- 0:02Yeah, another uh you know, great
- 0:05opportunity against another great team.
- 0:08Um we seem to be catching teams at their
- 0:10best. Um you know, Florida's playing
- 0:14really good basketball. You have won
- 0:16five straight. Uh it's the best team in
- 0:18our league, I think, by a pretty
- 0:19significant margin, and you know, Coach
- 0:21Golden has shown to be probably the best
- 0:23coach in our league right now. So, um,
- 0:25tremendous opportunity for for our guys
- 0:27to, you know, go on the road and, you
- 0:29know, see what we got against, you know,
- 0:31a team that's just got unbelievable
- 0:34size. Um, you know, especially three
- 0:37through five. Um, one of the most
- 0:40imposing physical teams in college
- 0:42basketball. Um, you know, best probably
- 0:46the best rebounding team in the country.
- 0:48um play really well at home and uh
- 0:51they're starting to find their find
- 0:52their stride. You know, Chinu has just
- 0:54been a total difference maker for that
- 0:56team. Um you 21 rebounds in the last
- 0:59game, 11 offensive, you know, he'll
- 1:01he'll he'll keep you up at night and um
- 1:04you know, then they got Cond and they
- 1:06got Tommy Hawk and they got hand locked
- 1:08and you know, so um and then when those
- 1:11guards start making shots, you know,
- 1:13good luck. Um, so our guys understand
- 1:17that, you know, well, they don't
- 1:19understand yet because we haven't met,
- 1:20but they're about to figure out, you
- 1:21know, pretty quickly what what's going
- 1:23to be required in order for us to, uh,
- 1:25you know, have a chance to beat one of
- 1:26the best teams in college basketball
- 1:27right now. So, um, great opportunity,
- 1:31um, you know, against another really,
- 1:33really quality team. So, take any
- 1:35questions.
- 1:38>> Stephen, obviously you've played some
- 1:39some big front lines, whether it was
- 1:40Michigan, Arizona, you've played some
- 1:41physical teams. Florida's
- 1:44be a different animal, maybe similar.
- 1:45What is there any secret sauce to trying
- 1:47to get these guys prepared or is it just
- 1:49they're going to have to go out there
- 1:50like you said and figure it out? How do
- 1:51you sort of handle it?
- 1:54>> Yeah, I mean there's no secret sauce.
- 1:56Um, you know, you just got to be ready
- 2:00to, you know, hit every single
- 2:02possession. And, um, it can't just be
- 2:06the three guys that are crashing the
- 2:07offensive glass. It's got to be all five
- 2:09guys staying in possessions and
- 2:11finishing possessions. Um, and it's
- 2:14going to require just a different level
- 2:16of toughness and physicality and just
- 2:17want and desire. So, anyone that doesn't
- 2:20check out in this game is not going to
- 2:21play. I don't care who it is. You know,
- 2:23if you if you miss checkouts in this
- 2:25game, just come sit next to me. So,
- 2:27that's how we're going to approach it.
- 2:28That's how how it's going to be. So, um,
- 2:31if it means if winning is important,
- 2:33then our guys will go hit somebody every
- 2:35single possession. uh if it's not then,
- 2:38you know, they'll just come sit down and
- 2:40they'll enjoy uh watching the game over
- 2:42on the bench. So that that that's really
- 2:44the only way I can speak to it is like,
- 2:47you know, we just
- 2:49they do so many good things, but you
- 2:51know, obviously I think at the top of
- 2:53the list is going to be just rebounding
- 2:54and uh our guys got to, you know, while
- 2:57we've rebounded almost every opponent in
- 2:58the SEC, you know, Florida's like plus
- 3:0124 I think in wins and uh that's a
- 3:04significant margin. So It's going to
- 3:06require a lot of special in in the
- 3:08effort and the energy department and the
- 3:10toughness department in order for us to
- 3:12uh to compete.
- 3:15>> You know, only four threes these these
- 3:17last two games, but you've guys won
- 3:18those games. Do you feel like again like
- 3:20the shots are good looking? They're just
- 3:22not going down. It's just for some
- 3:24reason everybody's just kind of all
- 3:25missing at the same time or what do you
- 3:27make of the the outside shooting?
- 3:29>> I told him to miss on purpose so we
- 3:31could work on our defense. So that's
- 3:33just brilliant coaching by me. Um, no. I
- 3:36mean, if you look at, um, you look at
- 3:39South Carolina, you know, if we took 19,
- 3:43I loved 14 of them. Hated five of them.
- 3:47Um,
- 3:49clean looks that we've been making all
- 3:51year. You know, you got to remember, you
- 3:53know, the five games leading up to the
- 3:55South Carolina game, you know, uh we had
- 3:58minus Tahad and like that that group
- 4:01that was in our in our regular rotation
- 4:03was shooting like 45% from three. So, we
- 4:05were shooting it well. Um and uh you
- 4:08know, in the miss game, if we went two
- 4:12for I was 18, maybe uh 17, you know, I
- 4:18probably didn't like three of them. So,
- 4:20you know, Elijah had four that were like
- 4:23halfway down the basket, you know. So, I
- 4:25I loved every single one of his and I
- 4:27need him to continue to shoot those. Um,
- 4:29but, you know, in order for us to be
- 4:31able to beat a Florida, we got to make,
- 4:34you know, 40% of our threes. We have to.
- 4:36If we don't, we'll probably lose. Um,
- 4:38because, you know, in order to beat the
- 4:41best teams on your schedule on the road,
- 4:42it requires a little bit of special. And
- 4:44if we're going to get good looks, um,
- 4:46you know, we got to make them. So, um,
- 4:50you know, but the encouraging thing to
- 4:52me, and I said this after the game, was
- 4:55we recognized that we weren't shooting
- 4:56it great and we stopped. We didn't shoot
- 4:58as many of them, you know, we we just
- 5:00put our head down and took the ball to
- 5:01the rim and we were intentional and we
- 5:03played off two feet. We used shot fakes
- 5:04and we got to the foul line. That takes
- 5:06a different level of maturity because a
- 5:08lot of teams, you know, who love the
- 5:11three ball will just continue to shoot
- 5:13it and try and shoot them shoot their
- 5:14way out of it. And our guys realize
- 5:16like, you know, they're not falling. So,
- 5:17let's just, you know, attack the rim and
- 5:20and and either score around the rim or
- 5:22get to the foul line. And this team's
- 5:23done a good job of that this year. So,
- 5:25was proud of our guys for recognizing
- 5:27that, you know, being coachable on that
- 5:30and um, you know, ultimately being
- 5:33effective from two and from three and
- 5:35then our defense obviously, you know,
- 5:37being able to step up in those two games
- 5:38to uh, kind of power us through to two
- 5:40wins.
- 5:42I was wondering if you had any reaction
- 5:43to Betty Yako being eligible and
- 5:45planning to play at Alabama and if that,
- 5:47you know, would you guys consider, you
- 5:49know, the idea of bringing back a player
- 5:51with an eligibility or anything like
- 5:53that?
- 5:54>> Yeah, Walker and Jabari have said
- 5:56they're coming back this year and
- 5:57immediately eligible. Um,
- 6:01yeah, it's uh
- 6:05so obviously I don't know if he's
- 6:06playing Saturday, so I don't want to sit
- 6:08here and say that he's for sure playing.
- 6:11Um, so I don't want to get ahead of
- 6:13myself, but
- 6:16you know, this is I look at it from the
- 6:19lens of, you know, right now
- 6:23college basketball coaches are having to
- 6:26operate under the rules and the
- 6:28guidelines that we've been given. And if
- 6:30you can get a judge
- 6:33to
- 6:34was it a restraining order, I guess,
- 6:37file a restraining order against the
- 6:38NCAA, you are within your right to do
- 6:40so.
- 6:41doesn't make it right, it doesn't make
- 6:42it wrong. Um, you know, Baylor and
- 6:46Alabama are the two examples and and
- 6:48Louisville's done it as well. They're
- 6:50doing what they think is in the best
- 6:52interest of their program in order to
- 6:54win basketball games. Like I said,
- 6:56doesn't make it right, doesn't make it
- 6:58wrong. Um, and here's the deal, like in
- 7:03this sport, you have the right to change
- 7:05your mind and change your opinion as the
- 7:07season goes on.
- 7:10for me personally, you know, I think
- 7:12it's crazy.
- 7:15Um,
- 7:18for a couple reasons. one,
- 7:21um, it's just so outside of like the
- 7:24scope of what we've done historically,
- 7:28but two, like I think it makes it, you
- 7:30know, if I were to if we were to do
- 7:32that, and I said this this morning on on
- 7:34radio,
- 7:36I'd have a really hard time looking at
- 7:38the parents of the kids on in our
- 7:40current pro program and saying, "All
- 7:41right, this is why we're doing this."
- 7:43Like, you know, if I brought back Share
- 7:45Cooper, I gotta tell Tahad and Travis
- 7:48that, hey, like, you know, we're
- 7:50bringing bringing back a former pro,
- 7:52he's going to be eating into your
- 7:54minutes and your production. Or if I
- 7:56brought back Jabari Smith, you know,
- 8:00Sebastian, Miss Kareema, you know,
- 8:02Sebastian's been having a great year for
- 8:04us, but you know, you know what I mean?
- 8:07So, and then on top of that, you know,
- 8:09in recruiting, you know, how does that
- 8:11affect recruiting down the road, you
- 8:13know? Um, so, um, but here's what I will
- 8:18say. I don't know what conversations
- 8:21that Nate and Scott have had with their
- 8:23players, if they've had the
- 8:24conversations of, hey, listen, we're
- 8:25going to bring in the best talent
- 8:27regardless of position in order for us
- 8:29to win. If that expectation's been set,
- 8:33then what they're doing, there's no
- 8:34problem with what they're doing. If that
- 8:37expectations been set. I feel like if
- 8:38you have those honest conversations of
- 8:39we're going to bring in the best players
- 8:41and you know regardless of position and
- 8:44regardless of circumstance in order for
- 8:46us to win. If they come in there knowing
- 8:48that then you know I I would have a
- 8:50little more understanding of the
- 8:52situation. Um but yeah, I mean it's just
- 8:56it's uh it's crazy that the NCAA and the
- 8:58SEC can't really do anything about it,
- 9:00you know. So it'll be interesting to see
- 9:02um if he plays this weekend and what
- 9:03impact he does have. Um, so as of right
- 9:07now, no, we're not we're not looking to
- 9:10bring back Jabari and Walker and Dylan
- 9:12and Janai. So JT Thor, yeah, we're not
- 9:15looking to bring those guys back right
- 9:17now. So I'm sure you're going to get
- 9:19asked about it a lot this week, but
- 9:21getting an opportunity now to go against
- 9:22your old friend Todd Golden as as head
- 9:24coaches. Just talk about that, how much
- 9:26you've been you've been looking forward
- 9:27to that. And I know you've mentioned in
- 9:28the past y'all would exchange, you know,
- 9:31text messages and and and have a
- 9:32relationship throughout the season. Has
- 9:34that changed at all now with with you as
- 9:35a as a head coach?
- 9:37>> I mean, he facetimed me yesterday
- 9:38morning um you know, just to
- 9:41congratulate us on our miss game and you
- 9:44know, we have a buddy who's actually on
- 9:46the P PGA tour right now, Lee Hodes, and
- 9:48his caddy is Andrew Medley, who's one of
- 9:50our best friends. Um, so we text this
- 9:53morning about, you know, they're around
- 9:54this morning and like, you know, we
- 9:56just, it's, you know, I'm going to go
- 9:57over and see him and his wife tomorrow
- 9:59for briefly just to say hello and see
- 10:01their kids because they've done that
- 10:02when they've come to Auburn. Um, so
- 10:04yeah, I mean, it's uh, it's it's unique.
- 10:06It's special. you know, he was ops and I
- 10:09was the assistant strength coach here at
- 10:10Auburn, you know, 11 years ago, which is
- 10:13just, you know, kind of crazy how how
- 10:14time has flown and our career paths
- 10:17have, you know, come to, you know, to
- 10:20where they are now. Um, you know, I just
- 10:23have so much respect for TG and
- 10:27everything that he's doing down there.
- 10:28Um, you know, they're one of the top I
- 10:32mean, they're top five team in my
- 10:34opinion. Um they've lost five games by a
- 10:36collective 17 points all the way from
- 10:38home. So um they're one of the elite in
- 10:41college basketball. He's one of the best
- 10:42coaches in college basketball. And uh
- 10:45you know it's it doesn't mean that I
- 10:46don't want to go down there and kick his
- 10:48ass, but you know I just have a lot of
- 10:51love for him and his family and the work
- 10:53that he's done. Um and he's been such a
- 10:56valuable resource to me. you know,
- 10:58everything any any chance that I need
- 11:00to, you know, run something by somebody,
- 11:04you know, he's one of my first calls and
- 11:06he's always been so gracious with his
- 11:07time. So, um it'll be uh you know, it'll
- 11:11be uh it'll be cool. Um but, you know,
- 11:15at the end of the day, you know, when we
- 11:16step in between those lines, you know,
- 11:17he's going to try and beat us and you
- 11:20know, we're going to try and beat them.
- 11:21So, um, but you obviously really proud
- 11:23of, you know, his growth and his
- 11:25development and, you know, all the
- 11:26success that he's had.
- 11:28>> Ted had some great notes, uh, here
- 11:30saying that you guys are leading the
- 11:31country in free throw rate.
- 11:33>> You guys get to the line better than
- 11:34anybody in the country. At what point
- 11:35did you know it was going to be like
- 11:36that? Did you know that before the
- 11:38season that I've got a team that can
- 11:39drive, can get to the line, or was that
- 11:41something you kind of adapted to?
- 11:43>> I mean, obviously like Keshan Hall has
- 11:45always been a guy that's done a really
- 11:46good job at getting to the foul line.
- 11:48you know, Sebastian in high school was
- 11:49really good at getting to the foul line.
- 11:51Um, you know, so I thought, you know,
- 11:54pretty early on we we had we had a
- 11:56chance because we also had guys that
- 11:57could get by their men. Um, which last
- 11:59year we didn't really have as much of.
- 12:01Um, but this year we got three or four
- 12:03guys that we think can get downhill and
- 12:05on a mismatch or, you know, and get to
- 12:07the rim. And anytime we've played off
- 12:09two feet and used shot fakes, there's
- 12:10been positive results. Um, so it's been
- 12:14something that has been really good for
- 12:16us. Uh, it's something that we've done a
- 12:17good job of in SEC play, but also got to
- 12:19understand, you know, that Florida is
- 12:21obviously a different animal, and their
- 12:24two-point field goal percentage is is is
- 12:26really good. It's one of the best in our
- 12:27conference, if not the best. And they're
- 12:30going to make it really difficult for
- 12:31us. So, we um, you know, we still got to
- 12:34do what, you know, what we do best. And
- 12:36um you know it's it also it also helps
- 12:39when you know guys like Murf goes six
- 12:41for seven and Philip makes a couple of
- 12:42his and you know Sebastian makes a
- 12:44couple of his and your best free throw
- 12:46shooters you know he goes 11 for 12 and
- 12:48Tai goes six for six and you know those
- 12:51are all really important things. So um
- 12:53yeah it's something that we've uh you
- 12:56know had a lot of success with success
- 12:58with and it's something that we got to
- 12:59keep doing.
- 13:01you you mentioned it in your statement,
- 13:02but when their guards start going, you
- 13:05know, with all that all that size, what
- 13:06what kind of stands out about them? They
- 13:08seem to be playing a lot better
- 13:09recently, you know, with Boogie and Lee
- 13:11and then Clavsar still been a really
- 13:12good three-point shooter this season.
- 13:14>> Yeah, I mean, Clavsar still gives gives
- 13:16us nightmares from what he did in our
- 13:18gym last year when he banged three
- 13:20threes in the first half. Um, yeah, I
- 13:23mean, you know,
- 13:25Boogie does a great job of just kind of
- 13:27setting the table. um you know, 32
- 13:29assists in conference play and only 10
- 13:31turnovers. You know, defensively, you
- 13:34know, um they both do a good job off the
- 13:36ball making plays. Um and you know,
- 13:39Lee's just playing with more confidence
- 13:41as of late, shooting the ball better as
- 13:43of late. Um
- 13:46you know, I I honestly think like Isaiah
- 13:48Brown has been such a huge factor to
- 13:51their success over the last six games.
- 13:53doesn't get talked about a lot, but just
- 13:55makes the right play, makes the right
- 13:57read, brings another level of
- 13:59physicality to their roster. He's made
- 14:01his last four threes, I think. So, um,
- 14:04but yeah, when those guys are making
- 14:05shots and you know that they're a
- 14:07different basketball team and, um, you
- 14:09know, they've shown over the last five
- 14:12that they're capable of doing so and,
- 14:14um, you know, they're just I think
- 14:15they're just more comfortable, you know,
- 14:19two new guards having to play with that
- 14:20many bigs. You know, you just got it
- 14:21takes time to kind of get to one another
- 14:23and um when you're defending national
- 14:26champions like every single night you're
- 14:27going to get everyone's best shot.
- 14:29That's probably an adjustment for some
- 14:31of those guards, you know what I mean?
- 14:32So um they've done a much better job
- 14:34with it and I think, you know, they're
- 14:36they're being more so the hunter as of
- 14:38late than the hunted and um you that's
- 14:40why they've won, you know, five straight
- 14:42and um are in the position that they're
- 14:44in right now.
- 14:47>> Auburn hasn't been able to win in
- 14:48Gainesville in 30 years. when you think
- 14:50back to all the trips on staff and what
- 14:52comes to mind? Why has it been so
- 14:53difficult to play there?
- 14:56I
- 14:56>> mean, different coaches, different team.
- 14:59So,
- 15:01we always talk about not living in the
- 15:03past, so we're not going to. So, we're
- 15:05worried about practice today.
- 15:09>> Coach, it seemed like Thomas Halo on
- 15:10their team has kind of made that leap as
- 15:12one of their best players. You know,
- 15:13kind of looking at last year's matchup
- 15:15in film, what was kind of the things he
- 15:16did that stuck out to you guys? It
- 15:18kicked our ass. You know, he leads the
- 15:20country in uh playing hard. He leads the
- 15:23country in multiple effort plays. Like
- 15:26he's got such a great feel for like
- 15:28spacing on the floor and where to cut to
- 15:30and when to cut to it. Uh he makes great
- 15:32runs at the offensive glass. You know,
- 15:34we cut that thing down to like eight or
- 15:36nine and we felt like we had some
- 15:37momentum with like five or six minutes
- 15:38left and he just comes running out of
- 15:40nowhere, grabs an offensive rebound,
- 15:42kicks it out to Aberdine and they bang a
- 15:44three and it's over, you know? So, it's
- 15:45just like those types of plays, you
- 15:48know, um are just so, you know,
- 15:50impactful in a 40-minute game. And, you
- 15:54know, he's shooting the three ball
- 15:55better. You know, he's still a great
- 15:57offensive rebounder. He can pass the
- 16:00ball, he can block shots, he leads them
- 16:02in steals. He just he's he's a lot of
- 16:04fun to watch. Um you know, until you
- 16:07have to play against him, then, you
- 16:08know, he's a bit of a nightmare. Um so,
- 16:11yeah, he just he's going to be a great
- 16:13player at the next level one day. his
- 16:14progression from the time he was a
- 16:16freshman to where he's at now is just
- 16:18speaks volumes of what the staff and
- 16:20Todd have done for him and uh you know
- 16:22he plays like he's trying to reward them
