Transcript
- 0:03Speaker 1: Oh, I like that on the record with Eric Boland
- 0:05Speaker 1: joining US Yankees beat writer for News to Day, Eric,
- 0:08Speaker 1: thanks for swinging back on FT Yes, krats wiki wiki.
- 0:12Speaker 1: So what's going on with the Yanks right now? There's
- 0:13Speaker 1: a lot of he's back, he's out. Give us the
- 0:16Speaker 1: pitching breakdown first.
- 0:18Speaker 2: Yeah, guys, First of all, nice to talk to you
- 0:20Speaker 2: guys again, and Eric, having covered you for at least
- 0:23Speaker 2: a little bit in the Yankees clubhouse a few years ago.
- 0:26Speaker 2: Good to see you know as well. And Hi Kevin,
- 0:29Speaker 2: nice to meet you.
- 0:31Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 0:31Speaker 2: Look, the biggest one obviously Max Free last night that
- 0:34Speaker 2: kind of came out of nowhere. He pitched pretty well
- 0:37Speaker 2: in his previous start against Seattle last Thursday, gave up
- 0:41Speaker 2: one run I think it was four hits. Afterwards that
- 0:44Speaker 2: there was no signs of anything wrong with him, he
- 0:47Speaker 2: said that he felt a little bit erradic, but you know,
- 0:50Speaker 2: you guys, know you don't pitchers take the mound more
- 0:52Speaker 2: often than not without their best stuff, So they're usually
- 0:55Speaker 2: grinding through on a you know, every five days basis.
- 0:59Speaker 2: But then last night they made the announcement that he
- 1:03Speaker 2: was going back on the IL with the bone bruis
- 1:05Speaker 2: in his left elbow, and that's the same injury that
- 1:08Speaker 2: had him out for two months earlier in the season.
- 1:11Speaker 2: And as Kevin and Eric certainly can tell you, it's
- 1:14Speaker 2: usually not a good prognosis for a professional athlete when
- 1:19Speaker 2: ends up in a single season back on the injured
- 1:22Speaker 2: list with the same injury that put him there earlier
- 1:25Speaker 2: in a given season.
- 1:27Speaker 4: Did they feel like the cause of the bone bruise
- 1:29Speaker 4: was the exact cause and did they fix that cause
- 1:33Speaker 4: coming off the il last time, or is it something
- 1:36Speaker 4: that since it's continuing to happen now, they're thinking they
- 1:40Speaker 4: need to figure out what was causing it and not
- 1:43Speaker 4: just letting it heal like they had for the last
- 1:45Speaker 4: two months.
- 1:46Speaker 2: Not to dodge you on that one, Eric, but they
- 1:49Speaker 2: made that announcement last night about seven seven thirty, So
- 1:53Speaker 2: we have not been had any access to the Yankees
- 1:56Speaker 2: as yet. Their clubhouse opening up in an hour or so,
- 1:59Speaker 2: and we'll probably, you know, hopefully get a little bit
- 2:01Speaker 2: more clarification on exactly the nature of Freed's injury. It's
- 2:08Speaker 2: worded the exact same way as the first injury, the
- 2:11Speaker 2: bone bruise and his left elbow, but in terms of
- 2:15Speaker 2: is this a new one. Is this one that didn't
- 2:18Speaker 2: heal the first time around? Did something aggravated, et cetera.
- 2:22Speaker 2: We don't know that yet.
- 2:24Speaker 4: When he was well then to follow up with that
- 2:27Speaker 4: when he was on the ail last time. Was it
- 2:30Speaker 4: just rest and recover? Was there something that he needed
- 2:34Speaker 4: to change to not have it comeback?
- 2:38Speaker 2: My understanding was Eric that it was just a rest
- 2:41Speaker 2: in recovery rehab for him during these two months.
- 2:44Speaker 3: Yep, okay, Speaking.
- 2:46Speaker 5: Of injuries, Belly was supposed to start his rehab assignment today.
- 2:51Speaker 5: They pushed it back a couple of days. Is there
- 2:53Speaker 5: was there a stepback or did he just feel like
- 2:55Speaker 5: he needed a little bit more work before he got
- 2:56Speaker 5: into a game.
- 2:58Speaker 2: No, Kevin, Actually, this was just sort of a this
- 3:00Speaker 2: is my eighteenth year covering the Yankees, and you know
- 3:03Speaker 2: they theyre as forthcoming with injury information as the CIA
- 3:06Speaker 2: typically is with the information that they protect. So this
- 3:11Speaker 2: is not This is not someone who's a homer covering
- 3:14Speaker 2: this team and saying, oh, well, we'll take the Yankees'
- 3:16Speaker 2: word at it.
- 3:17Speaker 3: This was really a case of somebody miss speaking.
- 3:20Speaker 2: Boone was asked before the game in Toronto on Sunday afternoon.
- 3:25Speaker 2: The boy the question was phrased, was so Bellinger started
- 3:29Speaker 2: his rehab assignment on Tuesday, And Boone, who wasn't entirely sure,
- 3:33Speaker 2: just said, yeah, yeah.
- 3:34Speaker 3: That is.
- 3:35Speaker 2: And then after the game he clarified and said, I
- 3:37Speaker 2: misspoke before the game, He's actually we're going to have
- 3:39Speaker 2: him to do a couple of more days of the
- 3:41Speaker 2: pregame work that he's been going through. I've actually been
- 3:44Speaker 2: watching Bellinger here Cambin Yards go through some of what
- 3:48Speaker 2: we saw him do in Toronto before some of those games.
- 3:50Speaker 2: But they just wanted to Kevin have him do a
- 3:52Speaker 2: couple of more days of that and then start a
- 3:54Speaker 2: rehab game at the end of this week, probably Thursday
- 3:57Speaker 2: or Friday. So this is not I'm plenty skeptical when
- 4:01Speaker 2: it comes to the the Yankees and talking about injuries,
- 4:04Speaker 2: but I think this was just a good natured mistake,
- 4:06Speaker 2: a good natured misspeak if you will, by Boom before
- 4:10Speaker 2: the game on Sunday, And he made a point after
- 4:13Speaker 2: the game when we were talking to him of correcting that.
- 4:19Speaker 5: Sorry, I'm gonna I want to stay on that topic
- 4:20Speaker 5: real quick. So them being harder than the CIA to
- 4:24Speaker 5: get information, and I know the type of injury that
- 4:26Speaker 5: Aaron Judge had is very kind of unpredictable. There's not
- 4:29Speaker 5: like a formula for how that's supposed to heal. But
- 4:33Speaker 5: is that part of the factor of why we're not
- 4:35Speaker 5: hearing much about Aaron Judge is because they keep stuff
- 4:37Speaker 5: close to the vest where there's just nothing to really
- 4:39Speaker 5: report at this point in time.
- 4:42Speaker 2: I'm havin to dug in on this with people in
- 4:45Speaker 2: the organization that I that I know since Judge went down,
- 4:49Speaker 2: and you know, from the start there was there was
- 4:52Speaker 2: concern that this would be a long lasting thing. And
- 4:55Speaker 2: I remember when they put him on the injured list
- 4:57Speaker 2: on June fifth. I remember talking to the organization who
- 5:02Speaker 2: said to me, look, if you presented to us now
- 5:04Speaker 2: that he'd be back by August fifteenth, we'd sign on
- 5:06Speaker 2: the dotted line for that, and I think Aaron would
- 5:09Speaker 2: as well. They're just uber protective of any information Judge related.
- 5:16Speaker 2: Some of that goes back to twenty eighteen when he
- 5:20Speaker 2: took a hit by pitch off his hand and had
- 5:23Speaker 2: a broken hand.
- 5:24Speaker 3: Jacob Junas I think the Royals was one who ran
- 5:27Speaker 3: with a pitch.
- 5:27Speaker 2: And the Yankees publicly offered a timeline for when Judge
- 5:31Speaker 2: might start swinging a bat again and get baseball activities
- 5:34Speaker 2: ramped up. Long story short, the hands a little bit
- 5:37Speaker 2: slower than was anticipated. And you know, frankly, Judge and
- 5:42Speaker 2: I certainly get this, got a little bit tired of
- 5:44Speaker 2: us constantly asking him, Hey, the timeline came and went
- 5:48Speaker 2: from when you were supposed to hit again?
- 5:49Speaker 3: What's going on? What's going on?
- 5:50Speaker 2: And ever since then, the Yankees had been extra extra
- 5:55Speaker 2: careful whenever Judge has been hurt in terms of disseminating
- 5:58Speaker 2: any information, and you almost never hear them give a
- 6:01Speaker 2: timeline of any kind. And it was funny before the
- 6:05Speaker 2: Apple TV game on on Friday, Aaron Boone told the
- 6:09Speaker 2: reporter Trisha Whittaker, he actually, for the first time anybody
- 6:14Speaker 2: in the organization gave some kind of a timeline, telling
- 6:17Speaker 2: her that it was might be a month or so,
- 6:21Speaker 2: couched a little bit in vagueness, but said maybe a month.
- 6:24Speaker 2: But then when we follow up and asked him about
- 6:26Speaker 2: that on Saturday morning before that afternoon's game at Roger Center,
- 6:31Speaker 2: Boone kind of pulled back on that a little bit.
- 6:35Speaker 2: So you know, they're they're still cloaking this in as
- 6:39Speaker 2: much uh mystery as as possible.
- 6:42Speaker 3: But Kevin, you alluded to it. I mean, anybody that.
- 6:45Speaker 2: I've talked to professional athlete who has had a broken
- 6:49Speaker 2: rib something similar to what Aaron Judge has, they all
- 6:53Speaker 2: talk about how you know, there's no template for it.
- 6:57Speaker 3: They heal it at a different pace.
- 6:59Speaker 2: And you know, once she is clear into dark baseball activities,
- 7:02Speaker 2: he's going to have to build back up because he's
- 7:04Speaker 2: spent the better part of the last ten weeks now
- 7:06Speaker 2: not doing anything upper body related. And I don't have
- 7:10Speaker 2: to tell you Eric and you Kevin, for you guys
- 7:15Speaker 2: that are generally in the weight room, what three hundred
- 7:16Speaker 2: and sixty five days a year, Judge isn't going to
- 7:19Speaker 2: suddenly in a snap be ready and let's say a
- 7:22Speaker 2: week once they determine that he can start restart baseball
- 7:25Speaker 2: activities in full.

- 8:27Speaker 4: What did you make of Aaron Boone's comment or answer
- 8:32Speaker 4: to the question of what's going on with John Carlow
- 8:36Speaker 4: Because he said we're introducing basis. Does that mean like
- 8:40Speaker 4: he walked out to the field and they showed him
- 8:42Speaker 4: when you go from first to second. It seemed like
- 8:45Speaker 4: a very fine comment, but I felt like it was
- 8:49Speaker 4: kind of like a shot at like, hey, we're going
- 8:52Speaker 4: to reintroduce him to cleats and the dirt is there
- 8:56Speaker 4: is there something more to that.
- 9:00Speaker 2: It's the kind of sarcasm I expect out of out
- 9:03Speaker 2: of a writer and not a.
- 9:04Speaker 3: Former MLB ard. So that's that's well done. Very I
- 9:08Speaker 3: think that.
- 9:09Speaker 2: Look, I mean John Carlow's had since he's been with
- 9:12Speaker 2: the Yankees, he's had at least one injured IL stint
- 9:16Speaker 2: every single year. He played one hundred and fifty eight
- 9:19Speaker 2: games since first year in twenty eighteen, and then since
- 9:21Speaker 2: then he's had a at least one I stint. The
- 9:23Speaker 2: vast majority of them have been lower body related. So
- 9:27Speaker 2: to me, reading between the fee leaves and I've seen
- 9:30Speaker 2: some of the running that he's done out on the field,
- 9:31Speaker 2: which they did to introduce him to that that basically
- 9:35Speaker 2: means that that he's running the bases at you know,
- 9:39Speaker 2: adder near full speed, at least at her near full speed.
- 9:42Speaker 2: For John Carlow, and typically in the past when he's
- 9:46Speaker 2: had some of these lower body injuries, whether it's a
- 9:49Speaker 2: hamstring or a calf or whatever it may be, that
- 9:53Speaker 2: usually has been around the final step, the final check
- 9:56Speaker 2: that he's needed to in the box to check off
- 10:00Speaker 2: before he's activated again.
- 10:02Speaker 3: That's typically, again one of.
- 10:03Speaker 2: The last things that he that they have him go
- 10:06Speaker 2: through medically is running the bases at full speed. So
- 10:10Speaker 2: the fact that he started that last week at least
- 10:13Speaker 2: as an indication to me that he that he's closer
- 10:17Speaker 2: to a return. What that timeline would be, I really
- 10:20Speaker 2: don't know, but it certainly is going to be before
- 10:22Speaker 2: Aaron Judge and after Tony melviner.
- 10:27Speaker 1: Well, let's talk about a player on the field, shall we.
- 10:29Speaker 1: I'm going to show off the George Lombard junior shirt
- 10:31Speaker 1: I'm wearing today foul Territory shop dot com. Are they
- 10:33Speaker 1: talking enough about him in general? Like is he getting
- 10:36Speaker 1: the hype that he deserves or did they kind of
- 10:38Speaker 1: waste that over the last four years on Anthony Volpi?
- 10:41Speaker 1: And there's some PTSD there, like, hey, let's see how
- 10:43Speaker 1: this looks, because I mean, the bat looks great. One
- 10:46Speaker 1: twenty seven ops plus that's twenty seven percent better than
- 10:48Speaker 1: league average over eight hundred ops. And then I was
- 10:51Speaker 1: looking at the defensive run saved for him, and I
- 10:53Speaker 1: know some people like different defensive metric categories. He's already
- 10:56Speaker 1: towards the top with like world's less innings than the
- 10:59Speaker 1: other workstops around him, Like it's Taylor walls and then
- 11:04Speaker 1: really for active shortstops right now, Mason win and then
- 11:07Speaker 1: Lombard is next on the list, which is crazy to me.
- 11:10Speaker 3: You never see that, you know, Scott.
- 11:12Speaker 2: The thing of it is, when he was coming up
- 11:15Speaker 2: through the miners, I remember talking to scouts from other
- 11:18Speaker 2: organizations that have the Yankee and those guys were telling
- 11:22Speaker 2: me when he was in Double A that defensively he
- 11:25Speaker 2: was major League ready. And most of those scouts are
- 11:29Speaker 2: guys that over the years are generally hard on the
- 11:32Speaker 2: Yankee prospects. And that's those are the people that I
- 11:34Speaker 2: want to talk to to try to get an honest
- 11:35Speaker 2: appraisal really, because you know, one of the things in
- 11:37Speaker 2: my time covering the sport is the you know, you
- 11:40Speaker 2: talk to a given team and you'd think that they
- 11:42Speaker 2: have fifty future All Stars in their system, the way
- 11:46Speaker 2: that teams protect and overhype their own prospects, et cetera.
- 11:49Speaker 2: So that's a I guess that's a soapbox for another day.
- 11:51Speaker 2: But guys, scouts that can be hard on Yankee prospects
- 11:56Speaker 2: were saying, now, this guy, you plug him into short
- 11:58Speaker 2: now at the night teen year old, he'd handle his
- 12:02Speaker 2: business in the big wags he's ready. The bat has
- 12:05Speaker 2: always been something that's come a little bit slower for
- 12:08Speaker 2: him at every single level. And this really has been
- 12:11Speaker 2: the exception because since he came up, he has not
- 12:15Speaker 2: looked overwhelmed at all in the batter's box. And I
- 12:18Speaker 2: would say Scott that he got hype commensurate for the
- 12:22Speaker 2: type of prospect that he was because and it does
- 12:25Speaker 2: relate to Boldy in a way, because Yankee fans, you know,
- 12:29Speaker 2: have been so fed up with with Boltpy, but really
- 12:32Speaker 2: the last couple of years, they've been clamoring for you know, information, updates,
- 12:38Speaker 2: et cetera, anything George Lombard Junior related. And certainly George
- 12:42Speaker 2: helped that his performance the last two spring trainings when
- 12:45Speaker 2: he's been in big League camp with the you know,
- 12:49Speaker 2: the rest of the Yankee veterans and impressed all of
- 12:52Speaker 2: those with how he acted on and off the field
- 12:56Speaker 2: the last two seasons. But there's been a lot of
- 12:59Speaker 2: hype with with and I would say that in all
- 13:02Speaker 2: honesty the last if I'm measuring it, you know, the
- 13:05Speaker 2: last two or three years, I would say it's it's
- 13:06Speaker 2: pretty similar to what Bolting was getting when he was
- 13:09Speaker 2: coming up.
- 13:10Speaker 1: Okay, good to know. Yeah, he deserves it. It's worth
- 13:13Speaker 1: it right now early on. I know it's early, but
- 13:15Speaker 1: looking the part, Eric, thanks for joining us, appreciate it.
- 13:18Speaker 1: Good to see you everyone follow him Eboland eleven on
- 13:22Speaker 1: Twitter x and then of course catching the articles on Newsday.
- 13:26Speaker 1: Enjoy it out there.
- 13:27Speaker 3: Thanks Scott, Eric Kevin. Good to talk to you guys,
- 13:30Speaker 3: as always, have a good afternoon.
- 13:32Speaker 1: Let's talk about this team that's back back in the
- 13:34Speaker 1: wild Card mix. Tim Barblace joining us and you can
- 13:37Speaker 1: hear him on Birdland Territory talking Orioles, part of the
- 13:41Speaker 1: FT Network. Also, he's on one of five seven the
- 13:43Speaker 1: fan out there every day in Baltimore from two to
- 13:46Speaker 1: six Eastern, so he's dialed all right, Tim, tell us
- 13:49Speaker 1: what's going on here? How is things? How have things
- 13:52Speaker 1: turned around so quickly for Baltimore to be back in this?
- 13:55Speaker 1: Is this more to do with the al being kind
- 13:57Speaker 1: of meh or the Orioles playing well again?
- 14:01Speaker 6: Well, I think you got to give this team a
- 14:03Speaker 6: lot of credit in terms of the offense picking it up. Guys,
- 14:06Speaker 6: their last eight games they've scored fifty one runs. They're
- 14:10Speaker 6: prior seven games to that, they scored eleven runs, and
- 14:13Speaker 6: this offense was built to be the superpower of the team,
- 14:17Speaker 6: and it's been above average, but it hasn't come close
- 14:20Speaker 6: to meeting expectations. Where you look at this recent run,
- 14:24Speaker 6: Pete Alonso is just saying, get all my back, I'll
- 14:26Speaker 6: carry you.
- 14:27Speaker 7: He's just on a ridiculous run right now.
- 14:29Speaker 6: Gunner Henderson this month of August has been so much
- 14:32Speaker 6: better than what we had been seeing up until this point.
- 14:36Speaker 6: He's not expanding the z own, he's not chasing nearly
- 14:38Speaker 6: as much.
- 14:39Speaker 7: Tyler O'Neill's hitting.
- 14:41Speaker 6: Kobe Mayo is the best hitting right handed bat against
- 14:44Speaker 6: left handed pitching all year. Jackson Holliday is really coming
- 14:48Speaker 6: into his own. Colden Cowser in this recent stretch is
- 14:51Speaker 6: in nice form. You're seeing this offense start to gain
- 14:55Speaker 6: some momentum. Now are they able to sustain it? We
- 14:59Speaker 6: shall see. That's been the Orioles' biggest issue all year long.
- 15:03Speaker 6: You think that they're going to turn the corner and
- 15:05Speaker 6: then they lay an egg. It's one step forward, one
- 15:07Speaker 6: step back, two steps forward, two steps back.
- 15:09Speaker 7: But make no mistake about it.
- 15:12Speaker 6: Heading into that series against the Rays, that was the
- 15:14Speaker 6: best team in baseball. They had the best home record
- 15:17Speaker 6: forty one and eighteen, and the Orioles took the first
- 15:19Speaker 6: three games against them, one sixth straight against the Rays
- 15:23Speaker 6: prior to losing last night.
- 15:25Speaker 5: Yeah, the timings a little bit suspicious. You trade Atlie Rushman.
- 15:29Speaker 3: And then they start to go off.
- 15:31Speaker 5: Is this kind of the collective group of young guys
- 15:34Speaker 5: that we've been talking about, this young core of the
- 15:36Speaker 5: Orioles understanding that this is their time or the band
- 15:41Speaker 5: might be broken up even more.
- 15:44Speaker 7: There's something to that.
- 15:45Speaker 6: I also think you need to give Pete Alonzo a
- 15:48Speaker 6: ton of credit because I remember the game initially following
- 15:51Speaker 6: the deadline on August fourth, Orioles won. Pete had a
- 15:55Speaker 6: monster game and he did a walk off interview on
- 15:57Speaker 6: Mass and he was basically saying, guys, like, it is
- 16:01Speaker 6: what it is. We need to rally, you know, it's
- 16:04Speaker 6: on honest the rest of the way. Let's have a
- 16:05Speaker 6: hell of a ride. And so far they've been able
- 16:08Speaker 6: to do that. But I think Jackson Holliday, you think
- 16:12Speaker 6: of him suffering that handmapone injury, going undergoing surgery. He
- 16:17Speaker 6: had three different rehab assignments and it took him a
- 16:20Speaker 6: while to get going. But over his last thirty two games,
- 16:23Speaker 6: he's hitting over three hundred.
- 16:25Speaker 7: You know, it's it's go time for him.
- 16:27Speaker 6: It's go time for Gunner Henderson, Colden Cowser, Kobe Mayo,
- 16:31Speaker 6: all of these guys, absolutely, But the player that has
- 16:34Speaker 6: been spearheading all of this has been Pete Alonso. He's
- 16:37Speaker 6: just been on a fantastic terror, especially of late.
- 16:42Speaker 4: I mean, you can just recycle that it's go time
- 16:44Speaker 4: for all those guys for the last few years, but
- 16:46Speaker 4: you talk about Pete the new addition this year, they
- 16:49Speaker 4: went out and paid for Pete to do exactly this,
- 16:52Speaker 4: to carry the team. Did you think you'd ever see
- 16:55Speaker 4: him carry the team from the leadoff spot.
- 17:00Speaker 7: I don't think Pete Alonzo saw that coming.
- 17:03Speaker 6: Pete even said prior to the game on Friday, I
- 17:07Speaker 6: believe it was he had never let off in his life,
- 17:11Speaker 6: going back to Little League, he had never let off.
- 17:13Speaker 7: And now he's saying, hey man, I'm the right hand
- 17:15Speaker 7: of Kyle Schwarber.
- 17:16Speaker 5: Right.
- 17:17Speaker 6: Look, I think it got to a point, especially this
- 17:20Speaker 6: past weekend, guys, where the Orioles they were struggling going
- 17:25Speaker 6: into that series against the Rays. They had dropped five
- 17:27Speaker 6: of their last seven series, and I think they were
- 17:30Speaker 6: just throwing you know what against the wall and hoping
- 17:33Speaker 6: it stuck.
- 17:34Speaker 7: Because we saw so many guys lead off during that series.
- 17:36Speaker 6: You saw Pete, you saw Jackson Holiday, we saw Tyler
- 17:41Speaker 6: O'Neill last night. Like they're just trying to throw stuff
- 17:44Speaker 6: against the wall and hope that it sticks.
- 17:49Speaker 8: Seekeek is the official ticket marketplace for Major League Baseball,
- 17:52Speaker 8: and anytime you want to go to a game, you
- 17:54Speaker 8: should go to Seakeek. I used to call the director
- 17:56Speaker 8: of team travel, I used to call the traveling secretary
- 17:58Speaker 8: whatever they want to be called to try to get
- 18:00Speaker 8: a seat. But on sea Geek, I can pick my
- 18:03Speaker 8: own seat and I can pick where I want to
- 18:05Speaker 8: sit instead of being told where to sit.
- 18:08Speaker 5: Yeah, it's a great option. And summer is coming to
- 18:11Speaker 5: an end here soon. I'm going out and finding all
- 18:15Speaker 5: the day games possible, all the warm weather cities so
- 18:19Speaker 5: I could stay in this tank top. I can watch
- 18:21Speaker 5: very competitive baseball as the calendar turns in two fall.
- 18:25Speaker 5: I want to make sure that I get the most
- 18:28Speaker 5: out of this tank top and warm weather and sea
- 18:31Speaker 5: Geek is where I would go and get my seats.
- 18:33Speaker 8: You can use code territory ten for ten percent off
- 18:35Speaker 8: your next set of MLB tickets at SEK. That's ten
- 18:38Speaker 8: percent off MLB tickets with promo code Territory ten. Make
- 18:42Speaker 8: sure you click the link in the description to download
- 18:44Speaker 8: the app and have the code automatically added to your
- 18:46Speaker 8: account so you can use it later.
- 18:48Speaker 4: But is this an indication that maybe there's a little
- 18:51Speaker 4: bit more of a front office push into this lineup?
- 18:55Speaker 4: Because I agree with the front office that says put
- 18:58Speaker 4: Kyle Schwarbin in a leadoff, like, we don't need a
- 19:00Speaker 4: speed guy in you lead off one time a game.
- 19:03Speaker 4: So is this a case where maybe the front office
- 19:06Speaker 4: has been pushing for this or is it just like
- 19:09Speaker 4: you said, like, you know what, nothing else has worked,
- 19:12Speaker 4: so let's try something new.
- 19:16Speaker 7: I think it's probably a combination of the two.
- 19:18Speaker 6: Look, this front office has a lot of influence over
- 19:21Speaker 6: how the Orioles operate on a day to day basis.
- 19:24Speaker 6: There's no secret around that. But I think we are
- 19:28Speaker 6: going to start to see down the stretch guys. Jackson
- 19:31Speaker 6: Holiday let off a ton for this club last year.
- 19:34Speaker 6: I remember when interim manager Tony Mancelino said at one point, Hey,
- 19:38Speaker 6: here's your leadoff guy for the next five years. If
- 19:41Speaker 6: it was me, I'm rolling with Jackson in the leadoff
- 19:44Speaker 6: spot right now.
- 19:44Speaker 7: He's just in rare form.
- 19:46Speaker 6: He's hitting left handed pitching even better than right handed pitching.
- 19:52Speaker 6: The whole platoon at second base is well beyond this
- 19:55Speaker 6: club at this point, I would lean into Jackson holiday down.
- 19:58Speaker 7: This stretch.
- 20:01Speaker 5: Is help on the way. Philips Batista coming back.
- 20:05Speaker 7: Can't believe it.
- 20:07Speaker 6: Like when he suffered that shoulder injury last year, I
- 20:10Speaker 6: just thought he was done, like it just coming off
- 20:13Speaker 6: Tommy John and then to go through that. I will
- 20:16Speaker 6: say Michaelias has been steadfast and saying that there is
- 20:19Speaker 6: a very very real possibility that he's going to be
- 20:22Speaker 6: back at some point this season in September. But I
- 20:25Speaker 6: think my question is what does this look like? There
- 20:28Speaker 6: are certainly reinforcements on the way. Samuel Bissio, he just
- 20:31Speaker 6: had his first rehab outing on Sunday. I would expect
- 20:35Speaker 6: Samuel Bisio to be back in this lineup at some
- 20:38Speaker 6: point during this home stand.
- 20:41Speaker 7: Ryan Helsley, we shall see.
- 20:43Speaker 6: I mean it's kind of been starts and stops with
- 20:45Speaker 6: him in terms of the elbow flaring up.
- 20:47Speaker 7: Where again, what does that look like?
- 20:49Speaker 6: Because the last time we saw him, it did not
- 20:51Speaker 6: look good for Ryan Helsley. But I think the player
- 20:54Speaker 6: that has Orioles fans maybe even most excited about guys,
- 20:59Speaker 6: is Blaize Alexander. I would expect him to be back
- 21:02Speaker 6: with this club at the end of the month beginning
- 21:04Speaker 6: of September. And keep in mind, when Blaze went down
- 21:09Speaker 6: that final game prior to the All Star Break, he.
- 21:12Speaker 7: Was leading the majors in batting average.
- 21:15Speaker 6: You know, from May one to mid July, he was
- 21:19Speaker 6: leading the majors in batting average, and he was also
- 21:21Speaker 6: giving him some slug his positional versatility, being able to
- 21:25Speaker 6: play literally all over the field infield, outfield. I think
- 21:29Speaker 6: the addition of Blaze will be big for this team
- 21:31Speaker 6: down the stretch.
- 21:33Speaker 4: Okay, so what we're looking at is the Orioles are
- 21:35Speaker 4: currently I should yes, currently in a playoff spot. They're
- 21:40Speaker 4: currently going to the playoffs. What can this team actually
- 21:44Speaker 4: do in the playoffs with a below average defense, with
- 21:47Speaker 4: which I think a few guys that shouldn't be playing
- 21:50Speaker 4: in positions that they're playing in, but they are, with
- 21:52Speaker 4: or without a guy like the mountain coming out of
- 21:55Speaker 4: the bullpen Er Hellsley. What can they do if they
- 21:59Speaker 4: actually get to the postseason.
- 22:04Speaker 7: It's hard to say.
- 22:05Speaker 6: I mean, it's hard to say with any confidence that
- 22:07Speaker 6: this team is going to go on a run, just
- 22:09Speaker 6: because if there's been anything consistent about this club, it's inconsistency.
- 22:14Speaker 7: You know, you just took three of four against the Rays.
- 22:16Speaker 6: Would it surprised me if Shane Boz gets shelled tonight
- 22:19Speaker 6: and the Orioles get blown out?
- 22:21Speaker 7: No, you know, it's not that long ago.
- 22:23Speaker 6: They won a series in LA against the Dodgers and
- 22:26Speaker 6: then lost the next series against the Angels, who are terrible.
- 22:30Speaker 6: It's just hard to get a feel for this club
- 22:34Speaker 6: and when you get to the postseason. Look, it's something
- 22:37Speaker 6: that Orioles fans talk about constantly. This is a ball
- 22:40Speaker 6: club that hasn't won a playoff game since twenty fourteen,
- 22:44Speaker 6: when they swept the Tigers in the Alds. That was
- 22:48Speaker 6: their last playoff win. So this is a team with
- 22:51Speaker 6: not a ton of playoff pedigree. Who's going to get
- 22:54Speaker 6: that ball in Game one? I would envision it would
- 22:57Speaker 6: be Kyle Bradish, but he has all of one playoff
- 23:00Speaker 6: start to his name.
- 23:02Speaker 7: It's hard.
- 23:03Speaker 6: I can't imagine this is a ball club that's going
- 23:05Speaker 6: to make a deep run in October, just based off
- 23:08Speaker 6: what we have seen through the first one hundred twenty
- 23:11Speaker 6: plus games.
- 23:13Speaker 5: Hey, as you know baseball, so much about timing the
- 23:16Speaker 5: Orioles playing good baseball, going into a really tough place
- 23:19Speaker 5: in the trut winning three out of four. What's your
- 23:22Speaker 5: expectations with them going into New York? And I know
- 23:24Speaker 5: New York hasn't isn't the same team without Aaron Judge
- 23:27Speaker 5: and Cody Bellinger? Was kind of your expectation for this series?
- 23:31Speaker 7: Well, it's kind of funny.
- 23:32Speaker 6: It's sort of flipped in terms of how I view
- 23:35Speaker 6: this team of late. Where the offense you were just
- 23:40Speaker 6: trying to bring them to the party for so long.
- 23:43Speaker 6: Where the strength of this team has been the starting
- 23:46Speaker 6: pitching in the bullpen. They're top ten and starter era
- 23:49Speaker 6: top ten and bullpen era since May twenty second.
- 23:53Speaker 7: But this offense has just struggled.
- 23:55Speaker 6: But as of late, guys, you're starting to see the
- 23:58Speaker 6: pitching fault or some starting rotations kind of in foreign territory.
- 24:02Speaker 6: Brandon Young has already vastly exceeded his career high in innings.
- 24:06Speaker 6: Kyle Bradish this is his first full season off Tommy
- 24:10Speaker 6: John he threw all of sixty some innings the prior
- 24:13Speaker 6: to years combined, and Shane Boz is on pace for
- 24:16Speaker 6: a career high in innings. So that's going to be
- 24:18Speaker 6: a storyline to monitor moving forward. But in this immediacy,
- 24:23Speaker 6: Shane Boz is on the mountain tonight. You know, he
- 24:25Speaker 6: had a season low three inning outing his last time
- 24:28Speaker 6: out in Minnesota. The Orioles typically do not give him
- 24:32Speaker 6: run support over this season.
- 24:33Speaker 7: But I have confidence in this offense right now.
- 24:36Speaker 6: Carlos Rodon is getting activated off the IL. He's making
- 24:40Speaker 6: his first start with the Yankees since the end of June.
- 24:43Speaker 6: Maybe this is a good spot for this Orioles offense
- 24:46Speaker 6: to keep it going.
- 24:47Speaker 7: Max Free would just put on the IL.
- 24:48Speaker 6: So I think Warren's starting tomorrow and then Garrett Cole
- 24:53Speaker 6: on Thursday. So this and you can say this with
- 24:57Speaker 6: every single series, but this Game one seems pretty pivotal.
- 25:00Speaker 6: If they're able to take this game one, I love
- 25:03Speaker 6: their chances to take this series. I think this offense
- 25:06Speaker 6: is going to continue this momentum that they've been on.
- 25:13Speaker 1: We have popin colors for Mack Weldon.
- 25:16Speaker 2: Here.
- 25:16Speaker 1: I've got a little green shade. You've got a nice
- 25:18Speaker 1: blue shade and what else do you love about mac
- 25:20Speaker 1: Weldon crats.
- 25:22Speaker 4: I can be head to toe with mack Weldon. I
- 25:24Speaker 4: have the underwear, I have the shorts, I have the pants,
- 25:28Speaker 4: I have the socks. Obviously we got the shirt and
- 25:30Speaker 4: the jackets. But it's head to toe comfort no matter
- 25:34Speaker 4: what piece they send. I even have a belt that
- 25:36Speaker 4: looks sick.
- 25:38Speaker 1: And make sure you check out mack Weldon's air knit
- 25:40Speaker 1: ex fabric to help you out. Their lightest fabric fused
- 25:43Speaker 1: with nylon mesh for maximum airflow. Skip the midday wardrobe
- 25:46Speaker 1: changes that barely Their feel also keeps you feeling more
- 25:49Speaker 1: dry and more fresh. You can browse that collection at
- 25:52Speaker 1: mackweldon dot com. Don't sweat the heat this summer. It

- 26:00Speaker 1: your first order of one hundred and twenty five bucks
- 26:02Speaker 1: or more with promo code foul. That's m ack w
- 26:06Speaker 1: E l d O N dot com code foul.
- 26:10Speaker 5: Tim.
- 26:10Speaker 4: Do you know who got the last five outs of
- 26:13Speaker 4: the game that they just lost?
- 26:16Speaker 7: That was Brian Baker.
- 26:18Speaker 4: And encourage the fans to Look who Brian Baker played
- 26:22Speaker 4: for last season and was traded for. Do you know
- 26:26Speaker 4: any other reason why he was traded away from a
- 26:28Speaker 4: team that clearly needs bullpen pieces and is now leading
- 26:31Speaker 4: the American League in safs.
- 26:35Speaker 7: Look at it this way.
- 26:37Speaker 6: They gave Tyler Wells over there, and Tyler Wells was
- 26:39Speaker 6: one of the best relievers, and he was under club
- 26:41Speaker 6: control through next year. So you're gonna have to face
- 26:45Speaker 6: both of those guys the rest of this year in
- 26:47Speaker 6: twenty twenty seven. Look, Brian Baker during his time in Baltimore,
- 26:51Speaker 6: he was a power arm, but he was very, very inconsistent.
- 26:56Speaker 7: I will say last season he.
- 26:58Speaker 6: Was starting to turn thing, and who the heck could
- 27:02Speaker 6: have seen this run out of Brian Baker.
- 27:03Speaker 7: At this point, he hasn't blown a save since May.
- 27:06Speaker 6: Look, I've always loved Brian Baker in terms of like
- 27:10Speaker 6: his swagger and just you know, he doesn't give a
- 27:13Speaker 6: you know what attitude, Like you saw after he completed
- 27:17Speaker 6: that save, he grabbed his junk because the Orioles are
- 27:20Speaker 6: doing that of late as this weird celebration. So I've
- 27:24Speaker 6: always been a Brian Baker fan man, But look, Baker's
- 27:28Speaker 6: got multiple more years of club control, Wells has next
- 27:32Speaker 6: year of club control at least a Red Sox. We've
- 27:36Speaker 6: seen multiple of these moves in the Al East.
- 27:41Speaker 5: All right, just the one for me. We know how
- 27:44Speaker 5: very average the American League is this year. What do
- 27:47Speaker 5: you need to see from the Orioles in order to
- 27:50Speaker 5: kind of push to separate themselves from the pack and
- 27:54Speaker 5: get a wildcard spot.
- 27:57Speaker 7: I think it's just more of what we've seen in
- 27:59Speaker 7: this recent wretch.
- 28:00Speaker 6: If this offense can continue to turn it around. Look,
- 28:05Speaker 6: I don't think it's any coincidence that Pete Alonso's going
- 28:08Speaker 6: really well. Gunner Henderson he's starting to have his best
- 28:11Speaker 6: month of his season, and the Orioles are coming off
- 28:15Speaker 6: their best series arguably of the year. So I think
- 28:18Speaker 6: it's more consistency from this Orioles offense and then the
- 28:22Speaker 6: starting rotation get back on track themselves, where this last
- 28:26Speaker 6: time through it hasn't been nearly as good as it
- 28:29Speaker 6: was leading up to this stretch. It's just when something's going,
- 28:34Speaker 6: something's not that they haven't been able to put it
- 28:37Speaker 6: all together over a prolonged period of time. If they
- 28:40Speaker 6: can get the pitching to go along with this hitting,
- 28:43Speaker 6: they're going to go on a run here.
- 28:45Speaker 4: All right, let's say that happens. Does that save Michael
- 28:48Speaker 4: Lias's job? Or has he already made his bed based
- 28:51Speaker 4: on the moves he's made and put this team in
- 28:53Speaker 4: bad positions?
- 28:56Speaker 7: It's really tough. That's the million dollars yoh man.
- 29:00Speaker 6: Look a line that I've been using a lot this
- 29:04Speaker 6: year on Berdland territory on one of five to seven
- 29:08Speaker 6: the fan. If this team does not make the playoffs,
- 29:12Speaker 6: if you would have went to Michael Aias at his
- 29:14Speaker 6: introductory press conference eight years ago and said, Mike, through
- 29:18Speaker 6: the first eight years of your tenure as GM now
- 29:21Speaker 6: President of Baseball Ops, you will not have won a
- 29:24Speaker 6: playoff game. How would you categorize that? He would call
- 29:27Speaker 6: it a failure? He would I mean, that's just the
- 29:30Speaker 6: reality of the situation. And this isn't an Orioles thing.
- 29:33Speaker 6: This isn't a baseball thing. This is a sports thing.
- 29:36Speaker 6: If you go eight years as a GM and not
- 29:39Speaker 6: win a playoff game, I'd love to know how often
- 29:43Speaker 6: that's happened over the course of all sports, not just baseball. Now,
- 29:47Speaker 6: if they end up making the playoffs and they make
- 29:50Speaker 6: a little bit of noise, maybe that saves him.
- 29:52Speaker 7: Maybe they missed the playoffs and he's safe.
- 29:55Speaker 6: Anyways, they'll hide behind the lockouts, saying that they don't
- 29:58Speaker 6: want to go through this during all of this uncertainty
- 30:01Speaker 6: during the offseason. Look, David Rubinstein, the head owner of
- 30:06Speaker 6: this team, has always been he always heeps Michael aias
- 30:10Speaker 6: a lot of praise. But I don't know if you
- 30:12Speaker 6: guys saw a recent interview that he did for a
- 30:15Speaker 6: book that he has coming out about being an owner,
- 30:19Speaker 6: he said that he's embarrassed by what has happened over
- 30:22Speaker 6: these past couple of years. He mentioned that they infused
- 30:26Speaker 6: a ton of money and right now they're closer to
- 30:29Speaker 6: last place than a playoff, you know. So it's it.
- 30:33Speaker 6: I could go either way with this, I really could.
- 30:37Speaker 6: If they make the playoffs, my bet would be that
- 30:39Speaker 6: he's safe.
- 30:42Speaker 1: Yeah, that's fair, right, And if they don't, he's out.
- 30:44Speaker 1: I mean, gosh, playing to that question about Baker, possibly right,
- 30:48Speaker 1: it should be, though, like you're saying, right, eight years
- 30:50Speaker 1: you don't make it. The owner's embarrassed. There's only one
- 30:53Speaker 1: thing you can do in that case, And I'm with you.
- 30:55Speaker 1: How embarrassing when you could be handing a four game
- 30:58Speaker 1: sweep to the Rais and Brian Baker is dusting off
- 31:01Speaker 1: five outs against you, and you're just giving your division rivals,
- 31:05Speaker 1: multi year relievers to burn you as a fringe playoff team.
- 31:09Speaker 1: It's very frustrating, Tim, We've talked about it over the
- 31:11Speaker 1: years when I'm like, what is your plan here? Just
- 31:14Speaker 1: collecting and hoarding prospects or actually trying to put together
- 31:17Speaker 1: dub So anyway I can go all day, and Birdlin
- 31:20Speaker 1: Territory does go all day. So Tim, thanks for joining us,
- 31:23Speaker 1: and I encourage everyone to check out much more OILS
- 31:25Speaker 1: coverage as part of the FT Network on that show.
- 31:27Speaker 1: Appreciate you man.
- 31:29Speaker 7: Thanks guys, and there it is.
- 31:31Speaker 1: Brad Brock, Steve Maluski and Tim Barblace hosting that show.
- 31:36Speaker 1: Chris Davis was on a recent episode, Go Get It.
