- 0:00Speaker 1: I get a macome to another installment of I was
- 0:03Speaker 1: going to say your favorite show, but that's incredibly presumptuous
- 0:06Speaker 1: of me. So I'm just going to be realistic and say,
- 0:10Speaker 1: welcome to an episode of a show that you sometimes
- 0:14Speaker 1: listen to. Some of you love it, some of you
- 0:17Speaker 1: just visit every now and then. I tell you who
- 0:20Speaker 1: visits every now and then, Bloody doctor Denise.
- 0:23Speaker 2: Hi, Hello, Hello, how are we all wait? Well?
- 0:28Speaker 1: I can't speak on behalf the rest of the group,
- 0:30Speaker 1: but it's all good. Bloody at Melbourne today. It's two
- 0:34Speaker 1: five in the PM as we record this Bloody, this
- 0:37Speaker 1: gift to the world, and it's Thursday, Thursday the twenty fourth,
- 0:43Speaker 1: and it's just the most majestic day. I sound like
- 0:47Speaker 1: an old person. I'm looking out the window of my office,
- 0:51Speaker 1: but so fucking beautiful. I just got back from a
- 0:53Speaker 1: walk and I've just tiken all the craigboxes today. This
- 0:58Speaker 1: is my second Partty. I've done it bit of uni,
- 1:00Speaker 1: I've done a bit of reading, I've done a bit
- 1:02Speaker 1: of research, I've done a bit of creating. I've had
- 1:05Speaker 1: some coffee. I've got some steps in going to go
- 1:08Speaker 1: the gym and lift heavy shit later. But it's like
- 1:12Speaker 1: it's it's quite a nice life that I've built. If
- 1:15Speaker 1: I do say so myself, I quite enjoy being in
- 1:18Speaker 1: the middle of it.
- 1:19Speaker 2: Hmm. I want to be happy for you, But deep
- 1:22Speaker 2: down there's a little part of me that's like, well,
- 1:24Speaker 2: I don't feel like I'm that in control.
- 1:30Speaker 1: Like one of the we've got this is not well, fuck,
- 1:33Speaker 1: it could be a plug. Hey everyone, Next Monday, the
- 1:35Speaker 1: twenty eighth, we're starting our new mentoring group. But it's
- 1:40Speaker 1: it's interesting because and whether or not anyone listening ever
- 1:44Speaker 1: does any of my things or not doesn't matter. But
- 1:48Speaker 1: the whole idea of Week one is called life design.
- 1:51Speaker 1: So it's just where we talk about this, this idea,
- 1:55Speaker 1: this really practical idea. I've gone, all right, well, this
- 1:58Speaker 1: is where I want to be or sorry, this is
- 1:59Speaker 1: where I am with my body, with my health, with
- 2:02Speaker 1: my life, with my career, with my money, with geographically
- 2:06Speaker 1: where I am you know, kind of a bit of
- 2:08Speaker 1: a self assessment, a bit of a stock take. No
- 2:12Speaker 1: judgment in there, just awareness, just acknowledgment and awareness and
- 2:15Speaker 1: then going all right, well, based on all of that stuff,
- 2:18Speaker 1: what's work and what's not? Am I where I want
- 2:20Speaker 1: to be, you know, literally or financially or physiologically or
- 2:24Speaker 1: emotionally or professionally or financially. Am I where I want
- 2:28Speaker 1: to be? And if I'm not well, where do I
- 2:29Speaker 1: want to be? Like? What does success look like for me?
- 2:33Speaker 1: Or a version of success or maybe just a version
- 2:35Speaker 1: of better? And then how do I build that? What
- 2:38Speaker 1: are my non negotiables around that? What are my drivers?
- 2:42Speaker 1: What's my reason? What's my why? And the amount of
- 2:46Speaker 1: people who say to me something like I've never even
- 2:51Speaker 1: thought about my life that kind of abstractly or methodically
- 2:56Speaker 1: or because most people and this is not an indictment,
- 3:01Speaker 1: this is I think just as a reflection of the
- 3:04Speaker 1: human condition for most people is we kind of get
- 3:06Speaker 1: up and do what we did yesterday, and then we
- 3:09Speaker 1: do that forever or a version of that, and then
- 3:11Speaker 1: some of us wake up at fifty and go, how
- 3:15Speaker 1: the fuck did I get here? You know, while never
- 3:18Speaker 1: really having made any big, significant kind of life changing
- 3:23Speaker 1: or life affecting decisions, but rather just and sometimes we
- 3:27Speaker 1: end up in a beautiful, amazing place. And some people
- 3:30Speaker 1: who have all the plans in the world still end
- 3:32Speaker 1: up in a shit place. So it's not that one
- 3:34Speaker 1: always equals the other. But just introducing this idea of
- 3:39Speaker 1: living a more conscious, intentional life rather than and a
- 3:43Speaker 1: proactive rather than a reactive life rather than that kind
- 3:47Speaker 1: of unconscious version. But yeah, you ever think about it.
- 3:51Speaker 2: Like that all the time, all the time. But I'm
- 3:55Speaker 2: in this space like you are. So this is our life,
- 3:58Speaker 2: you know. I am talking to peopleeople on how to
- 4:01Speaker 2: you know, get well if they're if they if they
- 4:03Speaker 2: have you know, got out of balance and they've got
- 4:05Speaker 2: a chronic illness and or you know, just living their
- 4:08Speaker 2: best life. And the reality is, the things that you teach, honestly,
- 4:11Speaker 2: are a lot of the tools that we use to
- 4:14Speaker 2: get our cellular health back so that we can get
- 4:17Speaker 2: our hormone levels back in check, or get those auto
- 4:20Speaker 2: antibodies down, get the inflammation, you know, whatever it may be.
- 4:23Speaker 2: But it's the sleep, it's the exercise, it's the diet,
- 4:25Speaker 2: it's that, you know, the water and not exposing ourselves
- 4:28Speaker 2: to all those toxins and alcohol and whatever it may be,
- 4:32Speaker 2: you know, stopping all of that. So these things are
- 4:35Speaker 2: crucial to feel amazing and to live your best life.
- 4:39Speaker 2: So I'm always thinking about it, and I have I've
- 4:43Speaker 2: had moments. You know, I have come out of chronic illness,
- 4:45Speaker 2: and there been times that I feel great, and even
- 4:48Speaker 2: though I'm well on paper, i'm well. You know, I
- 4:51Speaker 2: don't have a thyroid autoimmune disease anymore. There are so
- 4:54Speaker 2: many wonderful things in my life. The reason why I
- 4:58Speaker 2: wasn't one hundred percent sitting they're happy with you while
- 5:01Speaker 2: you're talking about your great day is because I feel
- 5:06Speaker 2: like I'm probably making a lot of excuses and I'm
- 5:09Speaker 2: sure you can help me during this session. And maybe
- 5:12Speaker 2: the listeners is that I do try to plan, but
- 5:16Speaker 2: I have gotten into not a new habit, but it's
- 5:19Speaker 2: definitely becoming too much of a consistent sort of excuses
- 5:24Speaker 2: and pushing things aside. In the morning, it's like, well,
- 5:26Speaker 2: I can't go to the gym because I really have
- 5:28Speaker 2: to get those emails done, or I didn't get that
- 5:30Speaker 2: recording done yesterday for that webinar and da da da dada,
- 5:34Speaker 2: so and I am very productive in the mornings, but
- 5:37Speaker 2: that's the time that I also need to train, and
- 5:40Speaker 2: it's just become too much of a you know, an excuse.
- 5:45Speaker 2: I'm making excuses. And you mentioned about waking up at
- 5:49Speaker 2: fifty you know, I'm only forty six, but I'll be
- 5:51Speaker 2: forty seven this year. I'm only three years away, and
- 5:53Speaker 2: I'm noticing some changes in my body, but I haven't
- 5:57Speaker 2: really seen before. Even though my goes up and down,
- 6:01Speaker 2: I've kind of gotten away with it a bit. Like
- 6:04Speaker 2: I can see don't tell anyone, don't tell like anyone
- 6:07Speaker 2: on the podcast, I can see some cellulite of my legs,
- 6:13Speaker 2: and I've been very lucky genetically. Maybe I'm lucky that
- 6:17Speaker 2: that hasn't been an issue. But I got to start
- 6:20Speaker 2: doing some things, and I can't keep checking emails in
- 6:23Speaker 2: the morning or doing this or doing that. And I'm wondering,
- 6:27Speaker 2: do you have a fixed schedule? I mean, you can't
- 6:29Speaker 2: have a fixed schedule. Life's always throwing things at you.
- 6:31Speaker 2: But help me, who has the knowledge, who knows what
- 6:35Speaker 2: I should do, but is not doing what I should do?
- 6:38Speaker 2: You know, what would what would you say to me? Craig?
- 6:41Speaker 1: So I would say to you, I mean, there's no
- 6:44Speaker 1: three step plan, you know that. And what I'm going
- 6:46Speaker 1: to suggest to you if you ask me tomorrow, I
- 6:48Speaker 1: might take a slightly different approach. And but I kind
- 6:53Speaker 1: of think I was talking about this exact thing to
- 6:56Speaker 1: someone yesterday and I said, you know, like, the one
- 7:01Speaker 1: thing you can't replace is your body. You can get
- 7:04Speaker 1: a new job, you can get more money, you can
- 7:06Speaker 1: get another husband or wife, and not that I'm suggesting
- 7:09Speaker 1: that anyone. You can you know, you can get a
- 7:12Speaker 1: new house, you can live someone else.
- 7:14Speaker 2: Sorry, I'm overthinking that getting a new husband. I was like,
- 7:17Speaker 2: my first thought was no, I would never do that.
- 7:19Speaker 2: And I was like, maybe you could do that. I
- 7:20Speaker 2: was like, no, we won't do that.
- 7:21Speaker 1: Oh definitely, I'm not suggesting you do. I think some
- 7:25Speaker 1: people should, some people shouldn't. But anyway, but I just
- 7:28Speaker 1: think that, like, I'm not genetically gifted. My genetics are
- 7:33Speaker 1: not terrible, but they're not great. I mean, Mum and
- 7:35Speaker 1: Dad have had you know, Mum's had cancer three times.
- 7:38Speaker 1: She's had a heart attack. Dad's had two heart attacks.
- 7:41Speaker 1: Dad's are diabetic. Bah bah bah blah. Like there's a
- 7:43Speaker 1: bunch of stuff in our family. Right. Having said that,
- 7:47Speaker 1: I was lucky, I think that I had a bit
- 7:49Speaker 1: of a revelation when I was young, and I kind
- 7:52Speaker 1: of started on the journey when I was fourteen and
- 7:54Speaker 1: really haven't deviated too much periodically. I have, but but
- 7:59Speaker 1: I kind of think like this. I think, all right,
- 8:02Speaker 1: without being weird or obsessed or a pain in the
- 8:05Speaker 1: ass to the rest of the world, what's the best
- 8:09Speaker 1: thing that I can do for me for my body?
- 8:11Speaker 1: What are the best things? And so I just go,
- 8:15Speaker 1: you know, like, I've got to walk at least ten
- 8:17Speaker 1: thousand steps a day, So every day I walk at
- 8:19Speaker 1: least doesn't matter if it's convenient, inconvenient. I'm in Melbourne,
- 8:23Speaker 1: I'm in state, I'm overseas. I've walked ten thousand steps
- 8:27Speaker 1: in an airport to get my steps in right, So
- 8:30Speaker 1: I do that. So I lift weights every day. If
- 8:31Speaker 1: I don't every day, if I have a miss, that's okay.
- 8:34Speaker 1: But for the most part, I don't drink. I don't smoke,
- 8:37Speaker 1: I don't do booze, I don't do drugs. I sleep
- 8:40Speaker 1: at least seven hours a night on average, most eight.
- 8:44Speaker 1: So what I do is I just try to tick
- 8:47Speaker 1: all the normal boxes. I try to manage stress, which
- 8:52Speaker 1: I very I think it's probably fifty percent genetics, and
- 8:56Speaker 1: although my mother's very fucking anxious, so maybe maybe it's
- 9:00Speaker 1: more just work. But I rarely get stressed or anxious.
- 9:03Speaker 1: I'm very grateful for that, and I have. I think
- 9:06Speaker 1: an important and often overlooked part of physical and mental
- 9:11Speaker 1: health is our social life. So I'm really fortunate that
- 9:15Speaker 1: I have healthy interactions and healthy relationships and people that
- 9:19Speaker 1: care about me. I think that impacts physical health more
- 9:22Speaker 1: than people understand. But long winded answer, I would say,
- 9:27Speaker 1: all right, if I followed you around and I just
- 9:32Speaker 1: I observed you over a week, not in a creepy way,
- 9:36Speaker 1: but in a public how you live, how you how
- 9:39Speaker 1: you move, how you interact with others, how you do
- 9:42Speaker 1: your job, would I get a really good insight into
- 9:45Speaker 1: what matters most to you, into your values. And if
- 9:49Speaker 1: you said to me one of my apart from looking
- 9:51Speaker 1: after your family and all that, but one of my
- 9:53Speaker 1: core values is personal health, physical health, mental health, then
- 9:58Speaker 1: I would say, is your daily protocol reflective of that?
- 10:03Speaker 1: Is your typical operating system in alignment with how important
- 10:07Speaker 1: you say these things are? Or are you stopping and starting?
- 10:12Speaker 1: So I think that when I say to people what
- 10:15Speaker 1: do you want to do? Be? Create? Change? What do
- 10:17Speaker 1: you want to do be? Create? Change? Very typical Craig
- 10:20Speaker 1: sentence or question. They'll go this, this, this and this,
- 10:24Speaker 1: and then I go great, now, based on that information,
- 10:27Speaker 1: what for you needs to be non fucking negotiable, right, absolute,
- 10:35Speaker 1: Like these things I am doing every day, not for
- 10:39Speaker 1: a little while, not for a few months, not when
- 10:41Speaker 1: it's sunny, not when I'm motivated. These are just things
- 10:44Speaker 1: that are They're part of my normal operating system now.
- 10:47Speaker 1: Not because I love to do them necessarily, or not
- 10:50Speaker 1: because they're painless or fun necessarily, but because these things
- 10:54Speaker 1: are what's required for me to live in my best body,
- 10:57Speaker 1: have my best health, and all those other things. So
- 11:00Speaker 1: I think it's about creating accountability for you. Even though
- 11:04Speaker 1: you're very smart, smarter than me for sure, more educated.
- 11:08Speaker 1: You know you are a genius, but you and I
- 11:10Speaker 1: both know smart people who do fucking stupid things. So
- 11:14Speaker 1: it's like having a gym membership doesn't guarantee you're going
- 11:17Speaker 1: to get in shape, because most people have a gym membership,
- 11:20Speaker 1: don't fucking go most people who are smart. I know
- 11:23Speaker 1: some people who are academically brilliant and practically fucking idiots, right,
- 11:27Speaker 1: and you know that too.
- 11:29Speaker 2: Look at the people that work in the health industry.
- 11:31Speaker 2: You know a lot of people that work in the
- 11:33Speaker 2: health industry, A lot of you know, doctors, that are
- 11:36Speaker 2: there to educate us are really really unwell.
- 11:40Speaker 1: Yeah, And I think like part of firstly, I want
- 11:43Speaker 1: to be healthy. I want my brain to work greater.
- 11:45Speaker 1: I want my body, my spine, my immune system, my gut,
- 11:49Speaker 1: by microbiome. I want all the bits of me to
- 11:53Speaker 1: be somewhere close to optimal for my potential. Right, I'll
- 11:57Speaker 1: never be optimal, but hopefully I'll be somewhere in the ballpark.
- 12:01Speaker 1: That's what I want. And then when I am that,
- 12:05Speaker 1: my brain works better, I'm more productive, I'm a better
- 12:07Speaker 1: human to be around. I'm less anxious, I think more clearly,
- 12:12Speaker 1: I'm a better problem solver, I'm a better conflict resolver,
- 12:15Speaker 1: I'm a better communicator, I'm a better son. Right, so
- 12:19Speaker 1: me managing me is a gift to the people around me,
- 12:22Speaker 1: because when I don't manage me, I'm a prick. And
- 12:26Speaker 1: I don't want to be a prick. I want to
- 12:28Speaker 1: be great at as great as I can be for
- 12:30Speaker 1: my ability, which is limited. But I want to be
- 12:33Speaker 1: as good as I can be. And I think there's
- 12:36Speaker 1: I'll shut up after this, but I think there's a
- 12:38Speaker 1: real mindset in our culture which is that, And it
- 12:42Speaker 1: might not necessarily be overt, but it's definitely there is that,
- 12:47Speaker 1: you know, we make decisions and think about what people
- 12:52Speaker 1: should and shouldn't do based on a number on a calendar.
- 12:57Speaker 1: Whereas my goal, one of my goals is to be
- 13:01Speaker 1: better at a lot of things when I'm sixty five
- 13:03Speaker 1: than right now and I'm sixty one, And because of
- 13:07Speaker 1: course there's an inevitability of physiological, psychological, and cognitive decline
- 13:14Speaker 1: over time, but the rate at which that happens, of course,
- 13:19Speaker 1: is largely up to me. Choices, behaviors, habits, lifestyle, thinking,
- 13:24Speaker 1: operating system right, And so I'm not unrealistic, I'm not diluted,
- 13:30Speaker 1: but I go, well, fuck, could I actually when I'm
- 13:32Speaker 1: sixty five? Could I be as strong as I am
- 13:35Speaker 1: now or a little bit stronger? Could I have the
- 13:37Speaker 1: same bone density or better? Could I have better flexibility
- 13:40Speaker 1: and range of movement? Could I have less aches and pains?
- 13:43Speaker 1: Could I know more stuff? Could my brain work as
- 13:45Speaker 1: well or better? Is that possible? And the answer is
- 13:49Speaker 1: for most of that yes, Then the question is cool,
- 13:53Speaker 1: how do I do that? What's the price I need
- 13:56Speaker 1: to pay? And will I pay the price? I feel
- 13:58Speaker 1: like a lot of people deny want the top of
- 14:00Speaker 1: the mountain, but they don't want the climb. Like everyone's
- 14:03Speaker 1: enamored with winning. Everyone's enamored with success. And that's why
- 14:08Speaker 1: we live in a culture where quick fixes and magic
- 14:10Speaker 1: pills and two minute abs sell like a motherfucker, because
- 14:14Speaker 1: when you and I get on our respective high horses
- 14:17Speaker 1: and go look, it's not going to be fun, quick, easy,
- 14:19Speaker 1: or painless. They just swipe and go next. I don't
- 14:23Speaker 1: want that. I don't want to do that. I want
- 14:25Speaker 1: I want to. I want to fucking I want o zembic,
- 14:29Speaker 1: I want, I want.
- 14:31Speaker 2: I've got a few of those people. I've got a
- 14:33Speaker 2: few of those, but I'm working with them right now,
- 14:34Speaker 2: not because I've recommended it, because they are my clients
- 14:37Speaker 2: and have gone down that path.
- 14:38Speaker 1: Yeah, and let me just clarify, and for some people
- 14:43Speaker 1: that's the way to go, but not all. You know.
- 14:46Speaker 2: So I have one right now, and she's so nutrient deplete.
- 14:50Speaker 2: She's like we reviewed her food diary, and you know,
- 14:54Speaker 2: I hope she's not. I would never say her name anyway,
- 14:56Speaker 2: but we know she can't eat a lot of food
- 14:58Speaker 2: because obviously she's having these medications. When we actually looked
- 15:01Speaker 2: at the amount of sugar. Her sugar intake every single
- 15:04Speaker 2: day was higher than her protein. I said to her, yes,
- 15:07Speaker 2: you're losing weight, but you're hardly eating any food and
- 15:10Speaker 2: look at your sugar, and you'd be losing all this muscle.
- 15:12Speaker 2: I mean, she's lost sixteen kilo. She ticks the boxes
- 15:16Speaker 2: morbidly obese. All this metabolic stuff was happening your things
- 15:19Speaker 2: in her body inflammation. I actually when she decided to
- 15:23Speaker 2: do that, she only recently was my new client. We're
- 15:25Speaker 2: about to do all this stuff. And then her GP
- 15:27Speaker 2: put her on it. So she came back and said,
- 15:29Speaker 2: I've actually started this. I haven't done what you said.
- 15:31Speaker 2: It all happened quickly, and I was like, you know what,
- 15:33Speaker 2: I think this is actually right for you. You but
- 15:36Speaker 2: you're going to work with me and do all these
- 15:37Speaker 2: other things. She's really struggling with the things that I'm
- 15:40Speaker 2: telling her to do. She's not taking her supplements. She's
- 15:43Speaker 2: still eating some quick and easy foods, drinking a soft drink,
- 15:48Speaker 2: one soft drink, only one. She used to have more
- 15:49Speaker 2: one soft drink. I said to all she has to do,
- 15:52Speaker 2: and this probably comes back to what I'm asking you, Craig,
- 15:54Speaker 2: I said, all I want you to do right now
- 15:56Speaker 2: between now and seeing me in the next two weeks,
- 15:58Speaker 2: is just drop that one off drink, I said, because
- 16:01Speaker 2: one all that sugar's gone. We're going to get a
- 16:04Speaker 2: little bit more protein, you know, eat food. I want
- 16:06Speaker 2: you to eat something small, and we're making that one change.
- 16:10Speaker 2: But that sort almost brings me back to where I'm at.
- 16:13Speaker 2: I kind of sort of throw out, Oh, I've been
- 16:15Speaker 2: lucky enough to get away with certain things at this
- 16:17Speaker 2: age of forty six. I mean, the truth is, I
- 16:19Speaker 2: do eat relatively well most of the time. I do
- 16:23Speaker 2: take care of myself and so and genetically I'm not
- 16:28Speaker 2: great either. I've got FTO fat mass and obesity gene.
- 16:30Speaker 2: I put on weight pretty quickly. I can lose it
- 16:32Speaker 2: when I do the right things. We all can. But
- 16:35Speaker 2: you also talked about cognition, and I think what is
- 16:37Speaker 2: great about everything you were talking about and what I
- 16:40Speaker 2: was doing in that and the listeners to a probably
- 16:42Speaker 2: week which bit can I jump onto? That's going to
- 16:45Speaker 2: help me focus on what's important and one of the
- 16:49Speaker 2: biggest things that's really important for me and you know
- 16:52Speaker 2: this and others might remember it if they've listened to
- 16:54Speaker 2: other podcasts, is you know by in a few years time,
- 16:57Speaker 2: we'll actually right now, my mum was already starting to
- 16:59Speaker 2: have symptoms around cognitive health, mental health stuff, you know,
- 17:02Speaker 2: starting to hallucinate. We thought she was going a bit crazy.
- 17:05Speaker 2: We thought it was menopause, didn't know it was dementia.
- 17:07Speaker 2: But by fifty you know, she was not okay. So
- 17:11Speaker 2: and I have those genes. I've got the apoe four
- 17:14Speaker 2: ahalil I. You know, we have new research that I
- 17:16Speaker 2: came out last year that basically says, by sixty five,
- 17:20Speaker 2: the amount of amyloid plaques that people with my genes
- 17:23Speaker 2: have is just huge compared to others. But there is
- 17:26Speaker 2: so much I can do about it. And I'm lucky
- 17:28Speaker 2: that I have that knowledge because I can do so much.
- 17:32Speaker 2: I might, I might not ever stop myself getting it.
- 17:36Speaker 2: But I truly believe, wholeheartedly, not just out of a
- 17:39Speaker 2: belief from you know, from evidence and from what we
- 17:43Speaker 2: see in the published literature and studies and everything that
- 17:45Speaker 2: I see firsthand with health, that I can at least
- 17:49Speaker 2: give myself another ten, if not twenty, healthy years if
- 17:53Speaker 2: I do the right thing and d yep. And for me,
- 17:57Speaker 2: I think some of these little body changes are probably
- 17:59Speaker 2: a good thing because it does highlight and go. Well,
- 18:02Speaker 2: you haven't been doing the strength training, you know. I
- 18:04Speaker 2: remember the days I used to complain about my quad
- 18:06Speaker 2: muscles because they popped out on the side and I
- 18:08Speaker 2: didn't like how my muscles looked. I don't have that
- 18:11Speaker 2: muscle in my quads anymore. It's like, hang on, where's
- 18:14Speaker 2: all that muscle gone? Well? Actually, have you been doing
- 18:16Speaker 2: all the strength training like you used to? And you
- 18:18Speaker 2: know I've I've let life get in the way and
- 18:20Speaker 2: know I'm tired after I travel overseas. You know, I'm
- 18:23Speaker 2: prioritizing stuff in the morning with the kids, or prioritizing work.
- 18:26Speaker 2: And the truth is I actually have to prioritize the exercise.
- 18:31Speaker 2: Everything else isn't too bad. I'm very much focused on sleep.
- 18:35Speaker 2: Don't really drink alcohol anymore. As I said, nutritions pretty good,
- 18:39Speaker 2: always has been. But the exercise is the thing that
- 18:43Speaker 2: has dropped off. And I think for me to get
- 18:47Speaker 2: out of this, like I just said, with that, with
- 18:50Speaker 2: that patience dropping the coke, I think it has to
- 18:51Speaker 2: do something really easy that almost is a no brain.
- 18:54Speaker 2: I think because I used to be so fit and
- 18:56Speaker 2: so strong, sometimes there's an element of disappointment because I
- 19:00Speaker 2: can't train at that level. But I've just got to
- 19:03Speaker 2: be happy doing something, you know, and then get back
- 19:05Speaker 2: there so that at sixty five, just like you, I
- 19:08Speaker 2: am stronger than I am right now, and I want that.
- 19:11Speaker 2: I want that to and I can be if I know,
- 19:13Speaker 2: if I do the right things, I could be stronger
- 19:15Speaker 2: at sixty five than what I am now at forty six.
- 19:18Speaker 2: So yeah, look what.
- 19:20Speaker 1: Gives me hope for you and me and for the
- 19:24Speaker 1: general public is like I get asked all the time,
- 19:27Speaker 1: not that I'm fucking special, right, but people are interested
- 19:30Speaker 1: in how I live and how I eat, and how
- 19:32Speaker 1: often I train, and at least once once a gig,
- 19:36Speaker 1: like when I do a corporate gig and i'm up
- 19:39Speaker 1: the front. I don't wear suits much, but if i'm
- 19:41Speaker 1: if I'm in a pair of jeans and a T shirt,
- 19:43Speaker 1: which is my normal kind of standard. Fair, It's clear
- 19:47Speaker 1: that I'm in quite good shape for my age, right.
- 19:50Speaker 1: I don't mean that to be on any level egotistical,
- 19:52Speaker 1: but I'm not out of shape. I'm quite lean. There's
- 19:54Speaker 1: veins and shit going on in muscles, and people like, fuck,
- 19:57Speaker 1: how old are you? And I tell them, and then
- 19:59Speaker 1: I say, but look, I don't have great genetics, by
- 20:02Speaker 1: the way. I was a morbidly OBEs kid, by the way,
- 20:05Speaker 1: you know. And I tell them about the normality and
- 20:07Speaker 1: the mediocrity of me, and I say, but this is
- 20:12Speaker 1: what I do because guys, more guys than women, ask
- 20:16Speaker 1: me about what do you eat? How often? Because they go, fuck,
- 20:19Speaker 1: I want to be I want to be jacked. So
- 20:22Speaker 1: I tell them what I do and then nine out
- 20:24Speaker 1: of ten go, oh, fuck that I'm not doing that
- 20:26Speaker 1: because they want they want the result, they don't want
- 20:30Speaker 1: the work. And I know that I'm a fucking broken
- 20:33Speaker 1: record with this. But the amount of people who know
- 20:35Speaker 1: what to do but don't do what they know because
- 20:39Speaker 1: what they should be doing is, as I always say,
- 20:42Speaker 1: not comfortable, quick, easy, or painless, right, And so I
- 20:45Speaker 1: will just keep asking different people till we get an
- 20:48Speaker 1: answer that's comfortable or just you know, we'll try another pill,
- 20:51Speaker 1: we'll try another quick fix, we'll try another shortcut, we'll
- 20:53Speaker 1: try another fuck whatever, and it just and the problem
- 21:00Speaker 1: is that in this all this choosing of let's call
- 21:04Speaker 1: it the easy path, which, by the way, is an illusion, because.
- 21:08Speaker 2: It is an illusion if you don't mind me, don't
- 21:11Speaker 2: mind me jumping in. Like even my patient I talked
- 21:13Speaker 2: to you about yesterday, you know, she's on track for
- 21:17Speaker 2: more health issues down the track. Yes, she's lost weight,
- 21:21Speaker 2: and that is great because metabolically she was you know,
- 21:24Speaker 2: she's young too, to be that, to be that, to
- 21:27Speaker 2: be that big was dangerous. But this losing sixteen kilos
- 21:31Speaker 2: on this medication over this last few months actually isn't
- 21:36Speaker 2: long term health. And she's going to suffer because there's
- 21:39Speaker 2: the protein deficiency. So she when she eventually comes off
- 21:41Speaker 2: the medication, you can't stay on this stuff lifelong. She's
- 21:44Speaker 2: lost her muscle and these so she's already she said,
- 21:46Speaker 2: she's got a constant sore throat. She's feeling so run down.
- 21:50Speaker 2: You know, she's going to get sick and other things
- 21:52Speaker 2: can come about from that. I mean, I've had another
- 21:54Speaker 2: patient who went into hospital with chronic pancreatitis. The doctor
- 21:57Speaker 2: didn't tell her that one of the side effects is
- 21:59Speaker 2: pancreatic answer, so she came off the medication straightaway. She's
- 22:02Speaker 2: a well known radio host actually, but yeah, so you
- 22:06Speaker 2: know this quick fix is not is not the magic pill.
- 22:11Speaker 2: It comes with consequences and the journey that you and
- 22:15Speaker 2: I you know, offer people, even though it can be
- 22:17Speaker 2: a little bit longer, and even though you know we
- 22:19Speaker 2: have our eye have like I'm expressing my struggles with
- 22:22Speaker 2: it right now, the truth is that's what makes you
- 22:24Speaker 2: feel better and that's what gives you true health because
- 22:26Speaker 2: it's not just about weight and the physical stuff. Mean,
- 22:28Speaker 2: it's great to look good. You know, you look great
- 22:31Speaker 2: with your muscles. I can't believe I disclosed the freaking cell.
- 22:33Speaker 2: You're like, but we always and it's not a podcast
- 22:35Speaker 2: if I don't say something stupid about myself and tell
- 22:37Speaker 2: the world. But you know that's what I focus on.
- 22:40Speaker 2: But the truth is, it's so much more than that.
- 22:43Speaker 2: It's so much it's that being present with your family,
- 22:45Speaker 2: with yourself, enjoying life. And that comes from having a
- 22:48Speaker 2: brain that works, a body that works. Yeah, so so
- 22:51Speaker 2: much more than just losing a few kilos. I'm going
- 22:55Speaker 2: to get off my high horse now.
- 22:57Speaker 1: So I'm doctor Denise. You and I are on the
- 22:59Speaker 1: same but look, and there's another really important part to
- 23:03Speaker 1: this is when you when you choose the what you
- 23:09Speaker 1: think is the easy option, what you think is the comfortable,
- 23:12Speaker 1: quick fix of fuck, I can I can actually hack this. Right,
- 23:17Speaker 1: When you are constantly avoiding the thing that is hard
- 23:20Speaker 1: or uncomfortable or uncertain and unfamiliar, you rob yourself of
- 23:25Speaker 1: the opportunity to build strength and to build resilience, and
- 23:28Speaker 1: to build understanding and skill and capacity to be able
- 23:31Speaker 1: to do hard things in hard times. Right And so
- 23:36Speaker 1: when the shit does hit the fan, and it fucking
- 23:39Speaker 1: hits the fan for everybody, because you've constantly taken the
- 23:43Speaker 1: easy option, now you have no strength, Now you have
- 23:47Speaker 1: no adaptability, Now you have no resilience because you've never
- 23:51Speaker 1: chosen hard. You've always chosen convenience over effectiveness, or the
- 23:56Speaker 1: easy path over the right path. Right now, I don't
- 24:00Speaker 1: think we all need to be up to our next
- 24:02Speaker 1: in adversity fucking day in day out. But I know,
- 24:06Speaker 1: and you know, like when I'm working hard, when I'm
- 24:09Speaker 1: doing hard shit, whether it's hard shit in the gym,
- 24:11Speaker 1: or hardshit in business or hardship shit in doing a PhD,
- 24:16Speaker 1: It's like, this is where I become better, This is
- 24:19Speaker 1: where I build me. And you know, by choosing the
- 24:24Speaker 1: magic pill, whatever that looks like in real life, that
- 24:27Speaker 1: metaphoric magic pill, you are losing over the long term
- 24:32Speaker 1: and gaining something maybe in the short term. But as
- 24:37Speaker 1: we said, it's an illusion, and that is that, you know,
- 24:41Speaker 1: like the amount of people that I've had, we've spoken
- 24:45Speaker 1: about this maybe two times, I reckon, but you know
- 24:47Speaker 1: how that that whole thing rate of perceived exertion, how
- 24:51Speaker 1: hard we think we're working in the gym, you know,
- 24:53Speaker 1: and we tell ourselves this story, and the amount of
- 24:57Speaker 1: people that have gone to me when I say, all right,
- 24:59Speaker 1: so what do you I think you're working out right now?
- 25:01Speaker 1: And they say eight or nine? And I know they're
- 25:03Speaker 1: working at four right just because I know, And I go, okay,
- 25:08Speaker 1: so I don't want to you know, this actually sounds
- 25:11Speaker 1: like an insult.
- 25:12Speaker 2: It's not.
- 25:12Speaker 1: It's a compliment. You're not working at eight or nine.
- 25:15Speaker 1: You've got no fucking idea what eight or nine looks
- 25:17Speaker 1: like right at the minute. So here's what I want
- 25:21Speaker 1: you to do. And so the person who does ten
- 25:23Speaker 1: reps on something and then tells me that was real hard,
- 25:27Speaker 1: And then I say, I want we're going to do
- 25:29Speaker 1: the same way I want you to do twenty thirty
- 25:32Speaker 1: forty reps. And they look at me like I'm fucking strange,
- 25:37Speaker 1: And I say I promise you you've got no idea
- 25:41Speaker 1: of your potential. And then nearly every time that person
- 25:46Speaker 1: will do thirty or forty reps, the person that a
- 25:49Speaker 1: minute ago could only do ten and might struggle on
- 25:52Speaker 1: twelve or thirteen. So you tell them a new story,
- 25:56Speaker 1: and the story is based I mean, I'm not guessing
- 25:59Speaker 1: like I'm pretty good at that shit, right, because I've
- 26:01Speaker 1: been in that position so many times. Then all of
- 26:04Speaker 1: a sudden, and it's not even about doing the forty reps.
- 26:07Speaker 1: It's not about the physiology. It's about the psychological consequence
- 26:10Speaker 1: of somebody going, ah, my body's great. My problem is
- 26:15Speaker 1: my thinking. How do I get my thinking out of
- 26:19Speaker 1: the way? How do I get my thinking out of
- 26:21Speaker 1: the way of my body's potential for amazingness? Like you
- 26:27Speaker 1: know it the shit that we can do. And this
- 26:30Speaker 1: is not me trying to be positive or encouraging, but
- 26:35Speaker 1: you know, I go in the gym and I do
- 26:37Speaker 1: a set of chins, and I'm sixty one without great genetics,
- 26:40Speaker 1: and I can do twelve or fifteen. Do twelve or
- 26:42Speaker 1: fifteen chins.
- 26:44Speaker 2: You go get it, And you're lifting a lot of
- 26:46Speaker 2: muscle too, right, So when you think about the weight
- 26:49Speaker 2: that you're it's it's a weight because you're full of muscle.
- 26:52Speaker 1: And I'm not boasting. I'm just saying, actually, what I
- 26:55Speaker 1: can do, Go get the average thirty year old from
- 26:58Speaker 1: fucking downtown wherever and say now. And that's not because
- 27:01Speaker 1: they don't have the capacity. That maybe got even better
- 27:04Speaker 1: genetics than me, but it's just because they're not doing that.
- 27:08Speaker 1: And if you said too, like I have this really
- 27:11Speaker 1: common experience, I'll have whatever, two hundred people in a
- 27:14Speaker 1: room and I'll go, put up your hand if you'd
- 27:16Speaker 1: like to be a bit stronger, a bit leaner, a
- 27:18Speaker 1: bit fitter, a bit healthier, Like every hand goes up,
- 27:22Speaker 1: but none of them are doing the work to create that,
- 27:24Speaker 1: Like they all want it, but they don't want to do,
- 27:27Speaker 1: like they want the outcome, but not the journey. And
- 27:29Speaker 1: then you go, all right, now you all just told
- 27:32Speaker 1: me voluntarily that you want your body to be different.
- 27:37Speaker 1: Who's going to do what's required? Like, who's going to
- 27:40Speaker 1: take that journey? And I don't say that to make
- 27:43Speaker 1: people uncomfortable. I just say that to underline the fact
- 27:48Speaker 1: that all the talking, all the theory, all the research,
- 27:51Speaker 1: all the YouTube fucking watching, all the U Project. Listening
- 27:56Speaker 1: all good, but none of it's doing the work. Like ultimately, Ultimately,
- 28:03Speaker 1: I think, and I said this, I had a podcast
- 28:06Speaker 1: with one of our regulars, Bobby, just before I said, ultimately,
- 28:10Speaker 1: what really matters, I think for a lot of people
- 28:13Speaker 1: is what we do when no one's looking, when no
- 28:15Speaker 1: one's cheering, when no one gives a fuck about you
- 28:17Speaker 1: and your cellar, like Denise, when no one's going, ah,
- 28:20Speaker 1: go you you're fucking fuck all that, fuck all that.
- 28:23Speaker 1: Show me what you can do when no one cares.
- 28:27Speaker 1: Show me what you can do in the darkness, and
- 28:29Speaker 1: then bring that into the light, and then people will
- 28:32Speaker 1: see show me what you can do when you don't
- 28:35Speaker 1: feel like it. You know, we have incredible potential, but
- 28:41Speaker 1: our mind, our laziness, our procrastination, our bullshit gets in
- 28:46Speaker 1: the way.
- 28:47Speaker 2: I want to ask you about that. I've got two things.
- 28:51Speaker 2: I want to ask them and try to remember the
- 28:52Speaker 2: other one. So I focus on one thing at a
- 28:54Speaker 2: time because they're two different things. And the listeners like,
- 28:56Speaker 2: what is you're talking about? So the brain stuff, right,
- 29:00Speaker 2: you're doing a PhD, this sort of neuropsychology stuff, and
- 29:06Speaker 2: you know, for someone like myself who honestly does have
- 29:09Speaker 2: the knowledge and not even not even the knowledge about
- 29:14Speaker 2: you know, exercise is good for me. We've actually got
- 29:17Speaker 2: studies to show that it reduces mild cognitive decline, not
- 29:20Speaker 2: even just in the in the sense of reducing risk
- 29:23Speaker 2: for you know, cardiovascular disease, cognitive decline stuff. We actually
- 29:27Speaker 2: have some studies to show it can once you even
- 29:29Speaker 2: start to get these memory disorders, exercise can reverse that.
- 29:34Speaker 2: So we have so many good studies without a doubt.
- 29:37Speaker 2: I know this, But why even though I want this,
- 29:42Speaker 2: I know this? What's going on in my little brain
- 29:45Speaker 2: in the morning that tells me, Yes, my emails are
- 29:48Speaker 2: important and my business is important? Like is it some
- 29:52Speaker 2: kind of weird thing or I'm not putting myself Like,
- 29:55Speaker 2: is there is there some unconsciously thing. Is it a
- 29:58Speaker 2: safety thing or is it a self worth thing? Is
- 30:00Speaker 2: there something under that that people tend to go to
- 30:07Speaker 2: a place and sort of is it a protective mechanism?
- 30:10Speaker 2: I don't know what I'm asking you, do you know
- 30:11Speaker 2: what I'm I'm trying to get too, Like why is
- 30:14Speaker 2: my brain? Why? Because I just go sometimes I go
- 30:16Speaker 2: denise you and then there's stuff at the time I'm
- 30:19Speaker 2: stuffing around trying to do emails or something. Anyway, you
- 30:21Speaker 2: probably could have actually gone to the gym as well,
- 30:23Speaker 2: because you've just done this and you've done that, and
- 30:26Speaker 2: can you give me some insight, Craig Harper, Yeah, one
- 30:29Speaker 2: hundred percent.
- 30:29Speaker 1: All right, So a couple of things I want to
- 30:31Speaker 1: talk about. So part of the answer to your question
- 30:34Speaker 1: is that we live in moments, and in the moment,
- 30:38Speaker 1: quite often we just choose the thing that's nice, we
- 30:41Speaker 1: choose the thing that's comfy, we choose the thing that's familiar,
- 30:45Speaker 1: and we do tell ourselves, yeah, I'll get to that later,
- 30:49Speaker 1: but we tend not to get to that later quite often, right,
- 30:52Speaker 1: So there's that immediacy of you know, like, why do
- 30:55Speaker 1: people who are out of shape physically, let's just use
- 30:59Speaker 1: that to let's they're out of shape, they're unhealthy, They've
- 31:02Speaker 1: got lots of issues as a result of their diet
- 31:05Speaker 1: and their lifestyle, and they know they know that this,
- 31:09Speaker 1: this shitty diet is sabotaging their fucking lifespan, health span
- 31:14Speaker 1: for everything, quality of life, fuck everything, But in the moment,
- 31:19Speaker 1: they still go to the bakery by two pies, two
- 31:21Speaker 1: snot blocks, and a chocolate milk, right, Like why, Well,
- 31:26Speaker 1: it's because all of that shit tastes amazing to them
- 31:29Speaker 1: in the moment, and so it hijacks their dopamine and
- 31:33Speaker 1: it's fucking amazing or their brain and it's like, fuck,
- 31:36Speaker 1: this is great and I feel incredible and this shit
- 31:38Speaker 1: is magic and I'm having a bad day and this
- 31:41Speaker 1: takes me out of it and I'm a bit flat
- 31:42Speaker 1: and I'm a bit depressed and fuck it. He fuck
- 31:45Speaker 1: it's a drug, Like it's a way to create a
- 31:47Speaker 1: biochemical shift that feels good. And we love feeling good
- 31:51Speaker 1: and we don't love, you know. And the other part
- 31:53Speaker 1: of the story is too like if that story right,
- 31:57Speaker 1: that that guy or girl that does that, Now, if
- 32:00Speaker 1: that guy or girl in the moment instead has a
- 32:02Speaker 1: fucking chicken salad, well the joy ain't there for them.
- 32:07Speaker 1: Might be for you or me, but it ain't there
- 32:09Speaker 1: for them because they want the other meal. But also
- 32:12Speaker 1: what doesn't happen is instant weight loss or fat loss.
- 32:16Speaker 1: So the story is, fuck it, I'm going to eat
- 32:18Speaker 1: the snot block and the pies and the beg M
- 32:19Speaker 1: and I'll start tomorrow. And that becomes a twenty three
- 32:22Speaker 1: year story, This constant bullshitting ourselves that we're about to start,
- 32:28Speaker 1: going to start very soon. So many people that I
- 32:31Speaker 1: talk to about the last meal these questions, and today
- 32:35Speaker 1: is never the day that they're going to start. It's
- 32:38Speaker 1: always soon, but not today. It's always next Monday. It's
- 32:41Speaker 1: always when the kids are finished school, holidays, or it's
- 32:44Speaker 1: always when you know their ankle's better or something, but
- 32:47Speaker 1: it's not now. So we have this incredible capacity to
- 32:51Speaker 1: rationalize stupid fucking behavior.
- 32:56Speaker 2: Yeah, so that's resonating with me. I think it's the
- 32:58Speaker 2: rationalizing because I'm like, oh, I've got I really have
- 33:00Speaker 2: got all this work to do.
- 33:02Speaker 1: We can make excuses sound like reason, especially you you're smart.
- 33:06Speaker 1: I can. I can convince myself with complete bullshit because
- 33:11Speaker 1: because I'm a good communicator, I can make it sound
- 33:14Speaker 1: like fucking science. It's just garbage. And there's have you
- 33:19Speaker 1: heard you know, there's a really interesting thing that we
- 33:24Speaker 1: may have spoken about. I can't remember that. Huberman talks
- 33:27Speaker 1: about the anterior mid singulate cortex. Have you heard about that?
- 33:31Speaker 2: We have not talked about it? Share it with me.
- 33:33Speaker 1: Yeah. So it's part of the brain. It's called the
- 33:36Speaker 1: anterior mid singulate cortex. Folks, AMCC. So it's part of
- 33:39Speaker 1: the brain that when you do hard stuff, it grows.
- 33:44Speaker 1: It literally creates new neural pathways and it physically gets bigger.
- 33:49Speaker 1: And it doesn't even matter what the thing is. It
- 33:52Speaker 1: could be vacuuming, it could be changing your fucking doner cover.
- 33:56Speaker 1: It could be going for a run, it could be
- 33:58Speaker 1: ringing your mum and having a hard common station. But
- 34:01Speaker 1: there are lots of things that we don't want to
- 34:03Speaker 1: do that we know that we should do. And as
- 34:05Speaker 1: we lean into this, like a really simple silly example
- 34:10Speaker 1: is sometimes I'll go downstairs and I've had a big day,
- 34:13Speaker 1: I've been up since four thirty or five, and there's like,
- 34:17Speaker 1: you know, a few dishes and I just want to go.
- 34:19Speaker 1: It's only me. No one's going to see them. I'll
- 34:21Speaker 1: wash them in the morning. They're in the sink. It's like,
- 34:24Speaker 1: and I'll never leave them in the sink. I know
- 34:27Speaker 1: no one's going to see it. I know it makes
- 34:29Speaker 1: no difference to anyone, but I will always wash them.
- 34:33Speaker 1: I'll wash them, i'll drive them, I'll put them away
- 34:36Speaker 1: because weak meat wants to leave them there. And it's like,
- 34:40Speaker 1: what we're I believe what we're doing. When we're leaning
- 34:43Speaker 1: into things that are somewhat uncomfortable be mentally, emotionally, physically,
- 34:50Speaker 1: we're actually building our capacity to function at a higher
- 34:53Speaker 1: level in the middle of you know, the shit that
- 34:56Speaker 1: life throws at us. And I think like if were you,
- 35:00Speaker 1: if I were coaching you right now, I would say,
- 35:02Speaker 1: tell me one thing that you're going to do for
- 35:04Speaker 1: the next seven days, a new thing, and you're going
- 35:07Speaker 1: to do it seven days in a row. And it's
- 35:09Speaker 1: not an if or maybe, or if things are okay,
- 35:12Speaker 1: or if the kids this, or my husband that. What
- 35:14Speaker 1: would that thing be for you? You've got fourteen hundred and
- 35:17Speaker 1: forty minutes in a day. What's that one thing that's
- 35:21Speaker 1: starting today you will do and tell me and the
- 35:23Speaker 1: listeners and you'll commit to and actually do it.
- 35:26Speaker 2: I am going to do it. I am going to
- 35:28Speaker 2: commit to going to the gym in the morning, like
- 35:30Speaker 2: waking up and just going straight away, just getting to
- 35:32Speaker 2: the gym. I think sometimes I, as I said, we're
- 35:34Speaker 2: talking about rationalizing, I sit there and go, oh, that class,
- 35:37Speaker 2: isn't it a good time? Like there's always these things
- 35:39Speaker 2: I've just got to go. The thing is I used
- 35:41Speaker 2: to be a trainer. I've got sirt three and four
- 35:43Speaker 2: don't work in the industry anymore, but I've started exercise physiology.
- 35:46Speaker 2: I don't actually need someone to tell me what to
- 35:48Speaker 2: do or be in a class like I can just
- 35:50Speaker 2: rock up in the morning, you know, And that used
- 35:53Speaker 2: to be my life. So I am really looking forward
- 35:56Speaker 2: to the next podcast actually to tell you where I have.
- 36:00Speaker 2: But I'll do it for the next seven days because
- 36:03Speaker 2: I know once you start doing these things too, it
- 36:05Speaker 2: does get easier. And then there are points in my
- 36:08Speaker 2: life where sometimes I go, how did I not do this?
- 36:11Speaker 2: How did I not? Then you start to go, how
- 36:13Speaker 2: did I fall out of the habit? But we do
- 36:15Speaker 2: fall out of the habit, and again, you know, even
- 36:17Speaker 2: myself with all this knowledge and having, you know, having
- 36:20Speaker 2: this desire to be around for my kids and my
- 36:22Speaker 2: family and all this kind of stuff, I still drop off.
- 36:25Speaker 2: So for the next seven days, I'm going to wake
- 36:27Speaker 2: up in the morning and go straight to the gym.
- 36:29Speaker 2: I don't care what's on or not on. I'm just
- 36:31Speaker 2: going to go because once I'm there, I'll be moving
- 36:33Speaker 2: my body, feeling better.
- 36:35Speaker 1: I'm going to be your accountability partner. So every day
- 36:38Speaker 1: after you've been to the gym. You send me a
- 36:40Speaker 1: message and this is what I want. How long you
- 36:44Speaker 1: trained for and what you did? Just a snapshot. So
- 36:47Speaker 1: went to the gym, train my legs and whatever, train
- 36:51Speaker 1: my legs and core. I was there for forty minutes,
- 36:55Speaker 1: or I did twenty minutes on the treadmill incline walking
- 36:58Speaker 1: at six and a half and I did twenty minutes
- 37:00Speaker 1: of upper body weight. It's just a snapshot, and I
- 37:03Speaker 1: will respond every day. So I'll be your accountability partner
- 37:06Speaker 1: for the next seven days. You know what I think?
- 37:10Speaker 1: I think for that speaking to this, like you know
- 37:14Speaker 1: if you lived over the road for me in some
- 37:16Speaker 1: alternate reality and I said, hey, I want you to
- 37:18Speaker 1: train three days a week with me, because I train
- 37:21Speaker 1: every day, So pick three days that work for you.
- 37:24Speaker 1: There's no way that you wouldn't do that, right of course. Yeah,
- 37:29Speaker 1: so you go. Fuck I'm gonna train with Harps three days.
- 37:31Speaker 1: I go. You pick the day, you pick the time.
- 37:33Speaker 1: I'll work around you. Now, barring some legit reason, there's
- 37:39Speaker 1: no day that you wouldn't turn up. So let's remove
- 37:43Speaker 1: me from the equation and just have that mindset. Do
- 37:47Speaker 1: you know what I'm saying like, it's the thing if
- 37:51Speaker 1: if I'm meeting you and I'm training you or helping
- 37:54Speaker 1: you or encouraging you, you don't want to let me down.
- 37:57Speaker 1: So you well, hey, Champ, don't let you down.
- 38:01Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, it's so true. When I lived in Adelaide,
- 38:03Speaker 2: there was a group of us. This is obviously pre
- 38:05Speaker 2: kids and stuff, but there was a group of us
- 38:07Speaker 2: that all trained together. Not all of us at once,
- 38:10Speaker 2: but we had training buddies, like I had my friend
- 38:12Speaker 2: Olgie Michelle, Like, we were all into fitness, and you know,
- 38:16Speaker 2: we would meet each other at the gym or for
- 38:18Speaker 2: this class, or to go for a run, or to
- 38:19Speaker 2: go to the park and just do a bit of
- 38:21Speaker 2: a workout, you know. You know, even back then we
- 38:23Speaker 2: were young and sort of you know, socializing. But even
- 38:25Speaker 2: the next day after you know, going out on Saturday
- 38:27Speaker 2: out and drinking. We would go to Mount Lofty on
- 38:29Speaker 2: a Sunday, didn't matter how long we're out for what
- 38:32Speaker 2: we did. We'd meet on a Sunday morning and we
- 38:34Speaker 2: would either run or walk Mount Lofty, like we just
- 38:37Speaker 2: these are the things we did. And I think when
- 38:40Speaker 2: you do have those people around you, I mean, as
- 38:42Speaker 2: you said, You shouldn't have to have that person. You
- 38:44Speaker 2: should be your own doing it for yourself. But if
- 38:47Speaker 2: you can have a group or a person keeping you accountable,
- 38:52Speaker 2: it definitely makes a difference. And there's no doubt that
- 38:54Speaker 2: I am not going to message you, you know, over
- 38:56Speaker 2: the next seven days. So that's exciting. I almost want
- 38:59Speaker 2: to get back on a podcast earlier so I can
- 39:00Speaker 2: be like, this is what happened, this is what didn't happen.
- 39:04Speaker 2: Let's just assume because right now I'm really optimistic that
- 39:08Speaker 2: that sounds easy. You know, I think that's what it is.
- 39:09Speaker 2: It needs to be something because we are busy, there's
- 39:13Speaker 2: so much going on. Some people are dealing with overwhelmed.
- 39:15Speaker 2: Some people have got emotional things in their lives. They're
- 39:17Speaker 2: looking after a parent or a child, or they've got
- 39:20Speaker 2: work stress, or they've got this. It just needs to
- 39:22Speaker 2: be something easy, and you know, just going getting up
- 39:25Speaker 2: and going to the gym. I'm not setting any expectations.
- 39:27Speaker 2: I'm just going to go and do a bit of
- 39:28Speaker 2: a workout and then I'm going to let you know
- 39:30Speaker 2: what I did. I can do that.
- 39:32Speaker 1: Well, I've got a new plan. Melissa, who's Melissa, Who's
- 39:36Speaker 1: the boss, of me, as you well know, I'm mascarade
- 39:39Speaker 1: as the boss, but she's the boss. Now, remember we
- 39:42Speaker 1: delayed our podcast a week or two we did. Now
- 39:47Speaker 1: I think she told me to check in with you.
- 39:49Speaker 1: This is very terrible etiquette on a podcast, but fuck it, everybody,
- 39:53Speaker 1: let's pull back the curtain and see what happens. Really,
- 39:57Speaker 1: I think that she told me you and I have
- 39:59Speaker 1: another one on the eighth, which is two weeks from today.
- 40:03Speaker 2: Well, there you go, let's stick with it. It should
- 40:05Speaker 2: be in my calendar. I'm going to look as we
- 40:08Speaker 2: are here, that is the first and I've got you
- 40:12Speaker 2: in on the eighth at Now.
- 40:14Speaker 1: I don't, well, so what time we'll do that off here?
- 40:18Speaker 2: But no, I do, I do. You're on the seventh,
- 40:20Speaker 2: You're on the seventh, Wednesday the seventh, at twelve pm.
- 40:23Speaker 2: We're on the same time, Queensland, Melbourne. So that is
- 40:27Speaker 2: so I'm going to be back to tell everyone and
- 40:29Speaker 2: I'm going to do fourteen days listeners.
- 40:32Speaker 1: Yes, yes, we're going to do that. We're going to
- 40:34Speaker 1: well that's third end days from now, but whatever we're
- 40:36Speaker 1: going to we're going to do that. We're going to
- 40:37Speaker 1: check in and you know, you're right. I think the
- 40:42Speaker 1: it's pulling down the old buddy blind here. It's exciting
- 40:46Speaker 1: out there. But I mean the thing is, as I
- 40:50Speaker 1: said before, Yes, it is to be able to be
- 40:53Speaker 1: self motivated and do the work when no one's looking
- 40:55Speaker 1: or cheering. As is. It's very important at times, but
- 40:59Speaker 1: also because there are going to be times when no
- 41:01Speaker 1: one gives a fuck if you work out, or if
- 41:03Speaker 1: you're going great or not great. But I agree with you,
- 41:09Speaker 1: like if you can have a training partner, or a
- 41:13Speaker 1: walk buddy or a run buddy or whatever, or even
- 41:16Speaker 1: a personal trainer for some By the way, even though
- 41:19Speaker 1: I trained people for years and employed hundreds of trainers,
- 41:21Speaker 1: I'm not a massive advocate. I'm not pro oraanti. I
- 41:26Speaker 1: think for some people a trainer is the right fit
- 41:29Speaker 1: and the right thing I think, but not for everyone.
- 41:32Speaker 2: I'm one hundred trainer train I would love to have
- 41:35Speaker 2: a trainer. Tried to get my old trainer back. I've
- 41:37Speaker 2: talked about her in the early podcast. She's no longer
- 41:42Speaker 2: doing that. I've tried to convince her, but I stopped
- 41:44Speaker 2: with her. I think we might have discussed this even
- 41:47Speaker 2: on a podcast at a really silly time. It was
- 41:49Speaker 2: when I was dealing with caring for my dad, and
- 41:52Speaker 2: I felt like every training session I was just she
- 41:55Speaker 2: became for like a counselor, and then I started feeling guilty.
- 41:58Speaker 2: I was like, I'm just telling her all my problem.
- 42:00Speaker 2: This is not what I want to be doing. I
- 42:02Speaker 2: wasn't in a great space, probably when I needed to
- 42:03Speaker 2: train the most, and that's actually when I kind of
- 42:05Speaker 2: pulled back from a lot of the exercise when I
- 42:08Speaker 2: needed it more than ever. But the issue with me
- 42:11Speaker 2: and I've tried. I've got a gym and I spoke
- 42:13Speaker 2: to someone there. I can't commit to anything because you know,
- 42:17Speaker 2: in two weeks, I am around for two weeks, which
- 42:19Speaker 2: is fantastic, but then I'm away for a week. In June,
- 42:21Speaker 2: I'm in the UK and Europe for three weeks, and
- 42:23Speaker 2: you know, I travel, you know, by the way, I
- 42:26Speaker 2: had the best time in New York in February. I'm
- 42:28Speaker 2: trying to think I have we delayed. I haven't spoken
- 42:30Speaker 2: to you, sinces. In February. I was a good girl,
- 42:32Speaker 2: got off the plane, walked around Central Park in the morning.
- 42:35Speaker 2: I had my greens. I had no coffee. I'm a
- 42:37Speaker 2: massive coffee lover. I put all this stuff in place,
- 42:40Speaker 2: because I think we talked about it in the last podcast.
- 42:42Speaker 2: I had that what I now know possibly was a
- 42:45Speaker 2: panic attack in Jubai after doing five talks in two
- 42:48Speaker 2: days and coming from Saudi, and so the travels hitting
- 42:51Speaker 2: me a little bit harder. So I went to New
- 42:53Speaker 2: York and I actually gave myself a plan and I
- 42:56Speaker 2: stuck to that plan, and I felt phenomenal. And I
- 42:58Speaker 2: actually think I did one of the best talks I've
- 43:00Speaker 2: ever done. So this is one of the biggest integrative
- 43:03Speaker 2: medicine conferences ever IHS. So it's where I saw Dale Brettison,
- 43:07Speaker 2: who was the first person to show me in twenty
- 43:09Speaker 2: eighteen you could reverse Alzheimer's. I didn't even know. So
- 43:12Speaker 2: this is the best of the best, and I delivered.
- 43:16Speaker 2: I'm actually without sounding conceded, because you know, when you
- 43:18Speaker 2: do a good job speaking. I had the room, I
- 43:21Speaker 2: felt it. I was in flow by the way I
- 43:24Speaker 2: took elphenene. If we want to talk about some supplements,
- 43:27Speaker 2: and I took twenty milligrams of creatine' sorry grams, twenty
- 43:32Speaker 2: grams of cretine. I've never taken that much preteen in
- 43:35Speaker 2: my life. Just before speaking to you because I was
- 43:37Speaker 2: feeling a bit flat and I've been listening to those podcasts.
- 43:41Speaker 2: But yeah, when we talk about these things, you know,
- 43:44Speaker 2: the sleep, the exercise, taking care of ourselves. I went
- 43:48Speaker 2: to New York, massive flight, super nervous, and I did
- 43:52Speaker 2: such a good job and I felt fantastic. But I
- 43:56Speaker 2: did all the right things. You know. The night before
- 43:58Speaker 2: there was a speaker's dinner. I didn't drink alcohol because
- 44:01Speaker 2: I know it affects my sleep, even though there was
- 44:03Speaker 2: more than you know, I could want. Yeah, it went
- 44:06Speaker 2: really really well.
- 44:07Speaker 1: Yeah good, but myself. Do you know what I love?
- 44:12Speaker 1: I love that you are very down to earth. You
- 44:15Speaker 1: do not have a big ego, and I know that
- 44:16Speaker 1: would have been hard for you to say, but I'm
- 44:18Speaker 1: proud of you because like, I'm terrible at that. I
- 44:21Speaker 1: hate saying I'm good at it, even before when I
- 44:24Speaker 1: said for my age, I'm in not bad shape, but
- 44:26Speaker 1: I've always got to go. Oh, but by the way,
- 44:28Speaker 1: I don't have great genetics, and by the way, I'm mediocre,
- 44:31Speaker 1: and by the way, I've got to put in all
- 44:32Speaker 1: these disclaimers because I don't know. Maybe i'm but I
- 44:37Speaker 1: feel like sometimes when you do this shit in Australia,
- 44:41Speaker 1: you can get pulled apart really quickly if people even
- 44:44Speaker 1: get a fucking hint that you're up yourself, right. Yeah,
- 44:48Speaker 1: So it's and it's a pity. It's a pity because
- 44:53Speaker 1: you know, like sometimes like when you do something like
- 44:56Speaker 1: that where you know you did a good job, and
- 45:00Speaker 1: be times where you go that wasn't my best work.
- 45:02Speaker 1: But also you'll say that I've done gigs that were
- 45:05Speaker 1: two out of ten, and I've done gigs that were
- 45:08Speaker 1: for me a nine, a nine and a half, and
- 45:12Speaker 1: you come away but you don't want to say that
- 45:14Speaker 1: twenty one because so it's, yeah, that's a whole conversation itself,
- 45:19Speaker 1: isn't it.
- 45:19Speaker 2: I did a webinar a couple of weeks ago early
- 45:21Speaker 2: morning for the US, and it I mean, it wasn't bad,
- 45:25Speaker 2: but I knew it wasn't good. Like I actually thought
- 45:28Speaker 2: about saying to the people, can I just record this
- 45:30Speaker 2: again and send you a recording like it wasn't bad?
- 45:33Speaker 2: And sometimes you've just got to be okay with just okay.
- 45:37Speaker 2: But I didn't finish it going I'm a champion. I
- 45:40Speaker 2: finished it going okay. You got through, but you just
- 45:43Speaker 2: it felt hard and if it felt hard for me,
- 45:46Speaker 2: imagine what it is for the listener. So, as I said,
- 45:49Speaker 2: when I was in New York, though I was in
- 45:50Speaker 2: the moment you talk about flow state, like the energy
- 45:54Speaker 2: was amazing. It was just people were with me. It
- 45:57Speaker 2: was it was great. It was so good. That's what
- 45:59Speaker 2: That's why we do it, right, you just when you're
- 46:01Speaker 2: in those moments.
- 46:03Speaker 1: I mean, it sounds very self centered and egotistical, but
- 46:08Speaker 1: and you I don't do it for that reason, but
- 46:12Speaker 1: there are times when you are. You know, You've spoken
- 46:16Speaker 1: at my conference, the You Project Conference, and we have
- 46:18Speaker 1: about nearly seven hundred people in that room at Deacon
- 46:22Speaker 1: and we've done a bunch of those, and a couple
- 46:25Speaker 1: of times where I've done just me and no one else.
- 46:29Speaker 1: I've done a half day in that room, and one
- 46:34Speaker 1: in particular where I don't even know what was happening.
- 46:37Speaker 1: It was like I was fucking channeling someone much smarter
- 46:39Speaker 1: than me. Rights And at the end of it, at
- 46:44Speaker 1: the end of it, like everyone had gone, and there
- 46:47Speaker 1: was a whole lot of like people stayed, people wouldn't go,
- 46:50Speaker 1: and everyone wanted a hug or a photo or a
- 46:53Speaker 1: question answered or just a fucking because some magic shit happened.
- 46:58Speaker 1: It's like it happened despite me, not because of me.
- 47:02Speaker 1: And I know this sound cheezy, but it's like I
- 47:05Speaker 1: was a conduit to the experience, like I wasn't the
- 47:09Speaker 1: creator of it. It just kind of And and Melissa
- 47:12Speaker 1: came up after everyone had gone, and she doesn't swear generally,
- 47:17Speaker 1: and she goes to me, what the fuck was that?
- 47:20Speaker 1: I go, I don't know, I don't know. She goes,
- 47:25Speaker 1: that was crazy, She goes, what was happening? Like I
- 47:29Speaker 1: looked around the room. At one stage we were just
- 47:32Speaker 1: having this moment, me and the audience. It was like
- 47:37Speaker 1: six hundred people. If you closed your eyes, you'd think
- 47:41Speaker 1: there was no one in the room, like complete connection.
- 47:47Speaker 1: And I looked around and I can't remember what I
- 47:51Speaker 1: was talking about, but I got a little bit emotional
- 47:53Speaker 1: talking about something. And I don't know how many, but
- 47:56Speaker 1: it looked like everyone in the room was crying. It
- 47:58Speaker 1: probably wasn't but half And there was just this magic
- 48:04Speaker 1: and it wasn't manufactured and it wasn't scripted, And yeah,
- 48:08Speaker 1: so well done, you well done? You did you did?
- 48:12Speaker 1: You get great feedback?
- 48:14Speaker 2: Phenomenal. I got invited to probably what is the biggest
- 48:18Speaker 2: event in just They said, can you do the exact
- 48:21Speaker 2: same talk, which, by the way, I've never done the
- 48:23Speaker 2: exact same talk. Then I know you're corporate, so you
- 48:25Speaker 2: tend to have a gig. I get up and I
- 48:27Speaker 2: just always you know, new things a similar topic. But
- 48:31Speaker 2: I was told, can you just do that exact talk
- 48:34Speaker 2: at what's called a forum A five M is the
- 48:37Speaker 2: austrail a form, but that it's actually an anti aging
- 48:41Speaker 2: obviously they've moved on from anti aging. But I think
- 48:43Speaker 2: it has seven and a half thousand people. It's in
- 48:45Speaker 2: December in Vegas, but it brings in all the people
- 48:47Speaker 2: in the healthy aging space. So but yeah, you know,
- 48:50Speaker 2: it doesn't always happen. You know, I didn't even call
- 48:52Speaker 2: it the flow state when it happened. It's when I've
- 48:54Speaker 2: got back. I've been talking to people about that and
- 48:56Speaker 2: it's made me realize and I think you are right.
- 48:58Speaker 2: There's a moment where we channel something and it's even
- 49:00Speaker 2: bigger than us. You know. It's that it's that calling.
- 49:04Speaker 2: I'm here to share a message, and because I was
- 49:07Speaker 2: feeling good, I was calmer than I expected. I wasn't
- 49:10Speaker 2: in my head, you know, when I'm in my head.
- 49:12Speaker 2: Like I just spoke at APP a few weeks ago,
- 49:14Speaker 2: which is a big pharmacy conference. Had seven a half
- 49:18Speaker 2: thousand people. Not that many people at my thing, but
- 49:21Speaker 2: it did go really well. I got grade feet. I
- 49:22Speaker 2: don't know if you've seen. I was on the news.
- 49:24Speaker 2: I got like four media gigs out of it. They
- 49:26Speaker 2: absolutely loved it. But I was very in my head.
- 49:31Speaker 2: I was very in my head, you know. So obviously
- 49:34Speaker 2: people liked it, but I wasn't in the flow state.
- 49:37Speaker 2: I wasn't there just going I am sharing this with
- 49:39Speaker 2: you and connecting. I was, Yeah, I was a bit
- 49:42Speaker 2: bit too nervous. Sometimes your nerves ruin it for you
- 49:45Speaker 2: when it's so sad, because when I can let go
- 49:47Speaker 2: of that and be in the moment, it's actually like beautiful.
- 49:51Speaker 2: You're connecting. But sometimes you're in your head and yeah,
- 49:55Speaker 2: it's interesting just to observe all of that though, and
- 49:59Speaker 2: it comes back too, probably when I'm feeling at my best,
- 50:02Speaker 2: you know, the sleep and the exercise and the whole everything,
- 50:05Speaker 2: and even more reason for me to take such good
- 50:07Speaker 2: care of myself so that when I am trying to
- 50:10Speaker 2: do what I love doing sharing this information, I can
- 50:12Speaker 2: do it in a more enjoyable way, because when you
- 50:15Speaker 2: are tired and you are a bit stressed, then it's like,
- 50:18Speaker 2: oh my god, what did I just say?
- 50:20Speaker 1: Then?
- 50:20Speaker 2: And no one even cares if your stuff up? Anyway,
- 50:22Speaker 2: even in New York, it wasn't perfect. I was just
- 50:24Speaker 2: I didn't even I just felt good. I made jokes,
- 50:28Speaker 2: you know, even my my Australian humor, which sometimes does
- 50:31Speaker 2: not believe me. I've had some real like bombed out
- 50:36Speaker 2: terrible responses to my sarcastic you know way. But you
- 50:41Speaker 2: know I was making some jokes and had some humor
- 50:43Speaker 2: and everyone was laughing like yeah, anyway. I know.
- 50:48Speaker 1: Funny how sometimes our mind gets in the way when
- 50:52Speaker 1: you think like your mind is the gift, well yeah,
- 50:55Speaker 1: and sometimes your mind is the problem. Yeah, you know,
- 50:59Speaker 1: because you can over it. It's like people are often
- 51:03Speaker 1: surprised that I pretty much don't prepare for things, as
- 51:06Speaker 1: in sit there right notes that you know, I go,
- 51:10Speaker 1: I don't There's nothing I need to learn between now
- 51:13Speaker 1: and tomorrow. There's like I'm not going to get new informat,
- 51:18Speaker 1: like yeah, so I would literally go into a like
- 51:23Speaker 1: next week. In fact, I'm coming to Coinsland next week.
- 51:25Speaker 1: But I did we're about Goldie, I think a bit
- 51:30Speaker 1: far for me, but you know, but I've got Yeah,
- 51:34Speaker 1: so a half day I've got to do Tuesday in
- 51:36Speaker 1: Melbourne and a half day in on the Gold Coast
- 51:40Speaker 1: on Tuesday. But I literally take quite often I'll take
- 51:43Speaker 1: one a four sheet of paper and I'll have twenty
- 51:46Speaker 1: dot points on it, and sometimes it doesn't even come
- 51:49Speaker 1: out of my pocket. But in terms of actual written
- 51:52Speaker 1: notes slides video zero zero because for me, when it's
- 51:58Speaker 1: scripted or choreographed or overly planned, it gets me out
- 52:05Speaker 1: of flow and it stops me from building real rapport
- 52:08Speaker 1: and reading the room and understanding in real time what's required.
- 52:12Speaker 1: When I think I'm sixty one, I literally started talking
- 52:16Speaker 1: about this stuff when I was eighteen. What the fuck
- 52:19Speaker 1: am I going to learn by tomorrow? Like? Why should I?
- 52:22Speaker 1: If I'm sitting with you, like right now, we just talk.
- 52:26Speaker 1: It's not awkward, there's no painful gaps. It's not like,
- 52:30Speaker 1: oh shit, what will we talk about? And then if
- 52:34Speaker 1: somebody wants to meet with me and we have an
- 52:36Speaker 1: hour and a coffee and a chat, there's no prep.
- 52:38Speaker 1: There's like, let's just sit down and then for me,
- 52:41Speaker 1: I just expand that to an audience and it's like, well,
- 52:44Speaker 1: I'm talking about the things I always talk about, except
- 52:47Speaker 1: instead of you know, N equals one, it's N equals
- 52:51Speaker 1: one hundred or one thousand. It doesn't matter.
- 52:54Speaker 2: Is that why you don't come along to the gigs
- 52:56Speaker 2: that I sometimes have recommended you for, like with app
- 53:00Speaker 2: them in the Australian College of Nutrition Environmental Medicine. When
- 53:02Speaker 2: I want you to come and talk to the doctors
- 53:03Speaker 2: about exercise and you politely decline these requests.
- 53:08Speaker 1: That's not true, Ask me, I would gladly come.
- 53:12Speaker 2: I've given them your name and they let me know
- 53:15Speaker 2: that you've declined.
- 53:17Speaker 1: That's not true. I would never decline. You know where
- 53:19Speaker 1: I spoke at the Royal Australian College of Surgeons and
- 53:23Speaker 1: your conference. That was fucking interesting. Yeah, no, but one
- 53:28Speaker 1: hundred per we'll talk about that.
- 53:29Speaker 2: Off air, all right, All right, there's all these things
- 53:31Speaker 2: that we're just we're just sharing everything. We are pulling
- 53:33Speaker 2: back today having a chat. But it is nice. We
- 53:37Speaker 2: never prepare and I think that the authenticity that comes
- 53:40Speaker 2: across to is what helps connect. By the way, if
- 53:43Speaker 2: anyone who is interested in methylation and all the stuff
- 53:46Speaker 2: that Gary Breker talks about in this and that Craig
- 53:48Speaker 2: and I are going to talk about it one day.
- 53:50Speaker 2: We were going to talk about on the last last podcast,
- 53:52Speaker 2: But one day we might talk about the topics we plan.
- 53:55Speaker 2: Otherwise we just come in and but today I needed
- 53:58Speaker 2: help everyone. So I appreciate the list for being on
- 54:01Speaker 2: this journey with me and getting me back into the gym.
- 54:03Speaker 2: And I hope that someone else is writing down what
- 54:06Speaker 2: do you need to do for the next seven days
- 54:08Speaker 2: and who can you reach out to to text? Is
- 54:10Speaker 2: it your mum, auntie, cousin, neighbor, do the same thing,
- 54:13Speaker 2: you know, check in in a couple of weeks and
- 54:16Speaker 2: hopefully you're on this journey with me. You know, wouldn't
- 54:19Speaker 2: that be amazing? Or coming along to what you're starting
- 54:21Speaker 2: next week? Did you say next week you've got a thing? Yep.
- 54:26Speaker 2: I think that group mentality makes a big difference. It's
- 54:29Speaker 2: a really good starting point.
- 54:31Speaker 1: We recently did a seven day kind of ended up
- 54:35Speaker 1: being a fucking You know, when you have a little idea,
- 54:38Speaker 1: I'll just do this thing, and you think this is
- 54:40Speaker 1: going to be a one, one or two out of
- 54:42Speaker 1: ten effort, it ends up being a nine so.
- 54:44Speaker 2: Yeah, I do those things all the time.
- 54:46Speaker 1: Oh god, I opened Pandora's box. But so anyway, I
- 54:52Speaker 1: said on a podcast, I went, you know what, I'm
- 54:55Speaker 1: going to do a because you know, we have, obviously,
- 54:59Speaker 1: as do you, programs and products and services that people buy.
- 55:03Speaker 1: And I said, I'm just going to do seven days
- 55:05Speaker 1: of coaching for anyone in the world who wants to
- 55:08Speaker 1: be coached by me, free. And at the end, there's
- 55:12Speaker 1: no sales, there's nothing, there's no product, there's no program,
- 55:15Speaker 1: there's no upsell on sale, there's nothing. And in fact,
- 55:19Speaker 1: I'm not even going to talk about any shit other
- 55:21Speaker 1: than on the day. So I every day for seven
- 55:24Speaker 1: days I recorded a video which people could access. You
- 55:31Speaker 1: can go and have a look now if you want. Everyone,
- 55:33Speaker 1: and they're still all up there on the U project
- 55:35Speaker 1: Facebook page. But every day I would give them about
- 55:38Speaker 1: twenty options of things that they could do, tasks either
- 55:43Speaker 1: cognitive or physical, or some kind of other challenge that
- 55:49Speaker 1: they could do to get a little bit uncomfortable and
- 55:51Speaker 1: do something hard, hard ish for seven days. And there
- 55:55Speaker 1: was a bunch of options, and I thought, I we'll
- 55:58Speaker 1: have you know, thirty or forty people to jump on.
- 56:00Speaker 1: We ended up with like seven hundred people doing this thing,
- 56:03Speaker 1: and yeah, it would just turned into a goliath, but
- 56:08Speaker 1: it was amazing. It was amazing, And it's.
- 56:11Speaker 2: That collective energy too. I think it's the collective energy
- 56:14Speaker 2: everyone coming together supporting each other.
- 56:16Speaker 1: And people had to like the kind of their commitment
- 56:22Speaker 1: was do the work and then once you've done the work,
- 56:25Speaker 1: come back to the page and go in, leave a
- 56:27Speaker 1: comment and just say complete it. If you want to
- 56:30Speaker 1: write more than that, cool, but when we see your
- 56:34Speaker 1: name and your little face and completed, we know that
- 56:36Speaker 1: you've done the work and this is a good way
- 56:38Speaker 1: for you to come and check in, have some accountability,
- 56:41Speaker 1: have a bit of process for the seven days. And
- 56:45Speaker 1: like I thought, oh, it's not a particularly inspirational or
- 56:48Speaker 1: new idea, but yeah, the amount of people that just
- 56:52Speaker 1: loved that little bit of somebody else giving a fuck
- 56:54Speaker 1: and somebody else caring and somebody else providing some kind
- 56:58Speaker 1: of framework and accountability. Yeah, so maybe you and I'll
- 57:02Speaker 1: do something one day and yes, like's seven days something
- 57:06Speaker 1: that you and I run for your people, my people.
- 57:09Speaker 2: Yeah, would love to, would love to because this stuff,
- 57:13Speaker 2: it's seven days, doesn't sound like a lot, but it
- 57:15Speaker 2: can be life changing because then you stick with that
- 57:18Speaker 2: habit and you know, sometimes it's two steps forward, one
- 57:21Speaker 2: step back, But then you do it again, and then
- 57:23Speaker 2: you know, in the first time it might be, well,
- 57:25Speaker 2: I'm just you know, stopping alcohol. The next time it
- 57:27Speaker 2: might be I'm going to be exercising. The next one
- 57:29Speaker 2: is you know, I'm going to go to bed an
- 57:30Speaker 2: hour earlier. Every time you're adding in a small habit
- 57:33Speaker 2: that actually makes a phenomenal difference to your overall health
- 57:37Speaker 2: and well being. So my second question to you before,
- 57:40Speaker 2: I didn't want to ask to it once, which is
- 57:41Speaker 2: typically what I would do, and then it just you know,
- 57:43Speaker 2: throws everything. So I've held on to it, trying to
- 57:47Speaker 2: keep the listener engaged because I know my brain can
- 57:50Speaker 2: go everywhere practically, so what I've been trying to do
- 57:54Speaker 2: and it hasn't worked, but maybe you know it will now.
- 57:56Speaker 2: I mean, now I'm going to get up and go
- 57:57Speaker 2: to the gym. But I do try to give myself
- 58:00Speaker 2: a schedule because you know, I'm busy, so you know,
- 58:01Speaker 2: whether it's seeing patients, I'm creating content, I've got meetings, podcasts,
- 58:05Speaker 2: et cetera. Do you is that how you do things,
- 58:09Speaker 2: you know, do you are you just are you just
- 58:13Speaker 2: going with the moment because you know how important is
- 58:15Speaker 2: to go out and move and you've got a break
- 58:16Speaker 2: or are you actually planning and you're like, at between
- 58:20Speaker 2: two and three, I've got a break, so I'm going
- 58:21Speaker 2: to go for a walk to the beach whatever. Do
- 58:23Speaker 2: you have a schedule and then you have your non negotiables,
- 58:27Speaker 2: like how do you do it?
- 58:30Speaker 1: Yeah, so that's great question. So I'm there's a degree
- 58:33Speaker 1: of structure and accountability and non negotiability and also some
- 58:37Speaker 1: flexibility depending on what happens on the day so before
- 58:42Speaker 1: So we started recording at two o'clock. It's now three
- 58:44Speaker 1: oh three, and at one o'clock I decided I was
- 58:49Speaker 1: going to walk and get a coffee, which I normally
- 58:50Speaker 1: do about that time. And I looked at my steps
- 58:53Speaker 1: and my steps were like three thousand for the day.
- 58:55Speaker 1: My rock bottom is ten thousand. Usually I do thirteen
- 59:00Speaker 1: to fifteen thousand. I had to ring, in fact, you know,
- 59:04Speaker 1: I had to ring. I'm going to give her a
- 59:07Speaker 1: shout out. Jackie Cooper, five time world champion aerial ski jumper,
- 59:11Speaker 1: five time Olympian. So we'd been missing each other and
- 59:14Speaker 1: I thought, Okay, so I need to get a coffee,
- 59:17Speaker 1: I need to talk to Jackie, and I need to
- 59:19Speaker 1: get in some steps. So I just walked I don't know,
- 59:22Speaker 1: maybe five thousand steps in about fifty minutes, give or take.
- 59:26Speaker 1: I had half an hour on the phone with Jackie,
- 59:29Speaker 1: I got my coffee, and then I was back here
- 59:31Speaker 1: to meet with you. So I'm very good at multitasking.
- 59:35Speaker 1: And also another thing I've started doing is like, even
- 59:39Speaker 1: if I'm microwaving my dinner and it's in there for
- 59:42Speaker 1: five minutes, I will walk out the side gate and
- 59:44Speaker 1: I will walk for five minutes. I'll go and do
- 59:48Speaker 1: eight hundred meters just because I'd rather do that than
- 59:50Speaker 1: sit on a chair in the kitchen. So yeah, I'm
- 59:54Speaker 1: very efficient. But another thing that I do every morning
- 59:59Speaker 1: is I essentially say to myself when I'm my little
- 1:00:04Speaker 1: morning richell, I get up. I walk usually now for
- 1:00:07Speaker 1: thirty minutes or so before I get to the cafe.
- 1:00:09Speaker 1: So the cafe is only five minutes away, but I'll
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: detour and I'll take a thirty minute version. Then I
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: sit down. I don't look at anything, I don't scroll,
- 1:00:18Speaker 1: I don't look at social media. I sit down, I
- 1:00:21Speaker 1: have a blank page on my phone in notes, and
- 1:00:24Speaker 1: I go, all right, what do I need to do today?
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: What's the shit that I need to do today? Before
- 1:00:29Speaker 1: I get derailed with looking at other shit? What's the
- 1:00:36Speaker 1: best use of my time and energy and focus today
- 1:00:39Speaker 1: based on what I need to get done? And then
- 1:00:42Speaker 1: I kind of set my to do list for the day. Then,
- 1:00:46Speaker 1: like I know, for example, there's like I had Bobby
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: podcast at eleven thirty, then I had you at two,
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: and I'm meeting some people at the gym at five,
- 1:00:55Speaker 1: so all those things that are set, but the rest
- 1:00:57Speaker 1: of it I just kind of work around it.
- 1:01:01Speaker 2: Yeah, And I like, hey, you said's a derailed, because
- 1:01:04Speaker 2: often you can feel like days get derailed. And I
- 1:01:08Speaker 2: had one of those days yesterday, and you know, some
- 1:01:10Speaker 2: things came through that I thought were done in My
- 1:01:12Speaker 2: assistant was like did it to do now? I was like,
- 1:01:14Speaker 2: wasn't that done ages ago? And then all of a sudden,
- 1:01:16Speaker 2: You're like, oh, my goodness, well thisst needs to be
- 1:01:17Speaker 2: addressed right now because blah blah blah. You know those things.
- 1:01:20Speaker 2: I feel like those things happen a lot, But the
- 1:01:22Speaker 2: reality is, it's life, whether it is a cyclone Alfred,
- 1:01:26Speaker 2: or it's a child thing, or it's a work thing.
- 1:01:28Speaker 2: I think I'm just you know, getting in and with
- 1:01:32Speaker 2: the exercise and stuff like that too. I just have
- 1:01:33Speaker 2: to know that every day there is potentially going to
- 1:01:37Speaker 2: be something unexpected and that is life and be okay
- 1:01:42Speaker 2: with it. And again it comes back to how good
- 1:01:44Speaker 2: you're feeling. Days that I'm great and I'm well rested
- 1:01:46Speaker 2: and I've done some exercise, I'm in a good mood.
- 1:01:48Speaker 2: I can when I'm on, I can deal with so much,
- 1:01:53Speaker 2: but then when I'm not on, it can seem like
- 1:01:55Speaker 2: such a task that just throws me. And in all honest,
- 1:02:00Speaker 2: if I hadn't have canceled the last podcast, I would
- 1:02:02Speaker 2: have messaged you today saying I don't know if I can.
- 1:02:05Speaker 2: I was feeling so flat, But as I said, I
- 1:02:07Speaker 2: was like, you know what, I'm going to experiment. Thank
- 1:02:09Speaker 2: god ive been okay on the podcast. This is real life,
- 1:02:11Speaker 2: responding to more cretine than you've ever had in your life.
- 1:02:14Speaker 2: But I was like, I'm feeling so flat, and you
- 1:02:18Speaker 2: and I just usually get on and talk about whatever
- 1:02:20Speaker 2: what happens if my brain doesn't work, like I just
- 1:02:22Speaker 2: don't know what if I've got anything to give. Yeah,
- 1:02:25Speaker 2: So you know, I had the quarantine, I've had some
- 1:02:28Speaker 2: LTH nine and then I was like, god, am I
- 1:02:30Speaker 2: getting run down? I have some lipis, vitamin C, some
- 1:02:33Speaker 2: B vitamins. So I just gave myself all these vitamins.
- 1:02:35Speaker 2: Whether they've done anything or not. I have to say
- 1:02:37Speaker 2: I do feel better, but I'd probably put most of
- 1:02:40Speaker 2: that onto actually just connecting with you, Like, I'm actually
- 1:02:43Speaker 2: really grateful for this podcast because I'm in such a
- 1:02:45Speaker 2: better mood and I'm feeling good. I'm feeling like, you know,
- 1:02:49Speaker 2: I can get up in the morning and go to
- 1:02:50Speaker 2: the gym and I've connected with you and we've had
- 1:02:52Speaker 2: a chat, and this is what this is who I
- 1:02:54Speaker 2: want to be and what I want to do. So
- 1:02:56Speaker 2: thank you.
- 1:02:57Speaker 1: Well, we appreciate you, and you definitely don't need to
- 1:02:59Speaker 1: thank me, but I'll take it. Hey, how do we're
- 1:03:02Speaker 1: going to see you in thirteen days in your new
- 1:03:04Speaker 1: and improved state? Yes? How do people? How do people
- 1:03:08Speaker 1: find you and connect with you?
- 1:03:10Speaker 2: Yes, you can find me. I have a website, Doctor
- 1:03:13Speaker 2: Denise Furnace. There is a Facebook group, the Your Genes
- 1:03:17Speaker 2: and Nutrition Community. There hasn't been a lot of action
- 1:03:19Speaker 2: in there, but you know, do pop in and answer
- 1:03:21Speaker 2: questions out every now and again, and of course check
- 1:03:24Speaker 2: in at the You Project because I'm going to be
- 1:03:26Speaker 2: back in a couple of weeks and hopefully on fire,
- 1:03:30Speaker 2: telling you how great everything's been. Or we can list
- 1:03:33Speaker 2: off my excuses and Craig can sort that shit out,
- 1:03:37Speaker 2: sort that shit out.
- 1:03:39Speaker 1: Oh that's hilarious. All right, appreciate you, have a good night,
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: enjoy the gym tomorrow will bye. Everyone,
