- 0:11Speaker 1: This is the Patriots Catch twenty two podcasts with Evan
- 0:14Speaker 1: Lazar and Alex Barth Bare and Lazarren.
- 0:18Speaker 2: Hello, everybody nailed it, Joined as always by ours.
- 0:25Speaker 1: Here is Evan Lazar and Alex barn. I mean, I
- 0:28Speaker 1: think there are people who play fantasy football who are
- 0:31Speaker 1: real football fans. I'm not saying all fantasy football players aren't.
- 0:34Speaker 1: I think there are some people who played fantasy football
- 0:37Speaker 1: and not a football fan in the sense that I
- 0:39Speaker 1: enjoy watching NFL, I mean a fan of the sport itself.
- 0:42Speaker 1: I think there are some people that play fantasy football.
- 0:44Speaker 1: They know the quarterbacks, the running backs, the wide receivers,
- 0:47Speaker 1: and the tight ends, and that's it. They know the numbers,
- 0:49Speaker 1: and they don't maybe know what's behind those numbers, how
- 0:51Speaker 1: they get there. That's what it.
- 0:53Speaker 3: Bothers me a little bit about the fantasy community. They
- 0:55Speaker 3: basically take the trenches out of their thinking.
- 0:58Speaker 2: And the defense entyre well, yeah, but like specifically, I
- 1:02Speaker 2: would say, I feel like if you only pay attention
- 1:07Speaker 2: to fantasy and that's how you base all your takes
- 1:09Speaker 2: off of just fantasy football, then do you acquiring wide
- 1:13Speaker 2: receivers and running backs and tight ends?
- 1:15Speaker 3: Is the only means that matter.
- 1:16Speaker 1: This and these are the people I'm talking to me.
- 1:19Speaker 3: I have a fantasy draft tonight. Actually, I'm in two
- 1:22Speaker 3: leagues this year, and I don't know how I feel
- 1:26Speaker 3: about it. I'm not gonna be I'm gonna be honest
- 1:27Speaker 3: with you. It's kind of lost a little bit of
- 1:31Speaker 3: its luster to me. Maybe that's just working in the.
- 1:33Speaker 1: Well, so you know, when people ask me why I
- 1:35Speaker 1: don't do it. I was never a big fan of
- 1:37Speaker 1: it to begin with. But the thing is, like what
- 1:39Speaker 1: I like doing was plopping down on the couch on Sunday, yes,
- 1:43Speaker 1: and watching the points come in real time and outside
- 1:47Speaker 1: of you know what, two or three weeks a year.
- 1:49Speaker 1: A few more this year is a few more prime
- 1:51Speaker 1: time age of the Patriots. But like, I really can't
- 1:53Speaker 1: do that on a Sunday and watching the Patriots game,
- 1:56Speaker 1: So that that took a lot out for me. I
- 1:58Speaker 1: do still need to set up the punter league.
- 2:02Speaker 3: I knew you were going to.
- 2:02Speaker 1: Can you do the draft tonight?
- 2:03Speaker 3: No, I can't. I have another fantasy draft to night.
- 2:05Speaker 1: By tomorrow night tomorrow, during the day, we'll figure out
- 2:10Speaker 1: I'm to make sure you want to draft. No, we'll
- 2:12Speaker 1: make sure you can do the draft. I don't want
- 2:14Speaker 1: to do the punter league with that. I'm not gonna
- 2:15Speaker 1: do that to you. I did it, I didn't do
- 2:17Speaker 1: it last year, and I know how much you missed it.
- 2:20Speaker 1: So I want to make sure you get involved this year.
- 2:22Speaker 3: No, I'm good. I'm good.
- 2:23Speaker 1: No, I don't worry. We'll get you in. Don't worry
- 2:25Speaker 1: about it. I'm happy to do it.
- 2:27Speaker 3: So one thing we were talking about from a fantasy thing.
- 2:29Speaker 3: Then I promise we'll move on from fantasy and talk
- 2:31Speaker 3: Patriots here in a second. But I was trying to think,
- 2:34Speaker 3: like how much of an advantage could having Travis Hunter
- 2:38Speaker 3: b because if he scores touchdowns on defense, then you
- 2:42Speaker 3: might get those points. But I guess in standard scoring
- 2:45Speaker 3: in most from most places like ESPN and stuff like that,
- 2:50Speaker 3: they'd only give you defensive points if it's an IDP league,
- 2:54Speaker 3: if it's like an individual defensive point.
- 2:56Speaker 1: And I think even if you had like Marcus Jones
- 2:58Speaker 1: as an IDP, I remember this was a thing like, yeah, touchdowns,
- 3:01Speaker 1: like you didn't get the points for that, which you should.
- 3:06Speaker 3: But yeah, so.
- 3:07Speaker 1: I'd like in baseball, I think you have to.
- 3:09Speaker 3: I thought I found a loophole with Travis Hunter. You know,
- 3:12Speaker 3: like Marcus Jones is another good one. Speaking Marcus Jones,
- 3:16Speaker 3: captain Captain Marcus Jones. I thought maybe I had found
- 3:19Speaker 3: a loophole, but I did not. It turns out, at
- 3:22Speaker 3: least based off of most standard scoring systems. All right,
- 3:25Speaker 3: that's enough Fantasy football. Evan Lazar Alex bar Alex behind
- 3:29Speaker 3: the glass with you here for the next couple of
- 3:31Speaker 3: hours on Patriots Catch twenty two one housekeeping item. I'm
- 3:35Speaker 3: hoping that we're going to be able to keep the
- 3:37Speaker 3: show at this time slot moving forward for the next
- 3:40Speaker 3: seventeen hopefully plus weeks moving forward in season. We'll see
- 3:45Speaker 3: if that's the case. We obviously have to adjust based off.
- 3:48Speaker 1: Of Monday night game and one Thursday, and we're one Thursday,
- 3:51Speaker 1: and I came, all goes out the window? Was it week?
- 3:53Speaker 1: Is week five? Monday night or Sunday night, Sunday night? Okay,
- 3:56Speaker 1: so in Buffalo we should have some Yeah, we only
- 3:58Speaker 1: have a non Sunday game.
- 4:00Speaker 3: It's late in the season. Yeah, it's a week eleven.
- 4:04Speaker 1: I want to say right there, the Thursday night football game,
- 4:06Speaker 1: right is they're Thursday and yeah, and then Monday nights
- 4:09Speaker 1: a few weeks later, so that'll be a mess, but
- 4:11Speaker 1: we get to get to that, yes.
- 4:13Speaker 3: So not too Yeah. I think we'll be able to
- 4:17Speaker 3: leave the show here, which will be good. So ten
- 4:20Speaker 3: to noon on Wednesdays, and of course you can get
- 4:23Speaker 3: the podcast wherever you get your podcasts. But I want
- 4:27Speaker 3: to open with some Patriots news. Then we are going
- 4:30Speaker 3: to talk a little bit big picture about the season
- 4:34Speaker 3: as a whole. I have nine questions going into the
- 4:37Speaker 3: season about your twenty twenty five Patriots. I don't like
- 4:40Speaker 3: using the word concerns because you know, we have to
- 4:43Speaker 3: be careful about concerns here, but also because I feel
- 4:47Speaker 3: like it's not necessarily that they're all concerns. I just
- 4:50Speaker 3: feel like they practices are questions. There are questions about
- 4:54Speaker 3: the team. So we have nine of them. We're gonna
- 4:56Speaker 3: get through those, and then we'll talk a little bit
- 4:58Speaker 3: of Raiders will take your Wonderful, We'll preview the game
- 5:01Speaker 3: on Sunday. We'll get some emails in. But starting with
- 5:04Speaker 3: the news, Alex, we were not on the air or
- 5:08Speaker 3: the show had already aired last week before the Patriots
- 5:11Speaker 3: released Jabriel Peppers. That happened on Friday, afternoon. A surprise,
- 5:15Speaker 3: A surprise, no doubt about it, one of those surprise
- 5:18Speaker 3: cuts that came out of nowhere. But I think one
- 5:21Speaker 3: of the big things that I took away from this mover,
- 5:24Speaker 3: or my take on the whole thing, I want to
- 5:26Speaker 3: be consistent because last week I gave them flowers for
- 5:31Speaker 3: holding their water on Kyle Duggar and Anthony Jennings and
- 5:34Speaker 3: at the time Kendrick Bourn until we found out that
- 5:36Speaker 3: that was also not for long. But I gave them
- 5:40Speaker 3: credit for holding the water on those guys and not
- 5:42Speaker 3: just giving up on those guys because they're not scheme
- 5:45Speaker 3: fits or whatever the case may be. You know, your
- 5:48Speaker 3: new regime, your guys like that whole thing. I thought
- 5:52Speaker 3: they were a little bit they were a year too early,
- 5:54Speaker 3: in my mind, from having the depth and the talent
- 5:57Speaker 3: on the roster to be able to do that and
- 6:00Speaker 3: cut ties with NFL players with NFL caliber talent was
- 6:04Speaker 3: starting caliber talent. Frankly, in the case of Jabriel Peppers,
- 6:08Speaker 3: I thought they were a little premature to do that
- 6:11Speaker 3: this time around. I was a little bit surprised that
- 6:13Speaker 3: they did do that. I thought they were going to
- 6:15Speaker 3: hold on to some of these guys through the season
- 6:17Speaker 3: and just see where it shakes out. So that's just
- 6:19Speaker 3: my opinion on it. But at the same time, just
- 6:22Speaker 3: to talk about why it happened, I think at some
- 6:25Speaker 3: point in this offseason, pretty early on, I would say,
- 6:28Speaker 3: maybe even in the spring, because Kyle Dugger, remember he
- 6:31Speaker 3: wasn't practicing, is still working back from that ankle injury
- 6:34Speaker 3: during OTAs, it felt like they decided it was gonna
- 6:39Speaker 3: be Kyle Dugger or Jabriel Peppers, not Kyle Dugger and
- 6:42Speaker 3: Jabriel Peppers. At some point pretty early on in this
- 6:46Speaker 3: offseason in this process, so they decided and they looked
- 6:49Speaker 3: at it and said, we feel like we are better
- 6:53Speaker 3: off playing what's really a true free safety and a
- 6:57Speaker 3: true strong safety or a box safety, and not playing
- 7:00Speaker 3: those two guys together, which was the vision when they
- 7:03Speaker 3: signed both those guys to contract extensions last offseason. So
- 7:07Speaker 3: now this new regime comes in and we can get
- 7:09Speaker 3: into the minutia of the scheme and all the different
- 7:11Speaker 3: things that go into it. But I think they decided
- 7:14Speaker 3: that they were not stylistically a fit as a pairing.
- 7:18Speaker 3: And we had talked about this when they extended these players,
- 7:22Speaker 3: that they were a little bit redundant, that there was
- 7:24Speaker 3: definitely skill set overlap between the two of them, And
- 7:27Speaker 3: it seems to me, just from the outside looking in,
- 7:30Speaker 3: that Mike Vrabel and this coaching staff agreed that they
- 7:33Speaker 3: were too redundant to one another. Now, the second point
- 7:37Speaker 3: of that is, if you know that there's really only
- 7:40Speaker 3: a role for one of these guys on the team,
- 7:44Speaker 3: that only one of these guys is really going to
- 7:46Speaker 3: see any sort of amount of playing time, then you
- 7:49Speaker 3: have a culture locker room angle of this as well,
- 7:53Speaker 3: where if a guy like Jabriel Peppers, who former captain,
- 7:58Speaker 3: well paid player, outspoken player that sort of has a
- 8:04Speaker 3: feel I would say for the beat of the team
- 8:06Speaker 3: and the heartbeat of the team, if you have a
- 8:09Speaker 3: guy like Dad that is not playing on Sundays, what
- 8:13Speaker 3: does that do to sort of the leadership structure of
- 8:17Speaker 3: your roster. So I think that's why we got here.
- 8:20Speaker 3: I think it's Dugger or Peppers, not Dugger and Peppers
- 8:24Speaker 3: from a football standpoint. And then also how was that
- 8:28Speaker 3: going to jive in the locker room If Kyle Dugger
- 8:32Speaker 3: and Jabrel Peppers are your too highest paid safeties aren't
- 8:35Speaker 3: playing on Sundays. What was your take on the whole move.
- 8:39Speaker 1: I agree with the lot of that. I just you know,
- 8:41Speaker 1: so I and I think if they had traded Dougger,
- 8:44Speaker 1: Peppers would still be here. But going from Dugger looking
- 8:47Speaker 1: like the odd man out to Peppers, who ultimately did
- 8:50Speaker 1: they think would help the team more and you just
- 8:53Speaker 1: kind of hope that's what was driving the decision. But
- 8:56Speaker 1: I was surprised because the difference between Dugger and Peppers.
- 8:59Speaker 1: Pepper rolled in decrease until really late in the summer,
- 9:02Speaker 1: to the point where I kind of wondered if it
- 9:04Speaker 1: was just a load management thing to keep him fresh
- 9:07Speaker 1: for the regular season, and obviously, looking back, that wasn't it.
- 9:09Speaker 1: But this guy looked like a leader. We saw it
- 9:12Speaker 1: in Fortune Foxborough, right and it was just apparent if
- 9:15Speaker 1: you were watching this team day in and day out
- 9:17Speaker 1: in camp. And yeah, I was pretty surprised by it.
- 9:22Speaker 1: You know, good player, I think, still a good player.
- 9:25Speaker 1: It puts a lot of pressure on Craig Woodson. And
- 9:28Speaker 1: that's kind of a theme. I know you have your
- 9:30Speaker 1: seven questions. I have one big one and then a
- 9:33Speaker 1: couple of smaller ones I want to get to. I
- 9:34Speaker 1: don't know where you want to fit mine in, But like,
- 9:37Speaker 1: that's another rookie that's going to be front and center
- 9:40Speaker 1: for this team.
- 9:40Speaker 3: Yeah. Absolutely, And I get that, you know, I said
- 9:45Speaker 3: this to Paul the other day. I get if you're
- 9:46Speaker 3: doing Madden ratings, Yeah, then Kyle dugger and Jabriel Peppers
- 9:51Speaker 3: are probably rated higher in the game than Jalen Hawkins
- 9:55Speaker 3: and Craig Woodson. But what they're asking these safeties to
- 9:59Speaker 3: do is going to be sick magnificantly different. And I
- 10:02Speaker 3: think the biggest part of what they're asking them to
- 10:04Speaker 3: do that's different because to me, I've heard a lot
- 10:06Speaker 3: about how they're going to ask the safeties to cover
- 10:09Speaker 3: in man. I think they always had the safeties covered
- 10:11Speaker 3: in man, like Patrick Chung was their tight end stopper
- 10:15Speaker 3: for years here. I think early on in Kyle Duggar's career,
- 10:19Speaker 3: when he was playing off of Devin mccordy, he covered
- 10:22Speaker 3: tight ends a lot pretty frequently. So I don't think
- 10:24Speaker 3: that the man to man stuff is necessarily new. What
- 10:27Speaker 3: I think is new is that they're going to be
- 10:28Speaker 3: playing a lot more in the deep part of the
- 10:30Speaker 3: field as safeties, whether it's split safety structures like quarters
- 10:33Speaker 3: coverage or Cover four. I think they're going to be
- 10:36Speaker 3: doing a lot more that they're going to be a
- 10:37Speaker 3: lot doing a lot more of Tampa or Cover two,
- 10:40Speaker 3: and so in that you need to have safeties that
- 10:43Speaker 3: are athletic, rangey, instinctive players playing over the top of
- 10:48Speaker 3: the defense. And I just don't think that either one
- 10:50Speaker 3: of these guys in Pepper's or dugger are really built
- 10:54Speaker 3: to do that at a high level. And maybe Jalen
- 10:58Speaker 3: Hawkins and Craig Woodson aren't the splash players, impact on
- 11:03Speaker 3: the ball production type guys that Duggar and Peppers would
- 11:06Speaker 3: have been or are, but they're going to keep the
- 11:10Speaker 3: top on the defense, and I think at the end
- 11:12Speaker 3: of the day, that's what they're more looking for their
- 11:15Speaker 3: safeties to do. To sum it up, you know, maybe
- 11:17Speaker 3: a little bit more concisely, they now want the safeties
- 11:20Speaker 3: to be past game players. They want those guys to
- 11:23Speaker 3: be cover players. They want those guys to cover ground,
- 11:26Speaker 3: to cover space in the deep part of the field,
- 11:29Speaker 3: and not so much be we're coming downhill at the
- 11:32Speaker 3: line of scrimmage and stopping the run with our safeties.
- 11:35Speaker 3: So that's a big difference in scheme and big difference
- 11:39Speaker 3: in skill set, and I don't think it. Mike Rabel
- 11:41Speaker 3: downplayed the scheme thing as a factor in all this,
- 11:44Speaker 3: but then he was asked directly about Craig Woodson and
- 11:47Speaker 3: immediately brought up athleticism in range. So I feel like
- 11:51Speaker 3: that is not a mistake or that was not unrelated there.
- 11:55Speaker 3: So that's Jabriel Peppers. One last thing on Peppers are
- 11:59Speaker 3: using surprized that because I took the timing of it
- 12:03Speaker 3: as they were probably trying to find a trade for
- 12:06Speaker 3: one of those guys, Kyle Dugger or Gabriel Peppers. I
- 12:09Speaker 3: know there's a ton of reporting out there that Kyle
- 12:12Speaker 3: Dugger was on the trade block and teams were very
- 12:14Speaker 3: well aware that he could be had in the trade.
- 12:19Speaker 3: So the timing of it to me speaks to they
- 12:23Speaker 3: probably were trying to trade Kyle Dugger or Jabriel Peppers.
- 12:26Speaker 1: Yeah, they didn't.
- 12:27Speaker 3: Really get an offer that they loved, and frankly, Jabriel
- 12:30Speaker 3: Peppers was easier to cut from a contractual standpoint. But
- 12:33Speaker 3: are you surprised that there was not more of a
- 12:35Speaker 3: market to trade either one of those.
- 12:37Speaker 1: Guys Peppers definitely. I think Dugger, just because of the contract,
- 12:41Speaker 1: maybe made it a little tougher. But Peppers has shown
- 12:45Speaker 1: he can still be a contributing player. So you know,
- 12:47Speaker 1: maybe some teams were the injury last year and him,
- 12:50Speaker 1: you know, him missing time last year. But yeah, I
- 12:53Speaker 1: was a little surprised. I'd want Jabrill Peppers on my
- 12:56Speaker 1: football team, I'll tell you that.
- 12:57Speaker 3: Yeah, Yeah, it's a good point. I was surprised. I
- 13:00Speaker 3: thought they would be able to get some even if
- 13:02Speaker 3: it's just day three, right swap.
- 13:04Speaker 1: If you're like a contender and you're looking for somebody
- 13:07Speaker 1: to come in and bring a little edge to your defense,
- 13:09Speaker 1: it's exactly the guy you're looking for to me.
- 13:11Speaker 3: Yeah. The other bit of news here over the last
- 13:15Speaker 3: couple of days Patriots announcing their captains six captains Drake
- 13:19Speaker 3: May Hunter, Henry Robert Spoleain and Harold Landry, Marcus Jones
- 13:23Speaker 3: and Brennan school Are. I'm not surprised by most of those.
- 13:26Speaker 3: I am surprised a little bit by Marcus Jones, not
- 13:29Speaker 3: because anything, you know, disrespect meant to Marcus Jones. I
- 13:33Speaker 3: just didn't really see that one coming. And I am
- 13:35Speaker 3: a little bit surprised that Morgan Moses was not named
- 13:39Speaker 3: a captain. But what was your take on the captains
- 13:42Speaker 3: and more specifically, any surprises for you.
- 13:45Speaker 1: Morgan Moses was a little bit of surprise. I think
- 13:47Speaker 1: mainly like a good mix of returning players and guys
- 13:51Speaker 1: who are new you know, Splaine and Landry. Those are
- 13:54Speaker 1: two guys that this coaching staff is very familiar with,
- 13:57Speaker 1: even though they're new to New England, so that doesn't
- 13:59Speaker 1: surprise me. Aton Schooler was the obvious choice for the
- 14:03Speaker 1: Special Teams captain. C Drake May starting quarterback like last
- 14:08Speaker 1: year was different. He was a rookie, but he was
- 14:09Speaker 1: going to be a captain this year. Really the two
- 14:12Speaker 1: you know spots up in the air, Hunter Henry and
- 14:13Speaker 1: Marcus Jones. With all the turnover, were they going to
- 14:16Speaker 1: bring back a guy who was a captain last year?
- 14:18Speaker 1: And Hunter Henry and I think he's somebody Mike Rabels
- 14:21Speaker 1: talked about his leadership. I think he's somebody that has
- 14:23Speaker 1: earned that. And then Marcus Jones there were some questions
- 14:26Speaker 1: about just how big of a role he'd play on
- 14:28Speaker 1: this team as one of those holdovers, another guy where
- 14:30Speaker 1: there were scheme fit questions. Not the Special Teams captain.
- 14:33Speaker 1: I don't think they have two Special Teams captains. That
- 14:35Speaker 1: would be pretty rare. Maybe the defense special teams captain,
- 14:40Speaker 1: but I think that's a sign that they still have
- 14:42Speaker 1: big plans from on defense. I saw some people surprise
- 14:44Speaker 1: Christian Gonzalez isn't a captain. Nothing against Gonzales, kind of
- 14:49Speaker 1: a quieter guy. I don't know that he's like that.
- 14:54Speaker 1: Those are all very vocal players. There's not a lot
- 14:56Speaker 1: of outside of maybe Landry, you know, and maybe this
- 15:00Speaker 1: is just my point of view, but Drake may is
- 15:02Speaker 1: obviously the quarterback. Roberts splain. You hear him a lot
- 15:04Speaker 1: at practice. He's jumping around, he's bought around. Hunter Henry's
- 15:07Speaker 1: a guy that you know, is a veteran that you
- 15:09Speaker 1: see a lot of the players gravitate towards younger players,
- 15:11Speaker 1: gravitate towards Marcus Jones, a guy that has been a
- 15:14Speaker 1: vocal leader on this team. You saw it going back
- 15:16Speaker 1: to last year. And I think they really not a
- 15:21Speaker 1: lot of those quiet, lead by example kind of guys.
- 15:24Speaker 1: These are are first off the bus, front of the
- 15:27Speaker 1: line guys. And it doesn't surprise me that's what Mike
- 15:29Speaker 1: Gravel wants. But it's nothing against Gonzales. I just think
- 15:33Speaker 1: there's kind of a theme here that he maybe doesn't
- 15:35Speaker 1: fit as.
- 15:36Speaker 3: Much Yeah, honestly, I didn't even consider Christian Gonzalez and
- 15:39Speaker 3: they're running to be a captain. And again that's no
- 15:41Speaker 3: disrespect to Christian Gonzales whatsoever. But and I was on
- 15:45Speaker 3: your station last night with Joe Murray and he brought up,
- 15:48Speaker 3: like Marcus Jones being a captain. This is what your
- 15:50Speaker 3: station does, right. They spin it as like it was
- 15:52Speaker 3: just a shot at Gonzalz. I didn't even consider that
- 15:55Speaker 3: angle of it because to all your points, I don't
- 15:57Speaker 3: think Gonzales is really necessarily that vocal guy. I think
- 16:01Speaker 3: there will be a point in his career where he's
- 16:03Speaker 3: sort of like the elder statesman and it becomes like
- 16:06Speaker 3: a quiet leader and just someone that people lead by
- 16:10Speaker 3: example and look at and say, that's that's the peak.
- 16:14Speaker 3: You know, that's a guy that is doing it at
- 16:17Speaker 3: a really high level. And then also frankly, like he
- 16:19Speaker 3: hasn't practiced since July twenty eight.
- 16:21Speaker 1: That's probably and we're going to get to that.
- 16:23Speaker 3: But that's a big part of this is like, these
- 16:26Speaker 3: are the guys that have been there, that have been
- 16:28Speaker 3: practicing every single day, that have been out on the
- 16:31Speaker 3: field and in the meeting rooms and in the huddles
- 16:33Speaker 3: and all that good stuff. So it's again, it's not
- 16:36Speaker 3: a knock on on Gonzales. I just I don't really
- 16:39Speaker 3: I don't really care to be honest with you about
- 16:42Speaker 3: like is this guy a captain? Is this guy not
- 16:44Speaker 3: a captain when it comes to like the best players
- 16:46Speaker 3: on the team, right, So it doesn't really bother me
- 16:49Speaker 3: one way or another. But there's the last thing on
- 16:52Speaker 3: the captains. One thing I was thinking about with Marcus Jones.
- 16:56Speaker 3: I agree with you that he's like a sneaky, vocal guy.
- 16:59Speaker 3: He's also a that has a little bit of what's
- 17:03Speaker 3: the word like overlap or similarities in with Mike Rabel
- 17:07Speaker 3: and the fact that he plays in multiple phases. And
- 17:10Speaker 3: I wonder if that was a factor at all that
- 17:12Speaker 3: Mike Rabel sees even though they're very different players, very
- 17:15Speaker 3: different positions, all that stuff, he sees a little bit
- 17:19Speaker 3: of himself in terms of like the sacrifice for the team.
- 17:22Speaker 3: Like if they said to Marcus Jones, we want to
- 17:25Speaker 3: put you on offense, he would play offense. If they
- 17:27Speaker 3: want him to return kicks and punts, he's returning kicks
- 17:29Speaker 3: and punts. If they wanted to play slock corner if
- 17:31Speaker 3: they want him to play safety, like he's doing all
- 17:33Speaker 3: of it. And Mike Rabel was the same way as
- 17:35Speaker 3: a player. He was a three phase player, and I
- 17:38Speaker 3: wonder if there's a little bit of that going on
- 17:40Speaker 3: with Marcus Jones as well.
- 17:41Speaker 1: So do we know so two things? Well, do we
- 17:44Speaker 1: know if they're going to actually physically wear the sea
- 17:46Speaker 1: this year?
- 17:47Speaker 3: I believe so, but I don't know that for a fact.
- 17:50Speaker 1: The other thing I do like that they did this.
- 17:52Speaker 1: So there's those six captains, But then Calebon Chase On
- 17:56Speaker 1: is going to be a game day captain or a
- 17:58Speaker 1: week by week captain. For week one it's against his
- 18:01Speaker 1: former team obviously had a great summer. I think deserves
- 18:05Speaker 1: some recognition. Do we know is this gonna be like,
- 18:08Speaker 1: is there gonna be a game day captain every week?
- 18:10Speaker 3: That would be My guess is that it's gonna rotate.
- 18:12Speaker 1: Love that that's super college football, yep. But I just
- 18:16Speaker 1: think that's a cool thing, Like it's a good way
- 18:19Speaker 1: get guys a little extra recognition. You'll see a lot
- 18:21Speaker 1: of the times, like is the case with Chase On
- 18:23Speaker 1: it's against you know, a former team, or maybe if
- 18:26Speaker 1: a guy is a really big matchup that week and
- 18:28Speaker 1: just kind of hey, we got your back, we're behind
- 18:30Speaker 1: you thing. I've always liked, you know. Again, that's more
- 18:32Speaker 1: of a college thing than the NFL thing. Although I
- 18:35Speaker 1: know the Titans did it last year post Rabel because
- 18:38Speaker 1: Harold Lanjury was a game day captain at one point
- 18:41Speaker 1: last season. I don't know if Rabel did it in
- 18:43Speaker 1: Tennessee before that. I need to look that up. But
- 18:46Speaker 1: I'm a fan of it. I think it's a cool,
- 18:48Speaker 1: cool little thing, and it'll be fun to track that
- 18:49Speaker 1: all year.
- 18:50Speaker 3: Yeah, that is a cool thing and it'll be fun
- 18:52Speaker 3: to track. I agree, And I like it too, because
- 18:54Speaker 3: even though it's probably not a ton like at least
- 18:57Speaker 3: it's it might be a little bit of motivation for
- 18:59Speaker 3: some of these up guys that weren't named captains but
- 19:02Speaker 3: probably deserve to be recognized as leaders of this team.
- 19:06Speaker 3: Like that might be, you know, one week, the game
- 19:08Speaker 3: day captain, like when they play the Jets at Morgan Moses, right,
- 19:11Speaker 3: you know, something like that, Like they just to give
- 19:13Speaker 3: those guys a little bit of kudos in a little
- 19:16Speaker 3: bit of love, even though they're not considered permanent captains.
- 19:19Speaker 3: So that's the news of the day.
- 19:21Speaker 1: And so it looks like Tennessee just had seven captains.
- 19:24Speaker 3: So I thought they had seven captains is last year.
- 19:27Speaker 3: I had looked that up before the captains came out
- 19:29Speaker 3: to try to get a gauge of of exactly how
- 19:32Speaker 3: many they would have. So it sounds like they're doing
- 19:34Speaker 3: six plus one with rotating game day captain as as
- 19:39Speaker 3: instead of seven permanent captains. Really quickly, though, do you
- 19:45Speaker 3: know what I like to eat, Alex when I'm watching
- 19:47Speaker 3: football games? Some toastedos?
- 19:50Speaker 4: Do you?
- 19:50Speaker 3: Are you toasted too?
- 19:52Speaker 5: So?
- 19:53Speaker 3: Football fans, though, know that traditions matter, turning moments together
- 19:56Speaker 3: into some something truly epic. They're what inspires to make
- 20:00Speaker 3: are masa and tostedos the traditional ways, starting with whole
- 20:04Speaker 3: corn kernels, no artificial flavors, colors, or preservatives, all to
- 20:08Speaker 3: give you that perfect crunch. Discover your next tradition this
- 20:11Speaker 3: football season. Head to this door, grab your tostito's team
- 20:14Speaker 3: bag and scan the code for a chance to score
- 20:17Speaker 3: in an epic experience with the Patriots. Toastedos. Tradition matters.
- 20:22Speaker 3: All right, let's get to our questions. I have seven
- 20:25Speaker 3: plus plus two from you, so nine questions seven on
- 20:29Speaker 3: my own. We'll get to your questions. Don't worry. I'll
- 20:31Speaker 3: mix them in there.
- 20:33Speaker 1: But I do mine first or last because mine's much
- 20:36Speaker 1: more bigger picture of yours are more individually focused.
- 20:38Speaker 3: Okay, we'll mix them in there. Okay, So I think
- 20:42Speaker 3: you got to start here whenever you're talking about big
- 20:47Speaker 3: picture questions with the Patriots, and that's just what Drake May.
- 20:50Speaker 3: And we've given a lot of takes on this show
- 20:52Speaker 3: about Drake May over the last several months and where
- 20:55Speaker 3: he's at and all that good stuff. But now the
- 20:57Speaker 3: regular season's here and it's time to really see where
- 21:01Speaker 3: he's progressed and all that stuff. So my question with
- 21:04Speaker 3: Drake May is does he take that next step? I
- 21:06Speaker 3: think that's the number one question with this team right now.
- 21:09Speaker 3: But also like what would that look like to you?
- 21:11Speaker 3: What would it look like for him to take the
- 21:13Speaker 3: next step? Because I think it's subjective. It could be
- 21:16Speaker 3: wins losses, it could be statistical production, it could be
- 21:20Speaker 3: eye tests, Like there's a lot of different ways that
- 21:22Speaker 3: you could uh, a lot of different angles, and it's
- 21:25Speaker 3: I think a subjective thing person to person.
- 21:27Speaker 1: So I mean I think it's multiple things, right. The
- 21:29Speaker 1: big number that I've continually thrown out under a turnover
- 21:32Speaker 1: a game. So if he plays all seventeen games and
- 21:36Speaker 1: this is interceptions and fumbles sixteen or fewer interceptions in fumbles,
- 21:41Speaker 1: now that can't come at the expense of making plays.
- 21:45Speaker 1: You want to see the touchdowns as well. But that's
- 21:47Speaker 1: kind of been a big one for me because I
- 21:50Speaker 1: think this defense should be a turnover game defense. I
- 21:53Speaker 1: really do. So if Drake may can keep it under
- 21:56Speaker 1: a turnover game, you've now won the turnover battle for
- 21:58Speaker 1: the season. That is going to really help you out.
- 22:01Speaker 1: The other thing a lot of people point to year
- 22:04Speaker 1: two is kind of the make it or break it
- 22:06Speaker 1: year for quarterbacks, and there's some truth to that. Usually
- 22:08Speaker 1: if you don't figure it out by the end by
- 22:11Speaker 1: the end of year two, you're not gonna have much
- 22:14Speaker 1: success in the NFL as a quarterback. Right You get
- 22:16Speaker 1: these guys like Baker Mayfield and Gino Smith and we'll
- 22:20Speaker 1: see this week in Sam Darnold, but they usually have
- 22:22Speaker 1: to change teams and it's years later, and you know,
- 22:25Speaker 1: if you're going to kind of hit it from the
- 22:27Speaker 1: jump as a top pick and justify that pick, you
- 22:30Speaker 1: got to show progress in year two. Josh Allen was
- 22:32Speaker 1: one of these guys. Lamar Jackson, Jalen Hurts. I think
- 22:34Speaker 1: Bryce Young will see what he does this year, but
- 22:36Speaker 1: people realize how good Bryce Young was second half of
- 22:39Speaker 1: last season. We'll see if he can continue to build
- 22:41Speaker 1: on that. But there's also within that, whether it's Alan
- 22:47Speaker 1: Burrow Hurts, I mean, a lot of these top quarterbacks
- 22:50Speaker 1: who kind of it clicked in year two for them,
- 22:53Speaker 1: they were a lot better in the second half of
- 22:55Speaker 1: the season than they were in the first. And it
- 22:57Speaker 1: wasn't like they flipped a switch and we eate and
- 22:59Speaker 1: suddenly we're good. But there was this gradual growth. So
- 23:03Speaker 1: however you want to measure it, turnovers, touchdowns, you want
- 23:06Speaker 1: to use one of your for cock to numbers, go
- 23:08Speaker 1: for it is Drake May better at the end of
- 23:11Speaker 1: the year than he was at the beginning. I think
- 23:12Speaker 1: that's also very important. I don't want Drake May to
- 23:16Speaker 1: play his best game of the year this Sunday. I
- 23:18Speaker 1: hope he plays a good game and it'd be great
- 23:20Speaker 1: if he plays his best game of the year this
- 23:22Speaker 1: Sunday and we look back at it and say he
- 23:25Speaker 1: peaked in the opener, that's probably not a good thing.
- 23:28Speaker 1: Remember who peaked in the opener year too. Talking Matt Jones, Yeah,
- 23:32Speaker 1: I had a whole thing about he threw for three
- 23:34Speaker 1: hundred yards. Why you worried some of us didn't really
- 23:36Speaker 1: feel like you were. You stood on that hill alone
- 23:39Speaker 1: and you were correct. I wanted to give you your
- 23:41Speaker 1: flowers for that. So that's not me saying I hope
- 23:43Speaker 1: Drake may sucks Sunday. Obviously not. But and it's not linear.
- 23:47Speaker 1: There's going to be some up and some down. But
- 23:50Speaker 1: his last eight games collectively should be better than his
- 23:52Speaker 1: first eight games, if that makes sense. Like I just
- 23:55Speaker 1: I want to see him continue to get better over
- 23:57Speaker 1: the course of the year. If he's stagnant, even if
- 24:00Speaker 1: he's okay, but he's just stagnantly okay, that would be
- 24:04Speaker 1: a little worrying long term. So cut down on the
- 24:07Speaker 1: turnovers and improve as the season goes on. Those are
- 24:10Speaker 1: my two big check marks for him.
- 24:12Speaker 3: Yeah, I agree with that. I think the mine is
- 24:16Speaker 3: more and I think yours is too. Like I test subjective,
- 24:20Speaker 3: you know, just sort of feel thing.
- 24:22Speaker 1: I can't give you an exactly, like, thirty touchdowns would
- 24:24Speaker 1: be great, but if it's thirty touchdowns and twenty five turnovers,
- 24:27Speaker 1: I'd be kind of worried about that. And he's Jameis Winston.
- 24:29Speaker 3: And I'm also not like a big I don't really
- 24:32Speaker 3: do counting stats either, because if he has twenty touchdowns
- 24:35Speaker 3: but they have like twenty five rushing touchdowns to a
- 24:40Speaker 3: team because they're running it in from.
- 24:41Speaker 1: The five yard If they're running in from the five
- 24:44Speaker 1: yard line all the time, don't you think he's going
- 24:46Speaker 1: to be a little part of that.
- 24:47Speaker 3: Yeah, But I'm just saying, like, if that is what
- 24:49Speaker 3: they do, is they get down you know, he gets
- 24:51Speaker 3: them down there and then they're just a smash mount
- 24:53Speaker 3: team at the goal line and they're just punching the
- 24:55Speaker 3: ball in without throwing it. Then I'm not going to
- 24:57Speaker 3: hold that against Drake May that they didn't have a
- 24:59Speaker 3: to in a red zone passing production because they're running
- 25:02Speaker 3: the football effectively down in the red zone. So what
- 25:05Speaker 3: I look at with Drake May and I think this
- 25:07Speaker 3: is just true for all these quarterbacks, and it's sort
- 25:09Speaker 3: of a feeld thing or an eye test thing that
- 25:11Speaker 3: you're just gonna have to trust your gut on is
- 25:14Speaker 3: does he start to take control of games? Like, does
- 25:17Speaker 3: he start to really be a master at his craft,
- 25:22Speaker 3: and I think when you look at all these great
- 25:23Speaker 3: quarterbacks across the league, what you notice with all of
- 25:26Speaker 3: them is that they have this like cool, calm sense
- 25:29Speaker 3: of the game where it just feels like they are
- 25:33Speaker 3: the ones that are operating at a higher level than
- 25:36Speaker 3: everybody else And to your point about it getting better
- 25:40Speaker 3: as the season progresses, this is probably not going to
- 25:43Speaker 3: happen immediately for Drake May, especially with a new offense
- 25:46Speaker 3: and a new offensive coordinator and a new system to
- 25:49Speaker 3: assimilate to, but eventually you'd like to see him have
- 25:52Speaker 3: that feel of the game where it is clear that
- 25:56Speaker 3: he's the one dictating the terms of the game to
- 25:59Speaker 3: the defense versus reacting to the defense. And I wonder
- 26:04Speaker 3: if they can get him to that point this year.
- 26:06Speaker 3: I might be a little bit too high of a bar,
- 26:08Speaker 3: but just when I watch quarterbacks around the league, whether
- 26:10Speaker 3: it's Lamar, whether it's Allan, whether it's Burrow, whether it's Mahomes.
- 26:14Speaker 3: Obviously Brady here for us for the last twenty years,
- 26:17Speaker 3: you can tell that they have this They are above
- 26:21Speaker 3: it right, like they're operating above everybody else where. They
- 26:25Speaker 3: have this instinctive feel for the game and That's what
- 26:27Speaker 3: I would like to see from Drake May. I understand
- 26:29Speaker 3: that he has all the physical abilities. I understand that
- 26:32Speaker 3: he can make some unbelievably good throws, but can he
- 26:35Speaker 3: situationally lock it down? Can he perform late in games?
- 26:40Speaker 3: Is he going to be able to you know, third down,
- 26:43Speaker 3: they're going to throw something exotic at us, and we're
- 26:46Speaker 3: going to handle that from a pre snap perspective of
- 26:49Speaker 3: getting everybody blocked and knowing where our weaknesses are, our
- 26:52Speaker 3: vulnerabilities are, and being able to beat those types of things.
- 26:55Speaker 3: Once you're playing that chess match as a quarterback, that's
- 26:58Speaker 3: when you're reaching that next level. Because all these guys
- 27:01Speaker 3: have physical talent. I think you can name twenty quarterbacks,
- 27:04Speaker 3: twenty five quarterbacks in the NFL that have physical talent.
- 27:07Speaker 3: But the question is is can you really be the maestro?
- 27:10Speaker 3: Can you be that chess master above all else? And
- 27:15Speaker 3: I think that's what made Brady great, I think that's
- 27:17Speaker 3: what made Manning great. I think that's what made a
- 27:19Speaker 3: lot of these guys great. So I'm looking for Drake
- 27:21Speaker 3: May to take that next step there because we will
- 27:24Speaker 3: be able to at the end of the season make
- 27:26Speaker 3: a sizzle reel of fifteen great Drake maythrows, I have
- 27:30Speaker 3: no doubt about that. But is he going to be clutch?
- 27:34Speaker 3: Is he going to be situationally locked in?
- 27:36Speaker 1: Is he going to be consistent?
- 27:37Speaker 3: Is he going to be consistent? Is he going to
- 27:39Speaker 3: solve problems on the fly that the defenses are presenting
- 27:43Speaker 3: to him and be a step ahead of defenses. I
- 27:45Speaker 3: think that's where they really need to get him going.
- 27:49Speaker 3: Is the thinking part of the game more so than
- 27:52Speaker 3: anything to do with physical. That's decision making too, to
- 27:55Speaker 3: your point about turnof yes, So all that stuff is
- 27:58Speaker 3: really the next step. And I love I love Mike
- 28:01Speaker 3: Vrabel's approach. I love you know, Josh McDaniels too. But
- 28:05Speaker 3: we've seen it in all the behind the scenes stuff
- 28:07Speaker 3: in Forge and Foxborough, how much he's pushing Drake May
- 28:10Speaker 3: on those elements of it, of being clutch, of being
- 28:14Speaker 3: on the details, situationally on leading, on you know, showing
- 28:18Speaker 3: that energy and that leadership quality to his teammates. That
- 28:22Speaker 3: that is going to end up making or breaking this
- 28:25Speaker 3: this quarterback, it breaks and breaks all of these guys.
- 28:28Speaker 1: So just real quick, quick to close the loop on
- 28:31Speaker 1: what I was saying earlier, Josh Allen second year, Yes,
- 28:35Speaker 1: first five games, five touchdowns, seven interceptions, two hundred twenty
- 28:42Speaker 1: four passing yards per game, finishes the season with three
- 28:45Speaker 1: thousand yards, twenty touchdowns, nine er scepters. I know some
- 28:47Speaker 1: of these guys have running stats, but nobody's really worried
- 28:49Speaker 1: about Drake May's ability to run the ball. Jalen Hurts,
- 28:51Speaker 1: super Bowl winning quarterback. Year two starts three and five.
- 28:56Speaker 1: Throws for year two a as a full time I
- 28:59Speaker 1: might have a year for Hurts, so let's skip that one.
- 29:01Speaker 1: Joe Burrow second year, and he's coming off an injury,
- 29:03Speaker 1: starts with twenty touchdowns, eleven interceptions in his first nine games,
- 29:07Speaker 1: two hundred and seventy seven yards a game. Finishes the
- 29:10Speaker 1: season ten ands, and the team was five and four.
- 29:12Speaker 1: Finishes the season ten and six thirty four touchdowns, fourteen interceptions.
- 29:16Speaker 1: Lamar first five games of his second year eleven touchdowns,
- 29:19Speaker 1: five picks, two hundred and fifty four yards a game.
- 29:21Speaker 1: Throws for third thirty one hundred yards, thirty six touchdowns,
- 29:25Speaker 1: six interceptions, so twenty touchdowns to one pick down the stretch.
- 29:29Speaker 1: His second year, they start three and two, they finish
- 29:32Speaker 1: thirteen and two. Justin herbert second year, sixteen touchdowns, six interceptions,
- 29:37Speaker 1: just under two thousand yards total to start the season
- 29:40Speaker 1: over his first seven games, finishes the year throwing for
- 29:42Speaker 1: five thousand yards, thirty eight touchdowns, fifteen picks. So with
- 29:46Speaker 1: just about all of these guys, I know it bears
- 29:48Speaker 1: out for Hurts. I just instinctively pulled out the second
- 29:51Speaker 1: year of his career when his second year is a
- 29:53Speaker 1: full time starters twenty twenty two, it's a year later.
- 29:56Speaker 1: All of these guys, like mid October is when it clicks,
- 30:01Speaker 1: you know at some point, and the October.
- 30:04Speaker 3: They all had the physical ability.
- 30:06Speaker 1: It's just you got to see a certain amount of it.
- 30:08Speaker 1: So to go back to your point, like what's a
- 30:11Speaker 1: good year for Drake May, Let's keep an eye. They
- 30:14Speaker 1: go to Buffalo in Week five and we all know
- 30:16Speaker 1: that's going to be a tough game. Right after that,
- 30:20Speaker 1: they have a stretch where it's the Saints, the Titans,
- 30:24Speaker 1: and the Browns, and granted to those games are on
- 30:26Speaker 1: the road, but that's kind of in that timeline where
- 30:29Speaker 1: a lot of these year two quarterbacks have taken off.
- 30:32Speaker 1: It's a week week part of the schedule. There should
- 30:36Speaker 1: be a ton of opportunities for him to as he said,
- 30:39Speaker 1: and he said in a different context, but get some
- 30:41Speaker 1: layups in before you start shooting threes. Those three games out, Well,
- 30:46Speaker 1: that was right up your alley there. Oh, I love it. Yeah,
- 30:48Speaker 1: he knows the truth about that covers two sports for
- 30:51Speaker 1: that really does. It's a very useful take. You can't
- 30:53Speaker 1: say he's wrong because you won't say he's wrong. That's
- 30:56Speaker 1: and he was a good basketball player back in the day.
- 30:58Speaker 1: One knows what he's talking about.
- 30:59Speaker 3: You could shoot threes to that's yeah, but he got
- 31:01Speaker 3: the layups first.
- 31:02Speaker 1: That's the stretch where I'm looking for Drake Made to
- 31:05Speaker 1: really take off. Like if Drake May's going to have
- 31:07Speaker 1: the kind of ascension of some of those guys I mentioned,
- 31:09Speaker 1: there's lesser quarterbacks. I know, there's like the five best
- 31:12Speaker 1: or four of the five best quarterbacks in the league.
- 31:14Speaker 1: If he's going to have the ascension, that to me
- 31:16Speaker 1: is where it starts. So is in that run of
- 31:19Speaker 1: games and then we're you know, we're going to be
- 31:21Speaker 1: talking about you know, you'll hear my station was the Saints, Titans,
- 31:25Speaker 1: and Browns, Like, of course he's playing, Well, what did
- 31:27Speaker 1: you expect after that, you got the Falcons of have
- 31:30Speaker 1: a really good defense, the Bucks, the Jets, the Bengals
- 31:32Speaker 1: have less of defense, but like that will be the Bramer. Okay,
- 31:36Speaker 1: is he making the Falcons look like he made the
- 31:38Speaker 1: Titans look Yeah?
- 31:39Speaker 3: So I just you said it earlier. I want everybody
- 31:44Speaker 3: to keep in mind that this development is not going
- 31:46Speaker 3: to be linear. Yeah, if you're expecting him to just
- 31:49Speaker 3: continue to ascend. And this is why with some of
- 31:52Speaker 3: the reporting on what's been going on at practice when
- 31:55Speaker 3: we were able to watch practice during training camp, this
- 31:58Speaker 3: was part of my I guess scripe with the way
- 32:01Speaker 3: it was being talked about with Drake Mays because if
- 32:04Speaker 3: you were just expecting every single practice to look great,
- 32:07Speaker 3: and that was the only way you were going to
- 32:08Speaker 3: be like pleased with his training camp and your two
- 32:12Speaker 3: here was that if it was just a arrow pointed
- 32:15Speaker 3: absolutely upward to the sky every single day, better better, better, better.
- 32:19Speaker 3: I don't think that's how it worked with any of
- 32:21Speaker 3: these guys. I don't think that's how it's worked with
- 32:22Speaker 3: any quarterback in the history of the league, that every
- 32:25Speaker 3: single practice was better than the last practice. It's a
- 32:28Speaker 3: you learn from the mistakes, you take the lumps, you
- 32:31Speaker 3: figure it out, You're you're practicing, you're trying things like
- 32:35Speaker 3: that's where the guys that have ascended, And then all
- 32:38Speaker 3: of a sudden, to your point about all the stats,
- 32:41Speaker 3: it just clicks. It's the they're great.
- 32:44Speaker 1: Not game to game, but the overall trend is upwards
- 32:48Speaker 1: as we get to the end of the year.
- 32:49Speaker 3: Yeap, all right, let's move on to the second one here.
- 32:52Speaker 3: So just kind of going I could, I went almost
- 32:55Speaker 3: positioned by position with it a little bit, just some
- 32:57Speaker 3: of my lingering questions here. Number two on my list
- 33:02Speaker 3: was does Rimandre Stevenson remain the lead early down back? So,
- 33:07Speaker 3: in my mind, based off these running back roles of
- 33:10Speaker 3: what they might have here this season, Travion Henderson is
- 33:14Speaker 3: going to be stagnant. I think his role is going
- 33:16Speaker 3: to be the same all year long. I don't think
- 33:18Speaker 3: they're gonna mess with Travon Henderson's role. They're gonna say,
- 33:22Speaker 3: this is what we're gonna do with you. I think
- 33:23Speaker 3: it will probably be around twelve to fifteen touches a game,
- 33:27Speaker 3: both in the run and pass game, and that's gonna
- 33:30Speaker 3: be his role for his entire rookie season. The spot
- 33:33Speaker 3: that might change is going to be that early down
- 33:38Speaker 3: back role between Remandre and Antonio Gibson. So that is
- 33:42Speaker 3: the one that I could see some fluctuation of usage.
- 33:45Speaker 3: Whereas Henderson, I think they're just going to kind of
- 33:47Speaker 3: keep him on the status quo. With Stevenson and Gibson,
- 33:53Speaker 3: the obvious number one question is can Remandre hang on
- 33:56Speaker 3: to the football? Yeah, because I do think he's their
- 33:58Speaker 3: best first and ten from twenty five regular personnel.
- 34:02Speaker 1: You know, full back in the back ball body blowback.
- 34:04Speaker 3: He is the best early down between the tackles back
- 34:07Speaker 3: on the team. But we all know about the ball
- 34:10Speaker 3: security issues, and I don't think that Antonio Gibson is
- 34:13Speaker 3: a slouch. I think Antonio Gibson is a solid NFL
- 34:16Speaker 3: running back. The stats last year more than bear that out.
- 34:19Speaker 3: So long story short, I would just say, can Remandre
- 34:24Speaker 3: hold onto the football long enough to hold on to
- 34:26Speaker 3: his job? Like That's really what it comes down to,
- 34:28Speaker 3: because I do think Antonio Gibson is going to be
- 34:32Speaker 3: a consideration not before long. If form Andre Stevenson continues
- 34:36Speaker 3: to have ball security issues.
- 34:38Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean he's right there and he can handle
- 34:42Speaker 1: some of that stuff. Stevenson does and he's a capable
- 34:44Speaker 1: pass catcher as well, so he gives you a little
- 34:46Speaker 1: more unpredictability when he's on the field. I just think
- 34:50Speaker 1: the big thing is they need somebody reliable in that role.
- 34:52Speaker 1: You cannot use Trevon Henderson as a bell cow back.
- 34:56Speaker 1: They try to do that at Ohio State. It seriously
- 34:58Speaker 1: limited his production. It's it's more he's not a volume player.
- 35:03Speaker 1: You guys have heard me talk about this, like he's
- 35:04Speaker 1: got to be. You use him in spots, third down,
- 35:07Speaker 1: two minute things like that. So Stevenson's stepping up and
- 35:12Speaker 1: returning to what he's been and I'm with you. I
- 35:14Speaker 1: think he's a solid early down back when he holds
- 35:18Speaker 1: onto the football. And seven total fumbles over his first
- 35:21Speaker 1: three years and then seven alone last year. That's jarring
- 35:25Speaker 1: and that trend cannot continue. But if he can get
- 35:28Speaker 1: back to holding onto the football, I think him in
- 35:30Speaker 1: Henderson is a good one two punch and then Gibson
- 35:33Speaker 1: factors in there as well, and I think he can
- 35:35Speaker 1: kind of spell both when needed. You almost throw him
- 35:37Speaker 1: that Rex Burke head role. But if Stevenson's putting the
- 35:40Speaker 1: ball on the ground, it changes everything. Like to me, ideally,
- 35:44Speaker 1: Ramondre Stevenson's usage rate is probably low to mid forty percent,
- 35:49Speaker 1: Traveon Henderson is high thirty to low forty percent, and
- 35:53Speaker 1: then Antonio Gibson makes up the difference forever he makes
- 35:55Speaker 1: it up. Yeah, that's what I think that ideally it
- 35:58Speaker 1: will look like. But you can't do that, seems and
- 36:00Speaker 1: can't hold onto the football.
- 36:01Speaker 3: The comparison that I keep on going back to with
- 36:04Speaker 3: Travon Henderson as Jamier Gibbs, maybe he's not as good
- 36:07Speaker 3: as Jamiir Gibbs. I think that remains to be seen.
- 36:10Speaker 3: But just from a usage standpoint and a skill set
- 36:13Speaker 3: role standpoint, I think they're very similar in terms of
- 36:15Speaker 3: how they should be used. Jamiir Gibbs has been fifty
- 36:19Speaker 3: to fifty five percent of the snaps.
- 36:20Speaker 1: He's Detroit fifty six last year. Yeah, that's that's I
- 36:24Speaker 1: don't know that. I'd have to see what touches are.
- 36:26Speaker 3: So he was his rookie year. I want to say
- 36:29Speaker 3: he averaged somewhere around fifteen or sixteen touches.
- 36:31Speaker 1: Again, he had two hundred thirty four touches. He had
- 36:33Speaker 1: three hundred two touches last year. I don't think you
- 36:35Speaker 1: can give Trayvon Henderson.
- 36:36Speaker 3: But that's also we're also talking about years down the line.
- 36:39Speaker 3: You know, Jamier Gibbs established himself.
- 36:41Speaker 1: I think that this is just kind of who Travon
- 36:45Speaker 1: Henderson is.
- 36:46Speaker 3: I think there's a chance that they can get there eventually.
- 36:49Speaker 3: For Travon Henderson, I just wouldn't do that to him
- 36:51Speaker 3: as a rookie. But it's different, Like, Jamiir Gibbs is
- 36:54Speaker 3: an established star in the league, so now obviously the
- 36:56Speaker 3: Lions are featuring him more out of the backfield as
- 36:59Speaker 3: a rookie. That wasn't as sssarily the case right out
- 37:01Speaker 3: of the gate, so they used deminted things. He's always
- 37:04Speaker 3: been right around fourteen fifteen, sixteen touches a game, Yeah,
- 37:07Speaker 3: and his impact is so big still because he's so
- 37:11Speaker 3: explosive and because he's so dynamic with the ball in
- 37:14Speaker 3: his hands that even though he doesn't play the entire game,
- 37:17Speaker 3: it still doesn't feel like you watch the Lions and
- 37:20Speaker 3: you're like, where's Jamir Gibbs been? Right, it's a massive
- 37:22Speaker 3: impact player, right, so I think you can still have
- 37:25Speaker 3: a massive impact.
- 37:26Speaker 1: Also side note, I just pulled up touches per year
- 37:29Speaker 1: twenty fourteen. Dude, is how much the game has changed.
- 37:32Speaker 1: So last year, Saquon Barkley led the league three hundred
- 37:35Speaker 1: seventy eight touches, which was forty more than the previous season.
- 37:38Speaker 1: You go back just ten years, twenty fourteen to Marco
- 37:40Speaker 1: Murray had four hundred and fifty touches. I remember that
- 37:43Speaker 1: the Dallas covers go could you I don't know if
- 37:45Speaker 1: that's possible current NFY.
- 37:47Speaker 3: I remember DeMarco Murray was talk about fantasy DeMarco Murray
- 37:52Speaker 3: was the fantasy bat because of the volume that he
- 37:55Speaker 3: was getting. It was insane.
- 37:56Speaker 1: Eighteen hundred yards on the ground, another four hundred three
- 38:00Speaker 1: the air. Third that's dude, he had a So that
- 38:04Speaker 1: had been a that was a well earned offseason by
- 38:07Speaker 1: DeMarco Murray four hundred forty nine, Larry Johnson four hundred
- 38:11Speaker 1: and fifty seven going back to six, but that was
- 38:13Speaker 1: a different game.
- 38:14Speaker 3: So Jamiir Gibbs his rookie season, just to end this point,
- 38:17Speaker 3: he averaged twelve attempts rushing attempts and three and a
- 38:21Speaker 3: half catches per game, So right around sixteen touches per game.
- 38:25Speaker 3: The attempts, the rushing attempt seems a little high for
- 38:29Speaker 3: Travon Henderson. I think that's maybe a little bit too many,
- 38:33Speaker 3: but that feels about right. I would say, you know,
- 38:36Speaker 3: twelve to fifteen touches a game, most of them playing
- 38:40Speaker 3: in the subgame, you know, subpass game and getting the
- 38:43Speaker 3: ball to him in space and trying to limit the
- 38:45Speaker 3: between the tackles running and the body blows that he
- 38:47Speaker 3: takes from doing that. I think that's about right, and
- 38:50Speaker 3: I would expect that to stay stagnant, whereas this the
- 38:54Speaker 3: lead role, you know, the early down role is going
- 38:57Speaker 3: to change. I think if Vermondri's even scann hang onto
- 39:00Speaker 3: the ball, it's definitely going to change. I don't think
- 39:02Speaker 3: that this coaching staff is going to ride, ride or
- 39:05Speaker 3: die with Mandre. I think they like Antonio Gibson. I
- 39:08Speaker 3: think Antonio Gibson's a capable running back to step in
- 39:10Speaker 3: if they feel like they need to go that direction.
- 39:12Speaker 3: So Remandre is a little bit un notice there, all right,
- 39:15Speaker 3: next one here on my list, and then we'll get
- 39:17Speaker 3: to one of yours. What version of Stefan Diggs or
- 39:21Speaker 3: the Patriots getting Because this has been another one of
- 39:25Speaker 3: those that's been a very hot button topic this summer.
- 39:29Speaker 3: The beauty has been in the eye of the beholder.
- 39:30Speaker 3: With Stefan Diggs, it feels like everybody has a little
- 39:33Speaker 3: bit of a different take on how his training camp
- 39:35Speaker 3: went and how he looked in practice. I have been
- 39:39Speaker 3: box checked with Stefan Diggs all summer long. I think
- 39:42Speaker 3: he's looked exactly how I expected him to look. I
- 39:44Speaker 3: think he looks like he still has explosiveness. I think
- 39:47Speaker 3: he looks like he can still get open at this
- 39:49Speaker 3: level in this league, at his age and coming off
- 39:52Speaker 3: the injury. I have a very few concerns honestly about
- 39:56Speaker 3: Diggs on the field and what he's shown me in
- 39:58Speaker 3: training camp, But I'm a not necessarily in the majority
- 40:02Speaker 3: of there. I think a lot of other people feel differently.
- 40:04Speaker 3: So how do you feel about Stefan Diggs and what
- 40:06Speaker 3: version of Stefan Digs the Patriots are getting.
- 40:08Speaker 1: I'm encouraged, you know, It's it's a much different setting
- 40:11Speaker 1: once you get into these games. But physically he looks
- 40:15Speaker 1: at better than you could expect given you know where
- 40:18Speaker 1: he's at coming off the injury. It's just a matter
- 40:21Speaker 1: of does that translate into games and once he starts
- 40:23Speaker 1: getting hit, you know, can he maintain? And it is
- 40:27Speaker 1: he going to start strong and fall off, But I
- 40:31Speaker 1: I didn't you know, when they sign him, I didn't
- 40:33Speaker 1: think he was gonna play week one. I thought he's
- 40:34Speaker 1: gonna open the sea'son pp and I didn't think we're
- 40:36Speaker 1: gonna see him camp or anything like that. And I
- 40:38Speaker 1: thought this question would be what happens when they get
- 40:40Speaker 1: Digs back. So he's not gonna be like prime Digs
- 40:44Speaker 1: like he was in Buffalo, but I still think he
- 40:46Speaker 1: can be. I still think he'd be a thousand yard receiver.
- 40:47Speaker 1: It's gonna look a little different. We've talked about this.
- 40:49Speaker 1: It's more of a chain move than a big play
- 40:51Speaker 1: threat at this point, but I'm I'm excited to see
- 40:55Speaker 1: what he can give him.
- 40:56Speaker 3: Eye test wise, I think he's passed during training camp,
- 40:59Speaker 3: and I just I see a guy that still definitely
- 41:02Speaker 3: has some juice in his legs and still looks explosive
- 41:05Speaker 3: and looks sharp coming out of cuts. So I really
- 41:08Speaker 3: have been pretty optimistic about what I've seen from Digs.
- 41:12Speaker 3: And I think part of my optimism too, stems from
- 41:15Speaker 3: the fact that Josh McDaniels is really really good at
- 41:19Speaker 3: getting receivers like Stefan Diggs open off the line of
- 41:22Speaker 3: scrimmage and finding different ways, whether it's between alignment, formation's motion,
- 41:29Speaker 3: stack spunches, things like that, that Steffan Diggs is just
- 41:33Speaker 3: going to get to the top of these routes and
- 41:35Speaker 3: he's gonna have a two way go where he can
- 41:37Speaker 3: break in or break out to get open. There's gonna
- 41:39Speaker 3: be a pocket of space there for him, and I
- 41:41Speaker 3: just have a lot of confidence still that he can
- 41:44Speaker 3: do that at a very high level. I don't think
- 41:46Speaker 3: they're going to be asking Steffan Diggs too much to
- 41:49Speaker 3: be the backside receiver in a three by one and
- 41:52Speaker 3: just run by somebody on the outside. I don't. I
- 41:54Speaker 3: think they realize that he is more of that chain mover,
- 41:58Speaker 3: more of that flanker zero now where they are going
- 42:01Speaker 3: to move him around. And I think that combination of
- 42:04Speaker 3: McDaniel's combining some of the scheme tools that they can
- 42:08Speaker 3: use to get him open, and then Digs just savvy
- 42:11Speaker 3: and veteran savvy with his route running is a really
- 42:15Speaker 3: nice blend between coordinator and play caller and receiver. So
- 42:19Speaker 3: as long as Devon Diggs still has the juice and
- 42:23Speaker 3: is going to be one hundred percent healthy coming off
- 42:25Speaker 3: this knee injury. I don't really see any reason for
- 42:28Speaker 3: this not to work out. So I've heard a lot
- 42:31Speaker 3: of different things about digs and how he hasn't necessarily
- 42:35Speaker 3: put up a ton of practice production, you know, and
- 42:38Speaker 3: team drills and things like that, But just watching him
- 42:41Speaker 3: move and watching him practice, I feel like he is
- 42:44Speaker 3: more than past my eye test of what I expected
- 42:48Speaker 3: him to look like. And we'll see if it ends
- 42:51Speaker 3: up translating, but I'm pretty optimistic that it's going to
- 42:53Speaker 3: end up translating. So before we continue our list, here
- 42:57Speaker 3: brunt work where it makes work boots and apparel that
- 42:59Speaker 3: are built for the job site and as an official
- 43:01Speaker 3: sponsor of the New England Patriots and let Stadium field Crew.
- 43:05Speaker 3: Their gear is comfortable, durable, and named after the real
- 43:07Speaker 3: workers and the trades that help design it. You can
- 43:10Speaker 3: even try a brunt out on the job and if
- 43:11Speaker 3: it doesn't blow you away, they let you send it back.
- 43:14Speaker 3: Save ten dollars on your first order at brontworkwear dot
- 43:17Speaker 3: com slash Pats or with coupon code Pats Alex. Why
- 43:20Speaker 3: don't you get to your rookie thing now? And then
- 43:22Speaker 3: we'll continue the list here.
- 43:24Speaker 1: So this is kind of my big picture question for
- 43:27Speaker 1: the team going Drake May is obviously the big one,
- 43:29Speaker 1: right where's Drake May at the other big one? I
- 43:31Speaker 1: wrote a column about this on ninety eight five the
- 43:33Speaker 1: sports sub dot com this morning. You can check it out.
- 43:36Speaker 1: Is Look, it's not a hot take to say the
- 43:39Speaker 1: Patriots need to have a better draft class this year
- 43:41Speaker 1: and they've had. I get like, choker, Wow, the Patriots
- 43:44Speaker 1: need a draft better good take part. It's a little
- 43:47Speaker 1: different than that they can't better. It's not like, all right,
- 43:52Speaker 1: you know, they need some of these guys to hit
- 43:54Speaker 1: and build depth. Then there's some developmental players and we'll
- 43:57Speaker 1: see down the road. That's not what this is. That's
- 43:59Speaker 1: what it's been in past years. That's not what this
- 44:02Speaker 1: year is. They need a lot of these guys to hit,
- 44:04Speaker 1: and they need them to hit right away. I count
- 44:07Speaker 1: six rookies that are either going to start or be
- 44:11Speaker 1: in a heavy rotational role right away. There's not a
- 44:14Speaker 1: lot of plan and B like depth options behind most
- 44:17Speaker 1: of them. And then there's two more guys that probably
- 44:21Speaker 1: aren't in that position right away, but could get to
- 44:24Speaker 1: that situation relatively quickly. So just to go through the
- 44:26Speaker 1: list will Campbell, and look, will Campbell's fourth overall pick.
- 44:30Speaker 1: No matter the situation of the roster of the team,
- 44:32Speaker 1: the fourth overall pick, especially to premium position, that guy
- 44:35Speaker 1: should be starting. So this one's not at a character.
- 44:38Speaker 1: But what are the options behind Will Campbell if he
- 44:41Speaker 1: doesn't work out or if he gets hurt, we'll get
- 44:45Speaker 1: to it. There's some, but there's not a lot. But
- 44:47Speaker 1: Will Campbell boom right there? Trayvon Henderson, we just talked
- 44:50Speaker 1: about him. Is he their main big play threat on offense?
- 44:54Speaker 1: I mean, I think Pop can give him a little
- 44:55Speaker 1: bit of that, maybe digs, but he's their best big
- 44:58Speaker 1: play threat on offense. They have some other that can
- 45:00Speaker 1: help them kind of march their way down the field,
- 45:02Speaker 1: but that big play attack he's there. He's the guy.
- 45:04Speaker 3: He's their matchup weapon, like he's their biggest mismatch.
- 45:07Speaker 1: It looks a lot different offensively off Trevon Henderson does
- 45:10Speaker 1: not pan out, So that's two. Jared Wilson. All indications
- 45:13Speaker 1: are he's gonna be the starting left card and if
- 45:16Speaker 1: it's not, and he might end up playing at center
- 45:18Speaker 1: if Garret Bradbury continues to struggle, they have Ben Brown
- 45:21Speaker 1: behind him. That's kind of it. Cayden Wallas is a
- 45:24Speaker 1: converted tackle. He's mainly played on the right side, So
- 45:27Speaker 1: especially if Bradbury continues to struggle, Wilson has to work out.
- 45:31Speaker 1: Not much you can do if he doesn't. Craig Woodson,
- 45:34Speaker 1: now with your Bill Peppers trade, he's your starting strong
- 45:36Speaker 1: safety and he's gonna play a lot. He's gonna play
- 45:39Speaker 1: in the box, and he's gonna help play the run.
- 45:41Speaker 1: He's gonna help cover tight ends. Those are two things
- 45:42Speaker 1: they struggled with this summer. And then obviously have Andy
- 45:45Speaker 1: Burgallis is your starting kicker. There's no plan be there.
- 45:48Speaker 3: Uh, park talk about the kickers.
- 45:49Speaker 1: Parker Romo not here anymore.
- 45:51Speaker 3: You not know Julian Ashby Love, You're gonna get the drum.
- 45:53Speaker 1: And I'm just going in the order of the draft
- 45:54Speaker 1: to the drafts. And then Julian Ashby the same thing.
- 45:56Speaker 1: He's a starting a long snapper. There's nobody else here.
- 45:58Speaker 1: And in a team they have the they are tied
- 46:02Speaker 1: for the most one possession losses in the last two years,
- 46:07Speaker 1: and I believe they have the seventh worst winning percentage
- 46:10Speaker 1: in those games. You want to get better, it starts
- 46:12Speaker 1: being better in one position games that a lot of
- 46:15Speaker 1: that is special teams, right, you miss a field goal
- 46:18Speaker 1: that can swing it, and you can miss the field
- 46:19Speaker 1: goal because of a bad kick. You can miss a
- 46:21Speaker 1: field goal because of a bad snap. If they're going
- 46:23Speaker 1: to get better, it starts with getting better at one
- 46:24Speaker 1: possession games. You're gonna be better at one possesion games.
- 46:27Speaker 1: It means being better in the kicking game. So those
- 46:29Speaker 1: two guys are in a key spot as well. So
- 46:30Speaker 1: that's Campbell, Henderson, Wilson Woodson, Borgalis Ashby who are either
- 46:34Speaker 1: starting or if not starting, because I think the concept
- 46:37Speaker 1: of a starting running back unless you're Derek Henry, doesn't
- 46:39Speaker 1: really mean anything in heavy rotational roles. Then you have
- 46:43Speaker 1: Kyle Williams, who it looks like they're base eleven to
- 46:47Speaker 1: start the season, is going to be booty digs and
- 46:49Speaker 1: Pop mac hollins is going to mix in there as well.
- 46:52Speaker 1: So it's a little tougher to tell exactly where Kyle
- 46:54Speaker 1: Williams sits in that in that depth chart just because
- 46:57Speaker 1: and using the not the unofficial depth like really what
- 47:00Speaker 1: they're doing, right, He missed the last two weeks of
- 47:03Speaker 1: camp because he got hurt in the Minnesota game, so
- 47:05Speaker 1: it's tougher to tell, but they're gonna need his speed.
- 47:08Speaker 1: They're gonna need a speed, They're gonna need his ability
- 47:09Speaker 1: after the catch. He is going to work his way
- 47:12Speaker 1: to that rotation at some point during the year. And injuries.
- 47:14Speaker 1: You know, Pop Douglas has had some troubles staying on
- 47:17Speaker 1: the field. Diggs is coming off the ACL. Those are
- 47:19Speaker 1: probably the two guys who were chiefly in front of them.
- 47:21Speaker 1: They're gonna need Kyle Williams play meaningful stamps for them
- 47:24Speaker 1: at some point this year. And then the other guy
- 47:26Speaker 1: is Marcus Bryant. Marcus Bryant ideally plays no snaps this
- 47:30Speaker 1: year because he's the third tackle and you want your
- 47:32Speaker 1: starters to start. Do you know how many tackles played
- 47:35Speaker 1: all seventeen games in the NFL last year?
- 47:37Speaker 3: Not many?
- 47:37Speaker 1: I bet seventeen. And of those seventeen, there's only two
- 47:42Speaker 1: sets of teammates. The Saints had both starting tackles play
- 47:46Speaker 1: all seventeen games in the Packers had both starting tackles
- 47:49Speaker 1: play all seventeen games. That's it. So odds are Marcus
- 47:52Speaker 1: Bryant's gonna have to play at some point and he's
- 47:54Speaker 1: gonna have to start at some point. He's clearly the
- 47:57Speaker 1: top backup right tackle behind Morgan Moses. Left tackle. They
- 48:00Speaker 1: do still have Darien Lowe, but I wonder, Evan, just
- 48:04Speaker 1: given the way this coaching staff has approached players they inherited,
- 48:07Speaker 1: if Marcus Bryant will get the first crack at that
- 48:09Speaker 1: if Will Campbell gets hurt, now maybe he has, you know,
- 48:12Speaker 1: a shorter leash at left tackle then he does on
- 48:14Speaker 1: the right side with her Darien Lowe still there. But
- 48:17Speaker 1: odds are he's gonna Marcus Bryant's probably gonna start a
- 48:20Speaker 1: game or two at least for this team at some
- 48:21Speaker 1: point this season especially. That's just what history tells us
- 48:25Speaker 1: the way again, seventeen, that's it. That's both sides. Seventeen
- 48:29Speaker 1: of sixty four tackles last year started all seventeen games.
- 48:32Speaker 1: So you're gonna probably see him at some point. So
- 48:35Speaker 1: that's six rookies starting or an impact roles right away.
- 48:39Speaker 1: Kyle Williams will be in one, should be in one
- 48:41Speaker 1: at some point. You hope Marcus Bryant's not, but odds
- 48:45Speaker 1: are he will be. This is not hey, they're developmental players.
- 48:48Speaker 1: You know he's going to grow into this role Bill
- 48:51Speaker 1: Belichick used to ease the rookies in, there's a veteran
- 48:54Speaker 1: there alongside him as either plan A or a solid
- 48:56Speaker 1: play and B and okay, well if he doesn't hit
- 48:59Speaker 1: right away, we have a options and there's time. That's
- 49:02Speaker 1: when we talk about draft classes hitting in the past.
- 49:04Speaker 1: A lot of it is you look at last year's class,
- 49:07Speaker 1: Javon Baker, developmental player, that twenty twenty two class that
- 49:10Speaker 1: didn't pan out. There were developmental players there that Okay, well,
- 49:13Speaker 1: he's probably not going to make an impact a year one,
- 49:15Speaker 1: but that doesn't mean the pick isn't a hit. You know,
- 49:17Speaker 1: if he and obviously a lot of these guys didn't,
- 49:19Speaker 1: but comes along in year two, year three, he's going
- 49:22Speaker 1: to replace this veteran that's on the roster. And that
- 49:24Speaker 1: was the plan. You're drafting a guy year two early,
- 49:27Speaker 1: and that can be a successful draft in some context. Now,
- 49:30Speaker 1: this isn't totally uncommon for a team that's churning, like
- 49:33Speaker 1: turning over their roster as much as the Patriots have,
- 49:35Speaker 1: but this is where they're at. These are not developmental players.
- 49:38Speaker 1: These are guys that if the Patriots are going to
- 49:40Speaker 1: be you know, really make a playoff push. The majority
- 49:43Speaker 1: of these guys, if not all, have to hit right away.
- 49:44Speaker 1: It's obviously not binary, it's not all or none. But
- 49:47Speaker 1: they're going to need a lot of these guys to
- 49:49Speaker 1: be starting caliber players as rookies. Sorry, that's the whole rank.
- 49:52Speaker 3: No, that's fine. It was a good rant. I think
- 49:54Speaker 3: the biggest thing that you just mentioned there at the
- 49:57Speaker 3: end that stands out to me is starting caliber. It's
- 49:59Speaker 3: one thing to be playing right, it's another thing to
- 50:01Speaker 3: be playing well. And I think that's what we've seen
- 50:03Speaker 3: in these last couple of draft classes, is that guys
- 50:06Speaker 3: have maybe been playing because the depth on the roster
- 50:09Speaker 3: didn't allow them time to not play and develop in
- 50:13Speaker 3: the behind the scenes. Like maybe they didn't win at
- 50:15Speaker 3: the height of the dynasty when they just had droves
- 50:17Speaker 3: of depth. For example, last year, Laden Robinson, he was playing,
- 50:22Speaker 3: Was he playing well? But I would even say that
- 50:25Speaker 3: last year's draft, like the jam Bulk was playing, But
- 50:28Speaker 3: was he? Was he good?
- 50:29Speaker 1: But they had it and maybe they obviously weren't great,
- 50:33Speaker 1: but they had playing b's for some of those guys.
- 50:35Speaker 1: They had Kendrick Bourne coming off i R. They had
- 50:38Speaker 1: kJ Osborne who didn't work out, but was a veteran
- 50:40Speaker 1: who had you know, played in the league.
- 50:44Speaker 3: To me, isn't like Booty and Mac Collins like those guys.
- 50:46Speaker 1: So at wide receiver. Sure, And that's why I didn't
- 50:48Speaker 1: include Kyle Williams on my list of the six reel
- 50:50Speaker 1: impact guys. Who is the Kendrick Bourne coming off I
- 50:54Speaker 1: or to rescue the team of big play threats on offense?
- 50:58Speaker 1: Or Trevon Henderson who is the Hendrick Bourne at left guard?
- 51:02Speaker 1: If it doesn't work out for Jared Wilson, that's fair there,
- 51:05Speaker 1: And like you can say it might be Ben Brown there,
- 51:08Speaker 1: but okay, what if Garrett Bradbury doesn't work at center?
- 51:10Speaker 3: Well we'll get to that.
- 51:11Speaker 1: But I see Kendrick Bourne, I guess that would be.
- 51:13Speaker 3: Co Yeah, And I think we're on in the same
- 51:18Speaker 3: the same spot with it, Like they don't they need
- 51:21Speaker 3: these rookies to be good. Like it's not that they can't.
- 51:24Speaker 3: They can't just be out there, they can't just be
- 51:25Speaker 3: taken out space. They need to actually play and play well.
- 51:29Speaker 1: And it's it's different than your average, But the point
- 51:31Speaker 1: is it's every year you want your rookies to be good.
- 51:34Speaker 1: But most years, most teams and again this is not
- 51:38Speaker 1: unique to the Patriots. This is not something that's unprecedented.
- 51:41Speaker 1: But most years, most teams, Okay, well, if this guy
- 51:45Speaker 1: isn't great from the beginning, we have other veterans we
- 51:48Speaker 1: can put in there, or we can, you know, kind
- 51:50Speaker 1: of cover him or whatever we can. He there's more
- 51:53Speaker 1: time from development. If he doesn't really hit that stride
- 51:56Speaker 1: in a year two, it's okay. He can still be
- 51:58Speaker 1: his success. We can still be successful as a team
- 52:01Speaker 1: this year without him. Can the Patriots still be successful
- 52:04Speaker 1: without these guys being good players?
- 52:06Speaker 3: I would say no to Campbell and Henderson. Those two guys, though,
- 52:11Speaker 3: were drafted in the top forty and they should be
- 52:13Speaker 3: immediate impact players. I guess in hindsight now that Jabrill
- 52:17Speaker 3: Peppers has gone, Craig Woodson has a lot on his plate.
- 52:20Speaker 3: But at the same time, you could still go back
- 52:22Speaker 3: to Kyle Duggart and he's still here. Jared Wilson is
- 52:26Speaker 3: another one that probably is in a similar boat as
- 52:29Speaker 3: Henderson and Campbell, because it's Ben Brown, it's Kaden Wallace,
- 52:33Speaker 3: like those are their backups right now, and you would
- 52:35Speaker 3: like to think that Jared Wilson is better than those
- 52:38Speaker 3: two guys, and.
- 52:38Speaker 1: Then the kicker and the long snapper. Of course, those guys,
- 52:41Speaker 1: they just have to be good like there's no consider
- 52:43Speaker 1: there's nobody walking through the door. So yes, two special
- 52:46Speaker 1: teams players. Six sounds like a dramatic number. Two special
- 52:49Speaker 1: teams players kind of dress it up, but it is fair.
- 52:52Speaker 1: The rookies don't have to hit. They have to hit
- 52:54Speaker 1: right away, and they have.
- 52:55Speaker 3: To play like they have to be good like again,
- 52:57Speaker 3: I think a lot of the times two things happen. One,
- 53:00Speaker 3: they keep the majority of the draft class on the
- 53:02Speaker 3: roster and everybody it's like, oh, good, good draft class.
- 53:05Speaker 3: They everybody made the team like that, that's not the bar.
- 53:08Speaker 3: And the other thing is, oh, the rookies are playing okay,
- 53:13Speaker 3: but how are they playing right like? It's again, it's
- 53:16Speaker 3: one thing to just play. You can play guys like
- 53:19Speaker 3: Polk played, Leiden Robinson played, obviously Drake played like guys
- 53:23Speaker 3: played last year from the rookie class. And now a
- 53:26Speaker 3: year later, how do we feel about the twenty twenty
- 53:28Speaker 3: five rookie class or twenty twenty four excuse me, outside
- 53:31Speaker 3: of the quarterback, not very good. So they have to
- 53:34Speaker 3: play it and they have to pan out and that's
- 53:37Speaker 3: a big part of this whole thing right now for
- 53:39Speaker 3: Mike Rabel, and not to change gears here at all,
- 53:42Speaker 3: but he was asked on your rival station on the
- 53:46Speaker 3: EI about the Micah Parsons trade and whether or not
- 53:50Speaker 3: the Patriots were in the Micah Parsons sweepstakes, and Rabel
- 53:53Speaker 3: brought it up. He said, we need, we need to
- 53:55Speaker 3: We need draft picks, like we need to hit on
- 53:57Speaker 3: these draft picks. We need to develop talent. We need
- 54:00Speaker 3: high first round picks. We need depth on this roster,
- 54:04Speaker 3: and we're not in a position yet to be giving
- 54:06Speaker 3: away draft picks. That's a really big part of this
- 54:09Speaker 3: entire thing. It's probably the biggest part, frankly, of the
- 54:12Speaker 3: entire thing and this whole thing working is can they
- 54:16Speaker 3: start drafting and developing their own players again? Can they
- 54:19Speaker 3: have homegrown talent where every two or three years they
- 54:22Speaker 3: don't have to dip back into free agency and spend
- 54:24Speaker 3: three hundred million dollars on day one of free agency
- 54:27Speaker 3: to replenish the top of the roster because they missed
- 54:31Speaker 3: on a bunch of draft picks. They can't keep having
- 54:33Speaker 3: that happen. They got to have homegrown talent. They got
- 54:36Speaker 3: to develop homegrown talent. Now my next one here on
- 54:40Speaker 3: the offensive line. He brought up the rookie offensive lineman
- 54:42Speaker 3: on the left side. I think that gets a lot
- 54:44Speaker 3: of talk, and rightfully so. I'm actually maybe a little
- 54:49Speaker 3: bit more optimistic about that too, because maybe it's just
- 54:53Speaker 3: who they're replacing in the bar being so low of
- 54:55Speaker 3: them being better than what they've had at left tackle
- 54:58Speaker 3: and left guard over the last couple of years. But
- 55:01Speaker 3: at the same time, I would much rather take the
- 55:04Speaker 3: talent that Will Campbell and Jared Wilson are bringing to
- 55:07Speaker 3: the table and live with some of the rookie growing
- 55:10Speaker 3: pains that are inevitable than what they've had the last
- 55:13Speaker 3: couple of years. I'd much rather take their arc of
- 55:16Speaker 3: development versus Vederian Loewe and Laden Robinson's. I think they're
- 55:21Speaker 3: just so significantly better than the guys that they're replacing
- 55:24Speaker 3: just from a talent standpoint. I'm not saying it's going
- 55:26Speaker 3: to be perfect. Just from a talent standpoint that I'm
- 55:29Speaker 3: willing to give them some grace and let that go.
- 55:32Speaker 3: The one thing that I would be concerned about right
- 55:34Speaker 3: now on the offensive line is center. I think Garrett Bradbury.
- 55:39Speaker 3: In my question with Garrett Bradbury is does Garrett Bradbury
- 55:44Speaker 3: maintain the starting center job, but can he hold on
- 55:46Speaker 3: to that job for the duration of the season, of course,
- 55:50Speaker 3: taking injuries out of this, right, does Garrett Bradbury survive
- 55:54Speaker 3: the season at center? Because if he doesn't, and he's
- 55:59Speaker 3: a liability to the point where they have to replace
- 56:01Speaker 3: Garrett Bradbury at center, We've been down this road before
- 56:05Speaker 3: where that becomes a house of cards. Like now all
- 56:07Speaker 3: of a sudden, you're moving people around, You're putting Ben
- 56:10Speaker 3: Brown in the starting lineup, or you're kicking Jared Wilson
- 56:13Speaker 3: over a spot to center after he's been playing left
- 56:15Speaker 3: guard for eight weeks, and you're doing this whole thing
- 56:18Speaker 3: that they often got in trouble with, for example with
- 56:21Speaker 3: Mike on Winnu, where there it was inside outside, inside outside.
- 56:24Speaker 3: You would love health permitted to just put Jared Wilson
- 56:28Speaker 3: and Will Campbell on the left side and leave him
- 56:30Speaker 3: there for seventeen weeks and not mess with those two guys.
- 56:33Speaker 3: But if Garrett Bradbury can't hold up at center, then
- 56:36Speaker 3: it creates this potential house of cards or shuffle where
- 56:40Speaker 3: now everybody's starting to kind of move around there on
- 56:42Speaker 3: the interior. So where's your faith right now? Like, where's
- 56:46Speaker 3: your level of concern with Garrett Bradbury.
- 56:49Speaker 1: I mean, he's gonna be the guy. You know, we
- 56:52Speaker 1: talked about this. They're past the point where they can
- 56:54Speaker 1: switch it. It's tied into Jared Wilson. If if Jared
- 56:58Speaker 1: Wilson's solid and you can just plug Ben Brown in there,
- 57:02Speaker 1: I think Ben Brown's a capable starting center. Like I
- 57:05Speaker 1: guess the faith in Bradbury is. I'm not convinced he's
- 57:08Speaker 1: going to be their starting center for seventeen games, even
- 57:10Speaker 1: injury aside. If Jared Wilson slid, you can plug Ben
- 57:14Speaker 1: Brown and then he gives you more or less what
- 57:15Speaker 1: he gave you last year. I think they'll be fine.
- 57:17Speaker 1: If you're also worried about left guard, it gets a
- 57:20Speaker 1: lot trickier. And now maybe you're more hesitant to Paul
- 57:23Speaker 1: Garrett Bradbury because who do you want to You know,
- 57:26Speaker 1: now you decide who do you basically leave out there
- 57:28Speaker 1: to struggle. Do you put the rookie out there and risk,
- 57:30Speaker 1: you know, upsetting his confidence for the long term, or
- 57:34Speaker 1: do you leave the veteran out there, even if he's
- 57:36Speaker 1: maybe a slightly worse player. So if Jared Wilson hits,
- 57:40Speaker 1: I feel good about their their center position even if
- 57:42Speaker 1: he's not there. But I Bradbury, somebody will be keeping
- 57:46Speaker 1: an eye on early, Like I don't feel like he
- 57:48Speaker 1: has a strong stronghold on that job.
- 57:50Speaker 3: No, no, do I. And it just goes back to
- 57:54Speaker 3: like a Skarnak thing where a continuity on the offensive
- 57:58Speaker 3: line is so important and it might not be your
- 58:00Speaker 3: most talented five players on paper that end up being
- 58:04Speaker 3: your best five on the offensive line, But if they
- 58:06Speaker 3: can play on a string, and if they can play
- 58:08Speaker 3: together and they have that continuity and they're seeing it
- 58:11Speaker 3: through the same set of eyes, like that can trump
- 58:15Speaker 3: talent at that position because it's a five man unit
- 58:19Speaker 3: versus one, you know, individual player. So there might be
- 58:22Speaker 3: a case to be made that Ben Brown is better
- 58:26Speaker 3: than Garrett Bradbury anyways, just individually, he's just a better player.
- 58:30Speaker 3: But I think the better case would probably be that
- 58:33Speaker 3: maybe Ben Brown is just better suited to be the
- 58:36Speaker 3: center in the current real time you know, current time here.
- 58:41Speaker 3: So we'll see what ends up happening with Bradbury. There's
- 58:45Speaker 3: some optimism about his run blocking based off the preseason,
- 58:49Speaker 3: but we all know that play strength and holding up
- 58:51Speaker 3: against bigger bodies on the interior is going to be
- 58:54Speaker 3: the number one question. Is he getting walk back into
- 58:56Speaker 3: the quarterback? Is he able to dig out and move
- 58:58Speaker 3: nose tackles like that. That's really where it starts an
- 59:01Speaker 3: end with Kerrett Bradberry. So we'll see if he ends
- 59:04Speaker 3: up holding down the position. Ben Browns had a nice summer,
- 59:07Speaker 3: so maybe you can be a little bit optimistic about
- 59:09Speaker 3: what he could bring to the table. But if I
- 59:11Speaker 3: had to say my biggest concern on the offensive line,
- 59:15Speaker 3: it's not the rookie left side, it's center. I really
- 59:18Speaker 3: feel like the rookie left side is gonna do its thing.
- 59:21Speaker 3: It's gonna have some highs, it's gonna have some lows.
- 59:23Speaker 3: But overall, over the course of seventeen games, assuming those
- 59:26Speaker 3: two guys stay healthy, it's gonna be better. It's gonna
- 59:29Speaker 3: be improved from what they have. And that's the baseline
- 59:32Speaker 3: for right now. Center. I don't know if it's gonna
- 59:34Speaker 3: be better than last year, and that's gonna be a
- 59:36Speaker 3: big question mark for the team. All right, let's move
- 59:39Speaker 3: over to the defense. We probably should go a little
- 59:41Speaker 3: bit faster than we've been going, honestly, But let's move
- 59:43Speaker 3: over to the defense here. I have a couple of
- 59:46Speaker 3: defense more health related type things. I think this storyline
- 59:50Speaker 3: Alex and we brought it up yesterday on Patriots Unfiltered,
- 59:53Speaker 3: and maybe kind of feel even stronger about it. Christian
- 59:57Speaker 3: Barmore and his health status, his ability. I would say,
- 1:00:03Speaker 3: less so to be out there, but more so to
- 1:00:05Speaker 3: be fully locked in Christian Barmore and be able to
- 1:00:09Speaker 3: give them seventy five eighty percent of the snaps and
- 1:00:12Speaker 3: play that much and play it at a high level
- 1:00:15Speaker 3: like we know he's capable of doing from earlier on
- 1:00:18Speaker 3: in his career before the blood colts popped up. He
- 1:00:21Speaker 3: has been sneakily on a pitch count all summer long
- 1:00:23Speaker 3: in practice where some practices he's participating in full and
- 1:00:27Speaker 3: some he is not. I don't because of what's been
- 1:00:30Speaker 3: going on with Gonzales and then obviously all of the
- 1:00:32Speaker 3: question marks on the offensive side of the ball. I
- 1:00:34Speaker 3: feel like this has flown under the radar with Christian Barmore,
- 1:00:37Speaker 3: that are they going to get a fully healthy, full
- 1:00:41Speaker 3: go Christian Barmore come Week one against the Las Vegas Raiders.
- 1:00:45Speaker 3: I think still remains to be seen a little bit.
- 1:00:48Speaker 1: I think he looks right when he's out there. I
- 1:00:51Speaker 1: think you're going to get a fully healthy Christian Barmore.
- 1:00:53Speaker 1: The question is how much of him do you get?
- 1:00:55Speaker 1: To your point about the pitch count? Is he out there?
- 1:00:58Speaker 1: I'm trying to remember what his snap percent which was
- 1:01:00Speaker 1: his last fully healthy season. Obviously last year you kind
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: of throw that out. Good for him getting back, but
- 1:01:06Speaker 1: he was he was managed that whole time. So he
- 1:01:07Speaker 1: played sixty six percent of snaps in twenty twenty three,
- 1:01:10Speaker 1: which was a career high. Do you get him forty
- 1:01:13Speaker 1: percent of the time, fifty percent of the time, sixty
- 1:01:15Speaker 1: percent of the time. Like I think, when he's out there,
- 1:01:17Speaker 1: he's gonna be really good, because he looked really good
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: this summer when he was out there. I'm not super
- 1:01:22Speaker 1: worried about that thing. It's more just does the pitch
- 1:01:26Speaker 1: count continue into regular season games?
- 1:01:29Speaker 3: And early on in the season, guys rotate all the time,
- 1:01:31Speaker 3: Like we're Week one, it's going to be a big rotation.
- 1:01:33Speaker 1: And you know what, one sixty six percent is pretty
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: high for an interior defensive lineman. So if he's up
- 1:01:39Speaker 1: over sixty percent. I would consider that a full go.
- 1:01:42Speaker 3: Yeah, I would wait to judge this question for about
- 1:01:45Speaker 3: a month or so, because we won. Is always a
- 1:01:47Speaker 3: heavy rotation.
- 1:01:48Speaker 1: I'd wait to judge most of these questions for a month.
- 1:01:51Speaker 3: But yeah, nobody has played a full game from start
- 1:01:55Speaker 3: to finish yet, so no one I accept. Maybe the
- 1:02:00Speaker 3: quarterback is going to play every single snap on Sunday,
- 1:02:03Speaker 3: I would say, And sometimes the offensive line, you know,
- 1:02:05Speaker 3: guys like on when Wu like he might play, you know,
- 1:02:08Speaker 3: the whole duration, Campbell Moses like, those guys might play
- 1:02:11Speaker 3: the whole way. But a lot of the times that
- 1:02:14Speaker 3: doesn't happen, even on the offensive line. So Week one
- 1:02:16Speaker 3: is always a crapshoot when it comes to that. And
- 1:02:19Speaker 3: then Week two is going to be one hundred and
- 1:02:20Speaker 3: ten degrees in Miami, so there's gonna be another rotation there,
- 1:02:24Speaker 3: whether it's conditioning wise just because it's early on in
- 1:02:27Speaker 3: the season, or weather wise being down in Miami in September,
- 1:02:31Speaker 3: that's going to be a factor as well. So when
- 1:02:33Speaker 3: you put those two things together, or at least going
- 1:02:35Speaker 3: into week three before we know fully are these guys
- 1:02:39Speaker 3: going to be full tilt as Christian barm Or one
- 1:02:41Speaker 3: hundred percent cleared and healthy, so we'll see what ends
- 1:02:45Speaker 3: up happening. But his snap count, his pitch count during
- 1:02:49Speaker 3: training camp. Again, I think, you know, other stories have
- 1:02:52Speaker 3: sort of pushed this down, Like if there was no
- 1:02:54Speaker 3: Gonzales thing, if Jabrill Peppers did not get cut on
- 1:02:58Speaker 3: a Friday afternoon after cut down day, then like these
- 1:03:02Speaker 3: things would probably be bigger stories. Diggs obviously is a
- 1:03:05Speaker 3: huge story, but Barmore's snapcount, pitch count, whatever you want
- 1:03:10Speaker 3: to call it, and just overall effectiveness. They need Christian
- 1:03:13Speaker 3: Barmore to be the twenty twenty three version of Christian Barmore,
- 1:03:17Speaker 3: the guy that played last year. All the kudos in
- 1:03:19Speaker 3: the world for him get getting back, but he would
- 1:03:22Speaker 3: be the first to admit that he was a shell
- 1:03:23Speaker 3: of himself last year. He did not look like the
- 1:03:26Speaker 3: dominant force that he can be if he's at the
- 1:03:29Speaker 3: best of his ability. Christian Barmore is a better player
- 1:03:33Speaker 3: than Milton Williams, like, Christian Barmore is their best defensive
- 1:03:35Speaker 3: lineman if he's full peak Christian Barmore like in twenty
- 1:03:38Speaker 3: twenty three. So I think it's a big part of it.
- 1:03:41Speaker 3: I think they need Christian Barmore to be his usual
- 1:03:44Speaker 3: wrecking self. So that leads us to the other big
- 1:03:47Speaker 3: injury one that is probably the story of the day
- 1:03:49Speaker 3: right now with the Patriots, and that's the status of
- 1:03:53Speaker 3: Christian Gonzalez. We will be out at practice alex in
- 1:03:56Speaker 3: a couple of hours here and we'll see whether or
- 1:03:58Speaker 3: not Christian Gonzalez is there with the rest of the team.
- 1:04:01Speaker 3: He was not out there on Monday. It's been over
- 1:04:04Speaker 3: a month now. July twenty eighth was the last time
- 1:04:06Speaker 3: he practiced for the Patriots. I know, there's your station
- 1:04:10Speaker 3: has a lot of tinfoil hat theories going on now
- 1:04:13Speaker 3: about why he hasn't been out there. You knows it.
- 1:04:15Speaker 3: Could it be contract related, all those types of things.
- 1:04:17Speaker 3: We can explain that here in a second. But overall,
- 1:04:21Speaker 3: where's your panic meter right now with Christian Gonzales.
- 1:04:23Speaker 1: So I was saying I'd go from from lowercase W
- 1:04:25Speaker 1: to upper kasew worried if he wasn't out here today.
- 1:04:28Speaker 1: Vrabel kind of sounding less optimistic about it on Monday,
- 1:04:33Speaker 1: maybe accelerated that process. He's out here today. I'm not worried,
- 1:04:36Speaker 1: Like this is the first real they've been getting ready
- 1:04:39Speaker 1: for the Raiders for a couple weeks now, but this
- 1:04:41Speaker 1: is the first real you know, getting into it game
- 1:04:46Speaker 1: week like practice. So he's out there. It's not a
- 1:04:50Speaker 1: position where and I think we talked about this with
- 1:04:52Speaker 1: Carlton Davis during camp, It's not a position where in
- 1:04:55Speaker 1: the context of the defense, Okay, he needs to be
- 1:04:57Speaker 1: out there, and he needs to be immersed in the
- 1:04:59Speaker 1: scheme and this and that. Like Rabel has said, they're
- 1:05:01Speaker 1: gonna play a lot of man coverage. It's study your opponent,
- 1:05:04Speaker 1: pick up on his route tree, his tendencies, his nuances,
- 1:05:07Speaker 1: know what he's gonna do. It's more tell me, this
- 1:05:10Speaker 1: is unfair to say Evan Corner. At least the way
- 1:05:12Speaker 1: I think they're gonna have Gonzales play is more of
- 1:05:15Speaker 1: a film room preparation position than a practice field preparation position.
- 1:05:19Speaker 1: Would you agree with out on an island by right, So, like,
- 1:05:23Speaker 1: obviously there's being in physical shape and he has run
- 1:05:26Speaker 1: with the receiver in a month, that's you'd like him
- 1:05:28Speaker 1: to get out there to kind of get that going.
- 1:05:30Speaker 1: But if he's out there today, all right, like he's
- 1:05:34Speaker 1: out there for the full week, what's essentially the full
- 1:05:36Speaker 1: week of practice. He's very talented. I'm not super worried
- 1:05:39Speaker 1: about him missing time beyond basic conditioning stuff. It's not
- 1:05:42Speaker 1: out there today, I mean the and it's a new
- 1:05:45Speaker 1: coaching staff, so we'll see how they handle things, because
- 1:05:47Speaker 1: every staff's a little different and this is something we'll
- 1:05:50Speaker 1: kind of try to pick up on over the course
- 1:05:51Speaker 1: of the season. But generally across the league, when guys
- 1:05:54Speaker 1: don't practice on Wednesday, what's the rate of those guys
- 1:05:58Speaker 1: playing unless it's a designated rest day. I think the
- 1:06:01Speaker 1: percentage is relatively low. So you want to see him
- 1:06:06Speaker 1: back out there today, But we'll see.
- 1:06:07Speaker 3: Yeah, So it's one hundred percent to me a conditioning
- 1:06:11Speaker 3: thing and not a mental locked into the game plan thing.
- 1:06:15Speaker 3: Because for a guy like Christian Gonzalez, even against the Raiders,
- 1:06:18Speaker 3: who don't necessarily really have they don't have DeVante Adams anymore,
- 1:06:22Speaker 3: right that he has like a more key matchup per
- 1:06:24Speaker 3: se on the outside. But they're gonna say to Christian Gonzalez, like,
- 1:06:28Speaker 3: you have Jacobe Myers, right, or you have Dante Thoron,
- 1:06:31Speaker 3: or you have next week, you have Hill, you have
- 1:06:33Speaker 3: Tyreek Hill, and there that all his preparation, like you mentioned,
- 1:06:38Speaker 3: comes from watching cutups of those guys run routes like that.
- 1:06:41Speaker 3: That's what it is. It's film study, it's tendencies, it's
- 1:06:44Speaker 3: all that kind of thing. You are at corner. You're
- 1:06:47Speaker 3: really on an island, Like it really is not a
- 1:06:49Speaker 3: whole lot of you know, chemistry with other guys and play.
- 1:06:53Speaker 3: It's not really all that. Like there's corners that I
- 1:06:57Speaker 3: think ty Law used to be like famous for this.
- 1:07:00Speaker 3: Like he'd stand up in the defensive meeting, he'd like
- 1:07:03Speaker 3: kind of hit the desk a little and he said,
- 1:07:05Speaker 3: I got Eric Mold.
- 1:07:06Speaker 1: What's the story, right, I'm tie I think I'm Tye Law.
- 1:07:11Speaker 1: I got Marvin Harrison and that's.
- 1:07:12Speaker 3: The later I'll see you Sunday. Ty Law is so cool, right,
- 1:07:16Speaker 3: So like that that I think is where Gonzalez is
- 1:07:18Speaker 3: at second team All Pro. He's at that level. The
- 1:07:22Speaker 3: one question that comes up with Gonzales, Uh, now that
- 1:07:25Speaker 3: we've given that part of the take, this is your
- 1:07:27Speaker 3: station's fall your station.
- 1:07:28Speaker 1: So I have a take on this, go ahead, but
- 1:07:30Speaker 1: I actually I have a legitimate question few on this.
- 1:07:32Speaker 3: So Scott emailed in and he kind of set the
- 1:07:35Speaker 3: table on this question. Do we have any inkling from
- 1:07:40Speaker 3: a tinfoil hat perspective that this is contract related for
- 1:07:43Speaker 3: Christian Gonzales. So to answer Scott's direct question, he's not
- 1:07:47Speaker 3: extension eligible until next offseason, right, going into your fourth
- 1:07:50Speaker 3: year of your rookie contract. So he has to play
- 1:07:54Speaker 3: this year on the rookie deal.
- 1:07:55Speaker 1: No matter what he can't get he can they cannot
- 1:07:57Speaker 1: pay him.
- 1:07:57Speaker 3: Yet, right, CBA thing can't pay him. So in theory,
- 1:08:02Speaker 3: like this year could be a quote unquote contract year,
- 1:08:05Speaker 3: you could look at it that way for Christian Gonzales.
- 1:08:08Speaker 3: But to me, if I'm Christian Gonzales, in just in general,
- 1:08:12Speaker 3: with Christian Gonzales, the biggest thing that's holding him back
- 1:08:16Speaker 3: from getting an absolute bag is availability with it. There's
- 1:08:21Speaker 3: no question whatsoever about performance when he's on the field,
- 1:08:24Speaker 3: whether it was the first month his rookie season or
- 1:08:26Speaker 3: it was all last year. He is an all pro
- 1:08:29Speaker 3: caliber corner. So it's not going to come down to
- 1:08:31Speaker 3: whether or not he's worth the money. What it's going
- 1:08:33Speaker 3: to come down to is whether or not he's available
- 1:08:35Speaker 3: to the team. So to me, holding out or sitting out,
- 1:08:38Speaker 3: and I guess you could say, well, he comes back
- 1:08:40Speaker 3: too early and he tweaks the hamstring again. Now he's
- 1:08:43Speaker 3: missing games, YadA, YadA, YadA. But if he's not out
- 1:08:46Speaker 3: there today, he's missing games already. So I think the
- 1:08:49Speaker 3: biggest thing that Christian Gonzales can do to prove that
- 1:08:52Speaker 3: he is worth the money that he performance wise has
- 1:08:55Speaker 3: rightfully earned next off season is be available. Keeping himself
- 1:09:00Speaker 3: off the field is the opposite.
- 1:09:01Speaker 1: I'm with you, like what hurts his value more if
- 1:09:04Speaker 1: he plays ten to twelve games but he plays them
- 1:09:10Speaker 1: at the level he played last year better, or he
- 1:09:13Speaker 1: plays sixteen or seventeen games but he's like eighty percent
- 1:09:17Speaker 1: of the player he was last year, which one hurts
- 1:09:19Speaker 1: him more contractually not being available right the fewer games.
- 1:09:24Speaker 1: So sauce Gardner was not very good last year, like relative,
- 1:09:28Speaker 1: he was not an all.
- 1:09:29Speaker 3: That's the guy that Gains brought up, is that sauce Gardener.
- 1:09:31Speaker 3: Some people think that sauce Gardner made a business decision
- 1:09:34Speaker 3: to ease up a little bit last year, which also
- 1:09:37Speaker 3: doesn't make any sense.
- 1:09:38Speaker 1: But it was his first year. He was an All
- 1:09:40Speaker 1: Pro the two years prior. He wasn't All Pro last year,
- 1:09:43Speaker 1: but he still got paid because he's out there and
- 1:09:45Speaker 1: it's on tape and I think last year's tape is
- 1:09:47Speaker 1: going to speak a ton now Gonzalz can't go out
- 1:09:49Speaker 1: there and suck right like, he's still got to be good.
- 1:09:52Speaker 1: But I think the availability is a bigger question than
- 1:09:55Speaker 1: the ability at this point. Now that's what we think.
- 1:09:59Speaker 1: Maybe him and his team see it differently. At the
- 1:10:01Speaker 1: end of the day, it only matters what he thinks
- 1:10:03Speaker 1: in that regard to the other.
- 1:10:04Speaker 3: Side of it is is that if he comes back
- 1:10:05Speaker 3: too soon and he rushes back and then he tweaks
- 1:10:08Speaker 3: the hamstring worse in a game, then now he's missing.
- 1:10:12Speaker 1: Well, so that's the other side of it. What's what's
- 1:10:15Speaker 1: you know? You weigh this. Let's even call two games,
- 1:10:18Speaker 1: right because in my if it's a hamstring thing in Miami,
- 1:10:20Speaker 1: it's hot, you can cramp up. You worry about that
- 1:10:23Speaker 1: he misses the first two games of the year, but
- 1:10:25Speaker 1: then he's available the rest of the season full go
- 1:10:27Speaker 1: one hundred percent. Or you rush him back for this
- 1:10:30Speaker 1: week or next week and he aggravates the hamstring and
- 1:10:32Speaker 1: now he misses six weeks. Right, I'd rather he miss
- 1:10:34Speaker 1: the two games. I'd rather he just miss less time.
- 1:10:36Speaker 1: They need him for more games. So I am okay
- 1:10:39Speaker 1: with them being cautious. If that's what this is. Obviously,
- 1:10:41Speaker 1: if he's not practicing because of his contract, like that's
- 1:10:44Speaker 1: not what you want, Well, I don't think that's what
- 1:10:47Speaker 1: it is. I think it's him being cautious. I also
- 1:10:49Speaker 1: think they're being cautious with their best player if he's
- 1:10:52Speaker 1: availed a problem with that.
- 1:10:54Speaker 3: If he's available for the majority of the season and
- 1:10:57Speaker 3: he plays like he did last year, he's gonna get paid.
- 1:11:00Speaker 1: He's gonna get the biggest contract of cornerbacks ever gotten.
- 1:11:02Speaker 3: He's gonna get the money. So I just I don't
- 1:11:05Speaker 3: think that there's enough incentive this early on. If this
- 1:11:07Speaker 3: was next offseason and he still hadn't signed an extension
- 1:11:11Speaker 3: yet and he was had a tweet tam String, that's
- 1:11:13Speaker 3: a totally different story. But to do that a year
- 1:11:16Speaker 3: at advance, I just I think that's that's a little
- 1:11:21Speaker 3: bit too you know, conspiracy theory. For me, we have
- 1:11:25Speaker 3: to take a break. But there's one last thing that
- 1:11:27Speaker 3: we had on our list and isn't going to be
- 1:11:28Speaker 3: quick because it's a special teams thing. Well, what's your
- 1:11:31Speaker 3: kickoffs thing? Go forward?
- 1:11:32Speaker 1: Well, let's just see like they changed their rule. It's
- 1:11:35Speaker 1: a thirty five yard touchback. This is going to be
- 1:11:37Speaker 1: a bigger play then it's been in the past, and
- 1:11:41Speaker 1: how does that ultimately look. I think this play can
- 1:11:43Speaker 1: be a weapon for teams that are good at it.
- 1:11:44Speaker 1: You can steal seven points and the Patriots look good
- 1:11:47Speaker 1: at it in the preseason. So how much of the
- 1:11:49Speaker 1: preseason was teams testing things versus teams maybe not wanting
- 1:11:52Speaker 1: to show their full hand of what they're going to do.
- 1:11:55Speaker 1: We'll see, But can it seemed like Jeremy Springer and
- 1:12:00Speaker 1: that unit had a great camp. Can they make that
- 1:12:03Speaker 1: kickoff on both sides? Can they make that kickoff play
- 1:12:05Speaker 1: a weapon? Can they make it a weapon for the
- 1:12:07Speaker 1: offense and create short fields and put points on the board,
- 1:12:09Speaker 1: And can they make it a weapon for the defense
- 1:12:11Speaker 1: and create long fields for the opponent. I love that
- 1:12:15Speaker 1: they saved the kickoff instead of getting rid of it. Obviously, yes,
- 1:12:20Speaker 1: in a perfect world, the old format was great, but
- 1:12:22Speaker 1: that was just for a number of reasons, never going
- 1:12:24Speaker 1: to last. I think this new format, when you get
- 1:12:27Speaker 1: past how weird it looks initially, is a real true
- 1:12:30Speaker 1: football play and that's enjoyable to watch. I want to
- 1:12:33Speaker 1: see if the Patriots can take advantage of maybe seemingly
- 1:12:36Speaker 1: getting ahead of it a little bit.
- 1:12:37Speaker 3: My quick take on this, I think they have multiple guys,
- 1:12:40Speaker 3: but they're probably going to start out with Henderson and
- 1:12:42Speaker 3: Antonio Gibson that are actually really well suited for big
- 1:12:47Speaker 3: returns in this new format. I think that's an advantage
- 1:12:50Speaker 3: for them. I think they actually have really good returners
- 1:12:52Speaker 3: you can throw and they haven't done this yet with
- 1:12:54Speaker 3: Marcus Jones, But Marcus Jones we know is a great
- 1:12:57Speaker 3: punt returner, and I don't think it would be I
- 1:13:00Speaker 3: think it would translate for him on kickoffs if they
- 1:13:01Speaker 3: wanted to go that direction as well. So they have
- 1:13:03Speaker 3: multiple guys that I feel like can be really good
- 1:13:06Speaker 3: at this and be factors to your point on it.
- 1:13:08Speaker 3: And because of the way the new rule is set up,
- 1:13:11Speaker 3: it's inviting returns like they want more returns. So if
- 1:13:14Speaker 3: you are forcing teams to put the ball in play
- 1:13:18Speaker 3: and the Patriots have two dynamic returners back there, then
- 1:13:21Speaker 3: that is an advantage, maybe more so than what it
- 1:13:23Speaker 3: has been in the past. So I look at it
- 1:13:26Speaker 3: and I think that this is going to be more
- 1:13:28Speaker 3: of a live play this year. I think this is
- 1:13:29Speaker 3: going to be more legitimate of a factor because if
- 1:13:32Speaker 3: you fly the ball into the end zone, it's the
- 1:13:33Speaker 3: thirty five yard line right as the touchback. Like that,
- 1:13:36Speaker 3: that's a big difference in field position. If you fly
- 1:13:39Speaker 3: the ball right out of the back of the end
- 1:13:41Speaker 3: zone and take the touch back, you only got to
- 1:13:43Speaker 3: go like it, that's sixty five yards for a touchdown.
- 1:13:46Speaker 3: But the way kickers can kick the ball now field
- 1:13:48Speaker 3: goal kickers, Like, how long are you really having to
- 1:13:51Speaker 3: go to get points on the ball?
- 1:13:52Speaker 4: Right?
- 1:13:53Speaker 3: It's not that much. So I think this is going
- 1:13:55Speaker 3: to be a big deal. I think there's gonna be
- 1:13:56Speaker 3: a lot more balls in play from a kickoff perspect
- 1:14:00Speaker 3: given the Patriots in the preseason, especially with Henderson, but
- 1:14:03Speaker 3: in general they have good returners, so this could be
- 1:14:05Speaker 3: an advantage for the team. That's maybe it was a
- 1:14:08Speaker 3: bigger deal now with the new rules than it has
- 1:14:11Speaker 3: been in the past, because I know a lot of
- 1:14:12Speaker 3: people roll their eyes at this kind of stuff when
- 1:14:14Speaker 3: we talk about special teams.
- 1:14:16Speaker 1: But no, this is an important thing. This is you
- 1:14:18Speaker 1: and different now.
- 1:14:19Speaker 3: I am wondering, though, really quickly, if this ends up
- 1:14:22Speaker 3: being too much of an impact on the game, Like
- 1:14:24Speaker 3: there's just big returns all over the place might be exciting,
- 1:14:27Speaker 3: but I don't necessarily think that's what the league had
- 1:14:29Speaker 3: in mind when they put his rule in. Is that
- 1:14:32Speaker 3: all of a sudden, the game is being decided on
- 1:14:34Speaker 3: kickoff returns. I don't think that that was the goal.
- 1:14:37Speaker 3: So if that's the case, then I wonder if it
- 1:14:39Speaker 3: becomes tweaked again next offseason. If all of a sudden, guys,
- 1:14:42Speaker 3: everybody looks like Corderyl Patterson and there's just returns left
- 1:14:45Speaker 3: and right, I don't know if that's exactly what they
- 1:14:47Speaker 3: had in mind. All Right, we have to take a
- 1:14:49Speaker 3: quick break and then we'll come right back and we'll
- 1:14:51Speaker 3: get onto the Raiders.

- 1:17:48Speaker 3: what's up? Patty?
- 1:17:51Speaker 9: Thanks good?
- 1:17:52Speaker 3: How are we doing?
- 1:17:54Speaker 5: I am doing all Really, I just wanted to kind
- 1:17:59Speaker 5: of read earlier this preseason where I met you guys.
- 1:18:05Speaker 5: I do have a couple of questions, but I just
- 1:18:07Speaker 5: wanted to say, like Evan, I meant what I said
- 1:18:09Speaker 5: to you when I said you're the best stam analyst
- 1:18:12Speaker 5: in the league, Alex I approached you, you had to
- 1:18:18Speaker 5: look in your eye like, who the hell is this
- 1:18:19Speaker 5: weirdo coming towards me?
- 1:18:22Speaker 1: But I'm sorry about that. It always takes me.
- 1:18:24Speaker 5: Man.
- 1:18:24Speaker 1: You hear voices, but you don't see faces.
- 1:18:26Speaker 5: So yeah, right, But you know, I was lucky enough
- 1:18:31Speaker 5: to take in two practices and it was awesome. It
- 1:18:33Speaker 5: was a great experience just all around. I got a
- 1:18:36Speaker 5: really good feeling about this team this year. But onto
- 1:18:39Speaker 5: the questions. The first one is, how do you guys
- 1:18:42Speaker 5: feel like they're going to defend brock Howers? Because to me,
- 1:18:46Speaker 5: I mean, Ashon Gent's a big unknown, but brock Bowers
- 1:18:49Speaker 5: is by far their best skilled player. You know, do
- 1:18:51Speaker 5: you do you think they cover them? Trying to cover
- 1:18:54Speaker 5: them one on one with Flame, which I think would
- 1:18:56Speaker 5: be a mistake. Do you think they pepper him with
- 1:18:58Speaker 5: Woodson or Hawkins and possibly Alex Austin in the slot
- 1:19:02Speaker 5: and just like take turns and see you as better.
- 1:19:04Speaker 5: And this is a little bit more question for Evan
- 1:19:08Speaker 5: because Alex, past two weeks I've thrown some questions at you.
- 1:19:10Speaker 5: And by the way, Nick Carver, I want that guy
- 1:19:13Speaker 5: that he should add two touchdowns. But do you think
- 1:19:16Speaker 5: the key to winning this game, Evan? It will both
- 1:19:19Speaker 5: of you, but Evan, you could probably go in a
- 1:19:21Speaker 5: little bit more detail is coming out and playing predominantly
- 1:19:25Speaker 5: in twenty one personnel and kind of taking the game
- 1:19:29Speaker 5: to the Raiders, the kind of game that the Raiders
- 1:19:31Speaker 5: want to play, because you know, Carol's gonna want to
- 1:19:33Speaker 5: establish the run. They're gonna want to ram the rookie
- 1:19:36Speaker 5: right down our throats. But just you know, take that,
- 1:19:39Speaker 5: take that and take it to them and sort of like,
- 1:19:42Speaker 5: you know, beat them at their own game and be
- 1:19:44Speaker 5: the more physical team. I'll take it off there, guys.
- 1:19:46Speaker 3: Thanks Patty, I had two good questions. Let's talk a
- 1:19:49Speaker 3: little bit about Bowers now, and I'm sure we're gonna
- 1:19:53Speaker 3: do key matchups. I'm assuming he was on both of
- 1:19:56Speaker 3: our lists of how you're going to match up against
- 1:19:57Speaker 3: him anyway, so we can just get this out of
- 1:19:59Speaker 3: the way with Bowers. This is a really fun first
- 1:20:04Speaker 3: test because I don't think the Raiders roster talent outside
- 1:20:08Speaker 3: of their big names like Bowers and Max Crosby, is overwhelming.
- 1:20:11Speaker 3: But they have two guys and Bowers and Crosby, who
- 1:20:17Speaker 3: are two guys that just profile as players that could
- 1:20:20Speaker 3: give the Patriots problems. So in a vacuum, it's like
- 1:20:23Speaker 3: a good first matchup because it's one I think it
- 1:20:27Speaker 3: shows you who's capable of covering tight ends that are
- 1:20:30Speaker 3: as dynamic as Bowers on the roster. But it also
- 1:20:34Speaker 3: shows us the first game plan of the Mike Rabel era,
- 1:20:38Speaker 3: Right are they going to be bellichicking in and how
- 1:20:41Speaker 3: they game plan where they are going to have a
- 1:20:44Speaker 3: unique wrinkle for brock Bauers, especially in passing situations they're
- 1:20:49Speaker 3: down two minute whatever, or are they going to kind
- 1:20:52Speaker 3: of play their base coverages and play their defense and
- 1:20:56Speaker 3: just think that the system is going to be able
- 1:20:58Speaker 3: to hold up against the guy like Bowers. I tend
- 1:21:01Speaker 3: to think it's going to be the game plan thing,
- 1:21:03Speaker 3: and I'm really hoping it's going to be the game
- 1:21:05Speaker 3: plan thing, because I think the best teams do it
- 1:21:07Speaker 3: that way. So for Bowers, there's two options. You can
- 1:21:12Speaker 3: either bracket him out of the game, you can double them,
- 1:21:15Speaker 3: or you could put a corner on him, a true
- 1:21:18Speaker 3: corner like Alex Austin or Carlton Davis and just hope
- 1:21:22Speaker 3: that because he's a tight end and he's not really
- 1:21:24Speaker 3: a true wide receiver, that a corner is going to
- 1:21:27Speaker 3: have the man coverage skills to go up against Bowers
- 1:21:30Speaker 3: because he's not particularly big, like he's only six three,
- 1:21:33Speaker 3: two forty, He's not grounk. He's not a six foot seven,
- 1:21:37Speaker 3: two hundred and fifty sixty pound tight end. He's definitely
- 1:21:40Speaker 3: more in that Travis Kelcey build. So you could technically
- 1:21:44Speaker 3: put a corner on him and they could go man
- 1:21:47Speaker 3: to man and that matchup could make a little bit
- 1:21:49Speaker 3: of sense. How do you see them just overall? Do
- 1:21:52Speaker 3: you think they're going to be really game plan heavy
- 1:21:54Speaker 3: and then specifically on Bowers? How do you see them
- 1:21:57Speaker 3: taking care of Bowers?
- 1:21:59Speaker 1: I mean, I'd I'd like see him put a corner
- 1:22:00Speaker 1: on him. Now it's a little tougher if you don't
- 1:22:02Speaker 1: have Christian Gonzalez. I think either way, Carlton Davis is
- 1:22:05Speaker 1: the guy just a little more physical, little more play strength,
- 1:22:07Speaker 1: probably the guy you want on a on a tight
- 1:22:09Speaker 1: end guy. I've compared him to a keep to leave
- 1:22:12Speaker 1: and this is what they used to do with the
- 1:22:14Speaker 1: keep to leave back in the day. Put him on
- 1:22:16Speaker 1: Jimmy Graham, put him on Tony Gonzalez and have him
- 1:22:19Speaker 1: kind of try to wipe him out of the game.
- 1:22:21Speaker 1: Then the question, if you have Gonzales, it's easy to
- 1:22:23Speaker 1: me because it's it's Gonzalez Undra Kobe Myers, it's Carlton
- 1:22:27Speaker 1: Davis on Brock Bowers. I know Dante Thornton's kind of
- 1:22:30Speaker 1: had a nice camp for them, But between Alex Austin,
- 1:22:33Speaker 1: Marcus Jones, DJ James, I think if they beat you,
- 1:22:36Speaker 1: throw in a Dante Thornton.
- 1:22:38Speaker 3: Dante Thoron is We've been there with.
- 1:22:41Speaker 1: Your cap to Gino Smith and Dante.
- 1:22:43Speaker 3: Thornton is a training camp star, like he's the guy
- 1:22:46Speaker 3: that he's he's dayk metcalf in training camp. Let's see
- 1:22:49Speaker 3: what it looks like when.
- 1:22:50Speaker 1: It right now, if they beat the Patriots throwing at
- 1:22:53Speaker 1: Dante Thorton, you tip your cap and you move on right.
- 1:22:56Speaker 1: But you know, if they don't have Gonzales, Kobe Myers
- 1:23:01Speaker 1: can get you. Like Jkobe Myers, you do have to
- 1:23:03Speaker 1: have a plan for two. Bowers is still the number
- 1:23:05Speaker 1: one option. But is it now? Do you want Davis
- 1:23:10Speaker 1: on Myers? Do you trust you know? Marcus Jones? There's
- 1:23:14Speaker 1: a little bit of seize mismatch there, Alex Austen, Where
- 1:23:18Speaker 1: is it? Do you trust him on Myers for a
- 1:23:20Speaker 1: full game? It gets a little more complicated. I'd still
- 1:23:23Speaker 1: probably try that and maybe bracket Myers and you just
- 1:23:26Speaker 1: hope Carlton Davis takes care of business against Brock Bowers.
- 1:23:29Speaker 1: But it's there's more ifs in that plan. So I
- 1:23:34Speaker 1: think with Gonzalez it's clear cut. Without Gonzalez a little
- 1:23:38Speaker 1: less so, but they still should be okay.
- 1:23:40Speaker 3: So I normally I would say double Bowers and put
- 1:23:46Speaker 3: your best corner on Myers, Like that's normally the approach
- 1:23:49Speaker 3: that I would probably take.
- 1:23:50Speaker 1: Which again, if you have Christian Zalez, I think that's
- 1:23:53Speaker 1: exactly what you do, right.
- 1:23:54Speaker 3: But at the same time, specifically to Carlton Davis, I
- 1:23:58Speaker 3: guess more so the Raiders just don't have outside receivers
- 1:24:02Speaker 3: that scare me. I'm gonna have to see it from
- 1:24:04Speaker 3: Dante Thorton. Like Dante Thorton, I know he's at a
- 1:24:06Speaker 3: good camp. Like I just said to me, he's the
- 1:24:09Speaker 3: exact type of player that would have a good training.
- 1:24:11Speaker 1: Just real quick to reset their wide receiver room. Jack
- 1:24:13Speaker 1: Betch a rookie who's a big slot, Amari Cooper who
- 1:24:17Speaker 1: signed what last week? Yeah, Jacobe Myers, Dante Thorton, and
- 1:24:20Speaker 1: they do have Trey Tucker who has some speech.
- 1:24:22Speaker 3: So to me, their receiving corp is gonna be Thornton,
- 1:24:25Speaker 3: Myers and Tucker. I think those three guys are gonna
- 1:24:27Speaker 3: play just.
- 1:24:29Speaker 1: A second round pick.
- 1:24:30Speaker 3: I know, but I don't know where. I haven't heard
- 1:24:31Speaker 3: anything about Jack Betch and training camp.
- 1:24:33Speaker 1: Do you think they do that Patriots thing where they
- 1:24:35Speaker 1: just use essentially two slot guys and then it's Thornton
- 1:24:37Speaker 1: and Tucker on the outside.
- 1:24:39Speaker 3: Tucker to me is more of like a Pop Douglas.
- 1:24:42Speaker 3: He's more of like a speed slot. So Tucker, I
- 1:24:46Speaker 3: think is obvious. Marcus Jones can take Tucker. That's fine.
- 1:24:49Speaker 1: Yep.
- 1:24:50Speaker 3: Dante Thorton, I'm putting Alex Austin or DJ James out there,
- 1:24:53Speaker 3: probably Alex Austin and just living with it.
- 1:24:55Speaker 1: I would even if Tucker's not on the field, I
- 1:24:58Speaker 1: could even put Marcus Jones on Thornton. I know Thornton
- 1:25:01Speaker 1: is the hype, but Marcus Jones is worried about the hype.
- 1:25:03Speaker 1: But Marcus Jones is the foot speed to stay with him.
- 1:25:05Speaker 1: And is he somebody you really think is going to
- 1:25:06Speaker 1: go out there? Marcus Jones is physical. Is Thornton gonna
- 1:25:09Speaker 1: go out there and moss people? Yes?
- 1:25:11Speaker 3: I think that's what he was doing in the preseason
- 1:25:13Speaker 3: winning at the catch point. I would put Alex Austen
- 1:25:15Speaker 3: on Thornton and then ideally you have Gonzo to cover
- 1:25:20Speaker 3: Jacobe Myers. Now, if Gonzo isn't there, then this whole
- 1:25:23Speaker 3: thing does get complicated, right, And this is where Gonzo's impact.
- 1:25:27Speaker 3: It's not necessarily that I think that they have like
- 1:25:30Speaker 3: a Jamar Chase level receiver that not having Gonzo for
- 1:25:33Speaker 3: is going to be problematic. It's just the trickle down
- 1:25:35Speaker 3: effect of if you want to use a corner on
- 1:25:38Speaker 3: brock Bauers, now you have to put Alex Austen on
- 1:25:41Speaker 3: Myers because he's the better player. So now you are
- 1:25:44Speaker 3: getting into a situation where Marcus Jones at DJ James
- 1:25:48Speaker 3: somebody like that is playing first of all a high
- 1:25:51Speaker 3: volume of outside cornerback snaps, but is also playing against
- 1:25:54Speaker 3: a guy like Dante Thornton that who does have size
- 1:25:56Speaker 3: and speed. So that's where it gets a little bit tricky.
- 1:26:00Speaker 3: But I'm with you. If Gino Smith beats you throwing
- 1:26:02Speaker 3: bombs to Dante Thorton, then you kind of tip the
- 1:26:04Speaker 3: cap and that's you live with that. So I think
- 1:26:07Speaker 3: Brot Bauers might be to the level already where it's
- 1:26:14Speaker 3: Carlon Davis and help. Like, I think you need to
- 1:26:17Speaker 3: have two eyes or two sets of eyes on Bowers
- 1:26:21Speaker 3: on third down. I don't think even Carlon Davis, who
- 1:26:23Speaker 3: is a good player, and I have confidence in Carlton Davis,
- 1:26:27Speaker 3: I don't even think that is just enough. Like this
- 1:26:29Speaker 3: guy is Bowers is a unique talent. He's an lead
- 1:26:32Speaker 3: elite player. So I think you on third down, especially,
- 1:26:35Speaker 3: you're gonna have to have two sets of eyes on
- 1:26:38Speaker 3: Bratt Bauers, even if it is a corner that's covering him.
- 1:26:41Speaker 3: So I would say that if it's no gonzo, Yeah,
- 1:26:46Speaker 3: Davis with safety help on Bratt Bawers in the middle
- 1:26:49Speaker 3: of the field, Alex Ausen on Jacobe Myers, and then
- 1:26:55Speaker 3: whoever the third receiver is is matchup based here, it's
- 1:26:58Speaker 3: DJ James maybe for a little bit more sizing though
- 1:27:01Speaker 3: he's not a big dude necessarily, but maybe a little
- 1:27:04Speaker 3: bit more size than Marcus Jones on Dante Thornton, or
- 1:27:07Speaker 3: it's just Marcus Jones on Tucker or Thornton. I think
- 1:27:11Speaker 3: Tucker is gonna play a lot on third down. He's
- 1:27:14Speaker 3: a sense He's a Pop Douglas type. He's a slot
- 1:27:17Speaker 3: speed slot, good separator, good field stretcher from the slot.
- 1:27:22Speaker 3: I would definitely think he would play a lot. I'm
- 1:27:24Speaker 3: interested to see what they do with Bowers. It's a
- 1:27:26Speaker 3: first real example that we're gonna have of how game
- 1:27:30Speaker 3: plan oriented are they gonna be? How are are they
- 1:27:33Speaker 3: a bracket team?
- 1:27:34Speaker 6: You know?
- 1:27:34Speaker 3: Are they gonna bracket guys? Are they gonna put two
- 1:27:37Speaker 3: true double teams on him? Based off they're a Tennessee
- 1:27:40Speaker 3: tape they have, They definitely have bracket calls within their coverage.
- 1:27:44Speaker 3: I watched a little bit of them against the Dolphins
- 1:27:46Speaker 3: just to get ahead for next week. And they were
- 1:27:48Speaker 3: doubling Wattle and Hill in that matchup in twenty twenty three.
- 1:27:52Speaker 3: So they definitely have those bracket calls that Belichick would have,
- 1:27:55Speaker 3: you know, a cone bracket where you're inside out or
- 1:27:57Speaker 3: over under bracket where there's a safety over the top
- 1:28:00Speaker 3: and a corner underneath. And then you'll have you know,
- 1:28:02Speaker 3: Cover seven, which is really a split safety coverage, but
- 1:28:06Speaker 3: the safeties are bracketing instead of playing zone. They're bracketing
- 1:28:09Speaker 3: receivers instead. So that's a Saban terminology that goes around
- 1:28:14Speaker 3: a lot. So you have that ability with Bowers. Now
- 1:28:17Speaker 3: you don't need to double Jacobe Myers. I don't think
- 1:28:20Speaker 3: I like Jacoby great player. I don't think he's double category.
- 1:28:24Speaker 1: I think not with the corner talent that they have.
- 1:28:26Speaker 3: Yeah, I would agree to Patty's second question. My guess
- 1:28:31Speaker 3: is is that we're going to see the Patriots come
- 1:28:34Speaker 3: out in heavy personnel on offense and try to establish
- 1:28:37Speaker 3: the line of scrimmage. That's just that's a season long thing,
- 1:28:41Speaker 3: like they're going to want to be the more physical
- 1:28:43Speaker 3: team for seventeen straight games. So I think dominating or
- 1:28:47Speaker 3: trying to establish and win the line of scrimmage as
- 1:28:49Speaker 3: much as that kind of stuff gets my my nerd senses,
- 1:28:53Speaker 3: you know, all out of whack that that, to me
- 1:28:56Speaker 3: is going to be just there.
- 1:28:57Speaker 1: You're going to have to establish the run.
- 1:28:59Speaker 3: Unfortunately, it's just how they want to play. It's how
- 1:29:03Speaker 3: Mike Raba wants to play, and it's not about oh,
- 1:29:05Speaker 3: are they gonna be you know, Derrick Henry Titan's era,
- 1:29:08Speaker 3: and they're just gonna run the ball And no, I
- 1:29:10Speaker 3: think they're still going to pass the ball and be
- 1:29:12Speaker 3: aggressive throwing the football. But I definitely think that from
- 1:29:15Speaker 3: a just setting a tone standpoint, I do think that
- 1:29:20Speaker 3: they're gonna come out in the opening drive with Jack
- 1:29:22Speaker 3: Westover in the backfield as a lead full back, and
- 1:29:25Speaker 3: they're gonna want to run it down Vegas' throats. Running
- 1:29:29Speaker 3: the football is also a nice way, even though he's
- 1:29:32Speaker 3: a really good run player as well, when you run
- 1:29:35Speaker 3: it at pass rushers, they don't like it so much. Right,
- 1:29:39Speaker 3: So if you can throw a bunch of different angles
- 1:29:43Speaker 3: at Max Crosby, you know, pull at him, lead the
- 1:29:46Speaker 3: full back at him, wham him, I do a bunch
- 1:29:49Speaker 3: of different pitches, so I change up your pitches of
- 1:29:51Speaker 3: how you're attacking him. You can start to get him
- 1:29:54Speaker 3: on his heels a little bit and start forcing him
- 1:29:56Speaker 3: to think and process the game and often can slow
- 1:30:01Speaker 3: down how good he is as a pass rusher. And
- 1:30:03Speaker 3: if he's getting ear hold and he's getting guards are
- 1:30:06Speaker 3: pulling towards him and he's got to hold up like that,
- 1:30:09Speaker 3: he doesn't want to do that. He wants to fly
- 1:30:11Speaker 3: up the field and get the ball right, That's what
- 1:30:13Speaker 3: Max Crosby wants to do. So if you can come
- 1:30:17Speaker 3: out and you can frankly punch him in the mouth
- 1:30:19Speaker 3: a little bit, that often helps with a lot of
- 1:30:22Speaker 3: these pass rushers. Now, Crosby is a different animal. He's
- 1:30:25Speaker 3: a great player against the run and the pass. So
- 1:30:27Speaker 3: this isn't necessarily one of those guys. It's like a
- 1:30:30Speaker 3: finesse player that can be taken out of the game
- 1:30:32Speaker 3: that way. But I still think it can be an advantage.
- 1:30:35Speaker 3: So I expect both those things to happen. Let's take Garrett,
- 1:30:41Speaker 3: is that po Florida fl what's up, Garrett? Garrett? All right, Garrett,
- 1:30:50Speaker 3: call us back. We had to do on hold for
- 1:30:51Speaker 3: a little bit. Let's get to Ben and Philly. What's
- 1:30:54Speaker 3: up Ben?
- 1:30:56Speaker 8: Hey, Yeah, I just had a question about how you
- 1:31:00Speaker 8: feel Mike Frable handles media differently than in the past.
- 1:31:04Speaker 8: So with the Forgit in Foxborough series, it just seems
- 1:31:08Speaker 8: like there's a high level of media access that we
- 1:31:12Speaker 8: get to see as fans, which is great. How do
- 1:31:13Speaker 8: you guys think that's going to impact the team and
- 1:31:16Speaker 8: will just continue going forward?
- 1:31:18Speaker 3: Yeah, Ben, thanks for the call. So to be clear,
- 1:31:21Speaker 3: fortune of Foxborough is being produced in house, so maybe
- 1:31:25Speaker 3: this is a little bit but inside baseball. But yeah,
- 1:31:28Speaker 3: not to like say Ben was wrong, but I wouldn't
- 1:31:30Speaker 3: consider that media right.
- 1:31:31Speaker 1: Yeah, that's different than like the Beat reporters. That's yes, like, yeah,
- 1:31:38Speaker 1: that's a Patriots production.
- 1:31:39Speaker 3: Correct, it's a Craft sports production. That's an internal thing. Now,
- 1:31:43Speaker 3: I will give Mike Frabel. I will thank Mike Frabel
- 1:31:47Speaker 3: for last couple of practices that we got to see.
- 1:31:51Speaker 3: Those were not required practices to be open to the media,
- 1:31:55Speaker 3: and he allowed the media as a whole, Beat writers
- 1:31:58Speaker 3: everybody to watch two more additional practices when they got
- 1:32:02Speaker 3: back from New York from the final preseason game. So
- 1:32:05Speaker 3: we got maybe a little a few more practices than
- 1:32:07Speaker 3: we would normally get from Mike Vrabel from a training
- 1:32:10Speaker 3: camp standpoint, But I would say it's pretty consistent, like
- 1:32:12Speaker 3: this is all stuff and it's it's guidelines. It's not
- 1:32:15Speaker 3: necessarily required, but this is all stuff that the Pro
- 1:32:18Speaker 3: Football Writers Association in the league have an agreement on
- 1:32:23Speaker 3: of like how much access we're going to get in
- 1:32:25Speaker 3: terms of media availability, press conferences, practice availability. Like a
- 1:32:29Speaker 3: lot of this stuff is already kind of outlined ahead
- 1:32:32Speaker 3: of time of how that's all going to work. And
- 1:32:33Speaker 3: then with Forge, we'll see you stay tuned on Forge.
- 1:32:38Speaker 3: Have you watched episode three yet?
- 1:32:39Speaker 1: I've watched like half of it. I need to catch
- 1:32:41Speaker 1: up on it. This was my drop right before college
- 1:32:43Speaker 1: football Saturday, so it's like.
- 1:32:45Speaker 3: This is that this is my favorite episode of the three,
- 1:32:48Speaker 3: not that I thought any all of them were great,
- 1:32:51Speaker 3: but this episode in particular I really enjoyed because this
- 1:32:54Speaker 3: is this is the best time for the behind the
- 1:32:57Speaker 3: scenes access with training camp, where you have of the
- 1:33:00Speaker 3: Afton Chisholm storyline and the Elijah Ponders storylines, of the
- 1:33:03Speaker 3: undrafted guys trying to make the team. We have the
- 1:33:06Speaker 3: team coming together. You have practiced footage, live practice footage,
- 1:33:09Speaker 3: my frable, you know, jumping into the pile like you
- 1:33:11Speaker 3: have all these different things, whereas once we get into
- 1:33:15Speaker 3: the season, it becomes a little bit more formulaic and
- 1:33:18Speaker 3: there's not those underdog stories necessarily. And this is why
- 1:33:22Speaker 3: hard Docks is great is because of this time of
- 1:33:24Speaker 3: year in training camp. So I felt the same way
- 1:33:27Speaker 3: about Forge. So Forge three is out now, stay tuned
- 1:33:30Speaker 3: about Forged four and beyond. That's a way above my
- 1:33:34Speaker 3: pay grade to make those decisions of when these things happen.
- 1:33:38Speaker 3: So we'll see about that. But that's let's talk a
- 1:33:42Speaker 3: little college football. Le's talk a little college football. Always,
- 1:33:45Speaker 3: we have a college football question, and this is something
- 1:33:47Speaker 3: that I've been wondering Alex, and I know what I
- 1:33:49Speaker 3: think your answer is going to be, but I'm curious.
- 1:33:51Speaker 3: So this is from Aiden in California, and he said
- 1:33:55Speaker 3: he loves the show, Thanks Sadan, And he was watching
- 1:33:58Speaker 3: some college football this past weekend. So was I. I
- 1:34:01Speaker 3: watched a decent amount of college football.
- 1:34:04Speaker 1: Did you enjoy it?
- 1:34:05Speaker 3: I somewhat enjoyed it.
- 1:34:06Speaker 1: Sure, yeah you did.
- 1:34:08Speaker 3: No, I have some gripes, but it's fine. I think
- 1:34:11Speaker 3: that just quickly get this off my chest. College quarterbacks
- 1:34:15Speaker 3: drive me crazy. The next college quarterback to recognize that
- 1:34:19Speaker 3: the slot is blitzing it will be the first like
- 1:34:21Speaker 3: how it can't be.
- 1:34:22Speaker 1: This part what makes it fun. It's chaotic. I'm telling
- 1:34:24Speaker 1: you this hard.
- 1:34:25Speaker 3: You're hot to the field, bro, You're hot, like throw
- 1:34:28Speaker 3: the ball.
- 1:34:29Speaker 1: So I think that's part of what makes it fun.
- 1:34:31Speaker 1: It's like because you can see it and they can't.
- 1:34:34Speaker 1: You don't enjoy that.
- 1:34:34Speaker 4: A lot of good.
- 1:34:36Speaker 3: That's bad football.
- 1:34:37Speaker 1: The So I think this year's class as a whole
- 1:34:41Speaker 1: is kind of overrated. There's some guys I like, but
- 1:34:43Speaker 1: I think people are too high on it. The next
- 1:34:46Speaker 1: couple of classes, so you're going to have next year
- 1:34:52Speaker 1: is DJ Lagway next year, I'm trying to remember who
- 1:34:56Speaker 1: else is in it, like arch Manning. We saw arch
- 1:35:00Speaker 1: Manning on Sunday. This is my point, DJ Lagway Julian
- 1:35:05Speaker 1: saying the kid from TCU is probably going to stay
- 1:35:08Speaker 1: another year. Hooever, he was good. And then I'll say
- 1:35:12Speaker 1: that some of the true freshmen. So first of all,
- 1:35:14Speaker 1: Bryce under I don't know, you probably didn't watch any
- 1:35:15Speaker 1: of Michigan. They were playing New Mexico, and granted it
- 1:35:19Speaker 1: was against New Mexico. Bryce Underwood looked and look, he's
- 1:35:23Speaker 1: a number one back recruit in the country. He should
- 1:35:25Speaker 1: look really good. He looks unbelievable. Also, Maryland has a
- 1:35:28Speaker 1: true freshman quarterback in the Lakue Washington was kind of nice. Again,
- 1:35:31Speaker 1: it was against a lesser opponent. But this year's quarterback
- 1:35:34Speaker 1: class is fine. It's definitely better than last year. I
- 1:35:37Speaker 1: think more guys are going to fall than rise as
- 1:35:40Speaker 1: we go through the process the next two years. I'm
- 1:35:42Speaker 1: very excited for last year's true freshman and then this
- 1:35:47Speaker 1: year's true freshman. I think is a strong class.
- 1:35:49Speaker 3: I was overall pretty disappointed by what I saw from
- 1:35:53Speaker 3: this quarterback class because I do think there is some
- 1:35:55Speaker 3: hype around this quarterback.
- 1:35:56Speaker 1: There is, and look, I think club Nick is another
- 1:36:00Speaker 1: guy that's maybe even propped up by the system and
- 1:36:03Speaker 1: Clemson my ten years ago Garret or fifte years ago
- 1:36:07Speaker 1: Garrett Usmiers a first round pick. Now, I wonder if
- 1:36:10Speaker 1: maybe his athleticism puts a ceiling on things. But there's
- 1:36:12Speaker 1: individual traits there, you like. I don't know that he's
- 1:36:15Speaker 1: ultimately going to prove.
- 1:36:16Speaker 3: He seemed to have to be that first round profile
- 1:36:18Speaker 3: from a reading the defense like pre snat right, but
- 1:36:22Speaker 3: that only takes you so.
- 1:36:23Speaker 1: Far as right. Now, Feranana Mendoza didn't really play anybody,
- 1:36:26Speaker 1: Sam Levinton, Planny Boy, Jordan Tyson though goes for one
- 1:36:28Speaker 1: hundred and twenty seven yards. Been telling you about story.
- 1:36:30Speaker 1: It was against Northern Arizona, So we'll wait and see.
- 1:36:34Speaker 1: The one guy I came away really impressed with from
- 1:36:36Speaker 1: this upcoming class was Leonora Sellers. Took him a little
- 1:36:39Speaker 1: bit to get going in that game, but once he
- 1:36:41Speaker 1: got going fourth quarter, once he and that's not uncommon
- 1:36:44Speaker 1: for week one in college and the NFL, So we'll
- 1:36:46Speaker 1: see again. He's got to do more. But a lot
- 1:36:50Speaker 1: of these guys just kind of trudged along all game.
- 1:36:53Speaker 1: His ability to adjust within the game I thought was impressive,
- 1:36:55Speaker 1: and he was the one guy I thought more us
- 1:37:00Speaker 1: lived up to expectations.
- 1:37:01Speaker 3: So to go back to the email or the question
- 1:37:05Speaker 3: here from Aiden is about Caleb Downs. So who I
- 1:37:08Speaker 3: know is one of your favorite players in college?
- 1:37:09Speaker 1: Yeah, I want to know what you thought watching Caleb
- 1:37:11Speaker 1: Down That's what I'm curious about.
- 1:37:13Speaker 3: I have to admit I think Caleb Downs is a
- 1:37:15Speaker 3: great player. I mean you could see it all on
- 1:37:18Speaker 3: the tape last year, you know, from their national championship run.
- 1:37:21Speaker 3: Those that don't know he's a safety Ohio State. Caleb
- 1:37:24Speaker 3: Downs some people I don't necessarily see, Like, I don't
- 1:37:29Speaker 3: know exactly who I would compare him to yet.
- 1:37:31Speaker 1: So did you see Tom you so hot?
- 1:37:36Speaker 3: Take? I don't. I don't see Ed re.
- 1:37:38Speaker 1: Stylistically, he's not the same guy, but he plays a
- 1:37:40Speaker 1: weird comp But just to throw that out there, he.
- 1:37:42Speaker 3: Plays way more closer to the line of scrimmage than
- 1:37:45Speaker 3: Ed Reid did.
- 1:37:46Speaker 1: He's he's kind of everywhere.
- 1:37:48Speaker 3: Yeah, So the question from Aiden is would Caleb Downs
- 1:37:52Speaker 3: be a possible pick for the Patriots next year? On
- 1:37:57Speaker 3: just to like keep it one hundred, Caleb Downs might
- 1:37:59Speaker 3: be the best non quarterback player in the entire draft.
- 1:38:03Speaker 1: He might be the best player in the entire draft.
- 1:38:05Speaker 3: Sure, best player in the entire draft. But taking the
- 1:38:09Speaker 3: he's not going to go number one overall, They're not.
- 1:38:11Speaker 3: They're not taking a safety number one.
- 1:38:12Speaker 1: Over probably not. If one was going to go number one,
- 1:38:15Speaker 1: he's the profile, but probably not.
- 1:38:17Speaker 3: You're right, he's not going to So the two questions
- 1:38:21Speaker 3: with Caleb Downs. I know that this is kind of annoying,
- 1:38:26Speaker 3: but it is what it is, the fact that he's
- 1:38:28Speaker 3: a safety is going to come into play the positional
- 1:38:30Speaker 3: value of drafting a safety in the top five or
- 1:38:32Speaker 3: the top ten is going to come into play. It
- 1:38:34Speaker 3: just doesn't happen very often, and Caleb Downs being an
- 1:38:38Speaker 3: exceptional player might just be the the exception to that.
- 1:38:42Speaker 3: It reminds me a little bit of Kyle Hamilton coming out. Now,
- 1:38:45Speaker 3: Kyle Hamilton bombed the combine right a bad workout and
- 1:38:49Speaker 3: not pushed him down the board. But I don't think
- 1:38:52Speaker 3: it's totally out of the realm of possibility that because
- 1:38:55Speaker 3: he plays safety, because you're going to have potentially three
- 1:38:58Speaker 3: or four quarterbacks that are going to go early. Although
- 1:39:01Speaker 3: he played poorly, I think Caden Proctor and Spencer Finell
- 1:39:04Speaker 3: are still going to go pretty early at tackle. And
- 1:39:06Speaker 3: then you also have Peter Woods who and the Clemson
- 1:39:09Speaker 3: defensers who are more pass rusher.
- 1:39:12Speaker 1: And did you watch any of Miami Notre Dames a
- 1:39:16Speaker 1: little bit? Number four on defense for Miami Rubin Bain, Yeah,
- 1:39:19Speaker 1: so all those guys.
- 1:39:20Speaker 3: He's our premium position players, So is it I don't
- 1:39:26Speaker 3: think it's totally crazy to say that if the Patriots
- 1:39:29Speaker 3: have a better but not great season, Let's say they
- 1:39:33Speaker 3: win six to eight games, and they're picking in the
- 1:39:35Speaker 3: early teams of the draft, Caleb Downs. I don't think
- 1:39:39Speaker 3: it's totally out of the realm of possibility that Caleb
- 1:39:42Speaker 3: Downs could be on the board for them.
- 1:39:44Speaker 1: And he'd be a great fit for this defense. I'll
- 1:39:45Speaker 1: just say this. Hamilton went fourteenth. Kyle Hamilton was obviously
- 1:39:49Speaker 1: a great safety prospect. Yes, Caleb Downs is better Caleb Downs.
- 1:39:53Speaker 1: I think he is in another tier.
- 1:39:54Speaker 3: And I think I don't think Caleb Downs is going
- 1:39:55Speaker 3: to have athletic testing issues. But that's what put Kyle Hamilton.
- 1:39:59Speaker 1: So there's there's two guys in this draft. The other
- 1:40:01Speaker 1: thing I think, and I don't know if it's going
- 1:40:03Speaker 1: to help hurt Caleb Downs. You're getting much more. And
- 1:40:06Speaker 1: this is we hear this all the time. The college
- 1:40:09Speaker 1: game is ten years ahead of the NFL. The innovations
- 1:40:11Speaker 1: that we're seeing in college usually get to the NFL
- 1:40:13Speaker 1: a decade later. That's why guys like Tamon Austin and
- 1:40:17Speaker 1: the guy from Florida. Why am I branking up blanking
- 1:40:19Speaker 1: on his name? Darius Tony no earlier Florida. Yeah, the
- 1:40:25Speaker 1: speedster Jeff Demps, No same team he played Percy Arvin,
- 1:40:29Speaker 1: Oh Percy. That's why these guys like didn't hit in
- 1:40:31Speaker 1: the NFL. You put Percy Harvin in the NFL. Now
- 1:40:34Speaker 1: he's a stud, but teams just didn't know how to
- 1:40:36Speaker 1: use that guy.
- 1:40:36Speaker 4: Yet.
- 1:40:37Speaker 1: You're seeing a lot more positionless football in college right
- 1:40:40Speaker 1: now defensively, and Caleb Downs is a safety, but he's
- 1:40:44Speaker 1: also not just a safety. He can play linebacker. He
- 1:40:48Speaker 1: can play slot corner. And it's not like, Okay, a
- 1:40:51Speaker 1: safety who can He's not like a box safety who
- 1:40:53Speaker 1: you calling a linebacker because he's lining up in the box.
- 1:40:56Speaker 1: He can play linebacker, can rush the passer, he can
- 1:40:58Speaker 1: fit the run. Another guy I look at and I
- 1:41:01Speaker 1: got some questions about him on Twitter this weekend. I'm
- 1:41:03Speaker 1: a big fan is Harold Perkins. So if you watch
- 1:41:05Speaker 1: at LSU game number seven on defense, where he's listed
- 1:41:09Speaker 1: as a linebacker, he kind of plays more like a
- 1:41:12Speaker 1: safety and he has some coverage responsibilities. You know, he'll
- 1:41:17Speaker 1: rush the pass or he does a little bit of everything.
- 1:41:19Speaker 1: And our NFL team's ready for that guy. Yet that
- 1:41:24Speaker 1: you don't really have a position, you can kind of
- 1:41:27Speaker 1: do everything. It's either you create a role in the
- 1:41:31Speaker 1: defense for that guy that's hard to match up with,
- 1:41:33Speaker 1: or you use him as a matchup player differently week
- 1:41:35Speaker 1: to week. I don't think Caleb Down's role is going
- 1:41:38Speaker 1: to be the same next week, and I don't think
- 1:41:39Speaker 1: it'll be the same the week after that. I think
- 1:41:41Speaker 1: Matt Patricia's gonna kind of use him as a fixer
- 1:41:43Speaker 1: as a stopper, depending on what the other team does well.
- 1:41:46Speaker 1: Harold Perkins is more of a true linebacker, but I
- 1:41:49Speaker 1: think you'll see some of the same with him. You'll
- 1:41:51Speaker 1: see him in coverage more some weeks, you see him
- 1:41:53Speaker 1: rushing the pass or more some weeks. There have been
- 1:41:55Speaker 1: some Micah Parsons ish comps with him. Now he's coming
- 1:41:58Speaker 1: off with torn acls, so he's got to show the
- 1:42:00Speaker 1: leticism can stay up. At the point being like, I
- 1:42:03Speaker 1: wonder if Caleb Downs he might fall because of the
- 1:42:07Speaker 1: positional value. He might just be so good that if
- 1:42:10Speaker 1: you get the right defensive coordinator looking at it and saying,
- 1:42:12Speaker 1: this guy can do everything I want him to do,
- 1:42:16Speaker 1: that kind of nullifies it because that's the way college
- 1:42:18Speaker 1: teams are using their best players right now. Some of
- 1:42:20Speaker 1: the best defensive players in college football, they don't have
- 1:42:22Speaker 1: a position. They just kind of do whatever's asked of them,
- 1:42:25Speaker 1: and that's coming to the NFL. Maybe not this year,
- 1:42:28Speaker 1: maybe not with this class, but it's coming in this class.
- 1:42:31Speaker 1: Between Downs and Perkins would be a good place to start.
- 1:42:35Speaker 3: So Caleb Downs, I want to say that I think
- 1:42:40Speaker 3: the Patriots are going to be better, and I hope
- 1:42:42Speaker 3: the Patriots are going to be too good to draft
- 1:42:44Speaker 3: Caleb Downs. But when you cut Jabrill Peppers and definitely
- 1:42:47Speaker 3: seems like Kyle Duggar is not part of the long
- 1:42:49Speaker 3: term plans here with the Patriots and Mike Rabel. If
- 1:42:53Speaker 3: the Patriots have a better but not great season, like
- 1:42:56Speaker 3: I said earlier, and they only win seven or eight
- 1:42:58Speaker 3: games and they're picking in the early teams, I think
- 1:43:00Speaker 3: Caleb Downs would be a slam dunk like home run
- 1:43:03Speaker 3: type of fit for them to fill safety and have
- 1:43:06Speaker 3: an impact safety like Caleb.
- 1:43:09Speaker 1: Downs is a I don't care what your needs are.
- 1:43:12Speaker 1: Your needs are run up the card, pick them play
- 1:43:15Speaker 1: so the But.
- 1:43:16Speaker 3: It also it's going to be in need, like it
- 1:43:18Speaker 3: is gonna be a need.
- 1:43:18Speaker 1: But I don't, I don't.
- 1:43:19Speaker 3: I know people people have gotten a combination of people.
- 1:43:22Speaker 1: Have gotten on this show, maybe me in particular for
- 1:43:24Speaker 1: harping on the need part of the draft too much.
- 1:43:26Speaker 1: If Caleb Downs is realistically and play for the Patriots,
- 1:43:29Speaker 1: that you're not going to hear that take from the
- 1:43:30Speaker 1: show to site clip it if you want. I'd be
- 1:43:33Speaker 1: very surprised if I change course on that unless he
- 1:43:35Speaker 1: gets hurt. H Derwin James Buddha Baker might be two
- 1:43:38Speaker 1: comps for Caleb Down, but there is there isn't really
- 1:43:42Speaker 1: a player in the NFL better than Dwin, but not
- 1:43:46Speaker 1: Durwin's you know, thick as Darwin.
- 1:43:50Speaker 3: All right, well guy, we'll work on that. Let's get
- 1:43:52Speaker 3: back to the phones. Mark is in Connecticut. What's up, Mark?
- 1:43:56Speaker 5: What's going on?
- 1:43:57Speaker 10: My brother? They the Oh, Pepper's totally shocked at that.
- 1:44:02Speaker 10: I mean, just a veteran presence in the room at
- 1:44:05Speaker 10: that in a again, a Mike Vrabel kind of guy
- 1:44:07Speaker 10: I always thought, so I'm shocked at that. I'm also
- 1:44:10Speaker 10: shocked at the Stefan Diggs that he's not a captain
- 1:44:13Speaker 10: because I was there a lot of training camp and
- 1:44:15Speaker 10: the guy's a vocal leader. Seems like he's going to
- 1:44:17Speaker 10: be a good fit for the wide receivers for the youngins.
- 1:44:20Speaker 10: And then my last thing is, uh number eighty seven, Now,
- 1:44:23Speaker 10: who's gonna wear number eighty seven if Jack Westover is
- 1:44:26Speaker 10: now taking over thirteen Crons number.
- 1:44:30Speaker 3: Yeah, thanks for the call mark number eighty seven. Maybe nobody,
- 1:44:34Speaker 3: I don't know, just throwing it.
- 1:44:35Speaker 1: Out there, say he's going to retire. By the way,
- 1:44:38Speaker 1: Durwin six fifteen, Caleb Down six foot two o five
- 1:44:43Speaker 1: So not Durren's bigger, Durwin's taller, but ten pounds two
- 1:44:47Speaker 1: inches like that's that's a lot of size, all right,
- 1:44:50Speaker 1: that matters. If he didn't know, Downs might be bulky er.
- 1:44:55Speaker 1: I'm saying, more compact, more compact. Yeah, muscle hamster.
- 1:45:00Speaker 3: Sam is in Virginia. What's up?
- 1:45:02Speaker 6: Sam?
- 1:45:03Speaker 5: Hey you guys, can you hear me?
- 1:45:04Speaker 6: Yes?
- 1:45:05Speaker 9: Yeah, great, appreciate you taking my call. So just two
- 1:45:08Speaker 9: quick questions on the old line. So it looks like
- 1:45:11Speaker 9: Jared Wilson's going to start the year at left sward
- 1:45:14Speaker 9: is the McDaniel's offense, which is generally the more valuable
- 1:45:18Speaker 9: air for important position left guard or center. I just
- 1:45:21Speaker 9: want to better understand his long term value. And second
- 1:45:25Speaker 9: is about Josh Simmons. It looks like he's going to
- 1:45:29Speaker 9: start week one for the Chiefs, knowing in the pre
- 1:45:33Speaker 9: draft process he was considered maybe the top left tackle prospect,
- 1:45:39Speaker 9: do you think, knowing what we know now, that the
- 1:45:40Speaker 9: Patriots might have considered him over Campbell or ranked him
- 1:45:43Speaker 9: over Campbell if they knew he'd be healthy for Week one.
- 1:45:46Speaker 9: I'm curious about that, but appreciate you taking my call.
- 1:45:48Speaker 9: Take it off line.
- 1:45:49Speaker 3: Hey, thanks Sam.
- 1:45:50Speaker 1: No, I don't think so, but you didn't know. I mean, yeah,
- 1:45:54Speaker 1: hindsight's fifty to fifty. Is that twenty it's twenty twenty. Yeah,
- 1:45:58Speaker 1: hindsight's twenty twenty. No, I you don't think with the
- 1:46:03Speaker 1: Raiders knowing what they know now, go back and draft
- 1:46:05Speaker 1: Calvin Johnson over JaMarcus But.
- 1:46:06Speaker 3: Like, don't, Yeah, I know, don't pick on the caller
- 1:46:10Speaker 3: too much.
- 1:46:10Speaker 1: I'm not picking on the call. But I've seen this
- 1:46:12Speaker 1: a few times.
- 1:46:12Speaker 3: It's a question that we knew was coming, Alex, like
- 1:46:14Speaker 3: you and I have been steadfast on this about Josh
- 1:46:17Speaker 3: Simmons during the draft process, that we would not have
- 1:46:20Speaker 3: taken the risk on Josh Simmons. And if Josh Simmons
- 1:46:22Speaker 3: goes on and is a franchise tackle for the Chiefs,
- 1:46:25Speaker 3: we'll never live it down. But that's the business one.
- 1:46:28Speaker 1: He didn't know and you couldn't know you looked at
- 1:46:30Speaker 1: the medicals. I don't think the Patriots were the only
- 1:46:32Speaker 1: team that were afraid of the medicals. Because he fell
- 1:46:34Speaker 1: all the way to thirty sevens.
- 1:46:35Speaker 3: There was no way they were drafting Josh Simmons at
- 1:46:37Speaker 3: four over. I also much different conversation.
- 1:46:39Speaker 1: I don't know. People say, well, you know he was
- 1:46:42Speaker 1: the top rank tackle on the Patriot where was he
- 1:46:43Speaker 1: the top Will Campbell's top rank tackle everywhere?
- 1:46:46Speaker 3: But he was probably considered the best pass protector left
- 1:46:51Speaker 3: tackle in the draft, like the pure blind side protector thing.
- 1:46:54Speaker 3: But my whole thing with Josh Simmons was not just
- 1:46:57Speaker 3: the injury. It was also the fact that he had
- 1:46:59Speaker 3: such a small sample size of really good performance. His
- 1:47:03Speaker 3: tape from twenty three from to twenty four improved significantly
- 1:47:07Speaker 3: over that time, and he really only did it against
- 1:47:10Speaker 3: Scrubs in twenty twenty four because he got hurt halfway
- 1:47:12Speaker 3: through the Oregon game and didn't play the rest of
- 1:47:14Speaker 3: the season, so you never actually saw him against NFL
- 1:47:17Speaker 3: caliber competition. He dominated Michigan State and like that level
- 1:47:21Speaker 3: of competition, but how is he going to look in
- 1:47:24Speaker 3: a full game against Oregon and the college Football Playoff
- 1:47:27Speaker 3: like those types of matchups you never would have known.
- 1:47:30Speaker 3: And as a team like the Patriots, that the most
- 1:47:32Speaker 3: important thing for the Patriots right now when it comes
- 1:47:35Speaker 3: to drafting is getting on base, like they need to
- 1:47:38Speaker 3: hit on these picks. And there's just a lot of
- 1:47:40Speaker 3: inherent risk that was coming with Josh Simmons both was
- 1:47:44Speaker 3: it going to translate and was it? Was it actually
- 1:47:46Speaker 3: real what we saw at the beginning before he got
- 1:47:49Speaker 3: hurt and injury history, that they are just not in
- 1:47:54Speaker 3: a position to take risks on players like that. The
- 1:47:57Speaker 3: Kansas City Chiefs are exactly in the position to take a.
- 1:48:00Speaker 1: Well, we talked that Patriots took. My comp for him was,
- 1:48:04Speaker 1: who is the defensive lineman from Florida? Why can't I
- 1:48:06Speaker 1: do names today? The defensive tackle who had the torn
- 1:48:09Speaker 1: a cl from Florida?
- 1:48:11Speaker 3: Yeah, Dominique Easley.
- 1:48:13Speaker 1: Yeah, they do because the Patriots could take that risk.
- 1:48:15Speaker 1: Dominique Easley was a top ten talent who had bad
- 1:48:17Speaker 1: knees and the didn't know if he'd stay healthy. And
- 1:48:20Speaker 1: just one more thing, he made it to Week one
- 1:48:22Speaker 1: knowing he'd be healthy. Do you think they would have
- 1:48:24Speaker 1: drafted him? Not for over It's also it's not like
- 1:48:28Speaker 1: these are mostly non contact practices. He now has to
- 1:48:31Speaker 1: stay healthy over the course of this season and the next.
- 1:48:33Speaker 1: And then like there was too much risk. There was
- 1:48:36Speaker 1: too much risk with that injury. Yeah, there's way too
- 1:48:39Speaker 1: much risk with that injury.
- 1:48:40Speaker 3: Injury and performance and the and would go hand in hand. Yeah,
- 1:48:44Speaker 3: but like it just didn't make sense for this team.
- 1:48:47Speaker 3: The Eagles, the the Chiefs, the Bills, the Lions, like
- 1:48:53Speaker 3: those are teams that can take on those kinds of risks.
- 1:48:55Speaker 3: The Patriots are just not in that spot. It's not
- 1:48:58Speaker 3: exactly uh apples to apples, but it's not that different
- 1:49:02Speaker 3: than being in on Micah Parsons right, Like, it's just
- 1:49:04Speaker 3: they're just not ready for that type of stuff yet.
- 1:49:06Speaker 3: If they're good, yeah, and they get into the second
- 1:49:08Speaker 3: round next year, and they won ten games this year
- 1:49:11Speaker 3: and you want to talk me into them drafting a
- 1:49:13Speaker 3: guy that has an injury history, then okay, then that's
- 1:49:15Speaker 3: a different conversation. Dominique Easley, right, Sony Michelle, like those guys, like,
- 1:49:20Speaker 3: that's a different conversation To the first point, what was
- 1:49:23Speaker 3: his first question?
- 1:49:25Speaker 1: What's more important in the McDaniels offense, left guard or center?
- 1:49:29Speaker 3: I would probably say left guard because the quarterback handles
- 1:49:32Speaker 3: so much of the pre snap responsibilities that's typically on
- 1:49:35Speaker 3: the center in a offense. I just think guard is
- 1:49:40Speaker 3: inherently more valuable than center to begin with, because you
- 1:49:42Speaker 3: have a lot more one on one pass protection opportunities
- 1:49:46Speaker 3: versus that center, But even more so in a scheme
- 1:49:49Speaker 3: like this where the quarterback is the one calling the
- 1:49:51Speaker 3: protections and not the center, I think it even devalues
- 1:49:55Speaker 3: the center, maybe even a little bit more than what
- 1:49:57Speaker 3: it would in other systems. Sorry, David Andrews, don't any
- 1:50:00Speaker 3: disrespect to him or any guys that have played center here.
- 1:50:04Speaker 3: That's just how I personally feel about it. But I
- 1:50:08Speaker 3: could see Jared Wilson being good either spot, And we'll see.
- 1:50:12Speaker 3: Before we wrap up with the show here, Alex, I
- 1:50:14Speaker 3: do want to give kind of a couple more takes
- 1:50:17Speaker 3: on this game. On Sunday, there's a game that the
- 1:50:20Speaker 3: Patriots are playing. We normally do key matchups. I don't
- 1:50:23Speaker 3: know if we have time to do all the key
- 1:50:25Speaker 3: we did one with and Crosby we kind of covered
- 1:50:28Speaker 3: that as well. But what's just your general feelings going
- 1:50:31Speaker 3: into this game? Because for me, I think the more,
- 1:50:34Speaker 3: the most fascinating aspect of this game is coaching for
- 1:50:38Speaker 3: both teams. It's two brand new coaching staffs, Pete Carroll,
- 1:50:43Speaker 3: two overall rosters. Chip Kelly has not coached at this
- 1:50:46Speaker 3: level in a decade, so we have really no idea.
- 1:50:49Speaker 3: We could obviously go back and watch Ohio State, but
- 1:50:52Speaker 3: it's just really not the same thing at all. So
- 1:50:54Speaker 3: we have no real idea exactly of what an NFL
- 1:50:58Speaker 3: offense for Chip Kelly looks like the modern times here.
- 1:51:01Speaker 3: It's not gonna be Oregon in Philadelphia. I can tell
- 1:51:03Speaker 3: you that it's gonna be different. It's probably gonna be
- 1:51:06Speaker 3: less pace and slow down a little bit more. But
- 1:51:10Speaker 3: I think this game is gonna be one and loss.
- 1:51:12Speaker 3: And this is why I gave a slight edge to
- 1:51:13Speaker 3: the Patriots by in game adjustments, which once the game
- 1:51:17Speaker 3: declares and both sides and both sidelines sort of get
- 1:51:21Speaker 3: a feel for how the new staffs are coaching it
- 1:51:24Speaker 3: and how their base, you know, schemes and all that
- 1:51:27Speaker 3: good stuff. Once they have a good feel for that,
- 1:51:30Speaker 3: who blinks first right, who has the ability to adjust,
- 1:51:34Speaker 3: who has the ability to attack weaknesses, and all that
- 1:51:38Speaker 3: good stuff, I think is ultimately going to decide this game,
- 1:51:41Speaker 3: and I just have a little bit more faith from
- 1:51:43Speaker 3: that standpoint. And Vrabel and McDaniels because I've seen them
- 1:51:47Speaker 3: do it before and I think they're two of the
- 1:51:49Speaker 3: best at it on their respective sides of the ball.
- 1:51:51Speaker 3: Whereas Pete Carroll, Chip Kelly, I think those guys are
- 1:51:55Speaker 3: kind of do what you do sort of coaches, like.
- 1:51:57Speaker 3: They have their systems, they have their schemes, especially Carol
- 1:52:01Speaker 3: on defense. I don't view him as like a game
- 1:52:03Speaker 3: plan coach very much. So this is a really big
- 1:52:08Speaker 3: Week ones always an unknown, it's always a mystery box
- 1:52:11Speaker 3: of what exactly you're going to get. But what these
- 1:52:14Speaker 3: rosters being so different from the past, these coaching staffs
- 1:52:18Speaker 3: are completely new. This is the uh, this is Week
- 1:52:22Speaker 3: one on steroids, Like this is a complete mystery box
- 1:52:25Speaker 3: of what exactly that they're going to get. I have
- 1:52:27Speaker 3: faith in McDaniels, especially that he's going to be able
- 1:52:29Speaker 3: to adjust, though.
- 1:52:30Speaker 1: I think it's probably gonna be messy. It's probably gonna
- 1:52:32Speaker 1: be sloppy in Week one is the most unpredictable game
- 1:52:35Speaker 1: of the season. I think that the Raiders are probably
- 1:52:39Speaker 1: going to come right out and look I'm not saying
- 1:52:40Speaker 1: they won't throw to Bowers. But if I'm the Raiders,
- 1:52:43Speaker 1: I look at the Patriots up front, I test it,
- 1:52:45Speaker 1: and you know, you just use the top ten pick
- 1:52:47Speaker 1: on a running back. Oh, they're going to run the
- 1:52:49Speaker 1: I make them stop the run before I go to
- 1:52:51Speaker 1: anything else. That's what I do if I'm the Raiders.
- 1:52:54Speaker 1: So I think we're going to see a good amount
- 1:52:56Speaker 1: of ash and genty early. I think how the Patriots
- 1:52:58Speaker 1: handle that dictate the rest of the game. On the
- 1:53:00Speaker 1: other side of the ball, Like you said earlier, I
- 1:53:02Speaker 1: think we see the Patriots try to establish the run.
- 1:53:05Speaker 1: I think they ease Drake May into it. I think
- 1:53:07Speaker 1: they get him a couple of those layups before they
- 1:53:09Speaker 1: maybe start taking some shots down the field. I also
- 1:53:12Speaker 1: want to be surprised as they feature digs early and
- 1:53:14Speaker 1: get digs in rhythm. And you hear guys talk about
- 1:53:17Speaker 1: coming off a torn acl or any major injury, really
- 1:53:19Speaker 1: any significant missed amount of time, just how much it
- 1:53:22Speaker 1: helps to get into the rhythm right away and get
- 1:53:24Speaker 1: the ball right away, and get hit a couple times
- 1:53:26Speaker 1: right away, and just shake the cobwebs off and get
- 1:53:30Speaker 1: back in that familiar mindset, so you know, runs early
- 1:53:34Speaker 1: quick stuff to Diggs. I would love to see some RPOs.
- 1:53:38Speaker 1: You can mix the tulos in together. We'll see how
- 1:53:40Speaker 1: much we see that. One other thing I wonder about McDaniels,
- 1:53:42Speaker 1: I'm curious your thoughts on this. So just looking at
- 1:53:47Speaker 1: some of the colleges he visited last year, and we
- 1:53:50Speaker 1: ultimately don't know how much he took from everybody. But
- 1:53:54Speaker 1: one thing you're seeing more in college football now. That
- 1:53:57Speaker 1: is another thing I think is coming to the NFL
- 1:53:59Speaker 1: at some point when I think this is probably less
- 1:54:01Speaker 1: impactful in the NFL than it is in college because
- 1:54:03Speaker 1: the players are smarter. But well, you see college teams
- 1:54:06Speaker 1: do now it's not hurry up in the sense that
- 1:54:09Speaker 1: get to line, snap the ball quick, but teams will
- 1:54:12Speaker 1: no huddle. But then you get to the line and
- 1:54:15Speaker 1: you kind of all right, you make your checks, you
- 1:54:17Speaker 1: call to play at the line, so you still have
- 1:54:19Speaker 1: the signs on the sideline, right, Well, you're not gonna
- 1:54:21Speaker 1: have that in the NFL, but or college really in yeah,
- 1:54:24Speaker 1: they don't really have that anymorecause the headsets. But the
- 1:54:25Speaker 1: idea is like you don't just the headsets, you don't
- 1:54:28Speaker 1: huddle Yeah, so that the defense can't huddle and it
- 1:54:31Speaker 1: makes it harder for them to substitute or whatever. But
- 1:54:33Speaker 1: you're not rushing, You're still snapping the ball fifteen twenty
- 1:54:35Speaker 1: seconds left on the play clock. Drake May did some
- 1:54:37Speaker 1: of that at North Carolina. Yeah, and I feel like
- 1:54:40Speaker 1: with the offense they have and to help kind of
- 1:54:43Speaker 1: Drake May stay ahead of things and simplify things. You
- 1:54:45Speaker 1: force the defense to kind of declare a look and
- 1:54:48Speaker 1: stay in it. I wonder if we see some of
- 1:54:50Speaker 1: that from McDaniels, if not in this game, at some
- 1:54:52Speaker 1: point this season.
- 1:54:53Speaker 3: That's what I'm most looking forward to seeing from McDaniels
- 1:54:56Speaker 3: is he's so good at getting you trapped in personnel
- 1:54:59Speaker 3: on field that they like matchups against you. So like
- 1:55:02Speaker 3: let's say they put like three safety nickel out there,
- 1:55:06Speaker 3: and so Jeremy Chin is covering Pop Douglas in the slot.
- 1:55:09Speaker 3: What McDaniels will do is he'll go hurry up, he'll
- 1:55:11Speaker 3: go no huddle, and he won't allow you to substitute
- 1:55:13Speaker 3: because they just love the personnel that you have on
- 1:55:15Speaker 3: the field. And then the other things that he likes
- 1:55:17Speaker 3: to do is win with formations, like we're gonna put
- 1:55:20Speaker 3: a running back out wide, We're gonna put a full
- 1:55:22Speaker 3: back out wide, right, and we're able to figure out
- 1:55:25Speaker 3: man's own and then also find those matchups in the
- 1:55:27Speaker 3: middle of the field. So it's an exciting all around
- 1:55:31Speaker 3: time for you for the Patriots. But we got to
- 1:55:33Speaker 3: wrap up because Unfiltered is up next here at noon.
