- 0:08SPEAKER_00: Well, hello and welcome back to the High Dive.
- 0:11SPEAKER_00: So glad that you're diving in with me today.
- 0:14SPEAKER_00: Thank you for joining us on the High Dive Podcast.
- 0:17SPEAKER_00: We are a podcast of Calvary Baptist Church in Columbus, Georgia.
- 0:21SPEAKER_00: And the goal and the intent of this podcast is to go deeper into what we looked at this past Sunday and kind of spur one another on in our pursuit of Jesus through intentional relationships, just to find different ways to understand, make connections in scripture, and apply what we talked about.
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: So in our Psalms of Summer series, if you were with us this past Sunday, you heard a message from Psalm 110, and we really emphasized verse 1.
- 0:51SPEAKER_00: And if you weren't here, it's okay.
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: It's not that it's critically important that you have uh heard that sermon in order to benefit from this conversation.
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: But I will just kind of in a nutshell describe Psalm 110 is David, King David, writing this psalm, and he's looking forward in time with perspective to the Messiah, that one is greater than me, that is not my son.
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: He is actually both the root and the descendant of the promise.
- 1:23SPEAKER_00: And so it's a beautiful reminder, truthfully, as we said, Psalm 110, verse 1 is the most quoted Old Testament verse in the New Testament.
- 1:36SPEAKER_00: Absolutely fascinating.
- 1:37SPEAKER_00: So uh if you want to explore that more, go listen to the sermon on our church website, on our YouTube channel, on our Facebook, uh social media, you can check it out.
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: But what I wanted to do today is prayerfully not ramble, but I certainly also I don't intend to re-preach the sermon, but uh I I wanna I want to sit in this chair and have this conversation.
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: I've got some notes in front of me, so if you see me uh looking down, I'm looking at my notes, and I just want to think out loud with you about what it actually costs, what it actually gives you to live like Jesus, seated on a throne, and trusting that Jesus in his authority as Lord, priest, and king is not pacing around in fear, wondering what to do next.
- 2:33SPEAKER_00: Because here's the thing uh most of us would say, and we wouldn't even hesitate, yes, Jesus is Lord.
- 2:40SPEAKER_00: We wouldn't even blink, because it's a truthfully an easy sentence to say or a great lyric to sing.
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: But the hard part is doing an honest inventory of where in our life we actually don't believe that or we don't live like that.
- 3:01SPEAKER_00: So I want to think through that today and maybe take some of those ideas that we looked at in Psalm 110 of Jesus as Lord, Jesus is King, Jesus is priest, and maybe go some different places that we went on Sunday.
- 3:19SPEAKER_00: So let's start with the Lord.
- 3:24SPEAKER_00: Jesus is Lord.
- 3:26SPEAKER_00: And here's the question I've been thinking about.
- 3:28SPEAKER_00: Um, it's not necessarily, do I believe that Jesus is Lord, but more importantly, where in my life am I still holding back?
- 3:40SPEAKER_00: Uh think of it, think of it this way.
- 3:43SPEAKER_00: Uh the person who has the authority to write that check or to hold that pen, where am I just allowing Jesus to co-sign my decisions rather than trusting him to make the decisions?
- 3:57SPEAKER_00: Uh I think for a lot of us, and I'll be honest, I would go first.
- 4:01SPEAKER_00: It's usually not in the big dramatic sins and failures.
- 4:06SPEAKER_00: It's not like uh most of us are wrestling with what would be obvious rebellion.
- 4:12SPEAKER_00: It I think it's quieter than that.
- 4:14SPEAKER_00: It's it's more subtle than that.
- 4:16SPEAKER_00: Like I think it's it's in the calendar.
- 4:19SPEAKER_00: It's what we do with Tuesday night, what we do with our free time, like how we how we talk to our spouse when we're tired, like uh how how we react when people aren't around.
- 4:38SPEAKER_00: It's uh how I choose to spend my money or use my resources when nobody's gonna even ask me about it.
- 4:46SPEAKER_00: It really starts to get into this integrity idea.
- 4:52SPEAKER_00: In fact, Sunday in the sermon, I asked this question uh, is it your marriage?
- 4:58SPEAKER_00: Is it your finances?
- 4:59SPEAKER_00: Is it your parenting?
- 5:00SPEAKER_00: Is it your private habits?
- 5:02SPEAKER_00: And I want to just kind of push into one of those spaces, like maybe, maybe it is your ambition.
- 5:10SPEAKER_00: In fact, the way I said it Sunday was maybe it's in your need to be right.
- 5:16SPEAKER_00: Uh think about it this way: ambition doesn't necessarily feel like rebellion.
- 5:22SPEAKER_00: In fact, we argue that it is on being responsible.
- 5:26SPEAKER_00: It feels it feels good to be the provider, to be the the um overzealous employee, um the the the man who takes care of business, right?
- 5:39SPEAKER_00: But I think I think ambition can, using that word on purpose, it can quietly become the place where Jesus is a consultant rather than the one in charge.
- 5:53SPEAKER_00: Like maybe maybe you'll pray about a decision, but you've really already decided.
- 6:00SPEAKER_00: You're you're praying about a decision, not seeking direction.
- 6:04SPEAKER_00: You're actually seeking validation and affirmation to do what you want to do.
- 6:08SPEAKER_00: Like you're not actually saying uh, God, what do you want to do?
- 6:16SPEAKER_00: You're asking the Lord to bless what you've already decided to do.
- 6:20SPEAKER_00: Now, I I'm guilty of this myself.
- 6:23SPEAKER_00: I'm in no way trying to um shame anyone.
- 6:28SPEAKER_00: I think I think almost every one of us that has any sense of drive does this.
- 6:34SPEAKER_00: But uh here here's a question that I think is worth just sitting in for a little bit.
- 6:41SPEAKER_00: Um Is there a decision in front of you right now where you've actually already made up your mind and you're just waiting on God to get on board?
- 6:55SPEAKER_00: Um I I think I think that's a different question than am I actively living in sin?
- 7:02SPEAKER_00: I think that it's possible that you can ask that question and walk away feeling like, yeah, I passed the test.
- 7:12SPEAKER_00: But this question about ambition, specifically this question about is there a decision that I am uh thinking through that I've already made up my mind, I'm just waiting on God to get on board, that's a harder question to dodge.
- 7:30SPEAKER_00: Here's the other angle I want to think about when we think about Jesus as Lord.
- 7:34SPEAKER_00: Um, and I I think this is this is appropriate and applicable to anybody who has been following Jesus for a long time.
- 7:47SPEAKER_00: There is a version, I'm not saying it's right, I'm saying there is a version in our brain and in our application of following Jesus that is very comfortable, it's very domesticated.
- 8:04SPEAKER_00: Like we know the language, we know the posture, we know I can raise my hand and worship at the right time when the bridge hits, right?
- 8:16SPEAKER_00: Uh but maybe it's been a long time since Jesus really redirected you.
- 8:26SPEAKER_00: You've been kind of going through the motions.
- 8:28SPEAKER_00: Maybe it's been a while that your obedience to what the Lord tells you to do actually cost you something.
- 8:36SPEAKER_00: Um the test, think of it this way.
- 8:40SPEAKER_00: Uh I heard someone say this one time, I can't even give credit to the author, so I'll call it the author is anonymous.
- 8:50SPEAKER_00: The test of lordship, the test of is Jesus the Lord of your life, not whether you'll say yes to Jesus.
- 9:00SPEAKER_00: It's whether you said no to anything lately because Jesus told you to.
- 9:06SPEAKER_00: Think about that.
- 9:07SPEAKER_00: So I think this is just a practical application and exercise for you.
- 9:12SPEAKER_00: It's not a it's not a guilt trip.
- 9:14SPEAKER_00: I think it's an actual benefit and exercise of faith this week.
- 9:19SPEAKER_00: Uh, before maybe it's you're laying in the bed at night um praying before you go to sleep.
- 9:26SPEAKER_00: And now and maybe as you're reflecting on the day, ask yourself this question what is one thing I did today that I only did because Jesus is Lord?
- 9:39SPEAKER_00: And I wouldn't have done it my way.
- 9:42SPEAKER_00: If you can't think of anything, that I don't think that's condemnation.
- 9:46SPEAKER_00: That's just useful information.
- 9:48SPEAKER_00: Maybe that tells you where to start praying.
- 9:52SPEAKER_00: So reflect through is Jesus truly the Lord of my life?
- 9:56SPEAKER_00: So look, he's Lord, he's king, he's priest.
- 9:59SPEAKER_00: Let's let's kind of think through a little bit more about that.
- 10:02SPEAKER_00: Jesus is king.
- 10:04SPEAKER_00: So Sunday, if you'll remember, or you can go back and listen to the sermon, we looked at this already, but not yet.
- 10:12SPEAKER_00: He has already conquered death in the grave, but he's not yet has all of his enemies under his feet.
- 10:19SPEAKER_00: He he has already promised victory and he's already saved us and forgiven us, but there's plenty of evidence around our life that the enemy is at work.
- 10:29SPEAKER_00: Jesus already reigns, but we don't yet see everything finished.
- 10:38SPEAKER_00: Already not yet.
- 10:42SPEAKER_00: Most of us are living inside a not yet moment right now.
- 10:50SPEAKER_00: Maybe it's maybe it's a marriage that hasn't turned the corner yet.
- 10:55SPEAKER_00: Um maybe figuratively or literally you've got a child who is that prodigal son type character and they've not yet come home.
- 11:06SPEAKER_00: Maybe maybe you've received a heavy diagnosis and you're through a treatment plan, but there's no resolution, there's no peace.
- 11:17SPEAKER_00: Um maybe you've been praying the same big prayer for so long that you have actually stopped expecting an answer.
- 11:29SPEAKER_00: But you still pray the prayer because now it's just habit.
- 11:33SPEAKER_00: It has become part of your script every day.
- 11:36SPEAKER_00: The danger, not if but when we're in a not yet season, is not usually that you stop believing in God.
- 11:45SPEAKER_00: The danger is that you start believing He's slow or distracted, or maybe I've just slipped through the clap, the cracks in God's priorities.
- 11:57SPEAKER_00: Like you never say that out loud in a Bible study.
- 12:02SPEAKER_00: But if you're honest, the the posture of our heart can take that position toward God, maybe after months of waiting on something.
- 12:10SPEAKER_00: And here's here's what I want to offer you to consider.
- 12:14SPEAKER_00: It's this image of Jesus sitting on the throne as an active rather than passive image.
- 12:24SPEAKER_00: Uh, a king who's sitting isn't a king who's given up on you or forgotten you.
- 12:30SPEAKER_00: He is he's seating or sitting, use proper grammar.
- 12:35SPEAKER_00: He's sitting because the decisive work is already done.
- 12:38SPEAKER_00: And what's happening now is the outworking of victory that's already been secure by his death, burial, and resurrection.
- 12:46SPEAKER_00: So um I think that's it's similar, but it's a little different than just be patient.
- 12:53SPEAKER_00: Like patience is a virtue.
- 12:55SPEAKER_00: Patience by itself can feel like just grit your teeth or maybe even be in denial.
- 13:02SPEAKER_00: What I'm what I'm encouraging you to consider living out Jesus as king in this already and not yet is a little bit different.
- 13:10SPEAKER_00: This is the outcome isn't really in question.
- 13:16SPEAKER_00: The timeline is unresolved, but the outcome is sure.
- 13:20SPEAKER_00: That Jesus is his control, that he is going to work all things together for his good.
- 13:25SPEAKER_00: And I think that mindset, that posture, it changes how we pray even in a season of waiting.
- 13:33SPEAKER_00: Like instead of praying like we're trying to convince uh a reluctant God to finally act, like I'm just trying to find the secret key to get him to do what I want him to do.
- 13:48SPEAKER_00: Uh maybe our prayers start to sound like the prayers of a person that already knows how the story's gonna end, and you're asking him just to let you see it now instead of later.
- 14:01SPEAKER_00: Like I can endure the waiting with confidence in the outcome.
- 14:09SPEAKER_00: Let me maybe get a little more specific.
- 14:13SPEAKER_00: Uh because I honestly, let's just be real.
- 14:16SPEAKER_00: Like, vague hope, even confident hope, doesn't really help me at three in the morning when I can't sleep because my brine my brain or mind is spinning.
- 14:25SPEAKER_00: Am I the only one that does that?
- 14:27SPEAKER_00: Um if you're waiting on a wondering kid to come home, Jesus sitting at the throne doesn't mean God forgot your kid's name.
- 14:46SPEAKER_00: It means the same king who's going to make every enemy be his footstool is fully capable of pursuing that wandering heart.
- 15:00SPEAKER_00: And the timeline, even the doubting is not evidence that he stopped.
- 15:08SPEAKER_00: Maybe maybe you're waiting on a marriage to heal.
- 15:12SPEAKER_00: Uh trusting that Jesus is in control as the seated king doesn't mean I pretend everything's fine.
- 15:23SPEAKER_00: It doesn't mean I'm in denial.
- 15:26SPEAKER_00: It means that you can do the hard, slow work of reconciliation without the desperation of feeling like you're the only one holding it together because you're not.
- 15:39SPEAKER_00: He's not wringing his hands at this.
- 15:42SPEAKER_00: Uh he is also active.
- 15:46SPEAKER_00: So here's the question for you.
- 15:48SPEAKER_00: I mean, we could go through all the scenarios.
- 15:50SPEAKER_00: Maybe it's the wandering kid, it's the the struggles with the coworker, it's the marriage on the rocks, it's the diagnosis.
- 15:58SPEAKER_00: Here's the question Where is the one place in your life where you've quietly started treating the not yet like it means it's not going to happen?
- 16:15SPEAKER_00: Because those are two very different things.
- 16:18SPEAKER_00: I can have the posture of the not yet and have the hope in the already, but if the not yet has turned into it's never gonna happen, I think that's where a lot of our despair comes and just starts to collapse.
- 16:37SPEAKER_00: I hope you find some encouragement in that.
- 16:39SPEAKER_00: Because I I I know that's heavy.
- 16:42SPEAKER_00: He's Lord, he's king, he's priest.
- 16:46SPEAKER_00: This is the last section that we looked at in the sermon that I want to think through a different way.
- 16:51SPEAKER_00: Uh, because Sunday we we kind of kept hitting back at this refreshing reminder that Jesus intercedes for us.
- 16:59SPEAKER_00: Um like we even said, like when your conscience condemns you, Jesus intercedes, or when you feel like your prayers are weak, like they hit the ceiling and fall back down, he intercedes for for you.
- 17:12SPEAKER_00: And the the struggle to rest in that oftentimes can produce shame in our heart.
- 17:21SPEAKER_00: Uh, and I think shame is the thing, it's definitely one of the things that keeps people out of an honest relationship with Jesus?
- 17:33SPEAKER_00: Shame probably more than doubt, truthfully, because people don't usually walk away from God because they have theological questions.
- 17:41SPEAKER_00: They walk away or they hide because they think God, if God really saw this whole story, he'd want nothing to do with them.
- 17:49SPEAKER_00: Like, how could a God, you may hear that said this way, how could a God who usually is loving and forgiving love me because I know all the things I've done?
- 17:59SPEAKER_00: And here's the thing that's easy to say and and really hard to let it sink into your bones.
- 18:05SPEAKER_00: I said this Sunday, Jesus already knows the whole story and he still loves you.
- 18:10SPEAKER_00: Jesus already knows the whole story, he still died for you.
- 18:13SPEAKER_00: Jesus already knew the whole story before you were born.
- 18:18SPEAKER_00: Uh, not the version of your story that you would post on social media or not the version of your story that you would vulnerably open up uh in a in a small group or a life group.
- 18:29SPEAKER_00: I'm talking about the thoughts that you've never said out loud.
- 18:34SPEAKER_00: I I'm talking about the thing from ten years ago that you never told anyone.
- 18:38SPEAKER_00: I'm talking about that that pattern of behavior that you're ashamed of that just keeps recycling your life and you're embarrassed.
- 18:51SPEAKER_00: He already knows that.
- 18:54SPEAKER_00: He already knows that part of your story, and he is interceding for you.
- 19:00SPEAKER_00: And I think that reminder is refreshing and it's worth sitting in because I think a lot of us we live as if uh there is like an installment plan with God.
- 19:14SPEAKER_00: Like we're managing what he knows about us and we're keeping the worst parts in reserve, and maybe I'll open up that deep crevice to our heart at a time where I think he's ready to receive it, and he already knows it.
- 19:27SPEAKER_00: And there's no risk in being vulnerably honest and resting in him.
- 19:31SPEAKER_00: And I think uh the whole point of a permanent priest, one who doesn't need to make repeated sacrifice, is because he's already finished the work and there's no version of you that surprises him at all.
- 19:47SPEAKER_00: Like there is there is God in his infinite love and grace has extended an invitation for rest, peace, hope, and freedom.
- 19:59SPEAKER_00: There's no new information he's gonna learn about you that's gonna call him to take that offer back.
- 20:06SPEAKER_00: It's freely given, so freely receive.
- 20:09SPEAKER_00: So here's a practical question, and this may be the most important reflective question of this whole episode.
- 20:20SPEAKER_00: Is there something in your life that you've been managing rather than confessing?
- 20:27SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna say that again.
- 20:29SPEAKER_00: Is there something in your life that you've been managing rather than confessing?
- 20:34SPEAKER_00: Something something that you've been trying to control rather than bringing it to light.
- 20:42SPEAKER_00: Uh not to not to me, uh, but to God, not necessarily to a trusted friend, but to Jesus.
- 20:55SPEAKER_00: I mean, I think shame convinces us that hiding is safer than being honest.
- 21:07SPEAKER_00: And the gospel says the opposite.
- 21:10SPEAKER_00: Being being fully known by the Lord, by a king, by a priest who already died for the whole story is the safest place that you can be.
- 21:24SPEAKER_00: So we kind of reflected back with uh in an effort not to re-preach the sermon, but to circle back around to those ideas of Jesus as Lord, as King, and as priest.
- 21:36SPEAKER_00: And so uh I want to kind of land this conversation with three postures that came out of Sunday's sermon.
- 21:46SPEAKER_00: We talked about the importance of bowing and resting and going with hope.
- 21:52SPEAKER_00: And I want to give you maybe maybe an action step for each one of those that you can actually do this week and not just.
- 22:00SPEAKER_00: To think or feel.
- 22:02SPEAKER_00: Bow.
- 22:02SPEAKER_00: Let's talk about bowing.
- 22:05SPEAKER_00: What if you were to name one specific area out loud?
- 22:10SPEAKER_00: Maybe it's as you're driving in the car and you're by yourself.
- 22:14SPEAKER_00: Turn the radio off, turn the podcast off.
- 22:17SPEAKER_00: And just say out loud where you've been treating Jesus like an advisor rather than as your Lord.
- 22:24SPEAKER_00: And don't just think it, say it.
- 22:27SPEAKER_00: Because you say it, you'll hear yourself say it.
- 22:30SPEAKER_00: And there's something, there's something powerful about actually voicing it that moves it from a vague feeling into a real decision point.
- 22:42SPEAKER_00: So as a way to demonstrate a posture of bowing, would you consider voicing that this week?
- 22:48SPEAKER_00: Resting.
- 22:52SPEAKER_00: Think through one situation that you're carrying and change one sentence in how you pray.
- 23:02SPEAKER_00: Instead of praying, God, please fix this.
- 23:06SPEAKER_00: Instead consider praying, God, you're already seated in authority over this.
- 23:14SPEAKER_00: So let me see you in this.
- 23:20SPEAKER_00: It's a very small shift, but it's a very different posture.
- 23:25SPEAKER_00: Consider praying that today.
- 23:28SPEAKER_00: And then out of that hope we can go in action.
- 23:31SPEAKER_00: So maybe this week you can be the person that tells someone that Jesus is not pacing over what their crisis is.
- 23:41SPEAKER_00: Maybe somebody in your life where you live, work, learn, and play is in this waiting season, and they think that God has forgotten them, and your encouragement and your presence can be that hope for them.
- 23:55SPEAKER_00: And you here's the beauty of it.
- 23:56SPEAKER_00: You don't need a theology degree, you don't need to have mastered scripture, you don't need to have all of your ducks in a row to be able to be that presence of hope in their life to point them to Jesus.
- 24:11SPEAKER_00: Because here's what I come back with or back to as I reflect on what we studied through Psalm 110 this week.
- 24:22SPEAKER_00: A lot of our exhaustion spiritually isn't because we don't know enough true things about God.
- 24:37SPEAKER_00: Chances are we already know enough Bible.
- 24:42SPEAKER_00: But maybe it's because we're carrying a weight that already belongs to King Jesus who is seated.
- 24:53SPEAKER_00: Maybe we are pacing on his behalf, like we're carrying the anxiety and the nerves.
- 24:58SPEAKER_00: And he's like, slow down.
- 25:00SPEAKER_00: Like what if we're trying to manage an outcome that he has already secured?
- 25:07SPEAKER_00: Um what if we're hiding stories that he already knows and he's already forgiven us of?
- 25:14SPEAKER_00: Again, shift in our thinking.
- 25:17SPEAKER_00: Um Jesus isn't waiting to become the king, he already is.
- 25:22SPEAKER_00: He's not waiting to become the priest, he's already actively serving in that way.
- 25:27SPEAKER_00: He's not waiting to become the Lord, he already is.
- 25:31SPEAKER_00: And the invitation this week is not to try harder.
- 25:36SPEAKER_00: The invitation this week is to actually believe what's already true and let my thoughts and intentions and ambitions to be shaped by it.
- 25:50SPEAKER_00: You know, those are some thoughts that I pray you find encouraging and thought provoking.
- 25:55SPEAKER_00: And that's this episode of the high dive this week, as we reflect back on Psalm 110.
- 26:00SPEAKER_00: I hope you are blessed and encouraged by it, as we always say.
- 26:03SPEAKER_00: Please click like, subscribe, leave a review, five stars, please.

- 26:22SPEAKER_00: We'll see you next time.
- 26:24SPEAKER_00: Bye.
