Transcript
- 0:16Speaker 1: Good morning, happy Thursday, and welcome to Jags AM from
- 0:19Speaker 1: the Hyundai Studios inside the Miller Electric Center. I'm Brian Sexton.
- 0:24Speaker 1: John Ogier is alongside, as is coach Mark Duffner. Let's
- 0:27Speaker 1: get right into our big things. And the question this
- 0:31Speaker 1: week is, how will the Jaguars respond? First regular season
- 0:35Speaker 1: loss since last November. The fourth quarter didn't go very
- 0:38Speaker 1: well for this football team, and everyone wants to know
- 0:41Speaker 1: how it's going this week. Josh Hines-Allen in the locker
- 0:45Speaker 1: room yesterday offered this response.
- 0:49Speaker 2: Yeah, practice, we flew around today.
- 0:50Speaker 3: You know, a lot of competitive reps out there, offense
- 0:54Speaker 3: and defense. So I feel like we're responding well to
- 0:57Speaker 3: the adversity that we, you know, dealt with last week.
- 1:02Speaker 3: But we moved on and we're focused on the Patriots. And,
- 1:05Speaker 3: you know, every day is an important day for us.
- 1:08Speaker 3: And we're just looking forward to Sunday.
- 1:11Speaker 2: It's a week-to-week league, John.
- 1:13Speaker 1: The team's going to have to respond. And when you
- 1:15Speaker 1: look at the things that they have done offensively, coming
- 1:19Speaker 1: home would seem to be a great opportunity for them.
- 1:21Speaker 1: Last week, not so good, 13 points. But you look
- 1:24Speaker 1: at the previous 11 games, the Jaguars have played very well.
- 1:29Speaker 4: Yeah, they need to get back to what they were offensively.
- 1:32Speaker 4: The worrisome thing when I look at this game is
- 1:35Speaker 4: this is a tough team to get healthy against. I mean,
- 1:38Speaker 4: the Patriots play really good defense. They're really smart. They're
- 1:42Speaker 4: the kind of team that makes you play clunky. That
- 1:45Speaker 4: was sort of the Jaguars' issue last week. So there
- 1:47Speaker 4: are some teams in this league that if you play well,
- 1:50Speaker 4: you're going to beat them. Patriots, you can play well
- 1:52Speaker 4: and not beat them. So it's a great test, Duff.
- 1:57Speaker 4: It's a really, really good team that figures out a
- 1:59Speaker 4: way to win. And this Jaguars offense that has been
- 2:03Speaker 4: so smooth, don't be surprised if it's not smooth, but
- 2:06Speaker 4: they need big plays to win this game.
- 2:08Speaker 5: There's no question about that. And this defense, as you
- 2:10Speaker 5: just talked about right now, is hitting its stride. I mean,
- 2:14Speaker 5: they manhandled Pittsburgh in the game they played recently against them.
- 2:18Speaker 5: They're a team right now that pressures like crazy. The
- 2:20Speaker 5: defense will operate with three- and four- and five-man rush,
- 2:23Speaker 5: fire zones. So they try to make life uncomfortable for
- 2:27Speaker 5: the quarterback, and they've done a good job of that.
- 2:29Speaker 5: Allowed really one touchdown in the two ballgames so far.
- 2:32Speaker 5: So a very aggressive group that will be well coached.
- 2:35Speaker 1: Jaguars coming home in the offense under the quarterback, especially
- 2:38Speaker 1: the last four regular season games, has been very productive
- 2:41Speaker 1: here at Everbank Stadium. He has 15 touchdowns, 14 of
- 2:43Speaker 1: those passing touchdowns. No interceptions, and his passer rating, 134.6,
- 2:48Speaker 1: so perhaps the Jaguars' offense can get back on track,
- 2:52Speaker 1: and the Jaguars offer a strong response to last week's defeat.
- 2:56Speaker 1: In Denver, our second big thing is to.
- 2:59Speaker 5: Spread the wealth.
- 3:00Speaker 1: It's been well chronicled around here this week that Jacoby
- 3:03Speaker 1: Myers has just three targets, and Brenton Strange has just five,
- 3:08Speaker 1: while Brian Thomas, who had a couple of big drops
- 3:10Speaker 1: last week, has had eight. Perhaps it's time to make
- 3:13Speaker 1: sure that some of the other guys get involved in
- 3:15Speaker 1: the offense. The quarterback responded this way.
- 3:19Speaker 6: They're a huge part of our offense, so that's going
- 3:22Speaker 6: to be obviously important, and there's stuff everywhere. it's not
- 3:25Speaker 6: like we've been avoiding throwing the ball on the plan.
- 3:27Speaker 6: I felt like the last two weeks we've had stuff
- 3:29Speaker 6: in the plan for them. Um, so, you know, we
- 3:34Speaker 6: got a game to play Sunday and I know I'm
- 3:35Speaker 6: not going to, I'm not going to lay off the
- 3:36Speaker 6: game plan up here in front of everybody else, but, uh, it's,
- 3:40Speaker 6: it's important. And those guys are great players. And I
- 3:42Speaker 6: think that they both, I know they both understand the
- 3:45Speaker 6: role they have in our offense and.
- 3:48Speaker 1: Coach, the ball's going to go where the ball's going
- 3:50Speaker 1: to go. I mean, defenses can take guys away.
- 3:53Speaker 2: But we saw last week.
- 3:54Speaker 1: That the Broncos made a special effort to get Jalen
- 3:57Speaker 1: Waddell involved, and he provided 138 yards. You see the
- 4:01Speaker 1: targets there. How do you think the Jaguars respond this week?
- 4:04Speaker 1: Can they get Jacoby Myers involved, regardless of what the
- 4:09Speaker 1: New England Patriots do defensively?
- 4:10Speaker 5: I think absolutely. You know, really in the first game
- 4:13Speaker 5: against Cleveland, nine different people got the ball. All right,
- 4:16Speaker 5: nine different personnel guys got the football. So he distributed
- 4:19Speaker 5: the ball well. Take what the defense gives you. Not
- 4:23Speaker 5: force the ball to a certain area or a person
- 4:26Speaker 5: as far as that's concerned. And I believe, as you
- 4:29Speaker 5: mentioned a minute ago, Denver certainly made it a primary
- 4:32Speaker 5: task to get the ball to Waddle. Well, that can
- 4:34Speaker 5: help you, and sometimes it'll hurt you. I believe distribution
- 4:38Speaker 5: is right. Take what the defense gives you. We've got
- 4:40Speaker 5: the weapons. Make them count.
- 4:42Speaker 4: Yeah, I think this can be a tough thing to
- 4:44Speaker 4: analyze sometimes because when you see a target, or when
- 4:48Speaker 4: you see a guy who's only been targeted twice, you think, well,
- 4:51Speaker 4: they're not throwing to him. Well, sometimes plays are designed
- 4:54Speaker 4: to go to him, and then once the play starts,
- 4:56Speaker 4: something happens and it's not there. So nobody's trying to
- 4:59Speaker 4: freeze Strange and Myers out, but it can be tough
- 5:04Speaker 4: because Trevor, as Duff sort of mentioned, Is that his
- 5:07Speaker 4: best when he's distributing organically and not really worried about
- 5:11Speaker 4: feeding one guy? I'm not sure how you solve it
- 5:16Speaker 4: because I do think that's where Trevor's best. I think
- 5:18Speaker 4: over the course of the next three or four weeks,
- 5:21Speaker 4: you will see these numbers sort of balance out as
- 5:24Speaker 4: it happens within the course of a few games. Two games,
- 5:27Speaker 4: small sample size, but there is an element where you
- 5:30Speaker 4: want to get strange the ball because it that physicality
- 5:32Speaker 4: in this sort of game.
- 5:33Speaker 1: Well, I suppose one of the ways, John, to get
- 5:36Speaker 1: the guy you want involved is to get other guys
- 5:38Speaker 1: involved and make the defense rotate over there.
- 5:40Speaker 2: Perhaps if Brian Thomas Jr.
- 5:42Speaker 1: Catches some of those big balls last week, all of
- 5:44Speaker 1: a sudden New England has to address him and not say, hey,
- 5:47Speaker 1: let's just take Jacoby Myers out of the deal.
- 5:50Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, I think with Brian Thomas Jr.
- 5:53Speaker 4: it's incumbent on him to make those plays to make
- 5:56Speaker 4: sure defenses are still paying attention to him. As long
- 6:00Speaker 4: as he is drawing that sort of coverage, he's an
- 6:03Speaker 4: asset to this offense, even if he has a drop
- 6:06Speaker 4: or two. Will defenses continue to honor him? I think
- 6:09Speaker 4: that's the question going forward.
- 6:10Speaker 1: All right, let's wrap up big things with time to spare.
- 6:12Speaker 1: Bo Nix had plenty of it last week.
- 6:13Speaker 2: He wasn't sacked.
- 6:14Speaker 1: He was barely pressured at all. If the Jaguars can't
- 6:17Speaker 1: get to Drake May, they're going to have problems because
- 6:20Speaker 1: May is a very efficient passer and there are plenty
- 6:23Speaker 1: of weapons for him to distribute the ball to.
- 6:25Speaker 2: So, what does the head.
- 6:27Speaker 1: Coach think about the Jaguars' pressure package heading into this
- 6:30Speaker 1: weekend's game?
- 6:32Speaker 7: You're constantly evaluating your matchups, where you feel good, when
- 6:37Speaker 7: you need to. We brought some last week. They identified
- 6:42Speaker 7: them and kind of flipped the protection on us a
- 6:44Speaker 7: few times. you know, when you're on the road in
- 6:47Speaker 7: that atmosphere, they got the clock on their side and
- 6:50Speaker 7: they got the communication on their side and they freeze it,
- 6:54Speaker 7: see it, flip it, and now they're picking you up
- 6:57Speaker 7: and now you're susceptible on the back end.
- 7:00Speaker 1: John, this isn't totally dissimilar from the wide receiver conversation.
- 7:04Speaker 1: If the Jaguars could get some pressure up the middle
- 7:07Speaker 1: and perhaps take away the ability for teams to chip
- 7:09Speaker 1: and even double team the outside rushers, Josh Hines-Allen and
- 7:12Speaker 1: Trayvon Walker, it would really help.
- 7:15Speaker 4: Yeah, this has sort of become, there's a few hot-button
- 7:18Speaker 4: issues obviously this week, but this is up there.
- 7:21Speaker 2: I think it's going to be until you solve it.
- 7:23Speaker 4: I think you said before we heard from Liam, Brian,
- 7:27Speaker 4: that if they don't get to Drake May, they're in trouble. Well,
- 7:30Speaker 4: you can sort of fill in the blank. If you
- 7:32Speaker 4: don't get to any quarterback in this league, you're in trouble,
- 7:35Speaker 4: particularly these good teams that they're playing that are going
- 7:39Speaker 4: to decide the season. Denver, New England, Joe Burrow coming up.
- 7:44Speaker 4: If you don't get to these guys in the last
- 7:46Speaker 4: seven minutes, you have a hard time winning in this
- 7:49Speaker 4: league these days. To me, Duff, all the other stuff
- 7:53Speaker 4: that's out there right now, you can sort of get fixed.
- 7:56Speaker 2: You can scheme it. Defensive has to get to the quarterback.
- 8:00Speaker 4: And I think it's the huge issue in the next
- 8:03Speaker 4: few weeks to see if they can get more consistent
- 8:05Speaker 4: pass rush.
- 8:05Speaker 5: There's no question about it. I mean, that's the name
- 8:07Speaker 5: of the game. You're facing a quarterback coming into the
- 8:10Speaker 5: stadium this weekend that was the runner-up MVP, a guy
- 8:14Speaker 5: that led the NFL last year with a 72% completion rate.
- 8:19Speaker 5: You give this guy or any guy time, again, they're
- 8:22Speaker 5: going to make you pay. So pressure on the quarterback
- 8:25Speaker 5: is critical. You've got to affect the quarterback. You've got
- 8:27Speaker 5: to get him off rhythm, get him off the spot
- 8:30Speaker 5: if you have any chance to be successful.
- 8:32Speaker 2: All right, those are our big things.
- 8:33Speaker 1: When we return to Jags AM, Kai Stevens goes behind
- 8:37Speaker 1: enemy lines. And as we go to break, we inform
- 8:40Speaker 1: you or remind you that Sunday's game against the defending
- 8:43Speaker 1: AFC champion New England Patriots is presented by our friends.
- 8:46Speaker 2: At UF Health.
- 8:48Speaker 1: UF Health is the official healthcare partner of the Jacksonville Jaguars.
- 9:04Speaker 8: Welcome into Behind Enemy Lines, where we check in with
- 9:06Speaker 8: a media member from the opponent of the Jaguars. This week,
- 9:09Speaker 8: they're playing the Patriots. Of course, we're checking in with
- 9:11Speaker 8: Kendra Middleton from 98.5 The Sports Hub in Boston, and
- 9:13Speaker 8: I should give full credit. She's a Jacksonville girl and
- 9:16Speaker 8: a Jaguars fan at heart.
- 9:17Speaker 9: So, Kendra, thank you so much for joining us.
- 9:19Speaker 10: Of course. Thanks for having me.
- 9:21Speaker 11: I feel uniquely qualified to do this, but I might
- 9:24Speaker 11: have a little bit of favoritism.
- 9:25Speaker 2: We'll see. Absolutely.
- 9:27Speaker 9: You know both sides very well.
- 9:28Speaker 8: So fill us in on the offseason for the Patriots,
- 9:31Speaker 8: obviously making it all the way to the Super Bowl,
- 9:32Speaker 8: but not the finish they wanted, of course.
- 9:34Speaker 9: So what is different this season for New England?
- 9:37Speaker 11: Yeah, obviously bringing in Romeo Dobbs from the Packers and A.J.
- 9:40Speaker 11: Brown from the Steelers were the.
- 9:42Speaker 10: Big additions this season.
- 9:44Speaker 11: But the biggest thing for me, I know that it
- 9:46Speaker 11: wasn't a change, but bringing Christian Gonzalez back, not doing
- 9:49Speaker 11: a sign and trade.
- 9:50Speaker 10: Really committing to their homegrown.
- 9:53Speaker 11: Talent, I think was the biggest thing that they did
- 9:55Speaker 11: in the offseason and through two weeks.
- 9:57Speaker 10: I know they're one in one, but it's really paid off.
- 9:59Speaker 8: The defense has been so strong Christian Gonzalez getting him
- 10:02Speaker 8: long term in the secondary but also the pass rush
- 10:05Speaker 8: what they've done in the middle it feels like Mike
- 10:07Speaker 8: Vrabel he's always been good with the defense but he's
- 10:10Speaker 8: got the Patriots defense operating at another level have you
- 10:13Speaker 8: seen that success continue into the first two weeks of
- 10:15Speaker 8: this season.
- 10:16Speaker 10: Yeah, I agree with pro football focus.
- 10:19Speaker 11: I think it's maybe the best secondary in the NFL,
- 10:21Speaker 11: which allows you to commit more resources to pass pressure.
- 10:26Speaker 11: And I think that that's kind of been something that
- 10:27Speaker 11: they've relied on. Are they the most talented pass rush
- 10:32Speaker 11: in the league?
- 10:32Speaker 10: No, not by any means.
- 10:33Speaker 11: But when you have a secondary that you can trust,
- 10:37Speaker 11: you can really send your guys at them. And I
- 10:38Speaker 11: think that that's something that is kind of the bread
- 10:41Speaker 11: and butter of a Mike Rabel defense is figuring it
- 10:44Speaker 11: out even when you don't have the most available talent
- 10:47Speaker 11: but you know they're they're they're gonna give the Jaguars
- 10:51Speaker 11: some work this weekend I know that they have some
- 10:52Speaker 11: injuries we'll see how that goes for them later in
- 10:55Speaker 11: the week but it's time to step up for their
- 10:58Speaker 11: defense I think everything's gonna find their level I I
- 11:01Speaker 11: think that who both of these teams have shown they
- 11:03Speaker 11: are through two weeks will kind of be somewhere in
- 11:06Speaker 11: the middle of what we've seen.
- 11:08Speaker 9: I know people can be critical in Boston always.
- 11:10Speaker 8: The Drake May situation, is it as dire as people
- 11:14Speaker 8: make it out to be?
- 11:15Speaker 9: Is it just an offensive line? Does he feeling rushed?
- 11:17Speaker 9: How would you assess where he is currently?
- 11:20Speaker 11: I've watched the game from this weekend back, and I
- 11:24Speaker 11: think that the offensive line is better than people are
- 11:26Speaker 11: giving them credit for and better than they seem in
- 11:29Speaker 11: real time.
- 11:30Speaker 10: So I don't think that that's really the issue for him.
- 11:33Speaker 10: I think it's more a lack of confidence.
- 11:36Speaker 11: He's played a lot of really strong defenses over his
- 11:38Speaker 11: last 10 or so games, and I don't think people
- 11:40Speaker 11: are giving him enough credit for that.
- 11:41Speaker 10: He's entering his third year and To be honest, people
- 11:45Speaker 10: at home might relate to this in a way. And
- 11:48Speaker 10: when Trevor was in his third year, there was a
- 11:50Speaker 10: lot of noise. Obviously, A.J. Brown goes down.
- 11:52Speaker 11: Romeo Dobbs is probably, like I said, somewhere in the
- 11:54Speaker 11: middle of who we've seen him be the last two weeks,
- 11:57Speaker 11: but I just think he needs to slow down, take
- 11:59Speaker 11: the easy check down from time to time. And people
- 12:02Speaker 11: really just need to, he reminds me of Trevor Lawrence
- 12:05Speaker 11: and just all of that conversation and the noise around
- 12:08Speaker 11: the program, if you will, for lack of a better term.
- 12:11Speaker 10: I just think that there's similar situations.
- 12:13Speaker 11: I wouldn't want to be in anyone else's quarterback situation
- 12:16Speaker 11: in the league compared to the Patriots. They have You know,
- 12:19Speaker 11: a guy who in his second year took them to
- 12:20Speaker 11: the Super Bowl. I think people just need to chill.
- 12:23Speaker 11: Quarterbacks take a while to develop in this league.
- 12:26Speaker 10: It's OK.
- 12:26Speaker 11: I learned that lesson watching Trevor Lawrence and some of
- 12:29Speaker 11: these other young guys around the league.
- 12:31Speaker 10: People just it's he's going to be fine. It's fine.
- 12:33Speaker 11: I know that it's, you know, been a hot and
- 12:35Speaker 11: heavy season for the Patriots so far, but he's OK.
- 12:38Speaker 8: We're very well versed in the quarterback controversy made by
- 12:42Speaker 8: the media. So we understand that certainly. Looking at this matchup,
- 12:45Speaker 8: can you give me an X-factor player, somebody on offense,
- 12:47Speaker 8: somebody on defense for the Patriots that is going to
- 12:49Speaker 8: need to play really well if they want to get
- 12:51Speaker 8: a win in Jacksonville?
- 12:53Speaker 10: The offensive side, I'm going to go Romeo Dobbs.
- 12:55Speaker 11: You know, the first game against Seattle, he had some
- 12:58Speaker 11: serious major drops. It kind of reminds me of that
- 13:01Speaker 11: meme that's like, I accidentally became important at work and
- 13:04Speaker 11: it's ruining my life. He wasn't expecting to be a
- 13:06Speaker 11: wide receiver one in this offense. So I think if
- 13:09Speaker 11: the Patriots are going to be successful, that's got to
- 13:10Speaker 11: be their guy. No, you know, kind of butter fingers
- 13:13Speaker 11: for him. He's got to be a difference maker and
- 13:15Speaker 11: be a difference maker early. And then on the defensive side,
- 13:20Speaker 11: I'm going to go with a rookie Gabe Hackes. There's
- 13:22Speaker 11: going to be some injuries and a lot of questions
- 13:24Speaker 11: for the Patriots heading in to this week at linebacker.
- 13:28Speaker 11: I think it's time for the kid to make some
- 13:30Speaker 11: noise and step up and have a good game. If
- 13:32Speaker 11: the Patriots are going to be successful on the defensive
- 13:34Speaker 11: side of the ball.
- 13:35Speaker 10: I think he definitely makes some major impact for them.
- 13:38Speaker 9: All right, it's going to be a good one. Kendra,
- 13:39Speaker 9: we'll see you on Sunday.
- 13:40Speaker 8: That was behind the enemy lines as we get ready
- 13:42Speaker 8: for week three, the matchup against the Patriots.
- 13:44Speaker 9: Stay with us here on Jags AM. We'll tell you
- 13:46Speaker 9: what we can expect on Sunday.

- 14:09Speaker 1: slash Jacksonville. Welcome back to Jags AM. And we go
- 14:14Speaker 1: now to what, if it's not your favorite segment of
- 14:18Speaker 1: the Jags AM work week, it will quickly become that way.
- 14:21Speaker 1: We call it Jags Win If, and we present to
- 14:24Speaker 1: you the coach, Mark Duff.
- 14:26Speaker 2: Duff, tell us, Jaguars win if.
- 14:30Speaker 5: Thank you, Brian. I can't wait for this. I got
- 14:32Speaker 5: plenty of information for you on this one. First and foremost,
- 14:35Speaker 5: win and control the line of scrimmage. Be the more
- 14:39Speaker 5: physical and tough team. Let me give you a visual.
- 14:42Speaker 5: Think about last week. Again, the second half, first drive
- 14:46Speaker 5: of the second half against Denver. Our offense came out
- 14:48Speaker 5: and we bullied the Denver defensive line. Five straight runs.
- 14:52Speaker 5: Physical play, controlling the line of scrimmage. When you win
- 14:56Speaker 5: the run game, when you control the line of scrimmage,
- 14:58Speaker 5: now you get into winnable and manageable down and distance.
- 15:01Speaker 5: What I'm talking about is this. Win first down, second
- 15:04Speaker 5: and two. We love that call. Win second down, third
- 15:07Speaker 5: and two. We love that call. The play caller gets
- 15:09Speaker 5: the best decisions he can make on his playlist. Give
- 15:12Speaker 5: the ball to Tootin, sustain drives, protect our quarterback, and
- 15:16Speaker 5: score touchdowns. That's what you get done on offense. Now
- 15:20Speaker 5: on defense, let me give you another visual. Look at
- 15:23Speaker 5: in the second half, I believe it was, the goal
- 15:25Speaker 5: line stand. It's first and goal on the one-yard line.
- 15:28Speaker 5: They have three plays. We knock them back, they lose yardage.
- 15:31Speaker 5: That's controlling the line of scrimmage. Once again, getting the
- 15:35Speaker 5: proper down and distance, manageable and winnable calls for your coordinator.
- 15:39Speaker 5: We love second and eighth, third and tenth. Now you've
- 15:42Speaker 5: earned the right to win as far as rushing the quarterback.
- 15:46Speaker 5: So excellence as far as that's concerned. Win and rush
- 15:49Speaker 5: the quarterback. Okay, now, make the quarterback nervous. We've got
- 15:53Speaker 5: to do everything we can to affect the quarterback. That's
- 15:56Speaker 5: the 11th commandment that Moses brought down on the tablets,
- 16:00Speaker 5: affect the quarterback. Well, how do you get that done?
- 16:03Speaker 5: It's done with rushing coverage working together. Pass rush. We've
- 16:06Speaker 5: got to win the one-on-ones. As our guys rush against
- 16:10Speaker 5: the tackles and the guards, you've got to win. You
- 16:12Speaker 5: can't rely on blitz to always save your bacon, if
- 16:15Speaker 5: you will, in terms of play. So win the one-on-ones
- 16:18Speaker 5: and rush. Win the one-on-ones and coverage. Linebackers and DBs
- 16:22Speaker 5: covering the running backs, the tight ends, the receivers. Win
- 16:26Speaker 5: those right now. Rush and coverage working together. Also this.
- 16:29Speaker 5: Utilize the skies. Make the quarterback... Vision right now, cloudy
- 16:35Speaker 5: and muddy. Affect his vision, affect his decision, all right?
- 16:40Speaker 5: But don't let the skies lead to our demise. Rush
- 16:43Speaker 5: and coverage working together, affect the quarterback, make him hold
- 16:46Speaker 5: the football, get him off the spot. Again, a very
- 16:49Speaker 5: effective way to win the downs and beat this team
- 16:52Speaker 5: coming up. And the last one. Win the takeaway battle.
- 16:56Speaker 5: Get the ball back for our offense. Takeaways win games.
- 16:59Speaker 5: Number one statistic in ball that equates to winning games.
- 17:03Speaker 5: You win the takeaway battle, your percentage to win is outstanding.
- 17:06Speaker 5: We're talking about ball security for the offense. Again, they
- 17:09Speaker 5: work on it in practice, bring it to the game.
- 17:11Speaker 5: That means don't throw it to the opponent. That means
- 17:14Speaker 5: double trouble, cover it up when you're in traffic right now,
- 17:17Speaker 5: protect the ball, protect it. That's going to be critical
- 17:19Speaker 5: for us. Defense, get the ball off him. We do, again,
- 17:22Speaker 5: the best takeaway drills in ball. Punch, pull, rip to
- 17:26Speaker 5: get the ball off the guy. Again, establish field position,
- 17:29Speaker 5: get the ball off him as far as that's concerned,
- 17:31Speaker 5: critical components to win. And the last thing, hey, playmakers,
- 17:36Speaker 5: step up. Make the plays you're supposed to make.
- 17:39Speaker 1: Duff, 11th commandment. I don't know about everyone else, but
- 17:42Speaker 1: I got an idea. How do you feel about a beard.
- 17:44Speaker 2: A staff, and a cloak next week?
- 17:46Speaker 5: Well, I can't equate being like Moses. He's done way
- 17:49Speaker 5: better things than me, but I'll try.
- 17:51Speaker 1: You have things to say, no doubt. Let's go back
- 17:53Speaker 1: to the very top, and that's controlling the line of scrimmage.
- 17:56Speaker 1: This team did in week one. It did not in
- 17:59Speaker 1: week two. So where are they at this point, right?
- 18:03Speaker 1: I mean, are they what we saw against the Browns?
- 18:05Speaker 1: Are they what we saw against the Broncos? Or are
- 18:07Speaker 1: they what we saw in both?
- 18:09Speaker 5: No, they're what we saw against, in my opinion, the Browns.
- 18:12Speaker 5: The fourth quarter was really the thing that got to us,
- 18:14Speaker 5: and I think we got stunned a little bit. We
- 18:16Speaker 5: got hit a little bit, and we were surprised maybe
- 18:19Speaker 5: about it, and it distracted us. Because really throughout the game,
- 18:22Speaker 5: like I mentioned, the drive that we had, I mean,
- 18:25Speaker 5: we controlled the line of scrimmage. We did a lot
- 18:26Speaker 5: of positive things. The drive we had to open up.
- 18:29Speaker 5: The second half, the two-minute drive before the end of
- 18:33Speaker 5: the half in the first half. Are you kidding me?
- 18:35Speaker 5: Tremendous stuff. So, again, we got a little distracted, for
- 18:38Speaker 5: lack of a better word, or rattled, shall I say.
- 18:40Speaker 5: We'll get back on track this week.
- 18:42Speaker 4: Duff, I like the make-may because I think that's really
- 18:46Speaker 4: the key to the whole thing, including turnovers. I guess
- 18:53Speaker 4: you already said it, but how important is it to
- 18:56Speaker 4: get those turnovers, to get pressure on a quarterback right now,
- 18:59Speaker 4: that has shown a little bit of a tendency to
- 19:01Speaker 4: throw the ball to the other team in the last
- 19:02Speaker 4: few games.
- 19:04Speaker 2: Early, I guess, is when you got to get pressure on.
- 19:06Speaker 5: No question about that. And their goal is to start
- 19:08Speaker 5: fast too. This guy right now, again, has looked to
- 19:12Speaker 5: me a little bit uncomfortable in the first two games
- 19:14Speaker 5: of this season. A guy that we mentioned earlier, 72% completion,
- 19:18Speaker 5: led the NFL last year. But again, he struggled early
- 19:22Speaker 5: in games right now. We've got to make it, as
- 19:24Speaker 5: I mentioned, muddy for him in terms of where he's
- 19:26Speaker 5: going to decide to throw it. Cloud his vision, cloud
- 19:28Speaker 5: his decision. And that's rushing coverage, working together. Everybody has
- 19:31Speaker 5: a role as far as that's concerned. He's had, as
- 19:34Speaker 5: you just mentioned, he's had four interceptions this season so far.
- 19:39Speaker 5: And actually, he only had eight all of last year.
- 19:41Speaker 5: In fact, when you look at the playoffs from last
- 19:44Speaker 5: year and this season, he's got eight interceptions. So he's
- 19:48Speaker 5: trending in the direction we want. where he's uncomfortable, where
- 19:51Speaker 5: he may throw us the football, where he's struggling in decisions.
- 19:54Speaker 2: You know, they brought in A.J. Brown.
- 19:56Speaker 1: They made the trade with Philadelphia to bring in a
- 19:58Speaker 1: guy that Mike Vrabel knew well from his days in Tennessee.
- 20:01Speaker 1: And early on, the game against Seattle, it looked like
- 20:03Speaker 1: they were going to force feed him the ball. He
- 20:06Speaker 1: left the game. He is on injured reserve with a
- 20:08Speaker 1: high ankle sprain. So do you think Hunter Henry is
- 20:10Speaker 1: their top target at this point, the tight end? I
- 20:12Speaker 1: know they've got Romeo Dobbs, and I know he was
- 20:14Speaker 1: a very good player in Green Bay, but it would
- 20:16Speaker 1: seem a quarterback who's nervous, who wants to get rid
- 20:18Speaker 1: of the ball, might want to go to his tight end.
- 20:21Speaker 5: Brian, you're dead on, brother. I mean, that's amazing. Great,
- 20:24Speaker 5: great revelation by you. He said that Hunter Henry is
- 20:28Speaker 5: his safety blanket. He's his go-to guy. And he demonstrated
- 20:31Speaker 5: that in the game against Pittsburgh last week. But Dobbs, Douglas,
- 20:36Speaker 5: they've got a number of guys, the receivers out of
- 20:38Speaker 5: the backfield in terms of Henderson, Stevenson. They've got weapons
- 20:41Speaker 5: across the board as far as that's concerned. But good
- 20:45Speaker 5: pickup by you, Henry being maybe his safety blanket.
- 20:48Speaker 4: Final thing on the control line scrimmage deficit. Jaguars offensive
- 20:53Speaker 4: line against the Patriots defensive front. I'm of the opinion
- 20:57Speaker 4: that even a very good offensive line can have trouble
- 21:01Speaker 4: against this Patriots front. Why is the Patriots front so
- 21:05Speaker 4: good defensively?
- 21:06Speaker 5: John, you're, again, another great pickup. I mean, they manhandled
- 21:09Speaker 5: Pittsburgh in the run and pass game. Their defensive line did.
- 21:13Speaker 5: First of all, they've got really good interior guys. Milton
- 21:16Speaker 5: Williams inside, Barrymore inside. They have the ability to not
- 21:19Speaker 5: only knock you back, but they can get off of
- 21:21Speaker 5: blocks and make plays. and then on their edge guys
- 21:24Speaker 5: as far as that's concerned. So they are a physical group.
- 21:27Speaker 5: They believe in trying to win the line of scrimmage
- 21:29Speaker 5: like we talked about is a key for us in
- 21:31Speaker 5: terms of victory. Again, a very physical group that, as
- 21:35Speaker 5: I said before, they really, Pittsburgh had one explosive play
- 21:39Speaker 5: in the entire game. Well, that's reflective of a good
- 21:42Speaker 5: defense starting with the line of scrimmage.
- 21:44Speaker 2: All right, Jaguars and Patriots, come your way.
- 21:45Speaker 1: One o'clock kickoff on Sunday from Everbank Stadium. And we
- 21:50Speaker 1: have much more ahead on Jags AM. And there's much
- 21:53Speaker 1: more ahead for you as a Jaguars fan. Visit Publix
- 21:57Speaker 1: on Tuesday from 6 to 7. The Publix at 13170
- 22:01Speaker 1: Atlantic Boulevard. You'll meet some players of the Jags as
- 22:04Speaker 1: well as Jacksonville and members of the Roar for a
- 22:07Speaker 1: special appearance. Publix, where shopping is a pleasure. We're back
- 22:10Speaker 1: with Monday's headlines today to wrap up Jags AM on
- 22:15Speaker 1: a Thursday. Well, Monday's headlines today is brought to you
- 22:22Speaker 1: by GEHA, Government Employees Health Association. We've reached the moment
- 22:28Speaker 1: in our show where we try to look ahead and
- 22:30Speaker 1: predict what the headlines might be on Monday morning around
- 22:34Speaker 1: the Jaguars game on Sunday. And I'll start first. We'll
- 22:38Speaker 1: go with style points. I say that we see some
- 22:41Speaker 1: style from a stylish Jaguar. That would be Travis Hunter.
- 22:45Speaker 1: He's been the story all week long. I think he
- 22:47Speaker 1: gets a touchdown this week. I don't know what side
- 22:50Speaker 1: of the ball it's on, but I know there will
- 22:51Speaker 1: be some flair by number 12, so we'll go with
- 22:54Speaker 1: style points. I think the Jaguars find a way to
- 22:57Speaker 1: get a win on Sunday at home, a place where
- 22:59Speaker 1: they have been very successful. Four consecutive home wins for
- 23:02Speaker 1: this football team. They were 7-1 last year at home,
- 23:06Speaker 1: which matches the all-time franchise record of home wins in
- 23:10Speaker 1: a single season, matching the 1999 team. Duff, what you got?
- 23:14Speaker 5: Home sweet home. I have. Jaguars R & R. And
- 23:18Speaker 5: what I mean by Jaguars R & R, I mean
- 23:21Speaker 5: respond and rebound. In other words, this team right now
- 23:25Speaker 5: had a tough fourth quarter, had a tough loss, a
- 23:27Speaker 5: one score loss. I think they realize they're better than that.
- 23:30Speaker 5: They let one get away. We want to have a
- 23:33Speaker 5: chance to choke a team out. We choke them out.
- 23:35Speaker 5: So I see them right now, R & R, rebound and.
- 23:39Speaker 1: And that guy there, Trevor Lawrence, would seem to be
- 23:41Speaker 1: the key to it.
- 23:42Speaker 5: Without a doubt, always is right now. And again, I
- 23:45Speaker 5: feel like, again, he understands some of the things that
- 23:47Speaker 5: he struggled with in this game, and he'll come back
- 23:49Speaker 5: and correct them.
- 23:50Speaker 4: Yeah, I think there's something to what you guys are
- 23:52Speaker 4: saying in terms of Trevor playing at home has been
- 23:55Speaker 4: really good lately.
- 23:56Speaker 2: I went with a grimy good day.
- 24:01Speaker 4: Liam likes to call this team a grimy getty team,
- 24:04Speaker 4: and I think he's right.
- 24:06Speaker 2: Patriots are grimy too.
- 24:07Speaker 4: Oh, yeah. I think if they're going to win, they're
- 24:11Speaker 4: going to have to play this gutty sort of game
- 24:15Speaker 4: that the Patriots force you to play.
- 24:17Speaker 2: The thing that worries you about the Patriots, they don't
- 24:19Speaker 2: give you games.
- 24:21Speaker 4: And even if they get down, they don't panic when
- 24:26Speaker 4: they're down and sort of make it easy to pull away.
- 24:28Speaker 4: The Browns maybe did that a little bit, right? So
- 24:32Speaker 4: if you're going to win, you have to win. They
- 24:34Speaker 4: force you to play their style. So the Jaguars have
- 24:36Speaker 4: to win in a way maybe they haven't won a
- 24:38Speaker 4: whole lot I think it's a very good test for
- 24:41Speaker 4: this team in that regard.
- 24:42Speaker 1: Do Mike Vrabel's Patriots remind you of his Titans? Do
- 24:45Speaker 1: they play a similar style? I mean, they don't have
- 24:46Speaker 1: the same sort of players.
- 24:47Speaker 4: I think if you changed uniforms, you wouldn't know the difference.
- 24:53Speaker 4: Only because he wants to get to the fourth quarter,
- 24:58Speaker 4: and then once he gets to the fourth quarter, he
- 25:00Speaker 4: wants to make you make plays that you don't want
- 25:03Speaker 4: to make to win. I guess every team sort of
- 25:05Speaker 4: does that, Duff, but they're really good at it.
- 25:07Speaker 5: Well, I think he does an excellent job of fundamentals
- 25:10Speaker 5: and technique are the basis of everything that they do. Again,
- 25:13Speaker 5: they're not going to beat themselves, as you just mentioned.
- 25:16Speaker 5: They're going to make you beat them as far as
- 25:18Speaker 5: that's concerned.
- 25:19Speaker 2: That's hard to do. It's harder to do than it sounds.
- 25:21Speaker 5: They're not going to give plays away.
- 25:22Speaker 2: I just want to give one final thought.
- 25:23Speaker 1: Jeff Lagerman did a video this week that's out on
- 25:25Speaker 1: social media about Devon Hamilton and the way that he played.
- 25:28Speaker 2: In the middle of the line.
- 25:30Speaker 1: I bring it up because it's critical. We saw Travion
- 25:32Speaker 1: Henderson rip up the middle of Pittsburgh's defense. And again,
- 25:35Speaker 1: 33 years of covering the.
- 25:36Speaker 8: Steelers, too.
- 25:38Speaker 1: I have never seen the Steelers' defensive line look as
- 25:42Speaker 1: disheveled as they did on that particular run. It was
- 25:45Speaker 1: wide open. Devon Hamilton, the way he's playing right now,
- 25:48Speaker 1: all but guarantees you're not going to see that kind
- 25:50Speaker 1: of a run against this team.
- 25:51Speaker 5: There's no question about that. And, I mean, again, I
- 25:53Speaker 5: think that, boy, I can't say enough for Devon Hamilton
- 25:57Speaker 5: and the play he's given our football team. You know,
- 25:59Speaker 5: week after week, you talk about the word consistency, that
- 26:02Speaker 5: guy's got that, and we need everybody else to employ consistency.
- 26:06Speaker 2: All right, that'll do it.
- 26:07Speaker 1: Of course, we'll have all kinds of coverage for you
- 26:09Speaker 1: starting on Sunday morning. Radio, we'll have internet, we have TV,
- 26:14Speaker 1: we've got it all. So stick with us here at
- 26:17Speaker 1: Jaguars Productions for game day on Sunday. And we'll see
- 26:21Speaker 1: you Monday. To wrap it all up, thanks to our
