Latest / Inside the Birds: A Philadelphia Eagles Podcast / Inside The Tape With Greg Cosell: "I Think They've (Eagles) Kind Of Lost Their Identity"
Transcript
- 0:08Speaker 1: Hello, everyone, welcome to Inside the Tape on Inside the Birds,
- 0:12Speaker 1: and of course it's Inside the Tape. We got our
- 0:15Speaker 1: man Greg Cosell with us to break down the tape
- 0:17Speaker 1: of the Eagles game. I'm Jeff Mosher alongside my Inside
- 0:20Speaker 1: the Birds co host Adam Kaplan and Greg. We are
- 0:23Speaker 1: for the first time this year, not breaking down a
- 0:26Speaker 1: weird Eagles offense, but an Eagles loss. And we will
- 0:30Speaker 1: start with the offense as it's kind of cool to
- 0:34Speaker 1: start with. Had some pop pass game, it's anario and
- 0:37Speaker 1: then like this year, it quickly there. So let's just
- 0:42Speaker 1: start off. You've you've seen the offense. There are a
- 0:46Speaker 1: lot of questions people have about play calling, coordinator, quarterback,
- 0:49Speaker 1: wide receivers, rhythm, all of that. And I want to
- 0:53Speaker 1: ask you from last week when you said it's hard
- 0:55Speaker 1: to understand what the Eagles are trying to accomplish offensively.
- 0:58Speaker 1: What is your thought now after watching the team?
- 1:02Speaker 2: Well, the big picture question is I think they've kind
- 1:05Speaker 2: of lost their identity. I mean, Barkley had five carries
- 1:09Speaker 2: in the first half and he had one carry in
- 1:12Speaker 2: the second half in a game in which they were
- 1:14Speaker 2: winning through three quarters. So I think look They've obviously
- 1:19Speaker 2: not run the ball as well this year as they
- 1:21Speaker 2: did a year ago, no question, we understand that. But
- 1:25Speaker 2: this is a team that's built to play that way,
- 1:28Speaker 2: you know, and that's the way they have to play
- 1:31Speaker 2: to be successful. So they're going to have to find
- 1:35Speaker 2: a way to get back to what they need to be.
- 1:40Speaker 2: The bottom line is, and I know this is so
- 1:43Speaker 2: hard for people to understand because they're Super Bowl champions,
- 1:48Speaker 2: and we automatically associate super Bowls with the quarterback being
- 1:53Speaker 2: this transcendent figure that is absolutely special in every way,
- 1:57Speaker 2: But the reality is that's not who Jalen Hurts is.
- 2:00Speaker 2: Is very good at certain things, but there are limitations
- 2:04Speaker 2: that I don't want to say force, that's not the
- 2:07Speaker 2: right word, that dictate that you have to play a
- 2:10Speaker 2: given way and you can be successful, very successful playing
- 2:14Speaker 2: that given way, but you can't really with any consistency
- 2:18Speaker 2: step outside of playing that given way.
- 2:22Speaker 3: And so their identity would be back to and Hurts
- 2:25Speaker 3: as a part of that, as we all know, and
- 2:28Speaker 3: they've got to be a team that could run the
- 2:30Speaker 3: ball effectively and without them able to do it this
- 2:33Speaker 3: season and now we've been through five games, Yeah, I'm
- 2:38Speaker 3: kind of with you guys, particularly Greg, I don't know
- 2:41Speaker 3: what they're like, and we'll get into what the tape
- 2:44Speaker 3: looked like from structurally and what you thought of everyone's performance,
- 2:47Speaker 3: but I just don't know it. After five games and
- 2:51Speaker 3: they are four to one. Somehow where this offense could go.
- 2:54Speaker 3: Greg's they have the talent around.
- 2:55Speaker 2: Them, well, the offensive line, and again that's sort of
- 2:58Speaker 2: the elephant in the room because for the last two
- 3:01Speaker 2: three four years they were arguably the best offensive line
- 3:04Speaker 2: in football, and this year they've not been and they've
- 3:07Speaker 2: they've struggled. And now Dickerson, I don't know if he's
- 3:10Speaker 2: going to be out, you know, for any extended period
- 3:12Speaker 2: of time, but he only played twelve snaps this week.
- 3:15Speaker 2: Cam Jurgens has basically now admitted that he doesn't feel
- 3:17Speaker 2: great because of his back is still bothering them, and again,
- 3:21Speaker 2: every player wants to play. This is no knock on
- 3:23Speaker 2: Cam Jurgens. I mean, you got to give a guy
- 3:25Speaker 2: credit that this is his profession, this is his job.
- 3:28Speaker 2: But he's obviously not playing at the same level that
- 3:31Speaker 2: he did a year ago. I mean, on the one
- 3:33Speaker 2: run that Barkley had in the in the second half,
- 3:36Speaker 2: Jurgons just got driven right back into him. And you
- 3:40Speaker 2: know they're not running the ball now your point is
- 3:42Speaker 2: correct at him when they're playing well, Hurts is a
- 3:45Speaker 2: major part of the run game. That's a strength of
- 3:48Speaker 2: Jalen Hurts is he's a major part of the run
- 3:50Speaker 2: game and he dictates how defenses have to play. But
- 3:54Speaker 2: they didn't really do any of that in this given game.
- 3:57Speaker 2: And if you prevent him from scrambling, and we'll get
- 4:01Speaker 2: into the details of that, because I thought Vance Joseph
- 4:04Speaker 2: just gave a a just a professional masterpiece in how
- 4:08Speaker 2: to do certain things to keep Jalen Hurts from running
- 4:11Speaker 2: at scrambling not running scrambling. Then you know, very often
- 4:16Speaker 2: the pass game is not you know, is not there
- 4:19Speaker 2: the way you'd like it to be. You know, the
- 4:21Speaker 2: Hurts had one run in the first half and it
- 4:23Speaker 2: was a kneel down at the end of the first half,
- 4:25Speaker 2: you know, and a couple of times he tried to scramble,
- 4:27Speaker 2: he ended up just being run out of bounds behind
- 4:30Speaker 2: the line of scrimmage, which gets charged as a sack,
- 4:32Speaker 2: even though it wasn't an official sack the way we
- 4:34Speaker 2: see it, but that's the way it gets charged.
- 4:37Speaker 1: So Greg that's we made this point on the inside
- 4:40Speaker 1: the Birds pregame show for everybody didn't hear it that
- 4:43Speaker 1: not only do the Broncos have a deep and talented
- 4:45Speaker 1: pass rush, but they have a pass rush plan as
- 4:50Speaker 1: far as how to deal with a player like Jalen
- 4:53Speaker 1: Hurts and not letting him escape the pocket. What did
- 4:55Speaker 1: you witness?
- 4:57Speaker 2: Look, Vance Joseph literally decided he wanted to play man coverage. Now,
- 5:02Speaker 2: if you're going to play man coverage, that means you
- 5:04Speaker 2: have to do other things. Because in the normal way
- 5:07Speaker 2: of playing man coverage, if you're just rushing the quarterback,
- 5:10Speaker 2: you know, the way most teams would, then you're giving
- 5:12Speaker 2: lanes to the quarterback. So you have to decide, if
- 5:15Speaker 2: I'm going to play man, what else am I going
- 5:17Speaker 2: to do? So what they did is they played a
- 5:19Speaker 2: higher percentage of man coverage, but they match that with
- 5:23Speaker 2: spy and underneath the rat concepts. And what a rat
- 5:25Speaker 2: concept is for people that don't know, is where maybe
- 5:29Speaker 2: they rush three and they drop two guys out and
- 5:32Speaker 2: they're basically almost zone players. They're called rats. I got
- 5:36Speaker 2: that phrase from Peyton Manning, and you know, it's a
- 5:37Speaker 2: little more than I do. So you know, they just
- 5:40Speaker 2: kind of sit there and they have eyes on the quarterback.
- 5:43Speaker 2: So instead of just one guy, which is the spy,
- 5:45Speaker 2: which they did as well, and they did it with
- 5:47Speaker 2: a good athlete of Benito, but they would have two
- 5:50Speaker 2: guys sitting there and you know that minimizes the running
- 5:54Speaker 2: now and then when they did play man and rush four,
- 5:57Speaker 2: they clearly did it with what we call the mushroom rush.
- 6:00Speaker 2: They had a guy who just kind of didn't really rush,
- 6:03Speaker 2: but he just made sure that Jalen couldn't go forward.
- 6:07Speaker 2: You know, So they they did a number of things
- 6:10Speaker 2: while playing man coverage, which they obviously felt they wanted
- 6:14Speaker 2: to do.
- 6:16Speaker 3: Interesting, Greg, it's in fact, Chuck mcgonnald's in front of
- 6:19Speaker 3: our show, Chuck Pugonalds, w want to talk about rack
- 6:21Speaker 3: covered Jeff remember that.
- 6:22Speaker 1: Yes I do. I do, yep.
- 6:25Speaker 2: Greg.
- 6:25Speaker 3: What I found interesting about this because each week and
- 6:28Speaker 3: they're they're trying to get a rhythm and trying to
- 6:29Speaker 3: get they're trying to figure out who they are, what
- 6:31Speaker 3: they want to be right right, they come out and
- 6:33Speaker 3: Jeff matching the RPOs hey fans have been calling for
- 6:36Speaker 3: it brought it hurts from an Acri standpoint. First half
- 6:40Speaker 3: pretty good, But the tape always tells you something. Greg
- 6:44Speaker 3: as we all know, what did I tell you about
- 6:46Speaker 3: the past game? Uh?
- 6:47Speaker 2: In the first half? Yeah, I I you know, I
- 6:49Speaker 2: don't think it was. Again, people might look at the
- 6:51Speaker 2: numbers and think, oh, Jalen had one of his best
- 6:53Speaker 2: games of the year. I don't think he played very
- 6:56Speaker 2: well in this game, and I don't think he saw
- 6:58Speaker 2: things very well. You know, one of the things that
- 7:00Speaker 2: he does struggle with and again this is not the
- 7:02Speaker 2: first team to do it, but it's the nature of
- 7:05Speaker 2: games and any given you know, if you have something
- 7:07Speaker 2: you don't do well. And by the way, this is
- 7:09Speaker 2: not I don't want people to listen to this and think, oh,
- 7:12Speaker 2: you don't like Jalen Hurts. I could talk about this
- 7:14Speaker 2: with a ton of quarterbacks in the league that certain
- 7:17Speaker 2: things they don't do well, and in any given game
- 7:19Speaker 2: it could crop up depending on how the game plays out.
- 7:23Speaker 2: But one thing Jalen is not really good at and
- 7:26Speaker 2: other teams have done it, of course, is he's not
- 7:29Speaker 2: very good when the picture changes pre snap to post snap,
- 7:31Speaker 2: because he's essentially a primary read quarterback, and when it's
- 7:37Speaker 2: clean and he can just get rid of it and
- 7:39Speaker 2: play in you know, some sense of rhythm. He can
- 7:42Speaker 2: be very good. But when the picture changes, which there
- 7:45Speaker 2: was one sack I think it was the split sack
- 7:48Speaker 2: between Benito and I forget who else it was. I
- 7:50Speaker 2: think it might have laid in the first half, was
- 7:53Speaker 2: a great example of Joseph changing the picture pre snapped
- 7:57Speaker 2: to post snap. And you know, when I saw that
- 7:59Speaker 2: play live, I was I actually felt a little pride
- 8:03Speaker 2: because that was my film piece in the matchup show
- 8:07Speaker 2: for this particular game, is showing how the Broncos do
- 8:10Speaker 2: that in addition to then getting pressure on the quarterback,
- 8:13Speaker 2: so you know, this is something that they do. And
- 8:17Speaker 2: you know, hearts tends to get stuck in the pocket
- 8:19Speaker 2: and then he looks to run. Now, there are many
- 8:21Speaker 2: times that happens, guys, and he runs for twenty five yards, right,
- 8:25Speaker 2: you know, and it turns into a great play. But
- 8:29Speaker 2: in this game that didn't happen. And by the way,
- 8:33Speaker 2: I think we get used to the fact that Jalen's
- 8:36Speaker 2: just gonna make those plays every week, and he makes
- 8:38Speaker 2: them enough, by the way, that's a strength of his game.
- 8:41Speaker 2: He makes them enough that we just assume that that happens.
- 8:45Speaker 2: So when they don't happen, you know. And he didn't
- 8:48Speaker 2: really have any runs in this game, any scrambles, you know,
- 8:51Speaker 2: so they those didn't happen. Now, just to get back
- 8:54Speaker 2: to your question, Adam, I mean I noticed it right
- 8:56Speaker 2: from the second play of the game. Okay, you know
- 8:59Speaker 2: they well, they called a play and it was it
- 9:04Speaker 2: was a curl route to Brown. This was the design,
- 9:06Speaker 2: I know, the play. It demanded an anticipation throw in
- 9:10Speaker 2: his own window. Brown was open. You know, you have
- 9:13Speaker 2: to throw it just before he turns. You can't wait
- 9:16Speaker 2: till he turns around. But that's not the kind of
- 9:19Speaker 2: throw that hurt sees. He doesn't see the game that way,
- 9:23Speaker 2: you know. And you know I said to myself as
- 9:25Speaker 2: soon as I saw that, I said, oh boy, I
- 9:26Speaker 2: hope it's not one of those games. You know, he
- 9:29Speaker 2: just didn't see. He doesn't see that, do you.
- 9:32Speaker 1: I think the the way they came out with the
- 9:34Speaker 1: r p os and THEO was to create those designed reads. Yeah,
- 9:39Speaker 1: the defense that expected to play the blitz a lot
- 9:42Speaker 1: and play man.
- 9:43Speaker 2: From from the past game perspective, and r PO is
- 9:45Speaker 2: a non read. I mean, it's it's a non read.
- 9:48Speaker 2: You know, it's you know right, I mean you know
- 9:52Speaker 2: you you know well, because if you're deciding to to
- 9:56Speaker 2: not give the ball to the back, that's because you
- 10:00Speaker 2: just saw the guy move out of where you're throwing it.
- 10:02Speaker 2: So it's really a non read once you decide to
- 10:05Speaker 2: throw it.
- 10:06Speaker 1: Right. I felt like he was able to get Goddard
- 10:09Speaker 1: on a funer of them that helped them move.
- 10:10Speaker 2: Yeah, they've done that all through the years. How many
- 10:12Speaker 2: times have we seen that where he just hits got
- 10:13Speaker 2: it out in the flat like that, he turns it
- 10:15Speaker 2: up and sometimes he gains eight, sometimes he gains fifteen,
- 10:19Speaker 2: you know, I mean how many times you know, sometimes
- 10:21Speaker 2: he gains twenty five. You know, we've seen that many
- 10:24Speaker 2: many times. Now. One thing which we've talked about numerous times, guys,
- 10:28Speaker 2: and they did it on the second possession, and they
- 10:30Speaker 2: did it really really well, is they went no huddle,
- 10:33Speaker 2: and they were no huddle almost the whole possession, because
- 10:36Speaker 2: when do they normally go no huddle when they have
- 10:41Speaker 2: a good gain or a first down. So the drive
- 10:45Speaker 2: started with an eight yard pass to Brown for a
- 10:48Speaker 2: first down? Okay, didn't start with that, That's what I
- 10:52Speaker 2: guess that.
- 10:52Speaker 1: Was the class.
- 10:53Speaker 2: Yeah, and then they went no huddle pretty much. I
- 10:57Speaker 2: think the rest of the drive. I made a note
- 10:59Speaker 2: of that that they just went no huddle for seven
- 11:02Speaker 2: consecutive plays and they had a lot of success. And
- 11:06Speaker 2: we've talked about the fact that they did that a
- 11:08Speaker 2: lot last year with great success. We haven't seen this year,
- 11:13Speaker 2: and they didn't really come back to it, Jeff, and
- 11:15Speaker 2: you know, selectively here and there, but not with the
- 11:18Speaker 2: same frequency they did on that second drive.
- 11:21Speaker 1: Well, I just wonder, if they're first down, what's the
- 11:25Speaker 1: opposite of success failures in the second half.
- 11:27Speaker 2: Rented them inefficiency? Inefficiencies is probably a good word for it.
- 11:32Speaker 3: Yeah, Yeah, because one question off the no huddle, what
- 11:36Speaker 3: you've noticed with hers, because just watching it at home,
- 11:38Speaker 3: seems like he's so much more decisive when when they're
- 11:42Speaker 3: going faster, he just he gets it out.
- 11:44Speaker 2: Well, one thing that no huddle normally does not one
- 11:47Speaker 2: hundred percent. There's nothing one hundred percent in football what
- 11:50Speaker 2: it normally does because the defense doesn't really change personnel.
- 11:55Speaker 2: But even if they do, there's not a lot of
- 11:57Speaker 2: time for them to check and adjust and talk to
- 12:00Speaker 2: one another and communicate because you don't know when the
- 12:02Speaker 2: ball is going to be snapped at him. So pretty
- 12:05Speaker 2: much you feel as an offense that you're getting a
- 12:08Speaker 2: somewhat predictable defense, you know, based on film study, and
- 12:13Speaker 2: that allows your quarterback to be more decisive because in
- 12:16Speaker 2: his mind, he knows what he's getting. He's not waiting
- 12:19Speaker 2: to see what he's getting. He's not seeing a lot
- 12:22Speaker 2: of people move, so he kind of knows what he's getting.
- 12:26Speaker 2: So and again, normally in no huddle, you're not throwing
- 12:28Speaker 2: the ball forty yards down the field. Everything tends to
- 12:31Speaker 2: be quick rhythm. It's not a lot of reads. It's
- 12:34Speaker 2: get the ball out. Let's keep the chains moving, Let's
- 12:36Speaker 2: keep the tempo moving. You know, that's the whole point
- 12:38Speaker 2: of no huddle.
- 12:40Speaker 1: Greg, if you're an Eagle fan, that's sort of trying
- 12:43Speaker 1: to pick up the pieces even though they're four and one,
- 12:45Speaker 1: they're fine and look for a bright side out of this.
- 12:48Speaker 1: Is it s fair in your mind to say, well, hey,
- 12:51Speaker 1: you know what, you're not going to face a defense
- 12:54Speaker 1: like this that is as deep as it is in
- 12:56Speaker 1: the pass rush and a coordinator who's got a Patrick's
- 13:00Speaker 1: tain along with it to be able to play man
- 13:02Speaker 1: coverage on the back end. There's just and this is
- 13:04Speaker 1: why the egos win a lot of games even when
- 13:06Speaker 1: they don't look so great offensively, is because le Broncos
- 13:09Speaker 1: are pretty good and they have a good right marriage
- 13:11Speaker 1: of personnel and coordinator.
- 13:12Speaker 2: I mean, certainly they're a really good defense. To my
- 13:18Speaker 2: way of thinking, just having been around a lot of
- 13:20Speaker 2: coaches in my career, I would personally think that that
- 13:24Speaker 2: you don't want to think like that, you know, I
- 13:27Speaker 2: don't want to think. I don't want you know.
- 13:29Speaker 4: To me, I don't think the coaches meeting today is ah,
- 13:32Speaker 4: we played a really good defense, so what we we
- 13:34Speaker 4: weren't really good.
- 13:36Speaker 2: I don't think that's the way you want to think.
- 13:38Speaker 1: No, I asked that you don't know about them, But
- 13:40Speaker 1: I'm just saying.
- 13:41Speaker 4: That obviously they're playing a really good defense. But then
- 13:44Speaker 4: you have to have a plan for playing against that
- 13:46Speaker 4: defense and breaking it down. You want to you should
- 13:48Speaker 4: be going into that game thinking, you know what, we're
- 13:50Speaker 4: scoring thirty five today, not hey, we'll be lucky to
- 13:53Speaker 4: score twenty. I mean, you know, they're really good. And
- 13:56Speaker 4: maybe when the coaches are lying in bed, you know,
- 13:58Speaker 4: because they don't sleep a lot, you know, on Thisturday
- 14:00Speaker 4: nights before games.
- 14:01Speaker 2: They know in their mind that, oh, this is really
- 14:03Speaker 2: tough defense. But you don't want to be presenting that like,
- 14:06Speaker 2: oh man, this is going to be a really hard
- 14:08Speaker 2: day at the office today.
- 14:09Speaker 4: You know, you want to feel like you have a
- 14:11Speaker 4: plan that can attack and break down the you know,
- 14:14Speaker 4: the best defense in the world.
- 14:15Speaker 2: You know.
- 14:16Speaker 4: So, But you know, once we have access to the results,
- 14:20Speaker 4: can we sit here and say, yeah, that's a really
- 14:22Speaker 4: good defense and they struggled, and might they not struggle
- 14:25Speaker 4: against the giants on Thursday night?
- 14:27Speaker 2: You know? Sure? I mean they could come out Thursday night.
- 14:30Speaker 2: And by the way, sometimes when the team has a
- 14:32Speaker 2: short week because they don't practice other than classroom and
- 14:35Speaker 2: walk throughs, sometimes they just go back to Staples and
- 14:38Speaker 2: they end up playing better. And we'll discuss that when
- 14:40Speaker 2: we do our pregame show. But you know sometimes that happens.
- 14:44Speaker 1: Sure. All right, let's let's get into some film, because
- 14:47Speaker 1: I think I've got a butt a little bit of
- 14:48Speaker 1: everything to show everything that you've talked about so far. Greg.
- 14:53Speaker 1: Before we do that, we'll hear a quick word from
- 14:54Speaker 1: our great sponsors. Hey, you know that one guy in
- 14:57Speaker 1: the group chat who hit a five leg parlay a
- 14:59Speaker 1: week one and he wouldn't shut up about it for
- 15:01Speaker 1: the rest of the season. Sounds like kaplan, right, yeah, yeah,
- 15:05Speaker 1: it could be him, It could be you, and we
- 15:08Speaker 1: would all want to be you. My bookie makes it
- 15:12Speaker 1: stupid easy to get in on the action, whether it's
- 15:15Speaker 1: college ball, NFL Super Contest and Survivor pools. All the spreads,
- 15:20Speaker 1: player props and in game lines that.
- 15:23Speaker 2: You could want, all.
- 15:24Speaker 1: Under one roof. What more could you want than that?
- 15:29Speaker 1: If you're new to my Bookie, use our code the
- 15:34Speaker 1: Birds THG b IRDs the Birds. Use the code, and
- 15:39Speaker 1: any bet you choose up to five hundred dollars is
- 15:43Speaker 1: fully covered. Make your play and if it doesn't hit,
- 15:46Speaker 1: you get it right back when you opt in using
- 15:49Speaker 1: your bet back bonus token. There is no better time
- 15:53Speaker 1: to jump in right now, No better place to play
- 15:57Speaker 1: football is back.
- 15:58Speaker 2: Let's make some money with my bookie.
- 16:01Speaker 1: Sports are all about competition. Every snap, every possession, every

- 17:07Speaker 2: This is one of those where I just made a
- 17:09Speaker 2: note to myself where were hurts his eyes? Because I
- 17:11Speaker 2: don't know how he's coached on this play, but you
- 17:13Speaker 2: can run it. I remember the play now, and the
- 17:16Speaker 2: thing is is they're playing man clearly up top okay,
- 17:19Speaker 2: and no one runs with cal Katara. And again, because
- 17:25Speaker 2: I don't know how he's coached, he might have been
- 17:27Speaker 2: looking at the man coverage and seeing Okay, those two
- 17:29Speaker 2: routes are taken away. It gives a clear sense of
- 17:32Speaker 2: man and maybe at that point he decided, you know what,
- 17:35Speaker 2: I'm gonna come back to the other side of the
- 17:37Speaker 2: field and and and you know, take take the easy throw.
- 17:40Speaker 2: So I don't want to sit here and say he's wrong.
- 17:43Speaker 2: It was just me questioning, Okay, how is he coached?
- 17:46Speaker 2: And where were his eyes? Because clearly they busted the coverage.
- 17:49Speaker 2: And again, you can't go into a play thinking they're
- 17:51Speaker 2: gonna bust coverage. But but cal Katara is running, you know,
- 17:54Speaker 2: a crosser and no one even reacts to him at all. Yeah,
- 18:01Speaker 2: I'm sorry, you know. So, Yeah, it's just a matter
- 18:06Speaker 2: to me. Where were his eyes? I I don't know
- 18:09Speaker 2: the answer to that question.
- 18:11Speaker 1: Yeah, and I think this view shows you really to
- 18:16Speaker 1: illustrates your point. Here's the matter.
- 18:22Speaker 2: But I'm talking about the deeper the deeper route by
- 18:24Speaker 2: cal Katara. Nobody picks him up.
- 18:26Speaker 1: Oh, let me go back to that. Oh there he
- 18:28Speaker 1: is on the.
- 18:28Speaker 3: Left, he's he's playing, he's at the f position.
- 18:30Speaker 2: Okay, yeah, look at cal Katara, he runs the crosser,
- 18:36Speaker 2: he releases you see him where he at the thirty
- 18:47Speaker 2: nine yard line. No one, no one picked him up.
- 18:49Speaker 1: That's correct, You're right, absolutely.
- 18:51Speaker 3: Where asked why did he check it down?
- 18:53Speaker 2: Yeah? Again, because he came off, you know, he looked
- 18:56Speaker 2: to the right right away, and my guess is he
- 18:59Speaker 2: saw the man coverage and figured, okay, those two guys
- 19:02Speaker 2: are not really although in the past, very often if
- 19:05Speaker 2: he had man coverage with Round running the vertical route
- 19:08Speaker 2: up top and I know that's hertan, but that's irrelevant.
- 19:11Speaker 2: That's arguably one of the top three receivers in football,
- 19:14Speaker 2: and he's your guy. You know. Again, that hasn't happened
- 19:17Speaker 2: this year, so I can't I can't tell you why
- 19:20Speaker 2: on that, you know, But but I again, that's a
- 19:25Speaker 2: good I don't know how he's coached here, but I
- 19:28Speaker 2: just that was the question I asked myself.
- 19:29Speaker 1: They got.
- 19:30Speaker 3: But here's the thing, though they got, they got what
- 19:32Speaker 3: they wanted. I mean, they got a guy want eighty
- 19:35Speaker 3: one's wide open. Eighty three us too. But if eighty
- 19:38Speaker 3: one was wide open a coverage bus, that ball's got
- 19:40Speaker 3: to come out, I would think.
- 19:41Speaker 1: Yeah. But to Greg's point, Adam, at the forty right now,
- 19:44Speaker 1: aj Brown has the slightest step and this is a
- 19:47Speaker 1: ball that hurts typically.
- 19:49Speaker 2: No, I mean I I got the deep ball that
- 19:53Speaker 2: he threw to Donson that was ruled out of bounds.
- 19:55Speaker 2: That was one of the best deep ball throws I
- 19:57Speaker 2: think I've seen all the year from any quarterback.
- 19:59Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, so this one, he had a couple options
- 20:02Speaker 1: and obviously Barkley on the dump off.
- 20:05Speaker 2: Yeah. So that's the question. Sometimes I ask myself with
- 20:08Speaker 2: Jalen and and I don't have an answer. And it's
- 20:11Speaker 2: not a knock on jail, and I just asked myself,
- 20:13Speaker 2: where were his eyes? You know, I just that's what
- 20:15Speaker 2: because I don't know, I don't know how he's coached.
- 20:18Speaker 1: I also wonder too, if if he wanted Granson, is
- 20:21Speaker 1: now the time to pull a trigger While the two
- 20:23Speaker 1: linebackers are going in the opposite direction.
- 20:26Speaker 2: Granson's not ready yet. See, he's waiting to cross. He's
- 20:29Speaker 2: waiting to cross kind of right in front of Jalen.
- 20:31Speaker 2: So yeah, yeah, yeah, so I mean maybe you could
- 20:36Speaker 2: you know, again, it's a positive gain.
- 20:40Speaker 1: Now they do get the ball down into the red
- 20:42Speaker 1: zone on that on the same possession, So it's the
- 20:44Speaker 1: same possession.
- 20:45Speaker 2: Right, And this was the no huddle possession. It was
- 20:48Speaker 2: a really good drive.
- 20:49Speaker 1: Yep. So what do you see here on this play
- 20:52Speaker 1: that I believe where Dotson kind of comes open on
- 20:55Speaker 1: a on a curl here at the top of the screen.
- 21:00Speaker 2: Yeah, let's see the play again and look just so
- 21:02Speaker 2: I can remember it in the detail that I want to. Oh, yeah,
- 21:12Speaker 2: this was this was a double glance to the field. Okay,
- 21:16Speaker 2: it's double glance. Everybody runs this. You're really throwing this
- 21:20Speaker 2: ball off the slot defender, not the outside defender. So
- 21:24Speaker 2: basically once because if the slot defender ends up playing
- 21:28Speaker 2: zone and delivers Smith here I think that's Devanta in
- 21:33Speaker 2: the slot, right, he ends up delivering Davanta Smith to
- 21:36Speaker 2: someone else and sits there. Then you obviously can't throw
- 21:39Speaker 2: the glance to Dotson. But you know when you look
- 21:42Speaker 2: there and you see him start keep going run inside,
- 21:47Speaker 2: which is pretty evident, you got to make that throw
- 21:50Speaker 2: right there. You got to make that throw.
- 21:52Speaker 1: Yeah, he gets the ball right around the five or
- 21:54Speaker 1: six right here, and we're talking about Dotson at the
- 21:56Speaker 1: top of the screen here. He might he certainly has
- 21:59Speaker 1: momentum to take them at least into the inside the five, right.
- 22:02Speaker 2: So I mean, if you go back to the beginning
- 22:04Speaker 2: of it, Jeff. You'll see how quick he comes off
- 22:07Speaker 2: of it, and then it just becomes he runs and
- 22:09Speaker 2: I think this was one of the plays. I don't
- 22:11Speaker 2: know if this was one of the sack plays where
- 22:12Speaker 2: he runs or if he needed a couple of yards.
- 22:15Speaker 2: But sid, Sid keep going boom, he's off now again,
- 22:21Speaker 2: I don't know why he's off right.
- 22:25Speaker 1: And by the way, I know it's just one yard,
- 22:27Speaker 1: it doesn't really matter, but could you throw the ball
- 22:29Speaker 1: out to the back of the end zone here so
- 22:30Speaker 1: you don't lose a yard on a sack? Maybe he
- 22:33Speaker 1: thought he was yeah.
- 22:34Speaker 2: I mean again, these are just things that go through
- 22:37Speaker 2: my mind. You know, maybe the coaching staff thinks, hey,
- 22:39Speaker 2: he did the right thing that you're uncertain as to
- 22:42Speaker 2: you know, and we know he's a risk averse quarterback,
- 22:44Speaker 2: and that's you know, when they're playing Eagles football, that's fine.
- 22:49Speaker 2: They don't turn it over. You know, they run it great,
- 22:52Speaker 2: their defense is great. You know, he's a risk averse quarterback.
- 22:55Speaker 2: So they may feel that, hey, that's okay, he keep
- 22:58Speaker 2: seeing the game. It does get if you don't turn
- 23:01Speaker 2: it over. But I mean, look, you could make the argument, well,
- 23:04Speaker 2: I don't you know that Obviously their offense wasn't great
- 23:08Speaker 2: in this game. I'm not sitting here saying it's great.
- 23:10Speaker 2: But you could make the argument in this game that
- 23:12Speaker 2: if their defense played the way it normally does, that
- 23:14Speaker 2: they win this game maybe seventeen ten or seventeen thirteen,
- 23:18Speaker 2: and we're having a different conversation even though the offensive
- 23:21Speaker 2: performance would have been exactly the same.
- 23:23Speaker 1: Oh, I think we can talk about that a lot.
- 23:25Speaker 1: Even last year, right, the Bales out offense and everybody's
- 23:28Speaker 1: talking about winning Eagle style and not really you know,
- 23:31Speaker 1: picking apart in the inconsistency.
- 23:33Speaker 2: I mean, one could argue this was that this game
- 23:35Speaker 2: was Eagles football until the fourth quarter, right, you know,
- 23:38Speaker 2: very much so.
- 23:39Speaker 1: And hey, you know what, when you win twenty at
- 23:40Speaker 1: twenty one, every once in a while, you're not going
- 23:42Speaker 1: to pull one.
- 23:43Speaker 2: And that's why, you know, Look, coaches, from my experience
- 23:50Speaker 2: with coaches, okay, and I've done this a long time
- 23:52Speaker 2: and talked to a lot of coaches, coaches don't necessarily
- 23:56Speaker 2: they when they talk to the media, of course they talk.
- 23:59Speaker 2: You know, if you win a game, It's like Brian
- 24:00Speaker 2: Callahan and Tennessee, Hey, he's going to talk about, Hey,
- 24:03Speaker 2: we want a game. So and so played great, everybody's good.
- 24:06Speaker 2: But that's not the way they're talking when they're meeting, right,
- 24:09Speaker 2: you know, that's just the reality. We all know that, sure,
- 24:12Speaker 2: you know, and that's we hope that the Eagles are.
- 24:16Speaker 2: You know, the offensive staff is kind of getting together
- 24:19Speaker 2: and talking this through and trying to figure out, Okay,
- 24:22Speaker 2: we got three days, you know, we need to get
- 24:24Speaker 2: our offense together here.
- 24:26Speaker 1: Right, all right, So we've got cueued up. The very
- 24:28Speaker 1: next play, after he ran out of bounds, it's going
- 24:31Speaker 1: to go to DeVante Smith in the left corner of
- 24:33Speaker 1: the end zone. It feels like the coverage was good,
- 24:36Speaker 1: but a better throw at least might have given DeVante.
- 24:39Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 24:39Speaker 2: I mean again, now you're dealing with another play that
- 24:41Speaker 2: I remember this play very well. I mean, I think
- 24:44Speaker 2: that a precise throw here is a touchdown. Now again,
- 24:48Speaker 2: is it wide open? No? But you're in the red
- 24:50Speaker 2: zone so very often it's just match up football because
- 24:53Speaker 2: they're playing man. So you're not necessarily going to get
- 24:56Speaker 2: a guy who's just running free, right, I mean, if
- 24:59Speaker 2: you see it from the end I don't know if
- 25:01Speaker 2: you have this play from the end zone sure, maybe
- 25:03Speaker 2: you just took it from the sideline because from behind
- 25:06Speaker 2: you can kind of see him behind Hurts that is
- 25:09Speaker 2: I don't know if you have that, that's okay, But
- 25:11Speaker 2: the point is it's not wide open, but he does
- 25:15Speaker 2: create a little separation and if you put the ball
- 25:18Speaker 2: right out in front of him here, you at least
- 25:19Speaker 2: have a chance.
- 25:20Speaker 1: Yeah. I mean he made two plays in that game,
- 25:23Speaker 1: one that got negated by a penalty that were amazing. Contestant,
- 25:28Speaker 1: you do that.
- 25:28Speaker 2: I mean, just think back to last year, that long
- 25:30Speaker 2: touchdown against Cincinnati with Jordan Battle right on him when
- 25:33Speaker 2: he went up and got it, you know, I mean
- 25:36Speaker 2: you know that this needed and he's got a clean
- 25:38Speaker 2: pocket here. There's no there's no issue here. Oh yeah yeah, throw.
- 25:41Speaker 1: It all right. So that was that drive ended in
- 25:45Speaker 1: a fuel goal. It was not you know, the touchdown
- 25:48Speaker 1: wasn't there. But then on their third possession, Greg, they
- 25:50Speaker 1: start to heat up a little bit.
- 25:52Speaker 2: It's just the long pass to DeVante. Yes, and as
- 25:54Speaker 2: he read this perfectly, because it's a three by one set,
- 25:57Speaker 2: DeVante's the boundary acts. So in a three one said,
- 26:00Speaker 2: what normally happens because they're not playing man, you can
- 26:03Speaker 2: kind of see that by the look right now that
- 26:05Speaker 2: it's not going to be man. Everybody's softer. Okay, it
- 26:08Speaker 2: doesn't have a man look. So if it's not if
- 26:10Speaker 2: it's not man, and it's it's a two shell coverage.
- 26:14Speaker 2: As soon as they don't change, as soon as there's
- 26:16Speaker 2: no rotation post snap, you know that the safety to
- 26:21Speaker 2: the boundary is going to peek inside because he's a poacher.
- 26:24Speaker 2: He's looking inside. So now you know you've got Devanta
- 26:28Speaker 2: Smith one oh one. So he read this perfectly. DeVante
- 26:31Speaker 2: goes vertical, he gets a step on Moss runs a
- 26:33Speaker 2: great route. You see Devanta right there, the way he
- 26:35Speaker 2: leaned inside to create separation and stack him. This was
- 26:39Speaker 2: you'll see it if you run it. Right right there
- 26:44Speaker 2: he leans and then now he stacks him. This is
- 26:47Speaker 2: just precision route running. It's beautiful. This is the way
- 26:50Speaker 2: you teach it.
- 26:50Speaker 3: It's because if you see, I think someone got pushed
- 26:53Speaker 3: back right before it.
- 26:55Speaker 2: Ye, pushed back a little bit to to hurtz.
- 26:57Speaker 1: But that's a great throw.
- 26:58Speaker 2: You can't throw any bad. Night can't hand it to
- 27:00Speaker 2: him any better.
- 27:01Speaker 1: In then, by the way, if we remember the down
- 27:03Speaker 1: in distance is third and fifteen here fifteen. Yeah, I
- 27:06Speaker 1: do wonder, I do wonder. Oh maybe it was more
- 27:09Speaker 1: than that. Yeah, I do wonder if two weeks ago
- 27:11Speaker 1: against the Rams, when they twice ran the ball up
- 27:14Speaker 1: the middle of sa kuon Barkley made the Broncos think
- 27:17Speaker 1: that they weren't going to take a shot here at
- 27:19Speaker 1: all and just maybe hand it off.
- 27:21Speaker 3: Pretty much every time Jeff on third down along they've
- 27:24Speaker 3: been they've been giving up the down, just handing it off.
- 27:26Speaker 2: This is like, right, they're actually being aggressive. Right hey,
- 27:30Speaker 2: By the way, that's the great picture, Jeff. Right now
- 27:32Speaker 2: with DeVante, you happen to stop it right at the
- 27:34Speaker 2: right spot. You can see him starting to lean to
- 27:36Speaker 2: the outside and that allows him, as we use the
- 27:39Speaker 2: term on vertical routes, to stack u at them. And
- 27:42Speaker 2: now now Moss is behind him and that's beautiful ball
- 27:46Speaker 2: and you can't do any better than that.
- 27:48Speaker 1: And of course the very next play, I believe he
- 27:51Speaker 1: puts up a beautiful ball to Aja. You reference this,
- 27:54Speaker 1: it's going to be defensive pass interference.
- 27:56Speaker 2: But you like this play, Yeah, I mean this was
- 27:58Speaker 2: on certain you know, this is one of those calls.
- 28:00Speaker 2: They want to be aggressive now, so they go slug
- 28:02Speaker 2: o Certan. Obviously he doesn't bite, you know, this is
- 28:05Speaker 2: one of those bank bank plays. But he threw to
- 28:07Speaker 2: the outside. It's back shoulder put in the right spot.
- 28:09Speaker 1: Did he communicate with him?
- 28:11Speaker 2: Do you think that I thought he did? Right there?
- 28:13Speaker 2: I thought, you know, again, I don't know their system,
- 28:16Speaker 2: but he clearly looked to him and did whatever that means.
- 28:19Speaker 2: And I think he probably did that because he saw
- 28:22Speaker 2: the single high and he absolutely knows that there's no
- 28:24Speaker 2: way the safety can be involved in this throat.
- 28:26Speaker 1: Right, and then did the little three step pump to
- 28:28Speaker 1: get the safety office a little bit and bam right right.
- 28:32Speaker 1: So then of course that sets up this.
- 28:35Speaker 2: This is beautiful because this is an unbalanced line. This
- 28:37Speaker 2: is a specific red zone play, and just so people
- 28:41Speaker 2: understand what an unbalanced line is, what they did is
- 28:43Speaker 2: they brought Lane Johnson over to the left side. He's
- 28:46Speaker 2: in between I guess Toath is in the game now.
- 28:49Speaker 2: He's in between Tath and U may Alatta and it's
- 28:54Speaker 2: Granson who's technically in the right tackle position. So they
- 28:58Speaker 2: what they did is they forced the Broncos. They probably
- 29:01Speaker 2: knew exactly what the reaction would be and what happened
- 29:04Speaker 2: here is is they got Singleton matched on Goddard and
- 29:08Speaker 2: there's a natural rub element to this play as well.
- 29:10Speaker 2: And this was pitching. I mean, it's executed. This is
- 29:14Speaker 2: just a great design, great throw. Everything about this play.
- 29:17Speaker 2: You couldn't you couldn't ask for a better Jeff.
- 29:18Speaker 3: This is something that they clearly have not put on film,
- 29:21Speaker 3: because this is not that it's tough to stop that anyway,
- 29:24Speaker 3: but this is something like, you know, you start bringing look.
- 29:27Speaker 2: At Singleton, He's like, there's two tight ends over here.
- 29:31Speaker 1: Look at them. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I used to.
- 29:34Speaker 3: They didn't do that crap in practice.
- 29:37Speaker 1: Yeah, well done there.
- 29:39Speaker 2: It's also the kind of play you don't have to
- 29:41Speaker 2: practice one hundred times, right, you know. Yeah, all right.
- 29:44Speaker 1: So later in the second half they're gonna they're struggling
- 29:47Speaker 1: a little bit and kind of came out of it.
- 29:49Speaker 1: This is the first possession of the third quarter. He's
- 29:52Speaker 1: gonna get Davante on a twenty one yarder here.
- 29:57Speaker 2: Oh yeah, this is this is just you know, they
- 29:59Speaker 2: it's two by two and Davante's in the slot to
- 30:03Speaker 2: the to the field, so there's space and he runs
- 30:07Speaker 2: a great route. He beats McMillan. Who's a good corner.
- 30:09Speaker 2: I love the tempo. Davante's such a good route runner.
- 30:12Speaker 2: I just love the tempo of his route. You know,
- 30:14Speaker 2: he didn't hurry, you know, be quick, but don't hurry,
- 30:17Speaker 2: you know John Wooden, And it's beautiful. He doesn't hurry
- 30:20Speaker 2: and boom he beat sticks him to the outside, creates
- 30:23Speaker 2: a separation, clear passing window. I mean, this is pitch
- 30:27Speaker 2: and catch. Yeah, I like to throw to be actually
- 30:30Speaker 2: had a little further, so you should have been yes,
- 30:32Speaker 2: Bill Walts probably would have said, let's do it again.
- 30:35Speaker 3: Oh yeah, gosh, those films with Bill Walsh.
- 30:39Speaker 1: Yeah, just like you said, that's the one I saw.
- 30:42Speaker 1: He goes do it again, right right?
- 30:44Speaker 3: And and Montana explained, or maybe it was he Steve
- 30:47Speaker 3: Young that No, you may think this is a great pass,
- 30:50Speaker 3: it's not. It's got right here right, you want you
- 30:53Speaker 3: got to keep going forward.
- 30:54Speaker 2: Nothing but the play design was there. Might you had
- 30:57Speaker 2: to match up, you know, Davante's so good at that,
- 30:59Speaker 2: and it was that was pitch and catch, all right.
- 31:01Speaker 1: So the very next play, why does this wheel succeed
- 31:04Speaker 1: so much? Greg to seequon Barkley.
- 31:07Speaker 2: Oh well, first of all, they're in man coverage, okay,
- 31:09Speaker 2: and you can kind of tell it's man coverage. Now
- 31:12Speaker 2: they're in no huddle now, So the one thing we
- 31:14Speaker 2: don't know is is jail and just letting everybody know
- 31:19Speaker 2: what the play is or is he changing something? And
- 31:22Speaker 2: people who say they know that for sure unless they
- 31:24Speaker 2: spoke to a coach, don't know, you know, because I
- 31:26Speaker 2: heard people say, well, he changed the play. How do
- 31:28Speaker 2: you know that they're in no huddle. He might be
- 31:30Speaker 2: just telling everybody what the play is. I don't know
- 31:33Speaker 2: the answer to that. The point is, though it's a
- 31:35Speaker 2: beautifully designed play, it's it's a great it's a great
- 31:39Speaker 2: man beater because what you have is man car And
- 31:41Speaker 2: by the way, it's what we call a one by
- 31:42Speaker 2: three set because Goddard's up top and the three wide
- 31:45Speaker 2: receivers are too trips to the field, so they have
- 31:48Speaker 2: Barkley offset to the boundary side. So because of the formation,
- 31:54Speaker 2: the linebacker in Nickel pretty much he's matched on Barkley
- 31:58Speaker 2: and it's Singleton and he's a nice player, but he's
- 32:00Speaker 2: not going to run with Barkley. This is this is
- 32:03Speaker 2: great design, and actually it's it's what they do. I
- 32:06Speaker 2: forgot they blitzed here. So Singleton is actually behind the
- 32:09Speaker 2: eight ball to start because he's coming from the other
- 32:12Speaker 2: side of the formation because Strenad blitzed. So now Singleton
- 32:16Speaker 2: is caught, but it's a stutter fade, and Singleton stopped
- 32:19Speaker 2: his feet and once he stops his feet, he's done.
- 32:22Speaker 1: Yeah. By the way, we don't sometimes we don't appreciate
- 32:24Speaker 1: Barkley enough for being able to do this in the
- 32:25Speaker 1: open field as kind of a route runner. But he
- 32:27Speaker 1: does put a nice little uh as you mentioned, the stutter.
- 32:30Speaker 2: And this is everybody runs it for people who watch
- 32:33Speaker 2: other teams, like for instance, if you watch Monday Night
- 32:36Speaker 2: Football Week one, when Aaron Jones caught a touchdown pass
- 32:39Speaker 2: from JJ McCarthy, it's the same stutter fade. It's the
- 32:42Speaker 2: same play, the same rack concept. If you can get
- 32:46Speaker 2: a back on a linebacker like this, you'll take this
- 32:48Speaker 2: every time. Yep, this is beautiful.
- 32:56Speaker 1: And that was the first play, all right, So that
- 32:58Speaker 1: was a look at you know, it's started off with
- 33:00Speaker 1: some of the things that could have been better. We
- 33:02Speaker 1: ended it with some of the things that were really
- 33:04Speaker 1: good with the Eagles offense. I did want to take
- 33:07Speaker 1: a look really quickly at some of those sacks we
- 33:10Speaker 1: were discussing, and not the ones where he ran out
- 33:13Speaker 1: of balance, but the ones that he was actually sacked.
- 33:16Speaker 1: This is the one I think you referenced earlier, Greg,
- 33:18Speaker 1: with Benito and Allen combining on a sack.
- 33:22Speaker 3: Ye.
- 33:22Speaker 2: I mean, they've got a six man front right here.
- 33:24Speaker 2: It's a loaded front to the left of the center
- 33:27Speaker 2: of Jurgens, and then they've got the two. They're in dime,
- 33:30Speaker 2: so it's probably Barren and Singleton on the ball opposite
- 33:34Speaker 2: the load. So it's a six man front. So you've
- 33:37Speaker 2: got to react to the six man front. You got
- 33:38Speaker 2: to deal with it. I mean, you can't guess who's
- 33:41Speaker 2: gonna come and who's not gonna come. You got to
- 33:42Speaker 2: be able to block six. So what do they do.
- 33:45Speaker 2: They drop out and then they rushed for I believe.
- 33:49Speaker 2: So if you want to run at Jeff, yeah, So
- 33:56Speaker 2: they're going to drop out and they're gonna play actually
- 33:59Speaker 2: cover two and the middle hole defender is actually going
- 34:02Speaker 2: to be the post safety who's going to drop down
- 34:04Speaker 2: because it's a longer yarded situation. So they play cover two.
- 34:08Speaker 2: And now you know the whole idea here is for
- 34:10Speaker 2: your quarterback to get stuck, to not feel like he
- 34:13Speaker 2: has you know, within the timing and structure and rhythm
- 34:16Speaker 2: of the play, call that he has a throw, which
- 34:18Speaker 2: is exactly what happened. This is very common in the
- 34:22Speaker 2: league now there's a ton of six seven man fronts
- 34:25Speaker 2: where people drop out. It's late coverage rotation. It's really
- 34:28Speaker 2: hard to decipher. And then you get stuck in the pocket.
- 34:32Speaker 2: And then he tries to run out of the pocket
- 34:33Speaker 2: and he gets run down by Benito and Allen yep.
- 34:37Speaker 1: And if you notice there something we talked about last week,
- 34:40Speaker 1: the way they rush the outside edge. Guys stay to
- 34:43Speaker 1: the outside of the tackles, so they give Hurts that lane.
- 34:48Speaker 2: Look now they rushed up the middle, yep.
- 34:50Speaker 1: And then the stunt up the middle right.
- 34:52Speaker 2: Yeah, and look at ninety eight John Franklin. Meyer's probably
- 34:55Speaker 2: recognized right away. Oh boy, I think there's a lane there.
- 34:58Speaker 2: I got to get back to that, to that spot. Look. Yeah,
- 35:02Speaker 2: see you can tell he almost that the mental gears
- 35:05Speaker 2: were working there. He kind of knew I better get
- 35:07Speaker 2: back there, right.
- 35:09Speaker 1: Those guys were pasted up front.
- 35:11Speaker 2: They gave him fits. I'm trying to run.
- 35:13Speaker 3: He barely ran the game, but they just they did
- 35:15Speaker 3: not give him much in terms of lanes.
- 35:17Speaker 1: Right, this is another third and fifteen in the third quarter.
- 35:21Speaker 1: This time, this one's gonna be Benito.
- 35:23Speaker 2: Yeah, and this one, I recall, I wasn't sure watching
- 35:27Speaker 2: this one if there was truly a defined throw for him.
- 35:30Speaker 1: Here I can go back and look at the other
- 35:32Speaker 1: of you to see if their throw.
- 35:34Speaker 2: If memory serves me correctly, because it's third and long,
- 35:37Speaker 2: they're going to rush for you know, no need to
- 35:40Speaker 2: blitz and be crazy. They're going to basically play Let's see,
- 35:44Speaker 2: it's two, it's cover six. They're playing quarters down below
- 35:47Speaker 2: and two up top, so it's cover six and Singleton's
- 35:51Speaker 2: running running the middle hole.
- 35:54Speaker 1: I mean, theoretically, do you want to just dump it's
- 35:57Speaker 1: third and fifteen, you're trying to play it safety, just
- 35:58Speaker 1: dump into your running shack.
- 36:00Speaker 2: Yeah exactly. I mean, yeah, you probably do. I mean,
- 36:04Speaker 2: but again he didn't.
- 36:06Speaker 1: Yeah, he got he took a He took a few
- 36:10Speaker 1: big shots in this game that were so usually hurts
- 36:12Speaker 1: can like get sacked without taking a dead on hit.
- 36:16Speaker 1: And once again, even though you saw that it was
- 36:20Speaker 1: the edge goes inside.
- 36:21Speaker 2: Yeah, gun, Jeff, And so what happened was is Benito
- 36:26Speaker 2: went inside of my alta and then my alta sees
- 36:28Speaker 2: the long stunt by I think it's Franklin Myers, perhaps, yep,
- 36:31Speaker 2: and so he So the stunt worked perfectly because then
- 36:34Speaker 2: my alta came off Benito to react to Franklin Myers. Right.
- 36:39Speaker 1: This one's McMillan, right, he's the nickel.
- 36:40Speaker 2: I believe this was perfection. Okay, this one you can't
- 36:45Speaker 2: pick up. Okay, people might you know, think well why not?
- 36:48Speaker 2: I think I I yeah, I'm just gonna read what
- 36:52Speaker 2: I typed here and then we can run it just
- 36:54Speaker 2: so people before they see the play. McMillan sack on
- 36:57Speaker 2: third and thirteen early in the fourth quarter came on
- 37:00Speaker 2: four man sim pressure from initial seven man front look
- 37:04Speaker 2: with both Ufanga and McMillan part of the pressure from
- 37:07Speaker 2: each edge. Broncos dropped into cover three and the Eagles,
- 37:10Speaker 2: based on their protection call, had no one to account
- 37:13Speaker 2: for McMillan because they're coming off both edges here. This
- 37:18Speaker 2: this is is just beautiful. But they got a seven
- 37:21Speaker 2: man front here, yep. I mean you know this is
- 37:24Speaker 2: this is really and because it's double mug ninety nine
- 37:28Speaker 2: point nine percent of the time in double mug, the
- 37:31Speaker 2: backsteps inside, so Barkley actually does a really good job
- 37:35Speaker 2: in recognizing when those two guys in the double mug drop.
- 37:39Speaker 2: He then tries to pick up Hufanga coming from his side,
- 37:43Speaker 2: but there's no one to pick up McMillan. There's m
- 37:48Speaker 2: try to get them, yeah.
- 37:49Speaker 1: Right, And for those just double mug means that the
- 37:54Speaker 1: linebackers right up in the a gaps over the center.
- 37:56Speaker 1: It looks like they're coming straight down.
- 37:58Speaker 2: And two guys on each side of the gap.
- 38:00Speaker 1: And then they wind up dropping into a coverage and
- 38:02Speaker 1: then drop into four man rush cover three.
- 38:05Speaker 2: It's a four man rush. It's pure cover three.
- 38:08Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, I was when I watched You really see
- 38:10Speaker 1: it from here?
- 38:11Speaker 2: Yes, it's there in dimes. So it's Barren and Singleton
- 38:14Speaker 2: and they're on each side of the center. And the
- 38:16Speaker 2: way this works if you freeze a first xf is
- 38:19Speaker 2: obviously they're starting to fall out. But ninety nine point
- 38:23Speaker 2: nine there's only two ways to block this. By the way,
- 38:25Speaker 2: you either have to have a full line slide in
- 38:27Speaker 2: which you're going to ask your back to block a
- 38:28Speaker 2: defensive end, or the center takes one of those guys,
- 38:32Speaker 2: and the back takes the other, which is what ninety
- 38:34Speaker 2: nine percent of teams do. Okay, So now Barkley, his
- 38:38Speaker 2: eyes are inside as they should be, and as soon
- 38:40Speaker 2: as he sees forty nine and twenty three drop at
- 38:43Speaker 2: whichever one he has. It turns out he was going
- 38:47Speaker 2: to have Singleton because look look at Jurgens. He goes
- 38:49Speaker 2: to his left, so he was going to take barn.
- 38:51Speaker 2: So so now Barkley does the right thing because he
- 38:55Speaker 2: senses Hufanga coming off, but there's no one to pick
- 38:59Speaker 2: up mcmill. Yeah. Now people might say, oh, what do
- 39:03Speaker 2: you mean Stein didn't block anybody, but go back. I
- 39:07Speaker 2: just want people to understand here, but pre snap, because
- 39:13Speaker 2: of the seven man front, Steen has fifty two, Johnson
- 39:16Speaker 2: has zero, and you can't. That's that's the way this
- 39:20Speaker 2: is mapped out. So just because fifty two ends up
- 39:23Speaker 2: dropping as well, if I'm not mistaken, does he end
- 39:25Speaker 2: up dropping or zero?
- 39:27Speaker 1: I think yeah, he drops, Sue Yeah, yeah.
- 39:30Speaker 2: But Steen, Now could you argue, oh, Stean should have
- 39:33Speaker 2: got zero and Lane Johnson should I mean, that's really hard,
- 39:37Speaker 2: that's really really hard. It's it's it's just a tough deal.
- 39:41Speaker 1: Yeah, what's your favorite phrase. You can't change a protection
- 39:44Speaker 1: while you're in the middle of I.
- 39:46Speaker 2: Mean sometimes you can, you know, maybe you can have
- 39:49Speaker 2: a slight reaction. It's not an adjustment, it's a reaction.
- 39:53Speaker 2: But you know, that's just hard. But there was technically
- 39:56Speaker 2: no one to account for McMillan.

- 42:24Speaker 1: So I thought that was actually a really well sometimes
- 42:27Speaker 1: you don't blame somebody, you give credit to the opponent.
- 42:30Speaker 1: For Vic Fangio does it all the time, and we
- 42:33Speaker 1: say credit Vic Fangio. He threw a simor he threw it.
- 42:35Speaker 2: And doing this a long time, and he's really good
- 42:38Speaker 2: at this.
- 42:38Speaker 1: Yeah, very very good.
- 42:39Speaker 3: Let me squash real quick, because people have asked us,
- 42:41Speaker 3: how did you notice bread Tooth at all in this game?
- 42:44Speaker 2: I really didn't, and I wasn't studying him, but he
- 42:47Speaker 2: didn't stand out in a bad way. He is good.
- 42:50Speaker 1: I generally thought protection was pretty good given how much
- 42:54Speaker 1: you know they were doing upfront, and like what we
- 42:56Speaker 1: just showed, it wasn't like Jillen Hurts he never had
- 42:59Speaker 1: time to throw the ball. I mean, I thought he
- 43:00Speaker 1: was protected fairly. Well.
- 43:02Speaker 2: Yeah, the bottom line for me is they've got to
- 43:04Speaker 2: find a way to get their run game working because
- 43:07Speaker 2: in the first half in a game that theoretically they
- 43:09Speaker 2: were controlling, even though the score might not have indicated,
- 43:12Speaker 2: you know, they were playing, they were controlling. I mean,
- 43:15Speaker 2: the defense was playing well, you know, they moved the
- 43:18Speaker 2: ball to some degree. Barkley at five first half carries
- 43:22Speaker 2: and Hertz had something like twenty two or twenty three
- 43:24Speaker 2: dropbacks are called past plays. That's they can't really play
- 43:29Speaker 2: like that, no doubt.
- 43:30Speaker 1: All right, So that is a look at the offense
- 43:33Speaker 1: in the next episode, will go into the Phillies. I'm sorry,
- 43:36Speaker 1: the Eagles defense after that, as they have a quick
- 43:39Speaker 1: turnaround before they played the Giants Thursday night. For Greg
- 43:42Speaker 1: Cosell and Adam Kaplan, I'm Jeff Mosher. You've been watching
- 43:45Speaker 1: inside the Tape with Greg Cosell on Inside the Birds
