- 0:41Welcome back to a hamster with a blunt penknife the Doctor Who
- 0:45commentary podcast that always changes all different people and
- 0:50that's good. But, you know, what Fraser, I
- 0:55will never forget who I used to be.
- 0:58When I talk to, you know, I don't know.
- 1:01The quote, you know, from the end of this, we'll come to it.
- 1:04Okay. It's a nice way of titled
- 1:06though. Oh, it's beautiful.
- 1:07So it's constrains talking about the episode Without talking
- 1:10about webisode is, well, everyone knows by now doing
- 1:13that. Yes, indeed don't say to you
- 1:17right now that the only reason I'm going back and watching this
- 1:21twice in one week because I've been doing the randomizer lately
- 1:24and it's a cruel beast and it gave me time of the doctor and
- 1:28the long game in succession. Yeah, that's an interesting
- 1:34random choice, but then it gave me the doctor's wife and I was
- 1:38very happy. Yes.
- 1:40So out of those three, we are for those who might not have
- 1:43watched listen and pay attention to what the clicking on.
- 1:46We are talking about Time of the Doctor of come full circle,
- 1:50Taxidermy. Yeah, we talked about the 11th
- 1:55Hour All of course I just know what I had not made that link.
- 1:59We've gone from the beginning to the end.
- 2:01Where have we started? Matt Smith's era and we are now
- 2:06going to wrap it up with the time of the doctor.
- 2:08Now, this was your choice, you choose this one.
- 2:12Yes. Well, because one I wanted to do
- 2:15more Matt Smith episodes because it is a truth universally
- 2:19acknowledged that there was a big black hole in the hamster
- 2:21schedules and that is the majority of Matt Smith's
- 2:24episodes and a lot of Peter Capaldi that So, the mafia and
- 2:28secondly is because I know that you quite like this one and you
- 2:34are very seductively persuasive, man.
- 2:38And so, I thought having a conversation with you about this
- 2:41one, you bring typically smart and do your dominators magic
- 2:46with me klaxon. And by the end of this, I'll
- 2:50love it. You got some work cut out for
- 2:52you that I'll tell ya. Yes.
- 2:54You're not a fan of this one or you know, No.
- 2:57No. So, for the benefit of those
- 3:01Daft people out there that haven't listened to your other
- 3:04podcast on Doctor, Who the name on to be bruised.
- 3:07Oh, yes, we do nothing. The dominators episode.
- 3:09That's particularly good. That's a good one.
- 3:11Yeah, I think you had a quite good guest on that one and but
- 3:15you also did the trial of Steven Moffat oi5, our epic across two
- 3:22episodes. Did you get through all that?
- 3:25I'll go through all that. Yeah.
- 3:26God bless you, where your lovely co-host, Jack was defending,
- 3:32Steven Moffat and you were Prosecuting and you introduced a
- 3:37bit of evidence which was basically the whole basis of
- 3:41your case was based around one particular story and you said
- 3:46this story because got all the things I am going to dislike
- 3:51about Steven Moffat and he's waiting and he Sera.
- 3:54And this is just going to be You know, build my case around this
- 3:58one story. What was the soldiers?
- 4:00That Fraser? What was it?
- 4:01What was it? Ho, ho.
- 4:02Are you marking time with the doctor?
- 4:04It was during the doctor. Yeah.
- 4:08Yes. When you say yes, and I still do
- 4:11not disagree with that point. That this does have every
- 4:15insulting Trope of the mafia era that I dislike all jammed into
- 4:19one Chris, festive, special? Yeah.
- 4:23So that's going to be interesting to talk about Mmm,
- 4:27or we never done a Christmas special before, have we not
- 4:30know. So, I've got a double whammy
- 4:32question for you. But one, where does this fall in
- 4:36your new series? Regeneration episodes, sort of
- 4:40ranked wise and to, where does this fall when your Christmas
- 4:44special ranking? Whoo, wait, we'll start with
- 4:48Christmas because that's possibly a little bit easier to
- 4:51probably middle middle of the stack of the sky.
- 4:58I've just listened to you in Jack discussing the husbands of
- 5:01River Song. Hmm and you made a very good
- 5:05point now which very one percent agree with in that which is that
- 5:08the Steven Moffat Christmas specials are better than the
- 5:13Russell. T Davies Christmas specials
- 5:15because Steven Moffat Christmas specials, are Christmas.
- 5:18Yeah specials. Where was Rusty's our specials.
- 5:23That just so happened to be set at Christmas.
- 5:26Elements. But they are key Embraces
- 5:27Christmas for, for good or for ill for good last Christmas for
- 5:33ill. You know what?
- 5:35Yes, the Widow and the Wardrobe. We'll get there, we'll get
- 5:39there. Yes, so, and for me, obviously,
- 5:43doctor the Widow and the Wardrobe is top of the pale for
- 5:45that followed by husband. What is your favorite Christmas
- 5:48special? Yeah.
- 5:51What was in the water? Yeah, I was for you a bit
- 5:52strange but also we are working on this.
- 5:55Ville. It's just it is a proper
- 5:58Christmas special though. It's you know, when you when you
- 6:00talk about like a Christmas special, if you go back to like
- 6:04when you were growing up and Christmas specials were proper
- 6:06thing, you know, even before they had at Morecambe and wise
- 6:09Christmas special, it was a sure what it was special.
- 6:13There was some expression about things like Only Fools and
- 6:16Horses it will be like special so we take the truck doesn't
- 6:19like take that in Miami or something like that it would be
- 6:21like the same sure but special something special about it and I
- 6:25think Dr. Widow and the Wardrobe fits that bill really well
- 6:29because it's, you know, it's the doctor with without Rory, and
- 6:33Amy, or a company, or one of the noble companions.
- 6:37I well, that's a relief. Yeah, stop it.
- 6:40And put into, you know, a Christmassy situation and, you
- 6:46know, the story happens. And it's it's just a little bit
- 6:48more specialist got on my favorite scenes in the whole of
- 6:50Doctor Who in it. Always, well, I look forward to
- 6:52doing that one with you because I really love that episode as
- 6:55well. So I'm sure.
- 6:55You'll bring a lots of positive thing.
- 6:58Have you ever seen invasion of the dinosaurs?
- 7:00Yes. If you seen that bit where the
- 7:02doctor puts like 15 sugars in his tea and drinks it, that's
- 7:06how I feel when I watch Doctor. We're done the Wardrobe.
- 7:08You know, the my teeth are rotting.
- 7:10How saccharin is anyway? So what about what Generations
- 7:14Christmas you want chocolate? The Christmas you want sweets?
- 7:16You want sugar plums, and they sent me time to piss are
- 7:19genuinely fell asleep. When that was on, it's a first
- 7:22time. The only time I've ever fallen
- 7:23asleep in the Doctor Who episode I ought to know which one I fell
- 7:27asleep. God having sex.
- 7:31Nope. Is it Moffat?
- 7:33All rusty Davis. It's Moffat.
- 7:35Is that Moffat script? Oh, sleep.
- 7:40No more. That's the one.
- 7:41Ah, how do I really are you in here?
- 7:44Yes. Yes.
- 7:45I dropped off watching that one. Go on First Watch Every boring.
- 7:49Well, what about in terms of regeneration stories of the new
- 7:52series em, saw it either comes open.
- 7:55As fibers and others. Five.
- 7:57Don't know what power does. Another ways, right?
- 8:00Partner ways, entertain type of the doctor twice upon a time and
- 8:07probably the doctor. If I was going to rank them, I
- 8:10would say How will the doctor number one by far the best I
- 8:17wouldn't disagree? Oh no, wait.
- 8:19Oh no. That's our say part of the
- 8:20doctor's. Number one partner the ways on
- 8:22the ways. Okay.
- 8:25Suppose it up to number one and then comes Either end of time,
- 8:31all Time of the Doctor. Wow, very very similar and
- 8:37unusual opinion. Do you acknowledge that?
- 8:40Yeah, that is an unusual opinion because up all that people
- 8:42really Rea time with the doctor or the end of time.
- 8:46I think I mean both of these are setting out to do something very
- 8:51specific. So both End of Time and Time of
- 8:54the Doctor are setting out to do some.
- 8:55It really specific which is to see their doctor off.
- 9:00I'm glad to see, you know how the doctor is doing that as
- 9:03well. And close it a lot better in my
- 9:06opinion, I think partner of the ways.
- 9:09It's got a lot of issues. In terms of the plot, the script
- 9:15I would Say, as a two-parter sort of like bad wolf and part
- 9:20of the ways, I think the first sort of half an hour is what we
- 9:24disposable. And I love it though.
- 9:27And I think the last 10 minutes is just, you know, everything in
- 9:31between don't get as long as solid gold and it's solid, you
- 9:34have to be schooled, bad will Pile in a way that's in my top
- 9:3820, dr. Crews are absolutely fucking a
- 9:41door that so that's that's an interesting opposing view, ISO.
- 9:45So, you don't even hired me doctor.
- 9:50And what's next? And so part of the ways and Then
- 9:55followed up with twice upon a time.
- 9:57That's right at the bottom. Yep.
- 9:59Yes. Bit.
- 10:00But nothing in it, that one. I mean it's It's it's harmless,
- 10:06it is in its but you can tell, it's just kind of like a bullet
- 10:10on story at the end. It's you know that Peter
- 10:15Capaldi's doctor should have went with the doctor falls.
- 10:18That was the perfect opportunity for him and the plan as well.
- 10:22Wasn't it? And yeah, yeah but then
- 10:26obviously, Steven Moffat had to come up with another story.
- 10:30So it's very much the sort of like appendix as it were to, to
- 10:35the tail of this of the Twelfth Doctor.
- 10:40And for all that, you know, one element of a Story shouldn't
- 10:44distract you from everything else is really hard to get over
- 10:47the characterization of the first dr.
- 10:49Heiss out what you need is a jolly good smack bottom.
- 10:52All right well you need to make that joke once and then just
- 10:55drop it. You know the fact I think in
- 10:58terms of misremembered back characterization that's probably
- 11:02the most famous example. He was never an old-fashioned
- 11:07grumpy old was he was so Charming as well.
- 11:11And you are, there was For element 2 of them.
- 11:14You see it in sort of like the center rates.
- 11:15Where was very, I wanted to be very controlling over.
- 11:18Susan, you know, you see it with the infamous Spock bottom Lane
- 11:21in in sort of like the Dalek invasion of Earth.
- 11:24So the was that element we Scout up but that wasn't his whole
- 11:26character. What about the chase awful
- 11:28noise. I could charm the birds from the
- 11:30trees, you know? Yeah, you know things I got, you
- 11:34know, things like these the how he is in the Romans and sort of
- 11:37the space museum. That is that's a much better
- 11:41sort of representation of how the first There was.
- 11:43But Moffat seems just to be horning in on that one.
- 11:48One element of his character, which is a, which is a misstep.
- 11:53So, yeah, things just don't write quite come together in
- 11:56that one for me, in the same way that the do win the other ones.
- 12:00But before we try and dissect, this can I just briefly explain
- 12:07why I dislike this so much You shock is willing to be done by a
- 12:13certain time. Remember about you is because I
- 12:19really don't like this everything but the kitchen sink
- 12:22approach and it's too too late. Even a novel by Dave Stone.
- 12:28Have you heard of it? I don't think I have driver the
- 12:31new adventures and he wrote for the BBC books.
- 12:33And I always used to say his books are too too because in
- 12:36there too funny, too. Witty too, silly to everything's
- 12:39taken to an absolute. Yeah, I feel like that's what
- 12:43happens here and that Moffat approach of trying to distract
- 12:47you, every like minute or so, with something new without
- 12:52actually building a coherent story or if it is coherent, it
- 12:58doesn't feel it because you're being dragged in 500 directions.
- 13:01I feel like it reaches its nadir here and he's got so much he
- 13:06wants to do because he's got a tie up Matt Smith because he
- 13:08wants a fresh slate for Peter. D.
- 13:11So he's literally got a tie up. A load of Arc elements, I would
- 13:15say unsatisfactorily, but in the same breath that he wants to
- 13:18tell an epic story. So, he froze in the Daleks and
- 13:21the Cybermen and the angels and the sontarans.
- 13:23And, and there's a shopping list goes on and on, and on, and the
- 13:26cylons, and everybody. But he also wants to tell an
- 13:29intimate story, so he's got the doctor on Christmas and that's
- 13:33why he's doing that. But he also wants to tell a
- 13:34comedy story. So he's got Clara popping in
- 13:37trying to cook a Christmas dinner at the same time and it's
- 13:39just for me, it's just too. March.
- 13:42I'm just like any one of those stories would have been fine.
- 13:46And Yea, that Rusty Davis idea and he didn't do either, because
- 13:49the end of time is on self-indulgent mess as well.
- 13:52I love in the time part 2, but it is self-indulgent.
- 13:56That idea that he was originally going to have of telling a
- 13:58really simple regeneration, story on a spaceship would just
- 14:01look like a family. Yeah, I was like, that would be
- 14:04so refreshing after all the these regeneration stories that
- 14:08are bloated and arsenic, Ian, I'll get it into this.
- 14:12I'm just exhausted. Oh, yeah.
- 14:15That's the two types of regeneration.
- 14:17Story isn't the? No, No, that we've had the, the
- 14:20new series. There's, you know, the doctor
- 14:22gets out of trouble every time. Every story, dr.
- 14:26Getting in trouble doctor gets out of trouble until such time
- 14:29as you don't want the doctor to get over trouble and you need a
- 14:33new doctor. So that's when the doctor
- 14:34doesn't get out of trouble. But when, you know, he falls off
- 14:37the The radar or when he when you get enough but milk, but
- 14:42one, you know, that's, that's the just like a normal story
- 14:46which just so happens to have a regeneration.
- 14:48At the end thing I'm thinking is like, look up, listen kids,
- 14:53there's Bonnie or good kind of force, not a woman that ball.
- 14:59You got the other one, which is the Epic sort of the doctor is
- 15:03leaving. Now tank the doctor where they
- 15:05are the whole story is kind of building up to this.
- 15:08This moment at the end. So I think for this one that's
- 15:12the story that Moffat wanted to tell, you know, he's interests.
- 15:15That's the story not to the only stories only interested in, you
- 15:19know, building the eleventh doctor up to a particular moment
- 15:25where, you know, he dies the hero as your diet.
- 15:28You can, we generate being the hero.
- 15:31So I think that's the story that he's, he's trying to tell the
- 15:35way you go about it, you know. Because he's got an hour to get
- 15:39there. So the plot is very thin.
- 15:42It is just literally the doctor in a village, you're trying to
- 15:46get to that end. So, the elements that he throws
- 15:48in the hole, Things with Daleks and Cybermen and silence.
- 15:54And everything is just, it's, it's the gravy, really.
- 15:58It sort of like meat potatoes is, you know, the doctor
- 16:03sacrificed himself for the villagers or whatever.
- 16:05But, you know, the gravy that we get to keep us going to.
- 16:08That point is sort of the comedy bits with Clara and look fancy
- 16:13bit up. We are going to discuss very
- 16:14soon. People are promise what we will
- 16:16we will price of what I'm going to do as well is because I've
- 16:21Lost you to a point where I can't put this out, but we're
- 16:23having some internet issues and it's my end and I think it's
- 16:26because his uncle's downstairs. So, I'm going to get my phone
- 16:29and hope my data to the computer because I think that's going to
- 16:32give us a clearer signal. So give me just one second and
- 16:35I've got one quick point and maybe we'll go in all right.
- 16:54Why do this making a personal quite sparse painful?
- 16:58Oh yes, Yes, actually, it's already, it's already there.
- 17:06Oh man, I'm really enjoying this.
- 17:08Okay, but the time, where am I Joe?
- 17:11Joe? Joe, Joe.
- 17:12Joe Joe's phone. No.
- 17:20Lots of water, okay? There's a guy that's actually
- 17:33already looks a bit sharper. That really looks them to.
- 17:37Hey, I'm usually powered by them grow and I do these but oh, I
- 17:40love them as you love, leave until he's at work.
- 17:46I was gonna say, okay, okay. But and yeah, and I think that
- 17:51is my problem is is he's has got a feeling our so if you go
- 17:55through a lot of fluff I personally don't find it very
- 17:59funny any of it and it's all quirks.
- 18:02And you know me I don't like all these Eric works at what he does
- 18:06old. I think he can be incredibly
- 18:08focused and he's a genius writer and I said this and husbands are
- 18:12in the summer when his area. He is.
- 18:14King brilliant. He's a brilliant, brilliant
- 18:17writer. And when he's self-indulgent,
- 18:20it's just a bit of a mess and the biggest problem with Time of
- 18:26the Doctor is it comes after Day of the Doctor, which is such a
- 18:29beautifully honed squares. It is plotted to the hill there.
- 18:35Our to work is exceptional, and I think series 7v suffered
- 18:41because a lot of time went in today.
- 18:43They are the doctor was the script he had to get, right?
- 18:45This was a script yet. I'd be singing You cast around
- 18:48the world and seen by everybody. This is that where is energy
- 18:52needed to be? And basically, this is a Drake's
- 18:55of his creativity and energy after they are the doctors been
- 18:59done. But odds are, if you think this
- 19:03is a strong that I will disagree, On that policy?
- 19:05No, no, it's it. I wanted to strong as Day of the
- 19:08Doctor but I think you know, the dregs is a bit Accord agree with
- 19:13our can't agree that there's you know there is still a few good
- 19:17sort of fresh ideas in here. I would do anything to get an
- 19:20orphan 55 reference into a story.
- 19:22You know. He lab previous.
- 19:25We should we should we watch the thing and see how we get off?
- 19:28Yes, go on. Then otherwise, we'll be here
- 19:30all day if there's anyone, you know that I'd I'd rather Agree
- 19:35with our haven't found them yet, you know?
- 19:37Yeah. 5, 4, 3, 2 1. Let's go.
- 19:52Did you know I love this sound. They opens wave.
- 19:55It's great. Isn't it?
- 19:56Whoop soon as I listened is sort of like hasn't about your neck
- 20:00stand up and you're like hmm. So where do you rank this then
- 20:04in terms of regeneration specials it's my least favorite
- 20:10regeneration story of unit series, and Is my second least
- 20:17favorite Christmas special after to talk to her which out in the
- 20:20water. Oh it's all right.
- 20:23Are we done this before with all the spaceships coming together?
- 20:27I'll swear. We did this over Stonehenge.
- 20:29Once we did yes this is like this is it walking into the
- 20:36Dalek ship of the Dalek I stalk. Oh, an immediate right?
- 20:40We get introduced to handles and I think that's the best of this
- 20:44episode because the one emotional be that are really
- 20:48felt when I watched this last week was when handles expires
- 20:52are no, that's so sad, isn't it? So yeah.
- 20:56So what we just repeating things then do you think?
- 20:59Well, I don't know. It's either him sort of looking
- 21:02back and saying, right, let's celebrate everything we've done.
- 21:05Maybe I'll I'm so I'm being kind there or is He's a is that our
- 21:10ideas a bit and he's just he wants to go for the Epic.
- 21:13So he's like right? Well let's bring in every Doctor
- 21:15Who Monster again, you know. Sometimes tell her little
- 21:19slitheen. There was anyone.
- 21:22I swear this isn't the line even in pandorica, opens, doesn't she
- 21:25say that she's a? Oh my God.
- 21:27They're all amassing around Stonehenge, she lists a load of
- 21:31classic series monsters. I think it's fine.
- 21:34I think it's it is, it does give that sort of epic.
- 21:38Epic feels a bit of like, shorthand for for epic, isn't
- 21:41it? You know, it was good.
- 21:42Hard bite em. We got the pandorica.
- 21:45What hard? Daleks and Cybermen.
- 21:48I got that but we hadn't had any other.
- 21:52Kind of monster in its with anybody throws, all of them out
- 21:55there and Daleks and Cybermen in autons.
- 21:59So I thought it was beautifully done in the pandorica.
- 22:01Opens are still think that's one of his best episodes in terms of
- 22:05like culminating a season I think pandorica a open.
- 22:08This is probably our best it. But here it just I'm going to
- 22:16keep saying the word. Indulgent I think Joe I do like
- 22:20his costume in serious. Bay.
- 22:23I love his costume in series 5, that sort of ramshackle.
- 22:26Look, he had like like the little boy dressing like an old
- 22:29man and failing display now. The Americans are watching and
- 22:33he's all very tailored, I think it's fine.
- 22:37I think it's as I see what you mean.
- 22:39You know, it's it's, you know, is if you put lake trout in a
- 22:43dinner suit was in it. Yeah, you did lose a little bit
- 22:47of swimming, but he needs to go back in the Rough and Tumble
- 22:49machine. Danny, I think you When you see
- 22:52him in, you know, it's introduced in the snowmen.
- 22:55You know, when you have that that Feel that that's how we
- 23:00dress and he's dressing appropriately for the time.
- 23:02You know, he's got he's crumpled top hat and he's got the
- 23:06waistcoat and tie into the shirt and whatnot.
- 23:09And, you know, when he goes into the Tardis and we see that the
- 23:14new Tardis interior the first time you see the full sort of
- 23:17effect of that of a new Tardis new suit.
- 23:20I think that really works have such a lovely Christmas.
- 23:23Why are we watching that one in the state that bit where they go
- 23:25up the staircase? Into the clouds is just Awful.
- 23:29Now look, we're already repeating the gags here, we've
- 23:32had him going into a Dalek ship with a bit of Dalek.
- 23:35Now he's got into a sideman ship with a Cyberman head.
- 23:39Why we're still good guard? Why repeat a terrible gag?
- 23:45You think that's a flaw of Steven Moffat straight in there
- 23:47night. Does tend to repeat himself a
- 23:50bit. Yeah, and no, because I think
- 23:52sometimes he takes ideas that haven't quite worked and he
- 23:56perfects them sometimes and other times I think he takes
- 24:00ideas that he's already done really well and it's also What
- 24:04would you say was a good example of a perfect?
- 24:06In an idea. Oh my words.
- 24:10But I'm but I'm but I'm but I'm gonna let me come back to you.
- 24:12I'll have to delve into my into my brain and think about that.
- 24:17I mean, I feel like like the sort of non linear narrative.
- 24:24I feel like that just got a bit tiresome after a while.
- 24:27I think he probably got it as best in the pandorica opens and
- 24:30the big bang that sort of jumping about all over the
- 24:34place. Well that was the beauty of that
- 24:36it was it wasn't just jumping about all over that place.
- 24:39It was jumping about the whole place.
- 24:41It was jumping about the whole series and whatnot.
- 24:46I think, for me, it is a bit of a bit of a problem.
- 24:49Because we do see things like how we treated the Daleks way,
- 24:54Is called the Daleks alone what he's trying to do.
- 24:57I think he's that interested in adults not, he's bothered.
- 25:00Always tries to do parliament's and things like that and he's
- 25:03psychology to the Dalek but none of it really sticks.
- 25:06Does it? Now, you would think that I
- 25:10would absolutely love a sequencing.
- 25:12Matt Smith in the bath. Yeah.
- 25:15That's what destructed, is there.
- 25:16Because I remember when I was watching our the last week, and
- 25:19I'll just have my hand on my eyes, go do, what is this?
- 25:21And then later on, he does Matt Smith ball, doesn't he?
- 25:25It's like how many quirky things can either do it itself?
- 25:30I think this team is just brilliant.
- 25:31I love this scene where You know, that's the way that the
- 25:37rest of the car stopped playing and the fact that the doctors in
- 25:40the nip but you've got your clothes on, is he worried a week
- 25:42in this alleifer? This webinar begin this?
- 25:44Yes. Although through all the way
- 25:46through because you dare, she went to Genesis.
- 25:51Hey why? I like this scene.
- 25:52She reads in it and I think shooter he's wonderful.
- 25:55And boy, oh boy, a Moffat, gave a shit about the families of his
- 25:58companions and I know he weren't doing that and that's fair
- 26:01enough, but she could have been amazing.
- 26:04Sheet of regret. Yep.
- 26:07Because she's a great actress, I can't help, but notice the
- 26:11flowers. Dad is played in pure neighbors
- 26:13style played by a completely different actor.
- 26:15That's when we saw him about five episodes ago, what happened
- 26:18there? Well, you stop receptacle order.
- 26:21A little bit of the knee and overhead for her.
- 26:25First dad was super hot. Hmm.
- 26:30Yeah, that would be again. People get people get old and
- 26:35they got played by different actors.
- 26:37Can't say enough. A no, no, that's quite a few
- 26:39things that annoy me in this, but I don't know.
- 26:40All the facts as well that we've got things have changed for
- 26:43Clara. But there's no kind of
- 26:46acknowledgement that things have changed.
- 26:48So she wears Andy and Gene. Artigue on.
- 26:50Why doesn't she nannying anymore?
- 26:52Why she suddenly a teacher? Like, none of this is not.
- 26:54We're just supposed to just sort catch up.
- 26:56You know, every time we see her because it's not important at
- 26:58the store, Free, but it's more to the character, but the story
- 27:02is about the doctor. Not Clara.
- 27:05It's and I thought that there's some emphasis on Clara and this
- 27:08is name is there is I mean car was important but ultimately
- 27:12with the story that were telling in this episode is the doctor,
- 27:17it's the end of the eleventh doctor.
- 27:20And there is this point coming up where we are going to be
- 27:23potentially shoehorn and plot elements in where we are going
- 27:26to be like wrapping up things in.
- 27:29And what not and you know, this episode comes in for criticism
- 27:33because of that. So do you think perhaps if we
- 27:36did have more of Clara into, you know, while yacht in and you've
- 27:39gone off to college now and blue, but would that not also
- 27:42fit into that category of? You know, wrap it up too much in
- 27:46one go. Oh, maybe though, I would like
- 27:48those explanations as those things here in the previous
- 27:51episodes of just like, oh yeah, I'm not a nanny anymore.
- 27:54I'm working in the school now. You know, I've only had two more
- 27:56episodes since then, if you think nightmare cell Vehicles
- 27:59into the name of the doctor, goes into the Day of the Doctor
- 28:02goes, into this wall on. So we haven't in the in the Arc
- 28:07of the Season had that opportunity to then You know.
- 28:12And I just was like, every time I saw her, I was like, hang on
- 28:15what I thought she was a nanny, like I thought she was living
- 28:19in. Oh, she's got her own house now.
- 28:21What's got you know? Yeah, so but like in series, I I
- 28:26think he realizes Ashley, he hasn't won the other sketch, no
- 28:29character particularly well to, he hasn't been explaining what's
- 28:32going on in her life very well. So suddenly we get this very
- 28:35condensed character Arc of her, me and Danny pink, and it is all
- 28:39explained. And you know what?
- 28:40I like it a lot better. Like a lot better it is.
- 28:44I kind of think we need to get the context, you know, we are
- 28:48watching this on the 30th of January to 2023.
- 28:54So this came out, I can't believe you have to look at the
- 28:56year then. I know, you know, this is so
- 29:00we're taking it to kind of You know, nine years.
- 29:05After this has been, I do not like nine years after this has
- 29:08been broadcast. We're sitting down, watching it
- 29:10individually, okay? When we'll watch the first time,
- 29:14we would have had the whole series 7 be Arc.
- 29:18Leading up to this point. So we would have had how many
- 29:21episodes it it up Assad's. Yes.
- 29:23Not many. Yeah.
- 29:24So it's not many. We don't really have much time
- 29:27to set up a Clara that is going to pay off in this episode.
- 29:31Well, because of what you remember, the whole thing about
- 29:33Syria 7B was she was the impossible, girl, an epic
- 29:36history. I couldn't tell anything about
- 29:37who basically written as generic companion.
- 29:41Yeah. Absolutely.
- 29:42Sauces. She's a plot Point more than
- 29:44anything in in 7B. But having said that there is
- 29:48Is, you know, elements of our current.
- 29:50I go in there and, you know, you have the start of rings of
- 29:53akhaten where she would get her back story with her.
- 29:55Mom and dad are the old dad. I was, it were not the new one
- 29:59will get here. It was all the I'm getting
- 30:01confused and so we too have things kind of sprinkled about
- 30:05and I know obviously if this was It was all T, Davies series.
- 30:11That would be emphasized a lot more and would have a lot more
- 30:14element of that. But maybe I've just got used to
- 30:16that approach. And that's a big one preferred
- 30:18approach or that's the problem, I think.
- 30:21Well, I think that depends again on.
- 30:23What story you want to, do you want the story of the companion
- 30:26and their family in there and how the how that relates with
- 30:31the doctor or do you want the story of the doctor in?
- 30:34How he relates with these companion?
- 30:36I mean, in the pile of the ways is every bit.
- 30:38Roses story as it is. The doctors even though is Chris
- 30:41Rock Wilson's. Last Story, the emphasis is as
- 30:44much on Rose and I actually would have preferred this if we
- 30:48were following Jenna Coleman a bit more than we were following
- 30:52the doctor. It's one of us, isn't it?
- 30:57Is it is for me I think that wouldn't work nearly as much
- 31:00because like you said we haven't got enough of Clara for that to
- 31:04be interesting. You know, when we get to part of
- 31:06the ways, you know the good bit of partner the way is is when
- 31:10you know, the doctor thinks that Rose has been Zapped by the
- 31:13Android. You know, what his reaction to
- 31:15that and then roses reaction to being left behind by the doctor
- 31:18and having the kind of Jesus that is of gold.
- 31:21That is drop dramatic. Yeah.
- 31:24Sequence. Yes, that's kind of that works
- 31:28because we've had sort of 12 weeks building up to that of the
- 31:31Doctor and Rose and their relationship.
- 31:33You know, we don't have enough of that.
- 31:35I think for Cara for this to be a club eccentric episode and I
- 31:39don't think Moffat wants to tell them.
- 31:41No, he doesn't. He wants to write Doctor.
- 31:43Who about the dog, sir? There's only like that.
- 31:46Is this thing? Can I?
- 31:47What? He's also given us those
- 31:51elements of Clara though, because, you know, it could just
- 31:53Be okay. Everything happens on
- 31:55trenzalore. But no, we do get back to Earth
- 31:57and we do see Clovis, funny and we have a lovely scene coming up
- 32:01with them. The Stepmom where she has just
- 32:04been a an atrocious person. She's an enormous thing
- 32:07character though in. She like, she's actually I think
- 32:11Shay. Yeah.
- 32:12But, you know, you getting that sort of interaction, you have
- 32:16liked the bit, the little be seen with, with an aunt Elena.
- 32:21How she met her husband and When the Phantom's back into our
- 32:26water, when Danny pink dots, just for that one scene is the
- 32:30one point where I really felt that Clara had like a connection
- 32:36with her family. Is such a big theme.
- 32:39Yeah, yeah. And let's it's not the focus of
- 32:42Moffat Storyteller in the focus is very much more productive and
- 32:45you know, if I'm honest like more, I do think he does focus
- 32:49more on the plot. The Nick I know he can do good
- 32:51character work but he is more interested.
- 32:53In plots. Yes I think he's more of a plot
- 32:56driven Storyteller than a so that is absolutely going to
- 33:00determine how you approached his work whether you ever whether
- 33:04you're in his characters like me all over your in his plots like
- 33:08you. Yeah yeah I mean I think I mean
- 33:13I wouldn't say I'm not interested in code AS but you
- 33:15know it's about how was your stunt hold your, tell your story
- 33:18to your, tell your story through Claudia tell them through
- 33:20characters you know you can't do what I mean.
- 33:23Stay visible approved. You can do both both approaches
- 33:26work and can be successful, too sir, two more lesser degrees.
- 33:31I mean, you know, you'll hear me time and time.
- 33:33Again, complain about is deal sending University Davies story
- 33:39because that really does kind of take me out, you know, when
- 33:42we'll get to that. Do you think there was a better
- 33:44way of wrapping this up? But then you'll hear me complain
- 33:47about terrible, Steven Moffat season-ending like read full
- 33:52tesselecta twist in wedding of River Song or Dreadful hybrid
- 33:56twist, at the end of series 9, I like, well, all that build-up
- 34:01and promise for this. Like and we skipped entirely
- 34:06over a river song, clone Tasha, Lem who's been on the screen now
- 34:09for a while, played by the Fantastic actress, all a Brady.
- 34:13It's really a big Star Trek Picard.
- 34:15Yes, Planet. Irish Romulan ale.
- 34:17She's fabulous in that. You know, she was flirting away
- 34:20with Patrick Stewart. Well, I just think she is
- 34:23basically River Song in this. Yeah, I mean the one point she's
- 34:28very clearly with us or and that's the point where she does
- 34:31the thing that I really don't like people doing which is the
- 34:33TARDIS. Then wind the Tardis by the
- 34:37Tardis. Oh okay.
- 34:38Don't think that all this has plenty of know.
- 34:41I don't like going. I think the doctor flows the
- 34:43Tardis and whenever like a drink or total does it's like not me
- 34:48it's not your it's not your wheels you better hold on to
- 34:50your hat Fraser Greek. So that's a something
- 34:52complimentary About Time of the Doctor.
- 34:54Well that's not much as I do. Like the shopping list of
- 34:57monsters that are in this and I do think it self-indulgent.
- 34:59I do think this sequence with the angels is very well filmed
- 35:02and the fact that it's a new way of doing it in the snow in that
- 35:06their vision is obscured. Unfortunately, I still think I
- 35:09think there could have been a whole story around this as well.
- 35:13Don't think the could to be honest are you could do the
- 35:15angels in the in a snowy setting.
- 35:17It won't really isn't snow said, yeah, you could you not this
- 35:20story. I don't think this story.
- 35:22I don't think it could have just the angels in this story.
- 35:26I want to get your perspective on something.
- 35:28That was said to me yesterday by The Marvelous, Luke Malloy, as
- 35:31we watched a load of Steven Moffat episodes.
- 35:33And so in his opinion, I do agree with him.
- 35:36That Rusty Davis is making television for the masses and
- 35:40Steven Moffat is making television for Doctor Who fans.
- 35:44And I don't disagree with that assessment.
- 35:47And I think this is a really good example of that, all of
- 35:52these monsters, all of this Arc, stuff like it.
- 35:56It feels and it feels to me like 80s Doctor Who just a ton of
- 36:00continuity lumped on, and I can see why people got a bit tired
- 36:05of it. Everyone is, as we sort of move
- 36:07on. Yeah, I don't get me wrong,
- 36:08there's still Innovation. There's tons of it and fuck me.
- 36:11There is ambition. I think he's the most ambitious
- 36:14writer Doctor Who's ever had. Yeah, I think that's a very good
- 36:18point from Luke, and I can see why, And see where where that
- 36:23fits in. I think also you know and make
- 36:25sure in this at the minute that years very much Sherman, you
- 36:31know years is not just about let's put something on the
- 36:34television and make it good. He's very much about the brand
- 36:38and you know how that gets sold Nationwide and worldwide and you
- 36:43know he's in bed with Disney. Now, he's in bed with Sony, he's
- 36:46very you know, much he's talking his fingers on the pulse.
- 36:51Well, he's fingers on pies. It's in pies.
- 36:54London pregnancy that what I know where his fingers are.
- 36:57All right, stop it. That's where you belong.
- 37:03You know, he's got a spin-off spoons of that is very much.
- 37:06You know what he's about. He's he's not so much just about
- 37:09making Doctor Who for the masses.
- 37:11He's about as a Big Brand, and Steven Moffat, just for Doctor
- 37:17Who fans, I don't necessarily think just for fans, but I think
- 37:22what he does is he's looking out to reward the regular viewer.
- 37:28So not just the funny like me and you who were going to give
- 37:31up a mourner to come and sit and talk about Doctor Who.
- 37:33But, you know, he's he's looking to reward.
- 37:36The people who watched last year and the year before and, you
- 37:39know, Kind of building that up. So yes he's going to give us a
- 37:44episode where he's going to throw in a few Angels.
- 37:47He's going to throw in a few sontarans because he's trusts
- 37:50that the The viewing public are going to be on board with that
- 37:56and go. Oh, yes.
- 37:57Sontarans from last Christmas. That's the comedy potato from
- 38:01last Christmas in its of angels from from the before and that
- 38:06pitch that now. But I think you can also level
- 38:10that Russell T, Davies as well, because, you know, when he first
- 38:14started out, it was very much, you know, the cognitive elements
- 38:17were very much sprinkled Very good.
- 38:21He was, you know, yeah, you had autons and you had Daleks and
- 38:24that was it. You go into the second to use
- 38:27your have Daleks and you have Cybermen and that's it.
- 38:30You know, it's very just you know, new new new stories, new
- 38:35monsters so on and so forth. But you kind of get to the end
- 38:39though you get to the end of season 3 in the Masters coming
- 38:42back and that's a lot more for a casual viewer to take in.
- 38:46Who's the master whose we just take the time to reintroduce him
- 38:49to a new audience it does and he throws be throws in the sort of
- 38:53nuggets for the fans as well and then you get to the end of end
- 38:56of time and Gallifrey is coming back and it's all yeah Fraser
- 39:00Gary Russell's involved at that point of Is that point it is.
- 39:07It's very more fatty because you know, by that point, if you
- 39:10haven't, kept up with the last four years, you know, what's a
- 39:13Gala for you, w at a more, what's a Nightmare, Child?
- 39:15What's, you know, who's this? You know, this?
- 39:18I think I think the last series I think Rusty Davis celebrates
- 39:22what he created a in Journey's End the end of Journey's End is
- 39:26a successive number of scenes of characters that he has created.
- 39:32He's saying goodbye and that happens at the end of the end of
- 39:34time as well as I think in this, it ain't all this stuff that's
- 39:38built up throughout. The area is just yet, we'll
- 39:40throw the side men were throwing the Daleks will throw in the
- 39:42Angels were throwing the sontarans for friend you know so
- 39:45it is just continuity. I do wrong it's nice to see
- 39:48these monsters I guess. Yeah yeah I would I would say
- 39:51it's not continue what I think it is just the you know the
- 39:54steps on the journey to our main.
- 39:56Look at this. I'm sorry the sale of Rassilon
- 39:58from the five doctors Come on, talk about a deal.
- 40:02Dive that's for the fans. Are happy to give you that but
- 40:07at the sautee the same time. So is Roger, Delgado is voice
- 40:10when Derek Jacobi opens? Oh, marvelous pocket watch, you
- 40:15know there's the sprinklers, you know what about your all the way
- 40:18from metabolites free. But you know what Luke's point
- 40:26was there's nuggets like that all the way through.
- 40:28And I think there's there's nuggets all the way through
- 40:30Russell 0 as well in, that's That's the way to do it because
- 40:34you kind of go and, you know, something like this, you're a
- 40:37rascal God, no one's gonna watch this this.
- 40:38See, and going as well. So you have a salon.
- 40:40I don't trust about, and I'm not gonna watch this anymore and
- 40:43take these out. You, it's just it's an Easter
- 40:45Eggers and it more than anything else.
- 40:46It's hot stew restaurant in five doctors like your wife sit next
- 40:51to going, what, what the hell. But look excited without live
- 40:57Center. Moffett Ryan for Doctor Who fans
- 40:59was that he liked that approach because even though I've been
- 41:03slightly inaccessible for regular viewers and it did
- 41:07Hemorrhage viewers. As it went on, it meant it was
- 41:12pushing the show in, ambitious and interesting, and dark, and
- 41:16creative areas that perhaps it probably shouldn't have gone in
- 41:19but are worth absolutely worth discussing, like really
- 41:22substantial ideas and whereas Rusty Davis's time where he's
- 41:30doing things like I don't know, Agatha Christie.
- 41:32Pasty shoes and you know JK Rowling pastiches is absolutely
- 41:38accessible to the general audience and they lapped it up
- 41:41because it's all kind of stuff that's in the Zeitgeist that I
- 41:45can get behind. But perhaps it's a little more
- 41:48generic and less interesting to watch and discuss as a doctor
- 41:52who fan it was a really it was interesting.
- 41:55I don't disagree with them and I do think Moffat did he look kind
- 41:59of poked a torch into dark corners?
- 42:02Corners and things like that. I'm just not sure.
- 42:05I like what came scurrying out is all.
- 42:08I think I think Russell did as well.
- 42:10Russell, you know, and I've said this, you know, many many times
- 42:14before another podcast, another hamsters is that Russell is a
- 42:18drama writer and drama queen do it.
- 42:25Taking it back to sort of like, you know, the classic sort of
- 42:28Greek Theater. You know, you're hard to hold
- 42:31like Shakespeare, you have comedies, you have tragedies,
- 42:35you know, and Russell T, Davies is a tragedy writer is a drama
- 42:40writer. Steven Moffat is a comedy,
- 42:41right? And by that, I don't mean he's a
- 42:42sitcom writer that. He's, you know, he's just
- 42:44writing, got to guard what I mean is that, you know, when he
- 42:47is, so this is, what's the Lakes funny lines as well.
- 42:51Oh, my God. Sure.
- 42:53But the story that they are telling is very different as
- 42:56different as much as that the characters suffer under muscle
- 43:00and the don't under Moffitt. Are you kidding me right now?
- 43:04And Bill as massive old bloating though.
- 43:06She gets better, though. She's sure I heard the time.
- 43:10Yes. And then she gets a plastic
- 43:12chest, getting it was sober, man with massive Crow, go for a
- 43:16chest in. She gets better.
- 43:18Oh, no. That's why we can't take any
- 43:20serious and any danger in. this foot in this era in this is the,
- 43:24but this is how this is the story that moffatt's Talent is
- 43:27one will hear, you know, It's more of a happy ending, you
- 43:31know, if that was whistle, you know, you wouldn't work.
- 43:34First of all, you wouldn't put have that happen to these
- 43:37characters because you wouldn't want your characters a happy
- 43:40ending, you can, he gave Donna ultimately a happy ending with
- 43:44the lorries and all of that. No course he did in end of time.
- 43:48And anyway, she's coming back. He's going to correct that
- 43:50wherever you think about that? We'll see, we'll see what
- 43:53happens because all the MacGyver's.
- 43:55I think what you did with Donna was terrible.
- 43:58I think what he did was 10% of the population of the Earth was
- 44:00pretty awful in sound of drums. I mean, is a vicious bastard.
- 44:03Russell T. Sometimes the did get better
- 44:06though, so don't forget that. Well yeah, all right, yeah,
- 44:09that's fair but they did remember that's what I liked
- 44:11about that. Yeah.
- 44:12What you will do though is you know, the side characters will
- 44:17will suffer us all, you know I mean Donna suffers because Donna
- 44:22You know, ultimately knows the what's going to happen, she's
- 44:26going to have a memory wipe and she's going to stop being a nice
- 44:28person because she hasn't got a man in my life anymore.
- 44:30Oh, then that's a very particular reading of that
- 44:35season rules and suffers because she doesn't have the doctor so
- 44:40she's left in a temple and alternative Universe towards it.
- 44:43She's alive butchers, you know, should suffer went.
- 44:48Basically, you know, you look at the psycho dice or Kylie
- 44:51Minogue, I mean, He's me, you skit.
- 44:53Fry them off of. They made the choice to say.
- 44:55Oh, you fuck off. I'm going.
- 44:58Janna chance. It might be the bloody nor
- 45:00clock. Well, hey Marta, reactor, she's
- 45:03married to the character. What should be the Mickey then?
- 45:08It's very tricky, you know, it's just season one now, but
- 45:11everyone has been cancelled in it and again, your, is it
- 45:15intended for Martha? Isn't necessarily a happy
- 45:17ending. It's probably the happiest one.
- 45:19It's probably the best of the Indians that were get and which
- 45:24do you prefer these endings of Bill coming off as with a puddle
- 45:29and Clark, going off in a diner. I No, I don't know what to feel
- 45:33about those endings. I think you're, I mean that
- 45:38muscle does exactly the same with with doomsday, doesn't lie,
- 45:41because it all starts with You know, I almost told her in this
- 45:46is the story about the day I died.
- 45:47It's like you're not dying words.
- 45:48You don't die. Love doing it.
- 45:50I deny you, your boyfriend's took off your but that's not the
- 45:53same. And so there is that sort of you
- 45:57kill off, Danny pink and keep him dead.
- 46:00He did. He did he was so boring.
- 46:02We were all relieved about that. Do you posit we've skipped over
- 46:08huge swaths of this story will come back within two minutes.
- 46:12That's for, I think. What was Sean though?
- 46:14Thought, you know what, Steven, Moffat, and Russell, T, Davies,
- 46:17or because we're taught just about about whistle, as well,
- 46:20have Steven. And I think what that shows is
- 46:23that the are very, very similar Waiters Similar very similar,
- 46:28you know, they can write. I mean, this story for me is a
- 46:32very Russell story. It's got a lot of Russell T
- 46:36Davies beats in it. You know, the plot such as it is
- 46:39the story such as it is is about the characters.
- 46:43So it is about the doctor and it doesn't feel well.
- 46:46I think I would feel more Russell's, right?
- 46:48And this. Yes, but in terms of, you know,
- 46:51the story that's being told, it's a very personal story in
- 46:54which is, you know, the plot isn't as important as the
- 46:56characters are. In this particular story in,
- 47:00it's probably falling down for you because those characters
- 47:02aren't as well, fleshed out, but Stephen can do like a whole
- 47:07story and kill off, Danny pink. So you can do it here.
- 47:10We'll stop and do more sort of like, Steven Moffat, take Tails.
- 47:15You look like love and monsters where ultimately, you know, the
- 47:19are it gets sucked off by Paving slab.
- 47:21Exactly. You know, where, as in that
- 47:23instance, letting her go would have been the No option and wise
- 47:30marketer, you tried it. I do not try in that.
- 47:34You naughty not want, man. I'm sorry, but do you know any
- 47:38eggs in Paving slabs are though for you're going to be able to
- 47:42write what we missed, then what was this is welcome to
- 47:45Christmas. We've missed Tessa Peak Jones.
- 47:48We have yes. Radical wasted guest actor.
- 47:53No, no, no. In a very good scene, she's
- 47:59fabulous actress. So I want more.
- 48:03So would who would you rather cast in that ruling?
- 48:07Well, I'll give her one saying, if that's all she's getting but
- 48:10I'd rather she was in a whole episode.
- 48:13You know, I know and I have made this joke about wasting guest
- 48:16actors and are they get absolutely?
- 48:18He, you know, Michael Gambon Celia.
- 48:20Imrie he can. Yeah I'm great but he does like
- 48:25bringing in these button. Fabulous actors for these two
- 48:29seat, two minutes scenes. Well honey, I want more.
- 48:33That's the problem is I want you can get Talent, Get Talent, you
- 48:35know, rather than seeing or well Olivia Colman autistic Jones,
- 48:40whatever, Or Michael Sheen. You know, I'm just gonna get
- 48:45them to do a bit part, so I'm not going to bother because of
- 48:49the rules to small seems like actually, there's a rule, go and
- 48:52do it. Then I've got fantastic cast.
- 48:56We've had a series of comedy scenes now of monsters
- 48:59attempting to invade trenzalore, I do like the wooden Cyberman.
- 49:03That's quite nice guy s brilliant, isn't it?
- 49:05But the comedy sontaran sticking out of the snow, is not funny.
- 49:08It's, it's wearable. That's just racks in a nutshell.
- 49:14But yeah, what. Terrible it kind of comes back
- 49:18to this world by use Charming. It's an overuse at this point,
- 49:23we're getting things like structs just completely over
- 49:25used as an artichoke were once. So, we'll bring it back and
- 49:28we'll bring it back and we'll bring it back and we'll bring
- 49:30him back in by tiny. What this bit right over for a
- 49:33newspaper, at your red and you fell over, I'd laugh as well.
- 49:36It's I would as well. I think the you goes out on a
- 49:38high thankfully. Gets to that point where you
- 49:42just take a hot. Not what can I say though?
- 49:46I feel like the idea of the doctor saying I'm going to stay
- 49:50on Trends, lawn become an old man and yet these people that's
- 49:54very sweet and lovely and very dr.
- 49:56Ish. Absolutely.
- 49:57I like that. What I don't like is that it was
- 50:01he protecting that crack is he protecting Amy's crack?
- 50:04I can't remember. Now it's noise, he's protecting
- 50:06the tone because at the crack so nice to play with the kids and a
- 50:09puppet show are on the dock. That's all very lovely and
- 50:12Charming. What?
- 50:13I don't like is the Hideous and unconvincing old age makeup.
- 50:18They put Matt Smith in, where he looks absolutely ghoulish.
- 50:21Come, the end of the episode. Yes.
- 50:24Then I'll just I want to look at him and he's a pretty man.
- 50:28He looks all though, doesn't he? Oh, he looks all right.
- 50:31Oh, it's horrendous. But I did like these things
- 50:33between him and Clara and I thought I got actually feel a
- 50:36bit of warmth between the two of them in these things.
- 50:39Yeah. So yes that's quite nice.
- 50:42They go I can't do it. I've got quite a nice crack
- 50:45there, I don't work. So this is yes.
- 50:47Let's discuss Amy's crack. Let's talk about Amy's crack
- 50:50then. So we're having this, isn't it?
- 50:55Stop it. So this is this is the the
- 50:59element that's been involved but this is the wrapping up of Of
- 51:03stuff, isn't it? You know when we've got the
- 51:06crack in the wall coming back and we're trying to kind of
- 51:09explain what's behind the crack at what?
- 51:11That's all you know is this something that needed wrap it
- 51:14up? Did we need more cracking rocks?
- 51:18Probably not. But as he watched the moment
- 51:20where you see it, I got a tingle and that's because it just
- 51:25reminded me of all those fabulous moments in series 5,
- 51:29every time the crack appeared and you know, that's doing a
- 51:31rusty Davis. Ark.
- 51:33They're just a simple image of something.
- 51:36That's really creepy. It's not progressing throughout
- 51:39the season so reminded me of like happier times Yeah.
- 51:44But no. Do we did we need Amy's crack to
- 51:48open to such an extent that we'd get pixie dust from Gallifrey
- 51:52giving the doctor. But I mean, don't you be telling
- 51:55me I write for Doctor Who fans? It's a, he I mean, it all gets a
- 52:00bit much in their climax that it.
- 52:03Yeah, I mean, the bought the both waiting for the fans, I
- 52:05think I mean that's the question, then coming back to
- 52:09that then is you know should we be Boat the Casual viewer.
- 52:17There's a white. No, I don't think we need to now
- 52:20the streaming service because the numbers don't really matter
- 52:22anymore. They were just make dogs who
- 52:24because it's making them money. Yeah, at this look, we, yes, the
- 52:28BBC would cancel the show if it wasn't getting enough sleep,
- 52:32should we be worried then about popular Doctor Who or good
- 52:35Doctor? Who Good doctor who they sign
- 52:42it. If good doctor who's not
- 52:44popular, Is there a problem? That's a good question is as I
- 52:48say some of the most least popular moments in the show's
- 52:51history where the rate is have dived, I late McCoy and late.
- 52:57Patrick troughton. Yep, we've got the war games
- 52:59there, the cursor Henry. They're great showing the
- 53:01galaxies on the best stories live people show.
- 53:05Faced a chop on those occasions. Almost Yeah.
- 53:10Look at that. Special effect of them standing
- 53:12on top of that Bell Tower, that's really Dreadful.
- 53:17It's all models. Isn't it a lovely little model
- 53:19Village? It might suck asmus.
- 53:22It is a generally doesn't want to try things Jenna over there.
- 53:27Something else I love about this story as well.
- 53:28May, I say quickly and that is the music by Murray gold because
- 53:35I think the reprise of the long song at the end of this episode
- 53:38is absolutely gorgeous. Dr. Shepherd it's the price of
- 53:50the long song. I think.
- 53:52Yeah. Brilliantly at the end of the
- 53:53episode, but him the gallery theme as well.
- 53:57Hmm. When, when the pixie dust comes
- 53:59out of the crack in the sky or when the crack first appears as
- 54:02like, you know, that kind of chorus sing it.
- 54:07Yeah, that Marigold, he does get a bit samey and he's always
- 54:12good. But he does like reuse some cues
- 54:15as time goes on but I think when he needs to he can still knock
- 54:18it Connie again. It's you know, this is what you
- 54:21want from this story because this is end of the era.
- 54:25It's but this is the end of the year.
- 54:27Our story is not, the doctor gets out of trouble until you
- 54:30can't store. It's the end of the year, a
- 54:31story. So you want those Throwbacks you
- 54:33want. You know, you've had your Dalek
- 54:36sore throat but you know you've had Cybermen back again and
- 54:38you've hired a new Twist on them with the wooden Cyberman you've
- 54:40had the sontarans, you've had the Angels stands to reason.
- 54:43You're going to want those musical cues as well, that
- 54:45you're going to want. You know what, the fact that
- 54:48it's harking back to tenants time, rather than just as well,
- 54:52just adds a little extra little extra bit of gravy.
- 54:55Really. Mm-hmm.
- 54:56Hey, stockin, hear about the graves of all the people that
- 55:00you saved on trenzalore and all of this try to feel about any of
- 55:04this though, because I don't really know these people.
- 55:07And all I've seen is a quick Montage of clips and we've not
- 55:11really spent any great time with them.
- 55:13So, I'm just like, all right. You're trying to make me feel
- 55:16about people that I've got no investment in whatsoever.
- 55:20And that's, that's the trick of, of any of these stories, isn't
- 55:26it? Because, you know, you've got 45
- 55:28minutes, you've got an hour to try and make someone feel
- 55:31something about something. And that's where Russell is the
- 55:34king. You know, he will make you feel
- 55:36about Linda with a white and then I'll boy murder here.
- 55:39In fact, I still talking about her, you know, these years
- 55:41later, all these years later, And so it is we said he was a
- 55:45cruel Beast, don't worry? Yeah, it's difficult but it's,
- 55:49you know, it's part. And parcel of of the format
- 55:52unfortunate that you've only got x amount of time to set that up,
- 55:55and knock it down. And I ask you, is there such a
- 55:57thing as a Twist too far, because this bit in a minute.
- 56:00Now we're Tasha. Lem is revealed to have a Dalek.
- 56:04I still coming out of her for it and the whole of the church was
- 56:08under Dalek control. I'm like, what is going on now?
- 56:12Like what is this? No, I thought I think it's a
- 56:16good enough twists. I think if we need it, though.
- 56:19I thought the story was here. Why are we going up there?
- 56:23It's would advance in the pot a little bit, you know.
- 56:25Again you know what kind of we're going to tie up some a few
- 56:30loose ends. When I go up there we're going
- 56:31to have the whole explanation of The overhead that bit when we
- 56:37stop it. We're now I think it's in a
- 56:39minute. Is there where they sit around
- 56:40the table and talk about this? Now, I think it's now and she
- 56:46goes on about Madame, kovarian, the silence chapter and all of
- 56:51this stuff that we don't really give a shit about anymore, cuz
- 56:53we ditch that last season. Yeah.
- 56:55So what kind of wrapping it up, what?
- 56:57Kind of getting an explanation of who the silence?
- 56:59Or we do we need this. We don't need it, but does it
- 57:02take the way from the story? I think so.
- 57:05But I think, Taking the doctor away from trenzalore rather gots
- 57:10that story that he can just come away and have this Exposition
- 57:13dump and then dump him back into that story again.
- 57:16Yeah. And I think but I don't think
- 57:19you know haven't taken this moment in the next few minutes.
- 57:21Just to kind of see it all. Yes, of the crack in the wall
- 57:24was caused by Madame, kovarian who took these confessed.
- 57:29Foreign aliens and went back in time and mess things up a little
- 57:32bit and that's how that happened.
- 57:34Anybody that poised a Juvenal me and says that his Exposition is
- 57:39terrible. All this saying I'm sorry, it's
- 57:42just a load of explanations about stuff that has nothing to
- 57:46do with this story at all. This is my team that was a very
- 57:51bizarre. So yes, it is really, you know,
- 57:54it's it's in there, it's in addition to this, you know, you
- 57:57could take it out of this scene, this scene would still be there
- 57:59to not like the specifically come up onto the ship just so
- 58:02they can explain. But I don't think this honestly
- 58:06for the general audience that are tuning into Doc's, who this
- 58:09week, this scene is for Doctor Who fans that are paying
- 58:12attention to this bullshit. It's an extra tube Easter egg,
- 58:16you know. So like I said, if you tick Out,
- 58:19you know, the discussion around, you know, we have a song around
- 58:23that, you know, you would still need the doctor to come up at
- 58:25this point to see that Tasha Lem has been took over by a doll
- 58:28looking. The Daleks are now on the point
- 58:30of you know, declaring total war against planet.
- 58:33Trenzalore And then, you know what, we go back to the planet
- 58:37then we never see Madame kovarian again, we don't know
- 58:39what happens to were. What do you mean?
- 58:42Did I mean didn't you did she yeah no I'm going to sorry sorry
- 58:46that we never see Tasha Lem again.
- 58:47Sorry we do. We'll see ya, pop you in.
- 58:51Yeah. In the river Samuel.
- 58:53You watch. Okay.
- 58:55All right. I forgot about that bit.
- 58:58I was only able to stop by this point.
- 59:01But because Moffat can do, horror Moffat, can read, you
- 59:04know, years of Comedy right up, but you can also release onto
- 59:08horror and, you know, scare your quite well, you know, you look
- 59:10at, oh, tell me, you think that's good horror that I still
- 59:14come and have a rate. I mean, that's comedy.
- 59:17But you know, the lead up to that of sort of like well how
- 59:20did you stop them? Well, wouldn't it was?
- 59:22It was totally slow-mo. Yeah, why didn't you cause I did
- 59:26I did I died in this room. Just purely that isn't it?
- 59:29I mean that's a chilling line. I died in this room.
- 59:32Screaming your honor but some when did the tape stop oh a
- 59:37little while back he standing there.
- 59:39That's you're not looking at the are either you?
- 59:42Whoo you know it does those moments.
- 59:43So brilliantly, two, clocks broken.
- 59:45So what's that ticking noise? Yeah.
- 59:48And again, and again, and again, and I thought, geez.
- 59:51I mean, I watch, listen yesterday, and I had lots of
- 59:53little inversion that's that, that death thing on the bed
- 59:57Fraser. Yeah, that is.
- 1:00:00That's probably one of the scariest moments in the whole of
- 1:00:03Doctor Who that is and the way it sort of Rises up.
- 1:00:07Yeah, I'll talk about listen now look, you know, go back to Clara
- 1:00:14quickly and I'll tell you what I think salvages Clara for me.
- 1:00:19Most of the time is Jenna Coleman.
- 1:00:21I just think she's such a good actress that whatever Clara has
- 1:00:25been written for this week. Yeah, she'll she'll play it.
- 1:00:28It's not consistent, but it's always thought believable,
- 1:00:31because she's playing it. Yeah.
- 1:00:33And she obviously thinks does get better work, you know, in
- 1:00:37season eight and nine when and It's just kind of moving away
- 1:00:43from just being sort of like the generic companion and whatnot,
- 1:00:46but we're also getting it in here as well.
- 1:00:48Your little I think it's m You know what we're talking about,
- 1:00:53who are the best sort of actors and actresses in Doctor Who?
- 1:00:56And I've always said, it's Louise Jameson.
- 1:00:58Who's Jim shella? Is the best?
- 1:01:00It's like the we've ever had, you know, if you put Louise
- 1:01:02Jameson and Jenna Coleman taught at all, You know, I think one of
- 1:01:08the reasons why in the Wiis Jameson is the better actor is
- 1:01:11because she's not given as much to work with.
- 1:01:15You know, of course, fills in the gaps.
- 1:01:18Yeah. You know, and Peter Capaldi and
- 1:01:20Jenna Coleman have such good material handed to them.
- 1:01:23Rather chemistry. Yeah, boy, that scene at the end
- 1:01:27of Kill the moon. Exactly.
- 1:01:29Oh, exactly. A but that is that why I'm
- 1:01:31talking about? They are given.
- 1:01:32That is a gift that's wrapped up the man said.
- 1:01:34Right there you go. Kids, knock yourselves out, make
- 1:01:37some magic out of that and they do the fly with it, but it's not
- 1:01:41a given that actors will have chemistry.
- 1:01:43No, they all worked. Nice, not just the screen.
- 1:01:46Yeah, yeah. But you know, for someone like
- 1:01:48Louise James and she's not given up, she's just given.
- 1:01:51There you go, generic companies. She has to fill in.
- 1:01:54You know, she comes at the 11th, girl, as well.
- 1:01:56Okay, this is a Savage, this is a hunter.
- 1:02:01So I'm going to be constantly looking around and I'm going to
- 1:02:03be I'm not going to know how to sit on a settee and I'm not
- 1:02:05going to do contractions and you know, that sort of thing.
- 1:02:08She feels. I think it's in might as well
- 1:02:12talk about filling in the gaps and given that very thin
- 1:02:16character some substance but you know I don't want to take away
- 1:02:21from Jenna Coleman because you know even when she is a wench
- 1:02:25has not given much to do. She is absolutely fantastic and
- 1:02:28this this story is well, you know she's you know when she's
- 1:02:34left with a nun, you know inches having the You know, the
- 1:02:40Christmas and a whole sort of world is falling away around
- 1:02:43ashes. She's absolutely selling it.
- 1:02:46But I do think it's interesting that both Steven Moffat
- 1:02:50acknowledge you when he wrote series a, that he really needed
- 1:02:55to focus Clara's character and actually give her a bit of a
- 1:02:59character. Oh, absolutely.
- 1:03:00I'm a deep breath is completely doing.
- 1:03:02That is doing so much groundwork for her and Matt Smith recently
- 1:03:08in an interview. Said that he thought the time of
- 1:03:11the doctor was, aha, remember how he worded it now, he was
- 1:03:14trying to be diplomatic, but he said we started really strong in
- 1:03:18series 5 and the last episode, it wasn't very strong.
- 1:03:22Also rely that he I don't think he was too impressed with this.
- 1:03:26Look she gives it this much gumption, is what he's going,
- 1:03:30he's not an it out the park, you know, he's bringing everything
- 1:03:33that you want from his doctor into Into the store, you know,
- 1:03:37he's given you the sort of the sarcastic side.
- 1:03:40He's given you the The song that I like the childish side, you
- 1:03:46know, the one that works well for the kids, he's giving you
- 1:03:49that that's all alien side of. I mean, we're talking again,
- 1:03:53right over the start, I love that scene, where we like cars.
- 1:03:55Like I'm your boy. He's like, you're my boyfriend's
- 1:03:58like ding dong. I'll must evolve.
- 1:04:01Look at the money was like, no, no, no, I'm not reading.
- 1:04:02Psychosis is a roller coaster. This.
- 1:04:04You know what, your players that sort of social awkwardness, you
- 1:04:07know, I all that stuff. Don't ya?
- 1:04:08Well it's I just don't like that weird pervy angle with.
- 1:04:13Lara, the eleventh doctor. Yeah, the whole way and he loves
- 1:04:26the doctor being sexually voracious, but it's time for me.
- 1:04:29It's just fun. And thank God, I didn't do that
- 1:04:32with Capaldi. Well, exactly.
- 1:04:35Oh no. Except we're ever sold the most
- 1:04:38romantic story of all time. Exactly, exactly.
- 1:04:41But you know, you've said, Many times how many others, a
- 1:04:44difference between sexualizing, the doctor and having a romantic
- 1:04:47doctor? And I think that's that story,
- 1:04:49sort of really proves your point really there.
- 1:04:54Thank you very much. I love Clara's down here, where
- 1:05:00it says everything you need to know about these characters when
- 1:05:04the horrendous woman that the fathers brought, the dinner,
- 1:05:08goes all their poems in the crackers, and then goes, what?
- 1:05:12Like the jokes, you know, that's all you need to know about.
- 1:05:16And really, that's, that's, that's doing a rusty.
- 1:05:18Davis telling keratin a very economic way.
- 1:05:22And Paul. She's beautiful, isn't it?
- 1:05:26Yeah. This bit with the Nan telling
- 1:05:28her all seems to serve our witness kind of I think we're
- 1:05:31talking about a snow event. Yeah.
- 1:05:37Look at her rolling. Her eyes.
- 1:05:38What a bitch. Honestly.
- 1:05:42Who invited her to dinner. She ain't even a looker We'll go
- 1:05:49here. Comes River Song.
- 1:05:52River song. Yeah comes with a song hang on
- 1:05:57because the doctors done the same thing.
- 1:05:58He's left her set a home in the Tardis ones with the Tardis.
- 1:06:02He's got the Tardis back and we as he's done it to what we have
- 1:06:05done this a few times now. Oh yeah.
- 1:06:07So then he's dropped her off again.
- 1:06:10You know made I think that he's calling boxes come out the
- 1:06:13Tardis and value in the Tardis comes back and inside its River
- 1:06:15song. Oh yeah so yeah I Paschal em.
- 1:06:19Sell em. Yeah so this is the scene this
- 1:06:21is why I'm soon as this is I think this should have been with
- 1:06:23a song. This feels very much like
- 1:06:26yeseong should be popping up here.
- 1:06:27It's all I shouldn't work back. Well no, it'll be another
- 1:06:31element but to be fair, Rivers, been such a big part of this
- 1:06:34era. Exactly.
- 1:06:35Not part of this last story is afoot Zara Mission.
- 1:06:40I mean, we're going to do a whole other podcast on my
- 1:06:43thoughts on River song. But ultimately, I do feel that
- 1:06:47there is a river song, Holy and that would fill it in.
- 1:06:49And with rubber song, just popped up at the Tardis because
- 1:06:52Is that lane is for River Song, you know, you know flying the
- 1:06:56Tardis is easy, it's always been flying.
- 1:06:57The doctor that's been a problem that is such a river song line
- 1:07:02and intimidate lines. Like there's a river song, Hull.
- 1:07:06All right. I'm not taking the bait.
- 1:07:10Continue looking for the bit. That's what it is.
- 1:07:20All this is kind of sweet as well and making the toy and I
- 1:07:25think the crack is light in the room, isn't it?
- 1:07:28Yeah, yeah. Oh god.
- 1:07:30Oh look at him. She gently reminds me of
- 1:07:33remember that. That weird / v.
- 1:07:36S, mr. Grace from, are you being so,
- 1:07:39and Out mr. Grace died.
- 1:07:42That's the real. Looks like we still have any
- 1:07:45ponds classes, isn't you? Oh, that's sweet.
- 1:07:47I like that. And in fact, you know what,
- 1:07:48it's, it's a bit unfortunate for Clara when a becomes low at the
- 1:07:52end and steals the moment. But if Amy had not been in this,
- 1:07:56now they're very strange. A mission.
- 1:08:00Yeah. He's with him.
- 1:08:03But you know what this is, I gots a phrase that this sequence
- 1:08:05in the second near where he climbs, Atop The Tower with his
- 1:08:09hideous, make up and starts throwing out regeneration and
- 1:08:12July some Marvel character destroying diak armies.
- 1:08:16I feel this real fun. Yes.
- 1:08:18It's my be my least favorite sequence in the entirety.
- 1:08:20I mean I was watching this going.
- 1:08:22What has happened to this show? What is going on here?
- 1:08:25Like, when did the doctor become this?
- 1:08:30So it's better be there. Very strange way to, like you
- 1:08:35really in the time when it's him and wilf doing the, you know,
- 1:08:40the laser peace, now that I can get Beyond, that's a bit of fun.
- 1:08:43This is very well, look is making look at this.
- 1:08:46Yeah, I can't look at it. I'm sorry.
- 1:08:47I'm gonna put me it would just would just go.
- 1:08:49And in this case, it's just all just kind of work, you know,
- 1:08:52she's virtually on his lap, you know, like Like a grandchild
- 1:08:58would be just kind of reading the porno minute.
- 1:09:01He's desserts. Have a joke.
- 1:09:03I don't get it. It's just give away though.
- 1:09:07Babe, I think it's much now, but I've got now, I'm gonna shut up
- 1:09:10because you're saying something sweet.
- 1:09:12I think it's I'm not going to be tawdry for once.
- 1:09:15And the kid comes in at your barnable.
- 1:09:18No, I'm not. And it's just like, you're
- 1:09:20getting that sort of not real, sort of old age Vibe.
- 1:09:24Hmm. I think I wore diapers.
- 1:09:26I do. I do wonder if this was the sort
- 1:09:28of material that he was a bit. Is this how we're going out?
- 1:09:33Yeah, being this horrible make up this horrible latex.
- 1:09:38It's I do. I get it and I get what he's
- 1:09:41trying to do, and he's trying to suggest that the doctor is this
- 1:09:45one. It's like the opposite of what
- 1:09:47was done with David Tennant, when they turned into, just
- 1:09:49horrible time, lord Victorious is wiped out Gallifreyan.
- 1:09:53Now, he can do whatever the fuck he wants with time and he's
- 1:09:55horrible beast and he's got to be killed for it.
- 1:09:58And that Smith instead is a lovely cuddly, sweet Doctor Who
- 1:10:01isn't saying this town and save all these children from all the
- 1:10:05moms, because that's what he does.
- 1:10:06It's like, you know what? What makes the eleventh doctor?
- 1:10:12We generally it is all the age. It sounds wonderful sentiment.
- 1:10:16Yeah, I think it is executed appallingly.
- 1:10:19He hot, I don't disagree. I think, you know with with
- 1:10:23spent this you know way saying like I haven't had that
- 1:10:26connection with the characters to miss them.
- 1:10:28It's because the story is how many characters he's saved the
- 1:10:33factors that he's spent decades and centuries in this one place
- 1:10:37doing this one thing, which is Ending this planet.
- 1:10:40It's not just you know this planet is defended, there you
- 1:10:43go. After Fender dictionary by give
- 1:10:45us a ring you know if the come back and I'll pop back in the
- 1:10:48Tardis, he is literally just there and you know the traveling
- 1:10:52stops You know, the journey through all the time space stops
- 1:10:57for me. Even though I just went on one
- 1:10:59planet, I didn't feel anything watching this is when handles
- 1:11:03dies are their wife and their, oh, God is, that was really,
- 1:11:08really sad. But you know what?
- 1:11:09Like I think maybe this is him pushing the emotion too much.
- 1:11:15They had. And so that is live because
- 1:11:17empower, the doctor when she comes to that conclusion, that
- 1:11:21the power of the lottery is her friends and they share that.
- 1:11:24Very, very understated. Seeing review as on top of the
- 1:11:27TARDIS and that wonderfully, kind of moment where she sends
- 1:11:31off that weird alien. And that her last act before she
- 1:11:35regenerates, is one of kindness, and then she goes on top, that
- 1:11:38cliff and says, Rye, come on, bring it on.
- 1:11:42That emotion is so finely judged and sand in typical, Christian
- 1:11:48or style. It's very understated.
- 1:11:50Yes, it's sort of really made me sad and Where this is all?
- 1:11:55Yo, on top of the tower shooting out the energy is it's too much.
- 1:12:02What's in complete contrast? You know I watched we watched
- 1:12:05them just the last sort of like 10 minutes before we start the
- 1:12:07coordinator really struck home with me.
- 1:12:10You know, we've got the scene where Clauses talking to the
- 1:12:12wall and you know the crack has been doing that awful thing of
- 1:12:18Doctor Who Doctor Who which is kind of the theme of C7, you
- 1:12:26know, it's is introduced at the end of CCS.
- 1:12:28That is the famous series, I as well.
- 1:12:30Am I good man? Doctor Who, but know, the name
- 1:12:34of the doctor. What is the doctor's name?
- 1:12:36Specifically? Because, you know, you have the
- 1:12:38end of Series 6 where it's you've got mold of our good
- 1:12:41Doctor Who Doctor Who and that's, you know, you have the
- 1:12:43Snowman where it's like Doctor Who and it's a running theme
- 1:12:47talking of the Daleks all saying dr.
- 1:12:48Ho dr. Ho exactly who is Doctor, Who is
- 1:12:53the Doctor in. This is the point where that
- 1:12:56comes to its conclusion that scene with Clara against that
- 1:13:01wall, just go and meet, you're asking the wrong question
- 1:13:06Doctor, Who it is, just the doctor, that's who he is, and
- 1:13:09that's what he does. And that really just, but I do
- 1:13:13believe that is established in the name of the dog.
- 1:13:15So, you know that it's not it. This is repeated here in name of
- 1:13:18the doctor. He says, I did it in the name of
- 1:13:21the oxides. He said, and then you have the
- 1:13:24Day of the Doctor where you have drawn her to is not the doctor
- 1:13:28because these are called, say, because I'm actually gonna say
- 1:13:31so positive about this horrific scene and the bit where the
- 1:13:35energy goes in here, but he looks surprised because whoo,
- 1:13:38that's really funny. That's really, really fun.
- 1:13:41Now, this be a vaccine where he's screaming his head off.
- 1:13:43I'm like, what is happening here?
- 1:13:46It's, it's his hero moment, isn't it?
- 1:13:48It's kinda like, yeah. He's, you know what, though he
- 1:13:52did it bear on top of Stonehenge.
- 1:13:57Different. The spaghetti Hollywood actors
- 1:14:00watching him in that scene. You remember, it was it we
- 1:14:03watched him and not saying the said he was absolutely
- 1:14:04astonishing. The fella from lala land.
- 1:14:09Ryan Reynolds. Yeah, Ryan Reynolds.
- 1:14:11Yeah, yeah. Yeah, and now he's wearing a
- 1:14:15suit. He got while teach work but he's
- 1:14:16a big Doctor Who fan. Why was that not him?
- 1:14:20That my Reynolds. I thought it was.
- 1:14:23Who you think enough? Someone else.
- 1:14:26Okay about, who's the other Ryan?
- 1:14:29Ryan Phillippe. Oh man.
- 1:14:31He was my sexual Awakening. Now, Ryan's Lon Ryan, Gosling.
- 1:14:35I'll maybe was wrong glasses on because all the Ryan's are
- 1:14:37Doctor Who fans. You know, I gotta say though,
- 1:14:41they went with this silhouette of a Dalek in the dark with the
- 1:14:44blue light. It looks very creepy.
- 1:14:47Yeah. Almost.
- 1:14:48See it all when he's screaming at the Daleks come and get it.
- 1:14:52That's just how he did it bear in the Rings.
- 1:14:55Back at in, take it all baby. I love that saying.
- 1:15:00I think you know the the the bit before you get to the pixie dust
- 1:15:03where he's kind of you know he's resigned to the fact that this
- 1:15:07is it that he's gonna die and he's the dark.
- 1:15:09Yeah, just do conch me. Can you you know, the he's got
- 1:15:13such a even ask good accident. Yeah, I think he's getting that
- 1:15:17angry side across his. Yeah.
- 1:15:19I think your brain and this I think for all that year but he's
- 1:15:22not happy with these material ever.
- 1:15:24He's I think he's giving a hundred and fifty percent there.
- 1:15:31Is that possible? I'm not sure.
- 1:15:34Oh, I do like a flaming Dalek, you know, in the wreckage they
- 1:15:38did that a lot of Day of the Doctor and they didn't either
- 1:15:41the Daleks as well, after that actually went up to Jon
- 1:15:45pertwee's hairdryer one of the models of the Daleks and see
- 1:15:49them. So now I'm gonna say right, I
- 1:15:56don't really like these long speeches that the doctors have
- 1:16:01before they regenerate and I seem to be the way now.
- 1:16:03So refreshing, where Jodie Whittaker just went or what my
- 1:16:06their season next also. Know.
- 1:16:08I was like great no speech and there's a couple D1 feel like it
- 1:16:12went on for the length of a Bible but it was good, it went
- 1:16:17on but it was there was a moment when she emerged over when a
- 1:16:21fantastic you know. But I do think, I think this is
- 1:16:26his the he saved the best for last here.
- 1:16:28But his performance in this scene is really, really strong
- 1:16:32and yeah average a good job and doing this scene, he's the guy
- 1:16:36who does the math Smith impressions in plays him for big
- 1:16:38finish as well. It's going on I'll send you the
- 1:16:43link. but this, this whole scene is just absolutely Divine and
- 1:16:52the music, You Know, the music just the script in the
- 1:16:55performances, the direction, everything is just absolutely
- 1:16:59spot-on. With a show.
- 1:17:01I love Daniel. The music when Capaldi comes in
- 1:17:03as well. It's like dude.
- 1:17:04Yeah. Dude.
- 1:17:09Yeah, I think this is the best scene.
- 1:17:10This is probably the best thing in the whole of Time of the
- 1:17:12Doctor is this. So, which is your favorite last
- 1:17:18seen for a doctor then. Oh, I don't like David Tennant's
- 1:17:24that are I don't want to go. I'll bugger off.
- 1:17:28It's probably Jodi whiskers. I really love that and in fact
- 1:17:30if as rumored that was going to be the last scene ever of Doctor
- 1:17:34Who her on that Cliff thrown out that energy.
- 1:17:38That's all rainbow energy. Ma'am man, I love that to be the
- 1:17:41ending of Doctor Who I think this is, this is up there, this
- 1:17:46is. This is just brilliant because,
- 1:17:49you know, you've had very self-congratulatory ones up
- 1:17:54until this point, you've had them for Cycles.
- 1:17:56Daniel, you were fantastic. But you know what?
- 1:17:58So was I okay. At least I'll pat on the back,
- 1:18:01you've had. You know what?
- 1:18:01That? No, no way.
- 1:18:02But that was introducing the idea of a regeneration.
- 1:18:05Yeah. When you group of kids, who
- 1:18:07probably not get the concept at that point, you know, it's it's
- 1:18:11a very simple, very strict, but sort of Just.
- 1:18:14Yeah. And then you have David Tennant,
- 1:18:17who goes on his Grand to our of everything before he doesn't
- 1:18:21want to go. I just don't like the end of it.
- 1:18:24I love all the grand tour but not the end bit and then you get
- 1:18:27this, we all change. When you think about it, were
- 1:18:29all different people. All through our lives and I'm
- 1:18:32never going to forget one. Lined of this, I will always
- 1:18:37remember when the doctor was me. I'll always be grateful
- 1:18:40exercise. You want to forget it.
- 1:18:41I'll tell you. You might want to forget the
- 1:18:45episode, but you don't want to forget Matt Smith, not when he's
- 1:18:48given material like this. And not when he's on this form
- 1:18:51because it's just, it's absolutely gorgeous.
- 1:18:54We are certainly identified as I've done more.
- 1:18:57Matt Smith colleges, I did I found called Mercy with sigh.
- 1:19:01I just for some of those scenes and I was absolutely brilliant.
- 1:19:04Brilliant. Yeah, at his best.
- 1:19:07He is stunningly. Good.
- 1:19:10Yeah, she comes. Oh, they're both in weeks now.
- 1:19:12Are they him an earlier about how is, does look a bit like, a
- 1:19:15week than it? But there are no, I like the
- 1:19:19people. They touch each other's faces.
- 1:19:21All this lovely, good night, or she gets the last time, well,
- 1:19:24and up, but well, and up now, Yeah, this is real.
- 1:19:27And you know what's great? I'm like, Laura it was great is
- 1:19:32when he regenerates it sort of sneezes Danny, it's okay.
- 1:19:35And suddenly he's Peter Capaldi because we're so used to these
- 1:19:38protracted sort of throwing out the energy here.
- 1:19:42I think that's enough, but he's got rid of that bit.
- 1:19:44But, yeah, look at our weary is, I just, I just Jesus, I've ever
- 1:19:50said that Matt Smith in that makeup was ghoulish, is peeing.
- 1:19:53Olie Call you with these a taco Bros.
- 1:19:58I Sprint. I teach you know what?
- 1:20:00I do. Adore Capaldi as the doctor.
- 1:20:02Yeah. Kidneys.
- 1:20:08We're probably crash. You just one thing freezer, do
- 1:20:14you happen to know how to fly this thing?
- 1:20:18What's up, laughing now? Oh, I'm going out on a good note
- 1:20:22yet. Although, I'm going to say this
- 1:20:24to you, the, you know, because obviously it's very dreary when
- 1:20:28David Tennant, the cameras pan in on him and he's all know
- 1:20:31where to go, and then he regenerates and all that place.
- 1:20:34Yeah, stress. Well, I'll tell you what that
- 1:20:36first bit with Matt Smith is what the most delightful seen
- 1:20:39ever, isn't it? Not yet.
- 1:20:41I mean, I liked David Tennant's regeneration.
- 1:20:44I think that's suited his doctor and I think it's a mystery.
- 1:20:49If, but he was very narcissistic misery, wasn't he?
- 1:20:54Yeah. It's a very, yeah, you have the
- 1:20:57ego and that was the kind of ego, and I love that Russell,
- 1:21:00play it at that. And again, you know, when I was
- 1:21:04talking about, you know, Steven Moffat has docked and things and
- 1:21:07pushes Us in directions that we don't necessarily want to be
- 1:21:10pushed Russell did that with end of time, you know, we don't want
- 1:21:13a doctor who was all of a sudden, you know, seriously,
- 1:21:16contemplating, even Bernard cribbins in a shed full of
- 1:21:21radiation. We want Tim to be the heroes
- 1:21:23that I have that moment where that's in doubt and he's kind of
- 1:21:26real and against what you have to do, you know, he's going to
- 1:21:28do it, but just have that moment of, you know, I could have done
- 1:21:32so much more and it's always To be you will for has to be you
- 1:21:35and find it. So amusing, you know that they
- 1:21:38actually go down the route of David Tennant's doctor having so
- 1:21:43much Chris, he actually believes, he is as amazing as
- 1:21:47all those fans out there for David Tennant was to a point
- 1:21:51where he's unlikable. I thought that was a really bold
- 1:21:54direction to take absolutely and you know, how many, how many
- 1:21:57people are worse, would have been sitting there.
- 1:22:00You know when he says that like I don't want the girl how many
- 1:22:02people are just going to. Uncle may need, and then back
- 1:22:06for day, the doctor again, again, for looking a bit like,
- 1:22:12Matt Smith at the end of this story.
- 1:22:14I'm sure. Well, I mean people are not
- 1:22:17going to everyone looks the, the makeup of the super old doctor.
- 1:22:20But is it any worse than old tenant in soy sauce rice at
- 1:22:26nobody? I've been watching Star Trek
- 1:22:28episodes recently where they've been agent up people.
- 1:22:31Nobody can do it. They just, can't they just Each
- 1:22:34up people convincingly. There's a slap on it.
- 1:22:38It's like people's heads mutate. It's a motive, bizarre effect.
- 1:22:42Well, I'm just going to see. I think it works.
- 1:22:44I think it's effective. He looks old.
- 1:22:47Then you look super world and I think it's an even when he's got
- 1:22:51the super old makeup on, I think he still likes you given us
- 1:22:56those bits because this is the, this is the point and he's You
- 1:23:00guys in it where people are so nice to us folder and in that
- 1:23:02folder phoning it in waves oldest Flappy wrists and quirks.
- 1:23:08A lot going on in series 7. There is but that's his doctors.
- 1:23:12Will you not going to? He's never not going to have you
- 1:23:14know flap. Yes it's like expecting.
- 1:23:19You know, David Tennant, not to see, I'm sorry, or you did or
- 1:23:21how Peter Capaldi, not to be a little bit sarcastic.
- 1:23:24Someone is do that and part of their count, that's always going
- 1:23:26to be there. But there's so much more the so
- 1:23:28much more going on in that episode than just, you know,
- 1:23:33quite what's weird is I think like with Tenon.
- 1:23:36He comes along and he gets probably the ultimate hero
- 1:23:39moment at the end of the Christmas Invasion where he
- 1:23:41comes out and does his thing. And yes, I used the world and
- 1:23:45all of that and he's absolutely, I'd this is the doctor is the
- 1:23:48Loot ultimate hero and then Davies is so interesting that he
- 1:23:55basically makes him. The villain come the end of his
- 1:23:58Reign by having him turn into this time.
- 1:24:01Lord Victorious, who is basically the rules of time of
- 1:24:04mind. I'm going to do whatever I want.
- 1:24:06He's basically the bad guy and that's why he's got a regenerate
- 1:24:08at that point because he's gone off a cliff with masp.
- 1:24:12If I think he started off as absolute peak in series 5, like
- 1:24:17he's at his If right is fully formed, I think he probably
- 1:24:21gives one of his best performances in his very first
- 1:24:24acting in Doctor Who, which is time of angels, on flesh and
- 1:24:27stone. He's really annoying that.
- 1:24:30I mean, it is on, is a essentially, make him a bit of a
- 1:24:33parody of himself and they don't push him in New Directions,
- 1:24:38That's was annoying. I think he finds the directions
- 1:24:42himself and I think, you know, he's written the way he's
- 1:24:44written, and he finds his doctor within that rating and their
- 1:24:48hand. You know, sigh heart or says
- 1:24:51that following the first series, following sort of Christmas too
- 1:24:56cold. You know, he's put the other
- 1:24:58noises success and the writers write to what he's doing, which
- 1:25:02is always the case. I mean, I'll always said that
- 1:25:04Peter Capaldi in season 8 is written as Malcolm Tucker and
- 1:25:07not yeah not Doctor Who and the other Cleo's as it goes along.
- 1:25:12And so I think you know what the writing is doing is probably
- 1:25:16lean and more into the sort of infantile.
- 1:25:18Beside him, and he's having to work harder to get those those
- 1:25:23moments out of there. You look at God complex where
- 1:25:27he's having a kind of really bring it down in the face of
- 1:25:30dealing with Williams character. You look at Journey to the
- 1:25:33Centre of the TARDIS where starts off very, you know,
- 1:25:40cliche 11, dr. All you know, excitable and
- 1:25:44quirky and floppy risks in the minute, the Tardis door shut, he
- 1:25:47spins round and you see, He goes the Van Valen but that's right.
- 1:25:50Your mind no bitches we're going to go and find Clara and he
- 1:25:52brings it right down. Well was I sobbing I'll say he's
- 1:25:56doing some very heavy lifting indeed.
- 1:25:58Yeah it does you know he's he's got a public troughton quality
- 1:26:03of being a nigger but the Carrie when everything else is isn't
- 1:26:06quite gone on behind the scenes your he can carry the story, he
- 1:26:10is always going to be someone that you're going to be there
- 1:26:11the lock up and go. Okay?
- 1:26:14You're the psycho is out there. Maybe he's you know what?
- 1:26:17I'm going to development. Of the company, as much as 1,
- 1:26:20but we have got a doctor who is always interesting and engaging
- 1:26:25and entertaining. Unlike the end of the 11:00
- 1:26:30hour, I am not going to contradict you there because I
- 1:26:33think that's a good sentiment before we go into questions and
- 1:26:36three or nine hundred things that we love about this story.
- 1:26:40That is a good place to end the commentary path is.
- 1:26:43And for a second I very quickly just gonna have to wait on a bug
- 1:26:47up in Right. So we have got two questions.
- 1:26:53People, you know, how I like to go and ask the hand farm and
- 1:26:56everyone else out there. If they've got any thoughts on
- 1:26:59this story or any questions? So where we are?
- 1:27:04So short. Ah lovely Joe I'll beat your
- 1:27:08ass. What color do you think?
- 1:27:09The doctors new kidneys are the same color as the six doctor's
- 1:27:17coat? Well, I was going to say tart
- 1:27:20and so we'll go with that. She does said I would happily
- 1:27:23help you like Polly. Find out.
- 1:27:25Oh, Jolly Jack Koya. If you could replace Matt,
- 1:27:36Smith's regular doctor with an old man version in one of his
- 1:27:39existing stories, which one would you pick and why?
- 1:27:44Well, I've got a recast Matt Smith in one of his stories with
- 1:27:46an older actor, know the old. So they could the, the or doctor
- 1:27:51with a super all doctor? Which one would you then?
- 1:27:52Put into another Matt Smith story?
- 1:27:56I'm slightly confused, can you ask this question because I
- 1:27:59don't quite get it. So I would put the super old
- 1:28:02Matt Smith into the God complex. Oh, I see.
- 1:28:06I get a question. That's what I have.
- 1:28:07That old doctor in that story because I think having that old
- 1:28:12doctor sort of creeping around That hotel.
- 1:28:14And you know, when it's all about that, your biggest fears
- 1:28:17and whatnot, I think that would, because not very action-packed.
- 1:28:20That was, well, he doesn't have to do any sort of like, physical
- 1:28:23physical stuff. The sue you tell everybody was
- 1:28:27that creepy old Matt Smith in are more stories.
- 1:28:33Okay, I'm gonna put him in 2000 the Snowman because he's sort of
- 1:28:40a bit tired of the universe, isn't he?
- 1:28:43And a bit sort of solid in the first half of that.
- 1:28:48I think he probably would, the old leaven structural work well,
- 1:28:52in a choice as well. Mmm, Yeah, it's like, you know,
- 1:28:57the dream Lord is making. You know what the doctor told
- 1:29:01that sort of thing. I mean, all the one I couldn't
- 1:29:03put him in something like the launcher where he's supposed to
- 1:29:06be young and pretty, and it hurts, how you don't want to see
- 1:29:09that? They are.
- 1:29:10No, you don't. Hmm, what else?
- 1:29:14They've run. Here we go.
- 1:29:15Dear for any human or or us? And I think the last 10 minutes
- 1:29:21is arguably the most exciting. 10 minutes since the shore came
- 1:29:23back or is very strange, man. Go on.
- 1:29:26He's got a point, but should the doctor have Fully regenerated on
- 1:29:30the clock tower. Oh no.
- 1:29:35Oh God. No, I wouldn't want to go out
- 1:29:37and that bit know. I think every generation is weak
- 1:29:41and needs to be honest. I was in a way for the next
- 1:29:42story to pick up. Well, not just that, you know,
- 1:29:44your have the explosion, you get rid of the Daleks with the
- 1:29:47Regeneration energy, but then you need that stew.
- 1:29:49You need that last final scene, that, you know, lovely bit of
- 1:29:55not forgetting one lane, you'd miss all that really.
- 1:29:58So we get that marvelous bit and deep breath, where the
- 1:30:01Tyrannosaurus Rex. Coughs upper time-traveling
- 1:30:04furball and thirdly to being the tallest for that gag to land.
- 1:30:08Yeah, Jason Thompson. Oh yeah, Jason yeah.
- 1:30:13Apparently the plan was a full season on trenzalore but Matt
- 1:30:16Smith wanted out earlier than that.
- 1:30:18Hence it all being crammed into one episode.
- 1:30:20Is that true? I don't know whose this sauces
- 1:30:24Jason who are your sources. Do you think a full season would
- 1:30:29have been better made more sense and added more weight to the
- 1:30:32eventual, but regeneration. Yes.
- 1:30:36And in fact, they did Tales of trenzalore book, didn't they?
- 1:30:39Where they where they told short stories set for out his time on
- 1:30:45trenzalore God, that would have been a really interesting idea
- 1:30:49if that had gone down that road, I'm going to say no and we'll
- 1:30:53your food. You contrary get, I think a full
- 1:30:55season on trends at all would just be born.
- 1:30:59Think how many episodes would you actually get through of the
- 1:31:03Cyberman attack? Chris.
- 1:31:04Amos and I defeated maybe like a condensed six episodes, like
- 1:31:08flocks. Will that work again, you know,
- 1:31:10you're still going to be kind of like we're seeing the same thing
- 1:31:13essentially, I mean it's not easy.
- 1:31:17As if you could even do like John Pertwee season 7, you know,
- 1:31:23and mix the stories up. This going to use scope for
- 1:31:25interesting stories, there is going to be lat.
- 1:31:29That's Justin bit of imagine. I would like to thank see
- 1:31:32potentially would again, sorry. So that's just that limited
- 1:31:37imagination there. I could tell a few stories on
- 1:31:39trans law. Yeah.
- 1:31:40But I'll have my weeping angels in the snow story.
- 1:31:45You would you will notice team quite quickly, though.
- 1:31:50So Daniel night. Similarly as said his us would
- 1:31:54this work better as a two-parter or should this have been a two
- 1:31:58part of? Again I just think there's not
- 1:31:59enough not unlike what does there is myself a nemesis?
- 1:32:03Yeah yeah there ain't enough to make up the episode link that
- 1:32:07we've got is already filling it full of fluff.
- 1:32:10What I think I would like thought is what a big nice would
- 1:32:14be another season between Day of the Doctor in this.
- 1:32:18So, if they'd had another season of Matt and Clara, this would
- 1:32:21be, yeah, you would have then had that time to sort of build
- 1:32:28up the character of claro, a bit more throwing a bit more, you
- 1:32:31could have had more scenes with non, if you really wanted that
- 1:32:33sort of thing. Yeah, I love all those.
- 1:32:36What ifs bar? I would sacrifice That season.
- 1:32:39We've come over here. Caldwell.
- 1:32:41Oh no cause I envisioned know I'd, but I think in a they are
- 1:32:45on fire. So I think this is, this is the
- 1:32:48end in that Moffat, always wanted.
- 1:32:49I think there's probably elements that had to be changed
- 1:32:52around, you know, maybe is Tasha Lem has had to come in because
- 1:32:55Allah Kingston wasn't available. So that's element as had to be
- 1:32:58successful. Like, that should be River Song,
- 1:32:59doesn't it? Yeah.
- 1:33:01But I do feel like, you know, the idea of them, Ending his
- 1:33:07reign as the doctor, you know on a planet where I was having to
- 1:33:11stay in, he's having to defend it for centuries.
- 1:33:13I think that was always moffatt's plan.
- 1:33:16I think he's just kind of, you know you the bones of what you
- 1:33:19want to do is always been their knees.
- 1:33:21Just have to kind of mold like the latex on Matt Smith's face.
- 1:33:25It just like the loot Exxon must Smith's first.
- 1:33:26Yes, grew out of all proportions and Daniel nacre.
- 1:33:30He's on to see is the coat of Tasha.
- 1:33:32Lem a billion M version of River Song?
- 1:33:34Yes, we have already. Just this and come to the
- 1:33:37conclusion that. Well, she basically is nothing,
- 1:33:41the Tardis and shoot. So yeah, she is.
- 1:33:43And why can't the Daleks in this?
- 1:33:45And a Day of the Doctor actually exterminate anyone because he'd
- 1:33:49a muffin never has them exterminate anybody another
- 1:33:52experiment? Anyone because none of course
- 1:33:54the Never Going extremely the doctor because then this shows
- 1:33:56finished in it. So that's why I like to achieve
- 1:33:58new came in. He had that darling, come along
- 1:34:00a resolution and you killed a whole bunch of people and they
- 1:34:02were suddenly very scary again. Yeah, we'll put the Space
- 1:34:06reasons. Daniel, you can cover a lot of
- 1:34:11sins that you know. Yeah, this is one from guys.
- 1:34:14Don't recognize the name Simon heart, is that?
- 1:34:19I don't know, let's see handsome, handsome and of
- 1:34:22looking fella but I don't recognize he's very intelligent
- 1:34:25and incisive or just a bit dull. Come on, the serum.
- 1:34:29Did this story really need to jump through hoops?
- 1:34:31To answer every lingering question from the Matt Smith,
- 1:34:34you are now. I don't think see, I don't think
- 1:34:38it does those jump through hoops.
- 1:34:41I think the Hoops are positioned there as in when you need them.
- 1:34:47So that when the story is itself progressing, there's a hoop
- 1:34:50there that you can then jump through and see all this
- 1:34:52explains this in this explain that and that explains the
- 1:34:55other. I would have been happy with an
- 1:34:58exploration of Amy's crack, rather than that enormous,
- 1:35:02Exposition seen the way they're just a crack and the time Lords
- 1:35:05and that would probably would have been enough for me.
- 1:35:07Yeah yeah. I don't think we needed to tie
- 1:35:09the The Croc to the God complex. That was certainly.
- 1:35:12I'll know and as you we were skipping Over that.
- 1:35:15That's a bit annoying that we saw what was in there, wasn't
- 1:35:17it? Yeah, I think that works better
- 1:35:19than not knowing what the doctors sometimes less is.
- 1:35:21More less is more, so that felt a bit agree.
- 1:35:24Just bought them otherwise egregious.
- 1:35:27Yes impressing you with that way.
- 1:35:30A dictionary for next Christmas immediately.
- 1:35:34But now I think is the explanations for me felt like
- 1:35:37the will come in at a good point in the story, and that just
- 1:35:42leaves us, I believe with Stephon Alexander who was asked
- 1:35:46a few questions and is wrinkly old doctors who still naked
- 1:35:49apart from his Holograms. Oh well hope not.
- 1:35:53Well this is seen as in the where Clara put clothes on it.
- 1:35:55So I'm going to assume that the doctor puts clothes on at the
- 1:35:57same time as climate playing I didn't even last scene of Matt
- 1:35:59Smith young naked so I don't want no no let's just not go
- 1:36:04there wasn't it great to see Eddie the bomb and from hustle
- 1:36:08in Doctor Who will see you this. Don't really watch Russell.
- 1:36:13So I'm gonna edit the bombers wonderful.
- 1:36:16They'll basically hang out in his bar.
- 1:36:19Yeah, and they do tricks every episode there.
- 1:36:21Somehow managed to get free drinks for the entire Seven
- 1:36:23Seasons By Doing various tricks on him.
- 1:36:26He's a wonderful care. I'm think he might have been the
- 1:36:29fellow who's with Tessa Peak Jones, you know.
- 1:36:31It. Yeah.
- 1:36:33Yes. It was marvelous see if they,
- 1:36:34which gives it was wonderful because after a fantastic use of
- 1:36:36exceptional, support and cast as we've discussed.
- 1:36:40Yes. And the last I'm going to leave
- 1:36:41until you to you, which is why does Moffitt have to write such
- 1:36:45crap? Well, I don't think he always
- 1:36:47does, right? Crap.
- 1:36:48Sorry. Steve and I hate to disagree and
- 1:36:50I love descriptors for my favorite things to do, but
- 1:36:54though I think that I have said several times lately and its
- 1:36:59best Steven Moffat is the best Doctor Who writer.
- 1:37:04You're not think, I certainly think the work he did under
- 1:37:07Rusty Davis, is some of the best ever Doctor.
- 1:37:11Who it's not my favorite stories in my, I've got a quilt next
- 1:37:14door made by Miles. Her off of our top 20 stories
- 1:37:18and it's plastered with Steven Moffat episodes, so I don't go
- 1:37:22as far as crab know, I do think that maybe when he's not being
- 1:37:29overseen are both in there, was anyone not the script editors?
- 1:37:33Not the producers because they were coming and going through a
- 1:37:36revolving door. You will be erased from Doctor
- 1:37:38Who old Carol Skinner are any, anybody was looking over his
- 1:37:45work like Julie, Of not and Phil Collins and Will Davis and
- 1:37:48saying, you know what, that's a bit much.
- 1:37:51So I think at times he was self-indulgent and he had
- 1:37:55godhood syndrome, and he took things a bit too far, so, but I
- 1:38:01do think he's a good enough, right either.
- 1:38:04Even in episodes that I really dislike like this, there's just
- 1:38:07things are good. They're still good dialogue, you
- 1:38:10know, they're still good a fairly good structure to it.
- 1:38:14I absolutely I can you. Can't nobody likes.
- 1:38:17Even you cannot write off somebody with that much talent.
- 1:38:22No, I think I agree. I think he is, you know, hands
- 1:38:26down the best of the new series regulars with hard.
- 1:38:29I think he's probably the best rate I love hard.
- 1:38:32And certainly since Bob, Holmes, him and Bob Holmes already up
- 1:38:36there was as the top talent in late.
- 1:38:39You see, even if he's not writing a story that you're
- 1:38:41enjoying, them is still elements in there that you are going to
- 1:38:45enjoy, doesn't hit them all 100% of hundred percent of the time
- 1:38:48but whoever does, you know, I'll you know, quite happy.
- 1:38:52If I was that inclined. I could pick as many holes in
- 1:38:55his writing as I can with Christians, as I can with It was
- 1:39:0140 DB he's you know Joe I think there's something in there you
- 1:39:04know, of wherever your preference is.
- 1:39:06Yeah the opposing Riot the showrunners.
- 1:39:10We actually look for more floors.
- 1:39:14Yeah. It's a very old Affair.
- 1:39:17You know, honestly and well should we do our free apiece for
- 1:39:22no.3? Go on.
- 1:39:23Then I'm going to choose a scene staff with if I go first
- 1:39:41I'm going to choose the scene where the angels are coming out
- 1:39:43of the site because I think is very well executed and it sort
- 1:39:47of a moment of tension in an episode where I don't feel any
- 1:39:51real tension. Yeah, classic really great
- 1:39:53moment. Who directed this one?
- 1:39:55We've done that. We'll talk about that.
- 1:39:57She's I want, I don't know. I don't know you will find out
- 1:40:04that M gravel saying you're one right?
- 1:40:07Okay. And if you can pick a see then
- 1:40:10I'm going to pick a scene which is going to be the Regeneration
- 1:40:12scene because Mexico getting them back in the Tardis and
- 1:40:17given me that opportunity to have he's probably speech which
- 1:40:22doesn't go on too long and it is absolutely fantastic.
- 1:40:25It's a cracker. I just think it hits the mark so
- 1:40:28well. Emotionally spent.
- 1:40:30Especially after the other tenant who didn't want to go.
- 1:40:33You don't have a have the doctor, a sort of acceptance of,
- 1:40:36you know? Yes, I'm going to change.
- 1:40:39I'm going to be someone new but I've loved my time as the doctor
- 1:40:44and I will never forget that you know really kind of resonates
- 1:40:47and yeah literally just watching it five minutes ago so watch out
- 1:40:51of my eye. Is a fantastic saying is so
- 1:40:54well-acted. It's directly by Jamie pain.
- 1:41:00I'm not sure if he directed any others, but I do think like
- 1:41:03Jesus Christ. Maddie had a hell of a fucking
- 1:41:05Christmas cake to put together ear and even had a fair stab.
- 1:41:10I think the comedies a bit overwrought and that ending on
- 1:41:13the tower is somewhere in the stratosphere, but there's some
- 1:41:18good imagery in it, you know, it spicy.
- 1:41:20It's visually interesting to look at.
- 1:41:24So my second thing is going to be the character of grand.
- 1:41:28Unfortunately. She never gets an item.
- 1:41:31She's just Grand. I love, she can read.
- 1:41:35And I feel like in an episode where the emotion doesn't hit
- 1:41:39for me, that even where she talks about her husband, but I
- 1:41:45think Spar style. All right?
- 1:41:47Yeah, yeah. It's a genuine that it's like a
- 1:41:51miniature Ossie Davis episode for a second.
- 1:41:55It hits me in that scene. There's only two named courage.
- 1:41:59Has Clara and Linda. Oh wow.
- 1:42:06Back in aerosol territory, it's Grand and Dad.
- 1:42:13What's your next one? Well, okay, if we're talking
- 1:42:15about the motion, then I'm going to Google for the moment where
- 1:42:20Clara speaks to the crack in the wall.
- 1:42:23And convinces them that the doctor is needs to be saved or
- 1:42:29the pixie dust comes from there. So I think I've got really good
- 1:42:32movement of X here that You know, cops off that about whole
- 1:42:41thread that were powered through all of seven of Doctor Who, you
- 1:42:44know. It's who is the doctor?
- 1:42:46You didn't? You had to do it again?
- 1:42:48I did. Yeah.
- 1:42:49Who is the doctor? You know?
- 1:42:50And that's that's been a theme throughout season. 17 who is The
- 1:42:54Doctor? Who is this person?
- 1:42:55Not so much. He's named Percy, but who is the
- 1:42:58doctor in? It's just sums it up nicely.
- 1:43:01You know, you don't need to know his name, you don't need to
- 1:43:03know. All you need to know is is what
- 1:43:05it does. Was is what the Clippers defines
- 1:43:07who he is. It's kind of like a pre-emptive,
- 1:43:10the doctor falls. You know, where I stand as,
- 1:43:12where I fall, you know what I do?
- 1:43:14This is me and that again, really kind of Hitler's this
- 1:43:18time around I must hold and the music in that scene as well,
- 1:43:23that sort of ethereal version of Clara steam.
- 1:43:27Yeah, is a absolutely wonderful. I mean I was going to be obvious
- 1:43:30and she's music because I think it's great but I especially love
- 1:43:35the third of the long song music.
- 1:43:47Now my third thing is gonna be I'm surprised you didn't take
- 1:43:52this actually handles because somehow, in face me, feel that
- 1:43:58handles handles. Yes, in a way that are Frozen as
- 1:44:02in life. Yeah.
- 1:44:05And the sequence where handles dies, he's decapitated
- 1:44:10Survivorman head for god sakes. Yeah, but the way the doctor
- 1:44:14goes handles. May come on.
- 1:44:18It breaks your heart. It's really sad.
- 1:44:22It does it does in its if it is it's finishing off a guard as
- 1:44:28well, isn't it? Because it's like he sets up,
- 1:44:30there's a guard at the Starbucks like your reminders to patch the
- 1:44:34telephone back through the envious.
- 1:44:35When just reminders, when it's like just pick a number express,
- 1:44:40it as a unit of time and when that Flames done reminders to do
- 1:44:43this, you know? And so on that basis, I will
- 1:44:47pick the sort comedy element of this is, well, and make sure
- 1:44:52there was some really good, you know, sharp comedy writing and I
- 1:44:55know you're going to disagree but you know I like I do like
- 1:44:57that scene where that the start where should see me we need to
- 1:45:00pay me boyfriend and he's like, oh, Coupling.
- 1:45:07That's why. Yeah, but it's I think that just
- 1:45:11highlights, you know, the strength of Steven Moffat, as a
- 1:45:13writer that you can, you know, put that dialogue in that just
- 1:45:16seems backwards and forwards. And you know, you can eat is a
- 1:45:20full of so that it doesn't just write gag.
- 1:45:22After the guy, he does, right? Really, and witty and funny
- 1:45:26scenes as well. It's the sort of the comedy
- 1:45:29element, Lance, for me, as well. I got another one.
- 1:45:36Oh yeah, we're gonna keep going. Oh okay.
- 1:45:40Oh good grief. I'm prepared anymore.
- 1:45:43Let me think could very quickly. Oh yes, turning up for her
- 1:45:50single appearance in Doctor. Who?
- 1:45:54Yeah, it's like she read two scenes, Tessa Peak Jones.
- 1:45:56Once again, I do think they wasted but they're utilized well
- 1:46:01for what they have to do. Yeah, and I'll see.
- 1:46:07Jenna Coleman. The bad thing is I think, you
- 1:46:12know, throughout this one it is more focused on on the code, I
- 1:46:16will work than you would get from most of you, Steven Moffat
- 1:46:20stories and a lot of that lifting is done by Clara.
- 1:46:25You know, she is the one that's kind of like you know, mist
- 1:46:28seems precious like talking to the doctor and seeing, you know,
- 1:46:31why don't you just go? You know, you just going to die.
- 1:46:33If you stay here, you notice leave this, you know, let them
- 1:46:37have the planet, let them shut the time.
- 1:46:39Nods up, you know, seems like that.
- 1:46:40You know, you have the scene where she's, you know, she's
- 1:46:44kicked out, the Tardis twice in chance to respond to that and
- 1:46:48the scene with Nan, you know where, you know, nouns tell
- 1:46:51another Tale in which is just floating up and then her
- 1:46:54reaction to the dock regenerating at the end Jenna
- 1:46:58Coleman just does superb work throughout you know like we've
- 1:47:01discussed even when she's not actually given much to do she I
- 1:47:05think I think she had moments for our 7B And then, I think she
- 1:47:09got it in Day of the Doctor, like, whatever it is.
- 1:47:13The companion, distilled it? Yes, you got it.
- 1:47:18And now, from this point on, she can pretty much play any
- 1:47:21episode, you know, and deliver. Yeah.
- 1:47:24But I do think she flounders abeyance ever be in stores,
- 1:47:27like, cold war, and hide, and episodes like that.
- 1:47:32I mean, that's you can justify that.
- 1:47:35You can see, you know, she is underwritten and she is tough.
- 1:47:37Cheers. Yeah, I'm sure you'll find a
- 1:47:39finches. I'm going to find the character
- 1:47:41within very sort of sparse characterization so I think
- 1:47:45that's that's kind of forgivable to it's what I'm going to say
- 1:47:50next and maybe this will bring this to a conclusion or not, I
- 1:47:58don't know but basically I said this for The Dominoes but I'm
- 1:48:02going to say again and it isn't just pampering your ego.
- 1:48:05My last thing is you but it's not.
- 1:48:08Not it's not I don't like this, I don't like this episode.
- 1:48:14It's not what I want from Doctor Who and I do think he's
- 1:48:19self-indulgent. I do think is overwritten.
- 1:48:22I don't think is very funny. I don't think it's it hits.
- 1:48:25The Beats is going for but I've had the opportunity to watch
- 1:48:31this through your eyes today and I can see a completely different
- 1:48:37perspective. Neither Changed my perspective,
- 1:48:40but I see another perspective and that's quite refreshing.
- 1:48:44And I think more Doctor Who fans should stop Clinging On to their
- 1:48:48own opinions and do a bit more of that.
- 1:48:51Yeah, absolutely. I think I can see your point.
- 1:48:55I can see why you don't like this.
- 1:48:58I can see why I do like it and where there's like it.
- 1:49:00My those don't like it and I think that's exactly.
- 1:49:02It's perspective. It's just, you know, what works
- 1:49:05for you. Doesn't necessarily work for me
- 1:49:07in But ultimately, you know, we are in a position where, you
- 1:49:12know, we're blessed with a Shore which is now 60 years old, where
- 1:49:16we have got so much now, absolute quality, where's even
- 1:49:21if you don't like it you know you can hopefully appreciate
- 1:49:26what it's doing or what's not doing and and have plenty where
- 1:49:30you can see while they had. This is for me and that b, not
- 1:49:34for me. So I looked well, I'm not I'll
- 1:49:36dwell on the bit. I'll live in the Corners that
- 1:49:38are do you like they're not the ones that are doing and there's
- 1:49:41joy of making friends who are like Doctor Who fans and like
- 1:49:47certainly like with you me and I'm sorry II, where we've gotten
- 1:49:50very, very close over the last couple of years is that if you
- 1:49:54do have an opposing opinion and then you hear that, other
- 1:49:58person's opinion, when you understand that person what they
- 1:50:02think about the show as a whole sort, their background and all
- 1:50:05of this. It absolutely, it just it means
- 1:50:08It is a completely fresh. Look at the story.
- 1:50:12Yeah, people. Absolutely do more of this,
- 1:50:15right? And stopped saying I'm right,
- 1:50:18and you're wrong, that would be lovely pot, stop, but I think
- 1:50:21we're up to 9 now. So I'm going to give two more
- 1:50:23which is going to take us up to 11.
- 1:50:25Go One Nail. I've got a lunch date 01, get
- 1:50:28it. I'll be quick then and next one,
- 1:50:31Peter Capaldi. Coming in.
- 1:50:35Oh, God damn it. I should've chosen instead of
- 1:50:39Peter Capaldi. I'll never do that mistake
- 1:50:41again. Yeah.
- 1:50:45So, Peter Capaldi, you know, doing what the best, you know,
- 1:50:48people do is just, you know, how getting a little snippet to kind
- 1:50:52of tease us with what his doctors going to be like and
- 1:50:54just, you know, sprinkling that little bit of the magic all
- 1:50:57around that last sort of 30 seconds.
- 1:51:00So that's going to be number 10. And number 11, Of course, not be
- 1:51:04me. We can do another one if you
- 1:51:06want. Yeah, I'm gonna do it, Craven
- 1:51:09unbalanced positive things at the end.
- 1:51:13The people that care about that, sort of thing will never forgive
- 1:51:15me. So I'm going to choose who I'm
- 1:51:20going to choose all the fabulous Aesthetics in the town of
- 1:51:24Christmas, because I think it's also a few sort of sunlight and
- 1:51:30snow and old-fashioned buildings.
- 1:51:33And it just like you said, If it does Christmas better than
- 1:51:37anyone else. And it's rather.
- 1:51:40Ironically, the town of Christmas is the most Christmas
- 1:51:43Eve Christmas ever that. Yes, it is.
- 1:51:45It's all victoriano, and Christmas cards, and perhaps not
- 1:51:49quite as strong as the aesthetic in the Christmas.
- 1:51:51Carol own. Yes, but they're not life.
- 1:51:53And I'll ever be topped, I'll pick woes wait.
- 1:51:57So you've technically done number 11, then and so I'm going
- 1:52:02to have to cut one of yours as the war Choice, okay?
- 1:52:08My one, I'm going to go out on will draw line or the ex you
- 1:52:11need to get away. Is Matt Smith.
- 1:52:14Okay, come on Smith. And, you know, this is the end
- 1:52:18of his rule one, you know, this is him.
- 1:52:20He's lost his last outing as the doctor so far.
- 1:52:23Hopefully, we'll get more, but this is his last run out and he
- 1:52:27does go out on a high, you know, maybe he's not particularly for,
- 1:52:30in terms of, you know, story-wise or totalizer
- 1:52:34whatever. But in terms of performance
- 1:52:36years is good, he's ever been, you know, he's hitting every
- 1:52:39note that you want them to hit. He's funny when you want them to
- 1:52:42be full. Only, he's sarcastic.
- 1:52:43A stickies. He's angry does these again,
- 1:52:47he's kind of sort of mango and he's not sort of longer and you
- 1:52:52know, he's Flappy wrists. But he's still and he's just
- 1:52:56everything is the full package, he's always been the full
- 1:52:58package as the doctor. He's been, you know, such a
- 1:53:01magical presence, you know, throughout his his three series
- 1:53:06like I say even when the story hasn't necessarily been the
- 1:53:09best, the always hot in there to enjoy a performance for money.
- 1:53:13Stone here, you can weave is the short right to the end with that
- 1:53:19regeneration scene, which again is just absolutely Sublime even
- 1:53:24within why don't like they don't either.
- 1:53:29But there's still though, they're still moments, even for
- 1:53:31me that the bit with handles the surprised when the pixie dust
- 1:53:36hits his face, you know, the Regeneration scene where he
- 1:53:40delivered that speech. So beautifully.
- 1:53:42Yeah. In fact it's rather lovely, you
- 1:53:44know? Because you gave her fabulous
- 1:53:46summation of Matt Smith at the end of the eleventh hour
- 1:53:50commentary that we did well. And now we've come full circle.
- 1:53:55We have a diver we possibly could say any more about time.
- 1:53:58And Doctor, you know, we probably could probably could,
- 1:54:01but they, because we've got things to do, places to see
- 1:54:04people always do that on this commentary podcast.
- 1:54:08Obviously eventually one day, we will do the seeds of death with
- 1:54:13My heart, which we have now promise for the last 400 years,
- 1:54:16I think by the time we actually get to do commentary on the
- 1:54:19moon, we will actually be able to go to the moon and do the
- 1:54:22commentary there to the company. But you and I I have decided
- 1:54:28sorry, because I really enjoyed doing it.
- 1:54:32Oh yeah, I wasn't sure this was going to go down, you know, but
- 1:54:34I said, I really enjoy doing this.
- 1:54:37You and I are going to tackle a second attempt with no
- 1:54:42disrespect as At all to the fabulous job in Somalia.
- 1:54:45Who did the first attempt? We're gonna do the doctor, the
- 1:54:49Widow, and the Wardrobe real number T, and John are have to
- 1:54:53do this because he pulled it out as a birthday present.
- 1:54:59I've got an IOU in my pocket, don't be inserted on for over a
- 1:55:02year. I know.
- 1:55:07But as ever leaves me to say, you're marvelous at, this is
- 1:55:12wonderful to be with you. Thank you very much for your
- 1:55:14time. Well, no, thank you for once
- 1:55:17again, inviting us on. It's always a pleasure to come
- 1:55:19on. Even when we don't agree on what
- 1:55:21we're talking about, something that's even more fun when we're
- 1:55:23doing the so I think we've got the art of disagree industry
- 1:55:26knows we were absolutely your honor we can disagree very
- 1:55:30agreeably these days, you know, to begin with.
- 1:55:32I do whether it's the fact that you You just got the sexiest
- 1:55:35voice in all of podcaster, or whether you just make extremely
- 1:55:39engaging remarks. But people just love your
- 1:55:42episodes was like, hope you've enjoyed this one because I will
- 1:55:46say this for go, you know, I will not forget this, not forget
- 1:55:50one line of this, always remember when the podcast was
- 1:55:55me. Boom, I'll gather there.
