51

Speaker 3: Six minutes away from ten Big Bigley Wiggly hotline three
46:18
Speaker 3: zero four three four five fifty eight fifty eight. Tony
46:20
Speaker 3: of Taylor texts three zero four nine three five five
46:23
Speaker 3: zero zero eight, Tex says Dave, I'm confused. Are you
46:26
Speaker 3: the media, the liberal media, or the national media? Well, okay,
46:29
Speaker 3: let me start with the last one. National media. No, no,
46:32
Speaker 3: although we do have listeners around the country because of
46:35
Speaker 3: the magic of apps. We do have people that listen
46:37
Speaker 3: in other states. But no, I'm not national. Am I
46:40
Speaker 3: the liberal media?
46:41
Speaker 5: No?
46:43
Speaker 3: Are you the media? I guess I'm a member of
46:47
Speaker 3: the media. I'm just a member of it, I guess.
46:51
Speaker 3: But Dave Allen showing five any line broads you're barre
46:52
Speaker 3: by Morgan to Morgan if you're injured hired Morgan to
46:54
Speaker 3: Morgan in America's largest injury law firm. Yesterday on the show,
46:57
Speaker 3: I was talking about some of the seats that will
46:59
Speaker 3: be open in the state's due to the election of
47:01
Speaker 3: Mark Hunt as state auditor and the appointment of Eric
47:04
Speaker 3: Nelson to be the new state Revenue Secretary OAT or
47:07
Speaker 3: Governor Morrissey. I did confirm and talked to him last night.
47:09
Speaker 3: Kenawa County Commissioner Lance Wheeler says he's highly interested in
47:15
Speaker 3: the seat that was held by now state Auditor Mark Hunt.
47:18
Speaker 3: Now we will be following the story, maybe talk to
47:21
Speaker 3: Lance on the show soon, but he did say he
47:23
Speaker 3: was highly interested, So I got confirmation from mister Wheeler
47:28
Speaker 3: about that last night, so we shall see. I am
47:30
Speaker 3: also hearing all kinds of other names being thrown out there.
47:33
Speaker 3: As I said on the show yesterday, some names you've
47:35
Speaker 3: heard of that are interested or possibly interested in some
47:37
Speaker 3: open seats. I've heard the name more Capito being thrown
47:40
Speaker 3: out there. I've heard Mark Carter, who ran for District
47:45
Speaker 3: fifty seven House and was defeated possibly, So it's just
47:47
Speaker 3: going to be an interesting watch for sure. TJ. Meadows,
47:54
Speaker 3: what's up? How are you doing?
47:55
Speaker 5: Man?
47:55
Speaker 7: People are going to be coveting that Nelson seat because
47:58
Speaker 7: that's a four year unexpired term he's handing over.
48:01
Speaker 3: Yeah, you and I were talking about that in the
48:02
Speaker 3: office early because he was just elected to that position. So,
48:06
Speaker 3: but going back to the other one again. I talked
48:07
Speaker 3: to County Commissioner Lance Wheeler last night and told him
48:11
Speaker 3: what he'd heard, and he was at the inauguration at
48:14
Speaker 3: some point yesterday. He said, yeah, I've been hearing it
48:15
Speaker 3: all day, and I guess he considers it a compliment
48:18
Speaker 3: that people would think that, you know, he but but
48:20
Speaker 3: he did say he was interested. Now that't does that
48:22
Speaker 3: mean he's going to quit his job and go you know, no,
48:24
Speaker 3: he just said he had an interest. And look, I
48:26
Speaker 3: don't blame him. I mean, you know, being being Canaw
48:28
Speaker 3: County commissioner is a very coveted position. The voters put
48:31
Speaker 3: him in office. But at the same time, Lance is
48:34
Speaker 3: a relatively young guy with I think it's safe to
48:36
Speaker 3: say some pretty big political aspirations at some point. He's
48:40
Speaker 3: not an old guy like I am, so he's looking forward,
48:43
Speaker 3: not backwards. So you know, he's got some aspirations. It
48:46
Speaker 3: could be a good position for him if he decides
48:48
Speaker 3: he wants to go that route, and if the people,
48:50
Speaker 3: you know, they go through the whole process, Executive Committee
48:52
Speaker 3: s tomit names to the governor, and the governor chooses.
48:54
Speaker 7: So could be a good move for him if it
48:56
Speaker 7: goes that far. Highly qualified guy. We'll see what happens.
48:59
Speaker 3: All right, what's on the big show today? So coming
49:01
Speaker 3: up today we started ten oh six with Brad. He's
49:03
Speaker 3: going to be in. We're going to, of course recap
49:05
Speaker 3: the inauguration.
49:06
Speaker 7: I'm sure we'll maybe speculate a little bit about this
49:08
Speaker 7: presser at eleven that Governor Morrisey has coming up and
49:12
Speaker 7: back up.
49:13
Speaker 3: I said this earlier. I don't know if you were
49:15
Speaker 3: listening or not. Is he actually taking questions? I mean
49:18
Speaker 3: live questions? That is my understanding. What a novel concept.
49:24
Speaker 3: But yeah, we'll wait and see. Okay, well, and you
49:27
Speaker 3: may get to ask a follow up too.
49:28
Speaker 7: I don't I don't know how that will work, but
49:30
Speaker 7: at any rate, Brad, I'll be on and we'll we'll
49:32
Speaker 7: talk about all things Governor Morrissey, and maybe again get
49:34
Speaker 7: into some speculation more on my part in Dave's part,
49:37
Speaker 7: probably not Brad on what we'll come out of this
49:39
Speaker 7: pressor today at eleven o'clock. Could it be DEI that
49:43
Speaker 7: that an executive order on DEI. Could it be something
49:46
Speaker 7: to do with all of these commissions and committees that
49:48
Speaker 7: he talked about.
49:49
Speaker 3: He's talked about government being bloated and I'm kind of
49:52
Speaker 3: using I'm paraphrasing there, but he's talked about state government
49:54
Speaker 3: being bloated and that we got to cut we got
49:57
Speaker 3: to cut the fat, as they say, yeah, depending on
49:58
Speaker 3: what it is.
49:59
Speaker 7: One of the interest things for me here is, you know,
50:02
Speaker 7: governors typically issue executive orders states of emergency COVID response
50:06
Speaker 7: to these kinds of things. But those are practical problems
50:09
Speaker 7: that are facing us. EMINE got to be a solution,
50:12
Speaker 7: got to be solved now versus policy issues that I
50:16
Speaker 7: would contend are better left to the legislature because executive
50:20
Speaker 7: orders are overturned by the next guy. Right, So if
50:22
Speaker 7: you want some kind of you know, stance on the
50:26
Speaker 7: issue and you want something binding going forward, I'm not
50:29
Speaker 7: sure And EO is the best way to do it,
50:30
Speaker 7: but we'll get into that. Mike Pushkin joins us at
50:32
Speaker 7: ten thirty three. Of course, he's going to talk about
50:34
Speaker 7: the DeSoto seat and why the Democrats are filing legal action.
50:38
Speaker 7: They say a Democrat should be in that seat the
50:39
Speaker 7: ninety first that was vacated. Of course, Republicans have a
50:42
Speaker 7: different take, so we'll get into that with Mike. I'm
50:44
Speaker 7: sure he'll give us some of his thoughts on the
50:46
Speaker 7: inauguration yesterday as well. Friend of the show Matt Lewis.
50:49
Speaker 7: He's a nationally syndicated columnist out of Washington, d C.
50:53
Speaker 7: He's going to talk with us at eleven oh six
50:55
Speaker 7: about Joe Biden's legacy and why he thinks Trump winning
50:58
Speaker 7: has all but ruined the legacy going forward and not
51:01
Speaker 7: much redemption there for Joe Biden. Eleven thirty three. Amanda
51:04
Speaker 7: Baron of WAWK thirteen News stops by. We'll talk inauguration
51:09
Speaker 7: with her. Eleven forty five. The legal director for the
51:12
Speaker 7: ACLU of West Virginia, Aubrey Sparks, ACLU of WV coming
51:17
Speaker 7: out yesterday and saying they have filed a complaint against
51:20
Speaker 7: the Water Development Authority over that five million dollar grant
51:23
Speaker 7: that went to Saint Joseph, the Worker College in Ohio.
51:27
Speaker 7: We will get into their argument. Understand what they say.
51:30
Speaker 7: The legal merit here is to dismiss that grant and
51:33
Speaker 7: go forward.
51:34
Speaker 3: All right, They'll coming up at ten oh six. Appreciated man,
51:37
