- 0:00Speaker 1: All right, I want to take you guys to another
- 0:02Speaker 1: coaching decision, and really this comes from the front office,
- 0:05Speaker 1: and we see these moves made all the time, mostly
- 0:08Speaker 1: in the off season. So the Pittsburgh Pirates have a
- 0:11Speaker 1: banger offense so far to start the year. That's been
- 0:14Speaker 1: the problem for them for years. That suddenly has changed.
- 0:17Speaker 1: The problem has become the bullpen, very very clearly the bullpen.
- 0:21Speaker 1: So here's Jason Schettler, who covers the team, said, from
- 0:25Speaker 1: what we heard over the off season, the Pirates staff,
- 0:27Speaker 1: particularly Schemes, wanted a different pitching coach, which is why
- 0:31Speaker 1: they moved on from Oscar Marin and brought in Bill Murphy.
- 0:35Speaker 1: He said, as easy as it is to point the
- 0:37Speaker 1: finger at Murphy as well as Kelly, the pitchers want
- 0:39Speaker 1: to change. So there's dialogue going on Adam on social
- 0:41Speaker 1: media about the change in pitching coach. We've talked a
- 0:44Speaker 1: lot about Jeremy Hepner getting let go by the Mets
- 0:47Speaker 1: and how that's how to ripple effect in some ways,
- 0:50Speaker 1: which you can comment on, I'm sure, but your thoughts
- 0:52Speaker 1: on how this is going down where the Pirates are
- 0:55Speaker 1: suddenly looking up going oh wait, we were good on
- 0:57Speaker 1: pitching now, that's a problem for us. And the hitting
- 1:01Speaker 1: is doing what it should, but they're not going to
- 1:03Speaker 1: make the playoffs if they don't fix what we're seeing
- 1:05Speaker 1: from their bullpen.
- 1:07Speaker 2: Yeah, and also Mitch Keller, you know, sliding sliding a
- 1:10Speaker 2: little bit right now as well. It's almost never the
- 1:13Speaker 2: pitching coach's fault. You know, they don't throw the ball.
- 1:16Speaker 2: They're not out there, they're they're the modern pitching coaches
- 1:20Speaker 2: is a collaborator, you know. It's somebody that you talk to,
- 1:23Speaker 2: you kind of work through problems together with, but they're
- 1:26Speaker 2: not out there dictating what you're doing, you know, And
- 1:30Speaker 2: I think it's it's easy to point the finger at
- 1:32Speaker 2: somebody like that. At the end of the day, it's
- 1:33Speaker 2: it's the guys. Some of the guys aren't getting the
- 1:35Speaker 2: job done. Maybe they didn't build in enough depth in
- 1:38Speaker 2: that bullpen. And it's a long season. I know, they
- 1:41Speaker 2: attacked this offseason really strong to go after that offense,
- 1:45Speaker 2: and and you know, to a large degree, they've really
- 1:47Speaker 2: they've really done that. They've proven that with the way
- 1:50Speaker 2: they've swung the bat this year. But it takes three units,
- 1:52Speaker 2: you know, the starting staff, the lineup as well as
- 1:55Speaker 2: that bullpen to make the postseason in Major League Baseball,
- 1:58Speaker 2: and you know, maybe they didn't have quite enough resources
- 2:01Speaker 2: to make the whole thing really well rounded. And that's
- 2:04Speaker 2: kind of rearing its head right now. But I can't
- 2:05Speaker 2: point the finger at any coaching change.
- 2:09Speaker 3: Yeah, I think that's the hardest part.
- 2:11Speaker 4: You know, somebody has to be to blame, and why
- 2:14Speaker 4: can't it just be you know, we're not playing well
- 2:18Speaker 4: or you know, I don't agree with some of the decisions,
- 2:21Speaker 4: But ultimately, it's not his job. It's my job to
- 2:24Speaker 4: get to you know, to do what I do best.
- 2:26Speaker 4: So part of the game, part of the business. And
- 2:29Speaker 4: a lot of times they blame the coaching staff because
- 2:32Speaker 4: the players are getting paid a lot of money and
- 2:34Speaker 4: it's not fair to them. But you know, we've seen
- 2:37Speaker 4: some cases where coaches are a little out of hand, so.
- 2:41Speaker 3: That give and take.
- 2:42Speaker 4: But you know, pull, if we're going back to Paul
- 2:45Speaker 4: Skins and he's saying something, man, you got to listen,
- 2:47Speaker 4: because he's he's the face of that franchise too.
- 2:51Speaker 1: Have you guys, you don't need to name names obviously,
- 2:53Speaker 1: unless you want. Have you guys ever seen you know,
- 2:56Speaker 1: players get involved with trying to make coaching decisions. What
- 3:01Speaker 1: I mean is, have you seen a player complain about
- 3:03Speaker 1: a coach enough that they really don't want them there?
- 3:04Speaker 5: I'm sure you guys have.
- 3:05Speaker 1: So if you can take any context there, right, I'm
- 3:08Speaker 1: every player I'm sure has had, you know, some little
- 3:11Speaker 1: disagreement or beef with somebody else in the organization.
- 3:15Speaker 5: So Adam, I'll start with you.
- 3:17Speaker 1: Any situations, again, you can generalize where you've seen that
- 3:21Speaker 1: become a problem for a team where you've got some
- 3:23Speaker 1: guys saying, hey, I don't want to work with this guy.
- 3:25Speaker 5: I think we should move on.
- 3:26Speaker 1: It holds more weight maybe if it's a star player
- 3:28Speaker 1: and he's locked in for a long term contract.
- 3:32Speaker 2: Yeah, well, it definitely holds for a way to feel
- 3:34Speaker 2: the star player and you know they have a lot
- 3:37Speaker 2: invested in you. I've never been a part of any
- 3:38Speaker 2: of those conversations, Like, I've never gone to ownership and said,
- 3:41Speaker 2: you know, we got to get rid of this guy.
- 3:43Speaker 2: You know it's me or him or anything like that.
- 3:46Speaker 2: But I do know that that does happen. I know
- 3:47Speaker 2: that that happens. Sometimes guys will flex their power a
- 3:50Speaker 2: little bit. They're not afraid to get in there and
- 3:52Speaker 2: voice their opinion. The way I always looked at it
- 3:55Speaker 2: in my career is, you know, I might not agree
- 3:58Speaker 2: with something that you know, manager or coach is putting
- 4:02Speaker 2: into place, but you know, in the pecking order, they're
- 4:05Speaker 2: they're my boss, so I have to at least respect it.
- 4:08Speaker 2: I don't have to agree with it. I have to
- 4:10Speaker 2: at least respect it and then try to, you know,
- 4:12Speaker 2: navigate myself accordingly. But honestly, like, I haven't agreed with
- 4:18Speaker 2: every coach I've had over the years, whether it's strategy, pitching,
- 4:22Speaker 2: or different things. But it's not always it's not always
- 4:26Speaker 2: correlated with success. Like I've had times where I was
- 4:28Speaker 2: in disagreements and then I pitched my best and I
- 4:31Speaker 2: have times where we were in lockstep and it didn't
- 4:33Speaker 2: go well. So it's not always correlated. At the end
- 4:36Speaker 2: of the day, the players are the ones with the
- 4:38Speaker 2: with the game in their hands, and that's where you
- 4:41Speaker 2: have to keep the accountability.
- 4:42Speaker 3: In my opinion, yep, accountability.
- 4:44Speaker 4: I mean have been apart some squabble, some disagreements, but
- 4:48Speaker 4: nothing of the stature of you know, we got to
- 4:51Speaker 4: get rid of this guy.
- 4:51Speaker 3: I think that's a sign of a dysfunctional team right there.
- 4:56Speaker 3: If we're being.
- 4:56Speaker 5: Honest, you never saw, though Todd.
- 4:59Speaker 1: You never saw someone else even like complain like a
- 5:02Speaker 1: teammate being like, hey, I don't like this guy. He's
- 5:04Speaker 1: trying to tell me to do this, and I disagree.
- 5:06Speaker 4: Sure, but nothing comes out of that complain All you
- 5:10Speaker 4: want Remember it's you're You're.
- 5:13Speaker 3: The one that's got to hit the ball. You're the
- 5:14Speaker 3: one that's got to pitch.
- 5:15Speaker 4: So listen to him, and if you don't agree with him,
- 5:19Speaker 4: go with what you feels best. And a lot of
- 5:21Speaker 4: guys used to do that and do well. And some
- 5:23Speaker 4: guys in the coach of becks, yeah I told you something.
- 5:25Speaker 4: The guys I oh, thanks in about and he looks
- 5:28Speaker 4: at you're like I did totally opposite, or or he did,
- 5:31Speaker 4: you know, vice versa. So listen, you're the one that
- 5:35Speaker 4: controlling your life and your baseball career. You know, if
- 5:40Speaker 4: you want to take a chance and try something different,
- 5:42Speaker 4: so well be it. But there's always a chance and
- 5:45Speaker 4: a risk that you take.
- 5:48Speaker 3: Crouch.
- 5:48Speaker 6: You know, I travel all the time, and I'm always
- 5:50Speaker 6: looking for possible tickets to go see advanced concerts MLB games.
- 5:54Speaker 6: When I do I always find Seakeek. Yeah, I'm not
- 5:57Speaker 6: traveling so pretty much. I'm looking for the game games
- 6:00Speaker 6: all in my area. I'm gonna look for an Orioles game.
- 6:03Speaker 6: I'm gonna look for the Phillies game, the Mets game,
- 6:06Speaker 6: the Yankees game. But you know what else is coming up?
- 6:08Speaker 6: The All Star Game. Sea Geeks got me. Hey, you're
- 6:12Speaker 6: gonna need them. Tickets for the All Star Game is

- 6:44Speaker 6: use it later.
- 6:45Speaker 3: Thank you, Seatkeek.
- 6:49Speaker 5: Oh, go ahead on them.
- 6:50Speaker 2: Just because it just reminds me of you know, professional
- 6:53Speaker 2: baseball is. It's interesting right because when you get signed
- 6:56Speaker 2: into pro ball. You assume that you're gonna be put
- 6:58Speaker 2: with people that are gonna, you know, give you the
- 7:01Speaker 2: special information and tell you the secret sauce, and your
- 7:04Speaker 2: career is just going to take off. But I remember
- 7:06Speaker 2: getting some advice from my travel ball coach from Brooklyn,
- 7:10Speaker 2: the great meles Zitter, and he was telling me, you know,
- 7:12Speaker 2: when you get in pro ball, you have to have
- 7:14Speaker 2: a filter. You know, you got a filter. You gotta
- 7:15Speaker 2: know what you listened to and digest and really take
- 7:18Speaker 2: to heart and what to let go in one ear
- 7:19Speaker 2: and right out the other ear. No, I wasn't very
- 7:22Speaker 2: good at that at the beginning, but he was absolutely right.
- 7:24Speaker 2: And it doesn't mean you don't listen to it and
- 7:26Speaker 2: you don't respect the information. But it's up to you
- 7:29Speaker 2: to be that filter at the end of the day.
- 7:31Speaker 2: And not all information that you get is going to
- 7:34Speaker 2: be usable or something that you should you know, actually implement.
- 7:38Speaker 1: So I'll give you one other example on the on
- 7:40Speaker 1: the hitting side of things that's happening right now as
- 7:43Speaker 1: we speak. I mentioned it once the other day and
- 7:45Speaker 1: it continues to be a theme right now. Tod Father
- 7:49Speaker 1: Caleb Durbin, who used to be in the Yankee system.
- 7:53Speaker 1: Had a pretty good year with the Brewers last year
- 7:56Speaker 1: and then gets moved over to the Red Sox. He
- 7:59Speaker 1: was not putting up numbers through May, right, and May itself,
- 8:05Speaker 1: like five forty ops in May. I think April was worse,
- 8:08Speaker 1: and the fives, and then yeah, before that, the first
- 8:11Speaker 1: few games in March was oh something. So overall he
- 8:14Speaker 1: was like in the mid to like probably five seventy
- 8:18Speaker 1: ish ops. All of a sudden here in June, and
- 8:20Speaker 1: I know it's only half a month so far, he's
- 8:22Speaker 1: got a nine eighty seven ops. He just had a
- 8:24Speaker 1: two homer game against the Rays, and he just looks
- 8:27Speaker 1: different at the plate right now. You're getting some extra
- 8:30Speaker 1: base hits going here for him, some pop, and just
- 8:32Speaker 1: some more consistency from him at the plate. He's been
- 8:36Speaker 1: going now to another spot to work with, you know,
- 8:40Speaker 1: one of those facilities. He drives to Waltham out in
- 8:44Speaker 1: New England every day. Every day before every game, he
- 8:49Speaker 1: drives out there to work with a private hitting coach.
- 8:51Speaker 1: Carlos Novaaz suggested it one of the Red Sox catchers.
- 8:55Speaker 1: And so since that he's come back, he made some
- 8:57Speaker 1: changes and he's working with them and it's working, So
- 9:01Speaker 1: you got to take that as a team like, oh, like,
- 9:05Speaker 1: I'm happy he's doing that, but damn, we couldn't figure
- 9:08Speaker 1: him out.
- 9:11Speaker 4: Listen, I've heard of a maybe I can't count in
- 9:14Speaker 4: my hand how many times I've heard.
- 9:16Speaker 3: Of guys doing that, and not every.
- 9:19Speaker 4: Day either, but yeah, as an organization, you know, if
- 9:22Speaker 4: you're one of the top guys, you're.
- 9:23Speaker 3: Like, what are we doing? Are we doing something wrong here? Like?
- 9:27Speaker 3: What is going on?
- 9:28Speaker 4: And this guy's got to go get an outside source
- 9:30Speaker 4: to help him with his swing?
- 9:32Speaker 3: And he's in the big league professional athlete. Listen.
- 9:34Speaker 4: I love that he's doing that. He's taking the ball
- 9:37Speaker 4: in his hands and in his court and going with it.
- 9:40Speaker 4: But this is it's usual. It's very unheard up to
- 9:43Speaker 4: do something like this. It's been hurt. I've heard a
- 9:45Speaker 4: couple of times. But hey, whatever works, I guess, So,
- 9:52Speaker 4: I don't know. It's a tough one to answer there.
- 9:54Speaker 4: If you're in the organization, and if you're the hitting coach,
- 9:56Speaker 4: you're like, all right, well, he's already got his work.
- 9:58Speaker 3: Done, so I ain't got to worry about it. I
- 10:00Speaker 3: guess it's somebody you don't even worry.
- 10:01Speaker 5: About yeah, I mean, Adam, you want him to do
- 10:04Speaker 5: his thing.
- 10:04Speaker 1: But at the same time, like if I'm part of
- 10:06Speaker 1: the front office, I'd be like, hey, guys, how come
- 10:08Speaker 1: we weren't able to provide him this supporter or like
- 10:10Speaker 1: what did we disagree with that? Now he's getting elsewhere
- 10:13Speaker 1: because he did tweak the swing a little, he's been
- 10:15Speaker 1: more aggressive, which I know that's kind of a simplistic
- 10:17Speaker 1: way to look at things, but it's not like he's
- 10:19Speaker 1: a different hitter the last couple of weeks too, Like
- 10:21Speaker 1: it's not like he's just you know, doing something for
- 10:24Speaker 1: good luck.
- 10:26Speaker 2: It's just so awkward. I mean, I've seen some situations
- 10:29Speaker 2: over the years. I mean I've seen a player have
- 10:32Speaker 2: his dad come in and hit with him, you know,
- 10:33Speaker 2: pregame or after the game, and that that caused a
- 10:36Speaker 2: stir at one point. And I know of a lot
- 10:39Speaker 2: of pitchers actually that get some scouting information behind the
- 10:43Speaker 2: scenes kind of quietly. But that just the fact that
- 10:47Speaker 2: this has become so public. And then also like the
- 10:50Speaker 2: hitting outfit that he went to was like very quick
- 10:52Speaker 2: to take immediate credit for it. Even in this I
- 10:56Speaker 2: think it's hilarious. Like the whole thing, you know, I mean,
- 10:59Speaker 2: I don't know. Uh, the player wanted to make some adjustments.
- 11:03Speaker 2: He sought information that could help him, which I think
- 11:06Speaker 2: he should do. But man, it is awkward. You just
- 11:08Speaker 2: hope that these that these people can get on all
- 11:10Speaker 2: on the same page with it, and that you know,
- 11:13Speaker 2: I think if I were like a Red Sox hitting coach,
- 11:16Speaker 2: it's easy to be offended in this situation. But the
- 11:19Speaker 2: age that we live in, you you kind of have
- 11:21Speaker 2: to check your ego a little bit at the door
- 11:24Speaker 2: and say, okay, for this individual hitter, am I looking
- 11:26Speaker 2: at this properly? What is this other information? How can I,
- 11:29Speaker 2: you know, best be of service here, as hard as
- 11:32Speaker 2: that might be.
- 11:34Speaker 1: How can we save this guy the drive every day
- 11:37Speaker 1: to the other facility and try and bring it home.
- 11:40Speaker 1: So it's a good one, all right. Let me take
- 11:43Speaker 1: you guys to something that just broke this week. A
- 11:46Speaker 1: new stat We're pretty pitching heavy today, of course, with
- 11:49Speaker 1: Adam making his debut here on the show. A new
- 11:52Speaker 1: metric released from the stat cast crew at Baseball Savant.
- 11:56Speaker 1: How much do pitchers miss the bat by? And is
- 11:59Speaker 1: the bat over the ball or under the ball? Many
- 12:02Speaker 1: other details within here, and I'm going to let Adam
- 12:05Speaker 1: do most of the cooking here and then Todd react
- 12:07Speaker 1: of course on the pitchers and hitters who actually played
- 12:10Speaker 1: in the sport.
- 12:10Speaker 5: But we're looking at average.
- 12:12Speaker 1: Miss distance by inches, and Mason Miller's name is no
- 12:16Speaker 1: surprise at the top. Number two is aj Bluebaugh.
- 12:20Speaker 5: And you can see here we're showing you where is
- 12:22Speaker 5: the baton relation to the baseball? Can we go back?
- 12:24Speaker 1: This is Mason Miller absorbed this for a moment, but
- 12:26Speaker 1: then I want to go back to the other list.
- 12:28Speaker 1: So blue Ball is number two, Andrew Abbott number three
- 12:32Speaker 1: on average miss distance at nine point three inches. And
- 12:35Speaker 1: then the players that are in the eights are Blake Trinin,
- 12:38Speaker 1: Justin Sterner, Fernando Cruz.
- 12:40Speaker 5: And Luke or sorry Lake.
- 12:42Speaker 1: Batcher eight through ten is Mike Burrows, Anthony Nuniez, and
- 12:46Speaker 1: Jose Soriano.
- 12:47Speaker 5: So point is Adam.
- 12:48Speaker 1: We've got some good names on here, but we've got
- 12:50Speaker 1: some other names that people probably don't know much about.
- 12:53Speaker 1: And maybe that piques the interest of a front office
- 12:55Speaker 1: to say, hey, they're getting some serious misses.
- 13:00Speaker 3: Yeah, I don't.
- 13:01Speaker 2: I don't know about the miss distance part of it yet.
- 13:04Speaker 2: To me, it's more like these are just spectacular flails,
- 13:07Speaker 2: you know, like you're getting some guys to swing at
- 13:10Speaker 2: some really really unhittable pitches. And I mean, Mason Miller
- 13:13Speaker 2: makes a lot of sense. What was so cool for
- 13:16Speaker 2: me with the metrics coming out is the early on
- 13:21Speaker 2: time late stuff and then also the like is he
- 13:23Speaker 2: swinging under it? Swinging over it? I think that information's
- 13:27Speaker 2: super interesting if you're trying to scout out a hitter
- 13:29Speaker 2: or a pitcher kind of understanding what makes them effective,
- 13:33Speaker 2: even even in terms of weak contact. I find that
- 13:36Speaker 2: that stuff to be very informative and super interesting. And
- 13:40Speaker 2: I didn't see that coming. The pure miss distance, Like
- 13:42Speaker 2: I always knew it was probably gonna be guys that
- 13:44Speaker 2: get swings in the dirt because you're not going to
- 13:46Speaker 2: have your bat rubbing up against the dirt a lot.
- 13:49Speaker 2: So Fernando Cruz splitter makes a lot of sense. Obviously,
- 13:52Speaker 2: Mason Miller gets you on that fastball, so guys are
- 13:54Speaker 2: off timing trying to hit the fastball, and he throws
- 13:57Speaker 2: them that slider. So some of them makes sense. I mean,
- 13:59Speaker 2: i'd be I'm curious to watch some of the big
- 14:01Speaker 2: misses from like a blue bar a guy that I
- 14:03Speaker 2: haven't watched a ton and kind of understand it a
- 14:05Speaker 2: little better, but I don't know a lot of cool
- 14:08Speaker 2: metrics coming out and fun to kind of figure out
- 14:10Speaker 2: what it means. My dom Bella would do anything for
- 14:17Speaker 2: a treat, and I want to give her a treat
- 14:19Speaker 2: that will take care of her long term.
- 14:21Speaker 1: And a quick message from today's sponsor, the ASPCA Pet

- 15:14Speaker 4: which is pretty cool to see, but some guys can
- 15:17Speaker 4: be sitting on a pitch and all of a sudden
- 15:19Speaker 4: they get a slider and they're missing by that much.
- 15:22Speaker 4: I would help out all of these pictures because I
- 15:26Speaker 4: swung and missed a lot, and when I did, I
- 15:29Speaker 4: look silly. It probably if it was Mason Miller versus me,
- 15:32Speaker 4: probably be twelve point five inches because if I swung
- 15:35Speaker 4: and missed and I was waiting on a fastball and
- 15:37Speaker 4: I saw a slider, I would make these guys look
- 15:40Speaker 4: absolutely better than what they are.
- 15:42Speaker 3: So I think it has a lot to play with.
- 15:45Speaker 4: You know what hitters are looking for and getting fooled
- 15:48Speaker 4: too as well.
- 15:51Speaker 1: Yeah, what Adam was bringing up is the swing timing
- 15:54Speaker 1: they have, which expresses where the bad is in relationship
- 15:57Speaker 1: to the ball at the closest point of contact in
- 15:59Speaker 1: three demn So they're looking at late on time early,
- 16:02Speaker 1: they're looking at over lined up. Under lined up is
- 16:05Speaker 1: a swing where the barrel is within plus or minus
- 16:07Speaker 1: three inches from the ball vertically, and then they're also
- 16:11Speaker 1: looking at tied up, centered and flail. So I think
- 16:19Speaker 1: that flail that you had some flails, which you know
- 16:23Speaker 1: our buddy Pitching Ninja has called swords at times as well.
- 16:28Speaker 1: So you have to when you come up with these
- 16:30Speaker 1: stats of Todd Father, you actually have to define things.
- 16:33Speaker 1: So it's fun when you're sitting there behind the scenes.
- 16:35Speaker 1: You've got smart people that noada crunch numbers. Mike petri
- 16:38Speaker 1: All has been on the show, He's part of that crew.
- 16:41Speaker 1: But then they also get to sit there and come
- 16:42Speaker 1: up with some creative or I mean baseball y terms
- 16:45Speaker 1: to be able to label everything.
- 16:48Speaker 4: Yep, yeah, and I love them swords, flail. You know,
- 16:52Speaker 4: they're making up new names for pitches, the splinker, all
- 16:55Speaker 4: that kind of good stuff. So makes baseball more interesting.
- 16:59Speaker 4: But again another state at where you know these pictures
- 17:02Speaker 4: are like, yeah, let me put that not stat on
- 17:04Speaker 4: the board too as well, so there's a stat for everything.
- 17:08Speaker 4: I'm I'm looking at a stat here. People are saying
- 17:11Speaker 4: I made at him look good. Yeah, I did make
- 17:14Speaker 4: him look good. I did that on purpose, knowing we'd
- 17:16Speaker 4: be in this situation.
- 17:17Speaker 3: Now.
- 17:19Speaker 1: That was nice of you, Yeah, the matchup between Ottobino
- 17:23Speaker 1: and Todd Father.
- 17:25Speaker 5: That's good.
- 17:26Speaker 1: That's good because you know you got to sit next
- 17:27Speaker 1: to him, maybe on a desk, and you're like, you
- 17:29Speaker 1: know what.
- 17:30Speaker 4: Yeah, I don't want him to be mad at me.
- 17:32Speaker 4: I can tell you know. I don't know if he
- 17:34Speaker 4: could have taken it if I if I wasn't one
- 17:36Speaker 4: for eleven against if I was like six for eleven.
- 17:39Speaker 4: But yeah, I just gotta I gotta think about the future.
- 17:44Speaker 5: When were those AB's too, Do you remember, like, do.
- 17:46Speaker 4: You I went one for one with like a cheap
- 17:49Speaker 4: single and then zero for ten the rest of the way.
- 17:52Speaker 5: Whoa what do you guys remember? Like what teams?
- 17:56Speaker 1: I mean, obviously there's a few scenarios, but was there
- 17:59Speaker 1: a spot where you guys probably faced each other the most?
- 18:04Speaker 2: I remember he almost hit a home run off me
- 18:06Speaker 2: at cors with the White Sox. We've talked about it before.
- 18:09Speaker 2: He thought he got it, just missed it a little bit.
- 18:11Speaker 2: And then I remember facing him a couple of times
- 18:13Speaker 2: with when he was on the Mets as well. I
- 18:15Speaker 2: remember one time when I was at the Yankees subway series,
- 18:19Speaker 2: so we crossed paths now and then and then also
- 18:22Speaker 2: even back, I'm pretty sure I faced him going back
- 18:24Speaker 2: to a K league too.
- 18:26Speaker 6: Oh, and I think he.
- 18:28Speaker 3: Got a hit off.
- 18:29Speaker 2: It doesn't count here, but I think you got a
- 18:30Speaker 2: hit off me.
- 18:31Speaker 3: Then Oh, all right, I'll tell you I did well there.
- 18:34Speaker 3: The year.
- 18:36Speaker 5: Todd was on Chatham, what were you on Harwich? Harwich? Nice?
- 18:41Speaker 1: Oh so close by too little neighbors there, like a
- 18:43Speaker 1: ten minute drive. All right, that's good stuff. Coming up next,
- 18:47Speaker 1: we've got a unique one. Mike Cassiano has been to
- 18:49Speaker 1: more games than you, and he'll tell us why. Well, Mike,
- 18:53Speaker 1: it's great to have you on here. You know, we
- 18:55Speaker 1: we don't do these interviews in yeah, of course, we
- 18:59Speaker 1: don't do these types off. But your story stands out.
- 19:01Speaker 1: So we were like, hey, we've got to get this
- 19:03Speaker 1: guy on the show. I'll let you take it for
- 19:05Speaker 1: thirty seconds to first off, just explain your backstory and
- 19:08Speaker 1: then our guys will have some questions for you.
- 19:12Speaker 7: Well, it just started kind of innocently enough, you know,
- 19:15Speaker 7: trying to be kind of like normal and do all
- 19:18Speaker 7: kinds of other things, and you know, and having dates
- 19:23Speaker 7: and this and that, and then it's just one day
- 19:25Speaker 7: she started going to Chase dam and she just kept
- 19:29Speaker 7: going because when I watch the game at home, I'd
- 19:32Speaker 7: be yelling and screaming at the TV set and we bother.
- 19:35Speaker 7: My mother she hated it, So I said, why I
- 19:38Speaker 7: should just go to baargame instead. And then I met
- 19:39Speaker 7: all of these guys to call themselves a Season one
- 19:42Speaker 7: fan club, this guy named Don Comen, Fuzzy pac Woman,
- 19:46Speaker 7: a guy we call Indian Sam can you watch them in?
- 19:48Speaker 7: And a host of others. So I just started going
- 19:51Speaker 7: more frequently and more often, and I just couldn't stop.
- 19:56Speaker 4: Let me ask you this question, this is so interest
- 20:00Speaker 4: thing to make. How many total games do you think
- 20:02Speaker 4: you've been to between all the sports?
- 20:08Speaker 7: It's seventeen thousand seven, It's almost seventeen thousand. We got
- 20:14Speaker 7: ten thousand faithball, almost four thousand hockey, over two thousand NBA,
- 20:24Speaker 7: almost five hundred NFL. I stuck in seventy soccer the.
- 20:28Speaker 3: Last like twelve years.
- 20:30Speaker 7: One cricket match and about eight and nine rugby matches,
- 20:36Speaker 7: and then maybe four hundred college basketball games or a
- 20:41Speaker 7: little over one hundred college football games, then a couple
- 20:45Speaker 7: of junior hockey games, a couple of only five only
- 20:50Speaker 7: five college baseball games.
- 20:52Speaker 1: Though support for today's episode comes from Square, and they've
- 20:55Speaker 1: got big news. During squares bi annual Releases event, they
- 20:58Speaker 1: launched a wave of innovative new tools to help up
- 21:00Speaker 1: local businesses run faster, smarter, and more profitably. Square is awesome.
- 21:04Speaker 1: Around Orlando, where AJ and I live, we go to
- 21:07Speaker 1: the farmers' markets around town. I go to the one
- 21:09Speaker 1: near Lake Iola. It's awesome. I use Square to pay
- 21:12Speaker 1: with my phone. I get the receipt right away.
- 21:14Speaker 5: It's great.
- 21:14Speaker 6: And so many businesses, not just small businesses, uses. So
- 21:17Speaker 6: many restaurants and businesses I walk into, not only in Orlando,
- 21:20Speaker 6: but all over the country have these and you just
- 21:23Speaker 6: use your credit card, pops out a receipt, emails.
- 21:26Speaker 3: It right to you.
- 21:27Speaker 6: It's so fast, it's so efficient, it's so hassle free.
- 21:29Speaker 6: It's one of the great things that you have going.
- 21:32Speaker 1: Square launched its most powerful tools yet, designed to give

- 21:52Speaker 4: So this is absolutely phenomenal. Do you keep all the
- 21:57Speaker 4: ticket stuffs that you've been to or that's your life whatever.
- 22:01Speaker 7: Unfortunately that they they no longer issue the tickets up
- 22:04Speaker 7: almost everywhere, but at home, I definitely have well over
- 22:11Speaker 7: ten thousand ticket stubs and over the place.
- 22:13Speaker 3: I don't know what to do with them anymore.
- 22:15Speaker 7: But my ten thousand game, somebody in the Mets ticket
- 22:20Speaker 7: off is it printed me a ticket for that game,
- 22:22Speaker 7: which I have in my book now, which is gonna
- 22:24Speaker 7: stay my scorebook the whole year.
- 22:27Speaker 4: Okay, you've been to thousands of baseball games, give me
- 22:30Speaker 4: one game in particular where you're like, I'll never forget
- 22:34Speaker 4: this game because it was something really great, something.
- 22:38Speaker 3: They continue to ask me that question.
- 22:40Speaker 7: But that's a tie Game six, Game seven, nineteen eighty six.
- 22:45Speaker 7: And the thing about Game six, if you're sitting there
- 22:48Speaker 7: knowing my team lost the World Series, gosh, you know's
- 22:53Speaker 7: and you know that's such a great year. But they
- 22:56Speaker 7: didn't lose two hours Nobody on baby. They won the
- 22:59Speaker 7: game and there were no doubt in my mind, and
- 23:02Speaker 7: were getting one Game seven and they did so those
- 23:04Speaker 7: two games are like a one way tie or two
- 23:08Speaker 7: way tie, anyway you want to look at it.
- 23:11Speaker 2: So, obviously this is awesome. By the way, Mike, nice
- 23:13Speaker 2: to talk to you. Obviously, you have something almost every day,
- 23:18Speaker 2: and you're going to a ton of places, a ton
- 23:20Speaker 2: of places, over and over and over again. Do you
- 23:22Speaker 2: always sit in the same places? Do you have a
- 23:24Speaker 2: similar routine like going the same way?
- 23:27Speaker 7: I try to set up there behind the plate. I
- 23:33Speaker 7: get the full view of the home field. So I
- 23:37Speaker 7: just try to sit up behind the plate everywhere I go.
- 23:41Speaker 7: There's a picture of my father and my brother just
- 23:44Speaker 7: popped up in there.
- 23:45Speaker 3: Yeah, my father passed away earlier this year. Up there,
- 23:49Speaker 3: I got you.
- 23:51Speaker 4: Yeah, Clint, let me ask you this question. Let me
- 23:54Speaker 4: ask you this big New York guy, right, you love
- 23:57Speaker 4: the New York teams?
- 23:59Speaker 3: Have you one?
- 24:01Speaker 2: Oh?
- 24:01Speaker 3: Okay, talk to me. Who's that? Oh?
- 24:05Speaker 7: They're playing the Brox somewhere up there in Rivery Road,
- 24:08Speaker 7: you know, but I got a lot of their game too,
- 24:10Speaker 7: because it's home.
- 24:12Speaker 3: Have you been to Have you been to a game?
- 24:14Speaker 3: I've played a.
- 24:17Speaker 6: Yeah?
- 24:18Speaker 3: Okay? Did I do? Well? Do you remember? I know
- 24:20Speaker 3: you got a King's memory?
- 24:23Speaker 5: Is this Todd.
- 24:24Speaker 7: Yes, I've seen you hit thirty five home runs, and
- 24:30Speaker 7: with the Match you hit eleven and twenty nineteen eleven
- 24:33Speaker 7: and twenty eighteen. In twenty seventeen, I've seen you hit
- 24:36Speaker 7: full home runs, but I don't know how many of
- 24:37Speaker 7: those were with the Yankees. But I have seen you
- 24:39Speaker 7: hit thirty five home runs. Incredible, remembered all igin, it's all, it's.
- 24:44Speaker 3: All liked in. That is, are you logging in your
- 24:47Speaker 3: brain or in the computer.
- 24:49Speaker 7: I have a friend who lists in San Andrew, California.
- 24:53Speaker 7: His name is Tyke Narry Edward type Narry. And if
- 24:57Speaker 7: you went this back, somebody said he a picture of
- 25:01Speaker 7: all my game lags from my books, and he put
- 25:04Speaker 7: it all together, and he put all the information together.
- 25:07Speaker 7: And now he's actually an Amtrak engineer, so when he
- 25:11Speaker 7: has time, he updates it every day or every two
- 25:15Speaker 7: or three days, and it's constantly updated. So he could
- 25:18Speaker 7: tell me how many Grand Slam home runs, I've seen,
- 25:20Speaker 7: how many no hitters, I've seen, how many triple plays
- 25:23Speaker 7: I've seen find the way two on assisted triple place
- 25:27Speaker 7: two hundred and sixty two unassisted assisted at triple plays,
- 25:35Speaker 7: and one of them was one sty Field that I
- 25:39Speaker 7: was against the Phillies and that was not good.
- 25:42Speaker 3: Who was your favorite? Who was your favorite player that
- 25:45Speaker 3: you got to see?
- 25:49Speaker 7: Well, in my very early days, I did get to
- 25:51Speaker 7: see with you May's and as far as the messagecern
- 25:56Speaker 7: David Ryan, so we've been one of my favorites by
- 25:59Speaker 7: my early day. I like people like Jim Hicksman, the
- 26:04Speaker 7: original Frank Thomas. In fact, Duke Niner hit my first
- 26:11Speaker 7: met home run in Polling Grounds in nineteen sixty three.
- 26:13Speaker 3: I liked him.
- 26:16Speaker 5: But uh, a lot of players I like.
- 26:18Speaker 7: You know, I don't really differentiate so much. It's just
- 26:21Speaker 7: but as far as like the favorites, I would say
- 26:23Speaker 7: definitely Willie Mays and David Rice's name those two, and
- 26:26Speaker 7: Tom Severe of course the franchise.
- 26:31Speaker 5: And I also love Vy Coust. Go ahead, Scott, tell
- 26:34Speaker 5: me about the no hitters. So you've been to thirteen
- 26:36Speaker 5: of them? So so what's that might.
- 26:41Speaker 7: Actually sixteen because there was abbreviated no hitter I was
- 26:45Speaker 7: taking away from Major League Baseball.
- 26:48Speaker 3: I also saw two in.
- 26:50Speaker 7: The minor league.
- 26:51Speaker 3: I saw a perfect game.
- 26:52Speaker 7: In the minor league je Mark Gomez when he was
- 26:54Speaker 7: with Ikron. But I saw David Wells's perfect game, David
- 26:59Speaker 7: Cohnes perfect game, and Dwight Gooden won no hitter with
- 27:02Speaker 7: the Yankees.
- 27:04Speaker 3: So it just took a while before I see him
- 27:05Speaker 3: Matt actually do it.
- 27:06Speaker 7: And you know that was controversial because the.
- 27:09Speaker 5: Umpire at their base one, you know, but there.
- 27:11Speaker 7: Was a no hitter, you know, as far as I'm concerned, because.
- 27:13Speaker 3: I don't know hits for a low.
- 27:15Speaker 7: But my first one was in nineteen eighty three with
- 27:18Speaker 7: Bob Force his second no hitter in Saint Louis against
- 27:21Speaker 7: the Montreal Expos.
- 27:24Speaker 3: Wow, pretty pretty cool.
- 27:26Speaker 4: My last two questions for you, when was the first
- 27:29Speaker 4: What was the first game you went to?
- 27:30Speaker 3: What year was that? If you could recall May.
- 27:32Speaker 7: Twenty sixth, nineteen sixty three, my dad took me to
- 27:36Speaker 7: a Double Heller a Yankee Stadium. Yankees won the first
- 27:39Speaker 7: game seven to one, Elston Howard hit my first home
- 27:42Speaker 7: run Jim Bounty game see one of the hosts uh
- 27:46Speaker 7: And the second.
- 27:47Speaker 3: Game the Stunners has won seven to six.
- 27:49Speaker 7: But I did not know I realized at that time
- 27:52Speaker 7: till a few years ago listening on the RA when
- 27:55Speaker 7: I went to the masters room doing inning break and
- 27:59Speaker 7: I hear the speaker in the men's room and Josh
- 28:02Speaker 7: Blowing and Howie Rose had a quiz and the question
- 28:06Speaker 7: was when Gil Harsts won his first game as a manager,
- 28:12Speaker 7: who was the original men.
- 28:15Speaker 3: In the lineup?
- 28:16Speaker 5: And then he set the dates.
- 28:18Speaker 7: It was May twenty sixth, nineteen sixty three, and I
- 28:21Speaker 7: knew They asked the Hobie Landris and uh, that was
- 28:25Speaker 7: Gil Hart's first was the manager, and I was there.
- 28:29Speaker 3: That's that's really unique.
- 28:31Speaker 4: My last question for you here, is there a day
- 28:34Speaker 4: or time you said I'm gonna go to my last
- 28:37Speaker 4: game and kind of maybe retire from doing.
- 28:40Speaker 3: This, or You're gonna do this for as long as
- 28:41Speaker 3: you can. All right.
- 28:44Speaker 7: I've told this to all my friends.
- 28:45Speaker 3: All right.
- 28:47Speaker 7: It says if I did, if I die in a
- 28:49Speaker 7: baseball thame bear in my hands. I died happy. Oh less,
- 28:53Speaker 7: it's a Yankee stadium. Take the beer off my hands.
- 28:57Speaker 5: Wow.
- 28:57Speaker 3: Oh there, we got it.
- 28:58Speaker 5: That is good. That's my dropline right there. That is
- 29:01Speaker 5: really fun.
- 29:02Speaker 1: Well, Mike, we really appreciate you sharing the story of
- 29:05Speaker 1: seeing some articles about you. People can follow you at
- 29:07Speaker 1: King Cougar Mike on Twitter. Thanks so much for joining
- 29:10Speaker 1: us and sharing your story and thank you for having
- 29:12Speaker 1: on all the games that you've hit. Really cool story,
- 29:15Speaker 1: thank you, thank you really good.
- 29:16Speaker 3: Thank you so much.
