- 0:04Welcome to Healthier Together, Larimer County's
- 0:06public health podcast, where we come together
- 0:08for healthier lives, connected communities, and
- 0:10real conversations. From your local public health
- 0:13team, I'm your host, Tom. And I'm Joanna. This
- 0:16is your weekly Minnesota, where we'll provide
- 0:17a brief update on local public health news. Today,
- 0:21we have Jenna Robinson, Executive Director at
- 0:24Saint Volunteer Transportation, here to tell
- 0:26us more about Saint and those services they provide.
- 0:30Jenna, thank you so much for joining us. Thanks
- 0:32so much for inviting me. To start, can you tell
- 0:34us about SAINT and the work that you do? Yeah,
- 0:36so SAINT Volunteer Transportation uses volunteer
- 0:39drivers to help folks get around in Fort Collins
- 0:41and Loveland. We've been serving the community
- 0:44for over 40 years. These rides look like getting
- 0:47folks to medical appointments, grocery store,
- 0:49hanging out with friends at senior centers. We
- 0:52also give rides to individuals with disabilities.
- 0:54So those rides generally are for employment or
- 0:58getting to school. However, we give plenty of
- 1:01rides to individuals with disabilities that are
- 1:04grocery stores and coffee shops. So really, the
- 1:07purpose of SAINT is just to make sure that everyone
- 1:10has access to the community. And that transportation
- 1:13isn't a barrier for that. How did Saint get started?
- 1:16Yeah, so that was back in the 80s. A couple women,
- 1:19which unfortunately have remained nameless. I
- 1:23can't find the identities of these people, but
- 1:25they're geniuses. They noticed that in their
- 1:28neighborhood, folks that had to give up their
- 1:30cars were now housebound. And so, you know, they
- 1:34started receiving requests. Hey, do you mind
- 1:36taking me to the grocery store or whatever? And
- 1:37they thought, you know what? way more people
- 1:40would be willing to help if they just knew that
- 1:42this was an issue. And that's really how Saint
- 1:45was born. They started spreading the word. More
- 1:48people, of course, wanted to chip in and make
- 1:50sure that everyone had access and take it off
- 1:53from there. Now, how many rides does Saint provide
- 1:57on an average month? Yeah, so we give about 1
- 2:00,700 rides a month, and that's between our two
- 2:04programs. So we've got Fort Collins and Loveland,
- 2:06quite substantial. Who typically uses Saint Services?
- 2:10Are there any criteria or can anyone request
- 2:13a ride through Saint? So Saint rides are available
- 2:16to anyone 16 and over. And there's no hefty registration
- 2:21process. It's literally your name, your date
- 2:25of birth, your address. So as long as where you
- 2:28are and where you're going are within our boundaries,
- 2:30then we can give you the... give you the ride.
- 2:33If you're younger than 60, so 18 to 59, there
- 2:37would need to be a disability that specifically
- 2:39prevents you from driving. So there is one added
- 2:42step in that process. We do have to have that
- 2:45verified that your disability prevents you from
- 2:48driving. It doesn't have to be from a medical
- 2:50doctor. It can be from a caseworker in your life
- 2:53or a health professional in whatever capacity.
- 2:55And you mentioned things like doctor's appointments.
- 2:58What all do riders use Saint services for? Like
- 3:02I mentioned, we have the two programs, Fort Collins
- 3:04and Loveland. Loveland ridership looks a bit
- 3:06different than Fort Collins. While the program
- 3:09is the exact same, we give rides to absolutely
- 3:11anyone who's eligible to any place in our boundaries,
- 3:14Loveland generally uses Saint more for medical
- 3:18appointments. And medical appointments can also
- 3:20be the gateway for us, too. They use us for medical
- 3:24appointments. Of course, they love the conversation
- 3:26they're having in the car with their drivers.
- 3:28Drivers are utterly fantastic. And so then, you
- 3:32know, they find out, oh, well, can you take me
- 3:33to the salon to get my hair done every week?
- 3:36Yes. As long as we have availability, we would
- 3:38love to do that. And that's really what it comes
- 3:40down to. It's not the location or the person
- 3:43that takes priority. It's just whether we have
- 3:45availability in the schedule. We got a ton of
- 3:47drivers over the... fall, winter -ish. And so
- 3:52Loveland is ripe for taking on a lot more individuals,
- 3:56which is awesome. In Fort Collins, we've got
- 3:58lots of what we call subscription rides. So people
- 4:01that use us every week to go to the same places
- 4:04at the same time. So Pilates classes, I mentioned
- 4:07work. We've got a number of people that we take
- 4:09to work every week, grocery store, going to the
- 4:13bank, of course, medical. So we give quite a
- 4:17number of dialysis rides. routine rides, lots
- 4:21of variety. We have a number of riders who go
- 4:23to visit their family, one who visits her sister,
- 4:26another who visits her mom, one woman who goes
- 4:29to her daughter's house to babysit the grandkids.
- 4:32I mean, really, you name it. We want to help
- 4:34folks get there. What makes St. unique compared
- 4:36to other transportation supports? These are completely
- 4:39free rides that we don't file with insurance.
- 4:43We don't charge. Our drivers do not want tips.
- 4:47They don't want to handle your money at all.
- 4:51Our drivers really are in it for the connections,
- 4:54for helping folks get where they need to be,
- 4:56not just for the well -being of the individual,
- 4:58but truly our community is better when we can
- 5:01all participate in it, especially when we're
- 5:04looking at a demographic, older individuals or
- 5:07individuals with disabilities, the friendships
- 5:09that are made in the car, because a lot of these
- 5:12drivers and riders share rides together frequently,
- 5:16is a really valuable part of it. And then the
- 5:19impact of that is increased well -being on both
- 5:21sides, right, on the driver and the rider. How
- 5:24many volunteers drive for Saints? Yes, I looked
- 5:28this up because they usually say, oh, about 100.
- 5:30So we currently have 117 drivers. And not all
- 5:35of these drivers are routine drivers. So a routine
- 5:38driver would be taking a four -hour shift once
- 5:41a week. We give rides from 8 a .m. to 4 p .m.,
- 5:43Monday through Friday. So a four -hour shift
- 5:46would be 8 to 12 or 12 to 4. We do have a handful
- 5:50of drivers that do that kind of bridge time of
- 5:5310 to 2. And then we have the other volunteer
- 5:55opportunity when it comes to driving, which is
- 5:57a fill -in. So anytime a routine driver needs
- 6:00to go on vacation or has a medical appointment
- 6:02of their own and they can't cover their own shift,
- 6:05then we reach out to our fill -in drivers. So
- 6:07we have some fill -in drivers that drive more
- 6:09than a routine driver just because they're picking
- 6:11up so many of these. fill in opportunities. And
- 6:15then we have like snowbirds and stuff who only
- 6:17come in for a certain season, join the routine
- 6:19shift just for a handful of months and then leave
- 6:22to fly away. So it really is quite a diverse
- 6:27range of volunteers, but there are 117 of them.
- 6:29And all of those are drivers. We definitely have
- 6:33other volunteer opportunities that are currently
- 6:36unmet. A social media is a huge one that we would
- 6:39love for someone who's interested to. step into,
- 6:43but then also just like admins, just regular
- 6:46computer work, we would love for help in that
- 6:49space as well. You started to talk about how
- 6:52transportation can often be a pretty significant
- 6:55barrier to accessing everything from healthcare
- 6:59to community services to social spaces. How do
- 7:03you see transportation play a role in health
- 7:06and well -being and community? There's quite
- 7:09a bit of research out there that shows that the
- 7:11health disparity when we're looking between different
- 7:14people groups really comes down to transportation,
- 7:16not availability of doctors or even appointment
- 7:20times. It's folks actually getting to those appointments.
- 7:24So just in the medical space, your actual physical
- 7:27health, transportation is a cornerstone of that.
- 7:31And then if you translate that to other areas
- 7:34of our life, our social well -being, again, The
- 7:38party doesn't come to you. You've got to go to
- 7:40the party. And so without transportation, that's
- 7:43just not going to happen. Our Fort Collins and
- 7:46Loveland have paratransit programs, and those
- 7:49operate within a certain distance of the bus
- 7:51stop. So if you live or can get to a certain
- 7:55range within the bus stop, then you have access
- 7:58to that paratransit. opportunity are these vouchers
- 8:02that you can get through the paratransit program
- 8:04but those vouchers again you only get so many
- 8:06of them and then when you don't have them that's
- 8:09it and so saint kind of fills in that necessary
- 8:12gap of either living outside of that zone within
- 8:16the bus stop or those who don't have vouchers
- 8:20anymore. Many of our riders have quite the toolbox
- 8:24of transportation options, which is really necessary.
- 8:28None of us who are offering transportation can
- 8:30do it all for every single person. And so having
- 8:33as many different opportunities and options in
- 8:36the community for individuals is really important
- 8:38to make sure everyone can stay active as they
- 8:40want and need. Is there a particular story of
- 8:44social connection that Saint helped foster that
- 8:47you'd like to share? There are too many. I was
- 8:50keeping them on post -it notes in the office.
- 8:52So as individuals would call in, you know, they
- 8:55don't realize that they're unloading a huge gem
- 8:57to you. They just think they're just telling
- 8:59you something fun that just happened. But when
- 9:01we hear it on the, you know, in the office, we're
- 9:03like, ah, this is exactly why we do the work
- 9:06we do. So I handed, they're all paper clipped,
- 9:09all my post -it notes and random, you know, emails
- 9:12that I printed out that I got from drivers. Again,
- 9:14they're just offhandedly, oh yeah, the other
- 9:16day, dot, dot, dot. I handed all of those over
- 9:18to my daughter so she could put them in a Google
- 9:20spreadsheet so I could have them. So I didn't
- 9:23have any of them when I was prepping this, but
- 9:25I can tell you, we've got a new scheduling software.
- 9:28We just started it mid -February, but it's got
- 9:31this efficient ride routing feature, which is
- 9:34the whole reason we invested in it. And that
- 9:36started March 1st. So we've only been doing this
- 9:38for about a month. And we've definitely reached
- 9:41many road bumps that we've had to slow down and
- 9:45assess and pivot. But one of the cool features
- 9:49of this efficient routing system. is that it
- 9:52enables more than one rider to get in the car
- 9:55if they live in a certain area. So we've always
- 9:57given rides to, let's say an individual says,
- 10:00I'm going to go to the restaurant and my friend
- 10:02lives in the same apartment complex as me. And
- 10:04so she's going to join me for the same ride.
- 10:06Yes. Awesome. Please get in the car together.
- 10:08But what this efficient routing. does is it'll
- 10:12pick one person up and if there's another ride
- 10:14that needs to happen close by, it'll go pick
- 10:16up that person and then drop them off wherever
- 10:19they need to go, usually in different locations.
- 10:21So this is not something that we've been doing
- 10:24routinely prior. to this new software. So there's
- 10:27the context. So on a number of occasions, we've
- 10:30heard riders say that, oh, and I should also
- 10:35preface this with riders don't necessarily know
- 10:37that another person's going to get in the car
- 10:39for that trip. We don't know it in advance. So
- 10:43drivers just always say, hey, just so you know,
- 10:45we're going to pick up another person. Riders
- 10:47have been told if they don't want that, if they'd
- 10:50really like the security and confidence of having
- 10:52the... a ride alone, they can let us know. Just
- 10:55so you know, we try to cover our bases. We had
- 10:57one rider call in recently just to say, well,
- 11:00I had my first ride with the new system. And
- 11:02whenever I hear that, I always kind of like buckle
- 11:04in like, oh, this could go either way. And she
- 11:07said, oh, no, no, it was fine. And you know,
- 11:09actually, there was another rider in the car.
- 11:12And again, this could go either way. So, you
- 11:15know, double buckle. And she says, oh, and we
- 11:18had the best time because, you know, since COVID,
- 11:20I just can't get out like I used to. I usually
- 11:22only get out for medical appointments. So not
- 11:25only did I have the driver to talk to, I had
- 11:27a whole nother person and we just chatted the
- 11:28entire way. And that really is just so uplifting,
- 11:33of course, for her, but also for us who are in
- 11:36it. for them, for the drivers and the riders.
- 11:38We had a board meeting this past Tuesday. And
- 11:40so one of the board members shared that her neighbor
- 11:42recently just had a shared ride as well. And
- 11:45it turns out that the two individuals who in
- 11:49their minds, they were going to be strangers,
- 11:50they see each other and they have this same aerobic
- 11:53class at the senior center together. So it was
- 11:55just an extra time to hang out with friends.
- 11:57So just serendipitous, really, really cool connections.
- 12:01So yeah, lots to share. Yeah, thanks for sharing.
- 12:04If someone is new to Saint and would like to
- 12:07request a ride for the first time, how do they
- 12:09go about that? Yeah, there's a couple different
- 12:11ways. On our website, there's a ride with us
- 12:16button and then you can request rides. So it
- 12:19takes you to a Google form and you put in your
- 12:22request there. I do want to make sure to preface
- 12:23that that is just a request. It's not a schedule.
- 12:27So when you leave that, you still need to wait
- 12:30for the scheduler to call you back to let you
- 12:32know that. there is availability and you have
- 12:34been scheduled. We don't have a lengthy registration
- 12:36process. You don't have to be registered for
- 12:39it with us for a certain amount of time before
- 12:41you can take rides. Really, right when you know
- 12:43about a ride you need and you've never ridden
- 12:45with us, you can drop it on the website or the
- 12:48other way is to call. And that's the most popular
- 12:51way. 970 -223 -8604. If you need a ride in Fort
- 12:58Collins, that's extension 1. And if you need
- 13:01a ride in Loveland, that's extension 2. Those
- 13:04do go straight to a voicemail box, which can
- 13:06be frustrating. But because we get so many requests,
- 13:11that's really the best use of time for our schedulers
- 13:13is to pull them off in the order they received
- 13:15them because we are first come, first served.
- 13:17We do need at least two days notice. If you have
- 13:20routine appointments or appointments that you
- 13:22already know about, like medical, far in advance,
- 13:25then you can go ahead and schedule those through
- 13:27our website or by giving us a call. If you have
- 13:30questions about the process, you have a certain
- 13:33ride, you're not sure it's in our boundaries,
- 13:35or you just want the confidence of knowing that,
- 13:39yes, it is. Saint is an option for you, then
- 13:42you would dial the number I already said, but
- 13:44hit extension five. And that does take you to
- 13:47a live person who will really answer the phone.
- 13:49That's not a scheduling line. So if you left
- 13:52a request, that would still go to our schedulers
- 13:55and they would still call you back. But the phone
- 13:58or online are two great options. And then for
- 14:01anyone who might be interested in volunteering
- 14:03to drive, what does that process look like? Yes.
- 14:08So to volunteer to drive or to volunteer with
- 14:10those other like admin needs or social media,
- 14:13or if you have a passion project and you're like,
- 14:15maybe Saint would be interested in this, please
- 14:17reach out. We probably are. So for those, you
- 14:22can leave your request through our website. There's
- 14:25a contact us form and a place that says something
- 14:28like, you know, interested in volunteering. You
- 14:30would click that and then leave your information
- 14:32in the box available. We get those daily. Those
- 14:39go to our volunteer coordinator, Teresa Holbrook.
- 14:42The other way is to give us a call. So it's that
- 14:44number, 970 -223 -8604. And then you would dial
- 14:49extension 3, and that takes you to our volunteer
- 14:52coordinator. You would just let us know what
- 14:54your interest is. If you have any questions about
- 14:57the opportunity, you could ask them there, although
- 14:58the website also has information about it. And
- 15:01then Teresa would send you the application. There's
- 15:03a place where you say, yes, I'm okay with having
- 15:05a criminal background check. So we'd go ahead
- 15:07and process that. Once that's completed, then
- 15:10Teresa reaches back out again to schedule the
- 15:12onboarding initial meeting. And so that's answering
- 15:17more questions, explaining how the process goes,
- 15:20finding out about the potential volunteers' availability,
- 15:25and setting up whatever that would look like,
- 15:29whether it's a routine shift or fill -in. And
- 15:32then that's usually about an hour, hour and a
- 15:35half meeting with Teresa. And then the final
- 15:38one is a meeting with me. I mentioned our new
- 15:42scheduling software. There's a cool app that's
- 15:45associated with this new software that the drivers
- 15:48use, which again is we're ironing out the kinks
- 15:51on that. It's mixed reviews. So we've been in
- 15:54operation for 40 years and we've never had an
- 15:56app. So there's definitely a learning curve and
- 15:59a comfort to that. But setting up a meeting with
- 16:01me so I can go over what the app entails and
- 16:04answer questions on that. And then you're road
- 16:07ready. Outside of volunteering, are there other
- 16:11ways that people can support SAINT? Whether you're
- 16:13a volunteer or not, writer or not, the most important
- 16:17thing you can do for us is spread the word. Letting
- 16:20your doctor know, you know, maybe you... There
- 16:24are college students listening right now who
- 16:26really don't have very much interaction with
- 16:28seniors or individuals with disabilities, but
- 16:31they're in the doctor office and the doctor or
- 16:33the nurse mentions, you know, yeah, it's tough
- 16:35for people to get here sometimes. Throwing out,
- 16:37oh, I've heard there's a program called SAINT.
- 16:41If they have got availability, we'll help people
- 16:42for free. So really spreading the word because
- 16:45we exist to help. So if we're not helping folks,
- 16:49then we're not living up to our mission. The
- 16:51next thing would be donating. So these are completely
- 16:54free rides. And as the old adage says, nothing
- 16:57is free, which is true in some regards. It is
- 17:02true that these are absolutely free for riders.
- 17:05It's not true in that, of course, there's gas
- 17:07money and insurance and the scheduling software
- 17:09isn't free. And all of those things are made
- 17:11possible because of folks in our community, um,
- 17:15granters in Colorado. We've given generously
- 17:18the city of Fort Collins, city of Loveland, the
- 17:20County, all of these incredible partners make
- 17:24these rides possible. So check out our website,
- 17:26see what we're up to reach out to us. Um, we'd
- 17:29love to partner in a financial capacity as well.
- 17:32Awesome. Jenna, thank you so much for joining
- 17:34us today. Yes, this was too quick. Thank you.
- 17:37I thoroughly enjoyed it. Do you have a question
- 17:42about public health in Larimer County or a topic
- 17:44you'd like us to discuss? Let us know. Email
- 17:48us at healthiertogetheratlarimer .org. Thanks
- 17:52for listening, Larimer County. Until next week,
- 17:55stay well, stay connected, and remember, we really
- 17:58are healthier together.
