- 0:01Hey everybody, welcome to the good morning from the Chicken
- 0:04Coop podcast. My name is Kim Johnson and I am
- 0:07a mastermindset coach, creative strategist, and also happened to
- 0:10be a farmer. This is my chicken coop and I
- 0:12come out here every day to record a podcast to teach
- 0:16distinctions, possibilities, new ways of thinking, and just bring
- 0:20some joy into the world. So welcome to the coop and let's
- 0:23start your day off in a fantastic way.
- 0:27Hey everybody, good morning. Little bit later, sun's up
- 0:30freezing out here at the Chicken Coop.
- 0:32But I'm out here with the girls and I want to share something
- 0:36interesting with you because I have learned so much about life
- 0:41from dealing with chicken poop. I know it sounds crazy, but it
- 0:45really is true. And chicken poop is something
- 0:48that when you have even a few chickens, you have to deal with
- 0:50because they're birds and they poop a lot.
- 0:53And I have 52 chickens currently, which means I
- 0:58currently have a lot of chicken poop.
- 0:59Now I'm, I am very blessed to have a fenced in farm and that
- 1:03we created on five and a quarter acres.
- 1:05So this, and I've worked my entire life to get this.
- 1:10This was a dream that I manifested and worked my heinie
- 1:14off for. And it, it, it is everything
- 1:18that I've ever wanted. And of course, because I am in a
- 1:20growth mindset, I always want more.
- 1:22And I would love to have 10 acres, but right now five and a
- 1:25quarter acres fenced in. And they are allowed to free
- 1:28range on that, which means their poop is everywhere.
- 1:31Not to mention they have a coop that's very big.
- 1:34It's like 12 by 22, I think 12 by 2 or 24, I can't remember
- 1:39which it is. And when that gets shut up at
- 1:41night, there's poop in there. And then they have a run, which
- 1:44is fenced in yet again to keep them safe overnight.
- 1:47Not that they're out, but it's fenced in and there's poop in
- 1:50there when they hang out there. So I am dealing with poop a lot.
- 1:54And I've recognized that having them has taught me that dealing
- 1:59with the poop sooner rather than later is always a good thing.
- 2:03So every morning I come out and I scrape down if it's on their
- 2:07stairs, they have stairs that go up to their rafters.
- 2:11So they can, they don't have to fly up and down.
- 2:13They can take the stairs, which they do.
- 2:15It's actually more like a ladder than stairs, but it's kind of
- 2:18like stairs. It's kind of weird how my
- 2:20husband built it, but it's great for them.
- 2:22And they pop right up and they pop right down.
- 2:24So nobody gets hurt in the process.
- 2:25But they poop on those stairs. And then obviously when they're
- 2:29in the rafters overnight, they are not like humans where they
- 2:32don't poop when they're sleeping, they still poop.
- 2:34So here we go. There's poop inside and I use
- 2:38straw and then I flip the straw and now some people say use
- 2:42sand. They all have all these
- 2:44different recommendations for what you should use, but I
- 2:47choose to use straw because it breaks down really well for my
- 2:50gardens. And when there's poop in it, I
- 2:52pull it out every two weeks. Very, very like I'm very
- 2:56diligent with it because I want to see what's happening.
- 2:59And I've realized my observation is I always want to know what's
- 3:02happening. Like if somebody had a, an egg
- 3:06that was a soft shell, it didn't have a shell, they would drop it
- 3:09into the straw. And if you just didn't, if you
- 3:11didn't have it and you weren't changing it quickly, you
- 3:14wouldn't know. But overtime dealing with this
- 3:16poop has really taught me so much about how to deal with
- 3:21something quickly rather than let it sit there.
- 3:24So I, I recognize that like, oh, I should take care of it right
- 3:28away. I need to do this right away.
- 3:29I need to be on it. And then I was like, I need to
- 3:32cross pollinate this into my life.
- 3:34Things, other things that I don't like dealing with like
- 3:37paperwork doing and closing out each month, getting financial
- 3:42statements done. All of these things, I want to
- 3:45deal with them sooner because I've embedded into my head this
- 3:49need to deal with the poop quickly.
- 3:52And I, I said to myself, I'm going to cross pollinate this
- 3:54over to other areas in my life like laundry.
- 3:57I do the laundry right away. I don't wait till I've got
- 4:00massive amounts of laundry and my son is walking in and saying,
- 4:03mom, I don't have any underwear. No, I kill the monsters while
- 4:07they're small. But that is a big part of that
- 4:10has become because of the chicken poop.
- 4:13It, I've always been like the laundry person because I don't
- 4:16like not having what I want, but it really showed up in all the
- 4:21paperwork once I recognize that I deal with this chicken poop
- 4:25because I've had them now full time for about four years.
- 4:28And for me over those four years, I, I, I always dreaded
- 4:34the paperwork. But in the last 18 months I'm
- 4:36like, OK, I'm doing it sooner, OK, I'm doing it now, OK, I'm
- 4:39cleaning it up. And then it's like I got to
- 4:41clean this poop up. And in my head, every time I say
- 4:44those words, it's related to the chicken coop.
- 4:47So coops equal poop. Like it's just the way it is.
- 4:51And so if you can take that mentality and bring it over to
- 4:54somewhere else in your life, it is massively helpful.
- 4:58So I'm going to put this out there to you guys.
- 5:01Learn from the coop poop, take it out, handle it quicker, say
- 5:06I'm going to deal with this while there's small amounts of
- 5:09it rather than a problem. And there is nothing worse than
- 5:12waiting until there's so much poop that you just can't stand
- 5:16the smell, you can't stand the look of it.
- 5:17It makes you feel gross. And I only let that happen once
- 5:22and that was when I had COVID. And I will tell you what it it
- 5:25was horrible. And I will never do that again
- 5:29ever ever ever. Because it is way too much.
- 5:32And by handling it quicker, I don't have to feel that way.
- 5:36So learn from coop poop my friends, learn from coop poop.
- 5:40And I will see you all tomorrow and I hope you all have a very
- 5:43very blessed day. Bye.
