- 0:11Can't you morons do anything right? Four Finger Discount Dude, Welcome to
- 0:32fourth Finger Discount of the podcast where us morons never get anything right. This
- 0:35week we're going back all the way to an episode four f zero seven.
- 0:39It is Hurricane that Nettie, I am Dando and I am Guy enjoying a
- 0:43Jerry Jerry camp full of squishy That would be delicious. It's also delicious our
- 0:49guest that we have on today's show. Here's the man who chose this episode
- 0:52episode specifically because he has a really really amazing piece of Simizons memorabilia. In
- 0:56fact, he has probably, I say it's the best Simpson's collection ever.
- 0:59He called it the worst. It's mister Michael waving. How you're doing good?
- 1:02Sir? Oh, I'm good? Thanks a lot for having me.
- 1:03Yeah, so you chose Hurricane Neddie to art to review on the show here
- 1:07today, tell us why why I specifically did you choose this episode? What
- 1:11do you have in your possession that all our Simptons fans are gonna be very
- 1:14jealous of. Well. Apart from being just an absolute banger of an episode
- 1:18in its own right, the centerpiece of my collection is I've actually got two
- 1:25animation cells from the Flanders mental breakdown scene as well as a like a storyboard
- 1:33page from that as well. It's like you can see all the little pencil
- 1:36eraser marks and stage directions and stuff, and those are both signed by David
- 1:42Silverman. So one of the directors, which yeah, David Silman is just
- 1:45like one of He's like he's one of the bosses of the Simptons man like,
- 1:48he's like he's been there from the beginning. I think he like didn't
- 1:49he like draw like the opening intro? Yeah, something to do with the
- 1:53opening intro. Basically, he's been there from the beginning of the Favorites.
- 1:57He's the biggest of whigs. Yeah, yeah, the og of ogs.
- 2:02So how did you how did you come into possession with that? Was that
- 2:05just like at an auction? Did you bite off another fan? How did
- 2:07that happen? Um? There was a there was a gallery in Armadale here
- 2:12called silver k They do a lot about used to see the adulely late at
- 2:16night in that old guy that runs the place. Yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 2:19Colin, he was great. Yeah, he's the one who helps me
- 2:21with it. Oh yeah, he seems like the nicest guy. Yeah,
- 2:24he really knows his stuff. And they often do like comic book stuff,
- 2:29Disney art, like classic Looney Tunes, all sorts of animation, and they've
- 2:34had a few Simpsons exhibitions there. So I went along to one once and
- 2:38yeah, I picked up a couple of bits. Then what did it cost
- 2:39you? If you don't want us ask him? The cell on its own
- 2:44was eight hundred, and the selling storyboard was I think fourteen hundred. So
- 2:50okay, so you dropped wow, we Well, one of them was actually
- 2:54a gift. I bought the gift. Yeah, I bought the cell store
- 3:00board combo myself and my partner at the time actually brought me the cell separately.
- 3:07So I'm assuming she then file for bankruptcy. And that's where no one
- 3:10gonna get I mean, I was just gonna say that, because you've got
- 3:15a lovely lady in your life right now, the amount of Simpsons stuff that
- 3:19you got in your place, you're very lucky that she puts up with it.
- 3:21Obviously she's a Simpsons fan. As well. But I mean, I've
- 3:23got my lovely wife Nicoli here, and guy's got his lovely Louise. I
- 3:25am starting to do a bit of a clean out because obviously got two small
- 3:29kids running around as well. But I'd love to have what you have in
- 3:31your house, but I just don't think my wife would allow it. It's
- 3:37tough. Cool. Thankfully the collection was here first, so I think that's
- 3:42part of it. But no, it helps that she's a massive fan herself.
- 3:45Okay, cool? Or did she become one after meeting you? Like?
- 3:47Was she a fan and then she had becomes a hat to become a
- 3:50super fan after meeting you just seeped in the minute you walk in the house.
- 3:53It's like I got no choice. No, there was definitely. Yeah.
- 3:59She gets all the quotes, she quotes back. She's better than me
- 4:00at remembering some of this stuff, which is which is great. This is
- 4:03the difference. Nicola. Tonight, we'll get we're getting dinner ready and she's
- 4:06like, which one are you doing tonight? I said Hurricane Nettie, where
- 4:10Flanner's house falls down during the hurricane, and she's like, yeah, I
- 4:13think I've seen that one. I was like, well, man, my
- 4:15wife's barely sending into Simpton's episodes, but gotta love it. I don't even
- 4:19tell Lou it's like you're doing the sentsence tonight. Yeah, but yes,
- 4:24your your Simpsons collection is one of the most famous collections in the world.
- 4:27Now it's been all over the news, but we will get into that in
- 4:30a little bit more detail later on in the episode. But here today to
- 4:31talk about, as you said, Hurricane Nettie, what do you love so
- 4:34much about this episode? Michael? I know you've got the selling things like
- 4:38that, so you've got that sort of connection with it. But what particularly
- 4:40do you love about this episode? Because I think it gives a really great
- 4:43insight into Flanders that we never saw beforehand, except maybe in home alas Sland
- 4:46is where he sort of let's slip that he can let loose at times.
- 4:50Yeah, that's a good point, I think. Yeah, it's definitely a
- 4:55bit like what was this seven seasons in, so they're finally starting to do
- 4:59a bit more in depth character explorations on these people who have been kind of
- 5:02a one one note joke for the entire series so far. So getting like
- 5:08an understanding of why he's just so relentlessly nice kind is kind of fun and
- 5:14something that, yeah, the show can start to do after a while,
- 5:16because we're up to season seventeen right now doing the show, and sometimes they
- 5:20explore characters and you think, ah, coming Book guys a good example.
- 5:25They explored his character a lot, and it's like, I'd prefer just be
- 5:28a one note. But I think the way they handled it, the way
- 5:30Bill and Josh handled this one, because they were the show runners at the
- 5:32time, the way they handled this one was just a perfection. Really yeah.
- 5:35And I mean even besides that, like just individual gags. It it's
- 5:41so dense with individual jokes that are just gold and even yeah, I don't
- 5:46know, like I have a bit of a story nerd myself, and so
- 5:47I love how specifically it follows that, like the three act structure and they've
- 5:53got Okay, so the first act hurricane act jam, all of the hurricane
- 5:57jokes in that you can get. Second one, Flanders has a crisis of
- 6:00faith, which is an interesting exploration in itself. Third and then that scene
- 6:05where he's like going through the house that they've built and just like the shoddy
- 6:11worksmanship, that's just that's an all Teimer and then that whole second act an
- 6:15all timer. Yeah, and then yeah, the third actor, You've got
- 6:20the whole the backstory why he's like that. It's just yeah, which and
- 6:25they're all funny for all different reasons. But yeah, I just think like
- 6:28that that rant from Flanders in particular is just like peak Flanders. But I
- 6:31was going to say to you, guy, I was watching this thinking there
- 6:33was more funny moments in that little ninety second rant from Flanders then what I
- 6:39reckon has been in like the entire season seventeen so far, every line was
- 6:45just hitting its mark. It was so good. Oh you're not wrong.
- 6:46Yeah, I mean it's it's like since Ned was was flandering, like Flandering,
- 6:55Let's try that again, shall we. It's like Flanders was channeling Don
- 6:59Rickles or one. You know, It's like it was like the best insult
- 7:01comic in the world and just you know, just a sharp shoot of just
- 7:05nailing target after target after target, hitting the most vulnerable spots just perfectly.
- 7:10Yeah. I mean I am an absolute sucker for a good Worm turns moment.
- 7:15And I mean one doesn't like to see anything bad happen to Ned.
- 7:19I mean, he's so pure. I think we're all a bit Homer every
- 7:23once in a while, ago like, oh my god, this guy is
- 7:25so pious and annoying, but he's so pure of heart that I'm like,
- 7:28oh man, it kind of sucks when things go south for him, and
- 7:33yeah, but for him to for the devil to make him do it essentially
- 7:39in this scene, it's just so wonderful. I think it was perfect choice
- 7:42too, where they selected Marge to be the first person for him to attack.
- 7:45It's like, with all the people in Springfield, who's the one who
- 7:46probably deserves at the least, it's Marge. He goes for the jokular straight
- 7:50away. It's just like, oh, shit's getting real. But what I
- 7:54really loved after that is that, you know, Bart sort of step standing
- 7:58up like oh you know, oh well, yeah that's cool. We know,
- 8:01we really respect that. But for him just turn around and say used
- 8:05to you know, here's a catchphrase, Hey man, got a quarter?
- 8:09Oh yeah, that's right, I have shocked and all that's that Bart's reaction.
- 8:18There's one of those lines that I say all the time but always forget
- 8:22that it's even a Simpsons quote, Like it's so applicable. Yeah, this
- 8:26is one of the great things about going back and doing episodes. From the
- 8:28quote unquote golden years, I mean, I think it's been a long it's
- 8:31certainly been a long time since I watched Hurricane Nettie. But later in the
- 8:35later in the episode, in the third act, where they're at Calmwood,
- 8:39Calmwood, Yeah, yeah, yeah, and doctor Foster is welcoming the Simpsons
- 8:43in and telling the rest of the family to go and have a brows around
- 8:48the fields or whatever. That whole line about one of my pasions accountable trying
- 8:52to guess which one I think would be pleasantly surprised. I'm like, oh,
- 8:56that sort of lived in my head, for goodness, Downes a long
- 8:58but I've forgotten exactly where it from, where it was from, and the
- 9:01exact context of it. But that whole I think it'll be pleasantly surprised.
- 9:05Just the doors. I was so so happy to see that here. I
- 9:09always hate me God have Messiano say my favorite. But enough about his quote
- 9:16in the episode. Let's get into a sort of our favorite moment. So
- 9:18for me in particular, I just love the Homer's reaction to the house falling
- 9:22down to the shoot, like shit, and there's that there's that shot of
- 9:28Flounder's about to sort of like Rand. He's sort of like fixing his glasses
- 9:31and Home was just in the background scratching his head like how did that happen?
- 9:35It was just beautifully done. But what about you guy? Um?
- 9:37Like I said, I like, I love a good worm turns of.
- 9:39That whole scene when Ned was fantastic. Yeah, that's yeah. Seeing young
- 9:45Ned and what a little HELLI and he was was fantastic. I mean,
- 9:48just that movie of like, I'm crazy. Take that prune vase now I'm
- 9:52prune tracing. That'd be fair. I never actually picked up until kind of
- 9:58recently, where that implying that he's going to go next? Do you know
- 10:03what I mean? Yeah, as a kid, you have no idea what's
- 10:05going on? Yeah? I never understood that. I mean it was funny
- 10:07just visually because of what was happening. I never got it till I was
- 10:11older. Yeah. Yeah. And the whole freaky beat next thing after that
- 10:15is nothing idea. That's the other The other thing I love about it is
- 10:22have you guys heard of Dankmus? He does, like yeah, yeah,
- 10:26and so he's got all out of Ideas is one of his remixes, which
- 10:31is an absolute banger, as all of them are dank, the some I
- 10:35want to say he stole my bed for ages when when I was young girl,
- 10:43I always wanted to um take that line of Lisa's saying we got beats
- 10:48and put a beat behind it. And then when I found Dan was gone,
- 10:52I can't. I can't be angry. This so good. It is
- 10:58catchier than it has any rights one. Going back and reviewing this episode because
- 11:01it'd been a while since I've revisited this one, there was actually several lines
- 11:05that I just completely missed as a kid growing up in particularly in that scene
- 11:07where he's going crazy and that his parents are there where he's like coveral of
- 11:11those books, some of them haven't been discredited yet. I've never heard that
- 11:15line. I just never picked up on it. It was so good.
- 11:18But some of my favorite moments also were the well cause if you need anything,
- 11:24just leading plan it's in the rubble. Any more brain busters? All
- 11:28right now, Michael, we have to have a little segment here on our
- 11:33four finger discount where it's called the blockbuster Brainbuster, And what we do is
- 11:35we go back to when this episode originally aired that that week, and we
- 11:39try and guess the top three films at the US box office for that week.
- 11:43Right now, the original edit of this episode was December twenty ninth of
- 11:48nineteen ninety six, so this episode originally aired the very end of ninety six.
- 11:52What do you think were the top three films at the US bucks office?
- 11:56I'll give you us some clues. I'll say the clues. Michael,
- 11:58you can have a quick think, and then Guy I can try and Charming
- 12:00as well, because Guy is the movie Guy. So first one is Angel.
- 12:05He's an easy clue for number two, show me the clue, all
- 12:09right, that was number two. Number three is black and white. And
- 12:13there's four and five or so four and five at that time where Beavis and
- 12:16butt head to America and scream so good four and five. But to the
- 12:20top three, number one, Angel is the clue, Two is show me
- 12:22the clue, and three is black and white. What do you reckon those
- 12:26films might be? Michael Man, all right, yeah, that's a tough
- 12:28one movie a bad an Angel, a movie about someone showing somebody something,
- 12:33and a movie that had something that was black and white in it, something
- 12:37that was black and white. All right, so the first one, I
- 12:39mean, what even movies about angels are there. I'm probably going this is
- 12:43too deep a cut. But that Michael one with yeah, would be about
- 12:50to say the next clue is irving. I remember that was that John Travolta
- 12:58and it was good? Was that a good movie? Guy? I can't
- 13:00remember? Was a bad movie? Bad? It was the first movie I
- 13:03saw it with my ex wife when we when we first started seeing each other.
- 13:05Maybe this had the bad memories of it then because of that. No,
- 13:09didn't start out I didn't start out of my wife. But it reminds
- 13:13you of times that have once been Anyway, Yes, Michael's number one,
- 13:16number two. Obviously you're gonna guess this one, right, show me the
- 13:18clue. That's gotta be Jerry McGuire. It is. Jerry McGuire was number
- 13:22two. So John Devolza tipped him out with the Angel movie number three.
- 13:24A film that has a lot of black and white things in it? Would
- 13:28it have more than a hundred? Has just a little bit more than a
- 13:31hundred of all right? All right, I was gonna like Shindler's List,
- 13:37that'd be one hundred one Elmaians. Yeah, the live action one. Was
- 13:41it clean? Close? Wasn't it as Cruella? Yeah that sounds right.
- 13:45Yeah, I remember being marketed heavily like when I was a kid, like
- 13:46all of the McDonald's happy Meals and things like that. Yeah, it was
- 13:50a big deal. But yeah, so Michael Jerry McGuire one hundred mind Damasians
- 13:52were the top three films, and then Babs and Buddy'd do America and Scream
- 13:56coming in for four and five. So a good five films, solid solid
- 14:00outing that week. Nineties a better time certainly. Indeed, I completely forgot
- 14:05that Michael was even a movie Like that's just got no cultural impact in this
- 14:11day at all. Scream is five, and that still feels real, Like,
- 14:16yeah, did they reboot Scream or Scream five sort of like a reboot
- 14:22legacy sequel? I think yeah, where it's got some of the old characters
- 14:26but mainly new ones. Got quite a reboot. Next question, you're there
- 14:31eating the beast. Okay, I've got a couple of trivia questions for you,
- 14:33gentlemen. My first question, mister Davis, is who does Reverend love
- 14:37Joy offer a book of too Flanders. He's got a book of him in
- 14:41his office. I think of Garth Uncle, Well, hang on, it's
- 14:45art Linger. Oh yeah. Oh. I was like, I'm drawing to
- 14:52draw a connection there. It was like, oh, okay, all right,
- 14:56what's your first question? Guy? My first question to you is when
- 15:00to the Hall of Records blow away? Well? Do you know this?
- 15:01Michael? Oh? Was it nineteen seventy four? Eight? I think it
- 15:07was. Wasn't it a little later? Nineteen seventy eight? Homer and Marge
- 15:11in the class of nineteen seventy four. Oh, maybe That's where I'm getting
- 15:13it from. So though, in the class of seventy four, shouldn't that
- 15:18mean they would have known they'd already been a hurricane and Springfield and known White
- 15:20mysteriously disappeared. Well, they would have been the early twenties in and just
- 15:24you know, only having eyes for each other. Okay, then wouldn't have
- 15:28trust Homer's memory on anything anyway? Really, yes, it's probably drunk.
- 15:31My other question is what room number was Flanders in? He was in room
- 15:35one O seven one O seven correct? Was I thought it was going to
- 15:39be one of those ones that's like it's the production of a code. Yeah,
- 15:43they always slipped those in. There was like four four seven, so
- 15:46one oh seven kinder yeah, seven in there. It kind of works.
- 15:50Yeah, yeah, all right, And you guys asked this one more question,
- 15:52we'll move on. Who sponsored the medical movie? Oh one, this
- 15:58one? Do you know, Michael, Oh, hang on, it's Swanson
- 16:02something. No, I don't remember at all. Swanson's Angry Man's Dinners,
- 16:07which was a takeoff. Apparently there was a thing about Swanson's Hungry Man's Dinners.
- 16:11Hungry Man Dinners like TV dinners. Yeah, slightly bigger. You know,
- 16:14when you go to the frozen food section, they've got like meals for
- 16:17a man. It's like maybe twenty percent bigger pub size. It's like,
- 16:22okay, really shit pub Yes. The four Fingure Discount Network is brought to

- 17:12nineteen ninety six. As we just said earlier, written by Steve Young
- 17:15and directed by Bob Anderson, it guests our John Lovets, says Jay Sherman
- 17:18in the Combard Mental Hospital, and yeah, we do love John Lovets.
- 17:22You'll soon find that out, Michael, we do love John loves In the
- 17:25show, and the cotch gaggle was the couch is replaced with a coin slot.
- 17:29In the words vendor couch appear on the wall. At the Homer inserts
- 17:30a coin, nothing happens. He hits on the wall and it comes down
- 17:33and hits him on the head. So the episode kicks off with Homer just
- 17:37relaxing on a hammock. And I'm going to be honest, I've actually never
- 17:40had to sleep in a hammock before. If you guys have had a sleep
- 17:41in a hammock. Oh yeah, I never have at my old house.
- 17:45I used to have one, okay, and a on a not necessarily summer
- 17:49day, but on a spring day. That's better there, right? Nice?
- 17:55What about really nice? Yeah, we used to have one in the
- 17:57backyard of when my brother and I lived together. I spent many in the
- 18:02evening out there, and yeah, good. I don't think I've ever fallen
- 18:04asleep though, hm hm, pressure dropping, humidity rising over eight percent,
- 18:12increasing wind. Here we are chapter two, so your pressure is dropping drop.
- 18:29I think I arrigated coming. Oh, Lisa, there's no record of
- 18:33a hurricane ever hitting Springfield. Yes, but the records only go back to
- 18:37nineteen seventy eight when the Hall of Records was mysteriously blown away. What is
- 18:44your point, earth quake, Hippi hurricane? How the animals are always the
- 18:52first to know. I always feel so sad. I always think of the
- 18:56animals when there's a disaster or natural disaster or some kind. The first thing
- 18:59I think of his animals. I don't know about you guys, but I'm
- 19:00like, oh, there's poor dogs and cats Like I don't understand. It's
- 19:03every man for himself in no situations, but man, it's just so sad.
- 19:07Well, yeah, I mean it was a big visual gag in Twister.
- 19:10You know when the cow sort of flying through the eye. Yeah,
- 19:11poor cows. You're like the guy at the when Home is doing a stand
- 19:17up the poor cow. Then we get the Brockman news report, which I
- 19:22think was amazing. I'm Supplices didn't make your favorite moments. If you think
- 19:27the sexist naming after a woman you've never seen the girls at a clearance.
- 19:32But he shouldn't say it, Harry, Harry shere is always an MVP in
- 19:37my eyes, but honestly he has just kicking goal after goal in this episode.
- 19:42I mean, I wanted to go through this in some of my favorite
- 19:45bits, but I mean some of his some of the lines from like I'm
- 19:49skipping ahead, I'm sorry when the left or rim has been been losing,
- 19:53try to look it in the mat, try to go back brilliant. The
- 19:57whole Reverend Loved Joe thing is like short answer yes, but with an long
- 20:03answer yes, with a no with the butt, no with the but it's
- 20:07like, that's great. I'd love that writing and I love that delivery.
- 20:11And of course everything he does with ned is of course, yeah, this
- 20:14This was really a showcase for Harry Share. It wasn't it this episode?
- 20:17It really was. If he didn't get I would hope he would be nominated
- 20:19for Emmy's or any other award. You certainly hope no Peace Prize. But
- 20:23they're just that that it's true, but he shouldn't say it. It's just
- 20:26like the best way to respond. There's something that everyone knows is true,
- 20:30but she's just like that hasn't Yeah, I'm surprised that hasn't become a meme,
- 20:34Like it hasn't. Kind you see it comment threads sometimes, you know.
- 20:37Yeah, there's the Falcon and winter Soldier thing with I was like,
- 20:42he's out of line, but he's right. It's like, well, that's
- 20:45exactly the same thing us March. So they're got to pick up some supplies
- 20:48at the quickie mark. He's taking his seventy people at a time, and
- 20:51I immediately thought of people rushing to get tilet paper during the pandemic. Yeah,
- 20:55it's funny how this episode takes on a whole new meeting because we've never
- 20:57lived through a disasse, like a hurricane of things like that, thankfully,
- 21:00but the pandemic. You watch this now and just like, oh shit,
- 21:03this is what it was like. You know when we used to have to
- 21:04line up, do you go into the supermarket? Yeah, only letting two
- 21:10people into the time or something like that. It was crazy like and the
- 21:11fact that like it just doesn't even get talked about it anymore. It was
- 21:14just what we literally lost two years of our life. It was just it
- 21:18was amazing. It was great, feel like a weird fever dream of a
- 21:21thing. Yeah, but it must be like I don't go back into our
- 21:23podcast after I finished editing and putting them out there. But people often say
- 21:26that it's interesting just listening to us do the podcast during the pandemic. They're
- 21:32like, so many people say that you just gave us a little of that
- 21:34little beam of entertainment to threat the pandemic, where you know, you guys
- 21:37were just chugging along. It just made me realize that I just need to
- 21:41just chug along as well. But Kirki tries to be a big man and
- 21:45say, let's just beat him up. No, no, no, do
- 21:48not listen to this man. Remain calm. You'll all have a chance to
- 21:53be gouched. That's another line that I missed as a kid. And everyone
- 21:57enters obviously goes crazy. Coach just gets left beaten and disheveled and then just
- 22:02shops just taking advantage. So catch Ow is now Hurricane Chowken. He's still
- 22:07in the squishy as you were mentioning earlier, mister Davis. And they find
- 22:11creamed eels and corn noog and waded beef, and I'd probably try what a
- 22:15beef of those three things. I don't think I'd go anywhere near creamed eels
- 22:18if I had to eat cornogor would, But what are beef is certainly where
- 22:21I'm going for. Yes, indeed, eels are revolting. I've eaten them
- 22:26exactly. Once went to a Japanese restaurant and it's like I'm going to be
- 22:30adventurous and try eel, And then I was adventurous and try to eel and
- 22:33regretted it to this day. Or maybe if they were creamed, Yeah,
- 22:37were they creamed eals or they just eel? I don't know how they prepared
- 22:41them. I honestly they just went down this was it was a Japanese restaurant
- 22:47sort of on the water. It was down in Rippleside Park. Yeah,
- 22:51they went down to the water and just plugged the eels out and put them
- 22:53in pla. I don't think they cooked them at all. If you didn't
- 22:56know it was eel, though, do you think it would have changed your
- 22:59person option of what you were tasting? No, I was eager. I
- 23:03was like, oh, eel fantastic. I'm adding this to my culinary vocabulary,
- 23:10you know, because I mean I've tried various animals eating them that is,
- 23:15and yeah, and often been. I think it would be pleasantly surprised.
- 23:18But I mean, you know, I tried buffalo and goat and all
- 23:21that kind of things, like buffalo will I mean, how do you buy
- 23:22buffalo? We obviously in another country? This was yeah, this was years
- 23:27ago, okay, um, and was like you can have buffalo, but
- 23:30where though where? I've forgotten it? Actually, I think it was even
- 23:34in Melbourne, but it was like decades ago. I think my favorite weird
- 23:40animal I've eaten was crocodile. You just feel really smug eating something that could
- 23:45actually eat me first time. I mean technically a dog probably eat it.
- 23:49If it one or two, you'd have to really imply itself. Way do
- 23:53you eat his dog regularly? What I've eating dog? But people do eat
- 23:57dogs on yourself. What do you think of crocodile because I've tried it as
- 24:03well and I found it extremely bland. Yeah, it's a bit. It's
- 24:06like salty chicken. Really, I wasn't a fan. It was more just
- 24:10being able to say I've eaten it, really, but I love salt and
- 24:12I love chicken. Was it like salty salt or chicken salt though, because
- 24:15guys on the fan of chicken salt, I'm big on chicken salt. Oh,
- 24:18yeah it was. I wouldn't say it was chicken salty. It's chicken
- 24:22and salt together, isn't it not making a combination of chicken salt? WHOA?
- 24:26Well, apparently there's no actual chicken in chicken. It's just Australians like
- 24:33to eat the most that chicken. Let's called chicken salt. The last pineapple
- 24:40and plenty right too. But I'm not fruit on my head. That's what
- 24:45the pumpkins said. Hi, Lisa, we're going to be in a pie,
- 24:51Sir. For your own safety, we do advise you to evacuate.
- 24:53I ain't cleaving. I was born in the snurching home and up die in
- 24:59the snurching home. Oh is there any chance if you're changing your mind,
- 25:02sure, let's go. The Simpsons are now preparing. Homer is hammering a
- 25:06door to the window and Ned invites them in here. He's like, he
- 25:11politely says, I'll be a third wheel. Oh no, I would make
- 25:14it my business to be a third wheel. Okay, the Flanders. You
- 25:18think he's going to be safe and sound, he's all got his ship together.
- 25:21He walks off, so they do the standard Grandpa drill. They all
- 25:23head into the basement, and then hurricane. I always love it when they
- 25:27do a takeoff of the intro. They do it in with the Thompsons And
- 25:30what was the one we did recently? Guy with the fat Bart? Um,
- 25:36what I'm going to say? What did I say? Though? Damn
- 25:38it's three weeks later? Three weeks later? Yeah yeah, yeah that's right.
- 25:42Yeah, but it's the opening intro. But Bart's really fat. I
- 25:45really liked that episode. I thought it was really really good. I like
- 25:47that one. Um. But yeah, so the hurricane started, we get
- 25:49the classic Simpsons gag. This is like like a Swatz Wilder gag with the
- 25:53prisoner hitting the electric wires. I think my favorite gag in that and it's
- 26:00probably the next one is that where like blows into the harmonicas store like.
- 26:07But before that, though, marcays, we should distract ourselves or something.
- 26:11Let's try this Rubik's cube. And I've never understood how to solve a Rubis
- 26:15cube. I just don't get it. I was about to say, I've
- 26:17never solved one in my life. I've got frustrated with several of them,
- 26:21just left them half done. I just can't do it. But there's a
- 26:22video online. Obviously there's plenty of videos of people doing this, but it
- 26:26was a child, like on a plane or something. They hand him this
- 26:27Rubik's cube. He just goes and he just does it, and then they
- 26:30sort of mix it all up and they handed to him. He sort of
- 26:33assesses it, he turns it around, he looks at it, and then
- 26:37like three seconds it's it's done. It's like, I don't know how he
- 26:38does it. It's incredible. Oh man, I was a teenager and song
- 26:44in the middle of the original Rubik's Cube craze. Yeah. Yeah, And
- 26:48they came up with all these other variations on, like the Rubic Snake,
- 26:52but there was also like the Rubic pyramid, okay, and I saw that
- 26:55and I thought, oh my god, that's the shit Christmas and I've got
- 27:00one. And that was the one variation on ruby that I was ever able
- 27:03to, not even able to well, I solved it, but I was
- 27:07also I became one of those winkers, like, look at this cool pattern
- 27:11that I make when I turned this, this, and this, and everyone's
- 27:15looking at him. Good. This has been one of the defining traits of
- 27:19mygsins. I love variations on things, like you know, anytime there's Carlton
- 27:26Nita Brewery are bringing out a new beer and like, I'm trying that,
- 27:29but you are meg on treats like desserts or potato chips. It's vetie mate
- 27:33flavor, it's meatpie phoebes, like yeah, please, then you try to
- 27:37like there is cheese and onion, yeah, but they put a bit of
- 27:42chicken sold on. I just like the way that, like when you were
- 27:45younger, you're still clever enough to think of an out for the reason you
- 27:48couldn't solve it, Like I can't solve it, but look at the patterns.
- 27:51Well, no, I did solve it, but then I was so
- 27:53good at it. I was able to make patterns as well. But why
- 27:57haven't got a Ruby's up? Wa get this? Can pyramid idiots with you?
- 28:02There is of course a Simpson's Rubik's Cube here somewhere shaped like Homer's head,
- 28:08so it's like a three model of his head. I yeah, I've
- 28:11been too afraid to mix it up because I don't think I'll ever get back
- 28:14in the right spot. You know what. I pride myself on knowing that
- 28:17I've got some stuff that you don't have. Ah, it tears me up
- 28:21inside, not for long. Is that thing I said your ages to go?
- 28:29The handheld game? Oh? Yeah, that was that? The cupcake
- 28:32one? No, it's a cupcake. It's just like you know the little
- 28:34handheld games used to have, like Laddin and Buying Key and things like that.
- 28:38I don't think it's cupcakes in it, but it's just that there was
- 28:41one that's game and watch things. Yeah, can hang on once. I'll
- 28:45get it down and top of your hang on might be that? Is it
- 28:49like a Bartzilla one or something? Put the headphones back on one moment.
- 28:52It's this thing here. So you guys are at home can't see this obviously
- 28:56unless you're watching this somehow. But do you see that? Wow? Yeah,
- 29:00we can turn it on and everything. I'm not sure which yeah,
- 29:03but yeah, it's I finished the game in about three seconds. It's made
- 29:07by I have no idea, but yeah, and it's Tigers Tiger Electronics.
- 29:12One Tiger Electronics, that's what they're called. Oh yeah, yeah, there
- 29:15was a few early nineties. That one looks probably late nineties because the game
- 29:25can you how can you tell by looking at something? Because I know,
- 29:30what, when do they stop doing the like the pink and green? Yeah,
- 29:33so I think that was probably ninety one or two, and then they
- 29:37switched to just green, like a green base for a lot of stuff,
- 29:44um for a few years, and then they went like a route about two
- 29:47thousands or must be earlier because that thing there they went to like a red
- 29:51and yellow, red, yellow blue scheme. Yeah, it was red and
- 29:55blue a little bit later because when I were doing those little figurines at coals
- 29:57and stuff, I feel like the boxes were like Lewin red and yellow.
- 30:00Yeah, that's right. That was was that two thousand and seven or eight?
- 30:04So that late was it? Well? Okay, yeah, I was
- 30:07working at the times. It must have been about two thousand and six at
- 30:08least. Yeah, yeah, all right, maybe what's that early? Yeah,
- 30:11I can't remember, but who knows? But um, what a time
- 30:15to be a life. Anyway, where are we up to? What we
- 30:18finished? Guy's Ruby's Cube story? Everyone please finish the ruby It's done,
- 30:26It's done. Um but yeah, so anyways, shit's going down the Rubi's
- 30:29Cube, Marge, you know, she cracks it again, she throws it
- 30:30away, and this is where what happens after I'll be this week at your
- 30:34your favorite moment the Harmonica store. Yes, and then Homer goes out,
- 30:40you know it's look at you really calm it is, and sees the bottle
- 30:42of rama flying in the background, realizes that, um, that it's still
- 30:45happening. They almost just stuck to I remember as the kid this moment here
- 30:48going oh shit, I thought was a guy but no, he gets in
- 30:52margin does her prey and I'll recommend you to all my friends. And then
- 30:56when it gets better, he fell for it and there's no damage at all.
- 31:04Now obviously it's just because of the way they've done that shot from But
- 31:07when I was a kid, I always thought that the house, their roof
- 31:11had come down like a few feet, because it's actually covering half the windows.
- 31:15But what it is. It's just the overhang covering the top of the
- 31:18top half of the windows. But when I get always thought their house had
- 31:19like shrunk. But then we cut to Flanders and it's all gone deadly on.
- 31:26So we come back from commercial and Maud she comes out from the rubble.
- 31:30She thought she was on her way to the eternal, eternal bliss of
- 31:33paradise or whatever, and pour rods in a tree. He's got a headache.
- 31:36I said that quite a lot. When I say at a headache,
- 31:38I say it just like like rod there, And Flanders says, you know,
- 31:41I'm just grateful that we're all still alive. I'm gonna gets your stuff
- 31:45back, And then they talk about how Ned doesn't have insurance. I love
- 31:49the reasoning the former death. I guess another one as a kid that I
- 31:56didn't really understand that now as an adult you really like, ah, do
- 32:00I need that? I probably should, Yeah, But then the tombstones are
- 32:05still there. Well calls if you need anything. And when out the church
- 32:07and did you see the sign at the front. Oh, God welcomes his
- 32:09victim, God welcomes his systems. And we get the I'm stupid shirt and
- 32:15what I liked about this moment here is normally Flanders would be bothered by this,
- 32:19but he's so beaten down and tired it doesn't even have the strength to
- 32:22sort of say no, don't say that, don't be so silly kind of
- 32:23thing with the I'm so stupid shirts. The other great thing is that I
- 32:28think it's Todd who's wearing the butthole so they can't show, but has got
- 32:32to be. But it's for low'd what's better? The answer is not much,
- 32:42But there's nothing. There's nothing worse than seeing your dad or the main
- 32:47authority figure in life just beaten. Yeah, like crying, I'm okay with
- 32:53you, being angry with you, be angry with least you know, but
- 32:58the life's just sort of kicked the shit out, saying way to go,
- 33:00oh no no, Because when you're a child, usually like one of your
- 33:05parents is like the strongest person in your life in most cases, so when
- 33:07you see them giving up, it's just like shit, well they can't handle
- 33:12what's going on. The handle was going on, so he more sort of
- 33:15brings up the sorry, brings up the left toorrium and emmy unfortunate at the
- 33:19news report, I mean fortunately for us because it's so funny. But unfortunately
- 33:22for Ned, there's a right going on down here at Springfield Mall. A
- 33:25storm add old crowd appears to have turned its rage on the left torrium.
- 33:31Surprisingly, people are grabbing things with both hands, suggesting it's not just South
- 33:36Paws and its rampaging mob. Oh my god, try looking at the back.
- 33:40Meantime, Springfield bars will be happy to hear that the Bowl Arama is
- 33:44back in business and it's new location. Teetering over the Carter Dickson Tunnel.
- 33:52Graver and love Joy, what's all it's happened us today? Yeah? I
- 33:58kind of feel like job well or aren't you being a tad melodramatic? Ned?
- 34:04Also, I believe job was right handed. But Reverend, I need
- 34:07to know is God punishing me? Who short answer yes with an f long
- 34:14answer no with a butt if you need additional solos. By the way,
- 34:19I've got a copy of something or other bi oric link lutter in my office.
- 34:22We're still at that point here where love Joy, I don't don't.
- 34:27I don't think he's that much older than Flanders, which we learned in like
- 34:30the um to Listen Lady episode, But like he he still speaks to love
- 34:35Joy like he's an authoritarian, like reverend like like he still talks to him
- 34:37like he's a leader, his boss, if that makes any sense. You
- 34:40know, he still sees me as like a higher figure than than he.
- 34:45He's the middle manager between the big man. That's true. Yeah, Yeah,
- 34:47he's just looking for some comfort though in Reverend love Joy. And he's
- 34:52even reverend, he's not very unhelpful. You know, you're being over dramatic.
- 34:54Look, his house is gone. Yeah, this is it's the clasic
- 35:00you had one job. Yeah, it's like provide a bit of you know,
- 35:05souls flock there, reverend. And I guess this is is this before
- 35:07the Mister Sparkle episode. That's the Listening Lady, the episode I was talking
- 35:13about. Yeah, yeah, so that's where he's sort of you learn why
- 35:15he's so given up non scaring. But yeah, but is that I can't
- 35:20remember if that was before after this one. I'm pretty sure that was after
- 35:22this one other. Look shall we so that what was the episode called It's
- 35:25um marge in Marjorie Trust in Marjorie Trust that's it. I knew it was
- 35:30in there somewhere. Yeah, And that was the twenty second episode of the
- 35:32eighth season, So that was after this earlier in the ad season. Yeah,
- 35:36but it is. You know, you are right though, I think
- 35:37it was important that we eventually did learn why Reverend just doesn't seem to give
- 35:40a shit about wanting to help his flock as God put them. But but
- 35:45another aspect of this episode that we didn't really touch on yet was I just
- 35:49love how Flanders this is looking for an answer from God, like why me?
- 35:52Like what did I do? Like I've done everything you wanted me to
- 35:55do and it still wasn't good enough, Like what what have I possibly done
- 35:59wrong? And I thought that they could have taken this episode in a direction
- 36:02of him not losing his faith, but really questioning his faith. But I
- 36:06thought they might have made the episode a little bit too dark, maybe a
- 36:08little bit too controversial as well. I don't know what do you think?
- 36:12Yeah, it does seem like it could almost be its own episode, and
- 36:16then like the mental breakdown stuff could almost be a separate one. Yeah,
- 36:22could they try to take tackle that in the episode where Moore dies the last
- 36:25moment or so, it's just like, yeah, I'm going to church,
- 36:28and then they quickly just wrap that up. Yeah, but that's an episode
- 36:31that needs it needs more depth to it than what they did in that episode.
- 36:34For sure. I love the direction there as well, just the pull
- 36:37away. Yeah, they pull up a hund of a percent. I'm not
- 36:38a religious person, but like that moment still gets here. Oh you're still
- 36:43you're still like really feel for him, man. Yeah, that's the difference
- 36:46between as I was saying, Season seventeen Simpsons and this one is like every
- 36:50characters feel so raw and real. Where there, you don't get this kind
- 36:54of passion and meaning in the characters anymore. And they pull off a really
- 36:59neat, honesting act of taking what these characters take seriously seriously while also poking
- 37:06fun out. It's hard to it's hard to do that, but they actually
- 37:07do it really well here. I mean, I don't think you ever doubt
- 37:10Ned's faith, even while Ned is doubting his faith, if you know what
- 37:13I mean. Yeah, while they also sort of poke a little bit of
- 37:17fun at it, mainly through home or poking fun at Ned. But yeah,
- 37:21I think it's such a such really clever writing and really clever storytelling.
- 37:24So the very next day, Marge, she says, you've gotta come check
- 37:28out this what's happened. It's it's a miracle what the rubble burned down?
- 37:30And it turns out they've rebuilt the house. And I'm like, you guys
- 37:34built the house very quickly overnight. That's for shadowing what I liked about those.
- 37:43It brings up the best of Springfield. You know. It's just there
- 37:46are a town that you know, they have their odds of each other,
- 37:49but at the core, they're one big family. And that's what I liked
- 37:52about this moment here. But it also reveals that there is full of lazy,
- 38:00inadequate people. Yeah, there's a good, good balance there, but
- 38:01they love a good bandwagon and jumping on it, you know, like the
- 38:05radio. But it's an old fashioned hold again. So then they had all
- 38:09their different tools, a smet mixer full of hope and some cement, and
- 38:14you know, if you need a favor for the happiest man in Springfield,
- 38:16this guy never shows up again. I was does feel like that could have
- 38:22been a recurring character. I guess he's only a one note joke, but
- 38:24so are a lot of them. But I think it probably would have gotten
- 38:29old after a while, But it definitely could have had a few more appearances.
- 38:31I think this guy was great. He's got one and done. I
- 38:36think just one and done as perfect land As then walks into the door.
- 38:38The door doesn't open up properly. There's a loose nail. He one out
- 38:40of twenty five eight toilet in the kitchen because Wigan was too late to take
- 38:46it up the stairs, a low bearing post of crusty in the kid's rooms.
- 38:51Then we got a room full of electricity, but there's too much litricity,
- 38:53so we might want to wear a hat. And then classic Moe,
- 38:58we ran out of floorboats. We painted the dot pretty claim and then the
- 39:05whole streaks much like really want from the chocolate factory. But Barney still somehow
- 39:07in the master bedroom, Oh my nose. He slams the door and Homer
- 39:12leans on the door. You know the house that love built or whatever,
- 39:15and it all just love falls down. What do you think of the house
- 39:16that love built and it all just falls down? Shoot, It's like it's
- 39:21almost like you kind of expected it. He's like, oh shit, And
- 39:23planned is a little moment there were he's trying to clean his glasses and they're
- 39:28cracking. It's like that's what makes him crack? Yeah, it's like,
- 39:30oh that sound is him cracking as well. I was like, he's had
- 39:32enough, so he absolutely lose it. And you can't do this rant justice.
- 39:37It's just every single line is an absolute banger. It's so good,
- 39:40Mad, we like well and everyone here tried their best. Well, my
- 39:45family and I can't lave in good intentions. Marge. Oh, your family
- 39:49has had a control, but we can't blame you because you have good intentions.
- 39:54Hey, back off, Okay, dude, I wouldn't want you to
- 39:59have cow man. Here's the catch freeze. You better learn for your adult
- 40:02years. Hey, buddy, got a quarter. I am shocked and appalled,
- 40:08mister Flanders with all due respect, but I didn't do anything. Do
- 40:14I hear the sound a butting in? It's gotta be a little Lisa Simpson
- 40:16Springfield's answered. Do I question? Now? I've asked? What do we
- 40:21have here? The long flammy arm in the law? The last case you
- 40:24got to the bottom of. What was that case? I'm malamars malamars ah,
- 40:29that's going in the act. Oh yeah, the clown the only one
- 40:32of you with phones who doesn't make me laugh, And it's for you.
- 40:37I don't know you, but I'm sure you're a jerk. Hey, I've
- 40:38only been here a few minutes. What's going on? You ugly? Hate
- 40:43Field man? Hey, Hey, I may be ugly in hate Field,
- 40:45but i'm What was the third thing you said, Harmer, you are the
- 40:53worst human being I have ever met? He I got a pretty easy oh
- 41:00man, you could just imagine. It's almost fourth wall breaking in a way
- 41:04where he's like pointing out all the flaws of these characters, obviously and just
- 41:08that. Yeah, that must have had so much fun in the writer's room
- 41:14coming up with what you can make fun of all of these regular characters.
- 41:17My favorite one wasn't even like the punchline. It was just his disdain of
- 41:22the clown. Yeah, the clown. I think my favorite is gonna be
- 41:30good intended the hands going, I don't know, mos is pretty good.
- 41:37Yeah, may be ugly and hate Field. But what was that third thing
- 41:42he said? I won't have been here Field minutes. What's going on then?
- 41:45But that's that's the one that I've got in the in the cell.
- 41:51So the cell, first one of the cells is it's like Flanners doing this
- 41:57with Lisa in the background. Is she interrupting. That is he's like,
- 42:00yeah, and the other cell is like Flanders storming past Mo after that,
- 42:07and the storyboard is from the crusty scene over to where he turns around to
- 42:15Lenny and he's like, and ask for you. I don't know you,
- 42:17but I'm sure you're a jef. I just had to get that on the
- 42:22storyboard, Homers, And then I love the directing and just the animation.
- 42:29When Flanders approaches Homer, he just has that sense of nervousness like, oh
- 42:32shit, what have I got coming? And just the worst human being I've
- 42:37ever met? What God? I feasy? I was okay, I got
- 42:39that, And he leaves and checks himself into Calmwood Mental Hospital. And what
- 42:44was the song he was singing there? It sounds like the Yeah, it's
- 42:49like that tropical yea yeah. But they come out from commercial now and he's
- 42:58committed himself. He wants to go and kicking the kicking and screaming please.
- 43:02Is anyone ever curious about what a padded cell feels like? It? Is
- 43:07it the floor as well? And I just guess it would have to be,
- 43:08would I think it must be? It's I get the feeling, it's
- 43:12been like a bouncy castles. Bouncy castle, yeah, just not as bouncy
- 43:16though a lot firmer I think, yeah, yeah, but imagine, just
- 43:21imagine it was bouncy. I want I'd check myself in all the time.
- 43:25I think. I've been to like tours of old asylums and they're just they're
- 43:30depressingly just concrete. It's real, real shame. I don't know if the
- 43:34padded thing was ever real or just a cartoon invention, but the dream the
- 43:38nursing comes along as you see Flan has written the paper with his feet and
- 43:42she calls doctor Foster and no one. I was a kid, I used
- 43:45to always, for some reason, used to think he was saying, may
- 43:46God have mercy on a song? Because the way he says kind of mercy
- 43:50on us all it sounds like if you listen to it, it's like me,
- 43:52God a mercy on a song. I'm like, what the hell does
- 43:54that mean? For us? So long when I was the kid, I
- 43:57was like, I don't get this. What's going on? The shoes are
- 44:00in the den and then he goes to see Ned and he obviously another strait
- 44:05jacket to give him warm and Flann as he thinks, you know, oh,
- 44:07I was a good little boy. He's completely just you know, hidden
- 44:09all the memories. He's put it pushed into the back of his mind that
- 44:12he was actually a little shit head. So he just convenently has the footage.
- 44:15They're ready to go. I brought to you by Swanson's Angry Man's Dinners.
- 44:17And yeah, that's seeing the prune Tracy. It's so awesome, Queene,
- 44:25that prune face, no pun face. Take that, Tracy. No,
- 44:30I'm prune Tracy. Take that. Stop it it, stop it.
- 44:37I can't believe I was such a terror. Well, neither could your parents.
- 44:42That's why they brought you to me. Well, I'm afraid young Ned
- 44:46is unusually aggressive, but I can't seem to find a cause for it.
- 44:51Hey, hey, get down from that bookshelf. Please, most of those
- 44:53books haven't been discredited yet. Would you please tell your son to stop?
- 44:58We get and do it me. And that's discipline. That's like telling Jene
- 45:01group but not to go boom boom boom boom boom boom. Lack of discipline.
- 45:10I'm beginning to see the problem. We don't believe in rules, like
- 45:15we gave them up when we started living like freaky beatnoks. You don't believe
- 45:20in rules yet you want to control Ned's anger. Yeah, you've got to
- 45:23help us, Doc. We've tried nothing, and we're all out of ideas.
- 45:29I've tried nothing in them, all out of ideas. Is a shot
- 45:31that can mean that gets use all the time. Absolutely, but yea yeah,
- 45:36I mean just the slight variation of the Harry puts on the Flanders voice
- 45:38to do that, to do that, yeah, when we were freaky beat
- 45:46um. But then they try the spankological protocol which goes to eight months.
- 45:51Just I love the various changes in the seasons. Santa Claus volleyball, just
- 45:57avoid the window. But then it works two and now he's he represses,
- 46:01he can't be angry at all, repressed. Everything he strings nonsensical jabbering.
- 46:06And then which also explains the way why he talks the way he does these
- 46:08slanderisms, and you know he's there any particular person that can make you this
- 46:14angry. Cut to Homer on the phone, Landers, I don't know any
- 46:16need Flanders stop. Oh yeah him, they arrive and just the putting the
- 46:22same stickers on that is just classic simself. But it's a callback to when
- 46:28Homer gets Um released from the mental hospital in isn't it the Stamp? So
- 46:32he gets a stamp on his hand, his hand, yes, yes,
- 46:36right, yeah, Well that episode doesn't exist anymore, so I don't know
- 46:38what we're talking about. Um and one patience a cannibal. As we're touching
- 46:43on earlier. Now, there's three people that we know in these cells.
- 46:46Do you know any of them? Guys? Well, because it's but also
- 46:54the long haired chap is John Schwartz was indeed, yeah, and the first
- 46:58woman was Mike. Well that you say. That was miss Bots. The
- 47:01Babysitter Bandit, which was supposed to be the very first episode of the Simpsons,
- 47:06but the animation was so terrible they pushed it back to the season finale.
- 47:08Miss Bots, Yeah, the Babysitter Bandit. But yeah, they need
- 47:13to find someone so irritating that he can't suppress his rage. He says to
- 47:15can you be that man? Bubble gum on the face, just get into
- 47:19booth and home. It starts running at all the cards. I just don't
- 47:22want to get to the last one. I engage an intercourse with your spousal
- 47:24significant other. Now that's psychiatry. That whole scene again is another like line
- 47:31for line corker. Oh just so good, thanks for dropping back maximum hostility
- 47:38factor. I engaged an intercourse with your suppose or a significant other. No,
- 47:45that's psychiatry. H h oh, very funny, wise guy, Oh
- 47:52that's you just can't in solve this guy. You call him a moro,
- 47:55run and he just sits there gritting mora. Hi, neighbor, you know
- 48:00what your problem is, Flanders. You're afraid to be human? No,
- 48:04no, why would I be afraid of that? Because humans are obnoxious.
- 48:07Sometimes humans hate things, well, maybe a few of them do. Back
- 48:12East, I can't find what home is saying. Did you write that?
- 48:15Um? Did you like it? Come on on, Flanders, there's gonna
- 48:19be something you hate. What about mosquito bites? Mmmmm sure are fun to
- 48:22scratch? M satisfying. What about your fluorescent lights? O? They hum
- 48:30like angels. You're never lonely if you got a fluorescent light, see you
- 48:36like everything? No, that's not true. I don't like the service at
- 48:40the post office. You know, it's all rush, rush, get you
- 48:44in, get you out. Then they've got those machines in the lobby.
- 48:47They're even faster no help there. You might even say I hate the post
- 48:52office that and my parents. Has he beatnings? Well, I'm is trying
- 48:59to just up with stuff that literally everybody hates, Like, yeah, I'm
- 49:02not a bad misscater, but hm, sound as back give up. This
- 49:13guy can't. But yeah, he has a breakthrough, he's cured. Everyone's
- 49:16ready to greet him as they leave. And there's three signs here besides the
- 49:21welcome back. One says we love Flanders, one says flandy as dandy,
- 49:24and then there's a free John schwatz Bolder, the very last one there,
- 49:29which when you're watching his back on TV back in the day, you would
- 49:31never have seen it. It's right at the last second. You have to
- 49:34really freeze frame it. But yeah, it's there. I noticed it's also
- 49:37on the on the wiki page as well. I thought I was being very
- 49:38clever trying to find that one that realizes on the wiki page. But then
- 49:43he says, you know, if you if you annoy me, a gonna
- 49:45really hear about it, and if you tip me off, I'll run you
- 49:46down with my car, And then we get the Flanders You're so crazy at
- 49:51the end of the episode. So yeah, it's a it's amazing. We've
- 49:52had some Flanders episodes up to this point, but this just seems like the
- 49:57Flanders episode. But everyone thinks of White episodes were about Flanders, this is
- 50:00the one you go to, I think, Yeah, even more so than
- 50:04like the one where they go camping. That one seems like a pretty obviously
- 50:07Flander's heavy episode. Yeah, this one's got a lot more yeah, character
- 50:12depth to it. Yeah, Well, we don't learn why he is the
- 50:15way he Isn't that one, you know, he just homer pisces him off
- 50:17to the point where like even the nicest guy in Springfield has to sort of
- 50:21vent. But we don't learn why he is the way he is. And
- 50:22that's what this episode. This episode is the real exploration of the head Flanders
- 50:25character, and they just did it so well. Yeah, I think some
- 50:30of it ends up being undercut a bit by like later episodes, like you
- 50:34know, the Vegas episode where they reveal that he's sixty and then all of
- 50:37a sudden, Yeah, I don't know if you really call it cannon or
- 50:40if it's all it's all kind of flexible, but yeah, if he's sixty,
- 50:45then how old is doctor Foster or a true. You know, it's
- 50:49kind of messes with it a bit, but I would say more than a
- 50:52bit. Yeah, absolutely, that's warping space. And yeah, something that
- 50:59was croius about just that that closing line neared you so crazy. I'm wondering
- 51:02if it's a catchphrase belonging to w anybody. Martin Lawrence had a stand up
- 51:08specially in nineteen ninety four called you so Crazy, and I wonder if that
- 51:12was kind of his catchphrase on the eponymous sitcom Martin Um, you know,
- 51:17also name checked on the show Plenty of Dames, because you know it was
- 51:21Martin was feeling kind of race. I've never heard of that sit on before.
- 51:24Yeah, I didn't know he had one. Maybe I did not know.
- 51:28Think remember the show called the Hugelys Yeah, d l H. Yeah,
- 51:31like that show is just completely guying. Ever, like that was like
- 51:35like late nineties, there was like all these sitcoms that just like we're pretty
- 51:37big at the time, but they've just gone. If it's vanished. Damer
- 51:40and Gregg's another one like Dammer and Gregg's is gone. Two guys ago at
- 51:45a pizza place, Remember that one Ryan Reynolds that was gone. I feel
- 51:49bad for the other guy like Ryan Reynolds, most rich and famous person in
- 51:55the world, and this guy won't say he's living in a cardboard box.
- 52:01But still I think it was on one of those sort of like seasie type
- 52:05shows. For a while. I would hope, I should hope, So
- 52:07I hope. And what was the girl's name in the show, But she
- 52:10went on to become a Sharon Sharon, she went on to play she was
- 52:14in Monk. I think it was was a Monk, I think so,
- 52:15yeah, yeah, yeah, so she went on to do something as well.
- 52:19But yeah, somebody late ninety sitcom. But the hugely is just I'm
- 52:21just like, that was a show I haven't thought of like fifteen years.
- 52:23That just came to my head. And he said, Martin, and yes,
- 52:25it was another one. Yeah. They're always on Fox Day in between
- 52:30like Simpsons and King of the Hill, and they went for like eight seasons.
- 52:35Yeah. Now there's something. There's one called Rules of Engagement. Yeah,
- 52:38I know the one David Spade might have Spade, wasn't it, Yeah,
- 52:42and had Putty from from Sinfowder. Yeah, yeah, I remember it
- 52:46existed, but I couldn't. I think I might have watched about eight minutes
- 52:51total. But like you watched the commercials now like Channel ten commercial from ninety
- 52:53yet you're like, ah, simpler time. I never watched the show,
- 53:00but we did do a show just on like sitcoms that just have vanished.
- 53:02I'm going to be a fun thing to do. But yes, that has
- 53:04been our discussion here of hurricane. Now do you think you've slept in that
- 53:07one, Michael, to discuss But now we are here to discuss you,
- 53:09sir. So you are on TikTok. TikTok's a big one, right,
- 53:14that's where most of your views come from. TikTok. Yeah, that's the
- 53:16one that I feel like I'm too old for that, so I kind of
- 53:21I was a bit anxious about trying it out. But it's the one that's
- 53:23really blown up. Yeah, Simmons, one word, it's you're using the
- 53:29terms blown up. Michael. I don't think you're too old for TikTok.
- 53:35I've learned it, picked it up from your kids. So on there,
- 53:38it's like fifty six thousand. Facebook's like dead in the water. I know
- 53:44you guys have a pretty like face in people are still using Facebook. So
- 53:49we're nearly on ten hundred thousand followers now, but we're going, okay,
- 53:51everyone, I want to leave. You know what it is too, It's
- 53:54saying like Twitter as well. It's like people are saying I wouldn't do Facebook
- 53:58anymore. But of all the things, Facebook just seems to be the constant
- 54:00that just keeps chugging along. It's like, yeah, people say that it
- 54:04used anymore, but when we put something out there and fucking goes off,
- 54:06So people must still be using Facebook now. I think if you're starting from
- 54:10now, like it's TikTok and Instagram, possible to get a Facebook. Yeah,
- 54:16like the ball rolling there. Instagram's not too bad, but I've only
- 54:20got Yeah. Twitter was the second most useful one until recently when yeah,
- 54:27Elon Musk is kind of tanked the whole platform. So your Twitter not going
- 54:31any good anymore because as was going really well and then it sort of just
- 54:35like stagnated. Yeah, it's a bit that way. I think I've topped
- 54:38out at about four thousand followers on there, and it grew really fast and
- 54:43then slowed down. Yeah. Um, but we need to st or TikTok
- 54:47doing it just because everyone else is doing it. We need to get on
- 54:50that bandwagon. But I think like Twitter was really good originally for getting in
- 54:55front of the people from the show. So yeah, I ended up having
- 55:00a bunch of writers like Josh Weinsteine follows me on there, and some of
- 55:07the animators locally probably follows you, I think so. Actually, yeah,
- 55:12Villa and Josh are like the two they see about the two ones that are
- 55:14genuine fans and still keep up the date with the fandom. Yeah, yeah,
- 55:17that's it. And then I think Instagram a lot of the muse as
- 55:22well. I think Maggie Graining, So Matt Greening's sister followed me on Instagram
- 55:27that day. I was like, whoa, I know that name. To
- 55:30play it cool, So on your TikTok, we'll just we'll focus on the
- 55:34TikTok. Then basically it's just you show videos of your collection. But let's
- 55:37talk about your collection. So, I know I've read somewhere that you started
- 55:38collecting in high school. That's where it's sort of spawned from. But what
- 55:43like your earliest memories of Simpson's merch, Like, what are the ones that
- 55:45you had when you were a kid that you might have anymore? But what
- 55:47sort of is your best memories of Simpson's collection Simpson Collectibles as a kid,
- 55:52I don't remember like a lot of the very early figures and stuff. For
- 55:55me, it was the tazos and things like that. Yeah, I was
- 55:58going to say that was the bit. I think that might have been the
- 56:00birth of the collecting bog footy cards and tarzos. That's where it started for
- 56:05me collecting for sure. Yeah, like just I don't know. There was
- 56:07so much fun with that. And you get a bag of chips which Show
- 56:10and he loved, and then you have like this little prize inside and then
- 56:14it was swapping those and putting them all in the in the album and became
- 56:17like currency in the school. Yeah I didn't they Yeah, I forgot my
- 56:22lunch. I was sorry. I got six Simpsons tarsos in my bag.
- 56:22I swap for a sandwich. And they always had games that you could play
- 56:28with them. But yeah, I remember trying to, like you tried to
- 56:32with like the Marbles type games. They just never really had the slam as
- 56:36we got to slam them on the top of the tarzos and things like.
- 56:37Yeah. Yeah, I had for members of the Space Jam ones and my
- 56:42son loved Space Jam and there was a space The game for Spaceham was the
- 56:45best tarzo game. So basically what it was was like a fold out basketball
- 56:49court which came with a little net and it gave you little stands with the
- 56:52characters from the movie on it. You put your tars on top, and
- 56:53you've got to flick the tarzo off and go through the basketball and then that's
- 56:57how you get your points. So like further the further back you were,
- 56:59the more points yet for for flicking it in. So that like that's a
- 57:01genuine game that was actually pretty fun. But the other time it was just
- 57:04like stake up some tarzos and slam it on top and whatever one's land on
- 57:07the right side up whoever does the slam I guess to keep those ones.
- 57:09And I'm like, I'm not sure I'm reading to give away my tarsos like
- 57:13this, but um but yeah, so yeah, so tarzos for you that
- 57:16that was definitely a big thing. But yeah, we didn't really have many
- 57:19action figures. The earliest ones for me, I remember that the tarzos.
- 57:21I remember the KFC must have had a deal with the Simpsons because they had
- 57:24the cups. Those cups had on the toppers that they're a big one these
- 57:29ones up there where are Yeah, that's the ones top of the studio as
- 57:31well. Yeah, I like right, that look great? Yeah, um
- 57:35yeah. And they had a lot of um yeah, like sets, little
- 57:38figures and stuff. They had a couple of beach themed ones. Yeah,
- 57:40that was that Burger king hung Jacks that's yeah, because Hungry Jacks up.
- 57:45Hungry Jacks had some cool shit as well. But so what was the what
- 57:47was the thing that started the collection? Then the high school one? What
- 57:50was the big one? I mean, I can't even remember. I think
- 57:52it might have been by that time the Tarzo pickers rolled around, Yeah,
- 57:58which were like the ones with the l Crew back. I recomemberies of that
- 58:00because I clecton them with my nan, who's now no longer with us,
- 58:02but like I used to go to my NaN's after school and she's like,
- 58:05oh, I've got a few new Simpsons things for you. I'm like,
- 58:09yeah, go on, Marlene. I don't know whether those things kind of
- 58:14things would work anymore. I don't think they're allowed to because it's promoting eating
- 58:16fast food. But surely if you drop fucking tazas or something in some sort
- 58:21of like food like potato chips, or something like even if it's healthy,
- 58:24people are going to be all over that. I reckon. I reckon,
- 58:25like things like trading cards and that I think they're going to make it come
- 58:29back eventually. Like I've got the whole wall of trading cards here. People
- 58:31say, are the worth nothing? I'm like, I reckon there will be
- 58:35a resurgence and trading cards. Oh yeah, some of them are worth ridiculous
- 58:37amounts. There's a few super rare sets that I'm missing here. There was
- 58:43like especially the ones that you have to send away for You get like a
- 58:45redemption card in your packets and you have to send that away. Those things
- 58:50are worth like literally thousands of dollars because you can't send away anymore. Yeah.
- 58:53Yeah, so you have to just hope that. Yeah, those people
- 58:57who went to that effort. If you went to that effort, then you're
- 59:00going to hang onto it. You're not going to just throw it. Yeah.
- 59:01Yeah, Michael, is there some kind of holy grail item that you've
- 59:07got your eyes on or heard about and like, I've got to I've got
- 59:10to have it. There are there's two that highly sought after, and I
- 59:15think there's only a couple of them in the world at all. So one
- 59:20of them is it's called the Save Blinky Bart. So it's a little regular
- 59:24old Mattel Bart figure. Again, you had to send away for it,
- 59:28you had to buy. Um he was only like, yeah, like five
- 59:32centimeters tall, like a fairly small one, like a pop final here,
- 59:37probably smaller than that even, um, kind of like the Springfield figures.
- 59:42These ones. Yeah, so the Bart size of that, yeah, i'd
- 59:45say. And yeah, they had the whole family and like Nelson and stuff,
- 59:51originally five centimeters are five inches centimeters. That is small. That's tiny.
- 59:57Yeah, they're the ones on the white couch. Okay, we've got
- 1:00:00mini ones like five cinemas sitting all sitting on a white couch. It's really
- 1:00:04bizarre. But you continue, Yeah, those tiny ones. Yeah I do
- 1:00:06know which ones you mean. Yeah, yeah, um no, so it's
- 1:00:08bigger than that one. But yeah, they you had to buy all of
- 1:00:14the family and then clip off the barcodes and send those away, and you
- 1:00:19would get this guy. And rumor has it there's only like three known in
- 1:00:23the world. Um, this Mexican collector that I mate with, Alex Ortega,
- 1:00:29he's got one, yeah, I think, yeah, yeah, that's
- 1:00:32him. He's great, and there's another guy in the UK who apparently has
- 1:00:36one, and that's I don't know where any of the others are. So
- 1:00:39I'm always hoping against hope that one day you just walk into a garage sale
- 1:00:45and find this thing sitting there for five bucks and no one knows what it
- 1:00:49is. I can just get Alex on the show and we'll tell you when
- 1:00:52he's going to be on the show. You fly to Mexico and whilst he's
- 1:00:54just talking to us, you're just going down and you've got to tell you
- 1:01:01I'm going to leave, Yeah, leave a card courtesy of like the cat
- 1:01:07burglay. But is there a community collector sort of looking at for one another.
- 1:01:13It's like, you know, yeah, I came across this, I've
- 1:01:15already got it, or I've got something similar. It's not what I need
- 1:01:17or not what I want, but I know someone So in the UK or
- 1:01:22someone so in Poland wants. Yeah. Well that's the great thing. I've
- 1:01:28Yeah, through all the social media stuff, I've gotten into that community.
- 1:01:30So you've got yeah Alex in Mexico, You've got there's a couple of guys
- 1:01:35in the US in the UK and you kind of just um, yeah,
- 1:01:40you help each other out because some of the stuff. We've got a lot
- 1:01:43of stuff through Zin lately, which is Australia exclusive and amazing. They've licensed
- 1:01:47some cool shit lately. Yeah. So I used to I used to work
- 1:01:52at pop Culture and I sort of have to get that off the ground.
- 1:01:53So I'm basically the reason we had the stone cut of stones made now those
- 1:01:58stones all right, Like that was on me. Oh that's cool. Yeah,
- 1:02:01I've got the ring. I've got the stone cutters ring, the mill
- 1:02:05Pool stockings, the Christmas stockings. Do you see that. I do have
- 1:02:07that. Yeah. Yeah, the pig cufflinks as well, that was another
- 1:02:13one. Yeah, but they were it was a headache at the time because
- 1:02:15um, Disney didn't own them yet. I don't think there was Maybe it
- 1:02:20was during the transition, I'm too sure, but they were really tight on
- 1:02:22what you could and couldn't make, couldn't use certain characters. There was a
- 1:02:25certain like guideline or things you could have the characters say on the merch well,
- 1:02:30so basically they weren't really willing to do things like the stone Cutter's ring
- 1:02:35and the steins like that's off brandt. We want just the main family stuff
- 1:02:38and we're like, now people are gonna like this. So it was like
- 1:02:40pulling teeth out, but we eventually got those through. But I feel like
- 1:02:44since Disney have taken over, Disney's like and we've bought this thing that makes
- 1:02:46the money. You go make some ship and we'll we'll make some money.
- 1:02:51So now you see some like I think the last like two years have been
- 1:02:53like peak Simpsons merch for cool, unique Simpsons items in my opinion. Yeah,
- 1:02:58well they've like Super seven is another company that's sacking a lot of really
- 1:03:01cool stuff. They had like a series of McBain figures and it's like McBain
- 1:03:07Mendoza and Scoe the guy who gets like these full of bullet holes. They
- 1:03:12had a couple of Troy McClure one. Yeah, it's so good. And
- 1:03:16the Ultimates figures which they've just released, Um that's like Poucie. It's got
- 1:03:22robot itchy and scratchy and they're massive. They look so cool. Yeah,
- 1:03:25I love the I think the Kinge and Cotis ones are coming. The Kinge
- 1:03:28and Codis ones are going to be unbelievable. Yeah, Pommies in Australia is
- 1:03:32they take forever to get you. Yeah, that's it, But I would
- 1:03:36definitely I think my head they're so expensive to Super seven, that's the only
- 1:03:38thing. It's like, Oh man, they're like a hundred bucks a pop
- 1:03:40for one toy. Yeah, that's it's It hurts, but I can't stop
- 1:03:46now. Do you feel like, because it's if possible to own every bit
- 1:03:50of Simpsons merch? But do you think you ever will get to a point
- 1:03:52where it's like I'm done or do you think you're just gonna be collective for
- 1:03:55life? I think there might be a point where I'm, yeah, have
- 1:04:00to start spending money on more adult things. Yeah, this might sound silly,
- 1:04:05and I'll be honest. Do you sometimes get bored of just getting simps
- 1:04:10of stuff? Do you feel is at the point now where you feel like
- 1:04:14you almost you have to do it now as opposed to it was a period
- 1:04:19of that maybe ten years ago or so when I was I didn't have the
- 1:04:27room for it, and I like about like uni years and stuff. I
- 1:04:30didn't have anywhere to display it, and I didn't have much money to my
- 1:04:32name, so I was buying stuff and then just putting it in boxes at
- 1:04:36my parents' house and what was like, what's the point? You know?
- 1:04:40Yeah, and then it's it's kind of resurged lately the passion. Well,
- 1:04:45you've got a reason too. Now with your social media. Have you found
- 1:04:48a way to monetize that yet? Uh? Not yet. I've had.
- 1:04:53The closest I've gotten is people have started sending me stuff. I'm gonna say,
- 1:04:57at least contacting stores saying send me the ship so I can promote it
- 1:04:59for it. You should not have you should not have paid for those Mumu
- 1:05:02hoodies, you know what I mean? Yeah, I think Yeah. One
- 1:05:05of my followers actually told me about those in advance. She's like, just
- 1:05:10off the record, I work at Z. Those are coming out in a
- 1:05:13couple of weeks. Who want to get on those? I was like,
- 1:05:14oh, okay, yeah, the biggest people, I'm pretty sure zing they've
- 1:05:16got a blanket rule though, where they won't sponsor any like creators or things
- 1:05:20like that, because they only sponsored the Starlight Foundation, which is a good
- 1:05:24cause. So I think it's just a case of we sponsor these guys.
- 1:05:28If we do one, we have to do them all, so we raise
- 1:05:30money for Starlight. You guys, if you want to buy it, buy
- 1:05:33it if you don't, don't you know what I means. I think that's
- 1:05:35just their blanket rule. Yeah, that makes sense. I look at those
- 1:05:38those Mumu oversized blankets and I was like, it looked pretty awesome. There
- 1:05:43was a lot money. I had someone do a duet with that video within
- 1:05:48about four hours of me posting it, and it was her ordering one instantly,
- 1:05:54So you should get hey zinc see she bought it because of me.
- 1:06:00Michael, we're seeing a lot of Simpsons stuff. Do you collect anything else?
- 1:06:04Not to this extent? Obviously, it's going to be when he's when
- 1:06:08the Simpsons fad finally done. Will come a time when you stop collecting sims
- 1:06:12of stuff? What do you can you collect next? I don't know.
- 1:06:15I think the other thing that like my second passion, and it's starting to
- 1:06:19get a bit of that itch now this year is Jurassic Park stuff, which
- 1:06:26love as well. I've got a four year old and I'm like, it's
- 1:06:28just rekindled my love of dinosaurs. Man Like, he's, yeah, I
- 1:06:30buy all these toys for him, quotation marks. It's just like, I
- 1:06:35don't even have that excuse, but Throme out, I'm like t Rex clearance
- 1:06:40for twenty dollars, yes please. Yeah, And because it's the thirtieth anniversary
- 1:06:45of the original movie this year, doing a huge push of merchandise and every
- 1:06:53it's so tempting. B W has the real Field t Rex, the red
- 1:06:56one, and I saw it the other day because my son really wants it
- 1:06:58because he watches like YouTube videos of people with it, and we're always the
- 1:07:00last ones to get the Jurassic Park stuff for whatever reason. And yeah,
- 1:07:04there's like a hundred bucks and I'm like, I don't think so, man,
- 1:07:09I know eventually this thing will because I usually buy it first for Ali.
- 1:07:13I'm like, so he's got it now, you know, he feels
- 1:07:15cool, blah blah blah. But then like a month later, tw months
- 1:07:16later, they're like, hey, do you want it for half price?
- 1:07:17And I'm like, a man, but what he ended He's had it for
- 1:07:23an extra two months. He was happy, you know what I mean.
- 1:07:24But one hundred bucks for one t Rex toy. He is just a little
- 1:07:26bit too much, in my opinion. But yeah, you did so you
- 1:07:29paid full price for these Super sevens at the Simpsons, Is that right?
- 1:07:31Well? I actually ordered them through pop Culture, so they had I think,
- 1:07:39yeah, there was a bundle if you get the fire I put the
- 1:07:41bundle. I remember, all right, Um, so yeah, it was
- 1:07:45about it was that, which I think ended up being like maybe fifty bucks
- 1:07:49or eighty bucks off. There's still yeah, especially when I ordered multiple waves
- 1:07:57in one or did you really Yeah? That was nearly a nearly a grand
- 1:08:01in one transaction. I did love it is see a Facebook post of a
- 1:08:04pop culture promoting and you're like, where's my pre Odors bitches? Hey,
- 1:08:11I didn't say it like that. It had been Yeah, they were like
- 1:08:16all of a sudden advertising that they were in stock, and I'm like,
- 1:08:18where am I might not hear you. How many Symptons items do you think
- 1:08:23you own right now? Oh? Geez, I don't even like it would
- 1:08:28be like two to three thousand. Do you think it's in thousands or yeah?
- 1:08:31I did a rough count and I thought it might have been about three
- 1:08:34thousand. Wow, So I had someone asked me that once. Um.
- 1:08:39But it's this other thing where apparently collectors get very antsy about specific numbers,
- 1:08:44like if you claim this number, you have to really back it up because
- 1:08:46it's a pretian and everyone is like, this set is one item. You
- 1:08:54can't claim those four figures as as four items. That's one set. That's
- 1:08:58one item, and it shows me alreadies are at for some people. It's
- 1:09:02yeah, it's weird. So I estimate three thousand individual items. I think
- 1:09:09I feel like we can go off forever talking about your collection. We'll have
- 1:09:11to get you on again in the near future to just talk about collection in
- 1:09:14general. I reckon, but we are running out of time now. I'm
- 1:09:15getting the wind up from the lovely wife of mine. But I was been
- 1:09:20absolutely joy to have you on, Michael. And by the way, listeners
- 1:09:23may have seen me promote as getting a bit of a mention in JB Hi
- 1:09:27Fi Stack magazine and Michael was the man behind that article. So I think
- 1:09:29you Michael, that happen. That's all right, no problem. Yeah,
- 1:09:32but it's been absolute joy. As I said, to have you on,
- 1:09:34let's promote your your social media is before we let you go. So yeah,
- 1:09:39so I'm on TikTok, Twitter, Instagram and Facebook at collect Simpsons or
- 1:09:45worst Simpsons collection ever? Um yeah, just google that. Google Google worst
- 1:09:50collection ever. Make sure you put Simpsons there though, because I think it's
- 1:09:53get some really weird shit, you get the Jeffrey Dahmer page already. Michael
- 1:09:59Facts now worry s, thinks a lot
