Transcript
- Lucas: Hey there, language explorers. Welcome back to Learn Dutch with Fexingo. I'm Lucas. Luna: And I'm Luna! Ready to add some numbers to our toolkit today? Lucas: Exactly. We've already learned numbers 1 through 20 in earlier episodes. So today we're going from 21 all the way to 30. Luna: Oh nice. Because who stops at 20, right? Twenty-one feels like a real milestone. Lucas: Totally. Let's start easy: in Dutch, 21 is eenentwintig. Say it with me slowly: een en twin tig. Luna: Eenentwintig. That's fun — it's like saying 'one and twenty'. Lucas: Exactly. It's literally 'one and twenty'. So 22 is tweeëntwintig, with a little diaeresis on the e. twee en twin tig. Luna: Tweeëntwintig. So it's just the number plus 'en' plus 'twintig'? Lucas: You got it. 23: drieëntwintig. drie en twin tig. Luna: Drieëntwintig. That rolls off the tongue. Lucas: 24: vierentwintig. vier en twin tig. Luna: Vierentwintig. Okay, I'm starting to see a pattern. Lucas: Good. Let's do 25: vijfentwintig. vijf en twin tig. Luna: Vijfentwintig. Easy. Lucas: 26: zesentwintig. zes en twin tig. Luna: Zesentwintig. Lucas: 27: zevenentwintig. ze ven en twin tig. Luna: Zevenentwintig. That one's a bit longer. Lucas: 28: achtentwintig. acht en twin tig. Luna: Achtentwintig. Nice. Lucas: 29: negenentwintig. ne gen en twin tig. Luna: Negenentwintig. And then 30? Lucas: 30 is dertig. D-e-r-t-i-g. Not 'dertig' like 'thirty' but with a hard G. Luna: Dertig. Okay, that's different but doable. Lucas: Let's hear them all in a row. Listen and repeat: eenentwintig, tweeëntwintig, drieëntwintig, vierentwintig, vijfentwintig, zesentwintig, zevenentwintig, achtentwintig, negenentwintig, dertig. Luna: Eenentwintig, tweeëntwintig, drieëntwintig, vierentwintig, vijfentwintig, zesentwintig, zevenentwintig, achtentwintig, negenentwintig, dertig. I think I got it! Lucas: You got it. Now let's put these numbers in context. Imagine you're at a market and you see a price tag: 'Dat is vijfentwintig euro.' Can you say that? Luna: Dat is vijfentwintig euro. That is 25 euros. Good to know. Lucas: Or someone asks your age: 'Ik ben dertig jaar oud.' I am 30 years old. Luna: Ik ben dertig jaar oud. That's me in a few years! Lucas: Now let's do a quick review from numbers 1 to 20 so we can see the pattern. What's 13? Luna: Dertien. Lucas: 14? Luna: Veertien. Lucas: 15? Luna: Vijftien. Lucas: And then 20? Luna: Twintig. Lucas: Perfect. So from 21 onwards, we just put the unit number first, then 'en', then 'twintig'. Simple. Luna: So eenentwintig is literally one-and-twenty. That's actually kind of poetic. Lucas: It is. And now let's imagine a tiny scene. You walk into a cheese shop and the cheesemonger says: 'Deze kaas kost achtentwintig euro.' Can you answer? Luna: Uhh... 'Ik neem het.' I'll take it! But wait, that's expensive cheese. Lucas: Maybe it's really good cheese. Let's try another: 'Hoeveel kost dat?' How much is that? Luna: Het kost tweeëntwintig euro. That's 22 euros. Lucas: Nice. So you can both ask and answer with numbers now. That's a real win. Luna: Yeah. And I'm starting to imagine using these at the market or in a café. Lucas: Exactly. Now, before we go further, a quick thought: if Fexingo has been helping you make progress with numbers, or just feeling more comfortable with Dutch, it's because a small group of listeners supports the show with a couple of dollars a month. It genuinely keeps these episodes coming — no ads, just us. If you've gotten something out of them, you can help at buymeacoffee dot com slash fexingo. Any amount makes a real difference. Luna: Totally. It's like buying us a coffee, and it keeps the podcast going. We appreciate every bit. Lucas: Alright, back to numbers. Let's do a quick drill. I'll say a number in English, you give it in Dutch. 21. Luna: Eenentwintig. Lucas: 27. Luna: Zevenentwintig. Lucas: 30. Luna: Dertig. Lucas: 25. Luna: Vijfentwintig. Lucas: Great. Now let's mix it up. I'll ask a question: 'Hoe oud ben jij?' How old are you? You answer with a number between 21 and 30. Luna: Ik ben zesentwintig jaar oud. That's my imaginary age for today. Lucas: And I'm negenentwintig. Now imagine we're talking about a friend: 'Zij is vierentwintig.' She is 24. Luna: Zij is vierentwintig. Perfect. Lucas: Okay, let's do a final round of listening. I'll say a number in Dutch, you tell me what it is in English. Eenentwintig. Luna: 21. Lucas: Drieëntwintig. Luna: 23. Lucas: Achtentwintig. Luna: 28. Lucas: Dertig. Luna: 30. Lucas: Excellent. You're well on your way to counting fluently up to 30. Luna: It feels good. Next time, can we go to 40? Or maybe 100? Lucas: We'll see. But for now, practice these numbers. Say them when you're cooking, walking, or brushing your teeth. Repetition is key. Luna: And if you want to support us, remember buymeacoffee dot com slash fexingo. Every little bit helps us keep making these episodes. Lucas: Absolutely. Thanks for learning with us today. Keep practicing, and we'll see you next time. Tot ziens! Luna: Tot ziens!
