- 0:12Hello friends, it is Sean here. It is a happy Friday, well done
- 0:18for making it to the end of the week I hope.
- 0:20I hope that your week has been filled with opportunities and
- 0:24good things and that the weekend ahead is looking like a, oh, a
- 0:28time just to rest for a moment and to regroup at the end of
- 0:32another big week. And although it doesn't feel
- 0:35like it's that late in the year, I reckon there's probably some
- 0:38shops already playing Christmas carols and we start to plow our
- 0:43way toward the very busy end of the year as we enter the last
- 0:46couple of months. But we are not quite there yet,
- 0:49and we are going to, as is our way, read a Psalm together.
- 0:54And this is one of the Psalms with quite a lengthy preamble,
- 0:58so when they know exactly what's going on.
- 1:00You ready? This is a Psalm for the choir
- 1:03director, a Psalm of the Descendants of Korah.
- 1:06A song to be sung to the tune The Suffering of Affliction.
- 1:11A Psalm of Hemmam, the Ezrahite. Ah, yeah, that old tune, The
- 1:17Suffering of Affliction. That was a catchy tune, wasn't
- 1:20it really upbeat, right? Ah, the suffering of affliction.
- 1:24This is a Psalm of lament, so that is an appropriate tune for
- 1:28it to be sung to. I'm not going to sing to you
- 1:31because that would be lots of suffering and affliction for
- 1:34everyone. So I am going to read and we are
- 1:37going to share together as the psalmist cries out in the midst
- 1:42of their heartache and difficulty.
- 1:45This is a prayer for help in the midst of despair.
- 1:49This is Psalm 88. Oh Lord God of my salvation, I
- 2:05cry out to you by day. I come to you at night.
- 2:10Now hear my prayer. Listen to my cry, for my life is
- 2:15full of troubles and death draws near.
- 2:19I am as good as dead. Like a strong man with no
- 2:22strength left. They have left me among the
- 2:26dead, and I lie like a corpse in a grave.
- 2:30I am forgotten. Cut off from your care.
- 2:34You have thrown me into the lowest pit, into the darkest
- 2:38depths. Your anger weighs me down.
- 2:43With wave after wave. You have engulfed me.
- 2:48You have driven my friends away by making me repulsive to them.
- 2:53I am in a trap with no way of escape.
- 2:58My eyes are blinded by my tears. Each day I beg for your help, O
- 3:03Lord, I lift my hands to you for mercy.
- 3:08Are your wonderful deeds of any use to the dead?
- 3:12Do the dead rise up and praise you?
- 3:15Can those in the grave declare your unfailing love?
- 3:20Can they proclaim your faithfulness in the place of
- 3:24destruction? Can the darkness speak of your
- 3:28wonderful deeds? Can anyone in the land of
- 3:31forgetfulness talk about your righteousness?
- 3:34Oh Lord, I cry out to you. I will keep on pleading day by
- 3:40day. Oh Lord, why do you reject me?
- 3:44Why do you turn your face from me?
- 3:47I have been sick and close to death since my youth.
- 3:52I stand helpless and desperate before your terrors.
- 3:56Your fierce anger has overwhelmed me.
- 4:00Your terrors have paralyzed me. They swirl around me like
- 4:04floodwaters All day long. They have engulfed me
- 4:09completely. You have taken away my
- 4:13companions and loved ones. Darkness is my closest friend,
- 4:29Lord. You know only too well that
- 4:32sometimes it can feel like wave after wave after wave hits us in
- 4:39our lives, just as the psalmist laments.
- 4:44And when it just seems like there's no hope, Lord, may we be
- 4:48inspired by this psalmist to continue to cry out to you.
- 4:55Because in our darkest hour, there you still are with us.
- 4:59And when it feels like all hope is lost, there you are, our
- 5:05greatest hope. And when it feels like darkness
- 5:09is our only friend, there you are offering us your
- 5:15companionship and consolation. Thank you for your unending
- 5:22companionship and lordship over whatever challenges it is that
- 5:27we face. We praise you, our sovereign
- 5:32God, on the mountaintops and the hardest, lowest valleys, for you
- 5:38are sovereign. It's in your name that we pray.
- 5:44Amen.
