- 0:22SPEAKER_00: You can make a lot of mistakes as a writer and still be really successful, but one of the mistakes that will kill both your enthusiasm and your success is constantly comparing yourself to others.
- 0:34SPEAKER_00: And let's just be really honest here, it's almost impossible to avoid comparing yourself.
- 0:39SPEAKER_00: It's pretty much baked into our DNA as humans to compare ourselves to other people.
- 0:44SPEAKER_00: And today, social media has made it a lot harder, hasn't it?
- 0:48SPEAKER_00: Whenever you see a friend hit a bestseller list or launch a new book, it's kind of hard not to feel jealous.
- 0:53SPEAKER_00: I mean, even the most successful people, if they're really honest, have to admit that even just every once in a while, they feel a little ping of jealousy when they see somebody else be really successful.
- 1:04SPEAKER_00: It's just part of our DNA.
- 1:06SPEAKER_00: It's how we're wired as humans.
- 1:08SPEAKER_00: We've got to work to overcome it.
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: And the reason is because that negative energy doesn't help us with our goals.
- 1:14SPEAKER_00: Whenever we focus on what we lack, and whenever we're focusing on the negative and what somebody has and we feel like we deserve, that negative mental energy slows us down and makes us feel bad about ourselves.
- 1:25SPEAKER_00: Worse yet, what you see on social media is only a tiny part of other people's lives.
- 1:31SPEAKER_00: Whenever you see a successful book launch, you're only seeing the highlight reel of those people's lives.
- 1:36SPEAKER_00: You don't see the months or even years of hard work that went into the making of that book.
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: So instead of feeling jealous, let other writers' success motivate you.
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: You're not on the same journey as they are.
- 1:49SPEAKER_00: There's no point in comparing yourself because you either end up feeling bad about yourself or you feel prideful because you seem to be doing better than somebody else.
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: And both of those things will take you off course.
- 2:01SPEAKER_00: You can learn from other writers, but don't compare yourself.
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: Comparison kills your energy and your motivation.
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: So instead of comparing yourself with others, compete against your own potential.
- 2:12SPEAKER_00: That is the only true measurement of your success.
- 2:15SPEAKER_00: Here's today's challenge.
- 2:17SPEAKER_00: Is there another writer who makes you jealous, maybe even just a little bit?
- 2:21SPEAKER_00: And if so, what can you learn from that person instead of feeling jealous toward them?
- 2:28SPEAKER_00: Thanks for listening, and I'll see you next time.
