- 0:00Hey everyone, and welcome to Mini Scroll, the daily Internet
- 0:03culture podcast bring you the biggest stories from social
- 0:06media, the creator economy and the digital space every Monday
- 0:09through Thursday and sometimes Fridays.
- 0:11My name is Annabelle and I'm your Wednesday Mini Tech Scroll
- 0:14host and also the deputy editor of the youth digital media brand
- 0:18Centennial World. Welcome back to Mini Tech Scroll
- 0:22for 2026. I really hope everyone had a
- 0:25relaxing fun break. If you took a break, my holiday
- 0:30day period was honestly quite a flop.
- 0:32I had a quite a tumultuous and if not cast and to 2025 and
- 0:37beginning of 2026. So I'm really hoping we can only
- 0:41go up from here. And also my apologies if I sound
- 0:44a little bit sick as well. I did spend a part of the
- 0:47holiday break a little bit under the weather and I definitely
- 0:50have a cough lingering so hopefully that doesn't impact
- 0:54how I sound. But yes, that is enough about me
- 0:57and my cast break. If you enjoyed this episode,
- 1:01Please remember to rate, review, and subscribe.
- 1:04And let's just get into the stories for this week.
- 1:06The first story we absolutely need to talk about is all this
- 1:10discussion around Open AI and Pinterest.
- 1:12If you run in tech circles or kind of get served up tech based
- 1:17content on your social media algorithms, you may have seen
- 1:21this. But basically everyone is
- 1:22convinced that Open AI is set to purchase Pinterest.
- 1:26So I did some digging to see where this all came from.
- 1:29And I believe the rumor slash claim goes back to an article
- 1:34published by The Information, which included an array of tech
- 1:38predictions for the coming year. And it was published on January
- 1:42too, so very recently. In the piece, reporter Anne
- 1:46Gehen predicted that Quote Open AI will make its biggest
- 1:49acquisition yet when it buys Pinterest.
- 1:52So from her perspective, it makes sense for both Open AI and
- 1:56Pinterest. Where she wrote Quote Open AI
- 1:59would be most interested in the bones of Pinterest business,
- 2:02like it's trove of image data and its existing advertising
- 2:05business, as well as its relationship with merchants.
- 2:08Pinterest digital scrapbooking features could also complement
- 2:11Open a is image and video generation tools.
- 2:14So essentially, the data on the platform would be a powerful way
- 2:17for Open AI to train its model, which would ultimately help it
- 2:21compete with other AI models, which we know is a constant
- 2:24concern for these AI companies. The reporter also adds that it
- 2:28is quite timely from a financial point of view, noting that it
- 2:32makes sense for Open AI to cash in on Pinterest now.
- 2:35I haven't seen anyone really talk about it from this angle
- 2:38though. But if Chachi PT or Open AI was
- 2:41to acquire Pinterest, I do think it could work to maybe lessen
- 2:46the AI gender gap. There has been a lot of talk
- 2:49online recently referencing various studies and research
- 2:52that show that women tend to use AI at lower rates than men,
- 2:57specifically in the workplace, but also across the board.
- 3:00And with Pinterest user base being 70% women, the potential
- 3:04to integrate open AI into this kind of platform could be
- 3:07valuable for big tech because obviously they are always
- 3:10looking at user data and uptake. Now I do want to say the The
- 3:13Information is definitely a reliable and legitimate source.
- 3:17For example, they were I think the first outlet to report on
- 3:20the planned launch of the US run version of the TikTok app.
- 3:24Obviously this has yet to eventuate, but as far as we know
- 3:27it does seem to be coming. So there is definitely weight to
- 3:30what is published by The Information where they are
- 3:33definitely Privy to conversation slash sources that other
- 3:36publications may not be. But there does seem to be a
- 3:40missing piece of information from many of the TikTok
- 3:43journalists and posts covering this story.
- 3:46Most of what I've seen failed to mention that this information
- 3:49came from a piece predicting 2026 and tech.
- 3:53It's not necessarily a scoop per SE, where they are definitely
- 3:56treating it as a solid deal. This is not to say that this
- 4:00won't happen, but it's important to consume this information with
- 4:04that piece of context. I will say though, that many
- 4:06social media users have had quite a strong response to these
- 4:10rumors, with many of them upset with the prospect of opening AI
- 4:14intertwining itself with another social media platform.
- 4:17As we know, they famously made a deal with Reddit, and I think
- 4:20this is only worsened by the fact that there's definitely
- 4:23been an uptick of Pinterest users complaining about the
- 4:26increasing amount of AI generated content on the
- 4:29platform. And to combat this, Pinterest
- 4:32has also added controls that let users limit the amount of AI
- 4:35that they see in their feeds. But this isn't perfect yet and I
- 4:39think AI continues to sneak on through.
- 4:42So with many users upset with the amount of AI on Pinterest,
- 4:47it makes sense that they wouldn't want open AI to acquire
- 4:50the platform as well. That brings us to my next story
- 4:53for today and I wanted to talk about everything going on with
- 4:56Annas Archive. This is a little bit more niche,
- 4:59but obviously that is what we love here on Mini Tech and Mini
- 5:02Scroll. So if you're unfamiliar with
- 5:05Anna's archive, it's a search engine for quote UN quote shadow
- 5:09libraries, which are essentially repositories of media ranging
- 5:12from books, music to films that are not readily available.
- 5:17For example, they may be behind a paywall or copyrighted or
- 5:20whatever. So one of the most famous
- 5:23examples of this is Z Library or Z Library, however you want to
- 5:27say it, which hosted a lot of academic articles and textbooks
- 5:31and even just more general books.
- 5:32At one point it had become the world's largest e-book library.
- 5:36I feel like when I was at university, I had heard of Z
- 5:39Library. I have heard of people using it
- 5:42and it has repeatedly been shut down or blocked or kind of just
- 5:46faced constant legal battles over the years because of the
- 5:50copyright issue. So Anna's Archive emerged out of
- 5:53the backlash to Z Library and it was launched in 2022.
- 5:57According to the blog on Anna's archive, the goal is to quote
- 6:01contribute to the preservation and liberal preparation of human
- 6:04knowledge. So it essentially operates as a
- 6:07search engine that helps users find certain pirated material
- 6:11elsewhere. As the blog continues, quote, we
- 6:14focus on preservation, not on making books easily searchable
- 6:17and downloadable are fostering a big community of people who
- 6:21contribute new books. In terms of the archives
- 6:24preservation efforts, they did make headlines quite recently
- 6:27after allegedly scraping 86 million music files from
- 6:30Spotify. But that brings us to the story
- 6:32that I wanted to discuss today, and that is that the Anna's
- 6:35archives.org domain name has reportedly been suspended.
- 6:39The operator, Anna archivist on Reddit shared a post to the R
- 6:43slash Anna under score archive subreddit to explain the
- 6:46situation. As it reads, quotethe.org domain
- 6:49apparently has been suspended. Our other domains work fine, and
- 6:52we've added some more. This unfortunately happens to
- 6:55shadow libraries on a regular basis.
- 6:57We don't believe this has to do with our Spotify backup.
- 7:00So even though Anna's archive is still working on other domains
- 7:03names, I have seen an array of tik toks including people who
- 7:07are very upset thatthe.org domain name has been suspended.
- 7:10So onset that now. And now because some of you
- 7:13people don't know how to fucking not post every single thing you
- 7:16goddamn do online, especially under Reddit, we lost Anna's
- 7:20archives. Now I don't get free books
- 7:22anymore. I literally got my free version
- 7:25of the constitution from Anna's archives.
- 7:27OK, all The Hunger Games books. While these suspensions and
- 7:34blocks definitely happen often, I thought this was an
- 7:37interesting story to cover because of the conversations
- 7:40that we are having online at the moment, all about the return to
- 7:42physical media and how important it is to actually own your own
- 7:46content and media, whether that be through physical books, CDs
- 7:50or whatever. There is definitely growing
- 7:52discontent among Internet users when it comes to being at the
- 7:56whims of big tech or streaming platforms, especially when it
- 8:00comes to consuming content. And archival tools like Anna's
- 8:03Archive kind of share a similar sentiment.
- 8:06I think in that these shadow libraries want to democratize
- 8:10knowledge, ensure access to knowledge and also ownership of
- 8:14content in some degree. This is also one side of the
- 8:17Internet that we don't talk about super often.
- 8:20We have covered something similar in an infinite scroll
- 8:23episode when we spoke about the Internet Archive.
- 8:26But I think the conversations around piracy, copyright, as
- 8:29well as ensuring access to information are really
- 8:32interesting and important, and I'm definitely curious to hear
- 8:35what you guys make of all this. I have two more stories and they
- 8:38are both slightly shorter. I think the first one I wanted
- 8:42to mention is UK specific, but I thought it was noteworthy for
- 8:45today's episode. So according to a recent report,
- 8:49Reddit has officially overtaken TikTok in terms of site visits
- 8:52in the UK. According to a report published
- 8:55by the UK Office of Communications, it was revealed
- 8:58that Reddit is the fourth most visited social media media
- 9:00service. As the 2025 report reads, quote
- 9:04Reddit experience double figures year on year growth in their
- 9:07monthly audiences for the second year in a row, now reaching 60%
- 9:11of UK Internet users, up from 48% in May 2024.
- 9:16This marks an 88% increase in two years, placing it ahead of
- 9:19TikTok as the fourth most visited social media service.
- 9:23While this obviously is UK specific, I do always think it's
- 9:26quite interesting to look at how other people in other countries
- 9:30around the world are consuming media and using social media
- 9:34because I think it can be an interesting way to kind of maybe
- 9:37see what's coming or things to kind of look out for in
- 9:41different media landscapes around the world.
- 9:43As for why Reddit is gaining popularity, there are definitely
- 9:46a few reasons. Michael Savage for The Guardian
- 9:49makes the claim that has a lot to do with Google's changing
- 9:52search algorithm, which I can definitely see and I agree with.
- 9:56He notes that Google's move to prioritize content from Russian
- 10:00forums definitely benefits Reddit.
- 10:02And this is something I've actually only noticed recently.
- 10:04Maybe it was only rolled out to me recently or I just don't pay
- 10:08attention when I Google search things these days, but
- 10:11underneath the search bar there was an option to click forms so
- 10:14you're only directed to certain forms instead of just websites.
- 10:18On top of this, Reddit has also struck a deal with Google for
- 10:22its AI, which I think we have spoken about before, but that
- 10:26could have also helped the platform gain popularity and
- 10:29site visits. As Michael Savage continues
- 10:32quote, A recent deal with Google that allows the company to train
- 10:35its AI model on Reddit's content also appears to have provided a
- 10:38boost. Reddit is the most cited source
- 10:41for Google AI overviews, which is likely to see more people
- 10:44directed to its forums. I think the increase in AI
- 10:48online also benefits Reddit, not just because of the fact that it
- 10:51is popping up in AI overviews, but because I think people who
- 10:56are tired of AI or distrustful of it might want to turn to
- 11:02platforms that highlight human experiences, communities, and
- 11:06stories. And I'm sure over the years,
- 11:09many of us have just become accustomed to adding Reddit at
- 11:12the end of the search query on Google to hear from real people.
- 11:15So I think that also plays into Reddit's growth here.
- 11:19And from a youth perspective or Gen.
- 11:21Z perspective, since obviously we are Centennial World, we know
- 11:26that Gen. Z are drawn to platforms like
- 11:28Reddit because of the anonymity that it offers growing up in a
- 11:31time when literally everything is publicized or shared online.
- 11:35Gen. Z have more of a tendency to be
- 11:37private and mysterious online, at least compared to millennials
- 11:41where Reddit definitely fits neatly into this category.
- 11:45I do think Reddit has also become less manosphere focused
- 11:49since like the mid twenty 10s so that also helps expand its user
- 11:54base. But going back to the popularity
- 11:57of Reddit, I should also add that the time spent on Reddit
- 12:00per day is significantly lower than the other platforms in the
- 12:04top five according to this UK based report.
- 12:08For example, YouTube, Facebook slash Messenger, Instagram and
- 12:11TikTok are all between 20 and like 50 minutes where Reddit is
- 12:15full. So that just tells me people
- 12:17aren't necessarily passively scrolling through Reddit where
- 12:20they're on the platform for a really specific reason.
- 12:23And of course, that does make it quite a powerful tool for brands
- 12:27who are like seeking to answer a specific question or solve a
- 12:30particular problem or say influencers who are part of a
- 12:33specific niche to kind of build awareness.
- 12:37But as we know, credit has always struggled to monetize
- 12:40through these kind of partnerships, which is why the
- 12:43deals with AI giants are so significant.
- 12:45Our last story for today is unfortunate, and it's probably
- 12:48one of the biggest stories in social media tech this week.
- 12:51And that is everything happening with Grok.
- 12:54So Grok, which is obviously X's AI as we've spoken about before,
- 12:58has come under fire after the rollout of a new feature a
- 13:01couple weeks ago. Basically, this feature allows a
- 13:05user to ask the bot to edit a photo, any photo, without the
- 13:09permission of the owner, or if the photo includes a person, it
- 13:13doesn't need the permission of the person in the photo.
- 13:16Unfortunately, this feature was quickly used for nefarious and
- 13:22frankly disgusting reasons. Users started asking the AI to
- 13:26remove clothing from people featured in various images.
- 13:30According to The Verge, AI authentication company Copy
- 13:33Leaks reported that quote, the trend to remove clothing from
- 13:36images began with adult content creators asking Gruck for sexy
- 13:40images of themselves. After the release of the new
- 13:43image editing feature, users then began applying similar
- 13:46prompts to photos of other users, predominantly women, who
- 13:49did not consent to the edits. Gruck was not only allowing for
- 13:53clothing to be removed from these photos, but these edits
- 13:56also included putting people in these pictures in sexual or
- 14:00degrading positions and situations.
- 14:02And of course, it was often women and girls.
- 14:04At the time of reassuring this episode, there's been no
- 14:08apology, statement or comment from Elon Musk or XAI about this
- 14:12quote UN quote trend. In fact, Elon Musk has continued
- 14:16to go on and promote the feature slash tool further.
- 14:19And allegedly, the only statement that has been made by
- 14:23XAI is 1 and that is automated. Various media outlets have
- 14:27reported that they have received an automatic response when
- 14:30reaching out for comment, one that read quote legacy media
- 14:34lies. Aside from this, there has been
- 14:36a lot of coverage from certain publications talking about how
- 14:40the AI bot has allegedly apologized itself.
- 14:44Taylor Lorenz, in a recent issue of Usamad, collated a number of
- 14:48headlines as she writes Quote Musk's AI chatbot Grok
- 14:52apologizes after generating sexualized image of young girls,
- 14:551 local NBC affiliate Headline read CBS News Local affiliates
- 15:00published headlines with similar phrasing, including Elon Musk's
- 15:03AI chatbot Grok apologized. The Hill, Newsweek, The
- 15:06Guardian, and a slew of other outlets have similarly quoted
- 15:09Grok as apologizing. She goes on to make the claim
- 15:13that Grok cannot quote UN quote apologize, where any kind of
- 15:17conciliatory or apologetic responses is simply pattern
- 15:21recognition. And I do think this is an
- 15:23important point, because it allows for the appearance of
- 15:26accountability from X, but it's likely not going to lead to any
- 15:30true changes to the feature. Of course, this isn't the first
- 15:34time, and probably won't be the last time that Grok has
- 15:37generated something of this nature.
- 15:39But every time I am reporting on A, a story like this, I'm
- 15:42reminded of a book by Laura Bates, the New Age of Sexism.
- 15:46I cite this book all the time. I promise you it's not the only
- 15:48book I've ever read. It's just super interesting.
- 15:51And one of the main takeaways from this book is that we are
- 15:55living in such an early stage of AI.
- 15:58And while this tech is developing and we are at kind of
- 16:01the ground floor quote, UN quote, we are watching misogyny
- 16:04be baked into the very fabric of this kind of generative
- 16:08technology. That is why it's so important to
- 16:11continue obviously bring light to these stories and also
- 16:14challenge the patriarchy slash misogyny in real life, not just
- 16:19in tech. Because at the end of the day,
- 16:20this tech is reflecting our current society, desires,
- 16:25beliefs, ideals, whatever. And that is why I will probably
- 16:29never stop referencing this book.
- 16:31But yes, that brings us to the end of the first mini tech
- 16:36scroll for 2026. I really hope you guys found the
- 16:39stories interesting and I am excited to be back.
- 16:42I'm feeling way less nervous than I felt in the first episode
- 16:47of 2025, obviously, because now I have a year of this under my
- 16:50belt. But yeah, I'm looking forward to
- 16:52it. I will speak to you next week.
- 16:54Lauren will speak to you guys tomorrow.
- 16:56And thank you so much for listening.
- 16:58Bye.
