- 0:07Speaker 1: The Season with Peter Schreger as a production of the
- 0:09Speaker 1: NFL in partnership with iHeartRadio. Hey everybody, it is week
- 0:25Speaker 1: nine of the NFL season, and you're listening to the
- 0:28Speaker 1: Season with Peter Schreger. I am Peter Schreger. I'm here
- 0:32Speaker 1: with my producer, Aaron Wong Kaufman. Aaron, how we doing,
- 0:36Speaker 1: my friend? Pretty good man. It's another another good Tuesday morning,
- 0:40Speaker 1: and I'm excited for the show today. Yeah, Tuesday morning.
- 0:44Speaker 1: So last night was Halloween. Real quick, I gotta say
- 0:47Speaker 1: I love Halloween. I don't. I don't remember liking it
- 0:52Speaker 1: in my twenties. I wasn't the guy who now that
- 0:54Speaker 1: I have a kid, like it is the most fun,
- 0:58Speaker 1: pure joy, electric feeling to be out there on the streets,
- 1:02Speaker 1: like in a neighborhood trick or treating, and I think about, like,
- 1:06Speaker 1: you know, how much fun these kids are having, how
- 1:08Speaker 1: pure it all is. And then I think back to
- 1:10Speaker 1: my twenties and early thirties when I was a single
- 1:12Speaker 1: guy having to like get dressed up and be creative
- 1:15Speaker 1: and go and try to you know, have this like
- 1:18Speaker 1: a drunken night or whatever it was. Aaron, where are
- 1:21Speaker 1: you in your life? Cycle right now? And where's your
- 1:22Speaker 1: take on Halloween? You know, I've been all over. I
- 1:25Speaker 1: had a couple great Halloween. So we're all about the
- 1:28Speaker 1: costume and like going out and doing stuff. I think
- 1:31Speaker 1: right before COVID, my girlfriend and I went to a
- 1:34Speaker 1: party that was like two things parties, so you had
- 1:37Speaker 1: to be a combination of two things. So my favorite
- 1:40Speaker 1: costume there was Jonathan Van s and M which I
- 1:43Speaker 1: just thought was like an incredible combo of things. We
- 1:46Speaker 1: went as Interpol jumpers, so like the band Interpol and
- 1:50Speaker 1: the Olympic sport pole jumping. Yeah that is so Brooklyn dude. Yeah, yes,
- 1:58Speaker 1: so some fun things like that. But this year I
- 2:00Speaker 1: didn't dress up at all. This year we went to
- 2:03Speaker 1: the in four Green Park, the Pupkin Dog cost contests.
- 2:10Speaker 1: Pumpkin Dog Contest. Are you ready for four downs? Oh yeah,
- 2:14Speaker 1: let's do it? Man? All right? First down near and
- 2:17Speaker 1: dear to my heart, who's the MVP through the first
- 2:20Speaker 1: eight weeks? Do you think? Okay? So it's like kind
- 2:22Speaker 1: of like the halfway point of the season. I know
- 2:24Speaker 1: they added weeks and then we say there's by way.
- 2:26Speaker 1: I always look at going into week nine as the
- 2:28Speaker 1: halfway point. I think Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes are
- 2:32Speaker 1: the leaders in the MVP conversation, but I wanted to
- 2:35Speaker 1: spend this first down putting out a third name. Gino
- 2:39Speaker 1: smit the service of MVP love. Let me get into
- 2:42Speaker 1: it here. Seattle has won four of their last five games.
- 2:45Speaker 1: Their only loss in that stretch, of course, was to
- 2:49Speaker 1: the Saints in Week five. They have one double digit
- 2:54Speaker 1: margins in the last three games. So they blew out Arizona,
- 2:57Speaker 1: they blew out the Chargers, they beat the Giants this week,
- 3:01Speaker 1: and you look at what Gino is doing. It's like
- 3:03Speaker 1: this great soothing character of all these young players who've
- 3:07Speaker 1: talked about their rookies. You go through Kenneth Walker and
- 3:09Speaker 1: the two offensive tackles who are both rookies, and Kobe
- 3:13Speaker 1: Bryant and terk Woollan and boy Am Offa. These are
- 3:16Speaker 1: all rookies. They shouldn't be this good this soon. And
- 3:19Speaker 1: then you've got this veteran leader in Gino Smith, who
- 3:21Speaker 1: is thirty two years old on the fourth consecutive one
- 3:27Speaker 1: year contract with the Seattle Seahawks. He has signed four
- 3:31Speaker 1: different one year contracts, three of them to be Russ's backup.
- 3:35Speaker 1: One of them to battle with Drew Locke, and what's
- 3:38Speaker 1: he done? He has been like everything Shane Waldron's offense
- 3:41Speaker 1: could ever ask him to be. He's third in QBR
- 3:44Speaker 1: right now. He is right there with Josh Allen and
- 3:48Speaker 1: all the different statics statistics. When it comes to completion percentage,
- 3:51Speaker 1: he's first in completion percentage, and he's tied for fifth
- 3:55Speaker 1: in the NFL with touchdowns, and he's got thirteen. Allen,
- 3:58Speaker 1: of course is there with nineteen. I understand it. Josh
- 4:02Speaker 1: Allen and the bills of this runaway story, and he
- 4:04Speaker 1: is the likely guy. And that's it. But if you're
- 4:06Speaker 1: talking about a dark horse who was the darkest of
- 4:09Speaker 1: all dark horses back in August, I think Gino's in
- 4:12Speaker 1: the conversation Seattle right now. If this playoffs were to begin,
- 4:16Speaker 1: the Seattle Seahawks would be the three seat in the NFC.
- 4:19Speaker 1: The Seattle Seahawks with no Russell Wilson, with no Bobby Wagner.
- 4:24Speaker 1: They're five and three in their next five games. Downtrodden
- 4:27Speaker 1: Cardinals team, downtrouted Buccaneers team in Munich. You think the
- 4:32Speaker 1: last thing the Bucks want to do right now is
- 4:34Speaker 1: get on a plane and go to Germany and play football,
- 4:36Speaker 1: Like I cannot imagine a place that Brady and those
- 4:38Speaker 1: guys want to go less than that, have to go
- 4:40Speaker 1: internationally and not just be in their beds and like
- 4:43Speaker 1: soak on these and like their wounds, whatever it is.
- 4:46Speaker 1: Then they got the Raiders who might have thrown the
- 4:48Speaker 1: towel in, and then of course they've got the NFC
- 4:50Speaker 1: West opponents that are coming up after that. But like
- 4:53Speaker 1: I look at this team, the Seahawks team, I don't
- 4:56Speaker 1: see them getting any worse. I don't see them fading.
- 4:59Speaker 1: And when you're telling me the next five games are
- 5:01Speaker 1: Arizona Tampa, Raiders at RAMS and then the Carolina Panthers,
- 5:04Speaker 1: we could be talking about a team that it is
- 5:06Speaker 1: like fighting for that one or two seed in the
- 5:08Speaker 1: NFC if they're doing that. Gino Smith thirty two year
- 5:12Speaker 1: old Gino Smith on a one year contract where three
- 5:15Speaker 1: million dollars is in the MVP conversation. All right, second down?
- 5:20Speaker 1: Did two approve anything to you on Sunday? Or was
- 5:23Speaker 1: that just a bad Lions defense? Well, Aubrey Pleasant, who's
- 5:26Speaker 1: a friend of mine, was shown the door. He was
- 5:28Speaker 1: defensive backs coach in Detroit and their defense has been putrid.
- 5:32Speaker 1: Aubrey will bounce back and he'll find a gig. He's
- 5:34Speaker 1: one of the good young coaches in the league. But
- 5:37Speaker 1: I don't think that was just against a bad team.
- 5:40Speaker 1: I think Tah is the real deal right now. And
- 5:43Speaker 1: they are five and oh in games that Tua has
- 5:45Speaker 1: started and completed this season. And on Sunday it was
- 5:48Speaker 1: one of these deals where they're down big early and
- 5:51Speaker 1: it's like, Okay, we saw you do it against Baltimore
- 5:54Speaker 1: early in the season. Can you do it again? Can
- 5:55Speaker 1: you do it on the road again? And there's two
- 5:58Speaker 1: just throwing buttery passes, like beautiful passes to Hill, to
- 6:02Speaker 1: Waddle to Gasecki, And then you see things from Shirtfield
- 6:05Speaker 1: and most are Tuah is that dude? And I think
- 6:08Speaker 1: when Tua was gone and they lost three games, you
- 6:11Speaker 1: start to realize, Okay, maybe this isn't just you know,
- 6:14Speaker 1: a stop gap at quarterback, Toll their next guy. Maybe
- 6:16Speaker 1: Tua is the quarterback of the Miami Dolphins, not only
- 6:19Speaker 1: for the next few years, but for the long term.
- 6:22Speaker 1: Look at the numbers, and I'm not a huge stats guy.
- 6:24Speaker 1: You know that, Aaron, but he leads the league in
- 6:26Speaker 1: passer rating right now with one twelve. Okay, he leads
- 6:29Speaker 1: the league in passing yards per attempt with nine yards
- 6:32Speaker 1: per every time he throws the ball, and he is
- 6:35Speaker 1: third in completion percentage, meaning he's reliable. Then you go
- 6:37Speaker 1: to what those two wide receivers are doing and how
- 6:40Speaker 1: he gets them the ball in the most perfect ways
- 6:42Speaker 1: where sometimes it's behind the line of scrimmage and people
- 6:44Speaker 1: want to roll their eyes and say, okay, well that's
- 6:46Speaker 1: not a good No. He gets them in stride. He
- 6:48Speaker 1: gets them in position to succeed. Right now, Tyreek, who
- 6:52Speaker 1: I think I was one of them? I thought his
- 6:54Speaker 1: numbers would decline. Not with Mahomes. He leads the league
- 6:56Speaker 1: in receiving yards with nine hundred and sixty one. Stefan
- 7:00Speaker 1: digs is too, justin Jefferson's three. You know who four
- 7:02Speaker 1: is in the league, Jail and Waddle. They're first and
- 7:05Speaker 1: fourth in receiving yards. They've combined for one thousand, six
- 7:09Speaker 1: hundred and eighty eight receiving yards this season. That is
- 7:11Speaker 1: the most from a teammate duo in the first eight
- 7:13Speaker 1: games of a season since the Super Bowl era began
- 7:17Speaker 1: in nineteen sixty six. Okay, that is how good these
- 7:20Speaker 1: two have been. They're doing stuff that Isaac Bruce and
- 7:23Speaker 1: Tory Holt never did. And right now, you look at
- 7:25Speaker 1: the numbers, Tyreek hills on pace for two thousand and
- 7:28Speaker 1: forty two receiving yards in his first year in Miami.
- 7:32Speaker 1: All right, that would break the record for most receiving
- 7:34Speaker 1: yards in a season. I gotta tell you, I think
- 7:37Speaker 1: Tyreek has something with Tuah. I think Waddle has something
- 7:40Speaker 1: with Tua, and I think Tuah has something in that
- 7:42Speaker 1: locker room. I was hesitant to crown twa too early,
- 7:46Speaker 1: honestly I was. And then when he left the lineup
- 7:48Speaker 1: and that team took a major step back, I said,
- 7:51Speaker 1: all right, let's see. I thought sundays win against Detroit
- 7:54Speaker 1: was important. It showed that they can win on the
- 7:56Speaker 1: basis of Tuah and on Tuah's arm, and he was
- 7:59Speaker 1: sublime in that game. Yeah, all right. Last week we
- 8:02Speaker 1: did a little bit of a rule breakdown, So let's
- 8:04Speaker 1: do another one third down. What's the taking off the
- 8:08Speaker 1: helmet rule? And why is it the DJ Moore got
- 8:10Speaker 1: penalized if he was behind the end zone? What happened there?
- 8:13Speaker 1: Second week in a row, We've got a call and
- 8:15Speaker 1: I want to go like forty eight hours after it
- 8:17Speaker 1: was made before we get out to the next week
- 8:19Speaker 1: to kind of discuss it. And I think it's a
- 8:21Speaker 1: great question because I still don't know this DJ Moore
- 8:24Speaker 1: thing happened with the Carolina Panthers, and it's not the
- 8:27Speaker 1: Dallas Cowboys, and it's not the Kansas City Chiefs, and
- 8:30Speaker 1: it wasn't on Sunday Football. So I don't know if
- 8:32Speaker 1: it's going to get the play that a controversial call
- 8:35Speaker 1: usually would. But let's go through it here. Because the
- 8:37Speaker 1: rule states it is a penalty if there is a
- 8:40Speaker 1: removal of his own helmet by a player in the
- 8:45Speaker 1: field of play or the end zone during a celebration
- 8:49Speaker 1: or demonstration, or during a confrontation with a game official
- 8:53Speaker 1: or any other player. That's the letter of the law.
- 8:55Speaker 1: So the exact rule is quite clear. It is only
- 8:59Speaker 1: a foul for a player to remove his helmet to
- 9:02Speaker 1: celebrate if he is in the field of play or
- 9:04Speaker 1: the end zone. Watch the replay like almost like a
- 9:07Speaker 1: fruit footage. More is neither in the end zone or
- 9:11Speaker 1: in the field of play when he removes his helmet.
- 9:13Speaker 1: When the helmet comes off, he's out of the end zone.
- 9:16Speaker 1: And I don't know. It doesn't matter that he returned
- 9:19Speaker 1: to the end zone quickly without his helmet. There's no
- 9:22Speaker 1: foul for being in the end zone without a helmet.
- 9:24Speaker 1: The foul and the rule book is if you remove
- 9:27Speaker 1: your helmet in the end zone. The language specifically says
- 9:32Speaker 1: remove and then Perry Fuel, who is you know, the
- 9:36Speaker 1: voice of the refs right now works in the league office,
- 9:38Speaker 1: was a very fine job. He came out on Monday
- 9:40Speaker 1: Night Football and he was explaining it and he was
- 9:43Speaker 1: saying that, well, maybe it was identified wrong because there
- 9:45Speaker 1: was other players who took off their helmets. Well in
- 9:48Speaker 1: that case, is it not on more? Then you get
- 9:51Speaker 1: to this thing where it's like I think it might
- 9:54Speaker 1: have been Larry Flint. I don't mean I'm going off
- 9:56Speaker 1: script here. It's completely and it was like if it
- 9:58Speaker 1: looks like porn, it's porn, right, Like so Dj Moore
- 10:02Speaker 1: ripped his helmet off, Like it looked like he ripped
- 10:04Speaker 1: his helmet off. Do we really want to go through
- 10:06Speaker 1: whether it was technically in the end zone ver he
- 10:08Speaker 1: was in the out of the end zone, like we
- 10:10Speaker 1: know the rule is to not take off your helmet.
- 10:12Speaker 1: Emmett Smith rule. It's called from nineteen ninety seven. He
- 10:15Speaker 1: clearly rips off his helmet, but it's like almost like
- 10:18Speaker 1: a toe drag swag catch on the sidelines, like or
- 10:21Speaker 1: his feet in or not. If you're a Panthers fan,
- 10:24Speaker 1: you could be very angry right now. And the letter
- 10:27Speaker 1: of the law, that guy did not remove his helmet
- 10:30Speaker 1: until he was out of the end zone, and there
- 10:33Speaker 1: might not have been a flag. But if you're a
- 10:34Speaker 1: common sense fan, you look at that, you're like, yeah,
- 10:36Speaker 1: he ripped his helmet off in the field, like you're
- 10:38Speaker 1: not supposed to do that. It's dangerous or it's you know,
- 10:40Speaker 1: two celebratory whatever. I think both sides have a point.
- 10:44Speaker 1: But if we're gonna be rule book people, like we
- 10:47Speaker 1: are in the NFL and we're gonna check the letter
- 10:49Speaker 1: of the law and we're gonna bank on that, I
- 10:51Speaker 1: don't think DJ Moore committed a penalty. All right, Peter,
- 10:54Speaker 1: fourth down? Who do you want to shout out this week?
- 10:57Speaker 1: I want to shout out Terry McLaurin a right. Terry
- 11:00Speaker 1: mclauren was born in Indianapolis, raised in Indianapolis, went to
- 11:03Speaker 1: Cathedral High School. Was Indiana's miss football in high school
- 11:08Speaker 1: and it comes back to Indiana against the Colts, and
- 11:12Speaker 1: in the biggest of ways, it has an amazing homecoming.
- 11:16Speaker 1: Six catches on eight targets one hundred and thirteen yards,
- 11:20Speaker 1: including the huge, huge thirty three yard pass completion at
- 11:26Speaker 1: the end of the drive that was an eighty six
- 11:28Speaker 1: yard drive from Hinak to basically save the Commander's season.
- 11:31Speaker 1: I don't think I'm being, you know, a hyperbolic in
- 11:34Speaker 1: that this is now a four and four team. In
- 11:35Speaker 1: the thick of it, in the NFC twenty six or
- 11:39Speaker 1: seconds remain, he basically mosses a dude, and the dudey
- 11:41Speaker 1: Moss was Stefan Gilmour, who's probably a top five cornerback
- 11:46Speaker 1: of his generation, and McLaurin just goes and snatches it.
- 11:51Speaker 1: Of course, it puts him within the one yard line,
- 11:52Speaker 1: and then Hinak takes care of the rest. But then
- 11:54Speaker 1: after the game in the locker room, there's great footage
- 11:58Speaker 1: of all of mclaurin's like boys from high school. Like
- 12:00Speaker 1: there's like a crew of like six of them, all
- 12:02Speaker 1: wearing McLaurin shirts, all wearing McLaurin jerseys, and they're like
- 12:05Speaker 1: celebrating kids like and I don't know, if I'm being
- 12:08Speaker 1: overly sympathetic or it's or sentimental or whatever it is, Like,
- 12:13Speaker 1: I just I love that. Like I think that is
- 12:16Speaker 1: what it's all about. Your boys from high school who
- 12:18Speaker 1: are not in the NFL, your boys from high school
- 12:20Speaker 1: who are doing their own thing, getting to see you
- 12:22Speaker 1: play in the NFL, and then getting to hang out
- 12:24Speaker 1: in the locker room after you make the game winning play.
- 12:28Speaker 1: That's what the NFL is all about. I'm gonna shout
- 12:30Speaker 1: out Terry McLaurin, Welcome home, mister football, who gave the
- 12:34Speaker 1: Washington Commanders a huge, huge win, but also gave his
- 12:37Speaker 1: boys and his family something to smile about on the
- 12:40Speaker 1: ride home, probably five minutes away from where that game
- 12:42Speaker 1: was played. Yeah, that was. He looked incredible in that game,
- 12:45Speaker 1: and the emotion he had on the sideline after that
- 12:47Speaker 1: catch was so energy like it just loved watching him there.
- 12:52Speaker 1: What do you got, dude? Fourth down? You give me something?
- 12:54Speaker 1: Who do you want to shout out? All right? I
- 12:57Speaker 1: mean this, we've we've talked a lot about some of
- 12:58Speaker 1: these rookie running backspan a lot of Breeze Hall talk,
- 13:00Speaker 1: a lot of Kenneth Walker, a lot of those veteran
- 13:03Speaker 1: running backs were great this week. Kamara and CMC each
- 13:07Speaker 1: had their tenth game with a rushing and receiving touchdown.
- 13:10Speaker 1: But I want to talk about Derrick Henry. Yes, his
- 13:15Speaker 1: fourth career game with at least two hundred rushing yards
- 13:18Speaker 1: and two rushing touchdowns against Texans against one team. He's
- 13:21Speaker 1: done that with Dadian Thompson, Barry Sanders, Jim Brown. They
- 13:26Speaker 1: did that three times total over their career. Derrick Henry
- 13:30Speaker 1: has done it six total times, four of those times
- 13:33Speaker 1: against the Texans. He is I love watching him. He
- 13:36Speaker 1: looks unreal whenever he's out there. It's so fun as
- 13:40Speaker 1: the season progresses, just watching him get stronger and stronger.
- 13:44Speaker 1: He feels like like I don't know, like a robot.
- 13:47Speaker 1: He's incredible to watch and I just loved watching him.
- 13:51Speaker 1: He also had his second touchdown in that game, was
- 13:54Speaker 1: his seventy fifth career touchdown, and he has now set
- 13:57Speaker 1: the Tennessee franchise record, which was incredible. Passes Eddie George. Yeah,
- 14:02Speaker 1: and so now the Titans are in first like is
- 14:06Speaker 1: this this? Yeah? I look, this is what they do
- 14:08Speaker 1: and it's funny like they trade away a J. Brown
- 14:10Speaker 1: and everyone says, well, they're not gonna, you know, be
- 14:13Speaker 1: able to compete because they don't have a wide receiver.
- 14:15Speaker 1: That's not really their offense. When things are clicking, it's
- 14:17Speaker 1: like they're gonna be bullies, just like their head coach
- 14:20Speaker 1: is a bully, like Raybell is not a finesse guy.
- 14:23Speaker 1: It's they run the ball downder throat. And they've got
- 14:25Speaker 1: two all world players and those All World players are
- 14:29Speaker 1: Derrick Henry and Jeffrey Simmons. Who's their defensive end slash tackle,
- 14:33Speaker 1: who is in on every play. But Aaron, I go
- 14:35Speaker 1: back to the offseason. We do Good Morning Football and
- 14:38Speaker 1: we have to talk so much hypothetical, so much well,
- 14:43Speaker 1: who would you rather have this guy or this guy?
- 14:46Speaker 1: It was all about Jonathan Taylor this summer, and it
- 14:48Speaker 1: was like the crown has been seized. The crown has
- 14:51Speaker 1: been taken, and like, I think there's something to be
- 14:54Speaker 1: said for that Titans team and for that offensive line
- 14:56Speaker 1: and for Derrick Henry and their offensive coordinator Todd Downing
- 15:00Speaker 1: to be like, yo, we heard that, and I'll say
- 15:03Speaker 1: it again. The stat you just mentioned, Barry Sam had
- 15:06Speaker 1: three two hundred rushing yard games where he had two
- 15:08Speaker 1: rushing touchdowns Jim Brown had three of them, but Damian
- 15:11Speaker 1: Thomilton at three of them. Derrick Henry has had four
- 15:14Speaker 1: against the Texans. That's insane. Great shout out, dude, Derrick
- 15:19Speaker 1: Henry's the man. Ladies and gentlemen, We're very excited for
- 15:25Speaker 1: our Week nine guest of the season with Peter Schreeger.
- 15:29Speaker 1: He is a first year general manager in the Big Apple,
- 15:32Speaker 1: but he is so much more than that. He is
- 15:34Speaker 1: a great talent of evaluator, a great family man, and
- 15:37Speaker 1: a great visionary in the NFL. Ladies and gentlemen, let's
- 15:40Speaker 1: get to know Joe Shane, Joe, what is up man?
- 15:43Speaker 1: What's going on? Thanks for having me. I love that
- 15:47Speaker 1: you are joining us during the season. Now, this is
- 15:50Speaker 1: fresh off the loss in Seattle, so it's the bye week.
- 15:53Speaker 1: What's the first year in New York been? Like? I mean,
- 15:55Speaker 1: as a as a person in this backyard, Giants fans
- 15:58Speaker 1: are elated right now, regardless of the loss in Seattle,
- 16:01Speaker 1: like that, this is exceeding expectations. But for you, you
- 16:04Speaker 1: got here in January and now you're here and it's
- 16:07Speaker 1: all these months later, we're heading towards Thanksgiving. Like, what's
- 16:10Speaker 1: it been like? Yeah, it's been awesome. It's been it's
- 16:13Speaker 1: been a lot of fun. You know, early on, you know,
- 16:15Speaker 1: trying to feel my way through. You know, again it's
- 16:17Speaker 1: the first time doing it. And then you know, getting
- 16:19Speaker 1: day Ball in the building, making the head coaching hire
- 16:21Speaker 1: was was big. And then you know, getting the draft process.
- 16:25Speaker 1: You're going through that and you know, I brought in
- 16:26Speaker 1: Brandon Brown as my assistant general manager, so you know,
- 16:29Speaker 1: you're you're working with a staff you you've never been
- 16:31Speaker 1: through a draft before, You've never been through meetings before.
- 16:33Speaker 1: So just going through that first time with without really
- 16:36Speaker 1: knowing some of your staff members, and then you know,
- 16:38Speaker 1: post draft, being able to bring in some some other
- 16:40Speaker 1: people on the personnel side that I was familiar with,
- 16:42Speaker 1: that are that are very good at their jobs, and
- 16:45Speaker 1: you know, again just put in the right people in
- 16:46Speaker 1: the right seats. Um. I think it's been very important.
- 16:49Speaker 1: And you know, Brian obviously did that with his his
- 16:51Speaker 1: coaching staff and then you know some of the personnel
- 16:53Speaker 1: changes and then obviously the early success early on. Uh,
- 16:56Speaker 1: you know, it's been good. It's been good. It's been
- 16:58Speaker 1: it's been a lot of fun. It's been a fun ride.
- 16:59Speaker 1: Six and two we still have a lot of work
- 17:01Speaker 1: to do, but we're off to a really good start,
- 17:03Speaker 1: and I think that's important when you know there's new leadership,
- 17:06Speaker 1: new regime. You know, people talk about culture changes. To
- 17:09Speaker 1: see that there are some positive results and dividends early on,
- 17:12Speaker 1: you know, where you can kind of trust the process
- 17:14Speaker 1: and what we're implementing. And the players have been unbelievable
- 17:17Speaker 1: with their buying. Yeah, I mean, you guys have made
- 17:20Speaker 1: tough decisions because you've got the salary cap nightmare walking
- 17:22Speaker 1: into this thing and you're like, all right, we got
- 17:24Speaker 1: to get rid of this player, gotta get rid of
- 17:25Speaker 1: that player. You had to make a trade of a
- 17:26Speaker 1: former first round pick. You don't seem scared to pull
- 17:29Speaker 1: the trigger where the trigger you feel like it is
- 17:31Speaker 1: necessary to be made. Where do you get that from?
- 17:33Speaker 1: And is that kind of the only way you know
- 17:34Speaker 1: how to do Let's be fearless and just make decisions
- 17:36Speaker 1: whether they're going to be popular or not. Yeah, it's
- 17:38Speaker 1: that you got to do what's best for the organization.
- 17:40Speaker 1: And Dave's and I talk all the time, and everything
- 17:42Speaker 1: we do is going to be for you know, best
- 17:45Speaker 1: for the organization, where it's short term or long term.
- 17:47Speaker 1: I think it's important you do have a short term vision,
- 17:50Speaker 1: and you know that's kind of where coaches are naturally.
- 17:52Speaker 1: It's it's week to week and you know how to
- 17:54Speaker 1: coach one. A head coach tell me one time, he's like,
- 17:56Speaker 1: you know, every week is like the draft for the
- 17:58Speaker 1: coaching staff. You know, it's it's that important. You know
- 18:01Speaker 1: the amount of work you got to put into it.
- 18:03Speaker 1: And then you know, again with Dave's we're constantly talking
- 18:06Speaker 1: big sure is as well, and you know what do
- 18:08Speaker 1: these moves look like two to three years down the
- 18:10Speaker 1: line or you know whatever it may be. So yeah, again,
- 18:13Speaker 1: you just if you have the best interest to the
- 18:15Speaker 1: franchise in mind, and it's a it's a you know,
- 18:18Speaker 1: conscious effort to do the right thing and you've done
- 18:20Speaker 1: your research. You know, I have no problem pulling the
- 18:23Speaker 1: trigger on you know whatever, moving a player you're training
- 18:25Speaker 1: for a player. Again, we're just always gonna do its
- 18:28Speaker 1: best for the organization. The draft was an exciting time
- 18:31Speaker 1: in New York because both you and the Jets had
- 18:32Speaker 1: two top ten picks and it's like, here's this rebirth
- 18:36Speaker 1: of both these franchises with fresh blood in both buildings.
- 18:39Speaker 1: Cavon Thibodeaux the fifth overall pick. There was so much
- 18:43Speaker 1: talk about this guy, does he love football, what's his priorities?
- 18:46Speaker 1: And then the Giants get on the clock and it's
- 18:49Speaker 1: like fifth overall. You've heard his name rumor to the Jets,
- 18:51Speaker 1: you've heard his name, not much to the Giants. Then boom,
- 18:55Speaker 1: Cavon Thibodeau is the pick and he has been outstanding
- 18:57Speaker 1: the last few weeks. Could take us into that draft
- 18:59Speaker 1: process and what you guys liked in Katie and kind
- 19:01Speaker 1: of how you blocked out all the noise and you
- 19:03Speaker 1: got to know the player himself. Yeah, there was a
- 19:06Speaker 1: lot of noise, and you know, again, just the more
- 19:09Speaker 1: more time we spent with him, he was just He's
- 19:11Speaker 1: a big personality. He's a great kid. He's um, he's smart,
- 19:16Speaker 1: he's a hard worker, he plays his butt off. He's
- 19:19Speaker 1: done everything we've asked him to do. And you know,
- 19:21Speaker 1: as we went through the process, I love being around him.
- 19:23Speaker 1: We had a couple of dinners with him, spent time
- 19:26Speaker 1: with the combine Dave's and I FaceTime name you know,
- 19:29Speaker 1: right before the draft, you know, he answered the phone
- 19:31Speaker 1: and you know we just kind of you know, hey,
- 19:34Speaker 1: what's going on. Just small talk, just you know, very
- 19:36Speaker 1: casual conversation outside of the formal interviews and the x's
- 19:39Speaker 1: and those and and all that stuff. And you know,
- 19:41Speaker 1: I took a real liking to him, and at the
- 19:44Speaker 1: end of the day, you know, there was just I
- 19:46Speaker 1: didn't have any concerns with with the kid. And again,
- 19:48Speaker 1: I know some people worry about you know, the nils
- 19:51Speaker 1: and you know, people having a you know, some of
- 19:53Speaker 1: these kids have a staff now and they're making you know,
- 19:55Speaker 1: a couple of million dollars a year as college kids.
- 19:57Speaker 1: I mean, I don't know. I wouldn't needed a staff
- 19:59Speaker 1: too if I was twenty one or twenty two and
- 20:01Speaker 1: a lot of companies were coming at me and needed
- 20:03Speaker 1: my time and offering me money. So you know, it's
- 20:06Speaker 1: just an generation of kids and a new time for
- 20:08Speaker 1: us that's a little bit unchartered waters And you know,
- 20:11Speaker 1: the more you went through it with Cavan, he was
- 20:12Speaker 1: actually really smart in the way he set up some
- 20:14Speaker 1: of his nil stuff to avoid any type of distraction.
- 20:18Speaker 1: So I like the kid. He's a culture fit for us.
- 20:21Speaker 1: He's doing a great job, and you know he's gonna
- 20:23Speaker 1: be one of those foundational pieces that we continue to
- 20:25Speaker 1: build this thing. Yeah, it's your first draft and you've
- 20:27Speaker 1: been you know, in scouting since two thousand and one.
- 20:30Speaker 1: You get this opportunity to draft and out of the gates.
- 20:32Speaker 1: I know two of them are injured, but like Evan
- 20:34Speaker 1: Neil was playing well, Daniel Bellinger was playing well. You
- 20:38Speaker 1: look at that rookie class and for the Giants fans listening, like,
- 20:40Speaker 1: just give us a little ninety seconds or an elevator
- 20:43Speaker 1: speech on what you like from this crew and why
- 20:45Speaker 1: you'll always be close to them as your first draft class. Yeah,
- 20:48Speaker 1: I like the class a lot. And right now, you know,
- 20:50Speaker 1: I have my our and let us department do a
- 20:54Speaker 1: you know, kind of a rookie playtime report each week.
- 20:56Speaker 1: I've been doing it for years and right now we're
- 20:58Speaker 1: fourth in the league and rookie playtime so we're having success.
- 21:01Speaker 1: We're six and two and the rookies are contributing and
- 21:04Speaker 1: getting valuable experience. And again, there's not a lot of
- 21:07Speaker 1: rookies that are come in that are you know, instant
- 21:09Speaker 1: coffee and they have to go through their ups and downs.
- 21:11Speaker 1: And you know, Evan Neil, I think, you know, take
- 21:13Speaker 1: out the Dallas game. It was Monday night. Um, all
- 21:17Speaker 1: eyes were on you and they have a really good
- 21:19Speaker 1: defensive line and you know, otherwise, I think he's played
- 21:21Speaker 1: really well. He's our type of guy, smart, tough and dependable.
- 21:24Speaker 1: Cavan's in the same boat again. He was hurt, you know,
- 21:27Speaker 1: coming off the knee, and as he's continued to get healthy.
- 21:30Speaker 1: You know, you've seen you know, the flashes, not just
- 21:32Speaker 1: versued the run, but the past you know, still the
- 21:34Speaker 1: play where he ran down you know ETN and the
- 21:37Speaker 1: Jacksonville game, you know, Wan Dell the same thing. Yeah,
- 21:39Speaker 1: it's amazing because Evan had an MCL, Cavon had an MCL.
- 21:43Speaker 1: One Dell had an MCLs. Like I got three guys
- 21:45Speaker 1: with ACL, so they have been banked up, but one
- 21:47Speaker 1: Dell had an MCL as well. And you know, now
- 21:49Speaker 1: that he's come back, he's going to be a big
- 21:51Speaker 1: part of our offense moving forward. Uh, clear defined plan
- 21:54Speaker 1: for him, you know, with Daves and his offensive system
- 21:56Speaker 1: in Kafka. Josh A Zudu started and played one hundred
- 21:59Speaker 1: percent of snaps for US against Seattle. He's a young
- 22:02Speaker 1: guard that we really like, you know, bright future for him.
- 22:04Speaker 1: Cordell Flott, you know, started and played some games. You again,
- 22:08Speaker 1: he's got a calf right now, he's gonna be back.
- 22:09Speaker 1: But yeah, Bellinger and Belton fourth round picks that have
- 22:12Speaker 1: both contributed, both have bright future star startup potential, and
- 22:16Speaker 1: both of those guys, and then, um, you know the
- 22:19Speaker 1: fifth round guys, Michael McFadden he played twenty seven snaps
- 22:22Speaker 1: on defense the other day for us. He's playing well
- 22:24Speaker 1: and doing special teams. And then you know, we got
- 22:26Speaker 1: the back three guys that all tour acls, Davidson, mckeithan
- 22:30Speaker 1: and Beavers who were having all having good camps and
- 22:33Speaker 1: we were relying on them. So you know, on the
- 22:35Speaker 1: eleven guys, I'm really excited. You know, they're the right
- 22:37Speaker 1: type of guys. They're good foundational pieces that you know
- 22:40Speaker 1: will be contributors, you know, for years to come. Yeah,
- 22:44Speaker 1: one last question about the current roster. Obviously, I've got
- 22:47Speaker 1: to ask a Daniel Jones question. What have you seen
- 22:49Speaker 1: from him so far? And already you know in this market,
- 22:51Speaker 1: it's what's the long term extension. I'm not going to
- 22:53Speaker 1: press you on that, but um, you gotta at least
- 22:56Speaker 1: be pleasantly surprised or not. Maybe you saw this like
- 22:59Speaker 1: this kid as tough as nails and he's playing really well. Yeah, no,
- 23:02Speaker 1: he Daniel's tough, he's competitive, another guy who does everything
- 23:06Speaker 1: he can and to maximize his ability. He's in here early. Again,
- 23:09Speaker 1: it's our it's our off day, the players are off.
- 23:11Speaker 1: I saw him in there at seven thirty this morning
- 23:13Speaker 1: at breakfast. So he's a gym rat. He's always around.
- 23:16Speaker 1: He's gonna do whatever he can, like I said, to
- 23:18Speaker 1: maximize his ability. So he's played well. You know, I
- 23:20Speaker 1: know the big story out there is the fourth quarter comebacks.
- 23:23Speaker 1: I mean, that's that's legit. You know. One of the
- 23:25Speaker 1: drives I think about was when we were in London
- 23:27Speaker 1: against Green Bay. We had a fifteen play drive for
- 23:30Speaker 1: a touchdown. Sa Quan got hurt on the first play,
- 23:33Speaker 1: so you know, say Quan's out for the other you know,
- 23:34Speaker 1: he went seventh freight on the drive and that the
- 23:36Speaker 1: incompletion was a was a throwaway. So he's taking care
- 23:39Speaker 1: of the football. We're not turning it over. And you know,
- 23:42Speaker 1: again we've had you know, now we've got a couple
- 23:44Speaker 1: injuries on the offensive line. We've had some injuries a receiver. Unfortunately,
- 23:48Speaker 1: it's a little bit of a revolving door with with
- 23:50Speaker 1: who he's throwing too. And that's just kind of where
- 23:52Speaker 1: we are based on, you know, the salary cap and
- 23:54Speaker 1: where we were in the off season. But um, you'll
- 23:56Speaker 1: never hear the guy complained, and you know he's playing
- 23:58Speaker 1: well for us. I love it. Um, all right, So
- 24:01Speaker 1: you're the general manager of the New York Football Giants. Dude,
- 24:04Speaker 1: let's go back to the kid from Indiana who played
- 24:07Speaker 1: it to Paul and played quarterback and wide receiver. And
- 24:11Speaker 1: in two thousand and one you get an internship in
- 24:14Speaker 1: the ticketing department with the Carolina Panthers. Take us through
- 24:19Speaker 1: what the next step is and how you find yourself
- 24:23Speaker 1: even in position to enter the scouting world. Yeah, it's
- 24:27Speaker 1: it's interesting. So it was. It was actually January two thousand,
- 24:31Speaker 1: so it was my junior year of college. And you know,
- 24:33Speaker 1: Carolina played a game against Green Bay or maybe it's
- 24:36Speaker 1: New Orleans, but they had to beat beat New Orleans
- 24:38Speaker 1: by X amount of points and Green Bay had to
- 24:40Speaker 1: you know, it's one of those deals to get in
- 24:41Speaker 1: the playoffs, and they didn't do it. So my first
- 24:44Speaker 1: day on the job, the season's over. I'm in the
- 24:46Speaker 1: ticket office at the time, there was four or five
- 24:48Speaker 1: people in the ticket office, so it wasn't a big
- 24:49Speaker 1: staff and I was during like winter break. So yeah, yeah.
- 24:54Speaker 1: At De Paul University have a great program. It's called
- 24:57Speaker 1: winter Term. So your freshman year you have to stay
- 25:00Speaker 1: on campus, which is great. You take one class, it's
- 25:02Speaker 1: all freshman on campus. It's a blast sophomore, junior, senior year, internship,
- 25:07Speaker 1: travel abroad, whatever it may be. I would recommend anybody
- 25:10Speaker 1: that's doing it to do an internship because if you
- 25:12Speaker 1: want to be an accountant and you go work for
- 25:13Speaker 1: ers and young for that month and you're like this sucks.
- 25:17Speaker 1: At least you know your account more year versus before
- 25:19Speaker 1: you get your degree, right, That's kind of the purpose
- 25:21Speaker 1: of it. So anyways, my junior year, my mom had
- 25:26Speaker 1: a business in NASCAR. She was living in North Carolina.
- 25:28Speaker 1: Knew the neighbor of the neighbor to the ticketing manager.
- 25:31Speaker 1: So yeah, it's a three week internship. Phil Yazzi was
- 25:34Speaker 1: his name, come on in and then it happened to
- 25:36Speaker 1: be this season was over again, so I'm taking inventory
- 25:39Speaker 1: as suites and taking phone calls and everything. We got
- 25:41Speaker 1: to know the people there and when it was over
- 25:44Speaker 1: They're like, hey, if you want to work training camp,
- 25:45Speaker 1: I'm gonna get you in contact with the assistant full operations.
- 25:48Speaker 1: Guy's name is Brandon Bean. I'm like all right, So
- 25:52Speaker 1: I stayed in contact with Brandy. He's like, yeah, come
- 25:54Speaker 1: on down for training camp. You can work. And so
- 25:57Speaker 1: on July eleventh of two thousand, my twenty first birthday,
- 26:01Speaker 1: was my first day, you know, went to Charlotte. My
- 26:03Speaker 1: mom dropped me off like I was going to camp
- 26:05Speaker 1: or you know, backed lunch exactly exactly, and uh, you know,
- 26:09Speaker 1: we got in the buses and we went down to
- 26:11Speaker 1: set up training camp in Spartanburg. So Brandon I became
- 26:14Speaker 1: fast friends. Uh, you know, working for him. You know,
- 26:17Speaker 1: we played basketball training camp. Him and I are both
- 26:19Speaker 1: uber competitive, so uh, we were on the same team
- 26:22Speaker 1: to start off training camp a few times, and you know,
- 26:24Speaker 1: we became fast friends. And that training camp was you know,
- 26:27Speaker 1: setting up beds, TVs in the rooms, uh, stocking the
- 26:31Speaker 1: coaches with gator raids while they're at practice, you know,
- 26:33Speaker 1: whatever it may be. And then um, you know, fast
- 26:36Speaker 1: forward to the next you know, February. In between then
- 26:39Speaker 1: it was my senior year. I had a couple of
- 26:41Speaker 1: job offers. Um, you know, the story goes. You know,
- 26:43Speaker 1: Striker offered me a job. It was my first interview
- 26:46Speaker 1: I'd ever. I'd never been on an interview before. Striker
- 26:49Speaker 1: a medical device cochetical device company. I had buddies I
- 26:51Speaker 1: played with that we're working there and loving it and
- 26:54Speaker 1: you know, it's good money, and I couldn't make up
- 26:57Speaker 1: my mind. And literally the Friday I'm going to meet
- 27:00Speaker 1: Brandon in Indianapolis at the Combine because when I went
- 27:02Speaker 1: to school to Paul's only forty five in from Indianapolis.
- 27:05Speaker 1: I had to tell Monday to ax that contract back.
- 27:07Speaker 1: They called me on Friday before I left to meet
- 27:10Speaker 1: Brandon and they pulled the offer. They're like, if you
- 27:12Speaker 1: haven't made up your mind yet, then this isn't for you.
- 27:14Speaker 1: And it's a good company. I under I understand where
- 27:16Speaker 1: they're coming from. So went at dinner with Brandon that night.
- 27:19Speaker 1: He said, we'll find something for you. Let me, you know,
- 27:21Speaker 1: give me some time. And then you know, luckily they
- 27:23Speaker 1: had a guy retire and a scouting department and they
- 27:26Speaker 1: had a scouting assistant job open up. So um, Brandon called,
- 27:30Speaker 1: you know I when and I interviewed for here's the
- 27:31Speaker 1: other funny part about that. So I interviewed for the job,
- 27:34Speaker 1: and you know the old adage, I just want to
- 27:36Speaker 1: get my foot in the door. Yeah, I can't, you know,
- 27:38Speaker 1: that's what you say. Well, it's this old school guy
- 27:41Speaker 1: from Pittsburgh, Jack Bouschowski. I love the death. Can you
- 27:45Speaker 1: cuss on it? I don't know if guy cuss on
- 27:46Speaker 1: your body. So I'm like, you know, this senior in college,
- 27:49Speaker 1: I just want to get my foot into the door.
- 27:51Speaker 1: He's like, I don't want somebody wants to get their
- 27:53Speaker 1: foot in the door. I want someone wants to scout.
- 27:55Speaker 1: And I'm like, let's go. I'm not getting this job.
- 28:00Speaker 1: So uh So, anyways, I go through the interview process,
- 28:04Speaker 1: I get back to school and I know this because
- 28:07Speaker 1: you know, the guy who was replacing as a scouting
- 28:09Speaker 1: assistant is is a very good friend of mine. And
- 28:12Speaker 1: they offered the job to a kid from Slippery Rock
- 28:14Speaker 1: because he was from Pittsburgh and Slippery Rocks in Pennsylvania
- 28:17Speaker 1: kind of the Pittsburgh ties. They he calls him like
- 28:20Speaker 1: a seven thirty in the morning, and the kid answers
- 28:22Speaker 1: the phone like, oh, you know, like he's sleeping hung
- 28:26Speaker 1: over sleeping. So he hangs up the phone. He calls
- 28:28Speaker 1: my buddy, He's like, hey, give me that Joe Shane
- 28:31Speaker 1: Kid's number, calls me and offers me the job because
- 28:34Speaker 1: that guy sounded like he was incredible. Yeah, that guy
- 28:39Speaker 1: right now is the general manager of X team. No, no,
- 28:42Speaker 1: he's I don't know who he is or what, but anyway,
- 28:45Speaker 1: so I know it's kind of a long story, but yeah,
- 28:47Speaker 1: the two thousand kidding it's great. Yeah, and it also
- 28:49Speaker 1: tells a lesson because I mean, we watch, we watch
- 28:52Speaker 1: all this stuff and then you get these fantasy football experts. Ever,
- 28:54Speaker 1: because I could be a GM, I could be a gym.
- 28:56Speaker 1: You started because you put yourself out there and you
- 28:59Speaker 1: wanted it, and you turned down a job for less money.
- 29:01Speaker 1: And then Brandon for those listening, no, obviously is now
- 29:04Speaker 1: executive of the Years with the Buffalo Bills. But I remember,
- 29:07Speaker 1: I remember Brandon when he was in the public relations department. Yeah, yeah, yeah, no,
- 29:11Speaker 1: he he started kind of the same path and worked
- 29:13Speaker 1: over to the football side. And again his was just
- 29:16Speaker 1: getting your foot in the door and then you know,
- 29:18Speaker 1: working your tail off, and that's what you know. One
- 29:20Speaker 1: of the stories I tell with Brandon too. Is about
- 29:22Speaker 1: two weeks in a camp, I called my mom. I'm like, yeah,
- 29:24Speaker 1: this sucks, Brandon, this Brandon bean guys got me. You
- 29:27Speaker 1: got him five to thirty every morning making the you
- 29:28Speaker 1: know coffee for the coaches. And um, what happened was
- 29:32Speaker 1: I did it for the first two mornings. We had
- 29:33Speaker 1: a special teams coach. It always wanted his coffee at
- 29:35Speaker 1: five thirty had to be you know, made and ready,
- 29:38Speaker 1: and so I did it for the first two days
- 29:39Speaker 1: and the third day the guy didn't wake up and
- 29:41Speaker 1: do it, so it missed it. So Brandon gets his
- 29:43Speaker 1: butt chewed out because that coffee's not ready. Then you
- 29:46Speaker 1: get it, Joe, I can count on you the first
- 29:48Speaker 1: two days to do it. So unfortunately, for now on
- 29:50Speaker 1: every morning and training camp, you have to get up
- 29:52Speaker 1: at five thirty, walk over to the coach's office and
- 29:54Speaker 1: make coffee. So, you know, my mom said, well, sometimes
- 29:57Speaker 1: you know, you get punished for being good at your job,
- 29:59Speaker 1: and you know you're dependable, so you know that's a
- 30:01Speaker 1: task you're gonna have to do, and you know she
- 30:03Speaker 1: was right on and again that earned Brandon's trust, which
- 30:05Speaker 1: then you know down the road, you know he trusted
- 30:08Speaker 1: to give my name to somebody to eventually hire me
- 30:11Speaker 1: as a as a staff member. So so yeah, it
- 30:14Speaker 1: was cool. Yeah, it's it's funny how it worked out
- 30:16Speaker 1: when you really look back at it, you know, it's
- 30:18Speaker 1: an interesting story. But yeah, then two thousand and one,
- 30:20Speaker 1: I was a scouting assistant for a year, you know,
- 30:22Speaker 1: making highlight tapes, you know, picking people up to the airport,
- 30:25Speaker 1: just helping out a practice, doing anything I could do
- 30:28Speaker 1: to you know, to show out was worthy of. No
- 30:31Speaker 1: job was too big for me, and then they could
- 30:32Speaker 1: depend on me to do the job and do it right. Yeah,
- 30:35Speaker 1: and Carolina had some really good years. And then something
- 30:38Speaker 1: you know that's a skip forward ten years or so,
- 30:40Speaker 1: but something that really plays in this New York market
- 30:42Speaker 1: is that, you know, you have a connection to Bill Parcels.
- 30:44Speaker 1: Could you take us through that connection and how you
- 30:46Speaker 1: and the two and I got to know each other. Yeah.
- 30:49Speaker 1: So when I was an area scout with the Carolina Panthers,
- 30:51Speaker 1: I was living they moved me to uh. I actually
- 30:53Speaker 1: lived in Frisco, Texas where the Cowboys facility is now,
- 30:56Speaker 1: is way before any of that stuff was there. But
- 30:58Speaker 1: you know, we'd fly in for meetings three or four
- 31:00Speaker 1: times year, draft meetings and stuff. Well, we had Dan
- 31:03Speaker 1: Henning was our offensive coordinator, like best friends with coach Parcels. Well.
- 31:08Speaker 1: Dan never bought a condo or a house or anything
- 31:11Speaker 1: in Charlotte, so he lived in the residence in where
- 31:13Speaker 1: we stayed at scouts. It was right next he lived
- 31:15Speaker 1: in a hotel Inteme, so you know, anytime we'd go there,
- 31:20Speaker 1: you know, he was happy as I'll get out because
- 31:22Speaker 1: now it's got seven or eight guys to hang out with.
- 31:24Speaker 1: And he was a great storyteller and a ton of
- 31:26Speaker 1: football knowledge. So I love Dan Hending. He was He
- 31:28Speaker 1: was awesome, great mentor for me. And you know Bill
- 31:31Speaker 1: was one of his best friends. So when Bill went
- 31:34Speaker 1: to Miami in two thousand and eight, Dan was hired
- 31:38Speaker 1: as the offensive coordinator and brought my name up to
- 31:40Speaker 1: Jeff Ireland. I knew Jeff, but you know, we weren't
- 31:43Speaker 1: you know, I wouldn't say we were like friends or
- 31:45Speaker 1: I don't even know if I had a cell number
- 31:46Speaker 1: at the time, but we knew each other just from
- 31:48Speaker 1: passing in the scouting circle. Went down and interviewed as
- 31:51Speaker 1: a national scout, covering the entire country instead of just
- 31:53Speaker 1: doing an area and was able to get the job.
- 31:56Speaker 1: Then and then yeah, first I remember my first draft
- 31:59Speaker 1: meeting being around coach Parcels and you're just, uh, you know,
- 32:02Speaker 1: you're gonna give your opinion and there's coach Parcels who's
- 32:05Speaker 1: won super Bowls. You know it when his eyes are
- 32:08Speaker 1: like validating because I because I've worked with Sean Payton
- 32:10Speaker 1: on Fox and the amount of Parcels stories he tells
- 32:12Speaker 1: and just everything is a busting chops. But was he
- 32:15Speaker 1: like encouraging or was he you don't know anything? Yeah,
- 32:18Speaker 1: he was unbelievable. He was unbelievable. I actually asked me
- 32:21Speaker 1: to have more of a voice in the meeting. He's like, Joe,
- 32:22Speaker 1: you've seen the entire country, Like, speak up more. And
- 32:25Speaker 1: you know, I was like feeling out the room. It
- 32:27Speaker 1: was a staff that had been together. You know. I
- 32:29Speaker 1: was trying to feel my way through the dynamics. But
- 32:31Speaker 1: he was a great coach. He would not just obviously
- 32:34Speaker 1: football and everything else, but he he would always say,
- 32:37Speaker 1: you know why we would do this, or you know
- 32:38Speaker 1: why we're making this roster decision, or why are you
- 32:40Speaker 1: guys thinking this way in a meeting when you know
- 32:43Speaker 1: why take a projection in the first round when you
- 32:45Speaker 1: got this guy who's had production of a position it's
- 32:47Speaker 1: a known commodity or you know this is what you know.
- 32:50Speaker 1: He just had so much knowledge, he say, you know
- 32:52Speaker 1: what Tom Landry used to tell me, Like, oh my god,
- 32:54Speaker 1: so Tom Landry told build parselves and about to tell me.
- 32:56Speaker 1: You know, I got a ton of notes from my
- 32:58Speaker 1: from my time with him, and he's just a great
- 33:00Speaker 1: sounding board to this day. You know when I was
- 33:02Speaker 1: going through the process talking to him, and um, just
- 33:05Speaker 1: a wealth of knowledge and a great human being. And
- 33:07Speaker 1: you know he truly cares about you. And you know
- 33:09Speaker 1: you talk all the players and coaches and other gms
- 33:12Speaker 1: that have worked for him that still stay in contact
- 33:14Speaker 1: with him and use him as a valuable resource. Did
- 33:17Speaker 1: you get together with him in Saratogodoll? Did you try
- 33:19Speaker 1: to make the journey now that you're with the Giants?
- 33:21Speaker 1: I need to, I need to. I know Chris Merra
- 33:23Speaker 1: goes up there quite a bad He's got some horses
- 33:24Speaker 1: up there, and Dan Henning spends a lot of time
- 33:26Speaker 1: up there, So I'd like to get up there. We
- 33:28Speaker 1: try to get him to come through in August. It
- 33:30Speaker 1: just h you know, the timing didn't work out, but yeah,
- 33:33Speaker 1: I would love for him to get around or or
- 33:35Speaker 1: get up there at some point. Yeah, you know, I
- 33:38Speaker 1: find all of your stories, General Manager is so interesting
- 33:41Speaker 1: because take these circuitous routes to where you are. Give
- 33:45Speaker 1: me this this answer the player that you scouted that
- 33:49Speaker 1: you take the most pride in in that I banged
- 33:52Speaker 1: the table for this guy, or I saw him in
- 33:55Speaker 1: a in a random game that no one else was
- 33:58Speaker 1: talking about. And then this guy got to the NFL
- 34:00Speaker 1: and didn't have to have an all World's career, but
- 34:02Speaker 1: like made a name from them, and I was that
- 34:05Speaker 1: first set of eyes, or I was that voice in
- 34:07Speaker 1: the war room on any of your stops, whether it
- 34:09Speaker 1: being Carolina or Buffalo or Miami. Who was that guy
- 34:12Speaker 1: that you take a lot of pride in and you
- 34:13Speaker 1: hear that name and like something clicks and you're like,
- 34:15Speaker 1: you know what that was, my dude? Oh man, that's
- 34:17Speaker 1: always hard to do. One of the things I'm most
- 34:21Speaker 1: proud of is probably that first draft class in Buffalo.
- 34:23Speaker 1: I know that's you're looking for one in particular, but no, no,
- 34:26Speaker 1: it's okay. It's hard when you're going through a draft
- 34:30Speaker 1: and I just went through it again. When when when
- 34:32Speaker 1: you don't have continuity and you don't know everybody, so
- 34:35Speaker 1: you kind of you have a smaller circle and who
- 34:37Speaker 1: you can trust. But I mean that first draft class
- 34:40Speaker 1: and Brandon Brandon was very good. He's like, hey, when
- 34:42Speaker 1: we drafted Cam Newton, we were so focused on the quarterback.
- 34:46Speaker 1: The rest of the draft was not so great. So
- 34:49Speaker 1: we have to make sure if we're looking for a
- 34:51Speaker 1: quarterback that we still got everything else. You know, eyes
- 34:54Speaker 1: dotted tea's cross. And when you look at that class,
- 34:58Speaker 1: Josh Allen, Tremaine, Edmonds, Harrison Phillips just got paid by Minnesota,
- 35:04Speaker 1: Karen Johnson got paid by Buffalo. Uh srand Neil just
- 35:07Speaker 1: got paid by Buffalo. Wyatt Teller's a two time All Pro.
- 35:10Speaker 1: They got paid by Cleveland. I wish we wouldn't have
- 35:13Speaker 1: trade anybody. Ray Ray mcclouds still in the league. Still
- 35:18Speaker 1: in the league. Again, I tell you, I do that
- 35:20Speaker 1: rookie playtime report, like that class is number one right
- 35:22Speaker 1: now in Rookie playtime. You know, to this day you
- 35:26Speaker 1: look three, four or five years down the road. So um,
- 35:29Speaker 1: I know that's not one player, but I'm proud of that.
- 35:31Speaker 1: You have pride in it. That was Brandon. I you know,
- 35:33Speaker 1: our first year together. You know a stat we had.
- 35:36Speaker 1: People don't realize this or I don't know if they
- 35:37Speaker 1: do or not, but they fired the entire pro scouting
- 35:41Speaker 1: staff and every single person and didn't do it until July.
- 35:44Speaker 1: So you guys got their win, Like we got there July.
- 35:47Speaker 1: They did it right after the draft. So they did
- 35:49Speaker 1: it right after the draft, and I'm like, you know,
- 35:50Speaker 1: it's a team that hadn't been in the playoffs in
- 35:52Speaker 1: seventeen years. It's like, Brandon, how are we going to
- 35:54Speaker 1: get people to you know, and people aren't letting good
- 35:56Speaker 1: scouts go and so we got We got very lucky
- 36:00Speaker 1: with this. I mean, look at this our original staff.
- 36:02Speaker 1: I mean, Marvin Allen's now assistant GYM with Miami, he
- 36:05Speaker 1: was there. Brian Gaye on to become the GM of
- 36:07Speaker 1: the Texans um you know, we just had. I mean,
- 36:10Speaker 1: we had a uh Lake Dawson. You know, it's been
- 36:12Speaker 1: a VP before, like Malik Boy, Terrence Gray. Like, we
- 36:16Speaker 1: were able to put together a really really good staff
- 36:18Speaker 1: with experience in youth and you know that made those meetings.
- 36:22Speaker 1: You know, again, it goes back to the scouting staff,
- 36:23Speaker 1: the guys with the boots on the ground and all
- 36:25Speaker 1: these schools. Um it was very important. That was a
- 36:27Speaker 1: daunting task to you know, to hire an entire scouting
- 36:30Speaker 1: staff in the month of May pro and college. When
- 36:33Speaker 1: you saw Josh Allen tape, what do you think, Oh, man,
- 36:38Speaker 1: I'll never forget one of the scouts. Still reminds me
- 36:40Speaker 1: all the day. Like his game against Nebraska. He threw
- 36:42Speaker 1: four interceptions and I gave him a plus. You know,
- 36:47Speaker 1: that was a good game. That was a good game.
- 36:50Speaker 1: But yeah, the thing with Josh is like, if you
- 36:54Speaker 1: like the player, he's even a better person. Like you
- 36:57Speaker 1: can't like, I love the human being, like the way
- 37:00Speaker 1: what he's about. He's wired right, he's like the players great,
- 37:04Speaker 1: but the person's even better. And we fell in love
- 37:06Speaker 1: with the us And you know when we were doing
- 37:07Speaker 1: our certain research back and you know, the spring in
- 37:10Speaker 1: twenty eighteen draft has shaken out. In that first draft,
- 37:13Speaker 1: the first time Brandon's in the big seat, first time
- 37:15Speaker 1: here in your chair, and we see Baker go, and
- 37:19Speaker 1: we see Darnold go, and then of course, you know,
- 37:21Speaker 1: say Quan and quittin Nelson, you guys, you get aggressive
- 37:25Speaker 1: and you go and get a quarterback. Do you remember
- 37:27Speaker 1: the conversations going into it, like if this guy slips,
- 37:30Speaker 1: Like what was the talk when you were like, let's
- 37:32Speaker 1: go make that move. Yeah, well we knew early on
- 37:35Speaker 1: and if so, we had we were twenty one and
- 37:38Speaker 1: twenty two when the season ended. We ended up making
- 37:40Speaker 1: the playoffs that year. We had Kansas City's pick two
- 37:43Speaker 1: and we used a Corty Glenn. We traded to Cincinnati,
- 37:46Speaker 1: so we stopped like twenty one to twelve, and that
- 37:49Speaker 1: got us in range. But again we were trying to
- 37:52Speaker 1: move up. You know, we couldn't move to one. Dorsey
- 37:55Speaker 1: wouldn't trade one, Dave Gettlman wouldn't trade two. Three was
- 37:59Speaker 1: the Jets. They weren't going to trade with us, and
- 38:00Speaker 1: they made a move early on with the Colts. We
- 38:03Speaker 1: were actually literally working out Josh. I'm snapping the ball
- 38:06Speaker 1: to Josh at Wyoming and I get this update on
- 38:08Speaker 1: my Apple Watch and it said the Jets traded with
- 38:11Speaker 1: the Colts, and I'm just like at number three, am like,
- 38:15Speaker 1: you know, we couldn't have everything. Yeah, I didn't met
- 38:17Speaker 1: with the guys yet, so you know, we were in
- 38:18Speaker 1: a position to move up because we had to make
- 38:20Speaker 1: sure that there's somebody that we were gonna actually like,
- 38:21Speaker 1: you know, we saw the film, but you know that's
- 38:23Speaker 1: a position. You gotta get to know the kids too.
- 38:25Speaker 1: So anyways, we had something in place with Denver, but
- 38:27Speaker 1: their guy was there, which ended up being Chum. You know,
- 38:31Speaker 1: Cleveland ended up staying at four and taking awards. So
- 38:33Speaker 1: you know, when Jason Light got on the phone, you know,
- 38:36Speaker 1: we had some talks back and forth and it you know,
- 38:38Speaker 1: we're haggling, Um hung up and then they called back.
- 38:42Speaker 1: Brandon got on the phone with Jason, and that was
- 38:43Speaker 1: the first time somebody was willing to do business with us,
- 38:47Speaker 1: um where we could take the you know, take the
- 38:48Speaker 1: quarterback that we wanted. So it was cool. We took
- 38:51Speaker 1: him at seven. Kind of everybody was relieved, you know,
- 38:54Speaker 1: we're happy. And then you know, Tremaine was still up
- 38:56Speaker 1: there and we said, let's let's go get Tremaine. And uh,
- 38:58Speaker 1: it's funny. We ended up you know, being able to
- 39:00Speaker 1: get Tremaine with a you know third round pick that
- 39:02Speaker 1: we used. You know, we traded Tyrode to Cleveland for
- 39:04Speaker 1: the first pick of the round. That allowed us to
- 39:06Speaker 1: go up and get Tremaine, so we had some You're
- 39:09Speaker 1: getting draft capital and draft picks give you currency on
- 39:12Speaker 1: draft data to move around and make some of those moves.
- 39:15Speaker 1: If you don't have the currency, it's it's it's tough
- 39:17Speaker 1: to move around. But yeah, that was an exhilarating evening
- 39:20Speaker 1: to say the least. And it's a good bridge to
- 39:23Speaker 1: my next thing, because you know we're here recording this
- 39:26Speaker 1: week nine. Ryan Poles, first year general manager of Chicago
- 39:29Speaker 1: trades a franchise, you know, Star and Raccon Smith, but
- 39:31Speaker 1: he gets a second and a fifth and now they've
- 39:33Speaker 1: got draft picks. And as a general manager, I always say,
- 39:37Speaker 1: like I talk to you guys, it's you don't have
- 39:39Speaker 1: to get them all right, but the more bats you
- 39:42Speaker 1: have at the plate, the better. And I think you know,
- 39:44Speaker 1: with what the Giants have coming up, like you guys
- 39:46Speaker 1: are pretty stocked and ready for the next few drafts,
- 39:49Speaker 1: you have to like what you have moving forward as
- 39:51Speaker 1: far as the young players on relatively inexpensive contracts, and
- 39:56Speaker 1: then how good you guys are at analyzing college talent
- 39:59Speaker 1: and being able to identify those next next great pros. Yeah,
- 40:02Speaker 1: we have nine picks going in next year. You know,
- 40:04Speaker 1: financially we'll be in a better shape. And then you
- 40:07Speaker 1: know the good thing, you know what the roster is.
- 40:11Speaker 1: There's some players that were here before I got here
- 40:13Speaker 1: that are are good young talent, you know, Andrew Thomas, Dexter,
- 40:16Speaker 1: Lawrence Xavier McKinney, Julian Love, Say, Quan Daniel you know,
- 40:20Speaker 1: they're the Daniel Jones. There's there's pieces in place, um
- 40:24Speaker 1: that we're here previously that you know, hey, if they
- 40:25Speaker 1: continue to you know, perform at their their level, you know,
- 40:29Speaker 1: they're you know, you take care of your own and
- 40:32Speaker 1: then you add a couple of draft classes, you know,
- 40:33Speaker 1: some supplement someone free agency and um, you know again
- 40:37Speaker 1: and start building it the right way, bringing in our
- 40:38Speaker 1: type of guys. So yeah, I mean I'm excited about
- 40:41Speaker 1: the future. Um, you know, we had a plan in place,
- 40:43Speaker 1: we've been able to execute it this far, and um,
- 40:46Speaker 1: you know, I think we'll be in you know, getting financially,
- 40:48Speaker 1: we're gonna be much better shape this offseason and give
- 40:50Speaker 1: some flexibility and free agency and then having nine picks
- 40:53Speaker 1: you know, gives you you know options there to continue
- 40:56Speaker 1: to add young foundational pieces. Um on top of the
- 40:59Speaker 1: draft class that we have this year. So yeah, I'm
- 41:01Speaker 1: excited how things are going at six and two right
- 41:02Speaker 1: now at the bye week. You know, coaching staff's done
- 41:04Speaker 1: amazing job. Personnel pro in college, they've done a really
- 41:07Speaker 1: good job. So I'm excited where we sit. I grew
- 41:11Speaker 1: up in Freehill, New Jersey, which is in Central Jersey,
- 41:13Speaker 1: about forty minutes from MetLife. Giants Country all the way.
- 41:17Speaker 1: I live in Brooklyn, New York, and right now it's
- 41:20Speaker 1: Giants Country all the way. I just work on a
- 41:23Speaker 1: television show and people just want to talk Giants with
- 41:26Speaker 1: me everywhere I walk the last few months, what has
- 41:28Speaker 1: been your best or funniest interaction with a Giants fan,
- 41:32Speaker 1: whether it be at Dunkin Donuts or whether it be
- 41:34Speaker 1: at the DMV, whoever. It's like, these are characters and
- 41:37Speaker 1: I know you've encountered them in your everyday life. Yeah,
- 41:39Speaker 1: probably at Lows this spring. My wife was still in
- 41:42Speaker 1: Buffalo and she came over. It might have been right
- 41:44Speaker 1: after the draft. And again I've just been bunkered in.
- 41:47Speaker 1: I was at a temporary living. I'm going back and
- 41:49Speaker 1: forth from temporary living to the office, and that's I
- 41:52Speaker 1: really didn't get out much. So We're at Lows and
- 41:54Speaker 1: you know, we're looking for some stuff, and oh my gosh, dang,
- 41:57Speaker 1: this guy's like following me around like every aisle, Like
- 41:59Speaker 1: I look and this guy's kind of standing there staring
- 42:02Speaker 1: at me. I'm like, what the world's going on? Not
- 42:03Speaker 1: even again, I haven't been out, so I'm not like
- 42:05Speaker 1: somebody wreck cognizes me or I'm just not used to it.
- 42:08Speaker 1: So finally he kind of comes up to me, and
- 42:10Speaker 1: I'm getting kind of creep down. He's like, are you
- 42:12Speaker 1: Joe Shane, general manager the Giants. I'm like, yeah, So
- 42:17Speaker 1: it was just a can I get a picture with you?
- 42:18Speaker 1: And it was at Lows and again it was it
- 42:20Speaker 1: was in the spring, and I just it's it's hard
- 42:22Speaker 1: to I mean, you go from assistant jam or you
- 42:25Speaker 1: know whatever, just nobody knows who. Yeah, the New York
- 42:28Speaker 1: Posts one day, see yourself on the back page of
- 42:30Speaker 1: the paper. Yeah, I haven't got rid of I haven't
- 42:32Speaker 1: got used to that yet, or even pregame just walking
- 42:34Speaker 1: out to the game or somebody's yelling her name or
- 42:36Speaker 1: something like. I just it still catches me off guard.
- 42:39Speaker 1: But yeah, I just the time of Lows with my wife.
- 42:41Speaker 1: I'm you know, the guy asked for a picture of
- 42:43Speaker 1: me or something. It was just kind of like, all right,
- 42:44Speaker 1: I don't mind doing it, but it was just, you know,
- 42:46Speaker 1: getting used to that. It's like they're they're passionate. Like
- 42:50Speaker 1: the crowd has been unbelievable. I don't know if you're
- 42:52Speaker 1: here for that Monday night game or not, but um,
- 42:54Speaker 1: the Ravens game Chicago, Like the atmosphere has been unbelievable
- 42:59Speaker 1: at the stadium, it's been awesome. One of the coolest
- 43:02Speaker 1: videos or one of the coolest stories. I think the
- 43:04Speaker 1: article is done, and I hate that I don't have
- 43:06Speaker 1: the writer. Maybe it was Ryan Dunlevy In the post.
- 43:08Speaker 1: It was about uh, your pops's reaction when he heard
- 43:11Speaker 1: the news and all that could cook tell the story
- 43:13Speaker 1: of who your father is and where he found out
- 43:15Speaker 1: the news and what he's all about. Yeah, so my
- 43:19Speaker 1: dad still lives in El card Indiana, where where I
- 43:21Speaker 1: grew up, and uh, he's worked for the same company
- 43:24Speaker 1: Roadway for like, you know, he's thirty nine years he's
- 43:26Speaker 1: number one on the seniority pool and uh he's about
- 43:30Speaker 1: to retire. I think in February. He says he's one
- 43:31Speaker 1: of those guysho complains about his job, but I think
- 43:33Speaker 1: he actually loves going every day. So yeah, I got
- 43:37Speaker 1: the call and I walked up to my my offer. Well,
- 43:40Speaker 1: first I had to we're getting ready practice against Kansas City,
- 43:42Speaker 1: so I was trying not to be a distraction. Some
- 43:44Speaker 1: people saw I had a call from East East Rutherford,
- 43:46Speaker 1: so I knew something was up. I gave him the
- 43:48Speaker 1: thumbs up and I got out of there. I just
- 43:49Speaker 1: didn't want to be a distraction with going to Kansas
- 43:52Speaker 1: City in the playoffs. So you know, I went outside
- 43:54Speaker 1: and I called him, and yeah he was. He was
- 43:55Speaker 1: super proud, you know, got teary eyed, and uh, it
- 43:59Speaker 1: was really cool experience because you know, again, you know,
- 44:02Speaker 1: he worked hard. He taught me work ethic. You know,
- 44:04Speaker 1: every a lot of the you know DNA and who
- 44:07Speaker 1: I am today is is because of him and his
- 44:09Speaker 1: work ethic, and um, what he instilled in me at
- 44:11Speaker 1: a young age. So really cool experience. He's excited, he's
- 44:14Speaker 1: super proud. Uh. You know, he's got like a couple
- 44:17Speaker 1: of different places of breakfast spots and and uh you know,
- 44:20Speaker 1: dinner places where he goes and eats on a weekly basis.
- 44:23Speaker 1: And now they've got giants stuff up there? Is that right?
- 44:27Speaker 1: What's the town called. It's El Card Indiana's and it's
- 44:30Speaker 1: giants Country. Now yeah, yeah, it's giants Country. It's known
- 44:33Speaker 1: as the RV Capital World. So all the RVs you
- 44:35Speaker 1: see on the on the road with a lot of
- 44:37Speaker 1: them are made of No Card. It's about I'm about
- 44:38Speaker 1: ten miles east of Notre Dame, so you know the
- 44:42Speaker 1: South Bend, so very cool. Um, do we give our
- 44:45Speaker 1: secret breakfast spot? Do we give him a shout out? Yeah,
- 44:47Speaker 1: give him a shout out. Maybe we get a free
- 44:49Speaker 1: uh fream? All right, Combine, let's go back to February. Joe,
- 44:54Speaker 1: it just gotten the job, Brandon Bean. Uh. Brandon and
- 44:57Speaker 1: I have a long tradition of getting at breakfast. Back
- 44:59Speaker 1: when Brandon was in Carolina, we'd go to this place
- 45:01Speaker 1: called pata Chew at the Combine and it was like
- 45:04Speaker 1: top secret, no one else would go. Brandon I would
- 45:07Speaker 1: get some cinnamon toast and some delicious eggs. So Joe
- 45:10Speaker 1: joined us. But I gotta say, it's not such a
- 45:13Speaker 1: secret anymore. It felt like this was like a sort
- 45:15Speaker 1: of like spring break in the NFL. I didn't like
- 45:17Speaker 1: the fact that our precious patache in Indiana is now
- 45:20Speaker 1: the spot in the combine? Yeah, you're talking twenty five
- 45:22Speaker 1: thirty minute. Wait now, it's it's unfortunate. Now, maybe it's
- 45:25Speaker 1: this little shout out here will get us to the
- 45:27Speaker 1: front of the line next year. Yeah. And I asked Joe,
- 45:30Speaker 1: I said, all right, fifth overall, pick you tell me
- 45:32Speaker 1: who are we taking? And he did not say the
- 45:34Speaker 1: word Cavon Tao. So I just I know who to
- 45:37Speaker 1: trust when it comes to my mock drafts. Moving forward,
- 45:40Speaker 1: lastly before we go, Dude, if there's a young man
- 45:43Speaker 1: or woman right now in their twenties in college, just
- 45:46Speaker 1: out of college, and they play fantasy football, they love
- 45:48Speaker 1: the NFL and they're like, they meet you in an elevator,
- 45:52Speaker 1: I want to be an NFL general manager. How do
- 45:54Speaker 1: I get there? What are your values, what are your tenants?
- 45:58Speaker 1: And what is that message to that young man or woman? Yeah?
- 46:00Speaker 1: I think again. What I tell a lot of people
- 46:03Speaker 1: is go work with the colleges. Now you got these
- 46:05Speaker 1: NILD it's basically like free agency. Not to mention they
- 46:08Speaker 1: still got a recruit, so you can get valuable experience
- 46:11Speaker 1: evaluating high school players for these colleges. If you want
- 46:14Speaker 1: to come in and do the evaluation part for the NFL,
- 46:16Speaker 1: but you know, work hard, be on time, be dependable,
- 46:20Speaker 1: pay attention to detail, and to me, the best type
- 46:23Speaker 1: of employees are when you can give them something and
- 46:26Speaker 1: you know it's going to get done the way you
- 46:27Speaker 1: expect it to get done and you don't have to
- 46:29Speaker 1: double check it or find airs or anything like that.
- 46:31Speaker 1: So the ability for somebody to depend on you is
- 46:34Speaker 1: the most important because again my leadership style, I'm not
- 46:37Speaker 1: a micro manager. I'm gonna let you do your job
- 46:39Speaker 1: as long as I know it's getting done the way
- 46:41Speaker 1: it's supposed to be done in the expectations of being met.
- 46:43Speaker 1: Because if I have to micromanage, I'm going to find
- 46:45Speaker 1: somebody else to do it. So I don't have to micromanage.
- 46:47Speaker 1: So yeah, I just work hard. Again, I tell people
- 46:51Speaker 1: around here, like if it's business side or whatever, I
- 46:53Speaker 1: may not know what you do on a daily basis,
- 46:55Speaker 1: but I know every day at seven am, I see you,
- 46:57Speaker 1: or you're the first one in, or you're here laid
- 46:59Speaker 1: or you know, whatever may be in. So when my
- 47:01Speaker 1: scouts are going to schools, like you know, you never
- 47:04Speaker 1: know what day. Another general manager is going to be
- 47:05Speaker 1: there and they don't know who you are. But you
- 47:07Speaker 1: came prepared. You were the first one there, and you
- 47:09Speaker 1: asked really good questions when you were in with pe
- 47:12Speaker 1: liaisons or whatever. It may be. So um for people
- 47:15Speaker 1: that want to be a GM again, I think going
- 47:16Speaker 1: to college route first is the best way. The way
- 47:19Speaker 1: it's structured now. I mean they have gms of colleges now,
- 47:21Speaker 1: and then there's there's several gms that There's one at Alburn,
- 47:24Speaker 1: there's one in North Carolina, there was one at Georgia Tech.
- 47:26Speaker 1: So um. You know that route's a good, you know,
- 47:29Speaker 1: foundational piece in terms of getting some evaluation experience, and
- 47:32Speaker 1: then once you get your foot in the door, take
- 47:34Speaker 1: advantage of it. It's up to you once you get
- 47:35Speaker 1: that opportunity. Hey, I'm ready to run through a law
- 47:38Speaker 1: for you. It wasn't a pet dog. Hey. Look I'm
- 47:43Speaker 1: at I'm at Good Morning Football every morning at five am.
- 47:46Speaker 1: And I'm here and I'm like looking through like depth charts,
- 47:48Speaker 1: so I could talk about Cincinnati's you know, new corners
- 47:51Speaker 1: are gonna because Adobe A Woozier's hurt. I want to
- 47:53Speaker 1: be at GM. I want to work for you, Joe,
- 47:55Speaker 1: This is it, M dude. I appreciate you so much.
- 47:58Speaker 1: I understand you're a busy guy, and it's not often that,
- 48:01Speaker 1: you know, during the bye week someone would hop on
- 48:02Speaker 1: and do an interview. But you're such a great dude,
- 48:05Speaker 1: and and you're truly a visionary in this field, and
- 48:08Speaker 1: we really appreciate you coming on the podcast. You do
- 48:09Speaker 1: a great job. Man. Thanks for having me anytime. Peter
- 48:12Speaker 1: all right. Joe Shane, general manager of the New York Giants.
- 48:15Speaker 1: He's got New York in a frenzy right now, feeling
- 48:18Speaker 1: good about their team, a team they could be proud of.
- 48:20Speaker 1: More to come here on this season. Thanks again to
- 48:23Speaker 1: Joe Shane. Joe Shane, awesome guest. Awesome guy. I hope
- 48:30Speaker 1: the purpose of this podcast is that you get to
- 48:33Speaker 1: know these decision makers and some of the guys behind
- 48:36Speaker 1: some of the big decisions in the NFL a little
- 48:37Speaker 1: bit better. And Joe really is one of the true
- 48:39Speaker 1: great dudes of the NFL. And one of the true
- 48:42Speaker 1: great dudes of the NFL network is my friend Tony
- 48:44Speaker 1: Holzman Escarano. Tony, what's up, a good man? Hey, how
- 48:48Speaker 1: are you doing? Sharks? Glad to be back here again.
- 48:50Speaker 1: No doubt. Tony is with the NFL network's research department
- 48:54Speaker 1: and often is the one kind of loaded me up
- 48:57Speaker 1: with good nuggets, good info, good stats, good research, the
- 49:01Speaker 1: combine and the draft coverage, for sure, but also I
- 49:03Speaker 1: use this stuff during Good Morning Football all the time,
- 49:05Speaker 1: and Tony, we're doing the highlights from the Niners Rams
- 49:09Speaker 1: game and I throw a comment out there on the
- 49:12Speaker 1: broadcast and I'm like, Christian McCaffrey has a rushing touchdown,
- 49:15Speaker 1: a passing touchdown, and a receiving touchdown in the same game,
- 49:18Speaker 1: and I go, I can't imagine there's a lot of
- 49:19Speaker 1: running backs who have done that. And you hit me up,
- 49:22Speaker 1: and I wanted to bring you on to make us
- 49:24Speaker 1: smarter because you always do Historically, how rare is it
- 49:27Speaker 1: for a running back to do the triple crown receiving, rushing,
- 49:31Speaker 1: passing touchdown and then take us through what you think
- 49:34Speaker 1: McCaffrey brings to the table here in San Francisco. Well,
- 49:37Speaker 1: since the nineteen seventy NFL merger, there's only been three
- 49:41Speaker 1: running backs, including McCaffrey, to do that. One is Walter
- 49:44Speaker 1: Payton and the other is the Danny and Tomlinson. So
- 49:47Speaker 1: a lot of great company McCaffrey's in right now, multiple
- 49:50Speaker 1: gold jackets, the thing that players are all shooting for sure.
- 49:54Speaker 1: The wildest thing with this is that he's the first
- 49:56Speaker 1: player with thirty yards and a touchdown passing, rushing and
- 50:00Speaker 1: receiving in the same game. So he actually he also
- 50:02Speaker 1: added the yard. I like that, So it wasn't just
- 50:03Speaker 1: like a one yard pass, it was the thirty yard.
- 50:07Speaker 1: The pass was actually the third longest by a forty
- 50:11Speaker 1: nine Ers player over the last three seasons five yards
- 50:14Speaker 1: the like touchdown, third longest pass touchdown by air yards.
- 50:19Speaker 1: Another thing that's crazy about what McCaffrey did is he
- 50:21Speaker 1: also did this in college, also against an LA based team,
- 50:25Speaker 1: against USC in the twenty fifteen Pack twelve champions Nice.
- 50:28Speaker 1: So it's not new for McCaffrey to do the one
- 50:31Speaker 1: one in one the triple single, I guess we can
- 50:33Speaker 1: call it single. I like that. That's good. But as
- 50:37Speaker 1: far as CMC in Shanahan's offense, we all know Shanahan
- 50:41Speaker 1: loves to get the ball to his guys in space
- 50:43Speaker 1: and let him meat. And he literally added the ultimate
- 50:46Speaker 1: Swiss army knife into his toolbox McCaffrey's over the last
- 50:49Speaker 1: five seasons. McCaffrey's second in yards after catch by running
- 50:53Speaker 1: backs over that same time span, George Kittle's first among
- 50:56Speaker 1: tight ends, nice and Deebo Samuel is first among all
- 51:00Speaker 1: players in yards after catch pert positionless players. He has
- 51:05Speaker 1: a bunch of chess pieces he can move around and
- 51:07Speaker 1: do whatever he wants to with, and over the last
- 51:10Speaker 1: two games that he's played with the let's call it
- 51:12Speaker 1: one and a half yea, yeah, he's played in the
- 51:17Speaker 1: slaughter out wide on twenty percent of his snaps and
- 51:20Speaker 1: been used in motion or shift on a quarter of
- 51:23Speaker 1: his snaps. So Shanahan's moving him around making sure he
- 51:27Speaker 1: gets the most out of McCaffrey. I don't know who
- 51:29Speaker 1: let Kyle Shanahan get Christian McCaffrey. Like there should have
- 51:31Speaker 1: been like at one coming together and being like, no,
- 51:35Speaker 1: don't let this happen. You know how fantasy footballers that
- 51:38Speaker 1: do not drop list should be a do not let
- 51:40Speaker 1: Kyle Shanahan have this player list that McCaffrey would be
- 51:42Speaker 1: right on the top of it. You know it's so
- 51:44Speaker 1: true because, like I reported it, the next day, McVeagh
- 51:47Speaker 1: and the Rams were in on this and they didn't
- 51:49Speaker 1: have all the draft picks that the Niners did, and
- 51:51Speaker 1: at the end of the day, it was like the
- 51:53Speaker 1: highest bidder type deal. But for those at Alma don't know,
- 51:56Speaker 1: like Kyle Shanahan baby sat Christian McCaffrey baby sat him.
- 52:02Speaker 1: The story goes that, like, you know, Mike Shanahan was
- 52:06Speaker 1: the head coach in Denver, Ed McCaffrey's the star wide receiver,
- 52:08Speaker 1: Kyle Shanahan was a little toddler and like Edward babysit.
- 52:11Speaker 1: Then you go, you know, before that, even Ed McCaffrey
- 52:15Speaker 1: was on the ninety four nine Ers team that Mike
- 52:18Speaker 1: Shanahan was a coach on and Kyle was obviously okay.
- 52:21Speaker 1: And then Kyle Shanahan goes to Texas before he transfers
- 52:24Speaker 1: to Duke and at Tech or maybe the other way around.
- 52:27Speaker 1: Maybe he was at Duke and Chres techas I forget
- 52:28Speaker 1: my chronological orders all screwed up. That's why they got
- 52:30Speaker 1: a research department. But he wore eighty seven at Texas
- 52:34Speaker 1: and that was because Kyle Shanahan worshiped ed McCaffrey so
- 52:37Speaker 1: much that he wore eighty seven. Like that's crazy. And
- 52:41Speaker 1: now they're together, and it's like, all right, of course
- 52:42Speaker 1: they're together. A lot of family ties going on there,
- 52:45Speaker 1: for sure. A Shahan got the only player in NFL
- 52:48Speaker 1: history to average fifty yards rushing and receiving in their career,
- 52:50Speaker 1: so he's one of one. He got one one player
- 52:55Speaker 1: in that deal, and he has through twenty twenty five.
- 52:58Speaker 1: So let's go. You're one of one, bro. Thank you
- 53:00Speaker 1: for making us smarter. Christian McCaffrey and Tony Holtzman Escaranna,
- 53:03Speaker 1: we'll get you next week. Appreciate you, Shreks. Thank you
- 53:05Speaker 1: so much for having me. And now it's becoming maybe
- 53:08Speaker 1: my favorite part of the podcasts, and this is the
- 53:11Speaker 1: fourth time we're doing. At the end of every podcast,
- 53:13Speaker 1: I bring on one of my friends, whether it be
- 53:16Speaker 1: a childhood friend, a college friend, someone I've worked with
- 53:19Speaker 1: in the past, who has a take. The take could
- 53:21Speaker 1: be anything. Last week, my buddy Noah tour apart Paul
- 53:25Speaker 1: Rudd's take that the guy who caught the Aaron judge
- 53:27Speaker 1: sixty first ball did the right thing by giving it
- 53:29Speaker 1: back to Aaron Judge. Noah said, that's ridiculous. The right
- 53:33Speaker 1: thing is to take a million dollars and feature family.
- 53:35Speaker 1: The first week of the podcast, we had my buddy
- 53:37Speaker 1: Aaron on my college roommate, and Aaron came on and
- 53:40Speaker 1: made the claim that the House of Dragons is better
- 53:43Speaker 1: than the original Game of Thrones. It got a lot
- 53:46Speaker 1: of pushback from fans of both shows. From fans of
- 53:49Speaker 1: Game of Thrones, I wouldn't be lying if I had
- 53:51Speaker 1: some people who work at the actual home box office
- 53:54Speaker 1: chime in with thoughts after that take, and they were
- 53:57Speaker 1: pro that take. They'd liked those ratings. They thought that
- 53:59Speaker 1: was a good promotion for the show. I'm bringing Aaron
- 54:01Speaker 1: on again because we're recording this the day after Halloween,
- 54:05Speaker 1: and I just hear Ausen and his voice and over
- 54:08Speaker 1: his text, I could say that he has a take
- 54:10Speaker 1: on the Halloween holiday. Aaron. Welcome back to the season
- 54:13Speaker 1: with Peter Schreger. Thank you, Peter. It is great to
- 54:16Speaker 1: be back and I'm loving the podcast, loving the podcast.
- 54:20Speaker 1: Rud was great, Noah, great take. He did a great job.
- 54:23Speaker 1: Good job, Noah, great take. What's your take for week A,
- 54:27Speaker 1: number nine of the NFL season where you at, dude, Well,
- 54:30Speaker 1: you know it's October, at the end of October, and
- 54:33Speaker 1: I got to tell you mentioned exhaustion. What happened to Halloween?
- 54:37Speaker 1: What happened to the day. I want to stress the
- 54:40Speaker 1: day of Halloween because the day of Halloween and my
- 54:42Speaker 1: book has now turned into the month of Halloween. It
- 54:45Speaker 1: feels to me that we are just going on an
- 54:50Speaker 1: endless spree of Halloween celebration. I mean it literally is
- 54:53Speaker 1: turned into Super Bowl weekend for children. And you and
- 54:57Speaker 1: I've been to many a Super Bowl, so we know
- 54:58Speaker 1: what it's like to jam in as much as we
- 55:00Speaker 1: can do. I'm thoroughly exhausted, Peter. When I was a kid,
- 55:04Speaker 1: we just slapped together our own costumes. Uh you know.
- 55:07Speaker 1: I remember my my I was a Ghostbuster and my
- 55:10Speaker 1: mom drew on a T shirt, handing me a paper
- 55:12Speaker 1: roll towel with tinfoil and said, here you go, here's
- 55:15Speaker 1: your Ghostbuster blaster. Go egon. I'm telling you, Peter, the
- 55:21Speaker 1: amount of money that I just spent on Halloween, hundreds
- 55:26Speaker 1: of dollars went into I'm this is not a joke.
- 55:29Speaker 1: Eight costumes, eight different I have three children, Peter. You
- 55:32Speaker 1: know this, three children, eight costumes between three children. One
- 55:35Speaker 1: of those kids is one years old. We put him
- 55:37Speaker 1: in three different costumes. What is going on, Peter. I mean,
- 55:43Speaker 1: it's just an endless amount of Halloween. And I'll tell
- 55:45Speaker 1: you what it's going what's going on. It's all for
- 55:48Speaker 1: the social, It's all for Instagram. You know, you might
- 55:50Speaker 1: as well call my wife, Patrick Mahomes, she's she's she's
- 55:54Speaker 1: putting so much on social. Or that that guy from
- 55:57Speaker 1: Seattle that you know is now playing in Denver, Russell Wilson.
- 56:00Speaker 1: You know, you might as well. She's all for the
- 56:03Speaker 1: social just pictures goal or it's you know, you know, Peter,
- 56:07Speaker 1: when we used to be doing the wedding season, right,
- 56:10Speaker 1: we used to spend all this money and show ourselves
- 56:13Speaker 1: on this Instagram showing us partying and all this stuff.
- 56:16Speaker 1: I feel like ten years later now this is what
- 56:18Speaker 1: we're doing. Went from weddings to celebrating Halloween. That's all
- 56:21Speaker 1: we're doing is showing off on Instagram about how much
- 56:24Speaker 1: Halloween partying we're doing with the children and the parties
- 56:27Speaker 1: and the costumes and everything. I'm why multiple costumes? Why
- 56:30Speaker 1: not just the same costume? Like, who would someone judge
- 56:33Speaker 1: if you wore the same if you were a Stranger
- 56:35Speaker 1: Things character? Twice of course, Peter, because the social is
- 56:38Speaker 1: all about the views and the clicks, and you know,
- 56:40Speaker 1: the more times that you can come oh wow, now
- 56:42Speaker 1: now he's a Stranger Things. Oh now he's Star Wars.
- 56:45Speaker 1: Oh look at this. Now there. You know, it just
- 56:48Speaker 1: goes on and on, and it's all for the social media. Now,
- 56:51Speaker 1: you're not a grinch, but I will say this, Um,
- 56:54Speaker 1: there was a feeling of frustration when we were on
- 56:56Speaker 1: the text chain with all our college guys over the
- 57:00Speaker 1: adult Halloween responsibilities. Now, I'm not a suburban dad, so
- 57:03Speaker 1: I live a different life. I'm gone over the weekends.
- 57:05Speaker 1: I think this is very specific to the suburban adults
- 57:09Speaker 1: now because I see it all over the social media.
- 57:12Speaker 1: Husband and wife dressed together, something catchy, and then it's
- 57:16Speaker 1: Friday night, then it's Saturday night, then it's Sunday night,
- 57:19Speaker 1: then it's Monday night. What's happened? Well, I mean, Peter,
- 57:23Speaker 1: you know, I kind of just went on a riff
- 57:24Speaker 1: about the children, but I had to tell you it's
- 57:27Speaker 1: the same thing for the parents. My wife and I
- 57:30Speaker 1: we had four different costumes. Uh you know, we had
- 57:32Speaker 1: the we had we had the peanut, butter and jelly.
- 57:36Speaker 1: You had the cult leader and and and the follower.
- 57:40Speaker 1: You had one that was a fun one. Um, you
- 57:45Speaker 1: know you got to go on and on and and
- 57:48Speaker 1: we have different parties. But now I'm hearing about all
- 57:51Speaker 1: these like you know, hosting people at your house to
- 57:53Speaker 1: do clue like you know, Hollywood mystery, Halloween mystery things.
- 57:57Speaker 1: I mean, people are going all out, taking it to
- 58:00Speaker 1: all different types of crazy measures. I mean it is
- 58:04Speaker 1: thoroughly exhausting. We've turned Halloween into what was one single
- 58:08Speaker 1: day when when you were you and I were kids,
- 58:10Speaker 1: into this month long extravaganza that doesn't stop until thank god, yesterday,
- 58:15Speaker 1: it's over. We're done. You know what, when I was
- 58:18Speaker 1: a kid, you'd go trick or treating for the night
- 58:20Speaker 1: and if it rained, sorry, if it was cold, sorry,
- 58:23Speaker 1: Like you don't get it, do over, you don't get it. Also,
- 58:26Speaker 1: maybe there was that kid in your class the night
- 58:28Speaker 1: before who would take like a cartet eggs out and
- 58:30Speaker 1: like egg the teacher's house and that was it. Now
- 58:33Speaker 1: there's this obligation, but I will say this to have
- 58:37Speaker 1: like a silver lining to this whole thing. It is over,
- 58:41Speaker 1: and now you can turn to decorating your house with
- 58:44Speaker 1: Christmas attire, getting the ornaments up that it's a whole other,
- 58:48Speaker 1: whole other experience here, because that's an Instagram frenzy as well.
- 58:52Speaker 1: I mean, Halloween stops and here comes Holidays, and so
- 58:55Speaker 1: Instagram Galora, I'll see you. I'll see you there, Peter,
- 58:58Speaker 1: I'll be liking your pictures, liking you and Mel and
- 59:01Speaker 1: Erica can't wait to see that. Yep, here comes, here
- 59:04Speaker 1: comes holidays. All right, So a thousand dollars in the
- 59:07Speaker 1: whole eighteen costumes, lots of candy, but you know your
- 59:12Speaker 1: wife probably got thirty eight likes on that photo, so
- 59:14Speaker 1: it was all worth it, Pal, all worth it, you know,
- 59:17Speaker 1: anything for the kids and my wife. That's it. That's it, Aaron,
- 59:21Speaker 1: thank you for that ray of sunshine on this amazing,
- 59:24Speaker 1: amazing morning. Brother, Always a pleasure. Great take you, Peter.
- 59:30Speaker 1: That's it. That's what we bring. We bring you the
