- 0:12Hello, friends. It's shown.
- 0:14Here it is Tuesday. It is the Fourth of July.
- 0:18At sounds like Independence, Day to me in some part of the world,
- 0:23but closer to home, we celebrate just a cracker all Tuesday.
- 0:29And today we continue reading through the Book of Ruth and the
- 0:35moabites, you know, who are the moabites.
- 0:37If you remember, all the way back to Genesis when Ham and his
- 0:42nephew lot headed off into a new land lat and Abraham separated,
- 0:48and when lot settled, and he turned himself into a nation
- 0:53through many generations growing that nation became the moabites.
- 0:57So these are like the long-lost cousins of the Israelites.
- 1:01This is not a warring Nation with a lot of hatred and
- 1:04bitterness between them. This is this is the extended
- 1:08family so they have returned. Back to Israel now that the
- 1:13drought is gone Naomi and Ruth and let us pick up the story to
- 1:18see what happens next. As we read, together, Ruth,
- 1:21chapter 2, Now there was a wealthy and
- 1:34influential man in Bethlehem named Boaz who is a relative of
- 1:38Naomi's, husband elimelech, find a Ruth the moabite said to
- 1:43Naomi, let me go out into the Harvest fields to pick up the
- 1:47stalks of grain left behind by anyone who was kind enough to
- 1:51let me do it Naomi replied. All right, my daughter go ahead.
- 1:56So Ruth went out to gather drain behind the Harvesters and as it
- 2:01happened, And she found herself working in a field that belonged
- 2:04to Boaz the relative of her father-in-law elimelech.
- 2:09While she was there Bo has arrived from Bethlehem and
- 2:12greeted the Harvesters, the Lord be with you.
- 2:15He said the Lord blessed you, the Harvesters replied then bow
- 2:19has asked his Foreman. Who is that young woman over
- 2:23there? Who does she belong to and the
- 2:26foreman replied? She is the young woman from Moab
- 2:30who came back with Naomi. She asked me this morning if she
- 2:33could gather ground behind the Harvesters, she has been hard at
- 2:37work ever since except for a few.
- 2:39It's rest in the shelter, Boaz went over and said to Ruth.
- 2:43Listen, my daughter stay right here with us.
- 2:47When you gathered round, don't go to any other fields, stay
- 2:51right behind the young. Women working in my field, see
- 2:54which part of the field, they are harvesting and then follow
- 2:57them. I have worn the young men.
- 2:59Not to treat you roughly. And when you were thirsty, help
- 3:03yourself to the water. They have drawn from the well,
- 3:06Ruth fell at his feet and thanked him.
- 3:09Warmly, what have I done to deserve such kindness?
- 3:13She asked, I'm only a foreigner. Yes, I know Bo has replied but I
- 3:19also know about everything you have done for your
- 3:21mother-in-law, since the death of your husband, I have heard
- 3:25how you left your father and mother and your own land to live
- 3:29here. Among complete strangers, may
- 3:32the Lord, the god of Israel under whose wings, you have come
- 3:36to take refuge reward you. Ali for what you have done.
- 3:41I hope I continue to please you sir, she replied, you have
- 3:46comforted Me by speaking. So kindly to me, even though I
- 3:50am not one of your workers. At mealtime Boaz called to her.
- 3:55Come over here and help yourself to some food.
- 3:58You can dip your bread in the sour wine.
- 4:01So she ate with his Harvesters and boas gave her some roasted
- 4:06grain to eat. She ate all she wanted, and
- 4:08still had some left over. When Ruth went back to work
- 4:13again, Boaz ordered his young men letter gathered grain,
- 4:17right? Among the sheaves without
- 4:19stopping her and pull out some heads of barley, From the
- 4:22bundles and drop them on purpose for her.
- 4:25Let her pick them up and don't give her a hard time.
- 4:29So Ruth gathered barley there all day and when she beat out
- 4:33the grain that evening it filled an entire basket.
- 4:37She carried it back into town and showed it to her
- 4:39mother-in-law Ruth also gave her the roasted grain that was left
- 4:43over from her meal. Where did you gather all this
- 4:47grain today? Naomi asked, where did you work?
- 4:51May the Lord bless the one who helped you.
- 4:55So Ruth told her mother-in-law about the man and who's filled.
- 4:58She Worked. She said, the man I worked with
- 5:02today is named Boaz. May, the Lord bless him, Naomi
- 5:08told her daughter-in-law. He is showing kindness to us as
- 5:12well as your dead husband. That man is one of our closest
- 5:16relatives, one of our family. Redeemers, then Ruth said,
- 5:22what's more Boaz even told me to come back and stay with his
- 5:26Harvest until the entire Harvest is completed.
- 5:29Added good Naomi. Exclaimed do as he said my
- 5:33daughter. Stay with his young women, right
- 5:37through the whole Harvest, you might be harassed in other
- 5:40fields, but you'll be safe with him.
- 5:44So, Ruth worked alongside the women in boaz's fields and
- 5:48gathered grain with them until the end of The Barley Harvest,
- 5:51then she continued working with them through the wheat harvest
- 5:55in early summer. And all the, while she lived
- 5:58with her mother in law, Lord, thank you that you are a
- 6:12kind God that you come to us with compassion and mercy and
- 6:19kindness in your heart that you lavish upon us, thank you for
- 6:24the sunshine. For the full bellies, for the
- 6:28friendships for the beautiful families, for peace for.
- 6:34So many blessings in our lives that you give us and thank you
- 6:39that you shape the hearts of those around us.
- 6:43And that you give us the potential for love and for
- 6:46kindness grow that potential in us.
- 6:50Just as we hear of these loving kind acts in this story of Ruth,
- 6:56I pray that you would shape us and mold us to be like you so
- 7:01that we too can be faithful and kind and merciful, you are a
- 7:08good God and we love you and it's in the name of Jesus.
- 7:11We pray these things. Amen.
