- 0:58Speaker 5: Juicy Scoop.
- 1:00Speaker 2: Hello and welcome to Juicy Scoop. I have such a
- 1:03Speaker 2: great interview for you guys today with the hilarious John Crist.
- 1:07Speaker 2: He is so funny and we also get into some
- 1:11Speaker 2: heartfelt moments, so I know you guys are going to
- 1:13Speaker 2: love it. And first let me tell you, yeah, I
- 1:15Speaker 2: went to Stagecoach. I had such a blast. I went
- 1:17Speaker 2: with my girlfriend, Stacey. We met the first day of USC,
- 1:20Speaker 2: so we had just such a fun girls weekend. And
- 1:24Speaker 2: we went Friday and we went at the golden hour.
- 1:28Speaker 2: I had worn my boot barn outfit to a party before,
- 1:34Speaker 2: took the photos that I needed, and then I switched
- 1:37Speaker 2: out my shoes to tennis shoes. And it is a
- 1:41Speaker 2: life changer for everyone. And I don't know how these
- 1:44Speaker 2: girls did it, like multiple days. I knew from the
- 1:47Speaker 2: previous years. So in one of the photos, I showed
- 1:51Speaker 2: my tennis shoes because I told you guys I was
- 1:52Speaker 2: going to go tennis shoes. But then we stumbled into
- 1:56Speaker 2: a karaoke bar that I did not realize S-Y-R-N is,
- 2:01Speaker 2: I guess it's pronounced siren, but it is the name
- 2:04Speaker 2: of Sydney Sweeney's lingerie brand. And it was her pop-up,
- 2:08Speaker 2: her thing. So I go, oh my God, it would
- 2:11Speaker 2: be kind of great to do karaoke and get this
- 2:15Speaker 2: on video. And I said, I'm sure the line is long.
- 2:17Speaker 2: It wasn't. This is Friday. There was only like two
- 2:19Speaker 2: people out of me. So yes, I did my classic
- 2:22Speaker 2: Bonnie Raitt, which for those of Juicy Scoopers that have
- 2:25Speaker 2: been around forever, I even talk about it in my book,
- 2:28Speaker 2: You'll Never Blue Ball in This Town Again, about what
- 2:30Speaker 2: is the best karaoke song to sing. So I sang
- 2:33Speaker 2: it and it was pretty fun. And then, you know,
- 2:38Speaker 2: all comedians really want to be singers. I mean, Theo
- 2:42Speaker 2: Vaughn got brought up on stage and then I was like,
- 2:45Speaker 2: I'm not going to be brought up on the actual
- 2:47Speaker 2: stagecoach stage. I'm going to go and do my karaoke.
- 2:50Speaker 2: But what happened is right before I about to go on,
- 2:52Speaker 2: I told my friend, this is what sorority sisters do.
- 2:55Speaker 2: I said, we're going to have to switch out the shoes.
- 2:58Speaker 2: Give me your boots. So when I go up on
- 3:00Speaker 2: stage and you film it, I have a full Western
- 3:02Speaker 2: outfit on. And that's, she took my ugly tennis shoes
- 3:06Speaker 2: and I took her boots and it was all good.
- 3:08Speaker 2: And then we switched them up and she said, you know,
- 3:10Speaker 2: even for that three minutes of me filming you, I
- 3:13Speaker 2: was like, wow, Heather's sneakers are really a dream. So
- 3:18Speaker 2: the next day, We went to a fun party, like
- 3:23Speaker 2: at the Tommy Bahamas Hotel right there in Palm Desert
- 3:27Speaker 2: and had like barbecue, got this cute charm necklace. Look
- 3:31Speaker 2: at the Stetson hats, did all the things. And then
- 3:34Speaker 2: we went to the rodeo, which was really fun. And
- 3:38Speaker 2: then I was like, okay, now we need to work
- 3:40Speaker 2: the outfits around the tennis shoes again, which we did
- 3:43Speaker 2: with jackets. And the wind was starting and It was
- 3:48Speaker 2: the first time I ever was smart about something. I
- 3:50Speaker 2: was like, Stacy, I'm telling you, I think the wind
- 3:54Speaker 2: is going to get way worse. And this just isn't fun.
- 3:56Speaker 2: Let's go. Let's get out before everybody else. We then
- 3:59Speaker 2: start the trek. She was wearing her tennis shoes too.
- 4:03Speaker 2: Start the trek. And it was like, I've never experienced
- 4:06Speaker 2: this kind of wind. I thought I was on the
- 4:08Speaker 2: moon if someone has ever gone there, which we still
- 4:11Speaker 2: don't know if they have. But anyway, I was on
- 4:13Speaker 2: the moon and I was trekking through and we were like, oh,
- 4:16Speaker 2: and I said, I don't even know, like, should we
- 4:17Speaker 2: call the Ubers? No, let's just, she said, remember there
- 4:20Speaker 2: were cabs. Let's get a cab overcharged. Who cares? Got home,
- 4:25Speaker 2: jumped in the shower. And then they said, we're evacuating
- 4:28Speaker 2: the place. And then I was like, oh my God,
- 4:30Speaker 2: my juicy scoopers are going to be so worried about
- 4:32Speaker 2: me that they're going to think that I didn't make
- 4:34Speaker 2: it out in time. And I almost did a video
- 4:36Speaker 2: just to say, you guys, I'm okay. Okay. And then
- 4:39Speaker 2: I saw what was happening in DC and I was like,
- 4:41Speaker 2: maybe I don't need to talk about how am I right?
- 4:43Speaker 2: You guys, I didn't get to see the whole concert,
- 4:45Speaker 2: but I am safe. So then I, then they said,
- 4:50Speaker 2: come on back. Well, I don't know if you were
- 4:53Speaker 2: probably half the people didn't come back. It was, but
- 4:55Speaker 2: you know, you had to be safe. And then Sunday
- 4:58Speaker 2: I just didn't go. I watched a post Malone from
- 5:01Speaker 2: my comfy couch. Anyway, it was really fun. I it's,
- 5:06Speaker 2: it's a, it's a lot of walking, but it is
- 5:08Speaker 2: a good time. So then over the weekend, also there
- 5:12Speaker 2: was a summer house audio leak. which sounded like somebody
- 5:16Speaker 2: just had their phone there. And we heard a little
- 5:18Speaker 2: bit of Sierra giving it to Amanda about her being
- 5:22Speaker 2: a cheating hoey friend with West. And everybody was like,
- 5:27Speaker 2: did West do it? Did he leak it so that
- 5:30Speaker 2: he could just get fired and have a big career
- 5:33Speaker 2: as a podcaster? Like, what is it? And then today
- 5:36Speaker 2: it came out that no, it was somebody from production.
- 5:39Speaker 2: No shit.
- 5:40Speaker 3: No shit.
- 5:41Speaker 2: Of course it's someone from production. I knew right away.
- 5:43Speaker 2: I'm like, it's coming from inside the house. And everyone's
- 5:46Speaker 2: acting all angry. Oh my God. If you're a Bravo
- 5:50Speaker 2: content creator and you repost this leaked audio that they
- 5:53Speaker 2: found on Reddit, oh, they'll never work with you again. No, no,
- 5:57Speaker 2: this is what they wanted. Okay. It wasn't even that juicy.
- 6:00Speaker 2: We're all going to, the people that are interested are
- 6:02Speaker 2: going to watch the reunion no matter what. And like,
- 6:07Speaker 2: I believe all those reality producers are all over Reddit
- 6:10Speaker 2: because I think anyone can write anything they want and
- 6:13Speaker 2: then they'll write something about one of the people in
- 6:15Speaker 2: the cast and then that person will be like, I
- 6:18Speaker 2: can't believe there's a rumor on the Reddit about so-and-so's
- 6:21Speaker 2: husband cheating. And then now they've got something to work
- 6:25Speaker 2: with on the show. That's my opinion. I think there's
- 6:28Speaker 2: a ton of reality producers that are anonymous people on
- 6:32Speaker 2: Reddit pages of their cast. Okay, that's my thing. All right,
- 6:37Speaker 2: you guys, I'm very excited for you guys to enjoy
- 6:40Speaker 2: this interview. Now, let's go with John Crist. Hello and
- 6:44Speaker 2: welcome to Juicy Scoop. I'm so excited to have a
- 6:47Speaker 2: new guest on Juicy Scoop, a hilarious comedian. I'm sure
- 6:51Speaker 2: you're familiar with him. And if you're not, you're going
- 6:53Speaker 2: to be in love because he is a hilarious delight.
- 6:56Speaker 2: He's a Southern boy. He's a God-fearing man. And he
- 7:01Speaker 2: can make fun of it all. John Crist, welcome to
- 7:04Speaker 2: Juicy Scoop.
- 7:05Speaker 4: I finally did it. I know I've been six years.
- 7:07Speaker 2: I've been DMing you nothing, nothing raunchy, just DMing you
- 7:12Speaker 2: being like, you're hilarious. Come on my show. I love
- 7:15Speaker 2: your videos, your standup, your take on life.
- 7:18Speaker 4: I couldn't get out here, but I come out here
- 7:20Speaker 4: a couple of times a year, but we can never
- 7:22Speaker 4: really make it work.
- 7:22Speaker 2: Yeah. And you have a bunch of shows this weekend
- 7:24Speaker 2: out here, which is amazing. I loved the video that
- 7:28Speaker 2: you did about how you got the nicknames of some
- 7:31Speaker 2: of our cities here in Southern California.
- 7:34Speaker 4: Is that correct?
- 7:36Speaker 2: I have not.
- 7:37Speaker 4: You haven't heard them.
- 7:38Speaker 2: I haven't heard those exactly. I grew up in the Valley.
- 7:41Speaker 2: And when I grew up in the Valley, people were
- 7:43Speaker 2: very snobby about the Valley. Now they're not anymore because
- 7:46Speaker 2: it's like everything's so expensive. But it used to be.
- 7:49Speaker 4: The Valley's better than it used to be?
- 7:50Speaker 5: Yes.
- 7:51Speaker 4: Oh, the Valley's nice now.
- 7:52Speaker 2: Yeah. Like it used to be like, ooh, like when
- 7:54Speaker 2: I went to USC, ooh, you live in the Valley.
- 7:56Speaker 2: It's 10 degrees hotter there. Like how can you handle life?
- 7:59Speaker 2: And I was like, well, I don't know. I'm like,
- 8:01Speaker 2: I'm doing pretty good. I had a nice pool and
- 8:03Speaker 2: two parents and like went to Catholic school. Like, I
- 8:05Speaker 2: feel like I'm killing the world, but is it as
- 8:08Speaker 2: nice as Newport?
- 8:09Speaker 4: Let me close my eyes and think if somebody said
- 8:11Speaker 4: they're from the Valley, if I would think they were,
- 8:13Speaker 4: I think they were rich.
- 8:15Speaker 2: Oh, okay.
- 8:16Speaker 4: I feel like now, but that's not, yeah. It wasn't
- 8:18Speaker 4: always like that. No, no.
- 8:19Speaker 2: It was like the second, because Hollywood and Beverly Hills started,
- 8:24Speaker 2: and in the Valley was where porn was.
- 8:27Speaker 3: Oh, right, right, right.
- 8:28Speaker 2: Before OnlyFans, and you actually had to go and be
- 8:30Speaker 2: filmed on a VHS tape and go and rent it
- 8:34Speaker 2: at a Blockbuster.
- 8:35Speaker 4: They had like an office.
- 8:36Speaker 2: You'd see porn stars at the coffee shop. You'd see,
- 8:39Speaker 2: they were kind of, like, it was sort of like, oh.
- 8:42Speaker 4: Would that be better or worse? They work at the office.
- 8:46Speaker 2: I don't know. A lot of them would get out
- 8:49Speaker 2: of porn to become realtors. And then when the market dropped,
- 8:53Speaker 2: they went back to being in porn and they said
- 8:54Speaker 2: porn was easier than holding an open house. Right. And sadly,
- 9:02Speaker 2: as a former realtor, as an emotional realtor, you get
- 9:05Speaker 2: fucked over harder as a realtor than when you're actually
- 9:08Speaker 2: getting paid to fuck.
- 9:09Speaker 4: Oh, yeah. No, the realtor we have, we're looking for
- 9:12Speaker 4: a house now. And it is, it, she knows what
- 9:16Speaker 4: she's doing. But it's probably the same as Jerry Seinfeld
- 9:19Speaker 4: said that with comedy. Yeah. If anybody on the street
- 9:23Speaker 4: wants to, they will introduce you with the same title
- 9:26Speaker 4: that we have.
- 9:27Speaker 2: Right, right, yes. Tonight.
- 9:29Speaker 4: Like if you're a doctor, you want to have doctor
- 9:31Speaker 4: in front of your name, it's going to take you
- 9:32Speaker 4: 12 years.
- 9:34Speaker 3: True.
- 9:35Speaker 4: If you want comedian, they will introduce you tonight as
- 9:38Speaker 4: our next comedian. I never thought about that. You get
- 9:42Speaker 4: the title day one.
- 9:43Speaker 2: That is so true.
- 9:45Speaker 4: But that's real estate.
- 9:46Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 9:47Speaker 4: Is that everybody can just take that. You're like, I'm
- 9:48Speaker 4: a real estate agent. And the people in Beverly Hills
- 9:51Speaker 4: sell a billion dollars for the real estate. And the
- 9:54Speaker 4: guy in the valley... The only.
- 9:56Speaker 2: Thing easier than becoming a comedian or a realtor is
- 9:59Speaker 2: a podcaster. So everything I'm doing, everything I've done has
- 10:04Speaker 2: been like literally.
- 10:05Speaker 4: Anyone could do. No barrier to entry.
- 10:11Speaker 5: No, no.
- 10:11Speaker 4: I did like what you said on last podcast about
- 10:15Speaker 4: nobody cares about the plight of a comedian. Oh, thank you.
- 10:18Speaker 4: I'm glad you agree with that. I feel like we
- 10:20Speaker 4: should all just accept that.
- 10:22Speaker 2: Yeah, unfortunately, yeah.
- 10:23Speaker 4: Nobody cares.
- 10:24Speaker 2: Because to them, it's still an easier job than roofing,
- 10:28Speaker 2: you know, so shut up.
- 10:29Speaker 4: And it is. It is.
- 10:31Speaker 2: So it is. I wouldn't know how to do something.
- 10:33Speaker 4: Yeah, every comedian movie is just so sad. The comedian
- 10:36Speaker 4: is struggling. Yes. His parents are estranged. His wife, that's
- 10:41Speaker 4: why I didn't like that movie. I didn't even see it,
- 10:43Speaker 4: but the plot, it was like, Why does the comedian
- 10:46Speaker 4: always have to be like a bummer of a guy?
- 10:48Speaker 2: Yes.
- 10:49Speaker 4: He's always so downtrodden and like everything else has gone terrible.
- 10:54Speaker 2: Right.
- 10:55Speaker 4: And he's like, I guess comedy.
- 10:56Speaker 2: And people would say like, oh, my God, you're a comedian.
- 10:59Speaker 2: You're like so happy and normal. I'm like, yeah, I
- 11:02Speaker 2: actually had parents that said you should become a comedian.
- 11:05Speaker 2: You're really funny. And they all they all saw me.
- 11:08Speaker 4: You and Chris D'Elia.
- 11:09Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 11:10Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 11:11Speaker 4: Was that the– I think that– Did.
- 11:13Speaker 2: He say– well, he came in– his dad was in
- 11:15Speaker 2: the business. Yes.
- 11:16Speaker 4: That's why I know his parents were in the business.
- 11:17Speaker 2: And also when you live here, it's not– like I
- 11:22Speaker 2: grew up here. So it wasn't like this taboo thing
- 11:25Speaker 2: to pursue the arts. It wasn't as horrible and depressing.
- 11:30Speaker 2: There were– as kids though, you knew. Like there were
- 11:33Speaker 2: six-year-old kids that were like a lot of pallets don't
- 11:34Speaker 2: get picked up. Good luck, sugar.
- 11:36Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 11:36Speaker 4: You know, you're going to– You go out on the
- 11:42Speaker 4: street in Nashville and you say you're a comedian? Then
- 11:45Speaker 4: you're special. You're a god.
- 11:47Speaker 2: Because everybody else is a singer?
- 11:48Speaker 4: Because nobody's a comedian. Here, everybody's doing a job like this.
- 11:52Speaker 2: Yes.
- 11:52Speaker 4: Because it's like, oh, I'm in the arts. You're like, oh, okay.
- 11:55Speaker 2: Right.
- 11:56Speaker 4: I work in, you're like, oh. But go into any
- 11:59Speaker 4: other city in America and say you're a comedian. They're like,
- 12:01Speaker 4: that's unbelievable.
- 12:02Speaker 2: Yeah, that's true. Yeah. And then also as a woman,
- 12:06Speaker 2: it was always just like guys were really like, overly
- 12:10Speaker 2: shocked by it you know like that i was one
- 12:13Speaker 2: i couldn't but i always kind of i always liked that.
- 12:15Speaker 4: Like you know what i i i came up you
- 12:18Speaker 4: know where i came up well you.
- 12:19Speaker 2: Probably don't know i know your whole story no you know.
- 12:21Speaker 4: Where i came up in comedy you.
- 12:23Speaker 2: Started doing chill like open night oh i.
- 12:27Speaker 4: Would sign up i came up at comedy works in
- 12:29Speaker 4: denver oh that's the best try to get on your
- 12:32Speaker 4: shows and i never could Because you know how they
- 12:35Speaker 4: have all the comics there.
- 12:36Speaker 2: I wouldn't– yeah.
- 12:37Speaker 4: I wasn't good back then. I wasn't good.
- 12:39Speaker 2: You weren't good enough back then?
- 12:40Speaker 5: No.
- 12:41Speaker 4: But you were coming– you would come through and your
- 12:44Speaker 4: shows would always be sold out. And I was like,
- 12:45Speaker 4: I want to get on the head of McDonald's. We'd
- 12:47Speaker 4: have to sign up like every Tuesday. We'd have to
- 12:50Speaker 4: run down there and put our names on.
- 12:51Speaker 2: For the– Oh, my God. This is like the best
- 12:52Speaker 2: story ever.
- 12:53Speaker 4: For the comedians that were coming through the weekend.
- 12:55Speaker 2: Oh, that makes me feel so special that I was
- 12:57Speaker 2: like a hoot.
- 12:57Speaker 4: I remember that one headshot. You had that one headshot
- 12:59Speaker 4: for a long time.
- 13:01Speaker 2: Not the red? In the white?
- 13:02Speaker 4: Let me think. It was– You didn't get new headshots
- 13:06Speaker 4: back like 10 years ago?
- 13:07Speaker 2: I still don't because I just don't care. I'm just like,
- 13:11Speaker 2: when this came up on 10 years, I was like,
- 13:14Speaker 2: I don't want to rebrand because my parents had their
- 13:16Speaker 2: same real estate. They were residential real estate together and
- 13:19Speaker 2: they had their same photos for so long. And then my,
- 13:22Speaker 2: my mom would be like, Oh, it's like, you know,
- 13:24Speaker 2: Coca-Cola or the Smith brothers or whatever. And I was like, well,
- 13:26Speaker 2: as long as I still look like my photo that's
- 13:29Speaker 2: on the podcast, I'm like, I'm good. I'll do another
- 13:32Speaker 2: one in a little bit.
- 13:33Speaker 4: Somebody like on a, their headshot. And then they walk
- 13:36Speaker 4: out and you go, Oh.
- 13:38Speaker 2: I went last show I did in Vegas and.
- 13:41Speaker 4: You look like your head shot.
- 13:42Speaker 2: Was at the MGM Grand. And part of my fun
- 13:45Speaker 2: was we stayed another day and we saw David Copperfield.
- 13:48Speaker 2: And we were in the second row. And we all gasped.
- 13:52Speaker 2: We were like grabbing each other's hands. We're like, is
- 13:55Speaker 2: this an impersonator?
- 13:58Speaker 6: Really?
- 13:58Speaker 2: And why is there a Coke can in his pants?
- 14:01Speaker 2: The dick was enormous. And it was right there.
- 14:05Speaker 4: Because you were in the front row. You're like, I
- 14:07Speaker 4: don't need to be. I thought that about Criss Angel, too.
- 14:12Speaker 2: A magician is like, you can make anything disappear except
- 14:16Speaker 2: your old face. Like Jesus.
- 14:18Speaker 4: Somebody has to tell you, I think. We should do
- 14:21Speaker 4: just a tour. We see everybody. We're in charge. Hey,
- 14:25Speaker 4: you need new headshots.
- 14:27Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 14:28Speaker 4: Yeah, because Brian Regan looks totally different. Have you seen
- 14:30Speaker 4: him lately?
- 14:31Speaker 2: No.
- 14:31Speaker 4: He's like all different. Yeah, that's important.
- 14:34Speaker 2: Maybe I do need to get, who wants to take?
- 14:37Speaker 2: I also like to get everything for free. Who would
- 14:38Speaker 2: like to take my headshot for free?
- 14:40Speaker 4: Don't you think the... Okay, so I got a buddy
- 14:44Speaker 4: on Ozempic. Oh, I love Ozempic.
- 14:47Speaker 2: I'm not on it right now, but I've dabbled. I've
- 14:50Speaker 2: taken a shot here or there.
- 14:52Speaker 4: But we should... I'm used to him being 250 pounds.
- 14:59Speaker 4: Him 150 is a different person.
- 15:00Speaker 2: Is he less funny? Is he a funny person?
- 15:02Speaker 4: I have to adjust who I'm looking at. We knew
- 15:05Speaker 4: him big.
- 15:06Speaker 2: And it happens so fast.
- 15:08Speaker 4: Does that make sense?
- 15:08Speaker 2: Yes, it happens so fast that it's like shocking. And
- 15:12Speaker 2: for a funny comedian who was heavy, that was their
- 15:16Speaker 2: entire act. I always remember when I was starting to
- 15:19Speaker 2: do stand-up and I wasn't famous or anything, there was
- 15:21Speaker 2: a big, heavy comedian. And he'd come on stage because
- 15:24Speaker 2: I always felt like I never had that good opening joke.
- 15:27Speaker 2: You know how someone would go, I look like so-and-so
- 15:29Speaker 2: and so-and-so had a baby. And you'd be like, oh, yeah,
- 15:30Speaker 2: they did. And it could work forever, right?
- 15:32Speaker 4: And then you're good for it. Yeah, yeah.
- 15:33Speaker 2: But he'd come out and he was heavy and he'd
- 15:35Speaker 2: go and he would take the mic stand and he'd go,
- 15:39Speaker 2: let me move this so you can see me better.
- 15:41Speaker 2: And the whole place laughed. And I was like, that's
- 15:43Speaker 2: such a good one.
- 15:44Speaker 4: I wish I was fat.
- 15:45Speaker 2: But now if he got skinny, he wouldn't be able
- 15:48Speaker 2: to say that joke anymore.
- 15:50Speaker 4: Nate Bargatze is a Nashville comic.
- 15:52Speaker 5: Yeah, I know him.
- 15:52Speaker 4: He's everywhere.
- 15:53Speaker 2: He's hilarious.
- 15:54Speaker 4: He's so good, yeah. He tells a story about he
- 15:56Speaker 4: was coming up in New York City, and the comic
- 16:01Speaker 4: had a ponytail.
- 16:02Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 16:03Speaker 4: His whole act was about his ponytail, about how girls
- 16:06Speaker 4: would and how he would interact, and he couldn't get it.
- 16:08Speaker 4: He has a ponytail. And then one day he cuts it.
- 16:12Speaker 4: He goes, I don't need this. This is not part
- 16:14Speaker 4: of my act. I don't need this ponytail. And so
- 16:17Speaker 4: he goes out. Nate tells a story better than me.
- 16:19Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah.
- 16:19Speaker 4: 30 seconds, 45 seconds bombing. And he goes, so I
- 16:25Speaker 4: used to have a ponytail. And then he went back
- 16:28Speaker 4: into his old act.
- 16:32Speaker 2: That is so good.
- 16:34Speaker 4: There should be a, you should, if people doing jokes
- 16:39Speaker 4: about being overweight and sometimes they're not overweight enough to
- 16:43Speaker 4: be doing fat.
- 16:44Speaker 2: Right.
- 16:45Speaker 4: You know?
- 16:46Speaker 2: Yeah. You have to keep it authentic to your life and,
- 16:48Speaker 2: Some bits, you know, can go for a while, and
- 16:50Speaker 2: then other times you have to be like, maybe don't
- 16:52Speaker 2: tell the birth story when your kid is 28. You
- 16:55Speaker 2: know what I mean? Like, maybe tell a different perspective.
- 16:59Speaker 4: Do you think a comic would not go on Ozempic
- 17:03Speaker 4: to keep his act?
- 17:05Speaker 2: I think some people struggle with it.
- 17:07Speaker 4: Really?
- 17:07Speaker 2: Because there was a guy on SNL, not SNL, Mad
- 17:10Speaker 2: TV that was really funny, pre-Ozempic days, like 15 years.
- 17:14Speaker 2: And he did lose weight. And I... I mean, he's
- 17:17Speaker 2: probably still doing fine, so I don't want to be rude,
- 17:19Speaker 2: but I don't think he, you know, I think it
- 17:23Speaker 2: did affect his, like, getting jobs and stuff. Yeah. Because
- 17:26Speaker 2: it made you special. Now you just look like everybody.
- 17:28Speaker 2: And we don't know what to do with you now. Yeah,
- 17:30Speaker 2: now you look like everybody else. It's good for your health, but,
- 17:33Speaker 2: and I'm sure it's, like, fun, you know, to zip
- 17:35Speaker 2: up your pants, but at the same time.
- 17:37Speaker 4: But if you're, it's, you know, it's as fun as
- 17:40Speaker 4: standing ovation.
- 17:41Speaker 2: Exactly.
- 17:41Speaker 4: That's really fun, too.
- 17:42Speaker 2: And having all those. fun jokes about, you know, not
- 17:47Speaker 2: being able to fit in the teacup. You know what
- 17:48Speaker 2: I mean? That's a whole.
- 17:50Speaker 4: Oh, yeah.
- 17:50Speaker 1: Oh, my God.
- 17:50Speaker 2: A heavy person can go to Disneyland. Orlando's even better
- 17:54Speaker 2: because it's humid. And do a solid 45. Easy. That
- 17:57Speaker 2: is relatable. Everybody gets... Now, if I do go to Orlando,
- 18:03Speaker 2: what am I going to say? It's not.
- 18:05Speaker 4: Not interested.
- 18:06Speaker 2: Not as good. Yeah. Not as good.
- 18:09Speaker 4: Don't you think all the other comics, like... This podcast
- 18:13Speaker 4: has become a behemoth. Look at all the other, I
- 18:19Speaker 4: don't know how to ask this question appropriately. I feel
- 18:21Speaker 4: like a lot of your peers are getting crushed out there.
- 18:27Speaker 4: With female comics from that like 10 years, like the
- 18:31Speaker 4: era when we were like, none of them are doing anything.
- 18:35Speaker 2: Oh, okay. Yeah, it is a little hard because I
- 18:37Speaker 2: think sometimes– Does that make sense?
- 18:38Speaker 4: Does that question make sense?
- 18:39Speaker 2: Yeah, because I think sometimes people didn't like jump on
- 18:42Speaker 2: the social media train. Maybe, yeah. And because I did
- 18:46Speaker 2: and I joined– I got started the podcast over 10
- 18:49Speaker 2: years ago. Gosh, dude. I was like on Twitter and
- 18:53Speaker 2: Instagram when I was doing Chelsea Lately. So it's like
- 18:55Speaker 2: I was doing all that kind of as a little
- 18:58Speaker 2: bit of an older person. But I was like in it,
- 19:00Speaker 2: doing it. Yeah. I saw this one thing, though. They said,
- 19:04Speaker 2: if you could suddenly become 21 again today, like on TikTok,
- 19:07Speaker 2: what would you do? And I wrote, I would start
- 19:10Speaker 2: my career even earlier. I'm like, when people say, what
- 19:15Speaker 2: would you do if you... I'm like, when I was
- 19:17Speaker 2: with the Wayans brothers working on some movie, some of
- 19:20Speaker 2: the nephews were like, you haven't heard of YouTube? I
- 19:23Speaker 2: wish I would have gone home that day and created
- 19:26Speaker 2: a YouTube channel. I wish I would have been doing
- 19:28Speaker 2: the podcast and the YouTube while I was doing Chelsea lately.
- 19:31Speaker 2: I don't know that they would have let me. Probably not.
- 19:33Speaker 4: They wouldn't know what it was.
- 19:35Speaker 2: Well, they would get mad if we would do like
- 19:37Speaker 2: a funny Twitter joke at our home like the night before.
- 19:39Speaker 4: Oh, they want to save it. Because they'd be.
- 19:41Speaker 2: Like, and I kind of got it. They're like, this
- 19:44Speaker 2: was a topic and now you've like put it out there.
- 19:46Speaker 2: So you've got to kind of like keep.
- 19:48Speaker 4: What an era. The Chelsea era was great, man.
- 19:50Speaker 2: Yeah, you've got to keep that a little bit because
- 19:52Speaker 2: you're working on the show, which is great because now
- 19:54Speaker 2: everybody just does their own thing.
- 19:55Speaker 4: Who came out of there? You and Josh?
- 19:58Speaker 2: Josh– I mean as far as writers, Josh and I
- 20:00Speaker 2: and Chris, we were all writers on the show and
- 20:04Speaker 2: then– but– and Fortune and then– but also like people
- 20:09Speaker 2: that were just regulars on it all the time were
- 20:11Speaker 2: Joe Coy, Natasha Leggero. They were not writers but they
- 20:15Speaker 2: were regulars.
- 20:15Speaker 4: So that was– But that's wild how that made so
- 20:18Speaker 4: many careers.
- 20:19Speaker 2: It did because the way we structured the show, like
- 20:22Speaker 2: I was there from day one, the way we gave
- 20:25Speaker 2: the audience much more of a personal insight into the
- 20:29Speaker 2: regulars because it wasn't just doing jokes and it wasn't
- 20:32Speaker 2: even like an at midnight where you're just like doing
- 20:35Speaker 2: like in when we would come up with how to
- 20:38Speaker 2: talk about it and then we'd say to the other
- 20:41Speaker 2: writers like you know like i would start to say
- 20:43Speaker 2: well with my kid if with britney spears i'm like
- 20:46Speaker 2: i have two boys and da da da da and
- 20:47Speaker 2: then people would know oh heather's the mom Joe Coy
- 20:50Speaker 2: has one son. Oh yeah. And like all of a sudden.
- 20:52Speaker 4: Everybody had their personalities.
- 20:54Speaker 2: And then we promoted the day too, like your dates.
- 20:57Speaker 2: But then also, yeah, people got to know you better.
- 21:00Speaker 2: So then when you come on stage, they knew that
- 21:03Speaker 2: you were the Southern son of a Baptist.
- 21:06Speaker 4: You kind of had that angle. Yeah.
- 21:08Speaker 2: Like you kind of got your right. So then you could,
- 21:09Speaker 2: you weren't just telling, you know, pop culture jokes. So
- 21:12Speaker 2: I always thought that was really important to do. I
- 21:14Speaker 2: always told the people, like, if you can work in,
- 21:17Speaker 2: background about your life while you're telling the jokes on
- 21:20Speaker 2: pop culture, that's going to give you a further way.
- 21:23Speaker 4: Now you know what's taking the place of what's his name?
- 21:29Speaker 4: The show's getting canceled, the CBS, Colbert.
- 21:31Speaker 2: Colbert, know what's taking place of it.
- 21:33Speaker 4: You know the answer to this.
- 21:34Speaker 1: I don't.
- 21:35Speaker 4: Comics Unleashed.
- 21:38Speaker 2: Oh, oh, yes.
- 21:39Speaker 4: It's taking that time slot.
- 21:41Speaker 2: Oh, cool.
- 21:42Speaker 4: Have you been on that?
- 21:43Speaker 2: I have, and they asked me to.
- 21:45Speaker 4: That guy's like the richest guy in Hollywood.
- 21:47Speaker 2: They asked me to do it, and the timing just
- 21:50Speaker 2: didn't work out.
- 21:51Speaker 4: Yeah, exactly.
- 21:52Speaker 2: But maybe I'll do it now. I don't know. But
- 21:56Speaker 2: I did it back in the day, and it was good.
- 21:59Speaker 2: Those were good clips to have when you didn't have clips,
- 22:02Speaker 2: when you were putting together a tape tape.
- 22:04Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 22:06Speaker 2: They think you're done for the day, but they don't
- 22:08Speaker 2: know about the drawer. The drawer. Just the one square
- 22:14Speaker 2: before bed. Or two, you know. Nobody's watching. You deserve
- 22:21Speaker 2: a treat.
- 22:25Speaker 1: With eight flavours to choose from, you can choose the
- 22:27Speaker 1: flavour you favour with Cadbury Dairy Milk.
- 22:36Speaker 5: I'm Darman, and this is What Happens Next. Each week
- 22:39Speaker 5: on the show, I sit down with extraordinary people who
- 22:42Speaker 5: have faced tremendous setbacks, and yet somehow have found a
- 22:47Speaker 5: way to turn them into their greatest strengths.
- 22:49Speaker 2: Life is one long lesson of chaos.
- 22:52Speaker 1: I'm heading to the Emmys, and I have police complaints
- 22:55Speaker 1: filed against me.
- 22:56Speaker 2: When your free will was about to be taken from you,
- 22:58Speaker 2: what would you do if it was given back?
- 23:00Speaker 5: Where did that need come from, where you thought that
- 23:03Speaker 5: you had.
- 23:04Speaker 4: To succeed in order to feel loved? He said, I
- 23:06Speaker 4: have a work dad. I need a home dad. What
- 23:08Speaker 4: happens next? When I came in, he started crying.
- 23:11Speaker 5: Everybody in life encounters hardships. What defines them is not
- 23:15Speaker 5: those hard moments that they go through.
- 23:17Speaker 4: It's about what happens next.
- 23:19Speaker 2: I decided to risk it all.
- 23:20Speaker 4: I realized how valuable every day was. You're worth the work.
- 23:23Speaker 2: Listen, Dar, I'm not going to pull punches. You can
- 23:26Speaker 2: use your voice even if it's shaped.
- 23:28Speaker 5: The stories are different, but the impact is the same.
- 23:31Speaker 5: Only one question matters. What happens next?
- 23:41Speaker 2: But let's talk about you a little bit. I love
- 23:44Speaker 2: your background. So you're one of eight. You're number three.
- 23:48Speaker 4: One of eight, yep.
- 23:49Speaker 2: And your dad actually was a pastor. Is he still
- 23:52Speaker 2: a pastor?
- 23:53Speaker 4: Well, you probably didn't get this deep into the research.
- 23:55Speaker 4: I'm sorry, did he die?
- 23:56Speaker 5: No.
- 23:56Speaker 2: Oh, sorry.
- 23:56Speaker 4: Okay, sorry. Wow. He is now the mayor of our city. Oh. Lilburn, Georgia,
- 24:05Speaker 4: where we grew up.
- 24:06Speaker 2: Happening. Good for him.
- 24:08Speaker 6: Yeah, dude.
- 24:09Speaker 4: He switched over. You know- you try to control people
- 24:12Speaker 4: by fixing their hearts.
- 24:15Speaker 2: Okay.
- 24:15Speaker 4: Now it's with the rules.
- 24:17Speaker 2: Okay.
- 24:18Speaker 4: He actually said this to me. He goes, and you're
- 24:19Speaker 4: a comedian. He was a pastor and he's the mayor.
- 24:22Speaker 4: He goes, we, we wake up and we look at
- 24:24Speaker 4: the world. We don't like it. We don't like the
- 24:27Speaker 4: way it's headed. We don't like, and we try to,
- 24:29Speaker 4: he said, at first I try to change it by
- 24:31Speaker 4: changing people's hearts in, in religion. Then I try to
- 24:34Speaker 4: change it by legislation. And he goes, as his son,
- 24:38Speaker 4: he goes, you're kind of doing the same thing. You're
- 24:39Speaker 4: just trying to change it with, ideas. Oh, that's beautiful.
- 24:43Speaker 4: You know, I love that. Is that too sincere for
- 24:45Speaker 4: this podcast?
- 24:46Speaker 2: No, I know. I love it. I love the sense
- 24:49Speaker 2: of family and, and you know, so your parents are
- 24:51Speaker 2: still together.
- 24:52Speaker 4: They're still together.
- 24:53Speaker 2: Yep. And, um, one of the things I loved is,
- 24:56Speaker 2: so I'm the youngest of five and from the Valley,
- 25:00Speaker 2: from the Valley. And so my, we're Catholic and my
- 25:04Speaker 2: parents are very like, they were like, they could have
- 25:07Speaker 2: been comedians. Honestly, they could have been comedians, but they
- 25:09Speaker 2: were in advertising and then real estate. And so they
- 25:12Speaker 2: would just tell me out and out that like my
- 25:15Speaker 2: sister and I were mistakes. My dad was like, say
- 25:17Speaker 2: your mom couldn't read a calendar. And then every time
- 25:20Speaker 2: I came home from a business trip and she had
- 25:22Speaker 2: made a steak and a martini, I was like, Oh fuck,
- 25:24Speaker 2: you're pregnant again. Like, and I was just like, and
- 25:28Speaker 2: then they're like, but you were such a great surprise.
- 25:29Speaker 2: And so then, I was like, oh, okay. And so
- 25:34Speaker 2: as the youngest of five, I was this bit, which
- 25:37Speaker 2: I'll let you tell because it was so funny. But
- 25:39Speaker 2: I remember I never got in trouble. And then one
- 25:42Speaker 2: day my dad was like, knock it off or something.
- 25:45Speaker 2: And my older brother started to do like an 80s
- 25:48Speaker 2: slow clap, like, Finally!
- 25:51Speaker 4: Finally!
- 25:53Speaker 2: Because they had a completely different dad. And even though
- 25:57Speaker 2: there was only 10 years between us, it was just like,
- 25:59Speaker 2: by the time I came, they would throw me in
- 26:02Speaker 2: the station wagon and we would go watch Rosemary's Baby, Jaws.
- 26:06Speaker 2: I was like four. They didn't care. Nobody cared. I'd
- 26:10Speaker 2: come to school and I'd be like, did you see
- 26:12Speaker 2: that made-for-TV movie about the mistress? And these kids would
- 26:15Speaker 2: be like, who's letting you watch this? And I'm just like,
- 26:18Speaker 2: I don't know. Like nobody's watching me.
- 26:20Speaker 4: Like no one cares. I think everybody in the comments
- 26:23Speaker 4: of this bit is like older siblings get disciplined less
- 26:25Speaker 4: than the younger.
- 26:26Speaker 3: The younger get disciplined less.
- 26:29Speaker 4: They have no discipline.
- 26:30Speaker 2: Right.
- 26:30Speaker 4: Because their parents are tired. That's what everybody said.
- 26:33Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 26:33Speaker 4: Everybody goes they're just like the first one. You know
- 26:36Speaker 4: how like.
- 26:37Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 26:38Speaker 4: Especially in L.A. is probably we're going to.
- 26:40Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 26:41Speaker 4: New mattresses, we got to make sure the sheets are
- 26:45Speaker 4: different because the toxins in the sheets, because you heard
- 26:47Speaker 4: about that, and the bottle feeding versus the, we're going
- 26:50Speaker 4: to do like, everybody in the South is big on
- 26:52Speaker 4: like cloth diapers now.
- 26:54Speaker 2: Oh God, what a nightmare, never.
- 26:56Speaker 4: That sounds like, they're like, hey, we're doing it. And
- 26:58Speaker 4: then every parent, you go, oh, you got that stroller? Well,
- 27:01Speaker 4: did you know that if you got a, you go,
- 27:03Speaker 4: I got to get a new stroller. But then by the,
- 27:06Speaker 4: especially by kid number eight or five, after, Three.
- 27:11Speaker 2: Now, did you have one of those families, not to
- 27:14Speaker 2: compare you to the Duggards, okay, but did you have
- 27:16Speaker 2: one of those families where you were assigned?
- 27:17Speaker 4: They're not doing good.
- 27:18Speaker 2: No, they're not.
- 27:21Speaker 4: Love them. I know a couple of them. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 27:24Speaker 2: They're not doing good. But were you like assigned to
- 27:28Speaker 2: like raise a little one?
- 27:29Speaker 5: Mm-hmm.
- 27:30Speaker 4: Which one was yours? Well, we would always have, so
- 27:33Speaker 4: Emma is my youngest, second to youngest sister. Was she
- 27:36Speaker 4: your assignment? That's the one I'm the closest with.
- 27:39Speaker 2: Okay.
- 27:39Speaker 4: That we were like, I remember my brother Elias, I
- 27:43Speaker 4: was in, I was probably 12 and somebody came over
- 27:46Speaker 4: and they were like, well, you shouldn't be babysitting. I'm like, well,
- 27:52Speaker 4: I am. So I don't know what he wanted me
- 27:54Speaker 4: to say. I'm in charge.
- 27:56Speaker 2: Because you're a boy or so young.
- 27:57Speaker 4: I think the older ones were gone.
- 27:59Speaker 2: Okay.
- 27:59Speaker 4: And they were like, well, John's there.
- 28:01Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 28:01Speaker 4: But I knew, I don't know. I knew about the
- 28:03Speaker 4: house and how they're like, like there was just no,
- 28:06Speaker 4: it's not like it is now.
- 28:08Speaker 2: I was babysitting at 12. I had people under me.
- 28:10Speaker 2: I was like the pimp of the neighborhood. I was like,
- 28:13Speaker 2: I can't work tonight, but I've got a girl.
- 28:15Speaker 4: We got somebody to come over.
- 28:16Speaker 2: I got a girl. Yeah, yeah. Like, I was so— I
- 28:19Speaker 2: was 12.
- 28:20Speaker 4: Yeah, and nobody— now, like, if you have a babysitter now,
- 28:23Speaker 4: the background checks.
- 28:25Speaker 2: Oh, my God. Yeah, all of it.
- 28:27Speaker 4: This is a different time.
- 28:28Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 28:29Speaker 4: In a better time, I'd say.
- 28:31Speaker 2: And so in this bit, this stand-up bit, you say
- 28:34Speaker 2: you go home. It's now your younger sister. Mm-hmm. And
- 28:38Speaker 2: I loved it. So you just, can you just tell
- 28:41Speaker 2: the story?
- 28:41Speaker 4: Yeah, she gets, I mean, I remember, I remember she
- 28:44Speaker 4: gets like, we couldn't, first of all, I come home
- 28:47Speaker 4: because I, Lilburn, Georgia, I had a show in Atlanta.
- 28:50Speaker 4: So I had to stay at my parents' house. I
- 28:52Speaker 4: come home. My sister is in the basement watching a
- 28:56Speaker 4: movie with her boyfriend with the door locked. I'm just like,
- 29:01Speaker 4: what is going on here? And she's like, my parents
- 29:04Speaker 4: are like, John, leave her alone. I can leave her alone.
- 29:07Speaker 4: We had to watch TV in the kitchen on separate–
- 29:12Speaker 4: if I had a girl over separate couches.
- 29:14Speaker 2: Oh, my God.
- 29:15Speaker 4: And blankets, no shot. Dude, my parents would turn up
- 29:17Speaker 4: the air conditioning so we couldn't– and we were freezing,
- 29:20Speaker 4: but there were no blankets because they don't want– you know,
- 29:23Speaker 4: a teenager is going to be under the blanket, no shot.
- 29:26Speaker 4: And Christian movies, no cussing. There's actually a technology that's–
- 29:30Speaker 4: they've been sued. But it would go through movies and
- 29:35Speaker 4: take out all the sex scenes.
- 29:38Speaker 2: We had– I had a friend.
- 29:39Speaker 4: Something similar.
- 29:40Speaker 2: That I'd be like, let's go to the movie. Because like, again,
- 29:42Speaker 2: my parents are working. I would be like, let's take
- 29:44Speaker 2: the RTD, which was the bus, down to the movie theaters.
- 29:49Speaker 2: Like nine. I'm not kidding.
- 29:51Speaker 4: I believe you. I believe you.
- 29:52Speaker 6: At nine.
- 29:52Speaker 2: And then I'd be like, let's go see like Grease
- 29:55Speaker 2: or whatever. And it was like, no, that's too– dirty or,
- 29:59Speaker 2: you know, like, or, you know, the, the tidings or
- 30:02Speaker 2: the Catholic, whatever. There was like a Catholic review of
- 30:05Speaker 2: movies of what could be okay and what not could
- 30:07Speaker 2: be okay. And we did not, my family didn't follow
- 30:09Speaker 2: that at all.
- 30:10Speaker 4: Oh, they didn't?
- 30:11Speaker 2: No. And we didn't do confession after, after the, like
- 30:15Speaker 2: the first confession or we do it through school. And
- 30:18Speaker 2: then I'd be like, mom, why aren't you going to confession?
- 30:21Speaker 2: And she'd be like, well, I just think when you're perfect,
- 30:23Speaker 2: why waste the priest's time? There's just, they've got so
- 30:25Speaker 2: many people to see. And I was just like, yeah,
- 30:28Speaker 2: I don't know. Like we'd go to mass every Sunday.
- 30:30Speaker 2: We'd go to mass every Sunday. We'd say grace. We
- 30:33Speaker 2: would talk the Catholic talk. But like there were like,
- 30:36Speaker 2: then my dad would be like, what are we, cafeteria Catholics?
- 30:38Speaker 2: Which means you like handpick. Like maybe you go on
- 30:40Speaker 2: birth control, but you still go to mass.
- 30:43Speaker 6: You know.
- 30:44Speaker 4: I'm doing this part, but not that part. Cafeteria Catholic
- 30:46Speaker 4: is what that's called?
- 30:47Speaker 2: Yeah. We're picking just a few things.
- 30:49Speaker 4: We're not doing that. Yeah, yeah. But they can, y'all drink.
- 30:53Speaker 4: Catholics can drink. Yes, we always drink. See, we can't drink.
- 30:57Speaker 2: At all?
- 30:57Speaker 4: I mean, well, Pentecostal, like in the South, it's just not,
- 31:00Speaker 4: or like a Baptist, no. But Catholics are always.
- 31:03Speaker 2: Do you drink now?
- 31:04Speaker 4: Well, I'm sober now. I went to rehab in like 2019,
- 31:06Speaker 4: but I've been sober since.
- 31:08Speaker 2: When did you start drinking?
- 31:10Speaker 1: Dirty.
- 31:11Speaker 4: Once I got popular, I didn't know what to quite do.
- 31:13Speaker 2: Oh, yeah? It was confusing. So what was that like?
- 31:17Speaker 2: So you really popped when? Like about 10 years ago?
- 31:20Speaker 4: Yeah, I was no-name streamer. comedian struggling you wouldn't put
- 31:24Speaker 4: me on your shows and then I pop and then
- 31:27Speaker 4: Heather's like oh what's up come on my show I'm just.
- 31:29Speaker 2: Joking first of all I never picked it I would
- 31:31Speaker 2: always say can I have an opener and even back
- 31:34Speaker 2: then I wouldn't look at the people's stuff now I
- 31:38Speaker 2: do look now I say I need somebody can I
- 31:41Speaker 2: have like four people and now it's so easy they'll
- 31:44Speaker 2: send me their Instagram and then I'll be like okay
- 31:46Speaker 2: this is my first this is my second third and
- 31:48Speaker 2: fourth choice just because but in the past I didn't
- 31:51Speaker 2: do that and I would get some doozies And that
- 31:54Speaker 2: would like– I remember I had this one guy before
- 31:56Speaker 2: a show in Aspen. And his whole act is like
- 32:01Speaker 2: how he doesn't like screwing women over 40. I'm like,
- 32:05Speaker 2: who do you think is in my audience? And it
- 32:07Speaker 2: was just like– and he's like, I'm doing charity work.
- 32:10Speaker 2: And I was like– I'm waiting on the wings going,
- 32:13Speaker 2: I can't believe, Heather, you didn't check out this. So
- 32:17Speaker 2: after that, I checked out everybody that– I tried to
- 32:19Speaker 2: find a good match. I wouldn't even remember who it was.
- 32:21Speaker 2: He's not working anymore. He's never turned out to be faint.
- 32:23Speaker 4: No, obviously, because you wouldn't do something like that. Yeah.
- 32:26Speaker 2: And then as he's introducing me, which he's just met
- 32:30Speaker 2: me 10 minutes before he went on stage, he's like,
- 32:32Speaker 2: this is a really good friend of mine. We've been
- 32:35Speaker 2: friends for a long time. And I'm like, oh, my God.
- 32:37Speaker 4: Don't say that.
- 32:38Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 32:39Speaker 4: Just dig the hole on stage. Yeah.
- 32:42Speaker 2: Okay, so you said you– When was kind of a
- 32:45Speaker 2: moment where you felt like you kind of popped and
- 32:47Speaker 2: you're like, I can't believe this is everything I dreamed of? Yeah.
- 32:50Speaker 2: And like when was that? What was that moment?
- 32:53Speaker 4: 2016 probably. I remember I put out a video. It's
- 33:00Speaker 4: called Christian Girl Instagram where like Christian, like evangelical Christian,
- 33:04Speaker 4: they would like take a photo. This was back in
- 33:06Speaker 4: the early Instagram days.
- 33:07Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah.
- 33:08Speaker 4: About they had their Bible open. a verse highlighted, maybe
- 33:12Speaker 4: have a cup of coffee and a cup of fruit there.
- 33:15Speaker 4: And like, uh, and it was so ornately organized that
- 33:19Speaker 4: I go, you probably read the Bible for same thing
- 33:21Speaker 4: with cat. You probably read the Bible for two minutes.
- 33:23Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 33:23Speaker 4: It took you 30 to organize this photo. I remember
- 33:27Speaker 4: it was like before reels, before any Instagram photo, there
- 33:31Speaker 4: was not even carousels. It was just one photo.
- 33:33Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 33:34Speaker 4: And then the caption would be like mornings with the
- 33:36Speaker 4: Lord or something. And I thought that was so silly
- 33:39Speaker 4: that I made a video, uh, making fun of, like satirizing.
- 33:44Speaker 4: They were like, hey, if you're going to do this,
- 33:45Speaker 4: make sure you do this. Make sure you highlight these verses.
- 33:47Speaker 4: Make sure you put these books in the background. Make
- 33:49Speaker 4: it look– use these filters. Make it look good to
- 33:52Speaker 4: get more likes. And everybody kind of just– Blew up?
- 33:57Speaker 2: They like went viral?
- 33:58Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 33:59Speaker 2: And were you doing a lot of like Christian church-based– funny,
- 34:05Speaker 2: you know, relatable jokes in your act from the beginning
- 34:08Speaker 2: or did you kind of fall into that?
- 34:09Speaker 4: Oh, you always did. I was at the beginning. I
- 34:10Speaker 4: was like, yeah, but I would like, but do you know,
- 34:13Speaker 4: do you know any like comedians that do churches?
- 34:16Speaker 2: I mean, I've followed some and I do think it's
- 34:19Speaker 2: really great when you can tap into that world and
- 34:22Speaker 2: also be clean. I tell younger comedians, too, like, listen,
- 34:26Speaker 2: I am kind of dirty, but I didn't start out
- 34:29Speaker 2: that way. I like like, you know, start out clean
- 34:32Speaker 2: because you'll work so much more if you can work quicker.
- 34:36Speaker 4: I don't do any churches anymore.
- 34:38Speaker 2: I mean, not necessarily churches, but just being a little
- 34:40Speaker 2: bit of a cleaner act can also really be good.
- 34:42Speaker 4: Maybe you can make 500 bucks to go to your church.
- 34:45Speaker 4: country club and do the party for at the beginning,
- 34:48Speaker 4: at the beginning. Yeah. But I was kind of make,
- 34:50Speaker 4: I always stayed in the club cause I came up
- 34:52Speaker 4: in Denver. So I was always staying in the club
- 34:53Speaker 4: because I, I felt like the club comics were better.
- 34:57Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 34:57Speaker 4: Actually way better. They were sharper and they were like,
- 35:00Speaker 4: and I was like, well, I got to stay here.
- 35:01Speaker 4: If I go over that route, it's over for me.
- 35:04Speaker 2: Even though you're getting the offers and stuff. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
- 35:07Speaker 4: But I knew that was kind of like.
- 35:08Speaker 2: A, like you could get a pigeonholed.
- 35:11Speaker 4: Yeah, so I stayed in the club the whole time.
- 35:13Speaker 4: I stayed in the clubs the whole time, and now
- 35:14Speaker 4: I just do, I don't do any churches anymore.
- 35:17Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 35:17Speaker 4: I'm still on the team.
- 35:19Speaker 2: You mean you still believe?
- 35:20Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, I'm still on the team, but.
- 35:22Speaker 2: Do you go to church now?
- 35:23Speaker 4: I go to church, yeah.
- 35:24Speaker 2: What kind of church do you go to?
- 35:25Speaker 4: Not Catholic, I'll tell you that. We have some strong
- 35:28Speaker 4: opinions about y'all. I'm just joking. Yeah, yeah. Catholics are
- 35:31Speaker 4: hot these days. Catholicism is coming back.
- 35:34Speaker 2: I've been watching that. I've been watching it like the young,
- 35:37Speaker 2: especially younger people going. And I think it's all great.
- 35:41Speaker 2: I just think anything that gets young people out of
- 35:43Speaker 2: the house, whatever it is, providing it's not a dangerous
- 35:46Speaker 2: cult or terrorism. I'm like, good, go.
- 35:49Speaker 4: Meet some people. Well, the evangelical megachurch is, a lot
- 35:53Speaker 4: of people say, is a failed experiment.
- 35:56Speaker 2: Oh, really?
- 35:56Speaker 4: You know, but it's just too, it's too.
- 35:58Speaker 2: Do you think there was just one too many docs
- 36:00Speaker 2: exposing that? It's not.
- 36:02Speaker 4: I think documentaries, I.
- 36:04Speaker 2: Think Netflix docs in the last eight years has turned
- 36:07Speaker 2: people against a lot of religions. Like, honestly, it makes
- 36:10Speaker 2: you kind of go, God, could I be a preacher? Like,
- 36:13Speaker 2: could I start my own church? Like, who is this person?
- 36:15Speaker 2: And why, you know, and why should I be like
- 36:18Speaker 2: going to them and listening to them every Sunday? Like,
- 36:20Speaker 2: I don't know, you know?
- 36:22Speaker 4: Yeah, well, cults. is based, literally the only way it
- 36:26Speaker 4: survives is based on limited information. So in the 80s, 90s,
- 36:31Speaker 4: you could move out to Salt Lake, have a kind
- 36:34Speaker 4: of a commune. They had their own textbooks. They didn't
- 36:37Speaker 4: have cell phones. So they've stayed there. So you could
- 36:40Speaker 4: tell them whatever you wanted.
- 36:41Speaker 2: Right.
- 36:42Speaker 4: Now people go, no, we're not. The whole thing kind
- 36:46Speaker 4: of falls apart. The whole idea of a cult does
- 36:49Speaker 4: kind of fall apart. It's like kids in, like foreign countries,
- 36:52Speaker 4: now they see what we're all doing. Right. You can't
- 36:56Speaker 4: really control if people have information.
- 36:58Speaker 2: So true.
- 36:59Speaker 4: The whole idea of a cult, unless you're cutting off
- 37:02Speaker 4: the information.
- 37:03Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 37:04Speaker 4: It wouldn't, it wouldn't, it's not going to work.
- 37:06Speaker 2: And I also feel that like, um, I mean, okay. So,
- 37:09Speaker 2: so in, with the mega churches, okay. Like I was like, Wow.
- 37:15Speaker 2: Like you can drink a coffee. Like you could have
- 37:17Speaker 2: a star, like drink a coffee during mass. And like in,
- 37:22Speaker 2: in my Catholic church, there's always a wood.
- 37:24Speaker 5: Bench.
- 37:25Speaker 4: Yeah, drinking anything in there. There's no cup holder.
- 37:27Speaker 2: And wood, like uncomfortable chair. And so then I like,
- 37:30Speaker 2: you know, someone would have something or I'd go and
- 37:32Speaker 2: I'm like, oh my God, I'm in like a movie seat. No,
- 37:34Speaker 2: I'd go to like a Christian church. Someone would invite me.
- 37:37Speaker 4: Well, don't say that because Catholics are Christian.
- 37:39Speaker 2: Right. I always say Christian service. Like when I was
- 37:43Speaker 2: saying when I started Juicy Scoop, I was like, spread
- 37:45Speaker 2: the word of Juicy Scoop as you would Jesus Christ.
- 37:47Speaker 2: Do your Christian service hours. When you go to Catholic school,
- 37:50Speaker 2: you have to do a certain amount of Christian service hours.
- 37:53Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 37:54Speaker 2: And so that's just like– so every time I would
- 37:56Speaker 2: ever do something as an adult that I wasn't that
- 37:59Speaker 2: thrilled about, I would be like, Heather, just– compartmentalize. Those
- 38:04Speaker 2: are your Christian service hours to go to that shitty party.
- 38:06Speaker 4: You got to do that thing.
- 38:07Speaker 2: Yeah. Go do that thing and be like, be, be nice.
- 38:10Speaker 2: And so just to kind of like keep a balance.
- 38:13Speaker 2: But I remember going, wow, like this chair is really comfortable.
- 38:16Speaker 2: It's really nice to have a cup of coffee. The
- 38:18Speaker 2: music is better. This guy's pretty cute. I like his
- 38:21Speaker 2: tight jeans. This is like kind of fun.
- 38:23Speaker 4: It's kind of like more commercial.
- 38:24Speaker 2: Yeah. But then I would have the Catholic guilt of like, no, Heather,
- 38:28Speaker 2: you need to go To the boring mass where the
- 38:31Speaker 2: guy's accent is so strong you don't understand what he's saying.
- 38:34Speaker 2: The acoustics are horrible.
- 38:35Speaker 4: Can't hear.
- 38:36Speaker 2: Can't hear. You don't know what's going on. Then you
- 38:39Speaker 2: need to feel guilty because you didn't listen.
- 38:41Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 38:42Speaker 2: But at least you got in there so that when
- 38:44Speaker 2: you have that audition on Thursday, God will bless you.
- 38:47Speaker 4: Because you were there.
- 38:47Speaker 2: Because I was there.
- 38:48Speaker 4: Yeah, you got to leave Catholic church. You leave with
- 38:50Speaker 4: some guilt.
- 38:51Speaker 5: Totally.
- 38:51Speaker 4: Yeah, not in the megachurches. You leave feeling great. They
- 38:54Speaker 4: give you a cookie. You're– You feel good when you leave.
- 38:59Speaker 4: But I think I went to Catholic Church like a
- 39:01Speaker 4: month ago because I had never been.
- 39:03Speaker 2: Who took you?
- 39:04Speaker 4: My buddy Matt Fradd. Wait.
- 39:05Speaker 2: Oh, wait. I have that photo. Attending Catholic Church for
- 39:08Speaker 2: the first time. Okay. Tell me about that.
- 39:09Speaker 4: Well, he has a big podcast. He's like a famous Catholic.
- 39:15Speaker 4: I didn't even know there was.
- 39:16Speaker 2: Did he get to go to the Pope?
- 39:18Speaker 4: He's doing a pod with him, I think.
- 39:20Speaker 2: With the Pope? Yeah. But did he get to go
- 39:22Speaker 2: with Jim Gaffigan to the Pope?
- 39:24Speaker 4: No, he's not a comedian. He's not a comedian.
- 39:25Speaker 2: Do you know how annoyed I was when I saw
- 39:27Speaker 2: the people they invited? I was like, hello.
- 39:29Speaker 4: I didn't like that.
- 39:30Speaker 2: I'm like, hello. Like I did 12 years of Catholic
- 39:33Speaker 2: school paid for Catholic.
- 39:34Speaker 4: School for all my kids. Jim was there. Cause he's Catholic.
- 39:37Speaker 2: Oh yeah. But I mean, he deserves to be there,
- 39:39Speaker 2: but some of the other ones that were there were
- 39:41Speaker 2: not even Catholic.
- 39:42Speaker 4: And I was like, again, Just like the country club.
- 39:46Speaker 4: Just like– Yeah, they're overlooking Heather.
- 39:49Speaker 2: They're overlooking me.
- 39:50Speaker 4: I've been– I had the guilt since day one.
- 39:53Speaker 2: Yeah, I've been promoting.
- 39:55Speaker 4: They had some Jews in there. I go, you guys
- 39:57Speaker 4: are against each other.
- 39:58Speaker 2: Exactly. I would– we're never against each other. No, Catholic-Jewish
- 40:02Speaker 2: dialogue was like a class I took because it was
- 40:05Speaker 2: so similar and there was such a thing. But I
- 40:08Speaker 2: was in writer's– I was in writer's rooms. I'd done
- 40:11Speaker 2: podcasts where like my faith was challenged. Like somebody was like,
- 40:16Speaker 2: how do you believe what is wrong with you? And
- 40:19Speaker 2: then I would say why. And then they would, then
- 40:23Speaker 2: the podcast host would get so much hate for how
- 40:26Speaker 2: he treated me that then I'd be like, Hey, can
- 40:28Speaker 2: I be on your show again? And he was like,
- 40:29Speaker 2: Hell no. It's too much. It was too much. No,
- 40:31Speaker 2: and I'm like, I did nothing wrong. You were the
- 40:33Speaker 2: one that was mean to me.
- 40:34Speaker 4: You cornered me.
- 40:35Speaker 2: Yeah, and then people– so tell me about what you
- 40:39Speaker 2: thought when you went.
- 40:39Speaker 4: Well, a Catholic church, first of all, the first thing
- 40:42Speaker 4: I said was there's no lobby. If you listen– you
- 40:49Speaker 4: go in and you're in.
- 40:49Speaker 2: Yeah, you're in.
- 40:50Speaker 4: You open the door from the sidewalk and you're in.
- 40:53Speaker 4: I can smell it. I can smell it right now.
- 40:56Speaker 4: I can smell the Catholic church.
- 40:56Speaker 2: Yeah, you go in.
- 40:57Speaker 4: There's a little greet team, welcome center, kind of like
- 41:02Speaker 4: the moms gossiping in the front lobby. Not Catholic church.
- 41:06Speaker 4: They wasted no money. And also, you know what? Catholics
- 41:12Speaker 4: don't send the kids to a different– they're in. No.
- 41:16Speaker 2: You go through the whole– you have to sit and
- 41:18Speaker 2: hear the crying and you have to– Be pinched and
- 41:21Speaker 2: you have to.
- 41:21Speaker 4: That blew my mind.
- 41:23Speaker 2: No, it's.
- 41:23Speaker 4: We have, the kids go off to their own section.
- 41:25Speaker 2: Like color and stuff. Yeah, yeah.
- 41:27Speaker 4: They're coloring books and they learn about Jonah and the
- 41:29Speaker 4: whale and stuff like that.
- 41:30Speaker 2: Yeah, fun.
- 41:30Speaker 4: Not Catholics. But I think what has happened is why
- 41:34Speaker 4: Catholicism is hot is because it went so far the
- 41:38Speaker 4: other way.
- 41:38Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 41:38Speaker 4: That it's like, all right, let's, like when you have
- 41:41Speaker 4: a son, like you had to have taught him something.
- 41:44Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah.
- 41:45Speaker 4: So you go, well, hey, don't cuss.
- 41:47Speaker 2: Right. Why?
- 41:49Speaker 4: Or don't.
- 41:49Speaker 2: And I also just cussed like three times.
- 41:51Speaker 4: Or don't. When you're little.
- 41:52Speaker 2: Yes.
- 41:53Speaker 4: Or when other people are. Don't cuss. I have an infant.
- 41:55Speaker 2: Yes. Yes.
- 41:56Speaker 4: Don't cuss. Well, why?
- 41:57Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 41:57Speaker 4: Or don't steal.
- 41:59Speaker 2: Why?
- 41:59Speaker 4: It has to.
- 42:00Speaker 2: Come from something.
- 42:01Speaker 4: You have to. Every parent has to give something.
- 42:03Speaker 2: Yes.
- 42:04Speaker 4: Some semblance of why the world is. Why would we.
- 42:08Speaker 2: I didn't really realize like how lucky I was to
- 42:11Speaker 2: be raised with something until I got to college. And
- 42:13Speaker 2: my friend goes. And we're all just talking about there
- 42:16Speaker 2: was certain girls in my sorority that had gone to
- 42:18Speaker 2: other all-girl Catholic high schools. And my one friend goes,
- 42:22Speaker 2: have you ever noticed that anyone you meet that went
- 42:24Speaker 2: to an all-girl Catholic high school, nobody regrets it? Nobody says,
- 42:27Speaker 2: I wish I didn't go. And I thought, wow, that's interesting.
- 42:30Speaker 2: And then this one friend of mine later on goes,
- 42:32Speaker 2: I wish I knew the stories.
- 42:35Speaker 5: Really?
- 42:35Speaker 2: She goes, I don't know the stories you're talking about
- 42:38Speaker 2: because she wasn't raised as anything. And then I was like, oh, wow.
- 42:42Speaker 4: I am better than people.
- 42:45Speaker 2: But I just thought, you know, I never thought it
- 42:47Speaker 2: made sense when someone said it. We're not going to
- 42:49Speaker 2: raise our kid as anything because they should make their
- 42:51Speaker 2: own choice. Well, they're not going to seek it out.
- 42:53Speaker 2: You could teach it to them and then you should
- 42:55Speaker 2: be understanding if it's not their thing or if they
- 42:57Speaker 2: take a break. They still learn the basics of doing
- 43:01Speaker 2: unto others. And that's all I cared about because I
- 43:04Speaker 2: was like, you know, I'm.
- 43:05Speaker 4: Not super- Well, there's a second part of that, doing
- 43:07Speaker 4: to others. You just said the beginning.
- 43:09Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 43:10Speaker 2: As you'd have them doing.
- 43:10Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, yeah. Well, I think everybody, I think in,
- 43:13Speaker 4: I would say that when it becomes like, when people
- 43:17Speaker 4: have religious trauma or something, it's because they weren't allowed
- 43:20Speaker 4: to ask questions.
- 43:22Speaker 2: Yes.
- 43:22Speaker 4: So you go, hey, we're going to go to Catholic church. Why? Well,
- 43:25Speaker 4: we believe that a God created the universe. We do
- 43:28Speaker 4: believe that Not lying, not murder. We don't believe in that.
- 43:33Speaker 4: It's the general worldview of what we believe in life.
- 43:37Speaker 2: Yes.
- 43:37Speaker 4: And where people go astray is that you have to go,
- 43:42Speaker 4: don't ask questions.
- 43:43Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 43:43Speaker 4: This is what we're doing. And you go, why are
- 43:45Speaker 4: they wearing those outfits? And then why do we have
- 43:48Speaker 4: to do the confession? Nobody ever explained it.
- 43:50Speaker 2: Right, right.
- 43:51Speaker 4: And that's how people get off track, I think.
- 43:53Speaker 2: Totally.
- 43:54Speaker 4: And now there's, yeah.
- 43:56Speaker 2: And when... And entering– becoming a bigger star and doing
- 44:00Speaker 2: Hollywood stuff. Yeah. Now you had this success because you
- 44:04Speaker 2: were one of the few commercial comedians that also could
- 44:08Speaker 2: talk with knowledge about this very relatable thing of being
- 44:11Speaker 2: raised in the church.
- 44:13Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 44:14Speaker 2: Did you ever– did it ever get weird in that
- 44:17Speaker 2: Hollywood is– I mean I was in writers' rooms where
- 44:21Speaker 2: they would say, how could you send your kids to
- 44:23Speaker 2: a Catholic school? Are they getting molested today? And joke
- 44:26Speaker 2: with me. And recently I talked to a writer that
- 44:30Speaker 2: used to be on Chelsea with me and I was like, oh,
- 44:32Speaker 2: how are your kids? And he told me– now he
- 44:34Speaker 2: married a girl who was raised Catholic. And I go, oh,
- 44:37Speaker 2: where is your son going to go to school? And
- 44:38Speaker 2: he goes, oh, we're hoping to send him to Loyola.
- 44:41Speaker 2: which is a really great school here, and it's all boys.
- 44:44Speaker 2: And I go, oh, really? And you don't feel bad
- 44:47Speaker 2: that you, like, tormented me for eight years?
- 44:49Speaker 4: Well, well, well. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 44:51Speaker 2: And then he's like, and he paused, and he was like, no,
- 44:54Speaker 2: and kind of laughed, and I was like, That's all
- 44:57Speaker 2: you need.
- 44:57Speaker 4: That's all you need.
- 44:58Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah. Because I was like, yeah, it was like
- 45:00Speaker 2: actually hard to be a believer in Hollywood and not be.
- 45:06Speaker 2: And especially with comedy, which is so there's so many
- 45:08Speaker 2: comedians that are just cynical about it. And like they
- 45:11Speaker 2: just don't understand how you can have faith, you know, something.
- 45:16Speaker 4: Yeah. Some other like I remember this. I was like,
- 45:21Speaker 4: I'm not going to tell him your name. I'm not
- 45:23Speaker 4: going to tell the name because you probably know him.
- 45:25Speaker 2: Okay.
- 45:25Speaker 4: But I was like kind of like me too by
- 45:31Speaker 4: like a like a male comedian.
- 45:34Speaker 2: He said you hit on him?
- 45:35Speaker 4: No, he me too'd me. Oh, OK.
- 45:38Speaker 2: OK.
- 45:38Speaker 4: Does that make sense?
- 45:39Speaker 2: Oh, saying saying that you were.
- 45:41Speaker 4: He was very famous.
- 45:43Speaker 2: OK.
- 45:44Speaker 4: And I I was young comic.
- 45:46Speaker 2: OK.
- 45:46Speaker 4: And he and I go in essence kind of like.
- 45:51Speaker 4: I want to be successful. I want to be famous.
- 45:53Speaker 4: I want to be popular. I want to be but not.
- 45:56Speaker 4: At the extent of my.
- 45:59Speaker 2: So he was hitting on you. Romantically hitting on you.
- 46:02Speaker 4: Come to my room. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 46:05Speaker 2: Oh, okay.
- 46:05Speaker 3: Sorry.
- 46:06Speaker 4: That was confusing.
- 46:07Speaker 2: No, but I understand what you mean.
- 46:08Speaker 4: You're like, who me? Oh, okay.
- 46:10Speaker 2: And kind of laying it out as like you got it.
- 46:13Speaker 2: You understood. At first you didn't. And then I was like, oh, shit.
- 46:17Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 46:17Speaker 4: Like, you know, paying for things and coming to my room.
- 46:21Speaker 4: And I was a young comic and I was so hungry.
- 46:23Speaker 2: And adorable, I'm sure.
- 46:24Speaker 4: Well, thank you. You're so good looking.
- 46:26Speaker 2: But I can imagine.
- 46:28Speaker 4: But you go, well, I'm not doing that. Well, you're like, why?
- 46:35Speaker 4: Don't you want to be a comedian? But I go, yeah,
- 46:37Speaker 4: but my parents, I was raised with something. You know
- 46:42Speaker 4: what I'm saying?
- 46:43Speaker 2: Yes.
- 46:43Speaker 4: I go, I'm not doing that.
- 46:47Speaker 2: When those type of things.
- 46:48Speaker 4: Does that make sense?
- 46:48Speaker 2: Yes, because as a woman, it happened to me too.
- 46:51Speaker 2: And I remember thinking, but my parents live in Woodland Hills. I,
- 46:58Speaker 2: I'm not going to be homeless if I don't do
- 47:01Speaker 2: this thing. I can go to their house. They're going
- 47:04Speaker 2: to still support me. They're going to, you know, I
- 47:06Speaker 2: can work in real estate. I'm not, I didn't come
- 47:09Speaker 2: off a bus with nobody in Hollywood. I actually have
- 47:12Speaker 2: a whole support system.
- 47:14Speaker 4: It's like religion out of it. Just like parents that
- 47:17Speaker 4: were cared.
- 47:18Speaker 2: Yeah. And that, you know, and I, and I'm not
- 47:20Speaker 2: embarrassed to go home. I'm not embarrassed to say, It's
- 47:24Speaker 2: taken me this many years and I still haven't made
- 47:26Speaker 2: a dollar like I wasn't because I was just– no,
- 47:28Speaker 2: I know that I'm being entertaining. Even if I'm not
- 47:32Speaker 2: on a sitcom and even if I'm not making money,
- 47:34Speaker 2: I'm good at what I do.
- 47:35Speaker 4: It just has to take time. Do you ever do
- 47:36Speaker 4: anything like in auditions like sexually that you said you
- 47:40Speaker 4: wouldn't do or no?
- 47:41Speaker 2: No, but I did have this one. I met this
- 47:45Speaker 2: guy at a party, and he was an agent at
- 47:47Speaker 2: a major agency. And he got my number, and I,
- 47:51Speaker 2: of course, needed an agent. And I had this VHS
- 47:56Speaker 2: tape with all my little bits. And I did this
- 48:00Speaker 2: one-woman show of all my characters from the Groundlings and everything.
- 48:04Speaker 2: And so he's like, yeah, come over, and I bring
- 48:06Speaker 2: the tape.
- 48:07Speaker 4: To come over where?
- 48:08Speaker 2: To the agent, like to the Hollywood, like I go up,
- 48:11Speaker 2: you know, the secretary brings me in. I'm sitting there
- 48:14Speaker 2: and I'm like, you know, so like, you know, I
- 48:17Speaker 2: need an agent. And like, here's my here's all my
- 48:20Speaker 2: funny characters and everything. And he's like, come sit over here.
- 48:23Speaker 2: And it was a couch and he wasn't an old guy.
- 48:25Speaker 2: So it wasn't like completely creeped. But then, you know,
- 48:28Speaker 2: he's like making moves on me and stuff.
- 48:31Speaker 4: And crazy.
- 48:32Speaker 2: And I was just like, OK, then I leave.
- 48:36Speaker 4: But I still think he might represent me.
- 48:41Speaker 2: And then he, like, calls me one night for, like,
- 48:44Speaker 2: a booty call. And I'm like, can I just get–
- 48:46Speaker 2: because I, of course, dropped him off six tapes because
- 48:49Speaker 2: I'm thinking he's got to give it to everybody.
- 48:51Speaker 4: He wants me to come back and give him the
- 48:53Speaker 4: new tape.
- 48:53Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm the next Lisa Kudrow. Like, come on, you know, like,
- 48:56Speaker 2: get me on a sitcom. And so then I'm like,
- 48:59Speaker 2: I really need those tapes back because each tape costs, like, $ 10,
- 49:01Speaker 2: you know.
- 49:03Speaker 4: Come back to the office. I'll give you the tapes back.
- 49:09Speaker 2: You know, you try. So when you told the guy, like, no. Yeah.
- 49:14Speaker 2: Was it, did he then just drop you like a
- 49:16Speaker 2: hot potato and was sort of embarrassed of the rejection or?
- 49:20Speaker 5: No.
- 49:20Speaker 4: I just said– and I just said I'm just not–
- 49:24Speaker 4: I'm not going to come to your room because we
- 49:27Speaker 4: would tour.
- 49:28Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 49:28Speaker 4: Like he would bring me on tour.
- 49:30Speaker 2: So you're the opener or feature. Yeah.
- 49:32Speaker 4: But like– Which is a huge opportunity.
- 49:35Speaker 2: A huge, huge. I opened for Chelsea, and that was very,
- 49:39Speaker 2: very good for me. It also made sense since I
- 49:41Speaker 2: was on the show as well. But that is huge
- 49:43Speaker 2: for the stage time, to get in front of all
- 49:45Speaker 2: those people.
- 49:47Speaker 4: And looking back now, you're like, I was not skilled enough.
- 49:54Speaker 2: Right.
- 49:54Speaker 4: I shouldn't have been. And then you look back on
- 49:56Speaker 4: it now, you go, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh.
- 49:59Speaker 4: I thought this was on merit. They're like, no, dude.
- 50:02Speaker 2: No, you look like someone we could turn.
- 50:04Speaker 4: Yeah. You look vulnerable. It's not funny. It's not funny.
- 50:10Speaker 2: I know.
- 50:11Speaker 6: But it is.
- 50:13Speaker 4: Ego. And I still went on the road for a while.
- 50:17Speaker 4: And I do credit him. That's the thing. It's the
- 50:21Speaker 4: tricky part about this podcast because some of these people
- 50:25Speaker 4: are very very brilliant and talented would do anything for
- 50:29Speaker 4: you and they also have the darkest demons so all
- 50:34Speaker 4: the people that we on the pod you go what
- 50:35Speaker 4: do we make of them and you want to put
- 50:38Speaker 4: them here or here yeah like do we like this
- 50:41Speaker 4: guy now yeah or now this guy's out or taylor
- 50:44Speaker 4: frankie paul or whoever we're talking about you're like no
- 50:47Speaker 4: x and you're like well that if i you know
- 50:51Speaker 4: they could the people can be both that's what's tricky
- 50:55Speaker 4: Is this guy helped my career and would literally do
- 50:57Speaker 4: anything for me but also had like the darkest– is
- 51:00Speaker 4: sincerely would do anything for me.
- 51:01Speaker 2: Right. And also– I think it's different like with the
- 51:04Speaker 2: Taylor Frankie Paul.
- 51:05Speaker 4: I don't know why I brought her up.
- 51:06Speaker 2: No, no. But I'm just saying I think it's kind
- 51:07Speaker 2: of different when it's like a reality star because you
- 51:10Speaker 2: are entertaining to watch but you are not an entertainer.
- 51:13Speaker 2: You are not– you're not writing music. You're not singing.
- 51:17Speaker 2: You're not– you're not a comedian. You're not a writer. Right.
- 51:20Speaker 4: You're just a, you got to stay in the news.
- 51:22Speaker 2: But I still also think that she can absolutely come back.
- 51:24Speaker 2: Cause I think people forgive. I think they're less forgiving.
- 51:27Speaker 4: Kanye West came back.
- 51:28Speaker 2: Yeah. I think they're less forgiving of women. And I
- 51:30Speaker 2: think women are harsher on women. Um, but I think,
- 51:34Speaker 2: and then I think, you know, but I think for,
- 51:36Speaker 2: I think even more and more, the cancellation is shorter
- 51:41Speaker 2: periods of time. It's shorter and shorter and shorter.
- 51:44Speaker 4: But, um, Yeah, it goes less and less. Yeah.
- 51:47Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 51:47Speaker 4: When the other girl, the other girl in the is
- 51:50Speaker 4: doing great on Broadway. Chicago.
- 51:53Speaker 2: Yeah. She got on the show and was like a
- 51:56Speaker 2: dancer to begin with.
- 51:57Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 51:57Speaker 2: And she was like, I'm going to do this. And yeah,
- 52:01Speaker 2: I love this one. When you talk to the audience
- 52:03Speaker 2: about you got baptized or you Catholic, the baptism thing
- 52:07Speaker 2: is so interesting, too, because one thing I was going
- 52:10Speaker 2: to say about Christians is.
- 52:11Speaker 4: That I like– I can't wait for this generalization.
- 52:13Speaker 2: I like to get invited to parties. I like to
- 52:16Speaker 2: feel wanted.
- 52:17Speaker 5: Okay.
- 52:17Speaker 2: And I liked how in college and everything, I must
- 52:21Speaker 2: have been someone that they felt that they could get– Turn. Turn.
- 52:25Speaker 4: They could turn you.
- 52:26Speaker 2: Because I did like talking about Jesus and stuff.
- 52:29Speaker 4: You were generally interested.
- 52:29Speaker 2: Yeah. But then– and then they'd be like, are you saved?
- 52:32Speaker 2: And I was like, yes. Like I've always believed. So
- 52:35Speaker 2: how am I not– And then I was like, oh,
- 52:37Speaker 2: you know, like one time this cute guy was an essay.
- 52:39Speaker 2: He kept inviting me to go to this thing. And
- 52:41Speaker 2: I just thought, oh, he's so cute and he likes me.
- 52:44Speaker 2: And then I realized, oh, it was the Bible study,
- 52:46Speaker 2: you know, and it was a Bible study. Oh, she's
- 52:47Speaker 2: going to want to come to the Bible study. And
- 52:50Speaker 2: so the baptism thing, you know, we all get baptized
- 52:54Speaker 2: when you're young. Yeah. And then infant baptism. Yeah.
- 52:59Speaker 4: So you were that guy's service hours.
- 53:01Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 53:02Speaker 4: You're like, wait, I'm the service. He's like, yeah, there's
- 53:04Speaker 4: the service hours. I'm going to dinner with Heather for
- 53:08Speaker 4: the service hours.
- 53:09Speaker 2: My son said when he was at ASU, these guys
- 53:11Speaker 2: called and was like, hey, do you want to play whatever,
- 53:14Speaker 2: flag football or something?
- 53:15Speaker 4: The Arizona State?
- 53:16Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 53:16Speaker 4: I probably know who that ministry is.
- 53:17Speaker 2: So then he was like, yeah. He was excited that
- 53:20Speaker 2: people were like.
- 53:20Speaker 4: It's the bait and switch.
- 53:21Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 53:21Speaker 2: And then eventually it was like, hey, we're all going
- 53:23Speaker 2: to go to the Bible study after. Why don't you come?
- 53:26Speaker 2: And he was like, no. He was like, I went
- 53:28Speaker 2: through Catholic school. I don't need to now go to
- 53:31Speaker 2: a Bible study while I'm in college.
- 53:32Speaker 4: Also, now that... Oh, I thought we were buds.
- 53:35Speaker 2: Yeah, he would– I know.
- 53:37Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 53:37Speaker 2: It's like– it's up there with like joining an MLM,
- 53:40Speaker 2: like the lady being like, hey, girl.
- 53:42Speaker 4: Or the guy bringing you the– he'd bring me the tapes.
- 53:44Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 53:44Speaker 4: Like, oh, oh, okay, yeah, yeah. I said– I've always
- 53:48Speaker 4: said this about this whole– like everything in the podcast,
- 53:54Speaker 4: everything in this podcast, it comes down to gold, glory,
- 53:59Speaker 4: or girls. The three motivations for any kind of anything.
- 54:03Speaker 2: Oh, interesting.
- 54:03Speaker 4: It's gold, glory, or girls, meaning money, women, or power.
- 54:09Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 54:10Speaker 4: Like, why did they, you know, you do break down
- 54:13Speaker 4: everything and you go, it's one of those three.
- 54:15Speaker 2: Interesting.
- 54:16Speaker 4: It'll always be one of those three at the end
- 54:18Speaker 4: of the day.
- 54:18Speaker 2: For men, I guess, because I'm not doing it.
- 54:20Speaker 4: Well, yeah. I guess I, yeah.
- 54:22Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 54:22Speaker 4: But it's always, why are they, at the very end, oh, well,
- 54:26Speaker 4: they want to get, be tagged on Instagram so they can, oh,
- 54:29Speaker 4: so it's a, Right. It's always one of those three,
- 54:32Speaker 4: which has been around since the dawn of time.
- 54:34Speaker 2: Yeah, definitely. And it's even in this business when, you know,
- 54:37Speaker 2: I've been on the receiving end of thinking that this
- 54:41Speaker 2: person was my friend that I brought on the road
- 54:44Speaker 2: and helped and did all the things with and tagged
- 54:46Speaker 2: them a million times. And then they were becoming resentful
- 54:51Speaker 2: behind my back. It wasn't enough.
- 54:53Speaker 3: Crazy.
- 54:53Speaker 2: It wasn't enough.
- 54:54Speaker 4: Crazy.
- 54:54Speaker 2: And I was like, oh my God, like, why wouldn't
- 54:56Speaker 2: you just tell me it wasn't enough? Or, you know,
- 54:58Speaker 2: or I'm, you know, why did you, why did you
- 55:01Speaker 2: have to do this deceptive mean thing that like fucked
- 55:04Speaker 2: me up? Because like, I'm very fortunate in that I've
- 55:07Speaker 2: been married for 25 years and we've never had a
- 55:10Speaker 2: cheating on each other. But when, when it happened with
- 55:12Speaker 2: friends it's really you're like oh my god like the
- 55:16Speaker 2: two of you were like going around the court like.
- 55:18Speaker 4: What against me yeah like i was just like.
- 55:20Speaker 2: This is this is what it must feel like when
- 55:22Speaker 2: someone like has the hairs in the back of their
- 55:25Speaker 2: neck and they're suspicious of their man or their daughter
- 55:28Speaker 2: their girlfriend and then they find it later and they're
- 55:30Speaker 2: like i wasn't crazy oh you.
- 55:32Speaker 4: Know what i mean like i wasn't in i was
- 55:34Speaker 4: in rehab in 2019 uh for alcohol and they they
- 55:38Speaker 4: there's it was all men in there And they said that,
- 55:41Speaker 4: you know, everybody's at different stages of, uh, their marriage.
- 55:45Speaker 4: And he said that women, that every, you know, that
- 55:48Speaker 4: you're in there for four weeks and then your wife's
- 55:49Speaker 4: going to come and you have like, kind of like
- 55:52Speaker 4: a heart to heart. And he said, you know, all
- 55:57Speaker 4: the women were so relieved because they were like, okay,
- 56:01Speaker 4: thank God. I thought I was going crazy. Like, like
- 56:05Speaker 4: they would tell stories like, uh, I come home in
- 56:08Speaker 4: the guest room and I find a condom in the
- 56:10Speaker 4: guest room. And he was like, the husband is like,
- 56:15Speaker 4: the landscaper must've come in. And you're like, okay, you don't,
- 56:18Speaker 4: you go, okay. And then, and then you finally, you
- 56:21Speaker 4: finally realized this guy is cheating or is it? And
- 56:23Speaker 4: then you go, thank God.
- 56:25Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 56:26Speaker 4: Because I thought I was going insane.
- 56:29Speaker 1: Right.
- 56:29Speaker 4: And you're finally like, when you finally learn, Yeah. Oh,
- 56:34Speaker 4: it's very– it's going to be a disaster to kind
- 56:37Speaker 4: of work through it.
- 56:38Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah.
- 56:38Speaker 4: But at least they're like, shoot, at least– Yeah, the
- 56:41Speaker 4: gaslighting of.
- 56:42Speaker 2: Just like, yeah, like of that.
- 56:44Speaker 4: Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 56:47Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 56:47Speaker 4: It was very helpful, they said. It was all very helpful.
- 56:49Speaker 2: Yeah. So in your church, do people get baptized like
- 56:52Speaker 2: where they wear the outfits and go in a pool
- 56:54Speaker 2: and stuff?
- 56:55Speaker 4: That's a wild way to ask that question.
- 56:59Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 57:00Speaker 4: Well, they just wear your regular clothes.
- 57:03Speaker 1: Oh.
- 57:03Speaker 4: You just wear it. Hopefully dark, though. You don't wear
- 57:04Speaker 4: something white. But we got baptisms at our church coming
- 57:07Speaker 4: up on Sunday.
- 57:07Speaker 2: It's not like a wet t-shirt.
- 57:09Speaker 5: No.
- 57:09Speaker 2: I thought they were supposed to wear like white flowy.
- 57:12Speaker 4: Oh, that's in like a different denomination where they put
- 57:14Speaker 4: on a robe and then they full immersion into the water.
- 57:18Speaker 2: Okay.
- 57:18Speaker 4: We don't. Yeah. We do... We do like very– like
- 57:21Speaker 4: you do it in a horse trough at a barn
- 57:23Speaker 4: or in a river or somebody's pool.
- 57:24Speaker 2: But I mean essentially people could be baptized like 10 times.
- 57:26Speaker 4: It's a very– yeah.
- 57:27Speaker 2: You could be baptized a million different times in church
- 57:30Speaker 2: or say I need to be re-baptized.
- 57:31Speaker 4: Oh, but Catholic baptism is only once.
- 57:32Speaker 5: That's it.
- 57:33Speaker 2: You get your one.
- 57:33Speaker 4: Yeah, and you're good to go.
- 57:34Speaker 2: It's like a punch card of all the– Well, let's
- 57:36Speaker 2: not say it like that. Well, I'm just saying you get.
- 57:38Speaker 4: Your check off of that. I'm just kidding.
- 57:40Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah.
- 57:40Speaker 4: You have to be baptized.
- 57:41Speaker 2: Yeah, you have to be baptized. And then confirmation is
- 57:44Speaker 2: kind of like– That's like getting saved. No. So it
- 57:47Speaker 2: goes baptism, then confession, then confirmation, which is sort of
- 57:54Speaker 2: you can decide it. Like it just basically say I
- 57:57Speaker 2: confirm now that I'm a young teenager that I want.
- 57:59Speaker 4: You're old enough.
- 58:00Speaker 2: Yeah. Then it's like marriage.
- 58:02Speaker 4: Baptism was non-consensual.
- 58:03Speaker 2: Yeah. Then it's like, yeah. And then vow, like if
- 58:06Speaker 2: you're going to become like a priest or a nun
- 58:07Speaker 2: or whatever. And then that's the thing. And then last rites.
- 58:10Speaker 4: That's when you die.
- 58:11Speaker 2: Right, and that's only if you have the option to
- 58:13Speaker 2: like call the priest.
- 58:14Speaker 4: My friend is getting married to a Catholic guy and
- 58:20Speaker 4: she converted.
- 58:21Speaker 2: Okay.
- 58:21Speaker 4: At like 25.
- 58:23Speaker 2: Cool.
- 58:24Speaker 4: So how does that work? She got to go through
- 58:25Speaker 4: a class or something?
- 58:26Speaker 2: Yeah, she goes through a class.
- 58:27Speaker 4: If I wanted to become Catholic today, what would I do?
- 58:29Speaker 2: You'd go through like a class. It'd probably be like
- 58:32Speaker 2: Tuesday and Wednesday nights or whatever.
- 58:34Speaker 4: For how long?
- 58:34Speaker 2: I think they can do it. I mean, who knows
- 58:38Speaker 2: now if there's like an online element, but like definitely
- 58:40Speaker 2: the church online degree. Yeah. And I, I think it's
- 58:43Speaker 2: really beautiful when like an adult decides to do that. Like,
- 58:46Speaker 2: I think it's so cool. Um, my husband had some
- 58:50Speaker 2: familiarity with Catholicism cause he had like a grandmother who was,
- 58:55Speaker 2: but he wasn't raised in, he didn't go to school.
- 58:56Speaker 2: And then not until we were getting married.
- 58:59Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 59:00Speaker 2: But once we were getting married, when they said the
- 59:03Speaker 2: Our Father, I couldn't believe he knew it. I was like,
- 59:05Speaker 2: how do you know this? Like, how do you just
- 59:07Speaker 2: like came back to him from the grandma? But no,
- 59:10Speaker 2: just one of you has to be Catholic. And the
- 59:12Speaker 2: other one has to say, if we have if we
- 59:17Speaker 2: have kids, we will raise them Catholic. So you don't
- 59:19Speaker 2: have to convert if you don't want to.
- 59:20Speaker 4: You just have to say I'm on the team.
- 59:23Speaker 2: Yes. So my sister married a Jewish man, Goldstein, and
- 59:27Speaker 2: he just said the kids can be raised Catholic and
- 59:29Speaker 2: they were. And that's that.
- 59:31Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 59:32Speaker 4: So he didn't convert.
- 59:33Speaker 2: He never converted. He could have, but he never did.
- 59:36Speaker 2: And it was fine.
- 59:37Speaker 4: And it was fine.
- 59:38Speaker 2: I mean, I do think it's nice if you're both
- 59:40Speaker 2: are like into it, but as long as someone's not
- 59:43Speaker 2: like making you not go or something, you know what
- 59:45Speaker 2: I mean? Like, yeah. And they're not like fighting about the,
- 59:48Speaker 2: you know, so.
- 59:48Speaker 4: Isn't it marriage? I'm, I'm, I'm getting married in October.
- 59:52Speaker 2: How'd you meet your fiance?
- 59:53Speaker 4: On Instagram.
- 59:55Speaker 2: Oh.
- 59:56Speaker 4: I mean.
- 59:56Speaker 2: She slid in or you slid in?
- 59:58Speaker 4: I made a, I made a. Could have been me.
- 59:59Speaker 2: I've been sliding your DMs for years.
- 1:00:01Speaker 4: 2021.
- 1:00:02Speaker 5: In.
- 1:00:03Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:00:03Speaker 4: I made a, I made a spoof video about the news.
- 1:00:07Speaker 2: Okay.
- 1:00:07Speaker 4: Making fun of the news about how news anchors like
- 1:00:10Speaker 4: in the snow.
- 1:00:11Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:00:11Speaker 4: They're like, why am I out here? You can see
- 1:00:13Speaker 4: it snowing. Why do I need to be?
- 1:00:14Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:00:14Speaker 4: It was a fake. It was back in 20, I
- 1:00:17Speaker 4: don't know, six, 2020 or something like that. And she
- 1:00:20Speaker 4: does that for a living. She's a news anchor. She
- 1:00:22Speaker 4: works for NBC. And somebody sent her my video. They're like,
- 1:00:25Speaker 4: look at this guy making fun of news anchors. Somebody
- 1:00:28Speaker 4: sent me a video of her doing it sincerely. And
- 1:00:31Speaker 4: I thought she was cute, and I slid into her DMs.
- 1:00:34Speaker 2: See, I feel that's very like the universe working in
- 1:00:37Speaker 2: God in your favor. Like that's just kind of.
- 1:00:39Speaker 4: And I was in rehab. This is what's wild about
- 1:00:42Speaker 4: my whole story, that I was in like– burned my
- 1:00:45Speaker 4: life to the ground. I was in rehab, and I–
- 1:00:48Speaker 4: there was no– They would like let us watch TV
- 1:00:52Speaker 4: on like the weekends for like three hours. And we
- 1:00:56Speaker 4: were watching the local news because there was no Netflix
- 1:01:00Speaker 4: or there was nothing.
- 1:01:02Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:01:02Speaker 4: And I was watching that. We watched the local news
- 1:01:04Speaker 4: and I saw a news anchor like doing that. And
- 1:01:06Speaker 4: I was like, when I get out of rehab, I'm
- 1:01:07Speaker 4: going to make a joke about that. If you don't
- 1:01:10Speaker 4: believe in God.
- 1:01:11Speaker 2: I believe, I mean, I love all that stuff.
- 1:01:13Speaker 4: I know, dude, I know.
- 1:01:14Speaker 2: And as I get older, I feel like it's, I
- 1:01:17Speaker 2: don't know if it's just me, I don't know if
- 1:01:18Speaker 2: it's the universe or my, whatever. But it happens so
- 1:01:22Speaker 2: much more now. Like, I'll literally think of somebody that
- 1:01:26Speaker 2: I hadn't talked to in a while and I'll get
- 1:01:27Speaker 2: a text from them within an hour. Like, within an hour.
- 1:01:31Speaker 2: And I'm just like, What is that? There's just so
- 1:01:33Speaker 2: many things. And like, my parents are both passed, so
- 1:01:36Speaker 2: there'll be little things like, I'll tell a story about
- 1:01:39Speaker 2: my dad with a bunch of girlfriends and we're about
- 1:01:41Speaker 2: to go to the spa. And then they're like, Heather,
- 1:01:44Speaker 2: you know, it's your turn to go to the spa.
- 1:01:46Speaker 2: Here's the key to your, to your locker. And my
- 1:01:49Speaker 2: dad's sports number was 34 and it's 34.
- 1:01:52Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:01:52Speaker 2: Like just, just like, just like, like just all those
- 1:01:55Speaker 2: kinds of like signs. And I'm like, just think it's amazing.
- 1:01:58Speaker 2: And then, and throughout life of like, knowing like whether
- 1:02:02Speaker 2: you work like manifestation or whatever even if you're not
- 1:02:04Speaker 2: like really working it though you'll look back and you're
- 1:02:08Speaker 2: like i thought of that or i saw that or
- 1:02:10Speaker 2: i said one day that'll be me and now it's
- 1:02:12Speaker 2: me and like i love all that i think it's so.
- 1:02:14Speaker 4: Powerful yeah i do and you look at the it's
- 1:02:18Speaker 4: a dark and you look at the universe and you
- 1:02:20Speaker 4: go my word yeah it's you just go i'm not
- 1:02:24Speaker 4: sure the cat they wear weird hats and the thing
- 1:02:28Speaker 4: with the chanting i'm not sure about all that yeah
- 1:02:30Speaker 4: but There's got to be something. I think that's the
- 1:02:35Speaker 4: start of it. Or my– I had a loved one
- 1:02:39Speaker 4: pass away or a child being born.
- 1:02:43Speaker 2: Do you think you ever missed out on opportunities in
- 1:02:47Speaker 2: the business because they are prejudiced about the fact that
- 1:02:52Speaker 2: you are someone of faith?
- 1:02:59Speaker 4: It's– I don't know if this is a– I just
- 1:03:04Speaker 4: think it's a crutch to people to blame stuff. It's
- 1:03:06Speaker 4: like a lot of times people are like, oh, it's
- 1:03:07Speaker 4: because I'm Democrat that the Republican, I go, it's not
- 1:03:10Speaker 4: good enough.
- 1:03:11Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:03:12Speaker 4: You know, like, oh, it's because I'm Christian that I go,
- 1:03:15Speaker 4: it's not that good also. Oh, it's because I'm a
- 1:03:18Speaker 4: lesbian or it's because I'm black. I go, people don't,
- 1:03:21Speaker 4: they want to make money.
- 1:03:23Speaker 3: Right.
- 1:03:23Speaker 4: They don't care about if someone's anything.
- 1:03:26Speaker 2: And I always say there's so many entities. Can you
- 1:03:30Speaker 2: be blackballed for one particular show because someone hates you
- 1:03:34Speaker 2: and is the person who's the talent booker? Yes. Sure. Yes.
- 1:03:38Speaker 2: But there's other shows you could get on too. So
- 1:03:40Speaker 2: it's like, yes, sometimes that'll happen and you'll never know why.
- 1:03:44Speaker 4: And it's not with the victim.
- 1:03:45Speaker 2: Yeah, like you'll never know why.
- 1:03:47Speaker 4: It's a nice– there's a comic in our scene that
- 1:03:52Speaker 4: is– one is a female. She's like, it's because I'm female.
- 1:03:55Speaker 4: I go, the GM of the club is a female.
- 1:04:00Speaker 4: Or it's because I'm black. I go, I assure you,
- 1:04:04Speaker 4: it is not. Right.
- 1:04:07Speaker 2: And I mean, it's never been a better time to
- 1:04:10Speaker 2: not be a white straight male. And in my day, like, yes,
- 1:04:15Speaker 2: there would be 10 people on the bill at like
- 1:04:17Speaker 2: the LA Improv. And it would be eight straight guys,
- 1:04:21Speaker 2: one black guy, one woman. And unless we want, if
- 1:04:24Speaker 2: we wanted more than one woman, we would put our
- 1:04:25Speaker 2: own show together.
- 1:04:26Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:04:27Speaker 2: And I feel like it all did work out and
- 1:04:32Speaker 2: it was, but it was also like, you know, there
- 1:04:35Speaker 2: was TV shows, you know, so you always were like
- 1:04:37Speaker 2: trying to get a sitcom, right? There wasn't podcasts and
- 1:04:40Speaker 2: Instagram and reels. And I realized like the executives that
- 1:04:44Speaker 2: were choosing would be a certain type of guy. And
- 1:04:49Speaker 2: then they would really, they'd see everybody perform and they
- 1:04:52Speaker 2: would gravitate towards the guy that lived their childhood. So
- 1:04:57Speaker 2: they'd be like, that's the funniest guy because comedy is
- 1:05:00Speaker 2: subjective and you relate to who you relate to. So
- 1:05:03Speaker 2: my stuff about being Catholic and sorority girl and valley girl,
- 1:05:06Speaker 2: there was no executives that were like, oh my God,
- 1:05:10Speaker 2: I grew up in Woodland Hills and went to USC
- 1:05:11Speaker 2: and I know exactly who this chick is. Now there's
- 1:05:15Speaker 2: such a variety and there's such a way to find
- 1:05:17Speaker 2: your own audience without the gatekeeping of only having television stations.
- 1:05:22Speaker 2: So that's what I think is so great about today.
- 1:05:26Speaker 4: If you go to Zany's, like I live right next
- 1:05:28Speaker 4: to Zany's in Nashville. There's two rooms now. There's probably
- 1:05:32Speaker 4: five shows a day. There's probably 20-plus shows a week.
- 1:05:36Speaker 4: And it's like when I was coming up, you would
- 1:05:39Speaker 4: just go to the comedy club. You wouldn't look. There
- 1:05:42Speaker 4: was no YouTube. There was no– you wouldn't look. It
- 1:05:45Speaker 4: had to be Jerry Seinfeld, Jay Leno for everyone. It
- 1:05:48Speaker 4: had to be for everyone. Now there's like black, Jewish,
- 1:05:53Speaker 4: gay comics. And if you don't get it, you're like,
- 1:05:55Speaker 4: I don't know this guy's podcast. I have no idea
- 1:05:57Speaker 4: who this is. And the lines wrapped around the block twice.
- 1:06:00Speaker 2: Yeah, great.
- 1:06:00Speaker 4: For that.
- 1:06:01Speaker 2: Yeah, because they found there's like.
- 1:06:04Speaker 4: A comic that's from Wisconsin and he just does Wisconsin.
- 1:06:08Speaker 2: Great.
- 1:06:09Speaker 4: And everybody that like used to live in Wisconsin are like,
- 1:06:12Speaker 4: we love this guy.
- 1:06:12Speaker 2: That's what I think is so great because there was
- 1:06:14Speaker 2: exactly what I'm saying.
- 1:06:15Speaker 4: It was like, there's no excuse now.
- 1:06:17Speaker 2: Yeah, like, you know, and it's it's so I think
- 1:06:20Speaker 2: that's really great going back because you brought it up
- 1:06:22Speaker 2: and that you went through this hard time. I, you know,
- 1:06:25Speaker 2: I wasn't going to bring it up because you, but
- 1:06:26Speaker 2: since you brought up, I want to say, I really
- 1:06:28Speaker 2: think it's great how you dealt with that and you
- 1:06:31Speaker 2: took that chunk of time. I think if more people
- 1:06:35Speaker 2: that fall into a hard moment, just put their phone down,
- 1:06:40Speaker 2: maybe don't perform for six months and just take that time.
- 1:06:45Speaker 2: I don't think enough people take the time that's necessary.
- 1:06:48Speaker 2: And then when you come back, you can come back.
- 1:06:51Speaker 2: You can come back and be stronger than ever. But
- 1:06:53Speaker 2: I think so many times people are like, well, I,
- 1:06:56Speaker 2: you know, and that must've been like shocking to have
- 1:06:58Speaker 2: to turn stuff down and cancel your tour and put
- 1:07:02Speaker 2: your book on hold and all of that.
- 1:07:04Speaker 4: Oh, you did do some research.
- 1:07:05Speaker 2: But I do think, well, I remember when it was
- 1:07:07Speaker 2: happening too. And I remember thinking that you were handling
- 1:07:09Speaker 2: it right. And I think in this day and age,
- 1:07:12Speaker 2: like that's a lesson to learn. Like it doesn't mean
- 1:07:15Speaker 2: it's over. It just means like, take a breath. I mean,
- 1:07:18Speaker 2: you know, and just like get, Get good, you know,
- 1:07:21Speaker 2: with yourself.
- 1:07:22Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:07:23Speaker 4: Well, first of all, the only reason we're probably talking
- 1:07:25Speaker 4: about this is because you did go around my publicist,
- 1:07:28Speaker 4: that you did DM me directly. Like, if you would
- 1:07:30Speaker 4: have talked to them, they would have been like, that's
- 1:07:32Speaker 4: so funny, dude.
- 1:07:33Speaker 2: If you want something cut out, this is not live either.
- 1:07:35Speaker 4: I like to talk about it. They don't want me
- 1:07:36Speaker 4: to talk about it. I like to talk about it
- 1:07:38Speaker 4: all the time.
- 1:07:38Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:07:39Speaker 4: I think it's part of my story. It's awesome. It
- 1:07:43Speaker 4: was 2019, and I had a Netflix special coming out.
- 1:07:49Speaker 4: in that fall and I was like on the Tonight
- 1:07:52Speaker 4: Show and I had a book deal and I was
- 1:07:54Speaker 4: like performing in churches but I was also like getting
- 1:07:58Speaker 4: drunk like and like doing all kind of behavior that
- 1:08:03Speaker 4: was not you can't do that it's like it's kind
- 1:08:05Speaker 4: of like if you remove the part of the religion
- 1:08:09Speaker 4: that is tough is the shame involved in it but
- 1:08:11Speaker 4: if it's kind of like well these are the rules
- 1:08:14Speaker 4: you can't wear jeans on Friday I wore jeans on
- 1:08:16Speaker 4: Friday and I got fired.
- 1:08:19Speaker 2: Oh, from doing the church kick?
- 1:08:20Speaker 4: Yeah. But they were like, you can't. You can't. There's
- 1:08:23Speaker 4: a kind of unspoken rule that if you're performing in
- 1:08:29Speaker 4: church that you probably are behaving as a Christian.
- 1:08:32Speaker 3: Right.
- 1:08:32Speaker 4: Got it. And I wasn't.
- 1:08:34Speaker 2: Oh, okay.
- 1:08:35Speaker 4: So that all kind of– there was whispers on Twitter
- 1:08:37Speaker 4: and that stuff kind of came out. But it was
- 1:08:38Speaker 4: also like every– all of my comedian buddies– Or like
- 1:08:44Speaker 4: they would read that article about me. They're like, this
- 1:08:46Speaker 4: sounds like a regular Tuesday.
- 1:08:47Speaker 2: So when I read it, you know, and it was
- 1:08:50Speaker 2: just that like you're flirting with women that might have–
- 1:08:53Speaker 2: I'd be married or something and they were flirting with you.
- 1:08:56Speaker 2: I mean in the scheme– Yeah, yeah, That's what everybody said.
- 1:08:59Speaker 4: That's what everybody said.
- 1:09:00Speaker 2: From Woody Allen to Louis C.K. to– who was the other?
- 1:09:06Speaker 4: Aziz.
- 1:09:07Speaker 2: Aziz. Aziz who just kind of had what I would
- 1:09:10Speaker 2: refer to as bad bedside manner. Yeah. Act like you're
- 1:09:13Speaker 2: a little more into her when you're calling the Uber.
- 1:09:16Speaker 2: Just act a little more into her.
- 1:09:17Speaker 4: She's going to get her feelings hurt by that.
- 1:09:19Speaker 2: But like, yeah. And then it was like.
- 1:09:21Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:09:23Speaker 4: You. I was pretty down, pretty far down on the list.
- 1:09:26Speaker 2: You. But that's what was so honestly like noble about it.
- 1:09:30Speaker 2: Like that you were like, no, this was wrong. And
- 1:09:32Speaker 2: I am this person. And that is why it's wrong.
- 1:09:35Speaker 2: And that's why I'm going to go make myself right.
- 1:09:36Speaker 2: And you proactively ended this stuff for yourself.
- 1:09:42Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:09:43Speaker 2: Which is like amazing.
- 1:09:45Speaker 4: I would probably say I look back on that. So
- 1:09:47Speaker 4: it was a lot of– it was 2019, which is
- 1:09:52Speaker 4: a very– in terms– remember people were like just– executives
- 1:09:55Speaker 4: were like, I slept with a girl in college. I'm quitting.
- 1:09:59Speaker 4: People were like proactively quitting their jobs. Remember that?
- 1:10:02Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:10:03Speaker 4: It was so scary. It was so– and like the
- 1:10:05Speaker 4: Harvey Weinstein. It was so scary.
- 1:10:06Speaker 2: Like 17 to like 21 was like– Terrifying.
- 1:10:09Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:10:10Speaker 4: And then– It was a lot of like, it was so,
- 1:10:16Speaker 4: with the religion aspect of it, it like adds a
- 1:10:21Speaker 4: whole nother level of like, I don't know, I guess
- 1:10:26Speaker 4: I was so scared. If you look back on it,
- 1:10:28Speaker 4: maybe I should have been like, yeah, I'm not perfect.
- 1:10:32Speaker 4: And I could have just gone touring. But again, I
- 1:10:34Speaker 4: got sober because of that.
- 1:10:36Speaker 2: Yeah, so it was like everything falls in the way
- 1:10:38Speaker 2: it's supposed to, which is also like believing in faith.
- 1:10:41Speaker 2: And I hate to say that, and.
- 1:10:41Speaker 4: I'm getting married in October. Like I thought the way
- 1:10:44Speaker 4: I was going would have no shot to be in
- 1:10:48Speaker 4: a healthy relationship or marriage. I hate to say that
- 1:10:53Speaker 4: cancellation– 100%.
- 1:10:55Speaker 2: Does that make sense?
- 1:10:57Speaker 4: No, I mean– It was kind of good. It saved
- 1:10:59Speaker 4: my life. Yeah, absolutely. And I hate to say that
- 1:11:02Speaker 4: because I don't want people to be calling people out
- 1:11:05Speaker 4: publicly– I don't think that's the way forward.
- 1:11:07Speaker 2: Well, I remember reading your thing and I was like, wow,
- 1:11:10Speaker 2: this is like, it's not like you actually were a pastor.
- 1:11:14Speaker 4: Of a church with a wife.
- 1:11:16Speaker 2: And three kids and banishing people that, you know, it
- 1:11:20Speaker 2: was just that you were part of that world. And
- 1:11:23Speaker 2: I thought, wow, that is real. That shows that he
- 1:11:25Speaker 2: actually does walk the walk because he like wants to
- 1:11:28Speaker 2: do better.
- 1:11:28Speaker 4: That's wild to hear that from you because I didn't cry. No,
- 1:11:32Speaker 4: I didn't. I didn't. Yeah, I didn't think that. It's
- 1:11:38Speaker 4: wild to hear. I mean, yeah, it was a very. I'm, like, sorry.
- 1:11:46Speaker 2: I'm not a normal comedian podcaster. I actually, like, talk
- 1:11:50Speaker 2: about shit like this. So this is probably, like, not
- 1:11:52Speaker 2: what you were expecting today.
- 1:11:55Speaker 4: It was so, like, a lot of people like you or, like,
- 1:12:03Speaker 4: reached out to me. I was getting crushed on the internet, obviously,
- 1:12:06Speaker 4: on Twitter, but there were so many people that were like,
- 1:12:09Speaker 4: that's probably how you heard of me.
- 1:12:12Speaker 2: No, I had knew about you before, because I'd seen
- 1:12:15Speaker 2: your stuff, and I thought it was really funny, and
- 1:12:17Speaker 2: I loved, like, the pastor and the jet, the pastor
- 1:12:20Speaker 2: that has a jet, all that kind of stuff. So, like,
- 1:12:22Speaker 2: I thought it was really funny, and then I just was, like,
- 1:12:25Speaker 2: reading it, and I kept trying to find, like, the
- 1:12:28Speaker 2: bad part.
- 1:12:30Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:12:30Speaker 4: And I was kind of reading for some key words.
- 1:12:33Speaker 2: What is going to happen? And then I was like,
- 1:12:34Speaker 2: Oh my God. Like, and so then to see, then
- 1:12:38Speaker 2: you like come back and find you and you're doing
- 1:12:41Speaker 2: your funny stuff again. And I just thought, this is
- 1:12:44Speaker 2: what it's supposed to be. Like, this is what it's
- 1:12:46Speaker 2: supposed to be. Your life shouldn't be an entertainment should
- 1:12:50Speaker 2: be this, you know, providing, you know, you're not, You know,
- 1:12:55Speaker 2: violating women, children, men and, you.
- 1:12:57Speaker 4: Know, murdering people.
- 1:12:58Speaker 2: But like things that I'm just like, wow, like that
- 1:13:01Speaker 2: was so just important to see. And when you think
- 1:13:06Speaker 2: about your life now and how you found. The love
- 1:13:10Speaker 2: of your life and every I just think it's like
- 1:13:11Speaker 2: such a beautiful story because it's it's true. It's like
- 1:13:15Speaker 2: it's very much, you know, I believe in like everything
- 1:13:17Speaker 2: happens for a reason. And I believe in life's rejection
- 1:13:20Speaker 2: is God's protection. And sometimes you don't realize that you
- 1:13:23Speaker 2: spend three years laying in bed going, I regret this.
- 1:13:26Speaker 2: I regret this. I regret this. And then all of
- 1:13:27Speaker 2: a sudden you're like, well. on the small level if
- 1:13:32Speaker 2: I didn't do that I wouldn't have had this hilarious
- 1:13:33Speaker 2: bit if I didn't do this I wouldn't have you
- 1:13:36Speaker 2: know ended up here I wouldn't have met and then
- 1:13:38Speaker 2: you're like oh my god I wouldn't I mean even
- 1:13:40Speaker 2: for me with this podcast I had career things that
- 1:13:43Speaker 2: I regret it like for a long time. And then
- 1:13:46Speaker 2: one day I woke up and I'm like, the show
- 1:13:48Speaker 2: wouldn't be here if I hadn't fucked up over here
- 1:13:52Speaker 2: and then missed a bunch of opportunities because of this
- 1:13:55Speaker 2: fuck up. And I could only work on this. And
- 1:13:58Speaker 2: now thank God I have this and I have no
- 1:14:00Speaker 2: envy to be over here.
- 1:14:02Speaker 4: That's what I said at the beginning.
- 1:14:04Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:14:04Speaker 4: And if you didn't have this pot, like imagine going
- 1:14:06Speaker 4: into those like audition rooms with like, yeah, And you
- 1:14:11Speaker 4: can say whatever you want and have whatever conversations you want.
- 1:14:13Speaker 4: You go, Oh, thank God. Like I can, anybody can
- 1:14:17Speaker 4: go back and if they don't know the article that I,
- 1:14:21Speaker 4: that you can go back and look at it. I
- 1:14:22Speaker 4: got no shame about it. It doesn't, you know, it
- 1:14:25Speaker 4: doesn't hold any kind of shame for me. And I've,
- 1:14:30Speaker 4: I'm a, it's, it's just wild. It's truly wild. Cause
- 1:14:34Speaker 4: if people don't believe in God or like that, there
- 1:14:38Speaker 4: is some kind of, plan for you. I mean, I
- 1:14:42Speaker 4: remember being so mad at God, like a journal that
- 1:14:46Speaker 4: all we had was like journals and it would just write,
- 1:14:48Speaker 4: this is a, this is a horrible plan. But then
- 1:14:52Speaker 4: you come kind of come through it. What's, what's truly
- 1:14:55Speaker 4: wild is it was fall of 2019. So I had
- 1:14:59Speaker 4: a music manager. He was not a comedian manager. I
- 1:15:02Speaker 4: was about to release the Netflix special and then go
- 1:15:05Speaker 4: on a stadium tour, not a stadium tour, sorry, an
- 1:15:08Speaker 4: arena tour.
- 1:15:09Speaker 2: Oh, my God.
- 1:15:10Speaker 4: I had no material. Because I'd been working for 10
- 1:15:14Speaker 4: years for my first Netflix special, and he didn't know
- 1:15:17Speaker 4: that you got to kind of go.
- 1:15:18Speaker 2: Yeah, you can't just do the exact Netflix special that
- 1:15:20Speaker 2: everybody just saw.
- 1:15:21Speaker 4: Yeah, because in music, you do. You do the album,
- 1:15:24Speaker 4: and then you go tour it. And then I was like.
- 1:15:27Speaker 2: Oh, my God. What a panic.
- 1:15:29Speaker 4: And then it got canceled, and then COVID happened. So
- 1:15:34Speaker 4: everything got canceled.
- 1:15:35Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:15:35Speaker 4: This is kind of perfect.
- 1:15:37Speaker 2: Yeah, too.
- 1:15:38Speaker 4: And now I have a new show that we're working
- 1:15:42Speaker 4: on that we have been more successful by far than
- 1:15:46Speaker 4: we ever would. That arena tour could have been the end.
- 1:15:50Speaker 2: Right, because you could have bombed or disappointed. No, I
- 1:15:52Speaker 2: would have bombed.
- 1:15:54Speaker 4: And I had no material.
- 1:15:55Speaker 2: Yeah. So you go.
- 1:15:57Speaker 4: Yeah, even if you're like an atheist or you go, hey,
- 1:16:01Speaker 4: that's fine. I'm not going to try to press it
- 1:16:03Speaker 4: on you, but there's some things that happen in life
- 1:16:07Speaker 4: that are too like, what?
- 1:16:11Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:16:11Speaker 4: That is just, yeah.
- 1:16:13Speaker 2: Amazing.
- 1:16:14Speaker 4: That is too much to, I mean, when you're in treatment,
- 1:16:20Speaker 4: I never, I was so, everybody was so sad. that's
- 1:16:24Speaker 4: like the best comedy came from. Does it always sound.
- 1:16:27Speaker 2: Like your team, you mean, and your family or what?
- 1:16:29Speaker 4: No, the, everybody just wanted me to get help, the
- 1:16:32Speaker 4: people in there, because everybody burned their lives to the ground.
- 1:16:34Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:16:35Speaker 4: And I remember one guy goes, my buddy Warren, we
- 1:16:39Speaker 4: were all in there together. He had blown his life up.
- 1:16:42Speaker 4: We'd all blown our lives up. And he, you know,
- 1:16:45Speaker 4: I was starting to kind of feel better, start to
- 1:16:47Speaker 4: get a little like, oh, maybe I can, I don't
- 1:16:49Speaker 4: know about to ever do comedy again, but I'll be
- 1:16:51Speaker 4: able to go to the golf course and, I was like,
- 1:16:54Speaker 4: am I getting sued? Do I have any money? And
- 1:16:56Speaker 4: they were like, yeah, it's not an ideal situation, but
- 1:16:58Speaker 4: you're going to be fine. And I started to kind
- 1:17:00Speaker 4: of have some pep in my step, you know. And
- 1:17:03Speaker 4: he puts his arm around me one day. We're on
- 1:17:05Speaker 4: a walk. We're on a hike. And he goes, hey,
- 1:17:09Speaker 4: it looks like you're doing a lot better here and
- 1:17:11Speaker 4: you make a lot of progress. I just want to
- 1:17:13Speaker 4: let you know, don't take suicide off the table just yet.
- 1:17:18Speaker 4: You know, like we would die. We were so, like
- 1:17:21Speaker 4: humor was so. That's the most morbid thing I've ever heard,
- 1:17:25Speaker 4: but we've died. The comedy was so fresh and so painful.
- 1:17:31Speaker 4: The world was so painful that it was like comedy.
- 1:17:36Speaker 4: I fell in love with comedy all over again and
- 1:17:40Speaker 4: all the things that happened in the world, by the way,
- 1:17:41Speaker 4: since then.
- 1:17:43Speaker 2: And you have to be in a mindset to be creative.
- 1:17:48Speaker 2: You can still kind of chug along, but then when
- 1:17:50Speaker 2: you're in a great place mental state because it's like
- 1:17:54Speaker 2: you have to go on stage whether you know something
- 1:17:56Speaker 2: horrible just happened or you got a text or something
- 1:17:59Speaker 2: that you got to go on you got to be
- 1:18:00Speaker 2: like hello how you.
- 1:18:02Speaker 4: Doing tonight yeah introduce you.
- 1:18:04Speaker 2: And get in the moment and still enjoy talking to
- 1:18:07Speaker 2: the people and telling stories and all that you can't
- 1:18:09Speaker 2: just like blow it off because you need a mental
- 1:18:11Speaker 2: health day it's like not you can't do it.
- 1:18:13Speaker 4: I'm sure people message you all the time just because
- 1:18:16Speaker 4: of how big this podcast is you're like hey i've
- 1:18:18Speaker 4: been going through a tough time in my life and
- 1:18:20Speaker 4: your pod is It provides me an escape. I feel
- 1:18:24Speaker 4: like I'm part of this community. I feel like you are, like,
- 1:18:28Speaker 4: doing it. And you could hear directly from those people.
- 1:18:30Speaker 2: I mean, I love it. And I still have that, like,
- 1:18:33Speaker 2: you know, guilt where, like, on occasion there was, like,
- 1:18:35Speaker 2: a mistake where, like, I had some work for me.
- 1:18:39Speaker 2: They put up the wrong podcast. Like, they put Tuesday's
- 1:18:41Speaker 2: podcast again on Thursday.
- 1:18:43Speaker 5: Oh, yeah.
- 1:18:43Speaker 2: And, of course, it goes up at, like, 1 a.m.,
- 1:18:45Speaker 2: you know, or midnight on the East Coast. So I
- 1:18:48Speaker 2: wake up on the West Coast to, like, all these—
- 1:18:50Speaker 2: messages of just people like hi you know and I
- 1:18:52Speaker 2: literally thought about the people that mentally really depend on
- 1:18:56Speaker 2: waking up on their commute whatever and it wasn't what
- 1:19:01Speaker 2: they want and I was just like.
- 1:19:03Speaker 4: Oh, my gosh. Oh, my gosh.
- 1:19:05Speaker 2: I'm so sorry.
- 1:19:06Speaker 6: I'm not.
- 1:19:06Speaker 2: Because I've been so consistent that they like depend on
- 1:19:09Speaker 2: it so much. And it's like because they're so great,
- 1:19:12Speaker 2: you know?
- 1:19:13Speaker 4: And it's not, by the way, no one's saying that
- 1:19:16Speaker 4: to the lady that's in the Febreze commercial.
- 1:19:18Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:19:18Speaker 4: Or whatever, whatever anyone else is doing. Not that other
- 1:19:21Speaker 4: people's work doesn't matter. But like if you have, if
- 1:19:24Speaker 4: I believe truly, if you do have that ability, like
- 1:19:27Speaker 4: every time people are sad, they go to art.
- 1:19:30Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:19:31Speaker 4: They don't go, they go to art. They go to music.
- 1:19:33Speaker 4: They go to podcasts. They go to comedy. They go
- 1:19:35Speaker 4: to something. If you truly had that ability, I believe,
- 1:19:39Speaker 4: to give that gift to other people. Like, who's your favorite?
- 1:19:44Speaker 4: Like Chris Martin from Coldplay. You're like, gosh, dude, what
- 1:19:46Speaker 4: if he never did it? What if he never? Who
- 1:19:49Speaker 4: are you to that? I believe God gives people these talents.
- 1:19:53Speaker 4: Who are you to not?
- 1:19:55Speaker 2: Well, like I didn't, I wasn't pursuing it at first.
- 1:19:57Speaker 2: I thought I'll be like a businesswoman. Then I was like, well,
- 1:20:01Speaker 2: I mean, I just was like, I knew how hard
- 1:20:03Speaker 2: it was to make it in acting growing up here
- 1:20:05Speaker 2: and stuff. But I knew I had this, like, comedy
- 1:20:08Speaker 2: gift that, like, I could imitate and do impressions. And
- 1:20:11Speaker 2: I just remember I kind of came to the conclusion, like,
- 1:20:14Speaker 2: if I don't pursue this gift that not everybody has. Like,
- 1:20:17Speaker 2: I always tell people, find the thing that you're good
- 1:20:19Speaker 2: at that, like, not everybody else can do. There's a
- 1:20:22Speaker 2: lot of things I cannot do that I have friends
- 1:20:23Speaker 2: that are very good at. And I'm like, please pursue
- 1:20:25Speaker 2: interior design. Please pursue, like, your cooking.
- 1:20:27Speaker 4: You're so good at it.
- 1:20:28Speaker 2: Yeah, like, you're so good at it. And it's so
- 1:20:30Speaker 2: not me, you know? And so I'm like, I was like,
- 1:20:33Speaker 2: it is like a, F you to God if you
- 1:20:36Speaker 2: don't use the gift that you know was blessed upon
- 1:20:40Speaker 2: you that not everybody can do. And like, it could
- 1:20:42Speaker 2: be amazing. And the other thing, which I've told the
- 1:20:45Speaker 2: story on this show to so many times, but I'm
- 1:20:47Speaker 2: just going to say quickly, when I was like 10,
- 1:20:50Speaker 2: I was watching like a call-in show and it was,
- 1:20:54Speaker 2: someone called in and Eddie Murphy was a guest. And
- 1:20:56Speaker 2: this woman said, I just, if I knew if I
- 1:21:00Speaker 2: ever had a chance to talk to you, I have
- 1:21:01Speaker 2: to tell you this, you know, so many years ago,
- 1:21:04Speaker 2: My son died. Like it was like a young child
- 1:21:07Speaker 2: and it was the worst day of my life. And
- 1:21:08Speaker 2: I said, I will never laugh again. And that night
- 1:21:11Speaker 2: I turned on SNL and you were Gumby and I
- 1:21:14Speaker 2: laughed again. And I remember at 10 going, that's what
- 1:21:16Speaker 2: I want to do. That's what I want to do.
- 1:21:19Speaker 2: I'm like, if I could do, if I could make
- 1:21:21Speaker 2: someone laugh on their hardest day and be an escape,
- 1:21:26Speaker 2: I just want to be an escape for an hour,
- 1:21:28Speaker 2: hour and a half, whatever it is. And I'm like,
- 1:21:30Speaker 2: I think when your intentions are pure like that, Then
- 1:21:34Speaker 2: the success will come. Some will be making $ 100 million
- 1:21:38Speaker 2: and some will just be very happy in their house,
- 1:21:41Speaker 2: but they still get to be creative. But if you
- 1:21:44Speaker 2: do it for the right reasons, you know.
- 1:21:46Speaker 4: If you are like, look at everything, whoever put this
- 1:21:50Speaker 4: together is, I believe, doing God's work. I love Starbucks.
- 1:21:56Speaker 4: These people are evil, obviously.
- 1:21:58Speaker 2: Somebody cared.
- 1:22:01Speaker 4: He wasn't like the person who grew these beans all
- 1:22:04Speaker 4: the way in wherever they come from. That guy wakes
- 1:22:07Speaker 4: up with the same intention that we do. He doesn't like,
- 1:22:11Speaker 4: I hope I make money. I hope I, but I
- 1:22:14Speaker 4: was born to figure out how the best way to
- 1:22:17Speaker 4: plant these beans and to grow them into, and he
- 1:22:20Speaker 4: sees everybody here. commercially enjoying what God gave him the
- 1:22:25Speaker 4: ability to do that.
- 1:22:25Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:22:26Speaker 4: I think that's everything of that camera. I think that's
- 1:22:28Speaker 4: the road that you drove on over here.
- 1:22:29Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:22:30Speaker 4: The guy was like, I'm obsessed with this mixture of
- 1:22:32Speaker 4: cement and asphalt that I could put together so people
- 1:22:36Speaker 4: can drive on these roads. Christianity aside, I feel like
- 1:22:41Speaker 4: more people listening to this podcast can get about the
- 1:22:43Speaker 4: business of doing the reason why God put them on
- 1:22:47Speaker 4: this planet.
- 1:22:48Speaker 2: Well, before we end, I want to say I love.
- 1:22:50Speaker 4: We're going to ask everybody to get saved now. I
- 1:22:52Speaker 4: feel like that was too much. I don't care. That
- 1:22:54Speaker 4: was too much. That was too much.
- 1:22:55Speaker 2: The other thing that's happened in the last few years
- 1:22:57Speaker 2: for me positively is that I was way more conscious
- 1:23:01Speaker 2: about saying the wrong thing and being caught saying the
- 1:23:04Speaker 2: wrong thing and all that. And I do feel like
- 1:23:06Speaker 2: now I'm like, fuck it. Who cares? Go listen to
- 1:23:08Speaker 2: someone else then. I'm sorry. This is me. You may
- 1:23:11Speaker 2: not like every episode. You may not like every guest.
- 1:23:14Speaker 2: I'm going to be me. You not. You choosing to— unsubscribe.
- 1:23:18Speaker 2: I'm not going to lose my home. Like I'm not,
- 1:23:20Speaker 2: it's not going to change my lifestyle. My dad always
- 1:23:22Speaker 2: used to say that too. If I lose this client,
- 1:23:24Speaker 2: it's not going to change my lifestyle. If I don't
- 1:23:25Speaker 2: do this gig, like it's, it's okay. So like, you know,
- 1:23:29Speaker 2: at this point I do think, thank God the pendulum
- 1:23:31Speaker 2: is swinging where people are a little bit able to breathe.
- 1:23:34Speaker 4: But not if you're on the networks.
- 1:23:35Speaker 3: Right.
- 1:23:36Speaker 4: If you've got a reoccurring on a network sitcom and
- 1:23:40Speaker 4: you put out a tweet, They will write you out
- 1:23:43Speaker 4: of that show.
- 1:23:43Speaker 2: Right, because the morality clause of the contracts and things
- 1:23:46Speaker 2: like that, they can say that.
- 1:23:47Speaker 4: Actually, I know a person that it has happened to
- 1:23:50Speaker 4: this year.
- 1:23:51Speaker 2: They were cast in a show?
- 1:23:52Speaker 4: They were in a show where an article came out
- 1:23:55Speaker 4: about them that the network did not like, and they
- 1:23:59Speaker 4: wrote them out.
- 1:23:59Speaker 1: Of the show.
- 1:23:59Speaker 2: And it was just politically incorrect?
- 1:24:01Speaker 5: Yes.
- 1:24:02Speaker 2: Not hateful?
- 1:24:03Speaker 4: No, it just was not on the side that they were.
- 1:24:07Speaker 2: Got it.
- 1:24:07Speaker 4: And they go, well, but now, like, you look at,
- 1:24:10Speaker 4: rogan you look at what's the guy that uh you
- 1:24:12Speaker 4: i'm sure you talked about it that was uh he
- 1:24:16Speaker 4: was locking the doors from the inside and he was
- 1:24:18Speaker 4: hooking up with all the girls at the morning show.
- 1:24:20Speaker 3: The cb oh matt lauer yeah yeah you're done yeah
- 1:24:23Speaker 3: because you're with cbs right and now he didn't he
- 1:24:27Speaker 3: never had his own audience yeah like rogan has his
- 1:24:30Speaker 3: own right so you can't.
- 1:24:33Speaker 2: Right It's amazing. It's the greatest.
- 1:24:35Speaker 4: It truly, and all the complaints that we all in
- 1:24:37Speaker 4: the 80s and 90s and early 2000s, you're like, well,
- 1:24:40Speaker 4: we made our own show.
- 1:24:42Speaker 2: Yeah. So I want to talk about this show. I
- 1:24:44Speaker 2: love this. It's filmed like The Office or Parks and Rec.
- 1:24:50Speaker 2: And tell me a little bit how you thought of
- 1:24:52Speaker 2: it and how you executed it and everything.
- 1:24:54Speaker 4: Well, it's called Springfield First. So it's basically my father-in-law
- 1:25:01Speaker 4: has passed down the church to me. So I'm this young,
- 1:25:04Speaker 4: trendy kind of pastor, and it's always– if you have
- 1:25:08Speaker 4: a church of 5,000 people, there are very human scenarios
- 1:25:15Speaker 4: that are going on.
- 1:25:16Speaker 2: Drama. Yeah.
- 1:25:17Speaker 4: There has to be. My dad was a pastor, and
- 1:25:19Speaker 4: I've worked at churches, so I know how it goes.
- 1:25:22Speaker 4: I know all this. They're like, this guy's nuts in
- 1:25:26Speaker 4: the church, but he tithes a lot of money.
- 1:25:29Speaker 2: And that means he gives a lot of money.
- 1:25:30Speaker 4: Yeah, that means he gives a lot of money. So
- 1:25:31Speaker 4: let's– hear them out right or there's a lot of
- 1:25:35Speaker 4: human things going on at a church yeah catholic church
- 1:25:38Speaker 4: too that you.
- 1:25:38Speaker 2: Go but they the thing about the catholic church like
- 1:25:40Speaker 2: i said like if i don't if i didn't go
- 1:25:42Speaker 2: like they're not calling me up and being like where
- 1:25:44Speaker 2: are you they're not knocking on the door that's the
- 1:25:46Speaker 2: thing where i'm like that's i wish the catholics would
- 1:25:48Speaker 2: take some marketing classes there needs to be.
- 1:25:50Speaker 4: A middle between the evangelicals and the catholics like catholics
- 1:25:53Speaker 4: don't care if you're there.
- 1:25:54Speaker 2: No they don't care you're not special you're not special
- 1:25:57Speaker 2: yeah You know, it's like, you know, whatever.
- 1:25:59Speaker 4: Evangelical everybody's too special.
- 1:26:01Speaker 2: And if you do a lot, you still can't reserve
- 1:26:03Speaker 2: a seat on Christmas Eve. You could give $ 100, 000.
- 1:26:07Speaker 4: You could be singing in the choir. That's why people
- 1:26:10Speaker 4: like Catholicism now.
- 1:26:10Speaker 2: And if you can't find a parking spot, you're screwed.
- 1:26:13Speaker 4: It doesn't matter.
- 1:26:13Speaker 2: You're standing in the back with your heels in the cold.
- 1:26:15Speaker 4: Gosh.
- 1:26:16Speaker 2: You can't buy a seat.
- 1:26:17Speaker 4: And in this evangelical scenario, like one of the— we have
- 1:26:23Speaker 4: a Greek team. Like every evangelical church would have a
- 1:26:26Speaker 4: greet team, meaning you walk in, there's a, hey, how
- 1:26:29Speaker 4: you doing? Good to see you. And we did like
- 1:26:32Speaker 4: a review of the headshots of like, it's Easter. We
- 1:26:35Speaker 4: got to get the hottest. Greeters.
- 1:26:38Speaker 2: I love it.
- 1:26:38Speaker 4: And everybody in the DMs, by the way, is like,
- 1:26:41Speaker 4: this is my church. Like this happens.
- 1:26:44Speaker 2: I mean, this is also sorority life. It's like putting
- 1:26:47Speaker 2: the cutest girls in front to do the sexy dance.
- 1:26:51Speaker 4: But think about that conversation.
- 1:26:53Speaker 2: Yes.
- 1:26:53Speaker 4: You're like, okay. But it's God, too. How much does
- 1:26:56Speaker 4: she weigh? Or like, well, she's a little bit hotter.
- 1:26:58Speaker 4: She gets more likes on her Instagram. Let's put her
- 1:27:00Speaker 4: up front. It's like.
- 1:27:01Speaker 2: We would be sitting back from communion, and my mom
- 1:27:04Speaker 2: would be like. My mom, who is a good woman,
- 1:27:07Speaker 2: but shallow. She'd be like, what happened to the O'Malley girl? Well,
- 1:27:13Speaker 2: they sent her off to the Midwest. And, I mean,
- 1:27:16Speaker 2: talk about the freshman 15. I think it's a freshman 15.
- 1:27:19Speaker 2: My gosh, I could barely walk. And I'm like, Mom,
- 1:27:22Speaker 2: we are in church.
- 1:27:22Speaker 4: Like, you literally just.
- 1:27:24Speaker 2: Got the body of Christ. I'm like, you are so—
- 1:27:28Speaker 2: But we would still go to church every Sunday.
- 1:27:29Speaker 4: Of course.
- 1:27:30Speaker 2: And we would be, like, literally judging people's outfits. And
- 1:27:32Speaker 2: I'm like, what?
- 1:27:32Speaker 4: Of course.
- 1:27:33Speaker 2: Okay, so when you thought— now, I'm guessing in your career—
- 1:27:37Speaker 2: As you're rising up, many people, network people, came to
- 1:27:40Speaker 2: you saying you should have a sitcom.
- 1:27:41Speaker 3: Sure, sure.
- 1:27:42Speaker 2: And this is what it should be. Was this ever
- 1:27:44Speaker 2: one of the ideas you had back before you decided
- 1:27:47Speaker 2: to do it yourself?
- 1:27:47Speaker 4: That's a thousand people. I've pitched this to a thousand people.
- 1:27:50Speaker 2: And how far did it go?
- 1:27:51Speaker 4: They shut it down every time.
- 1:27:52Speaker 2: Did you ever get to the point where you wrote
- 1:27:54Speaker 2: the pilot but not acted out?
- 1:27:57Speaker 4: Yeah, we wrote and filmed the pilot. Which network? No,
- 1:28:00Speaker 4: it– We pitched it to everybody, ESPN– not ESPN, Netflix, CBS,
- 1:28:06Speaker 4: Amazon Prime, all of them.
- 1:28:08Speaker 2: But it never got to the point. And so then
- 1:28:11Speaker 2: what made you go, actually, I'm at a point where
- 1:28:13Speaker 2: I'd like to finance it myself and film it myself
- 1:28:16Speaker 2: and how does that work?
- 1:28:16Speaker 4: It's really not– I mean just between us. It's not
- 1:28:19Speaker 4: between us, I guess. But it's just a– it's a WeWork.
- 1:28:24Speaker 2: Oh, you went to a WeWork.
- 1:28:26Speaker 4: That's what that office is.
- 1:28:27Speaker 2: That's the set.
- 1:28:28Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:28:29Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:28:29Speaker 2: Okay.
- 1:28:29Speaker 4: It's an office. I mean, the outside of the church
- 1:28:33Speaker 4: is AI.
- 1:28:33Speaker 2: Right, right.
- 1:28:34Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:28:36Speaker 4: And we have a camera. We have all the stuff.
- 1:28:38Speaker 2: And how long are each of the things?
- 1:28:40Speaker 4: A couple minutes.
- 1:28:41Speaker 2: Okay.
- 1:28:42Speaker 4: It could be two. It could be five. Just a
- 1:28:44Speaker 4: simple scenario.
- 1:28:44Speaker 2: And I know it's on your Instagram, but is it
- 1:28:48Speaker 2: also on YouTube where you can watch it all at once? Yeah. No. No.
- 1:28:52Speaker 4: It's not there. They just released daily or released twice
- 1:28:54Speaker 4: a week.
- 1:28:54Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:28:54Speaker 4: It's a Springfield first is what it's like.
- 1:28:56Speaker 2: And then did you finance it all yourself or you
- 1:28:58Speaker 2: got investors?
- 1:28:59Speaker 4: I just financed it myself because.
- 1:29:01Speaker 2: And has anyone now come and said, we think this can.
- 1:29:03Speaker 4: Be a bigger show. And I go, I tried to
- 1:29:06Speaker 4: pitch this deal like for years. I wish the same
- 1:29:10Speaker 4: thing with you.
- 1:29:10Speaker 2: But people are ahead of their time sometimes. Sometimes you're
- 1:29:12Speaker 2: just ahead of your time.
- 1:29:13Speaker 4: Same with you.
- 1:29:14Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:29:14Speaker 4: That you go, God, I'm so glad they didn't, they
- 1:29:17Speaker 4: turned it down. Yeah. Cause now like we did a, uh,
- 1:29:21Speaker 4: we had a joke in that somebody getting towed from the, okay.
- 1:29:24Speaker 2: Oh, I loved that.
- 1:29:25Speaker 4: That was such a, the, uh, no Kings rally. And
- 1:29:29Speaker 4: I go, are they, which side of the no Kings
- 1:29:31Speaker 4: were they on? And, but I go, people were getting
- 1:29:33Speaker 4: towed from the church parking lot. And, but I go,
- 1:29:36Speaker 4: I don't care if you're going to a Chris Tomlin,
- 1:29:37Speaker 4: it's like a big Christian singer. I don't care if
- 1:29:39Speaker 4: you're going to a Chris Tomlin concert or a clan rally.
- 1:29:42Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:29:43Speaker 4: You can't park in our church parking lot, but look,
- 1:29:47Speaker 4: that'll be cut. The network could have cut that.
- 1:29:50Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:29:50Speaker 4: And anything we're talking about here, the network goes, hey,
- 1:29:52Speaker 4: we can't.
- 1:29:53Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:29:53Speaker 4: So you go, well, all right. Well, then everybody's just
- 1:29:55Speaker 4: doing it themselves.
- 1:29:56Speaker 2: Yeah, I actually, watching it, I thought, ooh, that's kind
- 1:29:58Speaker 2: of even edgy that he's saying this.
- 1:30:00Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:30:01Speaker 2: But I thought that was so true.
- 1:30:03Speaker 4: But edgy to who?
- 1:30:04Speaker 2: Because I'm watching it and it was really funny because
- 1:30:06Speaker 2: it was like, we're not really sure if they're for
- 1:30:09Speaker 2: the No Kings or they're going to protest the No Kings. Yeah.
- 1:30:12Speaker 2: It's all like, it was like, and it was so confusing,
- 1:30:14Speaker 2: but like so funny. And then you're like, just tell them.
- 1:30:17Speaker 4: Like, it takes like a very, very, all the most
- 1:30:20Speaker 4: touchy subjects, but doesn't take a side.
- 1:30:25Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:30:25Speaker 4: Like, uh, the next, the next episode is, uh, somebody comes,
- 1:30:30Speaker 4: you know, like what a Bible study is like a group. Yeah.
- 1:30:33Speaker 4: There's like, the church has like a hundred of them. Yeah.
- 1:30:36Speaker 4: If you join the church, you can choose which Bible
- 1:30:38Speaker 4: study we're going to do the book of Romans. We're a,
- 1:30:41Speaker 4: empty nesters Bible study, college Bible study. So somebody comes
- 1:30:44Speaker 4: and they say they want to have black Bible study.
- 1:30:46Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:30:47Speaker 5: And you go, Oh.
- 1:30:50Speaker 2: Man.
- 1:30:50Speaker 4: Uh, okay. Does, uh, like we can't allow that. Yeah.
- 1:30:55Speaker 4: Obviously the white people are going to be upset. They're like,
- 1:30:58Speaker 4: we don't have a white Bible study. We're like, we
- 1:30:59Speaker 4: got a NASCAR pickleball Bible study. We're like, all right,
- 1:31:02Speaker 4: we're trying to do it. And then I just, it's
- 1:31:04Speaker 4: like very, I go, well, they can't, what do they
- 1:31:06Speaker 4: want to call it? They go black Bible study. I go,
- 1:31:08Speaker 4: can we switch it to like, the Bible study cookout
- 1:31:12Speaker 4: or it's like insane. Like it, but it doesn't say
- 1:31:15Speaker 4: it doesn't take a side, which is what's brilliant about it.
- 1:31:18Speaker 4: But there's nobody in our ear to like tell us.
- 1:31:21Speaker 2: It was so funny. I, um, I was talking about
- 1:31:24Speaker 2: this like scandal, this cheating scandal on like a reality
- 1:31:27Speaker 2: show and under the video they said, well, you're missing
- 1:31:32Speaker 2: the point about what Sierra said in the AA community. Yeah.
- 1:31:37Speaker 2: And I go, AA. I'm like, is she Alcoholics Anonymous?
- 1:31:43Speaker 2: And they're like, no, it's African American. Now we know
- 1:31:47Speaker 2: that Heather's so clueless.
- 1:31:49Speaker 4: And I was like, well, I just see her as.
- 1:31:50Speaker 2: A beautiful girl. I go, I don't think he was
- 1:31:52Speaker 2: dating her or not dating her because of the color
- 1:31:55Speaker 2: of skin. I think she was hot and.
- 1:31:56Speaker 4: It didn't work out.
- 1:31:57Speaker 2: I was like, what? I'm like, I only know AA
- 1:32:00Speaker 2: as AA. Sorry. And then they're like, yeah, the haters
- 1:32:03Speaker 2: are like, we got her. Like there's like one person
- 1:32:06Speaker 2: in basement, like just trying to see you slip up
- 1:32:08Speaker 2: and you're like, I don't fucking care anymore.
- 1:32:10Speaker 4: Or like, you can't, you can't like, uh, I have
- 1:32:13Speaker 4: no boss for you to like, you know, if a
- 1:32:17Speaker 4: guy's like sending like inappropriate things, they can find his
- 1:32:20Speaker 4: boss and then send it to him and then he
- 1:32:22Speaker 4: gets fired.
- 1:32:23Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:32:23Speaker 4: Like, well, we don't, Yeah, what are you going to do?
- 1:32:25Speaker 4: That's what's weird about being canceled also too. You go, well,
- 1:32:28Speaker 4: he already, we already kind of tried to get him
- 1:32:33Speaker 4: and he's here or he's like, I don't know, what
- 1:32:35Speaker 4: do you want us to do?
- 1:32:36Speaker 2: I mean, that's the other thing is once you go
- 1:32:38Speaker 2: through that too, it's like, you know, you've already, you know,
- 1:32:42Speaker 2: done this once to me and if the Lord shows
- 1:32:45Speaker 2: it to me again, I will know how to react
- 1:32:47Speaker 2: even better. So go ahead and try.
- 1:32:49Speaker 4: It's not scary. I mean, it used to be so,
- 1:32:53Speaker 4: like when somebody first said something, critical about you it
- 1:32:57Speaker 4: was so terrifying oh yeah like especially publicly yeah they
- 1:33:01Speaker 4: were like hella mcdonald and you go oh my you're
- 1:33:03Speaker 4: like that's.
- 1:33:03Speaker 2: Not me yeah and now you're like i'm not gonna
- 1:33:08Speaker 2: waste my time defending no myself like i know who
- 1:33:11Speaker 2: i am and the people that listen and ben yeah
- 1:33:13Speaker 2: would they go to my show like i if i
- 1:33:15Speaker 2: lose someone whatever It's such a beautiful time. Yeah, it
- 1:33:19Speaker 2: really is good.
- 1:33:20Speaker 4: I don't even know if you call it Hollywood. It
- 1:33:21Speaker 4: is good. Not Hollywood, but you can go find, if
- 1:33:24Speaker 4: you are obsessed with rock climbing in South Dakota, there's
- 1:33:29Speaker 4: content for you.
- 1:33:31Speaker 2: Yeah, I love it.
- 1:33:31Speaker 4: There's an Instagram feed. There's probably a podcast. You don't
- 1:33:34Speaker 4: have to watch what everyone else has watched. Between me
- 1:33:38Speaker 4: and you, there's 10,000 Tonight Shows.
- 1:33:41Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:33:42Speaker 1: Totally.
- 1:33:42Speaker 4: And you can go watch the one you want.
- 1:33:44Speaker 2: The one that– because people don't want the view. Well,
- 1:33:46Speaker 2: they all have one view. But I'm saying at one
- 1:33:48Speaker 2: time there used to be let's have five people with
- 1:33:51Speaker 2: different points of view. Actually, no.
- 1:33:53Speaker 4: They're all being canceled.
- 1:33:54Speaker 2: I just want to hear like someone that I jive
- 1:33:56Speaker 2: with and I might disagree with them. But I still
- 1:33:59Speaker 2: know like deep down I like their personality and I
- 1:34:03Speaker 2: like– I think that they're a good person and whatever.
- 1:34:06Speaker 4: And you don't have to– I want to hear what
- 1:34:09Speaker 4: Heather McDonald has to say about the thing that happened
- 1:34:13Speaker 4: over the weekend.
- 1:34:14Speaker 2: Right, exactly. Well, this has been so fun, and I
- 1:34:18Speaker 2: have your dates here. You have this huge tour. Oh, God,
- 1:34:22Speaker 2: I did love the P.F. Changs.
- 1:34:24Speaker 4: Oh, yeah, right. You went there? Is they have that
- 1:34:26Speaker 4: in the Valley?
- 1:34:27Speaker 2: Go to his Instagram. Oh, yeah. And I remember he
- 1:34:30Speaker 2: does this really funny thing about P.F. Chang's, and it
- 1:34:32Speaker 2: was the fancier Chinese thing.
- 1:34:34Speaker 4: Oh, you saw it?
- 1:34:34Speaker 2: And there were cocktails. I remember the kids were little,
- 1:34:38Speaker 2: and we were not– we didn't have the iPads when
- 1:34:40Speaker 2: my kids were little. So we would just not really
- 1:34:43Speaker 2: bring them anywhere, and we would just– The kids or
- 1:34:46Speaker 2: the iPads? Yeah. We were like, you know, we're not
- 1:34:48Speaker 2: going to put them in a place where they misbehave.
- 1:34:50Speaker 2: So one day I decided I looked cute. I came
- 1:34:53Speaker 2: from an audition or something. And I was like, can
- 1:34:55Speaker 2: we go to P.F. Chang's? I think the boys can
- 1:34:57Speaker 2: handle it, you know. And my little one was like, whatever,
- 1:35:03Speaker 2: two and a half. And I thought he could handle it. Well,
- 1:35:05Speaker 2: remember those big booths and whatever? He managed to climb
- 1:35:08Speaker 2: over the booth, steal someone's like fortune cookie and run
- 1:35:12Speaker 2: out past this. And I was like– That's the horse. Yeah,
- 1:35:15Speaker 2: and my husband's like, really? Was it worth it to
- 1:35:18Speaker 2: go to P.F. Chang's tonight? I'm like, no, we've got
- 1:35:19Speaker 2: to wait like another two years.
- 1:35:20Speaker 4: No, we're not ready yet. Yeah, we're not ready. We
- 1:35:22Speaker 4: might be white trash.
- 1:35:23Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah. Too nice of a place.
- 1:35:25Speaker 4: Yeah, too nice. P.F. Chang's was– the suburbs of America
- 1:35:28Speaker 4: was– Change the game.
- 1:35:30Speaker 2: When I saw this, the horse, my God, so funny.
- 1:35:33Speaker 2: But here are your dates. You're everywhere. Oh, dang. And
- 1:35:37Speaker 2: right now, this weekend, you're out here and then coming
- 1:35:41Speaker 2: in May, you're in Texas, North Carolina.
- 1:35:44Speaker 4: Oh, we're going everywhere. Where are your viewers at in L.A.? Everywhere.
- 1:35:48Speaker 3: They're everywhere.
- 1:35:49Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:35:49Speaker 4: I mean, we're in the main— They're all these places.
- 1:35:52Speaker 2: My best, you know, cities, states, whatever, are— L.A., San Diego,
- 1:35:59Speaker 2: New York, Chicago, Florida, Texas.
- 1:36:01Speaker 4: Beautiful.
- 1:36:03Speaker 2: Those are my– Philly, places like that, Washington, D.C., all that.
- 1:36:08Speaker 2: And then Nashville too. I mean obviously you're in the south,
- 1:36:11Speaker 2: which is amazing.
- 1:36:12Speaker 4: We pop around a pretty good bit.
- 1:36:14Speaker 2: So if you are not following you, I know that
- 1:36:18Speaker 2: you– everyone should because it's such funny content. You're such
- 1:36:21Speaker 2: a delight. Congrats on the engagement.
- 1:36:24Speaker 4: It was God's plan for me to not be on
- 1:36:26Speaker 4: your shows. So that we could have this killer moment.
- 1:36:28Speaker 4: So we could finally do the podcast. And you're welcome
- 1:36:31Speaker 4: to come on ours anytime you come to Nashville.
- 1:36:33Speaker 2: Such a delete. Well, I know I'm working on putting
- 1:36:36Speaker 2: my fall in 27 together. And I know we're definitely
- 1:36:39Speaker 2: going to do a Nashville show for sure.
- 1:36:43Speaker 4: Nashville is popular.
- 1:36:44Speaker 2: Yeah. And I've performed there before. It's been a couple years,
- 1:36:46Speaker 2: which is good, too. Then in a few years, people
- 1:36:48Speaker 2: are real thirsty for it. And it's, you know, there's
- 1:36:51Speaker 2: nothing cuter than Nashville.
- 1:36:53Speaker 4: Yeah. True story. You just have some white cowboy boots.
- 1:36:56Speaker 4: You'll fit right in.
- 1:36:57Speaker 2: Oh, I already have white cowboy boots that I will
- 1:36:59Speaker 2: be bringing up. Yeah, because I'm going to La Quinta
- 1:37:01Speaker 2: this weekend. I have a house there. And, you know,
- 1:37:03Speaker 2: for Coachella and Stagecoach, I was like, I think I
- 1:37:05Speaker 2: need to put the boots back in the house.
- 1:37:07Speaker 4: Oh, yeah. You got to. Oh, you're going to Coachella?
- 1:37:08Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:37:09Speaker 2: Well, I don't know if I'm going to go. I'm
- 1:37:10Speaker 2: hoping to go to some parties. And then, I mean,
- 1:37:12Speaker 2: it's a pretty young vibe. So I kind of like
- 1:37:15Speaker 2: to just enjoy and then go to like.
- 1:37:16Speaker 4: A party here and there.
- 1:37:17Speaker 2: Yeah, do an appearance.
- 1:37:18Speaker 4: You're not going to.
- 1:37:18Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm not going for the three days like my
- 1:37:20Speaker 2: 19-year-old niece.
- 1:37:21Speaker 4: Stay in a tent.
- 1:37:23Speaker 2: Yeah, no, I have a house.
- 1:37:24Speaker 6: Oh, yeah, I know.
- 1:37:25Speaker 4: We're not doing that.
- 1:37:25Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:37:26Speaker 2: Thank you so much, John.
- 1:37:27Speaker 4: It's an honor to be here.
- 1:37:28Speaker 5: Thank you.
- 1:37:28Speaker 2: Total delight. Thank you.
- 1:37:30Speaker 4: Absolutely.
- 1:37:31Speaker 2: Your website should get the tickets.
- 1:37:33Speaker 3: Shoot.
- 1:37:33Speaker 2: What's the best ticket so they don't get screwed over
- 1:37:36Speaker 2: and they have to go directly to you?
- 1:37:37Speaker 4: Tickets are $ 600. I go, no, they're not.
- 1:37:39Speaker 2: You have to go to what?
- 1:37:40Speaker 4: JohnChristComedy.com.
- 1:37:41Speaker 2: And that's C-R-I-S-T.
- 1:37:43Speaker 4: Yeah, like Christ, but with no H.
- 1:37:45Speaker 2: Exactly.
- 1:37:45Speaker 4: So easy.
- 1:37:46Speaker 2: And it's J-O-N.
- 1:37:47Speaker 4: J-O-H-N.
- 1:37:49Speaker 2: Oh, you are J-O-H-N.
- 1:37:49Speaker 4: There's an H in, but not in there. It's not
- 1:37:52Speaker 4: an H in the Christ. There's an H in the first,
- 1:37:54Speaker 4: not the last.
- 1:37:54Speaker 2: So John is J-O-H-N.
- 1:37:56Speaker 4: Yeah, C-R-I-S-T.
- 1:37:58Speaker 2: And then the H is gone in Christ.
- 1:38:00Speaker 4: Yeah, there you go.
- 1:38:00Speaker 2: And the Instagram, it's John B.
- 1:38:02Speaker 4: John B. Christ. You know my middle name?
- 1:38:04Speaker 2: Christ, Christ.
- 1:38:05Speaker 4: My middle name is Barack.
- 1:38:07Speaker 2: No way.
- 1:38:08Speaker 4: Yeah. He's a character in the Bible. He's a name
- 1:38:11Speaker 4: in the Bible.
- 1:38:11Speaker 2: Oh, interesting.
- 1:38:12Speaker 4: Yeah, my parents are very Republican.
- 1:38:15Speaker 2: That's crazy.
- 1:38:16Speaker 4: It's so fun. Yeah, they're like, you named after her.
- 1:38:18Speaker 4: I go, wow, I'm 40. I'm 42. I couldn't be
- 1:38:20Speaker 4: named after Barack Obama.
- 1:38:20Speaker 2: That's amazing.
- 1:38:21Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:38:22Speaker 2: So interesting. Thank you.
- 1:38:24Speaker 4: Honored to be here.
