- 0:08Speaker 1: This is Me eater podcast coming at you shirtless, severely
- 0:13Speaker 1: bug bitten and in my case, underwear listening podcast. You
- 0:18Speaker 1: can't predict anything. You know. What was like a weird
- 0:29Speaker 1: emotion I had the other day is I was coming
- 0:33Speaker 1: back from a trip and and and I get a
- 0:37Speaker 1: call with my wife and she's saying that my boy,
- 0:39Speaker 1: my oldest boy, has been invited to go fishing with
- 0:48Speaker 1: his body and that buddy's dad. And it was like, uh,
- 0:54Speaker 1: it felt like my old lady is going out on
- 0:55Speaker 1: a date with another guy. That's what you said, Yeah
- 1:00Speaker 1: you feel Did you get over that? Yeah? I got
- 1:02Speaker 1: over because I realized it's like, you know, it's like
- 1:04Speaker 1: a totally unfair feeling, but I felt like I was
- 1:05Speaker 1: getting cheated on. He'd never gone fishing outside, like fishing
- 1:09Speaker 1: with my brothers. I think a little bit, maybe up
- 1:11Speaker 1: in our shack or something. Um he'd uh yeah, he'd
- 1:16Speaker 1: never fished with another man. And it like left me feeling,
- 1:20Speaker 1: uh yeah, I was jealous. My initial feeling was like,
- 1:22Speaker 1: of course, of course, but the back of my mind
- 1:24Speaker 1: I was feeling jealous. Then he wanted up catching a fish,
- 1:27Speaker 1: brought home to flay. He's all excited ate a bunch
- 1:30Speaker 1: of it last night. Yeah, it's probably good for him
- 1:35Speaker 1: to to uh have other teachers. Yeah, I was just
- 1:38Speaker 1: hoping they'd get skunked so he'd be like, if you
- 1:42Speaker 1: want to catch fish, you gotta go with the old man.
- 1:44Speaker 1: And now he's like, anybody can catch fish. Did you
- 1:46Speaker 1: come home with anything like oh we did this different
- 1:49Speaker 1: or so and so. No, but he if you turn around,
- 1:52Speaker 1: you'll see that rig right there. That's what he caught it.
- 1:54Speaker 1: That's what he caught. A silver on. He caught a
- 1:56Speaker 1: little he caught a little dink or like twelve inch
- 1:59Speaker 1: king that he that they turned out and then uh,
- 2:01Speaker 1: and then he caught a silver on. That sounds like
- 2:04Speaker 1: the dude he was with, which is pretty nice. Like
- 2:07Speaker 1: duty is with the way my kid tells it is
- 2:10Speaker 1: the guy says, hey, hold this rode, I gotta do something.
- 2:13Speaker 1: I gotta run an errand on the boat. And the
- 2:16Speaker 1: way my boy tells it is the minute he held
- 2:18Speaker 1: the rod, why I am a fish hit? But I
- 2:20Speaker 1: feel like I got checked. I haven't chatted with him yet.
- 2:23Speaker 1: I feel like what happened was he maybe he hooked
- 2:26Speaker 1: the fish, which is just like move right to not
- 2:28Speaker 1: be like, hey, Sonny, there's a fish on here, but
- 2:31Speaker 1: just hand the rod and let him have like the
- 2:33Speaker 1: discovery one being honored. So I feel like he was
- 2:35Speaker 1: pretty shrewd, which makes me think he's a good guy.
- 2:37Speaker 1: But then he brought the fish home. He brought one
- 2:40Speaker 1: flay home. He said another family kept the other flay
- 2:44Speaker 1: because it was like a couple of guys out there
- 2:45Speaker 1: with kids. And uh, so he brought one flay home.
- 2:50Speaker 1: And I took my Japanese bone pickers and uh pick
- 2:54Speaker 1: the bones out and then the sounds growerty, But it's
- 2:58Speaker 1: not man. You were just saying may oh, like take
- 3:01Speaker 1: mayo and seasoning salt and lemon and herbs like parsley, whatever,
- 3:05Speaker 1: mince it up, mix it all together, and just like
- 3:09Speaker 1: layer that, spread that on the fish and then cook
- 3:12Speaker 1: it and then broil. That's good ship man. But you
- 3:15Speaker 1: tell people like you're gonna coat it, and yeah, it
- 3:19Speaker 1: sounds weird. You just gotta say I'm coating in in
- 3:21Speaker 1: the sauce ras and saying based on coating that something.
- 3:25Speaker 1: Go back to Japanese bone picker. Oh, my Japanese bone pickers.
- 3:29Speaker 1: I have genuine stainless steel Japanese bone pickers. I mean
- 3:34Speaker 1: it looks just like a fans pair of tweezers. It
- 3:37Speaker 1: looks like the like a fingernail clipper, but not sharp. Yeah.
- 3:44Speaker 1: You know what's funny too about picking bones out of
- 3:46Speaker 1: salmon is uh, when I'm talking about picking bones on top,
- 3:49Speaker 1: about picking the pin bones right, like when you when
- 3:53Speaker 1: you flay a salmon or any number fish, you can
- 3:56Speaker 1: either like take the flay off with the ribs, then
- 4:00Speaker 1: just rib it in one piece and just take all
- 4:02Speaker 1: the ribs out comes off like a plant pain of glass,
- 4:06Speaker 1: you know. Or you take the ribs off, or you
- 4:10Speaker 1: either flay around the ribs and leave the ribs connected
- 4:13Speaker 1: in their rightful place to connect it to the spine,
- 4:15Speaker 1: or you take the whole damn thing off, ribs and all,
- 4:17Speaker 1: and then rib it. But the pin bones um, particularly
- 4:22Speaker 1: on a salmon, you just grabb with a pair of
- 4:24Speaker 1: needle nose. But my Japanese bone pickers are amazing. Uh,
- 4:29Speaker 1: I like them. But the funny thing is what I
- 4:32Speaker 1: found is when that fish is in like a rigor state,
- 4:34Speaker 1: even if it's just a flame, it's very difficult to
- 4:38Speaker 1: pull those bones mm hmm. If you set it like
- 4:42Speaker 1: the muscles hanging on. Yeah, Like if you freeze a
- 4:44Speaker 1: fish and then pick the bones, they pick easy. If
- 4:48Speaker 1: you catch a fish and go to pin bone it
- 4:50Speaker 1: right away, it's difficult. You set it in your fridge overnight.
- 4:53Speaker 1: It's easy to pick. So if you e k G
- 4:56Speaker 1: made it would be easy to pay. I bet if
- 4:58Speaker 1: your e k G made it, you the Japanese bone
- 5:01Speaker 1: pickers would work even better. Yeah, but you can use these,
- 5:04Speaker 1: these these pickers. You can pick all kinds of fish
- 5:06Speaker 1: with them. Um. And the reason I'm calling them Japanese
- 5:09Speaker 1: they actually came with There was no English on the package.
- 5:12Speaker 1: I ordered them. After finding out about them, I was
- 5:15Speaker 1: looking at a Japanese how to cookbook. A Japanese cookbook
- 5:19Speaker 1: you gotta read from back to front. Um, it's just
- 5:22Speaker 1: pictures of how to let cut up every fish on
- 5:24Speaker 1: the planet, and in there they're always picking bones. And
- 5:28Speaker 1: I was like, what the hell are those? So I
- 5:29Speaker 1: got to sniffing around online and I found those bone
- 5:31Speaker 1: pickers for nine bucks. Nice nine bucks. Yeah, but it's
- 5:36Speaker 1: just one more thing you gotta worry about someone losing. Man, Like,
- 5:39Speaker 1: when I see my kids, of those makes you want
- 5:40Speaker 1: to kill them much as I like them, speaking of
- 5:43Speaker 1: ordering stuff, I ordered a pair of fishing players, did you. Yeah,
- 5:47Speaker 1: I got a new rule where I don't fish with
- 5:49Speaker 1: growing ups who don't have their own fishing players. And
- 5:52Speaker 1: now I don't backpack with growing ups who don't have
- 5:56Speaker 1: their own sterry pen to sterilized water. I'll probably come
- 6:01Speaker 1: up with more ship like this as time goes by,
- 6:03Speaker 1: but that's where I'm at right now, with being rigid
- 6:04Speaker 1: about people being mainly as fishing players. Man, yeah, it's depainting,
- 6:09Speaker 1: but when you gotta constantly be finding yours, taking them
- 6:12Speaker 1: off the land, you'red and pass them around. Yeah, and
- 6:14Speaker 1: with saltwater, you know, like all the stuff is real heavy,
- 6:18Speaker 1: so you can't get through it, you know. Yeah, it's
- 6:21Speaker 1: not like you like I used to use. I wore
- 6:23Speaker 1: a groove my teeth, cut line my teeth, but you
- 6:25Speaker 1: can't cut my eighty pound plays out there with my
- 6:29Speaker 1: pocket knife cutting through the eighty pound mono, And that's
- 6:31Speaker 1: just not safe in a rocking boat when you just
- 6:34Speaker 1: got that knife, you know, out and about all the time.
- 6:37Speaker 1: Speaking of gear, not speaking of salmon flaze, not speaking
- 6:40Speaker 1: to Mayo, but speaking to gear, what we're gonna do.
- 6:43Speaker 1: We're doing a thing here. This is for all the
- 6:46Speaker 1: mugs that our eyes right in, like asking like super
- 6:48Speaker 1: specific gear questions, UM gear something like I like to
- 6:55Speaker 1: think about it more than I really like to talk
- 6:58Speaker 1: about it. Kind of that's kind of true. And I've
- 7:01Speaker 1: even declared I've even got we used to argue so
- 7:03Speaker 1: vehemently about geared for a while. I tried to have
- 7:06Speaker 1: it be that I would not gay engage in any
- 7:08Speaker 1: conversation arguing about the merits of various gear pieces. But
- 7:13Speaker 1: we're gonna do a big major gear deal here because
- 7:18Speaker 1: Yanni is going on um extracurricular uh hunting trip right now,
- 7:27Speaker 1: So he's all packed up to go for how long
- 7:30Speaker 1: a week? Yeah, roughly a week. So he's going hunting
- 7:33Speaker 1: for about a week with his bone arrow four elk
- 7:38Speaker 1: during the elk rut where he's a little background here
- 7:43Speaker 1: where he's going. Um, it would if you were gone
- 7:51Speaker 1: for a week, I would expect it to be in
- 7:55Speaker 1: the seventies sometimes, and I would expect it to be
- 8:00Speaker 1: dumping wet ass snow on you sometimes. Yeah, I think
- 8:05Speaker 1: that's a safe and something. It's like you will have
- 8:07Speaker 1: a morning, not not for sure, but like a very
- 8:10Speaker 1: good chance you will have mornings where you wake up
- 8:13Speaker 1: and there's six inches of just sopping wet slush on
- 8:18Speaker 1: all your ship, and you will wake up and you
- 8:23Speaker 1: will have midday periods when you're moving to a new
- 8:25Speaker 1: area and you gotta hike three or four miles into
- 8:27Speaker 1: a new zone. Um, when it's uncomfortably hot, right, yeah,
- 8:36Speaker 1: and I expect you could have you know, not only that,
- 8:39Speaker 1: I was thinking about it, because I was thinking about
- 8:40Speaker 1: sun protection, you know, for those moments. Um, so you
- 8:44Speaker 1: want to be like stripped down so you're comfortable, but
- 8:46Speaker 1: you also need some protection. So you know, like long
- 8:48Speaker 1: sleeve versus sunscreen. What kind of hat do you want
- 8:51Speaker 1: for it? But uh, yeah, I can imagine, um, not
- 8:55Speaker 1: just that, but like maybe possibly finding a betted herd,
- 9:00Speaker 1: you know that's on a ridge or something, and you're
- 9:02Speaker 1: moving in for the kill, you get within you know,
- 9:04Speaker 1: shooting range, and then you're sitting there at two PM,
- 9:09Speaker 1: known damn well that those probably aren't gonna stand up
- 9:11Speaker 1: until six and you're just exposed and you need to
- 9:15Speaker 1: be protected because it might be this beaten down sun
- 9:19Speaker 1: or could be spitting sail and everything. To keep in mind, Oh,
- 9:24Speaker 1: you're kind of in the you're in your you're you're
- 9:28Speaker 1: dead center, you're dead center. Uh, in the in the
- 9:34Speaker 1: population of about eight hundred grizzlies. So you'll see some
- 9:40Speaker 1: little mentions of that. And there, give her take a
- 9:42Speaker 1: couple of hundreds, give her take a couple of No, yeah,
- 9:47Speaker 1: maybe more. Yes, it's been referred to as I've been
- 9:51Speaker 1: planning for this trip, it's been referred to as the
- 9:53Speaker 1: grizzly pit. Yes. Yeah, it's just like, well, we were
- 9:57Speaker 1: in a zone that long ago and we saw six
- 10:00Speaker 1: or seven and a couple of what we see seven
- 10:02Speaker 1: seven in a few days, um, different bears, you know,
- 10:06Speaker 1: seven different ones, including some youngsters in there. Now all right,
- 10:13Speaker 1: talk about talk like like run through the duds you bring.
- 10:18Speaker 1: And this this is like, like I said, this is
- 10:19Speaker 1: like something that people pastor not pastor about, but just
- 10:22Speaker 1: asked so much about. And uh. Also before we get
- 10:27Speaker 1: into this, keep in mind the stuff we're gonna be
- 10:28Speaker 1: talking about isn't just necessarily for this, but this is
- 10:31Speaker 1: like what you use no matter what you were going
- 10:34Speaker 1: to do. Yeah, definitely, I think you just really make adjustments. Um.
- 10:39Speaker 1: Certainly temperature, you know, as the year goes on, it
- 10:43Speaker 1: gets colder, you're gonna expect more snow. So that's when
- 10:47Speaker 1: something like, you know, we'll make adjustments towards that. We
- 10:50Speaker 1: can talk about that later. And uh, you might have
- 10:52Speaker 1: a shooting iron instead of a bone arrow exactly, and
- 10:55Speaker 1: you might have different optics, um, you know, or extra optics. Uh.
- 11:05Speaker 1: But yeah, I feel like the base is pretty much
- 11:09Speaker 1: always going to be the same. You know, little accessories
- 11:12Speaker 1: here and there, But the little accessories add up to
- 11:13Speaker 1: a lot of weights sometimes. So you only told you
- 11:20Speaker 1: only told one like you got one pair of socks. No,
- 11:24Speaker 1: So yeah, I broke down my uh, um, what does
- 11:28Speaker 1: jump in with the duds the clothing? And I broke
- 11:30Speaker 1: it down into like what I'm probably gonna be wearing
- 11:33Speaker 1: of the time, and then what's probably gonna be in
- 11:36Speaker 1: my backpack most of the time. So you're only wearing
- 11:39Speaker 1: one pair, which makes a lot of sense. Yeah, and
- 11:41Speaker 1: I'll have basically one pair as an extra. Do you
- 11:43Speaker 1: remember the old days and your kids, and you thought
- 11:45Speaker 1: that like putting more socks on, yes, and then putting
- 11:49Speaker 1: bread bags on them was like gonna be like the
- 11:51Speaker 1: ticket to warmth holies. Yeah, Um, cotton socks on the
- 11:56Speaker 1: last when you're putting your boots on. Trying your boots on,
- 12:00Speaker 1: you need to make sure that you can freely wiggle
- 12:03Speaker 1: your toes around, or else you will be a cold
- 12:06Speaker 1: little hunter. Um. So you got one of them on
- 12:11Speaker 1: and then you run Marino, well, Marino boxers. Yeah. See
- 12:16Speaker 1: that's the deal man. This is like, you know, the
- 12:17Speaker 1: old boxer's briefs thing. I'm not a boxer's man, and
- 12:22Speaker 1: you're kind of stuck like boxers versus briefs, not boxer briefs. No, no, no,
- 12:27Speaker 1: boxers versus briefs. Yeah, I'm not a boxer's man. I was,
- 12:32Speaker 1: but I'm not. And um, that's a real Achilles heel
- 12:37Speaker 1: for you. Cotton, it's the one cotton thing. Hold on,
- 12:41Speaker 1: I know that there's companies that make non cotton briefs. Well,
- 12:46Speaker 1: they make those weird synthetic e ones. Yeah, I don't
- 12:48Speaker 1: like them. Those ones you can like washing the hotel
- 12:50Speaker 1: sink and dry them out real fast. No, I don't
- 12:52Speaker 1: like them. M yeah, man, it's an a killer. It's
- 12:56Speaker 1: like the weak link in the gear. Is that one
- 13:00Speaker 1: cotton thing? Yeah? Because they certainly I feel like those,
- 13:04Speaker 1: um are the ones we I use and most of
- 13:06Speaker 1: our crew uses the first light red Desert. I believe
- 13:09Speaker 1: they're called boxer shorts, and they come down you know,
- 13:12Speaker 1: you know, my long legs, like almost the tops of
- 13:14Speaker 1: my knees, So I feel like with those, and then
- 13:17Speaker 1: if I, you know, pull up a long pair of
- 13:18Speaker 1: socks to the bottom of my knees, it's like you
- 13:21Speaker 1: almost have a whole second layer covering you know, your
- 13:24Speaker 1: legs underneath your pants. But doesn't get hot in the
- 13:29Speaker 1: you know, the Marino they're not that loose right there,
- 13:34Speaker 1: like tight fitting Marino will bob. They're not loose at all.
- 13:38Speaker 1: Actually they don't fit, probably quite as tight as um
- 13:43Speaker 1: as briefs, but no, and they actually can prevent chafing,
- 13:47Speaker 1: right Like, I don't have that problems. I've got chicken legs.
- 13:50Speaker 1: But if you got like I feel like a thick
- 13:51Speaker 1: thighed fella, yeah, your thighs are rubbing, that can prevent
- 13:56Speaker 1: you know, a little chafing down there. Oh yeah. But anyways, Yeah,
- 14:01Speaker 1: I'm going like, and I'm gonna really try to stick
- 14:04Speaker 1: to this list. I'm actually gonna pack probably tonight and
- 14:06Speaker 1: finish packing in the morning and then go to and
- 14:08Speaker 1: then I'm walking into the woods tomorrow. But uh, I'm
- 14:11Speaker 1: going one pair of boxing shorts like the ones you
- 14:14Speaker 1: got on, just the ones I got on that. Yeah,
- 14:16Speaker 1: but that's a good move because people like the more stuff,
- 14:21Speaker 1: you like, the more clothes and things. I feel like
- 14:24Speaker 1: a lot of people bring too many socks, too many underwear.
- 14:26Speaker 1: It's just stuff to manage. We'll manage. And like we
- 14:29Speaker 1: we had the luxury like along a lot of our
- 14:31Speaker 1: hunts where we like recently got flown in and so
- 14:36Speaker 1: couple three, four, even ten pounds of extra gear, it's
- 14:40Speaker 1: just gonna sit in my tent. I'm not really packing
- 14:42Speaker 1: it around when we leave to go han or whatever.
- 14:44Speaker 1: Now we're packing on plenty of other stuff because we're working,
- 14:47Speaker 1: so there's cameras and batteries and whatnot. But here I'm
- 14:50Speaker 1: really like, there's none of that stuff. It's this is
- 14:53Speaker 1: purely for fun. And so there might be times when
- 14:55Speaker 1: I'm actually having my whole camp and all my gear
- 14:58Speaker 1: on my back and I might be chang sing elk.
- 15:00Speaker 1: And I know from experience when the first time I
- 15:02Speaker 1: ever did that, I walked into the woods where I
- 15:04Speaker 1: think with a with all my water well with I
- 15:09Speaker 1: think it was roughly three liters of water on my back.
- 15:13Speaker 1: I was chasing elk around with like a fifty five
- 15:16Speaker 1: to sixty pound pack. Very quickly after the first morning,
- 15:21Speaker 1: I was like, I need to change. I need to
- 15:23Speaker 1: like figure out a different system, because when you're like
- 15:25Speaker 1: you're chasing a bugling bowl and you got fifty five
- 15:27Speaker 1: pounds on your back, you're not like you're not the
- 15:30Speaker 1: same hunter as you are if you have a little
- 15:32Speaker 1: day pack on your back. It's a big difference. You know,
- 15:35Speaker 1: your legs are getting smoked because in your mind you're like,
- 15:37Speaker 1: oh my gosh, bugle and bull run, run, run, RNT run,
- 15:40Speaker 1: and then an hour later your legs are like, dude,
- 15:43Speaker 1: what's this all about? You? Yeah, I know that's that's heavy.
- 15:46Speaker 1: But I think a lot of guys like just I
- 15:48Speaker 1: don't know. I feel like some guys just like over
- 15:51Speaker 1: do it and think about it. They do. But here again,
- 15:54Speaker 1: I mean, we can go down this rabbit hole and
- 15:57Speaker 1: go on forever. But if you really want to chase
- 16:01Speaker 1: salk with your camp on your back and be able
- 16:04Speaker 1: to stop at the end of the day and then
- 16:07Speaker 1: just be there and not use the time and energy
- 16:10Speaker 1: to go back to camp, you have to be fairly light,
- 16:14Speaker 1: all right, so I got your socks, and you've got
- 16:17Speaker 1: that far, so you might bring some sneakers or and
- 16:23Speaker 1: or is this and or or you're you're running like
- 16:26Speaker 1: mountain hunting booth. I think I'm gonna go and and
- 16:29Speaker 1: this is a place where it's gonna be extra weight.
- 16:31Speaker 1: But these high top sneakers I figured for my size.
- 16:33Speaker 1: I think they I just looked up to wait, they're
- 16:36Speaker 1: like fourteen ounces for a pair of nines. Okay, so
- 16:40Speaker 1: under a back I'm sorry, Yeah, they were under a pound. Yeah,
- 16:44Speaker 1: but for a pair of twelves, I'm looking probably a
- 16:46Speaker 1: little bit over a pound, right, there's not that much
- 16:48Speaker 1: more there. Um, and you want them for sneaking up
- 16:53Speaker 1: a couple of things like I've got um Morton's neu
- 16:56Speaker 1: roma in my feet, which is like Morton's neuroma. I
- 17:00Speaker 1: know you got feet problems. Yeah, it's basically like nerves
- 17:05Speaker 1: getting um agitated by metatursal bones, and it creates like
- 17:12Speaker 1: after a while, usually around five or six miles, it
- 17:15Speaker 1: can create some immense paint to the point where you
- 17:17Speaker 1: just like want to stop walking and take his shoes off.
- 17:20Speaker 1: Eat ibuprofen. It's bad. The softer than mid soul isn't
- 17:24Speaker 1: a pair of shoes. The longer I can go without
- 17:27Speaker 1: getting to that like, the stiffer that mid soul is,
- 17:30Speaker 1: the more quickly it starts to agitate and it hurts.
- 17:33Speaker 1: So having an extra pair of sneakers, especially if I
- 17:36Speaker 1: want to trail, say i'm packing in or packing out,
- 17:40Speaker 1: I'll carry my heavy, heavier, you know, mountain boots on
- 17:45Speaker 1: my back, even though that's you know, four or five
- 17:47Speaker 1: pounds back there, because I'm no at some point we'll
- 17:49Speaker 1: be running across the side of a mountain on some shale,
- 17:51Speaker 1: and I'm gonna want those. But so I can just
- 17:53Speaker 1: bang out five, six, seven miles on a trail quickly, comfortably,
- 17:58Speaker 1: I might not have my feet. Yeah, and then you
- 18:02Speaker 1: put your then you put your barre tooths on and again. Oh.
- 18:07Speaker 1: Something we didn't talk about is I'm going hunting with
- 18:09Speaker 1: your brother, right, So we got llamas. Um, so I'm
- 18:13Speaker 1: he's already in the woods. I'm going in there to
- 18:15Speaker 1: meet him. I need to be self sufficient just in case,
- 18:18Speaker 1: for whatever reason, we don't come together. I need to
- 18:21Speaker 1: be you know, prepared. Um. But something like this, if
- 18:26Speaker 1: I was only going by myself, I might consider just
- 18:29Speaker 1: not bringing my you know, mountain hunting boots and just
- 18:32Speaker 1: be going in myself. But no one that once you
- 18:33Speaker 1: get way back in there, you might hook up and
- 18:36Speaker 1: exactly put some on the llamas. Yeah, so I don't
- 18:38Speaker 1: have to carry quite as much food in because he's
- 18:40Speaker 1: already carried some food in. Obviously the lamas well, if
- 18:42Speaker 1: we kill, they'll be packing meat out. So I wanted
- 18:45Speaker 1: to carry as much out. So if I was doing
- 18:47Speaker 1: if I was in your situation, depending on the weather,
- 18:51Speaker 1: I would be running, I would be running. Uh my
- 18:55Speaker 1: snais barre tooths. And if it was really cold, I'd
- 18:58Speaker 1: bring my little down boot, my little down it's like
- 19:01Speaker 1: kind of like a sock, kind of like a thing
- 19:04Speaker 1: for at night if you want to like stretch out,
- 19:06Speaker 1: but this time year, I would never bother with it,
- 19:08Speaker 1: right Yeah. And then a Marino wool T shirt mm hmm.
- 19:16Speaker 1: So this is all for your so just for like
- 19:19Speaker 1: one's body on a mixed climate hunt, a base layer
- 19:24Speaker 1: T shirt, base layer long sleep that's right, which is
- 19:30Speaker 1: gonna be the Choma hoodie from First Light and no
- 19:34Speaker 1: beanie cap because that's something has a hood. Yeah. Not
- 19:38Speaker 1: only that, but I'm also gonna have my from my installation,
- 19:42Speaker 1: I'm gonna have my And this is something I wanted
- 19:43Speaker 1: to discuss and talk about because over the and again,
- 19:46Speaker 1: we get so much experience by shooting the show that
- 19:50Speaker 1: we get to try a lot of things and really think.
- 19:52Speaker 1: You know, when you're just on long hikes back to camp,
- 19:54Speaker 1: you're thinking about, Okay, you know my beanies in my pocket.
- 19:58Speaker 1: I haven't worn it for two days, and I realized
- 20:00Speaker 1: that I was having a lot to me where I'm
- 20:02Speaker 1: just like, because sometimes you get that like ear ache,
- 20:05Speaker 1: you don't even wearing a beanie too long, and uh yeah,
- 20:09Speaker 1: I just wasn't using it because like like a lot
- 20:12Speaker 1: of our gear has hoods on it, right, So between
- 20:14Speaker 1: like the wool hoodie on the Choma hoodie, then the
- 20:18Speaker 1: uncome progrede jacket which has the insulated hood, and then
- 20:21Speaker 1: a rain jacket which has a hood. I figured, in
- 20:24Speaker 1: some pretty darn right shitty cold conditions, if I put
- 20:27Speaker 1: those three hoods on, I'm gonna be pretty comfortable. And
- 20:30Speaker 1: I know that the beanie is it's ounces right, it's
- 20:32Speaker 1: probably a quarter pound, but yeah, I'm leaving it, you
- 20:38Speaker 1: know what. I flirt back and forth with his running
- 20:40Speaker 1: what I call the Remy Warren, which is a baseball
- 20:43Speaker 1: hat and then you just put the beanie over it. Yeah,
- 20:47Speaker 1: because Remmy like has a trick where he doesn't always
- 20:51Speaker 1: run a tripod with his binys, but he's got like
- 20:56Speaker 1: like the Remy Warren. The move that I called the
- 20:58Speaker 1: Remmy Warren is a three part move. Once insulation move.
- 21:00Speaker 1: You always have a baseball cap on and you pull
- 21:03Speaker 1: a large beanie over that to keep warm. But then
- 21:07Speaker 1: when he's running his body, when he's using his binos,
- 21:09Speaker 1: he holds his hands around his binos and grabs the
- 21:13Speaker 1: bill of his hat. And I's if your hats tight
- 21:17Speaker 1: and you're grabbing your binos and the bill of your hat,
- 21:19Speaker 1: it works good. It's stabilized. And I think he also
- 21:22Speaker 1: he carries a hike and poll a lot and he
- 21:24Speaker 1: and uses that stable too, But like, I can't do that.
- 21:28Speaker 1: But it's also kind of uncomfortable. Yeah could the ball cap. Yeah,
- 21:36Speaker 1: beanie combo And for a long time, I wear like
- 21:39Speaker 1: a lot of times I wear like that first light
- 21:41Speaker 1: brand beanie. But that's not rigid. That's not like a
- 21:44Speaker 1: rigid set up for stabilizing binos. No, that wouldn't work
- 21:47Speaker 1: for that. Um, I feel like the only the real
- 21:51Speaker 1: the one thing you're getting from a baseball hat, right
- 21:54Speaker 1: is basically shade for your eyes, some some protection for
- 21:58Speaker 1: your eyes, which is crucial. You gotta have something that
- 22:00Speaker 1: provides you that. But the fact that most baseball hats
- 22:05Speaker 1: are cotton, I feel like it's a pretty big They
- 22:09Speaker 1: make them all out of goofy ship. Well yeah, I
- 22:11Speaker 1: mean now they have like technical fabric baseball hat shouldn't
- 22:15Speaker 1: say all, but yeah, there's a lot of bad material
- 22:17Speaker 1: baseball hats out of there, the mesh stuff that chafes
- 22:20Speaker 1: your ears. The Yeah, but I think since we're on hats,
- 22:27Speaker 1: I'm also not bringing a baseball hat. I'm going with
- 22:31Speaker 1: a It's like a lightweight, breathable. It's a booney hat,
- 22:35Speaker 1: is what you call it, right, It's like a bucket
- 22:37Speaker 1: with a I don't know, it's probably like a three
- 22:39Speaker 1: inch brand that goes all the way around. Yeah, very lightweight,
- 22:44Speaker 1: very pacable. Uh would dry super fast, but it goes
- 22:48Speaker 1: all the way around. And I've noticed, especially when we're
- 22:50Speaker 1: sitting around in the sun glassing, it's nice to have
- 22:54Speaker 1: that protection not only on over your face and your eyes,
- 22:58Speaker 1: but now my ears are covered part you know, hopefully
- 23:01Speaker 1: at least part of the back of my neck is covered. Um,
- 23:05Speaker 1: and for me it's more comfortable. Yeah, I've never been
- 23:07Speaker 1: in the head guy. I don't like the feeling of
- 23:09Speaker 1: that back brim rubbing against my backpack. I don't like
- 23:11Speaker 1: when I'm leaning against stuff having that thing. Yeah, I
- 23:14Speaker 1: would like him, But you gotta pat you gotta patta
- 23:16Speaker 1: Gucci boony hat and again I'm I got such a
- 23:21Speaker 1: love hate with that organization, right, Yeah, I love a
- 23:24Speaker 1: lot of you. Anyhow, So Yanni's got on base Layer.
- 23:30Speaker 1: So so you got your base Layer T shirt basically
- 23:32Speaker 1: their long sleep in this case a Chama hoodie with
- 23:35Speaker 1: a hoodie in place. You don't need to wear a beanie.
- 23:37Speaker 1: Then a third layer is you got a Halstead fleece,
- 23:41Speaker 1: which is a flea shirt quarters hip quarters hip flee shirt,
- 23:46Speaker 1: and that'll cover you for like unless it's raining out.
- 23:48Speaker 1: That covers you for a real wide array of temperatures exactly. Yeah,
- 23:54Speaker 1: especially with the fact that you can, you know, the
- 23:55Speaker 1: Choma and the Hallstead fleece, you can zip them down
- 23:59Speaker 1: to like just stirring them or even a little bit
- 24:01Speaker 1: lower really opens it up. And let's you get a
- 24:04Speaker 1: lot of heat out, you know, if you need to
- 24:05Speaker 1: dump some heat. Oh yeah, I find when I'm going
- 24:07Speaker 1: up a hill and you got that on, I think
- 24:09Speaker 1: this rolling my sleeves up to my elbows and then
- 24:12Speaker 1: unzipping those couple of zippers. It makes a huge difference
- 24:15Speaker 1: rather than stopping taking all that garbage off, you know. Yeah.
- 24:18Speaker 1: And another thing with the hood and you know, and
- 24:20Speaker 1: not having the hat. It's when I'm climbing up that
- 24:22Speaker 1: hill and you're trying to dump that heat, just ripping
- 24:24Speaker 1: that hood off, you know, on covering your head. There's
- 24:27Speaker 1: no better way than to dump heat that everything off
- 24:31Speaker 1: your head. Takes a big deep breath. And then the
- 24:34Speaker 1: ubsidian field pants which are like not that synthetic e stuff, No, no, no,
- 24:38Speaker 1: They're made out of same material as the cannabs were. Um,
- 24:41Speaker 1: they just have a few extra technical pockets on them
- 24:44Speaker 1: around the legs. Um, they don't that Like the cannap
- 24:48Speaker 1: kind of has that cargoy pocket that sticks out a
- 24:51Speaker 1: little bit more taser, a little bit sleep from off
- 24:54Speaker 1: the side. The Cannap's got the pocket that kind of
- 24:56Speaker 1: sits up front. I've always liked them. I liked those pants. Yeah,
- 25:01Speaker 1: a lot, but um, so, yeah, it's a marino wool
- 25:05Speaker 1: with like uh like a rip stop material in them
- 25:08Speaker 1: m and then a couple like the crotch, the inside
- 25:12Speaker 1: of the uh bottom of the pant legs where your
- 25:15Speaker 1: feet can rub together. There's a little patch of synthetic
- 25:18Speaker 1: material to give the pants a little bit of stretching
- 25:21Speaker 1: a little bit, you know, wear resistance in the highway areas.
- 25:24Speaker 1: And those pants are good for again huge temperature ranges. Yes,
- 25:31Speaker 1: like running some lj's with him, you're good for like
- 25:34Speaker 1: in the freezing below freezing mark. Yeah. I think where
- 25:37Speaker 1: a lot of people mess up is they start to
- 25:39Speaker 1: think about um and I did it for a long
- 25:41Speaker 1: time and I actually learned this from skiing. When we
- 25:44Speaker 1: sell ski clothes is we advise people to, hey, when
- 25:48Speaker 1: you're in the lift line at eight o'clock in the morning,
- 25:52Speaker 1: start cold. Yeah. Right, It's the same thing when you're
- 25:56Speaker 1: like at your tent eating breakfast, It's okay be a
- 26:00Speaker 1: little bit cold. Like especially elk hunting. It doesn't take
- 26:03Speaker 1: but a hundred yards and like that's the tempionshure you're
- 26:06Speaker 1: gonna be working with, you know, and your body temp
- 26:08Speaker 1: that you're gonna be working with for most of the day, right,
- 26:10Speaker 1: So start cold, start a little bit uncomfortable, and don't
- 26:14Speaker 1: bring that extra layer of clothing, the big down jacket,
- 26:17Speaker 1: just so you can have your coffee comfortably, you know. Yeah,
- 26:21Speaker 1: I think people uh too, you know, in place of
- 26:24Speaker 1: the down jacket, if you think about it, you could
- 26:27Speaker 1: just stay in you're sleeping bag a little bit longer,
- 26:29Speaker 1: eat your breakfast, and you're sleeping bag, then get out,
- 26:31Speaker 1: get dressed, and go. Well, we've done in the past too, too,
- 26:34Speaker 1: because you already you know, you've got your sleeping bag
- 26:36Speaker 1: with you. Yeah, I've spent a lot of time on
- 26:39Speaker 1: glass and tits in my sleeping bag, you know, whether
- 26:43Speaker 1: like the weather, depending if it's just like cold and
- 26:45Speaker 1: windy and just kind of miserable all oftentimes hop in
- 26:48Speaker 1: my sleeping bag when I'm just posted up somewhere watching,
- 26:52Speaker 1: I'll just do that to stay warm. Or like you said,
- 26:54Speaker 1: let's keep your sleeping bag wrapped around you and eat
- 26:56Speaker 1: your breakfast and then if you're carrying around a giant
- 27:00Speaker 1: puffy like a giant down pants and down jacket for
- 27:03Speaker 1: those like moments in camp, save that and just use
- 27:06Speaker 1: your sleeping bag as an insulation layer instead of having
- 27:09Speaker 1: all the more garbage with you. But at the same time,
- 27:12Speaker 1: you can be super careful that you don't get your
- 27:14Speaker 1: sleeping bag wet, you know, even you know it's like
- 27:17Speaker 1: you know, down, a wet down bag is a real
- 27:20Speaker 1: bad a wet synthetic bag. You still got good insulation,
- 27:23Speaker 1: but it's just uncomfortable. It doesn't work as good and
- 27:26Speaker 1: it's uncomfortable. So you gotta like keep your bag dry,
- 27:30Speaker 1: but it is. It's gotta be really extremely cold before
- 27:34Speaker 1: I start bringing uh, like down like down jackets and
- 27:40Speaker 1: down pants and stuff with me. I mean, like way cold.
- 27:46Speaker 1: So we got two pants, a couple of accessories that
- 27:48Speaker 1: I have. I won't even I won't be wearing them,
- 27:50Speaker 1: but I at least have them in my pockets at
- 27:52Speaker 1: all the times. And it will be a pair of
- 27:54Speaker 1: like work glove style of gloves and then um a
- 27:57Speaker 1: Marino linery glove and the line of glove is probably
- 28:01Speaker 1: more for like a um you know, just to kind
- 28:04Speaker 1: of take the chill off. Or if I feel like
- 28:06Speaker 1: I'm getting really close and I just want to cover
- 28:09Speaker 1: up the shine the sheen in my hands, you know,
- 28:12Speaker 1: something to do that. Um, So just practice shooting in
- 28:15Speaker 1: those gloves, then yeah, I haven't done a way different
- 28:18Speaker 1: feetle Man. That's a good thing we should talk about
- 28:20Speaker 1: because in general I didn't shoot enough with sort of
- 28:23Speaker 1: like like I'm always wearing my bino harness. I never
- 28:26Speaker 1: shoot without my bino harness on and my range finder. Um,
- 28:29Speaker 1: I try to like wear the hat that I'm gonna
- 28:31Speaker 1: be shooting in. But over the last week, like a
- 28:33Speaker 1: few days prior to lead on this last trip, and
- 28:35Speaker 1: then the last couple of days, I started putting on
- 28:38Speaker 1: like a twenty pound pack with my forty four on
- 28:41Speaker 1: my side, bear spray on my side, you know, the
- 28:43Speaker 1: GPS hanging off of me, wearing the shoes I'm gonna
- 28:46Speaker 1: be hunting in, and just really you know, zipping up,
- 28:49Speaker 1: like doing things like uh, putting a hoodie on and
- 28:52Speaker 1: zipping it all the way up and then shooting. That
- 28:54Speaker 1: feels a lot different, Like I have a kisser button
- 28:56Speaker 1: on my string now, and when I have a hoodie
- 28:58Speaker 1: on a lot of times that kisser button wasn't hit anymore,
- 29:01Speaker 1: you know, just that little bit of extra material. It
- 29:04Speaker 1: feels a little bit different. But I've shot enough to
- 29:06Speaker 1: know that, you know, at fifty yards even if I'm
- 29:09Speaker 1: not feeling that kisser button. As long as I'm you know,
- 29:11Speaker 1: lined up through my peep and everything looks good, you know,
- 29:13Speaker 1: I'm shooting fine. But yeah, that's very important to do.
- 29:18Speaker 1: It's like all this stuff you need to be you know,
- 29:20Speaker 1: at least hopefully towards the last week before you go
- 29:23Speaker 1: on the hunt, is be shooting wearing all this stuff,
- 29:25Speaker 1: you know, especially the backpack because it feels different. You
- 29:28Speaker 1: really want to make sure that you're just not um impeding,
- 29:31Speaker 1: like the string, whether it's on the draw or the
- 29:34Speaker 1: shot itself. You're talking about buying the harts or bulky sleeves, right, yeah, yeah,
- 29:40Speaker 1: experiment with it all. Uh so that's why you're wearing
- 29:44Speaker 1: the Marino liner gloves. And then you got like a
- 29:46Speaker 1: pair of like a pair of hybrid shale gloves which
- 29:48Speaker 1: are kind of like a not not kind of like
- 29:52Speaker 1: it had like work glove elements to them. Yeah, heavy
- 29:55Speaker 1: duty leather palm, you know, breathable back, breathable will back. Yeah, good,
- 30:01Speaker 1: like pretty versatile glove. And then I always use one
- 30:05Speaker 1: to net gator. I love those things. Yeah, I like
- 30:08Speaker 1: items that have I As I was building this list,
- 30:10Speaker 1: I was thinking about how many items I have that
- 30:13Speaker 1: have like our multi purpose And I was thinking, you
- 30:16Speaker 1: know what that net gator if if I just fell,
- 30:19Speaker 1: I'm like, all right, I want to be wearing a beanie.
- 30:21Speaker 1: You can wear that thing like a beanie, and sure
- 30:23Speaker 1: there's a hole on the top of it, but you
- 30:25Speaker 1: do it. Sometimes you get on your all kinds of things.
- 30:28Speaker 1: So I use it for its intended purpose as like
- 30:32Speaker 1: a warmth device. I use it so you're not burned
- 30:36Speaker 1: in the back of your neck, because amazing how many times,
- 30:39Speaker 1: like you can burn your neck five times a year, right,
- 30:42Speaker 1: Like it doesn't get you know what I mean, Just
- 30:45Speaker 1: like it doesn't like tan up, kind of like how
- 30:47Speaker 1: your lower arms do or you just like eventually it's
- 30:49Speaker 1: become like impervious to burn. So you can even be out.
- 30:52Speaker 1: You can even be out in October and like bake
- 30:54Speaker 1: your neck all over again or your ears. So I'll
- 30:57Speaker 1: just use it like that, um wan't a warmth sun protection.
- 31:02Speaker 1: Sometimes I put it up on my hat when I
- 31:04Speaker 1: get like when your hat just gets uncomfortable, I put
- 31:06Speaker 1: that thing on for a while. And then the main
- 31:08Speaker 1: thing I use it for is especially hunting in Alaska
- 31:12Speaker 1: in the early season when you have so when you
- 31:14Speaker 1: have like twenty hours a daylight or eighteen hours a daylight,
- 31:17Speaker 1: I'll use it over my eyes to sleep and for
- 31:20Speaker 1: nappy time too. So I'll just take that netgator and
- 31:23Speaker 1: it's I just kind of folded up and wear it
- 31:24Speaker 1: like a I peace and allows me to It allows
- 31:27Speaker 1: me to conk out and sleep good. And then I
- 31:29Speaker 1: do it enough where if I wake up and it's
- 31:31Speaker 1: kind of like an emergency situation in the middle of
- 31:33Speaker 1: the night or whatever, I'm not like confused by like
- 31:34Speaker 1: I just noticed, like lift it up, you know, um,
- 31:38Speaker 1: and it really helps me get uh, helps get those
- 31:41Speaker 1: twenty minute and absent and it helps at night, especially
- 31:43Speaker 1: if you're in the area when like this time you're
- 31:45Speaker 1: in Alaska, you have these very prolonged periods of like
- 31:48Speaker 1: kind of duskiness, it can be hard to sleep. So
- 31:50Speaker 1: I was like to block my eyes so I can sleep. Yeah,
- 31:53Speaker 1: So I use it for all that. And it's not
- 31:55Speaker 1: uncomfortable to have on because it doesn't add a lot
- 31:57Speaker 1: of heat to you when you just get running around
- 31:59Speaker 1: your eyes. Yeah. But I think like within these lightweight
- 32:02Speaker 1: Marino net gators, the weight to like gain ratio yeah,
- 32:08Speaker 1: there's almost no weight and what you're getting out of
- 32:10Speaker 1: that as a piece of warmth. I've had two instances
- 32:13Speaker 1: that I can think of in my head where I
- 32:15Speaker 1: was like in like a very cold stain and it's
- 32:19Speaker 1: like a like a very important part of the hunt
- 32:22Speaker 1: where there's like animals nearby, or I'm having to like
- 32:24Speaker 1: glass it's like sea where an animals going, but like
- 32:27Speaker 1: you don't want to, like you need to be staying there,
- 32:29Speaker 1: but you're like very cold, like shavering cold, like it's coming.
- 32:32Speaker 1: And I've remembered I've had these gators in my pocket.
- 32:35Speaker 1: Put them on and put that on your neck, and
- 32:37Speaker 1: I think it's almost like putting a beanie on, like
- 32:39Speaker 1: just insulating your neck, keeping that blood flow, you know,
- 32:42Speaker 1: warm as it's going to your head and back. Huge
- 32:47Speaker 1: Also the main one I wear, I got a hole.
- 32:49Speaker 1: I cut in one part of it. So when I'm
- 32:52Speaker 1: turkey hunting, smoker, no mouth calls, so the whole you
- 32:56Speaker 1: never even noticed there. It's a really small hole there
- 32:58Speaker 1: as you keep it in the back. But when I
- 33:01Speaker 1: spin that thing around and pulled up, like if I'm
- 33:03Speaker 1: hunting turkeys, when I got when I'm trying to like
- 33:06Speaker 1: work a bird all the times. Just pull that net
- 33:09Speaker 1: gator up over my nose for a camouflage. And I
- 33:13Speaker 1: got a little hole cup, so I just swing that
- 33:14Speaker 1: hole around over my mouth and I can take diaphragm
- 33:16Speaker 1: calls in and out of my mouth or blow calls, whatever,
- 33:19Speaker 1: and put up in that hole and use it and
- 33:21Speaker 1: the when I'm done, I just dropped the thing back
- 33:23Speaker 1: down to my neck and spin it around. But fishermen
- 33:26Speaker 1: wear the same thing though the buffs. Yeah, since it's
- 33:30Speaker 1: a it's a synthetic material. But they were the same thing.
- 33:33Speaker 1: Now because people are realizing you shouldn't just be like
- 33:35Speaker 1: scorching your skin all the time. Yeah, sounds screen or not. Yeah,
- 33:39Speaker 1: So pull that thing up to block your ears. It's
- 33:41Speaker 1: so great. It's like a thing that not many people use.
- 33:43Speaker 1: But it's like a real gem of a of an item.
- 33:47Speaker 1: And you're not running any gators. No, I wouldn't either.
- 33:50Speaker 1: Net are what it's it's for. That kind of stuff
- 33:53Speaker 1: is too loud. Yeah, Usually gators for me are like
- 33:56Speaker 1: a deep stone. When I say, you know, I find
- 34:01Speaker 1: no I'm gonna encounter six plus inches, I'll probably put
- 34:05Speaker 1: on gators. Or if you're in an area. It's just
- 34:06Speaker 1: like like tons of creek crosses or lots of like
- 34:11Speaker 1: mucky hell holes and stuff. Pretty nice for that reason,
- 34:13Speaker 1: because when your pants are all wet on the bottoms,
- 34:17Speaker 1: it just gets annoying. And if you want to climb
- 34:19Speaker 1: into your sleeping bag, you got all that extra water.
- 34:22Speaker 1: So when you do it, like in wet snow, when
- 34:23Speaker 1: it's all just caked in, it's nice to take that
- 34:25Speaker 1: off and have dry lower legs and just slipping your
- 34:27Speaker 1: sleeping bag and night not to worry about taking your
- 34:29Speaker 1: pants off. And that's a good point to bring up
- 34:31Speaker 1: to something I'm gonna start doing is if I'm because
- 34:35Speaker 1: I'm just gonna have rain pants. Right, So if we
- 34:37Speaker 1: do have like a super dewey morning, or if we
- 34:38Speaker 1: get that six inches of wet shitty snow that you
- 34:41Speaker 1: were talking about, when I'm put on my rain pants,
- 34:44Speaker 1: I'm gonna go out into very wet conditions, I'm gonna
- 34:46Speaker 1: make sure that my pants are rolled up, tucked up,
- 34:51Speaker 1: the pants underneath my rainpants somehow, because I feel like
- 34:53Speaker 1: what happens is that that moisture like hits your cough
- 34:57Speaker 1: like you're talking about, and it just it just it
- 35:00Speaker 1: us to travel. Yeah, it wakes up and so then
- 35:02Speaker 1: it goes to your socks and your socks wicket and
- 35:05Speaker 1: all of a sudden that you know, even though you're
- 35:06Speaker 1: completely covered, that moisture is like going up your pants
- 35:10Speaker 1: to your socks and then down into yours. I never
- 35:13Speaker 1: enjoy having gators on, Like when I put gators on,
- 35:17Speaker 1: I'm I'm I'm only I'm playing the long game, right,
- 35:20Speaker 1: Like I'm always annoyed by them, you know, I'm annoyed
- 35:23Speaker 1: by where they feel. I'm annoyed by the noise. But
- 35:25Speaker 1: in certain situations, it's so nice to pull them off
- 35:29Speaker 1: and have your legs dry from the knee down when
- 35:31Speaker 1: they would otherwise be full of mud, snow or whatever.
- 35:35Speaker 1: So I tend to carry him more when I put
- 35:37Speaker 1: them on. And it's one of those things like at
- 35:39Speaker 1: the last minute, like I'm going somewhere, I got my
- 35:43Speaker 1: duffel and my gators are in it. At the last minute,
- 35:46Speaker 1: I'll oftentimes leave them in my duffle and they don't
- 35:50Speaker 1: make the final like I can't trim them out in
- 35:53Speaker 1: my garage, right, Like I can't cull it in my garage,
- 35:57Speaker 1: but cull it at the last minute before loading my pack,
- 36:01Speaker 1: I look at him like really, and then a lot
- 36:03Speaker 1: of times I'm like, no, yeah, it might be something
- 36:06Speaker 1: that I have in the truck to that would be
- 36:08Speaker 1: it would be good, it'd be smart. I mean, I
- 36:09Speaker 1: know that what the weather is coming up, right, I've
- 36:11Speaker 1: got like a couple of sunny days and then we
- 36:13Speaker 1: have some rain days and there's actually another forecast in
- 36:16Speaker 1: a snow day. Not a lot of accumulation, but there's
- 36:18Speaker 1: definitely gonna be some moisture. Um. But yeah, if I
- 36:22Speaker 1: knew that I had to hike in whatever to three
- 36:25Speaker 1: hours and I'm looking at doing that through four or
- 36:29Speaker 1: five six inches of snow, probably worth it. Even if
- 36:33Speaker 1: it was a couple inches snow, it might be worth
- 36:34Speaker 1: to put them on just for the long game. Uh.
- 36:38Speaker 1: All right, So in your so your pack, you gotta pack.
- 36:42Speaker 1: This will give you a sense like this sounds like
- 36:43Speaker 1: a lot of stuff that we're gonna be talking about,
- 36:45Speaker 1: but it's not. Because you got a thirty pack. Explain
- 36:50Speaker 1: that whole deal. Yeah, it's the same pack I used
- 36:52Speaker 1: last year, and I know I know it works for
- 36:54Speaker 1: this so um, the pack is a stone Glacier solo thirty.
- 37:00Speaker 1: I believe it's the name and UM, so it's thirty inches. Um,
- 37:05Speaker 1: it's slim, trim, tidy. UM. The pack itself only has
- 37:10Speaker 1: one pocket built into it, and then you can accustomize
- 37:14Speaker 1: it by adding their little pullout pockets that come in
- 37:16Speaker 1: different sizes. So there's a little attachment points, like on
- 37:19Speaker 1: the back side of the UM it opens like a
- 37:22Speaker 1: clam shell and uh, on the back side of that,
- 37:25Speaker 1: there's a couple attachment points and then UM on the
- 37:29Speaker 1: what would be like the faces your back the back
- 37:32Speaker 1: panel on the inside, there's a couple attachment points to
- 37:35Speaker 1: for these super lightweight UM what would be the fabric, Oh,
- 37:42Speaker 1: the little nylon pockets, yes, right, and um yeah, ultra lightweight.
- 37:48Speaker 1: You know, it just gives you a little bit of organization, um,
- 37:52Speaker 1: but for a couple of little like loose things. And
- 37:54Speaker 1: we'll talk about that later. But anyways, yeah, it's not big. UM.
- 38:00Speaker 1: The way I can do all this is that the
- 38:01Speaker 1: all my gear will fit into the pack itself and
- 38:05Speaker 1: then they have that system, the load shelf system with
- 38:08Speaker 1: their UM dry cell bag that fits in that in
- 38:14Speaker 1: the load shelf which basically fits between the pack and
- 38:17Speaker 1: the frame. Right, so as it's like a little bag
- 38:19Speaker 1: it's not quite like a dry it's not like a
- 38:21Speaker 1: submersible dry bag. But it's like yeah, I think the
- 38:25Speaker 1: only reason it's not submersible is because they seems aren't
- 38:28Speaker 1: taped right, so there is some breathing. Definitely a rainproof yeah,
- 38:34Speaker 1: like a like a rainproof bag, but not like a
- 38:36Speaker 1: rubber not like we're not talking like what I'm trying
- 38:38Speaker 1: to say. It's not like a rubberized dry bag. No, no, no,
- 38:40Speaker 1: it's light. It's like pack it's like pac material with
- 38:42Speaker 1: a roll top. So what I'll do is on the
- 38:45Speaker 1: way in, all my food will go into this um
- 38:50Speaker 1: dry cell bag between my backpack and the frame, and um,
- 38:56Speaker 1: I'll pack it in. And it's nice about that is
- 38:58Speaker 1: as soon as I get to camp, just grab my pecord,
- 39:01Speaker 1: pull it up into the tree and it will act
- 39:03Speaker 1: as my bare bag, you know, for the hanging food
- 39:07Speaker 1: until you know, hopefully we get a kill and we
- 39:09Speaker 1: have to use it to pack meat out. Um. So
- 39:11Speaker 1: once I do that, also probably if we're you know hunting,
- 39:15Speaker 1: like if we're gonna be coming back to camp, you know,
- 39:18Speaker 1: I'll dump all my camp gear, my cooking stuff and whatever,
- 39:22Speaker 1: and then that thirt it cinches down so nicely that
- 39:26Speaker 1: all of a sudden you go from you know, basically
- 39:27Speaker 1: carrying in a whole camp and you sent you down
- 39:30Speaker 1: to where it looks like a kid's you know, school
- 39:34Speaker 1: day pack. That's the thing about that, That's the key
- 39:36Speaker 1: about these packs. It's like if you're ever trailing a
- 39:40Speaker 1: bunch of elk through timber. Let's say you're trailing you
- 39:43Speaker 1: got like five six elk going down through timber, and
- 39:45Speaker 1: you notice that one of those elk keeps peeling off
- 39:48Speaker 1: away from the group and then coming back into the
- 39:51Speaker 1: group and peeling off away from the group. That's a
- 39:53Speaker 1: lot of times a bowl who knows his antlers can't
- 39:56Speaker 1: fit through the gaps in the trees, so all the
- 39:58Speaker 1: cows can go screaming down, and he's always like playing
- 40:01Speaker 1: in the head about where he can actually go and
- 40:02Speaker 1: not go with a rack that's like the widest part
- 40:05Speaker 1: of his body. I've used a lot of packs. There's
- 40:08Speaker 1: like a lot of packs I like, but a problem
- 40:10Speaker 1: with pack like I don't like a pack for for
- 40:14Speaker 1: unless I'm hunting like open open country. I don't like
- 40:18Speaker 1: a pack where the pack is any wider than I am,
- 40:21Speaker 1: because you just never unlike a bull elk. You never
- 40:24Speaker 1: get used to having things on you that are wider
- 40:27Speaker 1: than what you're used to. It's so you wind up
- 40:30Speaker 1: making a lot of unintended noise going underlogs through stuff,
- 40:34Speaker 1: and you're just banging that thing all the time, not
- 40:35Speaker 1: just banging it, but hanging it up. And these packs
- 40:38Speaker 1: are actually like if you got a dude, like like
- 40:41Speaker 1: the way the stone Glacier packs are if a guy's
- 40:43Speaker 1: wearing when looking at you, you don't see the pack
- 40:46Speaker 1: when it's snugged up, but you don't see the pack
- 40:48Speaker 1: bulging out in weird angles. No, not at all. So
- 40:50Speaker 1: it allows you to kind of move through without having
- 40:52Speaker 1: to constantly be like remembering what the hell is going
- 40:55Speaker 1: on in your backpack. And like this pack, like I said,
- 40:58Speaker 1: there's only one pocket there. There's no lid, um, so
- 41:01Speaker 1: there's nothing flopping once you set you down. It's just
- 41:05Speaker 1: slim trim. Nothing's gonna snag. Um, there's just there is
- 41:09Speaker 1: nothing to snag. There's there's there's like there's a lot
- 41:13Speaker 1: of good packs. No pack is absolutely perfect, um, but
- 41:18Speaker 1: I do like these freaking packs a lot, man. Uh.
- 41:21Speaker 1: But yeah, the pocket thing when it's all snugged up
- 41:25Speaker 1: you like, you love looking at how tidy it is,
- 41:27Speaker 1: you know, But it's like this like trade offs. You
- 41:29Speaker 1: put these big sleeve pockets on the outside everything, and
- 41:32Speaker 1: just you get like a bulkier pack. It's more stuff
- 41:35Speaker 1: floppy and hanging. That seems like you're organized, But again
- 41:38Speaker 1: the tradeoff is when it's all loaded up, like how
- 41:41Speaker 1: tight and confined and quiet is that thing? I remember
- 41:43Speaker 1: reading a book about the LRPS and Vietnam, the Long
- 41:45Speaker 1: Range of Connaissance Patrollers, and it would say that before
- 41:48Speaker 1: they would go out, they would load all their gear
- 41:51Speaker 1: on and then jump and you would keep jumping, and
- 41:55Speaker 1: then they would use electric tape to to tighten things
- 41:57Speaker 1: up and keep things so they didn't rattle or bang.
- 42:00Speaker 1: They would keep jumping until they could jump and make
- 42:01Speaker 1: no noise. And with a pack, with these kind of packs,
- 42:06Speaker 1: once you snug them down, you can achieve that like
- 42:09Speaker 1: noise free jump that you're never gonna get with a
- 42:12Speaker 1: lot of loose, floppy pockets all over the place. So
- 42:16Speaker 1: again it takes you gotta kind of rethink how you
- 42:19Speaker 1: organize your gear. If you're like a big time pockets guy,
- 42:22Speaker 1: you gotta rethink like how everything's gonna go. And the
- 42:25Speaker 1: thing I found with backpacks too is I'll use a
- 42:26Speaker 1: backpack for a couple of years and then my whole
- 42:29Speaker 1: system gets conforms to the pack. Yeah, so then when
- 42:36Speaker 1: I try a new pack, I might recognize something I
- 42:39Speaker 1: like about the new pack, but then I kind of
- 42:40Speaker 1: like dislike the pack for a minute because I gotta
- 42:42Speaker 1: redo my whole system right down. Like when I go
- 42:44Speaker 1: to brush my teeth at night, right if I've been
- 42:47Speaker 1: using the same pack for a couple of years, like
- 42:48Speaker 1: I just know like toothbrush, toothpaste or whatever within it,
- 42:51Speaker 1: here's where my Like if I've got a paper map,
- 42:53Speaker 1: where's that? Where's all my stuff? And then I get
- 42:55Speaker 1: a new pack and I get frustrated and I blame
- 42:57Speaker 1: the pack, but really it's just getting away to get
- 43:00Speaker 1: dialed in. That's why I hate, like one thing, I
- 43:02Speaker 1: hate changing around all times. I hate changing my pack
- 43:04Speaker 1: all around. When I need a new pack, I'm trying
- 43:06Speaker 1: to find a pack aroun I'm like, this is gonna
- 43:08Speaker 1: be my pack for years, and I'm gonna hunt everything
- 43:11Speaker 1: with this pack just to have it be that. I
- 43:15Speaker 1: just know where everything is, you know where it all goes.
- 43:19Speaker 1: No there's a lot of to be seven that because
- 43:20Speaker 1: it's it turns into efficiency, you know, and if that
- 43:24Speaker 1: means if it costs you that it might cost you
- 43:27Speaker 1: just thirty seconds one time when you're going to pull
- 43:29Speaker 1: out your spot and scope and your tripod, but all
- 43:32Speaker 1: of a sudden that animal walked over the ridge, you know,
- 43:34Speaker 1: and all of a sudden you all you needed was
- 43:36Speaker 1: one glimpse to be like, yes, that was a bull,
- 43:38Speaker 1: or it wasn't a bull. We're not going over there.
- 43:41Speaker 1: Yes it was, we are going over there. And yeah,
- 43:44Speaker 1: having that system dialed is there's you know, times when
- 43:47Speaker 1: it's crucial. All right, let's go over to packed clothing,
- 43:51Speaker 1: so you bring socks to put over your boots. Yeah,
- 43:54Speaker 1: that's what I'm gonna do this year because over your
- 43:57Speaker 1: mountain boots or over a mountain boots especially, probably wouldn't
- 44:00Speaker 1: need them in in stalking socks or socks, they're they're
- 44:04Speaker 1: basically just a giant pair of wool socks, like not
- 44:07Speaker 1: with a stalking pad. I'm just gonna pull them over.
- 44:10Speaker 1: Have you tried it a long time ago? Yeah, last
- 44:14Speaker 1: time I went quiet, we used those uh what do
- 44:17Speaker 1: they call it? Sneak ease I believe like a ninja bot.
- 44:21Speaker 1: It's like it's like a yeah, it's a thick fleece
- 44:24Speaker 1: kind of soul with basically just um bungee cords going
- 44:27Speaker 1: over the top of it and you put your foot
- 44:29Speaker 1: into the bungee cords since it tight. Those things. Yeah,
- 44:32Speaker 1: those things are incredibly you know, quiet soft. I just
- 44:35Speaker 1: feel like again to trade off, like it's only gonna
- 44:38Speaker 1: be used for while. I'm like, I have something like
- 44:40Speaker 1: betted and I gotta like sneak in if you were
- 44:42Speaker 1: stalking something on a gymnasium floor. Those are great, exactly.
- 44:47Speaker 1: They suck when it gets Yeah, you're on a forty
- 44:50Speaker 1: five degree pitch full of a bunch of rocks and stuff.
- 44:53Speaker 1: They are not stable. They're not stable, and it makes
- 44:57Speaker 1: a huge, huge difference. Um. We've talked about this before,
- 45:01Speaker 1: but in Arizona it's like a lot of times you're
- 45:04Speaker 1: chasing um it's down in the Unit ten where I
- 45:07Speaker 1: had this experience, but you're chasing elk across stuff that
- 45:11Speaker 1: has you know, because millions of like pebble sized rocks,
- 45:16Speaker 1: it's sort of just like rub against each other. They
- 45:18Speaker 1: look like because they look like pumics. They're a pumacy
- 45:21Speaker 1: volcanic rock. That's like hunting on corn flakes exactly. It's
- 45:25Speaker 1: like it's like the corn flake version of rocks. And
- 45:30Speaker 1: when you're in a heavy souled mountain boot, like I
- 45:34Speaker 1: think for humans it's sometimes imperceptible, but I noticed that,
- 45:37Speaker 1: Like one day I was like, you know what I'm
- 45:39Speaker 1: gonna my my feet? Is it? It was I've been
- 45:41Speaker 1: in the woods for a while and my feet were
- 45:43Speaker 1: starting to hurt. I'm like, I'm gonna go hunt in
- 45:44Speaker 1: my run issues today like some trail runners. And I
- 45:47Speaker 1: just remember like coming in on some elk and be like,
- 45:50Speaker 1: oh my gosh, like how much quieter am I right now?
- 45:53Speaker 1: Just because it was like a soft, malleable soul that
- 45:55Speaker 1: was sort of sucking up the rocks as opposed to
- 45:57Speaker 1: pushing against them. And that's saying in morning I noticed
- 46:01Speaker 1: I'm like, I think what happens out there is that
- 46:04Speaker 1: the bulls keep bugling right like that They've managed it
- 46:07Speaker 1: to the point where like it's like very hot, good
- 46:09Speaker 1: running action because it's very even like numbers like bulls
- 46:13Speaker 1: to cows. Right, they keep bugling, but as hunters are
- 46:16Speaker 1: moving around and closing the distance, the massive bugling sort
- 46:21Speaker 1: of just kind of keeps his buffer away from you.
- 46:23Speaker 1: You know, you're like, oh, the wind is good, everything's fine.
- 46:26Speaker 1: But I think there's just that like that little bit
- 46:28Speaker 1: of noise where they're like, whatever that is over there,
- 46:30Speaker 1: and it's making that walking noise. It doesn't sound like
- 46:33Speaker 1: us on the rocks. Let's just slide over a little ways,
- 46:36Speaker 1: you know. And as soon as you take that away,
- 46:39Speaker 1: whether it's by going running shoes or putting on some
- 46:41Speaker 1: sneak eas or those you know, like socks over your boots, um,
- 46:46Speaker 1: and it makes a difference what I'm thinking about trying
- 46:49Speaker 1: in the futures. I'm talking about trying my uh just minimalists.
- 46:54Speaker 1: They're actually called minimalists minimalist sneakers because there you could
- 46:59Speaker 1: walk kind of steep pitch and have a lot of agility.
- 47:02Speaker 1: It's not like running around and like like those things
- 47:05Speaker 1: that go over your boots that are unstable. It's like
- 47:07Speaker 1: walking on tussocks almost. But yeah, I might try that
- 47:11Speaker 1: in the future, or those little ninja boots, not the
- 47:13Speaker 1: bungee kinds, with a little ninja socks, you know. Yeah, No,
- 47:17Speaker 1: I think those little minimal issues would would work well
- 47:19Speaker 1: for stalking. Sure, I feel like I feel like that
- 47:22Speaker 1: might be the way to go. I'll probably bring those
- 47:24Speaker 1: down to Old Mexico and try them out because that's
- 47:26Speaker 1: a lot of that gravelly crap down there too. Um. Okay,
- 47:31Speaker 1: so you run a dry bag to keep all your
- 47:34Speaker 1: extra gear. Yeah, and again like packed clothes, going to
- 47:37Speaker 1: a dry back like a super lightweight. It's basically a
- 47:40Speaker 1: stuff sack, but it's waterproof. Um. And in there will
- 47:45Speaker 1: be an extra pair of socks, a pair of bass
- 47:48Speaker 1: layer body, one pair of one extra pair of socks,
- 47:50Speaker 1: so you have on you a total of two pairs
- 47:52Speaker 1: of socks for one week of hunting. Yeah. If I
- 47:57Speaker 1: had to, I mean if they got so crusty and crunchy,
- 48:00Speaker 1: because I feel like that's what happens after a while up.
- 48:03Speaker 1: Yeah that if I really had to, I could probably
- 48:06Speaker 1: wash them in a stream or something and hang them
- 48:08Speaker 1: up and in a day they'd be dressed. Hang them
- 48:10Speaker 1: off the back of your pack when you're hiking around, um,
- 48:14Speaker 1: and they get back nice again. Yeah. And I feel
- 48:17Speaker 1: like if you do the right things, like take them
- 48:20Speaker 1: off at night, put them into the bottom and you're
- 48:22Speaker 1: sleeping bag. So so you're sleeping back, sucking the moisture
- 48:25Speaker 1: out of them. Don't just roll them up and stick
- 48:27Speaker 1: them into your boots which have a lot of moisture
- 48:29Speaker 1: in them that you're that should be you know coming out.
- 48:31Speaker 1: Keep that whole system dry and you're gonna get longevity
- 48:35Speaker 1: out of it, you know, before those socks aret to
- 48:38Speaker 1: get slicked up, crunchy, it's like not comfortable anymore. And
- 48:41Speaker 1: then to keep mine. If you're hunting an area, you
- 48:43Speaker 1: gotta cross bad creeks, bad you know, fast slick rock creeks. Uh,
- 48:49Speaker 1: put your extra pairs, take your boots off, and don't
- 48:51Speaker 1: cross barefoot though, because you you know, you slip on
- 48:54Speaker 1: the rocks and bang your feet all up but across
- 48:57Speaker 1: in a pair wool socks and then hang them out
- 49:01Speaker 1: to dry out. But that way, you just it glues
- 49:03Speaker 1: you to the rocks. Man, It's like wearing felts old waiters. Yeah.
- 49:07Speaker 1: It protects you. Yeah, I mean unless you stay on
- 49:10Speaker 1: top of the rocks instead of having your feet slipped
- 49:11Speaker 1: down between the rocks getting all messed up. Basic layer bottoms.
- 49:18Speaker 1: Maybe yeah, I think they're gonna go because I'm looking
- 49:23Speaker 1: at the weather and it's looking like it could be cold.
- 49:25Speaker 1: Enough where I could be hunting in those like actually
- 49:28Speaker 1: wearing them. You know, I don't want to again like
- 49:30Speaker 1: you're saying, I don't want to have those clothes are
- 49:32Speaker 1: just for a few minutes or that you end up
- 49:34Speaker 1: pack them around the whole time. But I feel like
- 49:35Speaker 1: the base layer bottoms, it could be cold enough. And
- 49:38Speaker 1: what I was thinking about is if somehow, like my pants,
- 49:41Speaker 1: my regular field pants get soaking wet and I need
- 49:45Speaker 1: time to dry them out, you can wear base layer
- 49:47Speaker 1: bottoms and your rain pants, and that's a very comfortable
- 49:51Speaker 1: system to go out and do your thing in. Right.
- 49:54Speaker 1: It's not as quiet as just wearing your fueld pants,
- 49:56Speaker 1: you know, but it's um you know, to hike out
- 49:59Speaker 1: that way. You know, you can vent your rain pants
- 50:01Speaker 1: if it's getting too hot, but it's it's a comfy
- 50:04Speaker 1: way to go. And I'm old enough to now where
- 50:07Speaker 1: if I had to, i'd probably just I'd would skip
- 50:10Speaker 1: the rain pants just where you're you know, long Tom
- 50:14Speaker 1: bottoms and go hiking like a Kiwi it's on New
- 50:17Speaker 1: Zealanders hunt shorts and long John's, uh so puffy pants
- 50:23Speaker 1: like a synthetic puffey pant. If it's super cold, you'll
- 50:27Speaker 1: add a synthetic. Yeah, so I'm not bringing it on
- 50:29Speaker 1: this trip. It's just not gonna be cold enough. And
- 50:31Speaker 1: then a puffy jacket mm hmm yeah your na oh, yeah,
- 50:36Speaker 1: that's coming for sure. And then you got the boundary
- 50:39Speaker 1: storm pints, storm tight rain pants, and then the lightweight
- 50:43Speaker 1: rain jacket. It's like a light, thin layer rain jacket.
- 50:50Speaker 1: That's a risky move, but they do pack up real
- 50:53Speaker 1: nice and tight and small. Man, Oh my god. And
- 50:55Speaker 1: if you're on the fence about a rain jacket, go
- 50:59Speaker 1: with the rain. Go with like, rather than go no
- 51:01Speaker 1: rain jacket, go the lightest, little rinky dink rain jacket
- 51:04Speaker 1: you can find. Yeah, it's a bold move to go
- 51:07Speaker 1: no rain jacket for a week. Yeah, super bold. You
- 51:10Speaker 1: know you're gonna have you're gonna have to do something,
- 51:12Speaker 1: whether it's an umbrella or a tarp that you're constantly
- 51:16Speaker 1: setting up. But yeah, it's a very bold move because
- 51:19Speaker 1: all the texts is one storm and it's like sure,
- 51:21Speaker 1: you're like, oh, I'm gonna go huddle underneath the tree,
- 51:23Speaker 1: but if it blows and starts coming on their sideways,
- 51:27Speaker 1: you're gonna be miserable. And then, uh, one thing I
- 51:30Speaker 1: don't see here. You don't use a pack cover. Well
- 51:32Speaker 1: you do you you're yeah, that'll that will be in
- 51:34Speaker 1: there for sure, like a fitted like a fitted pack
- 51:37Speaker 1: cover from the manufacturer of the backpack. Um, no tent, No,
- 51:44Speaker 1: just tarping it, just tarping ten by ten tart, ten
- 51:47Speaker 1: by temp tarp. Keep in mind when you're sleeping under
- 51:49Speaker 1: the tarp if you're six ft tall, don't be like, oh,
- 51:52Speaker 1: I need a six ft tarp. You got like like
- 51:56Speaker 1: a tent by ten tart. Once you put a pitch
- 51:57Speaker 1: in it, it's still like there is not a ton
- 52:00Speaker 1: of room to be off center under that tarp if
- 52:04Speaker 1: it gets bad, if it gets bad. Yeah, And I like,
- 52:07Speaker 1: I like the whole bush craft of using the tarp.
- 52:10Speaker 1: Like I've got a couple of pitches down. I set
- 52:13Speaker 1: one up last week to cover up our meat, and um,
- 52:16Speaker 1: we had some amazing wins. I mean we definitely had
- 52:19Speaker 1: gales that were hitting I don't know, at least fifty
- 52:22Speaker 1: maybe sixty plus, and uh, what ended up happened? Is
- 52:26Speaker 1: this new This it's a Colorado I think it's called
- 52:29Speaker 1: Colorado tarp from seek outside. But it has like the
- 52:33Speaker 1: little tighteners already built in so you don't have to
- 52:36Speaker 1: run like knots that you know used tightened. And the
- 52:38Speaker 1: cord that I had was just a little bit too skinny.
- 52:41Speaker 1: It was holding just fine when it was blown thirty
- 52:43Speaker 1: and forty, but as soon as the gale hit it
- 52:46Speaker 1: with sixty, I think that the line to slipped through
- 52:50Speaker 1: the tensioner itself. You know, I had like a two
- 52:52Speaker 1: mill cord just trying to be light. I think if
- 52:55Speaker 1: I just bump up to three mill like it would
- 52:57Speaker 1: take that. But I'm not expecting that kind of wind
- 52:59Speaker 1: on this trip. You know. What I do that know
- 53:01Speaker 1: the two thoughts on when you use the tarpet ista
- 53:02Speaker 1: of tent. What I do that no one, no one
- 53:04Speaker 1: agrees with me on is I make a six inch
- 53:07Speaker 1: loop of bungee of small shot cord. On every corner
- 53:11Speaker 1: and every every guy point on the tarp, I put
- 53:15Speaker 1: a bungee in there. The reason I do that is
- 53:17Speaker 1: I'll use mine a lot. If you're perched up somewhere
- 53:21Speaker 1: glass and for the day and it starts raining or snow,
- 53:24Speaker 1: and I'll often just put my tarp up just to
- 53:25Speaker 1: give a comfortable place where you can stay dry and
- 53:27Speaker 1: warm under there. I put bungee in all my corners
- 53:30Speaker 1: because I can just wrap those bungees around little branches,
- 53:33Speaker 1: chunks of brush rocks and set it up very fast.
- 53:37Speaker 1: I'll run around trying to find stuff to tie off to.
- 53:40Speaker 1: The Other thing is when I do tie it off,
- 53:41Speaker 1: I tie to the bungee and that gives it some
- 53:44Speaker 1: You can pull it tight, but it still gives it
- 53:46Speaker 1: a little bit of flex which keeps the fabric from
- 53:48Speaker 1: giving out and tearing or other problems you might have
- 53:52Speaker 1: with trying to keep it tight and nice. And it
- 53:54Speaker 1: keeps some of that flap noise down when you got
- 53:57Speaker 1: a little bit of stretching there. So I like to
- 53:58Speaker 1: do it to turn everybody else onto it, no one,
- 54:01Speaker 1: no one else runs them, but I always put the
- 54:03Speaker 1: bungees on mine. And when you do pitch out of
- 54:05Speaker 1: tarp to sleep under, keep it low. You don't need
- 54:08Speaker 1: to have your tarp like if you're sleeping under, not
- 54:12Speaker 1: like a hangout tarper. To sleeping under tarp, you don't
- 54:14Speaker 1: need to have it way up in the air. You
- 54:16Speaker 1: should crawl into that thing like how you crawl into
- 54:19Speaker 1: a tent, because then you don't have stuff blowing in
- 54:21Speaker 1: from the sides right. Yeah. No, I think like if
- 54:25Speaker 1: if like someone else and my m me, if I
- 54:31Speaker 1: someone else under the tarp together, you probably had to
- 54:34Speaker 1: go to like an a frame a frame style pitch
- 54:37Speaker 1: right where you have a ridge running from one pole
- 54:40Speaker 1: to a tree or between two poles, um, just to
- 54:43Speaker 1: give yourself the room. But if it's just me, I'll
- 54:46Speaker 1: run what's called like a diamond pitch, and so I'll
- 54:48Speaker 1: run off of one of my tracking poles or a tree.
- 54:50Speaker 1: Is even better because you can get a little bit
- 54:52Speaker 1: higher and then basically run like a diagonal ridge from
- 54:55Speaker 1: corner to corner to the ground, and then your two
- 54:58Speaker 1: other edges just sort of like come men and conform
- 55:00Speaker 1: to the ground. So you've only got one end that's open.
- 55:04Speaker 1: And so as long as you pitch properly and don't
- 55:06Speaker 1: have that open to the wind, you know, you've got
- 55:09Speaker 1: amazing coverage and you can throw a fire, you know,
- 55:12Speaker 1: right there if you want to, and stay dry and
- 55:14Speaker 1: nice like you're always gonna be open to the elements,
- 55:17Speaker 1: you know, from some angle. Um, there actually are pitches
- 55:21Speaker 1: where I think you can completely close off of the tarp.
- 55:23Speaker 1: I've just never done it. Um. Oh yeah, there's like, yeah,
- 55:26Speaker 1: there's like if you have a huge tarp, there's the
- 55:28Speaker 1: way that you're laying on the tarp. You got a
- 55:31Speaker 1: back wall. You're laying on a little bit of the
- 55:33Speaker 1: tarp for groundcover. You got a back wall that comes up,
- 55:38Speaker 1: it goes across the lid and drops down as a
- 55:42Speaker 1: as like a wall. That's a huge tarp. But you
- 55:45Speaker 1: see an old timey books and you still have two
- 55:48Speaker 1: open ends though, wouldn't you. Yeah, still got two open ends,
- 55:50Speaker 1: but you position for the wind. Because here's the thing
- 55:52Speaker 1: people don't like when you're ringing up. Like for instance,
- 55:58Speaker 1: Alvish Mast took a picture of it when I drew
- 56:00Speaker 1: my copy River Buffalo tag years ago. I remember I
- 56:03Speaker 1: had a setup where I was sleeping under a tarp
- 56:06Speaker 1: and I was actually burning buffalo chips in a little fire.
- 56:11Speaker 1: And I remember reading about that when God, when you're
- 56:14Speaker 1: setting the tarp up and you're actually heating, you know,
- 56:16Speaker 1: you make a fire for warmth. In the old days,
- 56:18Speaker 1: you didn't make it be that you're tarp shielded the wind.
- 56:22Speaker 1: You want to draft through it so you could get
- 56:26Speaker 1: heat under there, but not trap all your smoking there. Right,
- 56:30Speaker 1: Remember getting up and thinking how much I liked it.
- 56:32Speaker 1: Looks at how I had my tarp and my buffalo
- 56:35Speaker 1: chip fire. I snapped a picture, walked over the edge
- 56:38Speaker 1: and shout of buffalo after really coming to grips with
- 56:42Speaker 1: the idea that I was not going to be getting one. Um.
- 56:46Speaker 1: But yeah, that's that's like a you know, even like
- 56:50Speaker 1: when you're reading really old ship about like old pioneers
- 56:52Speaker 1: and old explorers. I mean they used tarps all the time.
- 56:54Speaker 1: That was like their their tent material, and they got
- 56:58Speaker 1: way ways of pitching them. Um. There's a book, God,
- 57:02Speaker 1: what's that river book? River? Now you know the author? No,
- 57:14Speaker 1: but it's a guy in Canada. I can't remember. Runting book.
- 57:20Speaker 1: He they do a lot of hunting, a lot of trapping,
- 57:25Speaker 1: river deception, I can't remember. Anyways, there's a great book
- 57:28Speaker 1: where these guys, it's in the nineties and big fur
- 57:34Speaker 1: boom going on, and they're trapping and cannon and working
- 57:36Speaker 1: the rivers, trapping, and they always got to get to
- 57:39Speaker 1: their site because they're they're out in the middle of
- 57:41Speaker 1: the winter. And he describes their tarp setups. They got
- 57:45Speaker 1: a plan two hours every night to get their tarp
- 57:50Speaker 1: setups in such a way that they can survive using
- 57:54Speaker 1: not using tense but making making setting up tarps in
- 57:58Speaker 1: a way that you can burn wood to try to
- 58:00Speaker 1: keep for freezing death. And you always had to plan
- 58:02Speaker 1: on that two hour set up, and these guys weren't
- 58:06Speaker 1: run around with head lamps. Yeah, so it really cut
- 58:08Speaker 1: into your day, right, But I do like types. It's
- 58:12Speaker 1: like there's like a tidiness to it that you just
- 58:14Speaker 1: kind of like, man, yeah, and a versatility, you know.
- 58:19Speaker 1: And again you've gotta be ready for you know, it's
- 58:23Speaker 1: fine and danny when it's you know, seventy during the
- 58:25Speaker 1: day and then it's like a starry, thirty five degree
- 58:28Speaker 1: night with zero win, It's like who cares, don't even
- 58:31Speaker 1: set the tarp up. You can just like sleep out right, Um,
- 58:35Speaker 1: get your head into the hood of your sleeping bag.
- 58:37Speaker 1: But if it blows and then there's moisture coming in,
- 58:41Speaker 1: um yeah, you better like have like like some experience
- 58:46Speaker 1: and a plan. And one of the things that's gonna
- 58:48Speaker 1: that's allowing me to do this is I'm going to
- 58:51Speaker 1: use a um nemo sleeping bag that has basically like
- 58:57Speaker 1: a um like what they call like a bad sub
- 59:00Speaker 1: floor in a tent. It basically has that built into
- 59:02Speaker 1: the seating back, so you don't have to bring ground pad.
- 59:05Speaker 1: It's built in or I'm sorry, a ground sheet or
- 59:08Speaker 1: tarp that's built into the bag. And then it kind
- 59:11Speaker 1: of curves around your feet. So a lot of times,
- 59:14Speaker 1: like especially tall guy like me, you know, your feet
- 59:16Speaker 1: are sticking out at the end of whatever, or even
- 59:18Speaker 1: if you're in a tent, your feet are touching like
- 59:20Speaker 1: the tent wall, which can cause moisture to come in
- 59:22Speaker 1: and get your bag. So that sort of is protecting
- 59:26Speaker 1: me from you know, the moisture that you didn't plan for. UM.
- 59:31Speaker 1: And it's also a the sleam bag system is built
- 59:35Speaker 1: so that you can slip your pad into the sleeping bag,
- 59:39Speaker 1: so it kind of sits between the bottom insulation and
- 59:42Speaker 1: then that bathtub floor that I was talking about, the
- 59:45Speaker 1: waterproof floor UM, which is pretty slick. Keeps you on
- 59:50Speaker 1: your keeps you on your path, you don't slide off. UM.
- 59:56Speaker 1: Final thought on tarps if it's bad mosquito time, like
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: you know, yeah, you know, if you're hunting like spring
- 1:00:04Speaker 1: hunts or you're hunting late summer hunts, it just you
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: gotta plan on that too. It just doesn't give you
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: a break. No, if you got bad black flies, bad mosquitoes,
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: and you're you're going the tar. It's like sometimes when
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: it's so bad, you know, particularly Alaska in other places too,
- 1:00:18Speaker 1: it just gets so bad it's hard to like, it's
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: hard to maintain your sanity. Yeah, the bugs, and it
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: is nice to have a mesh, just something and now
- 1:00:27Speaker 1: and then get a break from that ship. When we
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: were up at Bucks, we slept out a bunch my
- 1:00:33Speaker 1: brother and I believe we're sleeping out and uh, well
- 1:00:36Speaker 1: worked pretty good now and again it had it been
- 1:00:39Speaker 1: too hot to sleep up and sleep to zip up
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: the sleeping bag, it would have sucked. But we were
- 1:00:43Speaker 1: just zipping up and then basically putting on a head
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: net and that worked. I had a had a thermo
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: cell on that trail didn't. But you still need something
- 1:00:53Speaker 1: to can do well. It depends on whendy it is. Uh,
- 1:00:55Speaker 1: here's the thing. I don't agree with you, and I
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: know you'd like to use them as you use trek
- 1:00:58Speaker 1: and polls. All again, a couple of things I need
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: him for right, UM need him to build to pitch
- 1:01:05Speaker 1: a tarp possibly using for a hiking, especially when I
- 1:01:09Speaker 1: got meat on my back I think it, you know,
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: saves your knees, saves your back, takes stress off your
- 1:01:14Speaker 1: joints um and I'm not bringing a tripod, so I'm
- 1:01:19Speaker 1: gonna use that pole for one of the poles for classing. Yeah,
- 1:01:22Speaker 1: that's a calhan does tore right, Yeah, you know. And
- 1:01:25Speaker 1: then so we already covered this. You gotta Nemo insulated pad,
- 1:01:31Speaker 1: Tensor twenty pad and a Nemo are Galli fifteen degree
- 1:01:35Speaker 1: bag no ground pad because you're sleeping bag has a
- 1:01:41Speaker 1: waterproof brain. You bring your little blow up pillow. Oh man,
- 1:01:48Speaker 1: I would not. Yeah, no, I'm not going to, but
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: I gotta say we use these. I think they're called
- 1:01:54Speaker 1: the it's called the philo. I'm guessing they took like
- 1:01:57Speaker 1: fleece and pillow and made up this word called pillow. Dude,
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: it's it's it's dream come true. Oh it's so nice.
- 1:02:04Speaker 1: But it's just like on a backpack exactly. And again
- 1:02:08Speaker 1: it's allance is. You're probably looking at, I don't know,
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: not a half a pounds. Yeah, barely. No. I think
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: when you put in the stuff sack, it's about your
- 1:02:16Speaker 1: like Steve's giant fist. It's bigger than a powerful fist. Yeah,
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: uh I love him, don't get me wrong. It's like phenomenal. Um.
- 1:02:27Speaker 1: I hate myself for getting to that point in life
- 1:02:29Speaker 1: where where I have like a little pillow, blow up
- 1:02:32Speaker 1: inflatable pillow. But in this case, I'm not that old yet. No,
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: if you have to carry around all in your it's
- 1:02:39Speaker 1: a base camp thing. Yeah, and this is what I do.
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: This is uh um how I build my pillow, and
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: which was nice to have the Nemo pillow because I
- 1:02:49Speaker 1: didn't have to spend the five minutes. Or maybe it's
- 1:02:52Speaker 1: only to building my pillow. It's just nice to get
- 1:02:54Speaker 1: in your bag and just go to bed. What I do,
- 1:02:58Speaker 1: and it works good because it's as I'm taking off
- 1:03:00Speaker 1: my layers. But basically would take my puffy jacket across
- 1:03:04Speaker 1: the arms, folded hood in and then sort of rolled
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: it up so you kind of have this like long
- 1:03:10Speaker 1: rectangular role. And then I take my next layer off,
- 1:03:14Speaker 1: which is usually my fleece, and I slide it neatly
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: into that fleece all the way up to where the
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: arms come out, like to the shoulders. I flip it
- 1:03:22Speaker 1: over and then again cross the arms or no, I'll
- 1:03:25Speaker 1: flip over the bottom of the fleece so that now
- 1:03:29Speaker 1: you've um, you know, just kind of repeated that rectangular role,
- 1:03:32Speaker 1: but the arms are still sticking out. And then I'll
- 1:03:34Speaker 1: fold your arms and put like a one overhand, not
- 1:03:37Speaker 1: trying to lay it as flat as possible, and that
- 1:03:41Speaker 1: sort of contains the puffy jacket inside, right, and it's
- 1:03:45Speaker 1: comfortable on your face because you're not sleeping on that nylon.
- 1:03:48Speaker 1: And then I'll flip it over so that the knots
- 1:03:50Speaker 1: on the bottom and then that gets kind of stucked
- 1:03:53Speaker 1: into the um the hood of my sleeping back and
- 1:03:58Speaker 1: it works fine a little making it's just like, yeah,
- 1:04:03Speaker 1: it's it's a luxury for sure to not have to
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: do that and to have your you know, bitch a
- 1:04:07Speaker 1: little back country pillow. But I'm really I'm gonna leave
- 1:04:10Speaker 1: those four ounces behind game calls, games, game call intensive hunt. Yes, definitely.
- 1:04:18Speaker 1: I mean it's one of the reason I going on
- 1:04:19Speaker 1: this hunk, because I love to you know, call elk
- 1:04:23Speaker 1: um phelps bugle to four diaphragms, and um really two
- 1:04:30Speaker 1: of them are extras probab bringing to their you know,
- 1:04:32Speaker 1: sort of softer latex you know, you know, for sweet
- 1:04:36Speaker 1: little cal calls. And then two that are double triple
- 1:04:39Speaker 1: reads that are stiffer for bugling. You know, a bugle
- 1:04:44Speaker 1: is such with you know, loud a lot of intensity
- 1:04:46Speaker 1: that even those you know, triple read diaphragms, when you've
- 1:04:49Speaker 1: been blowing on them for three or four or five
- 1:04:51Speaker 1: days a lot, if you're really bugling a lot to
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: whether it's to get responses or to get a bowl
- 1:04:56Speaker 1: fired up or whatever, they can start to soften up
- 1:04:59Speaker 1: over a while, and you know, you hate to have
- 1:05:02Speaker 1: one that starts to break or something. You know, as
- 1:05:04Speaker 1: you're bugling. So as light as the diaphragms are, you know,
- 1:05:08Speaker 1: four diaphrams weighs nothing. The call I'll probably use the
- 1:05:11Speaker 1: most over the course of a week is an external
- 1:05:15Speaker 1: read type CAL call phelps. This is called the easy
- 1:05:20Speaker 1: estrus and um. The read sits on a on a
- 1:05:24Speaker 1: board and then there's a little castration band that holds
- 1:05:28Speaker 1: the read to the board, and then there's the U
- 1:05:32Speaker 1: I guess like the tone chamber, the sound chamber that's
- 1:05:36Speaker 1: attached to that. And I love those because like you
- 1:05:40Speaker 1: can make them loud, I mean so loud that I'll
- 1:05:43Speaker 1: use them to locate bulls. Just make one or two
- 1:05:46Speaker 1: big loud cal calls like off of a point and
- 1:05:49Speaker 1: a lot of times you get a bull they answer
- 1:05:51Speaker 1: to that. Um, he's just a good American man, Phelps Jason. Yeah,
- 1:05:59Speaker 1: we like Jason. Um. And then your brother and I
- 1:06:02Speaker 1: decided to bring in a montana El decoy this year. Yeah,
- 1:06:06Speaker 1: I would probably have not brought it in. And again,
- 1:06:08Speaker 1: definitely if we weren't using if we didn't, if I
- 1:06:10Speaker 1: didn't have Lama was waiting for me at the other end,
- 1:06:12Speaker 1: because it's it's a couple of pounds maybe even a
- 1:06:14Speaker 1: couple of pounds plus um, And if I was hunting solo,
- 1:06:17Speaker 1: it's like, I'm not gonna deal with it. That's a
- 1:06:20Speaker 1: two dimensional Yes, it's basically it's it's like a printed
- 1:06:26Speaker 1: picture onto like a stretchy I don't know, pol Yes
- 1:06:30Speaker 1: or Nilon blend or something that sort of sits over
- 1:06:32Speaker 1: this frame that you can just twist down and folds
- 1:06:36Speaker 1: down into the you know, a small little twelve inch package.
- 1:06:39Speaker 1: But the steaks are what have some weight to them. Um.
- 1:06:42Speaker 1: That that's what definitely adds a weight to the decoy.
- 1:06:44Speaker 1: But your brother's you know, fired up on using it,
- 1:06:47Speaker 1: so we're gonna try it out, and you're bringing some
- 1:06:50Speaker 1: you're bringing some eight by forty vortex knockers. Yeah, I'm
- 1:06:55Speaker 1: going with the eights, tidy, little package, tidy. You know,
- 1:07:01Speaker 1: it's probably not that much lighter, if anything, then then
- 1:07:04Speaker 1: the tens I mean it's you know, it could be
- 1:07:07Speaker 1: a percentage of anounce. Maybe I don't know. I haven't
- 1:07:09Speaker 1: looked into it. But I like the larger field of view,
- 1:07:12Speaker 1: the steadiness. I feel like with you know, uh, bow hunting,
- 1:07:16Speaker 1: you're always in your like a lot of times you're
- 1:07:18Speaker 1: scanning like a hundred to two hundred yards of you know,
- 1:07:21Speaker 1: looking for elk in the timber and um using one
- 1:07:24Speaker 1: hand because you got your bow on the other hand,
- 1:07:26Speaker 1: or something bugle too in the other hand, whatever, you know.
- 1:07:29Speaker 1: But it's just like it's steadier, yeah, more to steady
- 1:07:32Speaker 1: than any else. Wider field of view. Um, And it's
- 1:07:35Speaker 1: not like you're trying to count annually on a sheep
- 1:07:37Speaker 1: or counting brow times on some moose two miles away.
- 1:07:40Speaker 1: It's just like bowl or not able, yeah exactly, or
- 1:07:43Speaker 1: where'd they go there's a patch of fur, you know,
- 1:07:45Speaker 1: their head and left. UM on that note, not bringing
- 1:07:50Speaker 1: um spotting scope or tripod and that's a huge wait
- 1:07:55Speaker 1: you know drop that's um, I'm probably looking at like
- 1:07:58Speaker 1: eight or nine pounds that I'm dropping out of the
- 1:07:59Speaker 1: kid there um for me, you know, going on this
- 1:08:03Speaker 1: archery elk hunt. I mean maybe it'll change in five
- 1:08:05Speaker 1: or ten years, but yeah, I'm not I'm not even
- 1:08:08Speaker 1: counting points. I'm like looking for a bowl and that's it.
- 1:08:12Speaker 1: So I need to just find elk, see elk moving
- 1:08:15Speaker 1: And even with eight three miles away, if I see
- 1:08:19Speaker 1: elk on the hillside and I know they're elk, you know,
- 1:08:21Speaker 1: and you keep and you keep your binyls in your
- 1:08:23Speaker 1: range finder in uh in a f HF vinyl harness
- 1:08:26Speaker 1: has got a little range finder pouch, so your range
- 1:08:29Speaker 1: finder sits right next to your range finder sits right
- 1:08:32Speaker 1: next to your binyl is easy to get at, and
- 1:08:33Speaker 1: it's got little pockets on it, so you've got some wind,
- 1:08:39Speaker 1: a little smoking a bottle wind detector. Basically, it's like
- 1:08:43Speaker 1: taking a talcoum powder and squirting it out of a
- 1:08:46Speaker 1: little bottle and shoots a little puff up near and
- 1:08:47Speaker 1: you can see what's going on now invaluable. Yeah, when
- 1:08:54Speaker 1: conditions right, it seems unnecessary right because you take your
- 1:08:56Speaker 1: boot and stir up a little dust and see what
- 1:08:58Speaker 1: it does. But oftentimes you're in a spot where you know,
- 1:09:01Speaker 1: if you're an area, it's just like pine needle whatever.
- 1:09:03Speaker 1: You can't get like a good wind detector, and bow hunting,
- 1:09:09Speaker 1: especially trying to walk like sneaking on elk man. It's
- 1:09:12Speaker 1: like the wind is the old not the only thing,
- 1:09:14Speaker 1: but the wind is like the main thing you're thinking
- 1:09:17Speaker 1: about all the time, all the time, and you gotta
- 1:09:19Speaker 1: pick your moments. It's like a mistake we used to make.
- 1:09:22Speaker 1: And this is kind of why I wish I could
- 1:09:24Speaker 1: revisit a lot of the old go back of time
- 1:09:26Speaker 1: and revisit a lot of the old hunts we used do.
- 1:09:27Speaker 1: We used to just be like too eager to rush
- 1:09:31Speaker 1: in and not like a lot of phenomenal opportunities slip
- 1:09:37Speaker 1: through our hands from not taking time to just assess
- 1:09:40Speaker 1: and be patient, wait for the thermals to switch. What
- 1:09:43Speaker 1: are the thermals doing right, and like all that kind
- 1:09:45Speaker 1: of stuff and just being like, wow, let's take our
- 1:09:46Speaker 1: chances and go. Or you get into it there and
- 1:09:50Speaker 1: the wind changes and you're like, wow, yeah, let's just
- 1:09:54Speaker 1: trust our luck. Now it's like now, and sometimes you
- 1:09:57Speaker 1: just get hold of this. Man, it's like everything's been
- 1:09:59Speaker 1: going right for two hours and then there's just one
- 1:10:02Speaker 1: gust that comes up, you back and then blows an out.
- 1:10:05Speaker 1: But it is nice to have that constant, you know.
- 1:10:08Speaker 1: I us just used dust and seed, grass seeds, anything
- 1:10:11Speaker 1: like that. But and uh, you know northering I used
- 1:10:13Speaker 1: to do, which I actually loved a lot. I had
- 1:10:16Speaker 1: done this a long time. I out and know why.
- 1:10:18Speaker 1: I used to take a bird feather. Does any feather?
- 1:10:21Speaker 1: I'd fine, And I'd take eight inches of dental floss
- 1:10:25Speaker 1: and hang it off somewhere in my bowl, want to say, spot.
- 1:10:27Speaker 1: The only thing that kind of turned me off to
- 1:10:28Speaker 1: it is you had to kind of manage it. You
- 1:10:31Speaker 1: can still get wrapped off, yeah, but man like if
- 1:10:34Speaker 1: you're going through brush and stopped between. Yeah, But it
- 1:10:36Speaker 1: used to be like now and then I just love
- 1:10:38Speaker 1: that thing because I'd had that little I'd kind of
- 1:10:40Speaker 1: like pull it out and hang it down and on
- 1:10:42Speaker 1: the limb of my bowl. I had that dental floss
- 1:10:44Speaker 1: and that bird feather. Man, you can get an accurate reading,
- 1:10:46Speaker 1: but it gets wet, it gets tangled. But when it's
- 1:10:50Speaker 1: like up and running, it was nice. It's just constant
- 1:10:53Speaker 1: information that feather has given you about what's going on. UM,
- 1:11:01Speaker 1: and you bring a little cloth for your binos. I
- 1:11:02Speaker 1: think that's pretty important. Oh it is, man, It's just
- 1:11:05Speaker 1: like it. Maybe maybe you're not seeing any less with
- 1:11:08Speaker 1: dirty glass, you know, lenses, but it just is like
- 1:11:12Speaker 1: any time I haven't done it for a couple of
- 1:11:14Speaker 1: days and you wipe them clean, You're like, oh yeah,
- 1:11:17Speaker 1: It's like if you miss a day of brush in
- 1:11:18Speaker 1: your teeth and then you brush your teeth and you
- 1:11:20Speaker 1: get that same clean, cleansed feeling. Say things looking to
- 1:11:25Speaker 1: clean binos. The boys of Vortex gave me these things.
- 1:11:27Speaker 1: I think I know they're available to in drug stores,
- 1:11:29Speaker 1: but they gave me these uh little white packets. And
- 1:11:33Speaker 1: what I like about those is when you get sunscreen
- 1:11:36Speaker 1: or something on them, it's a way to get them off.
- 1:11:38Speaker 1: I'll usually carry one of those in my kit, one
- 1:11:41Speaker 1: of those optics wet wipes for sunscreen or any kind
- 1:11:46Speaker 1: of other grease or any kind of thing that doesn't
- 1:11:48Speaker 1: want to wipe off off them, but you can usually
- 1:11:50Speaker 1: with a clean micro cloth. You usually get them clean
- 1:11:52Speaker 1: and back up and run in into normal. UM. I
- 1:11:55Speaker 1: know that I like about the little wet wipe thing
- 1:11:57Speaker 1: is when you get a lot of dust kind of
- 1:11:59Speaker 1: in the when the I cups like spin in and out,
- 1:12:03Speaker 1: you kind of use it to clean everything out and
- 1:12:05Speaker 1: keep them up and running. Um butchered kit. Yeah, I
- 1:12:11Speaker 1: wanna bring a bench made steep country. That's the ricking
- 1:12:15Speaker 1: knife man. I love that knife. Um, and that's the
- 1:12:20Speaker 1: only knife. Um. I'll be taken. No multi tool. What
- 1:12:26Speaker 1: do you got with you for if you if you
- 1:12:29Speaker 1: screw something up on your bow or need a monkey
- 1:12:30Speaker 1: with it? Do you bring a little kid? Yeah, little
- 1:12:35Speaker 1: repair kit which will basically have all any size uh
- 1:12:40Speaker 1: you know Alan screw that's on the site or you know,
- 1:12:44Speaker 1: you know any of that. It's all Alan. Yeah. But
- 1:12:46Speaker 1: but I just feel like having like a little like
- 1:12:48Speaker 1: the reason I carrying It's like how often you need
- 1:12:50Speaker 1: a little pair of needle loaves? I see, I was
- 1:12:53Speaker 1: thinking that when I was packing. I was like, not
- 1:12:55Speaker 1: that often, especially when I'm holding that big, heavy multi
- 1:13:00Speaker 1: tool in my hands. I like it because the little
- 1:13:04Speaker 1: saw I don't, and all my the the Alans tooks
- 1:13:09Speaker 1: for my stuff. I have an adapter, so all those
- 1:13:12Speaker 1: little Alan's are on my right. But no, I get it.
- 1:13:16Speaker 1: I get it. But I just oftentimes I oftentimes find
- 1:13:19Speaker 1: myself like very happy to have needing those players even
- 1:13:24Speaker 1: digging out in growing tonails and whatnot. I just use
- 1:13:26Speaker 1: all the time. Man, Well, I mean it's that's what
- 1:13:30Speaker 1: I mean. The fun part about this is, you know,
- 1:13:32Speaker 1: you go out there and if I get worked over
- 1:13:33Speaker 1: because not having my needle nose, then next time I'll
- 1:13:36Speaker 1: be packing them. Yeah, but it is. It's heavy. It's
- 1:13:38Speaker 1: a very heavy little item. Um, you got a little
- 1:13:42Speaker 1: mini sharpener which kind of you don't need because you're
- 1:13:47Speaker 1: only gonna be doing an animal. Yeah that's true to
- 1:13:53Speaker 1: you guys. Yeah, yeah, but it's so small and so
- 1:14:00Speaker 1: light that little bench made made me feel a sharpener
- 1:14:03Speaker 1: that like, I feel like it's worth it. Yeah. We
- 1:14:05Speaker 1: just said a trip where you chopped up three like
- 1:14:07Speaker 1: doing a caribou a day and the sizeable animal. You're
- 1:14:10Speaker 1: glad you got a sharpener. If you're going out and
- 1:14:12Speaker 1: just like the most you're gonna do is you're gonna
- 1:14:14Speaker 1: get like, oh animal, you're just gonna be doing a deer.
- 1:14:16Speaker 1: I don't even you know, I don't necessarily worry about
- 1:14:18Speaker 1: it because like if you got a honed up knife
- 1:14:19Speaker 1: it's gonna get you through that plus more. But it
- 1:14:22Speaker 1: is really small zip ties for what reason, They're just
- 1:14:27Speaker 1: nice to have. I mean they're in my little butcher
- 1:14:30Speaker 1: and kit section because, um, I like to put my
- 1:14:32Speaker 1: tag on with a zip tie, you know, Montana. It's
- 1:14:36Speaker 1: kind of a big carcass tag and I think it
- 1:14:39Speaker 1: comes with holes, you know, pre punched. I mean obviously
- 1:14:43Speaker 1: you could use peak ord or whatever. Um, but yeah,
- 1:14:47Speaker 1: I just like a zip tie I carry. I carry
- 1:14:49Speaker 1: a couple of zip ties in my emergency kit. Yeah. Yeah,
- 1:14:51Speaker 1: And obviously fix all sorts of stuff with the Kala.
- 1:14:55Speaker 1: They're strong. You can you can fix backpacks and stuff
- 1:14:58Speaker 1: with them. Um. And then tag game bags I used
- 1:15:03Speaker 1: to like, and I still like some aspects of Like
- 1:15:06Speaker 1: there's a copy of Laski game bags I used to
- 1:15:08Speaker 1: use all the time. It's like a disposable bag and
- 1:15:11Speaker 1: it's like a cheese cloth in material, but flies can
- 1:15:14Speaker 1: lay eggs through it. And if you drop that bag
- 1:15:17Speaker 1: in the dirt, the meat stil gets dirty. It keeps
- 1:15:19Speaker 1: out big stuff, but it doesn't keep out fine stuff.
- 1:15:22Speaker 1: But they're inexpensive, which is nice, and you just they're disposable,
- 1:15:27Speaker 1: which is like, well, it's just part of like the
- 1:15:30Speaker 1: disposable world, right, everything that just gets thrown in the
- 1:15:32Speaker 1: trash all time as a bummer. But you're not like
- 1:15:35Speaker 1: messing around trying to clean them and getting blood out
- 1:15:37Speaker 1: of game bags as a chore. So yeah, now I've
- 1:15:43Speaker 1: settled it. Not using the reusables, the tag bags. It's
- 1:15:48Speaker 1: almost like a silky kind of silky feeling and material
- 1:15:52Speaker 1: and flies can't lay eggs through it. And you can
- 1:15:55Speaker 1: bag up meat and drop it in the dust and
- 1:15:57Speaker 1: the meat doesn't get any dust on it. I think,
- 1:16:00Speaker 1: I think if you drug them through mud and like
- 1:16:04Speaker 1: we're like, you know, somehow pushing that through the material,
- 1:16:08Speaker 1: you it would eventually, like you know, it would permeate
- 1:16:11Speaker 1: and get through. But no more more protection though more
- 1:16:15Speaker 1: definitely more protection. Yeah, and reusable and um easy to
- 1:16:19Speaker 1: hang strong and then you get but you gotta come home.
- 1:16:22Speaker 1: And I to come home and take a five gallon
- 1:16:24Speaker 1: bucket make a mild bleach solution. Yeah, so come or
- 1:16:28Speaker 1: take some simple green soaked soun's a bitches a couple
- 1:16:30Speaker 1: of times, wash them in the washing machine, give him
- 1:16:33Speaker 1: the old smell test, hang them out in the sun.
- 1:16:36Speaker 1: But it's hard to deal with Yeah, yeah, definitely, because
- 1:16:40Speaker 1: you think you got it. You think you get it,
- 1:16:43Speaker 1: you think you got your pat clean, and then it
- 1:16:45Speaker 1: rains and it just reactivates that stuff and you realize
- 1:16:48Speaker 1: you didn't get it clean. I just peroxide man, eats
- 1:16:52Speaker 1: it up. Yeah, gets the blood out. That's the that's
- 1:16:55Speaker 1: the key. I don't use it on game bags, but
- 1:16:57Speaker 1: on the pack. I do it a lot. In a
- 1:16:58Speaker 1: spray bottle. Yeah works good. Oh yeah, I hear people
- 1:17:02Speaker 1: talk about it all the time. How much you gotta
- 1:17:04Speaker 1: put on there. I mean, just spray it. You'll see
- 1:17:07Speaker 1: it does the foamy thing and then rinse it off.
- 1:17:10Speaker 1: Really spray it. Maybe. All this time about using hydrogen
- 1:17:13Speaker 1: peroxide to clean blood out of backpacks, the one thing
- 1:17:16Speaker 1: you'd be careful and I think it's it's actually, um
- 1:17:18Speaker 1: it could be corrosive. I think a fabric. Yeah, you
- 1:17:22Speaker 1: wouldn't want to like like like sprayed on there and
- 1:17:25Speaker 1: leave it. That's why that's why my backpack. I don't
- 1:17:27Speaker 1: like to use the bleach solution. Yeah, I'm afraid of
- 1:17:30Speaker 1: dicking up the stitches. Uh fift of three millimeter pair
- 1:17:34Speaker 1: cord as you carry, but I use that weird expensive
- 1:17:39Speaker 1: I can't think of what it's called, but like makes
- 1:17:41Speaker 1: it so it's like half the width now, dynema, Yeah
- 1:17:47Speaker 1: that's what it is. Well, I got some of that
- 1:17:50Speaker 1: ship's expensive, dude, but it's like, yeah, it's like the
- 1:17:55Speaker 1: guy that's really counting ounces. It's like what's extremely strong,
- 1:17:59Speaker 1: very thin in and I keep it because the thing
- 1:18:02Speaker 1: is out depending on what kind of stuff I'm doing,
- 1:18:05Speaker 1: if I'm really wait conscious and I'm not doing like
- 1:18:07Speaker 1: if I'm doing like a not needing to be way
- 1:18:10Speaker 1: conscious but in a very place where it's just very
- 1:18:12Speaker 1: difficult to be and there's a lot of like bushcraft
- 1:18:15Speaker 1: kind of factors at play, like river trips for instance,
- 1:18:19Speaker 1: right like a river, like a river hunting trip where
- 1:18:21Speaker 1: you just constantly rigging and fixing and trying to figure
- 1:18:23Speaker 1: stuff out deal with big animals. I'll bring extra pair
- 1:18:26Speaker 1: of cord, knowing that I might be cutting it up
- 1:18:29Speaker 1: and doing various things with it, guying out stuff, rigging tarps.
- 1:18:33Speaker 1: But the reason I bought that that souped up material
- 1:18:36Speaker 1: para cord is I would never cut it. It's just
- 1:18:40Speaker 1: like a little teeny's twenty five ft school that I
- 1:18:43Speaker 1: keep always in my stuff. And then because I know
- 1:18:47Speaker 1: I got one length for like hoisting stuff up or
- 1:18:49Speaker 1: any kind of thing. And if I need, if i'm
- 1:18:51Speaker 1: gonna know i'm gonna be using something, I'll grab some
- 1:18:53Speaker 1: all their like more conventional six hundred pound parachord and
- 1:18:56Speaker 1: carry it with me for for for just rigging. But
- 1:19:00Speaker 1: keep that one emergency piece intact. Good plan. Uh yeah day,
- 1:19:08Speaker 1: I'm forbidden for cutting it up unless it's a life
- 1:19:10Speaker 1: death situation. Uh. Cooking and water you gotta jet boil
- 1:19:15Speaker 1: one fuel canis I was gonna get. I thought of
- 1:19:17Speaker 1: a little pro tip though, I want to come back
- 1:19:19Speaker 1: to those tag game bags. They're drawstring is long enough
- 1:19:23Speaker 1: where unless you're you're hanging branch or post is just
- 1:19:28Speaker 1: you know, super thick. I'm guessing like over you know,
- 1:19:31Speaker 1: six or eight inches. But if you've got something smaller
- 1:19:34Speaker 1: you're gonna hang your bag off of. Um it's the
- 1:19:37Speaker 1: length of chords long enough where you can do a
- 1:19:41Speaker 1: And the pro tip here is that the not that
- 1:19:43Speaker 1: I eventually found and now used for this and east
- 1:19:46Speaker 1: of this, like he used to kill me, but I
- 1:19:49Speaker 1: never had like a good quick release, not for like
- 1:19:52Speaker 1: you know how some dudes or two people with an elk.
- 1:19:54Speaker 1: Sometimes they're holding up an elk quarter and then you're
- 1:19:57Speaker 1: supposed to be the guy tying, and then like you
- 1:20:00Speaker 1: have a plan in your head for like the not
- 1:20:02Speaker 1: to use, and so you be like you think you
- 1:20:04Speaker 1: got something tied up, and they let go. The thing
- 1:20:05Speaker 1: just hits the ground, or you do or you do
- 1:20:08Speaker 1: a clove hitch and you gotta get back up in
- 1:20:09Speaker 1: there and take all the weight off to get the
- 1:20:11Speaker 1: hitch on done, yeah, or you end up cutting it.
- 1:20:13Speaker 1: So I found a not called the Siberian hitch, or
- 1:20:16Speaker 1: I think another name for it is the evank e
- 1:20:19Speaker 1: v e n k hitch. But you can tie it.
- 1:20:25Speaker 1: I can actually hold the weight as long it's not
- 1:20:28Speaker 1: like a rear quarter on a elk, and hold it
- 1:20:31Speaker 1: and then the way you tie it is it goes
- 1:20:33Speaker 1: over and then you to create the loop. You basically
- 1:20:36Speaker 1: keep two of your fingers out and then your tag
- 1:20:39Speaker 1: in goes around the line and you pull a loop
- 1:20:41Speaker 1: through the loop that your finger two fingers are making,
- 1:20:44Speaker 1: and then you can just release the weight and it
- 1:20:46Speaker 1: snugs up. But so it's slick because one Siberian hitch. Yeah,
- 1:20:51Speaker 1: you can do it by yourself. Almost most of the time,
- 1:20:54Speaker 1: and then it's a quick release, so it needs to
- 1:20:57Speaker 1: come down. You just pull a tag in and it's out.
- 1:20:59Speaker 1: I like that. I got to look out the Siberian hitch. Um. Yeah,
- 1:21:03Speaker 1: so if you got but again, if you have a
- 1:21:05Speaker 1: bigger uh you know, branch or log you're hanging it
- 1:21:09Speaker 1: off of, you're gonna have to add some pecord. So
- 1:21:12Speaker 1: cooking the water, you gotta jet boil. One canister cigarette lighter.
- 1:21:17Speaker 1: Usually carry a regular cigarette lighter and then a mini
- 1:21:20Speaker 1: dinky cigarette lighter that I tuck away somewhere, because it
- 1:21:23Speaker 1: sucks to lose your lighter. Yeah, I definitely, Yeah, you
- 1:21:26Speaker 1: gotta have to um. Another thing about lighters I like
- 1:21:29Speaker 1: to do is I like to wrap, um tape all
- 1:21:33Speaker 1: my lighters. Don't you identify your lighter so muggs you're
- 1:21:36Speaker 1: with don't steal your lighter and just gives you like
- 1:21:38Speaker 1: a little place to have some tape. Yeah, duct tape
- 1:21:40Speaker 1: on one and maybe um we had a stuff called
- 1:21:43Speaker 1: gaff tape uh in camera world and uh it's super tough,
- 1:21:49Speaker 1: but like it's removable and you can write on it. Um,
- 1:21:53Speaker 1: so I can have some of that stuff you know
- 1:21:54Speaker 1: on it. And if you use a bright color, and
- 1:21:56Speaker 1: you can always find your lighter. Uh, got your drinking cup?
- 1:22:01Speaker 1: Long handled spoon. Now, anyone that eats house mountain house
- 1:22:06Speaker 1: freeze dry you need a long spoon. If you eat
- 1:22:10Speaker 1: out of freeze dry bags, you want a long spoon
- 1:22:12Speaker 1: that where your knuckles don't get all full of a
- 1:22:15Speaker 1: pasta sauce. Yeah, it's key, you can get one. I
- 1:22:19Speaker 1: think I think it's seed of stomach makes it titanium
- 1:22:22Speaker 1: on a titanium. Yeah. And then my little kid in
- 1:22:26Speaker 1: my little back country organizer, like I organized all my
- 1:22:30Speaker 1: small stuff in the outdoor Research back country Organizer, and
- 1:22:33Speaker 1: in there there's like almost a spot that looks like
- 1:22:35Speaker 1: it was made for long handle spoon. And that spoon
- 1:22:38Speaker 1: is just barely short enough or the or the back
- 1:22:43Speaker 1: counte organize is just barely long enough to hold that spoon.
- 1:22:45Speaker 1: And I file two V notches into the handle of
- 1:22:49Speaker 1: my spoon, and that spoon is called D double V notch,
- 1:22:52Speaker 1: And that's how I identify my spoon. Yanni puts a
- 1:22:56Speaker 1: bright piece of tape around his It's kind of a
- 1:22:58Speaker 1: better idea because it's because titanium spoons are like the
- 1:23:02Speaker 1: perfect camouflage. They disappear uh, one court size Nal Jean
- 1:23:11Speaker 1: wide mouth type bottle so you can scoop up water
- 1:23:14Speaker 1: in it. Um a dromedary. It's like a big collapsible
- 1:23:19Speaker 1: water bag. And that's like a really essential piece of
- 1:23:21Speaker 1: gear if you gotta go a long ways for your water. Yeah,
- 1:23:24Speaker 1: you have to haul water at all. Um, if you
- 1:23:26Speaker 1: know you're gonna be spending time, you know, away from
- 1:23:29Speaker 1: your water all day hunting, you know, up on the
- 1:23:30Speaker 1: side of a mountain. Um, it's key. I think that
- 1:23:34Speaker 1: they make a smaller but I think the one I
- 1:23:36Speaker 1: have is four leaders and it sounds like a lot,
- 1:23:39Speaker 1: but obviously you don't have to fill it up. They
- 1:23:43Speaker 1: make a lightweight, small bag, but it's not durable little
- 1:23:45Speaker 1: burst yeah, but I think you can get it in
- 1:23:48Speaker 1: the durable version. I think so, yeah, but that the
- 1:23:52Speaker 1: same thing. It's like, I think mine holds two courts.
- 1:23:55Speaker 1: It's like a black material. UM, very rugged. I don't like.
- 1:24:00Speaker 1: I don't like, uh, water bladders in my pack. Do
- 1:24:05Speaker 1: you drink out of a hose Because the hoses freeze,
- 1:24:10Speaker 1: the bladders leak. You got like a frozen hole, so
- 1:24:14Speaker 1: you can't drink anyways. And then all this stuff in
- 1:24:16Speaker 1: your pack soaking wet because the badder bladder burst. I
- 1:24:19Speaker 1: messed around with those out like those things, and I
- 1:24:21Speaker 1: think what happens even more often, what happened to me
- 1:24:23Speaker 1: so many times is that like the mouthpiece, live of
- 1:24:26Speaker 1: them have locks on them, you know, you know, the
- 1:24:28Speaker 1: open and clothes. But you leave it open and you
- 1:24:31Speaker 1: set your pack down and the weight of the stuff
- 1:24:35Speaker 1: the pack presses down onto your mouthpiece and it just
- 1:24:37Speaker 1: slowly leaks out. Yeah, not only is everything wet, but
- 1:24:40Speaker 1: then you're out of drinking water. Yeah. I'd rather think
- 1:24:42Speaker 1: about hunting and think about that dang bladder. My pack
- 1:24:45Speaker 1: man thinks driving crazy Now. The upside is, though, I
- 1:24:49Speaker 1: gotta say, it's sweet to just always have that, you know,
- 1:24:54Speaker 1: like a sip of water is handy. Oh listen, Yeah,
- 1:24:58Speaker 1: I didn't talk about the I didn't everybody know is
- 1:25:00Speaker 1: the upsides. I think the upsides are obvious. You stay
- 1:25:03Speaker 1: hydrated because you're drinking all the time. That's the upside.
- 1:25:06Speaker 1: And just you know, it's a big upside calling you know,
- 1:25:09Speaker 1: you're getting you know, dry mouth, you know, and you're
- 1:25:12Speaker 1: just like, oh the water you drink away, you go,
- 1:25:15Speaker 1: you drink taken for granted, that drinking water is good.
- 1:25:19Speaker 1: You drink way more water with a hose. But I've
- 1:25:23Speaker 1: just had too many problems with those things to where
- 1:25:27Speaker 1: I'm like, I just don't use them, and I don't
- 1:25:29Speaker 1: drink as much water as most people. I find, Uh
- 1:25:34Speaker 1: sterry pins, which are kind of like the only thing
- 1:25:36Speaker 1: we even use anymore. M Yeah, we're always packing. I
- 1:25:40Speaker 1: think it's Aquamera that makes the tablets, so we always
- 1:25:43Speaker 1: have those case because the sterry pen, it's a mechanical device. Man,
- 1:25:48Speaker 1: it's got like it's got UV bulb. It takes batteries,
- 1:25:55Speaker 1: but you can keep the thing in your shirt pocket.
- 1:25:57Speaker 1: I mean they're many, but it can fail. Yeah, ultra
- 1:26:00Speaker 1: could fail. Yeah, pump could fail too. So if you
- 1:26:04Speaker 1: like having super pristine clean water. Um. For instance, this
- 1:26:09Speaker 1: last time we were just on we the whole camp
- 1:26:12Speaker 1: drank out of a uh puddle, I mean it was
- 1:26:16Speaker 1: a puddle. It's like what do you call that? Think
- 1:26:17Speaker 1: it's like like a not a sinkhole, but a little
- 1:26:20Speaker 1: hole in the tunder with some water in it. Yeah,
- 1:26:21Speaker 1: like a little tunder puddle. Yeah, but like even your
- 1:26:27Speaker 1: even your kids could probably jump over this right small
- 1:26:31Speaker 1: like uh mushy, you know, muddy bottom, lots of stuff
- 1:26:36Speaker 1: floating in it. So if you if you don't want
- 1:26:38Speaker 1: to drink water that has floaters, you have to pump.
- 1:26:41Speaker 1: If you don't mind that strypens awesome, or if you're
- 1:26:44Speaker 1: just hunting near creeks and stuff you know that has
- 1:26:47Speaker 1: clear water. Uh. You got a head lamp ye black
- 1:26:54Speaker 1: diamond headlamp. Yeah, and I was gonna find the name
- 1:26:56Speaker 1: of it, and I ran out of time. But super small, smooth,
- 1:26:59Speaker 1: super lightweight, only runs on two triple a's. It's not
- 1:27:03Speaker 1: like a megabeam headlamp. Um, but it's bright enough where
- 1:27:08Speaker 1: I've run at night with it if I have a
- 1:27:10Speaker 1: fresh set of batteries. But you can dim the light
- 1:27:12Speaker 1: on it. Um. It's called Storm. No Storm is a
- 1:27:17Speaker 1: bigger one, maybe called the eye on you're talking to
- 1:27:22Speaker 1: you a little mini moment with retractable cord or that's
- 1:27:24Speaker 1: just no, no, no, that's my emergency one. It's the
- 1:27:27Speaker 1: one that's got a little it's like it's operated by
- 1:27:29Speaker 1: by swiping and touching the face. Yeah, you don't like it,
- 1:27:33Speaker 1: but it's super small, super lightweight. You can lock it
- 1:27:38Speaker 1: so that doesn't come on in your pocket, which I like. Um,
- 1:27:42Speaker 1: but yeah, it's nice. And since we're on head lamps,
- 1:27:45Speaker 1: I carry one of those petsel Elites, which is I
- 1:27:50Speaker 1: don't know the size of the three quarters of an
- 1:27:52Speaker 1: ounce super lightweight it runs. If you took a stack
- 1:27:55Speaker 1: of four or five quarters and stacked him up, that's
- 1:27:57Speaker 1: about how big that little thing is. I keep one
- 1:27:59Speaker 1: of my kit runs on two CRWO batteries and surprisingly
- 1:28:05Speaker 1: bright like I've had. I think you've even borrowed at once.
- 1:28:09Speaker 1: You could use it as your primary light. Yeah, but
- 1:28:12Speaker 1: now and then you get into like when you're out,
- 1:28:13Speaker 1: you just get into some like crazy nighttime situations and
- 1:28:16Speaker 1: it's you know, it's nice to be all that if
- 1:28:18Speaker 1: you need to work into the night, yes, and not
- 1:28:22Speaker 1: have you know, not be button up against the darkness.
- 1:28:25Speaker 1: Then you got an extra release. That's the thing, man, Like,
- 1:28:30Speaker 1: that's a real vulnerability. Very and those things get lost,
- 1:28:34Speaker 1: they do. Yeah. I haven't personally ever lost one, but
- 1:28:39Speaker 1: I definitely had clients over the years that lost them
- 1:28:42Speaker 1: and wouldn't even have a replacement. At camp. You know,
- 1:28:44Speaker 1: I had time hike out and drive seventy miles by
- 1:28:47Speaker 1: release there you go right there, carry the extra sevent
- 1:28:54Speaker 1: to get a release and they're not. Like, I couldn't
- 1:28:56Speaker 1: find the release I had, so I had to start
- 1:28:57Speaker 1: messing around. Yeah yeah, and shoot it. You know, I was.
- 1:29:03Speaker 1: I put in my notes here to shoot it because
- 1:29:07Speaker 1: you know, up until a week ago, I hadn't shot
- 1:29:09Speaker 1: my actually release for probably about a year. And uh,
- 1:29:13Speaker 1: it feels very similar, but it is different than my
- 1:29:16Speaker 1: regular release. And you're so here's a little redundancy. You're
- 1:29:19Speaker 1: bringing some bear spray and you're forty four. Each of
- 1:29:26Speaker 1: those things like, yeah, I see it. Uh, each of
- 1:29:29Speaker 1: those things is problematic. Anyone who's been hosed by bear
- 1:29:32Speaker 1: spray and a bear spray accidental discharge, which I have
- 1:29:35Speaker 1: been done, it's like that makes you kind of hate
- 1:29:37Speaker 1: that stuff. But I'd rather get hold by an accidental
- 1:29:41Speaker 1: bear spray discharge an accidental forty four discharge. The guy
- 1:29:44Speaker 1: in Colorado was just like, which doesn't even have grizzlies,
- 1:29:47Speaker 1: So I'll never understand this. So I'm dude in Colorado.
- 1:29:49Speaker 1: It's like Scared of black Bears, tripped over a tent
- 1:29:52Speaker 1: steak in the middle of night. He's going out to
- 1:29:54Speaker 1: take a growler in the morning, trips over a tent
- 1:29:57Speaker 1: steak and blows a hole through his own wrist. What
- 1:29:59Speaker 1: is his bear gun? I don't know. Yeah, everybody thinks
- 1:30:06Speaker 1: they're rambo man. It's like, yeah, yeah, I feel it
- 1:30:11Speaker 1: is redundant. But recently some there was He was one
- 1:30:16Speaker 1: guy I ain't two guys from malled and they were together.
- 1:30:19Speaker 1: Bow hunters are a high risk in Montana, and um,
- 1:30:23Speaker 1: I want to say that one of the bear sprays
- 1:30:25Speaker 1: didn't work and that was the guy that ended up
- 1:30:27Speaker 1: getting mauled. The other his body, you know, sprayed the
- 1:30:30Speaker 1: bear and eventually got the bear. Often, but the guy
- 1:30:33Speaker 1: ended up with you know, some ridiculous amount of stitches,
- 1:30:36Speaker 1: you know. Yeah, but again it's neither more perfect. No, never,
- 1:30:41Speaker 1: it's probably good to have a little redundancy. Their thing is, uh,
- 1:30:45Speaker 1: I can't remember the percentage of times, but oftentimes, when
- 1:30:47Speaker 1: when a couple of guys are hunting together and one
- 1:30:49Speaker 1: of them is getting mauled the other one of them,
- 1:30:53Speaker 1: the guy that's getting mauled in addition to getting mauled
- 1:30:55Speaker 1: winds up getting shot. That does happen because people get
- 1:30:58Speaker 1: panicky and they're not trained up in that kind of
- 1:31:04Speaker 1: handgun use. Yeah, there's there's statistics, and they just did
- 1:31:08Speaker 1: this big metas. They just did this big like meta
- 1:31:11Speaker 1: analysis of all these bear encounters over the years and
- 1:31:14Speaker 1: what happened and who did what and what the what,
- 1:31:18Speaker 1: and people hate to hear it because people want to
- 1:31:20Speaker 1: think that, like people want to think the handguns are
- 1:31:23Speaker 1: the answer to everything. Right, So when they did this
- 1:31:26Speaker 1: thing and they come out and say, like, statistically, pepper
- 1:31:29Speaker 1: spray is better, people get pissed because they act like
- 1:31:32Speaker 1: you're like, people get pissed because they act like this
- 1:31:36Speaker 1: finding is somehow meant to be an attack on guns. Yeah,
- 1:31:41Speaker 1: so people can't even like hear it clearly, right. But
- 1:31:45Speaker 1: they're both imperfect. They're both imperfect. I don't know that
- 1:31:48Speaker 1: the answer is to have both with me, but they're
- 1:31:52Speaker 1: both imperfect. Yeah, And speaking of I think being smart,
- 1:32:01Speaker 1: trying in addition to everything else, trying to be very
- 1:32:04Speaker 1: aware of your surroundings and also knowing how to behave
- 1:32:10Speaker 1: in the initial moments of a bear encounter are very important,
- 1:32:16Speaker 1: Like before it comes, before it's where you're shooting spray
- 1:32:20Speaker 1: at them, before it's when you're shooting guns at him
- 1:32:23Speaker 1: and whatnot. There's like ways to behave in that initial moment, right, Yeah,
- 1:32:31Speaker 1: And we have a lot of luck. You know, we
- 1:32:34Speaker 1: got false charged by a grizzly, but we have a lot,
- 1:32:37Speaker 1: we run a lot of bears off. I think, yeah,
- 1:32:41Speaker 1: just like being aware of the landscape that you're in,
- 1:32:44Speaker 1: and I think those tight close quarters sometimes of like timber.
- 1:32:49Speaker 1: You know, like if you're near a grizzly barrier or
- 1:32:51Speaker 1: something you know about to happen, like give the bear
- 1:32:55Speaker 1: space to move around you, right, Like, don't get caught
- 1:33:00Speaker 1: in that spot where especially if you knew knew the
- 1:33:02Speaker 1: bear was there, that you're in like confined quarters, you know,
- 1:33:06Speaker 1: with it, like obviously you can just walk through the
- 1:33:09Speaker 1: direction if you see one a couple hundred yards away,
- 1:33:11Speaker 1: you know, create space. If you create space, if it's
- 1:33:14Speaker 1: far away, if it's up close, create space. But not
- 1:33:18Speaker 1: like a retreat. It's like the thing like the minute before.
- 1:33:22Speaker 1: Things are too tight to establish a very commanding presence. Yes,
- 1:33:28Speaker 1: a loud, big, tall, confident. If there's two guys, they're
- 1:33:33Speaker 1: standing close together, establishing a very commanding presence. You do
- 1:33:38Speaker 1: not want to come here. I'm not coming at you.
- 1:33:42Speaker 1: Like the human is not going at the bear like
- 1:33:44Speaker 1: he's gonna go wrastle him. The human is not running
- 1:33:48Speaker 1: away from the bear like it's a wounded elk running
- 1:33:51Speaker 1: off through the woods, but the human is being like
- 1:33:54Speaker 1: I am here, I do not intend on moving right. Um,
- 1:34:01Speaker 1: but it's also different, man. And then you talk to
- 1:34:04Speaker 1: people that do get scratched, and uh, sometimes it happens.
- 1:34:07Speaker 1: There's no time to think. It's not like they like
- 1:34:11Speaker 1: tried this and tried that, which just all of a
- 1:34:13Speaker 1: sudden's a bear chewing on them. Yeah. Um, but yeah,
- 1:34:17Speaker 1: so you got your bear spray and you're shooting iron
- 1:34:19Speaker 1: and your bow and arrow and your GPS. I'm still
- 1:34:28Speaker 1: gonna carry it. I know that now we can all
- 1:34:30Speaker 1: have our maps downloaded on our phones. I don't like
- 1:34:34Speaker 1: the battery life on phone though. Yeah, that's the problem
- 1:34:37Speaker 1: with it. You know, if I had this, if I
- 1:34:39Speaker 1: was able just to pop in a couple of fresh
- 1:34:40Speaker 1: batteries into my phone and again, I'll have a goal
- 1:34:44Speaker 1: zero charger which has two charges, and I know if
- 1:34:47Speaker 1: I run it in the airplane mode, I can get
- 1:34:50Speaker 1: multiple days out of it. But I just don't trust
- 1:34:52Speaker 1: it yet. I like being able to take a couple
- 1:34:54Speaker 1: of lithium double a's and told my GPS and have
- 1:34:57Speaker 1: that thing on for forty eight hours if I want, uh,
- 1:35:02Speaker 1: you do use a paper map. Yeah, and again that's
- 1:35:05Speaker 1: a redundancy. But you know, again the GPS could go down,
- 1:35:10Speaker 1: you could lose it, and it's you know, to sit
- 1:35:12Speaker 1: and plot with someone else. Yeah, and just look at
- 1:35:14Speaker 1: a big picture. Yeah, it does help you get up.
- 1:35:16Speaker 1: It helps you, like spatially, even though you can go
- 1:35:18Speaker 1: look at everything on a GPS, it's like spatially, it's
- 1:35:21Speaker 1: sometimes nice to get a big picture view of where
- 1:35:24Speaker 1: you're at. Yeah. And you know, if I was hunting, um,
- 1:35:28Speaker 1: like an area that i'd been hunting for five years
- 1:35:32Speaker 1: and just like a general zone that where I had
- 1:35:34Speaker 1: walked you know, almost every trail or over every knob
- 1:35:39Speaker 1: and just knew it, I wouldn't need a map, you know,
- 1:35:42Speaker 1: maybe wouldn't even carry GPS. No, there's yeah, there's a
- 1:35:44Speaker 1: lot of situations where I wouldn't be hunting, like large
- 1:35:47Speaker 1: new areas. I always like to have a paper map
- 1:35:49Speaker 1: were the main place I think I'm gonna be hunting,
- 1:35:51Speaker 1: I haven't built as the center of the map. Um,
- 1:35:55Speaker 1: wet wipes, but no TP just wet wipes. And actually
- 1:35:59Speaker 1: what I lies on this, that's wrong. Okay, you can't
- 1:36:02Speaker 1: burn them, No, I know, I know you don't like that,
- 1:36:05Speaker 1: but I bury him properly. And then you bring you
- 1:36:11Speaker 1: bring a butt pad, like a sitting patch, sitting pad. Yeah,
- 1:36:17Speaker 1: keep my butt dry, um. And I think it's multi use.
- 1:36:20Speaker 1: You know, you could use it to put you know,
- 1:36:22Speaker 1: food or you know, work some gear out on and
- 1:36:25Speaker 1: you know underneath the tarp. It's nice to have like
- 1:36:27Speaker 1: a second place. It's off the ground. Um. And if
- 1:36:31Speaker 1: we're taking a nap, you know you could it's like
- 1:36:34Speaker 1: it's a little extra cushion in the woods. If you're
- 1:36:36Speaker 1: inter rock. Now, I carry one off. I just wouldn't
- 1:36:38Speaker 1: carry one on that trip. If I was doing a
- 1:36:40Speaker 1: glassing intensive trip, i'd like to carry it. Then it
- 1:36:43Speaker 1: depends on the ground. I just had one up from
- 1:36:46Speaker 1: the tunder and I never used it because the tongs
- 1:36:48Speaker 1: are so comfortable to sit on. But it was dry, right,
- 1:36:52Speaker 1: So yeah, I do, Yeah, I do like butt pads.
- 1:36:54Speaker 1: I like that little outdoorsman's back, that little outdoorsman's butt pad.
- 1:36:57Speaker 1: And I got just the place on my pack where
- 1:36:59Speaker 1: I can kind of wedge it in perfectly. So you
- 1:37:01Speaker 1: got your hunting license. That's smart. Um. Smoking a bottle.
- 1:37:05Speaker 1: We already talked about that wind detector you are bringing
- 1:37:07Speaker 1: your phone just for snapping pictures. You get a signal
- 1:37:09Speaker 1: on top of mountain. You can check in and see
- 1:37:11Speaker 1: how the kids are doing. You gotta recharger. Um how
- 1:37:18Speaker 1: many charges can you get off on your phone off
- 1:37:19Speaker 1: that charger too? So personal hygiene many toothpaste, toothbrush with
- 1:37:26Speaker 1: the handcut off, which I think is something people do.
- 1:37:28Speaker 1: It's silly, but okay, Uh, extra contact lenses and then
- 1:37:35Speaker 1: a little thing of bond or salt. That pepperminty bond
- 1:37:39Speaker 1: or salt. Dude is a Yeah. When you're getting like
- 1:37:42Speaker 1: itchy head and stuff after four or five days, that
- 1:37:45Speaker 1: stuff resets the clock. Yep. Yeah, And you could use it,
- 1:37:49Speaker 1: you know, or if you had like a major you know,
- 1:37:52Speaker 1: like a butchering session, you know, and you're just like
- 1:37:55Speaker 1: up to your elbows and blood and you just want
- 1:37:58Speaker 1: to clean up. Um. Yeah, And it's like it's a
- 1:38:01Speaker 1: little bitty um it's like a one one use Like
- 1:38:05Speaker 1: it's like I don't know, it's like cardboard, but the
- 1:38:08Speaker 1: insides line somehow. It probably has I don't know, close
- 1:38:12Speaker 1: to a tablespoon is soap in it, which for dr
- 1:38:14Speaker 1: Bees is a lot. Man. You hit. Uh, you hit
- 1:38:18Speaker 1: the nether parts and uh, and you're nogging in a
- 1:38:22Speaker 1: little creek wash. You came away feeling like you've been
- 1:38:24Speaker 1: back home for a couple of days. I love that stuff.
- 1:38:27Speaker 1: So then then in your outdoor research a little back
- 1:38:29Speaker 1: country organized er, you got a minimal first aid kit. Yep.
- 1:38:35Speaker 1: My general first aid kit is uh, like I mean,
- 1:38:39Speaker 1: general first aid kit is triple antibiotic ointment, handful of
- 1:38:45Speaker 1: band aids, gauze, and med tape. Yeah, there's only so
- 1:38:49Speaker 1: much you're gonna be able to do, you know. I
- 1:38:51Speaker 1: do have like a big rap um in there, and
- 1:38:54Speaker 1: I have some of this stuff called combat gauze where
- 1:38:58Speaker 1: god we're saying someone did take a shot wound or
- 1:39:01Speaker 1: a broad head you know, you know cross the armor
- 1:39:04Speaker 1: like we basically have just like a major, major open wound.
- 1:39:08Speaker 1: It's a um gauze that you wrap or or you
- 1:39:11Speaker 1: know you or that you put on the wound and
- 1:39:13Speaker 1: then wrap you know, your bandage around it. But the
- 1:39:16Speaker 1: gauze itself has a clouding agent in it. Yeah. I
- 1:39:19Speaker 1: used to carry the packets. Yeah, of the clouding agent
- 1:39:22Speaker 1: stuff with that stuff expires pretty quickly, Like you'll have
- 1:39:24Speaker 1: your pack for you then realize it's all crystallized to one.
- 1:39:28Speaker 1: If you carry it, you gotta keep up on it.
- 1:39:30Speaker 1: But yeah, if you had like a major blood incident,
- 1:39:34Speaker 1: it's good to have. But if you're gonna do it,
- 1:39:36Speaker 1: make sure that it's that you're renewing it all the
- 1:39:39Speaker 1: time because they do go bad. Um sometimes I have
- 1:39:41Speaker 1: to carry with me just depends is um depending on
- 1:39:46Speaker 1: where I'm at, uh EpiPen panophlactic shock just because of
- 1:39:51Speaker 1: certain insects and stuff. Good thing to mention, I think
- 1:39:55Speaker 1: there's like the small drugs in that first aid kit
- 1:39:58Speaker 1: or what could really help you and keep you out
- 1:39:59Speaker 1: to or longer. Like you the other day gave me
- 1:40:01Speaker 1: I had like I started to get a sour belly
- 1:40:03Speaker 1: when we're on Prince of Wales and you gave me
- 1:40:06Speaker 1: an emodium a D and one pill cured me. That's
- 1:40:09Speaker 1: all it took. Yeah, I carry and for and I
- 1:40:12Speaker 1: just buy boxes of the little single serves because they've
- 1:40:16Speaker 1: got a good protective coating on them. I carry a
- 1:40:19Speaker 1: handful of ibuprofen packs, just little single serving things. There's
- 1:40:24Speaker 1: a pocket my organized your wedgement, a couple packs idprofen,
- 1:40:28Speaker 1: a couple of packs of Thailand all an emodium a
- 1:40:32Speaker 1: D type thing, and then a anihissed A means a
- 1:40:37Speaker 1: good one type thing. And then I carry in my
- 1:40:40Speaker 1: kid too. I was talking about in my little medicate
- 1:40:42Speaker 1: and my medicate, like I said, it's the size of
- 1:40:44Speaker 1: like it's smaller than a much smaller than a wallet,
- 1:40:48Speaker 1: a couple of band aids, a couple of gauze strips,
- 1:40:50Speaker 1: a really small thing of med tape, but also carry
- 1:40:53Speaker 1: a handful of alcohol swabs to clean out cuts. And
- 1:40:56Speaker 1: again it's like it's like nothing, you know what I mean.
- 1:40:58Speaker 1: It was like sounds like a lot. Add it up.
- 1:41:00Speaker 1: You put it all together just like a little it's
- 1:41:01Speaker 1: like a little teeny plastic envelope. And this whole thing
- 1:41:04Speaker 1: fits into an organizer. That's I mean, how big is
- 1:41:08Speaker 1: the organized like a sandwich? Yeah, there's sandwich mine. Actually
- 1:41:14Speaker 1: if you if you, if I overload it with things like, um,
- 1:41:18Speaker 1: it won't be for this hunt, but let's just say
- 1:41:21Speaker 1: for another hunt and put in like a choke wrench,
- 1:41:25Speaker 1: and then the the boar snake for cleaning out a
- 1:41:29Speaker 1: you know gun. If you have any channel in the
- 1:41:31Speaker 1: mud or something, it can get over a pound like
- 1:41:35Speaker 1: it can have to have some weight to it. But
- 1:41:37Speaker 1: for this hunt, it will be roughly around a pound,
- 1:41:39Speaker 1: you know. Um. But yeah, on top of the first
- 1:41:42Speaker 1: aid kit, there'll be uh the emergency survival kit which
- 1:41:47Speaker 1: you know firestarter um in there. Um I have and
- 1:41:54Speaker 1: I'm running the h I have two fire starts. Actually,
- 1:41:56Speaker 1: I do have some cotton balls of asilene, and then
- 1:41:58Speaker 1: I also have these little just one these they're called
- 1:42:02Speaker 1: Esbet fuel cubes, and you like, the guys will steal those. Yeah,
- 1:42:07Speaker 1: so you gotta be careful if it's your main kid
- 1:42:09Speaker 1: that ever goes everywhere with you, careful because they don't
- 1:42:13Speaker 1: like them. Yeah, but that thing burns I think like
- 1:42:16Speaker 1: twelve or fifteen minutes, Like it goes. It's supposed to
- 1:42:18Speaker 1: be using like a cooking system, but it's a little
- 1:42:20Speaker 1: cube and you just sit there and like I forget
- 1:42:23Speaker 1: like the heat that it produced. It's a lot. But
- 1:42:25Speaker 1: like in a shitty wet you know, fire building situation,
- 1:42:30Speaker 1: you'd have like a flame that just basically sat there
- 1:42:32Speaker 1: for twelve minutes as you try to like build a
- 1:42:35Speaker 1: fire around. Yeah. Yeah, I know they're nice to have.
- 1:42:37Speaker 1: My kid is like I take one of dirt myths
- 1:42:39Speaker 1: chew tins. And that's kind of dual purpose because I
- 1:42:42Speaker 1: take cat cotton balls, rub vast lene to impact them
- 1:42:45Speaker 1: in there, then put a couple of seed or knots
- 1:42:46Speaker 1: in there, and that's my like fire kid. And you
- 1:42:48Speaker 1: got like a little vast lane backup, and depending on
- 1:42:50Speaker 1: where I'm at, I'll pull that thing in and out,
- 1:42:52Speaker 1: depending just general conditions like if I'm you know, if
- 1:42:56Speaker 1: I'm hunting down in New Mexico, I'm probably not carrying them,
- 1:42:59Speaker 1: right because the lighters all you need. Yeah, because you
- 1:43:02Speaker 1: know you got you can be able to pull it
- 1:43:04Speaker 1: together if you're in an area that's just like impossible.
- 1:43:07Speaker 1: Southeast Alaska. I got a fire kit. Um. So it's
- 1:43:10Speaker 1: just like, yeah, you got a lot of the stuff.
- 1:43:11Speaker 1: You just gotta make calls on all the time. Yeah.
- 1:43:13Speaker 1: I have like a little there's like a little super
- 1:43:15Speaker 1: mini compass in there. Um. I don't carry a big compass,
- 1:43:20Speaker 1: just you know, in my pocket, so it's in there. Um.
- 1:43:23Speaker 1: There's like a little lot of fishing line a hook, um.
- 1:43:29Speaker 1: But again it's super super small. Um. But the other
- 1:43:33Speaker 1: things in the backcountry organizer that like my spare lighters
- 1:43:37Speaker 1: will be in there. The stuff called tenacious tape, which
- 1:43:39Speaker 1: is basically a little piece of that. It's like uh
- 1:43:42Speaker 1: reinforced nylon tape that. Um, it's like a patch for
- 1:43:47Speaker 1: if you rip it like your outer shell or you know. Yeah,
- 1:43:50Speaker 1: I carry the back form where it's like basically it's
- 1:43:53Speaker 1: like having a square of paper in your bag. It's
- 1:43:56Speaker 1: just one patch. It's like a two inch circle that
- 1:44:00Speaker 1: tuck somewhere in my little kit and you can fix
- 1:44:01Speaker 1: stuff with it, and it's good to have. And again
- 1:44:04Speaker 1: that's the kind of thing where depending what's going on,
- 1:44:07Speaker 1: you pull it in and out. Um, I do carry
- 1:44:10Speaker 1: a little teeny baggy. You gotta hear extra batteries. It's
- 1:44:14Speaker 1: good to like line your stuff up, line your gear
- 1:44:17Speaker 1: up to that. It all is using the same stuff
- 1:44:20Speaker 1: as much as you can. Yeah, unfortunately I don't have that.
- 1:44:23Speaker 1: I got triple a's in my head lamp. I got
- 1:44:25Speaker 1: double as in my GPS, and then the stery pen
- 1:44:29Speaker 1: runs on the I think it's a CR one Yeah,
- 1:44:32Speaker 1: so I use a CR one to three flashlight. And
- 1:44:36Speaker 1: then I got my head lamp runs on the c
- 1:44:39Speaker 1: R one two three as well, So I'm sorry. My
- 1:44:43Speaker 1: my head lamp and my sterry pen run the same battery,
- 1:44:45Speaker 1: and I used to try. I always try to bounce
- 1:44:47Speaker 1: around and get it right. You always bought it with
- 1:44:49Speaker 1: some outlier item that they don't make that way by
- 1:44:51Speaker 1: Jerry like to try to like duplicate up. So I
- 1:44:53Speaker 1: got a couple of extra batteries with me that work
- 1:44:55Speaker 1: for various different things. Um. Then you got orange flagging tape. Again,
- 1:45:00Speaker 1: very small. You take like ten ft of that and
- 1:45:02Speaker 1: roll up in the little ball. It's like the tip
- 1:45:04Speaker 1: of your pinky finger. Great to have, especially hunting by yourself.
- 1:45:09Speaker 1: You take a shot, hang that tape where you were standing,
- 1:45:15Speaker 1: march over to where you know the animals standing, hang
- 1:45:19Speaker 1: a piece of tape. When you find first blood, mark
- 1:45:22Speaker 1: that with the tape, and again it will be redundant
- 1:45:25Speaker 1: because now I pretty much do all of that with
- 1:45:27Speaker 1: my GPS. But man, is it easier to look over
- 1:45:31Speaker 1: your shoulder and be like, oh, there's especially when you're
- 1:45:33Speaker 1: like on a shitty blood shilling you're trying to figure
- 1:45:35Speaker 1: out like a general direction of travel possibly and you
- 1:45:39Speaker 1: can look back and say, oh, I can see kind
- 1:45:41Speaker 1: of like a corridor that the elk could run through,
- 1:45:45Speaker 1: you know from where I am. Now you know stuff
- 1:45:47Speaker 1: like that, Yeah, and if you're hunt, like like if
- 1:45:49Speaker 1: you take if you take a three yard poke at
- 1:45:51Speaker 1: something in rough cut ground, you like go running over there,
- 1:45:54Speaker 1: which shouldn't. Don't run over there, take your time figure
- 1:45:56Speaker 1: out what's going on. But you go over there, can't
- 1:45:58Speaker 1: figure out what was happening where it was, and then
- 1:46:01Speaker 1: you realize that you lost track of where you were
- 1:46:03Speaker 1: standing or laying down. That's when trouble starts. Because when
- 1:46:10Speaker 1: you mark your location with something to tape whatever you
- 1:46:13Speaker 1: leave there ta I like tape, a lot, anything, a
- 1:46:15Speaker 1: piece of clothing, mark that spot because then when you
- 1:46:18Speaker 1: go over there and you're like, I think it was
- 1:46:19Speaker 1: right here, but I can't find any hair, no blood,
- 1:46:21Speaker 1: no nothing, And then you're like where where where was
- 1:46:23Speaker 1: that Again? If you mark it, you'll go back there
- 1:46:26Speaker 1: and you'll look and you'll remember it was right there.
- 1:46:28Speaker 1: You need, like you have to plan on worst case
- 1:46:32Speaker 1: scenario when it comes to reconstructing something. If you've got
- 1:46:35Speaker 1: two guys is great because one guy stays putting, one
- 1:46:37Speaker 1: guy goes over there, and the guy that stays putting
- 1:46:39Speaker 1: direct you right to where that thing was. If you
- 1:46:41Speaker 1: buy yourself, you gotta have a plan. Um. Then you
- 1:46:45Speaker 1: got we already talked about a backup head lamp, and
- 1:46:50Speaker 1: you can't A little minithing is super clue. Yeah, I
- 1:46:54Speaker 1: just feel like that should be leaking everywhere, making my
- 1:46:56Speaker 1: stuff all gluey. No, it's like a you know, it's
- 1:46:58Speaker 1: always a brand new one, this unopened um and it's
- 1:47:02Speaker 1: like a little mini deal. It's it says one time
- 1:47:05Speaker 1: you used but I mean like there's nothing there where
- 1:47:07Speaker 1: you could use it a few times. But UM cuts man,
- 1:47:11Speaker 1: or even like you know, when you're working with blood
- 1:47:13Speaker 1: a lot, your hands dry out and I'll get these
- 1:47:15Speaker 1: just wicked cuts that will not heal and I'll just
- 1:47:18Speaker 1: clean it out and super glue like cut. I've never
- 1:47:22Speaker 1: tried it by no people made it works. Yeah, it
- 1:47:25Speaker 1: works great. Alright. So run down, run down like your
- 1:47:28Speaker 1: food for like bad country hunting. Yeah, super basic. UM
- 1:47:33Speaker 1: breakfast is gonna be Uh. This is this new uh
- 1:47:37Speaker 1: instant oman we found called Umquats and it's like a
- 1:47:41Speaker 1: hundred times better than the Quaker stuff. Yeah, it's like
- 1:47:45Speaker 1: not like all nasty sugary crap. Yeah this Yeah, the
- 1:47:49Speaker 1: Quaker is like eating like a freaking candy bar or
- 1:47:52Speaker 1: maybe even worse for breakfast. And it's just I always
- 1:47:55Speaker 1: feel like with Quaker, it's like thirty minutes later, I'm like, oh,
- 1:47:57Speaker 1: I'm hungry. You should eat a bar. These unquote oats
- 1:48:00Speaker 1: or legita. You can get ones that have like a
- 1:48:02Speaker 1: mix with like keen one other grains and stuff in them,
- 1:48:05Speaker 1: but like a skeptical that first, but it's very good man. Um.
- 1:48:10Speaker 1: But sometimes I'll have a bar in there too, or
- 1:48:12Speaker 1: I'll have a bar soon on, you know, in the morning,
- 1:48:14Speaker 1: and then the Starbucks via coffee um launch and snacks
- 1:48:20Speaker 1: pro bars and snickers for for the Starbucks via coffee,
- 1:48:26Speaker 1: I was like, carry little non dairy cream or two
- 1:48:28Speaker 1: this kind of guy I am. Man, Yeah, yeah, like
- 1:48:31Speaker 1: your coffee white UM Launch. So I'm not doing any
- 1:48:36Speaker 1: kind of sandwiches. I'm gonna have like a sandwich for
- 1:48:38Speaker 1: day one. It's gonna be like heavy and packed in,
- 1:48:41Speaker 1: but no real sandwich is gonna be Launch is gonna
- 1:48:44Speaker 1: be very snacky. Um. So I'll have like a little
- 1:48:48Speaker 1: bit of slammy, some cheese, maybe like a banana and
- 1:48:51Speaker 1: a baguette for the first day because it's something that's
- 1:48:54Speaker 1: gonna be eating the first day and we'll be gone
- 1:48:56Speaker 1: after that. It's gonna be bars, jerky Um custom trail mix.
- 1:49:03Speaker 1: That's pretty much it. Yeah, I just got to survive
- 1:49:06Speaker 1: on that and the Chicken Bully on cubes just for
- 1:49:08Speaker 1: at night with hot water to drink, yeah, or yeah,
- 1:49:10Speaker 1: if it's cold and shitty mill a day, Yeah, you
- 1:49:12Speaker 1: heat heat up some water, put a little Chicken Bully
- 1:49:15Speaker 1: on cuban there and it's uh, yeah, it's very nice.
- 1:49:19Speaker 1: And then for dinner you're going with the house, going
- 1:49:20Speaker 1: to the house, and then a should chase that with
- 1:49:22Speaker 1: a candy bar. And then uh, I've been having a
- 1:49:26Speaker 1: lot of cramps recently, and so I've been Uh I
- 1:49:28Speaker 1: got this stuff called Noon Electro Lights. There's coming like
- 1:49:31Speaker 1: a handy little vial. I think there's ten or twelve
- 1:49:34Speaker 1: of the deals in there. So I'm gonna try to
- 1:49:36Speaker 1: drink one of these electro light tablets every day. He
- 1:49:39Speaker 1: dissolve in the water and you know, it gives your
- 1:49:41Speaker 1: water a little flavor to which is nice. But try
- 1:49:44Speaker 1: to keep my cramps down in my calves. And then
- 1:49:46Speaker 1: a stick of salted butter. I'm packing that extra calories. Man,
- 1:49:51Speaker 1: there's like a few things that have more calories. But yeah,
- 1:49:57Speaker 1: and then also this time here you find a lot
- 1:49:59Speaker 1: of eats. And it's nice to have a little butter
- 1:50:02Speaker 1: because you find you find like legit clean bleats out there,
- 1:50:05Speaker 1: you know, one of the better mushrooms out Um. Then
- 1:50:10Speaker 1: you got your first day food. It was just your
- 1:50:12Speaker 1: heavy jump just start out right. Yeah, so you know, yeah,
- 1:50:15Speaker 1: it's like a it's like a heavier load. And I
- 1:50:17Speaker 1: think you're roughly looking at to two pounds of food
- 1:50:21Speaker 1: a day to get the calories that you need. Um,
- 1:50:25Speaker 1: so yeah, I'll be looking at you know, fifteen pounds
- 1:50:28Speaker 1: of food roughly. But yeah, that it's nice to have
- 1:50:31Speaker 1: like just normal food one more day until you just
- 1:50:34Speaker 1: go into full on like barn mountain house mode, you know.
- 1:50:39Speaker 1: And we don't. I had to get into the depth here,
- 1:50:40Speaker 1: but I figured just because we were talking about all
- 1:50:42Speaker 1: this stuff, we're gonna be caring. I'm gonna be carrying
- 1:50:43Speaker 1: in the woods. I know people are wondering, right what
- 1:50:46Speaker 1: I'm carrying for my bow and archery, you know, other
- 1:50:50Speaker 1: archery equipment. And uh so it's a prime centergy bow,
- 1:50:55Speaker 1: um eastern full metal jackets, very heavy. Total airrowweight for
- 1:50:59Speaker 1: me is like five thirty five um grains, which is
- 1:51:04Speaker 1: you know, well over a hundred grains heavy than a
- 1:51:06Speaker 1: lot of people shoot grains. Slick trick? What's that? The
- 1:51:12Speaker 1: slick trick? It's just a it's similar to like the muzzy,
- 1:51:17Speaker 1: which which muzzy is that? But it's basically like a
- 1:51:22Speaker 1: imagine a field point with a sharp actually a sharp
- 1:51:25Speaker 1: like chiseled point on it, and then it's got uh
- 1:51:28Speaker 1: slots cut through it, and so you put a blade
- 1:51:32Speaker 1: through it this way, you know, and then another blade
- 1:51:36Speaker 1: crosses it like there's a slot in the yourself. Yeah,
- 1:51:40Speaker 1: which is nice because it's got replaceable blades. So if
- 1:51:42Speaker 1: I have so, I can carry like two sets of
- 1:51:44Speaker 1: replaceable blades, which I will, and so in case that
- 1:51:47Speaker 1: it's a four bladed, yeah, it's a four bladed fixed
- 1:51:50Speaker 1: four bladed and um yeah, super super sharp and that's
- 1:51:55Speaker 1: a nice thing I like about. And I happened to
- 1:51:56Speaker 1: missing elk and you know, shot one into the dirt.
- 1:52:00Speaker 1: I could just take out those two blades, replace it
- 1:52:03Speaker 1: with two freshies, and I've got it, you know, super yeah,
- 1:52:07Speaker 1: ready to go. And then he got your release. Yeah,
- 1:52:09Speaker 1: so I think it's called the Eaty Beattie Goose Scott Release.
- 1:52:13Speaker 1: It's old. It's you guys, used to have those, and
- 1:52:16Speaker 1: not I got were spot hogs, but I used to
- 1:52:19Speaker 1: have that. I used to use that Scott release all time.
- 1:52:22Speaker 1: All right, that's Yanni's backpack. Man. Is that exciting? It is? Man,
