- 0:07The New York Yankees faced the Detroit Tigers at Tiger Stadium for a Saturday afternoon game on June 1st, 1968.
- 0:14The Yankees were managed by Ralph Halk and have been struggling for their fourth consecutive season having finished below 500 in 1965, 66, and 67.
- 0:22The Tigers came into this game hot with a 28-16 record and in first place with a four-game lead in the American League.
- 0:28They were managed by Mayo Smith and were looking to keep the momentum going after narrowly missing out on the AL Pennant in 1967 in a three-team race with Baltimore and Minnesota.
- 0:37This audio recording is from the New York Radio broadcast featuring announcers Phil Rizzuto, Jerry Coleman, and Frank Messer.
- 0:43Well, the fans settled back and the happiest people in Detroit right now, the 15,000 to 18,000 youngsters that were afraid for a long time that they wouldn't see a ball game this afternoon.
- 0:53It is just a little bit brighter now than it was before. The rain has stopped. The clouds appear to be just a little bit higher than they were.
- 1:01The lights are on here at Tiger Stadium. The Yankees playing this game under the leadership of Frank Crassetti, Jim Trenner, Whitey Ford, and Jim Higgin.
- 1:18Right now as Crassetti came out around home plate, John Stevens stopped him. They had a bit of a conversation.
- 1:25And now Stevens is calling something down to first base umpire Kinnaman.
- 1:29Bill Monbuket continues to throw out of the Yankee bullpen. Some remarks directed toward Monbuket. He turned around.
- 1:38Whether he will be allowed to continue warming up, and I don't see why he should not be as the Yankees come to bat, but we will see.
- 1:45Manager Ralph Houch back east. Today attended the graduation of his 18-year-old son, Bobby, from prep school in Pauling, New York.
- 1:56And the first time in Ralph Houch's managerial career that he has missed a ball game.
- 2:03And for quite a while it appeared that he would not miss one because we certainly thought that this one would be rained out.
- 2:10But they held off until the last minute and now the rain has stopped.
- 2:15The series continues, weather permitting, with a doubleheader tomorrow afternoon.
- 2:21The Yankees will go with a pair of left handers.
- 2:23Fritz Peterson in one game and Steve Barber will be making his first 1968 start for the Yankees in the other.
- 2:30The Detroit Tigers will go with Denny McLean who has won eight and lost only one this year.
- 2:35And probably John Hiller will make his first start after eight relief appearances.
- 2:40Tigers in a bit of a bind for starting pitchers right now due to an injury to Earl Wilson.
- 2:47Wilson in a game on the West Coast in covering first base on a play, jammed his foot, was on crutches for a few days thereafter.
- 2:55However, last night he was running very lightly in the outfield and is working himself back into condition, but of course he will have to miss this series.
- 3:04Horace Clark steps in against Les Kane. Clark batting 217.
- 3:09The big left hander pumps and throws and he has a fastball in for a strike. This game is underway.
- 3:17Kane bears a startling resemblance to Don Newcomb.
- 3:24Wines, kicks and fires. Ground ball is spiked to the left side, backhanded by Ola deep in the hole, but he has no throw.
- 3:31Horace Clark running hard, beats it out for a base hit.
- 3:35Ola got to the ball deep in the hole as he backhanded it. He slipped just momentarily in a little muddy spot out there.
- 3:44However, the fact that he slipped did not affect the play. Clark would have had it beaten even had he made a throw.
- 3:51So Clark is on with a leadoff single to the infield and Roy White who is hitting 293 steps in.
- 3:59Kane looks to first, cash holding and the pitch is fouled to the upper deck.
- 4:08Young man up there high on the upper deck on the first base side made a one hand catch of that ball and it was hit hard.
- 4:18He got stuck his right hand out, pulled it in very nonchalantly.
- 4:23White's 293 batting average ties him with Andy Casco of the Yankees for sixth place among the American League hitters.
- 4:32Shops a foul ball off the third base side and a nice trap of the ball by Frank Ricetti.
- 4:48It is not a cold afternoon here in Detroit, temperature in the mid 60's.
- 4:53Very little breeze blowing but very damp.
- 4:57But look to first.
- 5:00O2 pitch to White, shot toward the second baseman. Let's see if they go for two.
- 5:04Out at second, no, safe at second base says Euler.
- 5:09Now he is out at second base. Euler dropped the ball. Euler dropped the toss from second base from McAuliffe.
- 5:18But umpire Russ gets ruled that he dropped it after he had tagged the bag.
- 5:27I would have a feeling that if Mr. Hough were here that would have brought a bit of a rhubarb.
- 5:34It did not look from here as if he had possession of the ball when he crossed the bag.
- 5:39But Yetz says Yetz thought it was a fielder's choice. Black is out at second, White out on a fielder's choice.
- 5:46And now Mickey Maddow steps aboard.
- 5:53Yes sir, I think if Ralph were here that might have drawn a bit of a rhubarb.
- 5:57Here's Maddow batting 250, six home runs, pitch to him, swung on him, missed back line.
- 6:14It was ruled that Euler did have possession of the ball when he crossed the bag and that he dropped it, transferring it to his throwing hand.
- 6:22Maddow fouls one to the screen, behind the plate, strike two.
- 6:37Andy Costco kneeling on deck.
- 6:46You can hear the kids yelling in the background, we want it out. There are a lot of them out here.
- 6:51White leads away from first, Kane to Maddow, high, one ball and two strikes.
- 7:01Leslie Kane is a big lad. He stands 6'1", weighs in at 200, he appears to be bigger than that.
- 7:09But the book has him, 6'1", and 200.
- 7:12Here's the Tigers' fourth choice in the June 1966 draft out of El Cerrito, California High School.
- 7:21One-two pitch to Maddow, foul back off the shin guards of catcher Bill Prian.
- 7:31Kane had a year and a half in the minor leagues, he got in 16 games the year he was signed.
- 7:37And last year he appeared in 33 games for Montgomery of the Southern League, won 11, lost 13, and also pitched a no-hitter.
- 7:47His problem is control.
- 7:51One-two pitch to Mickey.
- 7:56Here it comes, curve is inside. Two balls, two strikes.
- 8:20White, short lead at first, Kane looking straight at him as he starts his stretch.
- 8:26Pitch to Mickey, get right back through the box and into center field.
- 8:29They said, let's see if White tries for third. He's on his way.
- 8:33And White makes it the third standing up.
- 8:35Center fielder Mickey Stanley came after that ball rather gingerly,
- 8:38which leads us to believe there is more water out there in that area of center field than it appears from here.
- 8:44Stanley sort of tiptoeing in, did not charge the ball to try to make a play on White at third.
- 8:51And Maddow ripped it right back between the legs of the pitcher Les Kane.
- 8:55Single for Mickey, White at third.
- 9:00And the batter is Andy Cosco.
- 9:03Cosco hitting 293.
- 9:06The only other time Kane pitched against the Yankees, Cosco tagged him for a home run.
- 9:19Cosco requests second base umpire Russ Goetz, move a bit out of his line of vision and Goetz takes a few steps to his left.
- 9:27Runners first and third, pitch to Cosco.
- 9:29Powerball pumped off the third base side.
- 9:35Looking out towards center field, it may be my imagination, but it appears that where Mickey's ball stopped, there's a little bit of a dip.
- 9:43A little sunken spot, which might have collected some water because ordinarily Stanley would have come in harder for that ground ball.
- 9:56The ball's one strike to Cosco.
- 9:59Maddow at first, White at third, the pitch.
- 10:01Check swing, oh he went around, oh Stevens said he went around and Crocetti is upset.
- 10:09Crow calling something down from the third base coaching lines and also Pepitone, who is on deck, is shouting at Stevens and now the Yankee dugout gets on him.
- 10:19And Stevens standing like a statue staring straight over at the dugout.
- 10:24As if to say, ah now he warned somebody with a finger.
- 10:32Well the Yankees have had two questionable calls now.
- 10:37Two strike pitch coming to Cosco.
- 10:40Bow, tip.
- 10:49The helper looking out toward that center field area we were talking about says there is a drain out there and that leads us to believe that there is a slight sunken spot.
- 10:59Perhaps the water collected there a little heavier than other parts of the field.
- 11:05Infield appears to be in excellent shape, protected by the Tarblin.
- 11:10Kane starts his move, two strike pitch to Cosco, here it comes, a ball inside.
- 11:26No score in our game, which got underway about 20 minutes late because of the rainfall.
- 11:34Sky is much lighter now.
- 11:38One to the Cosco, inside backs him out, two balls two strikes.
- 12:01Mantle at first, White at third, one away, two to pitch.
- 12:08Grounded down the third base line, White will score and they won't have a play anywhere, all hands are safe.
- 12:13Slow roller down the third base line.
- 12:16Kane could not get to it in time, neither could Don Worth.
- 12:19Cosco has an infield hit and a run batted in, the Yankees lead one to nothing.
- 12:23Mantle stopped at second.
- 12:27The Yankees have run batted in.
- 12:31Slow roller down third.
- 12:35They didn't make a throw on Cosco.
- 12:38White running hard, would have had any play beaten at the plate.
- 12:51Kane looks back to second.
- 12:53A tad of kicks and deals, fast and low, out of the net of Freon, but he kept it right at his feet.
- 12:59No chance for the runners to move.
- 13:09That had not been for the play at second base a moment ago, the Yankees could have a beginning going.
- 13:16Supperton looking down, trying to pick up the target sent by Freon. Fitch is in the dirt in front of the plate and blocked by Freon with his chest.
- 13:29Although the skies are brightening up a bit, the lights have been on since the start of this game here at Tiger Stadium.
- 13:43Alright, you may have heard the announcement now that just as we told you, Gets ruled that Euler was in possession of the ball in that play at second.
- 13:51Strike to Pepitone, two balls, one strike.
- 14:07West Kane sets, kicks and fires. Pepitone fouls it at the feet of Freon.
- 14:15Freon leaned down to pick that ball up and I think Pepitone tapped him on top of the head with the hand lead of the bat, not intentionally.
- 14:29Two balls, two strikes to Pepe.
- 14:31Maddleth second, Cosco at first.
- 14:33Here's the pitch, check swing and a ball. Full count now, three and two.
- 14:54Kane and his move. Three-two pitch, runners hole, Pepitone lines, what a center field they set.
- 14:59Let's see if Mano can score it, he's being waved around by the crow.
- 15:03Joe goes to second base, Mickey scores and the Yankees lead to the nothing.
- 15:11That brings Mayo Smith out of the dugout and as he comes out, he has started a right-hander, Pat Dobson, warming up on the bullpen.
- 15:20The Yankees have jumped on left-hander Kane for two runs here in the first inning so far on four-base hits.
- 15:26Pepitone's run batted in, he is the eleventh of the year. Solid line drive to settle, center.
- 15:34Ball hit by Clark was hit well, although it was stopped by the shortstop Euler.
- 15:40White's bouncer was not hit well.
- 15:43Mickey's single, a ground ball right through the legs of the pitcher was well hit.
- 15:47Casco's ball was not well hit, he topped it, just dribbled it down the third baseline, but that line drive by Pepitone was a solid frozen rope to center.
- 15:56Mayo Smith has had his say at the mound, walking back toward the dugout.
- 16:05I would doubt if he could make a pitching change right now because he has just had Dobson get up.
- 16:11And a few drops of rain start falling again, but not enough to interfere with this game.
- 16:17Tommy Trash the batter, hitting 153.
- 16:20Casco at second, Pepitone at first.
- 16:28Kane kicks and fires outside, ball one.
- 16:39Right-hander Pat Dobson, trying to get loose in a hurry.
- 16:521-0 pitch, way up high with a change up, and Prianne had a reach for it.
- 16:59So far here in the first inning, the Yankees have scored as many earned runs off Kane as he had given up in his other ball games, too.
- 17:08Started this game with an earned run average of 0.82.
- 17:16Trash takes a swing and tips it into the mitt.
- 17:20Two balls, one strike.
- 17:31Out in the center field bleachers, a lot of fans have moved up to the very top and are huddling under the scoreboard to keep out of the rain.
- 17:39Makes a pretty good roof for them up there.
- 17:422-1 pitch to Trash, ground ball back through the box and on through to center field, base in.
- 17:46Casco waved around, he will score.
- 17:48Pepitone stops at second, and the Yankees lead 3-0.
- 17:52And that will be all for Sugar Kane.
- 17:58For Trash's 18th run batted in, Mayo Smith comes out and as he does, he waves to the bullpen for Pat Dobson.
- 18:08So the Yankees jumping on Kane for three runs on five hits here in the first inning.
- 18:14He has retired only one man, so Kane works with one third of an inning.
- 18:18The Yankees lead 3-0.
- 18:20And Pat Dobson will come on to pitch to Bobby Cox.
- 18:30For Dobson, the appearance will be his 11th, all in relief.
- 18:33He has no record.
- 18:36He's pitched 12 innings, allowed 12 hits, five earned runs, an earned run average of 375.
- 18:42His watch 7 struck out 13.
- 18:47Dobson, as we recall, did not fare too well against the Yankees in New York.
- 18:53He relieved in the game that Kane started at Yankee Stadium.
- 18:58Retired one man, gave up one run, one hit, and walked one.
- 19:07While Dobson warms up, we'll look at the scoreboard for you.
- 19:10Boston scored two runs in the first inning.
- 19:14And at the end of one and a half, it's Boston 2 and Baltimore nothing.
- 19:18Gene Brabender pitching for Baltimore and Ray Culp, the starter for Boston.
- 19:23Washington got a run in the first inning at Cleveland, one to nothing at the end of one.
- 19:28Bosman pitching for Washington and Stan Williams for the Indians.
- 19:32Minnesota and Chicago are scoreless at the end of two innings with Dean Chance going against Cisco Carlos.
- 19:38And later on, California plays at Oakland, a twilight game.
- 19:42In the National League, only two afternoon games.
- 19:46The Mets lead St. Louis one to nothing at the end of one and a half.
- 19:48Ray Washburn pitching for the Cardinals.
- 19:51Nolan Ryan for the New York Mets, one to nothing, Mets at the end of one and a half.
- 19:56Later on this afternoon, San Francisco is at Los Angeles.
- 20:00The other National League games will be tonight with Atlanta at Pittsburgh, Chicago at Houston, and Cincinnati at Philadelphia.
- 20:16Pat Dobson, tall, slender right-hander, 6'3, 190 pounds, 26 years of age, a native of Dupu, New York.
- 20:29Bobby Cox steps in against him with Pepitone at second, Tresch at first, one out, three runs in the bank.
- 20:38Cox batting 230 after having a single and a double in three official trips last night.
- 20:46Dobson, the set, the pitch, strike with a breaking pitch over the outside corner.
- 20:57Dobson got in 28 games for the Tigers last year, had a record of one win and two losses.
- 21:03He was called up during the season from Toledo.
- 21:13There's a fly ball out of the shallow right field coming on for it is Northrop.
- 21:17He will not get there.
- 21:18Pepitone's going to try to score, and he will score as the throw goes toward third base.
- 21:24Prosetti realizing that ball had a chance of falling in, had brought Pepitone well onto a third, and then waved him home.
- 21:33And the Yankees lead by a score of 4-0.
- 21:37For Bobby Cox, his 11th run batted in.
- 21:40Tresch now at second, Cox at first.
- 21:43The run is charged to Kane.
- 21:52Now Jake Gibbs, the eighth Yankee to come up here in the first inning.
- 21:57Jake set out last night's game in favor of Ellie Rodriguez against the southpaw Mickey Lulich.
- 22:04He is batting 238.
- 22:21Dobson comes to the set.
- 22:23Here's the pitch to Gibbs.
- 22:25Low, ball one.
- 22:41Look back to second, the pitch. Low again, two balls and no strikes.
- 22:56Yankees off to a 4-0 lead here in the first inning.
- 23:07Dobson, leaning way down to take his sign, now ready to pitch to Gibbs.
- 23:12Here it comes, swung on, high pop-up to the shallow left.
- 23:16Back goes the shot stop, Euler, in comes Horton.
- 23:18Euler falls down and Horton makes the catch.
- 23:28Even though that ball was fairly well out in the left field, the umpires had ruled it an infield play.
- 23:36So there are two down.
- 23:51Bill Monboquette.
- 23:56Monbo has been up 20 times, has three base hits.
- 24:05Swings and misses, strike one.
- 24:21Yankees have batted around here in the first.
- 24:25Against Kane and Dobson.
- 24:29Pitch to Monbo, swung on, ground ball back up the middle, but it is picked up by Euler, the shot stop, he tags, second ahead of Gibbs.
- 24:37Horton and Rutter ahead of Cox, and the side has retired.
- 24:42But the Yankees score four runs on six base hits.
- 24:47There were no errors, two men are left on.
- 24:49At the end of one-half inning, the score is New York 4 and Detroit nothing.
- 24:55See here's someone who knows baseball inside and out, the white owl girl.
- 25:00Let me ask you, who's going to be the next Hall of Famer?
- 25:03Personally, I think it will be that pitcher who smokes white owls.
- 25:08He has so much going for him.
- 25:10And then there's that other player, the catcher, the invincible man.
- 25:15He's always smoking one.
- 25:17I really like that catcher, invincible man.
- 25:20But who's going to walk off with the most valuable player award this year?
- 25:23I'd vote for that outfielder.
- 25:25I forget his name, but you know him.
- 25:28He's a big Ranger fan.
- 25:30Why do you pick these ball players as standouts?
- 25:33Because they have such good taste.
- 25:35Anyone who smokes a white owl has.
- 25:38It's the way white owl ages the tobacco, mellows it to bring out that mild taste.
- 25:44One more thing, do you have any advice for a budding ball player who wants to make it to the big leagues?
- 25:49I'd tell them to try a white owl.
- 25:51Find out why you get a lot more from a white owl than just smoke.
- 25:58Bill Maugham-Bouquet takes the mound with a 4-0 lead.
- 26:10And before he throws his first pitch on New York Yankee baseball, let's pause for station identification.
- 26:16Hi, this is Jerry Ducey.
- 26:18Thank you for watching me for my telephone talk show.
- 26:21Weeknights here at 810 and you dial WGY Schenectady.
- 26:31A reminder that this program, brought to you in cooperation with Sports Network,
- 26:35is authorized under rights granted by the New York Yankees solely for the entertainment of our audience.
- 26:40And any publication, reproduction, or other use of the descriptions and accounts of this game
- 26:45or the express consent of the New York Yankees is prohibited.
- 27:00Checking the Yankees out defensively, Roy White in left field, Joe Pepitone in center,
- 27:07and Andy Kosko in right.
- 27:09Around the infield, Bobby Cox at third, Tommy Trash at shortstop,
- 27:12and Dennis Clark at second, Mickey Mantle at first.
- 27:15Jake Gibbs does the catching.
- 27:24Dick McAuliffe, the tanker's second baseman, leads off.
- 27:27He went 0-4 last night. McAuliffe is batting 2-0-5.
- 27:33He takes a ball low outside.
- 27:37The tankers have a couple of power hitting infielders.
- 27:40McAuliffe has 5 home runs, 16 runs batted in,
- 27:43and the third baseman, Don Wert, has 5 homers and 13 runs batted in.
- 27:48Pitch to the left-hand hitter, low, ball 2.
- 28:06Mon Bouquet to the windup, fires high, ball 3.
- 28:12Mambo wants another baseball.
- 28:17From the time Mon Bouquet finished his warm-up throws prior to the game,
- 28:23the time he took the mound was almost half an hour.
- 28:27The Yankees were at bat a long time.
- 28:31Here's the 3-0 pitch, and he lays it right in for a called strike.
- 28:45Foul ball back off the chest protector, a plate on fire, Johnny Stevens.
- 28:51So the count goes for all 3 and 2.
- 28:55Out on the Yankee bullpen, Stan Bonson getting a little work in.
- 29:06Mon Bouquet ready with a 3-2 pitch to McAuliffe, and he struck him out swinging.
- 29:15Mon Bouquet's 26th strikeout of the year.
- 29:19This is the 10th start for the veteran right-hander.
- 29:24He has pitched two complete games, one 5, lost 3.
- 29:39The next batter is Mickey Stanley, the center fielder, right-hand hitter, batting 243.
- 29:45Swings on the curve, and he fouls it down and came back up and hit him while he was still in the batter's box,
- 29:49even though the ball rolled out in front of the plate in fair territory.
- 29:53It was a foul ball when it hit the batter.
- 30:01This is Mon Bouquet's second start against the Tigers.
- 30:04He beat them 2-1, beat Joe Sperma in New York.
- 30:08On April 28th, the first game of a doubleheader.
- 30:11As the line drives at the center field by Stanley, it's in for the base hit.
- 30:14Pepperton surrounds it.
- 30:16Stanley with a big turn, goes back in the first base.
- 30:35Now the right fielder, Jim Norbrook.
- 30:39Left-hander.
- 30:47Takes a cut and punches a foul ball off the first base side.
- 30:50It rolls out toward the Yankee bullpen where it is captured by Stan Bunsen.
- 31:08A cut in the move, looks to first base, Maddell holding against Norbrook, or rather against Stanley.
- 31:12And the pitch to Norbrook is low for a ball, 1-1.
- 31:19Catcher Bill Frean is waiting on deck.
- 31:25Yankees leading 4-0, bottom half of the first inning.
- 31:33Norbrook fouls one back toward the roof.
- 31:49Talking about the youngsters here today, they're seated mainly out in the left field stands,
- 31:54and in the center field stands, and the right center field stands, upper and lower decks.
- 32:01Stanley at first, the pitch to Norbrook, low, two balls and two strikes.
- 32:21Bombo to the set, and the pitch, swing, and a miss, he struck him out.
- 32:30Strikeout number two for Monbouquet, and the batter will be the catcher Bill Frean.
- 32:43Monbouquet won his 15th of the year, the second game of the doubleheader last Sunday against the Chicago White Sox.
- 32:51He won the ball, game seven to six.
- 32:58Bill Frean after the first pitch with the high fly ball to center.
- 33:02Roy Joe Pepitone is there, and Pepitone makes the catch to retire the side.
- 33:09No runs, one hit, there were no errors, and a man is left on.
- 33:13And at the end of one, the score is the Yankees four and the Tigers nothing.
- 33:18There's fun and excitement along the way as well as when you get there,
- 33:35when you fill up with Atlantic Imperial gasoline and follow the Imperial Road.
- 33:40Forget about how your car will run.
- 33:43Atlantic Imperial gasoline helps keep it running the way it was made to run, wherever you go.
- 33:52Your drive will come alive when you take the Imperial Road.
- 33:56Have more fun in your trip and get on the Imperial Road with Atlantic Imperial gasoline.
- 34:26That's Dobson ready to pitch to the top of the Yankee batting order.
- 34:35The Yankees batted around in the first inning, scoring four runs on six hits.
- 34:44Mars Clark will lead off.
- 34:57Clark and an infield hit.
- 35:00Getting off the first, looks at a pitch down low for a ball.
- 35:16Dobson, right-hander, kicks and draws.
- 35:19Kerr ball is laced foul toward the seats on the left side.
- 35:27Boy, Youngster down there playing that ball as it bounced off something in the stands,
- 35:31reached out with a glove, couldn't get it, but his buddy was there bare-handed,
- 35:34kept it from going on the field.
- 35:36Between the two of them, they saved the souvenir.
- 35:411-1 pitch to Clark.
- 35:43Look out, Harris, right under his chin.
- 35:46He's got two balls in one strike.
- 36:03Harris sends a little number on the first base side of the mound.
- 36:05Dobson picks it up, throws to Cash in time.
- 36:10Dobson had to throw low and away from Cash to keep from hitting Clark in the back with his throws.
- 36:15He was right over by the baseline, but he got the throw there in time.
- 36:19Retired Clark, one away, and it brings up Roy White.
- 36:24White forced Clark in the first inning after Harris let it off with a single.
- 36:38Dobson, no windup.
- 36:40Rocks and throws, foul ball peeled back toward the screen.
- 36:48And the applause is for the usher who takes care of the baseballs down on the field.
- 36:53He's got a little stool behind the plate, back by the stand.
- 36:58He had a little run for that one off the screen.
- 37:00One strike pitch to Clark.
- 37:02High, out to White, high ball, 1-1.
- 37:05Roy way up on the bat handle.
- 37:08Chokes up about three inches or so.
- 37:17Dobson's pitch, cut on, popped up on the right side.
- 37:21Coming over the second baseman McAuliffe, and the outfield grass makes the catch.
- 37:25Two down.
- 37:29And here is Mickey Mantle.
- 37:33Mickey in the first inning set a ground ball back through the legs of starter Les Kane.
- 37:39It went on through for a base hit.
- 37:44Mickey then came in to score the second run of the inning for the Yankees.
- 37:56Dobson rocks and throws. Mantle takes a ball up high.
- 38:18Dobson's pitch, strike over the inside corner of the knees.
- 38:24One and one to Mantle.
- 38:30We're in the top of the second.
- 38:36Swing and a miss by Mickey.
- 38:38One ball, two strikes.
- 38:40Yankees are leading 4-0.
- 38:42Start of the game delayed about, oh, I'd say 20 minutes because of rain.
- 38:47And the Yankees have the big top half of the first when they batted around.
- 38:54One-two pitch.
- 38:56Low. Two balls, two strikes.
- 39:07Ball got loose down in the Yankee bullpen where Bonson is still just loosening up leisurely.
- 39:20Halle Rodriguez is warming him up down there.
- 39:27Now Dobson in the move. Two-two to Mantle.
- 39:31High fly ball out into shallow right backing off second baseman McAuliffe coming in northward.
- 39:37It's McAuliffe all the way and he puts it away to retire the side.
- 39:41Well, the Yankees after batting around in the first go out in order here in the second.
- 39:45And at the end of one and a half innings the score is New York 4, Detroit nothing.
- 39:49Here she is, the ladybird of the cigar world, the White Owl Girl.
- 39:54Mmm, there's so many White Owl men up here. See that pitcher warming up?
- 39:59Nerves of piano wire. He's my choice to win the big game.
- 40:02He smokes White Owl Rangers, the tall, slim one. Pitches him.
- 40:07See that short fat guy in the bleachers?
- 40:09The one with the Beethoven sweatshirt blowing the bugle?
- 40:12Yeah. What if he smoked the White Owl Ranger?
- 40:15Well, at least he would stop blowing the bugle. Remember the day you quit playing baseball?
- 40:21Yeah, I remember. The manager was so happy he handed out White Owl New Yorkers to everybody.
- 40:25Naturally. It's the big cigar for the big moment.
- 40:29Big moment, huh?
- 40:31Say, last year a 20 game pitcher I know ran out of White Owl Invincibles.
- 40:35The cigar that makes you feel that way.
- 40:37How awful.
- 40:38That was the day he got knocked out in the first inning. Could it be that...
- 40:42You're right, Joe. You know you get a lot more from a White Owl than just smoke.
- 40:56Boston holds a 2-0 lead over Baltimore in the fourth inning. Washington leading Cleveland 1-0 in the fourth.
- 41:04Minnesota and Chicago scoreless in the fourth inning.
- 41:08So, some of the upper echelon clubs like the Orioles, the Tigers, and the Indians at the moment are in trouble.
- 41:17Here is Willie Hawkins to lead off the bottom half of the second.
- 41:23Willie was the big show for the Tigers last night.
- 41:26His home run, 14th of the year off Stottlemire, won the game for Detroit 1-0.
- 41:31He takes a strike from Mon Bouquet.
- 41:50Mon Bouquet's giving up three home runs this year.
- 41:55Time call by third base umpire Hank Soares. Again, a baseball got loose in the Yankee bullpen and the usher out there in the right field corner retreated.
- 42:03Mon Bouquet gave up a home run to repose.
- 42:06Brooks Robinson and Tom McCraw.
- 42:08Horton swings, sends a line drive out to left center field.
- 42:11It gets by Peppicon, bangs off the railing.
- 42:14Peppicon retrieves it and Horton gets into second base with a double.
- 42:28Line drive up the alley left center.
- 42:31So, Horton has face hit number two for the Tigers and his seventh two-bagger of the year.
- 42:41The batter is first baseman Norm Cash.
- 42:52Cash is getting 161. He had a hit last night. He went one for three.
- 43:02They shade him around to the right side on the infield. The outfield pretty much straight away.
- 43:07On both draws a curve that's fouled back over our broadcast booth.
- 43:13And it comes to rest somewhere in the upper deck.
- 43:18In somebody's pocket.
- 43:36We'll look for Horton at second.
- 43:37Mon Bouquet brings the hands together, the pitch.
- 43:40Slow curve drops in for strike two.
- 43:48Our broadcast booth here at Tiger Stadium almost hangs out over the plate.
- 43:52We're just off the third base side of the plate.
- 43:56Two-strike pitch outside trying to get Cash to reach for one.
- 44:15Horton at second, nobody out. A ball and two strikes to the left-hand hitting Norm Cash.
- 44:21Here comes the pitch inside, drives him back off the dish. Two balls, two strikes.
- 44:43Check swing, ground ball foul off the third base side.
- 44:47Cash was trying to fade away from an inside pitch, made contact down on the handle of the bat, and rolled it foul off third.
- 45:05As Cash comes back to the plate, we'll remind you that we'll be on the air at 1.25 tomorrow afternoon
- 45:12with the first game of the doubleheader between the Yankees and the Tigers.
- 45:17And of course we will broadcast both games of the doubleheader.
- 45:20Air time for the first one though is 1.25.
- 45:24Two balls, two strikes to Cash.
- 45:33Horton leads away from second.
- 45:35Duquette looks back. Now the pitch outside, ball three and a full count.
- 45:54Cash with a 1.61 batting average has hit two home runs.
- 45:57He has only seven runs batted in. Off to a very slow start this year for Detroit.
- 46:08Mon Bouquet straddles the rubber.
- 46:13Uses his left hand to flick away the perspiration. Takes it out of his glove.
- 46:18He's going to be charged with the ball by putting the right hand up that way.
- 46:28Now we're ready. Three-two pitch coming.
- 46:32Walked in, ball four. Mon Bouquet with a soft breaking pitch.
- 46:36Missed upstairs with it and Cash is on.
- 46:42First walk given up by Mon Bouquet.
- 46:44So the Tigers have runners at first and second, nobody out.
- 46:48And third baseman Don Wirt steps in.
- 46:57This day and time it is not common to see a couple of pretty good power hitters in an infield.
- 47:02But the Tigers, as we said earlier, have them in McAuliffe and Wirt.
- 47:06Baltimore can hit the home run ball. The pitch to Wirt. Strike on the inside corner of the letters.
- 47:18Ray Euler is not on deck.
- 47:300-1 pitch. Ground ball back to the box. Mon Bouquet throws to second for one. Clark back to first. It's a double play.
- 47:37Horton goes to third.
- 47:41The Yankees come up with the big double play. Going from the pitcher Mon Bouquet to Horace Clark to Mickey Mantle.
- 47:57Horton at third. Do-outs and Ray Euler of the shortstop steps in.
- 48:02Euler is a 167 hitter.
- 48:06One home run, eight runs batted in.
- 48:11He chokes well up on the bat handle. Right hand swinger.
- 48:16Swings in the first pitch, ground ball to third. Bobby Cox has it, makes his throw to Mickey and plenty of time to retire the side.
- 48:22So a big threat by the Tigers, but Mon Bouquet worked himself out of it.
- 48:26No runs. One hit. No errors and one man is left on base.
- 48:32At the end of two innings to score, the Yankees four and the Tigers nothing.
- 48:40We got a case of dodge fever.
- 48:43Hottemann and a pepper sprout.
- 48:46We've been talking about Charger.
- 48:50Ever since the car came out I'm going with Charger.
- 48:55I'm gonna make my move. Yeah.
- 48:59Yeah I'm going with Charger.
- 49:02Now you're in the groove.
- 49:05When I drive in my Charger, people gonna stop and stare.
- 49:12You're in the lead with the state and free. It's a shape down everywhere. Yeah, yeah.
- 49:18So you're Charger. Charger. Charger.
- 49:21And watch the trees grow. Charger. Charger. Charger.
- 49:24Well I'm going with Charger. Charger. Charger.
- 49:28That's the way to go. Charger. Charger.
- 49:31We got a case of dodge fever. Charger. Charger.
- 49:35Hottemann and a pepper sprout.
- 49:37Andy Cosco will lead off the top of the third inning for New York.
- 49:54Cosco stood out there by the plate and watched right-hander Dobson throw his warm-up pitches.
- 50:00Then as Dobson finished the warm-up throws, Cosco went back to the on-deck circle to get the rosin bag.
- 50:06He snaps a look down to Crocetti before he steps in.
- 50:11Cosco beat out an infield hit in the first inning.
- 50:14Batted in a run and he also scored a run.
- 50:24Yankees laid 4-0.
- 50:31Dobson's first pitch outside. Ball in.
- 50:47There's a ground ball slowly hit to the first base side of the mound.
- 50:50It's a race between Dobson and Cosco and Dobson beats him.
- 50:57Ball was hit slowly to the first base side of the mound.
- 50:59Norm Cash had swung over to play the ball.
- 51:02Pat Dobson fielded it though and with nobody covering first, he had to race Cosco for the bag, but Dobson got there first.
- 51:09So there's one out and the batter will be Joe Papaton.
- 51:16Played on fire. Johnny Stevens calls for the baseball.
- 51:21Looks it over, rubs it up, now decides that it is not playable anymore.
- 51:39Papaton had a single line drive to center field in the first inning. Takes a strike line.
- 52:01Dobson throws low. One ball, one strike.
- 52:08Boston in the fifth inning leads Baltimore 3-1.
- 52:13In the fifth inning at Cleveland, the Senators 2, the Indians nothing.
- 52:19Pitch is downstairs.
- 52:24Two balls to strike.
- 52:26Twins and the White Sox are in the fifth inning. Scoreless.
- 52:32Here's the 2-1 to Joe Papaton. Low again, ball three.
- 52:49Yankees setting on a 4-0 lead here in the third.
- 52:55Foul ball bounced first base side.
- 53:01Full count, 3-2 to Papaton.
- 53:23Dobson works over the rosin bag. Now looks in the free end.
- 53:31Kicks and draws. There's a high fly ball out in the shallow center behind the bag at second.
- 53:37McCallup, the second baseman, is there and makes the catch.
- 53:44Papaton flies out to McCallup, two down.
- 53:48The batter is Tommy Tresh.
- 54:01Tresh had a single his first time up and batted in a run.
- 54:04It's 18th RBI of the year.
- 54:10Takes a pitch outside, ball one.
- 54:24Dobson deals. A strike is called and a breaking pitch.
- 54:42There's a drive deep right field, but it is curving foul.
- 54:46Off the facing above the upper deck here at Tiger Stadium, but foul.
- 54:55Tresh got the fat part of the bat on it, but it was full foul.
- 54:59Down the right field line here at Tiger Stadium, it is 325 feet to the foul ball.
- 55:05Down the left field line, it is 340, so the left-hand hitters get a bit of a break.
- 55:17One ball, two strikes to Tresh.
- 55:20Fastball struck him out swinging.
- 55:24Three up, three down go the Yankees for the second inning in a row against Pat Dobson.
- 55:28And now at the end of two and a half, the score is New York 4, Detroit nothing.

- 56:37On New York Yankee baseball, let's pause for station identification.
- 56:41Join me, Bill Edwardson, weekday mornings, 7 to 10, here on WGY, 10 on your dials connected.
- 57:00Bottom half of the third inning here at Tiger Stadium.
- 57:04And the pitcher, Pat Dobson, leads off for Detroit.
- 57:06He's a right-hand batter, looks at the first pitch for a called strike.
- 57:17Monbequette winds, steals, ground ball, right back to the pitcher.
- 57:21Monbeau has it on a big hop, throws it over to Maddell in time to get Dobson.
- 57:29One up, one down, and we go to the top of the Tiger order
- 57:32for Dick McCullough, the second baseman.
- 57:36Monbequette struck him out in the first inning after going behind 3-0.
- 57:54Strike on the outside corner.
- 57:58Bobby Cox is pulled in on the grass at third against the left-hand hitting McCullough.
- 58:03Trash at short fades way around toward the bag.
- 58:06Clark plays him deep and over to the hole.
- 58:09Next pitch, outside.
- 58:11One ball, one strike.
- 58:14The outfield plays McCullough almost straight away,
- 58:18although Pepitone in center is fairly shallow.
- 58:22There's a foul ball back toward the upper deck.
- 58:31For second of two, Jake Gibbs and play-dumb by Johnny Stevens
- 58:34look like they were going to dance down there.
- 58:36Gibbs wanted to come back for that one.
- 58:38Stevens didn't give ground because he realized it was well out of play.
- 58:42Next pitch, low.
- 58:44The count goes to 2-2 on McCullough.
- 58:58He reaches out and lines a base hit to left field.
- 59:01Roy White charging in quickly.
- 59:04McCullough is in the lead.
- 59:07He reaches out and lines a base hit to left field. Roy White charging in quickly.
- 59:12McCullough makes a big swing around first and goes back.
- 59:16It's all a single for McCullough and the Tigers' third hit of the game.
- 59:24Monbouchette working the ball away from McCullough.
- 59:28And Dick reached out for it and drilled it to left.
- 59:37Now Mickey Stanley, who had a single to center field his first time up.
- 59:46Swings in the first pitch, looks a high fly ball out of the shadow right.
- 59:50It could be trouble. It's going to fall foul and out of the reach of Costco.
- 59:55That ball was way up in the air.
- 59:59Parks Clark and Andy Costco both running for it, but neither one could reach it and it fell foul.
- 1:00:10Yankees do not play Stanley to go to right field.
- 1:00:13Costco is well over toward the right center field alley and is back in the same spot.
- 1:00:19A lot of ground in right field for Stanley.
- 1:00:26One strike pitch, line drive past Cox in the left field base hit.
- 1:00:31Roy White gets to the ball quickly, fires into third and he holds McCullough at second on Stanley's line single or left.
- 1:00:43So again the Tigers build a threat in this ball game with runners at first and second, one out.
- 1:00:49The batter will be Jim Northrup, the right fielder and the left hand hitter.
- 1:00:54Northrup hitting about his own level, 250. That is just about his career total, but he's way ahead of his home run base the prior years.
- 1:01:14He takes the ball up high. The Tigers have found some unexpected power.
- 1:01:19Northrup has hit seven home runs already this year.
- 1:01:25His best year for homers with Detroit in 1966, he had 16 all year.
- 1:01:34So he's keeping his average level and well ahead of his long ball face.
- 1:01:39Monbow checks second for McCullough. The pitch to Northrup, there's a fly ball out in the center field.
- 1:01:45Pepperton moves back, gets under it, McCullough tags up at second base. Pepperton makes the catch, both runners are going.
- 1:01:51Joe comes into second but not in time.
- 1:01:55McCullough goes to third and Stanley into second base after the catch in deep center field.
- 1:02:10Tigers figuring that Pepperton's throwing arm might not be completely strengthened from the break he suffered earlier this year.
- 1:02:21So they had both runners tag up and move.
- 1:02:28As it turned out, it was a good move because now two batter in scoring position.
- 1:02:33There are two outs and the batter is Bill Preen.
- 1:02:44Preen flied out the center his first time up.
- 1:02:52Full wind up by Monbow, the pitch over but low, ball one.
- 1:03:07Sky is much brighter now.
- 1:03:12Although it is still overcast.
- 1:03:181-0 to Preen, high. He had a notion to go for that one but unchecked his swing.
- 1:03:25Made that little pitch.
- 1:03:29Pitch was right up in his eyes. Two balls, no strikes.
- 1:03:43Preen right now is hitting above his career average, 280.
- 1:03:48Pitch to him. Line drive from the field, they get two runs in, one score. Here's Roy White, throw toward the plate. Stanley scores.
- 1:04:08Preen with a line drive, single to left field, brings home McCullough and Stanley.
- 1:04:14Now you see the value of tagging up after the fly ball went by Monbow.
- 1:04:21It resulted in two runs instead of just one for the Tigers.
- 1:04:27Preen has his 27th and 28th runs about at the end of the year. The Yankees are leading 4-2.
- 1:04:34The batter will be Willie Wharton who doubled his first time out.
- 1:04:53Wharton has never hit 300 in a full season in the majors. Fouls a pitch back.
- 1:05:05However, right now he is batting 317. He has 14 home runs.
- 1:05:15His best year in the majors so far has been 1965 when he hit 273.
- 1:05:34That'll not holding against Preen at first base and the one strike pitch to Wharton, long away with a breaking ball, one and one.
- 1:05:49Wharton missed 43 games last year with injuries to his Achilles tendon.
- 1:05:55An operation after the season and now it's just about sound again.
- 1:06:05One pitch going, inside, putting him back. Two balls, one strike.
- 1:06:30Long look at starts the move, checks freehand, deals the plate, foul ball back to the base of the screen.
- 1:06:37Two and two.
- 1:06:58A lot of boy scouts and tub scouts out here this afternoon too among these 15,000 or so youngsters.
- 1:07:05They got their batters identifying their backs.
- 1:07:09Ground ball foul, third base side. Bobby Cox got to it behind the back but it was fouled by a foot.
- 1:07:16Feel freehand bouncing along and raced all the way to second. Gallops back to first base.
- 1:07:44Two and two. The count to Wharton. Here's the pitch.
- 1:07:48Hopped up on the right side, mantle backing off, Clark coming over. Who's it going to be? Clark calls for it and makes the catch just inside the foul line to retire Wharton and the Tigers.
- 1:07:58But Detroit comes up with two runs on three base hits. There were no Yankees errors and one man is left on.
- 1:08:05So at the end of three full innings the score is New York four and Detroit two.
- 1:08:16Totals in this game for the Tigers. Two runs five, it's no errors. For the Yankees four runs six, it's no errors.
- 1:08:24Elsewhere it's Boston three, Baltimore one on the bottom half of the fifth inning.
- 1:08:27Bruce Howard has replaced Rob Bender on the hill for Baltimore. Rico Patricile and Ken Harrelson of Homer for Boston.
- 1:08:35Now Harrelson's Homer has come in the fifth inning with a man on and Boston now leads as we get the fifth inning score five to one.
- 1:08:42Boston five, Baltimore one, end of five. For Harrelson his tenth home run of the year. Washington two, Cleveland nothing at the end of four.
- 1:08:53Dan McMullen added Washington's second run with his tenth home run of the year with the bases empty in the fourth.
- 1:08:58Boseman against Williams. Minnesota and Chicago still scoreless in the bottom half of the sixth inning.
- 1:09:03Dean Chance pitching for Minnesota. Cisco Carlos for the Chicago White Sox.
- 1:09:07And in a twilight game California will play at Oakland.
- 1:09:11Over in the National League the New York Mets lead the St. Louis Cardinals three to one at the end of four innings at Shea Stadium in New York.
- 1:09:18Ray Washburn started for St. Louis and Nolan Ryan for the Mets.
- 1:09:25That is the only National League game underway. Later this afternoon San Francisco plays at Los Angeles and tonight Atlanta at Pittsburgh, Chicago at Houston and Cincinnati at Philadelphia to round out the schedule.
- 1:09:39Four to two Yankees lead end of three. We go to the top of the fourth.
- 1:09:43Bobby Cox will lead it off.
- 1:09:46Cox had a hit and a run about it in in the first inning.
- 1:09:49Takes an inside pitch for a ball one.
- 1:09:55Dobson has now faced the side. Cox was the first man to bat against him.
- 1:10:02Down low ball one. A ball two. Two balls no strikes.
- 1:10:11Les King started for Detroit. Faced six batters. Gave up five base hits and was charged with all four runs.
- 1:10:20Cox takes a strike. He is shortened up on the bat handle.
- 1:10:23Fod was looking at the pitch all the way.
- 1:10:26Two and one.
- 1:10:37After the base hit by Cox Dobson retired eight men in a row.
- 1:10:45High pop up near the mound coming in the second baseman. McAuliffe on the infield grass makes the catch.
- 1:10:55Well Dobson has now retired nine in a row.
- 1:11:00With only Jake Gibbs hitting the ball to the outfield.
- 1:11:05Since Dobson came on the pitch there have been four pop ups to the second baseman McAuliffe.
- 1:11:13Here's Gibbs. Fly to left field his first time up.
- 1:11:22Ball one down low. Even though that ball was caught by the left fielder Horton it was not deep.
- 1:11:27Very shallow in left field. In fact so shallow that the umpires had rolled at an infield fly.
- 1:11:35One oh to him. Swing and a miss.
- 1:11:40One ball one strike.
- 1:11:52Yankees four runs six hits. Tigers two runs five hits. There have been no errors in the game.
- 1:12:01Dobson steps back on the left foot. Kicks and draws. Gibbs swings and misses. And the count is one and two.
- 1:12:13You look down there and see Gibbs and Prian standing there at the plate.
- 1:12:17Two good football players in their college days. Gibbs at Ole Miss. Prian at Michigan.
- 1:12:22Prian only played a couple of years though. He signed a baseball contract after his sophomore year.
- 1:12:29Gibbs punches one down the first base side. The race is on again and Gibbs is out.
- 1:12:34As Cash makes a diving stab at the bag and Gibbs is carrying the argument now to Bill Kinnaman.
- 1:12:41Gibbs and Whitey Ford protest the call. Gibbs thought he had it beaten. So did Whitey.
- 1:12:51Kinnaman says no. Norm Cash fielded that ball about five feet from the bag and doled for first and stabbed it with his glove.
- 1:13:09He's down and Bill Manbouket steps in at the plate. Takes time first to knock the mud out of his fleece with the barrel end of the bat.
- 1:13:26Manbouket steps away and takes a fastball down low. Ball one.
- 1:13:39Thompson's next pitch. Strike at the knees on the outside corner.
- 1:13:56One-one offering. Swing and a miss. Strike two.
- 1:14:18Thompson rocks and throws. Manbou fouls one back into the upper deck behind the plate.
- 1:14:31He stands here at Tiger Stadium. Rise rather steeply. Some excellent views of the ballgame.
- 1:14:42Pretty close to the action. Now the one-two to Manbouket. Strike three is called. Curveball dropped in and Manbouket is called out.
- 1:14:52So for the third inning in a row, Pat Dobson, one-two-three with the Yankees.
- 1:14:57And at the end of three and a half innings, the score is New York four and Detroit two.
- 1:15:03A man's face needs protection shave after shave. And AeroShave protects with its special skin and beard conditioners.
- 1:15:20Your face looks better, feels better too.
- 1:15:23If you're a college man with a desire to fly, which do you want to be? Aviation specialist or leader of men?
- 1:15:41As a Marine aviator, you will be both. Given the time-tested ways of Marine leadership and the finest flight training on Earth,
- 1:15:47leadership and flight, they're inseparable for the man who wears the wings of gold of Marine aviation and the bars of the Marine officer.
- 1:15:55Win the Eco-Globe and anchor of the United States Marine.
- 1:16:12Well, Pat Dobson has displayed some excellent pitching since coming on in relief of Les Kane.
- 1:16:17The Yankees have not been able to touch him.
- 1:16:20Meanwhile, the Tigers have been packing away at the four-nothing lead.
- 1:16:24It is now four to two, New York. And Norm Cash, Don Word, and Ray Aller will be coming up here in the bottom half of the fourth.
- 1:16:32Cash, the first baseman, drew a walk his first time up.
- 1:16:37The only walk given up by Mon Bouquet in this game.
- 1:16:45That's about far for Mon Bouquet, one walk a ballgame.
- 1:16:54Cash pushes a bunt down the third baseline. Mon Bouquet has it, makes his throw, got him out at first base.
- 1:17:02A lot of action all of a sudden as Norm Cash pushed a bunt down the third baseline. It looked like a dandy.
- 1:17:08But Mon Bouquet, with some excellent fielding, got to it quickly, fired to Mantle. His throw got there on one hop.
- 1:17:15Mantle had to play it on the short hop, but he played it neatly at first and Cash is out.
- 1:17:26And now Don Worth. Worth bounced into a double play in the second inning.
- 1:17:35He takes a strike. Hey, the big man's at it again. He started off the month of June with a home run.
- 1:17:41We're talking about Frank Hart. It just hit his 20th for the Senators in the sixth inning at Cleveland to give Washington now a three-to-one lead.
- 1:17:51Worth leans away from a high pitch, one ball, one strike.
- 1:18:00Well, Howard hit 15 home runs in the month of May, three shy of the one-month record set by Rudy York years ago, but he started off June with a home run.
- 1:18:09Switch to Worth, line drive to the shot stop, trash shoes, snags it for out number two.
- 1:18:24Two down and nobody on, and here is Ray Orler. His first time up, he ground it out to Bobby Cox, and that ground ball ended a Tiger threat in the second.
- 1:18:38Wind up in the pitch, check swing, strike call.
- 1:18:52Your first base coach, Wally Moses, shouting down, hang in there, Ray.
- 1:19:05Wind up by Mon Bouquet, one strike pitch, swing, and a missed strike two.
- 1:19:29O2 offering outside, try to make him bite. A ball and two strikes.
- 1:19:45Foul ball back toward the roof.
- 1:19:55Tiger Ray Orler is good for about one home run a year, and he's already hit his home run for this year. He had one last year, one the year before.
- 1:20:03Had eight in his major league career. His pitch, foul ball, grounded off the third base line.
- 1:20:19And ball bounced off the railing in front of the seats back to Bobby Cox, and he wasn't sure what to do with it.
- 1:20:25Wanted to throw it to Mon Bouquet, and then he started to throw it to Cucinello, the third base coach for the Tigers. Finally, Hank Saw said, here, I'll take it.
- 1:20:33Saw looked it over and tossed it out of play.
- 1:20:43One, two, pitch coming. Drew his bat at it, popped it up on the right side. Mickey Mantle calling for it. The McUndra makes the catch over his head, and the side is retired.
- 1:20:54Saw Mon Bouquet, for the first time in the game, gets the Tigers out in order. And at the end of four, the score, the Yankees four and the Tigers two.
- 1:21:09Atlantic keeps your car on the go. Atlantic keeps your car on the go. There is so much you can see. The view is fine and it's free.
- 1:21:32There's more to driving than simply getting there when your car runs the way it was made to run. Atlantic Imperial Gasoline helps it do just that along the Imperial Road.
- 1:21:48Wherever you hit the road, make it the Imperial Road. Every road you travel becomes the Imperial Road with Atlantic Imperial Gasoline.
- 1:22:10They go to the top of the fifth and the top of the order for the Yankees. Pat Dobson has done an excellent job in relief for Detroit. He has retired 11 men in a row.
- 1:22:21He came on in the first inning after Les Kane had faced six men and retired only one.
- 1:22:32First man Dobson pitched to Bobby Cox, drilled a single to bat in a run, but then he has retired 11 straight since then, and here's Clark.
- 1:22:40Harris runs opposite to Bont and takes the pitch low for a ball.
- 1:22:49And in those 11 men retired, four of them have popped up to the second baseman and only Jake Gibbs has punched the ball out of the infield.
- 1:22:57And then he draws, curveball, swung on and missed. One ball, one strike.
- 1:23:13And then the Yankees have gone on to pitch, swung on and missed again, strike two.
- 1:23:28Yankees scored their four runs on six singles by Clark, Maddow, Costco, Papaton, Tresh, and Cox.
- 1:23:35Third strikeout for Pat Dobson.
- 1:23:44Roy White reached on a fielder's choice in the first inning, scored the first of the four Yankee runs.
- 1:23:50Then in the second inning, he popped up.
- 1:23:59Dobson's curve is in the dirt, ball one.
- 1:24:17Next pitch, strike is called, and it's one ball, one strike.
- 1:24:35Bow ball, back of the screen on a fastball. A ball and two strikes to Roy White.
- 1:24:57Dobson fires, high, two and two. Roger Mayo Smith a little bit strapped for starting pitchers right now with Earl Wilson.
- 1:25:08Up with a lame foot, maybe getting an eye fall with this Pat Dobson out there.
- 1:25:13This is, I'm sure, the father's he's gone this year. He pitched only 12 innings in 10 appearances before this game.
- 1:25:20He may be eyeing him as a starter. Two-two. Shack swing and a foul tip is caught by Freyann.
- 1:25:28Strike three. Roy White is out on strikes.
- 1:25:32Strikeout number four for Dobson on New York Yankee baseball. Let's pause for station identification.
- 1:25:38Hi, this is Jerry Ducey. Join me for my telephone talk show, weeknights here at 810 and Udial, WGY Schenectady.
- 1:25:46Mickey Mantle the batter.
- 1:25:56Mick is one for two. Scored one run. Takes the curve for a call. Strike one.
- 1:26:16Two outs and nobody on. In field, back deep to the right side. Mantle fouls one back.
- 1:26:25Dick McAuliffe, the second baseman, plays Mantle about, oh, I'd say five or six feet back in the grass.
- 1:26:31Very, very deep. The Tigers do not overship the infield on Mickey.
- 1:26:37They leave Euler the shortstop over on the third base side of second.
- 1:26:44Outfield gives up both foul lines, playing him as a straightaway hitter.
- 1:26:50He pops one high in the air on the left side, chasing at Don Worth, the third baseman, and he cannot get it.
- 1:26:59Ball fell in front of him. May have got a glove on it.
- 1:27:04He had his back to the plate when he started running for that one.
- 1:27:09When the ball came down, his back was still to the plate. There will be no errors, no plays.
- 1:27:24Love All's two strikes to Mantle.
- 1:27:41Thompson ready. Here it comes. Outside. One-two.
- 1:27:58With all the youngsters out here today, constant chatter in the background.
- 1:28:07Here's a pitch coming. There's a drive deep to right field. If it's a fair ball, it's a home run, and it is a foul ball.
- 1:28:14Oh, it just missed the foul ball by an inch.
- 1:28:22A line drive to the seats and right that couldn't have missed the foul ball by more than an inch.
- 1:28:30Bill Kinnaman called it immediately, and Mantle would have started down the first baseline, saw it, saw it forward.
- 1:28:38Just missed the foul ball.
- 1:28:44Thompson can heal a sigh of relief.
- 1:28:57Again, the one-two pitch in the dirt this time. Two balls and two strikes.
- 1:29:06From our vantage point, we look right down the first base and right field line, and that's by more than, oh, just inches or less.
- 1:29:20Two-two pitch. Ball three outside.
- 1:29:41Three-two pitch coming. Mickey swings and Mickey strikes three. That's out from strikes out the side. He now has five strikeouts in the game.
- 1:29:50The Yankees go three up, three down, and at the end of four and a half innings, the score is New York 4, Detroit 2.
- 1:29:58Tipperillo asked the American people what they thought of the world's first menthol cigar. New Tipperillo M with menthol.
- 1:30:08Pardon me, Punchy. I'd like a great fighter's opinion. How do you think a menthol cigar sounds?
- 1:30:14A menthol cigar?
- 1:30:19My friend, how do you think a menthol cigar sounds?
- 1:30:28Then we got wise and didn't mention our cigar was menthol.
- 1:30:32Excuse me, sir. Before you go, would you like to try this new cigar? If it's free, buddy.
- 1:30:38Here, let me light it for you. You like it?
- 1:30:41Yeah, I like it.
- 1:30:42It is great.
- 1:30:43I like it? You really like it?
- 1:30:44I told you I like it. I like it. Yeah, it's a great cigar. It's cool. It's mild. What did you say it was called again?
- 1:30:49Well, I guess we'll have to call it the great taste. It sounds terrible. New Tipperillo M with menthol.
- 1:30:55Hey, buddy, were you in a fight? You look terrible.
- 1:31:01Well, we've reached the four and a half inning mark, and that means I'm going to step out of here and Phil Rosito is going to come in.
- 1:31:07Phil, the way that Pat Dobson is pitching out there, Mayo Smith may have started the wrong man today.
- 1:31:13Well, that's right, Frank. I was thinking a lot of times pitchers get their big break when they're put in when they least expect it.
- 1:31:19And that's got to be the longest that Dobson has pitched all year.
- 1:31:22Because prior to today, he had worked in 10 games and only pitched 12 innings.
- 1:31:26All right, here's Dobson up there now swings and misses at a curve, strike one.
- 1:31:31He actually waved at that curve ball. It wasn't a good cut.
- 1:31:36This is only the third official at bat for Dobson this year. All right and better.
- 1:31:42Whoop, just outside one on one Mambo wanted that one.
- 1:31:51On deck, Dick McCallough. Foul, back upstairs and out of play.
- 1:32:01One and two the count. Yankees picked up all four runs in the first inning.
- 1:32:09And as a matter of fact, picked up all six of their bases that they have in the game in the first inning.
- 1:32:16And that's retired the last 14 men in a row. Curve, ground ball in the hole, base hit the left field for Dobson.
- 1:32:25He looked real bad on one curve ball and then hit that curve for a single left.
- 1:32:31And that's the sixth hit for Detroit.
- 1:32:46So the Tigers have McCallough up there. McCallough struck out in the first inning, dunked a single in a short left field in the third.
- 1:32:54The Tigers scored one run in the ball game.
- 1:33:02Fluff is over. Strike one call.
- 1:33:09Never thought we'd play this ball game today the way it rained.
- 1:33:13Rained all morning and just up till game time and then suddenly stopped.
- 1:33:19The pitch, strike two. Both pitches over the outside part of the plate. Nothing and two.
- 1:33:26Time is called. A rubber ball was thrown out. Pepperton picks it up, throws in the infield.
- 1:33:33Actually looks like more like a softball. And Clark flips it into the Yankee dugout.
- 1:33:38That's what it was, a softball.
- 1:33:45Yankees lead four to two in the bottom of the fifth.
- 1:33:51Dobson leading off first. Pitch to McCallough outside. Slow curve ball, one and two.
- 1:34:01Metzel leading the Cardinals four to one in the sixth inning.
- 1:34:14On deck, Mickey Stanley. Mambo stretches. Foul back off the screen.
- 1:34:24Still one and two.
- 1:34:40Mambo Kitt gets the sign from Gibbs. Mantle playing in back of the runner at first.
- 1:34:45The pitch is popped in the air to short right field. And Costco cannot get it.
- 1:34:50Falls in for a base hit.
- 1:34:56Lars Clark gave up on the ball.
- 1:35:02And McCallough just cloaked it in a short right field.
- 1:35:07The Tigers now with runners at first and second. Nobody out. They trail four to two.
- 1:35:12And Mickey Stanley, who is two for two. Single at center and single at left.
- 1:35:18Julie Womack gets up quickly in the Yankee bullpen.
- 1:35:22Yankees looking for the sacrifice here. Mantle in at first. Cox in at third.
- 1:35:29Somebody's got to hold that Dobson a little closer at second base if they want to force him at third.
- 1:35:33The pitch. Stanley ready to swing. Takes the strike.
- 1:35:43Donnie Cucinello coaching at third giving the signs. Wally Moses at first.
- 1:35:52Mambo ready. Stanley squares. Bunch the ball. A beauty down at first base.
- 1:35:58Close to Clark in time. Nice play by Clark as he had a fall down to make the catch on the wide throw by Mambo.
- 1:36:05But it advances the runners. Beautiful bunt by Stanley. The play goes one to four.
- 1:36:13And the batter now Jim Northrup. Northrup struck out in the first.
- 1:36:17Fly deep to center in the third.
- 1:36:21Yankees have McCallup at second. Dobson at third with one out. The Yankees leading four to two.
- 1:36:32Infield playing back.
- 1:36:40A wind up by Mambo. His pitch pops in the air to shallow right field.
- 1:36:45Costco coming in. The runners tagging. He makes the catch. He's left coming to throw right on the money.
- 1:36:51Beautiful throw by Costco right on the plate. But Dobson only came in a couple of steps and went back.
- 1:37:00So the runners remain at second and third and now Bill Freyhan who is driven into two runs for Detroit with a line single to left in the third inning.
- 1:37:07And the first inning he fly to center.
- 1:37:13And now Gibbs wants to go out and talk with Mambo Kett.
- 1:37:17I'm sure they're not going to put Freyhan on because in back of Freyhan is that man Willie Horton.
- 1:37:23And those Freyhan is dangerous. Horton is even more so.
- 1:37:38So Gibbs and Mambo break up the huddle.
- 1:37:46Red Sox leading Baltimore five to one in the seventh. Washington leads Cleveland six to one in the seventh.
- 1:37:52Frank Howard has hit his 20th home of the year. Minnesota, Chicago no score in the eighth.
- 1:37:58LeMets leading the Cardinals four to one in the seventh. All the other action at night in the National League.
- 1:38:06All right here's the windup. Pitch to Freyhan inside ball one.
- 1:38:12Freyhan asks Stevens to look at the ball. Johnny says it's OK.
- 1:38:17Freyhan wears a knee pad on his left arm high on the left arm near the muscle.
- 1:38:23He gets hit so often that he crowds the plate. Last year he led the league in getting hit with pitch balls.
- 1:38:33Thompson at third McCallup at second with two outs. Womack continues to throw in the Yankee bullpen.
- 1:38:42Here's the windup. The pitch is over. Strike called one on one.
- 1:38:56Watch Willie Horton swinging that weighted bat down below. He swings it with one hand just his left hand.
- 1:39:01And quite often he hits with just that one hand when he's pulled on a pitch.
- 1:39:05But he still gets a lot of wood on him. All right the one one pitch low ball two to one.
- 1:39:22Mambo taking a little extra time. Tough spot right here. The potential tying runs on base at second and third.
- 1:39:29Two outs. A 2-1 count on Freyhan. The Yankees leading 4-2. We're in the bottom of the fifth inning.
- 1:39:34They're at Tigers Stadium in the motor city of Detroit. The pitch. Ground ball is short.
- 1:39:39Fresh up with it. Fires to Mandel in time for the out. They get the dangerous Freyhan.
- 1:39:45No runs, two hits, no Yankee errors and two men left. And at the end of five full innings the Yankees 4-2 the Tigers.
- 1:39:54If your car is inclined to stall and idle roughly or if it doesn't accelerate as it should,
- 1:40:00there's not much comfort in the fact that a lot of other drivers are having the same problem.
- 1:40:04But cheer up. Thousands of drivers have found the way to solve that problem.
- 1:40:09They use Atlantic Imperial, the clean carburetor gasoline.
- 1:40:14You see stalling, rough idling and poor acceleration are often caused by dirt deposits
- 1:40:20with some gasoline allowed to build up in the throttle plate area of your carburetor.
- 1:40:25And it takes only a few tankfuls of Atlantic Imperial to dissolve stubborn throttle plate deposits
- 1:40:31and wash them harmlessly away. Then as you continue to use Atlantic Imperial, it helps prevent their return.
- 1:40:38So come on. Get on the Imperial Road. The road that leads to smooth engine performance with Atlantic Imperial.
- 1:40:47The clean carburetor gasoline.
- 1:40:55At the top of the sixth inning we'll see Costco, Pepitone and Trash facing Pat Dobson.
- 1:41:00And as Dobson has just about been letter perfect since he relieved Les Can in the first inning,
- 1:41:07he faced Bobby Cox Cox, single right field, off Dobson and since then he's retired 14 Yankees in a row.
- 1:41:16Striking out the last four in a row. Mambo Kett, Clark, White and Mantle, he has struck out in order.
- 1:41:23Costco beat out an infield single in the first inning, got credit for a run batted in, later scored,
- 1:41:28and then hit back to the box in the third. And on that play Dobson made a fine play.
- 1:41:32Had to go to his left picket up and race to the bag for the unassisted put out, just beating Costco.
- 1:41:57Costco steps into the batter's box.
- 1:42:04And he looks good up there, even without swinging. Pops it up. McCall back, Northrop in and let's see.
- 1:42:13Northrop calls and makes the catch. He was a little leery of running into McCall, but Dick got out of the way.
- 1:42:19One away. As Dobson continues to set the Yankees down in order, here's Peppertown. Joe line the single to center in the first inning,
- 1:42:28driving a run. Pops the second and the third. All right, Dobson. Line's pitch to Joe is a curve over strike call.
- 1:42:49And this Dobson is coming from right over the top, strictly overhand.
- 1:43:01Another curve over strike two. Eleven thousand two hundred and thirty-seven paid today.
- 1:43:15Twenty one thousand eight hundred and fifty-nine is the total. The rest are youngsters here.
- 1:43:21The two strike pitch, another curve, this one high. One ball, two strikes.
- 1:43:28Tommy Trash on deck.
- 1:43:36Pat Dobson gets the sign from Bill Freyant.
- 1:43:40No wind up delivery. Ground ball, Cash backhands the ball upward and flips the Dobson in time. Beautiful play by Cash.
- 1:43:48He took a base hit away from Peppertown last night on a diving sliding catch and he does it again here.
- 1:43:56So it's two out and the batter Tommy Trash. Tommy single to center in the first inning, driving in a run, struck out in the third.
- 1:44:05And he's got all four runs and all six hits in the first inning.
- 1:44:13Sixteen men in a row, Dobson has sat down.
- 1:44:21His pitch in the dirt gets away from Freyant, ball one.
- 1:44:31On deck, Bobby Cox.
- 1:44:40Outfield deep straight away on Tommy. Dobson's curve is low, ball two, two and nothing.
- 1:44:50Home cash, guards that line against the left-hand batter.
- 1:44:58Pat Dobson chewing that bubble gum out on the mound. His pitch, a bounce of foul off Tommy's foot.
- 1:45:04Why'd he ford up with it in the coaching box and he wants the umpire to take a look at it.
- 1:45:09Tommy, who does that quite often, hasn't done much of that this year.
- 1:45:13And pretty soon we'll probably see Tommy wearing that extra protection.
- 1:45:18A little miniature shin guard that covers the top part of your foot and part of the shin.
- 1:45:27Tommy's still outside the batter's box trying to put a little weight on the ball of the right foot.
- 1:45:34Now he gets set in the batter's box.
- 1:45:40Four to two, the Yankees lead in the top of the sixth with two out, nobody on.
- 1:45:47Swing and a miss, two balls, two strikes.
- 1:46:02Dobson ready for his two-two delivery.
- 1:46:06There it is, it's a curve low, full count, three and two.
- 1:46:12Dobson has had very few three and two counts on the head. He's been ahead of most of them.
- 1:46:24Now the payoff pitch, low ball four. So that breaks the string of consecutive outs by Pat Dobson.
- 1:46:32His first walk, the first walk any Yankee has gotten in the ball game.
- 1:46:37He had retired 16 men in a row before walking trash.
- 1:46:41Here's Bobby Koch, single right and the first to drive in a run, the pop to second and the four.
- 1:46:49First base runner for the Yankees since the first inning.
- 1:46:57Jake Gibbs on deck, Norm Cash holding the bag against trash. Here's the stretch.
- 1:47:02The pitch is low ball one.
- 1:47:11Lights have been on here since the start of the ball game and it's a wonder that they were able to start the game with all the rain we had.
- 1:47:19Tommy Trash leading away.
- 1:47:24Pitch is a strike call just about knee high, one and one.
- 1:47:43McCall of the shading cuts over towards second base. Throw to first base, trash back in plenty of time.
- 1:47:58Dobson stretches. His pitcher bounces slowly to third. White will have to hurry. Up with it.
- 1:48:04Fires the first in time to get caught by a strike.
- 1:48:09The Yankees nothing across, one man left and at the end of five and a half innings it's the Yankees for Detroit two.
- 1:48:18The traveling smooth on the Imperial Road with Atlantic Imperial to make the going more fun.
- 1:48:25That may seem like a lot to expect from a gasoline, but Atlantic Imperial isn't just any gasoline, it's the clean carburetor gasoline.
- 1:48:34It cleans your carburetor as you drive and keeps it clean. That can do a lot to increase your driving pleasure because dirt deposits in the throttle plate area are a common cause of stalling, rough idling and poor acceleration.
- 1:48:48Problems you shouldn't have to put up with. Atlantic Imperial won't tolerate troublesome throttle plate deposits. It dissolves them and washes them harmlessly away.
- 1:48:57Then wherever you drive, you're on the Imperial Road where every trip's a pleasure trip. So come on in. Get on the Imperial Road with Atlantic Imperial, the clean carburetor gasoline.
- 1:49:10The bottom of the sixth inning we'll see Willie Horton, Norm Cash and Don Wert to face Mambo. Horton double a left center in the second inning, popped his second in the third.
- 1:49:31Yankee scored four runs in the first inning. The Tigers scored their two runs in the third. That's been all the scoring in the ballgame. Starting to get a little overcast now.
- 1:49:51Willie Horton steps in. Horton coming on strong. Fourteen home is 30 RBI. He's six and back of the big guy now. Frank Howard will hit his 20th today.
- 1:50:05High and inside, ball one. Bill Mambo-Kitt taking plenty of time out in the mound. His pitch is hit high in the air, the left center field, Pepeton back near the wall and it's in for a home run for Willie Horton.
- 1:50:34And listen to that crowd. Willie Horton hit one nine miles up in the air. The wind is blowing out today. He headed just to the right of the 365 foot sign.
- 1:50:57His 15th home run of the year, his 31st run batted in. It's now the Yankees four and Detroit three in the bat of Norm Cash. Cash walked in the second, hit to the box in the fourth.
- 1:51:07Here's one nine. That ties it up way in the upper deck in right field. Back to back home run by Willie Horton and Norm Cash and the ballgame is tied up.
- 1:51:33Frank Presetti coming out to the mound. Norm Cash has just hit his third home run of the year and only his eighth run batted in.
- 1:51:43But it ties up the ballgame for Presetti who is filling in for Ralph Houch. Out on the mound. Ralph at the graduation of his son up in falling New York.
- 1:51:59And the crow is going to let Mambo stay in there. The batter is downward, hit into a double play in the second, lined a short in the fourth.
- 1:52:08So two pitches, two home runs and this ballgame is brand new again.
- 1:52:25Word bounces one to third foul ball Bobby Cox had it.
- 1:52:32Fred Lasher starts to loosen up.
- 1:52:36And the Detroit bullpen. Remember we told you Dobson hadn't gone this long all year in a relief appearance and he might be tiring. He sure doesn't look like it.
- 1:52:48Pitch to work. There's one base hit to right center field.
- 1:52:56And the Tigers three consecutive base hits.
- 1:53:02That's ten hits for Detroit.
- 1:53:05And Presetti is coming out and that's all for Mambo Kett.
- 1:53:11That will be all for Mambo who has worked five innings and the three batters here in the sixth allowing ten hits.
- 1:53:20He walked one man struck out two. He has been charged with four runs so Mambo cannot be the winning pitcher. He could be the losing pitcher.
- 1:53:28Should work come in to score here and Detroit go on to win the ballgame.
- 1:53:33So Dooley Womack is being called on.
- 1:53:46Dooley Womack coming on to relieve Bill Mambo Kett.
- 1:53:54Mambo and Gibbs have a little huddle over the signs.
- 1:54:04Mambo has been touched up for quite a few base hits in his last three outings.
- 1:54:11The batter will be Ray Orla who bounced to third in the second, popped to first in the fourth.
- 1:54:20Lasher continues to throw. Pat Dobson is in the on deck circle.
- 1:54:24He's the batter to follow Orla but Mayo Smith might have just sent him up there for a decoy.
- 1:54:44Dick Trudewski is loosening up down in the bullpen.
- 1:55:00And Eddie Matthews now is swinging a couple of bats and it looks like he will bat for Ray Orla.
- 1:55:08And Trudewski, we told his warming up, will go in to play shortstop.
- 1:55:16We just got a note from Marv Albert back at WHN that Dean Shantz has gone through seven complete innings against the White Sox and so far he has a no hit game going.
- 1:55:32All right, Eddie Matthews.
- 1:55:41Eddie Matthews pinch hitting for Ray Orla.
- 1:55:50At first base down we're at the score is tied 4-4. The pitch to Matthews drives the deep right center field.
- 1:55:56Pepperton digging. What a play Pepperton made. A beautiful play as he took at least a triple away from Eddie Matthews.
- 1:56:05Holy cow Pepperton with no regard for that fence in right center field made a running leaping backhand catch crashed into the wall.
- 1:56:14Wirt had a hustle back to first place and what a play Pepperton made.
- 1:56:21Beautiful play and now Gates Brown is coming up the bat for Pat Dobson.
- 1:56:28Eddie Matthews jumped on that first pitch and right now on New York Yankee baseball we pause for station identification.
- 1:56:35Hi this is Jerry Ducey. Join me for my telephone talk show. Weeknights here at 810 in your dial WGY Schenectady.
- 1:56:50Gates Brown who is built on the lines of Willie Horton and that means solidly built a left hand batter has been about 15 times seven hits batting for sixty seven.
- 1:57:01He crouches the pitch to Brown outside ball one.
- 1:57:09And the Tigers have come to life and so have their fans. It's all tied up for four bottom of the six.
- 1:57:20The pitch is low. Nice play by Gibbs two balls no strikes as a pinch hitter Gates Brown has been about ten times with six base hits.
- 1:57:34He is strong. Mantle holding the bag against Dunwoody by Wal-Mart his pitch outside ball three three and nothing.
- 1:57:46Steve Hamilton gets up in the Yankee bullpen.
- 1:57:53Lasher has completed warming up down in the Tiger bullpen. Trudusky is still throwing down there. The 3 0 pitch is low ball for and Gates Brown gets a base on ball.
- 1:58:11The batter now Dick McCallough who is two for three McCallough struck out in the first inning. Single left in the third single right in the fifth.
- 1:58:22Only one out.
- 1:58:34In field in double play depth Gates Brown at first downward at second for Detroit.
- 1:58:43Stretched by Wal-Mart his pitch is low ball one. Julie trying to keep the ball down so that the Tiger batters hit it on the ground has been low.
- 1:58:53And now Dean Chance has gone eight complete innings against the White Sox and is no hitter is still intact.
- 1:58:59The toughest three out to go in baseball and don't forget the twins have not scored either.
- 1:59:06The chance might have to go longer than nine innings. The curve is over strike called one on one. Mickey Stanley on deck.
- 1:59:21Yankees for Detroit for in the bottom of the sixth.
- 1:59:31All right Wal-Mart gets the sign from Gibbs. Here's the stretch by Dooley. His pitch is popped up.
- 1:59:39The infield fly rule is called McCallough is out. Bobby Cox makes the play.
- 1:59:45Two out and the batter Mickey Stanley Stanley single at center in the first single left in the third and sacrifice in the fifth.
- 1:59:53He's two for two and he scored a run. Two men out two men on.
- 2:00:16I'd run as late at first and second stretch by Wal-Mart is curved swing and a miss.
- 2:00:24He went fishing for that breaking pitch outside one strike on Stanley.
- 2:00:33And now Joe Verbanne gets up along with Steve Hamilton in the Yankee bullpen.
- 2:00:39Frank Crisetti running this game for the Yankees today.
- 2:00:44Here's the stretch fastball boss at third base cocks up with his steps on the bag for the unassisted fourth play.
- 2:00:51And Womack gets out of the jam with some good relief pitching for Detroit two runs on three hits.
- 2:00:58No Yankee errors two men left and at the end of sixth full inning it's the Yankees four and the Tigers four.
- 2:01:05Well look at the scoreboard and the Red Sox knocked Baltimore off again five to one.
- 2:01:09Culp the winner is the three hit a bra band of the loser Petracelli home in the fourth.
- 2:01:14Ken Harrelson in the fifth with one on in the tenth of the year for Harrelson.
- 2:01:18Washington six Cleveland one at the end of seven and a half.
- 2:01:21Knowles in there now for Washington.
- 2:01:23Willie Smith in there for Cleveland.
- 2:01:25McMullen home in the fourth his tenth and Frank Howard hit his twentieth of the year in the sixth.
- 2:01:30We told you Minnesota nothing White Sox nothing in of eight chance for Minnesota.
- 2:01:34Carlos started locker in the seventh and chances are no hitter going.
- 2:01:38California at Oakland a later stop in the National League.
- 2:01:42The Cardinals came up with three runs in the top of the seventh and have tied the Mets for four at the end of six and a half.
- 2:01:48Gilson replaced Washburn short replace Ryan in the seventh all the other games tonight.
- 2:01:55So Lashar comes in to replace Pat Dobson.
- 2:02:00Fred Lashar side arm underhand throwing right hander and Trudziuski goes in a short.
- 2:02:07To replace Ray Orla.
- 2:02:12And a better will be Jake Gibbs Jake's over to find a left in the first bounce to first in the fourth.
- 2:02:30All right the tall right hand pitcher.
- 2:02:37Lashawine his pitch low and away ball one.
- 2:02:41Mind you a little bit of Ted Abernathy doesn't come quite as far underhand as Abernathy.
- 2:02:49Lashar is making his fifteenth appearance of the year.
- 2:02:52He's one two lost one bounce to the second McCallum.
- 2:02:55One hand that flips easily to catch one out.
- 2:03:04And that brings up Julie Womack.
- 2:03:15Womack has been a bad one time this year without a base hit.
- 2:03:20Julie batting left handed.
- 2:03:31Lash's pitch is a little bit outside ball one.
- 2:03:45Well one oh pitch he checked his swing and tie ball to two and nothing.
- 2:03:56You hear those kids in the background.
- 2:03:59They have really been yelling and having a ball all day here at Tiger Stadium.
- 2:04:07The two oh pitch right down the middle strike called two and one.
- 2:04:20The big right handers pitch there's a base hit.
- 2:04:22Hold it hold it it stayed up and Stanley made the catch.
- 2:04:26A line drive it looked like it was sinking but that ball stayed up as Womack hit it right on the button.
- 2:04:33Stanley a fine center fielder.
- 2:04:37What a jump he got on that ball two out near his clock.
- 2:04:39Harrods single in the first hit to the box in the second struck out in the fifth.
- 2:04:51Packers have been long balling the Yankees in this series.
- 2:04:53Willie Horton's home of last night won the game one and nothing.
- 2:04:57Today Willie Horton and Norm Cash have hit home runs as a pitch over strike ball on deck Roy White.
- 2:05:05Yankees have not been able to take advantage of the friendly fences here at Tiger Stadium.
- 2:05:15High fly to shallow right center. Stanley is there and makes the catch.
- 2:05:21Oh again it's three up three down and the score at the end of six and a half the Yankees four and the Tigers four.
- 2:05:29Folks meet the first lady of cigars the White Owl girl.
- 2:05:33Hi Joe great view up here in the press box.
- 2:05:36I can really see all my White Owl men.
- 2:05:39Anybody I know.
- 2:05:40There's the commissioner of something rather in the first row.
- 2:05:44He's a White Owl man.
- 2:05:46He's smoking the White Owl New Yorker the big cigar for the big man.
- 2:05:51Lucky guy he's got the VIP seat and just a cigar to go with it.
- 2:05:55And on his right there's the tall slim slim must weigh over 250 pounds.
- 2:06:01The tall slim one from White Owl the White Owl Ranger.
- 2:06:05Would you ever watch the guys on the playing field.
- 2:06:07Of course most of them are White Owl men too like that tall cute one over there.
- 2:06:13Good man.
- 2:06:14He had over 300 last year.
- 2:06:15Naturally he smokes the White Owl invincible.
- 2:06:18The cigar that makes you feel that way.
- 2:06:21The cigar made him hit over 300.
- 2:06:23Why not.
- 2:06:24You know you get a lot more from a White Owl than just smoke.
- 2:06:34So we get ready for the bottom of the seventh inning all the Tiger fans standing up.
- 2:06:40And it'll be Northrop, Fren and Horton to face Julie Womack.
- 2:06:46Jim Northrop playing with a cracked rib.
- 2:06:50Has struck out in the first fly to center in the third fly to right in the fifth.
- 2:06:58Northrop is 6'2 and 190 pounds.
- 2:07:03He's a local boy left hand batter Womack's curve over strike ball.
- 2:07:16They play him straight away in the outfield.
- 2:07:18Another curve bounce over the middle and a base hit off the glove of Horace Clark.
- 2:07:23Northrop takes a big turn and comes back.
- 2:07:26A high bouncing ball Clark got his glove on.
- 2:07:28It couldn't hold on to it. It skipped in the center field.
- 2:07:40The batter now Bill Fren who fly to center in the first single left in the third to drive in two runs and bounce to short in the fifth.
- 2:07:48Mantle holding the bag against Northrop.
- 2:08:06The pitch the ball is bunted foul.
- 2:08:25Bill Fren the number four hitter in the lineup was sent up there to butt by Mayo Smith.
- 2:08:30Very unusual. Let's see if he does it again. He fouled the first one off.
- 2:08:35Northrop leads away at first base.
- 2:08:38Stretched by Womack throw to first base. Northrop back.
- 2:08:46We're in the bottom of the seventh all tied up 4-4.
- 2:08:50They're in the eighth inning at Shea Stadium all tied up 4-4.
- 2:08:56Here's the stretch.
- 2:08:57He squares the bunt and almost got hit in the helmet on a curveball high and tight one to one.
- 2:09:14On deck Willie Horton.
- 2:09:20Julie Womack ready. There goes Northrop the ball is taken a throw to second and what a mix up between Clark and Trish.
- 2:09:28The ball goes in the center field and Northrop goes to third.
- 2:09:33Holy cow that's the second time in this game that Clark and Trish have had their signals crossed.
- 2:09:39The perfect throw by Jay Gibbs would have had Northrop but Clark and Trish almost collided.
- 2:09:45They both let the ball go. It went into center field.
- 2:09:56Well the official scorer has got to be slightly out of line.
- 2:10:00He has given the error to Gibbs on the mix up between Trish and Clark at the stolen base.
- 2:10:07For Jim Northrop though he'd have been a dead duck at second.
- 2:10:12I hate to see Gibbs get an error on a perfect throw.
- 2:10:15Here is Freyja now runner at third. Nobody out. One ball two strikes. The infield's in.
- 2:10:19Ground ball base hit the left field.
- 2:10:22And Northrop scores and the Tigers lead 5-4.
- 2:10:29Bill Freyja driving in his third run of the ball game.
- 2:10:41And the battle, Willie Horton. Horton double a left in the second.
- 2:10:44Pops a second in the third. Holman in the sixth.
- 2:10:50Well you've got to get that official scorer to change that error.
- 2:10:52Not because it's the first error by Gibbs this year.
- 2:10:56But because it was a perfect throw and a mix up between Trish and Clark on always covering.
- 2:11:01They almost collided.
- 2:11:04Alright nobody out.
- 2:11:05Pitch to Horton. He squares to Bunt takes it low. Ball one. I can't believe what I'm seeing.
- 2:11:11Pitch to Horton can hit the ball out of here with one hand.
- 2:11:15Freyja and the number four hitter was sent up there to Bunt.
- 2:11:18And Willie Horton wants to talk with Tony Cucinello.
- 2:11:23Horton limping down to third. And it could be that Willie missed the sign.
- 2:11:28I don't think that they would have Horton bunting.
- 2:11:53Sandy why don't you see if you can't call up to that official scorer on that loudspeaker.
- 2:11:58Really that bothers me. The pitch. He takes the strike over. He was not squaring to Bunt that time.
- 2:12:06Tigers now with 12 base hits and five runs. The Yankees six hits and four runs.
- 2:12:18Womack stretches. Curve bounces in the dirt back. Gibbs can't find it going to second is Freyja.
- 2:12:24And it's a wild pitch to charge to Dooley Womack.
- 2:12:31A wild pitch charge to Dooley Womack. And down to second goes Bill Freyja.
- 2:12:44Steve Hamilton is loosening up in the bullpen.
- 2:12:56Womack goes to the rising bag.
- 2:13:01Freyja in at second base. Still nobody out.
- 2:13:08Bottom of the seventh Detroit leading five to nothing. Five to four.
- 2:13:15Curve ground ball base hit to left field. Here comes Greene around third.
- 2:13:20Here's a throw to the plate. And he's out at the plate on a beautiful throw by Roy White.
- 2:13:26A great tag by Jake Gibbs as White threw a perfect strike to Jake.
- 2:13:33And Freyja is cut down trying to score. Willie Horton gets another base hit.
- 2:13:40Roy White on one of his best throws of the year. A one hopper to Gibbs who put the tag on Freyja just trying to slide in.
- 2:13:48We had a beautiful view of that plate. We're just over home plate here at Tigers Stadium.
- 2:13:52And here comes Frank Crissetti with the bat of Norm Cash.
- 2:13:56New up there, Crissetti's coming out to the mound. Womack has been hit hard here in the seventh inning.
- 2:14:03A single by Northrop, a single by Freyja, and a single by Horton.
- 2:14:09Although Dooley should have been out of the inning without a run being scored.
- 2:14:12The mix up at second base between Clark and Tresh.
- 2:14:17Earlier in the game it didn't cost the Yankees. But with a runner at first base, Wirt hit back to the box.
- 2:14:22And Tresh and Clark almost collided and Tresh took the throw from Monboquette.
- 2:14:27Rather Clark took the throw from Monboquette and turned it into a double play where it should have been the shortstop ball.
- 2:14:36So Steve Hamilton is being called in. And that's going to be all for Dooley Womack.
- 2:14:44And Dooley worked just one and a third innings in which he allowed three base hits.
- 2:14:53Walk one has been charged with one run. So Womack is the pitcher of record.
- 2:15:07And Steve Hamilton comes on. Well, it's a cinch. That chance didn't pitch to no hitter. The White Sox won it one and nothing.
- 2:15:22We're getting the news now from Marv Albert. But Steve Hamilton is no one a loss ranking making his tenth appearance of the year.
- 2:15:38And he'll be pitching to Norm Cash.
- 2:15:44So there was one out in the bottom of the ninth inning. Bill Vought broke up Dean Chance's no hitter with a single.
- 2:15:52And then Dick Kenworthy who was just recalled from Hawaii in the Pacific Coast League by the White Sox singled in the bottom of the ninth to win it.
- 2:16:08They ended up with three hits the White Sox all three of them in the bottom of the ninth inning. Minnesota had four hits and no runs.
- 2:16:15Wood was the winner in relief Chance the loser.
- 2:16:21Cash steps in Willie Horton at first base. Cash walked in the second hit to the box in the fourth.
- 2:16:27Homers upstairs in the sixth takes a curve outside ball one Willie Horton at first mantle playing in back of him and our big John Wyatt gets up in the Yankee bullpen.
- 2:16:38The Tigers are leading five to four were in the bottom of the seven.
- 2:16:43The pitch to cash low ball to.
- 2:16:52On deck done work.
- 2:16:57Frank Rosetti handling the reins for the first time this year as sure got himself a tough ballgame to manage.
- 2:17:04Hamilton said curve over strike called two balls in a strike cash was falling away from that side on curve.
- 2:17:15For a while cash was going to left field against left hand pitches and was doing very well.
- 2:17:23Hamilton stretches the pitch swing and a miss through the fastball by him that time to and to.
- 2:17:40Now he steps back off the rubber back on again. Here's the stretch.
- 2:17:46Curve strike three swinging so Hamilton comes up with his specialty striking out a left hand batter.
- 2:17:54And the batter now down work weren't hit in his double play in the second inning line to shorten the fourth single right center in the sixth.
- 2:18:03Ordinant first with two outs.
- 2:18:22The pitch to work is low and inside ball one. Dick Trudusky on deck.
- 2:18:38The pitcher bounce a foul down the third base line.
- 2:18:43One ball one strike.
- 2:18:48Thank you. He's picked up all four runs in the first inning on all six of their hits that they have in the game.
- 2:18:53Tigers had two in the third two in the sixth and one here in the seventh.
- 2:18:59They've gone out in front.
- 2:19:06Stretched by Hamilton pitch ground ball.
- 2:19:10The stretch to his right up with it goes to Clark for the fourth play.
- 2:19:18But Detroit picks up a run on three hits one Yankee error one man left.
- 2:19:23The Yankees four.
- 2:19:46So we go into the top of the eighth inning it'll be Roy White Mickey Mantle and Andy Costco to face Fred Lasher.
- 2:19:55Roy's over three today bounce the second pop the second and struck out.
- 2:20:00Lasher winds his pitch almost hits white ball one.
- 2:20:04Lasher is six four two hundred and fifteen pounds.
- 2:20:07He was born in Poughkeepsie New York now lives in Jamesville Wisconsin.
- 2:20:14Next pitch bounce a foul whitey Ford has it on one hop wants to flip it to last year.
- 2:20:20Last year not looking now he turns and whitey throws him.
- 2:20:31One on one on Roy White here in the top of the eighth.
- 2:20:37Fetched by Lasher a little bit outside two balls in a strike.
- 2:20:52Now the two one pitch a foul at the plate two and two.
- 2:21:08Two balls two strikes on white.
- 2:21:14Lasher pitches high and away full count three and two.
- 2:21:28The payoff pitch on the way a high fly to center field Stanley backing up turns and takes.
- 2:21:37All Roy had to do was pull that one a little bit.
- 2:21:41Stanley has made the last three consecutive put outs and center field.
- 2:21:45His mantle single is center in the first and scored a run pop the second in the second struck out in the fifth.
- 2:22:04The Mickey is a strike on the outside corner.
- 2:22:15I play Mickey deep in all fields. Lasher winds inside make had a duck back out of the way one on one.
- 2:22:35Here's the one one pitch inside again ball two two on one.
- 2:22:42Playing the ninth inning at Chase Stadium all tied up by five Cardinals in the Mets.
- 2:22:48Boston beat Baltimore Washington beat Cleveland and the White Sox beat Minnesota.
- 2:22:55All the other action tonight.
- 2:22:59Pitch on the outside corner two and two.
- 2:23:10Two balls two strikes one out nobody on.
- 2:23:17Fastball is high and again it's three and two and a full count on white before Roy applied to center now a full count on metal.
- 2:23:33Lasher gets the sign the payoff pitch swing and a miss strike three.
- 2:23:47So it's two out and here's Costco and he's single in the first inning hit to the box in the third and flying to right in the six.
- 2:24:14Two out nobody on Detroit leads by four. There's a pitch low and outside ball one.
- 2:24:19He came by the way a third base that time.
- 2:24:22He pitches differently and with a different motion than when he throws to a right hand batter or a left hand batter.
- 2:24:31He winds pitches over strike ball.
- 2:24:35When he's pitching to a left hand batter he falls towards first base pitching or right hand batter he falls toward third base.
- 2:24:53The one one pitch about to the third word has it a long throw in time to get Costco.
- 2:25:01So again it's three up three down for the Yankees and the score at the end of seven and a half.
- 2:25:07Detroit five and the Yankees four.
- 2:25:19I know the hot sun beats down hard.
- 2:25:24You've got to cool off.
- 2:25:26Ice your insides with something special a chilling Valentine premium.
- 2:25:31It's a very special glass of beer.
- 2:25:35Make a ring and add another ring and then another ring and then you've got three rings Valentine.
- 2:25:44And now it's premium. It's a very special glass of beer.
- 2:25:50Valentine premium premium ingredients premium brew for crisp light premium flavor.
- 2:25:57Something you just don't get from just anything.
- 2:26:03Valentine and now it's premium. It's a very special glass of beer.
- 2:26:18Nick Krasinski will lead it off here in the bottom of the eighth.
- 2:26:35First time at bat in the ballgame.
- 2:26:37He replaced Ray Euler.
- 2:26:40Krasinski batting 162 6 to 37 takes a curve from Hamilton low ball one.
- 2:26:50Dick has one double and two RBI.
- 2:26:56One oh pitch ground ball a short trash comes in.
- 2:26:59Fires the first just in time.
- 2:27:02Tommy took a little extra time and almost lost Krasinski in a close play at first.
- 2:27:08One away and the bat of Fred Lascher.
- 2:27:19Last year has been a bad twice this year with one base hit and that's a 500 average no matter how you look at it.
- 2:27:28A strike one call.
- 2:27:37Hamilton winds curve swing and a miss strike two.
- 2:27:42Nothing into on last year.
- 2:27:54Curve over a strike three call three pitches last year is out of their second strikeout for Hamilton.
- 2:28:01And here is McCallum.
- 2:28:04Dick is two for four struck out in the first single in the third single in the fifth and popped a third in the sixth.
- 2:28:23And a third.
- 2:28:25Hamilton's pitch right in their strike ball.
- 2:28:38The next pitch is outside one on one.
- 2:28:53Big left hander delivers a curve of slowball to two and one.
- 2:29:10Now the wind up curve over strike two two and two.
- 2:29:27Now the two to delivery curve over strike three call.
- 2:29:33So Hamilton does a fine job and really three up three down in the score at the end of eight full innings.
- 2:29:39Detroit five the Yankees four.
- 2:29:44On the go.

- 2:30:45Now we go into the ninth inning the Yankees trailing five to four and the Yankees since that first inning when Bobby Cox got the sixth Yankee hit in the first inning.
- 2:30:55The Yankees with the exception of one walk to trash have gone down in order since then.
- 2:31:02Trash has been the only base runner since the first inning.
- 2:31:05Pepper tone who had single pop the second and bounce the first leads off against Fred Lasher.
- 2:31:14Yankees need one to tie two to go ahead.
- 2:31:21Now the big right hander out on the mound.
- 2:31:25Here's the first pitch to Pepper town.
- 2:31:27Strike on the outside corner happy gives that look of disbelief.
- 2:31:43Lasher gets the sign from friend.
- 2:31:47High and away one on one.
- 2:32:02Now the one one pitch.
- 2:32:04Swing and a.
- 2:32:06Wow.
- 2:32:13The first hit since the first inning.
- 2:32:18And the better now Tommy Trash who's single struck out and walk.
- 2:32:27Pepper town gets his second base out of the ballgame the seventh for the Yankees.
- 2:32:38Cash is playing in back of Pepper town at first base.
- 2:32:43Stretched by Lasher pitches in their strike one call.
- 2:33:02Lasher ready to pitch and high in the air to center field Stanley is there and takes it one out.
- 2:33:14Yankees have not been able to pull the ball.
- 2:33:20Everything's been going towards center field and right center field.
- 2:33:27Bobby Cox is single popped a second and bounce the third one out in the top of the ninth Detroit leads five to four.
- 2:33:52It's the cocks that goes Pepe what a jump he had but Cox filed a pitch off.
- 2:33:59The first time they've tried to run against friend and in New York they really ran him ragged.
- 2:34:05He had a good job and now cash comes over the hole first against Pepper Tom for a bandaged up in the Yankee bullpen.
- 2:34:20Hillary and Patterson up in the Tiger ball panel left hander and a right hander.
- 2:34:25Here's the stretch the pitch foul ball and a Tiger dugout.
- 2:34:31Nothing in true on Bobby Cox on deck Jake Gibbs.
- 2:34:40Then did you find out yet about that area to give.
- 2:34:50Gives with a growing error.
- 2:34:53He threw a strike right over second base and just that clock and trash were trying to get out of each other's way.
- 2:35:00I've got to leave the way here's a stretch the pitch ground ball and third where it goes to the ball up for one he falls down.
- 2:35:08And he dropped the ball.
- 2:35:10Wait a minute now.
- 2:35:12He called him out at second base.
- 2:35:16And it looked like McCallop was off the bag and then dropped the ball.
- 2:35:20That's the second time that Russ gets has made a quick decision at second base on a force play.
- 2:35:28A wide throw by Don Word on what looked like a perfect double play ball.
- 2:35:36I feel the must have possession of that baseball longer than a second.
- 2:35:43Good kid.
- 2:35:44Slide to left bounce the first bounce the second two out in the top of the ninth and the Yankees trailing five to four cox is at first.
- 2:35:59Gives ground ball of the shortstop up with it for you he throws the first.
- 2:36:08Nothing across for the Yankees one man left and the Tigers win it five to four.
- 2:36:16And it's a strange thing in this ballgame.
- 2:36:19In fact that the young umpire at second base Russ gets made two hurried calls of plays that cost the Yankees.
- 2:36:30He called a run around at second base when the shortstop had dropped the ball and did not have possession of it for even a fraction of a second.
- 2:36:41And then he called the runner out here.
- 2:36:43Pepper Tony second McCall it did not have possession of the ball and then dropped it.
- 2:36:49So those kind of things kind of hurt in a ballgame especially in these one run games in last night.
- 2:36:54There was no excuses Willie Horton hit the homer to beat Mel Sattelmeyer and the Yankees one and nothing.
- 2:37:02And again here today they use the long ball.
- 2:37:06Another homer by Horton and a homer by cash and three RBI by Bill friend.
- 2:37:11And that was the final score.
- 2:37:13The Tigers five and the Yankees four.
- 2:37:23The totals in the ballgame for the Tigers five runs 13 hits no errors for the Yankees four runs seven hits one error.
- 2:37:29Lasher in relief the winner he's three and one Womack in relief the loser he's on four.
- 2:37:35So that's the story of the ballgame the Yankees lose it.
- 2:37:40And now this is Bill Rizzuto saying once again the final score the Tigers five the Yankees four.
- 2:37:47And speaking for Jerry Coleman and Frank Messer this is Bill Rizzuto saying so long from Tiger Stadium in Detroit.
