- 0:00SPEAKER_00: So I have both Irish and German background.
- 0:05SPEAKER_00: And someone once said that if you're Irish and German, everything has to be perfect tomorrow.
- 0:13SPEAKER_00: So there's a certain connection,
- 0:17SPEAKER_00: I think,
- 0:17SPEAKER_00: between that and this gospel, which is that we want everything to be perfect.
- 0:23SPEAKER_00: We want everything to be exactly the way that it should be.
- 0:27SPEAKER_00: But we don't really want to do it right now.
- 0:30SPEAKER_00: We'll do it later on.
- 0:32SPEAKER_00: It's that tomorrow everything will be perfect.
- 0:36SPEAKER_00: And that is what this gospel is trying to get to, that Christ is here.
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: It might seem to us to be harsh, perhaps, when Jesus says, He says, let me go bury my father.
- 0:48SPEAKER_00: It's like, well, for heaven's sakes, you know, he says, let the dead bury their dead.
- 0:51SPEAKER_00: I mean, that seems to be a pretty unfeeling and harsh response.
- 0:55SPEAKER_00: But you have to understand the cultural context of what he's saying,
- 0:57SPEAKER_00: because to bury my father was an idiomatic expression,
- 1:00SPEAKER_00: which meant to put everything in order,
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: to put all the house in order,
- 1:03SPEAKER_00: you know, to get the inheritance set up, to dispose of the property.
- 1:07SPEAKER_00: It was to do all of those sorts of things, which you'd say, okay, well, now...
- 1:11SPEAKER_00: I can do something, right?
- 1:12SPEAKER_00: So it isn't as if his father has just died and he's lying there and there's nobody to bury him.
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: That's not what's being talked about here.
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: And that's why the Lord is saying, he says all of that is dead.
- 1:23SPEAKER_00: All that preoccupation with things.
- 1:27SPEAKER_00: Those are dead things.
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: Don't let your heart be caught up with what is dead,
- 1:33SPEAKER_00: with all of those worldly concerns and cares.
- 1:35SPEAKER_00: Those don't lead anywhere.
- 1:37SPEAKER_00: Rather come and follow me today, now, right now, not tomorrow, not the next day.
- 1:43SPEAKER_00: And that's so easy for us to say.
- 1:45SPEAKER_00: Tomorrow, I'm going to do those things.
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: And tomorrow never comes.
- 1:49SPEAKER_00: Because every tomorrow, there's another tomorrow.
- 1:50SPEAKER_00: And we keep putting things off.
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: And Christ says, today comes.
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: I am with you, right?
- 1:55SPEAKER_00: Today is the day of salvation.
- 1:57SPEAKER_00: If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts.
- 2:01SPEAKER_00: There's this famous today in the liturgy when we have our celebration of Easter,
- 2:05SPEAKER_00: of Christmas,
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: those words we had in literature say, Christ who rose from the dead, today.
- 2:11SPEAKER_00: Today, there's this presence of being with Christ in the liturgy now.
- 2:15SPEAKER_00: And when he came to people, that's the way he was.
- 2:17SPEAKER_00: He said he called the apostles and they came.
- 2:19SPEAKER_00: They dropped everything.
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: They left everything.
- 2:21SPEAKER_00: They followed him.
- 2:21SPEAKER_00: They weren't perfect people.
- 2:23SPEAKER_00: They had definitely problems and all those things came up in his ministry.
- 2:28SPEAKER_00: But nevertheless, they dropped everything and they followed him.
- 2:33SPEAKER_00: And that's what Christ is asking him.
- 2:35SPEAKER_00: He says today, today, follow me today.
- 2:37SPEAKER_00: Don't Don't put things off until tomorrow.
- 2:39SPEAKER_00: Don't wait until tomorrow.
- 2:41SPEAKER_00: Don't worry about all these worldly cares and concerns, all these things I have to do.
- 2:45SPEAKER_00: What about this?
- 2:46SPEAKER_00: And what about that?
- 2:47SPEAKER_00: Don't worry about that.
- 2:48SPEAKER_00: Leave those things in my hand.
- 2:50SPEAKER_00: Come and follow me now.
- 2:52SPEAKER_00: You know, put your life into the kingdom of God now.
- 2:57SPEAKER_00: Go and proclaim the kingdom of God, as he says.
- 2:59SPEAKER_00: And that's the way our life should be.
- 3:01SPEAKER_00: Our life should be a proclamation of the kingdom of God,
- 3:04SPEAKER_00: rather than the example of someone who's caught up and concerned
- 3:07SPEAKER_00: about all these worldly affairs and so forth.
- 3:09SPEAKER_00: Those things will be with us always.
- 3:11SPEAKER_00: We're never going to get that done.
- 3:12SPEAKER_00: It's like my grandfather never finished working in his yard.
- 3:14SPEAKER_00: I don't think he could, right?
- 3:15SPEAKER_00: It was his ongoing project that he always had,
- 3:18SPEAKER_00: and he always had all these things going on,
- 3:19SPEAKER_00: and It kind of would have been a disaster for him if he'd finished.
- 3:23SPEAKER_00: It had to be something that was always going on,
- 3:25SPEAKER_00: but he always told himself, well, I'm going to finish it.
- 3:27SPEAKER_00: And he never did.
- 3:29SPEAKER_00: And that's the way we are.
- 3:30SPEAKER_00: We want to have these ongoing things, but there's no end to them.
- 3:33SPEAKER_00: There's no end to our cares and concerns.
- 3:36SPEAKER_00: Well, as soon as I get my life in order,
- 3:38SPEAKER_00: as soon as I have those things taken care of, as soon as money's not a problem...
- 3:41SPEAKER_00: Then I will follow you, Lord.
- 3:42SPEAKER_00: Well, no,
- 3:42SPEAKER_00: those things are always going to be there and they're always going
- 3:45SPEAKER_00: to be creating new problems.
- 3:46SPEAKER_00: And I have to say, you know what?
- 3:48SPEAKER_00: I'm going to follow you, Lord, today as I am, where I'm at, regardless of anything else.
- 3:53SPEAKER_00: And all those other things will take care of themselves.
- 3:55SPEAKER_00: That's what the Lord says is seek first the kingdom of God.
- 3:58SPEAKER_00: And all these other things will be given you besides.
- 4:00SPEAKER_00: If I'm seeking first the kingdom of God, these other things will fall into place.
- 4:04SPEAKER_00: I will see the way that I can resolve those things.
- 4:08SPEAKER_00: But if I go and I'm going to resolve those things first before I follow God,
- 4:11SPEAKER_00: I'm never going to follow God.
- 4:12SPEAKER_00: That's Christ's message.
- 4:13SPEAKER_00: It's not a harsh message, but it's a very direct one.
- 4:17SPEAKER_00: And it's something that we need to hear because we need to be shaken out
- 4:20SPEAKER_00: of our complacency of just, you know, mumbling along, bumbling along.
- 4:24SPEAKER_00: Never doing what we know that we should do.
- 4:27SPEAKER_00: And you can waste your life that way.
- 4:28SPEAKER_00: And a life is never wasted if you're alive.
- 4:31SPEAKER_00: Because today, you have a chance to change.
- 4:33SPEAKER_00: Today, you have a chance to turn to the Lord.
- 4:36SPEAKER_00: Today, Christ is offering you.
- 4:37SPEAKER_00: He says, come and follow me today.
- 4:39SPEAKER_00: Today, he's putting that into our hands.
- 4:41SPEAKER_00: What are we going to do with this gift that he's giving us?
