Latest / Sessions Canceled / The New Unearthed Arcana Horror Subclasses, Pretty Good?: Ep. 151
Transcript
- 0:17The GM did 0 prep, no prep at all, completely forgot even
- 0:22really what day of the week it is.
- 0:24No preparation was had, sessions very cancelled.
- 0:27Oh. My God.
- 0:35Welcome back, welcome back. And you know, as per as per the
- 0:40statements we just and Isaiah just made to me and we just made
- 0:43to each other. Broadly speaking, I don't for
- 0:48Gore who's who's turn it was today.
- 0:52So I thought it was Isaiah's. So I didn't really have anything
- 0:56ready to go. And Isaiah was new, remembered
- 1:00it was me, but didn't say anything so.
- 1:03Whoa, whoa, brother, you're not putting this on me.
- 1:08Hold on, hold on. Just to be clear, when I say
- 1:10doesn't didn't say anything, what I mean is like you didn't
- 1:12ask me what the plan was or anything, so that did not prompt
- 1:16my brain. Like you didn't ask, like what
- 1:18are we doing? You know what I mean?
- 1:20So yeah, I I guess the 'cause you often.
- 1:22Do. I do sometimes, yeah.
- 1:24I like there are some weeks where we we talk like on the
- 1:27previous days about what the episode's going to be about if
- 1:30it requires like a certain amount of homework.
- 1:32But then there's like the the sort of lower, not priority
- 1:35days, but like the the less immediately sticks out to us
- 1:38days where we kind of just, you know, decide on a couple days
- 1:43before or that morning of if it's the morning of like
- 1:45particularly a lot of information about or like a lot
- 1:49of information that we already have, we don't need research
- 1:50for. Yeah.
- 1:52And that will will sort of just run it on the fly or like the,
- 1:54you know, the the stream of consciousness episodes.
- 1:57Those are all pretty much improv with no script.
- 1:59But yeah, I know we are. We are flying by the seat of our
- 2:04cocks today. Like, yeah.
- 2:06We're cooked. We're so cooked.
- 2:07Cooketh. Yeah.
- 2:08So you might say, what are you doing on the fly?
- 2:11Well, conveniently, a new UA came out this morning.
- 2:14So we're talking about the new. Yeah, you might say.
- 2:17Did you read it? Kinda.
- 2:19I watched the video. I didn't watch the video.
- 2:25I kind of read it and I have some thoughts.
- 2:27All right, so here we go. We're gonna and we're just.
- 2:29So I hope you're ready all ready for some reading as we go.
- 2:33Yeah, 'cause. That's what's gonna happen.
- 2:34But before before you start, follow us on your social media
- 2:38platform of choice. Yeah, if you like this, if you
- 2:40like this shit, No, not fucking. I don't give a shit about the
- 2:43social media. Follow on the podcast platform,
- 2:45Sir. Fair enough.
- 2:46Yeah, if you like, if you like this shit show of a train, hit
- 2:49the subscribe button. That'd be.
- 2:50Nice to have a train. Shit show of a train, What the
- 2:53hell? No, this is an I'll omen.
- 2:58Good start. Good start.
- 3:02Well, the other thing I was going to say is we're almost at
- 3:05100 a hundred subscribers on YouTube.
- 3:07So if you could, you could bump us up to 100.
- 3:09That'd be cool. I know it's an arbitrary number,
- 3:11but I like that number. It's.
- 3:12A good number that would be sexy.
- 3:14Yeah, I mean, we're over 100 when you put the two platforms
- 3:17together, but on YouTube specifically, we're almost at
- 3:19100, so I thought that'd be nice.
- 3:23So yeah, Wizards of the Coast a little quiet right now.
- 3:31You know, there's been some news about Wizards of the Coast and
- 3:34some people are in the D&D is dead Cabin.
- 3:37Cabin. What camp?
- 3:40Jeez, I I decide, but Brand needs a minute.
- 3:51I I no brother, I get it. I understand.
- 3:55Some people are in the D&D is dead camp or dying.
- 4:00It's not. There's just a little shuffling
- 4:02going on and so they're a little quiet right now.
- 4:05That's really all that's going on.
- 4:06I will say we just got the 5.2 SRD and it is officially in
- 4:13Creative Commons. So we have the updated SRD and
- 4:17they cannot take it away from us unless, I don't know, fucking
- 4:22Trump destroys the rules for Creative Commons or something.
- 4:24Maybe. But other than that situation
- 4:28which I don't think is gonna happen, we have the 5.2 SRD
- 4:32officially and it is fully in creative common so that's nice.
- 4:37And also DND beyond is getting some maps from Che Peku which is
- 4:43interesting. Like officially on the platform.
- 4:45I already fucking subbed to them on Patreon so like.
- 4:48I feel like everyone does. They're so good dude, I like
- 4:51them so much. I follow them on their fantasy
- 4:53and sci-fi. Nice.
- 4:59So yeah, they're officially on on DMDB on now, which is
- 5:02interesting. Also, just in case anyone was
- 5:08curious, Sigil is still getting some very minor updates, so
- 5:14that's cool I guess. They added to Displacer Beast
- 5:21Mini today and they added an undo function which is still
- 5:30crazy that wasn't in there in the 1st place.
- 5:32Just just say. Yeah, it's a little, like
- 5:35ridiculous. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 5:37It's a good word for. It so all that all that being
- 5:43said, we got a new UA Now some of you may be wondering all
- 5:46right, so we got a new five EUA. Usually the UAS are, you know,
- 5:54poor tense omens for upcoming projects, right?
- 5:57So the last two U as we got were about the Artificer and Eberon
- 6:00stuff because an Ebron book's coming out.
- 6:04This UA is I think it's six. Wait, let me count real quick.
- 6:0912345 I just got damn it. 123-4567 OK, 7 subclasses that
- 6:23they're calling horror subclasses, which I'm not going
- 6:30to lie, I'm intrigued by that right off the bat because are we
- 6:37getting like an updated Van Richten's guide?
- 6:42I I mean Van Richten's guide was already the update.
- 6:45I can't imagine we are, but I don't know what else it could
- 6:48be. Unless.
- 6:49It could be. We could just be getting a
- 6:51revamp of the original Borovia setting book.
- 6:55They seem to be pretty like big on the setting books and this is
- 6:58this edition around. Maybe that's interesting, I
- 7:08don't know. I didn't consider that.
- 7:11Well, because I and the reason for that could be right is you
- 7:14can just use Curse of Strad or Van Ricken's guide.
- 7:17But those are sort of pointed, right?
- 7:20Like you, you are going to fight Strad and you can use that
- 7:24setting information to do other things, but it all sort of
- 7:26revolves around Strad as a character, whereas Borovia is
- 7:29more than just Strad. So like.
- 7:32That's very true. You.
- 7:33Can see some other stuff going on there.
- 7:35That's very true, yeah. So I don't know, I, I don't know
- 7:39what's going on there, but we got 7 horror subclasses.
- 7:45So intrigue, I suppose. I don't know, I'm in kind of AI,
- 7:49don't I think, not that I'm gonna speak for you, but I,
- 7:53well, I am gonna speak for you a little bit.
- 7:55But I think I'm probably right in my assumption.
- 7:58I think both of us are currently in a position where we're just
- 8:03sort of watching 5E from a far distance right now because we
- 8:07are neither in any 5E games nor running any 5E games and we're
- 8:12both a little bit burnt out on it so.
- 8:15We're. Kind of just watching from a
- 8:17curious distance. Yeah, we're just going.
- 8:20Oh yeah, look at that. Yeah.
- 8:24So this particular UAI wouldn't say I'm like super excited.
- 8:29I'm intrigued by a couple of the ideas and disappointed by a
- 8:33couple of the ideas. Surprise, surprise.
- 8:36Yeah, I, I don't know. I can't immediately single
- 8:39anything out that I'm disappointed.
- 8:41No, that's not true. I've got one thing.
- 8:42I think I know what you're thinking.
- 8:44I You probably do, yeah. Yeah.
- 8:48So, yeah, UA. Let's talk about the UA.
- 8:53It's it's real straightforward. It just has the seven
- 8:56subclasses, nothing else. So no other mechanics being
- 9:02added or anything, which is interesting 'cause I feel like
- 9:04they usually throw in some extra mechanic stuff, but not in this
- 9:08case. I also think it's funny because
- 9:12UA in the early days of 5E used to be a lot more.
- 9:21We're just going to throw some shit out and kind of see what
- 9:23happens, right? There wasn't wholly a plan with
- 9:27a lot of like, the revised Ranger is a great example that
- 9:30I'm thinking of. They just kind of threw that
- 9:31bitch out there to see what would happen, right?
- 9:33Yeah. Nowadays it seems like UA is
- 9:37very explicitly we're trying an idea for a future project.
- 9:41What do you think? And there's some pros and some
- 9:44cons to that. I would say so.
- 9:49So they didn't throw any mechanics in on this UA, even
- 9:52though it's probably poor attending a future project.
- 9:55So yeah, I don't know what's going on.
- 9:57It's kind of, it's a little up in there.
- 9:59It's a little hunky Dory. Interesting.
- 10:00I don't know. We'll see, that's enough beating
- 10:06around the bushel. What's the deal with the UI?
- 10:09What? So like I said, it's just
- 10:11subclasses. Want moist?
- 10:13What? First thing we're going to talk
- 10:15about uses the word moist in big bold letters.
- 10:18Just sticks out to me in a weird way.
- 10:19I just like. It does use the word moist.
- 10:22In big bold letters you can't escape.
- 10:25Us, you're right. So the first subclass is a brand
- 10:29new subclass and I just, I just think it's really funny.
- 10:39Like funny. I just think it's really funny
- 10:42because the first subclass listed is an artificer subclass
- 10:48called the Reanimator, and the basic vibe is that you're a mad
- 10:54scientist with a flesh golem. You know you have your
- 10:57Frankenstein's monster situation, right?
- 11:01And I don't hate that idea. Like I'm, I'm, I'm kind of cool
- 11:05with that concept, but it is kind of funny because it feels
- 11:08like A we got a necromancer artifice or before a necromancer
- 11:13wizard, which is kind of hilarious and B just another
- 11:19reason to not play Beastmaster. Yep, Yep, like.
- 11:26I just, and I know Beastmaster is is much more functional in
- 11:292024 it it absolutely is, but it still feels, it just feels like
- 11:36every other pet class is cooler than Beastmaster to the point
- 11:39where I'm like come. On man, yeah, it really do just
- 11:42be getting the Dick. Out of the century, like if you
- 11:45really, honestly at this point, if you're someone who plays 5 E
- 11:48and you really want to play a Beastmaster vibe, but you just
- 11:51can't with the the Beastmaster that's in the book.
- 11:54Look up the beast heart by MCDM. It is a it's an entire class.
- 11:58It's not just a subclass. It it just it does the
- 12:01beastmaster thing in the way that you want just so much
- 12:05better. So we have the reanimator.
- 12:14I guess I'll read the descriptions because why not?
- 12:16So the reanimator defies the laws of nature in the pursuit of
- 12:19gruesome experiment. These grim artificers, stitched
- 12:23together servants from disparate corpses, use foul magic to
- 12:26strengthen the living and transform the art of necromancy
- 12:28into a terrifying science. It's like I said, it's your, you
- 12:31know, your Doctor Frankenstein thing.
- 12:35You get your animator spells. I, I, these are never that.
- 12:39I mean, they're fine. These are never super
- 12:41interesting to talk about. I feel like.
- 12:43You know you start with false life, spare the dying witch
- 12:46bolt. Level 5 you get blindness,
- 12:48deafness enhance ability. Level 9 you get animated dead
- 12:51lightning bolt. Oh lightning bolt is a fun one.
- 12:55Level 13 you get blight and death ward.
- 12:57Level 17 you get anti life shell and raised dead.
- 13:01OK, wait, no, I do. I do actually quite like these.
- 13:03These all feel really fun and on brand.
- 13:05Like they're definitely. Thematically work, yeah.
- 13:11So first Level 3 ability is Jolt of life.
- 13:16Basically you can cast Spare the dying on a person and they
- 13:23actually instead of instead of being put in like a little
- 13:28suspended animation thing, they actually regain 1HP and get back
- 13:32up and then explode in a little ball of lightning doing AD 4D4
- 13:38plus half yard official level to everyone around them. 10 feet.
- 13:43I don't know that that's going to be like a super.
- 13:45Oh, actually wait a minute. Spare of the Dying is always
- 13:47range now, isn't it? Oh yeah.
- 13:50So actually that is going to be a pretty effective ability.
- 13:53I was going to say I don't know how effective it's going to be,
- 13:55but I forgot. Yeah, all Spare of the dying is
- 13:57range now instead of just grave domain.
- 13:59So yeah. So that's kind of a fun spell.
- 14:02You just, you just fucking lightning jolt to homie and they
- 14:05just pop up and explode. You.
- 14:08Oh no. You become the new world's worst
- 14:10defib. Except you're actually a good
- 14:11defib. Yeah.
- 14:16There's a there's a fun joke there in in our firemen
- 14:19campaign, a character died and we were like, do we have any
- 14:22electric spells to maybe like give this guy AD fib because we
- 14:24don't have any healing magic. And our one of an NPC we had
- 14:27just hit the corpse with a lightning bolt with no other.
- 14:30Oh my God. We just like put him into full
- 14:32panic attack mode and we were like, try anything.
- 14:34And he was like, OK, when it's a great deal describing how the
- 14:38dude's heart just exploded like a fucking grape.
- 14:40And we were like, oh, it was. We had the face of in the
- 14:46amazing World of Gumball. When Gumball drops the baby made
- 14:48of pizza and like steps on and slips when he walks on the
- 14:51stairs and the parents are just like mortified.
- 14:57What a reference it's. Such a good bit.
- 15:01There's many good bits in Gumball.
- 15:03It's. True.
- 15:04Remember the bit when Darwin opens it, you like clicks a pop
- 15:07up and it just keeps going and going going and the like light
- 15:10blows his fucking eyeballs out? That's just so good, dude.
- 15:17Oh fuck. So the the other primary Level 3
- 15:24for the subclass is the reanimated corpse.
- 15:27This is your Frankenstein's monster, your flesh golem thing.
- 15:32I, I get it, I know that this is just how five he does things,
- 15:40but I fucking cannot stand the way they describe this and I'm
- 15:45I'm going to read it to to get my point across.
- 15:50Using Tinkerer's tools or another type of artist and tools
- 15:55which you with with which you have proficiency, you can take a
- 15:58magic action to create a reanimated companion through the
- 16:02power of necromancy and science. The reason this really bugs me
- 16:08is because you're telling me that rules is written.
- 16:11I can pull out my tinkerer tools, throw some fucking
- 16:15hammers and nails on the floor and within 6 seconds make a
- 16:19fucking Frankenstein's monster pop into existence.
- 16:22Yep. I hate that mental image so
- 16:26deeply and I don't know how I would explain this fictionally
- 16:33because there's no universe where I'm going to say that my
- 16:36my reanimate golem just pops into existence because that
- 16:38sounds so fucking lame. So I don't know how I would
- 16:41describe that if I was playing the subclass, but I would find
- 16:45some way to explain why he can just pop up in 6 seconds.
- 16:49Maybe like the corpse is like tied to my back or something or
- 16:53in a backpack and I unload him something like.
- 16:55That or maybe hit him with the fucking the the Gara sand gourd.
- 16:59Yeah, yeah, yeah, the sand gourd, right.
- 17:01Or maybe I carry him around on a wagon or something.
- 17:03I don't know. But I I hate the idea that he
- 17:06just like there's a puff of smoke and he just exists.
- 17:09I hate that. I hate that soap.
- 17:11It dil deeply this. This does.
- 17:14This is a thing. We've talked about this before.
- 17:16It's the thing 5E does. Yeah, we're we're 5V is afraid
- 17:20to make you work for it. Like if they were like after a
- 17:23battle, you can, you know, you can scavenge pieces of corpses
- 17:27from the battlefield and you can make your flesh golem.
- 17:29But they're like, but what if you're not in a battle and it's
- 17:32like, well, then and you don't get to make the golem, They just
- 17:39then they go. But what if they but you don't
- 17:41have your and then you go, OK, then you make it really strong
- 17:43so it's hard to die and you can only bring it back once a day.
- 17:45That's the, that's the offset. Yeah, well, I just imagined this
- 17:49an ability like this in Fabula and you know, the wording would
- 17:53be, you know, you you find the pieces of like desiccated
- 17:59bodies, you know, somewhere, you know, however you manage to like
- 18:05you it would it would be a it'd be a little open-ended, right?
- 18:07Be like you find the pieces of desiccated body somehow and then
- 18:11you spend time to do a project to stitch the creature together,
- 18:14right. Like that would be the wording
- 18:15in Fabula. And that's what I want.
- 18:18But 5 E being like, it's a just a magic action and then he shows
- 18:22up. I'm just like, it's just, and,
- 18:27and you're right, what they're doing is they don't want to make
- 18:29you work for it because they want to make it as generic as
- 18:31possible to work in any kind of game.
- 18:33This is we, we're going to bring this up again and for another
- 18:36example in a minute, don't you worry.
- 18:38So it's just like, and I know I'm harping a lot on this, but
- 18:42it just it bugs me that they keep doing it's the same thing
- 18:45as the the animals that the beastmaster summons are all
- 18:49spirit animals. I fucking hate that so much Hate
- 18:54that they're spirits. That drives me insane, and I
- 18:57know most people probably don't give a shit about that, but it
- 19:00bugs me in a special kind of way.
- 19:03No, I mean I agree. I like anyway, I personally like
- 19:06that they're spirits, but I think it's totally valid to be
- 19:10like. But no, I'm a beast master, not
- 19:11a like a spirit caller or whatever.
- 19:13Yeah, I want a real yeah. Like there's a there's a
- 19:15universe where I could flavor a beast master as more of like a
- 19:18shamanistic spirit caller. And that's fine.
- 19:20But I want, I want my, I want trinket, right?
- 19:23I want Vex and trinket. I don't want like, I don't want,
- 19:28I want, I want Clive and Torgle. I don't want I.
- 19:32Can't think of Ender Lily situation.
- 19:35Yes, yes. I mean, that's kind of a
- 19:36sneezier example, but yes, I don't want an Ender Lily
- 19:39situation for the Beastmaster. I don't want them to be like
- 19:42spirits tied to my soul, you know?
- 19:45I want like, part of the reason that Torgal is so cool in Final
- 19:50Fantasy 16 is because you start the game and he's a little baby
- 19:53puppy and Clive is learning how to be a soldier.
- 19:56And he's like playing with the puppy.
- 19:57And you're like, oh, it's my friend.
- 19:58And then you you lose Torgal for a little while and he gets
- 20:02captured and then you meet him again.
- 20:03You're like, oh, it's my dog. And then your dog's like, Oh my
- 20:06God, it's my master. And then you find out the
- 20:08Torgal's been hanging out with your buddy Sid and learning how
- 20:11to fight as like a cool badass. Like giant war wolf and then you
- 20:16find out he's like literally a special magical wolf and that's
- 20:19even cool. Like it's the whole narrative of
- 20:22knowing him from when he's a puppy, you know?
- 20:26Anyway, sorry I rabbit this is this is a rabbit hole.
- 20:29But this is one of those things. It's a trend I've noticed in 5 E
- 20:33that bugs the shit out of me. No, it's fair.
- 20:35I I get it. So the the companion, the
- 20:40reanimated companion has all of the usual rules that most of
- 20:44them does. You know, it's friendly, blah
- 20:46blah blah. It lasts until you finish a long
- 20:50rest or do the magic action to dismiss it, in which this also
- 20:56bugged me. So you could do the magic action
- 20:58to dismiss it, at which point it harmlessly collapses into a pile
- 21:01of viscera. So we're acknowledging that it's
- 21:04physically present as a pile of meat in some capacity, but we
- 21:07can do the magic action to pop it into existence.
- 21:12Right? Like, that's.
- 21:13Yeah, that's a little weird. What?
- 21:14Yeah, wait, why does it just explode into viscera like?
- 21:17So like it pops. Like a balloon, I know it falls,
- 21:20it's like it falls apart but like viscera assumes like bloody
- 21:24and and trails it just like. The word, the wording's a
- 21:28little. It just kind of and then guts
- 21:30everywhere surprise all organs like I imagined.
- 21:38Like I imagine like the stitching on the flesh comb, all
- 21:40the stitching comes undone. It falls apart in pieces.
- 21:43That's what I thought of. When you do that, it drops to
- 21:49hero to zero hit points and then it has an ability called death
- 21:52burst. It basically explodes.
- 21:54I do like this a lot. Yeah, it's kind of fun.
- 21:57So I had an interesting thought because this act, not entirely,
- 22:01but there is some reminiscence here that lead back to the old
- 22:05arcane mechanist, and I'm really happy to see this.
- 22:10It's not like the mechanics are different, but the spirit of The
- 22:12thing is they'll air all. Right, that makes sense.
- 22:14I will have I I have to say this.
- 22:16I got to give them credit for this.
- 22:18Did I want Arcane Mechanist? Yes.
- 22:21Yes. But if I was going to get it in
- 22:25any other way, shape or form. Doctor Frankenstein Yeah, no,
- 22:30this is it. I like this a lot.
- 22:31Like, yeah, pretty good. Like I I it's like, this isn't
- 22:34what I wanted. And then I look at it and go,
- 22:37fuck, that's cool. Yeah, fuck.
- 22:39It's kind of cool though. Yeah, it's the no one likes to
- 22:42show off except for if what you're showing off is dope as
- 22:44fuck. Yeah, yeah, it's true.
- 22:50They got me When you create the companion basically you can do
- 22:57it once a day or as they've done many times, you can burn spell
- 23:00slots and then in combat you can use a bonus action to command it
- 23:04to do stuff yeah you know the usual minion rules still apply.
- 23:10So it has it's AC is 10 plus your int modifier which means
- 23:15it's AC will probably be it's AC will be decent and it's health
- 23:19is 4 is 4 + 4 times your artificer level.
- 23:26Which does mean gonna die pretty easy if it gets hit.
- 23:32But that's I think probably a little bit on purpose because
- 23:37the your companion explodes when it dies.
- 23:41Dexterity saving throw DC equals your spell save DC.
- 23:44Each creature in a 10 foot emanation originating from the
- 23:49companion take 2D6 necrotic damage if they fail, which is
- 23:54not. It's not a bad amount of damage.
- 23:56Lightning Absorption. Whenever the companion subjected
- 23:59to lightning damage, it regains a number of hit points.
- 24:01I like that that you. That's a thing you could do.
- 24:05They didn't give the away. Artificers don't have can trips,
- 24:09right? No, no.
- 24:12Right. OK, so you might have to ask
- 24:14your wizard to hit him with some shocking grasp every once in a
- 24:16while, which I'm actually OK with.
- 24:19That's kind of fun. And then it has Dreadful Swipe,
- 24:23which is its basic melee attack, does necrotic damage, and the
- 24:26target can't take opportunity attacks until the start of its
- 24:30next term, which is good 'cause you're an artificer, so you're
- 24:32probably not going to be that tough.
- 24:33So you have it, Dreadful Swipe, and then you can run away a
- 24:35little easier. That's cool.
- 24:38Then you get your strange modifications.
- 24:39Whenever you create an animated companion, it gains one of the
- 24:42following options of your choice when you create it.
- 24:45So you have to pick the form it takes when you make it, but it's
- 24:49when you create it. So every day you can, you know,
- 24:52change it. Arcane Conduit, you can cast
- 24:55spells through it as if it were in, as if you were in the
- 24:59companion space. Once per turn when you cast an
- 25:02artifice or spell from evocation or necromancy and it deals
- 25:05damage while your companion is within 120 feet of you, you can
- 25:08add your int modifier. So basically you can use it as
- 25:10a, you know, go go stand next to the goblins and then cast
- 25:15fireball on it and then it explodes extra or whatever or
- 25:20ferocity when you command your companion to take the dreadful
- 25:22swipe action, it can attack twice.
- 25:24So basically it's just, you know, it gains multi or sorry,
- 25:28it gains the multi attack property.
- 25:32I just I said it gains multi because that's the phrasing
- 25:36Fabula uses for a similar thing and my.
- 25:38Yeah, yeah, yeah, I darn it. I also it.
- 25:41Gains the multi tag I Nope, it's funny.
- 25:43That you say that because you said multi and I was like, yeah,
- 25:46I know. And then we went, wait, no, that
- 25:48was it. No, it's not it.
- 25:49No, it's not it. Wrong game, wrong game.
- 25:53Sorry I'm checking really quick on the artificer spells they do
- 25:59they do get cantrips I I just checked 5V tools for like.
- 26:06Did they get Cauldron? Did they get 2?
- 26:09They do have shocking grass. Oh, OK, cool.
- 26:11So you can chalk and grasp him. All right, that's good.
- 26:12I really. So you know what's funny?
- 26:14I have a very like state alchemist like idea for this.
- 26:18I don't know particularly why, but just the idea that you're
- 26:20like, hold on, but I got you fucking edit.
- 26:22Albert claps hands together and. Give him the zippy.
- 26:26Yeah, zapped up. Then you have improved.
- 26:30So as you might imagine, the entire subclass is based around
- 26:33your reanimated companion guy. Oh, I did forgot to mention he's
- 26:38a initially. He is a small undead.
- 26:43So he's a little munchkin. He's yeah.
- 26:45So he's a little like Munchkin Monster.
- 26:48It does get bigger, don't worry. So improved your animation.
- 26:54Whenever you create a reanimated companion, it gains one of the
- 26:57following options of your choice.
- 26:59Choose. When you create it, it can be
- 27:00bloated, which means it becomes Large or medium, your choice.
- 27:04I don't know why you would ever not pick large, but yeah, I
- 27:07guess if you're in this tight space.
- 27:10Whenever it hits a large or smaller creature with its
- 27:12dreadful swipe, that creature can also be pushed 10 feet away.
- 27:16Additionally, you can add your int modifier to the damaged
- 27:19dealt by its death burst. So basically bloated's the
- 27:21slightly more like tanky 1 Gaunt?
- 27:26But for some reason bloated reminds me of the Foo Fighters
- 27:29song The Dead and bloated Or is that?
- 27:31No, it's not fighters. That's.
- 27:33No, it's not Foo Fighters. Oh no, I.
- 27:36Don't know who that is though. I.
- 27:40Don't know, please continue. I don't.
- 27:41I don't know. I got fucking sidetracked.
- 27:43You have the gaunt version. You have the gaunt version which
- 27:48the companions. This is the fast 1.
- 27:50The companions speed increases to 45 feet.
- 27:52It games a climb speed, it can climb difficult surfaces,
- 27:56including ceilings, which is read that yeah, it could just
- 28:02grudge across without needing to make an ability check.
- 28:07In addition, when a creature of your choice starts its turn
- 28:09within 10 feet within a 10 foot emanation originating from a
- 28:13companion, the creature must succeed in a Wisdom save spell,
- 28:16Wisdom saving throw against your spell save DC, or have the
- 28:20frightened condition. Which makes sense 'cause it's a
- 28:23horrifying skitter creature. And then the last one moist,
- 28:32your companion gains a swim speed equal to its speed.
- 28:35In addition, whenever the companion is hit by an attack
- 28:37roll from the creature within 10 feet of it, the attacker takes
- 28:40acid damage equal to your Intelligence modifier.
- 28:43Which is really gives me a really gross thought because I
- 28:45just imagine someone hitting the weird flesh golem and then it
- 28:48just like burps acid on them basically.
- 28:50Yeah, it's a bloater from a. Oh no, it's a bloomer from Left
- 28:544 Dead. The ones.
- 28:55That puke, Yeah. Yeah.
- 28:56The ones that puke, yeah. Or like you hit it in the
- 28:58stomach and it like, burst a pustule or something.
- 29:01Yeah. And then level 15 Promethean
- 29:05reanimation. Promethean.
- 29:07Reanimation I I like that name. That's a good name.
- 29:11Facilitated revival. When you cast Revivifier Raised
- 29:14Dead, the cost of the material components is halved.
- 29:18OK Improved Companion. The damage of your companion's
- 29:21death burst goes up to four D6. Necrotic damage dealt by your
- 29:25companion ignores resistance, which is good considering how
- 29:29resistances work in 2024 and life transfer.
- 29:34You can siphon the animating magic of your companion to
- 29:36bolster yourself. When you take damage, you can
- 29:39take a reaction to cause your animated companion to drop
- 29:42TO0HP. The companion immediately dies,
- 29:45triggering its death burst, and you regain a number of hit
- 29:48points equal to your artificial level.
- 29:51So that's a cool one. Is it level 15?
- 29:55Cool, Iffy, but it is 3 different abilities on top of
- 30:01each other, so pretty good. Yeah, I mean, I'm, I'm this
- 30:05honestly, of all of the subclasses and that I've looked
- 30:08at, this is the one that I'm like, I want to play this really
- 30:12bad. I think the the like mental, the
- 30:18the aesthetic, the mental image of this subclass is definitely
- 30:21cool. Again, I'm not against it, I
- 30:25just do think it is funny. We got it before Necromancer
- 30:27wizard. Oh it's hilarious.
- 30:29What's what's the anime character that had the coffin on
- 30:31their back? I You're not thinking of gold,
- 30:36Lewis Dickinson, are you? No, no.
- 30:38Although that would be funny. OK.
- 30:41Coffin on their back. Character with often.
- 30:47So in my head I want to say conquer row, but it's not
- 30:49conquer row, it's. It's no Conquer Row has the
- 30:51wrapped up puppet coffin. Who has a coffin often for a?
- 31:002nd it's the dude from Gungrave. There we go.
- 31:02Oh what a what a reference bro. The dude from Gungrave?
- 31:09Wait, isn't his name literally Gungrove?
- 31:11It might be, oh you know, second episode I'm bringing him up.
- 31:15Haji from Blood Plus has the cello case that looks like a
- 31:18casket. Nice.
- 31:20I just I would want to play just like a fucking creepy little
- 31:23grungler like Susie from Little Witch Academia, just like the
- 31:27creepy character and just have a coffin on my back with a little
- 31:31dude in it. Right, although I will say I
- 31:37just realized something with the life transfer because it only
- 31:39takes a magic action to summon the court, the reanimated
- 31:43companion. You could like use the life
- 31:46transfer, get the HP back, blow him up and then next turn pick
- 31:49him up with the magic action and use your bonus action to command
- 31:52him to attack. So.
- 31:54I love that dude. They're gonna catch that.
- 31:57But I love that so much. I don't.
- 31:59I don't know that I don't. I don't.
- 32:00I mean maybe, but I don't think so.
- 32:01That seems intentional. That seems gone out.
- 32:04I think so, yeah, 'cause the idea is like you, you burn your
- 32:07main action, but you have a bonus action to be like, you
- 32:09know, command him to still do something.
- 32:11I think that makes sense. Oh no, I'm, I'm thinking too
- 32:15much about this already 'cause I'm like, oh, I just, this
- 32:17character's playlist would just be a bunch of Helsing music.
- 32:20Nice. Then we get College of Spirits
- 32:25barred. I.
- 32:27I was really surprised to see this one.
- 32:30Yeah, yeah, for sure. I was like, I didn't think this
- 32:34needed a rework at all. No, I think it was good.
- 32:37Exactly what it it. They made it stronger.
- 32:38They gave it fucking Spirit guardians, for God's sakes.
- 32:41But yeah. I thought that was interesting,
- 32:46so change log. So College of Spirits, if you
- 32:50don't know, was in Van Richten's guy and it is a Bard.
- 32:56Bard subclass changes, Guiding Whispers and Spiritual Focus are
- 33:03now compile combined into a single feature called Channeler.
- 33:08This new feature also grants you proficiency with playing cards.
- 33:12Wait, didn't it already do that? Hold up.
- 33:13It didn't already? I thought so.
- 33:15I thought it did too. Am I tripping?
- 33:18I'm about to look right now because that's really funny if
- 33:20it didn't before. Hold on, please hold spirits.
- 33:29You learn guidance can trips you employ the aid chilling spirits.
- 33:36Oh no. It said you could use a candle,
- 33:39a crystal ball, a skull, a spirit board, or a taroka deck
- 33:42as your spell casting focus, but it didn't give you proficiency
- 33:47in playing cards, which is fun. I mean it doesn't really matter,
- 33:52but is kind of funny that they didn't think that.
- 33:56Spirits from the Beyond, formerly called Tales from the
- 34:00Beyond, has been reworked to improve its action economy and
- 34:03produce more immediate effects. The option on the features table
- 34:06have been revised as the options on the features table have been
- 34:10revised as well. I kind of like Tales from the
- 34:14Beyond as a name better. That's their table that they
- 34:23roll on when they do a Bard of inspiration and then empowering
- 34:26channeling a new feature that allows a Bard to cast the spirit
- 34:29guardian spell, which is sick for sure.
- 34:34So guiding whisper you, you know, the guidance can trip and
- 34:37it has a range of 60 feet when you cast it, which before.
- 34:41Oh, no. OK, yeah, it did still do that.
- 34:44Oh yeah. They didn't change them at all.
- 34:45They literally just smushed them into what?
- 34:47That's not even all right, whatever, I guess.
- 34:51And then Spirit Focus is the same.
- 34:54You employ tools that Asian channel experience.
- 34:56When you gain a gaming set, you have proficiency and you can use
- 34:59cards or one of the following items is your spell casting
- 35:02focus. And it was the stuff I listed up
- 35:04before. Oh, it doesn't specifically say
- 35:09a Toroka deck, which is interesting.
- 35:10It just says cards. So Spirits from the Beyond,
- 35:15which used to be called Tales from Beyond.
- 35:20While holding a spell casting focus, you take a bonus action
- 35:23to use one of your Part of Conspiration and call for it the
- 35:25powers of a spirit. Roll your part of Conspiration,
- 35:27die and refer to the spirits from the on table to determine
- 35:31the spirit you channel and then choose one creature you can see
- 35:34within 30 feet of yourself as the spirit's target.
- 35:38The spirit immediately takes effect.
- 35:40If the spirit's effect requires a saving throw, the DC equals
- 35:42your barred spell save. DCI just realized why they
- 35:46changed the name I think. I think they are trying to
- 35:52disassociate from the Romani gypsy stereotype stuff.
- 35:57Yeah, again, they they just so much originally that I don't
- 36:01feel like this was necessary, but fuck it.
- 36:04Yeah, well, because the idea before is to call Tales from the
- 36:07Beyond, and you were reading their tarot, right?
- 36:10So now it's you're summoning a ghost, which, all right, fine.
- 36:16I, I don't, I actually aesthetically I don't mind the
- 36:19idea of somebody in the ghost. So it's fine.
- 36:21But yeah, that is a little funny.
- 36:26Yeah. So they, it looks like they
- 36:28changed the names of some of these and I did see.
- 36:34So like tale of the. Oh, all right, I'm not going to
- 36:40read through them all. But basically the idea is you
- 36:42roll on AD 12 table, which obviously is you might realize
- 36:48you're like, wait a minute, but your bardic inspiration diet
- 36:50doesn't start as AD 12, correct? You can only roll so high at the
- 36:54beginning and then as you go up, you get better options on the
- 36:57table. But essentially you roll, you
- 37:01roll on this table and it's a random roll and you get
- 37:05different various beneficial effects.
- 37:07Sometimes super helpful, sometimes real dog shit.
- 37:12We had a College of Spirits character in my campaign that we
- 37:16did my last five E campaign. And sometimes it'd be super
- 37:21awesome, the shit he pulled, and sometimes it would just be not
- 37:23very useful to the situation. Always funny.
- 37:27Yeah, I mean, it's not that the stuff on the table is bad, it's
- 37:31just it doesn't always fit what you need it to do in the moment.
- 37:34Yeah, so I remember him pulling the one that stunned enemies a
- 37:39lot. That was a pretty good.
- 37:41One more often than I think like I any I would have expected,
- 37:44yeah. Yeah, they wait a minute.
- 37:48Did they change the one called Tale of the Dragon to just
- 37:50arsonist? They did.
- 37:52They did, in fact, do that. Oh my God.
- 37:55That's kind of gangster. Yeah, you just.
- 37:58Commit arson, all right. Sure.
- 38:06So yeah, Spirits from beyond. And then you get the empowered
- 38:09channelling power from the on. Once per turn, you cast a barred
- 38:13spell that deals damage, restores hit points, roll AD 6,
- 38:16gain a bonus to one of the spell's damage rolls or the hit
- 38:19points restored. I think that's the same ability.
- 38:23No it is not. No, no it is not.
- 38:25Never mind. Oh they remove spirit session?
- 38:32Oh that's fucking lame. That was the thing I remember
- 38:35Brett did the seance to get different spells.
- 38:39Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. They took that out.
- 38:41OK, so for those who don't know the way it used to work, you
- 38:44would do a spirit session where basically the Bard would do like
- 38:47a weird seance and you could get spells.
- 38:52You could choose a spell from a different class.
- 38:55So like a one point Brett took vampire touch.
- 39:01That's a really cool and I'm a little sad they took that way.
- 39:03Yeah, well, like that one's weird because that's you're just
- 39:07reading tarot. That's just a tarot reading.
- 39:09Like that's not. That's pretty.
- 39:11I mean, you can't. Well, no, it doesn't even phrase
- 39:14it that way. It says spirits provide you with
- 39:17supernatural insight. You conduct an hour long ritual
- 39:19channeling spirits, which can be done during a shorter long rest
- 39:23using your spiritual focus. You conduct the ritual with a
- 39:26number of willing creatures. At the end of the ritual you
- 39:28learn one spell of your choice from any class.
- 39:32The spell you choose must be equal level, equal to your
- 39:34number, blah blah blah mechanical.
- 39:36It doesn't actually even say you're doing Tara, it says
- 39:37you're just channeling spirits there.
- 39:42It looks like the thing they replaced it with was spiritual
- 39:44manifestation is the main thing, which is just you have spirit
- 39:47guardians always prepared. So it says you always have
- 39:53spirit guardians prepared. You can cast the spell once
- 39:55without a spell slot, and you regain the ability to cast it
- 39:57when you finish a long wrist cast it.
- 39:59That way, whenever you start casting the spell, you can
- 40:03modify it so spirits also guard against worldly threats.
- 40:08When you cast in this way, you and your allies within the
- 40:10spell's emanation have half cover.
- 40:12Once you modify the spell in this way, you can't do so again
- 40:15until you finish a short or long rest.
- 40:17That's kind of fun. So you get a little extra damage
- 40:20and a little extra healing, and you get spirit guardians always
- 40:22prepared. That's better, mechanically
- 40:28speaking. A little less fun flavour wise
- 40:32though. Yeah, that's this seems to be
- 40:36the ongoing theme, isn't it powerful?
- 40:38With five V 24, yes, that is the ongoing theme.
- 40:42Absolutely. And then you have Mystical
- 40:47Connection, which is unchanged. Basically, when you roll on your
- 40:50spirit table, you can roll twice and choose whichever dye you
- 40:53want to use. So yeah, yeah, I'm a little sad
- 41:02about losing spirit sessions. I and I didn't look at the whole
- 41:06spirits from beyond table, so I don't know how much they
- 41:09changed. I may like it less with those so
- 41:16little lukewarm on that one I guess at the end of the day.
- 41:20Yeah. And then we got Grave Domain
- 41:25cleric, which I mean. It was already so good, it was
- 41:33already so good and they just made it better.
- 41:38Here's the thing though, they did have to reprint it because
- 41:42it had a couple of things that just don't function correctly
- 41:45anymore based on the new rules. Look, I I totally get it.
- 41:49This is this. And Twilight Cleric is the bane
- 41:53of every DM's existence and they made it better.
- 41:58I don't know if I'd say grave domain is that crazy, but.
- 42:02When it dropped, it was, yeah, really good, like.
- 42:08I mean, it's good for sure. So the grave domain concerns
- 42:11itself with the boundaries between life and death.
- 42:13To those who tap into this domain's power, death is a
- 42:17foundational, natural, and inevitable parts of the
- 42:20Multivas. Such clerics seek to destroy
- 42:23undead and strive to shepherd spirits to the afterlife,
- 42:26whether his spirits want to go or not.
- 42:29The magic of those this domain also allows these clerics to
- 42:32stave off death for a time, particularly those for
- 42:35particularly for those who still have some great work to
- 42:38accomplish in the world. But this is merely a delay of
- 42:40death, not a denial of it. The grave will always claim it's
- 42:43due, so grave domain updates. The grave domain is from
- 42:50Xanathar's Guide, which feels like 10,000 years ago at this
- 42:53point. Circle of Morality now also
- 43:00grants you a small damage boost against bloodied creatures.
- 43:03That's good. I like that grave domain spells
- 43:06have been updated to include more versatility in combat
- 43:09relevant spells. Interesting.
- 43:12I don't remember what they got before.
- 43:13I'm gonna have to pull that up in a SEC.
- 43:17Pass to the Grave now produces an ongoing curse effect in
- 43:21addition to boosting the damage of an attack.
- 43:23Oh. Oh yeah.
- 43:25OK OK. Sentinel at Death's Door can now
- 43:32trigger on any attack, not just critical hit.
- 43:36OK. Divine Divine Reaper is a new
- 43:40feature that absorbs the previous benefits of Keeper of
- 43:43Souls and provides a boost to the Cleric's and Necromancy
- 43:46spells. All right.
- 43:49Brother Sentinel at Death Star is so fucking good it's actually
- 43:54crazy. OK so curse some more course of
- 44:00mortality. My brain wanted to say morality
- 44:03Mortality. You gave the ability to
- 44:08manipulate, blah blah blah. You gave the following benefits.
- 44:10Once per turn, when you cast a spell or hit with an attack role
- 44:13and deal damage to a bloody creature, that takes an extra D4
- 44:15and a chronic damage. This.
- 44:19I think this was the ability before that made it.
- 44:22Oh, was that not that ability? Oh no, it wasn't that circle of
- 44:26morality before. Oh Circle Morality was when you
- 44:34normally roll one or more hit dice to restore hit points with
- 44:36a with a creature at zero, you roll the Max number.
- 44:38In addition, you can cast Spare the Dying at a distance.
- 44:42Right, Which is irrelevant now, because that's all Spare of the
- 44:45Dying is already at a distance. Return life when you would
- 44:49normally roll one or more dice to restore hit points to
- 44:52creature. Zero hit points with the spell
- 44:53or with a spell or channel Divinity.
- 44:56Don't roll the dice for the healing.
- 44:57Instead use the highest number possible.
- 44:59OK, so you still get that part. OK, so they took out the spare
- 45:04of the dying bit, which makes sense, and you instead you get
- 45:06an extra D4 of damage against bloody creatures.
- 45:09I'm fine with that Yeah, not at all related to the previous
- 45:15ability even a little bit, but whatever I guess.
- 45:21Domain spells at Level 3 they get bane, chill, touch, Detect
- 45:25Evil and good, Gentle Repose, Ray of and female.
- 45:27That's a lot of Level 3 spells. That's.
- 45:29A lot of yeah. They used to get 2.
- 45:32Yep. Bane, False Life.
- 45:36No, at level well, at level 1 they got Bain and false life at
- 45:38Level 3 they got gentle repose and Raven Feebleman.
- 45:41Now they get Bain. Oh, oh, you know what it is
- 45:45'cause Claire Level 3 yeah, they don't have a level 1 subclass
- 45:48anymore. That's why that makes sense.
- 45:50That makes more sense. Revivifying vampiric touch is
- 45:54the that's the same blight dispel evil and good.
- 45:57They used to get death ward OK, and now they get hold monster
- 46:01and raised dead. They used to have anti life
- 46:04shell and raised it. I'll take hold monster.
- 46:09Also at Level 3 Path to the grave.
- 46:11I don't know, I said it that way.
- 46:14As a bonus action, you present your holy symbol used to your
- 46:17channel divided to curse one creature you can see within 30
- 46:20feet of yourself until the start of your next turn.
- 46:22Well, curse the creature has disadvantaged on attack rolls
- 46:24and saving throws. I'm sorry, what?
- 46:29OK when you were an ally can there's more.
- 46:33When you were an ally you could see hit the cursed target with
- 46:36an attack roll. You can end the curse early to
- 46:38make the attack deal extra narcotic or radiant damage equal
- 46:41to D 8 + a clerica. Holy fuck, dude.
- 46:46Wow. OK, I.
- 46:48Told. You wait so you can oppose
- 46:50disadvantage on attacks and saves and then if you're like no
- 46:53no just more damage you could just pop that for no action.
- 46:56Yep. Wow.
- 46:59This will be the bane of dungeon that's.
- 47:04OK. How much more damage do you want
- 47:07to do? Does that also does that Also
- 47:11does the pull of death if they're bloodied also apply for
- 47:13the extra D4 there? Probably right?
- 47:15Probably does, yeah. When you cast a spell or hit and
- 47:19tackle and deal damage. Yeah.
- 47:22So if you do it when you are an ally, When you are an ally.
- 47:26So if you hit, pop the thing, Yeah.
- 47:28You would also get the pull of death damage.
- 47:30So it's ADA plus cleric level plus AD 4.
- 47:34OK, Sentinel Death Door when? When you or a bloody creature
- 47:41you can see within 30 feet of yourself is hit with an attack
- 47:44roll, you can take a reaction to half the attacks damage.
- 47:47You can use this a number of times because you're a wisdom
- 47:49modifier. You would gain all our expended
- 47:51uses on a long wrist. That's pretty good.
- 47:55Yes, So what this used to do was cancel out crits but enemies
- 47:59can't crit anymore so Congrats, just half damage which it no,
- 48:04it's still solid. Incorrect, Sir.
- 48:07Enemies can crit again. They didn't stick with that.
- 48:10Yeah, they didn't stick to that rule.
- 48:12OK. So that's just the play test a
- 48:13little. I mean, it's still good,
- 48:16probably a little bit better, but it does.
- 48:18No, I mean, it's it's better because even if it is a crit,
- 48:21you can still have the damage. Yes, it can have any attack.
- 48:25That's kind of, that's kind of wild.
- 48:26I mean that the creature has to be bloodied.
- 48:31Although do you have to the wording's a little weird there.
- 48:35When you or a bloodied creature, you can see within 30 feet of
- 48:39yourself. So if so, if they're hitting
- 48:41you. You don't any damage.
- 48:44You could do it at any point. Ally needs to be interesting.
- 48:48OK, yeah. OK.
- 48:52Yeah, I used to block crits before.
- 48:56All right. And then Divine Reaper Enhanced
- 49:01Necromancy when you cast the spell of level 5 or lower from
- 49:04the necromancy school that targets one creature.
- 49:07Or a spell from the Grave Domain spells table.
- 49:12You can expend the use of Channel Divinity to target a
- 49:14second creature within the spell's range.
- 49:16If the spell requires costly or consumed material components,
- 49:20you must provide the material components.
- 49:23OK, so you can split a spell sorcerer just over there.
- 49:27Like what am I chopped liver? Keeper of Souls.
- 49:30When an enemy dies within 60 feet of you, you are one
- 49:33creature you can see within 60 feet of yourself or gain hit
- 49:35points equal to three times your cleric level.
- 49:39OK, at level 17 you can use this feature.
- 49:43You can't use this if you're incapacitated.
- 49:45I weird that they stipulated that, but OK, once you use this
- 49:50feature, you can't use it again until you finish a short or long
- 49:52rest. OK, that's pretty fucking good.
- 50:02It is pretty solid, yeah. Hold on, what's 17 * 3 real
- 50:05quick 51 HP. That's a good amount of HP.
- 50:08That's a. That's a that's like two hits at
- 50:11level 17. I would roughly ish.
- 50:13Yeah, Yeah, that's about assuming that like a character
- 50:17that an enemy that was dealing about 30 damage on a hit, Yeah.
- 50:20Yeah, OK. Yeah, grave domain got juiced.
- 50:30I told you it's it's insane. It's fucking crazy.
- 50:34That's pretty crazy. I'm not crazy.
- 50:37I mean, I always liked, I always thought the, the, the, you know,
- 50:43the tone, the vibe of, of grave domain was cool.
- 50:46So I'm, I'm fine with this. What it was at level 17 before
- 50:51OK. You can seize a trace of dice
- 50:53vitality from Parting Soul when an enemy you see dies within 60
- 50:57feet of you, you're 1 creature of your choice that is within 60
- 51:00feet regains hit points equal to the enemy's number of hit dice.
- 51:06That's a significant jump in the healing.
- 51:09Holy shit. Number of hit dice.
- 51:11So like even at high level what like 15 HP?
- 51:15Something like that, yeah. Now it's like 50 when you can
- 51:19use Wow. OK, yeah, so they just bumped
- 51:23the shit out of they gave you the enhanced necromancy to split
- 51:26the spell and bump the shit out of the healing.
- 51:30OK. And at level 20, you're looking
- 51:32at 60 healing OK. Yeah, I mean, I'm not, I'm not
- 51:45against it. I'm a little surprised, but I'm
- 51:47not against it. And then with now now we go to a
- 51:51new subclass. We have the Ranger Hollow
- 51:54Warden. Thoughts.
- 51:58Initial thought on this one. Just curious.
- 52:02It's good. It's not.
- 52:05It's. Not.
- 52:06It's better than usual, so I mean.
- 52:12OK, follow up question, Thoughts on the theme, the vibe, the
- 52:16tone? Yeah.
- 52:18I mean, I do like that you're like you're, you're Strider.
- 52:21You're like actually strider Aragon in the hunt in like Merck
- 52:24would like. That's a vibe.
- 52:26I like that. Yeah, you're like weird.
- 52:28You're like creepy like death forest Ranger, which I think is
- 52:31interesting. I do really like that when when
- 52:35they joke about master of combat, this subclass actually
- 52:38can. Yeah, pretty good.
- 52:40Quite good damage for fucking once.
- 52:44Yeah, so legends tell of the most ancient and fearsome
- 52:49terrors lurking within the old places of the earth,
- 52:52unfathomable and bloodthirsty entities of a fallow soil and
- 52:55sharpened claws. Hollow Wardens venerate and draw
- 53:00power from such beings, transforming themselves into
- 53:02similarly merciless and monstrous guardians that stalk
- 53:05along jagged close lines, across steep mountain crags and through
- 53:09other dark and wild places. So this is a new subclass called
- 53:12the Hollow Warden for the Ranger, as as we said.
- 53:18So Level 3 they get they get they get some Hollow Warden
- 53:22spells. Level 3 they get Wrathful spite,
- 53:25level 5 they get spike growth, which why does Ranger not have
- 53:31spike growth by default? OK level 9 they get Phantom
- 53:35Steed, I like that, that's cool. Level 13 they get hallucinary
- 53:38terrain which is another fun one.
- 53:40And level 17 they get the spell awaken.
- 53:43I don't remember what that spell does.
- 53:47I don't know what does. What does awaken do?
- 53:49Let's we're we're we're flying. We're flying high and dry on
- 53:53this one. Let's just, let's just look it
- 53:55up. Live transmutation spell.
- 53:59You spend the casting time tracing magical pathways within
- 54:02a precious gemstone and then touch the target.
- 54:08The target must be a beast or plant creature with an
- 54:11intelligence of three or less, or a natural plant that isn't a
- 54:14creature. The target gains an Intelligence
- 54:17of 10 and the ability to speak one language you know.
- 54:20The target's a natural plant. It becomes a plant creature and
- 54:23gains the ability to move its limbs, roots, vines, creepers,
- 54:25and so forth. It gains sense similar to
- 54:28humans. The DM chooses stats appropriate
- 54:30for the awakened plant, such as the stats for the Awakened shrub
- 54:33tree or awakened tree in the Monster Manual.
- 54:37The awakened target has the Charm condition for 30 days, or
- 54:39until you or your allies deal damage to it.
- 54:42When that condition ends, the awakened creature chooses its
- 54:44attitude towards you. Interesting.
- 54:50OK, I don't know about that spell.
- 54:55That's it's intriguing spell. All right then we have also a
- 55:07Level 3 Wrath of the wild. When you cast Hunter's Mark, you
- 55:11transform gaming the following benefits for the direction of
- 55:15the spell. I oh, it's tied to Hunter's Mark
- 55:19again. I just yes.
- 55:20Sir. Fucking Captain Hunter's Mark
- 55:25strikes again. Fly away, kids.
- 55:28Captain Hunter's Mark has struck again.
- 55:32Fucking I I can't, dude. I can't with the Hunter's mark
- 55:34thing. It's crazy.
- 55:36Ancient armor. You gain a proficient you or
- 55:38what? No, you gain a bonus to your AC
- 55:41equal to your Wisdom modifier minimum plus one as your body is
- 55:46wreathed in rotten bark and beastly bristles.
- 55:49I like the mental image of that a lot.
- 55:51That's aesthetically very cool. Yeah.
- 55:54Unnerving Aura When an enemy starts its turn within a 10 foot
- 55:58emanation originating from you, it makes a Wisdom saving throw
- 56:01against your spell save DC. On a failed save.
- 56:03You can it can either take an action or a bonus action not
- 56:08both Your shadows lengthen and twist around you, or you sprout
- 56:12unnatural gross like bloody antlers or putrid fangs.
- 56:15They're they're leaning into the This is the creepy Ranger
- 56:20hungering might. You gain a bonus to Khan saves
- 56:24equal to your Wisdom modifier minimum plus one in addition
- 56:27once per turn. When you hit a creature with an
- 56:29attack roll, you're transformed using Wrath of the Wild.
- 56:31You get regain you regain a number of hit points equal to AD
- 56:3610 plus your wisdom modifier, provided you are bloodied when
- 56:39you hit. I will say I do like that
- 56:43they're using buddied as a conditional modifier for things.
- 56:46That's cool. Yes, it's fantastic.
- 56:49It's good that it's actually getting utilized and it and it's
- 56:51good because it lets you make an ability that's a little bit
- 56:53stronger that you can use consistently because you can't
- 56:57use it all the time, right? You have to be in a certain
- 56:59state. Rot.
- 57:07There's like the name of this ability, Rot and violence.
- 57:11All right, Your dedication to eldritch forest beings alters
- 57:15you further. When you transform with Wrath
- 57:17using Wrath of the Wild, you gain the following additional
- 57:19benefits. Erie Aura.
- 57:21When a creature fails it's saving throw against your
- 57:23unnerving aura, it also takes necrotic, poison, or psychic
- 57:27damage, your choice equal to your Ranger level, and this
- 57:30damage ignores resistance. Cool like that not a ton of
- 57:34damage, but still a little extra damage is a little extra damage.
- 57:37That's fine. You know I if it's if it's like
- 57:40an aura or a passive thing like this, the the extra damage being
- 57:43not that big. I understand you know what I
- 57:45mean. Yeah, no, that's, yeah, I get
- 57:47it. It's a That's a fair way to go
- 57:49about it. Strangling Roots.
- 57:51When you hit a creature with an attack using a weapon, you can
- 57:54activate the SAP or slow mastery property in addition to a
- 57:58different mastery property you're using with that weapon.
- 58:00So essentially you always have the SAP or slow property,
- 58:04Sapper, slow weapon mastery property, and then Ancient
- 58:08endurance Persistent hunt. If you drop to 0 HP, this is
- 58:13their level 15 ability. If you drop to 0 HP well
- 58:17transformed using your Wrath of the Wild and don't die outright,
- 58:21you can expend a level 4A level 4 plus spell slot.
- 58:25No action. Your hit points then instead
- 58:28change to amount equal to five times level of the spell slot
- 58:32expended. So you just you if you have
- 58:36spell slots, you just don't die. You're like, no.
- 58:40I no, you can't kill me. Sorry.
- 58:43This is Captain Hunter's mark and we need to roast it for
- 58:45that. It is.
- 58:46I think we really should take a step back and praise this
- 58:51subclass for making Ranger even a little bit fucking cool.
- 58:57Like I read this the first time, it was like fuck this is kind of
- 59:03cool. It's a pretty cool one.
- 59:05It is. It is.
- 59:06It's just that it's, it is, this is OK.
- 59:11I'm, I'm, I have to go off on a Faf for a second.
- 59:14This is so cool that it makes me fucking mad because it proves
- 59:18that the writers have the capacity to do cool.
- 59:20Shit to make a cool Ranger. On brand that feels correct, not
- 59:24fucking cartographer. Something that feels game
- 59:28changing and like conducive to narrative play, right?
- 59:34They can do it. They've proven with this that
- 59:37they can do it, and they made Ranger of all things fucking
- 59:40cool. Give us more.
- 59:45I. Find I want and I need to know
- 59:49who is the one who's holding them back and I want that person
- 59:52to hit with a brick about Ranger specifically about all the
- 59:55classes, about making them cool and feel on brand.
- 59:58I want to find this person. I will pay someone to hit them
- 1:00:01with a brick every time they walk into the fucking Wizards
- 1:00:04building. I.
- 1:00:08The, The funny thing about Ranger is I, I feel like Ranger
- 1:00:13subclasses are an equal amount of cool and shitty.
- 1:00:17You know, like you have Beastmaster, which is like, I
- 1:00:22want it to be cool, but isn't that cool?
- 1:00:25But you also have Drake Warden, which is fucking sick and like
- 1:00:28you, hey, Faye wanderer, which is like, man, it's all right.
- 1:00:31But you have gloom stalker, which is pretty sick.
- 1:00:34You have horizon Walker, which is OK, but like Hunter's pretty
- 1:00:36cool. You know what I mean?
- 1:00:37Like. Yeah.
- 1:00:39Swarm keeper is a little weird but like monster Slayer I'm in
- 1:00:45you know? It's so 5050 with Ranger it
- 1:00:50feels like. Yeah, it just.
- 1:00:53We are right, like the thematic energy, the the the concept of
- 1:01:00like what this Ranger should be and then the mechanics that it
- 1:01:02has feel like they line up pretty well right.
- 1:01:06The the the eerie aura causing causing fear and increasing
- 1:01:10damage is good. The strangling roots because
- 1:01:14you're this weird like eldritch forest being so you're causing
- 1:01:17the plants to wrap around shit like sick yes, love that.
- 1:01:21I mean, the, the the unnerving aura forcing them to, to have to
- 1:01:29make like limiting their actions because they're like bothered by
- 1:01:34you. And and they could have just had
- 1:01:36it given the the frightened condition.
- 1:01:41But I like that they made it a different thing, you know?
- 1:01:44Yeah, I like that it's not just the frightened condition.
- 1:01:49The ancient armor feels very on brand because you're covered in
- 1:01:52the vines and leaves and shit to protect you.
- 1:01:54This is very this feels like it's intended to be a very melee
- 1:01:57focused hunter Ranger also. Oh also they get an ability
- 1:02:02called timeless where they're just immune to the exhaustion
- 1:02:05condition. Just totally immune.
- 1:02:07Can't get tired. Just not like crazy of powerful
- 1:02:12but a fun thematic thing. Yeah, yeah, like it it, It is a
- 1:02:16fun Ranger like. Also the the persistent hunt is
- 1:02:20cool because you can they're kind of vibing on the wild hunt
- 1:02:23idea of like you're just this eternal hunter.
- 1:02:26They even they mentioned it with like the oh God I can't I never
- 1:02:30remember his name. The guy who does the the
- 1:02:33interviews. Oh.
- 1:02:37I feel so bad, I like that guy so much.
- 1:02:39They could do with the glasses. Yeah, I know who.
- 1:02:40You're talking about Yeah, Yeah. Yeah, why can't I think of his
- 1:02:42name either? Todd Kendrick.
- 1:02:45Todd Kendrick. Yes, he, he brought it up.
- 1:02:47He was like Norse mythology. And my, my immediate thought was
- 1:02:49the Wild Hunt. So, yeah, actually, so you know
- 1:02:52what this reminds me of? It's a little too magical, but
- 1:02:54this feels like the Van Helsing, like Van Helsing the 2008 movie
- 1:02:59with with Hugh Jackman Van Helsing.
- 1:03:03Like obviously it's way more magical.
- 1:03:06It's just like, 'cause you're like the Ranger of the forest
- 1:03:08hunting the monsters. Like you just feel like this,
- 1:03:13you know, trench coat wearing fucking trench coat.
- 1:03:16You know, you feel like the dude with the wide brimmed hat who's
- 1:03:19out there to like, stalk the forest.
- 1:03:21And. Kill the evil monster you feel
- 1:03:23it's it's a little aloo card, you know?
- 1:03:25Yeah, I see what you're saying. Yeah, I did just have the idea,
- 1:03:30as you were saying that, of playing a a Oh God.
- 1:03:36What's the species? The the reborn.
- 1:03:39Yes, the reborn plus this Ranger.
- 1:03:42That would be cool. Actually OK a a better
- 1:03:44comparison. This feels very vampire hunter.
- 1:03:48DI have not watched that anyway. Oh.
- 1:03:50You would love that. You're the Tim Burton guy and
- 1:03:53you haven't seen vampire Hunter Dean?
- 1:03:54I have not. I know it's one of those ones
- 1:03:56I've always heard about and haven't.
- 1:03:58Seen. Oh dude, it's so it's I.
- 1:04:01I feel pretty confident knowing what shit's up your alley at
- 1:04:03this point. I yeah, I've heard, I know it's
- 1:04:06an edge fest, which, yeah. It's not even edge, it's just
- 1:04:09it's gorgeous to look at. It's all fucking gothic and like
- 1:04:13the best way possible. Dee's like a Chad.
- 1:04:17He's got like a weird mouth, his hand that talks shit to him.
- 1:04:19It's great. Did you not know about the tumor
- 1:04:23mouth hand? I didn't, no.
- 1:04:25I'll find a picture while you're talking about the phantom.
- 1:04:28Well, I was going to, I was just going to say the the idea of the
- 1:04:31the reborn hunter, but instead of being instead of being like a
- 1:04:36zombie person, you're like a person who died in the forest
- 1:04:39and turned into like a weird tree being.
- 1:04:42And then you're this what hunter who stalks around like this
- 1:04:45Ranger who stalked around the forest is the weird magic tree.
- 1:04:48Like he didn't. A subclass is good when you look
- 1:04:53at the subclass and it gives you a bunch of character like ideas
- 1:04:56right away. That means.
- 1:04:57You look at and go, yeah, I have something like, again, that's
- 1:05:00for me with the the undead companion.
- 1:05:02I I looked at it and went no I understand now.
- 1:05:05Yeah, yeah, You immediately. Like, I have an idea for this.
- 1:05:07That's good. Yeah.
- 1:05:10So then we have the Rogue Phantom.
- 1:05:11So this one's another reprint. It says it came from Tasha's
- 1:05:18Cauldron, but I thought the phantom came from Van Richten's.
- 1:05:23Let us see row 24, Phantom Tasha's called, Asha's Cauldron,
- 1:05:29everything. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:05:31Maybe it was reprinted in Van Richten's.
- 1:05:34Maybe. Oh that that hand homunculus is
- 1:05:38awful looking. What the fuck?
- 1:05:39It's. Really gross, isn't it?
- 1:05:44Here I can let me check. All right, so the Phantom Rogue,
- 1:05:52as we said, reprint. Some rogues walk along the veil
- 1:05:56between life and death, shepherding opponents to the
- 1:05:59grave and slipping through the world as undetectable as a
- 1:06:02spirit. In these pursuits, a rogue might
- 1:06:04discover a mystical connection to death itself, such as an
- 1:06:07individual, or such an individual becomes immersed in
- 1:06:11negative energy, infusing their strikes with definitely energy
- 1:06:14and stealing knowledge from souls who have passed on.
- 1:06:17Thieves Guild Rogue Thieves guilds value rogues at this
- 1:06:20persuasion as highly effective information gatherers and spies.
- 1:06:23Basically, you're a rogue who talks to dead people, and that
- 1:06:25gets extra cool powers from the dead people.
- 1:06:30In terms of changes, Whales from the Grave now links its number
- 1:06:35of uses to the rogue's DEX mod. Tokens of the Departed now
- 1:06:38provide soul trinkets whenever you finish a long rest, allowing
- 1:06:42for more reliable usage of this benefit.
- 1:06:44Which I do understand because before the way it worked is you
- 1:06:47need something to die within. I think it was within 30 feet of
- 1:06:50you, which is somewhat limiting. I'm actually going to double
- 1:06:55check tokens of the departed when you as a reaction when you
- 1:07:05can, when a creature you can see dies within 30 feet of you.
- 1:07:08Yeah. So Voices of Death is a new
- 1:07:13feature that allows you to cast Speak with Dead, and Death's
- 1:07:16Friend now let you gain a soul trinket when you roll initiative
- 1:07:19if you have no soul trinkets. So Whales from the Grave, when
- 1:07:25you deal a sneak attack, you can deal another sneak attack
- 1:07:29basically to another creature within 30 feet of the first one.
- 1:07:33Roll half the number of sneak attack dice for your level
- 1:07:36roundup and the second creature takes to chronic damage equal to
- 1:07:38the rolls total as whales of the dead momentarily sound around
- 1:07:43them. Whispers of the dead.
- 1:07:45When you finish a short or long rest, you can choose one skill
- 1:07:48or two proficiency you lack and gain it as a ghostly presence
- 1:07:52shares its knowledge with you. You lose this proficiency when
- 1:07:54you use this benefit again or choose a different one.
- 1:08:00Tokens of the Departed at level 9.
- 1:08:04Tokens of the Parted is kind of their their main shtick, which
- 1:08:08is a little annoying because you get it at level 9, but whenever
- 1:08:15you finish a long rest you gain 2 soul trinkets.
- 1:08:17Each soul trinket is a tiny object.
- 1:08:19The DM determines the trinkets form or has you roll on the
- 1:08:22trinket table. These trinkets last until you
- 1:08:25finish another long rest, at which point they disappear or
- 1:08:28disintegrate. If you ever move more than 30
- 1:08:32feet from a trinket, the trinket immediately teleports to you,
- 1:08:34appearing somewhere on your person.
- 1:08:35The number of soul trinkets you gain when you finish a long rest
- 1:08:38increases when you reach 13th level and 17th level.
- 1:08:40It goes from 2:00 to 3:00 to 4:00.
- 1:08:44What can you do with them? When you deal Sneak Attack
- 1:08:48damage on your turn, you can expend a Soul trinket and
- 1:08:50immediately use Whales from the Grave without expending a use of
- 1:08:53that feature. That expended trinket is
- 1:08:55destroyed, so it gives you an extra one Life's Essence.
- 1:08:58When you have at least one Soul trinket, you have advantage on
- 1:09:00Death saving throws and con saving throws, which is cool
- 1:09:03'cause not many things give you Death saving throw advantage.
- 1:09:06That's a pretty rare ability, so that's a fun one.
- 1:09:11Spirit Curry. When you take the magic action
- 1:09:13to expend a soul trinket and immediately cast the augury
- 1:09:16spell requiring no spell components and use your dex mod
- 1:09:20as the spell casting modifier, the spell the trinket is expand
- 1:09:24is the expend. The expended trinket is
- 1:09:29destroyed. That was a tongue twister
- 1:09:31apparently. Also when a creature you can see
- 1:09:35within 30 feet, if you dies you can still do the reaction to
- 1:09:39regain 1 expended soul trinket. So you can still do the sole
- 1:09:42steel thing, which is cool, but you can also do it on a long
- 1:09:45wrist so you have a little more flexibility on that.
- 1:09:47This is one of those things where this is kind of the caveat
- 1:09:50to what I generally believe about making things harder
- 1:09:54because like the, I don't know, this just feels different than
- 1:10:00the finding corpse parts, right? You know what I mean?
- 1:10:03Like if you wanted to as the artifice, or you could like go
- 1:10:07to the graveyard and rob some graves, and that's how you could
- 1:10:08make your homunculus thing. But this very specifically
- 1:10:11requires murder. So the fact that they give you a
- 1:10:14couple more options to get them. So you're not like shanking
- 1:10:17hobos because like that's something you definitely don't
- 1:10:19want, right? Just mindless killing for your
- 1:10:22class features, no good. So it it feels like they
- 1:10:26recognize that that could be an issue and we're like, OK, we
- 1:10:28will. We will sort of make things
- 1:10:30easier this time in a way that is conducive.
- 1:10:33Yeah, that being said, it is D&D, so having something die
- 1:10:36within 30 feet of you is not that.
- 1:10:38Hard no. But this is like the you know,
- 1:10:41if you're doing water deep, right?
- 1:10:44Right. You don't want the hobo shanker
- 1:10:46of the party. True, yeah, at level 9 you get
- 1:10:51Voices of the Dead. You can cast Speak Speak with
- 1:10:54Dead once without a spell slot, requiring no components, and
- 1:10:57using your dex mod as the spell casting modifier.
- 1:10:59Which is. I know why they're doing it.
- 1:11:02It just feels weird to be like my Dexterity make me good at the
- 1:11:04magic. Yeah.
- 1:11:06I mean, this is this. We talked about this a while
- 1:11:08ago, right? Of like it's a.
- 1:11:09Mechanical thing. It's fine.
- 1:11:10Yeah, it's fine. It's kind of funny, I.
- 1:11:13Feel like now that we have the DND movie I expect and I'm
- 1:11:18looking you, I'm looking out there fucking GMs. I'm looking
- 1:11:20at each of you in the eyes. If you make speak with daddy
- 1:11:24useless knowing that we have the DND movie to go off of.
- 1:11:28True fuck you personally. I mean I'm so tired of seeing
- 1:11:33fucking Reddit stories about or arch posts about speak with that
- 1:11:36being a useless spell. It doesn't need to be if your GM
- 1:11:39isn't dumb. Yeah.
- 1:11:41I mean, don't be dumb. Yeah.
- 1:11:46You regained the ability to cast the voice with dead.
- 1:11:49When you finish a short or long rest level 13, you get ghost
- 1:11:55walk. I I don't think they had this
- 1:11:58one before. Or did they hold?
- 1:12:00Well, they did. They did.
- 1:12:03Nevermind. Yeah.
- 1:12:05You see, you assume a you go you you, you activate your best
- 1:12:09Danny Phantom impression and you go ghost for 10 minutes or until
- 1:12:14you end it. Once you use this feature, you
- 1:12:17can't use it again if there's a long rest or unless you expend
- 1:12:21and destroy one of your soul trinkets from the tokens of the
- 1:12:24pardon. You gain flight.
- 1:12:28You can fly for you gain fly speed of 10 feet and can hover
- 1:12:33attack roles have disadvantage against you because you're going
- 1:12:36ghost. You're incorporeal and
- 1:12:38incorporeal movement. You can move through occupied
- 1:12:40spaces as if they were difficult terrain.
- 1:12:42If you end in that space, you take some force damage.
- 1:12:46Unfortunately, you can't fire your ghost hand lasers like
- 1:12:49Danny Phantom. Missed opportunity.
- 1:12:52Yeah. Death's Friend at level 17, your
- 1:12:58capability when you use your Whales from the Grave feature,
- 1:13:01you could deal necrotic damage to both the 1st and the second
- 1:13:04creature. That's fine I guess.
- 1:13:07It's OK. Yeah.
- 1:13:09Draw of Death. When you roll initiative, you
- 1:13:11regain one soul trinket for your tokens of the Departed if you
- 1:13:15have none. Also, it's OK, Capstone's a
- 1:13:20little weak on Phantom Rogue, but it doesn't bother me too
- 1:13:26much because the rest of Phantom Rogue is good, so I can kind of
- 1:13:29let it go, you know? Yeah, and you got to let
- 1:13:31something slide. Yeah, every time I think about
- 1:13:35Phantom, I've made this joke on podcast before.
- 1:13:37I just think of the At the Emperor detect speech device
- 1:13:39when Magnus summons the little like spectral version and he's
- 1:13:42just like, I'm a girl. Such a dumb bit but it makes me
- 1:13:48laugh every time I hear it. Correct is dumb bit then we have
- 1:13:51Shadow Sorcerer, or Shadow Sorcery as it's now called
- 1:13:57because they renamed all of the sorcerers to something.
- 1:14:04Sorcery. Your innate magic comes from the
- 1:14:06Shadow Fell itself. You might trace your lineages,
- 1:14:09your lineage to an entity from the place.
- 1:14:11Or perhaps you're exposed to the Shadow Fell sinister energy and
- 1:14:14we're transformed by your shadowy magic.
- 1:14:17Allows you to command darkness on death and woe with ease, blah
- 1:14:19blah blah. This one is also a reprint from
- 1:14:22Xanathars, which again was basically 10,000 years ago.
- 1:14:28Eyes of the Dark. Thank God for eyes of the dark.
- 1:14:33Yeah, Eyes of the Dark now also grants you blind sight and the
- 1:14:36ability to see through darkness of any spell you cast, because,
- 1:14:40hilariously, you could just blind yourself.
- 1:14:43Before. How is that?
- 1:14:46That's a crazy. Fucking oversight.
- 1:14:49The fact that shadow monk and shadowy and shadow sorcery you
- 1:14:54could not see into your own darkness, how does that gum
- 1:14:58about? Slight slight footnote on that
- 1:15:03one. So the original wording was when
- 1:15:06you reach third level you learn the darkness spell, which
- 1:15:09doesn't count against sorcerer spells known.
- 1:15:11In addition, you can cast it by spending two sorcery points or
- 1:15:15by expending a spell slot. If you cast it with with sorcery
- 1:15:19points, you can see through the darkness created by the spell.
- 1:15:22So you could do it on the sorcerer, but it required
- 1:15:25sorcery points. Why would you make that
- 1:15:28distinction? Yeah, I know he's still.
- 1:15:30Casting the fucking spell. Yeah, I, I, yeah.
- 1:15:33No, I agree. It's dumb.
- 1:15:35That one's dumb. And like.
- 1:15:38Fucking Monk doesn't have that at all.
- 1:15:40No, Monk didn't have that at all.
- 1:15:44The Shadow spells change is a new feature that provides a list
- 1:15:47of always prepared spells. Because reminder, some sorcerers
- 1:15:52had always prepared spells and some didn't for some fucking
- 1:15:57reason. If I remember correctly.
- 1:16:02Though I that still might be the Hold on, hold on, I'm going to
- 1:16:09grab my book one second. I guess I have to keep things
- 1:16:13interesting right now. No, no.
- 1:16:15Oh, never. Mind, don't worry, I'm, I'm
- 1:16:17here, but I, I, I do want to flip to sorcerer real quick
- 1:16:20because I just OK, well, I can't book book hard to flip through.
- 1:16:25Hold on, hold on. All right, Whoop, whoop page,
- 1:16:27whoop page, whoop page. Where's sorcerer?
- 1:16:29Where's sorcerer? Run 38.
- 1:16:30All right, all right, I am physically flipping through an
- 1:16:33actual physical book here. It's so we have to wait a second
- 1:16:36as I, oh, I flipped too far. So the sorcerers we got in the
- 1:16:45Player's Handbook for 20/24 were Aberrant Sorcery, which does get
- 1:16:55a spell list. We got Clockwork sorcery which
- 1:16:57does Draconic Sorcery, and then Wild Magic.
- 1:17:03OK, so wild magic does not get, you know, specific spells to it,
- 1:17:15but because it's wild magic, you effectively get access to a
- 1:17:20whole bunch of extra spells anyway because of the wild magic
- 1:17:23table. So I do kind of understand that.
- 1:17:26So it seems like they are going to generally stick with the idea
- 1:17:30that the sorcerer's subclasses now get extra spells before
- 1:17:35several of them did not for some goddamn fucking reason.
- 1:17:41OK, so we have addressed that problem.
- 1:17:45Thank God. All right, so Shadow Sorcerer
- 1:17:52was one of the ones that did not get extra spells before.
- 1:17:59We're once again weird oversight that.
- 1:18:03They for some reason they were under the impression sorcerer's
- 1:18:07didn't need the extra spells even though all the other spell
- 1:18:10casters get like subclass specific spells.
- 1:18:13I don't know, whatever Spirits of Ill Omen, which was formerly
- 1:18:19Hound of Ill Omen, now uses the Summon Undead spell.
- 1:18:26That's. I mean that's mostly fine
- 1:18:28because the Hound had a bunch of specific rules and shit on it
- 1:18:31anyway, so like that's not a huge deal.
- 1:18:33Yeah, annoying that we're relying on spells again, but for
- 1:18:35what it is, this is more tolerable.
- 1:18:37Normally that would bug me, but in this case I kind of get it.
- 1:18:40Yeah. Because the hound was a little
- 1:18:43like, not amazing Umbrell form, which is their capstone now
- 1:18:48gives you one free use of the form per long rest.
- 1:18:51Strength of the grave has been improved and moved to the
- 1:18:54benefits of this form. I don't remember what that
- 1:18:56ability did. So we're gonna, we'll get there
- 1:18:58in a second. All right.
- 1:18:59So Level 3 Eyes of the dark, like we said, you have dark
- 1:19:01vision out to 120 feet and blind sight within a range of 10 feet.
- 1:19:05In addition, if a spell you cast creates an area of darkness, you
- 1:19:11could see through that spell's darkness.
- 1:19:13End of discussion. The shadow spells they get, they
- 1:19:18get at Level 3, Bane, darkness, Inflict Wounds, Pass without a
- 1:19:22trace. Yeah, it's all right, All right.
- 1:19:27Level 5, they get Hunger of Hadar Summoned undead.
- 1:19:31Good, solid ones. 7, they get Greater Greater Invisibility and
- 1:19:34Phantasmal Killer. Those are really good.
- 1:19:36Level 9, they get Contagion and creation.
- 1:19:39Contagion is a solid spell. I don't remember what Creation
- 1:19:41does on top man. Creation it.
- 1:19:46It's similar to Fabricate. It lets you just create a number
- 1:19:49of organic and inorganic materials.
- 1:19:52They are. They don't last forever though,
- 1:19:53so you have to kind of like make them and then immediately use
- 1:19:56them as a component or something before they go away.
- 1:19:58I think you get like 10 minutes for some things.
- 1:20:01So Spirits of Ill Omen, you can now cast Summon Undead without a
- 1:20:05material component. You can also cast it once
- 1:20:08without a spell slot, which you regain on the long rest.
- 1:20:10Whenever you start casting the spell, you can modify it so that
- 1:20:14it doesn't require concentration.
- 1:20:17If you do so, the spell's duration becomes one minute for
- 1:20:20that casting, and the spell ends early if you cast it again.
- 1:20:24That is a somebody a different subclass also got that?
- 1:20:28Or is like you can. You can forego the concentration
- 1:20:31for a limited time on the summoning.
- 1:20:34Remember who it was though, Yes. I remember that being a thing,
- 1:20:37but I also do not 100% remember. It might have been Draconic
- 1:20:41Sorcerer, I'm not sure. That's good.
- 1:20:46I mean, that's fine. Yeah, I'm fine with that.
- 1:20:48Replacing the Hound of Ill Omen. I will say Spirits of Ill Omen
- 1:20:54doesn't sound as cool as Hound of Ill Omen.
- 1:20:57It does not. But the way I mean the way it
- 1:21:00Hound Deville the Hound works. Before as a bonus action, you
- 1:21:06spent three sorcery points to summon a hound of ill omen to
- 1:21:10target to target one creature you can see within 120 feet of
- 1:21:13you. The Hound uses direwolf stats
- 1:21:16with the following changes. It's size medium, not large.
- 1:21:19It counts as a monstrosity, not a beast.
- 1:21:21It appears with 10 pit points, equal to half year sorcerer
- 1:21:24level. It can move through other
- 1:21:25creatures and objects as if they were difficult to reign.
- 1:21:28The hound takes 5 force damage if it ends in turn inside an
- 1:21:31object. At the start of its turn, the
- 1:21:32hound automatically knows its target location.
- 1:21:36If the target was hidden, it is no longer hidden from the hound.
- 1:21:39So you do kind of miss out on the the hound sniffing people
- 1:21:43out thing, but other than that the summon undead pretty much
- 1:21:48covers the same basis. That does suck.
- 1:21:52That's good flavour. But yeah, it's.
- 1:21:53Fair, that is good flavour of the hound being able to like
- 1:21:56find hidden enemies. I I do kind of like that someone
- 1:22:01undead are I'm actually going to pull up some of them dead real
- 1:22:03quick. Some curiosity undead spirit
- 1:22:07blah blah initiative. Yeah, what's the undead spirit
- 1:22:09like? Stat block got festering or oh
- 1:22:14that's right, the undead spirit. You can make the ghost or the
- 1:22:16putrid has grey bolt rod and cloud.
- 1:22:21Yeah, make a calm save any creature the new starts its turn
- 1:22:26within 5 feet of it. The creature is poisoned or the
- 1:22:29ghost pass through the creature and objects.
- 1:22:32If it ends its turn inside the object to just shunted to the
- 1:22:35nearest occupant space. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:22:39So you missed out on the tracking thing, which is a
- 1:22:41little unfortunate, but other than that it is, I would say, a
- 1:22:44little more versatile. And then you get the shadow
- 1:22:49walkability at level 14, when you're in dim light or darkness,
- 1:22:52you can use a bonus action to teleport.
- 1:22:55That's the same. And then you have Umbral form.
- 1:23:00As a bonus action, you adopt A shadowy form.
- 1:23:03Gain the benefits below for one minute or until you have the
- 1:23:07incapacitated condition. I will just little little side
- 1:23:13thing. I do kind of understand why, but
- 1:23:15I feel like calling incapacitated a condition is
- 1:23:19just a little funny. I don't know.
- 1:23:23No, yeah, I mean because you have the unconscious
- 1:23:26incapacitated 2 separate. No, I don't even mean that.
- 1:23:30I just think it's a funny sentence to be like you got the
- 1:23:32dead condition, bud, you know, like you know, like it's just, I
- 1:23:36don't know, just well, they. They made incapacitated a little
- 1:23:38more like cohesive because you can like talk now, like you can
- 1:23:42sort of sure do things, that's true.
- 1:23:45Whereas before you're just sort of like a having a seizure,
- 1:23:49being completely useless to the world.
- 1:23:51Right. Once you use this feature, you
- 1:23:54can't use again to finish a long rest unless you spend 6 sorcery
- 1:23:58points, which at level 18 you have.
- 1:24:05Oh, you have, oh that's right, Sorcery points are 1 to 1.
- 1:24:06So you have 18 sorcery points, so 6 is not that much.
- 1:24:10In corporeal movement, you can move through occupied spaces if
- 1:24:12they're difficult terrain. You can do the ghost thing.
- 1:24:15You have resistance to shadowy resilience.
- 1:24:17You have resistance to all damage except force and radiant.
- 1:24:22That's pretty good. You're not going to be getting
- 1:24:24hit with a lot of force and radiant damage very often.
- 1:24:27And then strength of the grave, if you would drop TO0HP and not
- 1:24:31die outright, you can make a charisma save.
- 1:24:33DC is 5 plus half the damage taken if you succeed your hit
- 1:24:38points. Instead, change to a number
- 1:24:40equal to three times your sorcerer level.
- 1:24:43That's not terrible. Comma.
- 1:24:46However, DC of five plus half the damage you're taking.
- 1:24:51At level 18, you're taking some pretty chunky hits.
- 1:24:55Yeah. So that's going to be kind of a
- 1:24:56tough DC to beat sometimes I feel Not like impossible 5 plus
- 1:25:06half, like not impossible, but you do take some pretty chunky
- 1:25:08hits. So I don't know, that might be a
- 1:25:10little hard to beat sometimes. So Shadow.
- 1:25:12Sorcerer. Honestly, the biggest upgrade is
- 1:25:17the shadow spells, the additional spells.
- 1:25:20That's the main thing. The Hound of a Hill Omen is
- 1:25:23like, you lost something, you gained something, it became
- 1:25:26spirits. OK, that's fine.
- 1:25:29And then Umbra Form got a slight upgrade.
- 1:25:33Yeah, so Shadow Source was fine. Then we get to the last.
- 1:25:40The last subclass is Hex Blade Warlock.
- 1:25:43Not the last one, we get undead underneath it.
- 1:25:47I forgot about undead warlock. Yeah.
- 1:25:50Hex blade warlock though. This is my utter disappointment.
- 1:25:57Kind of a weird, yeah. First of all, I didn't think we
- 1:26:03were going to get Hexblade Warlock.
- 1:26:05That was my first thing, right? Like I thought Hexblade was off
- 1:26:09the table because of the changes to pack to the blade and stuff
- 1:26:12and and the way that some of the invocation changes, I just
- 1:26:16didn't expect to get Hexblade back, but we did.
- 1:26:21And it's, it's not terrible, but it's definitely different.
- 1:26:29It's just if if Rangers, you know.
- 1:26:32It's. Just Captain Hacks.
- 1:26:34Yeah, it's Captain. Heck, it is like.
- 1:26:37It kind. Well, here's the thing.
- 1:26:38It was kind of Captain Hex before, but now they have leaned
- 1:26:42into it further. Yeah, well, I mean they haven't
- 1:26:45solved the problem that the hex spell isn't very good other than
- 1:26:50that. Like, the extra damage is good,
- 1:26:51that's fine, but it still has this annoying rivet ability that
- 1:26:55is practically speaking. I'm not going to say it's
- 1:26:58useless, but it's not very useful.
- 1:27:02Yeah, so changes. You get the hexploid spells
- 1:27:09formally expanded spell list. Now it gives you a list of
- 1:27:12always prepared spells. These spells have been grant.
- 1:27:15The spells granted have been revised.
- 1:27:18They did this with all the warlocks.
- 1:27:20Warlocks now get free spells which they technically didn't
- 1:27:22before. I think a lot of people assumed
- 1:27:24warlocks got free extra spells with their subclasses.
- 1:27:27They didn't. They got the option to pick
- 1:27:30those spells. They did not get them for free
- 1:27:32before. Which is crazy because literally
- 1:27:34everyone else got their spells for free.
- 1:27:35Yeah, they had. It was.
- 1:27:36It was an active thing you had to do, which is.
- 1:27:38You had to decide. Goofy.
- 1:27:40Such a weird choice. It was like you can pick from a
- 1:27:42few more things but you don't just get them.
- 1:27:44But like what? Hex Blade Manifest is a new
- 1:27:47feature allowing you to cast a hex number of times a spell
- 1:27:50slot. It also grants you a handful of
- 1:27:51unique ways to interact with your cursed target.
- 1:27:55Life Stealer is a new feature that interacts with the Hex
- 1:27:57spell to provide healing and reliable damage.
- 1:28:00Armor of Hexes now now more reliably reduces damage taken.
- 1:28:05Masterful Hex is now a feature that boosts the power of the Hex
- 1:28:07Blade manifest. I will say one thing, I think
- 1:28:11it's funny. It's called Hex Blade.
- 1:28:14Nothing in the subclass specifies that you need a blade
- 1:28:17of any kind. Yeah, you know, Yeah, they they.
- 1:28:22Talk about it a lot about it being a sword.
- 1:28:24It doesn't actually a sword. It could be.
- 1:28:25It doesn't Mace a hammer. It it could be a bow, because
- 1:28:31nothing. None of them specify melee
- 1:28:33attack or a type of damage or anything.
- 1:28:36It's just an attack. End of discussion.
- 1:28:39Which is weird. So hex blade spells, you get
- 1:28:44arcane vigor, which I think is actually a new spell.
- 1:28:47You get hex, you get magic weapon shield, wrathful spike.
- 1:28:50Those are pretty good spells at Level 3, actually pretty soft.
- 1:28:53Level 5 Contra barrage is that's a choice.
- 1:28:59OK and to spell magic I Contra. Barrage is Contra barrage.
- 1:29:05Is it like the fucking anime silver chariot stabs?
- 1:29:08Is that what they were like? Well conjure barrage specifies
- 1:29:13they did change how conjure barrage works.
- 1:29:16You stick a like ethereal what? What's the word?
- 1:29:20I'm actually going to look it up.
- 1:29:21The reason I know this is because I played with the new
- 1:29:23conjure barrage when I was playing Ranak.
- 1:29:27So Conjure Barrage now says you brandish the weapon used to cast
- 1:29:32the spell and conjure similar spectral weapons or ammunition
- 1:29:38that launch forward and then disappears.
- 1:29:40So it can be you conjure a bunch of magic arrows, but it can also
- 1:29:44be you conjure spectral copies of your sword and shoot those
- 1:29:48forward. Yes, you're doing the anime
- 1:29:50million stab thing. Kind of.
- 1:29:53I imagine it like you're doing the Red Mage and Final Fantasy
- 1:29:5514 thing where you summon the fleshet swords and they shoot
- 1:29:59out and stab the opponent like magic swords.
- 1:30:02That's what I think of. So yeah, Contra braj and spell
- 1:30:04magic. Contra bra is a little weird.
- 1:30:06Freedom of movement I guess. And staggering smite.
- 1:30:12At level 9 they get animate objects.
- 1:30:17I'm assuming to animate swords like to make dancing.
- 1:30:21Blues and then steel Windstrike I I I guess animate objects is a
- 1:30:25weird one, but sure the little. Three.
- 1:30:28That's one of my favorite spells.
- 1:30:29Steel Windstrike is awesome because you just turned into
- 1:30:31Virgil. Level 3 you get the hex blade
- 1:30:36manifest, Hex blades curse. You can cast hex without
- 1:30:40expending a spell slot a number of times equal to your charisma
- 1:30:43modifier, which is good 'cause you're a warlock, so obviously
- 1:30:46you're very limited on spell slots, and you regain all
- 1:30:48expended uses when you finish a long rest.
- 1:30:50When you cast hex, A spectral weapon resembling your patriot
- 1:30:54orbits the cursed patriot. Your patron orbits the cursed
- 1:30:59target. Weird little add on they threw
- 1:31:02there, but sure. Xplead maneuvers once per turn
- 1:31:06when you hit a cursed target with your hex.
- 1:31:10What? Once per turn when you hit a
- 1:31:11target cursed by your hex with an attack roll, Any attack roll
- 1:31:16you can cause one of the additional effects, Draining
- 1:31:20Slash. The target makes a Con save
- 1:31:22against your spell save DC. On a failed save, the target
- 1:31:25can't make opportunity attacks and it's speed.
- 1:31:27Just have until the start of your next turn.
- 1:31:29Sure, all right, fine. Harrowing Blade.
- 1:31:31The target makes a Wisdom save against your spell save DC on a
- 1:31:34failed save the next The next time the target makes an attack
- 1:31:38roll against a creature other than you before the start of
- 1:31:41your next turn, the target takes to chronic damage equal to your
- 1:31:43Charisma modifier. Stymieing Mark The target has
- 1:31:48disadvantage on your next saving throw it makes before the start
- 1:31:51of your next turn on the next saving throw.
- 1:31:54So you can actually debuff saving throws now with Hex Blade
- 1:31:58specifically. Oh no, you could do that before.
- 1:31:59Actually, nevermind could do that before 'cause it they added
- 1:32:04the extra rider to the hex spell that it gave to to say this.
- 1:32:10I do like the hex play maneuvers.
- 1:32:12I like that you can make a choice to decide how you want to
- 1:32:17implement it. That's cool.
- 1:32:18I'm I'm a fan of that. Let's see what else we got here.
- 1:32:24Life Stealer whenever a target cursed by your hungering hex
- 1:32:29Whenever a target cursed by your hex drops to 0 HP, you regain
- 1:32:32hit points equal to D8 plus your charisma modifier.
- 1:32:34I think that's better healing, isn't it?
- 1:32:42You can cause. Oh that's right, they had that
- 1:32:45weird accursed spectre ability where they could make a spectre
- 1:32:47out of a dead body. Before, that was not very
- 1:32:50useful. Did they not wait?
- 1:32:55Could they not life steal before?
- 1:32:56Couldn't they life steal before? Am I tripping?
- 1:32:58That was. Maybe that was from the hex
- 1:33:05spell that I'm thinking of. No, it wasn't the next spell.
- 1:33:07I think it was an. It was an invocation.
- 1:33:10Well, maybe that's what it was. Inevitable Blade is the other
- 1:33:13one from level 6. Once per turn, you can make an
- 1:33:17attack roll against the target cursed by your hex and and miss.
- 1:33:22What? Oh, if you make an attack roll
- 1:33:24against the target cursed by your hex and you miss, you can
- 1:33:27deal necrotic damage to that creature equal to your Charisma
- 1:33:30modifier. So you can just deal some
- 1:33:31guaranteed damage once per turn if you miss, Which is that's
- 1:33:36cool, I like that, it's a fun little touch.
- 1:33:39Armor of Hexes when you take damage at level 10.
- 1:33:43Armor of Hexes you take damage from a cursed target of your
- 1:33:45hex. You can take your reaction to
- 1:33:46reduce the damage taken by an amount equal to 2D8 plus your
- 1:33:49Charisma modifier. You can use this feature a
- 1:33:51number of times equal to your Charisma modifier and regain
- 1:33:54uses on a long rest. And then last.
- 1:33:56Really. You have Masterful Hex at level
- 1:34:0014. A cursed hex, Any critical rule,
- 1:34:04any critical role attack you make against a cursed target
- 1:34:07gets a crit on a 19 or a 20 infectious hex.
- 1:34:11When you use one of your hex plane maneuvers, you can target
- 1:34:14an additional creature within 30 feet of the cursed target.
- 1:34:16The additional target takes AD 6 to chronic damage and Resilient
- 1:34:20Hex taking damage can't break your concentration.
- 1:34:25So they're really leaning into your hex.
- 1:34:29You hex the guy and then you can do all this extra shit when you
- 1:34:33hit him. I, I'm, I'm a little bit of two
- 1:34:40minds on this one. Like on one hand, I, I get it,
- 1:34:47it opens up some of the options for how you could play a hex
- 1:34:51blade, but it does feel like you've lost a little bit of the
- 1:34:55flavour of the hex blade and you don't get any of the armor
- 1:35:03proficiency or the melee weapon. And it, it's still called hex
- 1:35:07blade, but you don't actually have to use a blade in any
- 1:35:10sense. That's really weird to me.
- 1:35:12I don't know, it feels a little messy right now.
- 1:35:15Is that is that how you're feeling?
- 1:35:19Yeah, yeah. Like it.
- 1:35:22It did some things that I like, not what I expected, but that's
- 1:35:28not even that true. Like it has battle master
- 1:35:31maneuvers now, which I'm just like kind of again, like sort of
- 1:35:36classes are getting more like abilities if they're melee
- 1:35:38focused. But again, it just still steals
- 1:35:40from the Battle Master, makes that feel less unique.
- 1:35:44Oh, they're not really. They're not maneuvers the way
- 1:35:47that the Battle Master has them, though.
- 1:35:48They're pretty different. No, I mean they're closer to
- 1:35:51maneuvers in the way that like the barbarian has them.
- 1:35:55Kind of. Yeah, I guess that's true.
- 1:35:57It it's really just the the massive reliance on hex that I'm
- 1:36:01like a little frustrated. By it is a it is an over.
- 1:36:06It does feel like an over, Yeah, 'cause Hex Blade, before the
- 1:36:09previous incarnation of Hex Blade, leaned into the hex and
- 1:36:13the blade part in equal parts it felt like, whereas now it's like
- 1:36:17just about the hex it almost and all.
- 1:36:19But they kept it. I feel like they should rename
- 1:36:21it to, I don't know, Hex warrior or something.
- 1:36:25Yeah. Keeping the name blade in there
- 1:36:27really bugs me. I don't know why that bugs you
- 1:36:29so much, but it does. And then the hex armor.
- 1:36:32The armor of hex's thing. Before, if the target cursed by
- 1:36:37your hex blade's curse hits you with an attack roll, you can use
- 1:36:39your reaction to roll AD 6. On a four or higher, that hit
- 1:36:43misses you. Now it's just reducing the
- 1:36:45damage. I don't know, that's similar
- 1:36:54enough. I suppose it's 2D8 plus your
- 1:36:56charisma modifier reducing the damage.
- 1:36:58Like, sure, that one's fine. I suppose.
- 1:37:02It's weird. It's like they kind of are
- 1:37:04implying they still want this to be a melee warlock, but not
- 1:37:08100%, you know? Like they're still leaving it a
- 1:37:11little open-ended on if you want to focus melee or not.
- 1:37:18So yeah, you don't really know what to make of it.
- 1:37:23I don't know, like I like the manoeuvres.
- 1:37:31Yeah. I guess it is just the over
- 1:37:32reliance on the hex spell itself that feels frustrating.
- 1:37:38Yeah. That's really what it is for me.
- 1:37:39It just kind of. There's like too much based on
- 1:37:43one spell, you know? But that being said, as a
- 1:37:47warlock, you get pretty limited spells, so throwing out a spell
- 1:37:51and then getting a whole bunch of stuff out of it kind of makes
- 1:37:54sense to a point, right? Like there's a logic there.
- 1:37:59I kind of see it. OK now.
- 1:38:03The last one is the Undead Patron, which is another
- 1:38:06reprint. This one is also from Van
- 1:38:08Richten's guide. You've made a pact with a
- 1:38:12creature that defies the cycle of life and death, a powerful
- 1:38:15lich, a vampire, or some or other entity of undeath.
- 1:38:19Having once been mortal themselves, these ancient
- 1:38:22patrons know first hand the pass of ambition and the routes past
- 1:38:25the doors of death. They eagerly share their profane
- 1:38:27knowledge, along with other secrets, with those who work
- 1:38:29with the with those who work their will among the living.
- 1:38:35So with the undead. This is the warlock from Van
- 1:38:39Richten's. That's about, you know, undead
- 1:38:41things. Undead spells.
- 1:38:45Same as with the Hex Blade and all the others, you now get
- 1:38:47extra spells like you should have.
- 1:38:49Grave Touch now allows your spells and attacks to ignore
- 1:38:52resistance to necrotic damage, which makes sense given the way
- 1:38:55that resistance has sort of changed.
- 1:38:56Because we're taking magical damage out of this game.
- 1:39:00Necrotic Husk no longer requires an action to use a secondary
- 1:39:03feature or reaction, and it restores you to a number of hit
- 1:39:07points equal to 10 times your Charisma mod.
- 1:39:10And then Superior Dread is a new feature that improves your form
- 1:39:13of dread, allowing you to fly, regain hit points, and improve
- 1:39:16your spell casting. I feel like you would have liked
- 1:39:20the flying one quite a bit in our campaign.
- 1:39:23Yes, I I would have. It would have made all of the
- 1:39:26bullshit I had to do to get flying a lot.
- 1:39:30Easier now wouldn't it? Substantially easier.
- 1:39:33Yeah, y'all don't get it? I, I'm, I did, I worked on my
- 1:39:39undead warlock because I was like, OK, I need him to have the
- 1:39:42grim Reaper vibe. It's got to be perfect.
- 1:39:44I need like my dark Angel wings that I can fly with and I the
- 1:39:47military and went, I can't fly. And then Josh was like, oh,
- 1:39:51well, you can fly in certain situations for free.
- 1:39:53And I was like OK good, but not all situations that I still have
- 1:39:55to work on this. Yeah, also a little little
- 1:40:04little side. Interesting we got 2 Warlock
- 1:40:06subclasses. I just realized.
- 1:40:08That, yeah, I mean, I'm not that surprised Warlock is supposed to
- 1:40:12be the creepy, you know? True, true.
- 1:40:15Good point. So form of dread, which is
- 1:40:19you're turning into your dreadful patrons avatar thing as
- 1:40:22a bonus action, you turn into an avatar, blah, blah, blah,
- 1:40:25gaining the benefits for a minute until you have the
- 1:40:27incapacity addition. Transform a number of time.
- 1:40:29Make sure your charisma out of fire.
- 1:40:31Yeah, yeah, yeah. OK.
- 1:40:32In fact, similarly of life, you gain temporary hit points equal
- 1:40:36to 1D10 plus your Rollock level and then Frightful avatar.
- 1:40:38You have immunity to the frightful condition.
- 1:40:40Additionally, once per turn, when you hit a creature with an
- 1:40:43attack roll, you can force it to make a Wisdom save.
- 1:40:46On a failed save, the target has the frightened condition.
- 1:40:49Bing, bang, boom. All right, undead spells, they
- 1:40:51get to blindness and deafness at level.
- 1:40:53These are the Level 3 spells. Blindness, deafness, false life,
- 1:40:56fantasible force ray of sickness.
- 1:41:00All pretty good. I've always hated the word the
- 1:41:03the spell name. Blindness.
- 1:41:05Deafness. Yeah, it's not a great name.
- 1:41:08Just call it deafen or blind like blindness, slash deafness.
- 1:41:12Just that doesn't feel like right because all these spells
- 1:41:15are are they are a wizard. Universe.
- 1:41:18Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. He's like, I will name this
- 1:41:20blindness deafness. So it blinds them and deafens
- 1:41:23them. No, it it like you can choose.
- 1:41:26You could choose. So why not?
- 1:41:27So why isn't it blindness or deafness?
- 1:41:28Well, there's a slash. How do you say A slash?
- 1:41:31Well, you don't. You just kind of know that it's
- 1:41:32that it's there. This is a terrible name.
- 1:41:37I just imagined Morden Kanen talking to, like, the wizard who
- 1:41:41invented the spell, and he's like, bro, you got to come up
- 1:41:44with a better name. Oh, yeah.
- 1:41:45What do you call your spells? Morden Kanan's magnificent
- 1:41:48mansion. All right.
- 1:41:50That's a pretty good one. You're right.
- 1:41:51Right. Damn, that is pretty good shit.
- 1:41:54Shit, that's pretty good. That's pretty good.
- 1:41:57At level 5 the undead warlock gets Speak with Dead and
- 1:42:00Vampiric touch. Very funny to think about the
- 1:42:03fact that they didn't before like.
- 1:42:08Well, I think they could. Well actually I'm going to look
- 1:42:10at their old spell list expansion.
- 1:42:11Could they choose those two? They could choose Speak with
- 1:42:18dead but not vampiric touch. Level 7 they get death ward and
- 1:42:24phantasmal killer and then level 9 they get anti life shell and
- 1:42:27cloud kill. Hell yeah cloud kill.
- 1:42:31Funny enough they used to get phantom steed.
- 1:42:34They don't get phantom Steed anymore.
- 1:42:36And it's a bit of a shame. It's a good 1A.
- 1:42:38Little bit level 6 Grave Touch. You get an ability called Arcane
- 1:42:43Necrosis when you cast a spell or hit a creature with an attack
- 1:42:46roll and deal with a chronic damage.
- 1:42:49The damage dealt ignores resistance and then you.
- 1:42:53Additionally, once per turn when you cast a spell that deals
- 1:42:55damage while in your form of dread, you can change the spells
- 1:42:57damage type to necrotic. That used to be reaction to turn
- 1:43:01it into necrotic damage, which is kind of a dumb thing to burn
- 1:43:04your reaction on. Yeah, I'm happy that it just
- 1:43:07sort of does it now, yeah. Undead Endurance.
- 1:43:10You don't gain exhaustion levels from dehydration, malnutrition,
- 1:43:13or suffocation in the distance. You don't need to sleep, and
- 1:43:16magic can't put you to sleep. Level 10 that that one's
- 1:43:20unchanged. Level 10 you get Necrotic Husk.
- 1:43:23You have resistance to necrotic damage while using your form of
- 1:43:26dread. You have immunity necrotic
- 1:43:28damage, which is cool. Shame necrotic doesn't come up
- 1:43:31that much. Unholy resuscitation.
- 1:43:36When you drop TO0HP and don't die outright, you cause your
- 1:43:39body to erupt with deathly energy.
- 1:43:42Each creature of your choice in a 30 foot emanation originating
- 1:43:45from you makes a Con save against your spell save DC,
- 1:43:48taking a chronic damage equal to 2D10 plus your warlock level on
- 1:43:51a failed save or half on a success.
- 1:43:53Your hip points then change to 10 times your charisma mod and
- 1:43:56you gain 1 level of exhaustion. Once you use this benefit, you
- 1:44:01can't use again until you finish a long wrist.
- 1:44:06Yeah, basically you die. You explode when you die is the
- 1:44:09crux of that one. That's that was the same as
- 1:44:13before. I think the only thing that
- 1:44:15changed is you get more HP back when you pop up now.
- 1:44:20Yes. And then at level 14 you get
- 1:44:24superior dread. What was their old level 14
- 1:44:26ability? Actually no, I'm checking you
- 1:44:28got spirit protection. So the old one.
- 1:44:34As an action, you can project your spirit from your body.
- 1:44:38The body you leave behind is unconscious in the state of
- 1:44:40spending animation. Your spirit resembles your
- 1:44:42mortal form, replicating game stats but not possessions, any
- 1:44:45damage or other effects, yada yada.
- 1:44:48Your spirit can remain outside your body for an hour or until
- 1:44:52your concentration's broken. With the projection ends, your
- 1:44:55spirit returns to your body, blah blah blah.
- 1:44:57While projecting, your spirit and body gain resistance to
- 1:45:01pledging, piercing, slashing. When you cast the spell
- 1:45:03Conjuration, Necromancy School. The spell does require verbal
- 1:45:06somatic components. You have a flying speed, you can
- 1:45:08clear walking speed and can hover.
- 1:45:10You can move through creatures like a ghost.
- 1:45:11Otherwise, you take the forest damage thingy if you stop.
- 1:45:15You take the forest damage thing if you stop in the same space as
- 1:45:17something else while using your former dread once during each of
- 1:45:21your turns. When you deal with a chronic
- 1:45:22damage to a creature, you regain hit points equal to half the
- 1:45:24amount of your chronic damage step.
- 1:45:28Yeah, that was kind of a weird one, huh?
- 1:45:30A bit. Yeah, so now the new one, Level
- 1:45:3414 is superior Dread. You have a flying speed equal to
- 1:45:37your movement speed, and you can hover.
- 1:45:39Cool. When you cast a warlock spell
- 1:45:41from conjuration or necromancy school school, you can cast it
- 1:45:44without verbal, somatic, or material components, except for
- 1:45:46the material components that are consumed by a spell and vitality
- 1:45:50siphon. Once per turn, when you deal
- 1:45:51with a chronic damage to a creature, you regain hit points
- 1:45:53equal to your Charisma affair. So basically they took the
- 1:45:58Spirit Projection 1 and just made it a little less clunky and
- 1:46:00a little more straightforward. They upgraded your form of
- 1:46:07dread, which is which makes sense because the form of dread
- 1:46:10is kind of your main thing. That's the last subclass.
- 1:46:17Yeah. It seems like unjed patron, I
- 1:46:18mean, undead undead patron Warlock was already pretty
- 1:46:21solid, so it didn't need a ton of love.
- 1:46:23So a little extra love to just spruce it up a little, I'm fine
- 1:46:25with. This is kind of what I expected
- 1:46:27from Grave Domain. This is the updating that I
- 1:46:31thought we were going to get. That's fair.
- 1:46:33It is not. What we got?
- 1:46:35Instead we got that bitch spruced up spicy grave domain.
- 1:46:40We threw some spinning rims on that bitch.
- 1:46:41I don't know what you mean. Spruce stuff.
- 1:46:43She. She.
- 1:46:44She's glowing. She got the underglow, she got
- 1:46:47the LEDs and the spinning rims and the exhaust fucking pipe and
- 1:46:50the fucking, the, the, the, the tail fin thing.
- 1:46:53What's that shit's called? You know, Spoiler, spoiler.
- 1:46:57She got all that shit. Yeah, that's the, that's the
- 1:47:02subclasses we got so far. I'm curious to see what book
- 1:47:05these are going to potentially show up in.
- 1:47:08And I'm I'm basically happy with all of them.
- 1:47:14The only one I'm a little iffy on is Hexblade Warlock probably
- 1:47:17I would say. Yeah, I mean, I got no problems
- 1:47:20with them. They're not any worse, and the
- 1:47:22Ranger 1 is better than any of the other ones, so yeah, fuck
- 1:47:26it. Fair.
- 1:47:27I mean I could see an argument for maybe the hex blade one
- 1:47:30being worse quote UN quote in some way.
- 1:47:35Yeah, but. Not not really, but I could kind
- 1:47:39of see someone saying that, yeah, like, but like what?
- 1:47:50Oh, I was going to say, but a lot of its utility got sent into
- 1:47:53packs of the blades. So you're just going to get it
- 1:47:55and more so it's going to be better than it was before.
- 1:48:00And most people are. I know they're they're trying to
- 1:48:02have you branch out to do like packs of the chain hex blade.
- 1:48:06Let's be honest with ourselves, probably not going to happen as
- 1:48:09much as they want it to. Probably not going to happen.
- 1:48:13True, though. Yeah.
- 1:48:14And they did rework a lot of the other invocations too, so yeah,
- 1:48:17yeah. So yeah, I don't know.
- 1:48:20I don't know. I'm, I'm mostly interested to
- 1:48:22just the main thing I'm intrigued by is what book are
- 1:48:25these going to show up in? That's that's my big thing.
- 1:48:28I'm sure it will not, I'm not even going to speculate what the
- 1:48:33book could be because I'll start speculating and then I'll get
- 1:48:36myself excited and then disappointed when it's not as
- 1:48:39cool as I thought it could be. And then, you know, the usual
- 1:48:42cycle I have with five ebooks. So I'm just going to not do
- 1:48:46that. Understandable.
- 1:48:49Yeah, I mean, you know, it is nothing.
- 1:48:56Nothing. Nothing ground breaking, but
- 1:48:58nothing bad. Mission accomplished, I suppose,
- 1:49:02Wizards, you're doing the thing. And the thing, I don't know.
- 1:49:04Well, this stuff's happening. All right Wizards, I need you to
- 1:49:07remake all the all the Rangers to be as cool as this one is
- 1:49:09that. 'D be nice.
- 1:49:11Also, can we get the rest? Can we get the rest rest of the
- 1:49:15wizard subclasses please? Yeah, appreciate those two that.
- 1:49:18'D be nice. Anyway, that's been us.
- 1:49:24If you were entertained in any way, shape or form, you can give
- 1:49:28us a follow on the social medias which are in the description.
- 1:49:32Yeah. Goodbye forever.
- 1:49:36Or, as Geece Howard would say, die forever.
- 1:49:40Did it again, he did. This bit did it again.
- 1:49:42Two weeks in a row. I've been playing a lot of Fatal
- 1:49:45Fury. It's on the mind.
- 1:49:50Oh my goodness, we will have we'll have more planning in next
- 1:49:55week's episode, I promise. Nothing.
- 1:49:58OK, well, never mind then. Peace.
- 1:50:02For the fuck yes.
