Transcript
- 0:02[SPEAKER_00]: Time for the 49ers Rush Podcast.
- 0:30[SPEAKER_00]: And here's your host, John Chapman.
- 0:35[SPEAKER_02]: What is going on faithful?
- 0:38[SPEAKER_02]: It is Thursday, which means it's time for the coach approach.
- 0:41[SPEAKER_02]: What's the means?
- 0:41[SPEAKER_02]: I am here with the handsome man himself, and from 49ers cut back, how are we doing my friend?
- 0:47[SPEAKER_01]: uh... we're doing great right in the middle of the offseason we know what the schedule is now uh... we're almost to the june one right date so we're gonna get some things post june one don't want to say on june one people come after you for saying that it's post june one so june seconds
- 1:02[SPEAKER_01]: I just want to make that clear so that we don't have any issues.
- 1:05[SPEAKER_01]: But yeah, stuff is going to be coming up, hopefully some conclusions to some brand and IU stuff, maybe the 49ers will make another signing when they free up some more money.
- 1:14[SPEAKER_01]: It could be interesting.
- 1:15[SPEAKER_01]: I'm really excited to see these guys get on the field and what they can do when they get out the training camp.
- 1:20[SPEAKER_01]: So I think the 49ers got a lot of tools that Kyle Shandyhands looking for to kind of using in plus.
- 1:25[SPEAKER_01]: There's so many players with upside.
- 1:28[SPEAKER_01]: let's see what they can do you know listen to a little bit your show last night with Larry and you guys are talking about you know the rookies and what they could be and i'm like who jaden dug very you know he's so much upside efficient price arc like i'm excited about the 49ers
- 1:41[SPEAKER_02]: It's it is funny you brought up post June one.
- 1:44[SPEAKER_02]: So everything kind of goes off this 4pm Eastern time slot for the NFL.
- 1:49[SPEAKER_02]: That's like the official start from us everything and there's going to be some changes like like there are changes just contractually one the 49 is use that post June
- 2:00[SPEAKER_02]: one contract language and a lot of the contracts that they do, void years, whatever else, like just the way that it works.
- 2:06[SPEAKER_02]: So there will be some change.
- 2:08[SPEAKER_02]: And the current 91 roster is not going to be the same throughout this offseason.
- 2:14[SPEAKER_02]: There's going to be some change.
- 2:15[SPEAKER_02]: I don't think there's going to be a lot of change.
- 2:17[SPEAKER_02]: I don't even think, Brandon, I used to get cut.
- 2:19[SPEAKER_02]: Like, I think that they are just going to just shrug their shoulders and just wait because he's not even technically on the roster
- 2:29[SPEAKER_02]: They don't have to make a decision.
- 2:31[SPEAKER_02]: They just get it kind of weight.
- 2:32[SPEAKER_02]: So I do think that there will be some change last turn over now.
- 2:37[SPEAKER_02]: One of the first topics that I have shout out to my man, Jared, as he asks his question.
- 2:41[SPEAKER_02]: If the 49ers decide to add a player, whether that's edge, offensive line tied in, safety, whatever, would they make this move prior to OTAs, or do they wait till post-June 1 or is it even further than that?
- 2:56[SPEAKER_02]: So you talked about the roster with this high upside, right?
- 3:00[SPEAKER_02]: Which I'm kind of under their impression, they want to see what they have first.
- 3:05[SPEAKER_02]: I do think additions will be made at some point for sure.
- 3:09[SPEAKER_02]: I don't think any additions are taking place any time soon personally.
- 3:13[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think they have to you know, and I think when you look at the veterans that they would at, especially with all the conversation about edge players, right, Joey Bosa, Jude Avion, Clowny, like these guys that are extreme, but they don't want to show up right now.
- 3:25[SPEAKER_01]: They don't want to be a part of the offseason workouts.
- 3:27[SPEAKER_01]: They don't want to be a part of many camp closer to training camp is where they want to show up.
- 3:32[SPEAKER_01]: And for most of them, probably after the first week of training camp, they want to show up.
- 3:37[SPEAKER_01]: I do think that the 49ers are going to be looking to add somebody possibly if things don't look good.
- 3:45[SPEAKER_01]: Now, if the guys that they have look good, they're going to wait this thing out.
- 3:48[SPEAKER_01]: But I think it's probably going to be a little bit further along, but you're right.
- 3:52[SPEAKER_01]: Every single year, there's a lot of roster movement, especially even in training camp.
- 3:56[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know how many times I was standing in line waiting for the boss and all of a sudden, there's another roster signing, another movement player getting moved on from.
- 4:02[SPEAKER_01]: So it's just going to happen.
- 4:04[SPEAKER_01]: It's just the way it is.
- 4:05[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, we're doing our 91 roster countdown series, which is so fun every year, but it's like, you know, we do all this work and then somebody gets cut and replace it.
- 4:14[SPEAKER_02]: It's like, well, you literally just like trash this whole section of work and then instituted another one.
- 4:21[SPEAKER_02]: And then like, let's say somebody gets cut that were already passed, right?
- 4:25[SPEAKER_02]: So now it's not a 91 series.
- 4:26[SPEAKER_02]: Now it's a 92 series.
- 4:28[SPEAKER_02]: Because you got it like you can't delete what happened to the past so it's always flooded like I like people getting new jobs But you can attach to these players even like back in roster guys where it's just like Man, I really wanted to see what this guy could do and you've got guys like Derek Cantine and Larry worth the third who are rookie try out guys that are still on this roster and it's like meritocracy still wins the day like whoever earns it It you know old grid iron whatever
- 4:57[SPEAKER_02]: But at some point, the cream rises to the crop, to the top.
- 5:02[SPEAKER_02]: I could do the macho man right now.
- 5:03[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, yeah, yeah, I love it.
- 5:07[SPEAKER_02]: And so talent wins the day.
- 5:09[SPEAKER_02]: There's no doubt about that.
- 5:11[SPEAKER_02]: But I do love what these back end of the roster guys bring.
- 5:15[SPEAKER_02]: And this contract, this season,
- 5:18[SPEAKER_02]: maybe a little bit more so than in the past because this roster is so much more competitive than what we've seen in the past two seasons.
- 5:27[SPEAKER_02]: I really don't think it's like a couple questions I have outlined for you today.
- 5:31[SPEAKER_02]: Like, to how the hell is this wide receiver we're going to shake out?
- 5:36[SPEAKER_02]: You're cutting some quality quality draft picks or players or people who have been paid like who's safe, who's not what that looks like.
- 5:45[SPEAKER_02]: And that doesn't even make room for undrafted free agents or priority free agents or longtime NFL vets that step up and you know earn their spot.
- 5:55[SPEAKER_02]: this offseason is going to be crazy because there are going to be some crazy roster moves.
- 5:59[SPEAKER_02]: We're always upset by one or two of them.
- 6:02[SPEAKER_02]: We're going to be upset by five or six of these roster moves whenever it comes down to cut down time.
- 6:06[SPEAKER_02]: So I don't know, are you struggling this offseason with like just getting clear pictures of what rooms are going to look like.
- 6:13[SPEAKER_02]: Position rooms are going to look like in the future.
- 6:15[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, you know, it's interesting.
- 6:16[SPEAKER_01]: I've been going through them.
- 6:17[SPEAKER_01]: That's one of the things I've been doing on my episode is kind of going through each for room and just talking the depth chart and I did wide receivers yesterday, and it was like when you got to a certain point, I think there were conversations about Ricky Pierce all and street bullying and Kirk, you know, maybe who's who plays more.
- 6:31[SPEAKER_01]: I think those are still not that hard to figure out.
- 6:34[SPEAKER_01]: But I thought once I got to like the Marcus Robinson and Jacob Cowling and Jordan Watkins, it was like holy cow, who exactly is ahead and how is this thing going to play out?
- 6:43[SPEAKER_01]: Because you got the upside right of the young guys who are 4-3 guys, you got Jacob Cowling, who plays in the slot can play as he, he's got a lot of ability and open space, and then you look over at some of the other guys, you got Jordan Watkins who can play X receiver, so that's a lot of value there.
- 6:58[SPEAKER_01]: But then there's the Marcus Robinson who's a vet that can play
- 7:02[SPEAKER_01]: You know, I seen Matt Barrows had said the Marcus Robinson was left out of his 53 man roster.
- 7:07[SPEAKER_01]: That's great.
- 7:07[SPEAKER_01]: I'm like, to me, I'm like, how like this dude is so good.
- 7:11[SPEAKER_01]: Kyle loves this guy.
- 7:12[SPEAKER_01]: He's good in the red zone.
- 7:13[SPEAKER_01]: I don't.
- 7:14[SPEAKER_01]: I don't really understand how you get there.
- 7:16[SPEAKER_02]: I was given the care he's got $2 million guaranteed dollars, which is way more than almost anybody else to that wide receiver room he's competing with.
- 7:23[SPEAKER_02]: He's got like three void years.
- 7:27[SPEAKER_01]: And I don't think they're moving on from, I think it comes down to counting and walk in there, you know, and whoever's best on special teams, but I think that that's a fun conversation because you're kind of getting, you know, different, I mean, you got meoko saying, Carver Willis is going to start, you got Matt Barrow saying the Marcus Robinson's on his way out, and I just think you look at this roster and
- 7:46[SPEAKER_01]: John, how lucky are we now to look at this roster compared to last year where everything was easy to figure out.
- 7:50[SPEAKER_01]: And now you look at it.
- 7:51[SPEAKER_01]: And you're like, this team is, is re-stacked, re-loaded, you know, I guess John Lynch said recalibrate last year, it's, it's stockpiled now.
- 7:59[SPEAKER_01]: They got talent all over the place except for maybe a couple of positions where they still have question marks.
- 8:03[SPEAKER_02]: Well, let's stick with this because your episode yesterday, and the wide receivers, let's just stick with this, and let's,
- 8:11[SPEAKER_02]: Okay, first question, they've kept five in the past, but sometimes they keep six wide receivers.
- 8:16[SPEAKER_02]: It seems like this is six wide receiver gear.
- 8:19[SPEAKER_02]: Would you agree with that?
- 8:20[SPEAKER_02]: Like, would you, if you had a bet right now, five or six that they keep on the initial 53.
- 8:29[SPEAKER_01]: It's going to be six and I will leave out a wild card that it's seven, knowing Kyle Shanian.
- 8:35[SPEAKER_01]: It was just a couple years ago, he went seven and I know that they've got to figure out the roster, they've got to figure out how to have three quarterbacks this year.
- 8:42[SPEAKER_01]: They've got all these offensive linemen.
- 8:44[SPEAKER_01]: but make no mistake.
- 8:45[SPEAKER_01]: If they are keeping one less tight end, which I think they might, if George Kittle starts on the populist, there's a chance, I think it's gonna be six, but there is a chance that they could go seven and then try to figure out how someone gets to the I.R.
- 8:58[SPEAKER_01]: Something like that, after the 53 man roster initially comes through, they always do this with veterans too.
- 9:03[SPEAKER_01]: You always talk about the handshake deals.
- 9:05[SPEAKER_01]: Hey, we'll see you down the line in a day or so, if you come in with kick you an extra nickel or so.
- 9:10[SPEAKER_01]: So, I think that that could happen,
- 9:14[SPEAKER_02]: Okay.
- 9:15[SPEAKER_02]: I want to play a game.
- 9:16[SPEAKER_02]: It has had no time to prepare for this.
- 9:18[SPEAKER_02]: So let's grant him some grace.
- 9:21[SPEAKER_02]: This is all me, my wrongdoing.
- 9:23[SPEAKER_02]: I want a percentage.
- 9:24[SPEAKER_02]: We're going to go through each wide receiver.
- 9:27[SPEAKER_02]: And I want you to give me a percentage that you think off the just off the cuff.
- 9:31[SPEAKER_02]: Of if they will make the 53 man roster.
- 9:33[SPEAKER_02]: Okay.
- 9:34[SPEAKER_02]: So we'll start easy.
- 9:35[SPEAKER_02]: My Kevin's 100%.
- 9:36[SPEAKER_01]: 100% 100%.
- 9:42[SPEAKER_01]: 100%.
- 9:43[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, Christian Kirk 100%.
- 9:45[SPEAKER_01]: 100%.
- 9:46[SPEAKER_01]: 100% it.
- 9:48[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I'm going to point something guaranteed.
- 9:52[SPEAKER_01]: I just think that yeah, I just think that he's the insurance policy in case Ricky Pierce Saul's not ready to go.
- 9:58[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 9:58[SPEAKER_01]: Our Pierce Saul's heard or something.
- 9:59[SPEAKER_01]: You just plug Christian Kirk and he's good to go.
- 10:01[SPEAKER_01]: So yeah, 100%.
- 10:03[SPEAKER_02]: All right, to Marcus Robinson.
- 10:06[SPEAKER_01]: 33%.
- 10:06[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 10:09[SPEAKER_01]: Whoa.
- 10:09[SPEAKER_01]: So you're
- 10:11[SPEAKER_01]: say he ain't going to make it.
- 10:13[SPEAKER_01]: I think he's in the competition.
- 10:15[SPEAKER_01]: I do.
- 10:15[SPEAKER_01]: I'm 33% I'm going to
- 10:20[SPEAKER_01]: I would, I would normally say that I think that it's a higher rate.
- 10:23[SPEAKER_01]: I would probably put it like 60%, but I think there is some belief that walkkins and cowling, if they could show up, could make it difficult for the Marcus Robinson, because the Marcus Robinson you have under contract for one year and would Jacob Cowling and Jordan walkkins for walkkins or three years for Cowling, there's two more and I, I get there's going to be a lot of cash.
- 10:43[SPEAKER_02]: I don't think last year, crude for Cowling, did it?
- 10:46[SPEAKER_02]: I don't think it did.
- 10:49[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, so like I think you got both of them over three years because Coward never made the active roster once.
- 10:55[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, did he?
- 10:56[SPEAKER_02]: Am I wrong there?
- 10:57[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think they did.
- 10:59[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I think they carried him right to the 53 and then they put him on the IR.
- 11:03[SPEAKER_01]: I believe is what they did.
- 11:05[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 11:06[SPEAKER_01]: Yes.
- 11:07[SPEAKER_02]: Hold mess.
- 11:07[SPEAKER_02]: Hold mess.
- 11:08[SPEAKER_02]: Okay.
- 11:08[SPEAKER_02]: Well, all right.
- 11:09[SPEAKER_02]: 33.
- 11:10[SPEAKER_02]: That is a shocker.
- 11:11[SPEAKER_02]: I'm cutting this clip.
- 11:12[SPEAKER_02]: I'm just telling you right now.
- 11:14[SPEAKER_02]: I'm going to tag Matt Peros, shout out a friend of the show, Matt Peros.
- 11:17[SPEAKER_02]: Jordan Walkets, what percentage do you got to put on him?
- 11:20[SPEAKER_01]: 33 percent.
- 11:22[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, I see what you're doing here.
- 11:24[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 11:24[SPEAKER_01]: Jacob Coward.
- 11:26[SPEAKER_01]: 33 percent.
- 11:26[SPEAKER_02]: Damn you.
- 11:27[SPEAKER_02]: And your rationale of making sense.
- 11:31[SPEAKER_02]: No way.
- 11:32[SPEAKER_02]: So you're not even going to give a slide advantage to any three of these.
- 11:36[SPEAKER_01]: I think if from a coaching standpoint, I would naturally give the Marcus Robinson an advantage because he's going to come in, know the system, he's a veteran, and knows everything to do.
- 11:46[SPEAKER_01]: The other guys have been proven anything.
- 11:48[SPEAKER_01]: But I think from a roster building point of view, a holistic view, you have to take you to account.
- 11:52[SPEAKER_01]: These two guys are going to help on special teams.
- 11:55[SPEAKER_01]: They're young and they're 4-3 speed guys.
- 11:56[SPEAKER_01]: So these are people that the footage have invested in.
- 11:59[SPEAKER_01]: And the Marcus Robinson might be here next year.
- 12:01[SPEAKER_01]: He might not.
- 12:02[SPEAKER_01]: The other two.
- 12:03[SPEAKER_01]: They could be here.
- 12:04[SPEAKER_01]: So when looking at it that way, I think that's where I get that thought process.
- 12:07[SPEAKER_01]: If you're talking best player, the Marcus Robinson right now is the best player.
- 12:11[SPEAKER_01]: It's not close.
- 12:12[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I agree so like do you want now or do you want the future?
- 12:15[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, you got you every every single free agency Siding says screams It's now now is the time But you got a balance set somehow.
- 12:24[SPEAKER_02]: What's up, Rusty?
- 12:25[SPEAKER_02]: Glad to see you here brother glad to see you here.
- 12:26[SPEAKER_02]: Okay.
- 12:27[SPEAKER_02]: Wow.
- 12:27[SPEAKER_02]: That's crazy Let's go with the Malik Turner.
- 12:31[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, do you think that there's any chance ultimate special teams blocker plays all three spots?
- 12:37[SPEAKER_01]: No, I don't think so.
- 12:37[SPEAKER_01]: I think he's going to be a practice squad potential guy
- 12:41[SPEAKER_02]: Well, somebody has to have it.
- 12:42[SPEAKER_02]: Okay, what about Wesley Grimes or Will Pauling?
- 12:45[SPEAKER_02]: Just tell me what's one has a better chance just out of those two.
- 12:47[SPEAKER_02]: The two priority free agents.
- 12:49[SPEAKER_01]: I'm gonna go Wesley Grimes.
- 12:50[SPEAKER_01]: I think you got the size and athleticism to go with it.
- 12:53[SPEAKER_01]: So I'm gonna say Wesley Grimes.
- 12:55[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, man, that's crazy talk, man.
- 12:57[SPEAKER_02]: And, dude, that is, I've shocked with the 33% man, that is, all right, all right, I like it.
- 13:05[SPEAKER_02]: I like it.
- 13:06[SPEAKER_02]: Right here, C best is they're gonna run
- 13:11[SPEAKER_02]: Well, Kyle Shedney, it's never ran a four wide receiver set since he's been here.
- 13:15[SPEAKER_02]: Not one time.
- 13:16[SPEAKER_02]: Do you think it's time?
- 13:17[SPEAKER_02]: Do you think it's, I don't think he's going to.
- 13:20[SPEAKER_01]: I called for it.
- 13:21[SPEAKER_01]: I think it was a couple of years ago that I called for it, right when they got Ricky Pierce on him like, hey, they could go to some four wide receiver sets, starting getting all the, you know, the thoughts of Mike Coleman Grinney in my head from 1989, it's like, hey, they're getting way too much pressure.
- 13:33[SPEAKER_01]: Let's just spread them out, four wide receivers.
- 13:36[SPEAKER_01]: I think there's always a possibility.
- 13:37[SPEAKER_01]: I think that George Kittle being out could force their hand a little bit, but I still think Kyle Shannon will put Jake Conjus out there.
- 13:46[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know exactly what it's going to take.
- 13:48[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe it's the Seattle defense, the way that it's currently built.
- 13:51[SPEAKER_01]: uh... would make him in worry you know playing that big nickel maybe they do want to find some looks uh... that matches up my kevin's on on the can and worry or you know somebody that could put some real pressure because it's good as him and worry is he's not a corner he's a really good safety and so uh... getting him in matchups where he can lose in space i think is is going to be something that for you as look for because right now they believe they've neutralized the advantage of how you check
- 14:15[SPEAKER_01]: having a nickname and worry out there.
- 14:17[SPEAKER_01]: They think that he's the use check of the defense and so they believe now that the 49ers 21 personnel can't be as effective So what is Kyle Shanty hand dude to counter that while you get a lot of speed that's another reason why Jacob Cowling and Jordan walkins are in the mix
- 14:31[SPEAKER_01]: with dribbling.
- 14:31[SPEAKER_01]: Those guys are all speed guys.
- 14:33[SPEAKER_01]: You could threaten people vertically.
- 14:35[SPEAKER_01]: And that puts Nick him in worry.
- 14:36[SPEAKER_01]: I know he's super fast, but turning and running with those hips with those wide receivers is a lot more difficult than people think.
- 14:42[SPEAKER_01]: So just because he's forth three straight line, don't mean he's going to be able to run with those guys when they're running their routes.
- 14:47[SPEAKER_02]: And yeah, I remember Kyle Shedahan whenever he was on the Super Bowl like pre coverage right and he was talking about sales defense and he's like, if you can't force them out of that shell, like you have to force them to come up and stop the run game and if you can't do that then you're in trouble, the 49ers were not able to do that and those two late season matchups, you know, we get teen and then the divisional round where they got blown out like that was the issue.
- 15:15[SPEAKER_02]: And, man, I had natural segue here, the title of the show, at least I'm buying a 49er transition in into a passive offense.
- 15:24[SPEAKER_02]: This is kind of what I want to talk about.
- 15:26[SPEAKER_02]: Last year, the 49er's through the ball, 574 times.
- 15:29[SPEAKER_02]: That was a 64% from how much they threw the ball in 2024, which was 349 times.
- 15:33[SPEAKER_02]: So over 225 more pass attempts.
- 15:41[SPEAKER_02]: Then you look at the offseason, they add not one, not two, not three, but five brand new wide receivers.
- 15:48[SPEAKER_02]: And I also want to throw in the lack of running game.
- 15:51[SPEAKER_02]: Last year, 3.8 yards per carry, ranked 30th in the NFL by far the worst ever in the Kyle Shadowhand era.
- 15:59[SPEAKER_02]: So my question are the 49ers going to transition into more of a past heavy offense moving forward.
- 16:06[SPEAKER_02]: Does this
- 16:10[SPEAKER_02]: It's got to be another 550 pass-it-tint season where the 49ers are throwing the ball way more than the running it.
- 16:19[SPEAKER_01]: I think so, it depends on situational, you know, the games, how things are going if they're playing from in front or behind.
- 16:25[SPEAKER_01]: I think if they're playing in the front, they're going to try to lean on the running game a little bit.
- 16:29[SPEAKER_01]: They're still investing in that running game with draft picks, Jordan James, Yokeil and Black.
- 16:33[SPEAKER_01]: So they're still doing that.
- 16:34[SPEAKER_01]: They're trying to find the answers along the offensive line.
- 16:37[SPEAKER_01]: But I do believe that early on in the season, I think a lot of teams are going to do the same things that they're trying to do.
- 16:42[SPEAKER_01]: They're going to force the 49ers to prove that they can run the ball consistently and for the 49ers that might be, hey, let's throw the ball.
- 16:49[SPEAKER_01]: Let's get these guys to back up.
- 16:51[SPEAKER_01]: They need to put some pressure on these safeties and these defenses that are trying to crowd the line of scrimmage and just allow the allow this offense to kind of take off, you know, the stat came out.
- 17:00[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, they broke pretty, you know, one of the best deep throwers as far as accuracy.
- 17:04[SPEAKER_01]: We all knew that.
- 17:05[SPEAKER_01]: And so if you have opportunities you add Mike Evans, you add just on dribbling guys, you can get vertical, even Christian Kirk does it pretty consistently all the sudden now you get those safeties to back up you get the defense to play a little bit more vertical than horizontal and then you can start finding some avenues to get players to football down the field so I think that that will really help the running game so I wouldn't be shocked if it looks a little lopsided early in the season where the 49ers are relying on the passing game a lot more.
- 17:32[SPEAKER_01]: to open things up, and then eventually as defense is start settling into worrying about the 49ers passing attack, the run game starts taking off.
- 17:40[SPEAKER_01]: That will also allow some continuity with this offensive line to kind of get together and get some things going.
- 17:45[SPEAKER_01]: So I think it could balance out a little bit, but I do believe it's going to be more pass heavy over the whole season compared to what it has been in the past where they've really leaned on the run game, just because of some of the looks they're going to get from defenses.
- 17:59[SPEAKER_02]: The run game was a mess all of last year.
- 18:01[SPEAKER_02]: I remember we were at the Giants game, which was one of the best run games of the year.
- 18:06[SPEAKER_02]: A lot of that was because Jake Prendo wasn't playing, but I was getting heckled from Giants fans in the stadium at that life.
- 18:14[SPEAKER_02]: They're like, oh, what is Christian McAfrey now at 2.8 yards per carry.
- 18:17[SPEAKER_02]: like every single time after like he had a decent run and actually turned out upfront with these guys and we still text all the time, but they were awesome.
- 18:24[SPEAKER_02]: The best of the freaking East Coast fans are awful, but the good ones are the best ones.
- 18:30[SPEAKER_02]: I will say that.
- 18:31[SPEAKER_02]: Now, will the run game improve?
- 18:35[SPEAKER_02]: If I set the over-under at 4.1 yards per rush attempt, which is the second worst in Kyle Shattie hints to hit you with the 40 yards.
- 18:48[SPEAKER_02]: If I said 4.1 yards per carry on the year, over under or push, like where do you see that?
- 18:57[SPEAKER_01]: I think it's going to end up being over.
- 18:58[SPEAKER_01]: I think it's going to settle over because of the weapons that they've added and some of the looks that they're going to give.
- 19:04[SPEAKER_01]: I think they're going to give them some more 11 personnel and try to get some big bodies on some of these smaller nickel corners and take advantage of some of those matchups.
- 19:13[SPEAKER_01]: I think that you're going to see a more creative run game this year.
- 19:16[SPEAKER_01]: I think that they really are going to lead into that.
- 19:18[SPEAKER_01]: So I think that it's going to go over.
- 19:20[SPEAKER_01]: I think last year definitely didn't work out.
- 19:21[SPEAKER_01]: But I think they're going to find stability.
- 19:23[SPEAKER_01]: They've added at least a lot of pieces along the offensive line that you expect.
- 19:27[SPEAKER_01]: One of those guys to kind of hit.
- 19:28[SPEAKER_01]: at the guard position and kind of revitalize this run game a little bit.
- 19:32[SPEAKER_01]: They got to get some pushed up front who need being healthy will be big.
- 19:36[SPEAKER_01]: I think Trent Williams being healthy will will help him have in a full training camp as well.
- 19:39[SPEAKER_01]: We'll always be good.
- 19:41[SPEAKER_01]: So I do think that it's going to take a step up.
- 19:42[SPEAKER_01]: I'm not saying it's going to go up a big margin, but I think a little bit it definitely will.
- 19:47[SPEAKER_01]: And I think as a season goes on, I think this run game is going to get better and better because I do think they'll get into a rhythm with Jordan James and Katelyn
- 19:56[SPEAKER_01]: and kind of taking a little bit of the load off of Christian McAfrey.
- 19:59[SPEAKER_02]: I like that.
- 20:01[SPEAKER_02]: The guard position is going to be key.
- 20:05[SPEAKER_02]: You had Bid Barts, you had, you know, Burford, you had getting a solid run presence there.
- 20:11[SPEAKER_02]: Now, can Robert Jones do that.
- 20:12[SPEAKER_02]: I think Connor Cole became, and I think that's kind of where he excels and then the Carver Willis love that has come across, you know, all of social media right now.
- 20:21[SPEAKER_02]: He's great in the run game.
- 20:23[SPEAKER_02]: that the problem with Carver Willis is, man, that past pro is inconsistent at best that he's never played inside.
- 20:29[SPEAKER_02]: His anchor is inconsistent at best.
- 20:32[SPEAKER_02]: Never played inside.
- 20:33[SPEAKER_02]: And what that looks like scares me a little bit.
- 20:35[SPEAKER_02]: Shout out to Rusty in the chat.
- 20:36[SPEAKER_02]: He says those G-Men fans were great chance fans too.
- 20:40[SPEAKER_02]: Man, we had a good time up there.
- 20:41[SPEAKER_02]: There's no doubt about that now right here.
- 20:45[SPEAKER_02]: Shout out to my big Kimbero in the super chat.
- 20:46[SPEAKER_02]: He's the best of the best.
- 20:48[SPEAKER_02]: I love this.
- 20:48[SPEAKER_02]: Thank you, man.
- 20:49[SPEAKER_02]: For your generosity and just support all the time.
- 20:51[SPEAKER_02]: Dude.
- 20:52[SPEAKER_02]: Kimbero's just quality quality dude.
- 20:55[SPEAKER_02]: He says I agree with the speed being a problem for opposing defenses makes me think that a peer saw stays healthy.
- 21:02[SPEAKER_02]: He's going to have a big year due to the lack of attention.
- 21:07[SPEAKER_02]: Talk to me about Ricky Pearsaw, and what he has to gain with the addition of Evans Stribbling Kirk, how that benefits him compared to last year, JJ Joachini's awesome.
- 21:23[SPEAKER_02]: A threat downfield he is not nor has he ever been.
- 21:27[SPEAKER_02]: So how do you see Ricky Pearsaw just this year with the complimentary pieces of the
- 21:34[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I mean, we've seen Kyle Shenan's offense.
- 21:36[SPEAKER_01]: You know, and everyone can remember Debo screaming across the middle on these, these dig routes coming across and making these catches and getting these actually yards.
- 21:44[SPEAKER_01]: And we've seen it a couple of times from Pierce all the last year, but he wasn't able to finish.
- 21:48[SPEAKER_01]: He's not really got the home run speed.
- 21:50[SPEAKER_01]: But those are the types of things that Kyle Shenan wants in his offense, but defenses have been able to kind of sit on those.
- 21:56[SPEAKER_01]: Number one, they brought their safety's up because they didn't worry about Joanne Jennings.
- 21:59[SPEAKER_01]: They didn't worry about anyone going vertical over the top.
- 22:02[SPEAKER_01]: They didn't really treat any of those through routes as you know danger to them.
- 22:06[SPEAKER_01]: So they were kind of just chilling and then they would also just rotate one of those guys into that that position to take away the deep dig right there with that Look, look position.
- 22:15[SPEAKER_02]: So yes, like that and
- 22:17[SPEAKER_02]: Sorry, I'm sorry.
- 22:17[SPEAKER_02]: I got it right here because I think one of the things in the Kirk cousins interview.
- 22:21[SPEAKER_02]: I don't know if you saw that where he talked about he's like, you know, used to you just okay single high double.
- 22:26[SPEAKER_02]: I single high double high and at the snap you would know he's like what Seattle might make Donald's doing that's different is they give you a double high safety look and at the snap they sit for account
- 22:37[SPEAKER_02]: and then rotate into that down area so that then that safety rotates down to take away the dig or whatever else because there's no deep look and so they take away they give you that too high look for the first count so you're having to make a read pre-snap and then you're going to have to make a read post snap because they're delaying giving you the read this is the new NFL.
- 23:02[SPEAKER_02]: And so it's not as simple as two high single high at the snap that's going to give us our read no there's pre reads snap and then there's post reads snap it's Seattle is confusing quarterbacks because of that now when they play the 49ers they give that two high shell and so it's like up can't take off the top and then they rotate.
- 23:20[SPEAKER_02]: it take away the dig.
- 23:21[SPEAKER_02]: So they're getting the best of both worlds.
- 23:24[SPEAKER_02]: And so now sorry for the root interruption.
- 23:27[SPEAKER_02]: I'm terrible at that.
- 23:29[SPEAKER_02]: Keep doing what you're doing because I agree with you and this is the problem.
- 23:34[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, no, you're spot on.
- 23:35[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, that's exactly what Mike McDonald's defense was doing.
- 23:38[SPEAKER_01]: And that's what teams were doing to the 49ers.
- 23:40[SPEAKER_01]: And that's why they could constrict the running game, because they were sitting on those plays underneath, but they were also taking away those deep processors.
- 23:47[SPEAKER_01]: The Kyle Shadehand staples were being taken away because the way defense is available to play against this offense.
- 23:53[SPEAKER_01]: So getting speed is one of the main objectives for the 49ers offseason.
- 23:57[SPEAKER_01]: That's why getting a guy like dribbling that has that fourth three speed.
- 24:00[SPEAKER_01]: Well, guess what, now if he's an inside receiver
- 24:04[SPEAKER_01]: and those safeties are sitting flatfoot in the middle of the field.
- 24:06[SPEAKER_01]: They're waiting half a tick.
- 24:07[SPEAKER_01]: He runs right by him and you see these big explosive plays down the field.
- 24:11[SPEAKER_01]: So just getting those safeties to back up two or three yards is going to open up those dig routes, you know, four Ricky Pierce saw across the middle.
- 24:18[SPEAKER_01]: That's going to be a big place for him.
- 24:20[SPEAKER_01]: But also some of those vertical routes where they take a chance underneath and you have something deep down the field.
- 24:25[SPEAKER_01]: So Mike Evans is going to be a presence because you have to take him seriously.
- 24:29[SPEAKER_01]: You put him one
- 24:32[SPEAKER_01]: He's also got sneaky speed where he can still get over the top and stack these corners.
- 24:36[SPEAKER_01]: You got strivling that adds to speed, Christian Kirk is really good at finding open lanes and places to sit down.
- 24:42[SPEAKER_01]: And so I think all these guys in totality help Ricky Pierce saw his game and I look for there to be space for him over the middle of the field.
- 24:49[SPEAKER_01]: Once they establish, they have to establish it that they can win vertical.
- 24:53[SPEAKER_01]: Once they do and they stretch this field vertical, then Kyle Shinn and takes advantage of them horizontally because then they start giving space and that's what he wants to do with Ricky Pierce.
- 25:02[SPEAKER_02]: You got to get everything uncluttered in the middle of the field.
- 25:04[SPEAKER_02]: That's where Brock parties just so dangerous.
- 25:07[SPEAKER_02]: How do you do that?
- 25:08[SPEAKER_02]: You got to stretch the field vertically outside by the numbers.
- 25:11[SPEAKER_02]: You do that.
- 25:12[SPEAKER_02]: They have to have a safety or corner over the top.
- 25:14[SPEAKER_02]: That opens perimeter, run game, digs.
- 25:17[SPEAKER_02]: Everything is now open.
- 25:19[SPEAKER_02]: But whenever, and this has been the problem, you'd lost those last year.
- 25:24[SPEAKER_02]: And whenever you never had that, that's where it got to trouble.
- 25:28[SPEAKER_02]: And shout out to Logan.
- 25:31[SPEAKER_02]: We're not good at being a one dimensional team and here's one of my favorite clips from George Kittle.
- 25:38[SPEAKER_02]: If it plays and I've been a one dimensional football team isn't very good.
- 25:43[SPEAKER_02]: That's how things were.
- 25:45[SPEAKER_02]: That clips for three years ago.
- 25:48[SPEAKER_02]: I'm not so sure and I don't think I'm suggesting the 49ers become a one dimensional football team.
- 26:02[SPEAKER_02]: They were top 10 and pass the tips.
- 26:06[SPEAKER_02]: They're throw in the ball.
- 26:07[SPEAKER_02]: I think that this is going to continue.
- 26:10[SPEAKER_02]: And whenever you're having such like this is the difference between Brock Party and Jimmy Garoppolo.
- 26:16[SPEAKER_02]: I don't know if I want to say a different sweet Brock party and Mac Jones.
- 26:20[SPEAKER_02]: But the explosives come at a different speed when Brock party is your quarterback.
- 26:27[SPEAKER_02]: like you can talk about lack of arm strength, you can talk about how small it is or whatever.
- 26:32[SPEAKER_02]: I don't care.
- 26:33[SPEAKER_02]: Explosives is what Brock pretty does.
- 26:35[SPEAKER_02]: The dude is a greedy SOP and I mean that and the kindest, most positive way possible.
- 26:41[SPEAKER_02]: That dude goes for the jugular.
- 26:43[SPEAKER_02]: And even in the Seattle Seahawks game where they got blown out, I don't think that he had a bad game.
- 26:49[SPEAKER_02]: He was just playing by himself.
- 26:52[SPEAKER_02]: Rick appears on zero catches on 40 plus snaps couldn't run the ball.
- 26:56[SPEAKER_02]: Nobody was catching the ball.
- 26:57[SPEAKER_02]: There were times where he would go to throw it to a wide open, Luke Titan whatever you want to say, and pull the ball down and then start scrambling because he's like, I can't throw it to stone hands.
- 27:08[SPEAKER_02]: Like that dude was out there by himself against one of the best defenses.
- 27:12[SPEAKER_02]: I argue the second best defense of the NFL behind only Texans.
- 27:15[SPEAKER_02]: Hopefully they take a couple steps back this year, but I don't know.
- 27:19[SPEAKER_02]: I just, whenever I see the moves that this front office and coaching staff have made this offseason, it really does seem to suggest they're going through the air much more than what we're used to seeing in hand.
- 27:35[SPEAKER_01]: It definitely could, and I think this could be a direct correlation to what Seattle did defensively, right?
- 27:41[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, one of the first things that you got to do is you got to beat the teams that you're going to be playing twice a year.
- 27:46[SPEAKER_01]: So you look at the Rams.
- 27:47[SPEAKER_01]: You look at the C-Ox.
- 27:48[SPEAKER_01]: What do we got to do to beat those teams right now?
- 27:50[SPEAKER_01]: Arizona is in a complete rebuilding phase.
- 27:52[SPEAKER_01]: So you don't really have to worry about them as much, but you have to figure out how to overcome Seattle.
- 27:56[SPEAKER_01]: That's the first obstacle.
- 27:57[SPEAKER_01]: How do we do that?
- 27:59[SPEAKER_01]: And one of the ways that you do that is you make it difficult for them to do what they want to do well.
- 28:04[SPEAKER_01]: And you can't just line up with the 21 personality more and load up and run the ball because they do have Nicki Minaj.
- 28:10[SPEAKER_01]: And even if you go back to week one last year when Emin worry got hurt.
- 28:14[SPEAKER_01]: That's when the 49ers were able to kind of get their offense rolling a little bit.
- 28:17[SPEAKER_01]: He got hurt early in that game, but you could see him filling in the hole.
- 28:20[SPEAKER_01]: He's a difference maker.
- 28:22[SPEAKER_01]: So how do you neutralize that?
- 28:23[SPEAKER_01]: Well, we're going to spread you out a little bit.
- 28:25[SPEAKER_01]: We're going to get more speed on the field.
- 28:27[SPEAKER_01]: And we're going to make it more difficult for you in those cases.
- 28:29[SPEAKER_01]: But also,
- 28:30[SPEAKER_01]: We believe that we can get a match up that we like in the passing game, but in the running game.
- 28:34[SPEAKER_01]: And I wonder how many times we're going to see Christian McAfrey this year.
- 28:38[SPEAKER_01]: I know he hasn't done it a lot in San Francisco.
- 28:40[SPEAKER_01]: Running single back looks.
- 28:41[SPEAKER_01]: I think there could be some opportunities for the 49ers to run him.
- 28:44[SPEAKER_01]: It's some single back looks to get some different variants to this running game.
- 28:48[SPEAKER_01]: And I think that that could be something interesting to add on top of the, what they're already going to kind of change up offensively.
- 28:54[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, 11 personnel.
- 29:00[SPEAKER_02]: It's Luke Feral, I'm out.
- 29:02[SPEAKER_02]: I'm like, I'm done, I'm done.
- 29:05[SPEAKER_02]: Now we don't see 20% out either.
- 29:08[SPEAKER_02]: Like no Titans, excuse me, but Kyle, you check and see if he's back there.
- 29:13[SPEAKER_02]: I'm cool with that.
- 29:14[SPEAKER_02]: And I understand a lot of people talk about how juice is basically a Titan's.
- 29:19[SPEAKER_02]: I get that, but not necessarily, because they don't use them the same way.
- 29:23[SPEAKER_02]: Sometimes he does similar things,
- 29:26[SPEAKER_02]: And I love Kyle use check and I think he's coming off one of his best seasons of his entire career like I think he's been awesome.
- 29:34[SPEAKER_02]: But I think you want to keep him at that kind of 20 to 25 snaps a game.
- 29:38[SPEAKER_02]: Whenever you go back to 20 to 24 tape and he was playing 40 to 45 snaps a game.
- 29:43[SPEAKER_02]: You saw like, okay, the efficiency is out.
- 29:46[SPEAKER_02]: The consistency is out like it just was not beneficial to the offense.
- 29:51[SPEAKER_02]: So I am curious kind of to see what that'll look like because something's got to change with kiddo layout.
- 29:57[SPEAKER_02]: And kiddo will be out for several games.
- 29:59[SPEAKER_02]: Like, I get that everybody's like, yeah, kiddo's going to be back week one.
- 30:02[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, this is fun.
- 30:05[SPEAKER_02]: I'm not so sure on that.
- 30:06[SPEAKER_02]: They're like, do you think kiddo plays week three?
- 30:11[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think we see Kittle for the first four games.
- 30:14[SPEAKER_01]: I think he's going to be out.
- 30:16[SPEAKER_01]: I think that they'll, you know, after that, they'll reassess, but this is one of those things where you're playing the long game, right?
- 30:21[SPEAKER_01]: You've, you've got to have Kittle for the stretch run, you've got to have him for where you think you're going to go make them a mistake.
- 30:26[SPEAKER_01]: This roster, this team, they think that they are Super Bowl containers.
- 30:29[SPEAKER_01]: They think that they are going to.
- 30:30[SPEAKER_01]: Razalum party trophy and February.
- 30:32[SPEAKER_01]: That's their whole entire goal.
- 30:34[SPEAKER_01]: It's not to win the first four games.
- 30:36[SPEAKER_01]: They want to win them, but that's not the most important.
- 30:38[SPEAKER_01]: The most important is to win at the end.
- 30:39[SPEAKER_01]: So I think they're going to work him in.
- 30:41[SPEAKER_01]: That's why I think they're going to carry two tight ends early on in the 53 man roster.
- 30:45[SPEAKER_01]: And then I think they'll probably elevate somebody for game dead.
- 30:49[SPEAKER_01]: I think that that's going to be the plan.
- 30:50[SPEAKER_01]: And that's why going to more wide receivers a different type of look early on in the season is going to be beneficial for
- 31:00[SPEAKER_01]: expect kiddo i mean he could come back maybe when they play Seattle the first time i think it's probably more realistic that's a little bit later than that uh but i i think that right now the 49ers know that there's life without kiddo for the beginning parts of the season i think that's why it was important to get the wide receivers and guys that can make plays in space
- 31:17[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, and hopefully I like this from Logan Khalil Dinkens, like if there's one guy that I could say, like I wish he dominated and earned a spot, it'd be Khalil Dinkens like that tied in room and that safety room.
- 31:31[SPEAKER_02]: which we got a comment we're going to get to about the safety room here in a little bit.
- 31:34[SPEAKER_02]: But if you're going to any game this season you got to come Party with us 49ers rush road trip dot com 49ers rush road trip is going into its sixth year with over 40 events at road games If you are traveling to see the 49ers play this year you got to come party with us and on top of that

- 32:30[SPEAKER_02]: We got you covered 49ers rushroadtrip.com.
- 32:39[SPEAKER_02]: All right, let's flip it to the defensive side of the ball.
- 32:43[SPEAKER_02]: We have dominated offensive programming today.
- 32:47[SPEAKER_02]: Offensive sales tickets.
- 32:48[SPEAKER_02]: It's what it is.
- 32:48[SPEAKER_02]: Chicks dig the long ball anyway.
- 32:51[SPEAKER_02]: It ain't nineers.
- 32:53[SPEAKER_02]: He says, I know you aren't big on Gyer Brown.
- 32:57[SPEAKER_02]: Another content creator I follow says Brown's better than he gets credit for.
- 33:01[SPEAKER_02]: A lot of time he looks bad trying to make up for Moostafa.
- 33:05[SPEAKER_02]: What do you think here, love the question, love the dialogue, and let me just say this whenever we go into what I don't like being a negative on player's period.
- 33:17[SPEAKER_02]: But disagreements are a great thing.
- 33:19[SPEAKER_02]: And having different perspectives is not a negative.
- 33:23[SPEAKER_02]: And having this dialogue can be a positive.
- 33:26[SPEAKER_02]: And
- 33:27[SPEAKER_02]: the goal.
- 33:28[SPEAKER_02]: My goal is not to convince you one way or another.
- 33:31[SPEAKER_02]: My goal is to watch the tape and just say what I see consistently.
- 33:34[SPEAKER_02]: Like that's how I see things.
- 33:37[SPEAKER_02]: So, and how do you respond to questions like this?
- 33:41[SPEAKER_02]: Shout out to NIH Niners.
- 33:42[SPEAKER_02]: Wonderful question.
- 33:44[SPEAKER_02]: What's your approach here?
- 33:46[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I think that there's different perspectives, you know, people see things differently.
- 33:49[SPEAKER_01]: I would say that there's too much inconsistency with Jair Brown and a Jair Brown misses tackles.
- 33:55[SPEAKER_01]: He takes bad angles.
- 33:56[SPEAKER_01]: He does those sorts of things.
- 33:57[SPEAKER_01]: He also has some miss haps and coverage.
- 33:59[SPEAKER_01]: But I mean, the truth is, Malik Mustafa didn't have the best season either.
- 34:03[SPEAKER_01]: I think a lot of that was he came in late.
- 34:05[SPEAKER_01]: It was coming off the ACL.
- 34:06[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think that he was
- 34:07[SPEAKER_01]: You'll really ready to roll, but there was a communication problem as well at the back in, you know, we talked about this a little bit last week, is they just don't communicate well, and that's why you see some of the confusion in some of the mistakes, but, uh, Jair Brown, he made mistakes, and I think that that has been clear and evident, I think that he's got to get a lot better, I think Malik Mustafa knows he's got to play better than he did last year, and then Marky Siegel, the same thing, he's got to finish plays,
- 34:32[SPEAKER_01]: And so I think that there's a lot of, you know, blame that could go around for that position in general, and I think that they, they need all those guys to play better, but no, I don't think Jair Brown is just getting a bad rap because he was covering for Malach Mustafa.
- 34:46[SPEAKER_01]: I think that there are moments where he tried to cover for Malach Mustafa, I think there's moments Malach Mustafa was trying to cover for Jair Brown.
- 34:52[SPEAKER_01]: These guys were trying to help each other, but ultimately they were just inconsistent in where they were supposed to be and finishing lots of miss tackles, lots of bad angles.
- 35:00[SPEAKER_01]: they got to get better with that and they got to pull the trigger a little bit quicker.
- 35:03[SPEAKER_01]: That's one thing that I noticed from all of them.
- 35:05[SPEAKER_01]: They're a little bit too flat-footed.
- 35:06[SPEAKER_01]: They don't drive on the football the way I want.
- 35:08[SPEAKER_01]: There were plays over the middle of the field.
- 35:10[SPEAKER_01]: They could have finished.
- 35:10[SPEAKER_01]: They could have got there in time and got the ball knocked away.
- 35:13[SPEAKER_01]: Just weren't able to do it because they're a half a click to slow reading the play and making the play.
- 35:19[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, it like that's they like a lot of times the safeties don't really they communicate together, but they don't really play off of each other very often.
- 35:32[SPEAKER_02]: Corners and safeties interact more linebackers and safeties interact more instead of this safety safety.
- 35:40[SPEAKER_02]: Like it doesn't really work that way in this defense, but we're stuff a definitely had issues, but.
- 35:48[SPEAKER_02]: nowhere near Brown.
- 35:50[SPEAKER_02]: Um, like, I think Marky Seagull was much more consistent.
- 35:54[SPEAKER_02]: He just doesn't have the ceiling of Brown.
- 35:57[SPEAKER_02]: Um, Chia Brown's been really bad for back to back years in my opinion.
- 36:01[SPEAKER_02]: He's had one or two games.
- 36:03[SPEAKER_02]: And I still remember laughing out loud when the 49ers official,
- 36:08[SPEAKER_02]: channel was putting out Pro Bowl vote for Jair Brown Pro Bowl and I like I just laughed I was just like what the hell is this Like you got to be kidding me, but he sees himself that way and and I liked the way that Jair Brown sees himself like I want that high-end confidence
- 36:27[SPEAKER_02]: goldfish memory, you know, whatever, but this is the guy that's given up the most touch downs through the air and back to back seasons, even though it didn't even start all the games.
- 36:37[SPEAKER_02]: You look at his mistaque rate.
- 36:38[SPEAKER_02]: You look at an even outside of the mistaque rate.
- 36:41[SPEAKER_02]: There are so many plays where he doesn't even register a mistaque because his angle is so bad he doesn't even make contact.
- 36:47[SPEAKER_02]: Can't even tackle him in flat football.
- 36:49[SPEAKER_02]: Now,
- 36:50[SPEAKER_02]: He does have ball skills.
- 36:51[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 36:51[SPEAKER_02]: He did have an interception in the Super Bowl.
- 36:53[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 36:54[SPEAKER_02]: He was great under Wilkes.
- 36:56[SPEAKER_02]: Maybe that returns with the coaching staff now with Rahim Morris and Jerry Gray is the DB coach.
- 37:02[SPEAKER_02]: That is huge.
- 37:03[SPEAKER_02]: I would like nothing more than to be wrong on Jaiya Brown and Jake Brindle.
- 37:08[SPEAKER_02]: I want nothing more than them to have the best seasons of their career.
- 37:13[SPEAKER_02]: But if we're looking back,
- 37:17[SPEAKER_02]: Mustafa hands, headed feet, headed shoulders better.
- 37:22[SPEAKER_02]: I think it's the way it's supposed to go.
- 37:23[SPEAKER_02]: The Jaya Brown, I don't even think it's close.
- 37:26[SPEAKER_02]: Now, the improved defensive line rush that will help the safety's.
- 37:30[SPEAKER_02]: It will.
- 37:31[SPEAKER_02]: That will not help the safety's in run game.
- 37:33[SPEAKER_02]: That will not help the safety's in mistackle rates.
- 37:37[SPEAKER_02]: That does not.
- 37:38[SPEAKER_02]: It does affect getting beat deep because the ball should come out faster.
- 37:42[SPEAKER_02]: I do agree there.
- 37:45[SPEAKER_02]: man like it.
- 37:46[SPEAKER_02]: You you see Jaya Brown get beat across the front of his face on a slant route in the red zone that past rushing going to help that.
- 37:54[SPEAKER_02]: Like you can't have them break in front of your face.
- 37:57[SPEAKER_02]: You just can't do that.
- 37:58[SPEAKER_02]: So there's just so much
- 38:01[SPEAKER_02]: To me, whenever I watch 27 play, that just says, man, that ain't it, like, that's not it.
- 38:09[SPEAKER_02]: So I think you have more hope than I do, Obi-Wan, you're our only hope, and my crazy, I am crazy, but like,
- 38:22[SPEAKER_02]: make me feel better about Chia your problem.
- 38:23[SPEAKER_02]: Let me ask.
- 38:24[SPEAKER_02]: Can you do that?
- 38:25[SPEAKER_02]: Can you make me feel better about number 27?
- 38:28[SPEAKER_01]: I think there's always a hope that right when you get some sort of a change in in philosophy defensively a little bit and there's not going to be a start change because they're sticking with what Robert Sol is already started to build here.
- 38:39[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, that's been one of the things that's been consistent.
- 38:41[SPEAKER_01]: But we have seen when a
- 38:43[SPEAKER_01]: a different guy comes in from a different tree.
- 38:46[SPEAKER_01]: The secondary can change a little bit and some of the expectations, even some of the techniques that they teach will have had some things that were different.
- 38:52[SPEAKER_01]: Those things definitely helped out.
- 38:54[SPEAKER_01]: Jair Brown, now it's, we're he Morris's job and coach Gray's job to go in and say, hey, these are the things that are going to benefit Jair Brown.
- 39:02[SPEAKER_01]: We got to put him in the best situations to be successful.
- 39:05[SPEAKER_01]: I think that the thing with Jair is he shows moments where he comes flying up and he lights somebody up in the lens going to be like, holy cow, this dude's a monster or he makes a play where he gets an intercept here like, yes, this is the Jair Brown we want.
- 39:19[SPEAKER_01]: It's just it's so hidden miss and if he could make more hits than misses, I think then he can turn into a good football player that the four years can count on, but right now that consistency hasn't happened and maybe it's the changing coordinators, maybe that has
- 39:35[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know that for sure, but I do think the 49ers invested in Marky Seagull for a reason, and I think that that they're ensuring themselves that, hey, we got somebody that can step in and make some plays, and I think Seagull's going to get it run.
- 39:45[SPEAKER_01]: Jaya Brown is going to be tested this off season with Marky Seagull, especially now that he's been in the system for a full year.
- 39:52[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, and adding to that bin, how much does the return of Fred Warner helped to save these?
- 39:56[SPEAKER_02]: We've talked about this before.
- 39:58[SPEAKER_02]: Like, Rahim Morris has more experience in the Tampa II system than he does any other system.
- 40:04[SPEAKER_02]: I really hope we do a lot of Tampa II with Fred Warner back personally.
- 40:08[SPEAKER_02]: Like, that would be, if I was the defensive coordinator, that's what I would run.
- 40:14[SPEAKER_02]: I'd run a lot of Tampa II, which they do under Sola, under Sorenson, under like Wilkes, they've done Tampa II
- 40:22[SPEAKER_02]: But Raheem runs a little bit more at Tampa 2.
- 40:24[SPEAKER_02]: I would like more of that.
- 40:26[SPEAKER_02]: And yeah, Warner helps out.
- 40:27[SPEAKER_02]: He's the greatest coverage line back from the history NFL.
- 40:29[SPEAKER_02]: I'm going to keep saying that until he catches on.
- 40:32[SPEAKER_02]: He's that damn good.
- 40:33[SPEAKER_02]: He helps out way more in coverage than I think even, you know, I don't want to say more than the past rush, but the communication getting everybody right, you don't have to worry about that anymore.
- 40:43[SPEAKER_02]: Now, we've got this awesome question.
- 40:46[SPEAKER_02]: from a man big pop appreciate your buddy.
- 40:49[SPEAKER_02]: Any chance you guys can come up with a show on the idea of these three tight insets, the Rams run and the Seahawks run.
- 40:56[SPEAKER_02]: And this is the new NFL thing.
- 40:57[SPEAKER_02]: Every team in the NFL, you look at that run on tight ins in the second round.
- 41:01[SPEAKER_02]: Nobody saw coming.
- 41:02[SPEAKER_02]: You're seeing the Jags taking Nate Borkicherture.
- 41:06[SPEAKER_02]: All I ever say is name like that was a shock.
- 41:08[SPEAKER_02]: Everybody talk about the Sean Stiblin.
- 41:09[SPEAKER_02]: That's even more of a reach.
- 41:11[SPEAKER_02]: Niners didn't haven't drafted tight in two years.
- 41:14[SPEAKER_02]: They haven't signed it tight in.
- 41:15[SPEAKER_02]: They did just kiddo whatever.
- 41:19[SPEAKER_02]: How do the 49ers respond to these two tight ins or three tight ins sets?
- 41:24[SPEAKER_02]: This 13 personnel that's going through the NFL.
- 41:28[SPEAKER_02]: What's the answer there?
- 41:30[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I mean, I think you sold the NFL shift to a wide open game, right?
- 41:33[SPEAKER_01]: They kind of mirrored college football.
- 41:34[SPEAKER_01]: Let's get all the speed out on the field.
- 41:36[SPEAKER_01]: And so what teams started doing was let's get faster at linebacker.
- 41:39[SPEAKER_01]: Let's get faster at nickel.
- 41:41[SPEAKER_01]: Let's overall team speed.
- 41:42[SPEAKER_01]: So you got lighter safety, you got lighter linebackers.
- 41:45[SPEAKER_01]: And so what's the counter to that?
- 41:47[SPEAKER_01]: Well, let's get three tight ends on the field where they're bigger and they can block these linebackers.
- 41:52[SPEAKER_01]: They can block these nickel corners.
- 41:54[SPEAKER_01]: And so what do you do?
- 41:55[SPEAKER_01]: Well, you get guys like Marky Seagull, and I know that that was a guy that, you know, maybe we don't know exactly who we could be, but he's a guy that can step up and be physical at the line of scrimmage.
- 42:05[SPEAKER_01]: And we saw it.
- 42:06[SPEAKER_01]: They tried it last year with him on Terrence Ferguson early on in the season and he was matched up perfectly.
- 42:11[SPEAKER_01]: Having those safety who can kind of turn and run is something that you need.
- 42:15[SPEAKER_01]: Now with the 49ers also it did was address it a couple of different ways.
- 42:19[SPEAKER_01]: What information see with Nate Hobbs.
- 42:20[SPEAKER_01]: Now you have a big.
- 42:21[SPEAKER_01]: nickel corner that can step in and play physically six foot one which means he can match up with most tight ends in the league Then you draft the fissions price lock as well.
- 42:30[SPEAKER_01]: You know six foot three 200 pounds Really big and long and so what you've done is you've added to the guys you can cover those guys But it's not done there.
- 42:39[SPEAKER_01]: You've also started adding guys like Jayden Dougher You have a guy like Nick Martin.
- 42:44[SPEAKER_01]: You bring back Drake Greenlaw and all the sudden you have guys who can match up
- 42:48[SPEAKER_01]: with these big physical tight ends in the run game, but also still stick with them and cover.
- 42:53[SPEAKER_01]: So the 49ers are definitely going that way to be able to defend 13 personnel while also giving themselves versatility to give three, four looks and do a lot of different things.
- 43:03[SPEAKER_01]: So every coming more multiple on defense, but I do think that they're addressing that look and it's funny because on offense, I think Kyle Shaden is going to completely different way and say that 13 personnel thing, that's not gonna last, you give it like a year or two and they're gonna move on to something else.
- 43:16[SPEAKER_01]: and he's already moving on to something else.
- 43:19[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, and you know, I'll argue, probably the worst game last year defensively was that first that the matchup against the Rams, McFey took them to the woodshed.
- 43:31[SPEAKER_02]: Like it was embarrassing.
- 43:33[SPEAKER_02]: And a lot of it was 13 personnel.
- 43:35[SPEAKER_02]: Like he just could not adjust appropriately.
- 43:39[SPEAKER_02]: to what was happening out there.
- 43:41[SPEAKER_02]: And it was bad.
- 43:42[SPEAKER_02]: Now you got the win, the 26 to 23, the second game you got smoked.
- 43:48[SPEAKER_02]: And then right after the Rams game, when that's like the halfway point through the season, that's when they started doing that 13 personnel.
- 43:54[SPEAKER_02]: Robbers saw the never end game of just the very next game was the Arizona Cardinals still didn't adjust after the first quarter.
- 44:02[SPEAKER_02]: And then after halftime came out and figured it out.
- 44:06[SPEAKER_02]: And so like they were just behind the eight pole.
- 44:08[SPEAKER_02]: And this was, this is kind of the Robert solid paradox is that he's so simplified schematically that everybody knows what they're supposed to do.
- 44:19[SPEAKER_02]: The adjustments to new stuff takes solid some time.
- 44:23[SPEAKER_02]: I'm just going to be very, very honest.
- 44:25[SPEAKER_02]: Like that is a negative to kind of Robert solid.
- 44:29[SPEAKER_02]: Now,
- 44:30[SPEAKER_02]: right here, shout out to Phil Berto.
- 44:36[SPEAKER_02]: What is Rahim known for on his teams and prove coverage, better tackling what improvements will you see?
- 44:42[SPEAKER_02]: Versa tile approaches.
- 44:45[SPEAKER_02]: That is what Rahim Morris has been known for.
- 44:48[SPEAKER_02]: Three, four, four, three, base, Tampa 2, penetrating style.
- 44:54[SPEAKER_02]: Fire zones.
- 44:55[SPEAKER_02]: This guy is a
- 45:12[SPEAKER_02]: Rahim Morris is known for adapting the scheme to fit his personnel probably better than anything, and he's as positive of a human being or a coach that anybody's been around like he brings the vibes.
- 45:25[SPEAKER_02]: He is just such a good dude.
- 45:28[SPEAKER_02]: What would you add to this question by Phil Bertowon?
- 45:31[SPEAKER_02]: What Rahim Morris is known for?
- 45:33[SPEAKER_01]: Also generating pass rush.
- 45:35[SPEAKER_01]: I think when you look at what he's done with his defenses They generate a lot of pass rush.
- 45:39[SPEAKER_01]: You know, whether that was bringing in the right personnel or just you'll finding ways to get guys after the quarterback and I think that that's one of the things that the defense is really need to do is Pre-snap the post snap that is what Seattle did so well.
- 45:51[SPEAKER_01]: Hey, we're gonna give you a look pre-snap and then post snap.
- 45:53[SPEAKER_01]: It's going to change and make the quarterback
- 45:56[SPEAKER_01]: Have to figure things out where he more does that because you don't know exactly what you're going to get But he's trying to get the most versatile personality can get so you can't even get a tell by what the personnel is That's why I think somebody like Nick Martin could end up being very important for this 49ers defense this year If he's a guy that can come up to the line of scrimmage and play that 4-3 over-type
- 46:16[SPEAKER_01]: roll and bring pressure off the outside where you get a three four look, and he has got so much speed to get off the ball, a little hybrid roll, but then still be able to play Sam lineback or match up a tie-dance.
- 46:26[SPEAKER_01]: That's going to be one of the most unique things is how much better as Nick Barton got in coverage.
- 46:30[SPEAKER_01]: Because it was rough last year watching his footwork and training camp and everything, but he's had time to work on it.
- 46:36[SPEAKER_01]: and let's see where he's at because he's an extreme athlete and the 49ers can get those athletes on the field, you know, three safety looks, some of these three line-backer looks where everybody can cover, I think they can kind of neutralize that that 13 personnel, but I think that's one thing where he Morris is going to bring is an attitude to get out for the quarterback and I think the 49ers desperately need that.
- 46:54[SPEAKER_02]: Look at this question from Kim Pro.
- 46:56[SPEAKER_02]: How much more does more splits?
- 46:58[SPEAKER_02]: Now, blitz is constituted by bringing five or more players, right?
- 47:04[SPEAKER_02]: The falcons were second in the NFL last year with 209 blitzes.
- 47:09[SPEAKER_02]: The 49ers were fourth to the bottom with 116.
- 47:13[SPEAKER_02]: So you're talking a difference of 90 more blitz place, a percentage wise, 49ers last year, blitz 18%, the Falcons blitz 33%, it is aggressive, like they go after it and they generate it and you look at,
- 47:33[SPEAKER_02]: the rookie performance, the top two rookies and sacks were both Falcons players.
- 47:38[SPEAKER_02]: JJ James Pierce, and then you had Jaylon Walker.
- 47:42[SPEAKER_02]: Like they were number one and number two and Zachary.
- 47:44[SPEAKER_02]: Now can Romelo height step in and replicate that?
- 47:47[SPEAKER_02]: Now, last year was a really low sack number for rookies four and a half sacks for Jaylon Walker, a first round pick.
- 47:53[SPEAKER_02]: I think most people would have been like man, that's not really enough.
- 47:56[SPEAKER_02]: But
- 47:57[SPEAKER_02]: That's kind of the world we're in now.
- 48:00[SPEAKER_02]: So I'll reflect this question to you on Ramelo height.
- 48:05[SPEAKER_02]: Over under four and a half sacks, like do you think he hits that right at it or below?
- 48:10[SPEAKER_01]: I'm going to go over.
- 48:12[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think it's going to be right way over.
- 48:14[SPEAKER_01]: I would say like five sacks is real legitimate for Ramello height this year because there's going to be so much pressure generated in other spots.
- 48:22[SPEAKER_01]: I think that he's going to get some one on one matchups and his speed is a little bit deceptive.
- 48:26[SPEAKER_01]: I think for some of these offensive tackles where he kind of gets them to overset and works inside.
- 48:30[SPEAKER_01]: I think Ramello height's going to have some opportunities.
- 48:32[SPEAKER_01]: And I think as long as he can stay healthy,
- 48:34[SPEAKER_01]: I think in a 17 game season, I think he gets five sacks for this 49er football team and I think that that would be welcomed because I do think that he's going to be out there pretty much in every past rush snap that they have, especially in the third and longs.
- 48:46[SPEAKER_02]: Now, okay, I want to kind of new wants take here and I want to push back a little bit.
- 48:52[SPEAKER_02]: Because right here, since she says, I love the aggressiveness, will Kyle Shanahan allow Rahe Morris to blitz as much as he blitz last year.
- 49:02[SPEAKER_02]: We've seen Shanahan flip out, and we've heard him talk about, we really believe in bringing foreman pressure, and limits the explosives on the back end, having seven guys drop in coverage, you saw them freaking go nuts on Steve Wilkes for trying to do now, Steve Wilkes blitz, a little bit different than Rahe Morris blitz.
- 49:17[SPEAKER_02]: There's a different screen, bringing seven and bringing five.
- 49:21[SPEAKER_02]: Will Shanahan allow a 33% blitz rate from a defense that he's the head coach of because I'm not sure he will.
- 49:29[SPEAKER_01]: I think he will if it's successful.
- 49:30[SPEAKER_01]: That's the key.
- 49:31[SPEAKER_01]: You know, the thing with Steve Wilkes is it wasn't successful, right?
- 49:34[SPEAKER_01]: I mean Calvin Ridley scored a touchdown on a play that should have never, you know, happened.
- 49:38[SPEAKER_01]: Those types of things they make you as a coach second guess what your coordinators doing and then you have to get involved.
- 49:45[SPEAKER_01]: But if they're successful and they're holding teams down, they're getting them to get rid of the ball quickly.
- 49:49[SPEAKER_01]: Couch in and doesn't care.
- 49:50[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 49:51[SPEAKER_01]: That that's ultimately what it comes down to success is the key.
- 49:54[SPEAKER_01]: He's the reason he keeps going back to the four man pressure is he saw it be successful.
- 49:59[SPEAKER_01]: So if it works.
- 50:00[SPEAKER_01]: Then you're okay, but as long as those big explosives don't happen, he will absolutely be okay with in fact He would if he's like me as a coach.
- 50:07[SPEAKER_01]: I'm like, oh, you want to blitz a hundred percent of the time and it's gonna work Then do it.
- 50:11[SPEAKER_01]: I don't care as long as it works get the football back to the offense That's the key.
- 50:15[SPEAKER_01]: I think that's how Kyle will feel and I think he'll probably give a little bit more rope to where he more Because that's his guy, right?
- 50:20[SPEAKER_01]: He trusts where he more so a lot So he'll give him an opportunity to kind of prove what he can do
- 50:25[SPEAKER_02]: Steve Wilkes not his guy was not his guy had no like and you have many times have we heard Kyle Shene and say where he Morris like should be head coach like he's one of the best coaches and two got arrested for him you know I mean like like they've yeah it's what it is right here last question from brother talk he says do you see Striplin becoming a full-time starter this year
- 50:50[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think he's going to be a full-time starter this year.
- 50:52[SPEAKER_01]: I think that he's going to have an opportunity to work in.
- 50:55[SPEAKER_01]: I think they're going to have some key things for him initially.
- 50:58[SPEAKER_01]: I look for the top three wide receivers to be Evans, Pierce Salt, and Kirk.
- 51:03[SPEAKER_01]: And I think that they're going to kind of work.
- 51:05[SPEAKER_01]: Stribbling in where they where they need a good matchup where they like him, you know, even the block sometimes, but other times just to kind of take the top off the defense, whether that's playing X so it can free Mike Evans to move around a little bit or if that's to kind of play that slot or zero, they kind of get some matchups that they like, but expect dribbling snaps to go up as the season goes on as he gets more acclimated to the offense, it gets a better feel for things, but I expect a package for dribbling as a part of this offense as early as week one.
- 51:35[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I agree.
- 51:36[SPEAKER_02]: He's in that same different positions have different rotations, right?
- 51:42[SPEAKER_02]: Left tackle, right tackle, don't rotate.
- 51:45[SPEAKER_02]: Corners don't rotate.
- 51:46[SPEAKER_02]: Safety's don't rotate.
- 51:48[SPEAKER_02]: Why receivers rotate for every single team and every single position?
- 51:51[SPEAKER_02]: So even though he's not a quote unquote starter, you're talking about somebody that's gonna get 20 to 30 plays a game, and that is efficient.
- 51:58[SPEAKER_02]: Like that is, so will he have the starter column?
- 52:02[SPEAKER_02]: Will he be out there on the first snap?
- 52:04[SPEAKER_02]: Probably not.
- 52:06[SPEAKER_02]: Probably maybe four to five starts if you're just talking out there on the very first snap of the game.
- 52:12[SPEAKER_02]: I don't think that that is indicative to he's, you know, living up to where he was drafted or whatever.
- 52:18[SPEAKER_02]: Why receiver position different and understand this he is going.
- 52:22[SPEAKER_02]: from the most elementary wide receiver system and all of college football to the most advanced wide receiver system and all of the NFL.
- 52:32[SPEAKER_02]: There is a learning curve.
- 52:34[SPEAKER_02]: The good news is to shot Striplin has played for several different friends at all versions of the air raid shout out Mike Leach.
- 52:41[SPEAKER_02]: But like it's going to take time and Brock even said this in his interview yesterday,
- 52:48[SPEAKER_02]: Once dribbling gets into the playbook and learns everything, it will be interesting to see.
- 52:52[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, you can go out there and do routes on air.
- 52:54[SPEAKER_02]: You run this route.
- 52:55[SPEAKER_02]: I'm going to throw it and we're just, you know, out there and short shorts.
- 52:57[SPEAKER_02]: That's one thing.
- 52:58[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, that's cool.
- 53:01[SPEAKER_02]: For Kyle Shanahan offense, that wide receiver position is advanced calculus.
- 53:05[SPEAKER_02]: It will take time.
- 53:07[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, the.
- 53:08[SPEAKER_02]: whatever clickbait, whatever they're going to have plenty of juice to go out there and say it was a waste early on and whatever, don't listen to that crap.
- 53:16[SPEAKER_02]: You are better.
- 53:17[SPEAKER_02]: You already know that.
- 53:20[SPEAKER_02]: It's going to take time.
- 53:21[SPEAKER_02]: But that's why you signed Mike Evans in Christian Kirk.
- 53:25[SPEAKER_02]: So you have the now and then you have the upside to the later.
- 53:29[SPEAKER_02]: And so he gets to grow into this role.
- 53:32[SPEAKER_02]: I'm pretty excited, and man, like, for to shine dribbling to step into this situation, behind Mike Evans and behind Kirk and just just learn, but still get the reps because he's going to.
- 53:44[SPEAKER_02]: I'm more excited about the dribbling pick every single day, every single day.
- 53:48[SPEAKER_02]: I'm just like, and that's why he was in the ancillate, and that's why he was a rush crush.
- 53:54[SPEAKER_02]: Like, we're, we're sympathico on the dissonced dribbling love and fit, maybe a little early, then we both hope for, but dude, I'm excited about this kidding, I really am.
- 54:06[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I mean, the thing is, he's got all the ability to be someone great and he does all the dirty work, too, right?
- 54:12[SPEAKER_01]: This isn't just a flashy guy that runs verticals and can make plays down the field.
- 54:16[SPEAKER_01]: He's a complete wide receiver.
- 54:18[SPEAKER_01]: He's going to do all the dirty work, all the blocking is going to get yards after the catch.
- 54:22[SPEAKER_01]: He's a complete wide receiver with the size to go with it.
- 54:25[SPEAKER_01]: And so I think the 49ers are super excited about this.
- 54:27[SPEAKER_01]: This isn't just an instant impact guy, but this is a guy that's going to be, you know, here for a long time and the 49ers are hoping that he's going to become the next great wide receiver.
- 54:35[SPEAKER_01]: Uh, so he's going to make some sort of an impact this season.
- 54:38[SPEAKER_01]: There's going to be moments where we see stripling make some explosive play and we're like, holy cow, look at what this guy could be.
- 54:45[SPEAKER_01]: And then by the time we get to next year, we're going to be talking about the fact,
- 54:47[SPEAKER_01]: that your son's dribbling is going to be an absolute star in this league.
- 54:50[SPEAKER_01]: That's what I believe.
- 54:50[SPEAKER_01]: I think he's got all the tools.
- 54:51[SPEAKER_01]: I think he's got the right mindset.
- 54:53[SPEAKER_01]: Think in the in the long run, this is going to be a really dynamic pick for the 49ers.
- 54:58[SPEAKER_02]: I'm excited.
- 54:58[SPEAKER_02]: Man, this is a fun show.
- 55:00[SPEAKER_02]: And you are the man.
- 55:01[SPEAKER_02]: I appreciate you not just being the beauty behind this podcast, but also the content you are the best.
- 55:07[SPEAKER_02]: That's going to do it for us today.
- 55:08[SPEAKER_02]: You guys are incredible.
- 55:09[SPEAKER_02]: And until next time, stay strong, faithful.
- 55:11[SPEAKER_02]: We out.
