Of today's feast, Dom Gaspar Lefebvre writes the following, The son of Ptolemy or Bartholomew is, according to common opinion, the disciple whom Saint Philip brought to our Lord under the name of Nathaniel and whom the master praised on account of his innocence in the simplicity of his heart. For the Gospel of St. John, never mentioning St.

Bartholomew among the Apostles, says that Philip and Nathaniel came together to Jesus and that he was among the disciples to whom the Savior appeared after the resurrection on the shore of the Sea Of Galilee. The other Gospels never use the name of Nathaniel, but after Philip they always mention Bartholomew. Born at Cana in Galilee, he was placed by Jesus among the 12 and he was a witness of the principal actions of Jesus upon the earth. The first gift vouchsafed to the church by the Holy Ghost, says Saint Paul in the epistle, is the grace of apostleship. He preached the faith in Arabia Felix.

According to certain traditions, he was flayed alive. He is thus represented in the beautiful white marble statue by Chibo in the Milan Cathedral. His relics are venerated at Rome in the Church of Saint Bartholomew on an island formed by the Tiber. His name is mentioned in the Canon of the Mass among the Apostles. Let us joyfully celebrate the feast of Saint Bartholomew who in heaven praises God among the glorious choir of Apostles.
• 2:21
And let us ask of God as we do in the Collect to grant to his church to love what he believed and to preach what he himself taught. In the name of the Father and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen. The introit. Great reverence have I for thy friends, O God.
• 2:52
Sovereign power is theirs in abundance. Lord, I lie open to thy scrutiny. Thou knowest me, knowest when I sit down and when I rise up again. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost as it was in the beginning is now and will be through all ages of ages. Amen.
• 3:22
Great reverence have I for thy friends, O God, sovereign power is theirs in abundance. The Collect, let us pray. Almighty everlasting God, who hast given us a reverent and holy joy in this day's festival of thy blessed Apostle Bartholomew, grant we pray thee that thy church may love what he believed and preach what he taught through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen. Lesson from the first letter of Saint Paul the Apostle to the Corinthians.
• 4:18
Brethren, you are Christ's body, organs of it depending upon each other. God has given us different positions in the church, apostles first, then prophets, and thirdly teachers. Then come miraculous powers, then gifts of healing, works of mercy, the management of affairs, speaking with different tongues, and interpreting prophecy. Are all of us Apostles, all prophets, all teachers, have all miraculous powers or gifts of healing? Can all speak with tongues?
• 5:05
Can all interpret? Prize the best gifts of heaven. The gradual. Thou wilt divide a world between them for their domains. Thy name, Lord, will never be forgotten.
• 5:24
Thou shalt have sons worthy of thy fathers. Therefore nations shall do thee honor. Alleluia. Alleluia. The glorious company of the Apostles, Lord, gives praise to thee.
• 5:42
Alleluia. A continuation of the Holy Gospel according to Luke. It was at that time that Jesus went out onto the mountainside and passed the whole night offering prayer to God. And when day dawned, he called his disciples to him choosing out 12 of them. These he called Apostles.
• 6:12
Their names were Simon who is also called Peter and his brother Andrew, James and John, Philip and Bartholomew, Matthew and Thomas, James the son of Alpheus, and Simon who is called the zealot, Jude the brother of James, and Judas Iscariot the man who turned traitor. With them he went down and stood on a level place. A multitude of his disciples was there and a great gathering of the people from all Judea and Jerusalem in the sea coast of Tyre and Sidon. These had come there to listen to him and to be healed of their diseases. And those who were troubled by unclean spirits were also cured, so that all the multitude was eager to touch him because power went out from him and healed them all.
• 7:26
The Offertory. Great reverence have I for thy friends, O God. Sovereign power is theirs in abundance. The secret. Lord, as we keep the feast of thy blessed Apostle Bartholomew, we pray that we may receive blessings from thee by his aid, in whose honor we devote these sacrificial gifts to Thy praise through our Lord Jesus Christ Thy Son who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost God through all ages of ages.
• 8:11
Amen. The preface of Apostles. Just it is indeed and fitting right and for our salvation to entreat thee humbly, O Lord, that you would not desert thy flock, O everlasting shepherd, but through thy blessed Apostles, would keep it under thy constant protection, that it may be governed by those same rulers whom as vicars of thy work thou didst set over it to be its pastors. And therefore with angels and archangels, with thrones and dominions, and with all the hosts of the heavenly army, we sing the hymn of thy glory, saying without ceasing, holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts, the heavens and the earth are full of thy glory. Hosanna in the highest.
• 9:14
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. The communion. You who have followed me shall sit on seats judging the 12 tribes of Israel. The Post Communion Let us pray.
• 9:41
We have received the pledge of our eternal ransom, Lord. May it help us at the intercession of thy blessed Apostle Bartholomew both in this life and in the life to come through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, through all ages of ages. Amen. In the name of the Father, and of the son and of the holy ghost. Amen.
