- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's Wednesday.
- 0:15It is the 17th of December. Oh, only a week and a day to go
- 0:21before Christmas. Isn't it exciting?
- 0:22Oh, I can't wait. And next week we will finish up
- 0:26Daniel on Monday and then we will dive into Christmas
- 0:29readings and we will prepare ourselves for this incredible
- 0:33story to unfold next week on Thursday.
- 0:37How exciting. So we are here and the threshold
- 0:40of Christmas. And that's appropriate because
- 0:42today we are reading kind of a theological threshold chapter
- 0:4610. And Daniel is like this
- 0:48theological threshold into the the final two chapters where
- 0:52great things will unfold. And this chapter really is going
- 0:56to kind of set the scene. And while Daniel is, I mean,
- 1:00he's an old man, he is still in exile and he's fasting and he's
- 1:04praying, trying to appeal to God to let his people go back home
- 1:09to Israel. And while it feels like nothing
- 1:12is going on and there's no response to him, God kind of
- 1:15peels back the layers and allows him to see into the spiritual
- 1:18realm where all of this battling is going on.
- 1:21And his prayer is making a difference, but he just needs to
- 1:25wait. And waiting is not about being
- 1:28painful and delaying things, but it's about the slow, thorough
- 1:32work of God behind the scenes in the spiritual realm that we will
- 1:37likely have no idea is going on. So it is an encouragement for
- 1:41us. And God does indeed hear our
- 1:43prayers and does indeed respond, but sometimes in a place that we
- 1:48cannot observe. So let us unwrap this present.
- 1:53Let us step into this threshold through the doorway to the end
- 1:58of Daniel. As we read together Daniel
- 2:00chapter 10 in the third year of the reign
- 2:13of King Cyrus of Persia, Daniel, also known as Belte Jazzar, had
- 2:19another vision. He understood that the vision
- 2:22concerned events certain to happen in the future, times of
- 2:26war and great hardship. When this vision came to me, I,
- 2:31Daniel, had been mourning for three whole weeks.
- 2:35All that time I'd eaten no rich food, no meat or wine crossed my
- 2:40lips, and I used no fragrant lotions until those three weeks
- 2:44had passed. On April 23rd, as I was standing
- 2:48on the Bank of the great Tigris River, I looked up and saw a man
- 2:53dressed in linen clothing with a belt of pure gold around his
- 2:58waist. His body looked like a precious
- 3:00gem. His face flashed like lightning
- 3:04and his eyes flamed like torches.
- 3:06His arms and feet shone like polished bronze, and his voice
- 3:11roared like a vast multitude of people.
- 3:15Only I, Daniel, saw this vision. The men with me saw nothing, but
- 3:20they were suddenly terrified and ran away to hide.
- 3:23So I was left there all alone to see this amazing vision.
- 3:28My strength left me, my face grew deathly pale, and I felt
- 3:33very weak. Then I heard the man speak, and
- 3:36when I heard the sound of his voice, I fainted and lay there
- 3:40with my face to the ground. Just then a hand touched me and
- 3:44lifted me, still trembling, to my hands and knees.
- 3:49And the man said to me, Daniel, you are very precious to God, so
- 3:55listen carefully to what I have to say to you.
- 3:57Stand up, for I have been sent to you.
- 4:01When he said this to me, I stood up, still trembling.
- 4:05Then he said, Don't be afraid, Daniel.
- 4:09Since the first day you began to pray for understanding and to
- 4:13humble yourself before your God, Your request has been heard in
- 4:17heaven. I have come in answer to your
- 4:20prayer. But for 21 days the Spirit
- 4:24Prince of the Kingdom of Persia blocked my way.
- 4:28Then Michael, one of the archangels, came to help me, and
- 4:31I left him there with the Spirit Prince of the Kingdom of Persia.
- 4:36Now I am here to explain what will happen to your people in
- 4:40the future, for this vision concerns a time yet to come.
- 4:46While he was speaking to me, I looked down at the ground,
- 4:49unable to say a word. Then the one who looked like a
- 4:52man touched my lips, and I opened my mouth and began to
- 4:56speak. I said to the one standing in
- 4:59front of me. I'm filled with anguish because
- 5:02of the vision I've seen, my Lord, and I'm very weak.
- 5:06How can someone like me, your servant, talk to you?
- 5:10My Lord? My strength is gone and I can
- 5:13hardly breathe. Than the one who looked like a
- 5:16man touched me again and I felt my strength returning.
- 5:21Don't be afraid, he said, for you are very precious to God.
- 5:27Peace be encouraged, be strong. As he spoke these words to me, I
- 5:35suddenly felt stronger and said to him, Please speak to me, my
- 5:39Lord, for you have strengthened me.
- 5:42He replied. Do you know why I have come?
- 5:46Soon I must return to fight against the spirit Prince of the
- 5:50Kingdom of Persia, and after that the Spirit Prince of the
- 5:54Kingdom of Greece will come. Meanwhile, I will tell you what
- 5:59is written in the Book of Truth. No one helps me against these
- 6:03spirit Princess, except Michael, your Spirit Prince.
- 6:18Our Lord, we hear this repeated phrase in these verses where
- 6:23this heavenly creature says to Daniel more than one time that
- 6:27you are precious to God. And we hear this and we know
- 6:34that we are precious to You, Lord, and it doesn't make much
- 6:39sense why we, these little people who go about living our
- 6:43little lives making such silly mistakes day in and day out,
- 6:49would be so precious to you, this perfect, almighty and
- 6:53righteous God. But here we are, and that's the
- 6:56truth, and that's what Your Word tells us.
- 6:59I thank You that you would hear our prayer, that you would
- 7:03respond, and that you would take on these spiritual powers and
- 7:08principalities for us. And Jesus, ultimately, you took
- 7:14on the power of darkness for us, and you won that victory, and
- 7:19you share that victory with us through your victory on the
- 7:22cross. And you open your arms wide and
- 7:26you throw out this generous invitation for us to step into
- 7:29your embrace, into your victory, and be loved and held forever
- 7:35where the powers of darkness cannot touch us.
- 7:39And so we step in and we feel your embrace, and we thank you.
- 7:44We love you and we pray all of this in your wonderful, precious
- 7:49name. Amen.
