- 0:57Welcome, welcome, welcome to the final and the last Wisdom Wednesdays with Wendy.
- 1:05I am so sad that this is coming to an end, but I have enjoyed these conversations so much.
- 1:11And Wendy, you're going to start us off with a quote today.
- 1:14I am because we are talking about surrender today.
- 1:19And I was reminded of a quote by Joseph Campbell, which I think is so powerful.
- 1:24And he said, we must be willing to let go of the life we planned
- 1:29so as to have the life that is waiting for us.
- 1:36You know, and I'm just going to jump straight into this here,
- 1:40because we've been building something.
- 1:43We've been building a podcast network.
- 1:45And I've been talking a lot to people about kind of doing before you're ready.
- 1:51And real is always so different from how we imagined it.
- 1:57But it's always so much better too.
- 1:59And I mean, in everything, not just in business, not just in projects.
- 2:02But when we imagine something, I don't think we can get the complexity that realness has.
- 2:11You know, when you imagine a perfect relationship,
- 2:13or you imagine your perfect home, or you imagine your perfect job,
- 2:16it's always kind of two-dimensional, even when it's perfect.
- 2:20You know, whereas reality, even though it comes with,
- 2:25you know, little failures and bits and bobs here and there,
- 2:28it's always so much better.
- 2:30And I don't just mean because it's real.
- 2:33I mean, it's better because it's more textured.
- 2:35It's more full.
- 2:36It's more, it's got more depth.
- 2:39You know what I mean?
- 2:40Yes, I do know what you mean.
- 2:42And something else that's popping into my mind right now
- 2:45is the difference between AI, naked, and us showing up as ourselves, right?
- 2:52So AI can perhaps give us a perfected idea of something.
- 3:00But if it doesn't have our heart and soul, then it has no impact.
- 3:06So being real is actually what has the impact
- 3:10because real people respond to that.
- 3:14You can't have empathy with something that doesn't have emotions, you know?
- 3:19And you can't facsimilate, facsimilate?
- 3:24Does that work?
- 3:24You can't replicate emotions.
- 3:27You can pretend, you can try, but it never works, you know?
- 3:31No.
- 3:32And that's the kind of difference between just letting yourself be
- 3:37and trying to show something.
- 3:40When I was in acting training, there was always this kind of,
- 3:43you know, you can tell the people who work from the outside in
- 3:46because they're trying to build something from observation.
- 3:49And it's always too general.
- 3:52It's always like really stereotypical.
- 3:54It's always kind of two-dimensional
- 3:56because human beings are so complex.
- 3:59It's impossible to replicate human behavior
- 4:03because we're so chaotic and we're so unpredictable
- 4:05and we're so weird that it is impossible.
- 4:10Yeah, yeah, exactly.
- 4:13And when I think about how everything is energy,
- 4:18that's what I believe, that it takes energy to connect with energy.
- 4:24And in a way, when I think about surrender,
- 4:28it's not that it's a release of energy,
- 4:32but it is more inviting a greater energy.
- 4:36I'm reminded of how I used to believe
- 4:39that what surrender meant was the white flag.
- 4:44The white flag.
- 4:45Oh, like submission.
- 4:47Yeah, sort of like not just surrender,
- 4:50but giving up like we're done, like, you know, you win.
- 4:55Whereas I have a new meaning of surrender
- 4:58or certainly a new sense of surrender,
- 5:01which is where it's a win-win, not a win-lose.
- 5:05And it takes, surrender, I believe,
- 5:10takes going within to remember the truth of who we are
- 5:17and open to sort of what the next phase,
- 5:21the next chapter, the next step is.
- 5:24Yeah, well, I think it's kind of the opposite of control, right?
- 5:27Because control is like you're fighting your circumstances
- 5:31to try and create something else.
- 5:33I don't think of surrender as giving up or giving in.
- 5:35I think of it as going with the flow.
- 5:38You know, I'm not trying to fight anymore.
- 5:40I'm not building a dam, I'm building a raft
- 5:45and I'm gonna go down the river and see what happens.
- 5:48You know, hopefully I don't go in a waterfall.
- 5:51But I think of that like surrender is more about
- 5:54kind of going, okay, what is, is.
- 5:58And like radically accepting that
- 6:01and not saying that it's, not excusing things that aren't okay.
- 6:06But accepting that this is where we are.
- 6:09This is where I am in this moment.
- 6:11If I want to change it, I can change it.
- 6:13But I have to be where I am first.
- 6:17And then I can maybe find a path of least resistance to change
- 6:23because sometimes, you know, the combative isn't always the best way.
- 6:28Yeah, yeah, for sure.
- 6:31Exactly.
- 6:32Yeah, it's definitely not usually the best way
- 6:35because in combat or in combativeness,
- 6:40I know that for myself, I tend to retreat.
- 6:44I retreat back to where I felt most safe, which inside,
- 6:51which doesn't necessarily mean it's my highest self or my greatest self.
- 6:56Sometimes it's a protective self, you know.
- 6:59And yeah, it's, I agree with you that a true surrender,
- 7:10the way I'm hearing what you're saying is more of an opening.
- 7:17You know, when I think of spiritually speaking,
- 7:22I remember when I used to, and fill in the word God, spirit,
- 7:29whatever is right for you and anyone listening.
- 7:33But to surrender to that felt like I didn't have my own life anymore.
- 7:40That means I needed to listen to this voice that knows everything,
- 7:45is everywhere, and all that.
- 7:48And I'm just so grateful that we can grow and change, Danielle,
- 7:54and that we can look at what we have believed
- 7:58and certainly find our way to new beliefs,
- 8:02because I don't believe that about spiritually surrendering in that way anymore.
- 8:08Like, to me, I feel like my, you know, how can I put this?
- 8:15That I only know, really, truly know my past and my present,
- 8:24what I perceive about my present.
- 8:27But in surrender, if I believe that there is a higher intelligence, which I do,
- 8:35that I can be more informed.
- 8:38And then I'm at choice as to whether I'm ready,
- 8:44whether I want to, and I don't believe there's judgment either,
- 8:48or whether I move into it and see how it goes, you know.
- 8:56So, surrender is becoming a beautiful thing that I'm trusting more and more.
- 9:04Yeah, I don't think of myself as particularly spiritual,
- 9:08but I do kind of think of like ego versus, I don't know, like presence?
- 9:13Or just, you know, feeling more in tune and less self-conscious.
- 9:20And I do feel that in that kind of surrender state, my ego is less active.
- 9:27I'm less like, I'm trying to do this thing, you know.
- 9:32It's less that and more, it's almost like a flow state for me.
- 9:37And the more present I am, the more I feel like I'm surrendering
- 9:45to reality, you know.
- 9:47And it's not that I don't have agency.
- 9:49I feel like I have a lot of agency, but it's almost that kind of like,
- 9:55you know, that, you know, it's like a dance with what's going on.
- 10:02Instead of kind of going, you will do this, I will move this.
- 10:06It becomes, flow is the only word I've got.
- 10:09I'm afraid it's kind of overused.
- 10:11But I do feel very much that kind of, you know, everything is more fluid
- 10:16and there's enough time for everything.
- 10:19And you can dodge the things you need to dodge
- 10:21and you can do the things you want to do.
- 10:23And it's almost like time slows down and I get to be super present and super aware.
- 10:30And not aware so much of the past or the future,
- 10:33but just right now in this moment, I guess.
- 10:35Yeah.
- 10:38And for me, that's the more I, I think I confuse sometimes
- 10:44presence and surrender for myself.
- 10:47Oh, interesting.
- 10:49They are different things.
- 10:50Sometimes I think of them as the same thing.
- 10:53You know, Danielle, that's brilliant.
- 10:56You brilliant girl.
- 10:58You know, but seriously, the truth is,
- 11:02we do need to surrender to be present.
- 11:06We have to surrender what was before, what might be after.
- 11:11We do.
- 11:13I think that's brilliant what you just said.
- 11:16What we decided was going to happen.
- 11:18What we played out in our heads beforehand.
- 11:20What we want so and so to feel or think or say.
- 11:24And I think that's, that's also, it's a wonderful way to be
- 11:30and like in relationship as well.
- 11:31Because instead of making a decision about how someone else is feeling
- 11:36or what, what they're saying means before,
- 11:39before you even start the argument, you get to be more present
- 11:43and really listen and really kind of deal with what's actually there.
- 11:49Which is not the same as not attachments, but they're all kind of linked together.
- 11:55And I think, I think it's very important to not fight reality.
- 12:03Yeah, yeah, exactly.
- 12:06Yeah, yeah, it's true.
- 12:08So when you say reality, Danielle, are you saying what is,
- 12:14is that what you mean by reality?
- 12:16Yeah, that's what I mean by reality.
- 12:17I mean, like, if I'm, if I want something to be,
- 12:20if I want someone to feel a certain way and they don't,
- 12:22or if I want, I want it to be sunny and it's raining.
- 12:26And me getting upset about it isn't going to change anything.
- 12:31I'm not going to make the clouds part because I'm having a little temper tantrum.
- 12:39As much as I wish I could.
- 12:42Yeah, that's right.
- 12:44It's been done before.
- 12:47Nevermind.
- 12:51Yeah.
- 12:52Yeah, not, not the reality I've made in my head,
- 12:55not stories, but just kind of, you know, what is.
- 12:59Yeah, yeah, exactly.
- 13:02And you know, I, I know that, that I've spoken in my podcast before
- 13:07about being willing to question what we've believed up until now.
- 13:12So when you think of surrender in terms of podcasting, Danielle,
- 13:17do you have a thought about that?
- 13:22Well, it's that whole one take thing, right?
- 13:28That's a surrender.
- 13:29All right.
- 13:30It's just going to do it.
- 13:31You're just going to do everything in one take.
- 13:32And if I mess up, I mess up.
- 13:34And if I say the wrong thing, I say the wrong thing that,
- 13:36I mean, that is a form of surrender for sure.
- 13:40Allowing things to be imperfect.
- 13:42You know, I have my standards, my standards exist.
- 13:46I usually don't reach them.
- 13:48That's okay.
- 13:49Growing into them, you know, and yeah, that kind of surrendering to.
- 13:57Letting go, not really surrendering, but so much letting go of my.
- 14:04It is, it's my ego.
- 14:06You know, I want things to be a certain way.
- 14:07I want things to be perfect and they're not.
- 14:11And that's okay.
- 14:12In fact, imperfection is one of my values.
- 14:15So I do have this very funny little, little war going on inside of me because my ego wants
- 14:22everything to be perfect, but my values are like, imperfection is really important to you.
- 14:27I'm like, yeah, I know, but can I just be perfect and still value imperfection?
- 14:31And the answer is no, I can't.
- 14:36You know, Danielle, something that.
- 14:39I really appreciate and respect about you is.
- 14:44Again, sayings in my mind, just come and go.
- 14:47But this saying is shoot for the stars and you'll, you'll get to the moon, right?
- 14:55And that's what I see you doing.
- 14:57Like with the podcasting, you know, you're shooting for the stars and.
- 15:04You know, it doesn't mean it's, it's a failure if we're at a moon phase.
- 15:11Do you know what I'm saying?
- 15:12And, and I'd really.
- 15:15You know, that is a form of surrender in a way that I would like to support people to,
- 15:21to go for the best that they can imagine or that they desire.
- 15:27Even though there might be a thought that says.
- 15:33Or a reminder of someone saying you'll never get there.
- 15:37Don't shoot that high.
- 15:39Yeah, but, but to actually do it because we don't know what's possible until we actually try.
- 15:47We don't really know very much at all.
- 15:50And that is something that I've had to learn because, because I do have such high standards.
- 15:55And because I, I did used to think very much in black and white.
- 16:01Learning to kind of allow myself little stations on the way.
- 16:04Instead of shooting for the stars.
- 16:07And because, you know, you could just land in the black somewhere and that would be terrible.
- 16:10Thinking of maybe more like climbing a mountain and having all these little camps along the way.
- 16:14So it's not like I either reached the peak or I died.
- 16:19So that's how I used to do things.
- 16:21It was all or nothing.
- 16:22And some of my projects would crash and burn because I didn't plan.
- 16:29Kind of minimum viable products.
- 16:31So I didn't go, I didn't allow myself to accept that failure might be an option.
- 16:39And now I do.
- 16:40And that's much easier because it used to be if I don't get the perfect thing,
- 16:45everything crashes and burns and it was all useless, which is a horrible way to learn.
- 16:49And I've, I've ruined some relationships that way.
- 16:53And I've definitely learned some projects that way.
- 16:55But learning to kind of go, okay, well, this is what I want.
- 16:59What have we got halfway there?
- 17:00What would that look like?
- 17:01What if we only got a quarter of the way?
- 17:03What would that look like?
- 17:04And what are all those little milestones and stepping stones on the way?
- 17:08So we can reevaluate, you know, when we're halfway to the finish line,
- 17:13we can stop and reevaluate and go, okay, is it realistic to get to the finish line?
- 17:17Or what about, what about three quarters of the way?
- 17:21Could we aim for that instead?
- 17:22And just constantly kind of allowing, I don't want to say like failed things,
- 17:29but allowing your success to happen in stages
- 17:32so that you don't have to do a hundred percent the first time.
- 17:37And then any little increments is enough because it never used to be that way.
- 17:43And I hurt myself and other people very badly because of that.
- 17:48And because of that kind of black and white thinking.
- 17:50So I'm very glad I'm thinking stages now.
- 17:53I'm not quite sure when that changed.
- 17:55I think I started thinking about minimum viable products and kind of going, okay,
- 18:00best case scenario, worst case scenario.
- 18:02Like what is my absolute lowest bar?
- 18:08That helps.
- 18:09You know, it really makes a difference.
- 18:12Yeah.
- 18:13And something that's popping up for me in all this
- 18:16is about the Phoenix rising from the ashes.
- 18:19I used to believe that it had to be pretty fatal before the Phoenix arose from the ashes.
- 18:28But what if the Phoenix is always arising from the ashes when we don't stop?
- 18:37I love this.
- 18:39Like the dawn of a new day.
- 18:41Exactly.
- 18:43Yeah.
- 18:43Oh, I love that.
- 18:45Yeah.
- 18:46Yeah.
- 18:46What if every time we stop, it's a little stop.
- 18:50And every time we start again, it's a new beginning.
- 18:53I love that.
- 18:54Yeah.
- 18:57And the only way, again, that we're going to know that that's true
- 19:02is by allowing ourselves to go the distance and have it be where it is.
- 19:09And then like surrendering and then opening to something new again.
- 19:14Mm hmm.
- 19:16And allowing yourself to celebrate your small successes, too.
- 19:19Because if it's all or nothing, you don't measure, right?
- 19:22You're not measuring all the steps all the way there.
- 19:25You're like, I either climbed the mountain or I didn't.
- 19:27Instead of, I did 10 steps today.
- 19:29Was only 10 steps, but I did 10 steps further than I was yesterday.
- 19:33You know, I did one step today, or I did 20 steps.
- 19:35Whatever it is.
- 19:37You know, acknowledging how far we've come, we're very good at deleting our successes,
- 19:43deleting our progress and only looking forward.
- 19:46And I think that can be very, very dangerous.
- 19:50Yeah.
- 19:50Yeah.
- 19:51I totally agree.
- 19:53And I can totally relate to, you know, oh, my God.
- 19:57I remember when I read a book, the name of which I'm not recalling right now.
- 20:02But it said, you know, a shift can be like, let's just use physical exercise as an example
- 20:08or fitness as an example.
- 20:11Even if you do one sit up, as an example, in the evening, and then increase it by one.
- 20:21I think it was something about 1%, you know, increasing by 1%.
- 20:28Yeah, that it can make all the difference.
- 20:32But if we don't do anything on some level, these are my words now, psychologically, it
- 20:38diminishes us.
- 20:39When we do not even one thing, it will diminish us because there's that part of us that says,
- 20:45you're not doing a darn thing.
- 20:46Like, hello, you know, but even one says, I'm taking a step forward.
- 20:54You know, and yeah, and, you know, it maybe it doesn't take what we think that it does
- 21:04to build success.
- 21:09Yeah.
- 21:10I think we like to do it in the flashy way.
- 21:14You know, oh, lots of fireworks.
- 21:16We're gonna do it all at once.
- 21:17It's gonna be the big deal.
- 21:19Whereas really, it's more of the slog.
- 21:21It's the everyday when you don't feel like it, just doing something.
- 21:26I'm having to really, I'm having to really embrace that at the moment myself.
- 21:32I keep coming into all these obstacles.
- 21:35And I'm like, you know what?
- 21:36As long as I do something, if I do something every day, I'm not getting everything that
- 21:40I want to get done, done.
- 21:42I'm letting people down still.
- 21:43But if I could just keep moving forward, eventually, I'll get there.
- 21:49And it's not going to be tomorrow.
- 21:51And it may not be next week.
- 21:52But eventually, I'll get there.
- 21:54And it's slow.
- 21:57And it's painful.
- 21:58But I think it's very easy.
- 22:02And it's very sexy to kind of push yourself for a short amount of time.
- 22:07But that's not consistent.
- 22:09And then what after that, you know?
- 22:12Consistency is something that I've had to learn.
- 22:15Yeah.
- 22:16Consistency.
- 22:17Well, you know, something that I'm thinking about, you know, in terms of surrendering
- 22:21is surrendering to our humanity.
- 22:25But knowing that we also have high parts, you know?
- 22:30Like we also have things that are really good.
- 22:33And one thing, I've never been in the position that you are, Danielle, in business up until
- 22:40now.
- 22:42But one thing I've learned is that when I am feeling like I'm not showing up in life
- 22:51the way that I think I should or the way that I want to, when I keep in touch with
- 22:57people, you know, when I don't, because I used to, whenever I would make a mistake,
- 23:03let's just say if I was learning to do something, whether it was singing a song or playing the
- 23:09piano, I would go right back to the beginning.
- 23:12Right back to the beginning.
- 23:13The whole thing had to happen all again.
- 23:17But what I'm realizing is that, so I used to retreat.
- 23:22Again, I guess maybe that's something I used to do a lot.
- 23:25Because I felt bad about myself, I would hide.
- 23:31Hide from others.
- 23:33But what I've noticed, especially about you, and if I can just say working with you, you
- 23:40are always keeping all of us up to snuff on what's happening.
- 23:45You're not, you know, feeling so ashamed that you can't admit that things aren't going the
- 23:52way that you would really like them to go and is really your bar.
- 23:56And I mean this not only for you, Danielle, but for other people, it happens.
- 24:00So, you know, I can only tell you as an example, it warms my heart that you are still in touch
- 24:10with us.
- 24:12And, you know, when things aren't quite perfect, as you might say.
- 24:17You know why?
- 24:19Because to me, it's trust building.
- 24:25It gives credibility.
- 24:27None of us is perfect.
- 24:29None of us is perfect.
- 24:31But hiding from others in shame, I'm, of course, speaking for myself, but hiding from others
- 24:38in shame for being imperfect, nobody's winning.
- 24:44Nobody's.
- 24:45You know, that's so important for me to hear because, and this is where increments really
- 24:54come in, I think, because consistency is still something I'm very much learning how to build.
- 24:59And I also, I hide.
- 25:01I very much kind of elastic band, socially, especially.
- 25:06Uh, and it's funny, it's just funny to me because I have been hiding a lot, but not
- 25:13from you guys.
- 25:14So I've gotten to the point that my business where if I have an existing relationship with
- 25:19a client, I can stay in touch with them.
- 25:23But like my social media and people that I don't know very well and all that kind of
- 25:28stuff, I, that kind of stuff is so high from.
- 25:30So it's just so interesting that there's, for me, there's layers of intimacy and I used
- 25:37to hide from everybody.
- 25:39And now I have like my very intimate social circle.
- 25:42And then I have kind of like my intimate client circle.
- 25:45And then that's kind of where I'm able to not hide at the moment.
- 25:49But then I also have my not intimate client circle, which I do still hide from sometimes.
- 25:53And then like the public circle, which I very much hide from a lot.
- 25:56So it's just, it's interesting.
- 25:58It is, it's, it's building incrementally.
- 26:01Like I'm, I'm building my capacity.
- 26:04I used to disappear for months and then come back.
- 26:09And I still do that, but only on, only on the top layers now, instead of all of the
- 26:14layers.
- 26:14So, you know, that's, I really like hearing that because that makes me think maybe it's
- 26:21possible to get to that point with everybody.
- 26:24Wouldn't that be amazing?
- 26:25Wouldn't it be great to just show up in my life all the time?
- 26:28That would be like, really?
- 26:31Yeah, exactly.
- 26:33Yeah.
- 26:33And I really appreciate you sharing that, Danielle, because to me, you know, I was
- 26:38thinking about the credibility and trust I feel with you when that happens.
- 26:45But it sounds like there's also a credibility and trust in you, for you that happens as
- 26:53a result of keeping showing up in the best ways that you possibly can so that nobody's
- 26:59thinking, where's Wendy?
- 27:00Where's Danielle?
- 27:02Where's, you know, and like, oh my God, have they left me?
- 27:06You know, kind of thing.
- 27:07And it's, you know, and it's, it's not the, I think this is such an important thing to,
- 27:15to keep showing up as much as we can, because we're all human.
- 27:20We're all human.
- 27:22And it is shame, I think.
- 27:25Um, for me, it's, it's shame because, you know, I'm aware that I have so many emails
- 27:30in my inbox that I haven't responded to.
- 27:32And I'm aware that I have so many emails in my LinkedIn and my Facebook that I haven't
- 27:36responded to.
- 27:37And I don't want to post until I've responded to them because I feel like that's rude, you
- 27:44know, just to kind of be like, hey, I'm here when it happens, you know, and so there's,
- 27:48there's so much going on there around politeness and around respect and around shame.
- 27:54And I don't have the answer yet.
- 27:58But it's something that I find interesting about myself.
- 28:04And I know I'm not the only one who feels this way.
- 28:07I think a lot of people feel this way, so.
- 28:09No, no, but it's really about.
- 28:13At it.
- 28:14Yeah, well, exactly what I was going to say, not only keep at it, but make sure that the
- 28:19people that we're with the most, where we have that control is the people that know the
- 28:27truth of who we are and accept that, that they are human also, so they can have some
- 28:32compassion for when others in our circle are, are human.
- 28:37And, and the, you know, every moment, honest to God is a new moment.
- 28:45Every moment we can choose again, if we're willing, if we're willing to surrender the
- 28:51previous moments and any decisions we're going to make when we're willing to surrender
- 28:57to now is a new moment.
- 28:59I have a choice.
- 29:02What will it be right now?
- 29:06Oh, Wendy, that's so beautiful.
- 29:08I think that's such a beautiful way to end this because letting go of all of the heaviness
- 29:14and the garbage and the like, the catching up of the past, letting all of that go.
- 29:20Letting yourself be here.
- 29:22Letting yourself be present.
- 29:25Saying goodbye to Wednesday, Wednesday, wisdom, whatever.
- 29:32Wednesdays with Wendy, say goodbye to that and hello to a new season because this is
- 29:40the end of our season together.
- 29:43Yes, that's right.
- 29:44And, um, and also appreciating and kind of waiting expectantly to see what that new beautiful
- 29:51Phoenix will be as these flames die down and these ashes cool to see what comes next and
- 30:00how exciting that will be and not ruining what comes next by comparing it to what was,
- 30:04but just allowing every moment to be its own beautiful self.
- 30:09Do you have any final wishes for our listeners?
- 30:13I think it's just the wish that each one can build their confidence in looking at something
- 30:22that they've believed before that is really actually not working for them and know that
- 30:30there is, um, there's another, there's another belief.
- 30:34There's another way.
- 30:35There's another opportunity and to just keep opening.
- 30:39Yeah.
- 30:42And surrender to what is so that you can so that you can implement whatever change that
- 30:49you want and you can actually start to grow into what you want to be because you will
- 30:54never get where you want to go through denial.
- 30:59It'll never get.
- 31:00Yes.
- 31:01So embrace reality.
- 31:05Let your, let yourself be human and messy and infallible and move from there because it
- 31:16is a beautiful place to be.
- 31:17And thank you.
- 31:19Thank you for these amazing episodes.
- 31:22This has been such a joy, such a, such a rich experience for me.
- 31:29Thank you so much.
- 31:30You too, Danielle.
- 31:32You too.
- 31:33I'll see you soon.
- 31:35See you soon.
