- 0:59SPEAKER_02: We are coming at you tonight with another one of our class reviews.
- 1:04SPEAKER_02: And what are we looking at tonight, boys?
- 1:07SPEAKER_01: The Barbarian.
- 1:08SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 1:09SPEAKER_01: The Barbarian.
- 1:12SPEAKER_02: Give me the fury.
- 1:14SPEAKER_02: Well, and with that, give me your initial thoughts on a barbarian.
- 1:21SPEAKER_00: A barbarian is so much fun.
- 1:23SPEAKER_00: It is your quintessential like DD.
- 1:26SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna go in there and smash somebody's face.
- 1:29SPEAKER_02: And I think Brett, I think you're the only one of us that has played a barbarian react.
- 1:33SPEAKER_00: I did.
- 1:34SPEAKER_00: I have played a mountain dwarf barbarian um who was nicknamed Tubby.
- 1:41SPEAKER_02: Oh yes.
- 1:43SPEAKER_00: Uh he was a raging alcoholic who every time he would start to sober up, he would go into this furious rage.
- 1:51SPEAKER_00: He needed more alcohol.
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: And just shimmy up somebody's leg and beat the shit out of him.
- 1:56SPEAKER_00: And just yes, and just beat everybody to a pulp.
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: Uh he's so much fun.
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: A barbarian is like, if you just want to smash and ask questions later, this is who you need to play.
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: It is so much fun.
- 2:09SPEAKER_00: It's uh a little light on some of the other features which we'll touch on, but a a great entry-level character uh or a class type.
- 2:18SPEAKER_01: I mean, really, it's a fighter on steroids, is what it is.
- 2:21SPEAKER_01: You you get some cool other features that fighters don't get that allow you, if anything, to cause more damage.
- 2:27SPEAKER_01: So if you want something if you want to go simple but not so simple as like a fighter, then this is probably the class for you.
- 2:34SPEAKER_02: I think that it's one of the most tanky classes.
- 2:38SPEAKER_02: Oh, yes.
- 2:39SPEAKER_02: Because it can't necessarily do as much stack damage or you know, heavy, heavy melee damage, maybe as an advanced level fighter, but it can take more hits than and you can't kill it.
- 2:51SPEAKER_00: No, you end up with so many features later on as you level up that if you go down to zero, you can just pop back up.
- 2:58SPEAKER_00: And there's so many different ways that you can do that same type of thing that a barbarian is your damage soaking up all the damage coming in to protect the other characters in your party.
- 3:10SPEAKER_01: And I think the great thing is you can do that from the get-go.
- 3:13SPEAKER_01: Like there's an you don't need to level up to level five before you can do that.
- 3:16SPEAKER_01: It's like they can start taking the hits right away, level one.
- 3:19SPEAKER_01: Whereas, you know, like a wizard is cowering in the back hoping they don't take a punch because they're gonna go down if somebody beats him in the face once.
- 3:26SPEAKER_02: So I think that the barbarian has like the highest hit dice in the game.
- 3:30SPEAKER_02: So when you start out as a level one character, your HP is gonna be higher than almost anyone else in the party.
- 3:36SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 3:36SPEAKER_02: They get that d12, which is a huge benefit.
- 3:39SPEAKER_00: So I've been looking up some of the different pop call pop culture references of different major barbarians that have shown up across different medium.
- 3:48SPEAKER_00: I mean, the first and foremost is Conan the Barbarian.
- 3:51SPEAKER_00: It's I mean, it's in his name.
- 3:53SPEAKER_00: Sure.
- 3:53SPEAKER_00: Uh he's kind of the quintessential barbarian.
- 3:56SPEAKER_00: But some of the other ones I've been finding um recently in the newest uh Box Machina, Grog.
- 4:05SPEAKER_00: Grog.
- 4:06SPEAKER_00: Grog is a a very, a very high-level barbarian, especially at the end game.
- 4:12SPEAKER_00: Uh ends up switching to a dual class but primarily barbarian, Hulga in the new DD movie, and then another one, Hulk.
- 4:22SPEAKER_00: Oh Hulk is one that if he just epitomizes rage.
- 4:28SPEAKER_00: When Hulk goes into rage, look out.
- 4:31SPEAKER_02: I feel like I've never really thought about it that way, but yeah, when you when you look at Hulk, it's very obvious when he rages and when he's not in rage.
- 4:39SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 4:40SPEAKER_00: Especially early, like early Avengers Hulk, where it's like he's not in control of his Hulk form.
- 4:47SPEAKER_00: That's where his rage really overtakes his persona and just that's all he's gonna do.
- 4:53SPEAKER_00: He's Hulk smash.
- 4:54SPEAKER_02: Pre-Avengers Hulk.
- 4:56SPEAKER_00: Yes, yes.
- 4:58SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 4:59SPEAKER_02: Alright, well, if you kind of like dive into that a little bit more and look at the quick build that the players' handbook sort of outlines, what do you guys see there?
- 5:07SPEAKER_01: Well, I mean, to no surprise, I mean, you're gonna you're gonna stack things in constitution and strength uh to start off.
- 5:14SPEAKER_01: You're gonna be fairly low on intelligence.
- 5:16SPEAKER_01: So if anybody's seen Vox Machina and you think of Grog, Grog is not the smartest character in the in the show.
- 5:23SPEAKER_01: Uh I I'm sorry, but I keep thinking about the moment from season two where Yeah, he drops out the bottom.
- 5:29SPEAKER_01: Good thing these titties were here.
- 5:31SPEAKER_01: I knew where you were going.
- 5:33SPEAKER_00: Ross's favorite epic moment of the entire series.
- 5:36SPEAKER_00: I can't think of Grog and not think of that line.
- 5:39SPEAKER_00: Oh my god.
- 5:40SPEAKER_00: But if if you're just an average player trying to get into a barbarian, I think you need another solid stat to play into the role-playing in between all the combat.
- 5:51SPEAKER_00: Because yes, your strength and your constitution does really well in all of those moments of battle, but in between all of those moments, what are you going to do?
- 6:01SPEAKER_02: I think you have to be careful with your dump stat, because Brett's won't exactly right.
- 6:05SPEAKER_02: You have to dump strength as number one, right?
- 6:08SPEAKER_02: Everything's got to go to strength because a lot of your rage.
- 6:11SPEAKER_00: Everything goes to strength.
- 6:12SPEAKER_02: Yeah, or based on your strength score, your strength attacks.
- 6:15SPEAKER_02: And constitution, if your strength's high and you're a melee fighter, you're you're probably a frontline fighter, right?
- 6:21SPEAKER_02: So your constitution's got to be high, so you've got a high AC.
- 6:24SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 6:25SPEAKER_02: And if you use the unarmored defense that a barbarian has, you know, you can have a pretty high AC without wearing any armor.
- 6:31SPEAKER_02: So the constitution score and actually your decks kind of comes into play there too with that.
- 6:36SPEAKER_02: But I agree, you can't just tank all of your social skills, or else you kind of end up with a character that's not gonna be that fun to play outside of combat.
- 6:45SPEAKER_02: Day-to-day, what are you gonna do?
- 6:47SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 6:47SPEAKER_02: What happens if you end up with an entire four-hour session uh discussing something with nobles, trying to convince them of something, and you literally don't get to swing your axe to any faces?
- 6:59SPEAKER_02: Like, what do you do?
- 7:00SPEAKER_00: And I mean, yeah, you can pipe in and have some like dumbass comments, but uh over the long term, when you have an entire campaign, that's gonna get kind of boring.
- 7:12SPEAKER_00: It's fun for a little while, it's great for a short campaign or a one-shot, but if you're doing a full campaign, you need a little depth to your character.
- 7:22SPEAKER_01: So, so in your guys' opinions, where what's your dump stat then?
- 7:26SPEAKER_01: Because I mean you could make arguments for several things.
- 7:28SPEAKER_01: Charisma is gonna help you in conversations, wisdom's gonna help you in terms of insight.
- 7:34SPEAKER_01: There's a lot of different ways you could go.
- 7:37SPEAKER_00: So, what do you think?
- 7:38SPEAKER_00: I think you could pick one and adapt your character to fit.
- 7:42SPEAKER_00: So if it's if you're dumping dumping charisma or you're dumping wisdom, that's fine.
- 7:48SPEAKER_00: But you gotta have at least one other stat that you're leveling up or you're dumping some extra bonus into that can help out your role-playing over the long term.
- 7:58SPEAKER_02: I think personally for me, I would end up dumping charisma, but instead of playing it like he's completely off-putting, he or she's completely off-putting, I would maybe just dump it into like a, you know, their personal hygiene isn't great.
- 8:12SPEAKER_02: Or something along that lines of the charisma track to where maybe physically they're not the most appealing person, but they could still carry out socially.
- 8:21SPEAKER_02: Because I think that that intelligence and that wisdom is gonna come in handy more in those conversations than charisma.
- 8:27SPEAKER_02: And I I will definitely think it depends on your party makeup.
- 8:31SPEAKER_02: Right?
- 8:31SPEAKER_02: Oh yeah.
- 8:36SPEAKER_02: I can choose charisma as a dump stat and we'll be okay.
- 8:39SPEAKER_01: I I would agree.
- 8:40SPEAKER_01: I would dump charisma as well.
- 8:41SPEAKER_01: And but I would dump it for a different reason.
- 8:43SPEAKER_01: I would dump it for the intimidation, if nothing else.
- 8:46SPEAKER_01: Because when I think of a barbarian, I think of somebody that can really scare the crap out of people.
- 8:51SPEAKER_01: So if you're charismatic and you can make those roles to intimid intimidate people, makes perfect sense and stereotypically fits the barbarian type, especially if you're in a party where people are meeting those other stats.
- 9:02SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 9:04SPEAKER_02: I think that kind of leads us into we've even touched on a few of these, I feel like, but pros and cons for new players wanting to get into a barbarian.
- 9:14SPEAKER_02: Start with a pro side.
- 9:15SPEAKER_00: I mean, when you're jumping into an early level, a level one, two, three character, your barbarian is gonna be able to jump in and beat the baddies right away, especially with some of the innate um defenses that they get, being able to be resistant to different types of damage.
- 9:37SPEAKER_00: Having that really early on in your character sheet is really important because as you first get started in those level one, two, three characters, you're gonna be going up against goblins, um, orcs, just little basic zombies, skeletons, things that are gonna be doing your basic type of types of damage that a barbarian can really take and keep rolling with and kind of slough off a lot of that damage.
- 10:02SPEAKER_01: I I think another pro is you get your rage at level one.
- 10:05SPEAKER_01: I mean, this is not a class where you're waiting till level three and beyond to pick things up, you're getting it right away, which allows you to not necessarily play this character fully, but you're doing their main thing right off the bat.
- 10:16SPEAKER_01: And I think that's very appealing to a lot of first-time players is jumping in and being able to do the cool things with a character.
- 10:22SPEAKER_02: I 100% agree.
- 10:24SPEAKER_02: And I really think too that one of the advantages that a barbarian brings to the table right off the bat is that they're proficient with all weapons, simple and melee.
- 10:33SPEAKER_02: So you can immediately add a proficiency bonus to your attack rolls.
- 10:36SPEAKER_00: That's huge.
- 10:38SPEAKER_00: And if you if you've seen the DD movie, you can reference Holga being able to grab a stone brick off of an alleyway and just beat people to a pulp with it, or just grab an axe when in the middle of a battle and just roll with it.
- 10:51SPEAKER_00: You don't have to worry about if you're percent per if you're proficient, I can proficient with something.
- 11:02SPEAKER_00: Doesn't matter if you're proficient or not in it, uh, you can just grab a weapon that's sitting on the sideline and just roll with it.
- 11:09SPEAKER_02: I also think that starting wise, if you're just looking at the starting equipment that typically comes with the barbarian in the basic rules or the player's handbook, they can start out with a great axe.
- 11:19SPEAKER_02: Does 1d12 slashing damage.
- 11:22SPEAKER_00: That's huge damage for a first-level character.
- 11:25SPEAKER_00: Another thing that I've noticed is early on you get reckless attack.
- 11:30SPEAKER_00: So that is where you can attack recklessly.
- 11:34SPEAKER_00: So it's giving you advantage on your melee attacks every single time using when you're using strength.
- 11:41SPEAKER_00: The downside of it is any attacks against you get an uh advantage against you.
- 11:46SPEAKER_00: But if you're using that to finish off a baddie and just can go in there and do the finishing blow on something, hell yeah.
- 11:55SPEAKER_02: Sorry, I was in the middle of a beer uh drink there.
- 11:58SPEAKER_02: Uh so one of the other things that I appreciate about a barbarian as well is that your major decision of your character arc happens at level three.
- 12:08SPEAKER_02: So it's not like you have to make it day one, but you also don't have to sit there and wait until something like fifth level, right?
- 12:16SPEAKER_02: At level three, you're starting to hit paths.
- 12:19SPEAKER_02: Do you guys have any other pros and cons before we switch into paths?
- 12:23SPEAKER_00: I would say there's definitely some cons.
- 12:25SPEAKER_00: Uh you're very limited on your role-playing ability.
- 12:29SPEAKER_00: Like it's not as wide open as some of the other classes where you can go a bunch of different ways, you're gonna smash things.
- 12:37SPEAKER_00: But how you can adapt that smashingness to have a little bit of substance behind it is important when you're starting to build a character.
- 12:46SPEAKER_01: And unlike the cleric, which we've talked about in previous episodes, if you want something with some magic to it, this is not the class to go with.
- 12:54SPEAKER_01: Like there's there's going to be some paths where you get some features that are magic-y, but if you're sticking to general rules player handbook, this is not gonna be someplace where you can dabble in the magic that's available to you in in uh uh Feirune.
- 13:10SPEAKER_00: Uh one other thing is you're pretty much stuck to the ground.
- 13:14SPEAKER_00: You can jump, you can leap, those types of things, but you're not gonna be flying, you're not gonna be doing a lot of uh ranged attacks.
- 13:22SPEAKER_00: You're gonna be mostly a melee combatant.
- 13:24SPEAKER_00: And so that's gonna be something that you're gonna have to work around and adapt your character, especially further on into the higher levels.
- 13:30SPEAKER_02: That's what I had marked down as my number one con is that this particular build typically is terrible at ranged combat.
- 13:39SPEAKER_02: Unless you find some sort of an additional weapon you can pick up, but the biggest hurdle our barbarian runs into is that typically ranged attacks are dexterity-based.
- 13:50SPEAKER_02: And a barbarian is a strength-based character.
- 13:53SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 13:54SPEAKER_01: Which stay tuned for a future episode on multi-classing, because we'll get there eventually as well.
- 13:58SPEAKER_00: And your range has to if you're if you're dealing with your rage, you also have to be using your melee attacks, which are strength-based, in order to keep your rage.
- 14:08SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 14:08SPEAKER_00: So if you're attacking from range distance, your rage is gonna elapse.
- 14:13SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 14:13SPEAKER_02: Yeah, rage doesn't apply to ranged attacks, but right.
- 14:18SPEAKER_00: And that's ruining a major feature.
- 14:20SPEAKER_00: Extra bonus damage for your character.
- 14:23SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I mean it takes away your character's strength, literally.
- 14:26SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 14:27SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 14:28SPEAKER_02: Alright, well, paths.
- 14:30SPEAKER_02: So I think that the uh basic rules only present one path to new characters, and that is the path of the berserker, I believe is the one in the basic rules.
- 14:42SPEAKER_02: Decent option?
- 14:44SPEAKER_01: I I mean I think so.
- 14:45SPEAKER_01: I mean it's basically a buff to things you can already do.
- 14:47SPEAKER_01: So it's gonna allow you to um it talks about like going into a frenzy, mindless rage, intimidating presence, uh, at different levels.
- 14:56SPEAKER_01: Um basically it's it's turning things that would normally take actions into bonus actions and allowing you to do more on your turn, depending on what you're talking about.
- 15:04SPEAKER_01: That's generally what it is.
- 15:06SPEAKER_01: It's it's like I said, it's buffing things you can already do.
- 15:09SPEAKER_00: That's the the character I was playing, Tubby, the barbarian, he was a Pathbaz Path of the Berserker.
- 15:16SPEAKER_02: And I think that it offers some huge action economy, right?
- 15:19SPEAKER_02: Because immediately at third level, you can start using a bonus action to make a melee weapon attack.
- 15:25SPEAKER_02: Now, sure, you suffer a level of exhaustion, which can get you into a lot of trouble, but if you're careful about it and you maintain that, that's huge as far as third level goes, being able to take an extra attack on your turn to finish a character?
- 15:39SPEAKER_02: Well, in a D you if you have a a D12 weapon, oh yeah.
- 15:44SPEAKER_00: You're doing that's huge.
- 15:45SPEAKER_00: Big damage.
- 15:46SPEAKER_00: You can one or you can wham bam kill off a character and then rest right after that.
- 15:51unknown: Right.
- 15:52SPEAKER_01: Especially when two levels late later, you're getting the two attacks on your attack action anyway.
- 15:57SPEAKER_01: So bonus action.
- 15:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 15:59SPEAKER_01: So you're getting lots of attacks with that D12.
- 16:01SPEAKER_01: I mean, that's that is a big flippin' deal.
- 16:04SPEAKER_01: Uh the mindless rage feature that you get in there is also interesting because like once you rage, uh, you're not able to be uh charmed or frightened.
- 16:13SPEAKER_01: So depending on enemies and the campaign you're in, there's certain situations that that could come in really handy.
- 16:19SPEAKER_01: Um and I believe the way it's set up would be like if you are charmed or frightened and you go into a rage, you drop that while you're in the rage.
- 16:26SPEAKER_01: So it's like if ever if for some reason your entire party becomes charmed or frightened for some reason, and then you have the ability to go into the rage, all of a sudden you're free to do that amount of damage that we were just talking about.
- 16:38SPEAKER_01: And then eventually you're gonna have to go back, and then at higher levels you can rage more often, things like that.
- 16:43SPEAKER_01: So there's some really cool options in there uh with the path of the berserker for sure.
- 16:47SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 16:48SPEAKER_02: Well, I think the other option then that the player's handbook opens up to you is the path of the totem warrior, which is very different than the path of the berserker.
- 16:57SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah.
- 16:58SPEAKER_01: I think this one is like if you if you want a barbarian that's not necessarily smash, smash, smash, uh, the the the the path of the totem warrior really gives you that spiritual connection because at different levels you're you're creating like um aspect of the beast, uh tomatic attunement where you're picking a specific animal and you're gaining abilities from that animal.
- 17:22SPEAKER_01: And the cool thing is you never have to choose the same animal.
- 17:25SPEAKER_01: So if you there's always four, so or three.
- 17:27SPEAKER_01: There's always three bear, eagle, wolf, and if you choose one at the at an early level, you don't necessarily have to choose that one later, which I think is it gives you a little freedom to kind of mix and match and stuff in there, which is kind of cool.
- 17:41SPEAKER_02: I also felt like this is one that leans maybe into one of those magic-esque feels because of the boons that you're granted from those totems specifically.
- 17:50SPEAKER_02: So if you're looking for a class that maybe has that feel, this is a path for you.
- 17:56SPEAKER_00: What other what other paths are there in some of the other supplemental books?
- 18:00SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so some of the other supplemental books, um, outside of the player's handbook and the basic rules, they've got the path of the ancestral guardian, um, which kind of boils down to protection via old dead guys.
- 18:11SPEAKER_02: Um pretty cool.
- 18:13SPEAKER_02: Uh another one is the path of the battle rager, and this one is specific just to dwarves.
- 18:19SPEAKER_02: Um I didn't feel like it actually opened up that many great possibilities, but if you're playing a dwarf, it's kind of cool.
- 18:27SPEAKER_02: Battle Rager.
- 18:28SPEAKER_02: I mean, it just sounds cool.
- 18:29SPEAKER_02: Um we got the Path of the Beast, which I thought was actually super badass.
- 18:34SPEAKER_02: So it almost opens up like a little bit of umitic pieces there.
- 18:39SPEAKER_02: Um we got the Path of the Storm Herald, which gives you the ability to basically buff an entire party.
- 18:46SPEAKER_02: Not until you get to 10th level, but it does have some pretty cool features there.
- 18:50SPEAKER_02: Um there's the Path of the Zilla Zealot, um, which has some pretty cool high-level features.
- 18:55SPEAKER_02: Once again, your lower level features aren't that great.
- 18:58SPEAKER_02: And then one last one is the path of wild magic.
- 19:01SPEAKER_02: And this is the most magic-esque path you can choose for Barbarian.
- 19:07SPEAKER_02: Um, and the wild magic effects are pretty neat there.
- 19:09SPEAKER_02: It's similar to rolling like on the wild magic table as a sorcerer.
- 19:13SPEAKER_00: I would say a lot of the paths are really good.
- 19:16SPEAKER_00: You can kind of pick any of the paths and kind of adapt it based on your character to fit what type of character you're going with.
- 19:25SPEAKER_00: And it is just gonna buff whatever you're doing and make it even better.
- 19:29SPEAKER_01: I I think if anything, it adds something back to our pros list.
- 19:32SPEAKER_01: Is it is like, you know, if you if you've set yourself down a path while you're creating this character with like a specific background, there's uh unlike a lot of other classes, there's almost guaranteed to be a path that fits what you want to do with this character and whatever background you've already set out.
- 19:50SPEAKER_02: And we're just about out of time tonight.
- 19:51SPEAKER_02: So what are your God, I can't get this one out.
- 19:56SPEAKER_02: That's what she's saying.
- 20:01SPEAKER_02: And we're about five years in tonight, so it's about time to wrap it up.
- 20:04SPEAKER_02: What are your guys' final thoughts on the barbarian?
- 20:07SPEAKER_00: This is a very approachable class for a brand new character.
- 20:10SPEAKER_00: I mean, any first-level characters that are jumping into a brand new party, this is one that you're probably gonna have early on.
- 20:18SPEAKER_00: Uh, everybody should dabble in the barbarian once in a while.
- 20:22SPEAKER_00: Uh, just because it's a kind of a a palette cleanser to not have to worry about all these magic classes, um, the complexity of some of the other classes, this is a good one that where you can just jump in and roll with it.
- 20:34SPEAKER_01: I agree a hundred percent with everything Brett just said, and and I think going back to what we were just talking about, it lends itself well to like if you whatever background you've chosen for your character that it there's paths for you to take, and it's a very versatile and adaptable character for you to run.
