Transcript
- 0:13Hi, good afternoon. Welcome Miller and Condon on the
- 0:16day before. The day before, we welcome you
- 0:19to the Iowa Sports Radio Network, Trent Condon and Ken
- 0:22Miller as we'll talk sports with you for the next couple of
- 0:25hours. Thank you for starting your
- 0:27afternoon with us. Here's what's coming up on our
- 0:31program, Pete Futech from collegefootballnews.com.
- 0:34We'll talk to Pete at the bottom of the hour.
- 0:36Been a month or so since we've caught up with Pete.
- 0:38Pick his brain and what he sees coming up here as we get set for
- 0:42the quarterfinals. Pete Few tech at 12:30.
- 0:46Mitch Holtis is going to join us via tape.
- 0:48He sent a 3 minute piece. We'll hear from Mitch, a
- 0:52recorded piece coming up here at 12:45.
- 0:54Haven't listened to it, guessing it has everything to do with the
- 0:57game on Christmas, Christmas night, but Mitch Holtis will
- 1:02join us. 12:45 Then we'll hit the Chicago catch up with a
- 1:04Cappy. More on the Bears and their
- 1:07remarkable win over the Packers. And what lies ahead for the
- 1:09Bears. They will play on Monday night.
- 1:12And then more on the Chiefs with Nick Athan.
- 1:15But why don't they pick Nick's brain?
- 1:17What's going on with the move I. I guess I don't understand the
- 1:21uproar, but to be perfectly honest with the audience, I'm
- 1:25not the most well versed on Kansas City, MO or Kansas City,
- 1:30KS. I don't like the area.
- 1:31For whatever reason, it never struck A chord with me or what.
- 1:35I mean, I love the Twin Cities, I love Chicago.
- 1:38Maybe it's 'cause I never got to the parts that would move my
- 1:42needle. I mean, I've been to.
- 1:43The casino. No, yeah, I did go once.
- 1:47Actually, I did go once, 90, maybe 1990, but been to
- 1:51obviously Kaufman and I would never go near that dump that's
- 1:54next door to it because the Chiefs played there.
- 1:57I think your fan of showed. Just a chat and I know I get it.
- 2:00Look here, Chiefs fans love it. But So what am I missing?
- 2:04Isn't it kind of like it's 20 miles away?
- 2:07You're right. What's?
- 2:08The big deal if he if he if, let's say we had the principal
- 2:12Park was Major League team moves to Altoona.
- 2:15Right. What's the I mean the uproar?
- 2:17West Waukee or West Waukee? And that happened to be in
- 2:20Nebraska. Right.
- 2:21See. I I guess I don't understand it,
- 2:25but there's a lot of people that are pissed off the free money.
- 2:28I get that part of it that the owner seemingly are going to,
- 2:32you know, pull the wool over the taxpayers eye again.
- 2:34Although there's something called star bonds, which I'm
- 2:37trying to become familiar with. As I anticipated speaking on
- 2:40this today, I don't know what I'm I'm, I'm no more clued in
- 2:43than I was when I started to dig into it.
- 2:46But anyways, they're moving and the Chiefs and the ownership,
- 2:53etcetera, not going to have to dig very deep into their own
- 2:55pockets. This is not the Seattle
- 2:58SuperSonics becoming the Oklahoma City Thunder.
- 3:00Or the Winnipeg just becoming the Phoenix Coyote's a story I'm
- 3:02much more familiar with. This is moving across the river,
- 3:06right? You're in the same Metroplex,
- 3:10You're in the same area if you're used to it, and I know
- 3:14you got tons of memories of that place.
- 3:16But people from Kansas City, KS have been going to Kansas City,
- 3:19MO to watch the Chiefs forever, right, yes, absolutely And and
- 3:23and maybe if there's somebody from Kansas City that happens to
- 3:25be driving through or whatever that can can help us out.
- 3:28I don't understand the uproar. You're going to get a brand new
- 3:31stadium. Arrowhead sure, the memories and
- 3:34you've got some absolutely incredible ones there for for
- 3:38that. I'll, I'll, I'll give you that,
- 3:40but I mean, Kansas City, KS is part of the same municipality
- 3:45right as Kansas City, MO. It's all one big happy cities
- 3:50like West Des Moines and Des Moines.
- 3:53The uproar? Well, we just had a color that
- 3:55did mention there's a lot of eggs between these two states.
- 3:58Over what? Well, this dates back to the
- 4:00Civil War. One side and I don't know that
- 4:03part. So one side fought for the
- 4:05winners, the others for the losers.
- 4:07OK. All right.
- 4:08So yeah, this is. And that still lingers to this
- 4:12day. Well.
- 4:12I think there's, there's pieces of that.
- 4:15There's still, I mean, segregation was a big thing.
- 4:18Yeah, slavery was a big thing. I get that part.
- 4:20Yep, I get that. Part and I'm gonna guess that
- 4:22yeah, though it's centuries ago, that that is still something.
- 4:25That's why people. Don't.
- 4:26Well, Omaha, Council Bluffs, probably a little different
- 4:32factor, but if you had all of a sudden Creighton Blue Jay
- 4:36basketball being played in Council Bluffs, think people
- 4:38just take it sitting down. Yeah.
- 4:43I mean, you're, you're, you're they're still your team.
- 4:47They're not going to change the name, right?
- 4:49They're not going to be the Kansas City KS Chiefs.
- 4:53I don't, I don't think. But, but again, and I want to be
- 4:55perfectly upfront with this, this is over the tips of my
- 4:58skis. And so I'm kind of relying on
- 5:01you, the audience, which is why I wanted to get Nick in here to
- 5:04get his opinion on this. Now, the Royals might may follow
- 5:07suit. I think what's lacking when I
- 5:10look this purely as an outsider's perspective, who's
- 5:13literally been to to Kauffman and where do we stay?
- 5:19Was it called the Adam's Mark across the street?
- 5:22It's been a couple of different properties.
- 5:23It was the Drury that Drury was. There, but there was across the
- 5:26street from the Drury, there was another property and it's not
- 5:30there. It's not the coolest place and
- 5:32there's no bars. I get that part, which is
- 5:34probably one of the reason they do want to move.
- 5:36Yeah, there's going to be a huge development.
- 5:38Here's the thing, you're going to get multiple Super Bowls,
- 5:42you're going to get multiple Final Fours in the cradle of
- 5:47college basketball. All these major events that may
- 5:51have passed you by, sporting events, they're going to come
- 5:54your way now. But again, it's, it's upset a
- 5:58lot of people. So I'm I'm asking for help when
- 6:00it comes to this. We got a couple of colors that
- 6:03maybe can help. Us all right, let's go to Jesse
- 6:04first of all, then we'll get Thunder Joe in here.
- 6:06Hi, Jesse, are are you upset first of all?
- 6:10Hey guys, I am upset but not upset as people from Kansas or
- 6:14Missouri. I live in Waukee, I live in
- 6:15Iowa, I work in Iowa. Lifelong Chiefs fan.
- 6:18I know there's always been Missouri Kansas beef if you
- 6:20follow the Kansas City Twitter. Or.
- 6:24Their sports talk radio channels, there's always been a
- 6:26beef and a rivalry. But to me it's more of the
- 6:29Arrowhead is a classic. It's like the club leaving
- 6:31Wrigley or Packers leaving Lambeau.
- 6:34That's what hurts me, is there's nothing special.
- 6:37About a new Dome, there's nothing special.
- 6:40About another opening Roof stadium.
- 6:42There's something special about Wrigley Arrowhead.
- 6:45Yeah. Ambo.
- 6:46Yeah, that's just my take. No, listen, I I think that's
- 6:48absolutely fair. Jesse.
- 6:50Merry Christmas, Happy holidays. Appreciate you chiming in, and
- 6:54thank you for listening. Yeah, that's fair.
- 6:55I mean that that's fair. Arrowhead.
- 6:57The memories that are there. By the way, I watched a great
- 6:59Arrowhead memory yesterday. The 1997 divisional round of us
- 7:04of the Path to Super Bowl 32, Elway came out on Netflix
- 7:07yesterday. I cried.
- 7:09I did. I cried, but you know, I cried a
- 7:11lot. Because he looks like a horse.
- 7:12He looks like a Bronco. No, because he was such a hell
- 7:14of a quarterback and he finally, finally, finally got us across
- 7:19us across the finish line. It's pretty good, I think.
- 7:22I think you probably have to be a Denver fan to really
- 7:24appreciate it, but I thought it was pretty well done.
- 7:27Just, you know, the pressure that.
- 7:29He had, you know, and this kind of goes hand in hand with the
- 7:32potential of the bears that we've talked about, right?
- 7:34Them going to Indiana, you know, Hammond, IN, is what it's
- 7:36talking. It's 45 miles away.
- 7:38See, that's a little further. It's a little bit further, but
- 7:41it's also it's not in. Illinois, right?
- 7:44Yeah. The pride and joy of Illinois
- 7:47doesn't quite go the same way. The pride and joy of Indiana
- 7:51similar. Yeah, no, I.
- 7:52Get it, but that's also bigger city feels much different for me
- 7:58as an outsider. Kansas City, MO Kansas City, KS
- 8:02Very similar and stayed on both sides it's.
- 8:03All one thing. Right.
- 8:04Yeah, and the metro area of Kansas City, much smaller than.
- 8:07Chicago too. Yeah, right.
- 8:09I mean, when you're talking about those western suburbs,
- 8:11those people are talking about a 2 hour drive, you know, to get
- 8:14to Hammond, IN. All right, let's get back to the
- 8:16phones. A lot of people want to chime in
- 8:17on this topic. I do want to get to the Monday
- 8:19Night Football last night. God, it was fun to watch Phillip
- 8:22Rivers play, wasn't it? It was just, I mean, there's
- 8:24just this guy didn't get his due when he left.
- 8:27And I think the appreciation that's coming his way.
- 8:30I was always a fan. Even though he was a Charger, I
- 8:32was always a fan of his game. Hi, Joe, How are you Thunder
- 8:34Joe? Hey, pretty good.
- 8:36Good afternoon. I kind of want to rib on these
- 8:38Chiefs fans that are complaining about it.
- 8:40First off, it's not like they're moving to Fort Hayes.
- 8:42I mean, think about it, the 49ers play like 6 blocks from
- 8:46San Jose. That's.
- 8:47Absolutely true. Yes, absolutely.
- 8:49I couldn't believe it, Joe. So we Super Bowl 50, I was
- 8:53there. We stayed at San Francisco,
- 8:55downtown San Francisco. I couldn't believe how far it
- 8:59was to get to Levi's Stadium. It's like 40 minutes easily.
- 9:03Yeah, I mean, the next thing you take one wrong turn, you're down
- 9:06in LA. Yeah, pretty close, Joe.
- 9:09Merry Christmas, man. Thank you.
- 9:11You too, brother. Yep.
- 9:12I appreciate you listening. Yeah, Levi Stadium is way, way
- 9:15South of San Francisco. It's Santa.
- 9:17Clara. It's Santa Clara.
- 9:18And traffic there differently. Kansas City traffic.
- 9:21Too. Sure, sure.
- 9:23Absolutely. Was Chris and then AJ.
- 9:26Hi, Chris, How are you? Yeah.
- 9:29Hi guys. I wanted to chime in on the
- 9:31Adam's mark. I think that has been defunct
- 9:34for some now. I, I think so, the one across
- 9:40from the stadium to the north and I'm all for the new stadium
- 9:44now. Arrowhead's done a good job and
- 9:46they've had the renovations since 1971 since it started up
- 9:51and they have a great winning record.
- 9:53But I welcome the new stadium, but I don't welcome the new
- 9:56ticket prices because they're going to be astronomical to see
- 9:59a Chiefs game. Yeah, that's all I got.
- 10:02Yeah. Thanks, man.
- 10:03Enjoy your holiday. Appreciate that.
- 10:05Yeah, that's fair. Yeah, there's just.
- 10:07Nothing around the area. You know, there's that one
- 10:09Amico. Yeah, right.
- 10:11Yeah, the tailgating is all otherworldly, right.
- 10:15It is first class. I get that part.
- 10:16It is a huge wide open area and it is.
- 10:19It's fun. Yep, absolutely huge.
- 10:21It's fun tailgating. I mean, I've been there for
- 10:22Royals Twins games and it's a great time for baseball, which
- 10:25is not exactly known for their tailgate environments.
- 10:28It's incredible for. That it it really is.
- 10:30I tailgated on opening day of Royals season back-to-back
- 10:33years. It was I first I've ever
- 10:35experienced it. I'll never forget John Walters.
- 10:38Yeah. Chuck Reed, OK.
- 10:40Myself and, you know, a couple other KCCI people I think.
- 10:44But yeah, had a blast. That's a crew there.
- 10:45Saw Joey Bell before he was Albert Bell.
- 10:48OK, go deep on opening day one year.
- 10:51Hello, AJ, how are you? I'm good.
- 10:55Hey guys, I talked to my brother.
- 10:58He's a long time DeSoto, Kansas native now from Iowa, but he's
- 11:03in DeSoto and so he explained it all to me.
- 11:07So with these star bonds, you need no government approval.
- 11:10The governor can just send it right, right on to the Chief.
- 11:14And they've fought in Kansas City or Johnson County.
- 11:19Missouri had fought and there's so many levels of government in
- 11:23Missouri that they had to go through and they had 50 years to
- 11:27develop everything around it. They never did a Dang thing.
- 11:30So that's going to go out by the Kansas Speedway and the Legends
- 11:34and the soccer stadiums and all the infrastructure is there and
- 11:38you have several interstates that can go right by it.
- 11:42So you're talking about not just going to a Chiefs game, but
- 11:45concerts that are indoors, whatever you want to do.
- 11:49So, and I'm really excited as his brother because his house is
- 11:53going to be about 2025 minutes from new stadium.
- 11:56So I'm super stoked for the new stadium.
- 11:59And then Trent, this Bear fan, my dog's name Bear, my
- 12:04daughter's Peyton TAYTON, my whole life I'm loving this man.
- 12:09We got to just carry it because you know what, let's go.
- 12:12And I'm all for putting it in Hammond IN speed him if they
- 12:16want, because the stupid Chicago corruption and government, they
- 12:21still want the Bears to pay $500 million for half a Soldier Field
- 12:25that the state and the county and the city were supposed to
- 12:28pay. So if they go to Hammond, it's
- 12:30right off of I-80. So bear down.
- 12:32Let's beat the diners on Sunday night, buddy.
- 12:35Let's go. Let's get it done.
- 12:36Love that Jay. Merry Christmas, brother.
- 12:38That's good. That's a passion.
- 12:40Absolutely. AJ is up there from God's
- 12:42country, too. He's a Clear Lake guy, is he?
- 12:43Oh yeah, he knows what's going on.
- 12:45What would he be listening on, I wonder up.
- 12:47There probably the I Heart app sometimes, you know, we bounce
- 12:50out there. But yes, AJ, good listener and
- 12:53up there I'll be waving to AJ as I go by tomorrow, Christmas Eve
- 12:57up to Osage. That's where you're going
- 12:58tomorrow night. Going to Osage.
- 13:00Well tomorrow we'll go to church with the whole no out there
- 13:04church tonight at our church tomorrow, double dipping with
- 13:08grandma and the whole crew and then we'll get on the road
- 13:11probably 93010 o'clock. Get home, get the kids in bed
- 13:14and then it will be Christmas. Nice finishing touches.
- 13:18Wake up and all day long and then we always come up to your
- 13:20neck of the woods. Then Christmas night.
- 13:22Do you? We don't you.
- 13:23See that that one display? Ginger, Was it Gingerbread Lane?
- 13:28There is that, but there's one right by where I live.
- 13:31We've been there before, it's OK.
- 13:33But you you tune your radio. I think it's just the one house.
- 13:37It's right in the corner of 36th and Mylan.
- 13:40Maybe it's. It's almost the Interstate.
- 13:42Yeah. This guy does an unbelievable
- 13:44job. Oh, absolutely.
- 13:44It's just incredible. And the tours that go through
- 13:47there each and every night. But be careful because, you
- 13:49know, they're closing I-35 northbound tonight.
- 13:52They are north. I mean, perfect timing, right?
- 13:57Yeah, I think between like 8:00 at night and I, I don't know,
- 14:02but it's yeah, I-35 is going to be for a couple of days.
- 14:05Those city planners, our buddy Travis, he's wondering
- 14:08Christmas. Seriously.
- 14:09Construction workers gas overtime.
- 14:12Yeah, really. This is what somebody's posts on
- 14:16Twitter, true or not, Not sure, but I don't want to get the
- 14:18money on football, but just this.
- 14:20Missouri's now lost Saint Louis Brown, St.
- 14:22Louis Cardinals, Saint Louis Rams, Saint Louis Hawks, Kansas
- 14:25City Kings, Kansas City Athletics, Kansas City Scouts
- 14:29and soon to be the Kansas City Chiefs.
- 14:31Kansas is lost. That's it.
- 14:35Nothing but Missouri maybe, maybe it is politics there.
- 14:39I don't know. But I was kind of struck by all
- 14:42the the push back. Anyways, Nick Athan will come
- 14:45with more on that football last night.
- 14:47Did you see much of the Philip Rivers?
- 14:48Well, look it to be fair, it was the Brock Purdy Show Co starring
- 14:52Philip Rivers. Good God, Purdy's unbelievable.
- 14:55He truly is. But Philip Rivers to me was the
- 14:57story last night and the box with the 10 kids and his wife up
- 15:01there. It's remarkable that this guy,
- 15:04obviously the physical, he can't throw the ball down the field.
- 15:07You know, Troy pointed that out a couple of times and it's
- 15:09accurate. But just knowing, I mean, he's
- 15:11been literally there for what, 10 days now?
- 15:14And knowing the reads and getting the ball to where it's
- 15:16supposed to be. I mean, he never had the
- 15:18strongest arms by any means. I just respected the hell out of
- 15:21his game, always did. And was it was a joy to watch
- 15:25him play last night. How about this finishes these
- 15:29last two games. Not going to get them to the
- 15:30playoffs likely. They what they need the Texans
- 15:32to lose out. They play a Week 18, but they
- 15:35need the Texans to lose this week.
- 15:37And they get the Chargers, so it's not without the realm of
- 15:39possibility. And the Colts?
- 15:42They had the Jaguars come to town.
- 15:44Still, well, those are two big games.
- 15:45But two important games and two that could go that, but that
- 15:48side, Yep, I'll just say it doesn't happen.
- 15:50OK, What we've seen from him does this.
- 15:53Oh, I know where you're going. And the answer is yes, This
- 15:55augments yes. He's hoping yes.
- 15:58I think he went from a probably not first ballot.
- 16:02He'll get there sometime. Yes, within the first five
- 16:04years. Because the lack of Super Bowl,
- 16:06you know, it's resonates with some, probably some voters.
- 16:10I would hope that this would be taken into consideration.
- 16:14I really would. It's I, I love the fact that
- 16:18he's getting his dude, that he's 44, that he's not embarrassing
- 16:21himself. Maybe as important as anything.
- 16:23And that was the concern. Yes, absolutely was, especially
- 16:26when you walk into Seattle for game one.
- 16:28Yes, I mean good luck. Right, and they had an
- 16:30opportunity to win that game. And yes, they moved the ball
- 16:33last night against the Sanford. Yes, banged up defensively.
- 16:36What other note? I just had my notes here.
- 16:38Christian McCaffrey. And good God, it's all and
- 16:42Kittle pretty back, you know Kittle.
- 16:46We were. It was always on the background,
- 16:48this 49er team, because you love Seattle, everybody loves the
- 16:51Rams, the Packers before the injuries.
- 16:54We're talking all these different match generations.
- 16:56The Eagles obviously have done it to the last three years,
- 16:58getting to the Super Bowl and winning one last year.
- 17:01And the 49ers are just in the background.
- 17:03And as they get healthier now, they're gonna have to win a
- 17:05different way. This is not going to be the
- 17:0749ers team a couple years ago where now they can go out there
- 17:09and win 17. 13 Brock Bertie's gonna have to lead them.
- 17:11They're gonna have to win shootouts, but with those
- 17:14weapons, the way that offensive line's coming together.
- 17:17When you say weapons, I don't think he has the greatest wide
- 17:19receivers, but kittles elite still at 32 and obviously you
- 17:24hit the tail on the head. 23 is is otherworldly.
- 17:28Did you hear I got such a kick? I I mean, if you listen to this
- 17:32program, you know my love for Troy and Joe Buck.
- 17:34I mean, these guys are unbelievable when Buck brought
- 17:38up the, the fact that before they brought in Philip Rivers,
- 17:42they got the committee on leadership together to ask the
- 17:47that there's a, the committee of leadership's made-up with, you
- 17:50know, all the position groups, defensive backs, defensive
- 17:52lineman, offensive, like they got it.
- 17:54They got a committee on leadership.
- 17:56And Aikman starts laughing and says, Can you imagine Jimmy
- 18:00Johnson putting together a committee on leadership?
- 18:03No, I mean that's how much the game has changed.
- 18:06Right. You know, like it really goes
- 18:08hand in hand with, well, we had Dame Mazzutani on last week and
- 18:11we're talking about JJ McCarthy. And it's something that has just
- 18:14stuck with me here this last week or so.
- 18:17And it goes with Caleb Williams and young quarterbacks.
- 18:20And the questions about Caleb Williams, cuz he paints his
- 18:22nails. I mean, one of the dumbest lead
- 18:24up to a these for me. Yes, there's a generation
- 18:29younger, right? The Barstool Bros, those kind of
- 18:31people. And it's not for me, but yeah,
- 18:33that's different. Well, we're talking about now
- 18:35for me, two generations, you know, this next generation,
- 18:38whatever this generation is, but these people in their teens into
- 18:42their early 20s. JJ McCarthy's a weird dude to
- 18:45me. Caleb Williams is a different
- 18:47kind of quarterback. But I think it's also the
- 18:49reality that I have to start to realize is they are a lot
- 18:53different. Yeah, younger people, OK,
- 18:55they're kind of one group. But when you get those two
- 18:57generations removed, and this is kind of the first time in my
- 18:59career that I'm going through this for the first time doing
- 19:01this and understanding they don't have to be wired like John
- 19:03Hillway. They don't have to be Troy
- 19:05Aikman. Today's environment, team
- 19:07camaraderie, all those different things and leadership count.
- 19:10And talking about things. Did you and your buddies get
- 19:14together and talk about your feelings right?
- 19:18No. It's a different generation.
- 19:20No, it is. And it's something that you have
- 19:22to evolve when all these quarterbacks, they're not all
- 19:25gonna fit into the box that I think we're used to.
- 19:27And it's something that just stuck with me when Dane brought
- 19:30that up and we were talking about because it's not just
- 19:32McCarthy. I don't think he's very good.
- 19:34And I want to be right on that because he also plays for the
- 19:36Vikings. But secondly, he's just wired
- 19:39different. But that's OK.
- 19:40And I think it was just a reality for me is maybe I have
- 19:43to think of, and it's not just a quarterback, but just in general
- 19:46this new era of athlete that is coming into our lives.
- 19:48And we talked about at the college level with NIL and how
- 19:50different that is. But also personality wise, these
- 19:53guys are a whole lot different. There's no question you may hit
- 19:56the look. I think you can in in a way kind
- 20:00of bring that really close to home here at Cakes.
- 20:02And oh, when I was asked when I thought about Lucas Strange
- 20:05joining our team, I said you have your mind out of your mind.
- 20:09This guy never saw the Run, the Senecas play or the Catch the
- 20:15Holloway play. He never seen any of this stuff,
- 20:17you know, come back in 10 years and then maybe he's it's the
- 20:20best hire we've made in a long time.
- 20:23We got younger for the better. And look at the audience he's
- 20:26bringing in. It's fantastic.
- 20:29That, but but to my credit, I'm going to give myself a little
- 20:33credit here. I went home and thought about it
- 20:35and realized no, no, no, no, this is a good move.
- 20:37And came back the next day and said, yeah, I think this is a
- 20:40really good idea because everything needs to evolve.
- 20:43Right, absolutely. The way that we do things is a
- 20:46lot different. The old people that still
- 20:48college athletes getting paid back in my day.
- 20:52Our day was a long time ago. I hate to remind you it's.
- 20:55The old adage right? Evolve or die, right?
- 20:58All right, we're going to get to Pete Futek coming up here.
- 21:01College football news collegefootballnews.com for for
- 21:04Pete, look forward to Do you have one game you like more than
- 21:07the others? Maybe from a?
- 21:08Non non playoff game. Yeah, no, a playoff game.
- 21:11Well, give me, give me one of each from a betting
- 21:13perspectives. We're not going to make any
- 21:15picks from a betting perspective.
- 21:18One that I jumped on right away was, and this was, I think, my
- 21:22first bold bet. Yeah.
- 21:23Was New Mexico when they were getting a field goal?
- 21:25Now they're getting 2 1/2 against Minnesota.
- 21:27That's the day after Christmas. That'll be on Friday afternoon,
- 21:30OK against New Mexico. I like New Mexico.
- 21:32I like New Mexico, yeah. Jason X stayed there.
- 21:34I think that was a big component of it.
- 21:36Minnesota, it really comes down to Darius Taylor.
- 21:38I mean, they're just such a completely different team in
- 21:40there. But Minnesota was so awful on
- 21:42the road. This is a bowl game, obviously a
- 21:44neutral site but and I think New Mexico, they haven't made a bowl
- 21:47game in like 8 years. So they'll be wanting to win.
- 21:49They're going to Phoenix, you know, Albuquerque to Phoenix.
- 21:51That's this is where Iowa State was going, right, Right.
- 21:53Probably took Iowa State's. Place they did absolutely, I was
- 21:56going to be Minnesota, Iowa State.
- 21:57I heard from some people down in Phoenix that were very excited
- 22:00to get the Cyclone fans and the last obviously that didn't
- 22:02happen. So that's one, at least from a
- 22:04betting perspective. And I just want to see the on
- 22:06Saturday, it's just a helmet game.
- 22:09Which one? Clemson, Penn State?
- 22:11Oh, yeah. I mean, how many people had them
- 22:13at minimum in the playoff in their Final four, maybe playing
- 22:17for a national? Clemson to win it all.
- 22:18And now these two teams at 6:00 and 6:00 will face off in Yankee
- 22:21Stadium. Who's going to play?
- 22:23Hey. You know what?
- 22:24Do me a favor. Yeah.
- 22:25Do you have your notebook here? Yeah.
- 22:27I did. I might have picked Clemson and
- 22:28Penn State to play for the national championship.
- 22:30I think he did. So I might have got the match up
- 22:32right. I'm going to ask for 1/2 a point
- 22:34you have. I want a half a.
- 22:35Point. I'll give you a quarter of a
- 22:36point. See.
- 22:37We round down. See.
- 22:38If you can find that, awesome. Clemson, Penn State, though,
- 22:42that's what that I I. Think I like that.
- 22:44Intriguing and do you realize on Saturday how many bowl games we
- 22:47have? We have 8 bowl games on
- 22:49Saturday, 8 bowl games on. Saturday, two NFL games that are
- 22:52are one of them's meaningless. Now let me get the bowl games in
- 22:58front of me. Are the NFL games in front of me
- 23:00for Saturday? Houston and the Chargers, it's a
- 23:02huge game. Baltimore.
- 23:04That's a huge game. Oh gosh darn it.
- 23:07The the NFL. They just keep they.
- 23:10Just, I mean, I get it, Good stuff.
- 23:13All right, Millery Condon, glad you're with us here.
- 23:16Appreciate all the input on the Kansas City to Missouri back and
- 23:20forth. Clemson over Penn State.
- 23:23That's what I had in the natty. Yep, I had Georgia beating Notre
- 23:27Dame. Well, you you have a chance to
- 23:29get your your winner. Right, could get that.
- 23:32So I actually predicted what pool did I predict?
- 23:35Where are they playing? What?
- 23:36What's Penn State? And they're playing in the what?
- 23:38The pinstripe. The Pinstripe.
- 23:39Yeah, the Yankee Stadium. It's.
- 23:41Kind of the same, not. Too shabby, de.
- 23:42Facto national champion. Right.
- 23:45Well, and we'd be remiss if we didn't mention the retirement
- 23:48John Hicks. Oh God, thank you.
- 23:49Yes. What a career.
- 23:50What a career. I mean, I think that offenses
- 23:55were starting to catch up a little bit with him, but you
- 23:58know, when you've got some of the who's who of defensive minds
- 24:03in the offseason making their way to Ames, IA to spend time
- 24:06with Iowa State's DC. The Patriots were coming to town
- 24:09under Bill Belichick to learn what you're doing and the elites
- 24:13from Venables when he was at Clemson and the defense
- 24:15coordinator who had elite defenses.
- 24:18But what do you do against these spreads?
- 24:20What are you doing that is working so well?
- 24:22It changed defenses in college football and the way that they
- 24:26play. They're right offensive coaches
- 24:28now. They're going to go back to the
- 24:29drive and they've started to figure some things out.
- 24:31But to have that, to have that happen, I mean, that's going to
- 24:34be top of the resume, right? Or or top of this statue for
- 24:37John Haycock. Yeah, is absolutely.
- 24:39How many people learned what they did against the spread and
- 24:43he was the architect. And no, there's no question.
- 24:45Well done. Heck of a career.
- 24:47Miller and Condon, Pete Few Tech next.
- 24:49Glad you're with us on the day before.
- 24:50The day before it's the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 24:55I'm Milary Condon, Welcome back. I was sports radio network with
- 24:59you until 2O clock wherever you're listening in state of I
- 25:01grateful that you are. Happy holidays.
- 25:03Merry Christmas to all of you. Have a safe one.
- 25:07We will hear from Mitch Holt is the voice of the Kansas City
- 25:09chief Mitch on tape. He filed that earlier this
- 25:12morning. We'll hear that in about 15
- 25:13minutes. Right now.
- 25:14Pete futechcollegefootballnews.com.
- 25:17He's got his preview of all of the bowl games up there today,
- 25:20of course, being Louisville, Toledo, at least that is the
- 25:22first one. But Pete joins us.
- 25:24Hello Pete Futech, Tech. Wonderful time of year.
- 25:27How are you? I'm doing just fine.
- 25:29How you guys doing doing? OK.
- 25:31We saw some changes after the playoff 2024 had come and gone.
- 25:36Do you anticipate we're going to see anything significant prior
- 25:39to this exercise next December? There'll be something, there'll
- 25:45be some sort of tweaks, there'll be some sort of, it's the
- 25:49problem is the playoff committee wants to maintain control of
- 25:52things. At the moment the SEC and the
- 25:55Big 10 are happy because they got, you know, they pretty much
- 25:59are going to be as represented as they want to be.
- 26:02Certainly the ACC and Big 12 are going to keep complaining if
- 26:05they want more in this. But I do think overall they've
- 26:10they've got to do something. Justin, in terms of just the the
- 26:15the overall transparency, because the problem is OK, yeah,
- 26:18Miami won, Alabama won doesn't mean that the they got it right
- 26:23necessarily. I mean Notre Dame did get hosed.
- 26:27You don't really need a you need to have some group of five team.
- 26:31And if you get that, you have to have some way to that every team
- 26:34can believe that they have a shot, but you don't need both of
- 26:36them in. So I think the tweak might just
- 26:39be with next going forward. Just say you know what the whole
- 26:42all the Power 4 Pro champions are in and then we'll go from
- 26:47there. Do you because of potential
- 26:50litigation, there still has to be a spot, at least one spot
- 26:53though, for the group of five. Can you cap that though?
- 26:55Can you cap just one gets in or are you setting yourself up for
- 26:59more litigation if you go that route?
- 27:01I, I, you know, as long as there's a mechanism, there's
- 27:04ways to do this. And I'm not sure why.
- 27:06I mean, I, I know these people, I work with them, I know how it
- 27:10works. I know why certain things were
- 27:12the way they work were really when they just got started with
- 27:16this thing over 10 years ago, they just wanted to get up and
- 27:19going and then they were going to adapt and adjust.
- 27:22There's a couple really simple tweaks where I think that the
- 27:26weekend of the Army Navy game just have an extra game.
- 27:30Just have either you can either have it.
- 27:32You know, the two top group of Frank group of five teams play
- 27:36each other and the winner of that, if they're both outside of
- 27:40the top 12 to begin with, the winner of that gets into the
- 27:42tournament there they they, they just got your one representation
- 27:46or you, you have four teams like this year.
- 27:48If during that the Army Navy week, you had, let's say, you
- 27:52know, BYU versus James Madison and Tulane versus Notre Dame and
- 27:56just have that kind of be like, you know, like the NBA
- 27:59tournament 1st 4. Then OK, you know, the, the
- 28:02group of five teams get their representation, get 2 teams to
- 28:04get a shot. You know, you get a shot to at
- 28:07least get into the tournament. And then you kind of get ridden,
- 28:11you know those two legs, you know, LAG teams get their chance
- 28:14to. And if you're a Texas or if
- 28:16there's someone else and you can't even make that, you don't
- 28:18deserve to be in the playoffs. Let's let's Fast forward to the
- 28:23the quarterfinal rounds. Is there a team that had a buy
- 28:26this past week that you think might be in trouble?
- 28:31All of them. I mean, there's, I think, I
- 28:34mean, look, I mean, the, the, the positive about this is, you
- 28:37know, they tweaked last year's version where, you know, you had
- 28:41the, the easy layup games in the second round, relatively
- 28:44speaking, if you don't want to call it Arizona State that.
- 28:47And now we've got these monster quarter final games.
- 28:50I don't think Ole Miss beats Georgia.
- 28:53That's that's the one thing I'm pretty much sold on that.
- 28:57There's that Georgia comes up and Ole Miss had its game and
- 29:00has Lane Kiff and exorcism moment against Tulane.
- 29:04And now, OK, we're going to get rid of that.
- 29:06You know, the rebels were good, but flawed.
- 29:09I'm not buying into the SEC teams at all in general.
- 29:12So the least of the three that are left are probably and I
- 29:16don't buy into Alabama. I I still don't think they're
- 29:19that good. That was more of a case that I
- 29:23don't know what happened to Oklahoma, but you had the
- 29:26misfire on the past. You had the weird punt that
- 29:29didn't work and then the pick six.
- 29:31And they just completely, you know, messed themselves.
- 29:35I mean, they just, it was the weirdest type of thing at that
- 29:38team with that defense could look that bad.
- 29:41Well, yeah. And Alabama took over that
- 29:44Alabama's a little puffy chested and all that.
- 29:46I don't think they're beating it.
- 29:47Yeah. And I don't think we're going to
- 29:48get an Oregon situation of last year in the Rose Bowl.
- 29:52Certainly, you know, Texas Tech is going to be interesting.
- 29:55I mean, I that is a dangerous team to watch.
- 30:00Certainly, you know, Miami going forward is going to be
- 30:02interesting to watch. So I would not be shocked at any
- 30:05outcome in the other three. But I do think Georgia wins
- 30:07against old old Miss. Pete, I know you dabble and take
- 30:10a look at the point spreads. If Indiana and Alabama was just
- 30:15Big 10 champion, they got a Big 10 emblem on their helmet.
- 30:17It's not the Indiana Hoosiers and the Alabama team that we saw
- 30:20and they just have an SEC emblem.
- 30:22We don't have the name brands with it.
- 30:24Would the Big 10 brand be favored by two touchdowns as
- 30:26opposed to the one touchdown they are right now?
- 30:28Because. It's a it's a good question that
- 30:31the problem with it is it doesn't work like that only
- 30:33because again, I if it were big random SEC team playing Oklahoma
- 30:38last week. I still think you know, Oklahoma
- 30:41wins and but oh, you know, Alabama was Alabama.
- 30:44There is a little something that goes to that and even over the
- 30:47years, whether it was saving and now De Boer, look, you know,
- 30:51they that program seems to rise up and play.
- 30:55I mean, the talents there. They're they just aren't playing
- 30:58like it necessarily. And they finally did for I mean,
- 31:01for the last, you know, 25 minutes of that game against the
- 31:06OU, but they hadn't beaten anything.
- 31:08They didn't played well for like a, you know, a couple months.
- 31:11I mean, since the Tennessee game, they were kind of black.
- 31:14So I get what you're saying. I'm still not I, I, I'm still
- 31:19having a hard time buying Indiana, mainly not because it's
- 31:22Indiana, but they don't have the talent level of, you know, the
- 31:27NFL talent guys of most of the rest of the team still in the
- 31:31tournament. I just they're, they're very
- 31:33good and they're they're obviously superior coach.
- 31:38I do think they get out of this. I think they get by Alabama.
- 31:42There's going to be a little nervy thing to begin with.
- 31:44Alabama's playing, you know that a little bit of a chip on its
- 31:48shoulder now because it's not supposed to win this thing.
- 31:51And that that goes to the other part of this thing too.
- 31:53It's remember, if they're not going to do this, and I have no
- 31:57idea why you can't do this in the NCAA tournament.
- 32:00I have no idea why you don't do this in the playoffs and other
- 32:03sports, especially the NFL. Indiana got host.
- 32:06I mean look they they get Alabama who technically is the 9
- 32:10seed and technically supposedly the better team than #10 Miami.
- 32:16OH State gets Miami. So theoretically at least even
- 32:20though I think Miami's better than Alabama, Alabama, Ohio
- 32:23State won by losing the Big 10 championship because it got the
- 32:26lower seeded game then Indiana did.
- 32:29And God forbid if Miami beats Ohio State, then Indiana really
- 32:33gets a kind of screw, kind of screwed in all this because it
- 32:37gets the higher seeds the whole way and it gets absolutely no
- 32:39break or no reward for being the number one overall seed.
- 32:44Pete, my last thing for you, preview all of the bowl games
- 32:47regardless playoff or not. As mentioned, you've got your
- 32:49games up today. Is there one non playoff game
- 32:52that you like more than the other?
- 32:53Which one non playoff game are you looking forward to watching?
- 32:56Pete? Few Tech.
- 32:57None of them. These are so awful.
- 33:00I'm not joking there. This bowl season's been so bad.
- 33:05I mean, it's just look, the celebration bowl, you know, to
- 33:09begin with, which isn't really a technical NBA, you know, the FBS
- 33:13sanction bowl was which was amazing.
- 33:15That was a great way to kick this thing off.
- 33:18And since then, everything has been awful.
- 33:21Either it's been, you know, teams no one cares about playing
- 33:23low scoring, boring games that no one's going to wait till the
- 33:26very end. And the one or games that you
- 33:28know, might have come down to something interesting or they've
- 33:31been ugly blowouts because the power four programs have just
- 33:35crushed the group of five programs so far.
- 33:38We'll see what happens today with Louisville.
- 33:40I mean, look, I mean, you keep watching because eventually
- 33:43you're going to get something great that, you know, so many
- 33:46games these do end up coming together and, you know, doing
- 33:49all right. I kind of want to see Georgia
- 33:51Tech versus BYU, of course, because BYU is going to play,
- 33:55you know, full bore. Georgia Tech seems just like it
- 33:58has most of its guys. But the problem is these last
- 34:01second opt out and the transfers and the these teams that are
- 34:05missing coaches. And then you get something like
- 34:07yesterday where, you know, Washington State didn't have
- 34:10anybody. They had their quarterback and
- 34:13that was it. No coaches, no players.
- 34:16And then Utah State who had everybody didn't even get off
- 34:18the bus and got just boat race from the start.
- 34:21So these are just some weird games and hopefully these become
- 34:25good. But to answer your question, I
- 34:28kind of like the game that no one's going to watch because
- 34:30it's on Christmas Eve. I'm with you.
- 34:33Cal versus Hawaii is going to be like 9592.
- 34:36I mean, because Dick Rolovich coaching Cal, Hawaii and Hawaii,
- 34:40I think that is going to be a wild back and forth shootout.
- 34:44At least I'm hoping. For that.
- 34:45We'll get you out on this one, Pete Michigan.
- 34:48Is Bip Pogey really going to take over this?
- 34:50No, really. He can't.
- 34:53He can't. I mean, look, he's just a
- 34:55different sort of dude. It's just crazy enough that it
- 34:59might work, but no, you can't. But the problem is there's
- 35:04everything else is every other option out there right now.
- 35:06It's kind of boring. And I'm really sort of Tommy
- 35:09Reese. Is that really going to be your
- 35:11guy? I am stunned that they didn't go
- 35:13Jet Fish that see, he seems like the next guy up.
- 35:17He seemed like he was ready for, you know, that job.
- 35:20I thought he was, you know, early enough of the process
- 35:22where they could just take him right away after the LA Bowl may
- 35:25be on their way. But Michigan overall, that whole
- 35:27athletic department, such a mess that I think they're just trying
- 35:30to get through the day and then they'll figure out the head
- 35:32coaches as they go. Enjoy the game tomorrow night,
- 35:35Pete. Appreciate it.
- 35:37Thanks for coming on, Pete Futech.
- 35:38Best in 26. Thanks pal.
- 35:40You too guys have a good one. Good to talk to you, Pete
- 35:42Futech. I'm with him.
- 35:43I can't wait for that game tomorrow.
- 35:44It'd be fun. Empty nesters.
- 35:47Just Cindy and I and Jet and a little college football.
- 35:51We'll take a time out. We'll hear from Mitch Holtis,
- 35:53the voice of the Chiefs. He sent along a what did you
- 35:56say? Almost 4 minutes of tape.
- 35:58That's next. Miller and Condon, Iowa Sports
- 36:00Radio Network Papa John's throughout the state of Iowa
- 36:02sponsors Mitch Holtis his weekly appearance with Trent tonight.
- 36:05Short week this week. But he did send us this tape.
- 36:08Merry Christmas to you guys and all of our great listeners in
- 36:11Iowa and to Tom and Matt Donaldson of Papa John's of
- 36:15Iowa. I so appreciate them for making
- 36:18these reports possible and for what they do for the entire
- 36:21state of Iowa. They are so generous and
- 36:23involved throughout the region. OK, two things to deal with now.
- 36:26One is the Christmas night game hosting Denver and an even
- 36:29hotter issue here now that the Chiefs have been eliminated from
- 36:32the playoffs. And that was the announcement
- 36:34made in Topeka, KS on Monday and how it could affect Des Moines
- 36:39and the southwest and western region of Iowa.
- 36:42All right, football, the Chiefs are in the Alamo.
- 36:44Yes, a six and nine record. The injuries are now boarding on
- 36:47the ridiculous. The Chiefs are dealing with the
- 36:49replacements for the replacements for the
- 36:51replacements. I'm not kidding.
- 36:53Let's take quarterback Patrick Mahomes out for the year.
- 36:56Knee surgery on December 15th and in the first quarter for the
- 36:59game against the Tennessee Titans, backup Gardner Minshew
- 37:02had a serious knee injury. That meant Chris Ola Dokan, who
- 37:05had barely played in the NFL, took over the duties and will do
- 37:08so again on Christmas night against the outstanding Denver
- 37:11defense. But it's really offensive tackle
- 37:14where the roof is caved in. The Chiefs are down 4 offensive
- 37:17tackles and are using Essa Pole who's played very little
- 37:20football comparatively at left tackle.
- 37:23And the Chiefs international pathway player from Nigeria Chew
- 37:26Godric at right tackle who's played hardly any football.
- 37:30And to have a backup for the backup to the backup, the Chiefs
- 37:33signed Matt. Well, let's go.
- 37:34A former Dallas Cowboy and Minnesota Viking practice squad
- 37:37guy off the street. Oh, well, here come the Broncos.
- 37:40Ken's wanted this for a decade. He's got it.
- 37:42Not only a really good Bronco team, but now playing a Chiefs
- 37:45team will have to Max out just to keep the game somewhat
- 37:48competitive. And the Broncos have a lot at
- 37:50stake after their loss Sunday to Jacksonville.
- 37:53They're now in a tight battle for the number one seed and not
- 37:56only that, but the Chargers aren't relenting.
- 37:58So a Week 18 matchup take the Broncos from a buy to a wild
- 38:02card position. Now the Monday announcement and
- 38:05this is the big news. Chief Chairman and CEO Clark
- 38:08Hunt announced in Topeka, KS that the Chiefs are going to
- 38:11build a brand new Dome stadium near the Kansas Speedway in
- 38:14Kansas City, KS and a new practice facility and village in
- 38:19Olathe, KS that will be the new team headquarters.
- 38:22The plans are very elaborate and put the Kansas City region in a
- 38:25position to challenge for a Final Four, a national
- 38:29championship football game, Super Bowl, Bowl games, major
- 38:32concerts and events. And the new plans will call for
- 38:35entertainment opportunities and amenities that will make the
- 38:38facility a 360 day destination for vacations and trips.
- 38:43That will be great for Des Moines and the state of Iowa,
- 38:46especially the West southwest parts of the state.
- 38:49Fellas, this is going to be really cool.
- 38:52And the effect could be far reaching in a 250 to 300 mile
- 38:56radius. I'll close as I began.
- 38:59Merry Christmas and happy holidays.
- 39:01And yes, your Christmas gatherings and family time
- 39:04should include the awesome menu from Papa John's of Iowa.
- 39:07Remember, Papa John's is red and green.
- 39:09I think they're the official pizza of Christmas.
- 39:12Anyway, check it out at papajohns.com.
- 39:15Reporting from Kansas City, I'm Mitch Holtis, voice of the
- 39:18Chiefs all. Right.
- 39:19Good stuff and appreciate Mitch doing that for us on a on a
- 39:22short week before we run out of time.
- 39:24I want to mention this Smiley Hawkeye fan must have known a
- 39:29ton of Hawkeye fans. There are more people that are
- 39:32responding to the news that he passed away.
- 39:35Gary Smiley is this is the last name Blore.
- 39:38Not sure on that. Just know him, Smiley.
- 39:40Everybody knows him is Smiley, right?
- 39:41So if you're a Hawkeye fan, you spend any time at Iowa City?
- 39:44Probably bumped into him. Oh.
- 39:45Absolutely. I saw him downtown, saw him at
- 39:47games. He was everywhere.
- 39:48Smiley, he made the rounds and all kinds of athletic events,
- 39:51right? All kinds of downtown
- 39:53establishments. Smiley was always around and.
- 39:56An institution, Yeah. Absolutely.
- 39:58And I think he'd moved away from Iowa City, I'd heard a while
- 40:01back and was living with his sister.
- 40:03But yeah, just one of those characters, right?
- 40:05There are plenty of those in Iowa City.
- 40:06You hang out at the PED Mall, you're gonna sing characters.
- 40:09And Smiley was another one of those people that you just
- 40:11always knew. Yeah, a lot of a lot of people
- 40:14that they're expressing in condolences on his passing.
- 40:17All right, our number two, we will head to Chicago.
- 40:19Go catch up with Cappy. First of all, they'll talk about
- 40:22the Bears. First of all, look forward to
- 40:24doing that. Do a little baseball with the
- 40:26cap man as well. Sunday Night Football, it's the
- 40:30Niners and the Bears. Oh, baby doesn't get much better
- 40:33than that one, does it? I jumped in last night before
- 40:36the kick off of the 49ers game. To what?
- 40:39To jump on the 49ers, you did Super Bowl?
- 40:41No, just to win the game to cover against the Bears.
- 40:45And I think I got the right side of it because it was 2 1/2 at
- 40:47the time. Now it's three.
- 40:50I had a feeling maybe something like what happened last night
- 40:52could happen like that number to 2 1/2.
- 40:54More than three. Hope I am dead wrong all.
- 40:58Right, Cappy kicks it off. More on the Chiefs move.
- 41:02Nick Athan will join us for a few minutes before we get out of
- 41:04here at 2:00. Miller and Condon, we've got an
- 41:06hour to go. We're glad you're with us on the
- 41:09Iowa Sports Radio Network.
