- 0:02Welcome to Pick Up and Deliver,
- 0:05the podcast where I pick up my audio recorder
- 0:07as I step off the train and deliver an episode
- 0:09to you while I walk home.
- 0:11I'm Brendan Riley.
- 0:12(upbeat music)
- 0:14Well good afternoon listeners, it's a cloudy,
- 0:23somewhat gloomy but moderately fun day here in suburban Chicago.
- 0:28I'm walking home and the weather is reasonably nice.
- 0:32It's not too cold.
- 0:33I've got a toque and some gloves on
- 0:35but I'm not feeling super cold.
- 0:38I probably could survive without the gloves
- 0:40but I like to be cozy.
- 0:42It is cloudy though, not sunny at all.
- 0:44It's plenty bright though.
- 0:46So all in all, pretty nice day.
- 0:49Well I was looking at some games,
- 0:51looking at my games, thinking about what games have I played
- 0:54recently and we hung out with some friends
- 0:57and they were talking about how they liked Res Arcana
- 0:59and I've been playing a little bit of Res Arcana lately
- 1:02on board game arena.
- 1:03So I was thinking about that.
- 1:04A couple different groups were playing Res Arcana
- 1:07at my board game club this week.
- 1:09So I've got it in my head and I was looking
- 1:11and I realized I actually have logged.
- 1:14That is the second or third most played game
- 1:17that I've logged in my BG stats app.
- 1:20My most played game is Netrunner
- 1:21with something like 394 plays.
- 1:24My second most played game is Through the Ages
- 1:27with something like 244 plays
- 1:30and my third most played game is Res Arcana
- 1:34with I think 98 plays, something like that.
- 1:37Maybe it was 120 or something, I'll have to look.
- 1:42But it's a lot and it's my third most played.
- 1:48So I looked through my I Search Res Arcana
- 1:51in my podcast archive or the search function on the website
- 1:55and I found only two episodes
- 1:57where I mentioned Res Arcana in the title.
- 2:00This was Res Arcana and Roam, a board game.
- 2:05Well at the time it was shooting from the hip episode
- 2:08in which I talked about having played Res Arcana
- 2:12for the first time.
- 2:13And then I mentioned it again as the subject of an episode,
- 2:17maybe 200 episodes ago in a duel with Mottainai.
- 2:20So thinking about Res Arcana and Mottainai
- 2:23in relationship to one another.
- 2:24So having those two things in order,
- 2:27yet Rezarkana deserves a little love.
- 2:29So I thought I would do a message from the deep
- 2:31about Res Arcana.
- 2:32The title of the episode is Things I Like
- 2:35about Res Arcana.
- 2:36To start off, for those of you who are unfamiliar with it,
- 2:39Res Arcana is an engine building game
- 2:42from Tom Layman, King of the Engine Building Games.
- 2:45Tom Layman created Race for the Galaxy,
- 2:48role for the Galaxy along with someone else.
- 2:52He created Dice Realms, which is not a game I've played,
- 2:56but does have an engine building component.
- 3:00He created The City, which is a game I enjoy,
- 3:03I do it, it's a very fast engine builder.
- 3:06He later republished that one as Jump Drive,
- 3:09I think it's called, which is a race
- 3:11for the Galaxy themed version, very quick.
- 3:14Generally he is very good at making games
- 3:17where your goal is to find an interesting combo
- 3:20and kind of go quickly.
- 3:22And that's what Res Arcana is.
- 3:23In Res Arcana, you have a mage
- 3:27and you have a deck of eight cards.
- 3:29You shuffle up those cards and you draw three of them.
- 3:32And then on your turn, you have a number
- 3:35of different things you can do to play the card,
- 3:37to do with the cards.
- 3:39And then at the end of the round, when you pass,
- 3:42you get to draw one card.
- 3:43Now there is an element where there are also
- 3:45these magic items, artifacts that are called.
- 3:48And you get one artifact to use for the round.
- 3:52And then when you pass, you have to put it back
- 3:54and take a different one.
- 3:55And then the third big thing is there are these tiles
- 3:59that go in the middle of the board.
- 4:00They're called places of power.
- 4:02And these are cards that you could buy
- 4:05that can give you special actions.
- 4:10The goal of the game is to get 10 points
- 4:14or if you're playing with the Pearl expansion, 13 points.
- 4:17You get points, oh, there's also these cards called monuments.
- 4:24I think that's it.
- 4:24So on your turn, you can, oh, there's five different resources.
- 4:29They come in sort of the four main elemental colors,
- 4:32black, green, blue, and red.
- 4:35They have, I don't remember exactly what the names of them are.
- 4:38It's death, life, the blue one is elan
- 4:42and the red one is fire, I think.
- 4:43That's elan: e-l-a-n, not Elon, like Elon Musk.
- 4:47And then the yellow one is gold.
- 4:49So those four main elements and sometimes gold,
- 4:52you can use to pay for cards in your hand
- 4:56and put them into your tableau.
- 4:57And once a card in your hand has been put into your tableau,
- 5:00it is now something that you can use each turn
- 5:04to do magical stuff, to do things.
- 5:08And essentially, what you're trying to do
- 5:09is you're trying to build up an engine
- 5:11that will earn you points in some way.
- 5:12Some cards come with points.
- 5:14There are a bunch of dragons and a bunch of other cards
- 5:16that have points.
- 5:17Most of them don't though.
- 5:18And then there are cards that will generate points.
- 5:21Usually, that's what the places of power are.
- 5:24The places of power can generate points usually
- 5:27by converting a certain number of resources into points.
- 5:31And so your goal is to build an engine
- 5:34with the combination of cards that you have
- 5:36to create, to get a bunch of resources, which you can then
- 5:39convert into points.
- 5:40Now, aside from the places of power
- 5:42converting resources directly to points,
- 5:44another way you can get points is to end playing cards
- 5:47that have points on them.
- 5:48The third way is there are these monument cards
- 5:52and each monument costs four gold resources to buy.
- 5:56And the monuments have between one and three points on them.
- 5:59The monuments that only have one point generally will have
- 6:01a really good power as well.
- 6:03The monuments that cost two points, the power is a little less.
- 6:06The monuments that cost three points,
- 6:08I think there's only one actually, the cost three points.
- 6:11And it does not have power at all.
- 6:13It's just where three points.
- 6:14So you play your cards and those cards
- 6:18then have powers on them that can give you resources.
- 6:21And often it's convert resources from one type into another.
- 6:24And the combination of these conversion powers
- 6:29gives you your engine.
- 6:31You can also discard cards for--
- 6:34if you discard a card, you can get one gold or two
- 6:36resources of your choice for discarding your card.
- 6:40And then, like I said, all the cards have different powers
- 6:42on them.
- 6:43So what do I like about this game?
- 6:45That was a very tortured explanation
- 6:47that I don't think did justice to what the game is,
- 6:50but hopefully gives you some idea about how it works.
- 6:52So the first thing I liked about this game is the drafting.
- 6:55Res Arcana, once you've played a couple times
- 6:58or even they recommend your second play,
- 7:00you start doing this.
- 7:01On your first play, there are generic sets that everybody gets.
- 7:05You have four cards that you get automatically.
- 7:08And then you get four dealt to you.
- 7:11And that's your deck.
- 7:12There is no trading cards or whatever.
- 7:15In the full game, instead, what you do is you play a draft.
- 7:18Everybody's dealt four cards.
- 7:19You pick one, add it to your deck, pass the three
- 7:23to the next player, pick one from the new group, pass it,
- 7:26pick one, pass it, take one.
- 7:28So at the end of the first draft, you have four cards.
- 7:31Then everybody gets four new cards,
- 7:33and you do the same thing again.
- 7:34The idea is that you now have seen most of the cards
- 7:38that have come into play, and you have had a chance
- 7:42to try to build a set of cards that are going to work
- 7:45well together.
- 7:46I like this because it rewards thoughtful play.
- 7:51It reduces the chance that somebody is going to win
- 7:54because they got dealt a couple good cards that combo together.
- 7:57They have to chose and to take those.
- 7:59Now you still could have that situation, right?
- 8:02If you get dealt a hand of four cards,
- 8:04and there's two equally good cards in it,
- 8:06you could take one and pass the hand to the next player
- 8:10who maybe just took a card that combos well
- 8:13with the other good card, and now you hand them a good card.
- 8:17That's the way it is.
- 8:18Drafting games are always a little uneven that way.
- 8:22But I really like the opportunity to try to build
- 8:26towards something.
- 8:27When you're doing this building, you can see the places of power
- 8:32that are in play in the game.
- 8:33So being able to tell what's coming up, really,
- 8:36I think makes a difference in terms of trying to anticipate
- 8:39and plan, and then you also get two mages
- 8:43and you can pick which of the mages you want to play with.
- 8:45So the mix of different options in the game
- 8:48I think really creates a nice possibility for complex play.
- 8:53In that regard, it reminds you a little bit of something
- 8:57like 7 Wonders, which also makes great use of drafting
- 9:00and It's a Wonderful World, which I think it's a wonderful world.
- 9:05It shares a lot of DNA with Res Arcana
- 9:06because of the idea that you discard cards to get resources
- 9:09or you build them and that helps your engine.
- 9:12Next up, we have the emergent complexity.
- 9:15One of the things I really like about Res Arcana is
- 9:17almost every given card is relatively simple.
- 9:20When you look at a card, you can usually tell what it's supposed
- 9:23to do.
- 9:24There's maybe a dozen different icon types
- 9:28that you might encounter.
- 9:29So once you've learned those icons,
- 9:30then it's pretty easy to figure out what a card is supposed
- 9:33to do and the way that you use any individual card.
- 9:37The implications of it might not always be strong,
- 9:40but you can understand how it works most of the time.
- 9:43When you combine that with the fact that all of the cards
- 9:46have interesting things on them,
- 9:48and they often interact in interesting ways,
- 9:50what you can end up with is a really satisfying set of cards
- 9:56and powers that when they interact,
- 9:59result in very robust complex actions.
- 10:03If I watch the high level Res Arcana players
- 10:06on recorded streams or whatever,
- 10:08some of the things they can do with these cards is just wild.
- 10:11And so far exceeds what I'm able to do
- 10:14that it's really very remarkable.
- 10:16This is one of the things I like best about interesting games
- 10:19is the way that you can master the rules relatively quickly,
- 10:24but the depth at which complexity emerges
- 10:27or the possibility of complexity that emerges
- 10:31from the interaction of these relatively simple rules
- 10:33is really amazing.
- 10:35As I said, Res Arcana is the top,
- 10:38is among the top options for me in terms of emergent complexity.
- 10:43You know, something like chess, of course, has a lot of that,
- 10:46but thinking about games in the modern sphere
- 10:50that have that kind of interplay,
- 10:52I have trouble thinking of another one as robust as Res Arcana
- 10:57that also has as light a rule set,
- 10:59'cause it's certainly not light,
- 11:01but the rule set is very approachable,
- 11:03as opposed to even something like Race for the Galaxy,
- 11:06the rule set gets pretty complicated pretty quick.
- 11:08You have to understand all these symbols.
- 11:10Symbols are much more obtuse.
- 11:12I guess probably The City would be one example.
- 11:15I'm not super keen to set that up
- 11:18with another Tom Lehmann game,
- 11:21but I am, you know, here's another one.
- 11:24You can think of Fantasy Realms or Forest Shuffle,
- 11:28but forest shuffle particularly is a game where I think
- 11:31the rule set is relatively light.
- 11:34Fantasy realms, I think the rules you use
- 11:36to get your cards are relatively light,
- 11:38but the scoring rules are very complicated.
- 11:41And so that is one of the challenges of that game,
- 11:43is I think the complexity with which you have to wrestle
- 11:47in order to figure out your score is very high.
- 11:50Now that's true in Res Arcana too,
- 11:52in terms of you have to struggle with how are you gonna make
- 11:54your engine get you the 10 points before anybody else does.
- 11:58And then just, I don't think I shared the end game.
- 12:00Like I said, you're going for 10 points or 13 if the pearls
- 12:03are in the game.
- 12:04And the way that you assess that is at the end of each round
- 12:07after everyone has passed,
- 12:09then you check to see does anybody have 10 points.
- 12:11If anyone has 10 points, the end of the game is triggered,
- 12:14and you check how many people have,
- 12:16like who's got the most points?
- 12:18So somebody having 10 points can trigger the end,
- 12:20but they might not win.
- 12:22And indeed, it's not uncommon if people have there
- 12:25are a couple cards that you can play
- 12:26where after the end game is triggered,
- 12:29then they do one more thing.
- 12:30And sometimes they'll give somebody two or three extra points.
- 12:33So, yeah, so emergent complexity is crucial there.
- 12:37The third thing that I like about Res Arcana that I want to mention
- 12:40is small but critical interaction,
- 12:43or minimal but critical interaction.
- 12:46Unlike a Carl Chudyk game like Innovation or Mottainai.
- 12:51Res Arcana is not full of brutal backstabbing
- 12:56social interaction mechanisms,
- 12:58but it does have a couple really strong ones
- 13:02that are very compelling.
- 13:04The dragon cards are often able to attack the other players
- 13:09and often it's a matter of everybody has to discard
- 13:13one resource of a certain type,
- 13:15and the rule is if you don't have the one of the type
- 13:17you have to do, then you have to do two.
- 13:20And having to deal with that can be a real bummer.
- 13:25If your engine is wound really tight,
- 13:28if the things you have to do to win points
- 13:31are very narrowly confined or very tightly tuned,
- 13:35having somebody take a resource or even two resources from you
- 13:39can be brutal in terms of the rhythm you've set up,
- 13:41especially if you're sprinting for an early finish.
- 13:44That said, it's not a huge part of the game.
- 13:47You have to be aware of it and you have to be ready for it,
- 13:49but I've often gone whole plays of the game where nobody
- 13:53put into play cards that take other people's resources.
- 13:57I like that it's there and the danger of it to be wary of,
- 14:01but it's not so intense that that's the flavor of the game.
- 14:05That's some minimal but critical interaction.
- 14:10And finally, the last thing I want to mention is skill growth.
- 14:13This is one of those games where over time I have gotten better at it.
- 14:16I don't think I've gotten as good at it as I should
- 14:18for the number of plays that I have,
- 14:19but that's always been a problem for me.
- 14:22I think I am a moderately good player of games,
- 14:25but I'm not great.
- 14:26And so it takes me a long time to get really good at a game.
- 14:29I don't know that there are very many games I would claim I'm really good at.
- 14:32Not many for certain.
- 14:33That said, Res Arcana is a lot of fun.
- 14:36And as you play it, you come to recognize some valuable combos.
- 14:39You come to see some over the ways that you can be a more successful player.
- 14:44And I really like the possibility of finding myself gaining skill
- 14:48as I go along while I play these games.
- 14:51So I don't have a lot of other games to point to.
- 14:54I think a lot of the really complex games that I enjoy developing your skill
- 14:57is a key part of playing and playing a game lots of times is how you do that.
- 15:01But I think Res Arcana is one of the best to enable that possibility.
- 15:05So, dear listener, what do you think of Res Arcana?
- 15:07When have you played it?
- 15:08How have you enjoyed it?
- 15:10Head over to boardgamegeek guild 3269 and share your thoughts on playing Res Arcana.
- 15:15You could also head over to board game arena.
- 15:16Look for Wombat99 and start up a game of Res Arcana.
- 15:19I'm always happy to play one.
- 15:21We have several other guild members who like playing as well.
- 15:23So we could get some larger group games going rather than just two players.
- 15:28And I think that would be fun.
- 15:29With that, I'll say thank you for joining me in my walk today.
- 15:32I hope your next walk as this pleasant as mine was.
- 15:34Bye bye.
