Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Good afternoon, everybody, and welcome to the program here on
- 0:03Speaker 1: Sports Radio AM thirteen Under the Zone.
- 0:04Speaker 2: My name is Craig Way. Thanks so much for joining us.
- 0:07Speaker 1: US, of course, includes the producer of the program, Cameron D.
- 0:10Speaker 2: Parker.
- 0:10Speaker 1: The D on the birth certificate stands for Dallas, as
- 0:13Speaker 1: in his favorite pro football team that has packed away
- 0:16Speaker 1: the gear for the season. Now we kind of sit
- 0:19Speaker 1: and waite, and does Cameron hold his breath to see
- 0:22Speaker 1: if Mike McCarthy's going to return as head coach, or
- 0:25Speaker 1: will Jerry Jones grant the Chicago Bears permission to talk
- 0:30Speaker 1: and visit and interview McCarthy about their head coaching vacancy,
- 0:34Speaker 1: and if that doesn't work out, will the Jaguars or
- 0:37Speaker 1: Saints make a play for him.
- 0:40Speaker 2: You're in a lot of suspense on this, aren't you going?
- 0:42Speaker 2: It's just killing me. I'm dying over here, Craig. Good afternoon, Yeah,
- 0:47Speaker 2: good afternoon. All right.
- 0:48Speaker 1: So we'll do just a quick for instance here. Let's
- 0:55Speaker 1: say that for whatever reason, Mike McCarthy leaves, say he's
- 1:00Speaker 1: done with him, or he grants the Bears permission to
- 1:03Speaker 1: visit with him, and the Bears are from the job,
- 1:05Speaker 1: but he takes the job or whatever that he's nun
- 1:09Speaker 1: Who do you want to be the next head coach
- 1:11Speaker 1: of the Dallas Cowboys?
- 1:12Speaker 3: Who I want? I mean, I would love like Mike Frable,
- 1:16Speaker 3: but I just I don't think. Let's say the Patriots
- 1:19Speaker 3: hire him, which seems to be the watch gold and
- 1:21Speaker 3: maybe Ben Johnson, but he seems like a Chicago guy
- 1:25Speaker 3: in that division. Outside of that, I don't I don't
- 1:28Speaker 3: know where you go. I mean, I like blind Brian Floores.
- 1:31Speaker 3: But the Jerry's track record with hires, it's all right.
- 1:34Speaker 3: Either it's some dude that's already won a Super Bowl.
- 1:37Speaker 3: So that scares me because on the backside of his career, Yeah,
- 1:42Speaker 3: because then that leads me to think, boy, John Gruden,
- 1:45Speaker 3: is that someone that Jerry would go after? Wow, because
- 1:48Speaker 3: he's He's never really hired an up and coming coordinator, right,
- 1:51Speaker 3: I mean Jason Garrett, I would not say is up
- 1:54Speaker 3: and coming. He was just a OC for the Cowboys
- 1:56Speaker 3: when Wade Philips let go right before that. Before at Phillips,
- 2:00Speaker 3: it was obviously what's his name that was with the
- 2:03Speaker 3: Jets before Belichick, Well, what's his name that was?
- 2:07Speaker 2: Well?
- 2:08Speaker 1: The other guys I think about them were coaches for
- 2:10Speaker 1: the Cowboys. Head coaches guys like Parcels Yeah, okay, all right,
- 2:14Speaker 1: or as Jerry used to call him, Bill Purcelles, sales.
- 2:18Speaker 1: You know, I think of guys like Chan Gaily and
- 2:21Speaker 1: you know, uh, there there were lots of men, right, Yeah,
- 2:25Speaker 1: there were a lot of those guys who were company men.
- 2:28Speaker 1: So but isn't there the reasonable expectation that whomever Jerry
- 2:34Speaker 1: hires is going to have to be a company man exactly?
- 2:36Speaker 3: And that's why I wonder, like, is this really an
- 2:38Speaker 3: attractive job for the head coaches? Like McCarthy was out
- 2:41Speaker 3: of football for a year. I think he was kind
- 2:43Speaker 3: of like begging to get back into coaching. Now I'm
- 2:46Speaker 3: kind of surprised that the Bears want to interview him,
- 2:49Speaker 3: and I wouldn't be surprised we see the Saints or Jaguars.
- 2:52Speaker 3: But you know, I think, I don't know, is there
- 2:53Speaker 3: a number of coaches teams are supposed to interview at least, right,
- 2:57Speaker 3: and so are they just fulfilling that quota by getting
- 3:00Speaker 3: guys like McCarthy. I mean, Mike Gundy interviewed for a
- 3:03Speaker 3: head coaching job at one point in the NFL. Mike
- 3:06Speaker 3: Mike Gundy. So I don't know if there's anything really
- 3:09Speaker 3: to put into this. So the Bears requesting the interview him,
- 3:12Speaker 3: but in terms of if McCarthy does go, whether it's
- 3:15Speaker 3: fired or he leaves on his own, because I can't
- 3:17Speaker 3: imagine the Cowboys would accept the Bear's permission or request
- 3:21Speaker 3: to interview. I mean, why would you let your head
- 3:23Speaker 3: coach interview for another job if you want to keep
- 3:25Speaker 3: him back for another year. Now they're ready to part ways,
- 3:28Speaker 3: why not go ahead and part ways with him yesterday? Again,
- 3:30Speaker 3: this goes back to how Jerry Jones thinks again, Membory,
- 3:33Speaker 3: He's he's got a big acting career going on right
- 3:35Speaker 3: now with Lambsman, right, He's got to focus on his
- 3:37Speaker 3: acting career. Season two filming soon, all that good stuff.
- 3:40Speaker 2: But I don't know.
- 3:41Speaker 3: Correct. It's a good question. Who would I want? I
- 3:43Speaker 3: think is vast different than who Jerry Jones would want
- 3:46Speaker 3: as a head coach.
- 3:47Speaker 2: I would I.
- 3:47Speaker 3: Would love to have. I would have loved to have Belichick.
- 3:49Speaker 3: I would have loved to have Mike Frabel. But I
- 3:52Speaker 3: don't see Mike Frabel wanting to come coach for the Cowboys.
- 3:55Speaker 2: Yeah, I think Rabel would be a really good candidate.
- 3:57Speaker 2: But I don't.
- 3:57Speaker 1: I don't think Rabel would count himself is a real
- 4:00Speaker 1: good He does not strike me as the kind of
- 4:04Speaker 1: guy who would want to be the so called Jerry
- 4:09Speaker 1: Jones company man. He does not strike me as that
- 4:12Speaker 1: kind of guy. He'd rather be a company man for
- 4:15Speaker 1: Bob Kraft because he played for all those years for
- 4:18Speaker 1: the Patriots, and Kraft knows him and he is I
- 4:21Speaker 1: found it interesting what Kraft said yesterday, how he put
- 4:24Speaker 1: Gerrod Mayo in what he called an untenable position, that
- 4:27Speaker 1: he wasn't ready to be a head coach, and they put
- 4:29Speaker 1: him there and said, now he's got to fire it
- 4:31Speaker 1: because of that. Okay, if it was your mistake, and
- 4:33Speaker 1: he said, those were the words, this was my mistake.
- 4:36Speaker 2: This is on me.
- 4:38Speaker 1: Okay, Well, why don't you give him a chance to
- 4:41Speaker 1: grow in the position and see what he can do. Yeah,
- 4:44Speaker 1: they forced that way too early, Craig. I mean, obviously
- 4:47Speaker 1: Mail was not ready to be a head coach, and
- 4:49Speaker 1: now they're dealing with the consequences.
- 4:51Speaker 2: But they get Mike Frable.
- 4:53Speaker 3: It might work out for them because I think Frable,
- 4:57Speaker 3: obviously he's a better head coach than drowd mail at
- 4:59Speaker 3: this point because see fre able to take a Tennessee
- 5:01Speaker 3: team with Ryan Tannehill at quarterback and the AFFC Championship.
- 5:05Speaker 2: Game Yep, yep. So it's that Patriot.
- 5:09Speaker 3: Way and all that stuff connections with Foxborough and so
- 5:12Speaker 3: it'll be interesting to see where it goes here.
- 5:13Speaker 1: All Right, I just wanted to start with a little
- 5:16Speaker 1: bit of the NFL because what we're gonna do during
- 5:19Speaker 1: a large measure of today's programs to let you hear
- 5:22Speaker 1: from long horn players and also a little bit from
- 5:25Speaker 1: Steve sarkaishan coming up. We're going to do that. There
- 5:26Speaker 1: was a little bit of sark sound we didn't get
- 5:28Speaker 1: to yesterday. I want to get to that. We'll do that.
- 5:31Speaker 1: But you're going to hear from Matthew Golden. You're going
- 5:34Speaker 1: to hear from some other Longhorn offensive players. Yesterday we
- 5:39Speaker 1: heard from defensive players. You'll hear from some offensive player
- 5:41Speaker 1: Jake Majors, the Longhorn center, you'll hear from them, Gunner
- 5:45Speaker 1: Helm on the Titan, and of course the quarterback. You'll
- 5:47Speaker 1: hear from quin Ewers that's coming up at the four
- 5:49Speaker 1: o'clock hour. You'll hear from viewers in Helm and Kelvin
- 5:52Speaker 1: Banks in the four o'clock hour. But we've got some
- 5:54Speaker 1: other Longhorn players we're going to get to. And we
- 5:58Speaker 1: are also going to take a take a close look
- 6:02Speaker 1: at the upcoming NFL playoffs.
- 6:05Speaker 2: We'll do that.
- 6:06Speaker 1: We're also going to take an upcoming look at the
- 6:10Speaker 1: college football playoffs down to the semifinal round. Almost, Cameron
- 6:14Speaker 1: at almost seems like an after thought that there's another
- 6:22Speaker 1: college football playoff semifinal before this and I and the
- 6:26Speaker 1: only reason why I say that is I say that
- 6:28Speaker 1: in this town because everyone is dialed into Texas Ohio State,
- 6:32Speaker 1: and I would imagine it's the same thing in Columbus, Ohio,
- 6:35Speaker 1: where folks are dialed into Ohio State and Texas, but
- 6:41Speaker 1: Notre Dame in Penn State. Two blue blood programs will
- 6:45Speaker 1: meet in Miami Gardens, Florida there at and what was
- 6:50Speaker 1: it called hard Rock Stadium, the Rock Cafe Stadium, Yeah,
- 6:55Speaker 1: on Thursday night in the Orange Bowl game.
- 6:59Speaker 2: And it did look for a while.
- 7:01Speaker 1: As though there was the possibility when these playoffs were
- 7:03Speaker 1: first starting, based on and we were thinking about higher
- 7:06Speaker 1: seeds advancing that Texas might wind up if there was
- 7:12Speaker 1: an upset, But not all of the top four seeds
- 7:16Speaker 1: who drew first round bys getting knocked out. If that
- 7:19Speaker 1: had not happened, but one or two of the higher
- 7:21Speaker 1: seeds that Texas might actually have to wind up going
- 7:24Speaker 1: to Miami and play in the Orange Bowl. That's not
- 7:26Speaker 1: the case. So they're in Arlington. I on purpose. Make
- 7:33Speaker 1: sure I'm not saying Dallas. I know that's the way
- 7:36Speaker 1: National TV in National Bee was that either going to Dallas.
- 7:38Speaker 2: They're going to.
- 7:40Speaker 1: Arlington is eighteen miles west of Dallas. It's in entirely
- 7:43Speaker 1: different county. It's in Terran County. There's a reason Jerry
- 7:46Speaker 1: Jones had that stadium built there because it was going
- 7:50Speaker 1: to work out money. By same thing with the Texas
- 7:52Speaker 1: Rangers when they first moved down from Washington all the
- 7:56Speaker 1: way back in nineteen seventy one, my broadcast mentor Bill
- 7:59Speaker 1: Mercer told me that there was very little consideration of
- 8:05Speaker 1: build a major league ballpark in Dallas, and so the
- 8:08Speaker 1: old Turnpike Stadium there in Arlington seemed to be a
- 8:10Speaker 1: logical home.
- 8:11Speaker 2: And that's where it wound up.
- 8:13Speaker 1: The Mavericks and Stars are playing in Dallas because they
- 8:15Speaker 1: had originally Reunion Arenup built for that purpose and then
- 8:19Speaker 1: the American Airline Center. But it's Arlington for the Cowboys
- 8:24Speaker 1: and Rangers. By the way, Cam speaking, which marked this
- 8:27Speaker 1: on your calendar, that a week from this Thursday, No,
- 8:32Speaker 1: two weeks from this Thursday, So sixteen days from now,
- 8:35Speaker 1: two weeks from this Thursday, the Texas Rangers Caravan is
- 8:39Speaker 1: coming back to Dell Diamond. Ooh see, I knew that
- 8:42Speaker 1: would act urne interest. The Rangers Caravan will be back
- 8:49Speaker 1: here in the Greater Austin area. Will be a Dell
- 8:51Speaker 1: Diamond around Rock. But anyway, the Loghorns play the Ohio
- 8:55Speaker 1: State Buckeyes in Arlington, and that's coming up on Friday,
- 8:59Speaker 1: NYE eight. There will be those of us who will
- 9:03Speaker 1: head up tomorrow. Now we do have Longhorn Weekly. We're
- 9:06Speaker 1: recording with head coach Rodney Terry tomorrow evening at Pluckers
- 9:11Speaker 1: from six to seven o'clock. The show will air on
- 9:13Speaker 1: Thursday night at seven. Normally you'll hear Rodney Terry live
- 9:18Speaker 1: at six o'clock on Thursday nights here on the Zone.
- 9:23Speaker 1: But because of the compressed schedule for both men's basketball
- 9:28Speaker 1: and for the football program, and.
- 9:30Speaker 2: For athletic staff and so many other reasons.
- 9:33Speaker 1: The program is going to be recorded tomorrow out at Pluckers,
- 9:35Speaker 1: So if you want to come out for the program,
- 9:37Speaker 1: feel free to do so. We're going to record that
- 9:39Speaker 1: from six to seven o'clock tomorrow. It will air seven
- 9:42Speaker 1: o'clock on Thursday night, just so you'll know. That'll be
- 9:45Speaker 1: the situation with Longhorn weekly with Rodney Terry, and then
- 9:49Speaker 1: those of us will head up to Arlington. The final
- 9:52Speaker 1: head coaches press conference will take place on Thursday about
- 9:58Speaker 1: twelve thirty, and then the tech As women have a
- 10:00Speaker 1: home game on Thursday night against Alabama. Good Alabama team,
- 10:03Speaker 1: they're number eighteen in the country, they're fifteen and one
- 10:06Speaker 1: coming in to Moody Center.
- 10:08Speaker 2: That's on Thursday night.
- 10:09Speaker 1: And then of course the Cotton Bowl game itself in
- 10:11Speaker 1: the semifinals. The college Football playoff will be Friday, and
- 10:15Speaker 1: our coverage will begin at three thirty Friday afternoon or
- 10:20Speaker 1: Cam and Mike Hardball hard and Mark Henry will all
- 10:23Speaker 1: be at Boomer Jacks in Arlington.
- 10:27Speaker 2: It's about a mile from the States, not far.
- 10:28Speaker 1: It's a great place to go. It's a Galliper form
- 10:31Speaker 1: in great sports bar there. It's on North Collins right there.
- 10:33Speaker 1: Collins and I thirty. It's easy to get to and
- 10:37Speaker 1: easy to get from there to the stadium. They'll be
- 10:39Speaker 1: there at three thirty on Friday, and then of course
- 10:41Speaker 1: network pregame at five thirty and the kickoff will actually
- 10:43Speaker 1: be at six forty five, so that's where it'll be,
- 10:46Speaker 1: all right. Up next, we're gonna hear from Longhorns receiver
- 10:50Speaker 1: Matthew Golden, also from Long Horns head coach Steve Sarkisian
- 10:52Speaker 1: when we continue here on sports Radio AM thirteen under
- 10:54Speaker 1: the Zone and the iHeartRadio app.
