Transcript
- 0:17Speaker 1: Hey, everybody, Emily body here. You are listening to five
- 0:21Speaker 1: Minute Friday from Hurdle. Good morning, Hi, what a week.
- 0:27Speaker 1: If you follow me on social maybe you're in the loop.
- 0:31Speaker 1: If you don't, I'm bringing you into it. On Wednesday
- 0:35Speaker 1: of this week, I hit a very important, beautiful, wonderful
- 0:41Speaker 1: career milestone in that my first ever cover story was released.
- 0:48Speaker 1: The story is for Marie Claire and it is on
- 0:54Speaker 1: Shelley Anne Frazier Price, who needs no introduction, but just
- 1:00Speaker 1: in case you need a reminder, She's an eight time
- 1:05Speaker 1: Olympic medalist, a five time one hundred meter world champion,
- 1:10Speaker 1: the first woman from the Caribbean to ever win a
- 1:16Speaker 1: medal in the hundred. She's unbelievable and it has been
- 1:21Speaker 1: a really special week for me. I went to Jamaica
- 1:24Speaker 1: to report this in May and have been working on
- 1:28Speaker 1: it tirelessly since then, literally until the day before this
- 1:33Speaker 1: article went live. It is something that I am not
- 1:37Speaker 1: only so proud of because it's my first cover story
- 1:41Speaker 1: and it's for Marie Claire, which is such a pinch
- 1:43Speaker 1: me moment, but bigger than that, to have this opportunity
- 1:47Speaker 1: to participate in putting a thirty eight year old mother
- 1:51Speaker 1: from Jamaica, a runner on the cover of Marie Claire.
- 1:56Speaker 1: It's wild. It's wild. It's so special to me as
- 1:59Speaker 1: a PAS fan of women in sport and of running.
- 2:04Speaker 1: It's really surreal. I was speaking on this on my
- 2:11Speaker 1: Instagram story earlier today, about the duality that comes with
- 2:15Speaker 1: a moment like this. For so long I dreamed of
- 2:18Speaker 1: getting to this destination, and what happens is that now
- 2:22Speaker 1: that I'm here, I was so worried almost I had
- 2:26Speaker 1: so much anxiety that it was going to feel differently
- 2:29Speaker 1: than I had hoped, that I had been putting all
- 2:32Speaker 1: this work to get to this mountaintop and that I'd
- 2:34Speaker 1: get here and it wouldn't feel as exciting. And what
- 2:39Speaker 1: I realized is that I'm almost happy that it took
- 2:43Speaker 1: so long to get this w to get to a
- 2:46Speaker 1: point where I can say, at thirty seven years old,
- 2:49Speaker 1: after working as a journalist in New York City for
- 2:53Speaker 1: the better part of the last fifteen years, that I
- 2:57Speaker 1: have finally accomplished something that was on the top of
- 3:01Speaker 1: my bucket list. And when we get to a destination
- 3:06Speaker 1: it can be I'll speak for my personal experience. I
- 3:09Speaker 1: don't want to lump us all into this category, but
- 3:11Speaker 1: easy to neglect the celebratory period, and I promised myself
- 3:17Speaker 1: that this was as big of an accomplishment as any,
- 3:20Speaker 1: and that I would be good at taking the time
- 3:24Speaker 1: to really sit in this feeling, to really sit in
- 3:28Speaker 1: how much work went into this, not just over the
- 3:31Speaker 1: last few months, but truly over the breath of my career.
- 3:36Speaker 1: So much energy and relationship building and learning has happened
- 3:43Speaker 1: to get me to this point. And even, oh my gosh,
- 3:45Speaker 1: during the execution of this, I was tested. I was
- 3:49Speaker 1: so tested. There were moments when I was writing and editing.
- 3:53Speaker 1: I stared at this document on my second edit for
- 3:58Speaker 1: a cumulative almost ten hours, going to and from Seattle
- 4:02Speaker 1: in June, and just like sweating over every particular detail
- 4:10Speaker 1: and sentence and the syntax. I so badly wanted not
- 4:15Speaker 1: only to do well by me, but to do well
- 4:18Speaker 1: by Shelley Anne. And when I refer to or talk
- 4:24Speaker 1: about wanting to make sure that I celebrate this moment,
- 4:26Speaker 1: I am consciously not thinking, Okay, what's next. Okay, that's
- 4:32Speaker 1: a lie. I am thinking about what's next, But what
- 4:34Speaker 1: I'm not doing is not taking the time I am
- 4:41Speaker 1: sitting with this. I sat down and wrote about how
- 4:44Speaker 1: I feel this morning for the better part of an hour.
- 4:47Speaker 1: I am making time after an event that I'm hosting tonight,
- 4:51Speaker 1: because that is how the world works. To go to
- 4:56Speaker 1: one of my favorite places and do what I do
- 4:58Speaker 1: after I have a big moment and have a glass
- 5:00Speaker 1: of wine and be honestly and for that conscious effort,
- 5:07Speaker 1: I am so proud of myself. I really am. And
- 5:11Speaker 1: I also just felt truly so loved and appreciated by
- 5:14Speaker 1: so many of the people that see me and love
- 5:16Speaker 1: me in my life yesterday. And I know that part
- 5:20Speaker 1: of that is not only surrounding myself with good people,
- 5:23Speaker 1: but also doing a good job of communicating just how
- 5:26Speaker 1: important this moment was and is for me. And so
- 5:31Speaker 1: I hope that you can take something from that that
- 5:34Speaker 1: you can hear me saying or stressing the importance of
- 5:39Speaker 1: taking the time to appreciate yourself and the journey and
- 5:41Speaker 1: the accomplishment right not to rush onto the next thing.
- 5:44Speaker 1: Although that mindset is entirely understandable, it also rids you
- 5:50Speaker 1: of the joy and that there is way too much
- 5:53Speaker 1: joy and fun and happiness to be had in this moment.
- 5:57Speaker 1: And I refuse to rob myself of that my listener
- 6:02Speaker 1: prompt for you this week? Are you doing that? Should
- 6:06Speaker 1: you be sitting in your feelings a little bit more?
- 6:08Speaker 1: Should you be celebrating your wins, no matter how big
- 6:11Speaker 1: or small, finding some appreciation for the journey along the way.
- 6:17Speaker 1: Think about that. And now a listener question. Hey, Emily,
- 6:23Speaker 1: just curious what do you journal about? First thing in
- 6:25Speaker 1: the morning? Lists intention for the day? Brain dump? I
- 6:29Speaker 1: would love to know. Good question. So for me, I
- 6:34Speaker 1: have had the same journaling format for some time. I
- 6:37Speaker 1: literally just brain dump, write about the past day or so,
- 6:40Speaker 1: and I aim to write one full page and then
- 6:42Speaker 1: at the bottom I write one thing I'm grateful for
- 6:45Speaker 1: from the past twenty four hours. Some days I feel
- 6:48Speaker 1: rushed or that I don't have the bandwidth for something
- 6:50Speaker 1: like this, and I'll literally just write the thing that
- 6:52Speaker 1: I'm grateful for from the past twenty four hours. But
- 6:55Speaker 1: no matter what, I'm taking the time to write something.
- 6:59Speaker 1: And it's more so because I know that it's an
- 7:01Speaker 1: act of giving to myself. I can definitely be to
- 7:05Speaker 1: do list oriented. As I said in everything else, I
- 7:09Speaker 1: was speaking on before on to the next thing, and
- 7:12Speaker 1: this is a moment of pause before the day gets rolling.
- 7:16Speaker 1: Where I am choosing me, I am choosing my mental health,
- 7:20Speaker 1: knowing that writing down something positive can really set a
- 7:24Speaker 1: good tone for the day. Now, just because you hear that,
- 7:29Speaker 1: that's what I do, you need to meet yourself with
- 7:31Speaker 1: where you're at in terms of a journaling practice. So
- 7:33Speaker 1: if you're interested in starting one yourself, really pay attention
- 7:38Speaker 1: to what feels good. Maybe it's a sentence, maybe it's
- 7:40Speaker 1: a page. Maybe it's getting a guided journal where you're
- 7:43Speaker 1: answering different prompts regularly. Whatever it is, do it because
- 7:48Speaker 1: it feels good for you, not because someone else hypes
- 7:51Speaker 1: it up. And I promise you you will stick with
- 7:55Speaker 1: that habit for much longer in the long run. Make
- 7:59Speaker 1: sure you're following along with Hurdle Over at Hurdle podcast,
- 8:02Speaker 1: I'm over at Emily Abodi another Hurdle conquered. Catch you
