- RY4N: I don't really wear hats. RAC Aaron: I need to. My balding head needs it. RAC Chandler: Yeah, why advertise our brand, you know? RAC Aaron: We need good shirts. RY4N: Wait, where were like the golf course or something and then someone's like who you're talking to the president? I was on the phone with the president RAC Chandler: Out of water. Close the episode. RY4N: really thirsty from all the diuretics. RAC Chandler: diabetics. RY4N: Alright, mic is awfully hot. RAC Aaron: Yep, Mike is high. There it is. RY4N: coach. RAC Aaron: Welcome back to run after cast the college football podcast. As usual, I'm Aaron joined by Ryan and Chandler. RY4N: Hey guys. RAC Chandler: with fans. How's it going guys? RAC Aaron: He's got an upgrade. Not quite the resolution as everybody else here in the SEC, but an upgrade with a couple fans. So this week. ⁓ RY4N: Mm-hmm. RAC Chandler: 110,000 pal RAC Aaron: This week for the first time in a while, it's just us three again. And we decided that this week we're going to all get together and argue as to what we think the perfect college football format or the perfect college football playoff format is going to be. But as usual, before we get into the arguments, we got to take a trip over to the Raction News desk. Take it away boys. RAC Chandler: ⁓ are we doing my game? RAC Aaron: ⁓ that's right. This week we have a game. RAC Chandler: Okay, I'll pull it up, I'll pull it up. Yeah, I'll pull it up and we can recut that. Forgot. Hold on. What is Luxury Yacht Ambience 2026? Why is this playing? RY4N: Come on now. RAC Aaron: Lofi Jimmy Buffett tracks to RAC Chandler: This is actually like really, really relaxing. RY4N: Is that real? RAC Aaron: I don't know. I can't imagine what luxury ambient yacht tunes are. RAC Chandler: It's actually pretty relaxing. RAC Aaron: Yeah. RY4N: Send that to my dad, can play it on Dix on Sunday. RAC Aaron: Chill beats to golf too. RY4N: Haha. RAC Chandler: Okay, we can do as long as we want. ⁓ It's 20 minutes long, so we can do as much as you want. RAC Aaron: our show. We can do whatever we want. We can always cut. RAC Chandler: And I'm also gonna mute ⁓ the audio in it because we don't need the audio and I can just talk to it. Because I ain't giving these people credit for this. RY4N: Okay, instead of Raction News, you can do like Raction Game Show. RAC Chandler: The reaction news desk is going to the reaction game show. Okay, I have it pulled up and you can kick it to me and I'll explain it. RAC Aaron: See RY4N: Hello and welcome to the Raction Game Show! I'm the C-Channeler! RAC Chandler: You could say you're the ghost host and we could do the you and the doom buggy like it looks like. Okay, yeah, restart. RAC Aaron: Okay. RAC Chandler: 1914, desk chair. All right, yeah, you're ready. I'm ready. RAC Aaron: But before we get into the arguments, this is where we normally cut over to the reaction news team. But once again, it looks like our news team took the week off and the slot is being filled by the nation's new favorite game show that I was told about. I completely forgot what it is. So Chandler fill me in on what we're watching. RAC Chandler: So I came, we, came up with the idea or I guess I came up with the idea, uh, to kind of fill dead space whenever there's not a lot of news going on. I thought we could start the show with a 10 to 20 minute kind of trivia game show esque thing that we can kind of ebb and flow as we go. But I have a 134 logo quiz of all the 134 teams in division one football. And what we're going to do is we're going to have Ryan and Aaron go head to head and I'm going to keep a running tally and whoever gets more right will host the next game show and they can pick the game for myself and the loser to go head to head against. And we can just kind of have fun with it. can, we can tally our wins the end of the season and the fans can help us figure out what the punishment will be. But I figured if there's no news for the week, this would be something cool to kind of fill it with. And for the audio listeners, I apologize, maybe we can do a good job posting. ⁓ We can timestamp you. It'll probably be about 25 minutes in, so just play around with it. But. RY4N: First of all... RAC Aaron: Yeah, skip to a time code that I'll post in the description. Yeah. RY4N: Yeah, first of all, it's kind of a surprise game show. Chandler wouldn't tell me what it is for two weeks until today. So it'll be interesting. It's good. You got to save the surprise. I can't be practicing. RAC Chandler: Yeah, you know. Okay, so. RAC Aaron: And so you said, you said it's 130. RAC Chandler: It's 134, yeah, so the title is Guess the All 134 Teams by Their Logo. So. RAC Aaron: That's an insane amount. I'm taking college exams that have less. RAC Chandler: So my wife did this. My wife did this and she got probably somewhere between 85 and 100 right? Probably closer to 185. So I was like really impressed and I figured if she can do that well, then it should be a very entertaining battle between you two of who can say it the fastest first. Because some of them obviously. Yeah, so. RY4N: We might just get memory-mogged. Jesus, memory-maxing. I don't... RAC Aaron: I yeah, I'm an old man. My brain isn't as good as it once was. We'll see. I do want people to know I am on record and of Mexican men. do trivia every couple months and it is embarrassingly bad at how bad my memory is at trying to get things out for trivia. So Brian, if I beat you, you should feel shame. RAC Chandler: Okay. RY4N: Dude, I'm probably gonna do terrible. I watch Auburn, and I watch SEC, and I watch Ohio State. RAC Aaron: I think we're probably in the same basket as like SEC teams. All right. RY4N: No ACC. Boston College up there, no ACC. RAC Chandler: Hey, whoa, whoa, we haven't started. RY4N: How much real football? RAC Chandler: Okay, so I figure out how I'm tally this. Okay, let me pull up a note, Padro. This is so improv. Hold on. RY4N: Yeah, so you're just gonna pause it after each one. RAC Chandler: Nope, I'm just gonna actively type as we go and I'm gonna be just amazing at it. Mm-hmm, that was a heart attack. Of course I have two monitors, who do you play me as, a fool? RY4N: Are you serious? You have two monitors? Fool. Not a kazoo. RAC Chandler: Apparently you do and I can't get this this notes thing over so maybe I am a fool. Get over there. RY4N: I hope nobody watching wants to know how to make 75 dollars. RAC Chandler: No more. I don't even know what this is. Agent to agent, sole direction of seller. You don't say. How do I get this over on my other screen? Okay, I'm just gonna... Whoever's note this is doesn't need it. RAC Aaron: $75 Need some pen and paper. So this is, we yell as fast as we can and hope to get them right. and we rely solely on your judgment. RAC Chandler: Yeah, and I guess I'm just gonna be like, ⁓ Aaron won, okay, Aaron won again, okay, Aaron won again, okay, Aaron won again. RY4N: Yes, and- Yeah, chillin' is the ref. Yep, that's how it's gonna go too. Come on! RAC Aaron: No. RAC Chandler: Okay. This is all right. Yeah, whoever's editing this one is going to have a little bit of a cut here. Let me share the other screen now. RY4N: We've had some talk in here. I don't know if we can get anything out of it though. RAC Aaron: Nope, it's cut. RAC Chandler: get some of it. Okay, yeah, it's cut. RAC Aaron: I'm editing. I'll let you know. In the garbage. Now we're in infinite recursion. RY4N: You're cut. RAC Chandler: hurt your brain before the quiz. RAC Aaron: I'm already. RY4N: know his brain is super active right now, that's kind of scaring me. RAC Chandler: Alright guys, I mean I really love MacBooks. If I haven't said that before. ⁓ They're pretty cool. ⁓ RAC Aaron: Hashtag ad. Mac sponsors us all Mac equipment. RAC Chandler: I would quit the podcast. RAC Aaron: Me too. RAC Chandler: Unless they pay a good amount of money. But that's neither here nor there. Okay, I can't see you guys anymore and I'm just doing this. So, alright, this one doesn't count because they both said Boston College. are we ready? RAC Aaron: I'm as ready as I'm gonna get. RY4N: Ready! RAC Chandler: Okay, if anything happens to the share screen, let me know because I can't I literally am full screen on this video and full screen in the notes so I cannot see anything else. Can you still see me? Okay. All right. Three, two, one, go. Whoever I hear first is what I'm saying. RY4N: Massacred. Holy lag. RAC Aaron: It is. Copy, but we'll live. SMU. I'm going give that to Ryan. RY4N: SMU. RAC Chandler: Yeah, well yeah, you're not the judge though, so that's good. RAC Aaron: I know. RY4N: Eastern Michigan. Hawaii. RAC Chandler: No way neither one of you got that. RY4N: ⁓ man. Boo! RAC Aaron: Al viva. RAC Chandler: There is actually no way that each one of you guys got Navy. That's like the Navy logo. ⁓ That's like the actual like Navy logo for the actual Navy, not just the football team. RAC Aaron: I don't watch the armed forces bowl. South Carolina. RY4N: South Carolina. RAC Aaron: Yeah. RY4N: Ummm... Houston. RAC Aaron: ⁓ RAC Chandler: Ryan 15, Aaron 9. RAC Aaron: My brain's like shutting down. RY4N: I was state. RAC Chandler: Mm-hmm. Cut the lead to 10, Aaron. RY4N: Ooh, ⁓ two lane. Not two lane. ⁓ just gonna, yeah. RAC Aaron: Host of Carolina. RAC Chandler: Pass it on there, because you're good reading, RY4N: Louisiana Monroe. RAC Aaron: Hahaha RAC Chandler: you RAC Aaron: PIN RY4N: Penn State. RAC Chandler: Aaron, did you say pin? RAC Aaron: said bitch. RAC Chandler: ⁓ I thought said pen, because you said pen before you said Penn State. RY4N: BlueZaynterTek. RAC Chandler: ⁓ Buddy's scoring before he can even update the score. RY4N: Have a seat. RAC Aaron: FSU. RAC Chandler: Looks like, as of now, like Ryan's gonna be the host of the next game. RY4N: JG Tech. RAC Aaron: We'll you next time. RY4N: Ohio, normal Ohio. Mormon school, central Florida. RY4N: UCF. Give it to Aaron. RAC Chandler: Hey there, it's ECF. RAC Aaron: Yeah, you can give the rest of them to me. We'll change the outcome. Old minion. RY4N: Old Dominion. ⁓ I don't know, koi perich. RAC Aaron: Week two, it's our week two of fun. RY4N: paratron there. Wisconsin. RAC Aaron: Wisconsin. RAC Chandler: Cheese curd. RAC Aaron: you RY4N: VMS. I can read. I think we'll cook one there. RAC Aaron: You missed. RAC Chandler: hehe RY4N: Pit. Pittsburgh. I can read you. Maybe you fixed that. Yeah. RAC Aaron: good at the reading ones. Yeah. RAC Chandler: from Michigan. RY4N: the Red Seas. It's out of touch. Crystal State, I've been waiting for this one. RAC Aaron: You RY4N: I thought this was niche one that would be on there. ECU mr. mr. Beast is gonna go a hundred million dollars for ECU, but again RAC Aaron: East Carolina. RAC Chandler: you RAC Aaron: ⁓ fu fu fu RAC Chandler: Shout out to Devin McHugh and UTSA. RY4N: Tilt, tilt, tilt, some other T. UTSA. RAC Aaron: Kalita? RAC Chandler: Who Devin McEwen came from? RAC Aaron: You mad or Mizzou. RY4N: misery Kinda, University of Mass-er- Mass-ery. ⁓ Baylor, week one. RAC Aaron: Yeah. Messery. RAC Chandler: loss. RAC Aaron: Hahaha ⁓ Utah. RY4N: University of Utah, ⁓ Don't know about it. RAC Chandler: more. RAC Aaron: There's still a chance. RY4N: Nebraska Dylan Reola RAC Aaron: I'll live right and have a couple of chances to catch up. RY4N: F-I-U. I can read Florida International. Notre Dame, most slept on school in the country this year, very niche. More like niche dame. RAC Aaron: Notre Dame. Most improved. RAC Chandler: Huskies? Nope, you gone. RY4N: Nevada Nebraska Yukon way up that yeah basketball girls basketball school Newton? Newton? Basinet Patrick Mahone RAC Chandler: What? Nebraska? We're gonna get an ad on 134, are we serious? RAC Aaron: in. RAC Chandler: ⁓ that was it. Well, shout out to ⁓ American Sports Quiz for that video. The final score. RAC Aaron: All right. Well. RY4N: Thank you. RAC Aaron: It was, was close. We don't have to go. We don't have to talk numbers. We could just say it was close. RAC Chandler: The final score... The final score may or may not have been Aaron 37, Ryan 74. So it looks like, Ryan, next time we don't have news, or it can be next week, you have to come up with our next game for Aaron and I to compete against. RY4N: Sorry. I'm sorry. RAC Aaron: You RY4N: I give you a learning opportunity, there's have to be a game. RAC Chandler: ⁓ Learning? We're gonna learn? We're gonna compete in how well we can learn? RAC Aaron: learning opportunity. RY4N: You can learn and then we can both take a quiz on Google Sheets that I make and we can see who performs better. I don't know who can- RAC Chandler: No! That's terrible content! What in the world? Yeah, we're gonna take the SAT. Aaron and I are gonna compete. RAC Aaron: Enjoy this podcast that is a lecture and then sit in 20 minutes of silence while we take our quiz. RY4N: Go to breakout rooms, yourself. RAC Chandler: Yeah, so if you're watching this and your audio only 30 minutes in was our timestamp RAC Aaron: Is it open book? Yeah. RY4N: Okay, comment below if you would like to see the quizzes, the retention quiz. RAC Chandler: Don't comment that. RAC Aaron: You know, you'll cause this. ⁓ RY4N: Just comment no if you think it's bad. Say bad if you don't like the rootin. RAC Chandler: Tyreke, ⁓ I expected no from you. I know you're watch this and spence all of you guys that are gonna watch this and comment my dad everybody that's comments usually they know RAC Aaron: Yeah. RY4N: Yeah, just comment bad if you don't like the retention quiz. If you have any other ideas, comment those as well, but don't say bad, say good, and then your thing. And we'll control F goods for all of the options. RAC Chandler: Very bad. RAC Aaron: I can pretty much give a guarantee that I'm going to be the ECU of trivia games on this show. I don't know if I'll ever host one, but I'm going to try. I'm going to, I'm going to bring the spirit. RY4N: I apologize for- RAC Aaron: No, you did great. My brain ⁓ is mush and doesn't work good. So, glad. RAC Chandler: That'd be work well, would be the proper grammar there. RAC Aaron: You're correct. So. RY4N: Hey grammar boy, you don't wanna do my retention quiz? Sorry. RAC Aaron: Ryan keeps, well, he doesn't have a streak. Ryan starts the dynasty here of trivia wins. Next time we have it, it'll be me and Chandler subject to some trivia, a game, or potentially if the comments say so, a quiz. With that, hundred questions. Listen, we need. RAC Chandler: 100 plus question only. It has to be more than 100 questions. It needs to take at least 45 minutes. It needs to be at least 45 minutes long of silence. RY4N: Yeah RAC Aaron: A running game clock. For me, it just put me out of my misery. A hundred questions is a lot for me to lose to. So we'll go ahead and move on to our main topic of this episode, which is how we want to see the college for the college. How, how we want to see the college playoff system from this point on. RAC Chandler: All long algebra. College Core Play. RAC Aaron: So if any one of us were given the keys to modify playoffs for next season, how do we want to do it? Ryan, let's start off with you. What's your dream playoff format? RY4N: Okay, ⁓ real life scenario, if I was actually given the keys, like you just said, I'd probably lower it to 10 game. What? What's so funny? RAC Chandler: That is the exact scenario he just described and you just repeated it over like we didn't just all hear that. RAC Aaron: Listen, he's in trivia mode. RY4N: Yeah. RAC Chandler: So hypothetically, we were to give the keys to you, OK, so hypothetically, if I had the keys. RAC Aaron: Yeah. ⁓ RY4N: Yeah, well, I, okay. Um, I would probably make it a 10 team playoff where it's almost as if instead of four teams automatically getting a buy, there's four teams playing for the last two spots in an 18 playoff. You know I'm talking about? But for this circumstances that we already have a 12 team playoff, I'm going to go off of those standards for now that I don't mind 12 teams. actually think 12 teams is a pretty good amount. I kind of like how it's formatted with the four. Bye games, but G five's need to get out. The committee needs to get out. want a current algorithm algorithm based system, similar to the BCS system, but with week to week updated strength of schedule thing. So every week. strength of schedule updates because even the BCS system you weren't ranked for the first few weeks and like week five you had a ranking and it puts you in there because that would take all of the critical times like last year we had a top 10 matchup against LSU and Clemson and they both turned out to almost go losing records what they have I know LSU was five and seven I'm just probably about saying they suck terribly but ⁓ so they're gone ⁓ The things like FSU Alabama, that caused a lot of trouble because Alabama was pretty inflated at beginning of the year and Florida State beat them. They automatically shift them up to 16, think they're really good. They don't lose. They don't play anybody. And then they played Virginia or Virginia Tech. One of those games. They lost. That team got thrown up into 15 and they didn't lose again until later when it was like ACC championship time. So it really just throws a wrinkle in all these things that there's these artificially inflated people in those like 15 ish rankings. And then when someone beats them, they get shifted up. get dropped back when it's the whole time. None of these teams should be ranked Florida state was terrible. They were unranked the whole year. It's like, okay, you're looking at it from week 10. Alabama you beat, you lost to an unranked Florida state with eight losses or whatever. You're not going to make the playoffs, you know? So stuff like that. I know there's a situation where people don't think the G5 schools are getting enough credit. I don't really care. If they're not good enough, they're not getting in. Go play harder competition. People are mad at Ohio State for not playing hard enough competition, even though they have a pretty decent schedule nowadays with the new USC in Oregon in the big 10, but they're still going out and they're playing Texas week two. So you got that. There are scenarios. I really don't like the playoff committee because I'll give you two examples. I'll give you a 2017 example and I'll give you a 2025 example. If you lose the SEC championship, 28 to seven, they automatically just put Alabama in because in 2017 we beat a number one Georgia, talking about Auburn, beat number one Georgia, beat number one Alabama. We were number four. We lose 28 to seven. They put Alabama in. Okay. Makes sense, right? Alabama loses 28 to seven to Georgia? Okay, let's put Alabama in but it's different because they have nine wins So there's weird scenarios there that certain guys are getting in if they lose to Georgia ⁓ I also don't like the situation we're talking about where we're getting rid of Conference games. I love the conference games. I love the SEC championship I know I'm a SEC Satan you probably like the Big Ten championship It kind of threw y'all off a little bit because y'all played Indiana y'all should have won that game though because Jane Fielding Needs to make his field goals and Jeremy Matthew doesn't get torched one time. Any of those happen, you win that game and Julian Sain wins the Heisman. That's a completely different year because you all win the national championship. He wins the Heisman. But yeah, I think algorithm, rhythm based system would be really good. It takes all the bias out. The only issue is those kind of lower tier teams where they could play harder schedules or we could have what the 12 team really was kind of invented to have where the top like eight are like, you're in. Nine and ten are like the nine, ten win SEC teams like the Texas's last year. Stuff like people like that. And then number 11 or 12 is really your undefeated teams like that Liberty year or the year Cincinnati was undefeated a one loss. They get an 11 12. They're going to be in that lower teen ranking either barely make it in barely not. But RAC Aaron: Hahaha. RY4N: Having a situation where it's week to week strength of schedule is really going to matter. Every game is going to matter again. It's you lose one game. That team, you got to hope that team starts winning a bunch of games because they're going to look back and they're like, okay, you lost to an unranked team, but week eight, they actually are really good. They're eight and O and then you're way higher because that didn't matter as much. And then you have people like FSU Alabama last year that you lost to an unranked team. Alabama, you're actually like 21st, you're not making the playoffs. You know? Is that pretty decent? Is there any holes I need to fill? RAC Chandler: No, think strength of schedule definitely needs to be altered. think it's a factor now and it's always been a critical factor in every single playoff committee interview that's taken place since the 2014 ⁓ initialization of the College of Well Playoff era. I think they always talk about it. It's always a focal point. But it's like you said, you have to kind of stagger it throughout the year to be able to get those RAC Aaron: Yeah. RY4N: Mm-hmm. RAC Chandler: current strength of schedule situations because exactly like Ryan said, I don't want to just say exactly what he said because it was good, but like FSU, the win against Alabama. should have counted for more I guess at the end of the year because FSU ended up being so bad by the end of the year that like it almost got discredited because it was week one and FSU was a lot higher ranked than when they finished so it should have hurt them more than it did but I mean if strength is schedule it's never gonna be perfect you have to have some kind of algorithm do it that has no bias in it ⁓ If you have people do it every year, there's gonna be bias no matter who's doing it. could have all the governors of all the states do it. There's gonna be bias somewhere. Like it doesn't matter who does it. RY4N: Mm-hmm. Yes. RAC Aaron: Which I think was the like BCS systems, like as we look back on it, where it's like we have both elements, we have a voting committee, and then we have a statistical and it you know, we kind of take the the two together. And did that have flaws? Sure. ⁓ but Our current one, like last year when we had this, know, Alabama beat someone, so Georgia beat so-and-so. When we're talking conference position and all of this stuff, it was like this chain of, we have to walk down who beat and who lost the whole time through. And after a while, you're like, it's, we're getting into a little bit of nonsense territory because we're now like factoring. Well, this was a while ago, so this doesn't matter. The FSU game doesn't matter. because Alabama's doing well now and it's like, well, that's still part of the same season. And as we get to my discussion a little bit, we kind of keep coming back to regular season. People talk about like we're diluting regular season and we do, want to avoid diluting the regular season, but it's like, we keep kind of adding things in that too. RY4N: Yeah, and I loved the BCS system, but it was so flawed because only two people went in. Auburn specifically has probably got gypped more than anybody. 2004 didn't put us in. 1983, we actually went and beat the team up north that was number one. And they're like, okay, Miami, you win. Nope. We claim those in your face. Uh, but like we win those, get gypped so bad, but every single game matter. You cannot lose a game or you're not making the national championship every single week matter. The Tim Tebow speech. RAC Chandler: Ha! RAC Aaron: You RY4N: would would have happened that I will play harder than every players ever played ever for you. The classic speech, but the BCS system was slightly flawed because of that, but I think in the 12 team playoff scenario, it would be perfect that you kind of have a real ranking system. The strength of schedule would be kind of real cause you're not inflating the people like we talked about. And then you would have Like those teams that didn't quite make it in are going to be like eighth and you have those last couple slots last four slots for the random people that decide not to play anybody Speaking of that. I don't know why the sec people are deciding we need to play nine conference games now Apparently the nca thinks we just need to make it more fair because everyone's too good and they have nine or ten wins even playing nine, ⁓ Because right now it's like we would just Let's lower it to five conference games and just get all of our SEC people and everyone's one loss. Let's just put all the SEC people in the playoffs. So I don't know why they're doing that. Also conference championships used to matter because if you didn't win every single game, you're playing for the conference championship. You don't hear your conference championship. You're playing for the bowl games. So the playoffs kind of ruined bowl games. They don't matter anymore at all. No one plays them anymore. All the people just sit out. So I think it would bring an aspect of that. And you can't get mad at the computer. can kind of get mad, like you can't claim anything. You can't claim bias. You can't actually have any tangible things. You could just be mad your team didn't make it in, but you can't have a reason or an excuse like Notre Dame. I don't know why we're trying to put Notre Dame in Alabama in there every year. It's not fair. I think with the technology that we have in the computers, we could build such a good algorithm. Not the points for I like that they took that out in 2002 because that was pretty bad because people just run up the scores like leaving Fernando Mendoza in the entire game last year. So he wins the Heisman stuff like that. I think it would be a decent system. RAC Aaron: Yeah, definitely needs a comparative system where we need to look at the strength of offense and defense of the teams you're playing and calculate those. that's another thing that we see is you mentioned the SEC, you know, conference game schedule. Everyone should be doing that kind of schedule. We should be facing conference opponents, comparing quality matchups. RY4N: Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. RAC Aaron: to our conference. It shouldn't be something where we can kind of look at teams that get to cherry pick or you just hope that you get that season. Like we can say Oregon season this year. Oregon has a pretty simple season. ⁓ Notre Dame has the same thing. RAC Chandler: To be fair, do schedule these seasons like years in advance with some suggestions, like some exceptions in there, but they can't really like predetermine if these teams are gonna be good or bad. Exactly. RAC Aaron: Yeah. Yeah, they can't say who's going to be good. But if you have that like the SEC system where you're doing a two year draw of like, okay, you've got this, you're drawing every two years, you do a home game and away game. So you have comparison points to go from, but you're still working in a pretty competitive. Yeah. But I think with now, SEC has how many is it? Is it nine games now that RAC Chandler: Yeah, most conferences do that. nine. Yeah. RY4N: It's nine games. And I think it used to be. Yeah. And it used to have the system where it was East and West, which they got rid of and you'd play all your West people. Cause Auburn every year we play Alabama. We played LSU. We played Ole Miss. We played Mississippi state, all these people, all the West guys. And then you had the East, which is super weak and had Florida because they were only good for two years and they Georgia. Then it was always Georgia against Auburn and Alabama, like every single year. And yeah. RAC Aaron: nine that it's in conference. RY4N: or South Carolina the one year 2010. RAC Aaron: Yeah. RAC Chandler: This is Jadavian Clowney here. RAC Aaron: I mean, we're in the college playoff discussion. I'm all for redoing conferences into a relegations based system, but that's for a different con, a different episode for me. But it is something that I think right now we do have. Schedules that are being built that we're seeing kind of year after year. And I'll say big 10, you guys get difficult schedules. Like you don't have as many cake walks as RAC Chandler: That was hard for you to say. RAC Aaron: Big 12. It is, it is hard. ⁓ it is something that it's, yeah, Ohio State definitely has a strong schedule this year, difficult. But yeah, it is something that like, RY4N: Okay, I'll see you all house stay. Look at Oregon. RAC Chandler: Ohio State's schedule was just like Oregon's last year. RAC Aaron: But it is like when you get that like peak and low there, it is, it's difficult. It's difficult to balance that. Are they going to be good or are they just playing teams that just aren't in that place to be competitive with them? You're throwing, you know, thousands of yards that you can do, but you know, you could also have a Heisman quarterback if you never play a power four school. Like. Yeah. RAC Chandler: Yeah. Well, the big since hard because the big the big since hard because you can't always only schedule the top eight teams every single year. Like they're they're very they're very top end heavy. And the middle of road used to be like a couple years back when Mississippi State and Maryland when ⁓ Alia Takaulua was there. RY4N: more. RAC Aaron: Yeah. No, no, no. You guys have a lot of RAC Chandler: I mean, they those kind of teams in the middle road were like those sleeper kind of like you like the Kentucky's or the Mississippi States or whatever you want to say the you know teams that you know are scrappy and can get it done, but now it's so top-end heavy that if you get the short end of the stick and you made these schedules years in advance and you have the Northwesterns and the Rutgers and the Purdue's and stuff that struggled win conference games then You're not going to be battle-testing. I think Ohio State struggled with that last year in Oregon. It obviously has that this year RAC Aaron: Yeah. RAC Chandler: Because now it's kind of roles reversed. Ohio State has the Texas, they have the USC, they have the Oregon, the Indiana, all those games. Michigan. So. It can't be perfect every year, but like the SEC is always going to have the hardest top to bottom schedule because the talent bleeds through the whole conference a lot better than the other conferences do. And that's, don't think that's ever going to be discussion. Now top into top in, you know, it's separate discussion. RAC Aaron: No. ⁓ absolutely. Absolutely. I mean, but if we talk about blue chip programs as a whole, wherever you stick them, they're going to be on top of their conference. And that, that's just the way college football is. That's why, like I said, one day we're going have a discussion about a relegation system, but it is something that right now it does make it tough. So Chandler, what's your format then? RAC Chandler: Mm-hmm. RAC Aaron: How do you solve some of these issues? RAC Chandler: So I'm going to be honest, we came up with this idea and I didn't really think about it. I was too worried about what Aaron's was and that kind of threw me and I didn't really think about what I would want it. So I've been thinking about it this whole time and to be honest, I like 12 teams. I've always said to both of you guys and to everybody I talked to about college football. RAC Aaron: Yeah. RAC Chandler: We can't keep adding all of these teams in and make it like a March Madness kind of thing because it's not basketball. There's no way a Purdue, if they're ranked 25th, they're never going to beat a number one Ohio State or whatever. there's so many teams in the bottom that if you have a 24, 25 team playoff, it... basketball you're not gonna have some Cinderella story where they're gonna march through four games and they're gonna win or at that point it would be like five or six games so I think 12 teams is good but I think the g5 slot the other e5 position ⁓ if those were taken away and two actual good teams were put in those two slots then like if if Penn State was playing who they play the first year that was Not PIT, man, not PIT. Yeah, if SMU, mean, if that was a better team, maybe they'd now granted that, you know, quarterback through like 105 interceptions that game. So, but maybe that could be a testament to it. Exactly. So Boise State and then last year, Tulane, I mean, if those teams aren't in there and they like Oregon has to play a real competitive team, not only your views up and your money and your publicity and all that kind of stuff up, but. RY4N: Sucky you. And Boise State. They also played Boise State. Yeah. Cakewalk. RAC Chandler: The fans have a better experience because it's not like a game where you're blowing out in the playoffs like a 20 plus point win. So I think exactly. I think like that's like an out of conference game that they're playing essentially. And it's not fun to watch as a viewer. Like those tickets are like $12. Like they couldn't like they couldn't give those things away. So I think if you have some kind of scale where if you RY4N: It's not entertaining. At all. that I'll, ⁓ sorry. RAC Chandler: still have the conference championships because I like those. Those have always been good. They're always fun to watch. It's always the staple of the end of year pivoting to the postseason play. So I like that as a whole. If we can keep that relevant and keep that important, I appreciate that. ⁓ And I think a lot of fans do. But I think if we take a straight seed at the end of the year, the top 12, right? You freeze it there. And then you take your conference championships and you go through. those teams, if Allium and Georgia played and they're both top 12, both of those teams are safe. Now you're playing for a seeding spot, where you can, the winner can still have that first round buy, but it's not a buy of like four weeks, it's a buy of one weekend. And that's fine. ⁓ And then that's something still to play for. You still get your conference title, you still get that buy week. ⁓ And I think the second round games you should host. They should still be a Non-neutral site game that should still be a home game like if Georgia won that game They were second round team. They should have a home game that they're hosting for that second round I think the neutral site games should start in the semi-finals and then obviously the national championship So I think if you just if you straight seed it out the gate from the end you freeze it there and Then you have your conference championships. However, those shake out. There's your buys ⁓ and then you just fill it in the rest of the way that way you don't have a unranked RAC Aaron: Yeah, I agree. RAC Chandler: ACC person that won the conference title getting a bid that doesn't need to be in there. ⁓ So I don't know how that would shake out, but I just have always thought that the group of five bids and all that, that's just, it's nonsense. So it's not, again, it's not basketball. RY4N: No, it's wonderful. Yeah. RAC Aaron: I agree that with the group of five bids, they shouldn't be locked in play. I think those last two shots should be wild card. And the committee makes the decision on the two teams. do think in this 12 format have a competitive chance to go through. Teams can make their case and go through it. RY4N: say who these two teams will be right now and it's Notre Dame and Alabama. They will put them in every single time. So I can say no. RAC Chandler: But guess what? They're more fun to watch than Tulane and SMU and all these other teams that shouldn't be in the playoffs. RAC Aaron: Yep. RY4N: They are more fun. Yeah. But that's another thing that you were saying in my situation too. I would also just remove the conference championship winners. You don't automatically get in because you won the ACC and you're all unranked. You don't get in at all. But I like, I like your ⁓ thing when you're talking about leaving them, but allowing the rankings to switch, but they're automatically in. That's really good. But yeah, I also grew up watching. RAC Chandler: Correct. RY4N: Conference championships, I still think they matter. love them. I want to watch them. I don't think they should get rid of them. RAC Chandler: Mm-hmm. Now... RAC Aaron: No, I completely agree. SEC fans especially, we love our conference championships. It's part of our identity. RAC Chandler: Now if you have a situation where... RY4N: Mm-hmm. RAC Chandler: an unranked Clemson wins the ACC. RAC Aaron: Yeah, beats a number two ranked Miami. Let's just throw that scenario out there. RAC Chandler: Yeah, so then like then things can get hairy and there's that's where the the viewer is gonna throw some flaws in my plan and you know every every plan is is gonna be wrong with a person creating it. So RAC Aaron: Yeah, well, we're not also experts. We're also not paid analysts on this where we're looking at every angle. RAC Chandler: Exactly. So I don't know. mean, upsets happen, but would that Clemson team deserve to be in? Who knows? Probably not. In my system? No. RY4N: You're being too nice though. You're being too nice though. If the Browns, the, the Owen 15 Browns beat Lamar Jackson and his Baltimore Ravens, they're not just going to put the Browns in the playoffs. You know what saying? That's not you being unreasonable. I can tell. It's not. RAC Aaron: It's an, it's an argument point. Yeah. RAC Chandler: ⁓ That's a different situation though. That's not a conference championship game. That's not a post-season game. RY4N: If you're out, well, I'm saying for putting them in the playoffs, like sure. Leave the conference championships so that they can win their conference championship. But that doesn't mean they should get in just like we're talking about the G5 doesn't mean we should get in. isn't like a DEI, like everyone gets in. This is like you played every game and tried your hardest to get in. And these guys didn't care the whole time. They played one game and they get in, you know, that's like not. RAC Chandler: Yeah, no no, I get it. Yeah, but then like you have the argument like I agree with what you're saying and I don't think those teams should get in but then I'm just playing devil's advocate to my plan because I know there's there's flaws to every plan and I think to the other hard thing would be hey that Clemson team beats an unranked Miami team Miami still gets to be in regardless because they finished top 12 so then RY4N: reasonable. You should put up 12 though. RAC Chandler: Why even play the game if you're already in? So there's arguments to both sides. If you're already in and you're playing on ranked team, why potentially embarrass yourself and risk injury when you're playing against nobody? So I don't know. There's flaws to everything. as I'm saying it, there's gray areas. RY4N: Well, I was just saying, don't, I was just saying it doesn't seem that I feel like you're saying I understand you're playing double dead. Okay. But was saying, I don't actually think it's even that bad. I think you're actually on the right track here. I was agreeing. RAC Aaron: I mean. RAC Chandler: Yeah, don't know. We'll see. I definitely just don't think that like these. And I keep saying Tulane because of recency and SMU because of recency and all these. don't know who's the other. RAC Aaron: JMU RY4N: Boise State. RAC Chandler: JMU. Boise State. So those are obviously recency biased in my head, but I mean, those teams, like, JMU is not going to run the table. RY4N: Alabama. RAC Aaron: Yeah. TCU, Coastal Carolina, all those. I would say TCU was a RAC Chandler: Yeah, they're not gonna run the table. They had their shot when the four team came through. RY4N: That was terrible. They shouldn't probably know that. RAC Chandler: with Max Dorgan get shell shocked by Georgia. So I don't know. The more games we add, the more non P four teams we add. It's just going to turn into just a basketball situation to where we just think any team can be any team. And like there's levels like a G five school, like UTEP is not ever going to go and be Georgia in a playoff game. It's not going to happen. RY4N: and Quinston Johnston. No, if anything you have one you really only have one game they could possibly give everything they have and Maybe win one game. There's probably 2 % chance of that happening. That's not gonna happen at the end of the day the Better team is gonna walk on that field and it doesn't matter how bad they play They're just so much better than the other team. They're gonna whether you RAC Chandler: Yeah. So I think there needs to be more of the story to tie a bow and what my thought was is somehow some way there needs to be a system to where the best 12 teams at the end of the year are in the playoffs. RY4N: Let's build an algorithm. RAC Chandler: And that's very easy to say, but that's the way it should be. And it should be as simple as that. however we get to that conclusion, we get to that conclusion, nobody's exactly. But nobody's going to argue that Tulane or JMU is the top 12 team in the country. RAC Aaron: Yeah, it may take a lot of work to get that simple solution in place, but. RY4N: I think people are scared. If you are not the top team in your conference year in year out, they're going to be scared. Well, my team could maybe make it in or the G5s are like, we kind of get a little bit of like extra looks, a little bit extra money if we get in here and they're not going to be happy because they're not making it in. But you got to challenge yourself. You actually got to be a better team. You actually got to play a little bit of competition. But it's one of those things if you don't play any competition, you still go undefeated somehow, you can probably still make it in. RAC Chandler: Well, my other idea that I bounced around in my head, but it's a little more flawed, well, a lot more flawed, is it should only be P4 teams and just take the top four from every conference at the end of the year and just throw them in a 12-team bracket and just let them play. RY4N: You know, I thought of that earlier as a joke and I almost said it. Talked for it from every conference. But yeah. Give the conference champion a bye. RAC Chandler: Yeah, just let him play. Yeah, so I don't know. RY4N: I don't know what you do with the power because then the power five the g5s They're not happy. Let them play a little round robin tournament themselves since they're so worried about RAC Chandler: Who cares? They can play like an NIT tournament like Auburn did for basketball. RAC Aaron: Thanks for listening. RY4N: Yeah, and since they want to play so many games, go let them play their eight team playoff and then the winner of that gets in. RAC Chandler: Maybe the G5 teams to have a bid have to play at least like two out of conference, like E4 teams that have playoff potential or something to be able to be like classified as like we have some kind of resume. We have some kind of strength of schedule to like base our ground on and not just like we beat U-TEP and Boise State and Montana Southern and all these other people. I don't know. RY4N: before. Yeah. Yeah, but then you're talking about these ⁓ the schedules are years in advance. Yeah, if you just had two or three, you have to play a P4. Even if it's like crappy ACC schools, whatever. At least they played sort of a decent team. RAC Chandler: Yeah, give them like the Rutgers, you know, somebody give them a little warm welcome. RY4N: Yeah, like that's fine. Like you can tell, you know, like if they're winning every game and they're like, ⁓ you played Rutgers, you won by three points. Like, okay, you're just not that good. And the algorithm will know that. And it'll put them in their place. RAC Chandler: So Aaron, close us out here ⁓ for warning viewers. Heel and I know what he's about to say and it's going to be a good one. RAC Aaron: So I believe we need a little bit more radical changes in our playoff structure. I'm a 24 team playoff person. Now you can pause the comments you're writing right now. No, I understand this is an unpopular opinion and I'm going to explain myself here, but I do truly believe this. I think four teams. RAC Chandler: Well that's all we have for RAC today, we're gonna close it here. No, let's hear it. I can't wait. RAC Aaron: was a good number. I could see people that don't that argue expansion wasn't necessary. I can see that world where it was, hey, this is the top four teams in the country go against each other. You have two extra games, they win. Whoever it is. Congratulations. We now have expanded to 12. We have a system where we're still kind of have this mentality that it's a 14 playoff that has more people in it. It isn't the same anymore. We also have changed the landscape of college football with NIL. Now every team out here thinks it's their year, that they're going to buy a stacked roster and that's going to take them all the way. And whether or not that's true, I mean, we did see Indiana go all the way. That doesn't, that's no, you know, nothing against Cignetti and the team and the talent that they put together. But we're seeing shifts in these things. 24 teams adds an extra game to the schedule. That is, is more. But when we say something like that, our first gut reactions are gonna be, we're diluting the regular season. The regular season is what matters. And it does. But we also have two games every season, at least that don't matter. We have our season opener against most of the time, know, St. Mary's School for the Blind. And, you know, or a local middle school. And we count that like that counts towards your season. And it's like, that doesn't, that doesn't matter that game. Nobody tunes into it. The fans, the word is show up for it. And depending on your team, but why does that count for our season stats? That's just padding numbers that safety blankets. So I think those games need to go. And I get it homecoming tradition, all of that. I think those, if we are paying coaches and players this amount of money, they all need to matter. I think you drop one of those games, you add an extra buy weekend if we're adding into the, into the season. And I think the other one needs to go to a guaranteed out of conference slot. You need to be tested. ⁓ we ran comparison point. We as conference. Followers of power conferences. We like to say which conference is better than the other part of who we are We root for different teams, but there's teams we never play because we just don't have a matchup to them I think the 2014 playoff gives an option to play more teams that you don't normally play We talk about bowl games Bowl games in the 14 format gave you something there was a lot more to play But let's be honest. Nobody's played in a bowl game and cared about it In years, I mean, half the time your seniors don't show up and why should they? They've got draft stock to consider things like that. I think you take those bowl games, you put them in the 2014 playoff. The championship. I think that's something that when you have the conference championships, those teams, the power for those are your bi-weeks. Whoever wins the conference championship gets That's a hard game. That's an extra game off the season. The winner gets in the buy slot. We have four conferences in the power four. You have four buy slots for the conference or for the, for the week or for the championship series. So RAC Chandler: Okay. Okay. So I'm going to start my sentence with, I wholeheartedly disagree. Um, so here's what the, here's, we're going to read you the 24 best teams last year that finished out. And this would be your bracket that you just agreed on from last year. Okay. So out of these teams that I'm about to read you that we're finishing in the top 24, tell me who out of those would win against Indiana or Miami. RAC Aaron: Yeah. I know you do. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. RAC Chandler: last year. RY4N: Wait, wait, wait. And Mississippi State. RAC Aaron: We wouldn't have won anything. I think we got votes once. RAC Chandler: Okay. Okay. So, okay. Just, just a yes or no after every team, if they're going to beat Indiana or Miami, any remote possibility. Okay. We're going to kick things off with BYU. They were number 11, so it only gets worse. How about Utah? RY4N: I Mississippi State wins. I Mississippi State wins. RAC Aaron: Yeah. Yeah. No? No, on Utah. RAC Chandler: ⁓ Okay, how about Vanderbilt? Okay. How about Iowa? Tulane? James Madison? Houston? RAC Aaron: No. No. RAC Chandler: Navy. North Texas. TCU. Okay. So why would they be in the playoffs? RAC Aaron: Mm-mm. But I also think when we're talking about a year of rankings last year, those teams, we had an inflated ranking. And I think part of it is the ranking system itself. We do put teams that just put big numbers up and we say, Hey, what's their strength of schedule? Here's there. Do I think some of the teams that put up great seasons outside of that would have had a chance? Sure. You know, that there are. Chances that some of those teams that normally would see in the top 24. I think that also makes being ranked important. I think that is something that it's like some teams, some programs, that's what they get. And that does give them a chance to see if they've got it or did they have a bad injury that's dropped them down the list a little bit. RAC Chandler: I just think 24 teams is like a charity case for a playoff system. It's like, if none of those teams that you just said could have beat the two teams in the national championship, if the whole purpose of a postseason playoff is those teams to be competitive enough to compete for a national championship, that's the whole purpose of a postseason playoff is to win a national championship. None of those teams in their facilities think they can win a national championship in that that in that playoff. RAC Aaron: Yeah, no. And I agree. And I think when we talk like group of six, group of five teams, that's a different conversation. I mean, most of those schools that you had named in there are, you know, we had very high ranked group of five, group of six teams. ⁓ we had what? Five of them. RAC Chandler: Okay, so a year before... RY4N: Can I? Can I? RAC Aaron: Yeah, go f- RAC Chandler: Who's going? near you, Ryan. RAC Aaron: ⁓ yeah. RY4N: Just go. RAC Chandler: A year, sorry, real quick, year before. What does it look like a year before? In that same top 24, have SMU, BYU, Clemson, Iowa State, Illinois, South Carolina, Syracuse, Army, Missouri, UNLV, Memphis, and Colorado. So out of that, you maybe have like a Missouri, South Carolina, Illinois. Those would be your teams that dropped out. RAC Aaron: Mm-hmm. RAC Chandler: that are middle of the road that could maybe win one or two games, but again, they're not playoff caliber teams that are gonna make a deep run and compete for national championship. And if the whole purpose of a playoff is to have teams to compete for national championship and for them to be the best teams post-season to be able to earn that spot to do that, then we can't be handing out green stars for participation for these teams to just make the top 24. RAC Aaron: Yeah. And I can see that, but at the same time we have, basically we are giving those out to teams where it's like, do have the Notre Dame, Alabama clauses where it's like, well, do they, and then they don't, but it's like, well, they might go through, but they get over somebody else. So it's like, if we still have those by it, and I get you absolutely, know, Illinois wasn't going all the way for it, but it is still something that RAC Chandler: Yeah. RAC Aaron: If you have those teams, you're now adding in more work. You're adding in more depth to the game at that level because you have more lineups that you can go against. You're not just playing the same teams over and over again. We are paying players and coaches at the level like they are NFL caliber talent. You're now adding that layer of we have another game in the season. So now. You need to know when to pull players. need to be able to not go all the way all the time. And some of those teams need that. Some of those teams might have that game in them that they go for it. But it is still saying that we're adding a complexity to it. But if we've removed all that secondary accolade value, like bowl games, the only one any of us cares about is the Pop-Tart Bowl. At this point, none of the other ones matter. RAC Chandler: Yeah. RAC Aaron: So nobody shows up. mean, Notre Dame just straight up was like, now we're good. We just don't do that anymore. And it's like, no penalty, no nothing to it. We've, we have removed that part and not every team is a blue chip team. And I will say that part of that is a participation style. So if there's nothing secondary for it, we're just going to see teams start falling off the investment portfolio. And then your blue chip teams are still going to spend. Couple teams are going to do big spend, but if there's no. Accolade to get if you're not going to be if you're a middle of the road team, there's nothing to earn for the season. You're not competing for anything. RAC Chandler: Well, get better. RY4N: Here you hear me out here out There's nothing to gain for them to get in the playoffs though and get demolished either ⁓ I will touch on your Notre Dame Yeah, I will touch on your Notre Dame. I do think That they should have to join a conference for not playing their bowl game last year at least Auburn It's like we played the NIT tournament basketball even though we didn't make it They should at least played if they were really that good show us how good you are go out there and demolish some random team, okay? RAC Aaron: Yeah. ⁓ no, I agree. RAC Chandler: Unless they're playing themselves. RY4N: Go play Texas. ⁓ realistically, 12 teams probably is too much. Four or eight is kind of the right amount. When you're really in that conversation with four teams, there's a lot of times even like we're talking about the cakewalks with Oregon this year, that they're either just, they might make it in a four spot. That it's like, there are teams that have a really good chance that maybe had one bad game in their season that actually are like one of the best teams in the country. RAC Aaron: Absolutely. RY4N: They happen to play one of the other best team in the country and they just don't make it in. So realistically eight teams, probably the magic number. Number 12, the 12 teams is good because you are getting a little bit of that inclusion in those teams that wouldn't have quite made it. The undefeated G5s, all those schools, the one loss SECs, the people that lost two games but are super competitive. It's like, you're still getting that inclusion that they're not going to win it. You're playing this, who's going to win the national championship? Do you think this team can win? Do you think this can win? Not a G5, not most P4s, probably the top two or three in the entire conference, especially big 10, SEC, ACC, maybe one, you know, that is kind of the upper end. 12 is... You're starting to get into the inclusion territory. You're including three extra teams to just give them a chance. I think 24... RAC Aaron: Yeah. No. And in that case, I agree with you. The four to eight team format to me, that adds that value of, hey, you were the select best of the best going for a championship. When we got to 12 Chandler, I completely agree with you that we are picking teams that aren't going. We are giving out participation trophies here for the champion. You're getting an honor to just be part of the playoff process. And to me, if that's the RAC Chandler: And. RY4N: Mm-hmm. RAC Aaron: If that's the mentality we're in, expand it to 24 and just hand out a few more trophies at the end of the season. But if we want to lead of the elite, we need to keep it eight or less. RAC Chandler: I just... Yeah, they need to find the line. RY4N: ⁓ so you're really saying, so you're really saying it shouldn't be 12 teams and I'm going to give it to you like a sarcastic 24. RAC Aaron: Yeah. If, if we expand, yeah, no, I'm just saying 12. we, if we're doing 12, it might as well be 24 because at that point we. Yeah. RY4N: See now I'm not as mad at you. I thought you were being serious because you're really an eight or four guy I like that more It's got we're literally putting them in because we feel bad. That is why we're putting all these teams in because we feel bad We got a soft feeling bad. The only reason 12 doesn't seem competitive is because we have g5s in the ACC conference winner So we just need to get them out put the competitive teams in there put Texas and Notre Dame in It's a lot more competitive. It changes everything RAC Aaron: No, I because. RAC Chandler: No. RAC Aaron: You RY4N: If one of them is beating Miami, get Texas A ⁓ out. RAC Chandler: It's RAC Aaron: Yeah. Now, if we change that, if we change that structure to it, to where only the top of the top teams are participating, but if we have a structure where you just get to go hang out, then allow more teams to just go hang out like that. It's, and that's kind of where I'm formulating is what are we currently sitting at? Either we regress back to a smaller form. We either redo ranking systems to make sure that the Highest probability of winners goes in, but I just don't know if there's 12 winners every year. Like I think. Well, it's tough. So I think if we're at that number, then we've got some pity going in there. And if we're doing that, make it ranked, allow bowl games to be part of that process. So we can at least care about bowl games again, have people show up to play them, get some more stats, get some players, some time on screen. RAC Chandler: Mm-hmm, it's not RAC Aaron: because right now the way it is, is if you are eight and four as a team, there is no point in participating in one. RAC Chandler: No, I think you just have to find that line of where is your line of who can actually win a national championship? Where in that top 25 does that stop to where like you're like, okay, this team could, but this team could not. And I mean, I would be curious if you averaged over the past, long it's been 11 years now since the playoffs started 2014, my math, right? This will be the 12th season. ⁓ RAC Aaron: Absolutely. RAC Chandler: If you averaged the winners of the national championship in the playoff era, how many of those teams were in the top 10 the whole year? And if you take the average of where those teams sat for the majority of the year, that could probably be your artificial line of like where it is. Like if the average of that is like seven, like RAC Aaron: Yeah. And even if we, even if we went with the BCS five weeks in system of like from week five to the end, where did they sit? Because you know, some teams might be a surprise and it might take you three games to say like, well, it wasn't a fluke. They're great. Like even if we did that, but that to me is the biggest problem with it is we are still pretending like this is the top four teams in the country, but we've expanded it to 12, but we haven't adjusted that selection process. We came up with a lot of weird placement. RY4N: Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. RAC Chandler: Yeah. Yeah. RAC Aaron: That makes the comp or makes the playoffs just longer, but less like when we all went in last year, it was like Ohio state, Miami, Indiana. Like those, those were the three contenders. RAC Chandler: No, I will say Notre Dame recency bias being. I think they are a upward trending program. I do think, I do think it's bad. I do think it's. RAC Aaron: ⁓ absolutely. I, we've talked about it many times. Ryan thinks they're going to be the most improved team of the season. RAC Chandler: I do think it's bad that they are not in a conference. think they should 100 % join a conference and they're in the ACC and a lot of the other sports they play at Notre Dame. So they should join a conference football. RAC Aaron: No. RY4N: Mm-hmm. RAC Aaron: It, it's weird that they don't. And it's weird that college football has not put the pressure on them to do that. It's like, yeah, but it. RY4N: Did run the ACC. RAC Chandler: At end of day, it's capital currency. They're getting a ton of money for being independent. RAC Aaron: And there's a point where it's like, you can say as conference holders, if the P four got together and said, well, Notre Dame until you make a decision, we're not scheduling you. And you know, there's some of that weight, go for it. RY4N: Okay, here's the thing, here's the thing. I have one. You're not in a conference. You're not in the playoffs. Give them that stipulation. We have clauses. Give a Notre Dame clause. You're not in a conference. You don't make the playoffs. You could be an FCS school. They could play FCS schools every week. They don't care. They can play whoever they want. RAC Aaron: I agree. I agree with that too. Yeah. RAC Chandler: But what I going to say is at least for Notre Dame's case, they are an upward trending program, regardless of their outside noise and publicity. I think, yes, they, I mean, they play at a very high level. were in a national championship two years ago. I do think that they deserve to still have the ability to play in that top 10, top 12 slot. RAC Aaron: ⁓ yeah, yeah, yeah. They do play at that level. RAC Chandler: But they need to schedule the games like we've said to be able to get up there in that spot and they have been recently to an extent. RY4N: Yeah, I was going to say, I think they're doing better. You look at them five years ago, it's like, okay, you're playing nobody. And I think that they saw that people were actually getting mad and this was going to be an issue for the playoffs coming up. And so they actually started scheduling harder games. They played y'all on the regular season one year. RAC Chandler: Mm-hmm. What's funny is they play a lot of they play a lot of ACC teams already. Like they play almost an ACC schedule. So why not just join it? RY4N: Yeah. But yeah, I know RAC Aaron: Yeah. And I get like they, I'm not saying that if they go to the ACC and there's not concessions to be made for them by the SEC financially, like in terms of like ⁓ broadcast rights, things like that, that's all backroom stuff that I don't know how that functions. So, but I still think it's something that in this era in the money we're talking investment wise and the ability to get there, it does feel like favoritism. to have a top 12 guaranteed slot for them for them not making any concession on the other end. And I, because we don't want to just sit here and bash him. Like I've said many times, I like Marcus Freeman. think the program he's going is developing very, very well. But there's always going to be the asterisk for a lot of football fans because they've kind of kept to themselves and like to have it their own way. So. RAC Chandler: Mm-hmm. RAC Aaron: It's, it is tough, but like, you know, Mississippi state can't go anywhere and say like, know, we're kind of an SEC team, but at the end of the day, we're not, we do our own thing. And if we want to schedule, you know, Big 12 games, we're going to do that. And we're going to have it this way. And then if we show up somewhere, we'd never make the top 12, but if we did, we should have a guaranteed role into the playoff and have anybody listen to us. They wouldn't. They just hang up the phone when they saw it was Mississippi state calling. So it's, it's tough. And that's it is where I think when I say 2014 playoff and things like that, when we're talking about this correction, it's because we're working in a flawed system right now. It's obviously flawed. We have issues with NIL. We have issues with coach pay getting out of control. Those things will keep going to what team wants to buy it bad. And we've had an element of that the whole time. But if we keep going in that direction, then we need to make it harder because we're paying. have to, you can't just buy the best D1 or you can't buy the best starters in the country. You have to have depth. You have to have some of that going for it. And if we're going to pay at that level, we need to play at that level. But as you're saying, if we don't want it to be that system, we need to go back to having it just be the best of the best. Cause I can see the argument for four was too few. There were too many teams that were at the cusp that were right there that should have been there and couldn't didn't have the opportunity. They kind of felt snubbed. But at the same time, if we stay in this realm where it's like, well, JMU gets to go have that. JMU has a playoff game under their belt. There's a lot of schools that have long programs that don't have that. that have had much more successful seasons. RY4N: Yeah, and like your Notre Dame thing. I mean, I think they're really good this year, but I've told you, I hate Notre Dame. So it's one of those things. It's not fair for them because they almost have an extra stipulation. That's like, let's just give Alabama a clause. That's okay. We'll lock you in. If you're top 12 before the SEC championship, we'll lock you in 12. That's exactly what they're doing because the SEC championship matters every year, except this last year in that game. It has mattered every single year. If you lose, you're out. If you're on the cusp. But Notre Dame, not only do they not have to have a playoff game, but even if they had a conference championship, but even if they were in a conference championship, they're already in still. It's like Chandler's thinking he was talking about lock the 12. They don't like they're locked in the week before that. RAC Aaron: Yeah. RAC Chandler: No, though The only reason that clause was made was because they don't have a commerce championship. If they had one, it wouldn't be a thing. But like the RY4N: I know. I know, but you know what saying? I'm saying it's the same. Like, they can't not play. RAC Chandler: It's not like, yeah, but if like, it's not the same as if Alabama had one just because like, cause you're an Auburn fan. Like if that's like, it's because they don't, it's because they don't have a conference championship game to go in and have extra criteria built on their resume. RY4N: Okay, say Alabama's 12. RAC Aaron: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, they, yeah, for, for the committee to evaluate. But it also means they get a guaranteed by week for it. If they're at that point, like they don't have to compete at that level. RY4N: No, no, no, no, no, hear me out, me out. Alabama. Okay, last year, hear me out, me out. Last year, Alabama's 11, Notre Dame's 12, Texas is 13. Let's just say something like that, similar scenario. Notre Dame, with this clause, automatically staying 12, or better. We go to the SEC Championship. Alabama's not a bunch of cheaters and rich people, and they lose that game, they're out, they put Texas in, Notre Dame stays. That's not fair. they need to play a conference game. Yeah, they would. RAC Chandler: They wouldn't be though. They wouldn't be. Alabama lost this year and they stayed in. The conference title is not a... RY4N: That's what saying. If they weren't a bunch of lying and cheaters, if they're not a bunch of liars and cheaters in any other team that's not Alabama, they're out. If that's Florida, if that's Florida, no, if that's Florida, they're kicked out. If that's Auburn, they're kicked out. Yes. It happened to us in 2017. We lost the same to the same team in the same score and we got kicked out. Any other team. I don't care. It's the last spot. RAC Chandler: The conference title is never gonna count against them. I disagree. different playoff. It's a different route. It's not a committee. it's not a... No, that was BCS, right? RAC Aaron: Yeah, but that was, that was also the, that was also the four team and not the 12 where 12 gets you a little more room. RY4N: It was a committee. No, no, that was a committee. Fourteen Playoff Committee. RAC Chandler: Well, it wasn't, it wasn't the, oh yeah, 2014 is when the 14 started, yeah. But it's a different, it's a different situation. RY4N: I'm not just saying cause of Auburn. I'm not just saying it cause I don't like Alabama. Any other teams that's this situation, Florida, Mississippi state, anyone's that situation. Notre Dame's locked at 12 and it's like, okay, they're automatically and no matter what I have to play one more game. I'm risking my spot by playing this game. Like why don't they just opt out and not even play? Why do they even go to the game? RAC Aaron: Yeah, no. And that's, that's the part I can see is that Notre Dame, if they are at that ranking, they don't have that high level game. Cause no matter what your conference title, title is going to be or your, your, your conference championship, that's going to be a tough game because you're at the top two teams in your conference. So when you are somebody like an Alabama or a Georgia who are probably going to play each other in this conference game. You have to bring everything you're risking injury. You're risking a lot of these things. Notre Dame does not have that issue. Like that game does not exist for them. They just have a week off and they don't have to prove it. And it isn't fair to them the other way that other teams can make a case when they don't have the opportunity to, but it's more in their favor. If they have the, the talent and everything there already, if they're not making a case for themselves, RY4N: Mm-hmm. RAC Aaron: Then they get to just sit and rehab while building up for the championship. RAC Chandler: I just think that the moment conference championships drop a team out of the top 12 that was already in the top 12 before they went in it, they're done. They're not gonna be a thing anymore. RAC Aaron: No, no, I honestly, I a hundred percent agree. Conference championship should be the second most important game to your team season next to the college championship. RAC Chandler: Yeah, so in Ryan's situation, if Alabama did get kicked out, there would not be an SEC Championship ever again. That would be the last SEC Championship that ever was played. RAC Aaron: I completely, I completely agree. And that's where I agree with you. If you are in that top 12, you playing in a conference game, you're locked in and you're playing for the C either are gambling your seed side. Yeah. Yep. RAC Chandler: that's considered postseason. Your season's over. Now you're postseason. RY4N: Yeah, lock them in. Lock them in. I'm fine with that. I'm fine with Alabama being in if they lock them in- if they're in there and they lock them in. But you can't- RAC Aaron: Yep. Yeah, I am too, because RAC Chandler: But if they were at 11 and they played an SEC championship game and they lost, in no world in this current college football landscape would they get dropped out. I don't care who's in that spot. It could be Mississippi State in there at number 11. They wouldn't get kicked out. No, they wouldn't be. That's not, no. That's Auburn, that's an Auburn biased opinion. And you know it deep down in your heart. That's not true. RY4N: Yeah, they would never get Alabama out. I know, they would never kick him out. RAC Aaron: Yeah. No, no, but I would, we could say, we could say it's Mississippi state is at number 11. RY4N: They're gone. Yeah, they're They're so gone. No, they're so good RAC Aaron: No, I agree with Chandler here. think. Yeah. No, I, I think if we were 11. ⁓ RY4N: It's not an arm-boy. You know I'm the most unbiased person you know. No, no, You know, you know I'm the most unbiased person. It's one of those things. No, no, no. It's everybody or nobody. You have to put... RAC Chandler: I- You're only using Alabama as an argument. That's why you're... I understand. RY4N: Cause they were last year, recency bias. Recency, I literally told you Mississippi State. Anybody, you can't lock in Notre Dame and not lock in Alabama. I know you said it's never going to happen. The only reason they kept them in is because people like Kurt Herbstring were saying that I don't care who it is. I'm putting the best 12 teams in there. They're going to beat all these teams because we're putting JMU and Tulane in there. If they're not putting them in, it's like they're playing Texas. They're going to put Texas in over Alabama. If it's Texas or Alabama last year and they lose 28 to 70 against Georgia, they put Texas in. If they're the last two teams. RAC Aaron: Yeah. Yeah. RY4N: You know what saying? RAC Chandler: No, because if they're in the top 12, they're in. If they're in the top 12 and they finish and go to the conference title, they are in no matter who they are. RY4N: Yes, in this scenario. RAC Aaron: And I think that is something that we see. We're going to see now in the 12 team. think when it was 14, it was never a guarantee. If you went there and you lost in your Auburn scenario, they're going to pick the winner of that game and three other teams. And, but if there was 12 Auburn would have still been in. They would have stayed in there. Um, and yeah, if Alabama was 13 going into that beat. RAC Chandler: Correct. RY4N: you RAC Chandler: And that's when it got expanded in the first place. RAC Aaron: Georgia in that scenario, then they go in. They get raised up in the rank after that. They probably get moved into the, committee. If they're 13th and they lose to Georgia in that scenario, they're out. They're, they have no chance to make it in. But I think if you're in the top 12, they're going to keep you in there because they do not want any teams pulling out of conference championship games because that's what will happen. They'll just stop. RAC Chandler: out. Correct. RY4N: Mm-hmm. But this is bias scenario. The SEC people that are in the committee are saying we need people to represent us from the SEC. And that just brings another bias scenario that we have to take bias out. We have to make it something else, even algorithm based system. RAC Aaron: I 100 % agree that 12, that top 12 needs to be both a human committee backed by statistical breakdown. Like you can't have it one way of just like, Hey, a committee of 12 SEC heads with eight big 10 representatives and one other guy. Sit there and say like, well, I think Arkansas deserves a slot here. And it's like Arkansas only won three games this year. And it's like, well, let's hear him out. You know, that's kind of what I feel like the rest of college football season, the sec right now. We were what? Eight teams last year into the of the 12, six to eight, something like that. And it does feel that way. Now there were just a lot of good teams in the sec. We lost pretty wholeheartedly early on in the playoffs. But, you know, we also had some great talent from Big 10. Like that, that's tough sometimes, but I don't think it's a reflection on conferences. But I think the more we devalue these games outside of it, whether it's conference championship, whether it's bowl games, whether our regular season games, and we keep having these stat padding systems. We're only going to be looking at like, well, they threw 3000 yards here. And it's like, well, Yes, but if they didn't play defense is worth it. That 3000 yards is a lot less impressive than a team that threw 2000 yards against the top defenses in the country back to back to back. You know, we have to look at this. RY4N: Are you talking about my Byron Brown? RAC Chandler: I was thinking exactly that. RY4N: Hey, don't talk bad about Brown. Only I get to talk bad about Byron Brown. That's my quarterback. RAC Aaron: I mean, no, no, but, but how many times do we see that where it's somebody's like, they're in the Heisman talk all the way at the end. We see him in the postseason and then all of a sudden it's like, ⁓ that was a rough game. RY4N: Darien Mensah. Clip it now and play this in s- eight months. RAC Aaron: But no, I agree. If they wanted to have a P five school or a ⁓ G five school in there, have them do a cut championship and the winner gets to show up. Maybe if they played somebody. Yeah, exactly. There there's a hard conversation that needs to happen about that. And RAC Chandler: But who are they playing against themselves? They're playing against another trash team. RY4N: Like, I'd be fine. Yeah, I- RAC Chandler: No, I think they just need to make it like an NIT style tournament for all those people because it's like the 1 % of D1 players that we talk about all the time. But there's also the 1 % of like P4 teams are like here and like everybody else is like here. And unless like, I don't know, some good player that played for one of those teams, like Josh Allen is coming out again and playing like it's not happening. RAC Aaron: Yep. I think that's true. Yeah, no, I, I absolutely agree. RY4N: Yeah, they transfer nowadays. Nowadays they go to a real school the next year. I would just be fine just getting rid of all the G5 schools from even playing in the playoffs. RAC Chandler: Exactly. I'm sorry to all G5 team fans out there that are listening to this. RY4N: See, but I feel too bad for y'all. That's why. RAC Aaron: No, hey, I like g5 teams. That's the thing. I think there's a, there is a spunkiness. There's a, there's a scrappiness in some g5 play that I agree. Yeah. RAC Chandler: But make them a different tournament. RY4N: Not in a winning way, but in a, we gave you a hard time today. That kind of thing. RAC Aaron: But you all, but you can also see when you watch, you know, G5 on G5 violence, ⁓ you see crazy stuff happen. You see trick plays that are drawn in middle school locker rooms, like stuff that should not happen in regular ball happen. Like, and there's some magical about that, but that's not going to work against a top four school. They're not going to like, you can't have. your center and the quarterback set up on a far hash and your entire line diff to the other side and have them not just obliterate them. But you'll see that every once in a while. Like you'll see that that's a G five kind of trick play. Those things work there. They would not work in the play house. RY4N: That's why you shouldn't be in. Great point. RAC Aaron: Yeah, I agree. And it's hard to say you want to give them the shot. You want to see them do it. But it's, but you are taking the opportunity away from a team that has a better chance to win. RY4N: It's because I feel bad though. RAC Chandler: Nope. actually win. Yes. Which is what it's about. RY4N: Exactly. I'd feel worse for them. I'd feel worse for them. They're playing to win to be the best team in the country. The other one's like, ⁓ we're just goofing off. RAC Chandler: I would rather have seen Texas and Notre Dame in than JMU and Tulane. RAC Aaron: And RY4N: Yes. RAC Aaron: Yeah. And in that case, if we are going to continue with that, get 24 teams. We give those teams still a shot and you have to your, you have your G five or get your G five schools down at the bottom playing around for games that you don't watch because you're watching the better matchups. No, no. RAC Chandler: Yeah, and nobody would ever watch it until it's like the semifinals. RY4N: No one to watch until it's like 10 or 12 teams. And then... RAC Aaron: Absolutely. And that is, that's the tough part about it is having it one way is, is taking out teams that have the opportunity. Having it the other is a more competitive format. So I agree until we fix that until that 12 team anywhere in that bracket that they want to do it. But I think if they go to 16, which I know has been thrown around there, kind of the worst. of it all, like I would rather see them at that 24 than a 16. The 16 is just the 12 issue, but with more teams that aren't going to win. RAC Chandler: And 24 is just the 16 and 12 issue with more teams that aren't going to win as well. RAC Aaron: Oh, absolutely. But that's what I'm saying. It's like, if you are doing 16, you might as well do 24 because you're going to have the same outcome. RAC Chandler: 324, let's just do a March Madden at 64. RAC Aaron: Hey, we can do that too. ⁓ RAC Chandler: Let's just have the whole season be a playoff. RY4N: We'll win the NIT though. RAC Aaron: I'm cool. Yeah. RAC Chandler: Let's the whole season be single elimination. RAC Aaron: Yeah. And that's, that's, guess what I'm getting at is if we are not adjusting it. Yeah. Gosh, that would be so funny. RAC Chandler: Alabama out week one. RY4N: Let's have, let's have Jeremiah Smith and Gerard McCoy run one's destroying style and the winner of that wins the national championship. RAC Chandler: and $10,000. RY4N: Yes, from destroying himself. owns, he owns, instead of Game Day, he just owns like SEC Network because instead of the game we're just doing that. Let's just have AI actually just decide who's gonna win all the games and then, and then, give him a trophy. Yeah, why do we even play games? RAC Chandler: like in all the destroying videos. RAC Aaron: You know what we, we boot up, we boot up NCAA 2014 and we run it through season simulator and whoever comes out on top, you just hand them the trophy. We don't have to play the games anymore. Just run it through simulator. RAC Chandler: They just never actually play them. RY4N: I am running Florida's Playbook and I'm PA Cross Post and ⁓ I am throwing the corner in cover two. RAC Aaron: No, no, and that's it. We do have to address it. We do need to come to, we need the committee to really think about it. Is this a, is this a, the best teams compete for the chance to win the playoff? That's what this is about. Or is this a attaboy, we're giving you some rewards. Here's some post season congratulations until they make that decision. That's going to be what it is. Like I said, one day we'll have a conversation about. RY4N: Mm-hmm. RAC Aaron: Changing up conferences, way to work with that and adapting college football to a more competitive format. We're not ready for that one yet. We're out of time to even broach it now. So I'm sure it'll be something we have a conversation about during the dead time of this off season. But for now, we'll leave it up there. Leave a comment. Tell us what you think about playoffs. There are people with opinions across the board. I want to see what people have as ideas. for how to fix this better than the way it sits right now. Or if you want to defend the way it is right now, go for it. I'm always open to have my mind changed. But in the meantime, we'll say one of these three solutions is the answer until proven otherwise. The college football committee, go ahead. You can watch this episode, stamp on it, give us credit. Say it's the Aaron playoff system. You know, 24 teams in going to see them. But until then, we even have that clarification from them. Thank you to Ryan and Chandler for joining me, listening to my insane proposition. And thank you listeners for coming out and dealing with us. Look forward to, oh go for it. RAC Chandler: And to show our thank you to you guys, we created some bonus content that will be in just YouTube video form. ⁓ As May 15th that we're recording this, we went out to our local football field. We recreated some of the throws that Byron Brown went through in the spring game at Auburn. And Ryan talked us through them. We got two different camera angles. We got mics on all of us. So we went through and tried our best to recreate those throws. Obviously no pressure, no... Defense no offensive line. It was just a vacuum. We were creating it but If you want to go check that out, that'll be hopefully coming out this week sometime around when you see this episode So that'll be a separate YouTube video posted RY4N: a little free bonus content and comment the name of one of us who you thought had the best system and comment bye bye if you would like to get rid of the committee as a whole like me. RAC Aaron: You Well, that'll do us here. So, till next week.
