Transcript
- 0:09Hi, good afternoon. Welcome, Miller and Condon.
- 0:12On a Monday, it's the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 0:16Trent Condon, Ken Miller. We're situated at Des Moines
- 0:19Sports station 106.3 KX&O. We're going to talk sports with
- 0:22you for the next couple of hours.
- 0:24And thank you for starting your afternoon here with us.
- 0:27Here's what's coming up on our program.
- 0:29At the bottom of the hour or thereabouts, we'll hear from
- 0:31Scott Dockerman from The Athletic.
- 0:33He covers college football, bowl projections, playoff
- 0:36projections, etcetera. And of course, a recap of Iowa
- 0:39and USC and other college football topics from Doc Coming
- 0:42up here at 12:30, Bama, Bob, Trent and I will take a spin
- 0:46around college football from this past weekend, recapping
- 0:49another good week of college ball.
- 0:51And then Bill Seals on Iowa State as they get back on the
- 0:55floor tonight. TJ squad, Campbells team will
- 0:58bid due to the seniors coming up on the weekend.
- 1:01He'll meet the media tomorrow, but Bill Seals will join us
- 1:04today, do some basketball and some football with Bill and then
- 1:08Mr. Monday night on the Raiders and the Cowboys.
- 1:11It's a helmet game of nothing else.
- 1:13That's that's. It.
- 1:15That's it. The Cowboys are about a 3 1/2
- 1:18point favorite on the road in Las Vegas.
- 1:21You know, if they were any good, I got to imagine that they would
- 1:23have taken over Vegas this past weekend.
- 1:25I'm not certain that they did. Well, we'll see tonight at a
- 1:28Legion Stadium. But a lot of people, that's a
- 1:30summer trip that you're planning.
- 1:31Oh, sure, there's going to be a ton of Cowboy fans.
- 1:34Yeah. And.
- 1:35There's a ton of every fan team fans.
- 1:37And the transplants and the number of people and the number
- 1:39of people I'm sure that live in Vegas that are just happened to
- 1:41be Cowboys fans because they're everywhere.
- 1:42Yeah, it's going to be a very large contingent.
- 1:45I'm going to. Guess no doubt about it, but you
- 1:47know, watching Iowa and Usci kind of had FOMO and I seldom do
- 1:51I. I've never been to the Coliseum
- 1:52and I want to get there. So let's get into the game.
- 1:55We'll get into the NFL at some point here, maybe, if not in
- 1:59segment #1 some point in our number one.
- 2:02But and what to say? Just another one right there,
- 2:05just right there, right there for the taking.
- 2:08And they left it there. It wasn't to be US CS receiver.
- 2:11So I want to ask you, and I've almost texted Leistocow and
- 2:14Cacord, who I knew were in the postgame press conference, did
- 2:17you hear Kirk's postgame press conference when he was talking
- 2:21about the receiver? And he said never seen anybody
- 2:23like him. And then he stopped and he said
- 2:26maybe with one exception. And I was wondering, 'cause I
- 2:30don't think he made it clear and I haven't seen any stories and
- 2:33he kind of left that open for A, A, a follow up or B,
- 2:37speculation. Who was the, who was the name of
- 2:39the player that popped into your head when he was talking about
- 2:43how do you refer to him #8? I think obviously the Lemonade's
- 2:47referring to six, six number six and they left it open for
- 2:52speculation. I've never seen anybody like
- 2:55him. Well, maybe with one exception.
- 2:57And then he moved. On I Believe and I listened to
- 3:00Tom's postgame podcast and he intimated that he was talking
- 3:05about David Bell. Oh, so it was a receiver?
- 3:08That yes, yeah, he was talking about the best receiver.
- 3:10OK, so I thought he was talking about best player, offensive
- 3:14player. He was just.
- 3:15Barkley came to mind for me. Yes, he was talking about a
- 3:18receiver and David Bell who absolutely throttled them.
- 3:21Yeah, and looked like a guy. Riley Moss first game.
- 3:24What a many, what a many. Well, no.
- 3:26Was Riley Moss's first game the guy against the French?
- 3:28Yeah, it was. The French did.
- 3:30You're right. Yep, you're 100%.
- 3:31Right. Stefano, Stefano, Whatever that.
- 3:33Was by the way, Riley Moss leads the NFL in DPI 9 for against him
- 3:37and #2 on. We'll get there, we'll get
- 3:39there. We'll get there.
- 3:40Relax. Good God, they hate him.
- 3:43The one that came to my. Officials go ahead.
- 3:45When my mind went first was Plaxico Burris.
- 3:49Do you remember? No, not.
- 3:50I mean, I remember his career, but I don't remember what he
- 3:53did. So that was Kirk's first year
- 3:55when they went out there and they got pulverized and they
- 3:58were down 42 to 3 and it could have been 73 to three save.
- 4:02It was a coach at Michigan State, I believe.
- 4:05And if they weren't friends, if they weren't coaches together,
- 4:08that thing could have got really ugly.
- 4:10It was that bad. They I mean you talk about
- 4:12varsity versus JV that is as bad it.
- 4:15Was it was really bad? His first year they were awful
- 4:19and that was a long day. It was an early kick off.
- 4:21We got to the Vine, We're at the Vine all day.
- 4:24It was one of those that and the conversations I remember at that
- 4:27time about Iowa football coming on the heels of Hayden, how just
- 4:31awful cratered. This wasn't against Michigan,
- 4:34who at the time was of course the program, this against
- 4:37Michigan State, you know, middling program.
- 4:39They're OK and you just look non competitive.
- 4:43They're competitive and they're competitive here today, 27 years
- 4:46later. But back to Saturday.
- 4:48But yeah, that that's the first one that came to my voice.
- 4:50But I think he was talking about David Bell.
- 4:52That's what that's what Tom, that's.
- 4:53What Tom thought. And David Bell was a.
- 4:55Killer he was. So close and many excuses,
- 4:59reasons, justifications. Whatever terminology you want to
- 5:02use, they're incredible. Size 11 is post a size 10 1/2
- 5:05and. And some of those here's the
- 5:07thing that sucked. So I'm getting these still
- 5:10pictures from buddies and I see it's on social media that shows
- 5:15his toe actually in balance if you have actually the other
- 5:18angle from the other side his. Toes out of bounce.
- 5:21The one that they showed one time, then he was out of bounds.
- 5:25But you go in that back angle, put it in.
- 5:28There's two different vantage points, two different pictures.
- 5:30So they must have seen something because they upheld the call.
- 5:33Well, that's a different conversation they did they moved
- 5:37very quickly. Wasn't a whole lot of look at it
- 5:40it. My first thought though is well,
- 5:44is that reals or AI? You don't that where we are with
- 5:49artificial intelligence and OK, yes, I see that.
- 5:52And you probably got it from social media.
- 5:53You probably got it from maybe you're just zoomed in on your
- 5:56TV, whatever it was. However, we don't know and you
- 6:00don't know what you get, what's real, what's not right and.
- 6:04But Mike Glocksley was fired. They're they're giving him
- 6:07another year that. Didn't happen.
- 6:09No, that didn't happen. You get duped.
- 6:11Now that's been around a lot longer than AI, but that was my
- 6:14thought when I started to see those pictures.
- 6:16So don't even know if it's real. Iowa cratered, Iowa turtled.
- 6:20And when you heard Kirk at half time say, Oh yeah, you know, got
- 6:26a control, here we go again. I mean, you can see it coming a
- 6:29mile. I had 2110 at the half.
- 6:30It felt like they should have been up a lot more.
- 6:32Yep. And that was my big take away at
- 6:34half time. I did 1/2 time reaction podcast
- 6:36up at Wild Rose and that was my take away.
- 6:39Fun, enjoyable. You only have 2110?
- 6:42Yeah. You got 30 minutes to.
- 6:43Go and you know what's going to be coming in the second-half and
- 6:46it's exactly what you'd anticipate.
- 6:48So here's what Iowa does. Gets the ball for the first
- 6:51time. 4 yard run, 2nd 614 yard pass, 5 yard run, 2 yard run,
- 6:57third and three run, punt next one first and 10 run.
- 7:02Get a first down, incomplete run, interception.
- 7:06Now that was the face mask that wasn't called.
- 7:08Fourth quarter, you get the ball.
- 7:10Run. But then went off his knee,
- 7:11right? Was it Gil's knee?
- 7:13Yes. Yeah.
- 7:14Run 3 yard, pass incomplete. And then the final drive that
- 7:18almost was they turtled. They played Curt ball and it
- 7:22didn't work. And he couldn't do that against
- 7:24USC. And that's where the biggest
- 7:26blame lies. You can't play that.
- 7:29You could do that against Purdue.
- 7:31You can do that against Northwestern.
- 7:32You knew that against Wisconsin, Nebraska, and even some
- 7:36Michigan. You can't do that against
- 7:37Oregon, against USC. You can't do that in the new Big
- 7:4010. Absolutely not.
- 7:42You have to play to actually outscore the team, not to hold
- 7:46on to outscore them. And they didn't.
- 7:48Blanked in the final 30 minutes, they.
- 7:49Didn't score? Yeah, they didn't score a point.
- 7:52No, that goes back to the coaches, Kirk, Lester, whoever.
- 7:58That's where it goes back to. Doesn't even try anything until
- 8:00you had to. There was a lot of game before
- 8:02that that you could have even at the end of the first half.
- 8:05And this has been something that has been happening for 27 years.
- 8:08How could they be so awful at and a half situations week after
- 8:11week, year after year. It's the same garbage.
- 8:14You need points we're. About making a mistake, I don't
- 8:16know. I think that's lingering.
- 8:19The Penn State is lingering in the back of his mind.
- 8:22But even in the first half, another three points, think that
- 8:25would have been important. Yeah, probably would have
- 8:28helped, right? Wouldn't hurt.
- 8:29It wouldn't have hurt and they didn't do it and they sat on it.
- 8:32Clocks run, could have got 3 and the way they were moving the
- 8:36football at the time, USC was on their heels and he didn't take.
- 8:39The first half they were and. He didn't take advantage at the
- 8:41end of the half, didn't take advantage and here we are having
- 8:44the same conversation again. They're close, but they're not
- 8:47good enough. No, here comes Michigan State
- 8:49and they're a big favorite against Michigan State and then
- 8:51obviously Black Friday over in Lincoln.
- 8:53They sit six and four and any slim hope that this team was
- 8:57going to be CFP bound. That balloon was burst
- 9:00Gronowski. I don't know what to make him.
- 9:02Trent. I really like him in some
- 9:05respects. He just under throws so many
- 9:07dudes. It's and and some of the worst,
- 9:09the worst moments, but yeah, you mean they open up the game with
- 9:1440 something yard pass to Gill? Did he catch another ball?
- 9:18Nope. That was it, that was it, that
- 9:19was it. Perfectly thrown ball, boy, they
- 9:23got something here. But that was it.
- 9:25That was it. Moulton ran hard.
- 9:26Patterson, I thought ran hard. Numbers didn't really show it
- 9:29for him, but just, I don't know, just wasn't to be.
- 9:32I thought the linebackers played pretty well in the football
- 9:35game. The defensive backs, they were
- 9:38there, you know, coverage was there.
- 9:39They. Just got beat by better
- 9:40athletes. They did.
- 9:41They got beat by two guys that are going to play on Sundays.
- 9:43You also got to make a play on the ball.
- 9:44I mean, you got two guys that are blanketed lemon.
- 9:47Yeah, and. They both just.
- 9:49The NFL player came down with it, Yeah.
- 9:51But they didn't go for it and this has been something that has
- 9:54also been happening a lot. They're in great position.
- 9:56Make a play, make a play on the ball.
- 9:58What? Did you think of my Ava?
- 10:00He's good. Yeah, that's what I thought too.
- 10:02And when pressure came, he just checked it up and the better
- 10:04players went up in main place because it wasn't just Lemon, it
- 10:07was Lane. Both those guys are absolute.
- 10:09Stunts I like the fact in the first half they kind of went in
- 10:12the bag of tricks the Vanderzee pass the Philly special that's
- 10:15right. It was perfectly timed.
- 10:17If we would just take one more step to play, wasn't there.
- 10:20I thought that was good. Von Amy, I thought he had maybe
- 10:22his best game as a Hawkeye. Looks like his arrow was
- 10:26pointing up. But Gil was really good.
- 10:28Then they just never threw the ball.
- 10:30Howard, the pass at the at the back of the end zone was the
- 10:33right guy to throw to. Obviously he's the biggest guy
- 10:34in the field. Tallest guy in the field.
- 10:37And shouldn't Gronhowski just run that in?
- 10:40Well, it was there wasn't. It was.
- 10:41Yeah, it was absolutely when. He threw the ball like that's
- 10:43going out the back of the end zone and credit to Howard for
- 10:46going up and making a play. Or to actually to his parents,
- 10:48because obviously that's a genetic.
- 10:50That helps too, right? I there was so much though
- 10:54through the course of the game that that was just head
- 10:55scratching the officials. You don't be an officials and
- 10:59basketball more than football. But in general, it's a loser
- 11:02excuse. It is you.
- 11:04You lost the game. The face mask was egregious.
- 11:06It was terrible. But I also got away with one in
- 11:09the end zone with Deshaun Lee. I mean, that's pass interference
- 11:12all along and it wasn't called. Was USC holding every play?
- 11:15Sure. I think you think Iowa doesn't
- 11:17hold. Right, but it was it was the
- 11:21face mask it. Was it was the face mask?
- 11:22And then what happened right afterwards?
- 11:24The interception and then USC takes a.
- 11:27Lead just when what a what a sequence right miss face mask
- 11:31under thrown ball off his knee. Bang a Trojan standing right
- 11:35there. Ball floats and finds a way into
- 11:38its hands. So we've got Oregon and USC, the
- 11:41two teams that I was facing the last two weeks and they play
- 11:44each other coming up this weekend.
- 11:45That's a fun game Trent. This not a good weekend.
- 11:47You know why it's not a good weekend.
- 11:48It's wedding weekend in the South.
- 11:50The SEC takes the week off. Well, they really don't, but in
- 11:53a way they do with the schedule that they've got.
- 11:55But that's a massive There's a few good games, but this might
- 11:58be the highlighter of mall or the headliner rather of mall
- 12:02Ducks Trojans in in Oregon. And is that a late?
- 12:07Game. No, I think it's 2:30. 2:30.
- 12:10You know what? Let me look.
- 12:11It is. CBS has it.
- 12:12Because nothing. There's I, I, I was looking
- 12:15ahead, trying to plan my weekend already.
- 12:18There's nothing at night for the Nebraska Penn State.
- 12:21No. That's about it.
- 12:24Pittsburgh, Georgia Tech. Tennessee, Florida.
- 12:27So he's a rivalry game. Right, but to here's the game.
- 12:30It's Pittsburgh, Georgia Tech, I guess.
- 12:33BYU, Cincinnati. Good.
- 12:35Cincinnati. Still, that's a good one.
- 12:36Do they have a path? Yes, to to the to the to the
- 12:40championship. To the Championship.
- 12:41And then obviously, if they win it, yeah, I mean, the winner
- 12:45probably faces Texas Tech. Yes, yeah.
- 12:51So that's an important one. It's not the shiniest.
- 12:55Not at. All for for sure and Iowa plays
- 12:58at 2:30 and Iowa State plays at 11.
- 13:00So they will stay off each other this week and obviously next
- 13:03week with the Hawks playing on on Friday in Lincoln NFL from
- 13:09yesterday I watched every single snap of your Bears and the
- 13:13Vikings. That was really off on JJ
- 13:19McCarthy. And there it is.
- 13:21I've been waiting. Yeah, I mean, obviously he had
- 13:25that nice drive again, I thought.
- 13:26They were going to do it same when.
- 13:27They took the lead, but man, I, I don't know where they turn.
- 13:33I don't know what how. Obviously you give them the rest
- 13:35of the year. Yes, absolutely.
- 13:38But is, is there going to be a tough decision to be made at the
- 13:41end of the year? I mean, he's, we got to keep in
- 13:44mind, he didn't play last year and he missed a lot of time this
- 13:48year. Whether it was hurt or not,
- 13:49There's still there's still people out there who believe
- 13:51that that they were hiding him. And when you watch him play, it
- 13:55can kind of understand why, right?
- 13:59But Caleb Williams, Trent, there's there's a few guys in
- 14:02this league that just make you jaw drop when he's escaping from
- 14:06the pocket. And Caleb Williams has an
- 14:09uncanny ability to make plays when it seems like he's
- 14:13hopelessly surrounded. This is not a very good Bears
- 14:16team. No, but they leave the division.
- 14:18They leave the division, they're not very good.
- 14:20It's not a team that's going to be doing damage in January.
- 14:23I don't. Think so.
- 14:24No, no. Yet you have something, you have
- 14:27a coaching staff and you have a head coach.
- 14:29It's easy to believe in. You know, the locker room
- 14:31speeches, for the most part, they're kind of trenchy.
- 14:34A little eye roll. Sure.
- 14:35OK. Yeah, He he plays it up, though.
- 14:39I mean, he hams it up. He's he definitely took
- 14:41something off the Dan Campbell tree, didn't he?
- 14:43And it's definitely what they do in the locker room.
- 14:45And by the way, Dan Campbell, you you've got to learn.
- 14:47You, you've got to you've got to kick around your roster.
- 14:50He was old for five yesterday. Old for five.
- 14:52Yeah, but go ahead. Sorry to interrupt you.
- 14:55He gets that team, though to believe you look at what they
- 14:59just do well the defense that isn't very good, especially some
- 15:03parts that has I I'm I'm still Cairo Santos sucks yeah I mean
- 15:09he he snuck in the game when. He did snuck it in.
- 15:11It started. Look it, it's it left his foot.
- 15:13I thought he'd missed. I I still baffled in today's day
- 15:16and age where you got this guy that can barely kick a 47 yarder
- 15:19out there trotting out there week after week, but.
- 15:20You got a 60 yarder on the on your on your practice squad,
- 15:24right Moody? Yeah, who I would take every day
- 15:27over. What didn't work in San
- 15:28Francisco? But you know what?
- 15:29A lot of kickers failed their first stop.
- 15:31And here they are leading the division.
- 15:32As he said, they're seven and three.
- 15:35And it's not just about this season.
- 15:37There's hope. There's real hope that they
- 15:40finally have it, that they have the right guy.
- 15:42Because Kayla Williams has to get better.
- 15:44I mean, he's getting better. He's getting better, but he has
- 15:46to be able to be more consistent, has to be able to go
- 15:49through his progressions before escaping because you're not
- 15:51going to survive in the NFL escaping every time your first
- 15:54read isn't there. It's not going to work.
- 15:56But the hope is real, Not for this season, but for the future.
- 16:01And that the first time in a long time, I think you can say
- 16:03that about the Bears, but this is real.
- 16:05But there's there's a finally a real foundation here with this
- 16:09organization. No, I agree with you.
- 16:11Obviously, they need some parts. They weren't scared to spend
- 16:13money last offseason. They went in, They retooled
- 16:16their offensive line. I like a lot of things about
- 16:19this Bears team, Trent. They run the ball hard.
- 16:22They do. And when the Vikings took the
- 16:26lead, they were able to. I mean the kick return was
- 16:28great, huge. Set up beautifully too it.
- 16:30Really did it Really did. Credit to the special teams
- 16:32coach for setting that up. Get up the right side, blocked
- 16:35beautifully on the left and cut back out there and then all
- 16:38right, they have a chance. They ran the ball, which is a
- 16:40little bit of surprise with Swift to set up the game-winning
- 16:42field goal on 3rd long and got what, 7 yards on that play?
- 16:45I think it was at the end there, yeah.
- 16:47That was very pretty important. 7 yards.
- 16:49Because without those 7 yards, probably sure Kyra Santos making
- 16:53that feel good. I don't think he is here.
- 16:54They are, they do do it again, the Vikings.
- 16:56It's this is the Vikings seemingly all the time, though.
- 16:59This is how I know this organization.
- 17:01You have a year, you make that jump, then they go back to and
- 17:04it's a step. Back.
- 17:05Well, back in the old days. 8:00 and 8:00 and then next year
- 17:07it'll be, oh, you know, I don't know, we'll have to see.
- 17:10And they'll surprise and they'll probably get back to the
- 17:12playoffs again. That that's what that. 1011
- 17:14games, yeah. That's what they do seemingly
- 17:16all the time. They'll bring in some veteran,
- 17:18they'll bring in some guy. We'll see.
- 17:21It'll be competition with him and McCarthy.
- 17:24McCarthy won't get the job. They'll go with the veteran and
- 17:26they'll go 10 and seven next year.
- 17:27Make. The yeah, the guy that was there
- 17:29last year, Sam Darnold, threw 4 picks yesterday in a big spot.
- 17:32Are you second guessing your? No, it's still not because they
- 17:36were still very much in that football If and he hasn't been
- 17:44able to do especially against that team, that's been their
- 17:46kryptonite because it was the Rams in the wild card game last
- 17:49year that he imploded, although the week before he did against
- 17:52Detroit, as we recall. Seahawks are good.
- 17:55Rams are good, Eagles are good. I was impressed by the Eagles.
- 18:00Again, I was, I was too. But again, I think stop going
- 18:04for it every single time on 4th down I think I.
- 18:07Figured out why it's taken me so long with the Eagles.
- 18:09What is it? They're so boring.
- 18:11They're just, it's not a fun watch.
- 18:13It's not entertaining. They're great, defensively
- 18:16great. If they're especially defensive.
- 18:18I mean, if you're talking about a unit that you in the NFC that
- 18:21you really believe in come January, there's one and it's
- 18:24that defense come January, that's the one that you can
- 18:27absolutely see. Yes, they can take them to the
- 18:29Super Bowl. There's not another unit in the
- 18:31NFCI think that you can say. Don't like the Rams offense?
- 18:33No, I mean what they have yesterday, 240 yards.
- 18:36I understand they got 4 picks and that helps.
- 18:37The defense, yeah, but you? Still have 240 yards at home so
- 18:41I I can't get there and them having to travel to weather I I
- 18:46can't get there. Or do they play each other?
- 18:49The Rams and Eagles. They played her on the yeah.
- 18:51That was the black. That's right.
- 18:52Yeah. Yeah.
- 18:53What? Rams had them week two, week
- 18:56three-week 4. Some early in the season.
- 18:58That's right. You're right.
- 18:59Don't go through Philly. They're nine and one.
- 19:01The Rams would be 9 and one right now with that one.
- 19:04But I do want to say, because I've had a lot of that this
- 19:06season, the Eagles don't see it, don't see it.
- 19:08I think it's just because I hate the Tush Bush.
- 19:12It is not fun to watch well. You know they called him for
- 19:15false starting twice yesterday which was nice to see.
- 19:18And there was another one in there that they didn't call, but
- 19:21at least they got two. It's not fun to watch.
- 19:23It's not an entertaining brain of football, and that's probably
- 19:26why I've been slower to cover out.
- 19:27But that defense is outstanding. The lines offensive line
- 19:31mentioned last week, this is going to be a problem.
- 19:33This it. Is it's been a problem all year.
- 19:35It has Frank Ragnow, their center, quit in July.
- 19:38You know that it's it's tough to find a guy out there to replace.
- 19:42I'll just go to the AFC. The Chiefs aren't dead.
- 19:47Aren't they? No, because you know what
- 19:49they're, when you look at who they've got left, they've got
- 19:54where, where are they? They're 5:00 and 5:00.
- 19:57Five and five, the teams in front of them have beat them.
- 20:01That's the problem. Well, that is Jackson.
- 20:03You're talking about tiebreakers.
- 20:04Yes, all three wild card teams in front of them right now,
- 20:06Bills, Chargers and Jaguars all have head to head.
- 20:10Now they get another chance against or have they played the
- 20:12Chargers? Twice.
- 20:13No, they haven't. They'll play in late
- 20:14mid-december and then Christmas night, Denver goes there.
- 20:18They've got a, I don't know. I don't know if this is an
- 20:20elimination game this week, but it might be the Colts against
- 20:23the Chiefs in Arrowhead early kick on on Sunday.
- 20:28Then they play Dallas, Houston Chargers, Tennessee, Denver,
- 20:30Raiders to finish the year. So one more loss.
- 20:36That's 11:00 and 6:00. Ten and seven.
- 20:39Normally you feel good 10:00 and 7:00 this.
- 20:42Year, you know what, you know what the NFL needs, you know
- 20:44that thing you find out for us and we usually get to late
- 20:47February that where you can put in the results of games.
- 20:51Bball.notnothing.net. Yeah, that one, the NFL needs
- 20:54one of those where you can kind of put it in and it'll pop it up
- 20:57for you. So it.
- 20:58Is, I believe is there ESPN has a playoff generator.
- 21:02ESPN, that's what it's called the generator, the playoff
- 21:04machine. Yeah, here we go.
- 21:06I got it right here. All right, so well, let's see,
- 21:10what if we just fire the current playoff picture and we just have
- 21:14all the favorites win? How about that?
- 21:16OK, the team by winning percentage wins the game.
- 21:19This is what it spits out in the AFC.
- 21:22The Colts the number one seed. Don't like that?
- 21:24#2 seed the Broncos, three seed the Patriots, four seed the
- 21:30Steelers and Buffalo, the Chargers and Jacksonville.
- 21:34But that's just what the standings are now projected
- 21:36forward. There's nothing else unless you
- 21:38go game by game. You could.
- 21:40Could you put in or do you have to actually put it in?
- 21:42Put it yourself. Yeah, you got it's too.
- 21:44Much work, yeah. We got a lot of football still
- 21:46to be played before we get to that to make it.
- 21:48Happen, but I don't think they're dead as much as I wanted
- 21:51to yesterday. When will let's split the
- 21:53uprights from 35 And I went bananas in my living room since
- 21:56I haven't done that since I don't know when. 10 years, Ding
- 22:00Dong. The Chiefs are dead.
- 22:02Mahomes. It's finished.
- 22:03By the way, just real quick on Mahomes, the last the last play
- 22:06when 29, the DB comes off the edge on the corner blitz and
- 22:10gets Mahomes. Did you see what he did right
- 22:12off the bat? He turns around looking for the
- 22:15official and starts patting his head like I I need a call here.
- 22:19You got hit in the head. No, he didn't though.
- 22:22Well, he's trying to sell it. I need a call here just like
- 22:25they got against Riley Moss when the pick 6 was taken back.
- 22:28He won. Are you OK?
- 22:32He drives me nuts. I know this.
- 22:35I know this. And I'm not alone.
- 22:37Even non Bronco fans, if you're a football fan you're sick of
- 22:42this guy's antics. I'm not, I enjoy watching it.
- 22:45Oh. God, I don't know how you can.
- 22:47You're all your fan of team in the NFC and he'd call here
- 22:50normally they get it. You know who else was good in
- 22:52that game? Travis Kelsey.
- 22:53Yeah, he was really good in that game.
- 22:55Fountain of Youth. Bo Nicks was OK Bo.
- 22:59He was OK, Bo. He's better than JJ McCarthy,
- 23:02I'll give him that. OK, that's where we're setting
- 23:05the. Bar he's got that one.
- 23:06Clear when he needs to make a play late in the football game,
- 23:10yeah. Fourth quarter Bo.
- 23:11He's really good and he didn't do anything in the 1st 3/4 to
- 23:17hurt his football. Team Yeah.
- 23:20He did. And then there's been plenty of
- 23:21times he. Has he?
- 23:22Has? Absolutely.
- 23:23They actually got a first down on their first possession.
- 23:27I can't tell you the last time that happened.
- 23:29And the guy that popped to me that you brought up, Pat Bryant.
- 23:32He's going to be a star, I think.
- 23:33He's really, he is. He's incredibly.
- 23:35He's still only 22. I mean, this guy we've been
- 23:38talking about the Broncos not having a number one.
- 23:40It's not going to happen. No, no, no, no.
- 23:42But going forward. Did you think in Illinois he was
- 23:45going to be he? Was good.
- 23:47Yeah, he was good. I thought he'd stick in the
- 23:49league, but what it looks like his upside might be, I didn't
- 23:52see. That when they drafted him, I
- 23:54thought, all right, this guy's got a chance and love him in
- 23:56college. But anyways, Seattle Rams, we
- 24:01talked about that briefly here. Sam Darlinsky, you can't make
- 24:06those plays. Buffalo.
- 24:07Unbelievable. Yeah, I thought they were
- 24:09cooked. I thought they were cooked as
- 24:11well. I really did.
- 24:12And the Packers do it again, Yeah.
- 24:13I, I don't know how, I, I, I don't know how other than it's
- 24:16the Giants and. That helps.
- 24:18That certainly didn't hurt. Jordan Love.
- 24:21I mean, we got Malik Willis out there.
- 24:23I know. Well, he, he got hurt.
- 24:25Malik Willis didn't look too bad at that spot.
- 24:27All right, 1225, we will get to Scott Dockerman on the other
- 24:31side. Doc covers the college football.
- 24:33We get his bowl projections. We'll get how he sees the NFL
- 24:37playoff coming up here. The college football player, I
- 24:40beg your pardon? And obviously take a look back
- 24:43at the USC and Iowa from this past week.
- 24:47Hawks are. How big of a favorite?
- 24:48Double digits is it? It's not 14, is it?
- 24:511312 I saw the opening line Saturday night was even higher
- 24:55than that's it. Let me see where we're at
- 24:58currently at 16 1/2 it is. That's a.
- 25:01Sparty's a bad football. Team Bad, still a lot of points.
- 25:05Absolutely. Here's Todd.
- 25:07Hi, Todd, How are you? Good.
- 25:10How are you guys doing? What's going on?
- 25:13Hey, I loved that little segment there where you guys went.
- 25:17I think you said the ESPN generator to get.
- 25:19To. See if the Chiefs are dead, I
- 25:22would hope that maybe you guys do this the rest of the season
- 25:24and maybe throw the Bears in there and a few other local
- 25:27teams and, and see where we're at and see who's moving up and
- 25:31who's down, who's trending what, because it might be fun to
- 25:34follow that. Hell yeah.
- 25:35I think we're on to something. We will talk because right now
- 25:39the Chiefs are the Chiefs. The Bears would host a home
- 25:41game. How about that?
- 25:43Didn't have that before. Thanks, Todd.
- 25:44Appreciate the call. Thanks for listening.
- 25:46Yeah. No, no, nobody did good stuff.
- 25:49All right, We're under way on a Monday.
- 25:51We'll get Scott Dockerman on the other side, Miller and Connor.
- 25:54And we're glad you're with us as we talk sports with you on the
- 25:57Iowa Sports Radio Network. I'm Hillary Condon, welcome back
- 26:09just past 1230 on a Monday chant and I with you until too.
- 26:12Glad you're with us. Let's get Scott Dockerman in
- 26:14here. He writes for The Athletic where
- 26:16he covers college football amongst other things,
- 26:19television, etcetera. Doc Trenton, Ken, thank you for
- 26:22coming on sports television. I should clear that up.
- 26:25Good to talk to you, Doc Appreciate you coming on another
- 26:29great weekend of college football comes and goes.
- 26:31Let's start with USC and Iowa and and just I guess the the
- 26:37skill positions when it comes to USC.
- 26:39My Ava was really good, but Lemon is as good a receiver.
- 26:44I don't know. I mean, Ohio State's got a
- 26:46pretty good one. Now there's there's a few, but
- 26:48this guy, this Lemon God character has got to be on any
- 26:51list amongst college football's top receivers.
- 26:53Would you agree? No question.
- 26:56I, I think he he and Jeremiah Smith are are 1A and 1B right
- 27:01now in the country. He is a a massive player.
- 27:04I think probably some older Iowa fans maybe have some post PTSD
- 27:10from the old Mike Williams action back in the old Orange
- 27:14Bowl in early 2003. But I think Lemon's more
- 27:18athletic. He is clearly more athletic.
- 27:21He's as good as it is there is in, in the country and, and it
- 27:25was showed I, I didn't get a chance to watch all the game
- 27:28because I was covering. I was over at Wrigley, but I, I
- 27:31saw enough of it to, to see that there was just so much.
- 27:35I mean, I was defensive backs did as good of a job as you
- 27:38could do on him. Yet he is so athletic.
- 27:41I mean, he's a pro. He's a guy who's the 1st
- 27:44rounder. He's kind of up there with like
- 27:45Roman Doones when he was with Washington and some of the
- 27:48others. So very difficult guy to cover.
- 27:51So Iowa, another close loss, is it just going to be, is that
- 27:55going to be the story of the season?
- 27:56And say they do win these last two games, They win a bowl game
- 28:00and go 9:00 and 4:00. What do you think it's going to
- 28:03be? Is the temperature They're
- 28:04close, Hey, maybe a little work in the portal says this program
- 28:08still can humble along and they can get back in playoff
- 28:10contention. Or is this going to be looked at
- 28:13and kind of that hindsight? Oh, man, that was the
- 28:15opportunity. That was the season they should
- 28:17have got there and they didn't. I want you to crystal ball a
- 28:19little bit and see what the future kind of is after the
- 28:23season finally goes to the end because they have been so
- 28:25incredibly close. I think that's up to each
- 28:29individual person. And, and because my view is
- 28:32probably going to be different than than most fans, which kind
- 28:34of swing on the pendulum. And and that is you, you have
- 28:38some groups that that probably look at this as a failure
- 28:44because you didn't get to the playoffs.
- 28:46And, and I can understand that to an extent, but I think it's
- 28:50more or less that Iowa's problem was just not getting over the
- 28:57hump and some really good games. I, I've seen some kind of funny
- 29:00memes like Iowa almost beat everybody good this year.
- 29:03Well, you didn't do that. But if they go nine and four, I
- 29:07think you look at it as a pretty decent year.
- 29:09I think it's in that second tier year, which, you know, they they
- 29:13I think they had a better team this year than they did in in 21
- 29:17or 23 when they won the divisions.
- 29:21Not as good a defense. Those defenses were, you know,
- 29:23especially 23 was is unbelievable.
- 29:26But I also think that, you know, it's sometimes you you need you
- 29:31need an offensive skill player who can kind of tilt you over
- 29:34the top. And if there's no Makai lemon on
- 29:36this team, there's no Caleb Johnson.
- 29:39I think Kamari Molt was a terrific running back.
- 29:41But sometimes you just need that difference maker probably more
- 29:44through the air. A tight end of of even and Iowa
- 29:48doesn't have the same LaPorte or Kai 11.
- 29:50So I think that's probably the difference between still being
- 29:54in in the CFP contention and now probably in the contention
- 29:58between Tampa and and Las Vegas. Yeah, and you have them, I
- 30:02believe in Tampa. In fact, I I looked at your bold
- 30:04projections doc and it was a it was a pretty intriguing match
- 30:07up. Who?
- 30:08It's an SEC team. Who was it?
- 30:11Texas. Yeah, hello.
- 30:14That would work. I mean that that would be, I
- 30:17think that would get a lot of people's attention, right?
- 30:20If that's. Yeah.
- 30:23I mean, it was and then these these matches are so fluid.
- 30:26But, you know, I think last week it was Oklahoma and Oklahoma
- 30:29winning and beating Alabama vaulted it up.
- 30:32And then Texas is, you know, loss put some down and and but
- 30:37yeah, I mean, Arch Manning versus I versus Bill Parker.
- 30:40I mean, I think that's something that ABC could sell as a curtain
- 30:43raiser to the, to the, you know, second round, the quarterfinals.
- 30:47So sure, I, I think that'd be great.
- 30:49I think if there was Vanderbilt with Diego Pavia, that would be
- 30:53a tremendous matchup. You know, if Oklahoma falls out,
- 30:58that might be a good one. I don't know that LSU would be
- 31:01in play there because, you know, they don't have a coach and I
- 31:04don't know that there's a lot of pizzazz with with LSU right now.
- 31:08But but, and then there's going to be quite a few SEC teams.
- 31:12So, you know, I, I would not put Tennessee there just because
- 31:16they've played so frequently in the Citrus Bowl.
- 31:19And then the Citrus Bowl is probably more than likely going
- 31:21to take Michigan because it hasn't taken Michigan in several
- 31:25years. And Michigan will end up
- 31:28probably with a better record than Iowa, even though I think
- 31:30Iowa is a better team. I know in your bowl projections,
- 31:34you also have Iowa State taking on Missouri, but doing so in the
- 31:37Texas Bowl, which gets cycling fans extremely hopeful that
- 31:41you're right because because their fear is they're going back
- 31:44to Memphis again. And I get it.
- 31:46I mean, the Liberty Bowl this would be, but I think the third
- 31:49time in nine years. So hopefully, hopefully they
- 31:52avoid Memphis. Sorry, Trent.
- 31:53No. I was going to say yeah, that
- 31:57would this is one of the things that the Bulls are going to have
- 32:00to get right or the leagues are going to have to get right for
- 32:02the Bulls. And this is relates especially
- 32:04to the Big 12 is the Liberty Bowl is a is a decent
- 32:09destination if you're 6:00 and 6:00 or 7:00 and 5:00 at the
- 32:12most and you want to just drive and go see a bowl game.
- 32:15It was nice like the first time Iowa State went there or maybe
- 32:17the second time, But you know, even Phoenix, which is not it's
- 32:22it's a little bit lower on the on the realm, but it's also a
- 32:27better destination. I think I was think fans would
- 32:30much rather go to play Minnesota or Northwestern out at in
- 32:34Phoenix rather than anybody else.
- 32:37You, you mentioned, since you mentioned that doc, I saw
- 32:40Poller, Jamie Poller looked like he was kind of politicking for
- 32:43that bowl in Phoenix. And I don't blame him.
- 32:46It's, it's the right bowl, right, guaranteed right bowl in
- 32:50Phoenix. How much influence do ADS have
- 32:53when they get out this far in advance of that?
- 32:55Or do they at all? They do, yeah, absolutely they
- 32:59do. They do.
- 33:00And the leagues do. And I think it's probably, and
- 33:03then Jamie's absolutely, 1000% right to do this because what it
- 33:07does is it steers influence. It kind of lets the Liberty Bowl
- 33:12know early, It lets the league know early that, you know, Iowa
- 33:16State's been there frequently. You might want to look for
- 33:19somebody else, maybe Cincinnati, maybe you know, TCU or Baylor if
- 33:23they make it there or if Kansas State even becomes eligible,
- 33:27which I think Kansas State will. I'm not so sure about Kansas.
- 33:31And I think that would be something that would feed into
- 33:34their discussions because you know, like the SEC has it right
- 33:38when it comes to this. They have like a the the Citrus
- 33:40Bowl and then they have like a six bowl tier and what the what
- 33:44they're all considered on the same level.
- 33:47The team send in their three top three requests, 123 and the
- 33:50Bulls send in their top three requests and then the SEC
- 33:54determines who goes where. So that way, if it rather than
- 33:58allow it to be a kind of a selection process, and I think
- 34:02that the the Big 12 would it would behoove them to do that
- 34:04because I mean, frankly, Iowa State, if if you're, you know,
- 34:07the Texas bowl would be great. I mean, if they play Mizzou,
- 34:11that would kind of generate some interest, you know, because they
- 34:14played each other for 100 years and, and then also playing in
- 34:17Texas I think is a good thing. And and they're not completely
- 34:20out by the way, of the Alamo bull.
- 34:22I know the Alamo bull is looking at Iowa State too.
- 34:24So, yeah, that's not one that's out.
- 34:26But I do, you know, but I, I think if you get past those two
- 34:30Texas bulls, you don't really want to go back to, to Orlando.
- 34:34You've been there pretty recently a couple of times.
- 34:36I think Phoenix would be a good spot even though it's lower in
- 34:39the big twelves. You know, echelon.
- 34:42So we know in the College Football Playoff, the ACC is now
- 34:45going to get one in the hope of a nine and four Duke team
- 34:48getting in and maybe two group of fives on that one's off the
- 34:51table. So they're going to get somebody
- 34:52in. Can they get 2?
- 34:54I mean, Miami, it feels like the argument is strengthening when
- 34:58the first playoff committee, when they first put out their
- 35:00first one was coming on the heels of another ugly loss.
- 35:04But then you look at their totality, they get to 10 and
- 35:06two, they'll have the win against Notre Dame in their back
- 35:08pocket. Is is Miami maybe more back on
- 35:10the table? And is that the most interesting
- 35:12thing to look at in that stupid TV show tomorrow night to seeing
- 35:15what they do with the Hurricanes?
- 35:17Yeah, I think so. I think the Hurricanes, you
- 35:20know, getting back up and you know that they were what, 14th
- 35:24or no, that's their poll. But, you know, they, they've
- 35:27been in, you know, they, they're right there on the cusp.
- 35:31But, you know, I, I would also say that Miami has done this to
- 35:35themselves. I mean, they're, they're 15th.
- 35:36I'm sorry. And they'll they'll move up, you
- 35:39know, and it depends on what happens with some of the teams
- 35:42above them, you know, But you know, I guess I don't have any
- 35:47sympathy for Miami. Well, you know, when when you're
- 35:50when you lose to 22 unranked teams.
- 35:52I mean, Louisville was pretty decent, but now it's seven and
- 35:55three and and SMU is 7 and three as well.
- 35:59But you're supposed to be a top five team and and you're keep
- 36:03you do this every year under Mario Cristobal.
- 36:06So get overhyped, win a couple of games early.
- 36:09You know, Notre Dame was a terrific win at home, very close
- 36:12game. But you know, the playing NC
- 36:15star they beat NC State playing Virginia Tech is not going to
- 36:19shouldn't vault them up even one spot.
- 36:21Now pit is a different animal. But I don't know.
- 36:24I I think the SEC will continue to kind of swirl around and, and
- 36:29frankly, I think both Oregon and USC are better than in position
- 36:32than than Miami. I mean, if USC wins this week,
- 36:35but then both or Oregon beats Washington and USC beats UCLA
- 36:39and and they're both 10 and two, I think they're in better
- 36:42position than Miami. I mean, they've had, you know,
- 36:44better strength of record. How much does the committee
- 36:47punish Texas A&M for that close win Wins a win, but it was a
- 36:53phenomenal second-half comeback. But do they get punished for
- 36:56that doc? They might I mean, Georgia might
- 37:00might be able to to move up. I mean, they beat Texas
- 37:03decisively and, and then with Alabama losing, it wouldn't, it
- 37:08wouldn't surprise me if, if Georgia and maybe even A and MI
- 37:14mean, I'm sorry, Texas Tech might slide into that
- 37:17conversation. You know, it's, it's, it's one
- 37:19of those, well, they're still undefeated, but man, I mean,
- 37:22they're down 30 to 3:00. And I thought there was no way.
- 37:26And, you know, they came back and won.
- 37:27But it's also like you're at home, I guess team that's not
- 37:30going anywhere that you got to, you got to be punished for that.
- 37:33I mean, I think if anything, it's they completely solidifies
- 37:36that Indiana deserves to be a minimum #2 over Texas A&M.
- 37:41Scott Dockerman from The Athletic What are you working on
- 37:44this week? I'm working on, I was at
- 37:47Northwestern on Friday all day. I went to their new stadium and
- 37:52got a tour there from the Ryan family.
- 37:55You know, going through each and every, it's going to be amazing.
- 37:58I can't even describe how good this place is going to be.
- 38:01It's going to be the best sight lines in the country, bar none.
- 38:04And so I'm writing that. I'm also breaking down the SCC
- 38:07and Big 10s TV issues with my SEC colleague Seth Emerson and
- 38:15and so those and also looking at the Dakota schools and the FCS.
- 38:20So yeah. Busy week for you, busy week for
- 38:23Trent and I and all the other subscribers up there as we read
- 38:25your work faithfully at the Athletic doc Thank you.
- 38:28I will speak with you next week if your schedule allows.
- 38:30Thank you, Scott Dockerman. Have a great week.
- 38:33You too. Thank you.
- 38:34Thank you, Doc. All right, Scott, Document on
- 38:36college football. Did you see much of the regular
- 38:38game? I did.
- 38:39Did you? Yeah.
- 38:40Yeah, I saw. Everything Game winner.
- 38:43Yes. Did they have to drive the
- 38:46length of the field to get it in range or was it was it ever in a
- 38:49vine? They're not going to Northwest
- 38:51is going to pull this one out or did you?
- 38:52I didn't ever have that, OK. It felt like they were going to
- 38:55get there. And as bad as Underwood was, and
- 38:56some of those interceptions were just hideous.
- 38:58I mean just. College football's never seen a
- 38:59freshman like. Him.
- 39:00Well, maybe somebody has overhyped as him.
- 39:03Well, he said it himself. He had Arch Manning too, so
- 39:05maybe that's a little bit more difficult.
- 39:07Yeah, I just, it kind of had that feeling that they were
- 39:09going to find a way on that drive, that they were going to
- 39:11get down there. But I was hanging out of Wild
- 39:13Rose in Jefferson, so I got to see everything.
- 39:15It was. Good.
- 39:16Was it good? Yeah, great turn out for Dallas
- 39:18Clark. Yeah, good, really good crowd
- 39:20that was on hand for that one. Met a number of people at the
- 39:22sports car and memorabilia show. Couple listeners to our show.
- 39:26Big thank you. Got some cards for the kids.
- 39:28Got a couple of Kate and Clark cards and opened up a couple of
- 39:31old packs of cards. You know reminiscing.
- 39:33Going back and got myself a new to Kembe Mutombo, just what I
- 39:35need. You can never have enough to
- 39:37Kembe on the tumble card strength.
- 39:39Miller and Condon back to wrap up hour number one.
- 39:41Bama Bob kicks off hour two, Bill Seals on Iowa State, it's
- 39:44the Iowa sports radio network. Hi Miller and Condon, welcome
- 39:48back. Final couple of minutes.
- 39:50Hour number one. We'd be remiss, Trent, if we
- 39:51didn't congratulate the Saskatchewan Rough Rider fans.
- 39:55I saw that on CBS Sports Network.
- 39:58It's on. Yeah.
- 39:58I watched it after the Broncos while waiting for the Sunday
- 40:01night game. Yeah.
- 40:04Anyways. Stage is set for the 5A
- 40:06championship game next Friday. I'm.
- 40:08Just going to get there because I watched the Murphy and
- 40:11Surrency do the game. You have the call.
- 40:14I didn't see Dowling this year. The running back #5.
- 40:17Ian Middleton, yeah. Middleton Where is is he a
- 40:20senior? Yes, yeah, he's been around.
- 40:21He's been a three-year starter for him.
- 40:23He's a load. He is.
- 40:25He's a load man and Nahos the quarterback and his younger
- 40:28brother Jimmy. I didn't see the Liberty game.
- 40:32They're fun to watch. Are they?
- 40:34They're undersized. This is going to be a good game.
- 40:36We'll see. I mean, this is the embodiment
- 40:40of big tough veteran. In there.
- 40:45Against Liberty, Scott Chandler, he might be the best coach in
- 40:48high school. I mean, what he's done with this
- 40:51team these last couple of years, they're little.
- 40:53They're they're, this is not an offensive line.
- 40:55You what you see here in the CIML and the way that they just
- 40:58physically dominated Milwaukee Northwest.
- 41:01Physically. Absolutely.
- 41:03Giving up twenty 3050 yards. As they will to be again this
- 41:06week. Absolutely.
- 41:08It's going to be a fun cat and mouse game.
- 41:10Their offense is so fun to watch.
- 41:11And their quarterback, Reese Redding, he's little.
- 41:15He is entertaining, runs around, he makes plays.
- 41:19He is a different kind of quarterback than anything
- 41:21Dowling has seen all season long.
- 41:23And we'll have it for you here. 7:00 Friday night.
- 41:25Good. Stuff what we're talking about
- 41:27that hats off to Brad Bunting and his crew had the valley
- 41:30Dowling game Bunting was the white hat.
- 41:32They love the explanations. They did a nice job at least in
- 41:35that semi final hour number two is next Bama Bob will kick it
- 41:39off Bill Seals joins us. So does Mr. Monday night, Miller
- 41:42and Condon an hour to go on a They're probably.
- 41:44I'm glad you're with us on the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
