- 0:00If you are a grumpy mom, always irritated, easily frustrated, then
- 0:06I have the quick attitude hack that you need, and all you do need is an
- 0:11index card and a pen and your Bible
- 0:14Lately, I've been asking ladies who are joining Convivial Circle how their
- 0:20children or husband would describe them in the middle of an average day.
- 0:26And so often they say scattered, irritated, frazzled, frustrated, upset,
- 0:35and these are not the words that we want to come quickly to mind when
- 0:41our children or husband think of us.
- 0:44And that's why they're joining Convivial Circle, to get a little bit more
- 0:47conviviality in their life, because convivial means enjoying life together.
- 0:53It's living with joy with other people
- 0:56And the atmosphere of a hospitable, convivial home does rely primarily on mom
- 1:05We set the tone.
- 1:06We are the atmosphere of our home.
- 1:09So it matters immensely if we are generally grumpy.
- 1:15It's not gonna be good for anyone in our homes.
- 1:17It's not good for us.
- 1:19And there is something that we can do about it
- 1:22I'm Misty Winkler, and you've found the Christian homemaking podcast,
- 1:26Simply Convivial, and you've found it during Organize October.
- 1:31Throughout this month, I'm releasing extra episodes about busting our bad
- 1:37attitudes and replacing them busting our bad attitudes with a quick kick
- 1:43in the pants of encouraging truth
- 1:46And so today I wanted to share one of the first steps that we love to have
- 1:53women do when they join Convivial Circle and really want to change their tone
- 2:00and change their attitude quickly.
- 2:04We call it an alignment card.
- 2:07Now, maybe you've heard about affirmations, affirmation statements, and
- 2:12at first this might sound similar to that.
- 2:16But when it comes to secular self-helpy affirmations, you're basically asked
- 2:23to make up what you want to be and then write statements as if it were already
- 2:29true, and then basically wish your way or name and claim your way into this
- 2:35truth that you have stated for yourself.
- 2:39It's very self-focused and self-generated An alignment card is
- 2:45not some kind of manifestation tool.
- 2:49It is a meditation tool, a Christian biblical kind of meditation where
- 2:56we are repeating God's truth to ourselves throughout the day regularly,
- 3:04repetitively, the same truth until it sinks in, is memorized, and able
- 3:11to come to mind or even come out of our mouths when we need it most
- 3:18It seems very simple
- 3:21but it is incredibly effective because God's word is effective.
- 3:26Even just one sentence that you write on an index card.
- 3:30And so that's what you do to make an alignment card.
- 3:33You find a verse that has jumped out at you that you would like to memorize, that
- 3:39verse that helps you get back on track
- 3:44For a full school year, I put an alignment card on my school checklist
- 3:49that had Proverbs 15:1 on it.
- 3:52"A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger."
- 4:00That was the conviction that I needed.
- 4:02That was the truth that I needed to remind myself of on the regular, and
- 4:08that I needed to shape my responses and my feelings so that I could
- 4:15change the tone of our school days
- 4:18On your homeschool checklist can be a great place for an alignment card.
- 4:22But some of the go-to places that the ladies inside Convivial Circle usually
- 4:27choose are the master bathroom mirror, especially right by your toothbrush and
- 4:34toothpaste or right by the hand soap, some place that you turn to automatically.
- 4:39The front of the microwave, the window in front of your kitchen
- 4:42sink, the fridge right at eye level, right above your coffee maker.
- 4:48We want these alignment cards to be in our face, to disrupt our patterns
- 4:56and interrupt our thoughts with truth.
- 5:00And then when we see and notice our cards, we pause, and it just takes 30
- 5:06seconds, if that, to read those words, think about it for half a second,
- 5:13maybe turn them in prayer or use them as a prompt to ask God for forgiveness
- 5:19Maybe turn it to a prayer of thanksgiving.
- 5:22But it totally changes the direction of our thoughts
- 5:28and plugs in truth.
- 5:31We're not making up statements about ourselves that we hope to make true.
- 5:36This isn't wishful thinking or manifesting.
- 5:40This is putting God's Word, God's objective truth in front of us and
- 5:46repeating it to ourselves over and over multiple times a day so that our
- 5:52thoughts are interrupted by God's truth and not our own ideas So I'll show you
- 5:59some of my alignment cards right now
- 6:02My current favorite spot is on the master bathroom mirror, and
- 6:07I have a collection of about six, but I brought two out to show you.
- 6:11I use washi tape to stick my index cards up top, and lately, I've been choosing
- 6:17at least one verse to put on my little card collection that uses the word of the
- 6:24year that I chose, and this year my word is confidence, and so I have Proverbs
- 6:30fourteen twenty-six on my index card.
- 6:34It says, "In the fear of the Lord, one has strong confidence, and
- 6:40his children will have a refuge."
- 6:43That's a truth that can interrupt whatever agendas and worries and
- 6:50concerns I have going on in my head.
- 6:52And I can remind myself of who God is and who I am in relationship to Him.
- 6:59Thank Him that in Him my children have a refuge
- 7:03Thank him that he is my confidence and my joy and my strength.
- 7:09And this takes 30 seconds But now my attitude, my thoughts
- 7:15are aligned with scripture, aligned with God's word.
- 7:20And so that's why I call them alignment cards.
- 7:23We are aligning ourselves to objective truth, objective
- 7:28reality outside of ourselves.
- 7:31We're conforming ourselves to God's word by stopping whatever we have
- 7:37going on in our head regularly.
- 7:39In my case, whenever I am getting ready, whenever I'm washing my hands after
- 7:44using the bathroom, multiple times throughout the day, - reviewing truth.
- 7:50One alignment card I kept up from last year.
- 7:53Last year, my word of the year was integrity, and I just loved
- 7:57this verse and this reminder on my mirror so much that I have kept it.
- 8:03It is Proverbs 2:7, "He stores up sound wisdom for the upright.
- 8:09He is a shield to those who walk in integrity."
- 8:13Sometimes I pick quotes or mottos as well, but always scripture
- 8:20Throughout the day, we do need a constant drip.
- 8:25We need to have longer stretches.
- 8:27We should have a Bible reading plan.
- 8:29We should be in the Word daily, consuming multiple chapters at a time.
- 8:35A Bible in a year reading program is completely doable
- 8:40It does not take that long
- 8:41You can even do it by choosing an audio Bible.
- 8:44An alignment card is not a replacement for reading all of God's Word from
- 8:51beginning to end on the regular.
- 8:54Instead, this is an additional little drip throughout the day, a reminder, a
- 9:03repetition of particular truths that we want to turn our attention toward, that
- 9:10we wanna have shape not only our thoughts, but also our actions and our choices.
- 9:15And just having it handwritten on a card that we stop and read, think about for
- 9:22just a few seconds, pray about for a few seconds, will have an outsized effect
- 9:30on our attitudes, on our demeanor, on the way we treat our family, and on the
- 9:35way that we do our work as well So if you've been unhappy at home, if you've
- 9:41been easily irritated and frustrated and you're just tired of it, you want to be
- 9:49cheerful and you just don't know how Then find a verse about joy, write it on a card
- 9:57and stick it somewhere where you will see it multiple times a day
- 10:01God will use it to help you repent, rejoice, repeat
- 10:07Speaker: Convivial Circle is here to help you not establish checklist
- 10:13systems to get it all done, but rather handle the life that God is sending
