- 2:24I want to start by welcoming into the show a gentleman making his debut on
- 2:29the show and he'd like to be your next commissioner in Kenawha County. It's
- 2:32Dwayne Duncan. Dwayne, good morning, Welcome to the show. Morning Dave,
- 2:36thanks for having me, Thank you for being here. Give us the
- 2:38lowdown on Dwayne Duncan. Who are you? Give? Brio man started out,
- 2:43I grew up in southern West Virginia. Okay. I got asked,
- 2:46what part down near Raleigh County? All right? I just got to ask
- 2:50Logan County boy, all right, Okay, yes, all. Somebody in
- 2:53the green room was asking me about my Southern accent where I was from,
- 2:55So you know, I don't know. I ain't got no Southern accent.
- 2:58Man, I don't know what they're talking about. But anyway, go ahead.
- 3:00So yeah, I grew up down the are in the southern coal fields,
- 3:04and then the nineteen ninety I came to Charleston. I went to the
- 3:07University of Charleston and then proceeded to go to Marshall to get a master's degree.
- 3:10Okay, And what was your field of study, if you don't mind.
- 3:14My field of study biology degree from University of Charleston, and then I
- 3:19went to Marshall to do education, to have an education degree. So that's
- 3:23what I have a master's in special education in school administration. Okay. And
- 3:28so are you an educator or what is it that you do with that?
- 3:30I am in real life. I mean I was currently in a past life
- 3:32an educator, a principal, worked at the state Department of Education. But
- 3:37now I do real estate, real estate development, Okay, So that's what
- 3:38I'm doing now. So why do you want to be a Knawa County Commissioner?
- 3:43I feel like right now is a really good time to be the commissioner.
- 3:46I know a Commissioner Silango, I know Commissioner Wheeler, and I just
- 3:49feel like I'd be the third who could really move things along, work with
- 3:53him in conjunction to get some things going in in Kannak County. We don't
- 3:58know at this point what the current holder of the one that's up this time,
- 4:00Kent Carper, is going to do. But I mean I have not
- 4:04heard. I've heard these is gonna run, not gona run. I don't
- 4:06know what that is. I'm not going to get into all that because I
- 4:09want to talk about about you. What do you see the biggest needs being
- 4:14in Kanagh County Twain? Do you know? I think one of the biggest
- 4:16issues that we have in Kanak County is what are we doing to you know,
- 4:20have families moved to Kanank County and then what are we doing to retain
- 4:24those families in Kanak County? You know? And I you know, that's
- 4:27one of the things I'd like to see us try to do, is fiel
- 4:30that question, figure it out, see see what we could do better for
- 4:32families to attract people. Because we have a lot of resources here. We
- 4:35have wonderful schools. We have colleges institutions that are just right here in our
- 4:41back door. Practically, we have a thriving business downtown the community. Not
- 4:46that we don't need more, because I do believe we do need some more
- 4:49definitely, So I'd like to work on that kind of real estate development opportunity,
- 4:54use my expertise in real estate and real estate development. And you kind
- 4:59of touch on this a little bit. There has been quite a bit of
- 5:00growth here in the Kanal Valley over the last couple of years from job development
- 5:03and creation we are seeing in that. I'm talking about the valley as a
- 5:06whole, not just downtown Charleston, sports tourism with the Shawnee Sports Complex,
- 5:11the proposed Capital Sports centers. So we've had these good things going on.
- 5:16So how do we continue to make these things happen in this area and get
- 5:18more of it, because, as you said, we need more of it,
- 5:20absolutely. I mean, I do believe you know, we're doing a
- 5:24really good job. I think people are starting to take a look at like
- 5:26what we can offer people, and I think our recreation is a huge thing.
- 5:30We are in the Mountain State. We have beautiful surroundings I think taking
- 5:33advantage of that. I think we saw a lot of success with Shawnee Park.
- 5:36I think that demonstrated that, you know, if you build it,
- 5:39they will come. I'm in support of the capital complex that's going to be
- 5:43downtown. I think there's something desperately needed in that area to kind of spur
- 5:47and spark and regenerate that area since we you know, since we have that
- 5:53situation with them that you might be aware of. Yeah, I've heard,
- 5:56just briefly, just heard we're talking to Dwayne Duncan again, who is a
- 5:58candidate for County commission here Republican or Democrat? Republican? Okay, all right,
- 6:03because I know sometimes I feeled asked that and somebody will text me Republican
- 6:08and I'm totally Republican, pro life conservative. Okay, all right. So
- 6:14we we talked a little bit about about the business growth and things of that
- 6:16nature. But as you know, Kanaw is the biggest county in the state,
- 6:19there's a whole lot more out there than in here. And what I
- 6:21mean by that is you got a whole lot of uh rural areas and things
- 6:26like that. What do we do for those people? I mean, because
- 6:28you know, we have. We have issues with flooding continuously in certain areas,
- 6:31and you're you've been around a while, you know all about it.
- 6:34How do we help the areas outside what we think of as Charleston proper so
- 6:40to speak. You know, Here's what I've started to do. I have
- 6:43started already the conversations with mayors in cities and towns on the outskirts of Charleston,
- 6:47realizing that those there's there is important. They're part of Kannak County.
- 6:50And really, if you think about it, you take a town like Clinton
- 6:55and you just see how quaint it is. I don't know if you've ever
- 6:57visited, Oh yeah, there is. When I go through Clinton and and
- 7:00I visit and I go have an ice cream up there at the little ice
- 7:02cream shop. I mean, people are craving this kind of life. I
- 7:05mean there are people in cities who love to come out to these quaint towns,
- 7:10relax, hang out, kayak down the river, things like that.
- 7:14I think we've got to meet. I have started meeting with mayors, meeting
- 7:16with city leaders, champions in their communities. I want to figure out who
- 7:20they are, identify them, and really try to identify young entrepreneurs. And
- 7:25the key would be young entrepreneurs because we're all getting a little bit older.
- 7:28So we need to spur some excitement with our youth because you know, I
- 7:32mean my generation once we I'll be fifty too soon, so I mean,
- 7:35once our generation gets to a certain age, we need youth to back that
- 7:40up. And that's what I've been doing, trying to spur real estate and
- 7:43Charleston backing people, helping people get started in business. And there have been,
- 7:47you know, a lot of studies that have been done about just what
- 7:50you mentioned about West Virginia as a whole, not just canall County being a
- 7:55place where people may want to come. Now that people, you know,
- 7:57COVID showed us that people can work remotely. They are craving the things that
- 8:01we already have here in all of West Virginia, from the streams to the
- 8:05mountain, things that people like you and I may have taken for granted all
- 8:09these years. They want that. I was gonna say, Dave, I
- 8:11have friends who come from all over the country, all over the world to
- 8:13visit me in my little slice of having over on Davis Creek. I have
- 8:16a little farm over there at thirty two acres and I am telling you without
- 8:20fail every time they come to visit me, they are very endous. They're
- 8:24endous. They hate to get back to their city lives or another country they
- 8:26love. They love West Virginia. Doctors that I talk to who are from
- 8:31Dubai in places they come here, they love this place. I mean they
- 8:33love the If you think about it, you can live. It's easy to
- 8:37live here. I've always said the people I've really not met people who are
- 8:41not unkind. We're a kind group of people here in Kanan County, West
- 8:46Virginians anyway, but here in Kanon County in particular, I've always felt welcome.
- 8:50So how do we go about marketing this area to other areas? I
- 8:54mean, that's a BIG's that's a big I know that the county commissioners we
- 8:56have now I think do a pretty good job. Well, we got to
- 8:58do even better than what they do. Not again, I'm not throwing off
- 9:03on that they're doing a great job. Really they do a great job of
- 9:05marketing in this area. But how do we how do we get people from
- 9:07those areas you mentioned interested in Kanah County because there's a lot of growth going
- 9:11on around soate of West Virginia right now. But a lot of it seems
- 9:15like it's going up north, it's going to Morgantown in places like that.
- 9:18How do we get these people in Kanah Valley? Do you know what?
- 9:20I think? I think we do. We're good. It's we can't let
- 9:24it be a kept secret anymore. I do believe we can be. I
- 9:26believe we should be in Kana County probably. I think we should be,
- 9:30in my opinion, the most viable county in the state. And I think
- 9:33we should be. I think we have all the elements here. I think
- 9:35it's just it's I think a key to that, Dave is reaching out to
- 9:39these community leaders, meeting with community community leaders, listening to them, actually
- 9:45listening, developing plans, and then acting on those plans to make this happen.
- 9:48I mean, look for resources for them, figure out what they can
- 9:52do, what they can't do, what they need. And I don't know
- 9:54that current commission's doing that. That's just something that's the way I operate,
- 9:58listening and then helping people connect the dots. Boy Duncan is with us.
- 10:03He again, he's a Republican candidate for County Commission. The Dave Allen showing
- 10:05five any lie Bright to you part by Bridge Valley. Are you interested in

- 10:28do you got? We're getting all of that up and running. I just
- 10:31announced my candidacy a few days ago, so that well, I'll be forthcoming.
- 10:35Stick around because I'll be in your community soon, starting next week.
- 10:39All right, Well, Dwayne, it's been a pleasure having you on the
- 10:43show. I'm going to give you final thirty seconds uninterrupted. Why should people
- 10:46vote for Dwayne Duncan for Kanah County Commission? I think if people in Kanak
- 10:52County are ready to have someone who's not a career politician, he's ready to
- 10:56sit down with him help them tackle the issues. You know, Dave,
- 11:00we've got to start thinking about families, hard working families in Kanak County,
- 11:03what their struggles are, what they're going through. As a teacher, as
- 11:07an educator, as a public servant. I've seen that. So we've got
- 11:11to help them with all of those things so that they can focus on the
- 11:13things like growth in their community. We've got to help them with their personal
- 11:16lives. So that's what I'm going to focus on the people, like just
- 11:20focus on people, focus on making their lives better, reducing taxes, anything
- 11:26we can do to help alleviate the stress and the financial burdens on families in
- 11:30Kannak County. I think we have to do it. Dwayne Uncan again,
- 11:33Republican candidate for County Commission. I appreciate it. I appreciate you stopping by

- 14:46John Hoover is here, candidate for Putnam County Circuit Court Judge. He joins
- 14:50us Now, John, good morning, welcome to the show. Good morning,
- 14:52and thanks for having me. This morning. Thank you for being here.
- 14:56Give us the background on John Hoo's John Hoovery many people in Udham County
- 15:00know who I am, but lifelong resident of Putnam County. I was a
- 15:03little young blondhair boy that grew up in Woodland Forest over in Winfield, graduated
- 15:09from Winfield High School, and went off to the Army, served in the
- 15:13US Army Jag Corps. Thank you for your service, by the way,
- 15:16I appreciate that, and then returned back to West Virginia to practice law and
- 15:24raise my family in Hurricane, West Virginia. All right, So you're unlike
- 15:28a lot of people that live in Putnam County like myself, you're actually from
- 15:31there, actually actually from there. Played sports at Winfield High School. I've
- 15:35lived in various parts of the county. I know the county from Bancroft to
- 15:39Hurricane to Night Road to Buffalo, so I know the county very well.
- 15:43The thing about Putnam County, what I always say, is is that,
- 15:46and I guess this is true of a lot of counties. I've lived there
- 15:48for ten years now. People have a tendency to think that Puttnham County is
- 15:52Tys Valley, which which is where I live, and it is that's a
- 15:54big part of it. But there's a lot of bang Cross, there's a
- 15:56lot of red houses, there's a lot of Freight your Bottom, and a
- 16:00lot of other places in there as well. That's that's correct. And you
- 16:04know, I view Putnham County as the most idyllic county in the state of
- 16:07West Virginia. And I based that on the fact that I've litigated cases throughout
- 16:11the state of West Virginia, and it always dawns on me that Putnam County,
- 16:17in all areas, whether it's socioeconomic or judicial, we set the standard
- 16:22for this state and it is just an idyllic place to live. It has
- 16:26always been an idyllic place to live, regardless of where you whether you live
- 16:30north of the River or south of the river. And I want to serve
- 16:33Putnham County in the same capacity as I did in the US Jack Corps.
- 16:37The next Circuit Court judge for Division one, I want to talk about that.
- 16:40So why why make this decision at this point in your life to be
- 16:42the circuit judge of Putnam County. Well, we had, we talked earlier
- 16:48and this has been a dream of mine ever since I had a conversation with
- 16:52former Judge Hobby Spouting, and Judge Spouting really pushed me into the professional law
- 17:00and I saw the type of judge that he was. And as I've litigated
- 17:03cases throughout the state of West Virginia and including Putnham County, I would love
- 17:08to bring his standards back to Putnham County as their Circuit court judge. And
- 17:14I believe that I'm at a time in my career with my experience in all
- 17:19facets of the law, whether it be civil, criminal, abuse, neglect,
- 17:22or juvenile to serve Putnam County in that capacity. I know you just
- 17:26officially signed up to run. What are the plans for the campaign strategy?
- 17:30Because I talked to a lot of judicial candidates here. I've had a few
- 17:34on this week as a matter of fact, that are going to be serving
- 17:37in one way or the other in the court system. And it's not like
- 17:40your traditional campaigns. You know, you can't really go out and trash opponents
- 17:44and things, at least you're not supposed to do things like that. So
- 17:47what's the campaign strategy? I mean a lot of people already know you,
- 17:49but there's some that don't. Yeah, there's some that don't. And really,
- 17:55what I'm going to do and what my focus is is is what's my
- 17:57vision for Putnam County and what the vision that I have in contrast to what
- 18:03currently exists. There's going to be a lot of door to door. Unfortunately,
- 18:07I have a face for radios. I think a lot of people in
- 18:08Putnam County are going to get to know me and experience me for firsthand.
- 18:12But we're going to do We're going to walk it. I'm going to earn
- 18:15every vote, every vote north of the River, south of the River,
- 18:18by meeting people individually at their homes, at civic events, things of that
- 18:23nature. And also they'll be a heavy social media presence. I mean,
- 18:27that's the time, the current time that we live in. I'm a lifelong
- 18:32Republican. I have been unabashedly a Republican. I didn't just simply change parties
- 18:38to run in this race. I am proud of my Republican values. But
- 18:44I also think that my vision for the Circuit Court is attractive to everyone regardless
- 18:52of political perspective. On the spectrum, We're going to have a consistently hard
- 18:57working circuit courts. As the judge, I am going to hand down the
- 19:03maximum penalty for any crime in Putnam County that is allowable by law. Obviously,
- 19:07we have preceentencing reporting and things of that nature, but I can tell
- 19:11you it will quickly be known that if you commit a crime in Putnam County
- 19:15and mister Hoover is your judge, you can expect the maximum criminal penalty allowable
- 19:22by law. What other changes, if any, would you bring to the
- 19:26cervic courts as well. I think the biggest change that I can bring is
- 19:30I'm going to work. I think circuit courts should be accountable to the citizens
- 19:34of the county. And what I mean by that is, if you show
- 19:38up on a Monday or a Friday, whether it's in the am or the
- 19:41PM, you can expect that I'm going to be on the bitch and then
- 19:45I'm going to be effectively administrating justice. The problems that we have now and
- 19:48then it's not just in Putnam County but also statewide, is we have very
- 19:53slow court dockets. And I don't understand that I had horror continuances, and
- 20:00we have far too many continuances in civil cases. We have far too many
- 20:03continuances in criminal cases. And that's just not going to happen with me.
- 20:08The Supreme Courts promulgated time standards for both criminal cases and civil cases. The
- 20:14rules and the laws are already on the books. We just need to effectively
- 20:18administrate them. And that's going to happen under me. We're not going to
- 20:22have I've inacdotally. I've heard from people all over the county and it's always
- 20:26well, my case took too long, or there was a continuance, or
- 20:29this order wasn't entered an appropriate time. That simply isn't going to happen with
- 20:33me as your Circuit court judge. Talking to John Hoover again, who is
- 20:37a candidate for Circuit Court Judge of Putnam County, the Dave Allen showing five
- 20:41eighty life right to a part by Meeks Realty Group is a locally owned real

- 21:00biggest challenges facing the court system these days? I don't necessarily mean a Putnam
- 21:06county, but I mean just the court system in American general. What are
- 21:08some of the biggest challenges you know? I get this question quite a bit
- 21:11from individuals and enduring meetings with businesses, and I think the biggest challenge goes
- 21:17back to what I just said. We have a court system that is bogged
- 21:21down with litigation. When I first started litigating cases, you had an expectation
- 21:26that you could have the case litigated whether and I'm speaking in the civil context,
- 21:32you had an expectation that that case would be resolved within twelve to fourteen
- 21:34months. I just sat in a scheduling conference, and I'm not going to
- 21:38identify the circuit clurp, but I just set in a scheduling conference just yesterday,
- 21:42and the first available date for a trial was twenty twenty six. Now
- 21:48we just entered twenty twenty four, and it's disheartening for me to have to
- 21:52go back and tell my client, you're going to have to wait two years.
- 21:55Maybe he could go leave thee and what goes on in their life during
- 21:57that too, Exactly that that's the biggest issue that I have is and I'll
- 22:03put it in the context of a civil case. If you're a victim and
- 22:04you're in a PI auto case, there are going to be litigation costs that
- 22:08accumulate. Well, those costs are passed on hopefully to the victim in a
- 22:15settlement or a favorable trial verdict. Well, the costs are going to be
- 22:19demnimous if we handle that case within twelve to fourteen months. But they exponentially
- 22:25get higher and higher with each continuance and each year of delay, to the
- 22:29point where that's less money in the victim's pocket. It's less money. It
- 22:33costs more to litigate the cases for both parties, and that has an economic
- 22:37impact throughout the counties. And we have major major issues with bogged down court.
- 22:44Dokas and I firmly believe that if we returned to just administrating the time
- 22:48standards that the Supreme Court is handed down to us, we could rectify that.
- 22:53And interestingly, I echoed hobby Spouting earlier, and he's my model and
- 22:57my standard eating get a continuance and Hobbys Court, you knew going into the
- 23:03scheduling conference there's not going to be a continuance. There simply isn't going to
- 23:06be a continuance outside of the death in a family or something of that nature.
- 23:10It wasn't going to happen. And that's the type of court that I'm
- 23:11going to administer. We'll talk to you about drugs. Obviously, drugs are
- 23:15a scourage. We all know that. I don't know what the situation is
- 23:18getting any better. It just seems it doesn't get better. It's just the
- 23:22products change. You know. Back in the day, it was pills,
- 23:26especially in certain areas of the state, worse than others. And it was
- 23:30heroin, and it was fentanyl, And that's kind of where we are right
- 23:33now. How do we as a as a judge a little late do You
- 23:37can't do a whole lot to prevent people from using drugs, But as a
- 23:38judge, how do you how do you handle the drug crisis? Well,
- 23:41tangentially, like I said earlier, if you commit a crime in Putnam County,
- 23:45you can expect the harshest most maximum penalty allowable by the statue. And
- 23:52that's how I'm going to attack the drug problem. We've seen a commensurate rise
- 23:56in drug use throughout West Virginia nationally, with also a commensurate rise in alternative
- 24:03sentencing directives and initiatives to try to handle drug related offenses. You're probably familiar
- 24:11with drug courts and things of that nature, and I know your listeners are
- 24:14as well. What we're seeing recipiism rates of seventy to eighty percent in those
- 24:19programs. Those programs have been around for quite some time, maybe four to
- 24:23five to six years. That tells me, as just an average Joe,
- 24:27those programs aren't working, and I think we probably need to return to let's
- 24:33administrate this problem through the criminal process. Like I said before, I think
- 24:37if you as a community have a reputation that you're just not going to put
- 24:41up with that type of conduct and that you're going to penalize it criminally through
- 24:47both aggressive prosecution and the administration of swift effective criminal sentencing, it'll have a
- 24:53much deeper impact on the drug problem than what we're currently experiencing today. John.
- 24:59Where can people learn more about your campaign? Oh? I would love
- 25:02for them to go to Hooverfjudge dot com. That's our website. It's went

- 25:25for Putnam County. And I'm really excited to share that door to door and
- 25:27at all the civil civic events that I can. Give me thirty seconds uninterrupted
- 25:33by me. Why should someone vote for John Hoover for Putnham County Circuit Court

- 26:00in a timely and efficient way with maximum criminal penalties and also addressing the backloged
- 26:08abuse and neglect and juvenile cases with swift, hard working judge. And that's
- 26:14why I'm running. John. We wish you'd it's been a pleasure having another
- 26:18show. We wish it the best of luck with the campaign out there campaigning,

- 30:14for West Virginia Secretary to stay Brian, good morning. How are you?
- 30:17Good morning, sir? How are you? I am doing fine? Thank
- 30:18you for me. It's like a Putnam County theme today. Man. We
- 30:21just had somebody that's running for judge on a couple of moments ago, and
- 30:23now we got you running out of Putnam County running for Secretary of State.
- 30:29Yes, sir, how are you doing to that? I'm doing I'm doing
- 30:32good. So it's official. I found to get up to Charleston and do
- 30:37it as I was going to do it today. The baby dog showed up
- 30:41and signed up Trump and all that, and I thought, well, I'm
- 30:44gonna get lost in the crowd there and then and then the snow hit and
- 30:48and we got plenty of work here at the office getting ready to prepare for
- 30:52the upcoming election. So yeah, that was asking you to be my next
- 30:55point. You you announ saw on this show a long long time ago that
- 30:59you would be running for Secretary of State. You've been serving as Putnham County
- 31:02Clerk for some time, and now you have made it official. How many
- 31:04terms have you served as clerk of Putnam County? Brian. I'm currently in
- 31:08my fourth term as County Clerk for Putnam County. I had two terms as
- 31:15master prior to that, but for four terms county clerk. So I think
- 31:22that I think it's kind of entry. I was thinking about this last night,
- 31:26Brian. All the people that you've seen that have walked into your office
- 31:30at the courthouse to sign on the dotted line to run for office, now
- 31:33yourself are signing or have signed to run at the state Capitol's that's got to
- 31:38be kind of different for you. Yes, sir, it's the first time
- 31:41doing that. Have you told me two years ago that I'd be up with
- 31:45the capital signing up to run for Secretary of State? I told you were
- 31:48crazy. But you know, just looking at it, looking at the candidates
- 31:52and the different people that thought may run, I just I feel like my
- 32:00you know, twenty years of managing elections here at the county level, working
- 32:05with pole workers, working with my team, there's there's no candidate in the
- 32:09race that can compare to my experience. When it comes to managing the public
- 32:15office with different departments within you know, employees, as an elected officer who
- 32:22has the answer to the people, and I've answered to the people time and
- 32:27time again. I'm proud of the work we do here in Putnam County,
- 32:30and I'm blessed to work for the people of Puttenham County. But I just
- 32:34fulfilled that people of West Virginia deserves somebody that's is you know, politics is
- 32:39early there, you know, because it's part of the process. I'm here
- 32:45for the work. I've already pledged that I'm not going to be running for
- 32:47any higher offices. And Secretary of State I want to do it because I
- 32:52feel I've got the knowledge to move the office forward and in a good direction
- 33:00and basically kept put the wheels on the bus and hit the ground running.
- 33:02From day one. It was a crowded field. At least it was at
- 33:07one time. It's still somewhat crowded compared to some of the other races for
- 33:10Secretary of State at Sate to West Virginia. Brian on the Republican side,
- 33:14we know already earlier this week one person dropped out of the race, that
- 33:16being Deuletgod Chris pretty announced on this show Monday that he would no longer be
- 33:21seeking the office of Secretary of State, but would attempt instead to run for
- 33:23state Senate. Now that leads former Legislator Ken Reid, Chris Warner, who
- 33:29is the brother of current Secretary of State Macwater, and former House Minority Leader
- 33:31Doug scaff and the race for secretary. Important to note, though, that
- 33:35all candidates have until midnight Saturday to file, so there may be more that
- 33:38jump in of those people that I mentioned, Brian, I don't exactly expecting
- 33:44you to trash anybody anything like that, but other people I mentioned, you
- 33:46feel pretty confidently though that you are the one for the job to talk about
- 33:50that. You know, I believe they are all good people. Their some
- 33:55that know better than the others. For me, it's not politics first.
- 34:00I'm not part of the trost and in crowd. I'm not. I'm not
- 34:05your typical statewide candidate. You know, I live paycheck to paycheck. You
- 34:10know, my wife and I work hard just to you know, buy the
- 34:14prom dresses from a junior in high school, and and and you know,
- 34:17provide for our kids, and and you know, when the gas prices go
- 34:21up, I feel in my budget this the same way as most West Virginians
- 34:24do. Uh. But I also feel like, you know, it doesn't
- 34:28always have to be the same same little Samuel and the same people, uh.
- 34:31And that's in the circle get intelected to these these state offices. And
- 34:37if there was ever a chance for the people in West Virginia to have somebody
- 34:42that's not in the inner circle or interclique, that that knows the job that
- 34:47I can't think of any other job in the world that that mimics the Secretary
- 34:52of State other than a county clerk, because you know, to the secretary
- 34:54state multiple divisions, county clerk multiple divisions. We both work with elections.
- 35:00I'll know, just through my knowledge of twenty years of mannings and elections here
- 35:06when people come to me with suggestions or problems or different things like that,
- 35:10I don't know the nuts and bolts of it to make a good decision or
- 35:14to talk with them about it in a sensible manner rather than having to learn
- 35:19it, you know, the first two years and then run for office the
- 35:22second two years. You know, it's about the work for me first and
- 35:25then and then politics is just part of the process. Eight ten minutes away

- 35:45lot of time out on the campaign trail. What have you What have you
- 35:47heard when you've been out talking to people around in the state of West Virginia
- 35:51so far about the Secretary of State's office and about the race. Well,
- 35:55people love my story. They love the fact that I put my pants on
- 35:59just like they do. Uh. They love the fact that I'm humble in
- 36:02that you know, Uh, I don't I'm not owed to anything, but
- 36:09you know, I still have the passion to serve. They like the fact
- 36:14that of the experience aspect of it, and they like the fact that hey,
- 36:17it's a it's a different choice. You know, we don't have to
- 36:21keep on the same old Samuel. I've been to more fairs, carnivals,
- 36:27parades, and and UH dinners than all three of the opponents combined. Right
- 36:34now, UH and I knew that I was gonna have to get out on
- 36:37the road early and work on that because I wouldn't have the self financing aspect
- 36:43of it, or the you know, the the infrastructure uh that's built through
- 36:52the politics standpoint. I've got to rely on the people in the in the
- 36:58little white houses that go to work every day, uh, to grassroots to
- 37:04tell other people. I got to rely on, you know, other county
- 37:07officials to tell people about me. I'm the only one that you know,
- 37:14somebody could call somebody in Putnam County and say, hey, Kyle's Brian do
- 37:17down there? You know? Is he a good clerk? You know?
- 37:21Is his office responsive? Uh? Has he? You know, how does
- 37:24he perform? I've got the resume, you and and I've got the and
- 37:30I've got the that you know that the references that people could call and uh
- 37:36and check on me. Uh. The the others you know that they don't
- 37:39necessarily have that. They've always been in private business. They are always in
- 37:43uh hidden behind layers of bureaucracy, and uh, there's no accountability. You
- 37:47know, if if I mess up election, it's gonna be on front pages
- 37:51of paper and everybody knows that you know if I if I'm not a good,
- 37:54uh local candidate here, I wouldn't be in office for as long as
- 37:59I've been. And so I just you know, I'm not hopefully I'm not
- 38:06coming to office being harsh on the to the other candidates or anything like that.
- 38:13But I'm not going to minimize what I have to offer to the people
- 38:16in West Virginia. And I hope that the people offer the people in West
- 38:22Virginia would appreciate it and give me the opportunity to work for them, and
- 38:30I would appreciate their support and their vote, and please talk to their friends
- 38:34and family and say, hey, let's let's give this guy I try.
- 38:38Before we let you go, tell us about Brianwood, the guy. I
- 38:40mean, we know that you've been a four term Putnam County clerk who were
- 38:44a magistrate before that, but personally, just just talk about your personal life
- 38:47a little bit. Who is Brian would Well, I'm a faith based person.
- 38:52You know, I'm a lifelong West Virginia. I'm a lifelong Republican.
- 38:57I've been married for twenty two years to my life. We like wife Beth
- 39:00and uh super proud of her. She's my best cheerleader. And I love
- 39:05her to that. I've got two wonderful kids. They've got one that's a
- 39:08junior at Winfield High School and uh she's in love for the first time.
- 39:14So trying to get used to that, yeah, and trying to swallow the
- 39:17calls of the you know, the prom dresses and things like that. And
- 39:22then I got a son that's that ford Eisen High right now, is getting
- 39:24ready to graduate next week. So we're excited about going down there and seeing
- 39:29him graduate and come back and see what life has to hold for him.
- 39:32Uh So I'm very extremely a proud proud of him as well. I had
- 39:37served as the president of the County Clerks Association and the media past president of
- 39:42the County Clerks Association. So I've got, you know, good relationships with
- 39:49the county clerks throughout the whole state and uh and I know what their needs
- 39:52are, I know what they're you know, when they're when they're hurting,
- 39:57I know they're hurting, and when they're when they're doing all, I know
- 40:00they're doing well. And the uh So I got that good communication. You
- 40:04know, the elections worked through the clerks and then down and run downhill to
- 40:08the citizens through through the poll workers throughout the state, and so I've got
- 40:15that rapport there. I also serve as a as a board member of the
- 40:20Western Virginia Association of the Counties. I'm on the West Virginia have a grant
- 40:24board, which is you know, basically divisi up federal money, uh to
- 40:30help support local elections. I'm a member of the Elections Assistants Commission for the
- 40:37State of Westernian local representative for the State of Western Elections Assistants Commission. And
- 40:44there's two representatives. There's one on state level and then one on the county
- 40:46level. And on that Uh, I'm just proud of, you know,
- 40:52proud of what I offered the people of Western or you know, Putndam County.
- 40:58And and I don't know, I'm excited about the opportunity to run.
- 41:06I know it's gonna be hard. It's gonna be hard. You know.
- 41:07I feel like I'm running with one arm tied behind my back because you know,
- 41:12I will not give up the the tension to detail here in Putnam County
- 41:17when managing this primary election, because the people Western Putnam County deserve that,
- 41:25you know. So so we're going to keep to make sure we daughter eisee
- 41:30and cross our teas here in Puttnam County. But we're also going to give
- 41:34the people we're a chance to vote for somebody that can hit the ground running
- 41:39from day one. Well, Brian, I wish you the best of luck.
- 41:42I know you've got a lot of work to do out on the campaign
- 41:44training. You got to get back to your your regular job right now as

- 47:25with talk Line. Brad will be there from the AARP Broadcast Center. Also
- 47:29Senator Patricia Rucker and more talk Line with Hobby KIRCHWLL ten o six from the
- 47:34Belly of the Beast at the Capitol. Let me get this in real quick.
- 47:36The giant potholes are back again, particularly sixty four east at the Nitro
- 47:39Entryway. I saw cars line up like five or more this morning, all
- 47:44with busted tires on my drive in around seven fifteen or so of this morning.
- 47:46To be careful we're traveling in that area because next up we'll be the
- 47:51band aid repair, which you know what that means. That means we put
- 47:53a little band aid on it and then that snarls up traffick again. Then
- 47:57we have the next snow, which causes more potholes, etc. Etc.
- 48:00Etc. The Dave Alan Show on five of E Live is brought to you

- 48:15to night. Deale Cooper's with us Reds caravan. Man, it's back,
- 48:17yeah, Man, always look forward to this. You and I did this
- 48:20last year and had a good time. Had a few technical difficulties last year,
- 48:23and so this year we've gotten ahead of the queue a little bit,
- 48:28and so we're going to be over there, set up at their appropriate location
- 48:30and everything. So it's going to be a great broadcast tonight. Jeff Jenkins
- 48:32will be over there hosting the thing. You're going to be over there as
- 48:36well. The Reds are coming to town. They had a couple of changes.
- 48:38I want to get these out real fast. Not that too bad of
- 48:43one. Cam Collier is no longer coming. He's a minor league prospect for
- 48:45the Reds, but he's being replaced by Julian agiar who is one of the
- 48:50Reds. He was their Pittuer of the Year last year in the minor league,
- 48:52so he's a bonafide prospect. So he's going to be coming to town
- 48:54and said, and also for those of you that care about the executive,
- 48:58Sean Pender is going to be here. He's the senior advisor to the President
- 49:00of Baseball Operations instead of Sam Grossman, the President of Baseball Operations. And
- 49:05Benzinger's there too, Yeah, Todd Benzinger is still coming. You know Brian
- 49:09Bradley who works with us, and he's a super Reds mister mister Red's Wilfi.
- 49:14A lot of people knew him when he was a work mascot work for
- 49:16us. He does all the Reds events with us. But he was kind
- 49:19of grumbling to me last night. Benzinger's going to be here with the caravan.
- 49:23And one of the last fan events that Brian attended he paid for the
- 49:28autograph and autographs tonight. Of course we're free, so thanks free by the
- 49:30way, exactly, the whole thing's free. You can just show up.
- 49:34Obviously, we're going to be on air. It's going to start at six
- 49:36o'clock. The festivity start over there at five thirty, but we won't miss
- 49:38anything all that important. Before we go on air at six, we'll carry
- 49:42the Q and A, and then Jeff will have exclusive interviews with each of
- 49:44the folks that are going to come by. You can go over there though,
- 49:46at five thirty or before then and meet some of the players, shake
- 49:50some hands, get to know some of the folks with the Reds, and
- 49:52then participate in the Q and A. Say hi to Dave and Jeff while
- 49:54you're over there too. We'll be over there all right, Coop, I
- 49:55appreciate it. Man, thanks a lot. Read's caravan again starts at five.
- 50:00We'll be life in there starting at six. It's free an opportunity for
- 50:01you to come and hang out with the Reds tonight over the Colosseuma Convention Center.
- 50:06I got to get this in because I'm way short on time here.
- 50:09Yesterday at the Capitol, I was on the air while the public hearing was
- 50:13going on on HB forty six to fifty four that would make institutions such as
- 50:16schools, museums, and libraries criminally liable for displaying so called obscene material.
- 50:22Now, if it passes those institutions that I mentioned could be subject to prosecution
- 50:27for the distribution and for the display of so called again obscene materials to miners.
- 50:31Now. I went back later though, and watched the public comments section,
- 50:36and oh my, uh, let me, I have seen a lot
- 50:42in my time, not only in the media and the radio business, but
- 50:45also being around the world of politics as I have, and I don't know
- 50:47that I've ever heard phrases like blank eating and blank plugs, et cetera,
- 50:53et cetera on the chamber floor. And let me just close, let me,
- 50:58let me just say this. I am all for keep these items away
- 51:00from kids, but at the expense of possibly fining or jailing the already grossly
- 51:07underpaid library staffs. And by the way, for the grandmas that spoke and
- 51:12the other people, I applaud you for getting out there and speaking and speaking
- 51:15your mind and being a part of the process. But you do know that
- 51:20your kid can literally access anything on that iPhone or tablet that sadly a lot
- 51:27of parents placing kids' hands from the time that they were born as a babysitter.
- 51:32So just so we're clear here, okay, go ahead and take away
- 51:37their iPads and their iPhones if you really want to make a difference. And
- 51:43we have this foster care crisis in our state. We talked about it on
- 51:46the show. You know at nauseum, our kids' test scores are abysmal.
- 51:52But this is what we're worried about. Again. I'm all for my opinion,
- 51:55my opinion on it. I'm all for keeping this stuff out of the
- 51:59hands of my mind. But you better take their iPhones and you better take
- 52:02their iPad because trust me, they're not going to the library to look at
- 52:06porn. They're setting on their couch. All right. That's a davitorial by
- 52:12the way. All right, gotta go. Thank you so much for Ryan
- 52:15Nicholson, Brian Wood, John Hoover, Dwayne Duncan, and Dale Cooper.
- 52:20We'll see over at the Reds Caravan tonight again. We start at five point
- 52:22thirty, will go live from their Jeff Jenkins, myself and others starting at
