- 0:00Welcome back to the kind of women's basketball Coaches show. Now we have a
- 0:02women's game, of course tomorrow, but we also also have a men's game
- 0:05tomorrow night. The guys take on Xavier at the Centas Center. That's an
- 0:09eight o'clock pregame along the network. Mike will be solo Whene has COVID unfortunately,
- 0:14so Mike will be solo tomorrow night, eight o'clock on the radio for
- 0:17that one, on the Varsity Network app and the Varsitynetwork dot com where you
- 0:21can hear Gino as well as we're doing the coach a show from his office
- 0:25as well. We'll talk to Kaykernold in just a bit, Gino, you're
- 0:29freshman. Speaking of which kk ash Cadence, I like the fact that during
- 0:35this stretch it's don't think, just play, and they've lived up to the
- 0:39billing and Ashton's really seemingly coming out of her shell. Yeah. You know,
- 0:45you ask these kids a lot of times, what was it about you
- 0:51that made me want to recruit you? Because the food was nothing, then
- 0:58I wouldn't have recruited you. If it was you're afraid to play, then
- 1:03I wouldn't have recruited you. So what was it about you and you the
- 1:07way you play? What did you do that made me want to recruit you?
- 1:12So whatever when they answer that question, when they say, coach it
- 1:17was this, then do that? Then be that person, be that player.
- 1:23And sometimes you know, when you put it like that, they go,
- 1:25Okay, that I don't have to be any different. I don't have
- 1:26to No, I just need you to be exactly what you were. So
- 1:33they've embraced that. I'm going to be what what I've always been. Then
- 1:38whatever I don't know, I'll learn later. I'll learn as I go.
- 1:42Now, I'm not going to worry about what if. I think that's the
- 1:45biggest thing that gets players in trouble is worrying about what if? Well,
- 1:49what if I do this and coach gets man? Yeah, well what about
- 1:53it? What if I say something and you get me? You think I
- 1:56worry about that? No, and you shouldn't either. Okay, So you
- 2:01know, Ash, why did I recruit you? Well? Because I can
- 2:06score, you know, I find ways to score, and I play really
- 2:09hard and I compete and on that. Okay, then do it? And
- 2:15KK, why did I recruit you? Well, you know, put pressure
- 2:19on the ball, you know, attack people, Okay, then do it.
- 2:24One thing surprised me about KK and Ash. Be honest with you,
- 2:29they're a little bit better three point shooting shooters than I thought they'd be.
- 2:32Q I thought was the best three point shooter coming out of the three of
- 2:36them. But KK surprised me and Ash even more so her willingness to shoot
- 2:42those threes and the fact that she shot She has shot such a high percentage.
- 2:47Yeah, and now, of course their rules are changed. I thought,
- 2:50you know, coming out, KK would probably have the biggest impact had
- 2:53this team been completely healthy, which obviously is in the case. But Ashland
- 2:57twenty threes on the season. But I like her mid range game. She's
- 3:00got a pretty good pull up around the around the elbows, starts, backs
- 3:02it up with the right hand ribble. The Indiana native goes to the right,
- 3:07spins left in the lane. The pull up is good, the same
- 3:13thing, and that's a you know, spread the floor. Let her go
- 3:15one on one and look as she's hit on the arm too. The future
- 3:19is so bright. She's got to wear shades. Ashlett was sixteen, Well,
- 3:23that was her. That was her thing in high school. Her thing
- 3:25wasn't shooting threes. It was the mid range game. You know, you
- 3:30talk to anybody in the country that recruited her or saw her play, and
- 3:34they would say, you know, who's got the best mid range game in
- 3:36the country, Ashton shape not even close. Nobody else is even second.
- 3:43And that's what I expected, and she she has that. I didn't expect
- 3:50her to be as confident a three point shooter as as she is and as
- 3:54good at it. But at the same time, and I think Nika said
- 3:59this yesterday, and Nika said, I'm making a lot of them because I
- 4:00have confidence in it, because I know the work I put in. She's
- 4:03put a lot of time into it. You olways sly Ashat here, you
- 4:08know, working on her game. And I don't know if you saw when
- 4:12we're coming through the building, KK was out there. So these kids put
- 4:16a lot of time into the game, and they should feel confident, no
- 4:19question, right. And they have a lot of time now because there's no
- 4:23class going on right now, and I imagine the freshman this is all new
- 4:26for them. Of course, we spent a week on the road, so
- 4:28they were able to keep busy with doing some events that we'll talk about in
- 4:30the next segment here, But now they get a lot of gym time.
- 4:32Now they can really work on their craft. Yeah, I mean to me,
- 4:39there's two things about you know, if anybody's listening, there's two things
- 4:42about going to college when you're on scholarship. One. Why are you here?
- 4:50Well, you're here because school's important. Okay, so that's priority number
- 4:57one. I have to do really well in school. Why also you here?
- 5:00Well here it came here to play basketball. Okay, that's two.
- 5:03What's the third reason you came here? Well, no, there is no
- 5:06third reason why you came here. You came here for those two things.
- 5:12So what else are you putting your time in if you're not spending the majority
- 5:15of your time on those two things. Well, when they can't answer that
- 5:19question, I go, well, then that's how this works. That's how
- 5:25you become really, really good at what you want to be good at.
- 5:29You came here to be a really good student, so you have to put
- 5:30the time. You came here to be a really good basketball player. You
- 5:33have to put the time. Whatever you think is third, fourth, or
- 5:36fifth, that doesn't factor into it until way after those two things are taken
- 5:43care of, and it seems he has worked well for them. By the
- 5:46way, how much grief did you give Ashland for two blocks on Sunday.
- 5:49I know CD had some fun with it on Sunday, but I mean the
- 5:55second one, I mean pretty easy. She kept her hands up and the
- 5:58shot just happened to be in a good butt to block the shot, and
- 6:00like she didn't try to go out of her way to block, and it
- 6:02was a decent block. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 6:04yeah. I don't count that as a block. That's an accidental that's the
- 6:10kid put the ball in your hands. You didn't block that shot. So
- 6:12let's not get carried away about you got two block shots. Don't give her
- 6:15any ideas, gotcha? Same thing with page one hundred percent with page all
- 6:21right, you speak spoke of Nika. Her game has She's been in control
- 6:27pretty good. She got a little away from her a little bit against creating
- 6:30at times, but she's taking care of the ball better. And yes,
- 6:32you can see the payoff with her working with that three point shot because you
- 6:36mentioned it. The dribble drive has given her opportunities to shoot the three and
- 6:41she managed to make four on Sunday. Yeah. Yeah, kids have to
- 6:47know, how are they going to play me? That's the one thing I
- 6:50keep stressing into our players. You have to know if we were if we
- 6:55were playing against you, how will we play you? If we were playing
- 6:59against our team, how would we guard our team? So if you know
- 7:03there's gonna be pressure on you, then you got to get better at handling
- 7:08pressure, what kind of pressure. Whatever the pressure is, pressure handling the
- 7:11ball, pressure cutting, pressure, getting open, pressure posting out, whatever
- 7:14the case may be. Pressure defending, you know, trying to defend really
- 7:17good plarts. What about an offense. Well, they're not gonna guard me
- 7:21because they think Paige and ash and easy they're gonna get. They're never gonna
- 7:27be open. So I'm I'm gonna be wide open. Okay, Well then
- 7:30that means they're either right or they're wrong. So if you stand there and
- 7:35you keep missing, then they're right and they're never gonna guard you. And
- 7:40if you start making them, they either have to change or you're gonna make
- 7:46them pay. That's it not that complicated, really. No final segment with
- 7:50Gino will preview Providence and talk about the DC trip a little bit. When
- 7:54we continue on the Yukon Sports Network from Larfield
