Latest / Foul Territory / Trevor May: The ABS Era is HERE
Transcript
- 0:11Speaker 1: Let's talk a little bit about.
- 0:13Speaker 2: ABS because it's common. There was an article that came
- 0:19Speaker 2: out in the Atlantic Atlantic in the Athletic. I know them,
- 0:27Speaker 2: I know them in the Athletic talking about how the
- 0:32Speaker 2: ABS has been voted on by the Joint I believe
- 0:36Speaker 2: the Joint Rules Committee and Joint Rules Committee.
- 0:39Speaker 1: We've been over this.
- 0:40Speaker 2: I'm gonna say this every single time this comes up.
- 0:42Speaker 1: The Joint Rules.
- 0:43Speaker 2: Committee is a farce and a joke. But they voted
- 0:48Speaker 2: to implement the ABS system officially in twenty twenty six.
- 0:52Speaker 2: So we are in the automatic, automatic balls and strike
- 0:56Speaker 2: system era. It's official. We're doing it. But remember there's
- 1:02Speaker 2: only four players out of eleven people on that Joint committee,
- 1:04Speaker 2: so even if the players like don't like it, it's
- 1:06Speaker 2: going to go through anyways. So basically the committee is
- 1:09Speaker 2: just there for it's a complete facade. It doesn't matter
- 1:12Speaker 2: at all. The leagues can do whatever they want. And
- 1:14Speaker 2: by all accounts, the vote was not unanimous. At least
- 1:17Speaker 2: one player appointed the committee opposed the rule change.
- 1:21Speaker 1: Is to quote from the PA, the vote for.
- 1:23Speaker 2: The Player's Committee was not unanimous, which was reflective of
- 1:26Speaker 2: broad player sentiment. The Players Association said in the statement Tuesday,
- 1:32Speaker 2: though for some reason, the actual number has not been reported.
- 1:36Speaker 1: It's been reported for every other vote.
- 1:39Speaker 2: I don't know, guys, I don't know why they wouldn't
- 1:41Speaker 2: put it out there. I feel like it's pretty the
- 1:43Speaker 2: thing's a joke anyway, so just put it out there.
- 1:45Speaker 2: If there's a ten to one, nine to two, seven
- 1:49Speaker 2: to four, you win. You're always gonna win. So it's
- 1:52Speaker 2: in now. I am actually surprised that everyone was unanimous,
- 1:55Speaker 2: because I think this is good. I think this is
- 1:56Speaker 2: a good thing. So let's talk a little bit about
- 1:58Speaker 2: how the ABS is going to work moving forward, because
- 2:02Speaker 2: this is important.
- 2:03Speaker 1: And the rules.
- 2:04Speaker 2: Now, finally we've been speculating for months, the rules have
- 2:08Speaker 2: officially come out. Okay, So in terms of how many
- 2:11Speaker 2: challenges a team will receive, it's to a game. Okay,
- 2:20Speaker 2: So you get two total challenges for your team.
- 2:23Speaker 1: Okay.
- 2:23Speaker 2: If you're correct in challenging and it's overturned, you keep
- 2:27Speaker 2: your challenge.
- 2:27Speaker 1: You keep two. Okay, if you are wrong, you lose it.
- 2:32Speaker 2: This isn't per player, this is per entire team. Do
- 2:38Speaker 2: teams get an extra one in extra innings? They do
- 2:42Speaker 2: only if they have no challenges left. So Basically, if
- 2:46Speaker 2: you end the game and nine innings and you have
- 2:48Speaker 2: two challenges left, you go into the tenth inning with two. Okay,
- 2:54Speaker 2: as soon as you use one, you have one. You
- 2:57Speaker 2: just have your one. You use it again, you have zero.
- 3:00Speaker 2: The next inning you have one again. So if you
- 3:02Speaker 2: start the inning with zero, you get one again, and
- 3:04Speaker 2: both teams get them every inning, so you get one
- 3:06Speaker 2: an inning.
- 3:07Speaker 1: For the rest of the game.
- 3:08Speaker 2: That's how That's what my understanding is it.
- 3:10Speaker 1: Now.
- 3:10Speaker 2: I could have been wrong about the first part. I
- 3:13Speaker 2: tried to find distinct information. Some people alluded to it.
- 3:17Speaker 2: I believe that's how it works. So you have to
- 3:19Speaker 2: go down to zero before you get your extra inning one,
- 3:20Speaker 2: but you will have at least one. You will have
- 3:24Speaker 2: maximum of one. You will have one no matter what,
- 3:26Speaker 2: going every inning, if you even if you ended the
- 3:28Speaker 2: game with none, okay. So that's how extra innings will work.
- 3:33Speaker 2: The challenge system will be in every ballpark from the
- 3:37Speaker 2: get go, so everyone's doing it. There's no more testing.
- 3:39Speaker 2: It's everywhere, and it will be used in the playoffs.
- 3:41Speaker 2: This system will be exactly the same in the playoffs.
- 3:44Speaker 1: Moving forward.
- 3:44Speaker 2: You will get two going into the until you go
- 3:47Speaker 2: into extra innings get one per inning a maximum one
- 3:49Speaker 2: per inning for the whole extra innings. So that's how
- 3:52Speaker 2: it's going to work there. This one's interesting. I did
- 3:55Speaker 2: not think that this was going to be so strict,
- 3:57Speaker 2: but it is.
- 3:59Speaker 1: I like it. I think this is great.
- 4:01Speaker 2: So as for who can do the challenge, it is
- 4:05Speaker 2: denoted by the old tap on the hat, so the
- 4:08Speaker 2: pitcher can do it, the catcher can do it, and the.
- 4:11Speaker 1: Batter can do it. Do you know who can't do it?
- 4:13Speaker 1: The manager?
- 4:15Speaker 2: Do you know who can't tell the catcher the pitcher
- 4:18Speaker 2: do it, the manager or anyone for the dugout. You
- 4:21Speaker 2: can't look and get a signal if you do that.
- 4:23Speaker 2: If you look and look for a signal and they
- 4:25Speaker 2: give you one, you don't get.
- 4:26Speaker 1: To do it.
- 4:27Speaker 2: Like they're like nope, nope, you don't get to do it.
- 4:30Speaker 2: And I think that is awesome because players now have
- 4:34Speaker 2: to make these decisions in real time and they have
- 4:38Speaker 2: to be confident in it, and you only have two
- 4:40Speaker 2: as a team. So it's gonna be fascinating, especially for hitters.
- 4:44Speaker 2: It's gonna be so fascinating to see which hitters get
- 4:48Speaker 2: the green light, Like how you give guys the green light.
- 4:53Speaker 2: Like how teams try to like secretly tell guys to
- 4:56Speaker 2: do it or not, because that's going to happen. Trust
- 4:58Speaker 2: me that they're going to try to be like do
- 5:00Speaker 2: it like and try not to get caught. That's gonna happen.
- 5:03Speaker 2: And then how does like pitcher catcher, Because if your
- 5:06Speaker 2: pitcher does it twice in a game is wrong both
- 5:08Speaker 2: times the batters don't have any So like our team's
- 5:12Speaker 2: going to say, okay, pitchers get one, batters get one
- 5:14Speaker 2: until this ending, and then if there's two left, then
- 5:17Speaker 2: you can use them wherever or whatever. Like what's the
- 5:19Speaker 2: strategy going to be, How our team's going to put that,
- 5:22Speaker 2: put that into effect?
- 5:23Speaker 1: And then.
- 5:25Speaker 2: Are catcher is going to call it more than pitchers.
- 5:28Speaker 2: That's also valuable for me because I remember several times
- 5:32Speaker 2: in twenty twenty two and twenty one and twenty two
- 5:35Speaker 2: I had Thomas Needo behind the plate. Tomasio was one
- 5:37Speaker 2: of the best framers, best receivers in the league. He
- 5:40Speaker 2: got I got nidoed so many times to where I
- 5:42Speaker 2: was like, oh my gosh, right there and I'm yelling
- 5:44Speaker 2: at an umpire or whatever, and I go in and
- 5:46Speaker 2: look at it and the next day I check and
- 5:47Speaker 2: it's like four inches outside. I'm like, well, if I
- 5:50Speaker 2: would have done that, I would look like an idiot, right,
- 5:53Speaker 2: But Nedo knew that it was a ball, He knew,
- 5:56Speaker 2: So I think it's going to be ninety ten. I
- 5:59Speaker 2: think the the catchers are going to call it right away,
- 6:01Speaker 2: and they're going to be They're going to be the
- 6:02Speaker 2: ones that make the call, with the exception of the
- 6:05Speaker 2: Justin Berlanders and extres of the world calling.
- 6:08Speaker 1: Onund of their own.
- 6:09Speaker 2: So it's fascinating to see who's going to be allowed
- 6:12Speaker 2: to do it, who's not going to be allowed. I
- 6:14Speaker 2: know Tito Francona was talking about it in spring this year.
- 6:18Speaker 2: You know, hey, we're not doing this because we're not
- 6:20Speaker 2: going to have.
- 6:20Speaker 1: In the season. Now what are they going to do? Right?
- 6:26Speaker 1: Are they going to like is Ellie going to get
- 6:27Speaker 1: to do it? Like? How much of a veteran do
- 6:30Speaker 1: you have to be? I love it.
- 6:34Speaker 3: FT fan. Superpower believes that every human has one hundred
- 6:37Speaker 3: year potential and they're going to help you get there.
- 6:39Speaker 3: I like the sweatshirt Aeric Kratz, and I also love
- 6:42Speaker 3: the way that Superpower takes care of its members.
- 6:46Speaker 4: Yeah, you go get your lab test, you become the
- 6:49Speaker 4: best you. You be a member of this group and
- 6:53Speaker 4: your test will come back. It's unlocking things that you
- 6:56Speaker 4: didn't know about yourself. This is stuff that players used
- 6:58Speaker 4: all the time. You can do it now too.
- 7:01Speaker 3: Exactly Kratz. How many of you have gone to a
- 7:03Speaker 3: doctor's appointment you get the classic oh you're fine, or

- 7:27Speaker 3: the Ft podcast to support the show. Your biology decoded,
- 7:32Speaker 3: your blueprint activated with Superpower.
- 7:36Speaker 2: So challenges have to be immediate, like I mentioned before,
- 7:38Speaker 2: so you can't ask anybody, right, you have to be
- 7:40Speaker 2: like Boom. You get like a second probably by the
- 7:43Speaker 2: time the ball's back to you. You have to do
- 7:45Speaker 2: it and the hitter. But again, it's one of those
- 7:48Speaker 2: things like, you're not gonna be like, well, like, what
- 7:50Speaker 2: are you going to do?
- 7:51Speaker 1: Replay it in your mind?
- 7:51Speaker 2: You can't see it again, so you're just gonna be like,
- 7:53Speaker 2: whatever your initial reaction.
- 7:54Speaker 1: Is, you're going to go for that.
- 7:56Speaker 2: It's going to be fascinating because then on top of
- 7:58Speaker 2: all of that, we're going to see who's good at
- 8:00Speaker 2: it who's not.
- 8:01Speaker 1: And I'm I can't wait.
- 8:03Speaker 2: I can't wait to rank people based on how good
- 8:05Speaker 2: they are at using the challenge system. It's going to
- 8:07Speaker 2: be the best. Okay, all right, So it's a tap.
- 8:12Speaker 2: It's great. I love it. It'll be shown on the
- 8:16Speaker 2: on TV and on the big board with the animation
- 8:20Speaker 2: within ten seconds, right, so it's really quick. They're shooting
- 8:23Speaker 2: for ten seconds.
- 8:24Speaker 1: It was on average.
- 8:25Speaker 2: Thirteen point eight seconds per and in spring it was
- 8:29Speaker 2: four point one challenges thirteen to point eight seconds per
- 8:31Speaker 2: which adds about a minute to the game. But fifty
- 8:34Speaker 2: two percent of them were overturned, so the so whoever
- 8:37Speaker 2: challenged it was right most of the time, which I
- 8:39Speaker 2: also think is awesome. And there's a great example of
- 8:42Speaker 2: like guys know many they some guys know, and some
- 8:45Speaker 2: guys really don't know. But it'll show the graphic, it'll
- 8:49Speaker 2: show in the box where it hit and whether the
- 8:50Speaker 2: touch or not, and you'll know preferably within the amount
- 8:54Speaker 2: of time it takes to throw.
- 8:55Speaker 1: A pitch to nobody on base.
- 8:56Speaker 2: Okay, so do people like it and why do they
- 9:01Speaker 2: decide to go through it?
- 9:02Speaker 4: Well?
- 9:05Speaker 1: Yeah, they did like it.
- 9:07Speaker 2: So people were asked seventy two percent of the challenge
- 9:10Speaker 2: system had a positive impact on their watching experience moving forward.
- 9:14Speaker 2: Sixty nine percent nice of those surveys said that it
- 9:19Speaker 2: would like a sport to go ahead with the abs,
- 9:21Speaker 2: versus thirty one percent in favor of continuing with human empires.
- 9:23Speaker 2: So sixty nine thirty one, that's a that's a pretty
- 9:27Speaker 2: strong polling. I think that I'm in that camp. I
- 9:30Speaker 2: think this is a great way to go forward because,
- 9:33Speaker 2: like I've said before, like I'm about to say again,
- 9:36Speaker 2: getting every call exactly perfectly right is a sanitation of
- 9:41Speaker 2: the game. There needs to be a little bit of tension,
- 9:43Speaker 2: a little like things could go wrong no matter what
- 9:45Speaker 2: you do, kind of like life right, just we need that,
- 9:49Speaker 2: we need.
- 9:49Speaker 1: That parody just a little bit.
- 9:51Speaker 2: But what this does it adds a strategic element to
- 9:54Speaker 2: the game. So something you've got to think about something,
- 9:56Speaker 2: you've got to get good at something, you've got to
- 9:58Speaker 2: be confident in as a player and as a team,
- 10:01Speaker 2: and you have to have a cohesive plan and it
- 10:04Speaker 2: can be huge getting just a slight advantage one way
- 10:07Speaker 2: or the other to win ball games.
- 10:08Speaker 1: And I love that. I think that's great.
- 10:09Speaker 2: It's the same thing with if you're good at instant replay,
- 10:11Speaker 2: if your guy is right all the time, that is
- 10:14Speaker 2: extremely valuable for your team, right, So I like that part. Also,
- 10:20Speaker 2: there will still be missed calls which need to like
- 10:23Speaker 2: that just needs to be around, but a lot more
- 10:25Speaker 2: calls will be called correctly, especially when when the guys
- 10:30Speaker 2: are right a lot and a lot of those calls
- 10:32Speaker 2: are getting overturned and turned the other way. And then
- 10:34Speaker 2: umpires are also incentivized to continue to improve, which they've
- 10:38Speaker 2: been as good as they've ever been this year.
- 10:40Speaker 1: They really have, so like it's improving. The whole game
- 10:44Speaker 1: is improving in.
- 10:44Speaker 2: Terms of balls and strikes being called and getting them right,
- 10:47Speaker 2: and that is all we're asking for here. So I
- 10:51Speaker 2: think this is a generally good thing. And it's been
- 10:53Speaker 2: tested for six years, so we are at the time
- 10:55Speaker 2: where it's time to just go run for it. So
- 11:00Speaker 2: the human elements still there. There's some mistakes, but we're
- 11:03Speaker 2: getting more calls right, and players have to learn a
- 11:06Speaker 2: new skill and then be confident in their ability to
- 11:09Speaker 2: use it, and then teams have to develop how they're
- 11:12Speaker 2: going to deploy this thing. I think it's just really
- 11:14Speaker 2: hit checking a lot of boxes for me, and I
- 11:16Speaker 2: think it's.
- 11:16Speaker 1: Going to make the game.
- 11:20Speaker 2: More fun to watch and a better product without adding
- 11:23Speaker 2: any time or you know, making it so pitchers can't.
- 11:27Speaker 1: Pick off and stuff.
- 11:28Speaker 2: So I want to know what you guys think I
- 11:30Speaker 2: don't like. Do you think that this is Do you
- 11:33Speaker 2: think it's like accurate enough? Do you think it's fast enough?
- 11:36Speaker 2: Do you think there's something else to can be about it?
- 11:38Speaker 2: Do you think there's enough challenges? Maybe three is enough?
- 11:41Speaker 2: How do we like the the extra inning thing? Do
- 11:44Speaker 2: you should it be in the playoffs or to no?
- 11:46Speaker 2: What do you guys think of all that stuff? Obviously in
- 11:48Speaker 2: the comments when this is the video and in the
- 11:49Speaker 2: chat right now, just like let me know, but it's
- 11:52Speaker 2: coming whether you like it or not, it is coming.
- 11:56Speaker 2: And that's a little bit like life, right. We have
- 12:01Speaker 2: no control of them.
- 12:04Speaker 1: Mm hmmm mm hmmmm mmm
