- 0:18Hour number two, Miller and Condon, welcome back.
- 0:20Iowa Sports Radio Network. Trent Condon and Ken Miller.
- 0:23We're here with you until the top of the hour.
- 0:25The drive is coming up with Heather and Lucas and Turing
- 0:29Stone of Iowa sponsors our weekly conversation with our
- 0:32friend David Kaplan, ESPN 1000. Cappy's YouTube channel is where
- 0:37you can find him on a daily basis and he's with Miller and
- 0:40Condon on Wednesdays. Hello Capper, How are you?
- 0:43I'm awesome, how are you guys doing?
- 0:45Hope all the listeners are doing well here on Wednesday.
- 0:48Well, they are, and especially they're doing well if they're
- 0:51Cubs fans watching this team night in and night out.
- 0:54So much fun to watch. Cap truly are PCA putting
- 0:57together, I don't know, maybe a an MVP type of season at this
- 1:02point. Certainly he's trending in that
- 1:05direction to at least be in the conversation, but there's so
- 1:08much more. Cap, this team, we both thought,
- 1:11all three of us thought that they would win the division
- 1:13ultimately, they would come out on top in the Central.
- 1:16I didn't know they were going to have this type of record and be
- 1:20this fun to watch. Did you?
- 1:23If you'll remember back, you can pull your tapes.
- 1:26I predicted 91 wins. That was my pick.
- 1:30And seemed high. And there were a lot that's
- 1:34thought that it seemed high. My buddy Yurko on ESPN 1000 and
- 1:38I have $100 wager. He said 83 and so that would
- 1:42make the middle ground. 87 would be a push.
- 1:46And I'll be disappointed if the Cubs only win 87 games.
- 1:51And you should be happy the way the way that they're played.
- 1:53You know, to Ken's point here, just the enjoyment I get out of
- 1:56watching this team. And that's why I think this
- 1:58team, there's still a whole lot more upside.
- 2:00They can beat you in so many different ways offensively.
- 2:03We think that they're going to go out and spend that.
- 2:05There is going to be another arm maybe in the bullpen, another
- 2:08arm in that staff. But offensively, this is
- 2:11different than so many good Cubs teams.
- 2:13We've seen in the past that they relied on the long ball or
- 2:15relied on guys getting on base. They could just beat you so many
- 2:18ways offensively, Cap. Yeah, they put eight runs up
- 2:21yesterday and their fast offensive player didn't play and
- 2:26I don't think he's playing tonight either.
- 2:27And I wouldn't be shocked if he sits out tomorrow's game talking
- 2:31about Kyle Tucker and then get him back for the Detroit series.
- 2:35But we'll see. Yeah, you're right.
- 2:37They can beat you with their legs.
- 2:39They're among the top five stolen base teams.
- 2:42They led for a while in all of baseball.
- 2:45They have power. They've got how many guys that
- 2:48have double digit home runs can beat you with their gloves,
- 2:52especially up the middle with Nico Dansby.
- 2:56PCA and the Catchers have had a really good start to their
- 3:01season and then they can beat you by paper cutting you to
- 3:04death like Nico Horner last night.
- 3:07You know, there's man on and he has a heck of an at bat, and
- 3:11then he shoots one in the right field and drives in two more
- 3:13runs. And that effectively ended the
- 3:16National fan. Yeah, and say, Suzuki having the
- 3:19campaign he he's had, and you mentioned Nico, not that he's
- 3:23going to hit a ton of home runs, but he hasn't left the ballpark.
- 3:27He hasn't hit any. So that's there.
- 3:29And Matt Shaw, cap, since he's come back to the big leagues,
- 3:34any concern about his arm strength?
- 3:36I mean, that's that's out the window.
- 3:38He's playing incredible defense. He's hitting the ball.
- 3:42I mean, this looks like a brilliant move on their part,
- 3:44sending him back down. No question about it.
- 3:48And he deserves a lot of credit for how he A, handled the
- 3:52demotion and then B made the necessary adjustments where, you
- 3:56know, yesterday I saw him rifle a double and then hit another
- 4:01one almost to the exact same spot.
- 4:02And it was a really nice running catch by the outfielder.
- 4:05But Matt Shaw, defensively, you saw third base.
- 4:10Hopefully the offense is with it.
- 4:14It's been eye opening what he's done and we talked about it with
- 4:17you Cap, just watching the work that he was putting in through
- 4:20the eyes of Tommy Birch more than anything.
- 4:21But and it wasn't just with the bat, it was in the field.
- 4:24He was putting in the work every single day to do it.
- 4:27So what Ian Hap did when he was called down here, it says a lot
- 4:30about them. The bullpen, they have had a big
- 4:35step forward. And as Ken's talked about a ton,
- 4:37what you're getting out of the back end now, I think it's
- 4:40sustainable. I mean, a live arm down there
- 4:41and what you're getting in the back end, what they're getting.
- 4:44But of those middle pieces, who's the guy that you still see
- 4:47that you think it's going to be a big contender, a guy in the
- 4:50bullpen, that eighth inning up a run, need a couple of outs.
- 4:55Who's the guy you're most confident in right now in the
- 4:57middle of that bullpen? Brad Keller without a doubt.
- 5:01I give Jed a lot of credit. That was a non roster invite to
- 5:04camp and he even, he said the other day in an interview you
- 5:10would have told me I'm going to throw in 100 miles an hour.
- 5:12I would never have believed it. But the Cubs pitch slab does
- 5:16wonders with a mechanic B spin rate and he is in a perfect role
- 5:23for him. Could you stretch him out and
- 5:25make him a middling starter? That's what he was.
- 5:28Now he comes in and it's good morning, good afternoon and good
- 5:34night. Ryan hit it.
- 5:35How did they get field bar from the twins?
- 5:37Was he cast off? Free.
- 5:40Agent. Free agent.
- 5:40Was he a free agent? OK, so they signed him.
- 5:43Pomerantz was. I mean, he he'd worn out his
- 5:46welcome in Seattle. Pomerantz had not thrown a big
- 5:49league pitch since 2021. Jesus, I didn't know that for
- 5:53how long. Wow.
- 5:54And then Palencia who Trent alluded to at the back, have
- 5:58they found their closer here cap or you still have concerns?
- 6:02I don't have concerns, you just have to keep proving it.
- 6:05Do you know how they got Valencia?
- 6:08No. So they trade Andrew Chaffin,
- 6:11who they roughed up last night, Nationals, they trade him to
- 6:15Oakland in a deal where Oakland was pretty good and they wanted
- 6:19to try and get that, you know, piece in their bullpen.
- 6:22And the Cubs wanted this first base on outfielder named Greg
- 6:26Dykeman, who he never made it with us.
- 6:29And they said, but we're giving you a plug and play reliever,
- 6:32give us a lottery ticket. We'll take that kid right there
- 6:35with the ERA over six who throws 99, 9 and they gave them to him
- 6:39and they've made them into this. You got to give them credit for
- 6:43for what they're doing. Are you now more sold on Craig
- 6:45Council than you were last year? Yes, and you know, it's funny
- 6:51people say to me because I went on, I called my friend Barstool
- 6:55Big Cat one day. This was back in April from
- 6:59Barstool Sports. He answered while he was in the
- 7:02middle of doing his podcast. He's like, oh, caps call, let's
- 7:06put him on. And so I I was calling him about
- 7:10something unrelated. He said give me a couple seconds
- 7:13on the Cubs and I go it's overrated over grossly overpaid
- 7:17manager because the day before he had brought field bar in to
- 7:22face Eugenio Suarez and he got out of a bases loaded jam and
- 7:28then he brought him back and he got roughed up and I'm like,
- 7:30what are you doing? You use the guy, the last thing,
- 7:33why are you bringing him back? To be truthful, I was an angry
- 7:37Cub fan when I was ripping Craig counsel there and I'm glad he's
- 7:41our manager. That guy's just look at how his
- 7:44team play. They run balls out and the
- 7:47infield, they run balls out to 1st.
- 7:50He's doing a great job. Kate Horton got the start last
- 7:53night, gets the win. Horton has now pitched 54 2/3
- 7:58innings on the season. Game plan going forward.
- 8:01Now, he's not exactly had to face the who's who of a Baseball
- 8:05Nationals, Rockies, Marlins, White Sox's first start.
- 8:08It wasn't even a start came against the Mets as he came in
- 8:11after an opener. But with Horton, if he proves
- 8:14that he's going to be a piece that maybe can be your #4
- 8:17starter in the playoffs, what do you have to do?
- 8:19Because there's going to be an innings Max that he's going to
- 8:21hit at some point. What's the game plan with Kate
- 8:23Horton? Well, I think you're exactly
- 8:26right. There is going to be an innings
- 8:28cap that he's going to hit and that's why you're not going to
- 8:31see them, you know, stretch him out no matter how well he's
- 8:35throwing and look up and go, wow, he's got 108 pitches in the
- 8:398th. That's not going to happen.
- 8:41No chance. I'll be stunned if that
- 8:43happened. They're going to treat him,
- 8:45though, like a big league pitcher on a team that thinks
- 8:48they can win the World Series, and they do.
- 8:50They truly believe they can win the World Series and that
- 8:54they're going to to make moves, and it's incumbent on Tom
- 8:57Ricketts and his family to green light whatever spend Ted Hoyer
- 9:02asked them to spend if the player can help put them over
- 9:05the top. Tom is always maintained.
- 9:08I'm not spending good money on bad.
- 9:11My difference with Tom is I don't think he goes all in at
- 9:16the start of the season. I think he says prove it to me
- 9:19and in July I'll let you spend what you want.
- 9:22Well, that makes it really tough.
- 9:24But his team 16 over. They haven't been 16 over since
- 9:282016. This team has a chance.
- 9:32The Dodgers have tons of pitching injuries.
- 9:36I'm not telling you you're going to beat the mats, so you're
- 9:38going to beat the Dodger. But guess what?
- 9:40You're good enough to do it. So now if Chris Sale, Nathan
- 9:43Evaldi, Merrill Kelly, Zach Gallon, Jacob degrom, if any of
- 9:49these dudes become available, the money should not factor.
- 9:54If they want too much in Prospect Capital and Jed says
- 9:56no, that's Jed's job, not mine, but the owner.
- 9:59Better green light to spend. Cap, if there is a move to be
- 10:04made with with the same, there will be who's in the most, I
- 10:07guess tenuous spot of losing their spot on this roster. 40
- 10:10year old Justin Turner, Birdie who can fly Bruhan has got some
- 10:14good speed in his own right. Those would be the three, right,
- 10:18that would have to be, you know, kind of maybe not resting as
- 10:21comfortable as they would think they would on a first place
- 10:24team. It would be those three that
- 10:26would be one of those three, Likely the odd man if you have
- 10:29to make a move. Well, you're going to have to
- 10:32replace Reese McGuire at some point when the Gala Maya comes.
- 10:35Back. Yep, Yep.
- 10:37So that that'll happen, we don't know injuries, injuries can
- 10:42happen. We have no idea there.
- 10:44That's one. And then two, I don't know what
- 10:46the cost would be. Let's assume that Texas falls
- 10:49out of it and they say, yeah, we'll trade you Nathan of ALDI
- 10:54because I don't think they're going to move to Grom and his
- 10:5695,000,000 left. But we want and they give you a
- 11:00player off your Major League roster.
- 11:02Or maybe it's a bigger deal. Maybe it is Chris Sale or Jacob
- 11:06degrom or some like, oh God, the Cubs got who and they want a
- 11:11player off your active roster. I mean, there's certain the guys
- 11:14that are untouchable, they're not trading PCA, No, I would be
- 11:18stunned if they ever traded Matt Shaw.
- 11:21But could another deal happen? I guess anything is in play.
- 11:25But the three names you mentioned probably makes sense.
- 11:28I'll be surprised if Justin Turner's moved.
- 11:30I'll be surprised. Because of his clubhouse
- 11:32presence and the been there fact that.
- 11:35Yeah, and they like his right-handed bat.
- 11:37And you know, Michael Bush doesn't really start much
- 11:39against lefties. I haven't seen tonight's lineup
- 11:42yet. Is Michael Bush in the lineup
- 11:43tonight? Seen yet?
- 11:44No. It's a lefty, Mackenzie Gore.
- 11:47Normally he would. He's only hitting 169 against
- 11:49lefties this year, and he may not be in the lineup.
- 11:53Although who's going to be your DH if Justin Turner's place
- 11:57first? Who's the DH if Kyle Tucker
- 12:00isn't in the lineup? Yeah, it's a great point because
- 12:02Suzuki's going to be up in the off field.
- 12:04Right. Yeah, maybe it'd be one of the
- 12:07whoever's not catching. Boy, you only got 2 catchers.
- 12:11I know it. That's awfully thin.
- 12:13It's. Chancy.
- 12:14To do that, I don't. I would be surprised.
- 12:16I will bet the Michael Bush is playing tonight.
- 12:19That's my thought. Speaking of that, who is the
- 12:21emergency catcher if it would ever get to that?
- 12:24I think it's John Birdie. Is it OK?
- 12:27That's what I've heard, I think. Birdie saw it, I don't know,
- 12:30probably 15 years ago with my tea, the Twins.
- 12:32And it's just one of those weird things you never think of until
- 12:34it pops up and then it does. Hey, we just had a caller call
- 12:37in Cappy. We're talking about guys off the
- 12:39radar. What about Trevor Bauer?
- 12:42Would the Cubs roll the dust? Absolutely zero chance.
- 12:45Zero chance. Zero.
- 12:48Like, talk to people from the Dodgers, the, the, you know,
- 12:52whatever accusations and suspension, all that.
- 12:56Let's say that none of that ever happened.
- 12:58I know for a fact, because I had a player tell me Dodgers players
- 13:02went to management and said under no circumstance do we want
- 13:07that guy in our clubhouse another day ever.
- 13:10That's how much they despised him as a teammate, So I'll pass.
- 13:15When you when you think back, I mean, Aroldis Chapman in his
- 13:18baggage, he was with the with the Cubs, obviously during that
- 13:21World Series run. They I'm guessing, yeah, they
- 13:24won the World Series. So that covered up a lot of the
- 13:27ill will that seemingly might have come their way.
- 13:29Would that factor into it, Cap? Just the fact that, you know,
- 13:33they had to Bob. Chapman.
- 13:35Yeah, they had to get some blowback when he was on the
- 13:37roster, I would think. Yeah, I mean, they did when they
- 13:41first brought him in. And then, you know, people are
- 13:44such phonies because I'm talking about fans, all of us.
- 13:49People can be phony. And I remember the day he was
- 13:52traded for Cubs are playing at Guaranteed Rate.
- 13:55That's what they used to call it against the White Sox.
- 13:58And they asked, you know, the media asked a question to a guy
- 14:01who literally at that point spoke 0 English, I mean, zero.
- 14:06And what was your phone call like with Mr. Ricketts?
- 14:09And I don't know, I was asleep above.
- 14:11And now he's getting blasted by the Chicago media.
- 14:14Poor guy had no idea about the question.
- 14:18And he's he's just lost. So the late Pedro Gomez is
- 14:23standing next to me. He's like, all right, I got to
- 14:26rescue this poor guy. And Pedro Gomez, God rest his
- 14:29soul, went up and interviewed him in Spanish and cleared
- 14:33everything up and it all went away.
- 14:35And then all these people that were calling into radio shows
- 14:38like mine can't believe we acquired this guy's a horrible
- 14:42human, blah blah, blah, blah, blah.
- 14:44And then there's 41,000 at Wrigley and everyone standing
- 14:48there in the 9th inning, his first game at Wrigley Field,
- 14:51holding their phones, filming everyone's fearing and
- 14:55screaming. That's fine.
- 14:57If you don't think he should be on the team, then don't be these
- 15:00front runners that now that he's there and he's really good, now
- 15:03you're on board. Come on.
- 15:04No. I see the Tigers, they've
- 15:07knowing that that series coming up this weekend, they've changed
- 15:12their rotation. So Scuba will face the Cubs on
- 15:15Friday. Yeah, that kind of speaks
- 15:17volumes, right? Yeah, Scuba's really good.
- 15:20I'll. Say.
- 15:21So many Cubs, Yeah. So you get a guy who's a side
- 15:26defending Cy Young winner, who's really, really good, and they
- 15:30have the best record. As you and I and Trent are
- 15:33having this interview right now, the best, winningest team in
- 15:36baseball are the Detroit Tigers against the Chicago Cubs, who
- 15:40are 16 over and have the best record in the National League.
- 15:44I'm pretty surprised Sunday Night Baseball didn't say, you
- 15:47know what, we've seen enough Yankees and Red Sox.
- 15:49Let's put the Cubs and Tigers there.
- 15:51That that would make perfect. People, the Midwest would
- 15:54certainly enjoy that, but fortunately not going to get it.
- 15:57Well, are we going to get a new stadium in Chicago for the Bears
- 15:59or what? Another wall this week that has
- 16:02put up. It just it feels like it's one
- 16:04thing after another and I lose track cap of of as the stadium
- 16:08terms, if you will. It seems like there's just
- 16:10roadblock after roadblock as they try to figure this thing
- 16:13out. We are going to get a stadium.
- 16:16It's going to be in Arlington Heights.
- 16:18I told you guys that. From the jump.
- 16:21Year or more. Look, they investigated the
- 16:24city. They used the city as a power
- 16:27play. The mayor of the city of Chicago
- 16:29is horrible and he won't be here much longer.
- 16:33They have no juice to be able to get public financing.
- 16:37They will get something done and it will be in Arlington Heights
- 16:40and it will be glorious. Cap, I want to ask you about
- 16:44because you have a relationship with Tom Thibodeau, memory
- 16:47serves of his time in Chicago. He's a good friend.
- 16:50Yeah. Did you reach out to him?
- 16:52Will you at some point point here?
- 16:53I texted him I have not heard back yet so we'll see.
- 16:57Shocking, right? I mean, I was surprised.
- 16:58Were you? Was I?
- 17:01I'm surprised because they went to the Eastern Conference
- 17:04finals. Not surprised because and I love
- 17:07Tips and if I own the team, I would want Tips to coach my
- 17:11team. But he's not for everybody now.
- 17:15I mean, his idea of a perfect day in the offseason is to go
- 17:20eat a great meal and then go watch five hours of basketball
- 17:22film. That's what that's who he is,
- 17:24Yeah. I know, he said.
- 17:25That he once said, I was engaged in six weeks before the wedding,
- 17:29I went, I can't do this. That's not who I am.
- 17:32Never had kids, never had a wife.
- 17:34His mistress, his wife. His love is basketball, period.
- 17:41And there's nothing wrong with that.
- 17:42That's how he chose to live his life.
- 17:45Well, the problem is not everybody that is on your team
- 17:50embraces that same philosophy. There are other things in the
- 17:54world other than just basketball.
- 17:56For him, that's not where it is. I mean, guys made well over $100
- 18:01million. It's not money that drives him.
- 18:04He loves constructing A-Team. I love the dude.
- 18:08I think he's great, but he's not for everybody.
- 18:11The Chicago Fire, I don't believe have ever come up in our
- 18:14conversations with you and me, Kathy, dating back a decade,
- 18:17with Ken even longer than that. I'm going to guess it didn't
- 18:19come up 3. Decades.
- 18:20Their owner, though, is putting up privately funding a $650
- 18:26million stadium in the South Loop.
- 18:29That's got to be good for Chicago, right?
- 18:30To get a stadium and nobody has to foot the bill.
- 18:34Yeah, Joe Mansueto, he is a wealthy dude, obviously.
- 18:37And he said I'm going to build a stadium for my team and happy to
- 18:42do it. There's still room to put the
- 18:44White Sox stadium there. There is, but it would be, you
- 18:49know, they would jam in two stadiums in that parcel.
- 18:52And if I'm him, if the government pays for Jerry
- 18:56Stadium, I'll be like, whoa, whoa, hold on a second.
- 18:59I'm privately funding mine and you're going to pay for his.
- 19:02I will be surprised if the White Sox get a fully funded by the
- 19:06Cat taxpayer Stadium yet again. I don't believe that's going to
- 19:10happen and I don't think it should happen.
- 19:12I think they could ask for some infrastructure.
- 19:15Like I've said on the Bears, you had a Wyden, Interstate 90 or
- 19:20Euclid Ave. where you get off, or Route 50, state Route 53,
- 19:25well, that's going to benefit the region.
- 19:27But the stadium itself, where I'm selling tickets and signs
- 19:31and everything else, I'm not paying my tax dollars.
- 19:34And I love sports as much as any human alive.
- 19:37I am not paying my tax dollars to enrich a billionaire.
- 19:41Not doing it. Cap will get you out of here on
- 19:43this and you were very generous with your time as you always
- 19:45are. OTA's for the bears of this
- 19:47week. A big storyline was what?
- 19:51Body language, which I I said on my radio show this morning,
- 19:56whatever I'll see you in September.
- 19:58I don't care about body language.
- 19:59But he did tell Caleb Williams no more am I going to see you
- 20:03slumped on the bench because it does not going your way.
- 20:06DJ Moore spoke yesterday and said yeah once and he jumped my
- 20:10you know what, Ben Johnson and no more body language issues.
- 20:14And if he does then said I will crack him immediately if I see
- 20:19bad body language palms up, that's just in his words, a sign
- 20:24of. Of weakness, he said.
- 20:25I'm not going to tolerate it on my football team.
- 20:27And DJ Moore needs to learn Luther Burden's name.
- 20:29That was one of my others because he couldn't think of the
- 20:31kids name that they. Drafted.
- 20:32He's like, yeah, who's that kid we got yet?
- 20:35But like, we lock in on the draft.
- 20:37I can tell you the current players, yeah, right.
- 20:39They don't pay attention. They're not locked in like that.
- 20:42It's a job to them. Yeah, I get it.
- 20:44And to us too. That's why we're locked in
- 20:45Capra. Great stuff, buddy.
- 20:46As always. Thank you, pal.
- 20:48We'll talk to you in seven days. See Buddy.
- 20:49Look forward to it. Good to talk to you, David
- 20:52Kaplan as we catch up on the cap man.
- 20:54You remember when he when he hated council.
- 20:58Likes him now, of course. Funny how that works.
- 21:00All right in. Front in that division and
- 21:02they're going to be tough to run down a centurion stone of Iowa.
- 21:05They sponsor this weekly segment with Cappy that's the website
- 21:09centurion stone of Iowa serving Iowa Nebraska metro areas

- 21:16manufactured or natural stone to accent or update the interior or

- 21:33showroom. The showroom is located at 5525
- 21:36NE 22nd St. in Des Moines and they do have Saturday morning
- 21:41hours, 8 until noon. Joe O'Donnell, the radio voice
- 21:45of the Minnesota Wild, joins Trent and I next Stanley Cup
- 21:48game one tonight. We'll preview it next, Miller
- 21:50and Condon on the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 22:14Hi, Mallory Condon, welcome back.
- 22:16It's the Iowa Sports Radio Network and probably the last
- 22:18time we'll hear it from Old Stomp and Tom Connors for the
- 22:21next few. Months the clips of this this
- 22:24video that I've played it off of YouTube because it does not make
- 22:27our music list here Imagine that yes, but just watching the old
- 22:31hockey highlights from like this probably sixties 70 something
- 22:34like that have you? Seen the the TNT and ESPN both
- 22:37used the lead in with all the old Stanley Cup.
- 22:40Oh no, they're in the locker room.
- 22:42Joe Donald, the radio voice of the Minnesota while Joe do you
- 22:45know what I'm talking about TNT and ESPN using that intro with
- 22:49the Rashards are part of it and Gretzky and some of the some of
- 22:52the greats and then some of the here and now teams.
- 22:55Do you know what I'm talking about Joe?
- 22:56Have you seen it this offseason? I have not.
- 23:00I saw an older one from gosh a couple of years back that had
- 23:05some of those graphics. I think that was an NHL produced
- 23:08one for like the NHL Network and such where they have some of the
- 23:12old Canadians players and stuff. And I just saw on on the Twitter
- 23:16machine there. I'm kind of like AI don't know
- 23:21the little origami, like arts and crafts like kind of piece
- 23:26that they did where like the paper unfolds and it's one guy
- 23:29holding the cup and then the paper crumbles up and then it's
- 23:32Ovechkin. And it's more from like the last
- 23:34probably 15 or so years, a couple winners.
- 23:37And that was whoever did that is way more creative and
- 23:40technologically savvy than anybody on this call right now.
- 23:44And it was really cool. I mean, some of the stuff they
- 23:46come up with today is is awesome from a nostalgia purpose and
- 23:49then just the technology is unbelievable.
- 23:51Yeah, no doubt about it. Joe.
- 23:53Donald mentioned voice of the radio, voice of the Minnesota
- 23:55while joining Trenton, as he has throughout the playoffs.
- 23:58Joe. Well, we're down to two.
- 24:00I'm surprised Edmonton is favored.
- 24:02I'll start there. Florida meaning that they have
- 24:04AI. Think a huge edge between the
- 24:06pipes. I loved what they did leading
- 24:08into the trade deadline, picking up both Seth Jones and the
- 24:12Bruins captain Brad Marshawn. I'm surprised Edmonton is
- 24:16favored. How about you?
- 24:18When I saw tonight in game one alone that Edmonton was favored,
- 24:21I was kind of surprised, Kenny. So I think I'll agree with you
- 24:25there just on a series perspective as well.
- 24:29Look, I thought Carolina had a chance when I talked with you
- 24:31guys to maybe steal game one because Florida had played so
- 24:35recently after their seven game series against Toronto.
- 24:38And I thought of Carolina got game 1A game a chance.
- 24:40They had no chance in that series.
- 24:43And then Edmonton, I thought Dallas had the edge in net with
- 24:46Ottinger and the Dallas would probably prevail in the series.
- 24:49And obviously I was dead wrong there.
- 24:50So these two teams have proven why they're here.
- 24:54I think that's what stands out the most to me, the experience
- 24:57factor of both teams and just hearing, you know, Conor McDavid
- 25:01talk the other day that, you know, last year for the Oilers
- 25:07was a like a roller coaster right here, he said.
- 25:11They haven't really endured the highs and the lows throughout
- 25:13the season, throughout the playoffs, and I feel like that
- 25:16experience factor is going to bode really well for them in the
- 25:19rematch here. When we look at an organization
- 25:22like Florida, which was a laughing stock for a very long
- 25:25time in this league, and now third straight cup and going
- 25:28from back-to-back, what does that say to the other 31 teams
- 25:32of yeah, you can build it now in Sunrise, FL, you can build it in
- 25:35that market. What does it say to the rest of
- 25:37the league? Is there, is there a bit of a
- 25:39blueprint you can take away from what Florida has done recently?
- 25:43I mean, that's a great question, Trent, because as we know, all
- 25:46these sports leagues are copycat leagues, right?
- 25:48Like if you if you're a team that has found sort of a recipe
- 25:54for immediate success, success that gives you some sustained
- 25:58runs in the playoffs over 345 years.
- 26:01And you know, a lot of times other teams will try to mimic
- 26:04it. However, what I think what
- 26:06Florida has done here has just been a really good job of
- 26:10building a team concept. They have so much depth.
- 26:14They have guys that most fans watching tonight's game have
- 26:16never heard of. And they're huge pieces of that
- 26:19franchise and what they're trying to do.
- 26:22They really believe in a team game.
- 26:24They really play the, you know, they're kind of machine like in
- 26:26a lot of ways, the way they come at you and waves, the way they
- 26:29can beat you with their fourth line one night and their top
- 26:32line the next night. They're not going to wow you
- 26:34with unbelievable skill. So I think it's it's kind of
- 26:38hard to mimic what Florida has done.
- 26:40They've developed really well. In fact, they're AHL team.
- 26:43The Charlotte Checkers are headed to the Calder Cup Final
- 26:47now. They could be the first team
- 26:49since 9495 to win both Cups at the NHL and NHL level.
- 26:53So what they've got going on right now in Florida is
- 26:55something special. I'm sure other teams will try to
- 26:57mimic it. I think it's just going to be
- 26:59tough to do. Do you put any credence into the
- 27:02fact that, and I know that biz nasty he was, he put this out
- 27:07there, took some criticism. I kind of buy what he's saying
- 27:10when it comes to, you know, living in states that don't have
- 27:15a state tax like a Florida, like a Vegas who won Cup, like a
- 27:20state of Texas that don't have state tax.
- 27:22Do you put anything into that? Is biz on to something do you
- 27:25think? No, I think so for sure.
- 27:27I mean, just look at what a disadvantage of Canadian markets
- 27:31are at, you know, from a number of factors, right.
- 27:35We don't have to get into all of them.
- 27:36But you know, in some ways, like if they have a harder time,
- 27:39they're they're playing on a different field than than the
- 27:42American teams are from a cap perspective.
- 27:45So yeah, certainly, look, you get the nice weather, you get
- 27:48the, you get the no state tax, which means you're pocketing a
- 27:53couple more $1,000,000, you know, depending on your salary
- 27:56per year or over the term of the contract, depending on how you
- 27:59want to look at it. So I think there's a lot to it.
- 28:02I just know from being in Houston before the team moved to
- 28:05Iowa, guys love living in Houston during hockey season in
- 28:09the summers. They bolted, you know, and a lot
- 28:11of these NHL players, they want to live in Fort Lauderdale all
- 28:15year round. They can if they want to go back
- 28:16to their their home or their home base in the summer and just
- 28:20spend their winters playing hockey in Tampa or Fort
- 28:22Lauderdale. Like there's something to be
- 28:24said for that. I really do believe that in the
- 28:26free agency game in particular, and these teams are having
- 28:30success. Like if I'm a if I'm a free
- 28:32agent, I'm looking, hey, I want to be a winner.
- 28:34I want somewhere my family will be happy.
- 28:37Nice area. Like no offense to a Columbus or
- 28:40a Detroit, but like, where are you going?
- 28:42Right? Like it.
- 28:45There's not a whole lot else that really probably needs to go
- 28:47on the conversation. No.
- 28:49Or if you want to go north or Winnipeg, because it is, you
- 28:52know, you've been there a number of times, don't have to tell you
- 28:55what it's like. Hey, I want to ask you this
- 28:57about Rodgers Place in Edmonton. I heard Sean McDonough, In fact,
- 29:00I've heard a couple of of broadcasters throughout these
- 29:03playoffs say it's such a special environment that it really is as
- 29:06good of an arena as there is in the NHL.
- 29:10On your trips into Rodgers Place, did you find, were you
- 29:13maybe not blown away, but did you think, wow, this is a really
- 29:15cool place? Obviously I love the way they do
- 29:18the anthem there with letting the crowd take over, but is it
- 29:21a, from your perspective, a pretty good arena?
- 29:25Yes, there's a lot of things that make that a really special
- 29:29building and atmosphere, but from a broadcast perspective,
- 29:33the radio guys, we might as well be in Calgary calling the.
- 29:37We are. Now the TV side they put down in
- 29:41the 100 level in the camera base, which a lot of buildings
- 29:45are starting to do now with their TV broadcasters.
- 29:47But from a like Doug plague into the colleague of mine and
- 29:52actually replaced me in Boise, ID 20 some years ago.
- 29:55He's with the Panthers. He's been with them for a number
- 29:57of years now. Unless they're doing something
- 30:00special for him in the Stanley Cup Final, he's going to be so
- 30:02high up and so far back from the ice surface that I feel bad for
- 30:06him. I hope he's got his vision
- 30:08checked recently. So it's it doesn't have great
- 30:11sight lines from a radio broadcast perspective, but the
- 30:14building gets absolutely jumping.
- 30:18You know, it's it is an electric wild have had great deaths in
- 30:22that building and since I've been here.
- 30:24So that's kind of been fun to go up there and quiet that crowd.
- 30:26But I can see why, you know, it's definitely going to have a
- 30:29better atmosphere than than the building in Sunrise.
- 30:32I can tell you that much. It looks to be another tight
- 30:35series here. I think both you guys leading
- 30:37Florida's wave. Palm barista, obviously a great
- 30:40coach there. How about Chris now Block though
- 30:42on the other side, down to nothing to the Kings goalies.
- 30:45Skinner in, Skinner out, back and forth, the job that he has
- 30:48done. How big is the gap between
- 30:50Maurice and Nablock? That's a great question, Trent.
- 30:54And I would say that Maurice has the upper hand, but I would say
- 30:57both guys steady the shift very well.
- 31:00They don't seem to get overly worked up on the bench.
- 31:03They don't seem to be, you know, in the officials ears where it's
- 31:07distracting for their players. They they kind of tactically and
- 31:10methodically managing things back there.
- 31:14And I think Chris Knoblauch coming in is sort of a relative
- 31:17unknown coming from the American Hockey League.
- 31:21You know, mid season last year, he got thrust into a pressure
- 31:24pack situation. A team that was in win now mode
- 31:27dives into the final a year ago down to nothing in the first
- 31:31round here. They caught a bit of a break
- 31:33with the Kings kind of fumbling away that series.
- 31:35But now they're 12 and two cents and they're on an absolute role.
- 31:38So I really believe that, you know, the coaching matchup isn't
- 31:42a huge advantage, but you got to give the getting it done last
- 31:47year. Joe O'Donnell, radio voice of
- 31:49the Minnesota Wild. Joe, enjoy the rest of your
- 31:52summer, whatever that entails. I'm sure you'll have some plenty
- 31:55of duties going around the state, etcetera, you know, with
- 31:59the publicity tours, those type of things.
- 32:01But love the relationship. Joe, thanks for popping on and
- 32:05remembering your time here in Des Moines.
- 32:06We sure appreciate it. Thanks Joe O'Donnell, have a
- 32:08good summer. Yeah, thanks guys.
- 32:10Everybody enjoy the Stanley Cup final.
- 32:12I do hope Edmonton gets it done, but I really think we're in, you
- 32:16know, set up for a classic series of six or seven games and
- 32:19I love the revenge factor for both sides at the stake.
- 32:21It's. Going to be great.
- 32:22Thank you, Joe Appreciate it, buddy.
- 32:24Yep, going to take take care, Joe O'Donnell.
- 32:26The Minnesota Wild kind of feel the same way.
- 32:32Look, the best player in the game usually wins the Stanley
- 32:35Cup at some point in their career.
- 32:37It just is a fact. How old is he?
- 32:40You know, that's a good question.
- 32:41Early 30s. Is he that old?
- 32:43Late. Yeah, I think he's probably
- 32:45right around 30. See, I would have thought that
- 32:47he is like 28. When was his draft year 2000 and
- 32:52what? Let's see.
- 32:53Click on Connor McDavid Wikipedia.
- 32:56He's 28. See, I had that.
- 32:58You nailed it. Well, Mr. Hockey over here,
- 33:00right? The the real hockey fan, John
- 33:03Condon. Let's see.
- 33:05Born in 1997. That makes me feel old that that
- 33:08that 2015 is when he was drafted.
- 33:11And #2 was a kid by the name of Jack Eichel, who is now with the
- 33:15was drafted by the Sabres and now is a Vegas Golden Knight in
- 33:19that draft. Obviously I want Edmonton.
- 33:24I think Florida's going to. Win on Edmonton, think Florida's
- 33:28going to win. We saw the three O deficit
- 33:30erased. Yep, last year.
- 33:32Last year. Yep, from a betting perspective,
- 33:35I win whoever wins. You're good there, so it's not
- 33:38anything. There's one of the years I
- 33:39played the futures. Properly So what does tip the
- 33:41scales? What is the one thing that you
- 33:44say this? Oh, this is the reason. 97 It's
- 33:49that Connor McDavid, the best player.
- 33:52He's the best player. Florida has a big edge between
- 33:56the pipes. Boboski's just better than
- 33:58Skinner. It was a great question about
- 34:01coaching Paul Maurice, and maybe by an inch.
- 34:04But not as big of a gap as I think because I'll be honest, I
- 34:08didn't know who Nabluck was until this playoffs began.
- 34:09And then when he started playing around with Skinner, I'm like,
- 34:12what's going on here? Pushing the right buttons.
- 34:14But he has been so not as big of a gap there.
- 34:18Defensively, Florida's got a big advantage and then they got a
- 34:21big advantage. Goalkeeping.
- 34:23I played just on it's own. I just played the Panthers.
- 34:26I jumped on it was plus. Plus money.
- 34:28Plus 1/12 at Circa. Which is a surprise.
- 34:31I am shocked that they're not the favorite.
- 34:34I thought they would. That'd be close, but I thought
- 34:37that they would be the favorite. Well, think of this, how often
- 34:40do we talk or were even when we're in Vegas, the number of
- 34:43Canadians that are there bar Canada at the D, how many
- 34:48Florida Panther fans are making their way to put down?
- 34:51Yeah, we're not talking life changing money, but those $5000
- 34:56tickets they stick stack up after a while.
- 34:59And how many of those in comparison to what you have?
- 35:02I can understand why Edmonton probably is getting a majority
- 35:05of the money because, well, just general hockey fans.
- 35:07We can report the Canadian team or the team out of Sunrise, FL.
- 35:11He was a laughing stock for the longest time.
- 35:13Often is not the. Case I remember some of those
- 35:15pictures of that arena. I was there once and there was
- 35:18like it. It looked like a what are the
- 35:21Miami Marlins of the Florida Marlins this year?
- 35:24It looked like a Marlins home game, right?
- 35:27Or the Twins in April when there was nobody there.
- 35:30It was just it was embarrassing. Not the case anymore.
- 35:33That's what winning will do. We'll take a time out.
- 35:35Trent's been winning. You better be against Paul
- 35:37Skeens. Yesterday, that was.
- 35:39I thought you were out of your mind.
- 35:40Yeah, I know you did. I saw your face.
- 35:42It was a good hit. 3 and 1 yesterday.
- 35:45By the way, did the Rockies sweep the series?
- 35:48That game was in the 9th. Inning it was 3.
- 35:50Nothing. Last I checked, it's.
- 35:51Over they won. They swept the fish.
- 35:53What's the kind of Rockies? That you could have got the
- 35:56Rockies even against the God forsaken bar.
- 35:58Sweep a series. Sweep Huge.
- 36:01Huge. What could have been?
- 36:04They swept the barn. Where do the Rockies go next?
- 36:07I'm going to check Trent because all of a sudden this Rockies
- 36:10team is on a roll red hot. They the red hot Colorado
- 36:14Rockies come home to face the New York Mets and then San
- 36:18Francisco in that Atlanta. Not a lot of winning coming up,
- 36:22but they that they won this series.
- 36:23I didn't know if they were going to win three games in the month.
- 36:26No, that's one with you. That's what they won in Maine.
- 36:28Remember, Scheffler won 3 events.
- 36:32The Rockies won three games. They've won three straight as of
- 36:35their win today in Miami. Miller and Condon Trent's plays
- 36:39of the day are next. They're sponsored by Circa
- 36:43Sports. That's next on the iOS Sports
- 36:45Radio Network. My final couple of minutes here
- 36:49on a Wednesday. The drive coming up next,
- 36:51Heather and Lucas, they join at the top of the hour and take you
- 36:55until 5:00. Well, plenty of baseball, I
- 37:00think only two day games underway right now, but so the
- 37:03majority under the lights tonight.
- 37:04Course it got a hockey game. No WNB.
- 37:07Hey, the Fever 1 yesterday. They did.
- 37:09How about that? Got it done minus Caitlin.
- 37:13Now we wait for Saturday, where Don Staley will be in the
- 37:18studio. Will she?
- 37:19For the national big CBSKCCI locally KGAN in eastern Iowa N
- 37:26Iowa, KIMT in western Iowa. You don't have it.
- 37:31You were on a real roll there. I was really impressed.
- 37:34I just read something about Don Staley, the the toughest loss of
- 37:37her career. General it was.
- 37:39I was there for it. You were.
- 37:40It was in Dallas. Yeah, Caitlin triple doubled
- 37:43her. That took a while, she said to
- 37:45In fact, she's still not apparently over it.
- 37:47Well, we can tell there's kind of sticks in her craw a little.
- 37:50Bit yeah, although the next year when they came back and won it
- 37:53though, she couldn't, you know, stole any more praise, as she
- 37:58should have anyway. So what are you betting on?
- 38:01I'm going to bet on baseball. There is in fact no WNBA at all
- 38:04tonight. No.
- 38:05So they are completely off until tomorrow as the Commissioners
- 38:09Cup continues. Maybe, I don't know.
- 38:11I don't know how that thing works.
- 38:13It doesn't feel like it's resonating at a very high level.
- 38:16We have two plays, one this early evening, the Astros -124.
- 38:22Again. Yeah.
- 38:24It's Burroughs that gets a start for the Pirates, says the RA.
- 38:27Well, it's under 9. Oh, so it's headed in the right
- 38:30direction. 8.64 You know, on the other side, Gusto hasn't been
- 38:33great himself. Still, the Astros, a much better
- 38:36team -124 will jump aboard on that one.
- 38:39Talked about the ineptitude of the Oakland.
- 38:41Nope, the no, just the Athletics.
- 38:44We're going to play them. Against Zebby Matthews.
- 38:48Zebby Matthews is not there yet. A lefty in Springs who's been OK
- 38:52now he is not listed officially, at least when I was looking
- 38:55earlier today as the starter. I put this in as Springs only
- 38:59start. If somebody else gets a start,
- 39:01my bet will be void. That is something that you can
- 39:03do. You can bet, and I did that with
- 39:06this one. So if Springs is not there, he
- 39:08will not be part of the bet. The losing streak comes to an
- 39:11end. Oakland, Nope.
- 39:13Sacramento, Nope. The Athletics 171.
- 39:17Good stuff. That's going to do it for us.
- 39:18I appreciate you being with us. The drive is coming up next.
- 39:22They'll take you until 5:00. We're Miller and Condon.
- 39:24Trent and I talk sports with you Monday through Friday from noon
- 39:27until 2 on the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
