- 0:00I am at the Charlotte Motor Speedway and you talk about an
- 0:04emotional day for me. I've met so many friends that
- 0:08still love NASCAR. My dear friend Charlie Springs,
- 0:12Springer, he's right there. Now.
- 0:15Let me tell you some about Springer.
- 0:17I talked to Tony Ewry junior, Tony Ewry senior, all Dale
- 0:20seniors people, and I said yes, Springer's my neighbor and they
- 0:23said Springer, we know Springer. So today we're going to go way
- 0:28back and we've been having a good time.
- 0:31I said, let me turn my phone on. And they said, OK, so Charlie
- 0:35lived across the street for me for years.
- 0:38These people here, I just met and we're going to go talk to
- 0:42them. There's still a lot of NASCAR
- 0:44fans that still love NASCAR, and they're very emotional.
- 0:55Look at this. Huh?
- 0:59They haven't left. There it is the legendary water
- 1:09tower. It's turned 3 and four and Harry
- 1:12go. Home.
- 1:16With you, Jeremy. There it is.
- 1:18We're going to talk about Trish in a minute.
- 1:22So there's Tricia Spring. She she ran this area.
- 1:28All right, now you all don't start crying on me.
- 1:34All smiles, OK? This man right here has been my
- 1:38friend for how long we've been friends, Springer. 1990.
- 1:43So when you moved. In a double wide.
- 1:46Hold on, say that loud. When you moved in a double wide
- 1:491990. CONCORD, NC Yeah, Charlie
- 1:54Springs. In the racing world we know him
- 1:56as Springer and you helped I I guess when Dale senior ran
- 2:02Metrolina, was you part of the crew?
- 2:05I was working on his brother in law's car.
- 2:07I love. That you raced against.
- 2:09It was that Oliver, David, Oliver, David Oliver.
- 2:13And I love that shirt. And one thing I noticed is
- 2:19you've got some friends here. Let's let's go around the horn a
- 2:22little bit. All right, tell me about
- 2:25yourself. Well, I've been here just raced
- 2:28track since that's going on 51 years this this week.
- 2:33That's all I've ever did is do racing like this.
- 2:36I've dirt raced all my earlier life, built race cars.
- 2:39One, we want a hillbilly hunter if anybody knows.
- 2:42You're a real racer. I've built race cars and raised
- 2:45in a Midget, you know, when I was a child, a baby and this is
- 2:49my life. I've I've like no other sports,
- 2:52nothing. This is my life and I, I would
- 2:55never change it for nothing. I met my wife, I got married
- 2:58here on this park right here and this is just great.
- 3:03It's a great life. Yeah.
- 3:05So, OK, you've been at these campgrounds.
- 3:10What what year did you come to the campgrounds here at the
- 3:13Charlotte Motor Speedway, Springer?
- 3:15Well, we just started camping here when Trish was working.
- 3:19She worked at golf carts. She run the Fantasistas golf
- 3:22carts and we started coming here.
- 3:25I met her at the 600 in 1990. Little.
- 3:32Trailer park across the road and we got married exactly a year
- 3:36later. And I, I knew it because you,
- 3:39you're my neighbor. We've been coming here ever
- 3:44since. So in in my world, I'm going to
- 3:47have fun with this. Tricia became what I call the
- 3:50mayor of the golf carts. They started for years if they
- 3:55gave you a ride on the golf carts, some of the money went to
- 3:57like churches and big. Ways to older charities, yeah.
- 4:01Yeah. And you know, it warmed my heart
- 4:05that, you know, 30 years later, I came over here to find you
- 4:08today and I pulled in and that man said, can I, Herman?
- 4:15He started saying, he started saying, can I help you?
- 4:18And he said, can I, Herman? And and he said, what are you
- 4:22doing? And he kept me down there for 20
- 4:24minutes. And I said, I I need to know
- 4:29where Charlie Springs is. He goes, well, let me go look.
- 4:32And he goes down and he looks, he comes back and he goes.
- 4:35Tricia's husband. So you've been here all these
- 4:40years. And you also helped me on my my
- 4:46Bush Grand National car. You were a big part of that, you
- 4:50and Tricia. But it means a lot to me that I
- 4:53got to see. It's been a little emotional
- 4:54day, hasn't it? Yeah.
- 4:57We love each other, don't we, old friends?
- 4:59That's right, baby. OK, let's go over here.
- 5:04Let's go over here and let's talk a little dirt racing.
- 5:07Look here, they starting to roll in crowd.
- 5:09Look here, crowds starting rolling.
- 5:11Go ahead, call her. You're on the air.
- 5:13Hey, Kenny. How you doing, buddy?
- 5:22Everybody's. Oh, that's me.
- 5:23That's my truck. You need to move it.
- 5:24Is that your spot? Yeah.
- 5:25They when I. Came in, they gave me, they
- 5:28directed. Me to 50.
- 5:29Four, am I supposed to be $50.00?
- 5:30So you're right there next to Springer.
- 5:32Springer, you want to go move it?
- 5:34Hey, it's one of those cars where you it's you push the
- 5:37brake and hit the starter and look, you, you you pull the
- 5:40lever and go down. You'll figure it out.
- 5:46These damn, these damn passenger cars.
- 5:48Now that you guys know what I'm talking about, you can't just
- 5:51turn the damn key anymore. All right, let me get in here.
- 5:55That was awesome. Stay right here.
- 5:56You all don't move. OK?
- 5:58Stay right here. That was too funny.
- 6:00Well, Springer, he's the Jack of all trades.
- 6:04OK, that was too quick. Tell me your full name.
- 6:07My. Name's Harry Wiley.
- 6:09Harry Wiley City, Tennessee. No.
- 6:11Where are you at, honey? You got a beginning.
- 6:14We got the real dirt Dirt racer right here.
- 6:17OK, What's your name? Judy Wiley.
- 6:21OK, both of you are dirt racers and you talk about Jonathan
- 6:27Davenport and you're as good at dirt racing Lingle as me.
- 6:33But yeah, you love NASCAR. Nowadays, that really doesn't go
- 6:37together very much. Let me get over here.
- 6:41OK, so we're we're going to include you.
- 6:44No, no, no. We'll close you a little bit.
- 6:47Look here. OK, so nowadays dirt racing
- 6:52people, they claim they don't like NASCAR.
- 6:56What? Let's start with you first.
- 6:59What does that mean when people dirt racing people?
- 7:02If you if you don't learn anything about dirt racing,
- 7:05that's still racing in today's world.
- 7:08Yes, we have NASCAR racing. These younger boys is racing,
- 7:12but they really don't know what real racing is.
- 7:15They didn't build a race car themselves or their brothers and
- 7:18sisters helped build a car. These are factory built cars.
- 7:23It's there's a lot of difference between a dirt racing car and
- 7:27that. If you don't blame me, go to
- 7:29Flow or one of the racing things and watch a live dirt race.
- 7:32So you, so you, you think some dirt racing fans are mad because
- 7:39they feel like NASCAR drivers have it easy or they just
- 7:44haven't put the time in? They don't.
- 7:46They haven't put their time in for drunk racing.
- 7:48Yes, the dirt guys. Both of them were raised at a
- 7:52dirt track locally in their hometown or real local and a lot
- 7:57of them as mine started out with a little 4 cylinder carve and
- 8:01now they got these super late models that are unbelievable
- 8:05race cars. Let's hold on.
- 8:08Let's do an update. Springer, yes, See, you can do
- 8:13everything you start. You started it up and you moved
- 8:16it. Hey, hey, hey.
- 8:22I'm going to, I'm going to tell you what some of these, some of
- 8:25these new cars out. It's like an act of Congress
- 8:28just to figure out how to get it going.
- 8:29I got more. Sense than I got.
- 8:33OK, now you have surprised me a lot because you really.
- 8:41How did you? I mean, you know so much about
- 8:43dirt racing. Is that just because you that
- 8:46that dirt racing has been your life?
- 8:49Yes. Yes, he's, I mean he, we have
- 8:51been to dirt races ever since I met the man.
- 8:55I met him at Bristol. I love it.
- 8:57At the race. That's badass.
- 8:59And then we came here that same year in May, which was 83, and
- 9:06we've been dirt racing and we've been a lot of dirt tracks.
- 9:11Why? OK, you 2 have been in this RV
- 9:15spot since what year 1995? Maybe of 1990.
- 9:18Five, you've been here not since 1995.
- 9:21This is the latest campground or not now is this is this is the
- 9:26they build a new one here just a while back.
- 9:28This is the primary campground of Charlotte Motor Speedway.
- 9:32And, and you're legendary here. And you've been, you've been,
- 9:35you've been neighbors. Springer's.
- 9:38Springer's spot is right over there.
- 9:43My dear friend Charlie lost his his beautiful wife not long ago.
- 9:48And that's very nice of you to make that really nice.
- 9:52I you're going to have a little memorial tonight.
- 9:54Yes, Sir. And Charlie knows how much we
- 9:56love him. And so nice little memorial
- 10:00tonight over there, Trish. Let let's just put this fight
- 10:06you meet a lot of people in your lifetime, but there's only
- 10:08certain ones that that touch you.
- 10:10She's one of them that has touched us in her life and he's
- 10:14got I call it's a godsend the people that we meet through
- 10:19racing. You got a lot of people you
- 10:21thinks you're friends, but these are true friends.
- 10:25OK, we're going to use this for coffee with Kenny on Thursday
- 10:29morning and let's end like this. You guys, you love dirt racing,
- 10:35but you've been at the campgrounds of the NASCAR
- 10:39tracks. Yes Sir, I've been to every race
- 10:41at Bristol Motor Speedway since 1960.
- 10:43One OK, is it emotional? Why do you love NASCAR so much
- 10:48when so many people have fell out of love with it?
- 10:51Why do I like it? Well, if we go back to Bristol,
- 10:55I as a first NASCAR race that my dad took me to 1961.
- 11:00I've been to everyone of them since.
- 11:01It's a tradition and the love of that place that I like.
- 11:06And I learned about Charlotte Motor Speedway later in life,
- 11:10and I came over here and I parked against a.
- 11:13Turn 1. Track and I fell in love with
- 11:17this place. I I have had three motor homes
- 11:20since and this is our life from me and my life and it's just
- 11:28it's a friendship. Let me tell you folks, if all
- 11:32communities were like these campgrounds that we have the
- 11:35speedways, we don't need a Police Department, we don't need
- 11:38anything. These all people you further
- 11:40driving $1,000,000 motor home or a pop up when they turn the key
- 11:44off they're all the same. And they don't talk bad about
- 11:50NASCAR. No, nobody talks about that.
- 11:52They just hear, they love it. It's just the the clue, the
- 11:56families that growed their kids up here, we watch them grow up
- 12:00from babies and mommy to babies that they're on sales.
- 12:04I got one. She'll be here today, tomorrow,
- 12:0622 years ago I gave her a little bear and she's got to come back
- 12:11to see me tomorrow. I've always thought it's been
- 12:14about the people and let's, let's and like.
- 12:17Go ahead, babe. Pregnant with triplets.
- 12:20And we watched those kids grow up until they were four or five
- 12:23years old, and then they gave up.
- 12:25In the in the campground. In the campground.
- 12:28She walked them with her strollers every year.
- 12:31Up by and you'd watch them go one year old 2 year old about
- 12:35the people it's. The people.
- 12:37It's the people. Yeah, it.
- 12:40Was amazing. You guys are wonderful.
- 12:42I love you and and thanks for telling the story because I get
- 12:45emotional. I love NASCAR so much and I get
- 12:47so damn tired of people beating it up for this or that.
- 12:50And and I tell people, let me go over Springer here for a minute.
- 12:53You stay right there. Go ahead.
- 12:55Hi, Ann Schrader. We miss you.
- 12:59I love that. I love that they love the
- 13:01Schraders. OK, tell me about yourself.
- 13:05Well, Kenny, I I've been coming here for over 20 years and this
- 13:09man saved my awning and this is how we became friends.
- 13:12So your awning was blown away. It, no, it started to blow away.
- 13:16He strapped it down for me, dummy me.
- 13:18I left it out, went to town and this gentleman saved, strapped
- 13:21it down for me, saved it and it would have cost me thousands of
- 13:25dollars if he wouldn't have. And I came back, he said, Sir,
- 13:28he says I'm sorry I touched your awning.
- 13:31He said I strapped it down. I hope you don't mind.
- 13:33I said we our friendship became the best he got for life.
- 13:38We're friends for life over that just because he strapped our.
- 13:42Running down what a story. Pardon.
- 13:45And and my dad. Did you lose?
- 13:46Your dad? No.
- 13:47Yeah, my dad's been gone since 2023.
- 13:50My dad too. Guys, we've lost a lot of
- 13:52people. Oh, but we're still here.
- 13:54Yep. My dad parked down here for.
- 13:57I love you. I love you.
- 13:58See, that's NASCAR, everybody. My dad parked down here for
- 14:01years and he loved the mirror, he loved, he loved Harry.
- 14:06Judy loved everybody and my dad never met a stranger.
- 14:10And he parked down there with me.
- 14:12And then after he left, I moved up here closer to Harry and
- 14:15Judy. And it's just we keep it going
- 14:19and I'm thankful, thankful, thankful to Harry and Judy.
- 14:23These are my friends right here. Let's go over Springer.
- 14:26I love you. Love you.
- 14:27OK, everybody, let's go over here to mine, my buddy.
- 14:33OK? So Charlie Springs.
- 14:37All right, I come over here to see you.
- 14:39I can't leave because we just keep talking and talking.
- 14:42Hell, you gave me. I'm on 2 bottles of water.
- 14:44I got cottonmouth. I got 2 bottles of water.
- 14:49I'm dead. Cottonmouth.
- 14:53All right, Spring. You're anything else to say,
- 14:55buddy? No, just enjoy the races and
- 14:57keep coming back. And Earnhardt.
- 15:01Earnhardt baby, right? Tired.
