- 0:08Speaker 1: Welcome to the Favorites that podcasts from the Volume podcast Network.
- 0:15Speaker 1: We're like two weeks from the actual NFL season, beginning
- 0:21Speaker 1: as promised twice a week, Simon Hunter and I have
- 0:25Speaker 1: been going through every single division in football, every team.
- 0:29Speaker 1: How have they improved since last season? What are their
- 0:33Speaker 1: Super Bowl odds? What are their conference odds? What are
- 0:35Speaker 1: their division odds? What are their season win totals. We
- 0:39Speaker 1: have very specifically waited to do the a f C
- 0:43Speaker 1: South until we had someone who actually played in the
- 0:48Speaker 1: a f C South to bring on the podcast. We're
- 0:50Speaker 1: gonna do that today. I will get to him in
- 0:52Speaker 1: a second. Simon, my bff, my companion. What's going on? Brother? Cha?
- 1:02Speaker 1: What's up, buddy? How you doing? I'm so ready. I'm
- 1:05Speaker 1: so ready for week zero. You know, we had Brett
- 1:07Speaker 1: McMurphy on the podcast on Tuesday, and I thought your
- 1:10Speaker 1: questions were amazing, and I thought the way you sort
- 1:13Speaker 1: of responded to the insider nature of what he does.
- 1:19Speaker 1: It didn't even occur to me that, you know, you
- 1:22Speaker 1: joined me for the podcast three seasons ago. We did
- 1:25Speaker 1: it with Darren that one year, and then last year
- 1:26Speaker 1: you and I did it solo and you're so good
- 1:30Speaker 1: at this already, and you're such a media professional already.
- 1:34Speaker 1: I forgot that, like you would have legit questions about
- 1:36Speaker 1: what it's like to be an insider because I'm a
- 1:38Speaker 1: jaded old media veteran who has been doing this for
- 1:42Speaker 1: so fucking long. It didn't even occur to me to
- 1:44Speaker 1: think that people might have interest in understanding how Brett
- 1:47Speaker 1: McMurphy does what he does. So I loved when you
- 1:49Speaker 1: were asking those questions. They were great, No, I was amazing,
- 1:52Speaker 1: especially the fact that he's hitting me up saying, yeah,
- 1:54Speaker 1: if you were have college information, reach out to me.
- 1:56Speaker 1: It's like you're the information I get, Brett, I'm not
- 1:59Speaker 1: going to you're not getting. So that was pretty funny.
- 2:02Speaker 1: But yeah, man, I'm I'm just so pumped, like for NFL,
- 2:06Speaker 1: especially this this time of year, like we always talked about,
- 2:08Speaker 1: this is where everyone's so happy, so excited for their team.
- 2:11Speaker 1: They're just in complete denial. And that's what I love
- 2:14Speaker 1: about doing the show with you, is like not on
- 2:17Speaker 1: the bear of bad news. But again, I told people
- 2:19Speaker 1: they won't find any other show in all of America
- 2:21Speaker 1: telling you to take the bills under And I've seen
- 2:24Speaker 1: I think. We have like three shows ourselves on the
- 2:26Speaker 1: Action Network, all three different shows. Every every show, these
- 2:29Speaker 1: people like, yeah, I take the bills. Over take the
- 2:31Speaker 1: bills to win the division. I'm telling you people, it's
- 2:35Speaker 1: never this easy. Fade the noise. This is how I
- 2:37Speaker 1: win money the NFL. Fade the noise. People are always
- 2:40Speaker 1: overthinking this ship. Uh listen, Justin Fields is the greatest
- 2:44Speaker 1: quarterback who ever lived. Uh. Chicago Bears going to the
- 2:48Speaker 1: Super Bowl? Uh behind Justin Fields by about week four.
- 2:52Speaker 1: I firmly believe it. Um, Let's bring in our very
- 2:57Speaker 1: special guest joining us today is actually a man intimately
- 3:02Speaker 1: familiar with today's subject matter because he played in the
- 3:07Speaker 1: a f C South six seasons with the Indianapolis Colts
- 3:11Speaker 1: during a terrific nine year career as an NFL defensive back,
- 3:17Speaker 1: one of Yukon's finest. He's also the co host of
- 3:22Speaker 1: The Man a Man podcast with fellow defensive back Antoine Bethea.
- 3:27Speaker 1: Welcome to the show, Darius Butler, how are you, buddy.
- 3:32Speaker 1: I'm great, man. I appreciate you guys for having me.
- 3:34Speaker 1: I love that you're coming on. I love that, by
- 3:36Speaker 1: the way, I love right now how much athletes and
- 3:41Speaker 1: former professional athletes embrace podcasts. It's it's so much fun.
- 3:47Speaker 1: I need to know when you got when you and
- 3:48Speaker 1: Antoine decided to even do this, Like why do it?
- 3:51Speaker 1: What do you what do you feel like you can bring?
- 3:53Speaker 1: What do you feel what does the feedback you get
- 3:55Speaker 1: from fans? What are you saying now that you wish
- 3:59Speaker 1: you had been able to say when you were playing?
- 4:02Speaker 1: I mean everything, honestly. You know, as a players, you
- 4:05Speaker 1: know you're and especially me, I came in through Belichick
- 4:09Speaker 1: That's where I was drafted up in New England, so
- 4:11Speaker 1: we were pretty much prepped for interviews. You knew what
- 4:14Speaker 1: questions were gonna be asked. You kind of knew what
- 4:17Speaker 1: answer was gonna be given team wide, and didn't speak
- 4:20Speaker 1: on other players and injuries or yours things of that nature.
- 4:23Speaker 1: And then you go to different teams and it's different cultures, like, oh,
- 4:26Speaker 1: you guys can actually, like you know, speak your mind here,
- 4:29Speaker 1: but it's still up to a level because you know,
- 4:31Speaker 1: it's always team first in that locker room. And then
- 4:33Speaker 1: once you get out of the locker room, and um,
- 4:35Speaker 1: I never in a million years but thought me Ori
- 4:38Speaker 1: Into would have been in the media space in any capacity.
- 4:41Speaker 1: But you know, you start going to other people's podcast
- 4:44Speaker 1: you kind of see the trends on One of the
- 4:46Speaker 1: things I did after one of resources I used the NFLS,
- 4:48Speaker 1: I went to Broadcast boot camp and kind of saw,
- 4:51Speaker 1: you know, behind the scenes of you know, being a
- 4:54Speaker 1: personal TV or personality doing the radio, doing podcasts like
- 4:58Speaker 1: you know this podcast, past podcasts kind of cool. You know,
- 5:01Speaker 1: it's more long form, it's more linear. Um, you kind
- 5:04Speaker 1: of build your community and if you're talking to somebody
- 5:07Speaker 1: for forty five minutes an hour like we do, UM,
- 5:10Speaker 1: it's just gonna be a different conversation. It's gonna be
- 5:12Speaker 1: relaxed conversation and a lot of times like a real
- 5:14Speaker 1: locker room conversation. So I think a lot of players,
- 5:17Speaker 1: UM enjoy it. On the other side, and that's one
- 5:19Speaker 1: part of the game that most players missed even more
- 5:23Speaker 1: than playing. It's kind of locker room atmosphere. You can
- 5:25Speaker 1: have just absolutely ridiculous conversations, important conversation to talk about
- 5:29Speaker 1: your family, all type of things. So it's it's cool
- 5:31Speaker 1: and we're enjoying UM. Kind of it's just the beginning
- 5:34Speaker 1: for us actually going to a year two when Bill
- 5:38Speaker 1: Belichick is laying down the law about what you can
- 5:43Speaker 1: say and what you can't say. And you're a rookie
- 5:47Speaker 1: on the Patriots. How scary is that? I mean you
- 5:52Speaker 1: kind of you kind of know, you kind of coming
- 5:54Speaker 1: in with with the idea of who he is, um
- 5:57Speaker 1: and how tight that ship is ran um. But once
- 6:01Speaker 1: he kind of thing about there is everybody is, everybody
- 6:04Speaker 1: falls in line. You know. So when you see you know,
- 6:07Speaker 1: Tom Brady and Vince will Ford and Randy Moss, Kevin Falk,
- 6:11Speaker 1: those guys going about business a certain way and having
- 6:13Speaker 1: the level of respect of you know, what's your coach
- 6:16Speaker 1: because it's a different dynamic in NFL locker room. You know,
- 6:18Speaker 1: you've got guys, you know, and they're making five ten
- 6:21Speaker 1: fifty five million dollars a year. So in a lot
- 6:24Speaker 1: of situations, you know, you're not getting rid of those
- 6:26Speaker 1: guys before that coach. So that coach has to have
- 6:28Speaker 1: that respect and buy him and um. So he didn't
- 6:31Speaker 1: have to do much or say much to the rookies especially,
- 6:35Speaker 1: you know, it's kind of you do businesses, businesses being
- 6:37Speaker 1: done and um, you know, anything that we're doing in
- 6:40Speaker 1: that building is revolving around his team first, and um,
- 6:43Speaker 1: you know, kind of player second, and everybody kind of
- 6:45Speaker 1: buys in from that from day one. It's not really
- 6:48Speaker 1: you do kind of walk around on pins and needles.
- 6:50Speaker 1: It's almost like you're in the military to an extent.
- 6:53Speaker 1: But on Sundays when you run out of the tunnel, um,
- 6:57Speaker 1: that's kind of when you realize, okay, it's all worth it.
- 6:59Speaker 1: I feel like we got a damn good chance to
- 7:02Speaker 1: winning this game because I know we out prepared. Um,
- 7:05Speaker 1: you know the other squad over there. Yeah, you honestly
- 7:08Speaker 1: remind me of just how stupid of a quote that
- 7:10Speaker 1: Lane Johnson quote was where the Eagles, where he was like, yeah,
- 7:13Speaker 1: we have fun winning super Bowls. Over here. It's like, yeah,
- 7:15Speaker 1: Bill Belichick, man, they have fun winning multiple super Bowls,
- 7:18Speaker 1: not one super Bowl. So it just when he said
- 7:20Speaker 1: that remind me of that. It's like, yeah, you suffer
- 7:22Speaker 1: a little bit. It might not be as fun certain days,
- 7:25Speaker 1: but like you know, any athlete knows there's no better
- 7:27Speaker 1: feeling than winning. It don't matter what kind of athlete,
- 7:30Speaker 1: what's for you play That feeling a winning man, it's
- 7:32Speaker 1: the high of high. So it's just funny the way
- 7:34Speaker 1: he phrased that where it's like, man, I don't care
- 7:37Speaker 1: like a coach can talk ship to me, treat me
- 7:39Speaker 1: like ship. But if he's got my back and my
- 7:41Speaker 1: teammates have my back and you win, fun, man, that's
- 7:44Speaker 1: that's the best feeling ever. It is. Winning is everything.
- 7:48Speaker 1: Winning is. It's so hard. It's so hard to do,
- 7:51Speaker 1: especially in the the NFL. Like the margin, the line between
- 7:54Speaker 1: winning and losing, it is so small and so tight,
- 7:58Speaker 1: but it is, you know, it is some even take
- 8:00Speaker 1: with that, you know, because players do. You can't get
- 8:03Speaker 1: burnt out from that. You can't get some mental fatigue
- 8:05Speaker 1: from that, um, you know, and even in practice, you
- 8:10Speaker 1: know practice, so Cam, Cam just missed five days of practice,
- 8:13Speaker 1: and in most situations that wouldn't be a big deal.
- 8:15Speaker 1: But I've seen guys benched based off the practice they
- 8:19Speaker 1: had on Wednesday. You know, they may have played ninety
- 8:21Speaker 1: percent of snaps last Sunday, and then going into this Sunday,
- 8:24Speaker 1: they may be in sweats because they had two bad
- 8:26Speaker 1: days of practice and they can't execute a certain game
- 8:28Speaker 1: plan that we're going into. And that's not happening, um
- 8:32Speaker 1: anywhere else. If you're making you know, starting money, you know,
- 8:34Speaker 1: you're out there on the field, that's a foregone conclusion.
- 8:37Speaker 1: So there are there are different uh you know stressors
- 8:40Speaker 1: in there. But um, like I said on Sunday, when
- 8:42Speaker 1: you're dragging out of the tunnel, um, for some players,
- 8:45Speaker 1: it's all worth it. And then you look back at
- 8:47Speaker 1: your legacy and you know, you get introduced somewhere you're
- 8:49Speaker 1: a two time Super Bowl champ like that opens a
- 8:51Speaker 1: lot of doors for for people. So it's more worth
- 8:55Speaker 1: it than some guys. For some guys and others. Rank
- 8:58Speaker 1: for me right now, Oh, let's do it. Rank for
- 9:01Speaker 1: me right now? The starting quarterbacks that you played with, Oh, ship,
- 9:09Speaker 1: I mean obviously Tom Brady's number one. That's easy. I
- 9:14Speaker 1: played with Cam his rookie year. I was with him
- 9:16Speaker 1: one of years rookie year, which was phenomenal by the way,
- 9:19Speaker 1: and there was a lot of question marks about, you know,
- 9:21Speaker 1: if he could be an NFL quarterback, and I think
- 9:24Speaker 1: he broke the passing record and just you know was
- 9:26Speaker 1: doing Superman things that we hadn't really seen before. Um,
- 9:30Speaker 1: so it was amazing to see. And he obviously went
- 9:32Speaker 1: on and when m VP after that Super Bowl Andrew Luck,
- 9:36Speaker 1: he took a roster that nobody had winning probably sixty.
- 9:40Speaker 1: I don't know. I wonder what I win total was
- 9:42Speaker 1: coming into that two thousand and twelve season, but I
- 9:45Speaker 1: would only leting games went to the playoffs, so I
- 9:47Speaker 1: would have to put because of that and what he
- 9:48Speaker 1: did every year those first three years, we took another
- 9:51Speaker 1: step in the playoffs. Um, so I'll go Andrew Lucky
- 9:53Speaker 1: two and then Cam Newton at three. With Andrew Luck,
- 9:56Speaker 1: it was soa He was one of those guys like
- 9:58Speaker 1: betters loved to bet them because he was never out
- 10:03Speaker 1: of the game, and he had this mentality where he
- 10:06Speaker 1: would he would throw a pick down seven with three
- 10:09Speaker 1: minutes left in the game and just come off the
- 10:12Speaker 1: field laughing like, oh, well, I made a mistake. And
- 10:15Speaker 1: if he got the ball back with twenty seconds left
- 10:18Speaker 1: like that game against the Chiefs in the playoffs where
- 10:21Speaker 1: they came back like that was ridiculous. And to me,
- 10:27Speaker 1: that was the epitome of Andrew Luck as an NFL quarterback.
- 10:32Speaker 1: That that's who he was and his you gotta have
- 10:35Speaker 1: you gotta have uh, you gotta be wired different to
- 10:38Speaker 1: be a really good quarterback. And the things that a
- 10:41Speaker 1: lot of people would probably say is that you know,
- 10:43Speaker 1: Andrew wasn't an asshole enough, you know, to not only
- 10:47Speaker 1: teammates opponents things like that. I think that kind of
- 10:49Speaker 1: you know, Brady's an asshole, Peyton was an asshole to
- 10:52Speaker 1: an exstand Aaron Rodgers to be an asshole. Even big
- 10:54Speaker 1: being like all the great ones kind of have that
- 10:56Speaker 1: little asshole to him. But Luck didn't really have that,
- 10:59Speaker 1: but everything else, you know, and like as his teammate,
- 11:03Speaker 1: like you really never felt like you were out of
- 11:05Speaker 1: the game, like we're literally down three scores I think
- 11:07Speaker 1: coming out of the second half, and he threw another
- 11:09Speaker 1: pick that game, and it was still kind of like,
- 11:11Speaker 1: all right, let's go ahead and getting stopped, well, you know,
- 11:13Speaker 1: we'll be all right. We're giving him a t y
- 11:15Speaker 1: give whoever there is another chance causing players and getting
- 11:18Speaker 1: the end zone, and um, you know, you always had
- 11:21Speaker 1: that belief. And the thing about Luck which I saw
- 11:23Speaker 1: in practice all the time because I was I would
- 11:27Speaker 1: pick him off a fair amount and he would get
- 11:29Speaker 1: me as well. But he always wanted to know why, like, hey,
- 11:32Speaker 1: you know, what did you see there? What were you thinking?
- 11:34Speaker 1: Like how did you know the jump? Why do you
- 11:35Speaker 1: play like that with t wise? There but you play
- 11:37Speaker 1: different reggiees there. He always had those questions and then
- 11:40Speaker 1: he would take that and kind of you know, taking
- 11:42Speaker 1: the meet and spit out the bones. And then that's
- 11:44Speaker 1: how he was every reset and just go out there
- 11:46Speaker 1: for another drive because he learned, he would have his
- 11:49Speaker 1: instant reaction like I whatever been banking around, running the sideline,
- 11:52Speaker 1: talk to us guys, and you go out there and
- 11:53Speaker 1: it's almost like a brand new game. And I feel
- 11:55Speaker 1: like that's the short term memory that a lot of
- 11:58Speaker 1: the great ones had. And um, he to learn and
- 12:00Speaker 1: adjust on the flower. So that was one of his
- 12:03Speaker 1: best attributes as a quarterback, his ability to learn. And
- 12:05Speaker 1: it just simon, I feel like we're going to get into, uh,
- 12:11Speaker 1: the n f C South, which has become a fascinating
- 12:14Speaker 1: conference or a fascinating division because of what's happening for
- 12:19Speaker 1: the Colts. The Colts have not found a quarterback since
- 12:22Speaker 1: Andrew Luck unexpectedly retired. Right. You had the Jacoby prict years,
- 12:26Speaker 1: you have the Philip Rivers years. Um year for that matter,
- 12:30Speaker 1: eleven and five. That's he would say, that's finding your quarterback.
- 12:33Speaker 1: You'll take eleven and five. Any year Rivers did good enough,
- 12:36Speaker 1: you know, but he's gone. He's gone. He's gone. He
- 12:39Speaker 1: was he did what you know, I kind of expected
- 12:43Speaker 1: him to do. He So now it's Carson Wentz. And
- 12:47Speaker 1: I'm going to set the scene here because Carson Wentz
- 12:52Speaker 1: going to the Colts. Their season win total when Carson
- 12:57Speaker 1: Wentz was expected to be starting the season was it
- 13:00Speaker 1: ten and a half? And Simon, you and I talked
- 13:03Speaker 1: a lot about this. That was a number that a
- 13:05Speaker 1: lot of wise guys, a lot of professional betters thought
- 13:08Speaker 1: would go over. Because of all the teams that sort
- 13:12Speaker 1: of had double digit win totals, the Chiefs, Ravens, Bucks, Packers, like,
- 13:18Speaker 1: it was the Colts that people had the most faith
- 13:20Speaker 1: would go over the ten and a half. They've since
- 13:23Speaker 1: dropped down to nine. So do you have faith that
- 13:27Speaker 1: Carson Wentz is healthy and that he's gonna be playing
- 13:30Speaker 1: Week one? And if so, do you start piling in
- 13:34Speaker 1: to the Colts at over nine? Yeah, it's actually at
- 13:37Speaker 1: eight and a half at certain books, but I believe
- 13:39Speaker 1: you're talking about Vanduel, our sponsors, so yeah, it's at
- 13:41Speaker 1: nine there. Um. Yeah, man, I'm one of those where
- 13:45Speaker 1: I like to just try to get an edge on
- 13:48Speaker 1: other people. Were like I told you, you're the same mentality.
- 13:50Speaker 1: You saw Corson Wentz have the worst year ever last year.
- 13:53Speaker 1: And what I'm betting on is this guy is switching
- 13:57Speaker 1: it up moving back to the Midwest. You know, like
- 13:59Speaker 1: a whole new scene you read which again, people that
- 14:02Speaker 1: play sports, you know how it's just so much mental.
- 14:04Speaker 1: So much that goes into what you do in your
- 14:06Speaker 1: craft is mental, because like Garrison tell us, man, these
- 14:09Speaker 1: guys are all the best of the best. The difference
- 14:12Speaker 1: between the best player in the league and the worst
- 14:13Speaker 1: player it's not that much physically, but mentally it's huge,
- 14:17Speaker 1: Like the best guys are just so much smarter than
- 14:20Speaker 1: the other guy. So when I'm looking a guy like Carson,
- 14:23Speaker 1: I saw that his best career year was under Frank
- 14:26Speaker 1: Reich as his offensive coordinator. So again I'm looking at
- 14:29Speaker 1: a guy who could have won m VP. His team
- 14:32Speaker 1: was the number one seed, went to the Super Bowl
- 14:34Speaker 1: one with a different quarterback too. Now that he's back
- 14:36Speaker 1: with that same head coach with the Colts, where again
- 14:39Speaker 1: we can debate about the Eagles talent against this Colds team.
- 14:42Speaker 1: This Colds team is unbelievably talent with it from the
- 14:45Speaker 1: defensive side and the offensive sign both the D line
- 14:47Speaker 1: and offensive line is up there. And for me, I
- 14:51Speaker 1: just love the value of this division where everyone's gonna
- 14:54Speaker 1: come and everyone's been talking about the Titans. Everyone's really
- 14:56Speaker 1: high in the Titans, but we've just seen the time
- 14:59Speaker 1: and time again cha the turnover ray in the NFL,
- 15:01Speaker 1: these same teams don't win the same division every year
- 15:03Speaker 1: and when you know, year in and out. So for me,
- 15:06Speaker 1: loving this win total so much is just because of
- 15:08Speaker 1: this division. Like I have them sweep in Houston, I
- 15:11Speaker 1: have them sweeping the Jags, So right there, there's four wins.
- 15:14Speaker 1: And I get people's concerns about Carson Wentz coming back
- 15:17Speaker 1: right now, but to me, the guy is already back
- 15:20Speaker 1: in practice two weeks together. Right. Maybe he'll be a
- 15:22Speaker 1: little sloppy against the Seahawks week one, but I just
- 15:25Speaker 1: see this thing gonna getting on a role here. So
- 15:27Speaker 1: for me, I'm I've adjusted back complete to where I was,
- 15:30Speaker 1: where I'm back all in on the Colts because I
- 15:32Speaker 1: think Carson's get the reps in right now, that offense
- 15:35Speaker 1: will get right, and that defense, you know, they're stacked.
- 15:38Speaker 1: I mean, like you can talk about a butler here
- 15:39Speaker 1: that that defense, just the linebacking courpt itself too. There,
- 15:43Speaker 1: it's just all around just a very smart, stable group.
- 15:46Speaker 1: And we saw Philip Rivers, the guy just retired and
- 15:49Speaker 1: he made this team eleven and five and took to
- 15:51Speaker 1: the playoffs. I just love the upside for this team
- 15:53Speaker 1: right now. So Darius Simon mentioned something really specific, which
- 15:58Speaker 1: was the mentality of the athlete and a guy like
- 16:01Speaker 1: Carson Wentz. We just talked about Andrew Luck who seemed
- 16:05Speaker 1: to be so strong mentally. You talk about Tom Brady,
- 16:08Speaker 1: who you know he cannot be defeated. Carson went to
- 16:12Speaker 1: a guy who seemed like his confidence waned a lot
- 16:16Speaker 1: as a quarterback. As a player, how do you sometimes
- 16:21Speaker 1: try to find that again? Uh, you know it's tough.
- 16:24Speaker 1: I done with that, you know, I got cut after
- 16:27Speaker 1: my second year in New England and UM during that time,
- 16:30Speaker 1: and like I said, because of all the things that
- 16:32Speaker 1: we're going on, has some things going off to feel
- 16:33Speaker 1: as well. And once you kind of feel like especially
- 16:36Speaker 1: like your coaches or your teammates, UM, the fans are
- 16:40Speaker 1: kind of like the last Dominanto the drop. But once
- 16:42Speaker 1: you kind of that, that all is added pressure, especially
- 16:45Speaker 1: as a quarterback. And he was in the Philadelphia market.
- 16:48Speaker 1: But you know this, you know, this is the Big
- 16:51Speaker 1: Boys League, and I know you know things are changing,
- 16:53Speaker 1: but it's it's tough physically, it's tough mentally, especially in
- 16:56Speaker 1: that position. So there, that's the biggest question mark for
- 16:59Speaker 1: me is his mental toughness. Um. And that's that's what
- 17:03Speaker 1: you never want to have that question at your quarterback position.
- 17:06Speaker 1: But he is back with Frank and this is one
- 17:08Speaker 1: of the things that I kind of saw kind of
- 17:10Speaker 1: coming down the line in Philly. But he had his
- 17:12Speaker 1: best year under Frank and that that is a big
- 17:15Speaker 1: thing as an athlete, knowing your coach likes you, knowing you,
- 17:18Speaker 1: knowing that hey care is, knowing that he believes in you.
- 17:21Speaker 1: All those things matter. You talked about him moving, you know,
- 17:24Speaker 1: he's a North Dakota kid. He went out there in Philly.
- 17:26Speaker 1: That's a completely different world. Now he's back, you know
- 17:29Speaker 1: in Indiana, things are more comfortable for him and his family.
- 17:32Speaker 1: You know, all those things matter, and it's a great
- 17:35Speaker 1: team and family atmosphere um that Chris uh and Frank
- 17:39Speaker 1: and built over there and Jim been been an owner.
- 17:42Speaker 1: So I think he'll thrive there. So I'm right there
- 17:44Speaker 1: with you. I got their win total prior at ten
- 17:46Speaker 1: and a half. Still, even though there, you know Fane,
- 17:49Speaker 1: I would say ten is a safe bet for me
- 17:51Speaker 1: as long as Carson stays healthy, which is always a
- 17:54Speaker 1: big question mark as well. He looks good right now.
- 17:57Speaker 1: Can you show up that left tackle position or at
- 17:59Speaker 1: least holding over until Fisher gets back and it's healthy. Um,
- 18:02Speaker 1: those are the biggest questions there. But on that defense
- 18:05Speaker 1: alone is gonna keep you in pretty much every game.
- 18:08Speaker 1: And I'm excited to see what quity play does off
- 18:10Speaker 1: that edge. So that's the one thing that will kind
- 18:13Speaker 1: of take that defense from a very very good defense
- 18:16Speaker 1: to an elite defense. If you can have a guy
- 18:19Speaker 1: that can just change the math off the edge up there. Um,
- 18:22Speaker 1: you know that that reachs terror, especially on his own
- 18:24Speaker 1: style defense, where everything is, hey, we'll give up the
- 18:27Speaker 1: short complete, We're gonna rally and kind of force you
- 18:29Speaker 1: to make long drives or turn the ball over. If
- 18:32Speaker 1: you can show up that defensive front um software and
- 18:35Speaker 1: nights get to a Super Bowl a couple of years
- 18:36Speaker 1: like that. So that's the recipe for success down there, Indy.
- 18:39Speaker 1: That's what we talked about at the time, it's all
- 18:41Speaker 1: about defense, Like when paying one at all, he had
- 18:43Speaker 1: d White free and Bobby Sanders like, you need to
- 18:45Speaker 1: have these studs on the other side. Yeah, exactly. I
- 18:49Speaker 1: mean that's the kind of thing that that I feel
- 18:51Speaker 1: like they have all the pieces. All that's missing is
- 18:53Speaker 1: that paid men in that quarterback. So between the values
- 18:57Speaker 1: there to be better on Carson wants to bounds back
- 19:00Speaker 1: up a big. The Colts are at thirty five to
- 19:05Speaker 1: one to win the Super Bowl, eighteen to one to
- 19:09Speaker 1: win the conference, plus one fifty to win the division,
- 19:15Speaker 1: and their season win total is nine um. It's everything
- 19:19Speaker 1: that we've talked about Simon in terms of overvaluing Tennessee
- 19:24Speaker 1: and the juxtaposition for Indianapolis having dropped a little bit
- 19:28Speaker 1: and Tennessee now all of a sudden being the odds
- 19:31Speaker 1: on favorite in that division and being one of the
- 19:34Speaker 1: healthier favorites to win the conference, and they got Ryan Tannehill.
- 19:39Speaker 1: Darius for you, Arthur Smith, the offensive coordinator, he leaves.
- 19:44Speaker 1: We have put a lot of faith in the idea
- 19:46Speaker 1: that Arthur Smith did a ton for Ryan Tannehill. When
- 19:50Speaker 1: you look at a coach an offensive corner like that,
- 19:52Speaker 1: leaving again, we're talking about the mental aspect of the
- 19:54Speaker 1: game and impacting the quarterback. How much do you think
- 19:58Speaker 1: it hurts a guy like Ryan Tannehill to lose a
- 20:01Speaker 1: guy who has turned into a Pro Bowl quarterback. You know,
- 20:05Speaker 1: I don't think it hurts that much when you got
- 20:07Speaker 1: twenty two behind you and then you bring in Julio Jones, like,
- 20:11Speaker 1: you know, whatever, you whatever feelings because as a coach,
- 20:13Speaker 1: I mean as a player, you know, you expect your
- 20:16Speaker 1: good coaches to move on at some point and get
- 20:18Speaker 1: better job. That's just a part of the business. And
- 20:21Speaker 1: he's you know, he's been with Gays, He's he's had
- 20:23Speaker 1: his experience there, and he's experienced enough now I believe
- 20:26Speaker 1: as a quarterback um to make his own adjustments because, um,
- 20:30Speaker 1: what a lot of people forget is Tannehill was a
- 20:32Speaker 1: couple of years You're moved fro playing wide receiver before
- 20:34Speaker 1: getting drafted in the first round, and uh, you know,
- 20:37Speaker 1: he I think he's adjusted and improved well year by year,
- 20:40Speaker 1: and so I'm sure he will still used a lot
- 20:42Speaker 1: of things that he learned from Arthur Smith. But um,
- 20:45Speaker 1: coming as a defender coming into a game and as
- 20:48Speaker 1: a defensive back It really sucks because I know prior
- 20:51Speaker 1: to number one is still stop twenty two and now
- 20:53Speaker 1: you gotta deal with these two months on the outside
- 20:55Speaker 1: of A. J. Brown and Julio Jones. So, um, that's
- 20:59Speaker 1: a scary sight to see you on that offensive side
- 21:01Speaker 1: of the ball if they can all stay healthy. But um,
- 21:04Speaker 1: I mean if I was in offensive coordinator, this would
- 21:06Speaker 1: be the team that I would want to coordinate for
- 21:08Speaker 1: because you know, especially late in the season, you know
- 21:11Speaker 1: it's still a big man, a big physical man's game
- 21:14Speaker 1: at the end of the day. And you got Julio Jones,
- 21:16Speaker 1: A J. Brown and Derek Henry leaning off the bus. Um.
- 21:20Speaker 1: I liked that on offense. And then we'll see what
- 21:22Speaker 1: Bud Dupree is coming off his injury and obviously being
- 21:25Speaker 1: the guy now at the past rusher position, and you
- 21:28Speaker 1: went out and drafted Um Caleb in the first round,
- 21:31Speaker 1: who you know, a lot of people wouldn't expect him
- 21:33Speaker 1: to be there without the injury, and now you wouldn't
- 21:35Speaker 1: got Jack Rabbit Jenkins on the other side. So they
- 21:38Speaker 1: made some improvements on both sides of the ball. So
- 21:40Speaker 1: I'm excited to see We're not too excited being uh,
- 21:43Speaker 1: you know a coach fan, but um, Derek, what's there?
- 21:45Speaker 1: What's their winning total at uh nine? I mean that's
- 21:51Speaker 1: I feel like both of those are those are gimmes
- 21:54Speaker 1: right now. I mean I'm not an expert, I'm a
- 21:56Speaker 1: football guy. That's those that sounds pretty good to me.
- 21:59Speaker 1: Seventeen games. Let me ask you this, who was the
- 22:02Speaker 1: Derrick Henry running back when you were playing? If you
- 22:07Speaker 1: were five yards off the line of scrimmage, he had
- 22:10Speaker 1: a full head of steam and there was a hole
- 22:12Speaker 1: and you were the only thing that could stop. I mean,
- 22:17Speaker 1: you know, you don't You don't see Derek Henry. You
- 22:19Speaker 1: don't you know that's that's a mutant um at that position.
- 22:22Speaker 1: Man Lynch, Marshawn Lynch was a bas remember him, you
- 22:27Speaker 1: playing against him? I can't even see it in my head, man,
- 22:30Speaker 1: that that was how coming downhill at Marshawn Lynch. I mean, honestly,
- 22:35Speaker 1: playing against Marshawn and guys like him, it's it's like
- 22:39Speaker 1: you don't want to hit it, like you hate hitting him.
- 22:41Speaker 1: But he makes a game fun like it's almost like
- 22:43Speaker 1: playing in the backyard, like playing you feel like you're
- 22:45Speaker 1: playing a kid's game because it's so a lot of
- 22:47Speaker 1: things that he did was unconventional and his balance, his
- 22:51Speaker 1: strength was crazy. But um you know I wasn't. I
- 22:55Speaker 1: would always go into lay. I'm going for a kneecap
- 22:58Speaker 1: on those guys that the guys that I worried about
- 23:01Speaker 1: was in my air like a shady McCoy um Arian Foster.
- 23:06Speaker 1: A lot of people slept on him. Levian Bell behind
- 23:08Speaker 1: that Pittsburgh online, which once again you had to worry about.
- 23:13Speaker 1: Let me he was patient. They would find that was
- 23:15Speaker 1: a great online, by the way, and then you also
- 23:17Speaker 1: had account for eighty four and outside, which made things
- 23:19Speaker 1: easier on some Sundays on. So you're gonna be in
- 23:23Speaker 1: that position a lot playing against the Titans this year.
- 23:26Speaker 1: How much do you feel it? Very specifically during a
- 23:31Speaker 1: game at the point of contact, because I know, let
- 23:35Speaker 1: let me give a frame of reference that only I
- 23:36Speaker 1: can give and Simon will appreciate this. The other day,
- 23:41Speaker 1: I'm opening the door, the door hits my shin in
- 23:45Speaker 1: a weird way. I'm like, funck that hurt. And then
- 23:49Speaker 1: I immediately thought to myself the number of times a
- 23:53Speaker 1: defensive back or an offensive tackle or a running back
- 23:57Speaker 1: gets a helmet or a foot or an l bow
- 24:00Speaker 1: to the shin in a game, it's extraordinarily cleep, and
- 24:05Speaker 1: yet everyone just gets up and runs around like the
- 24:07Speaker 1: even the smallest moment of impact in football, the things
- 24:12Speaker 1: that cause people to keel over in pain on a
- 24:14Speaker 1: day to day basis, like a stub toe of things
- 24:16Speaker 1: like that. But how much during the game are you
- 24:18Speaker 1: actually even feeling that? Honestly, not a lot. You know,
- 24:22Speaker 1: when it's cold, you know your extremities, your fingers, your
- 24:25Speaker 1: toes um, and hitting a guy like Derek everyone it's
- 24:29Speaker 1: cold outside sucks hitting anything following on the ground. But
- 24:33Speaker 1: outside of that, man, honestly, it's so it's so much
- 24:35Speaker 1: adrenaline pumping three veins, um sometimes some other things, you know,
- 24:40Speaker 1: toward all some whatever you take to get game ready,
- 24:43Speaker 1: and um, adrenaline more than anything though, Honestly, when you're
- 24:46Speaker 1: playing and then you're focused on so much, you're hearing
- 24:49Speaker 1: so much, you're seeing so much. As soon as you
- 24:51Speaker 1: hit somebody, as long as you're obviously not concussing anything
- 24:53Speaker 1: like that, um, you know you're up and you're almost
- 24:57Speaker 1: you're thinking about the next player already. It's like, damn, okay,
- 24:59Speaker 1: y'all get that in the first down, is it? You know,
- 25:02Speaker 1: third and three? Is it? When you're already thinking in processing? Okay,
- 25:05Speaker 1: what's coming on? Is nickel about the running the game
- 25:07Speaker 1: and my stubbing out, Like what's going on? So so
- 25:09Speaker 1: many thoughts going to your mind that honestly, you don't
- 25:12Speaker 1: really start to feel those bumps and bruises from the
- 25:15Speaker 1: game to like Tuesday morning, Monday night. Uh, you know,
- 25:19Speaker 1: unless it's something you know that's really bad, But you don't.
- 25:22Speaker 1: You don't. You're not thinking about that, um, you know
- 25:24Speaker 1: at all, unless you're probably you know, you're late thirties,
- 25:28Speaker 1: um out there playing you're dealing with some significant injuries,
- 25:31Speaker 1: but you know a normal game, you're not. No, we
- 25:34Speaker 1: gotta we gotta keep you pushing. We've got other things coming.
- 25:37Speaker 1: I mean, what kind of dummy would play this game
- 25:39Speaker 1: into their late thirties or early forties. That's just crazy. Um,
- 25:45Speaker 1: I do want to talk about so like let me
- 25:46Speaker 1: let me reset here. So we like the Colds over
- 25:50Speaker 1: nine a lot, simon fair to say, we like the
- 25:54Speaker 1: Colts at plus one fifty to win the division. Yeah,
- 25:57Speaker 1: and let me explain to people, Uh, Darius made a
- 26:00Speaker 1: classic mistake here about and he said, he said that
- 26:03Speaker 1: over was ninety said, that's that's pretty good. I would
- 26:05Speaker 1: definitely take that over. That's him and every other person
- 26:09Speaker 1: and all of America walk into the sports books and
- 26:13Speaker 1: they go Tennessee nine and eight. That's easy. This team's
- 26:16Speaker 1: got Julio, they got a J. Brown, they got Derrick
- 26:18Speaker 1: Henry Tannehill. You know he improved off last year. I'm
- 26:22Speaker 1: telling you people, this is how the sports books win.
- 26:24Speaker 1: This is how they get you these little traps. Man,
- 26:26Speaker 1: that's what I'm trying to get people with the Bills.
- 26:28Speaker 1: Of course, the Bills are in won more than eleven games.
- 26:31Speaker 1: That's what the sports books want you to think. People.
- 26:33Speaker 1: So Titans, the Titans, I don't know what the number is.
- 26:37Speaker 1: By guarantee, it's gonna be all the money is on
- 26:40Speaker 1: the over. I'm pretty sure. I've been in a five
- 26:42Speaker 1: sports books and I bet this under. Every time they
- 26:44Speaker 1: go are you sure, and I go, yeah, I fucking
- 26:47Speaker 1: know what I'm doing. Okay, this is my money here.
- 26:49Speaker 1: But it's one of these where I get white people
- 26:52Speaker 1: love this Titans team. But the bookmakers give you little
- 26:56Speaker 1: they give you a little hidden tricks how to notice
- 26:58Speaker 1: that they're kind of sucking can be in here? And
- 27:01Speaker 1: why is this only minus one tend to win this division? Chad,
- 27:04Speaker 1: isn't Tennessee have way less question marks? In the Colts,
- 27:07Speaker 1: They're far better than the Jaguars. I mean, the Texans
- 27:10Speaker 1: aren't even the same conversation as the Tennessee Titans. So
- 27:13Speaker 1: these are all these little things. Where as a pro
- 27:15Speaker 1: I look at it. Go Okay, the sports books are
- 27:17Speaker 1: laying traps here because we can. We can go over
- 27:19Speaker 1: the history man teams do not repeat as divisional winners
- 27:23Speaker 1: and in the FC right now, okay, let's talk about teams.
- 27:26Speaker 1: I won the division last year, the Bills won the
- 27:27Speaker 1: division last year, the Chiefs won their division last year,
- 27:30Speaker 1: the Titans won their division last year, and then we
- 27:33Speaker 1: had Pittsburgh win their division. Everyone's out on Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh
- 27:36Speaker 1: is pretty much dead. People are done with Pittsburgh. I
- 27:39Speaker 1: think the same thing is happening with Tennessee that people
- 27:42Speaker 1: are just thinking, Okay, it's just gonna be like last year.
- 27:45Speaker 1: Tennessee is gonna do really well again. But I think
- 27:48Speaker 1: I think not enough people are talking about how so
- 27:50Speaker 1: many things went right for this Tennessee Titan team last year.
- 27:54Speaker 1: Derrick Henry is healthy entire year. He did not miss
- 27:56Speaker 1: a beat last year. He was honestly the best player
- 27:58Speaker 1: to meet in football last year because I don't even
- 28:00Speaker 1: know if he did, but I think you're in for
- 28:02Speaker 1: two thousand yards and a passing league like this man three.
- 28:06Speaker 1: So that's my job as a pro year is I
- 28:08Speaker 1: have to be that negative guy. But I hit you
- 28:11Speaker 1: with the truth where it's like this ship don't work
- 28:13Speaker 1: that way in sports, man, It's really hard to win
- 28:16Speaker 1: back to back years. That's why we all respect the
- 28:18Speaker 1: hell out of the Patriots. So for me, just like
- 28:20Speaker 1: in the optics, everything points to an undertotal for this
- 28:24Speaker 1: tendency Titans team. So please, people do not bet this
- 28:26Speaker 1: over nine nine at seven and ten from Tennessee. I
- 28:32Speaker 1: can't see it. I know it's hard, man, This is
- 28:36Speaker 1: for me. This Yeah, it's hard for me to see that.
- 28:40Speaker 1: I mean, you know, the coaches or the Titans, you're
- 28:42Speaker 1: gonna win that division. Both teams played the Jags in
- 28:46Speaker 1: the Texas twice, which you know they're gonna split with
- 28:50Speaker 1: one of those teams. That's just how it works, um.
- 28:53Speaker 1: But man, it's that's tough for me to see. I
- 28:55Speaker 1: can't see that one. But that's the beauty of this, right,
- 28:58Speaker 1: It's like, it's also about where do you find the value.
- 29:01Speaker 1: If the bookmakers are pricing the Titans at minus one ten,
- 29:05Speaker 1: minus one fifteen to win the division and everyone is
- 29:08Speaker 1: feeling like the Colts, who two months ago had a
- 29:11Speaker 1: season win total of ten and a half, Like, all
- 29:14Speaker 1: of a sudden, you're getting a plus one fifty and
- 29:16Speaker 1: you're getting the same roster that when it was priced
- 29:18Speaker 1: to ten and a half. You take the Colts. I mean,
- 29:21Speaker 1: this is about finding value. So that's where the value is.
- 29:24Speaker 1: The only Paul is there for me, even as a
- 29:27Speaker 1: Colts fan, is I got more question marks around a
- 29:30Speaker 1: quarterback position. That's the position you don't want question marks
- 29:34Speaker 1: about around. So that that that that will be the
- 29:38Speaker 1: only thing that gives me more apologies, Like, Okay, we
- 29:40Speaker 1: expect cards. I expect Carson Wents to be better. Um mentally,
- 29:44Speaker 1: I think more of anything he struggled last year. It
- 29:46Speaker 1: was just he wasn't confident in what was going on
- 29:49Speaker 1: around him. That will be much better, But I don't know.
- 29:52Speaker 1: He still got to answer that Tannehill. He's been building,
- 29:55Speaker 1: he's been building his momentum and building, Dary Henry is
- 29:58Speaker 1: gonna have some more pressure taking all Julio Jones out there.
- 30:01Speaker 1: Coaches and players are still still fear Julio generals. I
- 30:04Speaker 1: don't know if you guys realized that or not, but
- 30:06Speaker 1: he's still that guy. Um, so you know, we'll see.
- 30:10Speaker 1: Letna be interesting, all right. Well, now Darius Butler believes
- 30:12Speaker 1: that Simon Hunter doesn't know what he's talking about. No, no, no,
- 30:15Speaker 1: no no. Now he is convinced himself that the Titans
- 30:19Speaker 1: are the right side, and then the coaches aren't gonna
- 30:21Speaker 1: win nine games. That's how I'm seeing it. I'm just
- 30:24Speaker 1: trying to playing the public never wins man. That's that's
- 30:27Speaker 1: how books, books make their money. Vegas was built on losers,
- 30:30Speaker 1: and that's just like it's just classic traps man. That's
- 30:33Speaker 1: all I know is this, Darius Butler made millions as
- 30:37Speaker 1: an NFL player, and he just basically bet you, Simon
- 30:41Speaker 1: all of that on the Titans winning more than nine games.
- 30:44Speaker 1: That's that's how that's how I hate the Titans. They're winning,
- 30:51Speaker 1: they're winning, they're winning more than nine games. The Jags
- 30:54Speaker 1: are interesting because they're gonna start Trevor Lawrence and they've
- 30:56Speaker 1: got a coach who's never coached in the NFL, and
- 30:59Speaker 1: there are reports it's out of Jacksonville that make it
- 31:02Speaker 1: feel like urban Meyer is already in over his head. Darius,
- 31:07Speaker 1: as a former player, is a guy who keeps his
- 31:09Speaker 1: pulse on the finger, his finger on the post of
- 31:11Speaker 1: the league. What are you hearing out of Jacksonville? What
- 31:13Speaker 1: do you see? What is your take about it? College
- 31:16Speaker 1: coach and a first number one overall pick starting the season.
- 31:22Speaker 1: I mean I had some huge I played with two
- 31:25Speaker 1: number one overall picks with new coaches Cam Newton, Ron
- 31:28Speaker 1: Rivera who obviously had experience in the league playing in
- 31:31Speaker 1: coaching before he got that job. And then Chuck Bagana
- 31:33Speaker 1: and Andrew Luck and Indy and Chuck Mgona once again
- 31:36Speaker 1: had experience, um, you know in Baltimore as as a
- 31:39Speaker 1: defensive coach. So now you've got a guy who has
- 31:41Speaker 1: no NFL experience, all college experience, and then you have
- 31:44Speaker 1: a quarterback that's coming in who's you know, highly touted,
- 31:47Speaker 1: you know, Hilly regarded, UM a lot of moving parts. Um,
- 31:52Speaker 1: I wasn't howing on the higher honestly when they brought
- 31:55Speaker 1: urban Meyer in. And he's done a lot of things
- 31:57Speaker 1: that's kind of made me looking. Yeah, I kind of
- 32:00Speaker 1: know bringing in Doyle, uh, the strength coach. Then you
- 32:04Speaker 1: draft you know, Eat Seeing in the first round, and
- 32:06Speaker 1: then you're telling me he's taking all receiver reps. Uh,
- 32:09Speaker 1: you draft the corner the top of the second, you
- 32:11Speaker 1: got them playing nickel and outside like all these things
- 32:14Speaker 1: kind of as a players like, I know, it's a
- 32:16Speaker 1: player that's a tough position and learned either one of
- 32:17Speaker 1: them let alone too. So it's a lot of things
- 32:20Speaker 1: that's kind of like already. And then I saw some
- 32:23Speaker 1: reports today that was, you know, some some players aren't
- 32:26Speaker 1: thrilled with Urban Myer on the job and he's doing
- 32:28Speaker 1: out there. I kind of saw it happen in my
- 32:30Speaker 1: days with Chip Kelly and Philly and they had all
- 32:32Speaker 1: that talent out there with Shady and Macklin and it
- 32:35Speaker 1: just didn't work out. Um. So I'm not I'm not bullish.
- 32:39Speaker 1: I'm very bearish on Urban Meyer down there in Jacksonville. Um.
- 32:44Speaker 1: And and honestly don't see it lasting more than the
- 32:47Speaker 1: two years. But I think Trevor Lawns would be good
- 32:49Speaker 1: in this league. I think it's definitely gonna take some
- 32:51Speaker 1: time because a lot of moving parts um around him.
- 32:54Speaker 1: You need some type of stability um at that quarterback
- 32:58Speaker 1: position because we had a roster wasn't terrible when uh
- 33:01Speaker 1: Indy when when when Andrew Luck came in, it was
- 33:04Speaker 1: just Peyton was hurt the year before. Just that Reggie Wayne,
- 33:07Speaker 1: you know venitary pad special teams. Uh Robert Matthews, Freney
- 33:11Speaker 1: was still there for a couple of years. You have
- 33:13Speaker 1: still antoine, but that you still have pillars in that building.
- 33:16Speaker 1: Um that knew how to win and how an organization
- 33:19Speaker 1: is supposed to be ran from the locker room out signing. Yeah,
- 33:23Speaker 1: that's why it was a nice weekend for me. I
- 33:24Speaker 1: pretty much told you how I felt about the rookie
- 33:26Speaker 1: quarterbacks last week, and then everything came to fruition. I said,
- 33:29Speaker 1: Fields need to chill out. He got a helmet to
- 33:31Speaker 1: the face. I woke kids at I said, Trevor Lawrence
- 33:35Speaker 1: went from being on the best high school to the
- 33:37Speaker 1: best college to now the worst NFL team. So it's
- 33:40Speaker 1: one of these where everything there. She said, It's so true, man,
- 33:44Speaker 1: I these college coaches just don't get it. They went
- 33:47Speaker 1: from being the main power source they controlled all these
- 33:50Speaker 1: little kids, you know, making them do whatever they want
- 33:52Speaker 1: to get into these colleges, and once they get to
- 33:54Speaker 1: the college, they control their lives. So now you've got
- 33:56Speaker 1: dudes that make more money than you, and they don't
- 33:59Speaker 1: like he just said, you might be out in a
- 34:00Speaker 1: year or two. These guys have guaranteed money, so they
- 34:02Speaker 1: ain't going anywhere. The coaches needs to get over his
- 34:04Speaker 1: ego when he comes into a situation like this, and
- 34:06Speaker 1: all the little things I've seen from Urban I have
- 34:08Speaker 1: not liked, and he dare just named a bunch of them.
- 34:10Speaker 1: I think he's made a lot of wrong moves. And
- 34:13Speaker 1: just watching this last preseason game, not that he looked lost,
- 34:16Speaker 1: but he looked like the same way Nick Saban looked,
- 34:18Speaker 1: where Nick Saban was like, fuck am I doing here?
- 34:21Speaker 1: Like like I was a god. I could get any
- 34:24Speaker 1: kid I wanted, any talent I wanted. I had the
- 34:26Speaker 1: best team and everyone I played against. So literally, the
- 34:29Speaker 1: Jags are terrible. Like they got a couple of studs
- 34:32Speaker 1: on defense, but that old line is really bad. I mean,
- 34:35Speaker 1: I like Robinson the running back a lot, the undrafted kid.
- 34:38Speaker 1: He killed it last year, but everything it looks like
- 34:41Speaker 1: with Trevor Lawrence, it just looks like he's gonna have
- 34:44Speaker 1: a really rough first year. So we talked last week
- 34:46Speaker 1: about that, and it's funny. A guy I said, I
- 34:49Speaker 1: like Zach Wilson. He's gone now from plus one thousand
- 34:52Speaker 1: Rookie of the Year to plus seven fifty. People are
- 34:54Speaker 1: really based on a lot of their betting right now
- 34:56Speaker 1: on what's happening in the preseason. Right told you, I'm
- 34:58Speaker 1: just looking at footwork and how they deliver the ball,
- 35:01Speaker 1: what kind of decisions they're making, because rookies are gonna
- 35:03Speaker 1: do stupid ship they're gonna throw picks, they're gonna get
- 35:06Speaker 1: take dumb hits and dump sacks. I'm not really worried
- 35:08Speaker 1: about that. Like Trevor Lawrence. He had a couple of
- 35:10Speaker 1: those plays last game. My my big sin serve for
- 35:13Speaker 1: Trevor Lawrence is just the fact that what he has
- 35:15Speaker 1: around him, I I just don't trust the coaching. I
- 35:17Speaker 1: don't trust a position they're putting him in. So I'm
- 35:19Speaker 1: with Darius. I am just so off of this team
- 35:22Speaker 1: right now. And it's one of the few ones where
- 35:24Speaker 1: I had high hopes coming in because it was just
- 35:26Speaker 1: a fun storyline and everyone wants to, you know, the
- 35:29Speaker 1: Jags They've been going through it for it feels like
- 35:31Speaker 1: twenty years, where they're good for one year, then they're
- 35:33Speaker 1: just terrible again for the next ten years. But man,
- 35:36Speaker 1: I just do not like what I'm seeing right now
- 35:38Speaker 1: from the Jaguars. Former m m A champion Tyron Woodley

- 37:00Speaker 1: get back to it. I forgot to even mention the
- 37:04Speaker 1: t boat experiment, which you know, a lot of people
- 37:06Speaker 1: laughed at. Defferent I was excited about that. I thought
- 37:09Speaker 1: it was smart from a business point of view. And
- 37:11Speaker 1: Urban is coming from media, so he knows how the
- 37:15Speaker 1: media works. And uh, but just just to kind of
- 37:17Speaker 1: go back on it, like even how how how Urban
- 37:20Speaker 1: he's a great football coach as far as X and
- 37:22Speaker 1: o's and and building winners, but the other things outside
- 37:26Speaker 1: of that, like how he even left the previous programs
- 37:29Speaker 1: and the things that went on off the field, like
- 37:31Speaker 1: all those things matter, and like like I talked about
- 37:34Speaker 1: earlier with Belichick, like those players have to have some
- 37:37Speaker 1: buy in, like some legitimate buying, especially on a pro level.
- 37:41Speaker 1: You don't really have a choice in college, Like there's
- 37:43Speaker 1: so much power in control that that coach has. You
- 37:45Speaker 1: don't have a choice. And when you get to the pros,
- 37:49Speaker 1: it's different people, different pulling different levels and um, so
- 37:52Speaker 1: it's some different things that's going on. I think he'll struggle,
- 37:55Speaker 1: but um, you know, I want to see Trevor Lawrence succeed.
- 37:57Speaker 1: He's been the golden boy to golden child from Bay One.
- 38:00Speaker 1: I feel like he's a good kid. But it's it's
- 38:02Speaker 1: so much of it depends on what's going on around them.
- 38:05Speaker 1: So I don't like to overreact too much in the preseason,
- 38:09Speaker 1: but it's just looking ugly right now. Well, how long
- 38:14Speaker 1: do NFL coaches get our NFL players give coaches new
- 38:19Speaker 1: coaches before they've decided the coach has it or they don't. Um,
- 38:26Speaker 1: you know, honestly, a lot of it depends on um
- 38:30Speaker 1: how like how how are you running? How consistent are you? Right? Like?
- 38:33Speaker 1: How consistent are you? Not only it's not based on
- 38:36Speaker 1: the results, it's really based on the process. And that's
- 38:39Speaker 1: kind of you know, cliche because I talked about before,
- 38:41Speaker 1: it's such a fine line between win and losing. So
- 38:43Speaker 1: you can have a five and eleven year, but if
- 38:46Speaker 1: you know, okay, we're preparing to write where we're having
- 38:49Speaker 1: good practices. You know, guys that were hurt, you know,
- 38:51Speaker 1: they were held accountable for getting treatment or everybody's being
- 38:55Speaker 1: held to the same standard, just the strength and condition.
- 38:58Speaker 1: Are they on the same page, Like how is everything
- 39:00Speaker 1: operating in the building, How is he running that ship?
- 39:03Speaker 1: And then how is he running the ship with players?
- 39:05Speaker 1: When things happen, people aren't playing well, when we lose
- 39:09Speaker 1: a close game, we get blown out, you know, all
- 39:11Speaker 1: these different things. You kind of have to build that
- 39:14Speaker 1: equity over time and um you know that that's kind
- 39:17Speaker 1: of how it's built with the players, and then different
- 39:19Speaker 1: players it is different. You know, for some guys may
- 39:23Speaker 1: have been in New England for the first eight years
- 39:24Speaker 1: of their career and then they come there. Some guys
- 39:27Speaker 1: it's their first experience in NFL, So you kind of
- 39:29Speaker 1: have to set and keep that tone with everybody. That's
- 39:32Speaker 1: it's a tough thing to do as a coach, you know,
- 39:33Speaker 1: because you're dealing with a lot of a lot of personalities,
- 39:37Speaker 1: a lot of type a person and a lot of
- 39:39Speaker 1: you know, alpha and test so egos, and a lot
- 39:42Speaker 1: goes into massaging and managing that and uh so it's
- 39:47Speaker 1: definitely an art to it. It's more of an art
- 39:49Speaker 1: than than a science. Well, speaking of that's a great
- 39:53Speaker 1: segue to the last team, which we haven't spend too
- 39:56Speaker 1: much time on, but talk about a dumpster fire on
- 40:01Speaker 1: a train wreck that is headed for a nuclear waste facility,
- 40:06Speaker 1: the Texas. If I'm a player on the Texans right now,
- 40:10Speaker 1: how do I have faith in anything about the organization
- 40:13Speaker 1: or what the future holds for that team? I mean
- 40:18Speaker 1: it's hard to honestly just because of how like it
- 40:22Speaker 1: hasn't been rand well from the top down, and you
- 40:24Speaker 1: had guys like you know when when Andrew I'm not
- 40:27Speaker 1: on dream sorry Andre Johnson speaks out like you know
- 40:29Speaker 1: it's you know it's bad, and he spoke out a
- 40:32Speaker 1: few months back, and you've heard, you know, it's been
- 40:34Speaker 1: world documented and how they've been running thing. Uh you
- 40:37Speaker 1: know coach Culley was putting a pitiful situation. Uh, NICKI seio,
- 40:42Speaker 1: I feel like he's done the best he could with
- 40:44Speaker 1: what he was handed. Um. I don't think de Sean
- 40:47Speaker 1: Watson plays this year. Um. You do have Tyrod Taylor,
- 40:50Speaker 1: who's a good quarterback and was one of multiple starting jobs. Um,
- 40:54Speaker 1: and who can win ball games. Um, you know, you
- 40:56Speaker 1: still have some good players in the NFL UM and coaching.
- 40:59Speaker 1: I'm going to getting there. Coach your asshol players are
- 41:01Speaker 1: gonna play their ass off. But the organization has been
- 41:03Speaker 1: it's just been piss poor um from from the beginning
- 41:06Speaker 1: to and it seemed like Simon season win total in
- 41:11Speaker 1: Houston has said at four. You have been on this
- 41:14Speaker 1: under since the end of last season. Under four. Yeah,
- 41:21Speaker 1: three and fourteen, and it's pretty much everything. Derris just said,
- 41:25Speaker 1: it's like I was on this because I saw the
- 41:27Speaker 1: writing on the wall. I just looked at that roster
- 41:30Speaker 1: and I looked at their front office and I said,
- 41:31Speaker 1: they don't have a plan there. There is no plan
- 41:34Speaker 1: in this team. And I'm not heartbroken for the fans
- 41:38Speaker 1: of Houston. Okay, they had a nice little run there.
- 41:41Speaker 1: I think they won this division like three years in
- 41:42Speaker 1: a row, so they had their time. They're listening, Houston.
- 41:45Speaker 1: I would love to be hired if your guys m
- 41:47Speaker 1: there's just so much potential now because you guys are
- 41:49Speaker 1: going to suck for the next two to three years
- 41:52Speaker 1: no matter what. You have no money, you have no
- 41:54Speaker 1: cap space, you have no draft capital because Bill O'Brien
- 41:57Speaker 1: traded all away, so again, I'm to shoot on them
- 42:00Speaker 1: right now. I'm I'm down here right now, chat. We're
- 42:02Speaker 1: betting them week one. They're they're playing the Jags at home,
- 42:05Speaker 1: and I believe the Jags are getting all the money,
- 42:07Speaker 1: all the bets, everything, that's all. That's like one of
- 42:10Speaker 1: these things where they're a home doll plus three week one.
- 42:13Speaker 1: I'm gonna be bet in the Houston Texas even though
- 42:14Speaker 1: I'm about to shoot on them for the next ten minutes.
- 42:16Speaker 1: So it's definitely one of these things where I have
- 42:20Speaker 1: to separate myself from being a fan and just look
- 42:21Speaker 1: at the data, and man, it is ugly. It is
- 42:25Speaker 1: crazy how bad this team is. They literally have eight
- 42:28Speaker 1: running backs, all of whom you've heard of, but most
- 42:30Speaker 1: of them are probably about twenty five to thirty years old,
- 42:34Speaker 1: which is not that big of a deal, but it
- 42:36Speaker 1: just shows that this team is a structured right where
- 42:38Speaker 1: it's like, why do you guys have nine veteran running backs?
- 42:41Speaker 1: Why don't you just draft one or two guys and
- 42:43Speaker 1: have one veteran in there show them the way. And
- 42:45Speaker 1: it's just a really weird, organized, structured team. So I'm
- 42:48Speaker 1: with there. So I love Tyrod Taylor. I just think
- 42:51Speaker 1: he's a constant pro. And it's again one of these
- 42:55Speaker 1: things were week one if I'm gonna take this shitty
- 42:57Speaker 1: ass roster, but it's Tyrod Taylor going again. It's a
- 43:00Speaker 1: rookie quarterback and a rookie head coach against the Jaguars
- 43:02Speaker 1: week one, give me the plus three chat. So it's
- 43:06Speaker 1: it's one of these where I'm taking their season win
- 43:07Speaker 1: total under. But week one people take Houston plus three.
- 43:12Speaker 1: That's such an easy, easy bet Week one. You're gonna
- 43:15Speaker 1: be sweating after week who that win total? They come
- 43:18Speaker 1: out want to know the same thing. The same thing
- 43:21Speaker 1: with Jags last year, Jags won first week and it's
- 43:26Speaker 1: a sick world, you Simon. I love this. I love
- 43:32Speaker 1: this idea. I feel like our best the first week
- 43:34Speaker 1: of the year, the five games that we ultimately decided
- 43:37Speaker 1: to choose, it's gonna be like so Jexans, it's gonna
- 43:41Speaker 1: be the Falcons, It's gonna be it's gonna be Detroit,
- 43:45Speaker 1: it's gonna be the Bears at plus seven against the Rams.
- 43:48Speaker 1: I don't know about that. I don't know if now
- 43:54Speaker 1: Aaron Donald's coming for that ass dude, I don't want
- 43:56Speaker 1: to with that. That's why they're starting Andy Dalton. I know,
- 44:04Speaker 1: by the way, thank God trust Fields weak too to
- 44:08Speaker 1: keep the future alive. Uh. All right, I think we nailed.
- 44:12Speaker 1: I think we've got everything we need for the a
- 44:14Speaker 1: f C South that Texas are gonna stink. But we're
- 44:16Speaker 1: still gonna bet On in week one. None of us
- 44:18Speaker 1: believe in Urban Meyer, but we're hopeful for Trevor Lawrence.
- 44:21Speaker 1: We all love the Colts over nine plus one fifty
- 44:23Speaker 1: to win the division. Uh. And Darius has bet Simon
- 44:27Speaker 1: seven and a half million dollars that the Titans are
- 44:30Speaker 1: gonna go over nine wins this year. So I'm excited
- 44:34Speaker 1: to see how that plays out. Uh. I do want
- 44:39Speaker 1: to thank NFL veteran current host of the Man to
- 44:43Speaker 1: Man podcast with fellow defensive back an Joine Bethea, uh
- 44:48Speaker 1: Darius Butler Yukon's finest thanks for joining us on the
